Bill T. Jones: Story/Time

Bill T. Jones is full of ideas—primarily about process, movement and narrative. This is the stuff that inspired Story/Time, his 70-minute, 70-story dance experiment that mines Jones’ fascination with storytelling. He sits at a table, in spotlight, with a microphone and script in hand while his Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company interprets inside taped-off grids and mic’d transparent cubes. It’s something Jones has said came from a reflection, after retiring from the stage nearly five years ago, wondering How do I perform now? And what do I have to say?

It’s a work that’s inspired by John Cage, the legendary composer and avant-garde Merce Cunningham collaborator, and serves as the raw material for Jones’ brilliant new multi-media book, Story/Time: The Life of an Idea, from which he’ll read at the Free Library this week. He’s been the consummate arbiter of dance in the 20th century, his marvelous choreography a mix of outrageous athleticism, free-form contemporary experimentation and classic elegance. And even if he’s not dancing anymore—well, he says he dances when he’s happy, like in his living room—he’s creating compelling and still-avant garde performances in “retirement.”

A giant among men in the dance world, Jones is an artist who’s made his mark pushing limits and creating original material that poses questions, tells important stories and reaches further than most dance companies’ imaginative scopes. The African American and HIV+ icon has often used his outsider perspective to create award-winning work, like he did for Broadway’s Fela! and Spring Awakening. The MacArthur “Genius” Award, which he claimed in 1994, is an apt landmark for the accolades Jones has collected for decades; his work is cerebral, ambitious and intellectually challenging. So it’s no surprise that, in 2014, at 62 years young, he’s still pushing the envelope and stretching the boundaries with new work that’s rich in storytelling and explores the entirety of his painstaking process. For our money, comedy doesn’t get much better than Hannibal Buress. The 31-year-old Chicagoan and former writer for SNL and 30 Rock has been part of numerous “comedians to watch” lists since at least 2010, and thankfully, 2014 is the year he finally broke out into the mainstream. The audaciously cerebral co-star of The Eric Andre Show on Cartoon Network since 2012 has since been featured on the Comedy Central hit Broad City and is making waves—and creating hordes of new fans—with his unique brand of reflective, story-telling standup.

Among the victims of Buress’ comedy: Guys sporting handlebar mustaches in Brooklyn, where he currently lives. “It’s cool if you have a handlebar mustache, but don’t try to have a conversation with me like you don’t have a handlebar mustache,” he jokes in one routine. “If you got a handlebar mustache, all I want to hear you talking about is Slinkys and kazoos. That’s it.”

(We’ll cross our fingers and hope the guy on page 10 doesn’t catch those fighting words.)

Chatting with PW by phone, Buress offers some no-nonsense advice to would-be comedians: “Check out open mics, and just get to it. ’Cause for the most part, you’re not gonna be good right away. By thinking about it and delaying it, that’s time you’re wasting. In those first two months, you’re gonna suck anyway. TASTE Philadelphia Festival of Food, Wine and Spirits It’s not every day that you get to experience a mix of renowned chefs and TV personalities putting things in your mouth. This weekend, though, that’s exactly what’s happening at the 2014 TASTE Philadelphia Festival of Food, Wine and Spirits. Spanning three days in the newly renovated convention center at Valley Forge Casino Resort, this appetizing event lets attendees savor new wines, try out some national and local restaurant menus, enjoy gastronomical goodies from over 150 vendors and exclusive cookbook signings, plus witness demos and interviews with industry vets.

Among the cooking pros set to show off their skillet skills are Paul Drew of Phillip’s Seafood in Atlantic City, Will Cook for Sex author Rocky Fino, The Chef’s Kitchen’s Darryl Harmon, formerly of Water Works Restaurant, and The Basic Art of Italian Cooking author Maria Liberati.

Naturally, Philadelphia’s finest will be in the house: South Philly son Tony Luke Jr. (pictured), Top Chef winner Nicholas Elmi of Laurel restaurant and former Phillies star and broadcast commentator Gary “Sarge” Matthews, alongside Food Network Star’s Nicole Gaffney and best-selling cookbook author and chef Rocco DiSpirito. If Arthur Miller was alive, he’d turn 99 this week. Alas, the playwright legend/giant/icon passed in 2005 after an incredible life (which included a marriage to Marilyn Monroe), and though his 1953 masterwork The Crucible—a killer take on the infamous Salem witch trials in the late 1600s—is often cited as his biggest and baddest contribution to American theater, it’s Death of a Salesman that still resonates in timeless and searingly affecting ways. Debuting right here in Philly at the Locust Street Theater in 1949, it’s got as much power and meaning today as it did for audiences in post-WWII U.S. of A. EgoPo Classic Theater kicks off its 2014-15 American Giants-themed season and celebrates Miller himself with this production, focusing on Miller’s Jewish and Brooklyn heritage.

Willy Loman (Will-he Low-man?) is the salesman in question—and yeah, he dies. So EgoPo’s production looks at a family sitting shiva for their tragic patriarch’s demise. Willy’s wife, Linda, and his sons, Biff and Happy, are characters as enduring as Willy: Linda’s a devoted but worried spouse, Biff is a once-glorious football hero who’s salt-of-the-earth tenor and lack of status quo accomplishments are the bane of his parents’ existence, with Happy the womanizing, similarly-unsuccessful little brother. The play’s an incredibly apt articulation of the eternal Darwinism of capitalism, the oppressive notion of familial expectations and the haunting spectre of disapproval—the competitive keeping-up-with-the-Jonses mentality of wealth accumulation and proof of success, whatever that means. // B.C.

All That You Must Know Self-declared uber-expert John Hodgman holds forth on nerds, President Obama and what happens after the world doesn’t end.

ohn Hodgman’s turn-of-the-millennium geek credentials are impeccable: He’s served as The Daily Show’s “resident expert” on all things, penned three thick volumes of comprehensive world knowledge entirely made up by him, and rocketed to widespread semi-fame as the hapless, nerdy face of “the PC” in a series of popular Apple computer commercials. Granted, he’s perhaps slightly less recognizable these days, since sprouting an unlikely amount of facial hair. (“Please do not look Mr. Hodgman directly in the soul patch,” warns a comedy emcee at the beginning of his Netflix standup special Ragnarok: “That is where he believes his soul resides.”) Hodgman is in town Friday to perform at Underground Arts; he spoke with PW by phone from Brooklyn last week.

Some of your fans may not realize that your family is from Philadelphia.

My mom, who’s no longer alive, was born there and lived there with her five brothers and sisters. And my wife attended college at Bryn Mawr—I’m not sure if you’ve heard of it? It’s a prestigious school of witchcraft and wizardry outside of Philadelphia. So I have scrapple in my veins. I’m right now eating some delicious split pea soup, but I wish it could be delicious scrapple. That’s my wish every day. I don’t want to tell the people of Philadelphia I’m not coming to see them, but ...

Can you explain what exactly is up with your facial hair situation this week?

I have had a mustache since January of 2011. Then, over the course of the summer, I decided to see what else I could grow, having known since adolescence that I had a very Rorschachlike beard pattern. I decided to get rid of the beard last Friday, under general—I’m not going to say pressure; let’s just say a man grows a beard after 40 years old in order to test the affections of the world to him, and the test came back negative. So I decided to go all the way and take off the mustache too—because it’s been a long time since I’ve seen that guy.

And then I remembered: I hate that guy. What do you call that depression above your upper lip? So now I’ve been trying to grow back the mustache with all the passion of Jack on Lost trying to get back to the island.

How, if at all, does that relate to the show you’re performing at Underground Arts?

It’s the thing that happens when you turn 40 years old, and the world does not end the way the Mayans predicted it would—and you were kind of hoping it would. Accepting existentially uncomfortable change is part of your job as a human, and that is what the show is about: what to do with your life when the world doesn’t end. Part of that, for me, is telling more straightforwardly personal jokes and stories, as my own life—not [in character] as a deranged millionaire but as a more normal human being, a demi-celebrity with a regular wife and children. There will be certain amounts of figurative and literal wardrobe changes—which means I am going to take off my clothes and dress as Ayn Rand sometimes during

the performance, so please warn your readers that there will be some unwanted nudity in the program and some adult themes. By adult themes, I don’t mean cool adult themes; I do discuss drugs somewhat, but mostly I discuss mortality and dread. So if your children are into that, by all means bring them. But I do like to warn people that you are going to see literal sides and angles of me that nobody asks to see.

The philtrum. That’s the depression above your upper lip.

Five years ago, during Barack Obama’s first year in office, you delivered the traditional roast at the White House press correspondents’ dinner, and you called Obama “our first nerd president.” How do you think he’s lived up to that?

Unfortunately, rather well—in that there are aspects to jock culture which, when properly deployed, are very positive. Now, I denounce superstition even slightly more than I denounce the glorification of dumb running and kicking games, but jockism does value bold choices made on gut instinct. And while all choices with regard to, say, the Middle East are odious, while I do prefer the president’s caution in terms of deploying force, I wish he would not, in a nerdy sort of way, go around admitting failure all the time. Because he is just sharpening knives for his enemies.

It’s been suggested recently that the American geek is currently in the midst of an ongoing identity crisis.

Yes. Next question? [laughs] There is a truth in what you say that strikes at the very philtrum of my soul. There are those of us in the world who experienced nerdery that was marginal in society. We sat in the edges of the cafeteria, played our little card games and wore our little vests and fedoras

and took comfort in each other. We would pass around code words, like “Worldcon,” and “Shang-chi, Master of Kung-Fu”— little passwords acknowledging that we all belonged to the same secret club.

But now, of course, while I say that I don’t go to Comic-Con in San Diego because I’m hiding out in Maine, in fact it is in part because I know that it has become such a popular event that the total crush of population that falls upon San Diego looks a little intimidating. And obviously that represents how central our formerly nerdy genre has become to popular culture. Even [Doctor Who producer Steven] Moffat’s provocative attempt to shove away all of the normal teenage girls that he and his predecessor rather accidentally attracted to the Doctor Who franchise by casting handsome, cute young people—by now casting a grumpy old man who literally yells at his young female companion to go away; the subtext is not that sub—nonetheless has left the show more pervasive and popular than ever.

Speaking of science fiction writers: Your friend, the bestselling and usually clean-shaven novelist John Scalzi, posted a photo of himself with a mustache yesterday, and a lot of people seemed to think it made him look like you.

I have to say, the resemblance to me with a thin mustache was more striking than I felt comfortable with. I love John Scalzi, and I love his work, and I’m happy to bear a resemblance, but I was disturbed to see someone on Twitter tell him: “You look like Hodgman’s younger brother.”  Fri., Oct. 17. 7pm. $25. Lakefront Oktoberfest On a crisp, cool autumn day, few styles of beer are more enjoyable than a traditional marzen, aka Oktoberfest: a perfect complement to brats and sausages, festive music and the changing of the seasons. Milwaukee’s Lakefront Brewery adheres closely to tradition. Copper colored and boasting a puffy white head, this is meant to be consumed in big, healthy gulps. The body is full and sweet, with toasted bread, caramel and a touch of marmalade balanced by mild, earthy bitterness. This is one of those beers that doesn’t try to impress with wildness it just sets out to do its job—to give you something to quaff with friends. You can see how it lubricates your social gathering at Madira.

Otter Creek Overgrown Before witbiers and IPAs dominated the craft beer landscape, the go-to style you knew every brewery would make, and make well, was the pale ale. Crisp, bitter and drinkable, the pale ale is no longer top dog in the craft beer world, but that’s not because it isn’t worth drinking.

Otter Creek’s Overgrown is a good example of that. With a big, floral nose, there is no doubt from the very first whiff that this is a beer for juicy, fruity hop lovers. Bitterness is brisk but not overpowering, allowing Overgrown to drink much easier than its impressive aroma would suggest. Yummy. Go get your hops on at Flanigan’s Boathouse, Field House and The Pour House Westmont.

Samuel Adams Octoberfest Opinions on the seasonal beers by Samuel Adams tend to vary, with one noteworthy exception: their Octoberfest.

This is a beer that is almost universally enjoyed, and it’s easy to see why. Toffee, toasted black bread, baked nuts, sweet chewy candy and airy hops that bring to mind freshly raked leaves come together for the ideal autumn drinking experience. There is just enough bitterness to add balance, but not to impede drinkability.

Medium bodied with a frothy head, this beer drinks wonderfully and goes well with all manner of food. It’s all over the city right now, so look for it in places like Glenmorgan Bar & Grill, Wrap Shack, Daly’s Irish Pub and many others.

Sprecher Hard Root Beer Some might argue that this brew does not belong in a craft beer roundup.

The fact is, though, root beer began life as an alcoholic beverage. Traditionally brewed like a beer using sassafras root, it was a low-alcohol beer that did not evolve into a soft drink till the late 19th century. By Prohibition, the historic alcoholic root beer had all but died out.

Thankfully, the folks at Sprecher have brought it back. And yes, it tastes like root beer, with the touches of vanilla, wintergreen and sweetness you’d expect. Some sweet malts remind you that this is brewed like a beer, though, as does the mild heat of alcohol in the finish. If this is what root beer used to be, it’s a shame it disappeared. See for yourself at Madira.

Tröegs Master of Pumpkins The folks at Tröegs have crafted a pumpkin beer that manages to have big, assertive flavor without an overpowering assault on your senses. You know what to expect: chewy pumpkin sweetness cut with all those pumpkin pie spices you know and love (cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, etc.). What you probably don’t expect are the grassy undertones, courtesy of fermentation with a saison yeast. The result is that this draft-only beer has a light, almost cidery zest and a spicy brightness that makes it stand out from other pumpkins brews. It won’t be around for long, so get it while you can at McGillan’s Olde Ale House. | ERIC SAN JUAN

A New Beginning Lolita reimagines classic Oaxacan recipes to fresh, tasty effect.

I

t’s hard to believe that pork rinds were once considered the epitome of junk food. I remember growing up in a part of the suburbs where, conversationally, they were fairly ubiquitous stand-ins for everything low-end and unhealthy and embarrassingly unsophisticated. They were the Jerry Springer of the snack world.

If only I could go back in time and introduce the inveterately snobby 12-year-old Brian to the chicharones ahumados from the newly revamped Lolita: Puffed up like Kanye’s ego, as airy as the space between Teresa Giudice’s ears, these wonders of pig-skin transmogrification are as addictive as something Walter White might have cooked up in his lab. A dusting of cider-vinegar powder, coriander, cumin, salt, sugar and piquin pepper gives them just enough bite to not be defined by their inherent richness, and the accompanying dips—marvelous ranch with charred spring onions, hot sauce vibrating with roasted habañero—up the ante. Chased with swigs from a refreshing cucumber-jalapeño margarita, they are just about perfect.

There’s a lot to love about the newly revamped Lolita. The space has been reconfigured so that the kitchen, which used to be in the back, now runs along the right-hand side of the long, narrow space, along with the bar. In the process, Chef Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran, highly regarded revivifiers of 13th Street, lost some 10 seats in the dining room. But it doesn’t feel that way: It’s every bit as buzzy as it always was. Still, it’s a uniquely intimate setting as well, the flickering candles at each table casting it into its own halo of light, the substantial hum of the other guests a pleasant white noise.

The best dishes here channel classic Oaxacan recipes of Mexico and refract them through the lens of our own time and place.

Roasted chicken flautas, for example, were moist-centered and encased in a tortilla as perfectly crispy as a spring roll’s shell. But it was the cashew-pasilla mole mancha manteles, a rich, sneakily spicy sauce, that raised the dish to unaccustomed heights. Duck-fat tamal worked for similar reasons—its own memorable mole, this one based on peanuts and ancho, as well as the lightness of the masa and the delicacy of the smoked duck and rajas. Those moles take days to make, and the effort and love that are cooked into them are clear with each bite.

Tacos play a far greater role now than they did before Lolita’s re-

concepting. From the much-heralded trompo, I was easily won over by the pork shoulder ones, the meat lovingly rubbed with smoked morita chile, garlic, and piloncillo (basically an unrefined cane sugar), and then basted with pork fat. An accompaniment of charred pineapple salsa, as well as a slice of translucent, crisped-up pork cheek, worked to highlight the meat’s own sweet-smoky notes. Seared shrimp tacos didn’t fare as well; with both, however, the house-made tortillas were remarkable.

This kitchen, under Chef de Cuisine Todd Satterfield, is operating at a high level in terms of flavor and expressiveness. Even a seemingly straightforward recent special—thick coins of salt-roasted sweet potatoes smashed by hand and crisped in the fryer, then glazed with chipotle, honey and shallots—was memorable in ways that few tubers ever get to be.

All of this successful food was occasionally undermined, however, by delays between courses that stretched on for too long. It definitely seemed as if the dining room could have used an extra server to take

Atmosphere: Appealing and intimate, if occasionally crowded. some of the heat off the ones who were working the space as best they could, given their seemingly inadequate numbers. (Service was, however, friendly, patient, knowledgeable and earnest throughout.)

The cocktail menu is well-conceived, with an excellent selection of margaritas and other thoughtful concoctions, and the tequila and mezcal selection is well-chosen, as are the beers. Indeed, if I hadn’t had to drive home, I would have been thrilled to pair up the Goose Island Lolita with the excellent Mexican-chocolate ice cream, a fabulously creamy cupful whose hit of heat smacked the back of the throat with paradoxical force and subtlety. It’s a great preparation, easily as memorable as the gelato version at Capogiro but here minus the side of attitude I received last time I visited there. I also loved the tangy pecan cheesecake with its goat’s milk caramel and anchochocolate crust.

The new Lolita, overall, is a very successful re-working of a restaurant that, in its first 10 years, did so much to define the neighborhood’s dining scene. With these changes, it’s poised for another decade. I’ll be back plenty: For those chicharones, yes, but also for so much else. 

In 2001, I moved from Philly to Atlanta, where I lived for six years. I had never lived anywhere but Philly, and you can imagine the culture shock; the Civil War seeps into daily life and conversation down South in a way it never does up North. I got used to seeing the occasional Confederate flag,

Even if they didn’t physically interact— Grotesk Hal), Swis721 BT (Roman) although my two Confederate spies, Rose Greenhow and Belle Boyd, do—it was important to me that they were running into the same people, and that there was a constant cause and effect, with one spy’s behavior influencing another spy’s situation. For example, Rose Greenhow, who lived and operated a rebel espionage ring in Washington, D.C., was spying on the Union army; one of her targets was another protagonist, Union solder and spy Emma Edmonds, who had disguised herself as a man and enlisted as Private Frank Thompson. Rose’s spying affects Emma and her comrades in dramatic ways.

In another example, Belle Boyd has a heated encounter with controversial Union General Benjamin “Beast” Butler—who basically advocated that the women of New Orleans be treated like common prostitutes—and in the next scene, General Butler recruits Richmond matron Elizabeth Van Lew to become a

aren Abbott first hit the New York Times bestseller list with her 2007 book Sin in the Second City: Madams, Ministers, Playboys, and the Battle for America’s Soul.

It was a provocative, poignant, funny and exhaustively researched history of brothels in turn-of-the-century Chicago, and specifically of two sisters, Minna and Ada Everleigh, who propelled themselves to illicit aristocracy as the city’s most elegantly sophisticated madams. Readers nationwide were captivated by the book’s storytelling muscle—but those in Philadelphia weren’t surprised, as Abbott had spent half the 1990s spinning similarly powerful true-life narratives as a writer for Philadelphia Weekly.

Abbott’s new book, Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy, digs even deeper into the past to find its thrills: It’s an epic saga of four women who served undercover as spies for both sides during the Civil War—including one Richmond society lady, Elizabeth Van Lew, who came from a family of Philadelphia abolitionists.

PW caught up with the author for a chat this week in advance of her appearance at the Free Library on Wed., Oct. 22, where she’ll be part of a discussion along with fellow popular historians James McPherson and S.C. Gwynne.

This is your third book telling the story of women leading bold lives against the backdrop of a unique historical moment: first the brothel-running Everleigh sisters, then burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee in American Gypsy and now the four protagonists of Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy. What is it about these subjects that speaks to you?

The short answer is that I like to write about women whose lives I wish I lived; at my core, I’m jealous of all of them. They’re not in the history books as much as they deserve to be. They pushed and poked at society’s mores, and chafed at their perceived limitations. They were revolutionary. The word “maverick” is interesting—it always struck me as being a historically male word—but I like to write about mavericks. Mavericks with vaginas.

Tell us about your early life in Philadelphia. When did you know you were meant to be a writer? I was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Norristown, just outside the city. I spent 16 years in Catholic school—grade school and high school at Visitation BVM and the now-defunct Bishop Kenrick, both in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia— and then went to college at Villanova.

Which probably explains the fascination with hookers and strippers, but I digress.

As a kid, I liked to write, but I didn’t think that was a viable career choice. My dream, actually, was to be a white girl rapper and join Salt-N-Pepa—which obviously was a much more viable career choice. In college, I randomly applied for an internship at Philadelphia magazine. In between fetching theater tickets and fact-checking, I did some interview transcribing, particularly for the immensely talented Lisa DePaulo. It was fascinating to listen to her question her subjects and sources, and I learned a lot about how to put people at ease, which questions to ask and in what order, how to broach the more contentious topics of discussion.

Soon after graduation, I started at Philadelphia Weekly as the listings editor. Organization is not my strong suit, so that didn’t last long; there was always someone calling and yelling that I forgot their event. This was 1995, and the saving grace was that email was still a relatively new phenomenon, so at least I didn’t have to deal with a full inbox of irate event planners.

Then you became a PW staff writer, and the work you did in that position prefigured the authorial career you have now: digging up the warts-and-all stories of remarkable people, both famous and not. I think the most important thing journalism taught me is to mine for details. The details are key. You can’t try to be funny or strange or poignant; you have to let the details be funny or strange or poignant for you.

So I’d focus on gathering the details; sometimes I ended up with 80 pages of research for a 1,000-word piece.

While your story that made national headlines was an exclusive interview with convicted wife-murderer Craig Rabinowitz, you produced a host of amazing pieces at PW that still make for captivating reading today, from your minute-by-minute deconstruction of a family’s tragic van crash to your trio of biographies of everyday

people you randomly selected, literally, by stabbing a finger into the phone book. Actually, you just mentioned two of my favorites. The best thing about working at PW was the incredible freedom I had to do long-form journalism; where else could I have written 6,000 words on a van accident? I haven’t stayed in touch with any subjects, but I think of them once in a while—especially the woman who was featured the first time I stabbed my finger into the phone book.

She had such an indomitable spirit.

And there was a story that never came to fruition, but it was just as well. I wanted to do a piece on mobster “Skinny Joey” Merlino when he was at the height of his power. So I found out where their clubhouse was, around 9th and Catherine, and went down there one afternoon. It was weirdly vacant, with the only person in sight a school crossing guard. She approached me and asked if I needed help. I said, “I’m looking for the clubhouse.” She gave me a terse, knowing nod and scurried off. I stood on the corner for about five minutes; no one came or went. Suddenly there was the lightest tap on my shoulder, and I whipped around to see Skinny Joey himself, his face a few inches from mine. He was like a cat—I hadn’t heard one step of his approach.

He said, “I hear you’re looking for me?”

So I introduced myself, and he invited me back to the clubhouse. It was like Central Casting’s idea of what a mafia clubhouse should look like: posters from The Godfather on the walls, Virgin Mary statues and other Catholic paraphernalia on the window sills. They were all drinking coffee and playing cards. They called me “sweetheart” and pulled out my chair for me. The whole thing was bizarre and incredibly creepy.

I also loved writing about Philly’s political figures and talking heads, like Chris Matthews and Jerry Mondesire. Where else can you find such charismatic sleaze?

So what prompted you to move from telling the current stories of living people’s lives to unearthing the long-lost secrets of dead people’s lives? It was sort of a fortuitous accident. My grandmother told me a story: Her mother and her aunt emigrated from Slovenia to the United States in 1905. One weekend, the sister went to Chicago and was never heard from again.

I was always intrigued and haunted by this bit of family lore, and I began looking into what was happening in Chicago in 1905.

I came across an article about Marshall Field Jr., the son of the department store scion, getting shot at a lavish brothel. I forgot all about my missing ancestor—as awful as that sounds—and became obsessed with this brothel, the Everleigh Club, and its proprietors, two enigmatic sisters named Minna and Ada Everleigh. That was the genesis of my first book, Sin in the Second City, and I’ve been focusing on history ever since.

What are you working on next?

Your guess is as good as mine! Forbes’ first 30 Under 30 Summit kicks off with a huge Piazza show, featuring locals OCD: Moosh and Twist.

hiladelphia’s a millennial city. OK, fine—that’s popular hyperbole that gets tossed out like candy, but it really does seem true: The youngbloods of the Illadelph are drawing huge events by the handful. It’s a major selling point in the campaign to host the 2016 Democratic National Convention here; it’s probably why Jay Z debuted Made in America on the Parkway. Forbes magazine’s editor, Randall Lane, says it’s why he’s bringing its inaugural 30 Under 30 Summit to Philly this week, drawing entrepreneurs like the folks behind Tinder, Uber, Snapchat and Facebook and the magazine’s 1,000-plus specially-selected invitees. The four-day fest, which begins Sunday, is being kicked off by the Under 30 Music Festival in celebration of the magazine’s “30 Under 30” list—which, according to Lane, has become one of the biggest things his publication does.

“When we announce it every year,” he claims, “Twitter breaks, basically.”

The Under 30 concert extravaganza is part of Global Citizen Nights, an ongoing manifestation of the Global Poverty Project, which seeks to end extreme poverty by 2030—a slightly bizarre circumstance, in a way, because Forbes’ list celebrates 20-something billionaires. Still, visiting the Global Citizen website and “sending a Tweet, signing a petition or watching a related video” is how people “will learn about four of the key issues in the fight to end poverty: water and sanitation, vaccines, Ebola and youth rights,” trumpets its press release. And that’s also how ordinary folk—through midnight this Thursday, Oct. 16—can potentially obtain a ticket to the Piazza-anchored festival, which touts headliner Afrojack, Wiz Khalifa, LP and OCD: Moosh and Twist on the bill.

(Twist) are local rookies of sorts who specialize in hook and popfriendly hip-hop that may be the perfect blend of genres for the children digging on Macklemore or Hoodie Allen, their “All That I Know” guest. It’s not hard hop-hop, but it’s not that soft, either.

They started with YouTube videos while in high school at Haverford and Friends Select, and a few mixtapes and an EP later, they’re veterans in a game that gets younger by the minute.

“Kids are on YouTube all day, and we have almost 60,000 subscribers, so it’s like our own little TV station,” Twist explains, as Lane nods in agreement. The rappers are toying with the idea of signing to a label, but they’re not so sure it’s necessary as indie artists with a strong supportive team behind them.

“That’s what’s cool about the Under 30s,’ says Lane. “That wasn’t an option 20 or 10 years ago. It’s a new paradigm.” And it’s a sensibility that corporate overlords are fascinated by. “I didn’t even have the Internet in college,” Lane admits. “They think differently. It’s why we’re interested in them.”

“Technology’s definitely helped out a lot,” says Twist, as he and Moosh tick off the list of show-opening slots they’ve booked by simply having a rabid Internet following. They convinced Mac Miller to give ‘em a chance with a simple “Yo, we got this following, can we hop this show for free?”

Though fresh into their 20s, the pair are fully aware that younger “kids” are nipping at their heels. “So much has changed in the last three, four years, it’s ridiculous,” Moosh says. “Kids are getting younger and younger,” Twist chimes in, perhaps not even fully realizing the simplistic but profundity of his words.

hen the lights go down on the 23rd annual Philadelphia Film Festival this week, it’ll reveal an eclectic lineup curated as carefully as any museum exhibit (including a track inspired by PAFA’s current David Lynch: The Unified Field, running through early January 2015).

But many of the centerpiece movies play with expectations within their genres, and from worldwide festival favorites to a spotlight on local talent, there are so many promising options that it’s tricky to narrow things down. We’re here to help, with a cheat sheet to the best of the Philadelphia Film Society’s 2014 cinema summit.

A Little Drama Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance This fever-dream flick stars Michael Keaton as an actor staging a play he hopes will overshadow that big superhero role he took once upon a time. It’s a daring piece of meta that promises to be a psychedelic trip into the mind of the has-been actor. Vicious, deeply awkward, masterfully visual and a little confounding, it’s just what we go to the movies for. Thurs., Oct 16 (Sold out).

Also try: Clouds of Sils Maria, in which Juliette Binoche plays a thespian asked to revisit the play that made her famous at 18—in the role of the older woman. Sun., Oct. 19 and Wed., Oct. 22.

The Duke of Burgundy Already being hailed as a masterpiece, The Duke of Burgundy devotes itself to the complex BDSM relationship between an aristocratic lady and her maid. The intense psychology and dreamlike visuals merge seamlessly in this hyperstylized romance that’s wrenching and intimate by turns. Sat., Oct. 18 and Sun., Oct. 26.

Also try: Leland Orser and Mary Elizabeth Winstead in Faults, a battle-of-wills flick in which a cult deprogrammer runs up against a young woman whose case might crack him.

Imperial Dreams John Boyega, who lit up the screen in Attack the Block, is front and center in Imperial Dreams, playing Bambi, an ex-con determined to become a writer and support his son. His attempts to go straight amid red tape, police harassment and money troubles form the spine of this character piece. Wed., Oct. 22 and Thurs., Oct. 23 (Sold out).

Also try: Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter, a meta parable about an office worker’s quest to find the abandoned briefcase full of cash from Fargo, is a snowy, well-deserved star vehicle for the magnetic Rinko Kikuchi. Fri., Oct. 24 and Sat., Oct. 25.

52 Tuesdays Director Sophie Hyde crafted this realistically messy, heartfelt story in real time, as a 16-year-old deals with her mother’s gender transition during Tuesday-night visits filmed over a year. It’s strange to have a trend using such a painstaking technique, but 52 Tuesdays makes an accidental companion to Boyhood, examining a single year under a sympathetic lens.

Director Ruben Östlund almost gleefully explores the minutiae of the fallout.

In Praise of Meat

Sometimes, we go through phases. We experiment. Then, we figure out what we really like.

H

e stood over me and looked down, holding eye contact. “Would you like?” he offered. There was no need to ask; I couldn’t resist, and quickly nodded my head.

His hands worked at it until it began to flop over. “Please,” he said, gesturing for me to grab hold of it and help him out.

There it was, larger than I expected, fleshy and glistening. I licked my lips and wondered if I could really down the whole thing. After all, it had been years since the last time. Then again, I knew what I’d signed on for today when I walked in the door.

No more dillydallying. It was time.

When I finally put it in my mouth, I was grateful. As soon as that flank steak, barely cooked and rare to the point of carnivorous perfection, hit my tongue, I knew I was doing the right thing. It felt so—natural. Which was odd, considering that I’d spent the last several years as a vegetarian.

I hadn’t particularly expected to find myself dining at Chima, the Brazilian steakhouse in Center City. Then again, is there a better place to kick off eating meat again than an all-you-caneat steakhouse? It wasn’t just the food, either: I felt like Caligula as the waiters came to my table again and again, carving off slices of various steaks, catering to my every need. The warm service was, on some level, as appealing as the meat cuts themselves.

They even had a fully decked-out salad bar in case I should choose to go back to greens. After the first few slices, though, that no longer even felt like an option that was on the table.

My cheeks tight with carnivorous savor, I realized that, while I wasn’t sure how I’d ever maintained my past vegetarianism, I was sure of one thing: I was very glad indeed that I was a vegetarian no longer.

According to a 2012 Gallup poll, only five percent of Americans consider themselves vegetarians. This number has remained stable for over a decade.

Now, remember: Vegetarians shouldn’t be confused with vegans, who eschew animal products of any sort, including eggs and cheese. The broader range of self-identifying vegetarians includes people who do use or consume various animalderived goods; some even eat things like chicken broth. They just don’t eat meat—ground, filleted or otherwise.

Since vegetarianism is really self-defined by individuals, it’s impossible to be much more definitive than that. During my vegetarian phase, I ate dairy products and eggs—just no meat whatsoever, including poultry and fish as well as beef. This diet is known as lacto-ovo vegetarianism; it’s one of the common variations along with pescetarianism, which allows for eating fish but no other meats.

The vegans, meanwhile—who make up less than 2 percent of the American population—are the group that most omnivores dread having to invite to parties. While vegan cream cheese is certainly delicious, the strictness of the diet does often make socializing together a challenge; go ahead, try to find a cupcake in a mainstream restaurant that doesn’t have actual cream or milk in it.

I admire strict vegans’ convictions, even as I find too often they come across much like some ex-smokers, ever determined to convince themselves they’re happier now by vehemently proselytizing their own life choices. Me, I think the world would be better off with more bacon and less smugness.

In any case, we talk about veganism in American society a lot more than we practice it. The diet’s high profile seems like

an outgrowth of consumers’ curiosity about a novel lifestyle— not unlike the impulse that brought me to vegetarianism in the first place. I remember I quit meat in order to get thin, rationalizing that it was better for my heart anyway as an afterthought.

Animal cruelty never really factored into my decision; to this day, I still feel uncomfortable with the conditions in slaughterhouses, but not uncomfortable enough to forgo meat. (Sorry, PETA.) Vegetarianism can be well balanced nutritionally if you really work at it diligently. I was not diligent; I ate mostly pizza.

Still, despite my being a lazy vegetarian, I felt healthier.

As Americans, we’re bombarded with organic this, vegan that, gluten-free whatever. Our American obsession with clever marketing ploys disguised as “wellness” gets us to do all sorts of irrational things. For me, it meant thinking I was healthy just because I ate pizzas instead of pork loins.

This, of course, was not true.

A comprehensive National Institutes of Health study in 1999 demonstrated that, while a meat-heavy diet isn’t as healthy as vegetarianism, vegetarianism or veganism isn’t as healthy as eating fish and eggs. “Heart disease,” the study says, “was 20 percent lower in occasional meat eaters, 34 percent lower in people who ate fish but not meat, 34 percent lower in lactoovo vegetarians, and 26 percent lower in vegans.”

In other words, the heart-healthiest diet around is one that shies away from fattier meats like pork and beef and focuses instead on leaner meats or just fish, eggs and dairy products.

And it showed no differences between vegetarians and nonvegetarians regarding other life-threatening illnesses like cancers or cerebrovascular disease.

So the healthiest diet ought to be the one that we humans evolved with: commonsense omnivorousness. The problem is, in today’s era of industrialized agriculture, we have much more fat, sugar and salt available to us cheaply on a daily basis. It’s a system that keeps us well fed and sedentary.

I’ve found upon returning to meat that I feel better, I look better—I am physically better. But I’m not overdoing it. If you eat pig fat every single day, you’re likely to have high cholesterol. If you eat nothing but vegetables and grains all day, you’re likely to be protein-deficient. If you don’t eat meat at all and don’t try to find other sources of important minerals, you’re likely to be iron deficient. As with all things, these diets are all about proper balance.

I know, I know. You can get your iron in so-called “leafy greens,” but let’s get serious here: I eat kale only because I know it’s good for me. I don’t insist, mouthful of bitter weeds with my grin best described as shit-eating, that kale is delicious. I mean, really. Give me a fucking break. 

thing that connects females throughout all of history in an almost magical way. But curiosity is not enough reason to create new humans for whom I am entirely responsible for multiple decades.

I know an increasing number of really rad parents, people who were cool before having kids and stayed that way after.

They’re smart, interesting and have great relationships with their children. They have a variety of jobs, hobbies and opinions. Parenting, for them, is one of the most fulfilling things they’ll ever do. Watching them juggle their obligations while keeping their individual lives intact is amazing. And while their kids are fun to play with, there’s no part of me that longs to have my own.

Maybe one day I’ll look back with sadness, regretting the lack of faith in my potential as a mother, missing having a person whose existence gives me purpose. But it’s not likely; I really like my life exactly as it is. And that doesn’t take away anything from anyone else who has a different experience, a different calling, a different life. What matters is that we have the choice. 

s a very small girl, I wanted to have a lot of kids. Specifically, I planned to have 50 at one time, then 50 a couple years later. This speaks to my penchant for over-achieving as much as my ignorance on procreation at that point. I also couldn’t wait to be an adult, a state that I understood as being age 23. I couldn’t wait to finally know how everything worked, to be able to stay up late all the time and marry Jordan Knight. Little did I know how wrong that all was.

This started to become apparent slowly, realizing adults were not all the same, and some were not privy to all the answers. I was about seven when my friend Sean’s mom said something that I knew was factually untrue. She’s an adult, but she’s ... wrong. How can that be? You don’t just have all the information bestowed upon you magically at some point? Is there not a collective grown-up consciousness?

A couple years later, I noticed that not only do some adults have their shit together way better than others, but also that there were a number of ways of living. In my small hometown, there were many adults who had boring-sounding jobs and hobbies, and usually, lots of kids. But then there was my aunt who lived in a city, had an awesome job, a rad husband and a house filled with artsy things. They went to concerts all the time and had two dogs, a cat and no kids. I wanted to be like her.

Around the age of 10, I realized I didn’t want to have kids.

When this came up, some adults chuckled patronizingly and told me I’d change my mind, like some kind of worldweary, time-traveling wizard. They might also add that not having children was the selfish choice. That was confusing, even then. How was procreating an altruistic act, especially if you wanted to do it? There were so many parents who forced their kids to follow a specific path or to be good at some sport or art, it was obvious that, for those people, having children was predominately about personal legacy, not about making the world better. And what was selfish about acknowledging you didn’t have the interest or resources required to be a good mom or dad? Wouldn’t that be the more responsible option? Given that breeding is about the worst thing an individual can do to the environment, I fail to see their argument.

Recently, I met a woman in her 50s at a concert. She was fun to talk to, very interested in art, adventure and trying new things. She talked about her kids, now grownups themselves. “They are really awesome people,” she told me, and insisted she didn’t regret having them. “That said, if I had really thought it was an option back in my day, I wouldn’t have had them. There wasn’t really a choice; it’s just what you did.”

If she could go back, she’d pick freedom, the disposable income and the freedom to contribute to the lives of young people in some other way, perhaps as a coach or teacher.

To this day, when people find out I don’t want to have kids, they assume it’s because I don’t want to be pregnant.

They helpfully remind me about the existence of adoption.

But while fear of how childbirth affects the body is a perfectly valid reason not to do it, that’s not the real problem for me. In fact, I’m curious about pregnancy, an experience that’s unlike anything else on our plane of existence, some-

Four years ago, I met a man on a “married but looking” website. We exchanged fantasies, which included wanting to have threesomes and a D/s relationship. He was 19 years my senior. I was 42 at the time. For three years, we met twice a week for drinks or sex. The sex was amazing. We had several threesomes. One year ago, we separated from our spouses. We have lived together now for four months. It isn’t what I imagined: the merging of kids and dogs, a D/s relationship turning vanilla. And due to some health issues, he can perform only once a week. And now the real problem: His desire to bring another woman into our relationship borders on obsession. He searches daily on several websites for that “elusive woman” to become “our friend and lover.”

The problem is that I am questioning whether I want another woman in our life. Since he is much older than most men on these sites, women tend to pass him over. I’m afraid that if he finds someone, my jealousy—which I work very hard to hide from him—will break us up. I am almost getting obsessed myself, checking the sites and his chats constantly. What should I do?

Just Wants To Be Monogamous Which conversation will be more difficult: A. After a frustrating and protracted search, your boyfriend finally manages to find a woman who’s interested in being your “friend and lover.” At that point, you tell him you’re no longer interested in a third, regular or otherwise, and he needn’t have bothered.

B. You tell your boyfriend today—now—that you’re not interested in bringing a third into the relationship.

It’s the same conversation either way: You’re gonna have to tell him you’re not interested. He may be too old for the women on the websites he’s haunting now, but sooner or later, either he’ll find his way to a website where his age isn’t an issue, or a bi woman into older men will stumble over one of the ads he already has up. So you’re going to have to tell him the truth, JWTBM; the only question is when.

I would argue that having the conversation now would be preferable to having it after he’s set up a date for drinks with a potential third. He may be disappointed to learn that you’re not interested in a third anymore, but he’s less likely to be breakup-level angry/hurt if you didn’t stand there silently while he wasted time searching for a third.

And who knows? An honest and open conversation about the state of your relationship—including the fact that you’re dissatisfied with the once-a-week routine and the waning of D/s—may ignite an interest in a third. Would you feel differently about a third if it turned out she wasn’t for him, but for you? He’s getting older, he has health issues, and he may want someone else around so that you won’t leave him to get your needs met. It’s also possible that a third would reignite the D/s dynamics that you miss. D/s is performance, it’s play, and nothing invigorates a pair of performers quite like a new audience.

I’m not telling you that you have to agree to the third—if it’s monogamy you want, then it’s monogamy you should ask for—but keep your mind, your options and those lines of communication all open.

Honest Accidentally Poly Person, Yep Being poly means being open to or being in more than one romantic relationship—concurrent committed relationships—and what you’ve described sounds pretty poly to me. Perhaps it’s the triad designation that makes your partner uncomfortable.

That particular label implies that you’re all equal partners—not just equally attracted to each other and in love with each other (which three people rarely are), but equals on the emotional, social and financial fronts as well, i.e., equally obligated to one another. Your partner may regard his best friend as fun to have around, but not an equal partner, and not someone he is responsible to/for in the same way you two are responsible for each other.

Or maybe your partner regards his best friend as his boyfriend, not yours, and while he’s happy to share his boyfriend with you sexually, he’s not into the idea that you might be in love with his boyfriend and vice versa, so the “triad” label irks him.

Or maybe your partner is one of those people who believes that poly folks are deranged sex maniacs, and whatever he’s doing can’t be poly because he’s not a deranged sex maniac, which makes him more comfortable with cognitive dissonance than the “triad” label.

I’m a married 28-year-old male. My partner and I are conflicted over the level of openness in our relationship. She describes herself as “postmononormative.” I consider myself GGG. While I know that she wants me to be her life companion, she has expressed a need for novel experiences that may not include me. While I accept that there is no essential link between erotic love and long-term partnership, I reject the polyamorous notion that love is limitless—when she has misinterpreted conversations and transgressed boundaries, it has always coincided with the neglect of our own relationship. Or should I focus on cultivating shared experiences with my partner?

Non-Normative Problems I don’t think retaliatory polyamory is healthy or sustainable. (“I don’t want to have other partners, but if you’re going to have other partners, then so am I! Let’s see how you like it!”) And while you can focus on cultivating shared erotic experiences, NNP, your partner has made it clear that she needs—and intends to have—novel experiences that don’t include you. And while her transgressions may mean the boundaries you’ve set aren’t explicit or generous enough, NNP, it’s likelier that your partner gets off on transgression. Some people do.

I think you’re confused, and your confusion stems from the fact that your partner is negotiating with you about her nonnegotiable terms. She’s going to do what she wants whether you like it or not, and she’s going to hide behind “post-mononormative” labels and claims that conversations were misinterpreted if that’s what it takes. Accept her terms or divorce her ass, but stop deluding yourself. 
