The number of animals rescued from a house in Strawberry Mansion by the Pennsylvania SPCA this week. The house was scheduled to be condemned

by Philadelphia Licenses and Inspections which upon entering the home found 17 dogs, two of which were puppies, a pair of bearded dragons and one snake. Additionally, there were buckets that housed human waste. This is probably one of the few cases where either the person who owned this property or their tenants can readily be described as a piece of shit -- in both literal and figurative sense.

The amount of money the city spent on a payroll system that doesn’t work. A system called OnePhilly, which was designed to streamline everything from timekeeping to pension checks has been the equivalent of putting a toddler in an AP Honors Algebra class.

Since using the payroll software in March, scores of city employees have received erroneous payroll checks, namely the city’s police force. The discrepancies are so bad among the PPD that the FOP is suing the city.

T

hey already blew the horn to start the race.

When Tod Wentz arrived, it was technically too late to board his own boat.

My interview with Wentz was a month in the making, cancelled multiple times by inclement weather — we’re talking monsoon-like rain for three Wednesdays in a row — that cancelled the sailboat races held each Wednesday at the Riverton Yacht Club, just across the river from Northeast Philadelphia.

Even on this day, an overcast sky and steady drizzle threatened to make this interview one that was just not meant to be. Couple that with Wentz showing up at the last minute, and it felt like this was set to be the proverbial nail in that coffin.

That’s when I realized I completely underestimat-

Unable to jump aboard his own Mariner J22 sailboat, with a wave and a nod, we both hopped onto a dinghy and were allowed to hitch a ride aboard fellow sailor and family friend Craig Greenwood’s 1976 Pearson 30, a 30-foot sailboat called the “Songbird,” already loaded with a four-man crew all gunning to win, in this, the final race of the season at Riverton.

Even if you’re not familiar with Tod Wentz, it’s likely you’ve dined at one of his restaurants. Wentz, or just “Tod” to people that know him, is the mastermind behind the French-inspired Townsend (which is his actual given name), Al Mano, the Italian eatery in Fairmount and Oloroso, the swanky Spanish-tapas and sherry spot in the heart of the Gayborhood. On this day, he was late from busting up floor tiles at the Irish Pub right next to Oloroso at 1123

Walnut St., the future home of his American-fare and seafood spot, The Pearl Tavern.

For this interview, I’d planned to not discuss Wentz’ food or his inspiration behind it. It’s fine dining and casual fare, it’s obviously good or his success as a chef and quiet growth as one of Philadelphia’s preeminent restaurateurs wouldn’t be happening as rapidly as it has been over the last few years.

He was cool with that. On this day, we talked the other passion he’s had since he was a nine-yearold boy working on his first boat with his father a stone’s throw from the yacht club he grew up next to, in the only town he’s ever lived in. For Wentz, Riverton is it and being on the water is his time.

And my constant inquiries were infringing on that.

Going after it all It took about 3-4 questions before I realized that Tod Wentz and the crew of the Songbird wanted me to shut the fuck up.

We were in racing mode and the pitch of the boat from side to side and the stoic look on Greenwood’s face along with the crew of Bob Moorer, John Farr and Mike Warrington were indicators that we were racing.

“Get ready to move, guys!” Greenwood said as we came up on the first turn of the course, the scenic background of city and the Betsy Ross Bridge coming up closer and peering through heavy grey clouds. Stupidly, I asked, “Do you need me to move as well?”

“Umm, yeah, that’d be nice,” Greenwood said.

For Wentz, even though he was along for the ride as well, the focus was on. He sat perched on the starboard side of the boat for much of the race, helping with riggings when needed. With a beer in tow, he mostly sat quietly, staring out at the misty Delaware with a feeling of straight calm on his face.

Without saying anything, it was obvious that despite all the success from running lauded restaurants, the water was the place where the stress of it all goes away. His phone off, his keys and wad of cash sitting below deck, Wentz was free of it all for the duration of that race and as long as that boat remained in the water.

Despite the extra weight, dead air and a low tide that didn’t help matters much, Greenwood and the crew of the Songbird held its own and finished third in the race. The finish allowed for a second place finish overall in a

racing season that spans from Memorial Day to Labor Day. “Fucking awesome, right?” said Wentz, staring at me with a smile. “This is it, man.

I’m sorry you got to see it on [such a] crap day.

This place right around sunset makes for one hell of a picture.”

But the clouds did eventually lift, and so did the mood of the crew immediately after the race, as serious faces turned into smiles and copious cans of Coors Light and Budweiser were distributed to everyone aboard.

“This allows me to relax,” said Wentz, referring to sailing and not the cold can of Coors in his hand. “It’s a cross between being relaxed and being focused but on something different.

When you’re in kitchens, you’re focused on so many things at one time, and even though the finished product is rewarding, it’s overwhelming. Here, I get to focus on one thing and in a way, I get to unwind. It’s still intense for sure, just with less distractions.”

The success of Wentz’s establishments came at a rapid pace to a man who grew up in a sleepy, campy town like Riverton, New Jersey. Situated next to the larger town of Palmyra, Riverton is the utopia you wish you grew up in.

Large victorians and tree-lined streets lead to the edge of the Delaware overlooking the more industrial side of Northeast Philadelphia. The smell of meat emanates, courtesy of the massive Dietz and Watson plant on the water’s edge. From the Philly side, one would see a backdrop that Norman Rockwell could’ve painted: a beach front illuminated by the lights of sailboats in the water juxtaposed with large houses along the edge. One of those houses is Wentz’s childhood home. Another is his current home, a stone’s throw from the yacht club in which he learned to sail.

“I started sailing at nine-years-old,” Wentz said. “My first boat was an old Penguin that I fixed up with my dad and we sailed. This is what I know, and I feel fortunate all these years later to have it to get away from the city. I mean the city is 20 minutes away, but when you’re here, it feels so much farther. It’s hard to be uptight living in a place like this, even if there are things that force you to be sometimes.”

By year’s end, Wentz will have five establishments in Philadelphia — the four aforementioned and his overtaking of the lease at TALK, the Rittenhouse eatery that lasted just five months before shuttering its doors. His daily routine is a constant push-pull of emails and calls from staff and vendors. In fact, he revealed that despite being a part of the racing season at Riverton, this appearance was one of a handful as his energy needs to be laser-focused on The Pearl Tavern.

“First off, I mean, there’s really no break,” Wentz said. “You’re on nearly 24 hours a day.

I’m serious, 24 hours a day. Even though my phone is away, it’s on, you know? Listen, I feel very fortunate in what we’ve been able to accomplish in a short time and the success we’ve had, but for me, in addition to the food now, it’s all about creating a customer experience.

That’s probably the most stressful part to be honest, that it’s not just about the food anymore. It’s about giving an experience that’s so important.”

And the realization that there’s not much he can do about any of it on the water?

“Yeah, that took a while to realize, but at the same time, I come here to shed a lot of that stress,” he continued. “It’s why I haven’t been here as much as I’d like to be, but when I’m here, I’m in the middle of the river. Not a whole lot I can do about it if it can’t be done over the phone.”

Once again, the conversation tilted towards the stress of Wentz’s other side.

Greenwood then arrived with perfect timing and said, “Guys, you good? Get another beer. Let’s enjoy this.”

The boat continued to sail down the Delaware towards the city, and I realized “this” was the sunset Wentz told me about. It suddenly appeared as evening began to turn to night and the Songbird continued to sail down the Delaware, with classic rock tunes and soul music serving as the soundtrack. It was as awesome as he described, and in that brief moment, even I was able to forget about just how disgusting the mighty Delaware appears and that the edge of Northeast Philly was on the other side, providing a stark contrast to the Jersey side.

It felt good to be out on the water. Like, really good.

One can only imagine how it felt for an overworked, stressed out, rapidly emerging chef-restaurateur who has Philly’s palette at his fingertips across multiple cuisine inspirations.

“The Delaware is as much a part of me as I am of it,” Wentz said. “I grew up on it, and when you’re out here, it doesn’t feel like the city, it doesn’t feel dirty. It’s literally a happy place for me and where I’d always rather be.”

For Puente, this kind of introspection and reflection is rooted in the symbolism of the butterfly, which serves as a representation of migration in many traditional stories, and the papel picado itself, which is often used for ceremony or celebration, such as during the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos or the “Day of the Dead.”

Ask her and Puente will recall the moment when she learned that a group of butterflies is called a kaleidoscope as when the shapes and patterns of Look Up! really clicked in her artistic mind. Additionally, Puente emphasizes the importance of the placement of Look Up! and for one to take in the installation fully, a

PHILADELPHIAWEEKLY.COM @PHILLYWEEKLY viewer must actually tilt his or her head up in order to experience a literal shift in perspective—one that she hopes will spark figurative shifts in perspective, too.

“What I’m carving is an articulation of a new idea, of that moment when an idea is sparked,” Puente said. “In the same way that a kaleidoscope can shift the view, that’s what I aim to do in my work. I feel like, politically, we’re learning a lot about what we don’t want, and that is a very clarifying energy. What this work is doing is celebrating this moment of great clarity.”

But the title of the work is a call to action for a reason, Puente said. More than simply amplifying this moment of clarity, Puente sees Look Up! as the path way to “solution-oriented thinking.”

“Solution-oriented thinking happens when we’re nourished, and when we’re confident

They’re the entryway into conversation about the political moment or about what’s important to an individual; because if we reverse-engineer a social justice movement, it begins with the heart — that individual perspective and an individual willingness to be receptive to solutions.”

Wahl expresses a similar sentiment when talking about his impetus for bringing Los Trompos and Look Up! to the Kimmel Center, talking about the ways in which the arts “have the ability to help us recognize each other” and cherish the value that each small piece of the community has to the whole.

“I think it’s an opportunity for us to recognize the contributions of Mexico artistically—both from Mexico itself and locally, the

“It was so important to me to recognize that in our space, particularly at a time when I feel like people are not celebrating those gifts.”

On Oct. 3, Philadelphians will have the opportunity to be a part of this celebration with “Songs We Left Behind.” At this event, Puente said that she will be sharing more about the process behind Look Up!, including the specific songs that were “meaningful” in crafting the work. The event will also invite members of the Philly Latinx community to share their stories, she added. “Songs We Left Behind” starts at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

For Puente, this sharing of stories in one of the most prominent centers for arts and culture in the city is an echo of the message that she hopes to impart with Look Up! “I think it’s important for artists, for women of color and for Latinx artists, to claim their agency. And we already do,” Puente said.

“I think the importance of being in a public space like this is to share with an audience that this agency is claimed. I would say that Look Up! Look In is a reminder that there is agency and power and strength within each of us already.”

“We have no employees, we have no paid helpers or volunteers at all, so all of the proceeds are donated to those charities after compensating the musicians,” he said.

“We’re going to highlight all Philly bands so that people can understand the power and the magnitude of the Philadelphia music scene that’s really emerging and coming up,” he said.

In a city as vibrant as ours, finding talent to perform at the festival was the easiest part of all the planning, Seltzer claimed.

The Philly bands featured were easy to discover - they have music on streaming platforms and have gone on tour around the country before. This makes it easy for Seltzer to seek them out and help bring attention to the city’s music scene.

Of Jokers, Irishmen and Astronauts T A rundown of the big and small screen films headed our way just in time for fall

he turn of the calendar from August to September means a sudden, significant change in the type of movies arriving weekly. Action blockbusters and superhero blowouts give way to the slow hum of fall prestige, as reports trickle in from Toronto and Venice about the festival favorites we’ll be arguing about months from now and into Oscar season.

The story of the fall? Several of the films will arrive on Netflix first, and then hit theaters a few weeks later. Here’s some of what you can expect on area screens this fall, between now and Thanksgiving.

Brad Pitt didn’t star in a movie for a couple of years, but he returned this summer in director Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and on Sept. 20 you can catch him in the space drama “Ad Astra.”

Directed by James Gray, it’s the latest in the subgenre that I’ll call “elevated space,” in the tradition of “Interstellar” and “Gravity.” The supporting cast is a miniature “Space Cowboys” reunion, with Tommy Lee Jones and

Also on Sept. 20, “Downton Abbey” gets a feature movie sequel, with most of the surviving cast returning for a story set during a visit by the king of England in the late 1920s, as the Abbey’s staff is at odds with the king’s court.

Sylvester Stallone can’t stop making sequels to his classic movies, and on Sept. 20 he’ll return with the fifth (and allegedly final) Rambo movie, titled “Rambo: Last Blood.”

I’m not the first to make this joke, but why isn’t it called “Rambo No. 5”?

On Sept. 27 comes the first of Netflix’s substantial awards slate, with Steven Soderbergh’s “The Laundromat.” Starring Meryl Streep, Gary Oldman and David Schwimmer, the story is set against the backdrop of the Panama Papers scandal. After three weeks in theaters, it’ll arrive on Netflix on Oct. 18.

Todd Phillips’ “Joker,” starring Joaquin Phoenix as the iconic Batman villain, has already set off a massive culture war even before anyone who wasn’t at the Venice Film Festival — where it won the Golden Lion award — has seen it. Whether it’s a dark masterpiece or an

Remember the story about the female astronaut who wore an adult diaper to drive across several states to confront her lover? That gets a fictionalized movie treatment called “Lucy in the Sky,” starring Natalie Portman, and it also arrives on Oct. 4.

Eddie Murphy is on the comeback trail, with both a return to stand up comedy and a Saturday Night Live hosting stint on the way, and he’s also starring in the blaxploitation biopic “Dolemite is My Name,” which hits theaters Oct. 4 and is slated to arrive on Netflix three weeks later.

It’s Will Smith vs. Will Smith in “Gemini Man,” which reaches theaters Oct. 11. Directed by Ang Lee, the film features an age-appropriate Smith getting into one little fight — no, check that — going into battle with a de-aged clone of himself. “Game of Thrones” co-creator David Benioff is one of three screenwriters.

tant on his smartphone. The film, arriving on Oct. 11, had one of the more ghastly trailers of the summer, but Spike Jonze’s “Her” had a similar premise and was a near-masterpiece.

Also on Oct. 11, “Breaking Bad” finally gets a long-awaited sequel movie, “El Camino.” The Netflix-exclusive picture follows the post-Walter White adventures of Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), and series creator Vince Gilligan wrote and directed.

“Parasite,” the latest film from “Snowpiercer” director Bong Joon-Ho, has been drawing rave reviews on the festival circuit, and the South Korean film is set to hit theaters stateside on Oct. 11.

Taika Waititi, who directed the well-received Marvel movie “Thor: Ragnarok,” has helmed a natural follow-up project entitled “Jojo Rabbit,” a World War II satire in which the director himself plays a boy’s imaginary friend, who is Adolf Hitler. Arriving Oct. 18, opposite sequels to “Zombieland” and “Maleficent,” “Jojo Rabbit” stars Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell.

Director Robert Eggers, who made the shockingly scary “The Witch” back in 2015, returns with “The Lighthouse,” an A24 picture starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe arriving Oct. 18. No evil goats this time, as far as we know.

In “Last Christmas” (Nov. 8), Emilia Clarke tries to get a post-“Game of Thrones” movie career off the ground, in a holiday romance that co-stars “Crazy Rich Asians” leading man Henry Golding. Paul Feig, who made “Bridesmaids” and last year’s underrated “A Simple Favor,” directs.

“Doctor Sleep,” arriving Nov. 8, is a sequel to “The Shining,” starring Ewan McGregor as an adult version of Danny Torrance, the kid on the tricycle in the original film. Directed by Mike Flanagan, the film is based on a 2013 sequel novel by Stephen King, although there’s no Jack Nicholson or Shelley Duvall.

On Nov. 15, “Charlie’s Angels” gets another reboot, with Kristen Stewart, Ella Balinska

and Naomi Scott (Jasmine from the “Aladdin” remake) playing the Angels for director Elizabeth Banks, who also plays Bosley.

On Nov. 22, the kids get a treat as “Frozen 2” arrives from Disney, with a brand new suite of musical numbers. On the same day, it’s “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” with the Mr. Rogers biopic starring Tom Hanks, and finally, “21 Bridges,” the Philly-shot cop film starring Chadwick Boseman.

Also this fall: The Philadelphia Film Festival runs Oct. 17-27, and while the lineup won’t be announced for a few more weeks, you can expect to see a lot of the titles set for release in November and December. Also, the new AMC movie theater on Market St., in the new Fashion District Philadelphia complex, is set to finally open sometime before the end of the year, giving Center City its first multiplex in decades.

PHILADELPHIAWEEKLY.COM @PHILLYWEEKLY Based on the life of Colaizzo’s friend Brittany O’Neill, Bell’s on-screen character “Brittany Folgen” is an edgy, Philly-born, party girl who, as a woman, finds her life, work relationships and health at a crossroads. Rather than go to a pricey gym she can’t afford, Brittany gets pushed by her neighbor to run – first in old Chuck Taylors, then running shoes, one block, then two, with incremental baby steps along the way – then pursue the New York City Marathon. Rather than play this for laughs, Bell finds the soulful sadness of deep and meaningful change – inside and outside – without saccharine dialogue.

Brittany Runs a Marathon opened in Philadelphia on Aug. 30 before hitting Amazon Prime earlier this month. Recently, the pair hit The Logan to discuss the film and the collaboration that ensued as a result.

Whether you knew each other before this film, what did each of you want going forward – Paul for the character you had written, Jillian for acting choices going forward?

Paul Downs Colaizzo: I wanted someone who was…

Jillian Bell: Sexy, very sexy.

Paul Downs Colaizzo: And leggy. I wanted someone smart, passionate, naturally funny and with a well of emotions who was willing to be exposed and would push themselves at all times. Her character is this story’s protagonist and antagonist. Much of the story happens inside of her. So we needed accessibility, and someone who could show their guarded nature while letting the audience in.

Jillian Bell: When I read the script, I immediately wanted to meet Paul because I wanted to know how it was he understood the female brain so well. I wanted to know the person who wrote this script I related to, so wholeheartedly. It was as if, after reading, I wanted to know what were your intentions with my daughter,[as if] the script was my daughter. I got protective. Since we were on the same page about themes, and what we wanted audiences to leave the theater feeling and thinking…

Paul Downs Colaizzo: …and how delicately we wanted to treat it. We didn’t want to overlook anything. We [scrutinized] through every word. We only had 28 days to shoot this, and Jillian and I met, once a week, every week during the seven months of pre-production, to make sure we were on the same page regarding the story we were telling.

Jillian Bell: It was a lot of Skyping.

How did you learn to trust the ideas of earnestness, poignancy, even the concept of motivation and empowerment? That’s not an easy thing to do without being syrupy – and yet the two of you did exactly that.

Paul Downs Colaizzo: At the center of the story is a character in transition, replacing old behavior with new. What we did – even though the character is funny and Jillian is funny with a cast of equally brilliant supporting actors – was approach this as drama.

Exploring human behavior. We’re not putting additional layers on, or selling a feeling. We’re

simply exploring a character when she’s trying to change.

Jillian Bell: The script showed the real struggles of transformation. The emotional struggles. That was immensely relatable. And we often went for the reverse reactions, like during a moment of intense seriousness, we play it with levity. In that way, there’s balance so that you don’t think we’re being too cheesy or motivational.

Paul, you’re a theater guy primarily.

Jillian, audiences know you for caustic comedy. What was most important about straying from your comfort zones?

Paul Downs Colaizzo: We were placing bets on each other. We needed each of us to do the thing we were charged with doing, no matter what.

Jillian Bell: And we leaned on each other the entire time to do it. I told him that I would be on set like an open wound through the entire production.

Paul Downs Colaizzo: Plus, we didn’t want to let the other one down, and what we were delivering for the film. There was no option to slow down or stop – we had to go the distance for each other.

Knowing and dealing with the real ‘Brittany.’ It’s not as if she’s an historical character but was here a weight that came with that knowledge, an honesty you felt as if you had to convey?

Paul Downs Colaizzo: I was inspired by her. Her DNA is all over it. I fictionalized the character for the sake of dramatic arcs, and

the two Brittany’s share nothing of the same backstory or idiosyncrasies. The emotional journey is something they both share, and I supported and encouraged Jillian in embodying that.

Jillian Bell: I only met her while filming one of the scenes. After that, we’ve had a chance to hang out. She could inspire a few more films.

Paul Downs Colaizzo: She’s now working in refugee relocation , genocide prevention and having an incredibly insightful experience, and post-Sundance, having realization s about her body and her world.

Jillian Bell: She’s not a jingle writer like my Brittany. And her journey made me want to examine my own body, my own world. Put a microscope on how I treat myself.

So you are from this area, the Pittsburgh-to-Cherry Hill axis in your formative years. How did that play into the film.

Were there prompts you have Jillian as to her character’s language or dialogue?

Jillian Bell: You mean like saying ‘water?’

Paul Downs Colaizzo: Philadelphia – icon-ically for me - has the feeling of home.

Not just because I lived near here. It’s the seed of our nation. Plus, I wanted her to have some place that had a welcoming vibe. Manhattan is the dream, a place you still can’t wrap your head around. The feeling of support and comfort is what was Philly.
