THE REAL HERO THIS ELECTION: MEMES

Depending on where you stand politically, the 47th President of the United States has been appointed or is still undecided. However, we think the entire city can agree that choosing the next commander-in-chief is/has been an extremely nerve-wracking experience compounded on an already insane year.

Perhaps the one thing that certainly got Philadelphia as a city through it all – besides being at the center of the political universe for a 72-hour period – were the incredible memes that this election has stirred up.

They say the internet never fails, but in this case it most certainly didn’t disappoint as there were plenty of memes to chuckle through on both sides of the fence.

Saxophonist and composer John Coltrane was a big deal in Tate’s household growing up. “We weren’t allowed to listen to hip hop or anything like that growing up,” he said. “Just R&B oldies – a lot of Stevie Wonder – and jazz.

AND I HATED JAZZ AS A KID.” As Tate got older, understanding jazz meant understanding Black America and its singular forms of expression, of its music. Whether Tate liked it or not, he began to listen to jazz as a grounding tool, part of a self-meditating process not unlike those in martial arts. “If things went out of whack, jazz settled me …

With that, food – Tate’s cooking, in particular – like sound, could transport those who interacted with it. Could communicate thoughts to its consumer. Cause a reaction. “I learned that so much of jazz’s vanguard was about abandoning what you think you know,” he said. “When I began this journey into cooking, I too abandoned what I thought I knew. From there, food became sound, music, even noise if I needed it to be. I was in control of its action and the reaction It could incite.”

As most diners do not think quite as conceptually as Tate might, to give his food a framework, the chef added in his poetry into each menu item’s description, as an addendum to the meal. For example, the aforementioned “Smoked Turkey Necks in 1980’s Philadelphia.” Tate laughs when he said, “Now, most guests would be like ‘why the fuck don’t you just call it smoked turkey neck? Why’s it gotta be all that?’ So, it’s right there, now, in poetic form?”

My question for Coltrane215? Is Tate Bop and blues-era Coltrane? Is he modal Coltrane?

Is he raga Coltrane? Is he free and deeply spiritual Coltrane?

“I’m all of it,” he said. “I’m not speaking for all Black chefs here, but I know that a lot of them do not want to be pigeonholed making

fried chicken. A lot of Black musicians don’t want to be pigeonholed and tied to the blues. I used to feel like that. But. Know what? I love fried chicken. There’s a stereotype. There’s a stigma. Fuck that. If I want to make fried chicken, I’m gonna make it. If I want to make steak tartare dressed in black squid ink to comment about blackface, I’m gonna do that too.”

Tate was, and is, looking to take you to a place with each note, or meal.

But he is setting the tone for each conversation. Just like Coltrane, who set the tone, literally and figuratively, throughout his career. “Coltrane might say, we’re doing ‘Psalms,’ right now and reach for the highest spiritual place, by calling it ‘A Love Supreme.’ Or if he said, we’re doing a standard like ‘My Favorite Things.’

He wasn’t afraid of himself. I had to get over the same hump, of what people would think of me.”

Fried chicken? He’s going to do that.

Candlewood Path (An Egg Drop for John and Alice), a vegetarian broth dish paying homage to the married Contranes, as well as to his own recent nuptials? Tate is going to do that, too.

Not everything that Tate does is ever-so linear. It is, however, interconnected. “History and experience are fluid. The past is not. The past is present, and we still carry it. Something that has been difficult for Black folks in this country is the reconciliation of the past,” he said. “To intentionally forget means the thing still exists, and so we separate ourselves from history – an intentional separation.”

Another example: The title of the dish, “Chlorendi,” comes from a 1898 play by Paul Laurence Dunbar, composed by William Cook, and was conceptualized over a meal of raw beef, chopped-up raw peppers and onions and beer.

“When I read those ingredients, that sounded like a tartare to me. The more I read about the play, I realized that it challenged agency over Black existence as it was represented, then, in the entertainment industry. I also learned that the rumor that Black actors had to wear blackface during the play wasn’t true.

Another challenge. I learned to not care, or be weighed down, by fact. When people are as removed as Black people from their history, we’re left to imagine what our histories were.”

Tate relates this attraction to storytelling – something he first embraced in his youth – to writer Kevin Young’s “The Grey Album.”

Named after the Danger Mouse album of the same name, Young’s book talks about the power of lying, and the glory of fibbing. “When I was a kid, if you lied, you were ‘telling a story,’” said Tate. “But, that is what Black people have always had to do: for survival, for recovery, for safety, for amusement.”

The connections that I am building through food are less about me recovering something for myself than they are recovering something more about our existence – we were, we are, we can.”

The smarts, the soul and the spirit that Tate had for art, poetry, jazz, and food – combined with his travels throughout the South – congealed and revealed itself in his first Honeysuckle meal in November 2018 at Fitzcarraldo in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This Ligurian-style, Italian bistro was where Tate would make a meal with the entirety of his philosophy on display, initially based on the fact that he wasn’t seeing who he was, or what he thought, reflected in the restaurant industry of 2018. “Black, white, whatever,” he said. “I saw very framed notions of what Black food was, but, that didn’t necessarily focus on Black life.”

Tate wanted his food, his Honeysuckle menus, to resonate with the totality of what it means to be a Black man – all of his concerns and cares, as well as that of his community and their environment. The menus may have begun with poems and personal history, but blossomed so to recognize the whole of Blackness.

PHILADELPHIAWEEKLY.COM @PHILLYWEEKLY “It was just a meal,” he said of Honeysuckle pop-ups’ early and quick success.” Just an organic thing that was happening, and I did not realize that it would have any impact, let alone THIS impact,” said Tate of Honeysuckle’s sold-out, ticketed, 2019 array of multi-course event dinners in New York, and the sort-of national press recognition he would receive.

“It’s weird, though. It’s only lately that I have to explain this is a thing, which means that it’s no longer organic. I don’t want it to be formulaic. I didn’t want it to be formulaic. In fact, the gala and the dinner we cancelled for this weekend was going to be the first time since March – since the pandemic started – where I would be making food in that manner. Since COVID, everything I have cooked has been straight-forward: grilled fished, fried okra. Matter of fact.

And that too has felt great.”

Through the pandemic, Tate learned that simple preparation means as much as grander proclamations within his culinary statement. “I’m coming to grilled fish with the same brain that I came to those other dishes.” When he says that doing more basic dishes is like playing “Take the A-Train,” Tate means that playing the favorites is as joyful and rewarding as tucking in to the deep cuts, and the rare B-side.

One of the places that Tate had a chance to show off his simpler, still gorgeous dishes was at the start of the COVID-centric pop-ups hosted at South Philly Barbacoa, and curated

by Cristina Martinez and Ben Miller. Speaking to his interaction with the Italian Market restaurateurs, Tate – who after the pandemic initially started working for Caviar and selling poetry online for money – was reluctant, but drew upon his (then) new-found taste for simpler preparations. “In a word, Cristina and Ben were generous. More than generous.”

After talking about the Martinez-Miller marrieds with such tenderness, Tate joked that his experience cooking for and with other chefs in Philly aided him, helped make him the chef that he is today. “Did I love being called a ‘dickhead,’ for how I made beets? No. Did it make me improve how I cooked beets?

Yes. Maybe that’s Stockholm Syndrome. I don’t know. I just know that I want to do the right thing going forward.” Ask him if this city knows enough about other Black chefs such as Sylva Senat, Elijah Milligan and Aziza Young, or Black restauratrepeneurs such as Kevin Parker and Ilisha Sampson, or Blackowned communal efforts whose goal is to help those in need of food such as The Mama-Tee. com Community Fridge, and Tate said it is all just business as usual when it comes to local

diners and other Philly food writers. “The media doesn’t care until something tragic is happening,” he said. “All of the celebration of Black culture in this city isn’t happening because it was suddenly ‘A HA. BLACK PEOPLE.’ It happened because traumatic things occurred. Bad things are happening in Philadelphia. So, there is some movement to right wrongs, but, even those things aren’t getting to the root of the problem.”

The problem is, in reality, the system that marginalizes Black people, and keeps them in the shadows. The solution is for everyone to turn that system around completely, and not just write overly long think pieces weighed heavily by all manner of guilt. Another thing, according to Tate, is that Black people aren’t aware of many of the offerings that restaurants have to offer. “The restaurant industry in Philly is more than just Max’s Cheesesteaks, DeWhite’s BBQ and Warmdaddy’s,” said Tate. “Mention Le Bec-Fin to Black people in Philly? Maybe they know about it.

I know that when I was growing up, I didn’t think that shit was for me. A good night out, fine dining to me then, was Houlihan’s. I didn’t know who Suzanna Foo was until I got in the restaurant industry. There’s an invisible wall – a disconnect – and bringing Black folks across that is not the community’s work, it is that of the city. Craig LeBan could have gone into the neighborhood years ago and found good food, but he didn’t care. We, Black people, only exist when something bad happens.”

Good things happen too, spouting forth from Tate’s Honeysuckle vibe, and his outward-looking vision. That means, in a small way, that Tate, considering the healthy food options say, on Lancaster Avenue between 40th and 42nd, would playfully craft a “Chef’s Salad” for his upcoming Honeysuckle menu during December’s benefit. “After 7 p.m., after parents get home at 8 p.m., the only healthy options for the family are pizza and a chef salad. As an artist and as chef, I’m here to examine myself and the world around me.”

There is his summer marriage to Cybille St. Aude, a young chef from Long Island who cooks Haitian food (the youngest of four children, she was born in the U.S. in opposition to her Haitian-born fam) and writes children’s books. “I keep my writing separate from my food as I am establishing my identity,” she said. “But seeing how Omar makes those connections is helpful for me to think of my food and my writing in that sense.”

Cybille also already acts in tandem with Tate when it comes to building her own bridges to Haitian culture and creating menus. “I didn’t understand Omar’s Philadelphia at first, the West Philly one and its intricacies in opposition to the super-glamorized vision of the Rocky statue and cheesesteaks,” she said.

“But once I got to know it, Philly’s community wasn’t so different than where I come from.

I’m looking to come to terms with my own version of Philly unrelated to Omar’s. There are many historical ties between Philly and Haiti, that I wasn’t aware of until I moved down here

and started digging – like the well-to-do Haitian caterers who left the island right before the Revolution and set up shop here. But, with the community center and the dinners, it’s crucial that I am plugged into Omar’s vision too.”

Also, in a bigger way, there is the very reason and vision for the benefit in the first place: Tate’s plan for a brick-and-mortar space in West Philly using the principles of Honeysuckle to explore Black culture and history, in a community center-esque fashion (The GoFundMe for the project has raised $83,330 of its necessary $250,000 goal), with food and art as its primary tools in which to examine Blackness. “I want to take back the notion that big box grocery stores were meant to be solutions to community problems…. It doesn’t work that way,” he said. “I want people to come to our market to get things that they need, that they want, and to know they are supporting Black businesses – and not just mine, as the goal is to have 90 percent of our distribution network be Black and minority farmers, artists, makers and producers.”

During his time creating Honeysuckle and travelling through the South to do so, he discovered his Northside of Charlestown, NC, roots and the family’s connection to farming.

Back home in West Philly, Tate is including like-minded (and doing) Black farming families into December’s benefit/meal/ installation and his upcoming community center in connection with BUGS, the Black Urban Growers, that collates a network of farmers indigenous to the northeast. “The challenge is to make food cost-effective for everyone involved, and affordable for your table,” said Tate.

Along with live cooking and a hearth for delicious wood-fired menu items (“also to remind people that this is how cooking started in his country: over fire”), Tate seeks to give this community center a café component that, with the moving of tables and chairs, can become a supper club, an art gallery, a lecture hall, and an activation and education space.

And Honeysuckle, the name that goes beyond the community-at-large into something more warmly familial? The row home that Tate grew up in had a honeysuckle at its front step, a welcoming bush. Working backward from the present to the past, everything that Omar Tate has done has been about getting back to the bush, to home.

As GOA notes, in Philadelphia, one cannot carry a gun openly or concealed without an LTCF. With the excessive delays in LTCF processing, new gun owners, or those with an expiring permit, cannot legally defend themselves when leaving their homes.

According to the lawsuit, one plaintiff contacted the Philadelphia Police Department Gun Permit Unit on or about Aug. 18, 2020, after repeated attempts over roughly two hours.

The plaintiff was scheduled for the earliest available appointment to make his application, on June 22, 2021.

Another plaintiff whose gun license to carry firearms expired, attempted to call the Gun Permit Unit for an appointment after multiple attempts without success and he has not been able to schedule an appointment to make his application. Other plaintiffs cite similar issues of appointments months ahead or not being able to get through to the Gun Permit Unit at all.

A right delayed is a right denied, is the view of the plaintiffs. With the rioting, looting and general lawlessness in the city, many Philadelphians believe they need to protect themselves, their families and businesses with a gun.

Green Party: Community should control the cops Editor’s note: The following is a statement from the Green Party of Philadelphia regarding the death of Walter Wallace Jr. We, the Green Party of Philadelphia, wish to express our deepest, warmest condolences to the family and friends of Walter Wallace Jr., another young Black man mercilessly gunned down by officers of the Philadelphia Police Department.

We condemn in the strongest possible terms the Philadelphia PD’s overreliance on lethal force, and we unapologetically support the constitutionally protected right of protesters to rise up against yet another police murder. Despite the fervent efforts of Walter Wallace Jr.’s mother to calm her son, the whole world witnessed how Wallace Jr. was shot and killed in front of his mother, as she begged them not to shoot.

We are saddened to read that the police used such deadly force even though they had been to his home twice earlier that day, as he had a history of mental health challenges, which they should have been aware of. Additionally, we note that people facing a mental health challenge are 16 times more likely to be shot and killed in such a confrontation with police. Indeed, one of the questions among others is why police continue to be sent to contend with mental health situations.

Thus, in light of this history of deadly violence, not only do we demand a quick, yet

thorough, and transparent investigation of this tragedy; but we also call yet again, along with so many others, for community control of the police. Community control over the police is a principle of democratic self-determination to end abusive practices. The community should have a direct say about who has the right to detain, arrest and use force.

The community should have access to a process to help set policy, budgets, decisive action for misconduct, etc. The primary institution for this community control is an elected Civilian Police Control Board with subpoena power. We are proud to state we are the only party in this election year to call for community control of the police.

We call on communities to organize themselves to identify those mental health professionals who can be called in times of crisis, as opposed to the police. Additionally, we call on city leaders to make more of a priority, the fair and proper funding of resources in various communities, i.e., mental health services; substance abuse treatment programs; affordable housing; job training for living wage, union jobs; affordable, accessible child care; recreation and educational activities for youth, etc. This is where taxpayer revenues need to be going, and not for more – and bad – policing.

What happened Oct. 26 is just one more tragedy too many.

TRUMPADELPHIA?

The votes are in, and barring any shock litigation, Pennsylvania has flipped back from Republican to Democrat in the presidential contest. The top story is that Joe Biden won the Commonwealth’s twenty electoral votes and, with them, the Presidency. Recounts may happen, but they are unlikely to change that result.

Within that story, though, are trends from which Republicans can still take some comfort. For all the concentration on the late-breaking vote out of Philadelphia, Trump’s performance in the city actually improved: in 2016, he won 108,748 votes in the city, or 15.4 percent of the total; this time around, as the count nears completion, Trump has tallied 127,723 Philadelphia votes, amounting to a three percent increase at 18.1 percent.

Had Trump’s totals improved as much statewide as they did in Philly, he would have won the state easily.

Philadelphians are dancing in the streets and claiming credit for the win, but Democratic gains in the suburbs and small cities around the state were responsible for Biden’s claim on Pennsylvania, not Philadelphia.

Trump’s Philly vote expanded in two interesting ways that we can see by comparing ward-by ward vote in 2016 and 2020. Trump’s strength in 2016 was in Northeast Philly, South Philly, and the Riverwards (the less gentrified portions of Fishtown, and up to Kensington, Port Richmond and Bridesburg). This has not changed in 2020, but it has deepened, as Trump picked up larger majorities in some of these regions. This may come as a surprise to many who imagined that Trump’s vote there in 2016 was primarily a protest vote, or a vote against Clinton specifically. After four years, Trump got more votes in these neighborhoods than ever.

It is evidence of a true sea change in the Republican base. Even as the GOP continues to struggle in wealthier inner suburbs of Philadelphia, its support among white working-class Philadelphians has grown. The only bright spot in the Northeast for Biden was the 55th and 64th wards; these wards, roughly equating to Mayfair and Lexington Park, are the most heavily Irish in the city. It stands to reason that Biden’s Irish Catholic background may have influenced enough of these voters to stave off the decline in voter share he saw in other parts of the Northeast.

Biden scored slightly better in those two wards than Clinton did, but neither approach

Obama’s 2012 dominance there. Biden also fared better in the neighborhood than fellow Irish-American Jim Kenney did in his 2019 mayoral reelection, when Democrats failed to carry the 55th and 64th wards in a city-wide race for the first time since 2003. The region is one in which Republicans can look to remain competitive.

Another trend that is less obvious at first glance is the degree to which Trump added votes from non-white Philadelphians.

Trump’s strength among working-class voters was not limited to white working people. We already know that his share of the non-white vote nationwide was the highest for any Republican since 1960. A ward-by-ward look at

Philadelphia shows a mirror image of this national phenomenon.

In 2012, Barack Obama received 100% of the vote in 27 divisions, all of them in predominantly black neighborhoods. In 2016, Hillary Clinton had just three unanimous divisions.

This year, Joe Biden had just one, division 14-06 in North Philadelphia. This reflects the change in many of the majority-black neighborhoods in the city, where Trump improved by about three to five percent. It also serves as proof against conspiracy theories about the vote in Philadelphia. If the Democrats were stuffing ballot boxes, Trump would have done worse in Philadelphia – not better.

In Philadelphia’s Latino neighborhoods,

the effect was even greater. In certain areas of North Philadelphia, Trump improved by double-digits, a reflection of Biden’s trouble with Hispanic voters nationwide. It also makes clear that the problem was not limited to Cuban-Americans, of whom there are not many in Philadelphia (fewer than 4,000, according to the 2010 Census). More than 120,000 Puerto Ricans call Philadelphia home, and in the wards where they are most populous, Trump improved the most. The seventh ward was Trump’s best by this measure, as the margin between him and his Democratic opponent shrank by 22 percentage points.

Trump did not win any division in a nonwhite neighborhood, but in picking up scores of extra votes in each one, he cut into Biden’s overall total.

For the second straight election, Trump challenged the idea that Republicans could not compete with non-white voters. If future Republican candidates can continue this trend, it will remake the political landscape in Pennsylvania and beyond.

Where did Trump lose vote share? Mostly in areas inhabited by rich and upper-middle-class whites and college students. Indeed, Biden’s best improvements are as good a map as any of the path of gentrification in Philadelphia; if a lot of your neighbors are benefitting from the ten-year property tax abatement, you probably live in a ward where Biden added votes over 2016. Center City, University City, Chestnut Hill, Manayunk, and the area around Temple University got more Democratic than four years ago, though not by enough to offset Trump’s gains in the working-class neighborhoods.

On election night, Josh Kraushaar of National Journal looked at similar results from Florida and announced, “The path forward for the GOP: Multiracial working class party.”

Philadelphia’s vote is more evidence that this is not just a viable option for the GOP, but the only viable option.

Trump’s personality may have been toxic to suburban voters, but his policy shifts toward jobs and protectionism — and the Democrats’ shift towards more elite, academic interests — brought new voters into the Republican Party.

There are people in big cities who are alienated by the Democratic Party’s lurch to the extreme left and will support a Republican with the right message. What the GOP does with this knowledge in future elections could make the difference between winning and losing.

Masked Philly: Jose Garces In Icepack’s continuing saga of asking mask-donning local celebrities what they’ve been up to, beyond the pale, during C-19’s pandemic, I reached out, this week, to Jose Garces: Philadelphia Iron Chef, bon vivant, Image | Courtesy of Jose Garces restaurant owner and music lover.

Along with listening in and watching more than a few virtual live concert showcases, Garces, on the personal tip, spent most of his pandemic off-time installing a small garden on his roof. “I spent a good portion of the summer tending to my herbs and vegetables and learning more about small-scale urban farming,” he said. “I loved being able to pluck fresh tomatoes in the morning for a sauce that evening. It’s been a good experience that helped me maintain my center throughout all the

uncertainty.”

Regarding that uncertainty, Garces has slowly taken to expanding his eateries’ outside dining options, “like with the addition of the patio at Distrito, increasing our takeout and delivery capabilities, and performing some much-needed renovations to the Olde Bar and expanding its menu offerings significantly.”

The mask?

Garces, the consummate health-conscious professional, is all for them. His favorite mask was made by his friend Wayne Glassman, a tailor in Center City. “He’s got a store on Sansom called Wayne Edwards Workshop that I’ve been going to for years, so it only made sense to ask him to craft my mask. One of my favorite things about this mask, aside from fabric design, is that it’s lightweight enough that it doesn’t distract me and that it causes minimal fogging to my glasses.”

Along with prepping for a future where masks won’t be required (“I’m going to meet up with friends and family, hug them, and share a big meal when that happens. I want to shake the hand of a new acquaintance, interact with people outside of my bubble”), Garces is revamping a new seafood-heavy menu and re-mixing the dining areas at The Olde Bar, launching a web-based cooking show called “Cooking Space” that just wrapped filming, rolling out new menus at Village Whiskey and re-opening Tinto this weekend with some big fresh additions and surprises for wine aficionados. “I’m really excited about all of the projects that I’m working on,” he said, cheerily.

hiladelphia-based psych-pop quartet Secret Nudist Friends recently released three long-awaited singles. These first three tracks off the band’s forthcoming LP, “I Don’t Like It,” premiered consecutively late last month on Bandcamp and all other streaming services.

In “Search Party,” vocalist Deb Gilmore leads the band on a chaotic search for their elusive “Baby.”

Staccato keyboards, intensifying rhythms, sneaky guitars, and frantic group vocals guide the way.

Matty Klauser returns to their usual spot at the helm on “Outside,” a rich, guitar-drenched psych tune, exploring isolation and mental health. The band ventures into Beatles-esque vocal territory with warbled layered leads and four-part response harmonies, as the song crescendos to its climactic sigh.

“I Don’t Like It!” is the title track of the LP, and challenges a society in which people are criticized for being who they are. Gilmore implores us to stand up for ourselves and each other in a world where this isn’t always a given.

PW recently caught up with Klauser to talk about the new music and more.

Let’s go back to the beginning.

How did the band form? How did you decide to call yourselves Secret Nudist Friends?

The band has taken several forms over the years. It originally started as the solo project of a friend of mine from college. How have the pandemic and all of the closures that came with it impacted the band? How have you spent your downtime?

The pandemic had immensely changed all of our lives. I run and work a lot of shows and work all kinds of music jobs, and they disappeared in a heartbeat. It’s been slow going figuring out how to be a musician right now. Missy has taken the opportunity to work full time on a farm for the last few months. Brian spent some time in Western New York, and Bee has been traveling the backroads of the west coast, working on farms and visiting intentional communities.

Talk a little about being a part of the Philly music community. Is the city supportive of local bands? Are there any local artists who’ve influenced your music – or ones you just like to listen to?

We are all super involved in the music scene and have helped run venues, including Tralfamadore and Pleasure Mountain Ballroom, co-founded the goodhowareyou artist collective, Missy and I ran a booking company called Paper Scissors Media, and countless other involvements. This scene is incredible and incredibly familial and supportive! We only exist because of the love and support of the DIY and music scene here and would have never gotten off the ground without it! We love our label mates so much, especially Trash Boy, Broke Body, canine 10, Kelsey Cork and the Swigs and so many other amazing bands and artists!

What’s ahead for Secret Nudist Friends once the pandemic passes? Back to live shows? And what are the best ways for your fans to keep up-todate with what you’re doing?

Since the world is indefinitely not a hospitable place for live shows, we are going to release this record and hopefully put out even more recordings. There’s definitely some other songs we’d love to put out into the world. Don’t get me wrong, WE LOVE TOURING, but who can say what that’ll look like for a long time?

We are each focusing on finding what inspires us in this life and finding peace and creativity.

I feel like that can lead to infinite possibility!

ritics, fans and fellow comedians agree: Brian Regan is one of the most respected comedians in the country, with Vanity Fair calling him “the funniest stand-up alive,” and Entertainment Weekly calling him “your favorite comedian’s favorite comedian.”

Regan’s Netflix series, “Stand Up And Away! With Brian Regan,” premiered last Christmas Eve. He and Jerry Seinfeld executive produced the four-episode original half-hour series that combines sketch comedy and stand-up.

Regan also reprised his role of “Mugsy” in the third season of Peter Farrelly’s TV series, “Loudermilk,” on The Audience Network. Farelly personally cast Regan in the series, which premiered in 2017 to rave reviews with Regan earning accolades for his portrayal of a recovering addict who is estranged from his family. Just where and when “Loudermilk” will resurface is still up in the air.

A regular on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Regan is the rare guest whom the show invites on for two segments: a performance segment and a segment on the couch to chat with Jimmy.

Previously, he was a regular guest on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” making 28 appearances on the CBS show.

He made a scene-stealing cameo in Chris Rock’s film, “Top Five,” and is a guest on two episodes of Seinfeld’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” on Netflix.

PW recently caught up with Regan to talk about comedy in 2020 and his upcoming show.

What topics are you covering on stage in 2020? Have you changed your routine in light of the pandemic, the political scene and the social unrest the nation has seen?

I just shot a Netflix special this past weekend, which should be out in the first quarter of ‘21. Because of that, I plan to be in the process of purging that material, and replenishing with new. So, not sure what kind of stuff I will be kicking around in my head when I get to Philly. But I will most likely have at least 20 minutes on owls. (That is a joke.)

You’ve been back on stage for a little while now. Are you getting a sense that people, after everything that’s gone on this year, are looking for an outlet or escape

COMEDY from all of the more serious issues of the day? Are they ready to laugh again?

I think a lot of people are anxious to get back to some sense of normalcy. I’ve been enjoying being back in the comedy clubs. The tables are far apart, and many people are wearing face masks, so it’s kind of strange. But, overall, it’s fun to be able to get a few laughs... especially with my owl jokes. (That is a joke.)

How did you spend your downtime during the pandemic?

I think I am doing what a lot of people are doing during the pandemic – backgammon, puzzles, wine, TV binge-watching, and sleeping. (I could be an Olympic sleeper.)

Later this year, you will reprise his role of Mugsy in the third season of Peter Farrelly’s TV series, “Loudermilk,” on The Audience Network. Did the pandemic impact production of the show?

Season 3 of “Loudermilk” was shot before the pandemic. So, it’s in the can and ready to go. The platform it was on – DirecTV’s Audience Network – is going away, so the show, including the yet-tobe-seen season 3, is being shopped around to new platforms. I hope it comes out soon because I was allowed to do some pretty cool stuff as an actor in Season 3.

Last year, you told NPR that, when you first began doing stand-up, you had some four-letter words in your act, but that it didn’t feel natural to you. In that same interview, Ray Romano said, “I just think the degree of difficulty is much harder for Brian and I just give him more credit for it.”

Do you think it’s harder for comedians who work “clean” than those who work “dirty”?

I try not to feel there is a competition between “clean” comedians and “dirty” comedians. In fact, I don’t even like to use the word “clean” to describe what I do because it tends to send out the wrong connotation in regards to my comedy. The Beatles were clean, but imagine if all their promos said, “Check out the clean Beatles!”

In addition to live performances, which you have scheduled throughout 2021, what else are you working on? Will we see you in other series or for some guest appearances?

I had a standup/sketch hybrid show on Netflix called “StandUp and Away!” I am hoping to get that (or a similar) show on another network soon. It was fun doing sketches.
