LGBT clergy, representing the new face of faith, speak out on the dangers of systemic spiritual abuse

everend Naomi Washington-Leapheart of Chestnut Hill is a part of a growing movement of inclusive and sex-positive Christian clergy.

Raised “in a Baptist church on the west side of Detroit,” Rev. Washington-Leapheart completed seminary in 2016 and is now an ordained minister, affiliated with the Fellowship of Affirming Ministries.

“I believe that all people, including LGBTQIA people, are made in God’s image and are vital shapers of religious life and community,” says Rev. Washington-Leapheart, a faith work director at the National LGBTQ Task Force with headquarters in Washington D.C., New York City and Miami. Locally, Rev. Washington-Leapheart is an adjunct professor of Theology and Religious Studies at Villanova University. “We should not be merely tolerated or tokenized – our spiritual practice and faith leaders should be taken seriously.”

LGBTQ, FROM PAGE 9 In February, representatives of the United Methodist Church gathered at a special conference in St. Louis to settle the increasingly unsustainable controversy regarding LGBT inclusion.

Many bishops supported a path that they dubbed the “One Church Plan.” It would allow individual congregations and clergy to decide how to approach same-sex marriages and LGBT ordinations. But delegates narrowly voted this down in favor of the so-called Traditional Plan, which affirmed the Church’s opposition to homosexuality.

Since the vote, the division between clergy has only increased. Many progressive Methodist churches are likely to leave the denomination, ignore the vote, or withhold payments as a form of protest. Worldwide, the United Methodist Church has 12 million members.

As the primary Protestant denomination in the United States, this rift could have significant impacts on Christianity overall.

Methodists are not alone in grappling with the inclusion of LGBT people and sexuality in general. Modern Christian churches vary dramatically, not only on allowing samesex weddings and openly gay clergy but in some cases, even having women officiants. A search of what the scripture calls for in certain moments does not bring unanimity.

“The Bible contains many stories about people who were on the margins of their societies but who were specifically called by God and their communities to lead,” says Rev. Washington-Leapheart. “Acts 2:16-18 is [has text referencing] the idea that God’s Spirit will pour out on ALL flesh, which includes Black, Brown, indigenous, poor, queer, trans, undocumented, and disabled flesh.”

She is not the only Philly-area clergy who espouses this interpretation.

Reverend Beverly Dale, ecumenical campus minister at the University of Pennsylvania, says the criteria for membership and leadership in the church have nothing to do with orientation or gender. “[It comes down to] righteous living,” said Rev. Dale, an ordained Christian Church minister. “And, even then, we are not to be the judge to tell others whether or not they are living righteously. God knows the heart. Christians have been sold a bill of goods through centuries of misogynistic, homophobic and erotophobic teachings developed several hundred years after Jesus by elite men who were sexually conflicted.”

She tries to bridge the gap between sexuality and faith in her work; as the host of the YouTube series “Sex is Good” and the co-author of a new book, “Advancing Sexual Health for the Christian Client: Data & Dogma,” aimed at both pastoral counselors and sexual

health professionals.

“Most of the current teachings on sex that are restrictive – in regards to the body, pleasure and women – have nothing to do with Jesus or the gospels, either in his life or his teachings, and, just to be clear, they are scientifically unsupportable,” said Rev. Dale. “Sexual repression and the guilt and body shame [that come along with it] are harmful to sexual self-esteem, relational happiness and sexual fulfillment. The church got off track from its message of living in love when it began obsessing about living in sin.”

For those reared in churches that are historically unwelcoming to openly gay clergy or choose to teach very narrow messages about sexuality, these perspectives can be confounding. For many Americans, it may look like we must choose between spirituality and progressive political values. But that’s not the case, says Reverend David Norse Thomas, who is openly gay and married.

“If you’re part of a religious community, make sure they’re actually affirming,” says Rev. Norse, a former Philly resident, who today is the pastor of Maryland Presbyterian Church in Towson, Maryland. “[There’s a website called] Church Clarity [and it’s] great [for seeing] what your congregation’s views are. You might be surprised.

If you’re an ally, it might be time to think about going somewhere that actually holds your views, or challenges your leadership.”

Are these radical new beliefs? Are these simply new political trends that aim to upend the teachings of Jesus? Not really, says Michael Ruk, an Episcopal priest.

“Jesus speaks very little about sexuality in the New Testament, but he does constantly include and expand the Kingdom of God to the outcast and embraces them,” said Ruk, who leads St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in New Hope. “It’s not one text, but the entirety of Jesus’ life and the ministry which informs this belief. [It’s really all about looking] at the collective understanding [of the] transformative teachings of Jesus.”

Ruk, who is also openly gay, says a third of his congregation is LGBT and that the church takes part in the Pride Parade every year. He goes so far as to apologize on behalf of Christians for their history of sexism, homophobia and the damage it has done.

“Spiritual abuse is unnecessary and very dangerous,” said Ruk, who added, “[But] there are places where you will be loved and supported in your life as a child of God. My tradition and others, want to see an inclusive and affirming understanding of the whole person.

I would encourage those in faith communities which do not support your life to find one that does.”

J

amaaladeen Tacuma prides himself on being one of the most consistently visible members of Philadelphia’s avant-garde.

The jazz-funk bassist has also excelled as a composer, entrepreneur and is a mainstay in the designer and fashion scene. Last year, his excellence in music gifted him the City of Philadelphia’s Benny Golson Award from the Mayor. Despite being known as one of the preeminent musicians to rock an electric bass, the four-stringed king showed he’s got chops on the upright, despite renouncing the instrument as part of his repertoire years ago.

Arriving by way of North Philadelphia, Tacuma has made a home for himself in Southwest, his studio workspace in the Redd Carpet Room resides where few dare tread. His next act is the fifth iteration of his multi-week Outsiders Improvised & Creative Music Festival beginning April 14. Before the event, Tacuma checked in with PW to chat music, his role in it and living in an ever-changing Philadelphia.

TACUMA, FROM PAGE 13 You live and work in Southwest Philly, but, you’re from North Philly. What do you find appealing about life on the other side of the city from where you grew up?

I got married early on, and was living in the Cheltenham area, and wanted to buy a house rather than rent. Southwest Philadelphia prices were right. Having learned from the mistakes that black and white artists had made in the past – not taking their money and investing in something with longevity – I bought this house, cash, right after I got off tour.

What’s cool about the Southwest’s vibe and your place in it?

This house, the area, has been inspirational – as my children have become artists and entrepreneurs themselves. When I got here, there were the remnants of [when this area was a predominantly] white neighborhood, without many black folks. The black friends I have who attended Bartram High said that long ago, it was difficult for them to navigate their way through the neighborhood as there were race problems. I’ve witnessed though, from the time I got here, [almost] 15+ years ago to now, a change: people getting along, people coming from Africa.

Would you say it’s become even more of an international area, despite the development and subsequent gentrification arriving from universities like Drexel and the University of Pennsylvania drifting more into the neighborhood?

Considering all that you just said and all that you have been and done, how has that changed who you are as a player and now as a presenter for your upcoming Outsiders Fest?

All of [those experiences] made me who I am today. I’m able to know about all things creative, beautiful and upgrading in human excellence. Because I was able to navigate all of these various worlds, I got to know all of its people. I think [that resonates with] the [musicians] I have had for past festivals, and those coming through Philly, starting this weekend.

Yes. If I needed African material, artifacts and accessories in the past, I had to go to New York. Now, all I have to do is go to Woodland Avenue. Everything is there – restaurants, material stores. I ran into an African band rehearsing and invited myself into the room.

That’s making me want to do a record with African influence, especially since I was in Senegal, and recorded with drummers from Gorai Island. I’ll fuse all those tracks.

From one developer’s point of view, such changes won’t do much to encourage preservation, especially when compared with historic tax credits from federal or state governments.

“Are they helpful? Yes,” said Eric Blumenfeld, developer of the Divine Lorraine Hotel, a historic apartment building on North Broad Street, and the recently reopened Metropolitan Opera House a few blocks away. “But I don’t see them as dramatic enough to change the tide.”

What’s really needed, Blumenfeld said, is the restoration of the federal historic tax credit that was cut by the Trump tax reforms, and for Pennsylvania to beef up its own tax credit which Blumenfeld said is too small to significantly increase preservation.

But Carl Dranoff, developer of historic properties including Locust on the Park in the Fitler Square neighborhood, and the Packard Building on Broad Street, said the “carrots” that would be offered to developers under the city’s plan are likely to spur them to preserve more buildings.

“I think we have a blueprint that we didn’t have before, and it was very thoughtfully balanced,” Dranoff said. “The whole thrust of it is, ‘Let’s not make preservation a burden so that it reduces the value of properties. Let’s make it an incentive so that you can preserve the properties and make them financially feasible.’”

The initiatives follow the recommendations of the Philadelphia Historic Preservation Task Force, a panel whose 33 members included developers, preservationists, architects and community members, set up by Mayor Kenney in April 2017.

Although Philadelphia has the second-most pre-1945 buildings of any American city, only

2.2 percent of them are protected by local historic designation, about half the national rate, according to the Task Force.

Among the historic buildings that now have a better chance of surviving is the Esslinger Brewery at the intersection of Ridge Avenue and 10th and Callowhill Streets just north of Chinatown.

The jumble of red-brick buildings have made beer and soap at various times since the 1860s and are now occupied by a manufacturer of janitorial supplies.

The buildings may not win any awards for architectural flair or curb appeal, but they are worth preserving, advocates say, because they may represent the city’s longest continuous industrial occupancy in one building, and because the brewery was one of the few to survive prohibition in Philadelphia.

In May 2018, the building was added to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places, which requires the City Historical Commission to approve any plan to demolish a historic site, and sets high standards for any developer seeking to justify a plan to take a building down.

But it was too late for the Society Hill Playhouse, a fixture on the city’s theater scene from 1959 until it was demolished in 2016 to make way for a new apartment building on South 8th Street.

The same goes for the Christian Street Baptist Church that was built in 1890 and demolished in July 2018.

Such losses are helping to drive the new initiative, along with the recognition that Philadelphia’s history sets it apart from many other cities, Steinke said.

“This is a 300-year-old city with architectural history and legacy second to none,” he said.

“We have something really special here in Philadelphia that’s worth understanding and worth protecting.”

PHILADELPHIAWEEKLY.COM @PHILLYWEEKLY Here’s what I learned about Noel early on: He was born on Nov. 20, 1973. He grew up in North Philadelphia in one, if not the only, Puerto Rican families in a mostly black neighborhood, “in the heart of the ghetto, in the Badlands,” Noel wrote. Neighborhood kids gave him a hard time because he didn’t look the way they did, talk the way they did, eat the same things their families did.

“I used to go fightin’ to school and fightin’ coming back from school just because of my nationality,” Noel recalled.

He also learned to do battle in a family of 13 – 11 brothers and two sisters – all from the same mother but from two different fathers: Ramos vs. Berrios. “For some reason, it was like a competition between us,” Noel wrote in one of his first letters to me. The two factions vied with each other for superiority, often physically, and no one intervened.

Now, Noel says, he’s in touch with just seven of his siblings.

One of them died of AIDS. Another one was shot seven times during a dice game. Miraculously, he survived.

Then one day when he got upset with some dealers on his stoop, someone shot him once, and he died, Noel said matter-of-factly. “I think it was all a set-up.”

Noel has lived most of his life behind locked doors and cells. Starting in juvenile detention around age 15, he explained that he’s been locked up on and off ever since, primarily on drug-related charges. From a young age, Noel saw the drug dealers’ flashy cars and wanted that kind of money, so he began small-time corner dealing. Later, he said he joined the Latin Kings.

In addition to incarceration, Noel mentioned he also started using pretty heavily early on. “I’m a weed junkie,” he told me, though he also prefers crack, snorts heroin and does speedballs, a combination of heroin and cocaine, whenever he gets a chance.

“I’ve been in and out of prison and drug addicted for over 20 years,” Noel wrote. “You’re probably saying that I should’ve learned my lesson by now, and I did. It’s sad to say that it took this long for me to realize it.”

He said he knew that I would wonder why this time it would be different. “I’m tired of running, tired of the same thing, tired of being a disappointment [sic] to others, seeing the hurt in people’s eyes when I end up in jail or running the streets getting high. It’s true what they say: you do become a product of your environment, and that’s what I’ve become. I want to change. I want to give me [sic] a chance to live a life I know I can have.”

The problem in part has been a lack of a support system, Noel said. Growing up, his father was an alcoholic, and his siblings were always fighting. Noel loved his mother dearly and referred to her as the “glue” of the family.

He said when his mother was alive, she always visited him and made sure he had money in his commissary for toiletries and extra provisions when he was incarcerated. She brought

PEOPLE everyone in his family together, got them to laugh and eat and have a good time. When she was alive, he knew someone was there. But when she died, he was desolate—more alone than he had been in his entire life.

Noel has never recovered from the fact that he was upstate in prison when his mother died from complications from diabetes. He said the prison system wanted to charge him $1,800 to travel to his mother’s funeral. Of course, he didn’t have the money. Noel has never forgiven his extended family, including his father, for failing to come up with, or even try to produce, the funds to get him there. If everyone had just pitched in a little bit, it would’ve been so easy, Noel said one day during one of our phone conversations. I could hear the pain, the bitterness in his voice. This neglect seemed like an ulcer that had been plaguing him for years.

In an early letter, Noel told me that he always had dreams of becoming a fireman or a police officer. “But as a kid, I always felt [like] a coward. [I] still think I am, and I always hated myself for that,” Noel wrote. “My life was, and still is, very, very hard. I carry a lot of pain and suffering and battle [with] myself on a daily basis.”

When he watched sitcoms the likes of “Silver Spoons” or “Different Strokes” or “Family Matters,” Noel asked himself why his life couldn’t mimic one of these TV lives with family and friends like that. “[I was] “always made fun of, always the butt end of everybody’s jokes,” Noel wrote.

“Even family would berate me. I always ask myself and God [sic] why my life is like this.

What did I do to deserve this? Will I be able to overcome such pain, and heartache, and disappointment? Will I ever be able to live life on life’s terms?”

Noel recalled an incident in the park when he and a younger brother were playing and a couple of neighborhood bullies sidled up to torment them. Noel didn’t run, but he also didn’t fight back. He even considered taking up the guys’ offer to hold his little brother’s arms behind his back so they could punch him a few times. Then they would let Noel and his brother go. “Thank God he didn’t go through with that, and my brother had more heart than I did. But what that did to my mental and emotional state—it destroyed me. It hurt me to the very core of my soul to think that I was going to let someone hurt my brother just so I won’t [sic] get hurt … that still bothers me to this day.”

By this point in our correspondence and in some intermittent phone calls, Noel began to call me his “Angel,” because I listened and didn’t judge, and because he started to feel comfortable telling me things he had been holding inside so long. “It was a blessing and an honor to have gotten to know you and has really put a new lease on life for me,” Noel wrote. “You have opened my eyes and heart

by Noel’s eloquence, I was beginning to feel uncomfortable with the role I was taking on for him, which seemed at times like that of a psychiatrist or a priest; so I would remind Noel that I was just a journalist interested in his story – interested in what his experience revealed about the very American issue of the revolving door between drug and mental health treatment centers, the street, and incarceration. But, of course, inevitably, I was also becoming a friend and cared about Noel and his well being – especially after what he disclosed next.

I knew there was more to Noel’s history of trauma than being the only Puerto Rican family in a black neighborhood and the bullying from the outside and the fighting within the family, including the beatings his drunk father used to administer with a belt.

Eventually, Noel told me that he was sexually abused for many years as a child by the son of a local priest. No one in his family acknowledged it or stopped it when Noel explained what was going on—or even believed him for that matter, he said.

Then Noel wrote to me obliquely and movingly about the abuse, saying, “The mind shuts down. That kid can never be a kid again, and what is being done, it’s being done repeatedly, and the child [in him died little by little] every time it’s being done.” Noel also said that this “child is no longer beautiful but ugly in the mind, and to be loved is a scary thing.”

In fact, he or she feels that they can never be loved again.

“They say that time heals all wounds, and that may be true. But what happens when you feel that there isn’t enough time or think that this wound will never heal?” Noel says. “The festering of this wound soon becomes gangreenish, the poison begins to flow, and the only way to stop the poison is to cut off the root of it – but the root is you, so what could be the only option? Suicide comes into play, and that is the only way to get rid of the poison because it’s already in the bloodstream.”

In a decision to turn to drugs and gang life, Noel said, “In [that my] mind is broken, the streets showed love, the streets showed loyalty, [or] so [they] thought. How can a human recover from a scar that will always be a remind-

Hearing about this sexual abuse traumatized me vicariously. I never felt judgmental of Noel or critical of his choices, but rather I saw him as a product of his environment and of a childhood full of cruel and unusual punishment – one rife with abuse of the type no person, much less a child, should ever have to experience, although legions suffer through it on a regular basis, leading to mental illness, addiction, crime and often incarceration instead of treatment.

But though my heart tore into bits for Noel, I felt it was necessary to re-draw some boundaries at this point. For one thing, I told him, he had to stop calling me his “angel.” I was just a flawed human being like anybody else, and though I cared about him and what was to become of his life, I was primarily a journalist wanting to follow his story to the extent that he was willing to let me.

So Noel, knowing my penchant for tattoos and piercings, started calling me “gangster rat” instead. “How are you, gangster rat?” Noel would greet me each time he called.

And he started calling more often.

I didn’t mind at first and was eager to learn more and take ongoing notes about Noel’s life. But I did keep having to fill up his Global Tel Link account, since nobody else was, and we had started running through the funds more quickly. When I found out Noel was a reader but lacked material in jail, I sent him some fantasy books, his genre of choice. A couple of times, I even put money into his commissary so he could buy decent soap and deodorant, which apparently you have to pay for in jail. Plus, the food is shit, and Noel needed soups and snacks.

All of this led me to wrestle with my motives, to peer at my relationship with Noel with a keener eye. Was I becoming merely a friend? Was Noel manipulating and using me?

Was he falling in love with me because I was the only one there for him on a regular basis? Was I crossing some invisible journalistic boundary? And if so, did it really matter?
