Your questions, answered As an editor, a large part of my day is spent sifting through a massive, endless stream of emails. Nestled between press releases for events and other stuff that doesn’t really fit our core reader demo or random things we’d never consider covering are letters from you, our readers.

Some ask great questions, others offer suggestions and a few throw a little shade.

This week, I pulled some letters that encompass all of the above.

Instead of answering via return emails, I figured it made sense to use this space to answer some of the better ones for all to see.

Why isn’t there more news about what the Black community in Philadelphia is doing in this town? I read your paper and most weeks there’s a white man on the cover. You guys have a great calendar and I like the new puzzle, but can we get some Black news up in there? I mean, your editor is Black, he should know better.

“Stephen’s Icarus-like tale of flying too close to the sun with this film and ending up an addict largely reminded me of how I lived my life,” said Ronca when asked if McCoy’s downward spiral resembled his own. “I had a self-sabotaging nature.”

Quoting Beat godfather William S. Burroughs, Ronca said, “‘Every human is a parasitic being that doesn’t act to his own advantage.’ That is where Stephen and I really shared a lot of traits. A few wrong turns and you find yourself trapped.”

Ronca’s wrong turns began when the King of Prussia/Collegeville-raised youth got thrown out of his parents’ house before attending the Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College of Culinary Arts between 2007 and 2008. He was a rowdy kid, and his parents weren’t having it. He went to the Restaurant School, not because he wanted to be a chef, but rather to get away from home and find something close in spirit to his dreams of film school.

“I saw an art in food close to the filmmaking thing I longed for. But, understandably, my parents didn’t see that I had really applied myself in high school, so they weren’t about to send me across the country to film school,” he said.

He discovered his favorite filmmakers — Kubrick, Coppola and Scorsese — among his parents’ VHS tapes before their divorce. They allowed him to see those cinematic recipes put to the test. With any great film, there must be antagonists, a protagonist and dramatic arcs.

When his parents threw him out of the house for being shiftless, and eventually his attendance at college on 42nd and Walnut dwindled, Ronca’s life spun out of control. He wound up living in his car in the Restaurant School’s parking lot and on the streets of West Philly.

“I slipped through the cracks at school. I had forever been a lousy student, and though there was passion for food, I was defiant,” he said.

Ronca drifted. His drug of choice was OxyContin and Percocet 30s. “I never really told my friends this, as there’s a genuine level of shame here,” he said, trailing off. “Percs were normalized. Everyone’s mom had them in their medicine cabinets.”

He did things he isn’t proud of to keep him alive, and keep him addicted. Though he won’t admit to specifics, Ronca mentioned that many of his survival skills allowed him to break more than a few laws. “I got arrested several times,” he said. “I just dropped out. Of everything.”

And yet, like McCoy’s homeless family life, there were glimmers of hope. “No one from my old suburbs took me in. That parking lot on 42nd & Walnut became as much of a home as I could have,” he said.

Ronca noted how locals looked out for him

and made him feel part of the family, similar to how McCoy’s fellow street urchins did for him on the streets of Boston. Ronca sold small bags of weed for quick cash and kept his hand in writing when he could. His love of film never waned, even if his love of self was non-existent. “I kept falling back into bad habits...It felt like an abyss,” he admitted.

Eventually, the circle of endless addiction and criminality got to Ronca, and he finally asked for real help. “I had wasted most of my life. I couldn’t live with that,” he said.

He got his act together enough to beg his parents’ forgiveness, sober up, move in with his mom and get his degree from Montgomery County Community College. He even found the LA film school “leg up” he had always wanted. “My parents saw that I had turned my life around,” he said. “They said if I could find an affordable film school, they’d help me.”

Ronca found it in Pasadena’s ArtCenter College of Design, a college with illustrious alumni such as Lincoln Park’s Mike Shinoda, macho filmmaker Michael Bay and DC Comics superhero director-producer-writer Zach Snyder. While in attendance from 2015-2017, Ronca won the approval of Snyder without ever meeting the auteur until his graduation day.

It turns out Ronca had been one of four promising students to get alumni scholarship dollars courtesy of Snyder. “Zach’s cash saved my life,” he said.

What does someone with an addictive personality do with big cash? Follow their worst impulses, take half of the money to the South-

ern Californian Commerce Casino and enter into a poker game two hours after the check arrived, perhaps. “Self-destructive, right? I started out strong… until I was down to my last chips, $50,” he said.

Ronca, a guy with an affinity for gambling (his first short was titled “The Dealer’s Hand”) did what any good and bad gambler would do — double down.

“I caught a full house, but my Jack-JackAce-Ace-Ace couldn’t beat the man across from me’s AAJJJ,” he said. “Hopeless, I started to leave when everyone started yelling. A guy came out and handed me a check, saying I’d received the Bad Beat Jackpot. I left the casino with $12,000, enough to fly myself and a cameraman back to Philadelphia to capitalize on what had become a new obsession and national necessity— 2016’s Democratic National Convention.”

Important next steps Ronca and friends from ArtCenter College had formed a collective, Write Brain, and were pursuing a twisted vision of the American Dream with Ronca’s directorial debut, “The Revolution Televised.”

Complete with free narration from Viggo Mortensen, “The Revolution Televised” featured pro-Black Lives Matter narratives and anti-Trump everything. It brought them notoriety and a few ducats. Inspired not by what people could do with $20 million but with little cash (“Roger Corman and John Waters are my heroes in that respect,” Ronca said), Write Brain wanted to make its next film more universal and human.

That’s when they pulled out a sample of loose footage they’d been sent — 80 hours of Hi8 camcorder-shot film — called “Nightcrawlers.” They then hunted down McCoy, the supposedly homeless guy who made it.

Ronca found him in a Boston homeless shelter doing his best to edit on “his beat-up, old ass laptop,” Ronca said. “I don’t know why — call it instinct — we got money together and flew McCoy out to live with me while Luc and he edited ‘Nightcrawlers.’”

We didn’t even know that footage was in there. I know that was deeply troubling. There is another scene where Stephen cuts his finger with a razor blade for the camera. I couldn’t look at it without getting nauseous, so I left the full clip in without cutting, so I would have to look at it less. But that lack of editing ends up functioning positively. Film has a natural affinity for the real in that way, so the nausea helped in the editing.”

Ronca is still amazed that he took in a total stranger with what McCoy stated was mental problems. “Some of the collective were skittish about him,” he said. “He had a homeless guy’s instincts, which I recognized immediately. He and I had similarities, both being from the East Coast, both going through the homeless thing. He’s still going through it.”

When asked about the amount of blood, sweat and tears that went into “Nightcrawlers,” Benson noted that it was McCoy that did most of the bleeding. “After staying with Kevin for a few months, he went back to Boston for a court date — I believe it was for kicking a cop while drunk — and one day in the middle of class, I get a call from Kevin saying that Stephen was in the hospital. He got stabbed in the chin. Next time we saw him, he had stitches. So Stephen was the one drawing blood. The whole film runs on Stephen’s blood, and his impulse to document it.”

Benson doesn’t harbor the demons that Ronca and McCoy do, but he was drawn to McCoy through the very people that this firsttime director documented. ”It’s less me being drawn to a unified community than it is me being drawn to the splinters,” Benson said.

“Stephen is a splinter.”

Ronca is also a splinter. He knows what it is to be a guy with his whole life in a bag. “When I picked him up, it was his tapes and these shirts,” Ronca said. “I knew what and who he was, how volatile he could be. To be honest, I slept with a knife under my pillow when I first brought him into the house. He would wake up screaming, as he thought he was still living in the homeless shelter… real post-traumatic stress disorder stuff. But if my folks and Zach Snyder hadn’t have given me a second chance, I wouldn’t be here, so….”

Often spoken of in the third person, McCoy, for his part, lives life very much in the first person, despite any problems or discussions of his demons.

“I was 18 when I conceptualized this idea of making a film about the city at night, not an original idea by any means, but it was something I could build off of, play with,” McCoy said. “I could wander. I would carry two handheld cameras and I would just walk and record. I never approached it with a sociopolitical attitude. I didn’t go out looking for the people I encountered. They were just there. I

was neither a man nor an artist at this point. I was just a kid with a video camera.”

Asked about meeting the people he became close to from the “Nightcrawlers” community, and how he became one with their addictions, McCoy is frank. “In the beginning, I made a conscious choice that I would only film and interview the people i met for that brief encounter and moment and nothing more, but the more you travel by foot, the more you become enveloped in your surroundings,” he said. “I guess it’s a question of how deep will you go, how willing are you to become totally immersed? I mean, you travel around certain circles enough, you’re bound to make some relationships. Some people improve, and others, unfortunately, aren’t so blessed.”

Of his own circumstances, he is quick to say that addiction and finding himself among the homeless didn’t happen overnight. “I kept gradually falling deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole,” he said. “After a certain point, things like my health, family, friends, didn’t quite matter anymore. Death no longer seemed something worth fearing. In fact, it was almost embraced as a way out. I started out wanting to create cinema that celebrates the beauty of living, not the other way around.”

Hooking up with Ronca, someone who understood the pitfalls of addiction and homelessness, was a blessing and a necessity. “[The manner in which he’s willing to put his demons out there] is just an example of how we function as collaborators and friends,” McCoy said. “We are both the kind of individuals that believe that somethings are simply not worth doing unless there’s a certain sacrifice involved. If you’re not giving up a piece of yourself in the process, you have no room to grow.

Luckily, I have people in my life today that are showing me how to dream again. I don’t think i can do anything but make film, but what that film will look like, only time will tell.”

Talking about the empathy it took to undergo its production, Ronca is pragmatic.

“Moving to LA, I was surrounded by people that didn’t understand my struggle… the plague of addiction that was killing people where I grew up, and leaving so many dying in the streets in Kensington,” he said. “I was looked at with shock and surprise. When I met Stephen... He didn’t give me that look of surprise. There was a normality of homelessness and this epidemic... Not normality. but empathy and understanding. He had seen that struggle. He had lived that life. We had both been to rock bottom and seen the pits. I had a heart attack at 25. Stephen OD-ed.

I was nomadic, with nowhere to go. So was Stephen. I had a felony, so did Stephen, facing serious jail time, too. I hadn’t felt that kind of connection of someone understanding my struggle the 3 years I had been living in LA... until I met Stephen. That loneliness I felt before drifted away... and McCoy became a brother to me forever.”

Crown of thorns Billie Eilish’s regal reign of dark pop on full display at The Met Philadelphia

T

here’s an old saying that goes, “if so-and-so wasn’t around, you’d have to invent them.”

That’s the case with the wriggly, dark pophop, chart-topping prodigy, Billie Eilish — at least from having watched the 17-year-old on Saturday night at a packed-to-therooftop Met Philadelphia.

Into the chipper and agreeable void that is the pop charts — where the unpleasantly desperate Taylor Swift and the semi-soulful but cloying Ariana Grande exist — came Eilish, a breath of smoky air during a smoggy California dusk; a spidery, strange young woman with bits of Trent Reznor, Lana Del Rey, vintage trip-hop and Fiona Apple in her mix.

Veering toward the dark side since her start (2016’s viral hit “Ocean Eyes”), Eilish showed her Hammer-Horror hand early in her career when she compared her lover’s eyes to burning cities and napalm skies on “Ocean Eyes” and talked about killing her teen pals in the strummed acoustic “Bellyache.”

When she coo-sang the line, “I’m scared/I’ve never fallen from quite this high,” from that former tune, you could tell that Eilish was loving her alien side, a tomboy choirgirl who had watched her native Los Angeles in flames and witnessed school shootings on the news. Through it all, she was still feeling the pangs of teen love-and-lust, churning all of this together in her head until the results poured out in a macabre, molten lava blob.

That Eilish returned to cocksure certainty for the last fifth of her show highlighted her pop sensibilities despite any nod to underground sound or lit-smart hissy fit. The woman knows how to pace a set like a pro.

Along with the aforementioned spooky sorts of “ocean eyes” and “bury a friend,” she performed “when the party’s over” before the song’s bright, white video — one where a blue-haired Eilish cried rivers of globbing thick blood while smearing it across her face and reveling in a loneliness (“Quiet when I’m coming home and I’m on my own/I could lie, say I like it like that, like it like that”) that’s bitterly sad for anyone even thrice her age. She made each and every audience member — young and old, child and parent — feel the desperation of utter solitude like a gut punch, but with the throbbing mournful monologue of “goodbye” to wrap all that mad, bad, glad-to-be-unhappy feeling up in a big black bow.

Having a 17-year-old put an emotional lifetime, yours and hers, into a worldly perspective honestly proved to be both confounding and refreshing.

They don’t want to take the chance of losing [them], so they go swimming and leave them behind…and sometimes, by the time they get to the rec center, we have to make sure we have Band-Aids and some of the equipment ready because they may have stepped on glass or ‘I think I stepped on a needle’ or they need a break and go sit in the shade because they’ve burnt their feet on the walk.”

Desamour’s testimonials and others like his helped precipitate the first-ever citywide swimwear drive, which is now underway. The Parks & Recreation Department celebrated the opening of its first pool Monday. The campaign, dubbed “Suit Up for Summer,” is driven by the mission of making sure no child is turned away at the gate because they are improperly prepared for the pool.

The city regulates a dress code when entering pools. Cotton T-shirts, for example, are a no-no, because the fabric can clog the filtration system. Jeans are unacceptable in the water. Bathing suits must have the proper lining, and so on.

“The lifeguards, in doing their duty, are turning these kids away, but we don’t want to see that as a barrier for young people who may not have the means to purchase the appropriate swimwear to be rejected at the door and not being able to use the pool — which

is what it was intended for — to cool down during the summer,” said Orlando Rendon, Deputy Commissioner for Philadelphia Parks & Recreation.

Philadelphia is accepting youth and adult bathing suits of all sizes, swim diapers, flip flops, beach towels, goggles and shorts of all sizes. Donations must be new and unused, with the tags still on.

Rendon said the city hires roughly 800 seasonal employees who deal with pools, including 400 lifeguards, and there is always a need for more workers.

Monday marked the start of summer swim season with the opening of the first public pool at Bridesburg, which recently underwent a renovation. City pools will now open on a staggered schedule. Monetary donations to the swimwear drive can be made here.

By helping out in this way, Desamour said, young people can enjoy themselves naturally.

“Our kids can be anywhere, getting into anything, and people don’t understand or underestimate the swimming pool and how it keeps our youth busy and also keeps them being kids instead of worrying about the issues in that community — the trauma, the dangers, the drugs, the violence that plagues certain areas,” he said. “They can laugh, play, splash, jump in the pool and have a good time and forget about what they may be dealing with at home. Being able to walk there and feel comfortable would be great.”

But there is resonance to… there are some Douglas situations in the female reproductive environment [The Pouch of Douglas.] There’s a Scottish doctor in the 18th century who decided to put his name on a few bits and bumps and so I explore that a little.

You mentioned your dog. Is the same dog from the end of “Nanette?”

I’ve got two dogs. I say I’m guilty about naming the show after one, and the other disappearing into obscurity. But I don’t think they care.

You talked in “Nanette” about quitting comedy. And obviously, you’re still at it.

Is that something you were seriously considering or was it more of a device?

It was a device. It was meant to sort of challenge people in their expectations of what comedy is, you know, I knew that the show I had written was going to make people uncomfortable, and when people are uncomfortable, there are different ways they respond, and one of the ways I knew people would respond is to reject their discomfort, by qualifying my claim as comedy.

So I thought, I’ll just dethrone myself before I get going so that particular attack on my work becomes redundant. Of course, people who wanted to attack my work didn’t understand that their attack was redundant, so they attacked me anyway. But also, during the course of performing “Nanette” which was, I will not lie, an incredibly difficult and painful process, when I said I was gonna quit comedy, I really almost thought it was a good idea a lot.

So I think that’s why when I said it, it sounded like I very much meant it.

I’m sure you followed a lot of the reaction when “Nanette” came out. First of all, do you feel like people had a good sense of what you were going for, and that the things you were trying to get across were understood by most who watched it?

I am incredibly humbled by what people have found in my work. You know, I thought I was speaking to a very small group of people who have lived my experience. What I did not expect was that so many different kinds of people would find access points in different parts of the show. And also, people who did not before understand my experience-I feel like I broke into something that helped them understand my experience. I did a lot of things in that show that deliberately, I knew what I was doing in a lot of ways, but it was grown much bigger than I anticipated, and that is kind of really great.

There was some debate among people who reacted to the show, people who said – and I know you addressed this in the comedy itself-there were those who asked – is this a standup special? Is this a monologue? Is this a TED Talk? What did you make of that response, and is how your work is categorized something that matters to you?

It doesn’t matter to me, but it is interesting to me as an art history student that peo-

ple still feel the need to categorize. I think the debate that people are putting into “Nanette” is something that I’m addressing in my new show. And I am putting it into a historical context that sort of [looks at] the inherent elitism, which is ironic in something like comedy to [say] that what you are doing is a form of elitism, in an art form that is famously self-anointed anti-establishment.

You named the show after Nanette, you tell the story at the beginning, that you named the show after someone you met, and of your plan to build the special around them, but you didn’t and actually kept the name anyway. Has anyone come forward claiming to be the actual Nanette?

No. I would be very surprised if Nanette was in any way aware of what was going in, and was in any way aware that it was about there. She was just this person I met very briefly – and when I say meet-she had a name tag, I didn’t, so she wouldn’t necessarily know that she met me. And it was this small little town in Australia, so I don’t think – I’d be very surprised. And when I think of Nanette now, I don’t think of that person.

There were some who reacted to “Nanette” by comparing it to a TED Talk. And then, earlier this year, you ended up doing an actual TED Talk. How did that come about?

That’s just happened because some other people made some decisions. It certainly didn’t happen because critics of “Nanette” suggested that I should do it.

The state of comedy itself today – do you feel like it’s healthy?

Well, the state of the world isn’t healthy, so I don’t think the state of comedy is healthy. I’d like to see fewer people concerned with defining comedy, and more people concerned with what they’re actually trying to say. It’s become almost Machiavellian, people think the purpose of comedy is to laugh, and the ends justify the means, and I don’t believe that’s a healthy way to approach your freedom of speech. I think freedom of speech comes with a responsibility, and I think it’s high time that comedians acknowledged that.

I’ve kind of been following this debate for many years, and I feel like a lot of the time when comedians think they’re being censored, what they’re really saying is that someone criticized them on Twitter.

No, what they’re actually experiencing is a bad feeling. And a lot of those big guys I don’t think to believe they should have to experience bad feelings. So they can strike out and blame the people they believe are responsible for their own feelings. Feelings happen inside of you, and you have to work a lot hard at being reactive.

Her office manages the KEYSPOT program, which has only grown since the beginning — and necessarily so, she added. “[Digital literacy] is pretty crucial for any job now,” Parkes said.

Philadelphia FIGHT This nonprofit is known for its outreach to people with HIV and those who are high risk for the disease. In addition to community health centers, it has a Critical Path Learning Center that offers adult education classes on topics like digital literacy and employment.

This center houses one of the city’s KEYSPOT labs with Wi-Fi access, desktop computers, laptops, iPads and charging stations, said Juliet Fink Yates, chief education officer at FIGHT. The Institute for Community Justice (ICJ) within FIGHT focuses on formerly incarcerated citizens returning to society with its Reentry Center. The Reentry Center is also a KEYSPOT computer lab, and ICJ has a workforce development program.

FIGHT received a $20,000 grant from the Digital Literacy Alliance (DLA) in 2018 for its work that pairs health management and digital literacy, according to Andrew Buss, the deputy CIO for innovation management for the Office of Innovative Technology.

SEAMAAC and United Communities In 2018, DLA awarded these immigration-focused nonprofits a joint grant of $10,000 for their digital literacy program, including an open computer lab, for immigrants learning to speak English and searching for jobs. This was a follow-up to a $25,000 grant the DLA gave to the two organizations for its digital literacy classes, which reached about 70 community members by the end of 2017.

Lutheran Settlement House (LSH) Every third Wednesday of the month, this nonprofit holds an information session at 1340 Frankford Ave about its free individual or small group tutoring sessions, according to its website. Volunteer tutors will help participants with GED preparation, digital literacy skills and career development. Its six-week Customer Service Training Program will also train people interested in working in retail.

DLA also awarded this org for its digital literacy and job education work in 2018 with a $10,000 grant. LSH started teaching people transitioning out of homelessness these skills at the Jane Addams Place shelter on 43rd and Ludlow streets in 2017.

Pan-African Studies Community Education Program (PASCEP) This 40-year-old program at Temple University offers low-cost courses that are catered to the North Philadelphia community, but available to anyone in the city. It has three technology-centered, 10-week courses in the fall and spring semesters, none of which costs more than $40. They are:
