An unforgettable Event: Amanda Shaw (left) and Clifford Samuel in Actors Touring Company’s arresting The Events.
WHAT’S HAPPENING — BEFORE IT HAPPENS ... STAGE
The Events
On July 22, 2011, Anders Behring Breivik put on a homemade police uniform, brandished fake identification and gained access to a summer camp on an island near Oslo, Norway. What he did next is beyond comprehension: He opened fire and took 69 human lives—including many children—and wounded another 110, 55 of whom were deemed seriously injured. He was a right-wing radical who was targeting the Labour Party; the camp was organized by the AUF, the youth division of the Norwegian ruling party. Obviously, here in America, we’ve seen way too many smaller versions of this tragedy—among them Columbine, Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech. These incidents can be life-changing and devastating catastrophes to live through, moments after which those left to pick up the pieces become different people. This is the raw material for The Events, a 12-performance run of the Edinburgh Fringeoriginated play that explores these questions and more, but mostly, the main one: Why do they happen? Performed by the Actors Touring Company, each show is dynamic in its own way, thanks to its inclusion of a different regional choir for every staging and post-play discussions on gun violence and its consequences. Loaning a unique resonance is the fact that in David Greig’s drama, it’s the choir that gets massacred. The Events focuses on Claire, a church minister and choral director in some one-horse burg, who survives the murderous rampage but is obviously, and rightly, left affected by it and finds herself obsessed with understanding its impetus, why the attacker embraced such violence. We pore though details and biographies; we hunt for the potential seed or cause for what makes a person so homicidal that they feel the need to target strangers and devastate entire communities. Then, there’s the almighty challenge: Can we forgive? Without checking gun violence, without creating art about it, we stand to continue reeling in shock and disgust at these mass shootings. It’s time we all took part in powerful dialogues to end it. Here’s your chance. // BILL CHENEVERT Tues., Oct. 7 through Sun., Oct. 19. Various times. $20-$35. When you hear the term “found footage,” what comes to mind? Slow, shitty horror movies released over the last five years, chock full of quick instances where “Oh, shit: What was that?” is the average watcher’s response? Welp, if that’s all you know about it, prepare for something brand new. Because for the last 10 years, the Found Footage Festival has been hitting Johnny Brenda’s in Fishtown—and even touring some—presenting actual filmed footage found by comedians Nick Prueher and Joe Pickett in offbeat places, weird stuff that was made to be recorded on—and stay—on VHS. Some examples from past fests and from Found Footage’s website: an actual, and very creepy, commercial for a video explaining how to seduce women through hypnosis. In the commercial, a young man tells his target, “You’re hornier than you’ve ever been in your whole life”—and it works! Another clip, a 1997 instructional video, teaches newcomers to the web how to have cyber-sex and mastering “the art of one-handed typing.” In that video, a topless woman writes, “I’m very horny and I’m looking for some good cyber-sex,” then finds a mate. See? Happy endings abound. It’s not all ‘90s sex tutorials, though: In one video, FFF finds a Coke bottle-lensed lady attempting to give a presentation in which a rabbit would play a harpsichord when it doesn’t want to. Anyway, you can spend hours watching these vintage videos online, or you can join Prueher and Pickett as they host a night showcasing these very odd, very real videos and perform some very funny stand-up. Go with the latter. // RANDY LOBASSO

Putty Dance Project: Going, Wanting in the Age of the Selfie Putty Dance Company, helmed by award-winning former Philadanco member Lauren Putty White, is asking some essentially 2014 questions: Why do we take so many pictures of ourselves? Are we genuinely enriching our lives by sharing our daily minutiae with our 4,000 best digital friends? Going, Wanting in the Age of the Selfie is a multimedia, multiply artistic experience that demands from its audience a deeper exploration of our digital landscape: “Put down your smartphone for 70 minutes to consider ... where is our world going? What do I want out of life? How does technology play a role?” Via original modern choreography by Putty White, futuristic jazz and live instrumentation, plus a mix of digital media and poetic monologues, Going, Wanting’s cast will explore the way we’re wired as humans. Brent White, Putty White’s trombonist husband, composed the score, and he’ll get help on stage from Craig Ebner on guitar. Actor Christina May will provide provocative narration, while Putty White— joined by fellow dancers Brenda Li, Jesse Jones and Erin Burgmayer—leads attendees through a unique dance fusion that will incorporate postmodern, hip-hop and Horton techniques. Sure to be as mesmorizing as it is memorable, Going, Wanting in the Age of the Selfie’s innovative take on dance performance is a welcome interactive investigation into our digital state of affairs—which, frankly, could use a little tweaking and taming. // B.C.

Nick Swardson Nick Swardson is one of those comedians you vaguely remember from something but cannot recall exactly what. That’s likely attributable to the fact that he’s been pretty much everywhere in American pop comedy culture for the past decade, having a hand in projects like Grandma’s Boy, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Blades of Glory and Benchwarmers. Basically, he’s one spoke in the overall man-child humor wheel; Swardson’s writing and on-screen colleagues have included Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Jamie Kennedy. The Minnesotan’s Taste It tour comes just a few years after the end of his hysterical run as Terry Bernadino on Reno 911! and Seriously, Who Farted?, his first one-hour stand-up special, both on Comedy Central, and he’s sure to deliver the kind of scatological humor many enjoy and just as many eschew. Prior to that, Swardson got some fame old-school style with Party, a CD/DVD on Comedy Central Records that went platinum. (We weren’t aware that even happened still with records, comedy or no.) No matter what your views might be on the concept of bodily functions as a humor device, one thing is certain: Given that big studios like Warner Brothers, Comedy Central and Happy Madison have all continued to invest time and energy in Swardson, it’s clear that he’s got the goods to go far. The rest of us just have to keep up. // JOSH KRUGER Tues., Oct. 7, 8pm. $39.75. Merriam Theater, 250 S. Broad St. kimmelcenter.org

AUTUMN ALES, IPAS AND BREWS THAT CAN’T LOSE

Great Lakes Commodore Perry IPA In America, the IPA is a fruity, fragrant and often aggressive style of beer. Hopheads love its aggressive bitterness and ability to overwhelm all else on your palate. In England, the IPA tends to be more restrained, balanced by more pronounced malts and utilizing hop strains that are herbal rather than citrus-laden. The folks at Great Lake tend to make traditional beer styles in a traditional way, so it’s no surprise that their IPA is closer in spirit to those of England, where the IPA was born, than to their American brethren. Malts that evoke buttered biscuits keep the lightly fruity hops in check, but not so much that the tastes and aromas of a dank forest are overwhelmed. This is world class IPA; grab some at City Tap House to see what we mean.
2
Sierra Nevada Flipside Over the last few years, the folks at Sierra Nevada have released a series of red IPAs, each slightly different than the one before, and each only being released once. The most recent was their Imperial Red from last year’s Beer Camp pack. Now we’ve got Flipside Red IPA, yet another attempt to perfect the style. While the brisk aromas of pine needle and peach are not surprising, given this brewery’s experience with hoppedup beverages, what is surprising is the profoundly deep, almost smoky chocolate note that greets you with each sip. Yet this isn’t a black IPA with rich, roasty malts. It’s a red ale, with malt character that suggests caramel and pumpernickel. Hunt this down at Wishing Well, London Grill and Field House.

Hacker-Pschorr Hefe Weisse American craft brewers have surpassed the pioneering brewers in Germany, Belgium and England in a lot of ways, but we’re still playing catch up when it comes to the classic wheat ale known as hefeweizen. Born in Southern Germany, this cloudy style is still at its best when brewed in its homeland. Beers like Hacker-Pschorr’s hefe prove it: With aromas of bubble gum and banana, a gorgeous hazy orange color that almost looks chewable, and bright notes of freshly flaked wheat, orange peel and candy, this is the kind of beer that reminds you why being outdoors is better than being cooped up in a dingy tavern. Oh, and it pairs well with most food, too. Ask for it wherever Hacker-Pschorr beers are tapped.

Flying Fish Exit 4 American Trippel The folks at New Jersey’s Flying Fish Brewing Company deserve more credit than they get. From oyster stouts to wild rice double IPAs, their “Exit” series of beers have been a place to experiment with bigger, bolder tastes. The very first was Exit 4, an Americanized take on the classic Belgian tripel. Like most tripels, it’s a huge, golden beer with warming alcohol and a grassy, floral character with faint touches of banana, clove, and hard candy. Where this one surprises is in the orange-laden, juicy hops that float above it all. They’re not at IPA levels, but they’re certainly more aggressive than a beer like, say, Merry Monks. See for yourself why this NJ beer rocks at Cedar Point, City Tap House, Johnny Brenda’s and Pinocchio’s.

Horny Goat Hornycopia Are you sick of pumpkin beers yet? If not, good news: Here’s another one worth trying. Brewed out of Wisconsin, the folks at Horny Goat have created a pumpkin beer that avoids the big sweetness of many on modern pumpkin brews. It’s also not a glass full of spices, either. Sure, you get touches of cinnamon, clove and maybe some nutmeg, but these are merely highlights on the fringes. Instead, this beer features more prominent bitterness than you’d expect, with the taste of roasted pumpkins giving it a vegetal finish. If you want variety in your pumpkin beers, here’s one a little different than the others. Try it at Pumpkin Fest on October 15 at Bainbridge St. Barrel House. | ERIC SAN JUAN
Sandwich Triumph Matt & Marie’s doesn’t over-fuss their lunchy goodness. By Brian Freedman // bfreedman@philadelphiaweekly.com
T
here’s something to be said for not over-filling a sandwich. This, of course, flies in the face of so much received wisdom—more is better!—but I have recently come to believe in the beauty inherent to a more restrained sammy. The problem with an overly abundant sandwich is simple: It often becomes nearly impossible to differentiate between the flavors and textures of the constituent meats and cheeses. The result of this is a construct that delivers diminishing returns in the pleasure department the more bites that get taken. (There are exceptions to this, of course: Certain practitioners of the arts of Jewish deli come immediately to mind, as do a number of top hoagie spots. But in general, I tend to favor the slimmer ones.) Which is all to say that the Roman Cavalry sandwich at Matt & Marie’s was a treat: earthy coppa, pleasantly lactic handmade mozzarella, balsamic, olive oil, and arugula and ... that’s it. No tangle of peppers. No provolone to protect the bread from the moisture of the mozz. No prosciutto or mortadella or other meat to distract from those slices of coppa. The result was a deliciously successful sandwich, restrained and self-possessed. There is a lot to like at this 18th Street spot, from the cheery decor (lots of light wood, big windows, the menu written on butcher paper unscrolling behind the counter) to the pleasant staff. And the menu is a
rundown of dishes that make you hungry simply scanning through them. I just wish the execution was a bit more consistent. Pieta Pastrami was anchored not by the slices of pastrami—they were inexplicably flavorless, instantly forgotten once a bite was swallowed—but instead by the sweet-aromatic onions and dill pickles, both made in-house. When their bright bite hit the creamy pepperoncini aioli, sparks flew. Too bad that pastrami didn’t bring anything to the party. Neither did a side of

Falafel Italiana, whose center of gravity is a baked chick pea patty, is a solid option for vegetarians, and is sure to be a hit among the lunchtime crowd that descends on the spot from the surrounding office buildings. It could have used more character, a slightly more exotic bent to its seasoning, but it’s close to where it needs to be and should get there soon. So I have hope: Matt & Marie’s has heart, as well as a good team and a solid menu. With a few edits here and there, it should become a go-to for the midtown lunch crowd. From the looks of things, in fact, it’s nearly there already. ■

NEW ITALIAN WINES: YES, PLEASE
I
just returned from a week of pork dumplings, sauerkraut and some of the best apple strudel I’ve ever had the good fortune of devouring, much of it paired with the sort of crisp white wines that immediately bring to mind more teutonic climes. But I wasn’t in Germany or Austria. I was in Italy, in a region that wine lovers are growing ever more in love with: Alto Adige. In the world of wine, there are certain regions that strike the collective fancy of sommeliers, journalists, importers and other professionals. Alto Adige is absolutely one of those places right now. Tucked into a part of Italy that was actually part of Austria-Hungary until early in the 20th century, this beautiful wine region, while relatively small in terms of the amount of land under vine, is having a significant impact on serious American wine lists. After tasting there for a week, it’s easy to see why. As Americans have increasingly grown away from overoaked, overripe white wines and ever more fond of crisp, somewhat aromatic ones, Alto Adige is custom made for our evolving preferences: vivid whites wines produced from grape varieties like Pinot Bianco; aromatic ones from spicy,
perfumed Gewürztraminer; expressive Chardonnays; smoky Sauvignon Blancs; age-worthy Pinot Grigio and more. As for Pinot Grigio, many of the options we have in the states are in the sort of insipid, bulk-produced style that for a long time, no self-respecting wine professional would really consider. But things are changing, and nowhere more so than in Alto Adige, where they are taken very seriously. Every day there, it seemed, I tasted Pinot Grigios that made me completely rethink everything I assumed I knew about the grape. I even purchased a few, from standout producer Nals Margreid, to age for several years in my wine fridge. If you see any here, snap up several bottles: They’re great. The reds, too, are delicious. Elegant Pinot Nero; tannic, rich Lagrein; lovely Merlot; gulpable Schiava: These and others, I predict, will start to make their way onto more local wine lists. If you happen to be at a restaurant and the sommelier recommends any of these from Alto Adige—or if you see a label with Südtirol on it—follow their advice. Look for top names like Tiefenbrunner, Elena Walch, Colterenzio, Caldaro, Terlano, Nals Margreid and Abbazia di Novacella, among others. You’ll be in for a treat, I promise. / B.F.

remember trying to dance like Lykke Li does in her “Little Bit” video in the kitchen of my Brooklyn railroad apartment and feeling like I’d found a new pop heroine. This was 2007, before her debut LP, Youth Novels, hit our shores in 2008. There was something so infectious about the exuberant energy, the controlled chaos, and something deeply compelling in its artistry. Seven years later, and Li is a completely different woman. She’s grown up, and at 28, with 2011’s Wounded Rhymes and this spring’s I Never Learn added to her discography, she’s now achieved what she told NME was a themed, inter-connected trilogy: “It’s always about me and the guilt and the shame and the hurt and the pride and the confusion of being a woman.” Her latest is a devastating take on the end of a relationship, fitting since Li suffered the biggest breakup of her life and, after moving to Los Angeles, took solace in the process of recuperation and healing. In my 15 minutes on the phone with her last week, while she waited to board a plane to Denver, I feared asking her about I Never Learn’s central theme: the heart. “I kind of chose that subject matter,” she told me in her extra-soft coo of a speaking voice. “It’s your heart. How your heart feels and its wants and need and confusions and all of that. That’s like the most interesting thing we have as humans to deal with.” Though born in Sweden, this singersongwriter’s really been more of a nomad, living in Nepal, Portugal, Morocco and Bushwick before pouring out her debut record. She’s said that living in the mountains with siblings helped her develop a deep sense of imagination, but there’s still something inherently Scandinavian about her. “I haven’t lived in Sweden full-time for many years,” she says, “but I’m European.” Of her current sunny West Coast habitat, she says, “I just think it’s very mysterious in this great way. It’s very private. You can create your own universe. The weather and the air and the smell— it’s so soothing. It makes you dream. It makes you want to write and take care of yourself.” Among Li’s press materials is a peculiar diagram that illustrates the many ways in which she becomes her truest

self: Of course, musically—she’s been remixed famously by A$AP Rocky, Drake, The Magician, and Tyler the Creator, plus provided vocals for the likes of Kanye, David Lynch, Royksopp and Kleerup. There’s fashion—she was in Levi’s and H&M campaigns and is signed to Viva Modeling. She’s working in films now, too, is soon to be a part of an upcoming Terrence Malick project and has contributed songs to the soundtracks of The Fault In Our Stars, The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Blue is the Warmest Color. Instagram is very kind to this introverted artist, and one of her superfans pointed me toward her charming, inspiring feed. “I’m almost ashamed at how much I enjoy it,” Li admits of her copious posts, selfies included. “I feel like I’ve always been on the outside of modern popular culture, but I do enjoy it a lot, and I see things all the time that I think are interesting,” she says. She’s playful with it, too. Last week, she posted a selfie in which she’s donning tons of makeup, styling herself as Lady Gaga. “People say ‘That looks like Gaga.’ I wanted to give them what they really want.” Li seems to shrug off two of the things I find most appealing about her:
her style choices and her connection to movement. “I dress simple and androgynous, and I don’t think about it that much,” she replies in response to my rave review of her stark, all-black outfit at this year’s Non-Comm WPXN Fest. “I do a lot of my own clothes when I go on tour, and that’s really cool, I like picking out fabrics and drawing.” Did she ever have any dance training, I ask. “Didn’t we all?” Uh, no. “I just do it. Whatever comes natural,” Li says. “It’s pretty hard to stand still when there’s a bunch of people looking at you [on stage].” It’s on stage every night, in fact, where she experiences her most fruitful engagement as a musician. “Honestly, my favorite collaboration is every night with my band. They’re the ones that know me the best and can follow me seamlessly and push me.” Li’s quirks are what have garnered her a rabid following, though, from fans like me—and trust, she knows it. “My fans are really the best,” she adds. “I wouldn’t do it if it weren’t for the fans.” Wed., Oct. 1, 8:30pm. $32. Philadelphia- According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That’s why it’s critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make reasonable

Gone Girl (Director: David Fincher / Writer: Gillian Flynn)
A
my (Rosamund Pike) and Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) have the perfect marriage until she goes missing, and things look pretty suspicious for Nick. Then, things look pretty suspicious for everyone. David Fincher brings his sleek, grimly funny touch to the worldwide bestseller’s blend of mystery pulp and social commentary, making Gone Girl a magnetic thriller about the masks we wear and whether they hurt us or serve us right. Pike, long treading water in supporting parts, dazzles in a role she was born for: a woman made of burning intelligence and other people’s expectations. With every mannered pause and flicker of betrayal, Amy’s a compelling and formidable foe, even to herself. And Affleck gives the performance of his career as an everyguy who crumbles—or shines—in the wake of his wife’s disappearance. His naturalism, perfectly matched by Carrie Coon as his sister and Kim Dickens as the no-guff detective on the case, neatly offsets the heightened mannerisms of the inhabitants of Amy’s world. Fincher’s usual creative team (plus a script from author Gillian Flynn) builds deftly on audience expectations, with every nosy neighbor an obelisk and every media figure a cipher. And there’s plenty of delightfully dreadful friction to be mined from the story’s meta-narrative of clashing perspectives, visually echoed in every shot of magazine-perfect interiors and sugar storms (from cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth) and every dissonant strain of music (courtesy of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross). And though it’s deliberately structured to be less a whodunit than a who-arethey, Gone Girl makes quite the case for itself. It’s a pitch-black satire of modern marriage and one of the most unsettling films of the year. (Genevieve Valentine) REVIEW
Tracks
(Director: John Curran / Screenwriter: Marion Nelson)
I
n 1977, Robyn Davidson (Mia Wasikowska) took a nine-month journey across the Australian outback with four camels, one dog and a dream of being alone. But no one’s an island, and sponsor National Geographic sent photographer Rick Smolan (Adam Driver). Director John Curran brings that path to life with Tracks, which tries to balance the understatement Davidson’s memoir with the majesty of the subject. The movie’s at its thematic best when examining the negotiations Robyn makes between solitude and society. Robyn seeks to be alone in the vast wilderness, but Marion Nelson’s script slyly illuminates the ways in which other people shape her, whether the childhood specter of her father, friendly homesteaders and even members of aboriginal communities—though here, the goofy hubris of Smolan’s invasive photography feels like an unresolved note for Robyn’s ideas of boundaries and respect. But deep in the desert, when Robyn’s struggling to find any comfort in isolation, the movie’s character work is at its most real. Visually, of course, it’s best when the desert takes over. Mandy Walker’s camera drinks equally of the red clay, the twisted silhouettes of trees against the cloudless sky, and Wasikowska, whose performance makes the most of Robyn’s reserve, turning her lonely moments into a silent-film performance of careful depth that effortlessly shifts from peevishness to peace. Her rapport with her dog and camels makes their regular peril even more tense, as every waterless kilometer seems to be asking reasons that Robyn’s voiceover carefully avoids giving, which is both refreshing and leaves Robyn an unknown quantity. But Tracks is, above all else, a cinematically marvelous love letter to the desert, and hardly needs reasons for walking into the sand. (G.V.)
Under suspicion: Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) pleads for his wife’s return as her parents (Lisa Barnes and David Clennon) look on in Gone Girl.

Keeping Up Appearances Gone Girl’s marketing has become a conversation with the movie as much as advertising for it. By Genevieve Valentine // feedback@philadelphiaweekly.com
A
few months before Gone Girl hit theaters, Amy Dunne was on Pinterest. The novel it’s adapted from is a runaway bestseller, based on its ruthless examination of a marriage that shifts into the sort of psychological horror story where you look into the mirror and realize the monster you see is either the one person who knows you best, or it’s been you all along. And the movie embraces the premise, from the idea of marriage as inherently toxic to everyone’s layperson deductive skills in an era where Law & Order is practically injected into the water supply. The movie is also sharply aware of the visual trappings that accompany the marriage of a woman consciously striving for the perfect narrative and a man unconsciously reaching for the opposite. Given director David Fincher, it’s no surprise the production and costume design (by Fincher veterans Donald Graham Burt and Trish Summerville) is telling the story beneath the story. And this goes beyond the pitch-perfect disparity between young Nick’s H&M wardrobe of rumpled unconcern and young Amy’s moneyed, studied mimicry of it in her attempt to be the Cool Girl; it’s more than the New York loft that looks like an Apartment Therapy post set against the Missouri home pulled from the pages of Better Homes & Gardens. This is a story in which every prop, set, costume and board game is a clue to a mystery much more visceral than it seems, and every detail is a deliberate message. Here, a necktie is a homing beacon, and one of the biggest chills of the movie comes from a shot of Amy in a filmy baby-blue peignoir. However, it’s fascinating to follow marketing for a movie so ruthlessly cynical about the media and the stories it constructs for its own ends. Its leads are varying shades of awful, but in a movie otherwise slow to suggest neat conclusions, Gone Girl is fairly certain some monsters need the TV screen and a stack of crime novels to fully reveal them-
selves. And so far, its marketing has embraced the meta of stories being constructed. It’s a tone perfectly set by early editorial photos for Entertainment Weekly. In the first, shot by Fincher himself, Ben Affleck lies on a steel morgue table, curled contentedly around a dead Rosamund Pike—the lovely corpse trope combined with the performative courtship of Yoko Ono and John Lennon’s famous Rolling Stone cover. (He’s in jeans and a t-shirt; she’s in sheer couture.) The second cover’s a wedding photo, an apocryphal addendum to the movie. Amy’s laughing delightedly in bridal armor, while behind her, Nick watches with the expression of a man over his head who can’t yet explain why. Both are tone-perfect play-alongs for a movie that gleefully loathes the inevitability of playing to the camera. (The NYFF took things further—nothing like a film that skewers the slick self-branding awareness of the modern age, sponsored by Gucci.) But there’s an unmistakable enthusiasm for inhabiting the part that means Gone Girl’s marketing has become a conversation with the movie as much as advertising for it. (The film’s website is a “news site” for the search effort FindAmazingAmy.com.) And Amy Dunne’s Pinterest boards are, like Amy, designed to be perfect at first glance and sinister the more you know of the story. The photos of rich desserts and the homemade jam pinned to “Call Me Missouri” are character grace notes designed to draw you into the secret. It’s marketing by way of reminding you that everything about the modern identity is marketing. Early on, Amy writes personality quizzes; the Pin board for them neatly drives home the idea that everyone’s a collection of things we’re told, and the slightest detail can determine who you really are. And from the first Pinterest board to the last pointy collar atop a Wednesday Addams shift dress, it’s a warning to all who enter: Here, there be monsters.

The Art of Moving On
Florcy Morisset isn’t closing her Old City gallery, Vivant Art Collection, for the reasons you suspect. By Sheena Lester // slester@philadelphiaweekly.com
F
lorcy Morisset is glowing. Whether speaking warmly with a visiting painter, arranging for transport of his framed masterworks from Vivant Art Collection, her cozy Old City outpost, or sharing insight and advice with a photographer just passing through, Morisset’s face, like her spirit, is alit with purpose and possibility. This is a woman on point and on a mission. A native New Yorker who transplanted to open her 2nd Street gallery in 2007 during dire economic times, Morisset, 34, has been toiling away in her second semester of a dual master’s program in which she’ll be earning her MBA from Johns Hopkins and a Masters in art and design leadership from Maryland Institute of Contemporary Art. It’s because of those commitments— which she’s maintained by commuting daily—that she’s decided to close shop at Vivant, where she’s been specializing in art from Haiti, her familial homeland, as well as works from Cuba, Mexico and nations in South America and Africa. Once word had spread that Vivant was closing its doors and Morisset shifting its focus online and toward consultancy projects, local black arts circles started buzzing like bees, her devotees worried that the arts ambassador had somehow been driven away from Philly by lackluster sales and a stale, inactive local populace. Thankfully, those concerns are for naught. After seven successful years as a gallery owner, Morriset just wants to concentrate on her next phase. “I didn’t realize how aggressive I was,” she told PW, “and I think that’s been important for me to be here. I opened, then the art bubble popped—in the middle of a recession. It’s one thing to say I survived that, but it’s another to say I conquered it.” Well, she did. And Vivant Art Collection’s not going out with a whimper, either. The gallery’s long kiss goodnight—which begins tonight with a martini reception hosted by Mike Jerrick and Dyana Williams—is a festive five-day affair that includes its final First Friday art crawl and soiree, a champagne art auction on Saturday and Sunday’s jazz and mimosas farewell send-off. PW: Seven years. That’s a great run. FLORCY MORISSET: Part of forecasting is looking into the future. This is it for me. I’m 34; I opened the gallery when I was 27. I asked myself, ‘At 44, am I going to want to be doing this, and am I going to enjoy the pace it’s going now?’ I said probably not. I am a big dreamer, with big ideas—everything I do is big, grand and opulent , with huge collaborators. I feel like part of it is I’ve grown out of this space, but I also feel like I wanted to make sure I had all the skills I need so that when I get to 44, I’ll be happy, and I’ll be happy with where I am in my career. [Vivant] is great, and I love it. But this is not the end-all be-all. I really think of art as this big powerful thing. It can’t be contained by four small walls. And I really want to take it on a larger scale. And it wasn’t that people here weren’t interested in the work you amassed? Sometimes what you set out to get is not what you get—you get something better, because God always has something in mind. Sometimes we say, ‘I want to get this’ or ‘I want to hit this financial mark.’ You don’t think about meeting the mayor or meeting the president or ‘I want to change my community doing this business.’ Your hard goals are your numbers, but it’s the other stuff that really matters. And that’s why when you call on people, they respond—because they understand the other stuff that’s bigger than the financial, tangible goals you’ve set for yourself.
Eyes on the prize: Says Florcy Morisset of her next phase: “I want to do big things. I want to touch more people.” (Photo by J.R. Blackwell)
What have been some of your favorite memories at Vivant— events or sales that were particularly exciting? I think my most memorable sale was in the first three months of the gallery. I didn’t really have to network; it used to kick up on First Friday. This woman came in who was staying at a hotel, and she saw a piece she said she liked a lot. It was like $2,000—and she said, ‘I like that one, too,’ and that one was like $1,000. She said, ‘Yeah, I’ll take both. Send this one to Miami, and send this one to my other home in Colorado.” That moment, I knew I was in the right business. That said to me there was a place for Haitian art, and that was so edifying at the beginning. My fifth anniversary was a huge one. I had Danny Simmons down, and we had a big panel discussion. We brought him down to the African American Museum, and it was packed so tight. We were having conversations on the role of artists, art gallery owners and museums and talking how that equal system works. I thought that was very powerful because you had a lot of creatives, artists and black intellectuals in the room; it mattered in a big way. Those gatherings are such feasts for the spirit. My one great one is not even inside these walls. I curated an event for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and we had Rich Medina, and we opened up all of the museum. We had an Afrobeat dance party, with art-making in one room, poetry in another. It was very interactive, and it was like 1,500 brown folks just rocking out on music. That, to me, is exciting. My business is not defined by these four walls or by brick and mortar, period. What do you think about the city’s black arts scene overall? What kind of support have you gotten over your duration here? That’s a good question. Historically, Old City used to have a lot of black people, and with the arts coming into fashion, it bumped up the real estate, and they were bumped out. There were some really great galleries here—October Gallery, Mercer.
They email me, saying ‘Good job, Flor.” There’s not competition among us; it’s a family. And I’ve been carrying this torch for seven years. I love First Friday because it’s a diverse crowd. I think that when you think of branding, branding is important. A lot of times, people thought that it was a party and didn’t know it was an art gallery crawl, so there was a lot of education there; I did not get the turnouts, in terms of huge black audiences, that used to come down. So, I don’t want a huge First Friday audience; I don’t want a huge, black First Friday audience. When I have other events throughout the month, that is my primary clientele. My majority, in terms of numbers, is African Americans because that’s my network. When I look at my sales book, it’s African Americans. So, I can say yes, I’ve gotten support. When I do have events, they come out and support us, and people pay to rent my space to host events. I can’t discount that: They may not have purchased the art, but they rented the gallery or they came out or they gave me an opportunity somewhere else. Is there a big black arts community in Philadelphia? No. But have I been successful? I’m not closing because I didn’t make money. What do you think the future holds after your schooling? Philly is kind of home. I’ve been here for eight years. My plans are short, my years are short. Right now, I have two years planned, and that is Johns Hopkins and MICA. I’m trying to be as openminded as possible about what is in store, because I have looked at this from my perspective for so many years that I need a different set of lenses. The arts world is huge. You can work in a museum, art department, university, art gallery. You can work with an artist; you can work in a design firm. Art is huge. I don’t know if I’ve decided yet. I do know one thing: I want to do big things. I want to do institutional work. I want to touch more people. Wed, Oct. 1-Sun., Oct. 5. Various times. Vivant Art Collection, 60 N. Second St. 310.612.4646. vivant7thanniversary.com

ogy, we debate whether to stay with the easy jobs that don’t pay super well, the prestigious careers that other people want for us or the personally rewarding but labor-intensive work. We look at short-term gigs with big paydays and compare them to stable positions that offer a solid retirement plan. As for Travis and me, we’re all good now; with time and lots of talk, we healed from the rift. Whenever we get the chance, we spend hours catching up. The reality is we’ll never go back to our original dynamic, or to seeing each other every day. But that doesn’t negate the fact that I earned security clearance in his building. I still have more access than most, even if my visits are brief. Luckily, I can look back on our previous residency period fondly—whereas there are certainly some former tenants of my building whom I wish had never gotten a lease in the first place. Some of them should have been stopped by a uniformed guard at the front door. But even those people serve a function. I’m much better now at screening potential occupants; I have a better idea of what questions really matter and which ones don’t. That’s a good thing. I’ve spent too much effort constructing the interior to let just anyone wander around unsupervised—or to give up and lock everyone out.
The University of Pennsylvania is seeking volunteers, ages 18 to 65, for a research study on the effects of stopping smoking for 24 hours on brain performance. You will receive brief counseling and then have a practice quit attempt. Eligible participants will receive compensation for time and travel as well as free smoking cessation treatment, if desired.

sharing meals and chores, hosting parties and engaging in friendly competition for the one parking spot behind the house. Then, as if to illustrate his analogy in the most clear-cut manner possible, Travis and I had a falling out about a year after we became roommates. After a tense discussion, we agreed I should move out. We didn’t speak for probably six months. I’d both literally and figuratively rented a room in his building for a time—but if my business was to succeed, it needed a new location, and his building would be better served by different tenants. Heartbreak after the end of a relationship isn’t just an emotional reaction, isn’t just a blow to the ego, though it is both those things. Love and loss are physical experiences. There are measurable changes in brain chemistry— and the cardiovascular effects of being dumped are not unlike those observed during a heart attack. It’s excruciating to sever a tie to another human being, even if it’s a really good idea to do it. The agony of this process is why my friend Chris is completely over dating. He likens it to going on a series of job interviews, knowing that there’s a good chance he’ll be fired or quit within a few weeks. We show up in our dress clothes, presenting our best selves to a hiring manager who may or may not really know what the job entails. In this anal-

ach person is a big high-rise building,” my roommate Travis said. He was explaining his theory of the impermanence of human relationships. “On the first floor,” he said, “there’s a public lobby and some stores. Above that are office spaces. Above that: apartments. Some people are gonna just come in, mill around the lobby and leave. Other people rent out an office for a while. Some are great tenants; others pay rent late, ruin the carpets and have to be evicted. On the upper levels are the folks who commit for longer, living in an apartment for years. On the penthouse level, somebody might intend to stay there forever, so they buy the space. “Same thing goes,” he concluded, “for the people in your life.” I had to admit: As analogies about human experience go, this one works really well. Each of us, imagined as a building, boasts uniquely attractive architecture—and our own individual factors that determine who can enter. While some of us can be open to a really large number of people, we ultimately have a finite amount of space. The folks who just pass through the lobby make up a big part of every day’s activity, but their impact is limited and temporary. The further someone gets inside—gaining access to our security protocols as they prove their trustworthiness—the more they affect our business and functioning. People who plan to stay long-term will often invest more, painting the walls and doing renovations that suit their tastes and raise the value of the space. Travis and I were in the same graduate program and quickly became best friends. We had both moved to Philly at the same time and formed an instant connection, bonding over long hikes where we discussed challenging childhoods, debated philosophy and regaled each other with tales of our international travels. Within a few months, we went from strangers who’d never heard of each other to buddies who would call automatically if we hadn’t heard from the other in 48 hours. When he and his partner bought a house, they invited me to move in with them. We formed an odd little family,

hemtov Michtavi is no stranger to the law. After being sentenced to federal prison in Pennsylvania in 2004 for his involvement in a worldwide Ecstasy ring, the so-called “lieutenant” of Israeli drug kingpin Ze’ev Rosenstein has sued the United States at least twice for better in-prison treatment—and that was after he’d already gone after the New York Daily News for defamation when he was arrested. Recently Michtavi was transferred back to Israel to serve out the rest of his sentence—but not before he filed another lawsuit over the restrictions he lived under while incarcerated at central Pennsyvania’s FCI Allenwood facility. And now a Pennsylvania federal judge has ruled that suit may proceed. The issue at hand this time: ejaculation. According to court documents, following a prostate surgery mishap, Michtavi began suffering from a condition known as retrograde ejaculation. According to the Mayo Clinic, it’s a somewhat rare sexual disorder in which, upon ejaculation, the semen actually enters the bladder instead of “emerging through the penis during orgasm.” The condition can cause infertility if left untreated, and the doctor who performed the surgery prescribed Michtavi medication that would enable him to function normally. That should probably be the whole story—except that the federal prison system has a tricky rule: No ejaculating. “Many prison systems have rules against prisoners masturbating,” says Alex Friedmann, editor of Prison Legal News and himself a formerly incarcerated inmate. “To my knowledge, there’s no effort to challenge such policies. Most prisoners who want to masturbate simply do so in a manner that’s not observed by prison staff.” Indeed, a 2001 study of a maximum security prison found that all except one male inmate admitted to masturbating.
Two-thirds of female prisoners admit to it, too. Nonetheless, it’s against the law to touch yourself in prison—even in private. And as noted by sex therapist Dr. Marty Klein in a 2012 Psychology Today piece, if there’s any disagreement as to whether an inmate has masturbated or not, the inmate loses and is punished. “Prisons say they have to regulate masturbation because of security issues, which sounds completely bogus,” he wrote. “It’s the same argument society makes when it restricts the sexual expression of any group, such as teens, soldiers, and the elderly.” There have been several legal cases throughout the years pertaining to both ejaculation and pornography in prison. A group of prisoners in Connecticut launched a letter-writing campaign in 2012 to protest a ban on porn, and a Michigan inmate sued the U.S. for the right to masturbate in prison— which he needed because of his “chronic masturbation syndrome.” But Michtavi’s suit isn’t exactly about the right to masturbate. He sued for the right to be dispensed the medication he’d been prescribed for a condition that becomes worse when he ejaculates. His medication was denied by the prison’s clinical director, based on the premise that sexual dysfunction isn’t a serious enough condition to warrant being served medication in prison. And, of course, the logic at play is simple enough to understand: If both masturbation and sex are prohibited in prison, then a prisoner should have no need to treat an ejaculation-based condition. Though Michtavi is now in an Israeli prison, U.S. District Judge John E. Jones III of the Middle District of Pennsylvania has ruled that the case can move forward based on the Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees sufficient medical care for prisoners. n

OMG: The GOP in PA is NSFW Sure, everyone says government officials sit around jerking off all day. But we thought it was a figure of speech.
O
(Or, in this case, maybe puts it up there.) The problem is that they’re doing it with taxpayer money, on taxpayer equipment, on taxpayer time. Still, it doesn’t look like state Republicans can really help themselves. This pornography-sharing weirdness has been going on for years since Corbett was attorney general. Now Governor Corbett is expressing shock and dismay that, instead of just sitting at their desks doing nothing, as we’d all assumed, his best boys might have been sitting there doing something else. Idle hands, after all. With that in mind, I think it might be a good idea for us to give the GOP the kind of time it needs to get this whatever it is out of its collective system. They fairly obviously need some alone time. So Pennsylvanians would do well to vote Corbett and his merry band of closeted perverts out of office—just so long as they promise to wipe down their desks before they go.

Guys, you shouldn’t do that. Just like I have to walk my fat ass outside to check my OkCupid inbox, you really have to learn to put off your frantic urge to drool over porn until you can reach the privacy of your own home, Or, you know, the sleazy motel outside the capital where the truckers hang out. (Just sayin’.) I think it’s healthy that these conservative Republican men are stimulating themselves so vigorously. And of course I appreciate the fact that they want to shield their wives from their kinky inclinations. After all, the GOP has perfected the practice of compartmentalizing one’s sexuality to the point of two-faced hypocrisy to where it’s a dadaist art form. But, really—at work on state computers? Look, I get it: A red-blooded American male needs to masturbate. And given how tightly wound the GOP is, I would grant that, generally speaking, we should be encouraging whatever behavior takes the figurative stick out of their asses.
p h i l a d e l p h i a w e e k l y. c o m I o c t o b e r 1 - 8 ,
ccasionally while I’m writing in Philadelphia Weekly’s office, my personal phone-email will ping to notify me of a new message that’s waiting for me on the dating site OkCupid. I get a little excited: Is this the one? What’s this guy look like? Is he lovably quirky or just from another planet? If we go out, will I feel that oh-so-telling heart flutter, or will I feel forced to talk about boring, “safe” topics? All this races through my head in the span of seconds, and my imagination gets really serious, really fast: What will our (legal!) wedding be like? How many pastry shops will refuse to bake our wedding cake thanks to the state GOP’s refusal to include LGBT folks in anti-discrimination laws? Will we even have a cake? Oh god, what about live music, or do we want a DJ? Once the romantic fantasy train gets rolling, it’s hard to stop it. That’s no surprise; dallying in a fantasy world is always more interesting than coming back down to earth where I have a phone bill to pay and a train to catch. Often, of course, these daydreams play out without my having even looked at the OkCupid message; after all, it would be unprofessional to visit dating sites, even G-rated ones, from a job site. If I’m due for a break, I’ll step outside for a few minutes and check my OkCupid box on my phone (summarily judging my new suitor by his photos and his facility with the English language) before returning to the office and my latest deadline. So I was a little surprised when I read that some Republican male state politicians under the leadership of Governor Tom Corbett have allegedly been sharing graphic pornography from their state email accounts—and not once or twice, but hundreds and hundreds of times. In some of the more bizarre details the attorney general’s office has made public, explicit pictures of women servicing their male bosses made the rounds in a masturbatory twist on the hackneyed Internet meme of the “motivational poster.” The apparently inspirational themes of “Devotion” and “Willingness,” for instance, were depicted in these images by women performing sex acts. That’s a fairly pointed perversion of workplace mores— but then, in a perverse way, it’s almost hard to blame these Harrisburg dudes. After all, they’ve done such an abysmal job running the state, it’s little wonder they’re looking to escape into fantasy themselves. The difference between their fantasies and mine, you’ll note, is that mine involves cupcakes, a joint checking account and a house with a white picket fence, while theirs involves subservient women bestowing the boon of dutiful fellatio upon their grotesque, Limbaughesque physical forms. For some reason, a number of prominent state Republicans, including those who are now the head of the state police, the secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection, and the former spokesman for Governor Corbett, received hundreds of these graphic emails at work over an ongoing period of years. Some of the officials in question passed them along to their colleagues.

A straight male friend practices sounding and has for years. He has some medical questions about sounding. I am a pediatric nurse, so he brought his concerns to me, but the questions are totally outside my area of expertise. I am wondering how to find an MD in his area who would be knowledgeable and nonjudgmental. Needs Useful Referral Soon The National Coalition for Sexual Freedom maintains a “Kink Aware Professionals Directory” on its website: ncsfreedom.org. The doctors, counselors, lawyers, real-estate agents, etc. aren’t vetted by the NCSF, so inclusion on the list isn’t a recommendation. But it would be a good place for your friend to start looking for an irregular MD, someone he can open up to about sounding and whatever else he’s doing. In the meantime, I asked a doc for some thoughts about the risks and rewards of sounding. “Sounding refers to the insertion of foreign bodies into the urethra,” says Dr. Stephen H. King, MD, a board-certified urologist. “Under controlled medical conditions, urethral sounds, which are typically curved and sterilized metallic or plastic rods, are gently inserted onto the urethra [pee hole] in order to dilate a stricture [narrowing] that blocks the flow of urine out of the bladder. The lining of the urethra is typically very sensitive and delicate, and this procedure can be uncomfortable for most people.” But not everyone with a metallic or plastic rod sticking out of their urethra right now is experiencing discomfort. “Some people, likely a significant minority, derive sexual pleasure from urethral stimulation,” says King. “This includes both men and women. Sounders [not to be confused with Seattle’s soccer players!] have been known to insert a wide variety of objects, including but not limited to catheters, tubes, beads, pencils, batteries, drill bits and even the head of a decapitated snake. Yes, the latter has been reported.” I think we all need a moment to process that last detail. Someone found the head of a decapitated snake—or someone found a snake and decapitated it—and thought: “You know what? I’m going to stick this in my urethra.” Okay! On to your question, NURS: Your friend is a self-sounder and has been for years. So just how dangerous is sounding? “Some sounders end up in emergency rooms to remove a stuck object, leading to interesting X-rays and many good party conversations for us urologists,” says King. “But there is very limited medical literature on this topic beyond mostly case studies. However, one recent survey study associated recreational sounding with general high-risk behaviors and increased risk of STIs. Additional complications can include bleeding, infection, urethral stricture, perforation and erectile dysfunction. Some of these issues may cause long-term impairments or require surgical correction.” A couple qualifiers from a nonmedical nonprofessional (me): Sounding by itself doesn’t lead to higher rates of STIs. While an inept sounding session could leave a person with a raw and bloodied urethra, and this rawness would place a person at higher risk of contracting an STI should they be exposed to one, it’s the propensity toward high-risk behaviors generally that places sounders at greater risk of contracting STIs, not the sounding itself. Dr. King agrees with me on this point. Also, people who don’t get objects stuck in their urethras—sounders who don’t progress to larger
and larger objects before finally moving on to heads from decapitated snakes—don’t make appearances in emergency rooms, the medical literature or urologists’ party conversations. So the sample here is skewed, with sounders who are shoving only sterilized, well-lubricated and reasonably sized metal rods into their urethras underrepresented in the medical literature, cocktail party convo, etc. So while shoving a metal rod into your urethra is more dangerous than not shoving a metal rod into your urethra, it’s not as dangerous as the limited medical literature would suggest. “My guess is there are many people who sound without significant problems,” says King. “If performed in a very clean (ideally sterile) fashion with minimal trauma to the urethral lining, sounding maybe be relatively safe.” My friend’s boyfriend has a virginity fetish. Particularly the part where the girl bleeds a bit. His birthday is coming up, and she’d love to surprise him with some virginity bleeds. It won’t be a regular thing, so she’s OK with a bit of pain and discomfort. She asked for my advice—I’m the local sex guru—but this one has me stumped. Happy Hymen Hunting Good news, HHH! Your friend doesn’t have to endure pain and discomfort to treat her boyfriend to a few “virginity bleeds” on his birthday. “An artificial hymen also known as artificial virginity kit (and popularly referred to as a Chinese hymen or fake hymen) is a type of prosthetic membrane created for the purpose of stimulating an intact human hymen,” reads the highly disturbing copy at HymenShop.net. “Insert the artificial hymen into your vagina carefully ... When your lover penetrates, it will ooze out a liquid that appears like blood, not too much but just the right amount. Add in a few moans and groans, and you will pass through undetectable!” As creepy as the boyfriend’s fetish might seem, the fact that some women have to use these artificial hymens under duress—women who need to “pass” themselves off as virgins on their wedding nights—is far, far creepier than a woman using one to indulge her boyfriend’s kink. I’m a 29-year-old gay man. I recently ended a 10year relationship that was lackluster sexually. I’m now thrilled to be exploring sex with a new boyfriend who is GGG and as kinky as I am. The issue is that my boyfriend wants me to hit him and give him a bloody nose during sex. While this sounds hot, it worries me because he was abused as a child, and I’m afraid this might trigger something negative. What do you think? Just A Love Tap I think you should shove a couple of artificial hymens up your boyfriend’s nose and hit him just hard enough to break them, JALT, because punching someone in the face is dangerous. You could break his nose, for starters, and you could kill him, for finishers. But if this is something he simply must experience, and if he’ll find someone else to do it to him if you won’t (someone who may not be as invested in his health, safety and longevity), here are a couple of questions you need to ask him first: Has he done this before? If so, did it bring back unpleasant memories of his abuse? And does he have health insurance? But, honestly, I think you should go with the artificial hymens.
