However, before that can happen, Hilco Development Partners, which purchased the complex through U.S. Bankruptcy Court, will first have to remediate over a dozen toxins found in the soil in and around the complex, including cancer-causing chemical Benzene. The fear isn’t so much what’s being breathed in anymore but how far down these chemicals have burrowed into the soil and – gasp – potential groundwater. So if you were hoping for a Target or a Wegmans to arrive in that area, know that’s it’s going to be a little bit.

It’s been five months since the students at Science Leadership Academy and Benjamin Franklin High have been in their home schools but, on Tuesday, classes inside both buildings resumed following the $50 million price tag – $37 million alone for Ben Franklin – to get both schools in OK shape. According to an Inquirer report, 75 percent of city schools have asbestos insulation, so you do the math on what’s to come.

Smart as a bug We, as humans, think that we are the smartest beings on the planet, but an upcoming exhibit at the Franklin Institute sets out to prove that we are far from it. On June 6, the Franklin Institute will unveil The Secret Life of Bugs, examining the intelligence and savvy of some of the world’s most interesting insects. What’s awesome about this is that they got the same people who have created design and special effects for the likes of movies like “The Lord of the Rings,” “King Kong” and “Avatar” to design this one, so that alone has us very excited.

PA is really the birthplace of the anti-choice movement nationwide,” says Elicia Gonzales, executive director of Women’s Medical Fund, an organization that provides financial assistance to women seeking abortion. On top of the increasing legal obstacles, “cost is a primary barrier to someone being able to access abortion care,” Gonzales says. She says last year Women’s Medical Fund was “able to provide financial support to just over 3,200 people. All of the folks we help are living in poverty, earning around $8K a year. (Some) 72 percent of folks calling our Help Line are already parenting one or two children at home.” There doesn’t seem to be a dearth of funds for trying to talk people out of abortion, though. Gonzales says Real Alternatives, a Harrisburg-based anti-abortion group, has received $90 million in state funds, including Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) money, to run anti-abortion centers, which she says, “lie to and manipulate pregnant people out of having an abortion.” “We heard one story of a pregnant person seeking abortion care who was told she had miscarried – only to find out weeks later she was still pregnant,” Gonzales says. It wasn’t always this difficult. “I had planned to spend a weekend out of town visiting my sister, so I didn’t have to ask for time off work,” says Katie, a barista who was living in Center City when she had an abortion in 2011. “I went to the Planned Parenthood clinic that’s right in Center City – I felt very lucky that there were no protesters outside the clinic and I experienced no harassment. I chose a medication abortion – so they did an exam and an ultrasound and then sent me home with the medication. My boyfriend went with me to the clinic and paid for half of

PHILADELPHIAWEEKLY.COM @PHILLYWEEKLY the expense, which I think was $300 with my insurance. “The medication basically induces a very heavy period which happens over the course of a single day – so I spent the day feeling nauseous and bleeding pretty heavily. It was a fairly uncomfortable experience for the one day, but afterwards all I felt was relief. I’ve never regretted my decision,” she says. Since then, Katie says, “I’ve felt compelled to speak about my experience to normalize abortion and be an advocate. I’ve been working the last few years with PP and NARAL as much as I can, doing everything from lobby days to organizing marches to volunteering at events.” Jessa Jordan, a South Philly-based writer, activist and model, has felt similarly motivated to share her experiences. “I had an abortion when I was 20. The easiest part was the immediate decision to have one,” she says. “I’m extremely lucky that very little about my experience was challenging. I could afford the procedure and didn’t have to travel out of my city or state for it. “Planned Parenthood made everything as comfortable and calming as they could,” she says, and supplied her IMAGE: WIKICOMMONS with information about the medications involved in the abortion as well as those that can would help with subsequent pain and nausea. The hard part, she says, was the stigma. “Even though my family and friends supported me through my abortion experience, I felt a lot of societally imposed shame and guilt for choosing to abort my pregnancy. Up to that moment, I never thought I’d be in that position,” Jessa says. She internalized blame even though the pregnancy was a result of a partner removing a condom during sex without telling her. “When I happened upon Shout Your Abortion,” the movement to normalize abortion, she says, “I felt compelled to share my story to set myself free from that shame. I’ve been trying to be authentic and unapologetically myself and aim to empower others to do the same.” She is now in the process of working with Shout Your Abortion to organize Abor-

tionpalooza, a one-day film and arts festival. What accounts for this stigma and these increasing legislative attacks on abortion rights? Nationwide, support for abortion rights has remained steady and over 60 percent of Americans believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases. “Anti-choice folks have seeped into the hearts and minds of folks seeking abortion care,” says Gonzales. “Stigma has resulted in folks wondering if they are going to hell or questioning if the fetus will feel pain. It’s important to note that these are sentiments that were not expressed a decade ago.” “There is still so much stigma regarding abortion, even though it is one of the most common outpatient procedures,” adds Wang. “We need to break the silence and see the people having abortions as the thoughtful, complex, and loving people that they are.” “Abortions are safe medical procedures and everyone who desires an abortion should be able to have one and not have to go through extremes to have one,” says Jessa. “The stories of people who have abortions should be told by those who have that experience, not a narrative of control, fear and propaganda.”

Next is “Radical,” which follows the interrogation, using extreme methods, of a women suspected of terrorism and all of the morals questions that come along with this line of inquiry. The third short is “Super Bul,” one of the more unusual spins on the superhero story, which does not fail to both entertain and stay true to the sociopath thread that keeps the chapters in “Socio” connected. The final chapter in “Socio,” “Hackman,” dives into the world of the serial killer, which while it may be expected in a sociopath-themed movie, is done in a fresh, creative way. PW recently caught up with Muhammad and Goode to talk about the new movie, available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. Talk a little about how you got into

filmmaking. How did you eventually team up and begin to collaborate on films? Qadir: When I was in elementary school, we had an art class and every two weeks we would do different forms of art, drawing, painting etc. One week, the teacher brought in camcorders and told us to walk around the school for 10 minutes and film whatever you want. I caught the lunch lady digging up her nose on film, and that moment I just fell in love with film. From there, I would take my mom’s camcorder and film random things from comedy skits to random things in the neighborhood. Jasmine: When I was a kid, I fell in love with a TV program “All That,” a kids show and “In living Color.” I knew I wanted to be on TV and do funny things. During high school, I was a class clown and was always in talent shows doing something. I liked being in front of the camera. I wrote stories as well in hopes of filming them one day. Qadir: Me and Jasmine met through social media. I saw on her profile that she was a filmmaker and I contacted her. At the time, I was looking to work with other filmmakers

because filmmaking is a team effort. What made me want to work with Jasmine was she already was doing comedy skits for her show “Philly N Da Building.” Jasmine: After he contacted me, I had to feel him out to make sure he was serious about this craft. After getting to know Qadir and seeing his dedication by releasing a trilogy of films “Bad Guy 1-3,” we formed a partnership. How did you come up with a theme of “sociopath” for your latest project? Qadir: The original plan was for us to make four short horror films and put them together as an anthology. “Socio” was the original name of one of the short films now titled “Hackman.” We asked ourselves how we can tie all of these films together into one theme. Then it just came to us: A guy who wants to kill his co-workers over a missed promotion is a sociopath. A guy running around with a mask fighting crime would be considered a sociopath. The House passed the For The People Act (H.R.1), which is exactly what we need to keep future presidents, congressmen and local offi-

cials on track to work for We The People, not themselves. If we want to continue down the path of regression of politics and have fat cats in office enriching themselves, we are no longer a healthy democracy but an open wallet for corruption. The Senate must take up H.R.1 now. My head and heart (and liver) can’t take much more of this!

Bill threatens drug research House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s Lower Drug Costs Now Act (H.R.3) imposes strict price controls, taxes, and regulations on biopharmaceutical companies. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office expects the measure to reduce the industry’s revenues by $1 trillion over the coming decade. Many H.R. 3 proponents acknowledge this government price-setting will choke off private-sector research funding. But they believe the National Institutes of Health – the federal agency that funds most basic scientific research – could fill the gap left by private researchers. It can’t. The NIH does important work. But it possesses neither the personnel nor the resources to replace private drug companies. And even if the NIH could fill that role, we shouldn’t want it to. Putting the government in charge of drug development would politicize scientific research and prove disastrous for patients. H.R. 3 would gut private-sector innovation. Pharmaceutical firms spend roughly 20 percent of revenues on research and development. So a $1 trillion drop in revenues would result in approximately $200 billion less R&D

spending. House Democrats hope to reroute some of the money the government saves from price controls to the NIH. In theory, the agency could use that funding to pick up the private sector’s slack. In practice, this plan won’t work. The NIH doesn’t try to develop medicines. It focuses almost exclusively on basic research, such as how certain proteins and genes affect people’s health. It’s up to private companies to embark on the arduous and expensive drug development process. It takes more than 10 years and $2 billion to develop one successful drug. “Sixty-seven percent to 97 percent of drug development is conducted by the private sector,” according to recent research from the Tufts University School of Medicine. The NIH simply doesn’t have access to that kind of capital. Even if it were possible, Americans shouldn’t want the government to play a larger role in drug development. Placing a federal agency – whose annual budget varies based on Congress’ whims – in charge would turn scientific discovery into a political circus.

Offshore bans hurt Americans Congressional Democrats just betrayed America’s working class. Late last year, the House passed a series of bills banning offshore energy development, a significant source of employment for blue-collar Americans. Fueled by environmental fervor, these lawmakers are willing to sacrifice opportunities for their most important constituents. That’s enough oil and natural gas to power the United States for over a decade. Ideally, energy companies would lease these underwater lands from the government and extract this bounty. Unfortunately, the Obama administration outlawed energy development in over 90 percent of federal offshore territories. This policy prevents companies from accessing energy riches in the Arctic, Pacific, and Atlantic oceans – as well as the Gulf of Mexico. Soon after taking office, President Trump vowed to lift this ban and revamp offshore energy production. But House Democrats are doing their best to stop him. The bills they passed recently would ban energy development off of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Alaskan coasts. These policies deny working-class Americans prime employment opportunities. Jobs in the offshore sector often don’t require a college degree, are largely immune to outsourcing, and pay an average salary north of $110,000. Even under existing federal constraints, offshore development supports 300,000 jobs. Opening up offshore territory would create 730,000 additional jobs over the next 20 years.

Still, Democrats claim it’s an environmental imperative to ban offshore drilling. Rep. Joe Cunningham, a South Carolina Democrat and lead sponsor of one of the bills, said that offshore drilling would “ruin our vibrant natural resources.” Beto O’Rourke told a crowd that “offshore drilling threatens the local wildlife.” These concerns are entirely unwarranted. Offshore drilling is getting safer by the year. And energy development is tightly regulated to protect the environment. Every rig employs at least one “species observer” who is empowered to stop development if marine animals come too close to operations. If anything, this anti-offshore campaign could damage the environment by choking off funding for a critical federal conservation program. A slice of tax revenue from offshore operations is earmarked for the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which helps finance environmental preservation and national parks. Offshore operations contribute $900 million to this fund every year. If Democrats have their way, that money will vanish. Luckily, these bills won’t get far. The Republican-controlled Senate will never go for such an extreme plan and President Trump has promised to veto any offshore bans that cross his desk. Still, actions speak louder than words. By moving this legislation, House Democrats have shown that they aren’t serious about improving the lives of the working class. If they were, they wouldn’t pursue policies that make it harder for Americans to find good, stable jobs.
