On Tuesday, the U.S. Senate Finance Committee put seven pharmaceutical companies on the hot seat questioning the validity of exorbitant prices for various medications. In the meeting room was executives from two regional companies in Merck and Johnson & Johnson. You know it must really bad if senators are now questioning why drug prices force people to choose between buying prescriptions and eating. For example, according to an Inquirer report, one executive in the room received a multi-million dollar bonus on the profits of a single drug. You read correctly: multi-million dollar bonus.

In less than a year since one of its managers called the cops on two Black guys for not doing a “hurry up and buy,” the Seattle-based coffee chain is actively building some gaudy megastore in Fishtown, the home base of La Colombe and now is said have struck a deal with the city to open one on Dilworth Plaza? I mean we get that its a tourist trap and tourists love a good Caramel Macchiato, but putting something that commercial on the footprint of our city’s bedrock is kinda shitty.

If you had your jaw drop at what the city assessed either your property value, land value – or both – when letters were sent out late last year, it appears many members of City Council were equally like WTF. Now, following an audit that found discrepancies in those numbers, all is now on hold and it appears Chief Assessment Officer, Michael Piper is on his way out the door after the City posted his position on its job board. On Tuesday, Councilmember David Oh posted this tweet with his intention to hold a hearing on a proposed bill to reject the 2019 assessments and have the OPA essentially hold true to the projections made by the city office in 2018. eing born into one of Philadelphia’s iconic music families could prove daunting for an artist trying to make their own mark on the industry. But Donn T, the daughter of the late Lee Andrews Thompson (Lee Andrews & the Hearts) and sister to Amir Khalib “Questlove” Thompson (The Roots), has always tried to remain in her “own lane” when it comes to her music. Among Donn T’s many achievements, she has penned a book, Behind the Music, and has worked with the likes of Amy Winehouse, John Legend, Common and Jill Scott. In 2010, Donn T launched her debut album, Kaleidoscope, in London — a location she hoped would create some spatial distance for her to flourish on her own. “My heart is always going to be in Philadelphia because I'm from a Philadelphia music legacy,” said Donn T from her high-rise apartment that overlooks the Delaware River. “The Thompson name and Philadelphia meant so much, and for me I wanted to explore what that meant outside, disconnected from the city you know.” Flying back to her musical coop of Philly, Donn T paired with local artist Chill Moody to form &More, an R&B and hip-hop group. The homegrown duo first performed together at the Roots Jam Session last year in Gramercy, New York and are presently on tour to promote their debut album Ethel Bobcat, set to drop on April 5. Whether the duo will play at Questlove’s annual The Roots Picnic at Festival Pier in Penn’s Landing cannot be confirmed as of yet,
but judging from Chill Moody’s grin, the gig is likely to become an addition to their jampacked calendar. &More can report that they will be performing at Johnny Brenda’s (1201 Frankford Ave) in Fishtown on April 26. Sitting on the couch next to Donn T, Chill Moody explained that unlike his musical counterpart, he has kept his feet more firmly in the city as he built his career. Appointed by City Council as Philly's official musical ambassador, Chill Moody said he is committed to strengthening the inner-city music scene so that leaving to make it big is “a choice, not an inevitability.” “I was the kid that sat in an auditorium in high school where they told me, ‘You know Will Smith sat in that same seat’ or ‘Wilt Chamberlain sat in that same seat,’ explained Chill Moody, who attended Overbrook High. “One day, another kid will be saying, ‘Chill Moody sat in that seat and he built stuff here. He was able to stay here, build infrastructure here, build [an] industry here and make it so you didn't have to leave to make it.’” Taking different routes to get where they are, the two West Philly-born artists met at a Grammy party in 2016. Already fans of each other’s music, they chatted about working together in the near future. While collaboration is common small talk among artists, Chill Moody and Donn T followed up immediately after the party, recognizing their similar sound and mission. “Our styles are similar, in the sense that we use what we feel and put it in the music. We use what we see, what we're around,” explained Chill Moody, who added that &More

PHILADELPHIAWEEKLY.COM @PHILLYWEEKLY is already working on its second album. “We talk about anything from social issues to heartbreak or whatever, but we put it in the music … it'll be a conversation that turns into a song.” Their collaborative process can be challenging at times due to their alpha personalities but can be magical at others. In a Mad Lib style, Donn T will often send Chill Moody lyrics with incomplete phrases and thoughts for him to fill in. Many songs in Ethel Bobcat maintain a social consciousness that veers into the political, such as “WHOA,” which satirizes the news cycle, and “4Ever 1st Lady,” which pays tribute to former First Lady Michelle Obama. But both Chill Moody and Donn T favor “Future Come Around” for its more ambiguous message that allows listeners to judge on the meaning for themselves. “I think that's what music should do,” said Chill Moody on imbuing larger and current themes into his work. “If you're on a platform, you should be speaking on something worth the platform that you're standing on.” “And it absolutely has to now,” added Donn T. “Music has to speak to culture right now. Creativity and art [are what’s] gonna save us.” Hanging on the wall in the living room of Donn T’s apartment is a white, distressed ampersand, a nod to the group’s name. She explained that the group’s title comes from a nickname she had for a childhood friend with an exceptionally long name, who could not speak English and had autism. Donn T still remembers the boy rescuing her as a child, after her hand got trapped underneath a weighty

grate that she was trying to lift in order to retrieve a dime. “Up until this time I was kind of his little angel,” Donn T said of the boy who would follow her around. “I didn't know if he had the wherewithal to be able to run home and get my parents and bring them back, but he was just so clear minded. And he was like an antihero.” The concept of the antihero or the unlikely hero is one that influenced not only the group’s name, but also the name of their first record. Both adamant about energizing and improving their communities, the duo used the fictitious character of Ethel Bobcat to pay tribute to past local leaders who would unite the people. “[Ethel Bobcat is] the character in the community that looked out for the community and gave you what you needed when you needed it,” explained Donn T. “Whether it was a warm meal, whether it was advice. Sometimes she was political, sometimes she was just loving, sometimes she put you in your place.” Both artists noted that today’s communities lack that type of “hero or protector” and have consequently suffered. Filling in for that absent archetype, the album is devised to guide the way and to ignite a generation to action. “We need help, we need a savior, we some type of spark to start some type of movement within society,” said Chill Moody. “The album overall is a spark to start something, whether it might start a conversation, or it might start a protest, or might start a riot, or…” “It might start love,” added Donn T.

efore that damp and rainy Tuesday night, most of the passengers waiting for their trains at Suburban Station had never met Kenny Solomon. We didn’t know about the car accident that permanently damaged his body, or his recent fall at Suburban Station down an entire flight of steps. We also didn’t know anything positive about Mr. Solomon or his likes and dreams. But his introduction to us, and anyone who happened to be in the vicinity that night was resounding. But the scene that unfolded on a recent damp and rainy Tuesday night made sure none of us waiting for a train at Suburban Station would ever forget him. o, after a lengthy buildup in which ABC and the Academy Awards producers floated one ill-advised travel balloon after another, only to abandon them all, the result of Sunday night’s Oscar Awards ceremony was…the leanest, breeziest, most well-produced Oscar telecast in memory. It even, in a surprise, managed to reverse the show's years-long rating decline, according to early numbers. It's just a shame about some of those winners. The Academy, following a double-digit rating decline for its 2018 iteration, has spent the time since coming up with all sorts of gimmicks to bring eyeballs back (see the “popular film” award, presenting some awards during commercial breaks, etc.) but said ideas caused a major backlash and were quickly abandoned. It also took the Academy months later than usual to name a host, but we all know what happened to the idea of Philly native Kevin Hart emceeing the show.

Instead, they got a telecast with a handful of memorable moments, not a great deal of wasted time, and an answer to the question of whether the Oscars even need a host. In short, they don't. There was even a monologue — delivered by the Saturday Night Live veteran triumvirate of Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Maya Rudolph – but it was shorter than usual, and the lack of a real host meant we didn't get any of those excruciating comedy bits with pizza deliveries or selfies or visits to the theater next door. There was one classic-movies montage, instead of three. There wasn't even much comedy, besides a funny costume bit with Melissa McCarthy and Brian Tyree Henry, and a killer Mel Gibson joke by Trevor Noah. The highlight of the night was the musical performance of “Shallow,” by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, shot seamlessly from nontraditional angles, though not far behind was Gaga's own acceptance speech, as well as Spike Lee finally winning his first-ever (non-honorary) Oscar, and jumping into the arms of his frequent collaborator Samuel L. Jackson. It was also wonderful to see Ruth E. Carter finally win for costume design for Black Panther. There were not, however, many other award presentations that gave me much joy, because the Academy flubbed the ball in a serious way with several of the winners it chose this year. Peter Farrelly's odious Green Book won the Oscar for Best Picture, ending Crash's 15-year reign as the most ill-considered film about race to ever win the Academy's top prize. Not only was this gross white savior narrative was somehow honored in the year of If Beale Street Could Talk, Sorry To Bother You, Blindspotting, and BlackKklansman, but its mediocre script somehow took the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, too. On my personal Letterboxd ranking of the films of 2018, I had Green Book listed 315th. Not much better was Bohemian Rhapsody, the Queen biopic that applied every music biopic cliche ever devised to provide a factually dodgy and ridiculously chaste look at Queen's history, one that seemed to always center the perspectives of bandmates Brian May and Roger Taylor, who co-produced the film. It won four Oscars, and none of the four winners uttered the name "Bryan Singer" – the film's credited director – in their speeches, for obvious reasons.
Rami Malek's Best Actor win was a bit more defensible, although I couldn't help but wish the version of the film that was hard-R and starred Sacha Baron Cohen had been produced, with Cohen winning that Best Actor Oscar instead. Also, Bohemian Rhapsody won for Best Editing, despite being one of the worst-edited movies I've ever seen. (“Bohemian Rhapsody won Best Editing for editing out all the gay sex scenes,” Gonzalo Cordova joked on Twitter). A Star is Born, directed by local favorite son Bradley Cooper, entered awards season as the Oscar favorite but fell off that perch for reasons I never quite understood. It had to make do with only the Original Song win and the hope that Cooper will have other bites at the Oscar apple with future directorial efforts. The only local Oscar winner, it turns out, was not Cooper but rather Claire Sliney, a 20-year-old Penn sophomore who was one of the producers of Period. End of Sentence, which won in the Best Documentary Short category. Roma director Alfonso Cuaron won three Oscars, for Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film, and Best Cinematography, and gave three separate acceptance speeches; I'd love to know the thought process behind which things to say in which speech. I was happy to see Regina King win for Best Supporting Actress for If Beale Street Could Talk, a film that I thought was better than all eight of the Best Picture nominees, and Olivia Colman was a pleasant surprise Best Actress winner for The Favourite. In the Documentary Feature category, despite probably my five favorite docs of the year not being nominated, it was nice to see Free Solo upset RBG, while Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a worthy winner for Best Animated Feature. I'm the sort of person who wouldn't mind if the Oscars were five hours long, complete with every technical award, Lifetime Achievement speeches, and no time restriction at all on acceptance speech length. But I realize I'm not most people, and I applaud the Oscar producers for stumbling into the solution of keeping the show brisk, and not having a host. I wouldn't be shocked if they go with the same formula next year. But if they do, one request: Honor better movies.

Feel me flow Anderson .Paak drops true classic neo-soul on a sold-out crowd at the Fillmore BY A.D. AMOROSI
T
here have been three transitional phases in the brief career of the awkwardly punctuated West Coast rapper, singer, drummer, and producer, Anderson .Paak. There were the soulful cuts that he made as Breezy Lovejoy, before hooking up with Dr. Dre and releasing songs on Dre’s 2015 album, Compton. There was the proud moment of Grammy acknowledgment for his sandy, sexy 2016 album, Malibu album. Finally, there was the fanfare
that followed his December 2018 appearance on Saturday Night Live with Kendrick Lamar where .Paak and his stalwart band, The Free Nationals, unveiled barnstorming songs from his then-new album, Oxnard. If ever there was a transformative live performance on SNL – and there have been many, some that date back to David Bowie in a porcelain tux showcase in 1979 to the more recent showing of Kanye West’s 2018 MAGA hat-wearing 2018 escapade – .Paak’s was it.

Drumming, singing and rapping next to hip-hop’s reigning deity, Anderson’s steamy new tracks were dynamic, and his live show that night was one you wanted to see again. Think James Brown and the JBs hot. Think Parliament-Funkadelic exiting from the mother-ship hot. Case in point would arrive here in Philadelphia during a sold-out Sunday night show at the Fillmore, one stop on his appropriately named Andy’s Beach Club World Tour. Starting in shadow behind a thin scrim, Anderson and his band commenced the night with a soft ‘funky drummer’ shuffle from the James Brown days of yore, before quickly moving into an electric piano and muted brass reverie for fan favorite, “The Chase.” From that first moment – and to cease the need to continue throwing out comparisons – the sound of The Free Nationals live had an early A Tribe Called Quest vibe to go with its West Coast’s heavy bass rumble. That latter vibe came through loud and clear, via the low riding “Milk N’ Honey,” as well as the diabolical brass line that the Free Nationals lent Paak as he sang-rasped his way through “Who R U? Yet, by the time this assembly hit up the live spy-film-soundtrack groove of “Bubblin,” with .Paak jumping on the drum kit, the effect was clear: these guys were more Technicolor jazz, a true Blaxploitation of classic R&B than anything else. The Stevie Wonder’s Fulfillingness’ First Finale mixed with Curtis Mayfield’s Superfly score, fused with first album Earth Wind & Fire – all themed for rap-soul types, and all played by California session cats who, in their spare time, used to play as a wedding band. Their mission – like any great wedding band – is to please, broadly, moms and millennials. Therefore, the rapper and his band might have been jamming to orchestral jazz on songs such as “Glowed Up,” but Paak & Co. proved to be as universal as they were occasionally quirky. Plus, they ran through a 21 song set surprisingly fast – another notable wedding band touch. Much of .Paak’s raps and vocal song stylings got lost in the wild mix, and the roar of his band. Still, Anderson’s handsome baritone came through loud and clear through the clackity hip hop of “6 Summers” and his raspy gem, “Tints.” More so than his voice, .Paak’s personality was always sunny and bright, whether he was croon-rapping his way through “The Waters” and “Put Me Thru,” or engaging the Philadelphia audience, bravely. “My sister told me not to crowd surf in Philly since you guys drop everyone,” he said, laughing. “But, I’m going to trust you.” And so, Anderson .Paak braved the crowd-surfing waters, trusted his instincts and dove right in, while the mass that converged the floor at The Fillmore supported him. That’s just the type of night it was.

White, wheat or rye? Philly chefs and personalities are prepping their stations for a month-long sandwich competition in Old City BY ANDREA CANTOR
M
arch in Philadelphia doesn’t have to just be about a highstakes, collegiate basketball competition. Beginning March 4, Old City’s High Street on Market will host Sandwich Battles, its own culinary iteration of March Madness but served with a heaping plate of Food Network’s Chopped. In its inaugural year, the official Sandwich Battles Bracket currently consists of 12 top chefs and well-known Philadelphians. Each Monday for five continuous weeks, three cooks and personalities will fire up the grill using a specific type of bread and mystery ingredient in an effort to make the tastiest sandwich. "We've been working on the line up for a while and can't wait to see what everyone brings to the table,” said Andrew Farley, chef at High Street. “This won't be a tea party. These players are going to give it all they got and as host and official referee, I'm excited to give the play-by-play and make sure all of our attendees have a good time. It'll be nice to be on the floor this time and not in the kitchen." An evolving list of competitors, the lineup already showcases an impressive list of chefs and restauranteurs. Executive chefs competing in the Sandwich Battles consist of Executive Chef Damon Menapace of Le Virtu, Executive Chef Matt Budenstein of Liberty Kitchen and Chef de Cuisine Rob Marzinsky for the Philadelphia 76ers. Chef-owners on the roster include Jon Nodler of Cadence, Michael Strauss of Mike’s

BBQ, Keith Krajewski and Matthew Cahn of Middle Child and Nick Elmi of Laurel, ITV, and Royal Boucherie. The competition will also sport personalities, such as former Philadelphia Eagles player Darwin Walker and Street Gazing founder and former Philadelphia Daily News photojournalist Reuben “Big Rube” Harley. A theatrical experience, participants will be given a sandwich-making station for the showdown to take place. Samples of the final products will then be served to the table-seated audience, all of whom will have voting cards. In addition to sandwich samples and voting rights, guests will enjoy house-made sides and a bucket of beers from a rotating local brewery. The single-elimination tournament will end with the Final Four Championship on Monday, April 1, where one will earn the title of Sandwich Battles Champion and, of course, bragging rights. T
o look at Chris Distefano you’d never know – and he’d never readily tell – that he’s completely kicking 2019’s ass right now. The Staten Island comedian just wrapped up a threenight headline appearance at Punch Line Philly over the weekend as part of a nationwide comedy tour. He also inked a deal with Comedy Central to include multiple projects, most notably a one-hour stand-up special, Size 38 Waist which debut to rave reviews. It’s a deal that Forbes Magazine described as the blueprint for future comics to aspire to with the network, with an animated series, an unscripted series and the continuation of his Friday night series, Stupid Questions with Chris Distefano, renewed for another season.

However, to get Distefano to tell you anything is easier said than done. It’s not him being cagey more as it comes from a place of humility as he will readily admit that he’s still surprised himself at just how much his life has changed since the start of the new year. On the eve of his three-night, sold-out standup at Punch Line, we sat down with Distefano, to see if he’s pinched himself into the reality he’s now facing as a widely successful – and now, highly sought after comic. What’d you think of Philly? What did you think of the crowd at Punch Line? I've been to Philly you know bunch of times both personally and professionally. I've done mostly stuff at Punch Line but I’ve been other places too. Philly...it’s such an honest audience, like it's brutally honest. I like that attitude. I'm from New York and I love performing in front of East Coast fans. To me, the best fans in the world are the ones that are brutally honest. You get that at a place like [Punch Line Philadelphia]. So the past couple of months for you have been fucking awesome, wouldn’t you say? It’s been absolutely unbelievable, man. I go into these interviews knowing what the questions guys like you are going to ask, but I’m still at a loss because I’m still in shock myself. Being able to produce a stand-up about my life and to have an unscripted show, it’s just so wild but so great. I know people may know who I am from my old TV days and some of the stuff I’ve done on radio, but a lot of people have never really seen my standup in long form like that. It was cool to have an opportunity to and to get an opportunity to showcase me in full force. So far all the all the feedback has been pretty positive.
Even though you were a regular on MTV, you still felt like you were on the outside looking in a bit? What’s the transition been like? Honestly, I think now I have validation from my [comic] peers that I can do stand-up comedy. I’m in a room now chatting with respected New York stand-up legends who acknowledge my stand-up now. There’s so many good comics out there now, but there are little breaks that bring your game to another level. Where you go from being a YouTube star to someone that can do stand-up and sell tickets. It’s a Big League feeling not a lot of comedians get a chance to experience, so yeah, I feel very fortunate. Your Comedy Central special, Size 38 Waist was great, but it was the first time you had to tackle a one-hour comedy special. What’s it like having to be funny for an hour? You have to work really hard towards being good for an hour. I worked extremely hard. So hopefully people saw that when they saw the special. Talk about those holy shit moments, where your material just isn’t working out. What’s that feeling like and how does a good comic overcome the embarrassment? You know when you first start out that’s a fear? Like you’re literally in a green room being like, ‘Oh my God what if I bomb?’ But honestly, the minute you realize that the opportunity to bomb is more prevalent than you know and that’s it’s part of the process, you begin to relax a lot more. I don't look forward to bombing, you know, nobody really does, but I’ve learned so much from it and that you just have to have fun with it. I mean, the crowd may just not like you, is a reality. I just have
a plan every time I go out on stage and know that sometimes it just not going to work out. Of all the work you have now, what’s perhaps the one thing you’re most excited about? The only thing I want in my career now and the only goal that I have is to sell tickets. I want to be the comedian that people want to come see. Laughter is therapy and we live in a world where people want it. You want to be the person they choose to provide that therapy. So I’m really trying to bring a bit more awareness about my standup. People are starting to come out to the shows and I feel like that is what I really most excited about. I mean I have a scripted show and a scripted cartoon with Comedy Central and I'm extremely excited that all that stuff will work out. But being able to have a really good show in front of a packed club. You know all those people there to see me and enjoy my comedy so that's what I'm most excited about. You still get nerves though, right? If anything it's not nerves, it’s more like excitement like before a big game. How often are you getting recognized? You know man, that’s probably the best part about all of this, is that I’m really not. Sure, some people come up and will say hello, but for the most part I can walk down any street unrecognized. It’s not like a Kevin Hart or a Jerry Seinfeld who can’t walk anywhere without being mobbed. I just bought a house in New York City and no one knows me. I like that I can make money doing what I love and enjoy my life walk around freely. To be a success but still have anonymity is a huge plus.

n a press conference on Feb. 22, Pennsylvania Auditor General Eugene DePasquale lambasted Philadelphia’s City Commissioners’ lack of transparency in choosing its new voting election equipment. In a deal that could be as high as $50 million, according to DePasquale, Philadelphia’s elections committee selected controversial company, Election Systems & Software. ES&S came under scrutiny late last year when it was found that Luzerne County’s elections director had accepted gifts, including a free trip to Vegas, from the Omaha, Nebraska-based company. After the incident Luzerne County, DePasquale underwent a review of 67 counties and the purchase of voting systems.
