Readers that now look for their news on the site will automatically be redirected to Inquirer.com, which looks exactly like Philly.com except for the unmistakable boring ass Olde English font of the Philadelphia Inquirer at the top of the page. In Philly. com, it was assumed that the site was a hub for both publications but now, there’s not even a mention of the DN – arguably, the more authentic voice of Philadelphia – unless you scroll all the way to the bottom of the home page.

Thanks a lot, gentrification They say we can’t have nice things but thanks to gentrification, it appears we can’t even hang onto the wonderfully hideous. Graffiti Pier, a longtime fantasy world for street artists of all types has been closed due to an uptick in crime. However, this week the news came out that the Port Fishington spot is set to reopen as a public park. The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, which has tried to create a path down mighty Delaware for the latter part of five years, has partnered with Conrail, who owns the land to open it officially in the near future. Spot for counterculture today, cheesy Instagram background tomorrow.

In the end, the amount a group walked away with after it’s alleged they killed four men execution-style inside a West Philly rowhome recently. According to a man charged in the crime, all of this was over three bundles of heroin that was sold wholesale for $105 with the hopes could be sold to another dealer for $120. You guessed it, a total profit of $15 fucking dollars.

Also, according to reports, the man told police that he tried some of the heroin, discovering that it was a “bad batch.” This would be hysterical if it wasn’t for the deceased.

Now, it’s just really, really sad.

ather than think of summer as a sleepy season for comedy or theater, consider it a more selective, or even curated, take on what audiences will tolerate through the heat. We took a look at a growing slate of scheduled events across both facets and are excited by this lineup coming to Philadelphia now through August.

Now in its 10th season, and initially formed by a klatch of FringeFest associates and renegade devised theater and experimental performance arts peeps, the idea of the way-underground SoLow Fest is intimacy and portability. It would have to be as its DIY showcases can be found playing out in bars, cars, basements, kitchens, old phone booths and such, with casts usually whittled down to

ones or twos, from West Philadelphia to Kensington and into deep South Philly. The entire 12-day SoLow run is surprisingly manageable for a large, multi-show, fast-paced local theater fest. Betty’s Summer Vacation by Christopher Durang with The Idiopathic Ridiculopathy Consortium Tart British playwright Durang’s acidic 1999 comedy comes with a warning: “This production is for a mature audience only due to language, violence, dismemberment, and sexual content.” That’s probably due to its search for a severed penis and its outlook on sexual (not so smooth) criminal mastermind Michael Jackson. Apple don’t fall far Danny Simmons on debut album, art, and support for music mogul brother post #metoo allegations

t hardly seems possible that this week’s release of The Brown Beatnik Tomes – Live at the BRIC House is Danny Simmons’ first album.

How did the multi-talented, Tony Award-winning co-founder of Def Poetry Jam — a novelist, poet, gallerist and neo-African abstract expressionist painter — miss out on that credit?

Along with forging ahead on this project with legendary bassist Ron Carter by his side, Simmons is carrying on with a new mission and its flourishing programs at his Rush Arts Philadelphia gallery and community art house at 4954 Old York Road in Logan. It was a bumpy road for a minute, considering the accusations of sexual harassment leveled at his older brother, Russell, but during this recent conversation with PW, it appears the younger Simmons SEE MUSIC, PAGE 16

MUSIC, FROM PAGE 15 You’ve lived in Philadelphia now for four years, with your gallery in Logan open for three. How is the Philly gallery scene treating you?

The gallery is working out great. We’re putting together a strong, Philly-centric based board of directors with Tanisha Laird at the helm. She’s also the CEO of Symphony Hall in Newark, [N.J.] so she’s really connected to the arts. [Also], I have Noah Smalls, who has his own gallery in Upper Darby, managing the day-to-day things. We have a children’s program run by Raphael Tiberino packed with neighborhood kids.

Upper Darby has several galleries, and now you’re out in Logan. Is that the future of the Philadelphia gallery scene — NOT in Philly proper, but rather its outlying areas?

I don’t know about Philly, but my philosophy has always been that galleries need to be in neighborhoods, not as centrally located as they have been historically. The way to get people to enjoy art [in] the way that art can make social change is to have galleries where people are. When I opened my gallery in Brooklyn, it was all part of a strategy to bring art to people. Galleries such as that can be more comfortable and community-centered.

They’re not as imposing as a [Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts]. If they see a gallery down their block and art through the window, they step in.

Is grant money and philanthropic money still flowing into Rush Arts?

We got a grant from AMP Philly to do community engagement stuff in Logan, but other than that, we have been funded by private donations. Now that I have a director in place, I can go after additional monies. I can’t comment on how it all is, but I can tell you this: Rush Arts Philadelphia is the only cultural outlet in my neighborhood, so there’s not a lot of art grants or philanthropy going into Logan.

I ask because the accusations against your brother had to have affected you in some way; his life, or so-called life, had seeped into yours. How have Russell’s problems affected you?

We lost a lot of supporters at first because of the accusations. Some of them came back and supported our fundraiser last year for the gallery. Some of them didn’t. As far as Russell goes, he’s opening new businesses, living in Bali and doing his yoga practice. It seems as if most of those troubles are behind him. He’s coming back, and he’s very happy. He’s not happy about the accusations, but his life is on

track. It just took a different trajectory. And he’s my brother, so... it may have slowed us down, but it made us recalibrate our mission.

Can you get into that ‘recalibration’ a bit?

Our old mission was to expose new artists.

The new mission is using the arts to spur community development and engagement.

It’s two different trajectories with a new end.

There are enough places searching out new, young artists, [so] that doesn’t need to be my primary mission — not as much as going on with arts making a change in communities. I asked myself, ‘What does Philly need?’

Ron Carter’s tough. What was he like to work with?

We’re the odd couple, me with my patched up jeans and embroidered shirts, and him with his suits and ties. Ron is a consummate professional, and not the type to do anything without meticulous rehearsals. The friendliest, nicest dude, but a perfectionist. That PowerHouse thing came out so perfect, we were both stunned.

Color-rich Museums are nice, but it’s summer

O

ne of the best things about the spring and summer months making our area parks come alive again with all the colors from flora is the multitude of weekend art festivals, shows and other arts-related events that weave their way onto the canvas.

Over the next three months, there are a host of events throughout the city catered specifically to showcasing art. From the works of local artists to pieces of fine art to even branching off the canvas with events catered to spoken word and poetry, it’s all out there – all summer long.

We provided this quick rundown of which merely scratches the surface of where to go if art is your thing, if you’re casually browsing or just looking for something to do outside a little different.

Rittenhouse Square Fine Arts Show Get inspired while you casually stroll through the park. Over 140 artists will have their works displayed in pop-up exhibitions all around Rittenhouse. At the time, there wasn’t a unified front to the movement, nor even consensus on the action at Stonewall. The Mattachine Society, then the largest gay organization, opposed the riot. They posted this at the Stonewall bar in the midst of the chaotic week.

From the perspective of the Mattachine Society, the solution to homophobic oppression was to integrate gays into mainstream culture, taking a cue from the civil rights movements of racial and ethnic minorities who had found some success by blending into white society. They openly opposed subversive actions and espoused loyalty to the United States and its laws.

While the Mattachine Society itself fizzled out, some of their ideas about achieving cultural tolerance have remained. Much of the progress for LGBT rights has been made in integrating gays, lesbians and transgender people into some of the more traditional cultural institutions like marriage rights and military service.

The idea that gays and lesbians are just like heterosexuals can be seen in mantras like “love is love,” often found on rainbow-covered merchandise handed out at Pride events today.

Pride has become, to many LGBT rights activists, more of a corporate block party than a celebration of rebellion or liberation. In response to what is perceived as “the overcommercialization of gay events,” the Gay Shame movement was created. The movement, which

prizes spectacle and militancy, desired to get away from making conservatives more comfortable and assimilating into existing society.

“We are committed to a queer extravaganza that brings direct action to astounding levels of theatricality,” noted Gay Shame on its now-defunct website. “We will not be satisfied with a commercialized gay identity that denies the intrinsic links between queer struggle and challenging power.”

In 2019, the LGBT community is in a potentially precarious spot. While cultural attitudes towards same-sex relationships and diverse gender identity have dramatically shifted, many rights remain in contention for LGBT people, and there has been much backsliding under the Trump administration.

Marriage equality may be the law of the land, but discrimination in housing, employment and access to healthcare continue to be an issue, especially for transgender Americans.

What is the purpose of Pride events in this political climate?

For many attendees, it’s about affirming their identities publicly. For corporations and local businesses, the goal is simply marketing.

For activists, this anniversary holds the opportunity to celebrate how far the movement has come and hopefully, gather momentum for further change.

For some people, it’s just a big party.

This year, there are a ton of Pride events for all types of celebrants, many specifically for kids. All those who wish to celebrate the LGBT movement are welcome – because ultimately Pride will be what we make of it.

According to the Disability Pride Philadelphia website, the parade “[seeks] to change the way people think about and define disability, to end the stigma of disability, and to promote the belief that disability is a natural and beautiful part of human diversity in which people living with disabilities can take pride.”

The first Disability Pride Day was held in Boston in 1990, in honor of the ADA signing.

The Parade element made its debut at a Disability Pride event held in Chicago in 2004.

Philadelphia was the fourth U.S. city to host a parade in 2012, and one of only 15 cities in the country that hosts the event.

Given the limited accessibility of the city, the logistics of putting on this series of events seems a daunting challenge. Landers acknowledges it can be difficult, especially with little institutional support, saying, “For all events, you must be engaged and have an understanding about the entire community you are planning for.”

To make it happen, Disability Pride has multiple committees, she says, covering everything from fundraising and booking performers to marketing and logistics of accessibility. Someone has to visit each venue

to evaluate things like ADA compliance in entrances, seating, bathrooms, accommodations for interpreters and adjustable sound volumes, among other things. “We also want to make sure everything is free (except Happy Hour) so that everyone can participate regardless of socioeconomic status,” she adds.

While the events have a lot to offer folks with disabilities and those close to them, Landers thinks it’s important for everyone to be aware of the myths surrounding disability and the realities of what it’s like to be disabled.

“People with disabilities are so much more than a medical diagnosis; it’s a culture and a hugely intersectional community,” she says, adding, “If you are not living with a disability in this very moment as you read these words – that could change [in] seconds. Disability Pride Philadelphia and our allies are fighting to make Philadelphia and the world accessible because we are living with disabilities today, and when individuals become a part of our community we want it to be without difficulties. We want access to be normalcy, not accommodation.”

Goldfein added that she and Safehouse Executive Director Jose Benitez, also executive director of Prevention Point Philadelphia, one of the largest syringe exchanges in the country that provides a range of other medical and social services, “want to hear from the neighbors. We want to find the best locations, and we’re optimistic that a court will agree that saving lives is not illegal.”

The Drexel study is the largest survey ever conducted of a neighborhood’s attitudes toward an overdose prevention site. Of the 360 adult residents and 79 business owners and staff interviewed, the majority came out in favor of a supervised injection facility. Ninety percent of residents and 63 percent of business owners and staff surveyed said they were in favor of opening an overdose prevention site in Kensington.

“It is encouraging to us that an overwhelming majority of Kensington residents understand that overdose prevention sites not only save lives, they also help drug users get into treatment and reduce the number of people injecting drugs on the street,” Philadelphia Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley told PW in a statement Tuesday. “When over a thousand people are dying of drug overdoses in Philadelphia each year, we need to provide these services as soon as possible. Just as syringe exchange was once controversial but is now a widely-accepted and proven way to prevent HIV/AIDS, overdose prevention sites will likewise be shown to save lives and help affected neighborhoods.”

Philadelphia has been particularly hard hit by the opioid epidemic. It has the highest mortality rate from unintentional drug overdoses of any major city in the country, with 1,116 people dying of drug overdose deaths in 2018 and more than 1,200 drug overdose deaths the year before – with Kensington at its epicenter.

Mayor Jim Kenney formed The Mayor’s Task Force to Combat the Opioid Epidemic in Philadelphia in 2017 to explore, among other responses to the crisis, the possibility of opening a supervised injection facility in the city. Such sites have been operating in Europe since the mid-1980s and exist in 11 different countries. One has yet to open legally in the United States, though an unsanctioned site has been operating in the country since 2014.

In addition to Philadelphia, other cities are also debating opening overdose prevention sites, including Seattle, San Francisco, New York and Denver.

Studies show that such sites save lives, provide links to treatment and reduce the spread of infectious diseases, such as HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis.

For the Drexel study, surveyors approached residents and business owners along a 1.5mile stretch of Kensington Avenue and at major intersections. “A strength of this study is that we talked to nearly 450 men and women

on the street who are very diverse,” Roth said.

“It’s a large and diverse sample from a very large swath of Kensington Avenue.”

Roth attributes the high degree of support for opening a supervised injection facility in Kensington, where drug users could receive overdose prevention and links to other services, to peoples’ exposure to seeing public injection and finding syringes and other drug paraphernalia in their neighborhood.

“Residents and business owners and staff are very aware of what’s happening in their neighborhood,” Roth said. “They frequently experience quite a bit of drug-related social problems, and they’re ready for that to change. I think this is supported by the low proportion of respondents indicating the city response to the overdose-related opioid crisis is sufficient.” (28 percent) Of those surveyed, more than 90 percent had witnessed public injection or seen discarded syringes in the neighborhood over the last 30 days.

The Drexel study is useful because “it gives us this baseline temperature of Kensington resident and business owner and staff opinion on the acceptability of an overdose prevention site in their neighborhood,” Roth said.

“Should a site open, it will be important to track how opinion changes over time post-implementation.”

“I think that Philadelphians need to look at what this really means,” Goldfein said. “All along, we’ve insisted that this is Philadelphians helping Philadelphians. Now we have Philadelphians asking for help.”

The unit will bring paramedics and social services case managers to travel together to provide care and support to overdose survivors with the aim of getting them into treatment. This is a collaboration between the Philadelphia Fire Department, the Philadelphia Health Department and the city’s Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services.

This effort stems from Kenney’s 2018 executive order to combat the opioid crisis and the resulting Philadelphia Resilience Project to clear drug encampments, reduce the number of unsheltered individuals, clean up trash, increase treatment options and reduce the spread of infectious diseases.
