While some believed that the black man is destined to slavery, the black man learned to laugh at trouble. He learned to sing in the midst of his weariness. With his song(s) he taught the white man to sing as well. He learned to fight the Devil, Shout about Gabriel’s Horn, and became the instrument that would bring God’s children to green pastures.

So the real reason the “darkies” were born was to stand tall against oppression and to be the voice of God to the world announcing the second coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ – the one who uniquely has the power and authority to grant life after death in a paradise so grand that our trials and discouragements of this life pale in comparison.

Protesting the protestor

Brian Sims, a PA state representative, posted a video of him confronting a pro-life protestor outside a Philly Planned Parenthood on Friday. Sims called her an “old white lady” and shamed her for shaming women’s bodies for about eight minutes. We appreciate you trying to stand up for women’s rights, but dude, did you really think recording yourself verbally attacking someone was a good idea? This guy happens to be playing a role in making huge political decisions for our state. How promising.

Number in years since Allen Iverson got up on a podium and chastised legendary Daily News basketball writer Phil Jasner for asking why he wasn’t coming to practice. The press conference and famous “We talkin bout practice” line have been immortalized in hip-hop tracks, t-shirts and graffiti art, and the statement turned 17 years old this week.

We should also note that in true Iverson “fuck you” fashion, the Sixers legend casually strolled into the team’s locker room after Game 3 on Friday. Funny thing is, a security guard did try to slow him down and then saw it was A.I. and just said ‘fuck it.’ Classic.

earing newly-released albums from Philadelphia’s Nat Turner Rebellion (“Laugh to Keep From Crying”) and Sounds of Liberation (“Unreleased”) is both a breath of fresh, funky air and a set of testaments finely tuned to the tenor of our times – the sociopolitical black consciousness of inequity, racism, poverty and problematic police interaction.

Released by local labels – respectively Drexel University’s MAD Dragon Records via Vinyl Me, Please and Dogtown Records in connection with Brewerytown Beats – each album’s soulful songs, thick rhythms and testifying vibes exist alongside Childish Gambino’s “This is America,” Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright” and Solange’s “A Seat at the Table” when it comes to smartly considered protest music.

While Sounds of Liberation consisted of Germantown/Mt. Airy jazz-heads feeling their way, playing for prison inmates and community centers in their area, West Philly’s incendiary Nat Turner Rebellion was made up of what its leader and songwriter, Joseph Jefferson, called “wild kids...I mean, truly wild kids.”

ceived between 1969 and 1970 with these previously-unreleased albums’ sessions recorded from 1969 to 1972 (in the case of Nat Turner Rebellion), and 1973 (for Sound of Liberation’s second album).

How each came to go unreleased until the present has as much to do with the eternal mess that is the record industry – as well as mystery and missing tapes – as it does with the artists and the new labels who connected to do due diligence when it came to this collective music and their respective looks at community and chaos.

“I don’t think that any of these musicians think about their place in history, what is important today as opposed to yesterday, or how their material from their past is relevant within that,” said Brewerytown/Dogtown label head, Max Ochester.

“What’s important is telling their story, having their story told and getting the music out there. The Nat Turner Rebellion people are doing a good job of getting their story out there, letting everyone know who made this music and why, and what the band was about. We’re doing that too with Sounds of Liberation. These were kids coming of age, expressing themselves, in the name of liberation and spirit and what they stood for at the time.”

Worth a shot

Ask Joseph Jefferson whether or not his Nat Turner Rebellion has a seat at the table with au courant hip hop artists or nu-R&B singers, and he’s not going for it. “Nope,” he’ll say, bluntly. He often speaks with great brevity and directness. “There was nothing like Nat Turner Rebellion before it. There’s nothing like Nat Turner Rebellion after it.”

Did he ever think that the Sigma Sound Studios-recorded blood, sweat and tears of his work, and that of fellow, now-deceased Rebellion members Major Harris, Ron Harper and Bill Spratley would ever see the light of day?

“Absolutely not,” he answered. “Watson had it, and that wasn’t good. I was at a place in my life where those Nat Turner Rebellion recordings were history, so I never looked back.”

That is until somebody made Jefferson – a Virginia native who landed in Philly playing for the Sweet Inspirations and the Manhattans – look back. That, someone, was the Manhattan-based independent music publisher Reservoir Media Management, who acquired Philly Groove and its sister music publishing company Nickel Shoe Music in 2012. Reservoir’s Faith Newman hooked up with Drexel University professor and audio archivist Toby Seay to host Uncovering The Philly Groove, an educational music mixing course based upon Drexel’s acquisition of a treasure trove of reelto-reels, cassettes and DATs left in the vaults of Sigma Sound Studios founder Joe Tarsia.

“What was left was either major label acts’ fare such as outtakes and demos or small labels that just didn’t hold on to its own material, such as Philly Groove,” Seay said. It was within that 7,000+ piece collection that the booty of lost Nat Turner Rebellion tapes was found.

First things first. Watson is Stan Watson, the longtime owner of Philly Groove Records who signed NTR as a vocal quartet in 1970, as his label already had success with another creamy harmony act from Philly, The Delfonics. Soon-to-be-famous producer and composer Thom Bell did A&R for the label and wrote the Delfonics’ biggest hits, such as “La-La Means I Love You.” The femme-fronted First Choice was signed there. Reputed Black Mafia member Bo Baynes reportedly held a position at Philly Groove as a “promoter.”

Jefferson said that despite everything that Watson was or wasn’t, the local record mogul was, at the very least, daring enough to sign Nat Turner Rebellion. “We saw things in a way that was different from how the powers that be saw them – like Philly International’s crew,”

Jefferson said. Watson may have preferred that they sounded like the Delfonics, but he was ready to give deep radicalism and deep funk a try.

So, there was Nat Turner Rebellion with their tight harmonies, their Sly and the Family Stone funk-rock kick, their incendiary consciousness-heightening tunes such as “Tribute to a Slave” and “Getting Higher Together” – and the name’s connection to the Virginia slave insurrection of 1831.

“That name fell into place because of my mother when I asked about Turner,” Jefferson said of a tale that was the soul of black history and independence. “She put me on the path to understanding that situation. And when she was done talking, I thought ‘COOL.’ Until she found out I was naming the band after Turner.

She warned me not to use the name, that she had fears about how and what this group was

Times were changing. I wanted to reflect that.”

Jefferson and his friends (“none of those guys were as devoted as I, though”) never truly did get a chance to reflect its rage. Though “Slave” was released as a single to zip chart success, an album’s worth of additional radical songs never saw the light of day. By 1972, after much band in-fighting (“I said we were wild, it wasn’t pretty what happened between us,” noted Jefferson), Nat Turner Rebellion busted apart.

“When I left Philly Groove, there were periods where I was still Nat Turner,” Jefferson said about some of the hardness left behind by the nature of rage (Jefferson apologized to me at the

end of our blunt chat, saying he still has some residual Nat Turner vibes to this day). “I didn’t see much hope there. I was too bust being hopeful about the next thing.” The next thing for Jefferson, in 1972, meant writing the O’Jays’ “Brandy,” the Temptations’ “Aiming at Your Heart” and some of The Spinners’ biggest hits, such as “Sadie.” Of those hits, Jefferson said, “I did what I could do, man.”

Fast-forward to 2014, and Jefferson was happily retired in New Jersey when he received a phone call from Faith Newman about the resurrection of his Philly Groove catalog, and “how I would feel about X if Y would happen,” he said with a laugh. Would he be up to see his precious Nat Turner Rebellion material released if everything was cleared?

Newman had found boxes of photos in the Watson family basement when they were selling Reservoir their label when she came upon photos of Nat Turner Rebellion. “I saw the big Afros, the fists raised, and wondered who this was, why haven’t I heard of them and why didn’t they put out music,” she said. Tracking down Jefferson on Facebook, one thing became apparent. “He wasn’t interested,” Newman said.

“I wasn’t interested,” Jefferson said. “Why? Because I wasn’t interested.”

What changed Jefferson’s mind was consistency and persistence. “Faith was very consistent in her persistence and doesn’t give up easily. She believed in what she believed in, in the same way that I believed in that music when I authored and recorded it in the first place. I don’t know if she convinced me or I convinced myself, but it happened.”

Reservoir had to step up with an undisclosed amount of money.

“This was a product that didn’t belong to me – I didn’t own it even though I wrote it – so they had to make it beneficial to me,” Jefferson said.

He gave the Mad Dragon crew carte blanche as to its mixing and mastering, and ‘Laugh to Keep From Crying’ became a reality.

“Being it’s so relevant with everything going on politically at present, this album was worth the wait,” Newman said.

True to the streets Philly-based jazz guitarist and educator Monnette Sudler never thought audiences would get a chance to hear the free-flying music that she and the rest of her young bandmates in Sounds of Liberation recorded during a fast and furious session at Columbia University’s radio station in 1973. The story is not as dramatic as Jefferson’s, even if Liberation’s music is equally theatrical and wild.

“Our tapes were marked ‘1971’ when they found them in our drummer Dwight James’ basement,” Sudler said.

“And it was only marked as having one song, the almost 11-minute-long ‘New Horizons (Back Streets of Heaven),’” noted Dogtown’s Max Ochester. “It was only after I brought it to Masterworks’ Peter Humphries to digitize that we found out what we had: five beautiful songs intended for its own album.”

Those songs, and that moment, Sudler named as the tipping point for when Philly’s greatest jazz cats got the start of their careers.

The youngest member was 17.

“This is Philly jazz cutting its teeth and staying true to its streets,” Ochester said.

“Even when they gained notoriety, and began playing loft shows in NYC, they were doing community events in Germantown.”

The members of Sounds of Liberation joined together because of the neighborhood. Outreach made them socially relevant.

Though primarily an instrumental outfit (“the choral voices on our albums? I have no idea who or what that was,” Sudler laughed), there’s no denying the sense of being African-American at a time of strife (as if that had ever ended). Social dis-justice is a key theme in their oddly harmonious vibes-and-guitar interplay of “Keno.”]

“We were there for a good cause,” Sudler said of Sounds Of Liberation, an airy, avant-garde jazz band/serious social movement formed in-and-of the Germantown and Mt. Airy neighborhood known as “Dogtown.”

It was built by Sudler, James, saxophonist Byard Lancaster, bassist Billy Mills, percussionists Omar Hill and Willi Brister, and its originator, vibraphonist Khan Jamal.

Originally conceived by the now-ailing Jamal (who co-owned the original Dogtown label and passed it onto his son, Khan Jr., with whom Ochester is partnered), Sounds of Liberation started when the vibes man was living off Chew Avenue, close to Sudler. “I used to work at the YWCA on Chestnut Street with a young guy who had a friend that played vibes,” Sudler recalled. “He kept saying I should meet him, so we were introduced on

the phone – Khan was friendly – and said that he could come to my house and jam. The first thing I thought was how big and heavy those things were, but there he came, with Omar playing congas, and spent the afternoon playing music.”

The communal vibe of Sounds of Liberation kicked in immediately as all of its members lived in one small area, practicing almost daily at Khan’s garage, and continued through to its mission statement of playing for and with the community. Ochester even found paperwork related to Sound of Liberation’s initial desires to become a not-for-profit group playing and composing solely for community-based initiatives.

“I was going through Monnette’s archives, and I found Xeroxed copies of ‘thank you’ letters from the principals of high schools and the warden at a state prison,” Ochester noted.

Unlike Nat Turner Rebellion, the black, socio-political revolution of Sounds of Liberation was a quieter one that found its spirited rage in calm, free jazz verses on its own first, self-released album, “New Horizons,” in 1972 (later reissued by Porter Records in 2010).

Mostly, the revolution was televised and promoted via Sound of Liberation’s dedication to a communal ideal, playing for school children and prison inmates at community centers and jails. “A lot of bands had names such as ours,” Sudler said with a laugh. “There were a lot more opportunities to play for community and families what with all the neighborhood festivals – that was important to keeping music alive and people aware. The musical environment in Philly was different then. You had more community involvement. Everybody was about black awareness, education and liberation.”

Ask Sudler if the intention of Sounds of Liberation was in league with the socio-conscious hip hop of the present day, and she’ll say, “Yes, perhaps, in a roundabout way.”

Sounds of Liberation didn’t so much break apart, but rather spirited itself into diverse solo forms and projects, with several of its members continuously acting as collaborators. Jamal and Lancaster would work together in different configurations throughout the decades and even became business partners in the loosest sense of the term with their co-ownership of the original Dogtown label.

“I told Max that he is a great detective and historian who knows how to tracks things down and be dogged about it – I like that about him,” Sudler said with a laugh. “That’s what this music needs – people who care as much about the sound as they do its intent, with some smarts and willpower to do the leg work.”

hen Ali Awan takes the stage at this year’s NON-COMMvention, the annual event catered to and by public music radio programmers, industry and talent, it will be the big cherry on the icing of the sweetest cake in the greatest meal of his long career.

The Abington-based songwriting singer and guitarist will perform alongside the likes of Morrissey and The National during the multi-day festival running May 14-24.

Awan’s played in Philly punk bands Ballistik and Jane Church, spent time as part of Wild Joy and still plays guitar for Britt Thomas & the Breaker Boys. Now, this Turkish-American has found his own voice, one filled with noisy, jaunty guitar lines laced with hints of blues and mysterious grace notes.

Lovely and lonely, ruminating, inward-looking lyrics marked by deep, cutting vocals are all gathered neatly on his warm and wired, recently-released EP, “Butterfly.”

On the eve of NON-COMM, Awan sat down and thought about the moments of his past that made him the versatile Philly wunderkind he is today.

PHILADELPHIAWEEKLY.COM @PHILLYWEEKLY I know you were born in the Philly area, which allowed you to claim American citizenship. Returning to Turkey, your family’s homeland, what are your first memories?

The first thing that I can remember about growing up in Turkey is the smell of taxis.

It’s such a nostalgic smell for me. Also, the bazaar in Istanbul called Kapali Carsi or Grand Bazaar. It’s this immense maze of shops filled with clothes, textiles, precious metals – some not so precious – honest salespeople, dodgy salespeople. It was one of the first places I thought, ‘If you get lost here, you might never get found.’

ALI, FROM PAGE 17 my lessons. My mom would get me to learn prayers by buying me toys when I remembered one, so maybe that helped with remembering lyrics. The prayers were in Arabic, which we didn’t speak in my household, so you had to remember syllables as well as the order they were in. She isn’t as strict with herself as my dad, but she only eats halal meat – something she does, but my dad doesn’t. I remember going to a mosque for the first time with my dad and the whole congregation says ‘amen’ together. It sort of scared me because it was so loud and slow. I really came to like hearing it after a while, though. It’s like a weird, dissonant chord that sounds nice. I’ve personally never been very religious, though.

I used to go through the motions as a kid to not get in trouble.

Your family moved around a bit – winding up in Saudi Arabia, after Turkey – before you got back to Abington. Did you like bouncing around as a kid, or do you think that you were too young to be bothered?

I loved it. I was in this perfect age where leaving friends didn’t matter as much, and my brain was soaking everything up. I and my mom would play this game in airports, pick a person far away and narrate their inner dialogue out loud. It was hilarious, I still do it to this day. I used to sleep on the floor on airplanes too. I think that’s why I like ambient noise before I go to sleep. The engine hum really helped me not think about the fact that we were in a metal tube flying at hundreds of miles per hour a mile above the face of the earth. Road trips, flights, waking up in a different place during a trip. It’s a lot like touring (laughs).

I ask about traveling because I’m curious if you might feel your nomadic youth became applicable to/influenced your work as a songwriter and its occasional lonely vibe?

Now that I think about it, it’s helped very

much. Knowing how to be happy alone is a life skill. For me, being alone is when I digest my experiences. And that’s basically songwriting, in my opinion. Even if you’re singing/playing while thinking about someone or something else. Phones are robbing us of the pleasure of solitude. Knowing how to say goodbye and mean it is a skill as well.

What sort of childhood memories from the Middle East do you have in regard to what were you listening to there? Was there Western music/rock and roll filtering into the environment, or was it difficult to find?

Maybe that rarity is what makes the rock you do now so passionate and raging.

Good point. I never thought of it that way, to be honest. Perhaps it did make rock and roll mean a lot more to me. I remember stealing candy as a kid in Saudi Arabia, and that they cut your hand off for that, which is true.

That scared the hell out of me. It’s insane.

Rock and roll would’ve been very difficult to find in Saudi Arabia, but not so much in Turkey. I was just too young to really appreciate and seek it out on my own volition while I was based in Turkey. The music that I remember hearing as a kid was mostly pop and folk from both Turkey and Saudi Arabia. The pop music there is a lot like here, just a different language. My mom always had some gems on in the house or car, though. She always loved the Stones, Zeppelin, Bowie, classics like that. She had her book of CDs and a box of tapes she’d bring from place to place when we moved. The foundation.

How does ‘Butterfly’ contain all that we just said and all that you are now – as an artist and as a man – and what do you think your even newer material is going to say about you?

The ‘Butterfly’ EP contains a lot of self-reflection. I’ve been doing a lot of that personally, re-focusing on what I desire from the music industry and myself. Some of the new material will answer a lot of my own questions, and ask a few more.

Song of herself Patti Smith opens and closes a month dedicated to the life of Philly’s greatest poet

O

ne could argue that the last time punk poet Patti Smith played with any connection to her hero – fellow South Jersey native Walt Whitman – was during her 1997 reading-rocking event at Whitman’s Center for the Arts and Humanities in Camden.

So it was refreshing to find her recent show at The Met with her children and her longtime band thoroughly and electrically Whitmanesque: wise, humanist, humorous, sensual, transcendental and starkly real. It also kicked off the start of Whitman’s birthday month and played to the heart of Penn Library’s Whitman at 200 lists of programs.

Smith and her daughter Jesse Paris will participate in Whitman’s birthday event at City Hall (with cake) on May 31, as well as perform a May 30 tribute to Whitman at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Her Met show commenced with a bright, pretty “April Fool” and ending with a spare but no less rousingly anthemic “People Have the Power,” Smith and her band of old (Lenny Kaye, Jay Dee Daugherty) and new (son Jackson on guitar, daughter Jesse on piano) took on the aforementioned Whitmanesque ideals more loudly, clearly and warmly than ever.

“I got all my moves from being in grades 1, 2, and 3 in Philadelphia,” said the one-time local, referencing dance steps and street smarts to a yelling fan in the audience. “I remember every firefly and Philadelphia sky, so don’t give me any shit.”

Smith made Hendrix’s “Are You Experienced?” (with a coda from his “Third Stone From The Sun”), Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” and Midnight Oil’s “Beds are Burning,” all her own, but Philly truly filled The Met to hear signature Smith originals.

These included a lustrous “My Blakean Year” and its bittersweet poetry (“The pain of our existence was not as I envisioned”), a halting take on the sensualist “Dancing Barefoot” and its careening vibrant cousin “25th Floor” with its desire to dance, to fly and to wrap one’s legs around another in full, fleshy flower.

Walt Whitman would’ve been proud.

“Patti is a wonderful example of an interdisciplinary artist who acknowledges WW’s influence,” said Judith Tannenbaum, the artistic director for Whitman at 200. “We invited her to participate in Whitman at 200 based on her profound appreciation for Whitman’s work and its importance for her own poetry and writing.”

Most rejected SEPTA’s claim that this facility would represent an improvement in SEPTA’s existing environmental footprint and questioned building a fossil-fuel burning facility over investing in renewable sources of clean energy, like wind and solar.

But the concerns always came back to the detrimental health effects that come from burning gas in large quantities, which releases toxins into the air that include ultrafine particulate matter, volatile compounds and formaldehyde. These have been consistently linked to severe health problems and early death.

In terms of air quality, Nicetown is already overburdened with one of the most abysmal air qualities in the city, and among the worst in the country. One retired school nurse from a Nicetown school recounted children coming in from outside after recess “gasping for air.”

She also remembered carrying one student to the school’s health center so her colleague could deliver another lifesaving breathing treatment to the child.

At the hearing, the resident’s lawyer made the closing argument that SEPTA did not reasonably evaluate the impact of the power plant on the pre-existing poor air quality, given the numerous pollution issues in the area.

Also, she argued the city did not do its duty to protect the citizens of Philadelphia from harm when it gave SEPTA the permit to build the neighborhood facility.

The city’s lawyer, Dennis Yuen, then contended that the residents didn’t prove that the gas plant would be harmful, but rather were relying on “suspicions and speculation” that SEPTA’s plan to emit tons of pollution into the neighborhood would cause the public harm.

He concluded that while “environmental degradation” would occur because of the gas plant, in the city’s viewpoint, this deterioration was OK. SEPTA’s lawyer Andy Klein concluded the hearing by agreeing with Yuen and added that the worsening of the air quality in the neighborhood would not be “substantial” and that the fossil-fuel burning power plant would actually be a net gain for the environment.

In another “did he just say that” moment, Klein took issue with the depiction of the Nicetown power plant as environmental racism as outrageous. “In this day and age, it’s an unfortunate reality that people can easily throw around claims of racism… and sadly, it’s all too common for folks to do so if they don’t have a legitimate basis to oppose a project,” Klein said.

What he left out was that environmental racism is not only confined to the deliberate placement of toxin exposure near persons of color. As the New York Times noted, environmental racism is the result of segregation and low economic status that leaves a disproportionate number of persons of color living next to industrialized areas that subjects them to substantial pollution. It is debatable whether

SEPTA would have tried to get away putting Philadelphia’s soon-to-be third-largest gas burning generator anywhere else in the city.

But the fact that SEPTA sees no problem adding a considerable amount of air pollution to a community that is over 90 percent African American, mainly low-income, and in which 1-in-3 children have been diagnosed with chronic inflammation of their lung airways, is particularly concerning.

Smith and others view the situation similar to the events in Flint, Michigan, where authorities ignored the complaints of residents and environmental groups and ended up poisoning the city and its predominantly poor black residents. “You don’t get the data until the [damage] is done,” Smith said. “The experiment is about to happen when they flip the switch. That’s when the experiment begins…

It’s a disaster waiting to happen.”

Smith also told me that she fears for her and her daughter’s life. “I can’t sleep. I’m scared. My daughter is scared. She looks out her bedroom window and [the gas plant] is what she sees,” Smith said.

Since moving to the neighborhood over a decade ago, Smith now requires two daily medications to treat the severe allergies that she never had prior to the move. Her young daughter already takes inhaled steroids twice a day to control her persistent asthma in a neighborhood that already has one of the worst air qualities in the city.

“My question is ‘why that area? Why in that particular community?’” she asked, placing blame on those responsible for bringing the plant to the community, and those in power who did nothing to stop it. “They have no respect, no regard for people,” she added. “It’s like [we] are dispensable.”

The L&I Review Board has not yet decided on the fate of the permit to allow the power plant, but they are accepting public comment on the issue until May 30 at michelle.rand@ phila.gov. While residents and advocates say they are not hopeful the permit will be revoked, they are hoping SEPTA will at least run the facility at limited times, take steps to minimize detrimental health effects from the power plant and continue to monitor activity at the site to prevent Nicetown from becoming the next Flint.

In the meantime, Smith has made plans to move her daughter’s bedroom and has no intention of going out on her porch, enjoying her deck or tending to her garden as she has for the last decade, fearful of what she and her family may be exposed to. Once she can retire, she plans to move out of her home and leave the city. “They don’t care about me here,” she said. “I’m just hoping to get away with the least damage.”
