We receive some pretty weird shit through all forms of mail, but this handwritten letter we got last week kind of creeped us out. It’s full of ramblings and plays on the names of politicians but what’s also weird are the sheer number of SS symbols used throughout to emphasize, well, we’re not sure exactly what, really. Normally, you find it hard to give the ramblings of a person with obviously too much time on their hands the time of day, but we wanted to share just how crazy the minds of some people truly are. Drivers, stay far, far away from... South Broad Street on May 4. The Philly POPS have the street from Spruce to Pine blocked off as they try to break a Guinness World Record of the most people dancing the “Twist.” We’re not kidding, this is actually scheduled to happen. It’s in celebration of the final show of the season for the Philly POPS who are commemorating the years the American Bandstand in Philadelphia. It’s cheesy, but it has history, so we’ll allow it. Just make sure you give us props for directing you around the madness and not Waze.

We’re calling this one “separation of church and script.” According to a report over at Technical.ly, last Thursday during a meetup for Philadelphia-area Java developers at Guru in Center City, Melody Starling, a web developer and designer was giving a presentation on how to create hip-hop beats with JavaScript. Starling, who identifies as trans apparently made fellow developer in Phoenixville resident Scott O’Connor feel some type of way. O’Connor sent a scathing email to organizers lambasting them for allowing an “abomination of God” (see Starling) the floor to speak. We should mention in typical coward fashion, O’Connor sent his gripe via email and has since deactivated his account and has shut down any links to him or being apart of the group. lmost two decades ago, in every urban locale across America, you could find them everywhere. They were hard to miss, and you could usually score one for about five bucks. Today, hip-hop mixtapes havenâ€™t disappeared completely, but their presence is certainly not the same. The underground mixtape scene comprised a multi-million dollar industry at its peak. Often, mixtapes featured exclusive pirated content, much to the chagrin of record labels.

DID YOU KNOW As a result, law enforcement and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) cracked down on the business more than a decade ago, its stronghold on hip-hop has lost its grip. DJ Drama, a native Philadelphian famously known for his “Gangsta Grillz” mixtape series, built his empire in Atlanta and bore the brunt of the mixtape crackdown in 2007 when federal agents raided his studio and seized more than 50,000 mixtapes, according to reports. Technology has also played a part in the industry’s demise. New releases from indie artists and superstars are posted on the internet and streaming services like Apple Music, Spotify and Tidal. During their heyday in the early 2000s, mixtapes could be purchased nearly anywhere in America. These featured new music and freestyles from both well-known and up-and-coming emcees, sometimes all on the same project. Legendary New York DJs like DJ Clue, Funkmaster Flex and Kay Slay, among many others, would religiously drop new projects, which were then circulated and sold on the streets. Philly, a major hip-hop hub, also carved its own legacy during this era. Homegrown rap group Major Figgas dropped a string of mixtapes in the late 1990s, which garnered them a buzz and led to them being signed by Philadelphia-based RuffNation Records, which later led to a distribution deal with Warner Bros. By the early 2000s, underground rappers like Reed Dollaz, Joey Jihad, D. Jones and Meek Mill built their reputation via freestyles on the internet and DVDs, and these freestyles were then placed on mixtapes. Thanks to his mixtape releases, Meek Mill achieved mainstream success. Jay-Z’s Phillybased rap collective State Property, who had already achieved major-label success, churned out exclusive releases and freestyles on mixtapes while their major-label releases were also being sold. As in New York, Philly DJs curated most of this music and built a name for themselves from these mixes. DJ Wyse Schmeek and hiphop were both born in the Bronx. He first got started in his craft thanks to legendary DJs Chubby Chubb and Brucie B in the 1980s. During this time, Chubb and B distributed their mixes on cassette tapes for promotion.

Meek Mill achieved mainstream success through his mixtape release. Jay-Z’s Philly-based rap collective State Property, who had already achieved major-label success, churned out exclusive releases and freestyles on mixtapes while their major-label releases were also being sold.

“I’ve been around music all my life,” Wyse Schmeek told Philadelphia Weekly. “I started DJing between 14 and 16 years old, and mixtapes were a way of life for me.” After his mom got a job offer, his family packed up and moved to Delaware, where Wyse Schmeek continued rapping and DJing at parties. He soon came to dominate that market, then edged up I-95 north into Chester and Philadelphia and continued distributing his mixtapes with exclusive music and freestyles. Shortly thereafter, he developed a relationship with State Property and began releasing regular mixtapes with the group, further raising his profile in Philly. “The best memories for me [during that time] was the grind and getting out there and meeting people and the store owners that pushed the music,” he said. “[I remember] building relationships that I still have to this day because it was face-to-face and not internet-based…and dropping a CD that everybody had to have because there was no other place to get it.” SEE MIXTAPE, PAGE 9

MIXTAPE, FROM PAGE 7 Digital versions of Wyse Schmeek’s new releases and classic mixtapes can still be found on websites like Datpiff, Live Mixtapes and Audiomack. But as streaming services have become one of the primary places to obtain new music, the aforementioned sites are struggling to stay afloat. Leaving the question: What will happen to the music hosted their if these sites go under? Drake’s breakout 2008 mixtape “So Far Gone” was distributed on streaming services this past February, marking a major footnote in the continuing story of music accessibility. Additionally, other artists like Wiz Khalifa, 50 Cent and Lil Wayne have seen their classic tapes move over to streaming platforms. Yet many original mixtapes from some of the biggest names in hip-hop remain stuck in their current spots on Datpiff or on physical copies due to the various copyright issues that would have to be resolved. Amir Lipscomb, widely known in Philly and abroad as DJ Amir, believes that the legacy of the mixtape era will always be preserved in some capacity. “You always are going to have the haves and the have-nots,” he told PW. “Everybody can’t go to iTunes. [There’s] some of the hottest talent out there in Philadelphia [who don’t] have music on iTunes. They just got YouTube and DatPiff. It’s always that person that loves the culture. They gone keep that vault tight.” After learning how to DJ at a young age, Lipscomb spun at cookouts and school functions before he could even drive to them. He became the protégé of DJ Touch Tone, a popular radio DJ who appeared on Philly’s 103.9FM. From there, he started appearing on the station at just 13 years old. Soon, Lipscomb found success through DJing across the city at parties, [Sneaker] Villa and at the former Gallery. Around that time, he started putting together and releasing mixtapes. From there, Lipscomb took off and gleaned partnerships with numerous rappers from the city and beyond. His first mixtape was with State Property’s Young Chris. Called “Campaign for Change,” the project coincided with former President Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. Lipscomb has since worked with Meek Mill, Cyssero and Joey Jihad, among many other artists. Today, you can find Lipscomb mixing on the radio. He recently appeared as a guest DJ on Sway in the Morning on Sirius XM. He also still drops mixtapes, but he’s adamant about staying current.

“It’s just a whole different level,” he said. “I just put together a whole album with 40 Philadelphia artists. We doing tapes and we doing streams.” To cater to as wide an audience as possible, Lipscomb said that he also physically sells his CDs on the streets and borrows a strategy from the late rapper Nipsey Hussle, who famously pushed his 2013 “Crenshaw” mixtape by offering it to fans for free in addition to selling it for $100. “I give the option,” he said. “That’s the formula that we all do. I got a mixtape with the most recent songs on it called the radio killer mix and you can give me a dollar or you can take it for free. “I also go to colleges,” he added. “That’s a marketing thing for me. I just post up, blast the music and give CD’s out. I know that it’s new kids coming along that don’t have Camaros. Some kids got that old car with the [CD] players still. I always make sure I cater to that [demographic as well] because I’m for the people.”

Press pause Mayor promises Kensington residents better cooperation in placement of Safehouse site following neighborhood uproar BY COURTENAY HARRIS BOND

eighbors living near Kensington and Allegheny avenues, one of the most notorious drug corners in the city, canceled a planned protest against supervised injection facilities on April 19. It arrived only after a meeting with Mayor Jim Kenney during which he assured residents they would be part of the conversation moving forward and that nothing was happening quickly. Former Gov. Ed Rendell revealed last month that a developer had offered a location in Kensington to be utilized by Safehouse. The Philadelphia nonprofit is dedicated to harm reduction and to opening supervised injection facilities where people would receive wraparound medical care, overdose reversals and links to rehab. Vehement resident opposition broke out against opening this site in a building on Hilton Street, near Kensington and Allegheny avenues. The Harrowgate Neighborhood Association, which encompasses that area, planned a protest against all supervised injection facilities for Friday and circulated a petition against them that garnered over 500 signatures to deliver to Kenney.

LOWDOWN... A group known as Safehouse planned to open the nation’s first safe injection site in the Harrowgate section of Kensington. However, following a shutdown of the idea and a planned protest from neighbors, Mayor Jim Kenney has vowed to work with residents to ensure the placement doesn’t upset the status quo. The mayor met with Harrowgate President Shannon Farrell-Pakstis and issued a public statement just two days later, putting the brakes on overdose prevention sites (OPS). Although he recognized that the city was still in the grip of an opioid crisis, with more than 1,100 drug overdose deaths last year, he noted that his decision was due to safety reasons. “Valid public safety concerns have been raised by the community in and around Kensington, and I have informed Safehouse that those safety concerns must be addressed before the establishment of an OPS,” Kenney wrote and also urged Safehouse to consider other sites while the city “tackles public safety” and works with the community to help them understand why overdose prevention sites are needed. “I wouldn’t call it appeasement,” City Managing Director Brian Abernathy told PW. “I think residents have raised some valid concerns about public safety, about how the police will interact with the site. There has not been as robust a public dialogue as we would like. “We are still committed to a site in Kensington,” Abernathy added. But he emphasized, as did Kenney in his statement, that multiple sites around the city were needed. Abernathy also said that the way the announcement came out about the possible Safehouse site “put everybody back on their heels.” Farrell-Pakstis said that she and her neighbors don’t want to be in a situation where they have “to choose between safe injection sites and drug users dying and our children...but it is a very violent environment here, a very vicious cycle we’re living in.” Neighbors worry that opening a supervised injection facility would increase drug dealing, violence and crime in an area already hard hit by the effects of the opioid crisis. Farrell-Pakstis, for instance, has had just about everything stolen from her yard, including her grill, a table, pieces of her pool and toys belonging to her two children with special needs. She cannot afford to move out of Kensington because she can barely pay for the services her children need – but perhaps more importantly, nor does she feel she should have to move. But Farrell-Pakstis canceled the protest because she felt encouraged by the meeting with Mayor Kenney. “I felt pretty good that this wouldn’t be on Hilton Street,” she said. Since she doesn’t think an overdose pre-

vention site is going to pop up overnight, Farrell-Pakstis decided not to exhaust her association’s resources and energy with the planned April 19 protest when they might have to raise an outcry more vigorously down the road, she said. However, not all Harrowgate neighbors were happy with the decision to cancel. “Don’t let your guard down,” wrote resident William Reed on the Harrowgate Facebook group page. “This letter is not a good thing,” wrote resident Joseph McCook. “The OPS should be fought wherever they try to open it.” “Let’s take a breath, and we will continue pushing forward with our lawyer and supporting U.S. Attorney [William] McSwain,” Farrell-Pakstis wrote back. U.S. Attorney McSwain has sued Safehouse, asking a federal court to declare the supervised injection facilities illegal. Safehouse filed a response to the civil lawsuit earlier this month, saying that such sites are legal and save lives. Safehouse President Jose Benitez, who is also executive director of Prevention Point Philadelphia, and Safehouse Vice President Ronda Goldfein, executive director of the Aids Law Project of Pennsylvania, have also assured the public that no specific sites have been settled on and that more public conversation is needed. “At a minimum, there are certain things that have to happen before any site can happen,” Goldfein said in an interview before Kenney issued his statement, citing fundraising and further community meetings as necessities. “Wherever the site is going to be is going to require ongoing conversation.” Abernathy emphasized that the mayor was also committed to further dialogue with community members. “We have worked very hard in Kensington, expending human capital and monetary resources,” he said. “We need to maintain that relationship with the community.” Abernathy also said that the mayor was not backing down from his support of overdose prevention sites. “We are committed to this concept and to a site in Kensington, and we’re also going to make this a national model,” he said. “We’re not just going to slap this together.”

oor Mother is Afrofuturism at its best. She can be viewed through the lens of her hardcore poetry with books such as “Fetish Bones,” or through her protest music with albums such as “The Motionless Present.” Notable even still is Moor Mother’s (who was born with the name Camae Ayewa) activist work fighting gentrification in North Philly and the subjugation of women worldwide. Having this dynamic, local, experimental solo artist join the ranks of the Art Ensemble of Chicago is akin to Childish Gambino joining Public Enemy – one young legend of bomb-dropping expressionism joining the ones that came before. That’s what happens this week with the Art Ensemble’s new album, “We Are on the Edge.” The work is a celebration of the group’s 50th anniversary, its “ancient to the future” motto and its ancestral roots, and its legacy will now include Moor Mother’s words and vocals.

“The interconnectedness of these musicians is inspiring,” said Ars Nova Workshop CEO Mark Christman, whose inaugural “October Revolution” festival presented both artists as its bookends. “They meet, come together, create, move on and loop back around to meet again.” Along with touring with the Art Ensemble and its reeds man, Roscoe Mitchell, Moor Mother is preparing for an exhibition at the Center for Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA) in May. In June, she’ll unveil her first theatrical presentation, a choreographed poem called “Circuit City,” June 20-23 for FringeArts. Why did you decide to become Moor Mother, rather than use your real name for your music? I needed a new name for solo art projects and came up with Moor Mother to honor mothers, and to honor blackness before racial classifications as we know them now, before the 1700s. The name does not represent a persona. Is there, however, something that Moor Mother can do that Camae can’t or won’t? Camae is more based on my literary work when I’m releasing books or writing for publications. I want to keep Moor Mother for sound-based projects. Would you say that your poetry is more dedicated to activism than your activism is dedicated to poetry? I think the poetry wins out. Everything that you write about – the underrepresented, the non-included, systemic racism – are these topics that you must include and infuse through all your work for it to feel whole? Is it an organic part of your writing process that these things come into play or do you conjure them? I just write and hope that all of those things fall into the boxes they need to fall into. Is Philadelphia more of a character in your lyrics or a dynamic backdrop? I think the friends I’ve been able to make

here, the fact this city is not so big a music city, that it’s filled with go-getters when you put the proper fire under them – like me – that’s the backdrop. Alice Coltrane, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Betty Carter – these are your biggest inspirations, yes? How do you carry on the music and traditions of your foremothers in a way that is radically different from anything they have done or said? I don’t know if it’s so radically different. I know because when I tour, internationally, people from that older generation give me respect, and that I represent that level of freeness. I just happened to come up in punk and never studied the music, so it gives me a raw edge. I’m more carrying on the tradition than reinventing the wheel. Mitchell is a quietly intense, intelligent and passionate man when it comes to sound. What was your initial conversation? I was just respectful. When he told me he thought my set was good, I was like ‘woah.’ I gave him my poetry book and gave him my address, and he made up a package of his CDs and sent them to me. We stayed in contact, and when I was in London, he asked me about getting involved with this record he was making with the Art Ensemble. He said he wanted me for one specific track and that I could freestyle over another one. After he sent me some tracks, I was all over that. SEE MOOR, PAGE 15

MOOR, FROM PAGE 13 Can you give me a picture of recording “We’re on the Edge” with them? How did it come together in your head? I was so busy between a residency and a tour that I didn’t really have a chance to work on it until I was in the studio with them. Soon as I heard it I [started] getting emotional. If all that connects when you just listen to something, it’s easy for me. Improv poetry. I was nervous as the whole band was there in the studio, but I did the poem once – I tend to write poetry with space so that I can add stuff between the words. The reason why I like Alice Coltrane is because of her story, her struggle and perseverance. Being interested in that, I could tap into what the Art Ensemble has been through for 50 years. That’s what makes me good as a poet, that I could feel. Here they are, celebrating 50 years together, and with you. Were you, like me, all about the AACM and all things Art Ensemble growing up? I really knew more about Mitchell and his solo recordings than I did the music of the whole band. Once I played a show with him, I started diving in. I had the Art Ensemble’s ‘Fanfare for the Warriors’ record on my phone, and couldn’t get it off, but also had all of Mitchell’s solo stuff there too. It’s opened my eyes to so much more. Are you now part of the Art Ensemble’s extended family, one whose lineage includes the late great Lester Bowie and Don Moye? At first, I was like ‘Hey, am I in the band?’ I’m too shy, though, to say it out loud. I’m just taking this ride, you know. Now, I’m doing all these shows with them, and with Roscoe solo, I am part of the family. They’re so cool, they’re like uncles. They’re including me without saying such. What can you say about this Circuit City musical you have coming to FringeArts? They call it a choreo-poem. It’s a free jazz musical. I mean, yeah, the only reason I ever want to write plays, period, is because of Nztoake Shange, Amiri Baraka and Sonia Sanchez. They were artists and poets before they were playwrights. Through their poetry, I found their plays. I wasn’t writing my poetry and then just one day go ‘oh, this cool’ and decided to add a play in there. FringeArts found out I was writing one, and they asked me to put it on. Having interviewed all three, I can state that they thought of themselves as poets first. In your play, are there roles beyond your own? Not really. It’s all me. It’s all my feelings. If you listen to my band Irresistible Entanglements or any of my albums, you’ll recognize

my themes. In the play, they’re living in affordable housing. I’ve always rapped about affordable housing. It reminds me of doing these durations that I perform, some of which are 14 hours long. You’re pushing yourself a little bit farther each time. It’s a lot of work, these plays. I think you’re being modest. What did Art Ensemble of Chicago’s Roscoe Mitchell – someone of that generation – know or think of your music when you met? We met in Latvia at an experimental jazz festival. His niece told him about me, and when I asked if he would be so kind as to come to my set, he said he had already planned to. Is the music from the play your next album? I have one new album coming out this autumn and I’m recording this show – part improv, all electronic music – and it will be another new album. Musically and in regards to your instrumentation and arrangements, your stuff is as ‘ancient to the future’ as the Art Ensemble motto goes. It’s electro-modern primitivism? Do you feel a piece with that? Is the music coming through your head at the same time as the words? The words lead it. I didn’t realize that they did so, so much, until I went back into the studio with Irreversible Entanglements. It wasn’t easy at first until I lead with the words. Suddenly it fell into place. The band keeps telling me that yes, I’m a poet, but that I’m also a horn player. I’m speaking, and it’s my voice, but it’s an instrument that can be so many instruments. Betty Carter taught me that. How Roscoe Mitchell plays teaches me that. He can play the most beautiful line, then turn around, and play the most challenging thing that you have to work to get on. Every time I play with the Art Ensemble, I get smarter. It’s about taking yourself further with unknown sounds. I don’t’ know what’s coming next, but if I stay within the feeling, I’ll be all right. It’s good to know I can keep pushing farther.

Whether as a solo artist or with Art Ensemble, you’re using hardware made and maintained by yourself. How do you use technology to its fullest? I have my own thing. I call it ‘liberation technology.’ To me, that’s like Alice Coltrane playing the sitar. Yeah, she’s playing an instrument everyone knows, but she’s playing it in a way unlike anyone else. In my music, I always have blues, gospel and jazz, as they are massive in moving minds and hearts. It’s a technology that frees and inspires people. It frees me.

Chasing time After taking tiny bites in the studio, Snow Patrol ready to rock after seven-year hiatus BY ALEX NAGY

hen Snow Patrol headlines the Tower Theater on April 27, the stop will be one of many on an international tour in celebration of their 2018 album, “Wildness.” It’ll be their first album in seven years. The rock band from Dundee, Scotland is probably most known in the States for their 2006 hit “Chasing Cars,” but the band has an extensive discography and history. They don’t look old, but that’s in large part to the many iterations of bandmates since the group formed in 1994. Lead singer Gary Lightbody is the only member left from the original formation which consists of Paul Wilson (bass), Jonny Quinn (drums), Johnny McDaid (guitar/piano) and Nathan Connolly (lead guitar). The latter in Connolly sat down with Philadelphia Weekly to talk about touring, the new album, why it’s been so long since the previous one and doing all of this in it for the long haul. great record. Obviously, your last one should always be your best. After a certain length of time, we weren’t ready until we believed it was as perfect as it could be. Hopefully, the next one won’t take that length of time. It was just our story at that time. Personally, I always knew we would finish it. It was never a question of ‘if,’ but always a question of ‘when,’ but I had always believed we would get there.

What would you say inspired the creation and release of “Wildness” after seven years of not releasing an album? Well, it certainly wasn’t intentional to do that. We decided at the time that we’d take a little time off. We had been touring solidly for longer than 10 years, but certainly very intensely from ‘Final Straw’ [the band’s third studio album from 2003] and we’d been on the road before that as well. Within that time, things happened, life happened, [and I think] Gary has certainly been vocal about his experiences. The things he was going through that he was bravely talking about – things like depression and alcoholism – some of that came up in the time off. Obviously, any kind of health — mental health, physical health — is more important. There was a lot of struggles within our time, and that has certainly made its way into this record.

In that aspect, what you are most proud of regarding the band’s overall success? I think the longevity we’ve had. Gary started the band 25 years ago in its original form in [college]. There are lots of obviously great moments, shows and special occasions. The first time we supported U2 [on tour] was a big thing for us. All those kinds of moments — records going to No. 1 in certain places, all those things, of course, are amazing. But I think actually at this point it’s the fact that we’re still sticking with it, still doing it, still getting to tour. Especially after taking six years off the road, seven years since we’ve released a record. There are no guarantees, and that’s what I’m most proud of at the minute. We’re a career band and as I said, there was a little break, but we came away from that stronger than ever and we’re going to continue making records until we decide we’re not going to,

How did that play into the music in this album? It’s certainly not a dark record by any means. It’s a hopeful and joyful record. Over a few years, we were dipping in and out trying to make this record. I think the longer you leave it, the more pressure there is to make a

You’re doing it on your own terms, and you’ve been very successful doing so, which is amazing. There have been times where there was no success, so we’ve been fortunate to get there. That’s certainly not wasted on us. But longevity, as I said, is something that doesn’t happen to everyone in the music industry. There’s plenty that it does, but I don’t think you can take it as a given. I think it comes from being passionate, focused, honest as well. Honest with each other, which is something that as time has gone on being together, we have learned. We’re not teenagers or in our 20s anymore, so there are lots of responsibilities that come with that with each other and the people you work with. Those could be some of the tougher battles internally, and again, we seem to have come through those as well. Have you ever played in Philly before? Yeah, we have. We’ve played quite a few times. Not in quite a few years, properly. We took a little while to make our record. We were there when we went on our first U.S. tour in six years, I think last year with Ed Sheeran. So, yeah, it’s been a little while since we’ve been there but we’re looking forward to get-

ting back. We’ve always had some great shows there, connected well and it’s always been a great place on the tour. It was great being out there last year, but we’re definitely looking forward to getting back there and doing our own show. What would you say you love most about playing in Philly? I think the crowd reactions, the audience. We’re very fortunate that we have a solid fan base in the states and we’ve always had a great kind of rapport with the crowd there. They’ve all responded well. There’s some cities—without dismissing [them]—that have kind of been with us from the start early on when we first started touring the states, Philadelphia being one of them. So there’s always been a connection there. Do you know anything about the alternative music scene in Philly? Not as much as I would like. If there’s stuff to check out or music that we should, we’ll take any advice, any tips. We’re music lovers, obviously, and are always on the lookout for new stuff. Is there anyone I should check out right now? All advice is welcome. Yeah, I know a bunch of friends here who are in bands that are students or just graduated from college and are playing a bunch of shows. I think Philly has a great alternative, underground music scene. Is there certain venues, for example, that are kinda the main places to go to where there’s sort of alternative stuff going on on a regular basis? There’s Kung Fu Necktie, they have some smaller things and it’s really alternative there. Theatre of the Living Arts—they have some pretty big things there too, but also great alternative stuff. Hopefully, we’ll get a chance to check it out. Not every time we get to stay in the city, but we generally do. We always have tried to get out and sometimes check out local music as well. We’re people that like to go out and see and hear for sure.

Do you guys have any special traditions that you do on tour, like anything that’s fun and unique? We’ve been in the band for a long time and we’ve toured for a long time, so we’ve had all sorts of rituals over the years— nothing weird. But usually where our tour gets defined is by a couple of records that we start listening to at the start of our album, then they become our kind of prestage ritual. We listen to those couple of records and get ourselves psyched up. During this album, we discovered a band called Gang of Youths, an Australian band, while we were down there—the first promo tour we did with this record was in Australia— and they’ve kind of been the soundtrack to the tour. It’s kind of weird if I hear it anywhere else. I feel like I’m supposed to be going on stage. It’s all those things like that related to music that kind of accompany us wherever we go.

That’s awesome. Music can hold so many memories like that and just transport you back to that place. Exactly. It’s similar to how we’ve listened to music, and the landscape has changed, obviously, but it’s still how we kind of feel and communicate with each other. We always toss it around and if someone hasn’t heard it with each other, we’re always recommended stuff. As you say, there are always memories created in that and it could be of a specific time, like past tours and stuff like that. That’s the amazing thing about music and records and we have a lot of records like that associated with touring America. We spent a lot of time there. As I said, not recently, we’ll be happy to get back. But that’s a powerful thing, really.

Is there anything you want people to know about future plans or anything about the album? Just that we’re so excited to get back on our own tour and get back on American soil. It’s been a while and it’s genuinely a place we enjoy touring. I guess we’ll have to remind a few people as well that we have a record out and we’re back. Obviously, we never split up, we just took a little while. Once we finish this touring cycle, we’ll be going back into the studio, and it won’t be as long next time. hese days, the TV showrunner is king, and it's rare for the director of TV show episodes to make enough of a mark for their name to stand out. A rare exception is Hiro Murai, an acclaimed director of music videos who has been at the helm of episodes of Donald Glover's fantastic FX series “Atlanta.” Murai, who also directed Glover’s (aka Childish Gambino) much-lauded "This is America" video last year, has crafted a beautifully unique look and feel for “Atlanta.” These past successes made me really look forward to what he could do when given the chance to direct a movie.

FUN FACT And now… he has. Recently, streaming lovers saw the surprise release of “Guava Island,” a new musical film directed by Murai that stars Glover and Rihanna. The film, which is only 56 minutes long, debuted at Coachella over the weekend and hit Amazon Prime immediately after the premiere. “Guava Island” is odd, and at times feels like a goof. But it encapsulates the filmmaking style of Glover, Murai and Co., and I was entertained throughout. The film, which begins with an animated intro, is set on the titular fictional island, though it was filmed in Cuba. Glover stars as Deni Maroon, a popular guitar musician on the island who resolves to host a music festival, but finds his plans foiled by an evil business tycoon played by actor Nonso Anozie, who featured on Season 2 of “Game of Thrones.” With Glover in the lead, it’s not surprising that there are musical numbers, including a performance of “This is America.” What did come as a surprise, however, was that Rihanna does not sing. There’s not really any grand statement or purpose within. The film’s primary virtues are the opportunity to see the multi-talented Glover do his thing and Murai’s fine eye for scouting unique locations throughout Cuba. Needless to say, these locations have not been used often

Glover was just about everywhere this time last year. “This is America,” “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” the second season of “Atlanta” and a well-received appearance on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” all dropped within weeks of each other. If nothing else, it’s great to see Glover again for his annual takeover. Rihanna has always been underrated as an actress. The 2017 sci-fi film “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” was essentially two hours of nonsense wrapped around a dynamite five-minute short film about Rihanna as a shape-shifting alien entertainer and Ethan Hawke as her handler. She’s fine here, although she’s not given much to do, and neither is Letitia Wright, who proved so memorable in “Black Panther.” After viewing “Guava Island,” a major question needs to be asked: Why is superstar vocalist Rihanna in a musical but not given any musical numbers? The film somewhat resembles “Masked and Anonymous,” the 2003 indie film that starred Bob Dylan as a rock star in a future dystopia interacting with various big-name stars. Neil Young starred in a similar film last year called “Paradox,” and I highly recommend firing it up on Netflix if you’re looking for an unintentional laugh. OK, so “Guava Island” probably won’t go down as the most memorable, iconic or important work done by anyone involved with it, but it’s still an entertaining way to spend 56 minutes.

125th Penn Relays It’s that time of year where you look at the uber-crowded streets around University City and wonder, “where the hell did all these tourists come from?” Well, it’s the 125th running (pun intended) of the Penn Relays. This three-day blowout features a host of track and field events from all different talents and categories. The best from middle school to professional will cause oohs, aahs and that familiar ‘whoop,’ when sprinters are coming around the final turn. Boasts all the excitement and chaos of an Olympic event – at the University of Pennsylvania. Philly isn’t afraid to brag about its old age.
