Zombie Prom

“I gave my heart and soul to you, girl,” the Overbrook-raised Delfonics sang back in ‘69. Little did those gents dispensing that sweet Philadelphia sound 45 years ago know that their opus to heartache could be taken literally: by the flesh-eating undead, of course! This Saturday night, those rotting hordes are set to gather at the Trocadero for the annual Philadelphia Zombie Prom. All persons, living or dead, are welcome.

Just like its cousin, the spring season’s annual Zombie Crawl (which happens on Easter Sunday), this fall’s Zombie Prom takes a traditional American observance, the awkward and lovely angst of the high school prom, and turns it into a grotesquerie showing off the innards feelings of its attendees. Those in love are welcome to bring their soulless-mate, and those going stag are welcome to try to amble their way into someone’s chest cavity on the dance floor. Attendees are requested to look their ghastly best—blood, entrails and all.

Those without makeup skills, take heed: A professional makeup artist will be on-hand to make you look your worst, and the $10 fee goes directly to the artist. Dave Ghoul and DJ Kiltboy spin downstairs, and Mighty Mike Saga will be at the Balcony Bar. Groups Live Not On Evil and the Young Werewolves will be playing, too, showing and proving that musical taste has diversity, even in death.

Tickets often sell out for this event, so those interested should go to the Troc’s box office (or online) for advance tickets for a mere $11; tickets at the door are $16. Both the Loews and Hampton Inn are offering discounts if you stay the night for the Prom, and Philly AIDS Thrift will be slashing prices 20 percent for those purchasing Zombie Prom-related attire there, too.

It doesn’t matter if you’re alive or dead, single or partnered: The Zombie Prom is there for you to have one hell of a good time. After all, to paraphrase something, when there is no more room in hell, the dead will dance on the earth. // JOSH KRUGER // More zombies: page 18.

Opera Philadelphia: The Barber of Seville There aren’t many other operas as big as this one—Mozart’s The Magic Flute maybe, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly perhaps. Pierre Beaumarchais wrote Le Barbier de Séville —what you know as The Barber of Seville—in 1773, but Gioachino Rossini took it to the next level in 1816, nearly 200 years ago, with an epic performance in Rome. Barber is a comic opera, or opera buffa, a genre that tells a tale in often comically tragic circumstances and typically employs something called patter song, a rapid succession of lyrics paired with notes. (Think The Pirates of Penzance’s famous “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General.”)

So, it’s 18th-century Seville, Spain, and Rosina—played by starring mezzo Jennifer Holloway, making her OP debut—is considered a seriously hot commodity: She’s this beautiful, rich, protected young stunner, and everyone wants her. The barber, Figaro (baritone Jonathan Beyer), does—and Count Almaviva (tenor Taylor Stayton) desires her the most, it seems, but, creepily, Rosina’s guardian, Doctor Bartolo (bass Kevin Burdette), is determined to marry her, too, maybe because whomever she chooses is going to get a sick dowry. Disguises are employed, bribes fly, secret letters are exchanged, all to compete for Rosina’s affections. It becomes a question of who really loves her, not just the idea of her—or her coin.

Opera Philadelphia’s modern, artistic treatment of The Barber of Seville is a glorious testament to why it’s so enduring. In August 1980, most American pollsters agreed the race for the White House between Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter was too close to call, but in Queens, N.Y., four punks due to play their first gig ever were already anticipating the conservative revolution that the former actor and California governor would wage on American politics. Those visionaries called themselves Reagan Youth, and less than three months later, their outfit’s namesake would win the ’80 presidential election in a landslide. Thankfully, they started their own war, of the sonic variety, popularizing politically-infused low-fi punk and hardcore in the U.S., alongside bands like Bad Brains, the Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, the Circle Jerks and Angry Samoans.

Reagan Youth broke up about a decade later, and three years after that, its former lead singer, Dave Rubenstein, killed himself after the death of his mom and the murder of his girlfriend.

In 2006, however, two guys from the original band joined up with two newbies to reform it, joining a number of class-A punk bands giving it a second go. They sound pretty good, and they’re still singing lyrics like “We are the sons of Reagan heil/We are the godforsaken heil/The right is our religion/We all watch television/Drugs have fried our brainwashed minds.”

She’s a 40-year-old now-iconic Irish lass from Dublin who sounds like Wanda Jackson fronting the Brian Setzer Orchestra. She’s got a skunk-streaked pompadour, colorful tattoos and performs a killer kind of rockabilly. Remember those moments we had in the ‘80s and ‘90s with Stray Cats’ “Rock This Town” and the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies’ Zoot Suit Riot? I’ll admit they felt like fads I would’ve happily watched pull away from the shore. But Imelda May does it better then anyone could imagine.

Primarily, May’s a killer vocalist who leads a band, but she can work a six-string and handheld percussion. She used to sing cuter, poppier stuff and was gigging in Dublin and London before she was legally allowed to, but when a boyfriend broke her heart, her father said, essentially, “Good. Now sing the blues.” It stuck: 2008’s Love Tattoo and 2010’s Mayhem are delightfully varied LPs that earned her great acclaim, and for good reason. They’re deliciously rich, bluesy collections that capture the essence of a smoky bar, lonely strangers connecting over lipstick-rimmed cocktail glasses and a beautiful, dangerous woman under a spotlight, with a standing mic and piano accompaniment.

May is already huge in Ireland and the UK, which is fun to think about in terms of the Aisles getting fully behind what feels like an inherently Americana-inspired genre. Still, we’re lucky she’s making an earnest effort to connect with us stateside. // B.C.

This Mixed-Up Season The Nutty Mac, the Falling Down, a Pair of Gingers—meet the new wave of cocktails Philly bars are rolling out this autumn.

A

utumn always seems like a particularly auspicious time to get serious once again about our cocktail drinking. By the time August has come and gone, it’s usually just been too hot for me to really crave much aside from a moderately hydrating gin and tonic or a refreshing Vespa.

But now that fall has finally moved in, it’s time for all of us to get ready for some sipping. Without the heat and humidity, this is the season for not just dipping a toe back into the old cocktail pool, but for jumping right in.

And local establishments seem to be more than happy to help.

Hop Sing Laundromat (1029 Race St., hopsinglaundromat.com), home to complex, often surprising and always stunning cocktails, is ringing in the season with some appealing additions. The Wisconsin Iced Tea utilizes one of my favorite domestic gins, from Death’s Door, and combines it with Pimm’s No. 1, Barrow’s Intense Ginger Liqueur, oolong tea, velvet falernum, mint and fresh-squeezed lemon juice, all garnished with a strawberry. On the darker side of the flavor spectrum is the Night Train, with Laphroaig Quarter Cask and Gosling’s Family Reserve Old Rum, both joined by Green Chartreuse and kissed with the oils from an orange twist (though not the twist itself ). I’ll take both, please.

The Swann Lounge at the Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia (1 Logan Square) is crafting a cocktail that practically has autumn written on the side of the glass: Called the Nutty Mac, it brings together Macallan 12 Year with maple and walnut bitters and Laird’s Apple Brandy. For a smokier tipple, I’d check out the Smokey Jefe, with Patron silver, nectarine and lemon served in a glass that’s been washed with Laphroaig.

The Fat Ham (3131 Walnut St., sbraga dining.com) will be home to the Gaineswood, which takes Four Roses, infuses it with molasses, mint, coriander, star anise and dried Alabama sassafras, and then introduces Demerara syrup, orange bitters and a twist of lemon. At Sbraga (440 S Broad St., sbragadining. com), the Falling Down sounds like a great way to welcome the season, too: Krupnikas, a spicy honey liqueur from Lithuania, is combined with rye, pear liqueur, Licor 43, Genepy des Alpes and chocolate mole bitters. Bring on the cooler weather!

Bitters also play an important role in The Master at Stratus (433 Chestnut St., stratus lounge.com), which leverages Dios Baco Fino Sherry and Absolut Craft Herbal Lemon to

punch up Moroccan bitters and a homemade ginger syrup. Davio’s (111 S. 17th St., davios. com) is using apple bitters to amp their Candy Apple cocktail, which also utilizes apple vodka and apple brandy, as well as grenadine and

cranberry juice. And Harvest Seasonal Grill (200 S. 40th St., harvestseasonalgrill.com), with its Karma Kale Lemonade Martini, uses American Harvest Organic Vodka as a base for apple juice, cold-pressed kale and lemon.

Sassafras (48 S. Second St., sassafrasbar. com) in Old City is rolling out their Breviary list of cocktails, and the Prime, with Tito’s vodka, Allagash White and blood orange puree, sounds like a seriously fine restorative.

Oyster House (1516 Sansom St., oysterhouse philly.com) will be debuting their autumn cocktails in October, and they will include the Gun in the Trouble Box. Think Famous Grouse, Barbancourt 8 Year, Carpano Antica, Meletti amaro and manzanilla sherry. If this is any indication, I suspect it will be an excellent list in its entirety.

Twisted Tail (509 S. Second St. thetwisted tail.com) is using a puree of pumpkins alongside Catdaddy moonshine, Kraken run, whiskey barrel aged bitters and a bit of cream in their appropriately named Drink’n Punkin.

On the other end of the city, the Academic Bistro and Bar (101 N. 33rd St., 6th Floor) at Drexel’s Center for Hospitality and Sport Management will be featuring the wonderfully named A Pair of Gingers, produced using house-crafted pear puree, bourbon and Fever Tree ginger ale.

Taqueria Feliz (4410 Main St., taqueria feliz.com), the standout Manayunk destination, will be pouring a mezcal sour, which utilizes the abundant charms of Del Maguey Vida alongside lemon, lime and simple syrup.

It may not quite be fireplace season yet, but the smokiness of this drink is sure to get you in the mood for it.

Great drinks aren’t just happening in the city this season; the suburbs are home to a renewed focus on them, as well. Paris Bistro (8229 Germantown Ave., parisbistro.net) is whipping up a cosmo spiked with calvados, as well as the Cloud Nine Cafe (84 Commerce Dr., Reading. thecloudninecafe.com), with Bastille 1789 French whiskey, dark-chocolate syrup, hazelnut liqueur and French roast coffee. Conshohocken’s Isabella (382 E. Elm St., barisabella.com) is pouring a jalapeñoinfused margarita made with 1800 Tequila, a honeycomb-infused Manhattan and more.

Mainland Inn’s (17 Mainland Rd., Harleysville) cocktail program, which is still being finalized for its opening in Montgomery County this autumn, will include the use of a Concordgrape shrub crafted from fruit picked on the attached farm.

In other words, no matter where you live, regardless of where the center of gravity of your drinking life is, none of us has an excuse this autumn to stick with the same old drinks we always have. There is just too much good stuff out there to allow that to happen. 

Ex-Girl to the Next Girl

With his brand-new second solo album, A New Testament, former Girls frontman Christopher Owens takes a country turn.

“O

h, I wish I had a boyfriend. I wish I had a loving man in my life,” sings Christopher Owens on “Lust For Life,” the opening track on 2009’s Album, the debut LP by Girls, his now-defunct band. The lyrics struck me when I first heard it years ago: Here was a popular, criticallyacclaimed indie band with a frontman whose stylized vocals blatantly expressed man-on-man love.

“That line was a genuine feeling. I have had boyfriends in the past,” Owens tells PW from San Francisco, where he’s been living for a while now after an infamous escape from the Children of God cult to Amarillo, TX. “In my late teens and early 20s, I had a lot of experiences with friends and people I’ve met, and it really opened up my mind to not only understanding others, but understanding things like love,” he explains.

Owens is now in a committed relationship with a woman. But there’s some things the fairer sex simply doesn’t really do for you. “It helped me understand life,” he says. “There are experiences that, in a moment of complete sorrow, I can write a song like that.” The boyfriend line, he claims, is about “someone putting their arms around me and protecting me.”

These days, though, Owens is on his own—musically, anyway. And after the January 2013 release of Lysandre, his first solo record, he didn’t really tour much. That could be why he was able to turn around and put out his latest, A New Testament, due out next week, which is essentially “Chris Owens Goes Country.”

“The last record, it was such a delicate thing; there are various instruments that were very delicate,” Owens says of his solo effort, which employed flutes and classical guitars—and a notorious saxophone solo courtesy of “New York City.” The record’s songs tell a story and function as one big, connected narrative. “We played the show in the order of the record, and the songs sort of run into each other,” he adds, noting that they never put themselves “where there’s a mob that can turn on you.” It wasn’t Girls, and it wasn’t exactly a welcome festival set. “This time around, it’s upbeat. It’s a big sound. So I’m gonna play a lot more than I did last year.” He’s just embarked on a huge tour that brings him to World Café Live on Saturday.

“That’s the band, nine including me,” he says of the image: three backup singers, a pedal steel player and various other Girls refugees who helped him record Testament by coming in and working with Owens in the studio. “For some reason, being in Girls was difficult for some 20 people,” he admits.

“Realistically, it was quite a struggle, and I felt like I was putting too much energy into this goal of forming a band, as opposed to making records.”

Bands are cool, of course. But sometimes their mystique and magic is all smoke and mirrors.

“It’s easier to get behind a band because it’s more enigmatic or something,” says Owens. “The first Girls album was really the beginning of songwriting for me; those were my first songs. As I was going through the whole rollercoaster of what Girls was, I was also learning more about who I wanted to be as a songwriter. It became very clear that I was writing about myself, for myself, from myself, and I started to identify

more with people like Elliott Smith or James Taylor or Paul Simon than as someone in a band.”

The brand new video for “Never Wanna See That Look Again” will really “show my personality,” he says of the clip, directed by frequent Girls visual collaborator Aaron Brown.

It captures Owens in a tight, burnt red thermal speckled with gemstones as he emotes and dramatizes the song’s two-minute apology.

“The country thing was the biggest mark to hit, as far as any kind of goal goes,” he says of Testament—even slipping it in that Amarillo’s about two hours north of Lubbock, Buddy Holly’s hometown, even though Owens’ own “country” inspirations sound more like Nashville and Bakersfield. Maybe pitching a country record to his friends and session players was crucial for getting folks on board. Musicians, it turns out, love the idea of a one-off, ‘cause then they’re free to go back to their lives. “One of the things that I’ve found nice about what I’m doing now, as opposed to a fixed band, is you approach however many people and say ‘Do you want to make

a record?’ and if they say yes, they’re usually excited, and then we’re gonna go on tour, and there’s just a bit of excitement.”

As for Girls, they managed to make two LPs and an EP that everyone still pretty much goes ape over. “I remember when that happened, I had to figure out what Pitchfork was,” Owens recalls, circumstances not completely unlike abandoning the family sect and starting from scratch elsewhere. His first job was at an Albertson’s stocking groceries at night. “I wish I had footage of me going in to apply. I remember I just looked at the application like it was something crazy. I couldn’t fill out the application for education or references or work experience.”

That was as a teenager. Now, at 35, Owens has lived nearly as long on the outside as he did on the inside. Five albums later, he’s gotta feel pretty good about that—if not divinely protected.  Sat., Sept. 27, 8pm. $20-$22. With Liam Hayes. PA Ballet Stays On Its Toes The revered company’s new artistic director shows his mettle soon in Press Play, The Directorial Debut of Angel Corella.

score. “It’s a gorgeous piece of music,” he says of the pas de deux, where “the girl is floating. You don’t actually see her touching the floor.”

In an interview with WHYY, Corella said that when he first took the reigns at the Ballet, especially after a complete regime change, its dancers were like cats with arched backs in the corner of a room. But he’s working hard to connect with his teammates and give them what they need to blossom and be expressive on stage. “I want to give them the freedom to come out of their shells and not be afraid to communicate with the audience,” he said, “so that when they go on stage, they don’t have to think about anything. Everyone’s sort of feeling like they’re supported, and they can take chances.”

Press Play’s fourth and final piece is Stravinsky’s Jeu de Cartes, an iconic ballet choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky.

It translates to “the card game,” a notion that Ratmansky has said translates to movement in the way that it’s a gamble to mess with Stravinsky’s score by turning it into dance.

PA Ballet took a gamble with its changing of the guards, but Corella seems confident that those moves will bear fruit in the form of the gorgeous, expressive creativity and skill that will win over an ever-expanding audience in the company’s 51st season.

“It was already one of the top companies in America, and we want to make it the top company in America and the world,” he says. “We’re all working in the same direction with the same energy, and it’s wonderful to be supported in that way—and it should always be that way. If you want to be successful, you want your organization to be successful. And if not, the whole thing is collapsing.” 

ust off the 300 block of North Broad, on Wood Street, is PA Ballet’s pretty new rehearsal space: an old armored car garage that now holds five studios and their brand new artistic director’s office. Angel Corella (pronounced ahnHEL) is scurrying through the hallways, weaving through dancers stretching on the floor, when he greets a visitor with a giant smile and hearty handshake.

Last year, PA Ballet asked art consultant Michael M. Kaiser to study their organization top to bottom and make some recommendations. As a result, they dropped an executive director, an artistic director, plus the ballet master and mistress—and hired the 38-year-old, Madrid-born Corella to take their company to bigger and better places. Now, the public gets to bear witness to the new leader’s new direction in about three weeks with the Oct. 16 premiere of Press Play: The Directorial Debut of Angel Corella.

“It was amazing the way that they received me,” Corella says of his first few interactions with his talented toolset: the Ballet corps. Of the personnel changes, he says, “it was for the vision of what we want to do in the future. The good thing is that we didn’t move any of the corps. That hasn’t changed at all.”

With Press Play, Corella wants to come out of the gates highlighting his characteristic zeal for dance that’s truly vibrant and lively. He’s picked four beautiful pieces that are going to leave audiences dazzled.

“The curtain goes up, and the dancers are already moving on stage, so the energy’s already going on. That’s the kind of pace that I want to create—where the audience is catching up with us,” he says of Allegro Brillante, which boasts a legendary Tchaikovsky score that demands a vigorously prepared cast. It’s a Balanchine piece, one the famed chorographer’s been known to say is “everything I know about classical ballet in 13 minutes.”

Corella knows a thing or two about Balanchine and Tshaikovsky; he’s danced with such top-notch companies as American Ballet Theater, the Royal Ballet in London, the Kirov and at the New York City Ballet, including a renowned stint as one of ABT’s principal dancers. “I’ve danced, pretty much, with every company in the world, and I’m not a tall, blond dancer with blue eyes. And I want to say it was because of personality that I made people experience things on stage,” he adds. “It made me the richest man in the world, and I have all that knowledge, and I can share it with the dancers now. You can’t put a price on that.”

Corella’s world-renowned status could be how PA Ballet got the rights to execute Jerome Robbins’ Other Dances, a Chopin ballet that was created explicitly for Mikhail Baryshnikov and Natalia Makarova. “They’re very particular about who does it. It’s a piece that not many companies are allowed to do,” Corella says. He sent in some videos of the corps, and the news was good. He sees that green light as a sign that PA Ballet is on the come-up. “I can feel like the ballet world is getting notice of what’s going on here.”

Other Dances is an intimate one. A piano’s on stage, and there’s lots of softness; Corella says “it almost feels like you’re intruding.” That may prove true for the company premiere of Christopher Wheeldon’s Liturgy, as well, set to an Arvo Pärt

The Guest

T

he art of the throwback is a delicate one. You get a lot more latitude than anyone attempting a reboot, but if you tip your hat at too many sources too many times, you risk looking like a pre-dated pastiche. Good news: The Guest, which began its rolling open in late September and is scheduled to open here Oct. 3, is a masterclass in how to skip over all those problems. Instead, familiarity becomes the blueprint for a wickedly funny, over-the-top good time from director Adam Wingard and screenwriter Simon Barrett, who’ve built a joint resume of old-fashioned thrillers (V/H/S, You’re Next) with modern sensibilities that aren’t burdened by being too self-aware for wholeheartedness.

And nearly everything about The Guest is wholehearted, from the menacing synth score to neon-drenched staredowns to the Peterson family themselves, grieving the loss of a son in military action. When David (Dan Stevens) shows up on the doorstep to pay his respects, Mrs. Peterson (Sheila Kelley) is only too happy to welcome him. He plays guardian angel pretty well, and soon the family thinks of him as their own—except maybe Anna (Maika Monroe), who can’t shake the feeling David’s not as he seems.

He’s not, of course—if he were, the delightfully on-the-nose camerawork, the taut foreshadowing and the many examinations of Stevens’ murderously placid expression would be wasted. But it’s in these details that The Guest goes from formula to something more nuanced, especially since David truly seems to want a place in the family, which makes the hints of the oncoming storm all the more unsettling. The movie’s streak of pitch-black humor smooths the knowing twists and turns, but these smaller character dynamics lend enough weight to keep the tension ticking. Together, they make The Guest a well-earned succession of thrills. (Genevieve Valentine)

The Skeleton Twins

T

here’s a lot of indie-movie neatness about The Skeleton Twins, so much symmetry as to shift the movie’s initial premise from realism into a fairy tale. Twins Maggie (Kristen Wiig) and Milo (Bill Hader) attempt suicide the same day, to varying degrees.

They each have a dark secret that’s bound to come out, and they happen to still carry important items from childhood. They even get a sun-drenched flashback featuring the requisite skeletons to contrast the autumnal resignation of small-town New York. And if you’re annoyed by movies in which lip-synching is part of the healing process, be forewarned.

It’s to the movie’s enormous benefit, then, that Wiig and Hader are such an electric pair that they very nearly carry it off. Their performances are both wisely, darkly low-key; they inhabit one another’s orbits so well that their jokes carry the dry inflection of sibling telepathy. Not that they’re exactly alike: Milo is chronically open, while Maggie’s misery seems so deep-seated, she can barely articulate it even to herself, which means their initial awkward truce is bound to falter. The film’s greatest mystery is whether they’ll be brave enough to replace it with something better.

Whether attempting to recapture some imagined, careless youth or shouting each other down in the street, Hader and Wiig’s every hangout is quietly absorbing, and the movie works best when writer Mark Heyman and writer/director Craig Johnson give them the space they so easily occupy. (There’s a scene at the dentist’s office that has no purpose other than to watch them crack each other up. In some movies, that would seem indulgent; here, it just seems wise.) They’re the only two characters who seem fully real, and some of their realizations skew a little neat, but these Skeleton Twins pull it all off in style. (G.V.)

The Poor, Wounded Male

Dan Stevens’ sicko in The Guest is the unintentional mirror of certain internet commenters.

A

dam Wingard and Simon Barrett’s latest winky thriller The Guest (see review, left) comes out Oct. 3, just in time to don a polo shirt and calmly stare down everyone at the party until they recognize the costume or lock you in the basement. And since its rolling release, that seems to have been most of the focus: its equal successes as a suspense flick and a winning dark comedy. However, there’s a darker underpinning to that uncertainty and building dread, one that goes beyond David’s (Dan Stevens) barnbroad understatements (“I’m a soldier”) and markers of the form. Because alongside its dark humor, its moments of genuine family feeling and its wry callbacks to kill-’em-alls of yore, The Guest also manages to be a deft fable about a particular breed of masculinity in the internet age.

This film has self-aware sleekness, stringing out enough twisted laughs that its bursts of violence actually startle, rather than just add to the body count. And it’s aided by the casual claustrophobia of the Petersons: Sheila Kelley’s grieving mother, Leland Orser’s oblivious dad, the pricelessly-reactive Brendan Meyer as bullied Luke and Maika Monroe as Anna, whose malaise conceals a keen observer.

Then there’s Stevens, the movie’s magnetic center. Awash in the sort of folksy charm that gets you an open-ended invitation and the lurking menace that justifies the urgent synths, David has the uncanny bearing of a guardian-angel android on the verge of a major malfunction. And with such a central figure, the movie’s greatest tension is not the whodunit of his origins, which is so over-the-top, it doesn’t matter. Instead, the tension is in moments where David wavers. There’s no answer why he stays, and the movie seems unsure whether even David could explain himself.

The flashes of violence and doubt are equally unsettling, because they upset the careful mask he’s constructed.

It’s a pattern that has, unfortunately, been established in internet comments sections everywhere. When David initially shows up, he presents himself as trustworthy. He

presents connections to things and people they love. He has nothing but kind things to say. He offers to help however he can. And he helps. He’s a violent but dedicated servant of the family, as long as the family unknowingly enables him to be—as long as they need him and tell them how much, and as long as their gratitude holds. The problem happens when he’s questioned.

It’s Anna, of course, who does it. She’s one of the modern strain of Final Girl—she appreciates that Matthew Crawley’s sporting some serious abs, but it doesn’t distract her from the suspicions she knows from the very first are well-founded, and it doesn’t keep her from publicly calling him out. And when the young woman questions the occupationally-macho guy’s right to be there, nothing but destruction follows. First, it’s reassurance to others that Anna’s overreacting. Then it’s veiled threats to Anna herself. Then it’s far less veiled threats. And when the powersthat-be support her story and try to shut him down (with a SWAT team, because this is a B-movie, after all), he decides that if he’s going, he’s taking everyone else with him.

The sense of David as an avatar for wounded manhood is heightened by the sheer ridiculousness of his captors, who offer plenty of concern about who they’re dealing with, but never come close to the Why. That central question—why did he come at all, if this was how disposable he found them?—is never answered. And Stevens even gives David moments of genuine hurt when Anna questions him, in between shooting them dead. It’s haunting in its pitch-black honesty because it feels like a glimpse into the mind of every furious commenter who’s ever turned on his allies and started hurling epithets the first time anyone questions his methods, wording or intent. And it’s a ghost that follows you home.

Near the end of the movie, David is asked, “Why were you ever kind?”

He has no answer. 

Enough is Enough Last week’s Center City gay-bashing attack underlines the urgent need to fix Pennsylvania’s hate-crime laws.

hilly and Pennsylvania residents were taken aback last week when PW’s PhillyNow.com blog reported that Pennsylvania’s hate-crimes statute does not cover attacks against LGBT peo-

ple.

Hate crimes, as defined at the state level, did include those based on gender and sexual orientation from 2002 until 2008, at which time that law was overturned by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court on a technicality. Subsequently, Democratic efforts led by State Rep. Brendan Boyle to reinstate protections for LGBT citizens were met with a total lack of support.

This is particularly disheartening in light of the past week’s news that a gay couple was allegedly attacked and savagely beaten in Center City, and reportedly were called “dirty fags” as the beating took place. Though the allegations clearly suggested the sort of offense that people would label a hate crime—and, indeed, police called it such at first—local authorities lacked the ability to prosecute it as such, due to state law.

“Imagine being a gay teen in a small town somewhere in the state hearing this news,” says Ted Martin, executive director of Equality PA. “If this can happen in Philadelphia, what kind of things can happen where they live—and who would come to their defense if it did? The psychological effects and social intimidation that hate crimes cause are exactly why we need hate-crimes legislation.”

Since that report, many in the state have been kicking into action— because Pennsylvania’s lack of protections for our gay, trans, bisexual and lesbian brothers and sisters is not okay.

First up was Philadelphia artist—and friend of the attacked— Caryn Kunkle. She started a Change.org petition that’s currently just shy of 8,000 signatures, calling upon the Legislature to “include sexual orientation” on its hate crimes statute.

Councilman Jim Kenney was next. The at-large councilman sent a letter to the U.S. Attorney’s office on Sept. 18 asking the federal gov-

ernment to investigate the alleged crime, “simply because Pennsylvania does not have a provision in its hate crime code dealing with sexual orientation, and that says a lot about Pennsylvania. But it doesn’t mean people in our city should not be protected under federal law.”

In 2009, President Barack Obama signed the Matthew Shepard Act specifically for the purpose of covering such cases. Under the act, if there’s evidence a hate crime took place in a state that does not have hate-crime provisions in place for LGBT people, the federal government can file its own charges. There have been a handful of cases over the last few years in which the Act has been applied to prosecute hate crimes—most notably in Kentucky, New Mexico and Arkansas.

But getting the federal government involved often proves difficult, which is why so many want to see state law giving local authorities the power to act on their own.

In any case, Kenney had a message for non-Philadelphians: “If you’re a homophobe or a racist, and you’re from the suburbs or outside the city, we really don’t want you to come here,” the councilman said from his perch in City Hall. “We don’t want you to use our restaurants, we don’t want you to walk our streets, we don’t want you to enjoy our city life. We can live without you.”

Equality Pennsylvania then began its own online petition, asking supporters to email their legislators and urge them to include sexual orientation and gender identity in the state hate-crimes law.

“Many people are rightly calling this incident a hate crime,” Martin said in an email. “Hate crimes attack the heart of a community by not only striking fear into the victims but also intimidating everyone in the group associated with those victims. Unfortunately, in Pennsylvania sexual orientation and gender identity are not included as protected groups under the State’s hate crimes law.”

On Tuesday, state legislators, including Philadelphia Democrats Larry Farnese, Brendan Boyle and Brian Sims, held a press conference calling upon the state to pass Boyle’s and State Sen. Jim Ferlo’s (D-

Pittsburgh) bills, and add physical disability, sexual orientation, gender and gender identity” to the state’s hate crimes provision.

The event received an unexpectedly dramatic punch when Sen. Ferlo came out during the press conference.

“I’m gay. Get over it. It’s a great life,” Ferlo said. “I think the more that people learn and respect and experience diversity, I think the better off we are as a society.”

Boyle’s bill was last touched in January 2013, and will have to be reintroduced if it isn’t passed and signed by Gov. Corbett this fall. But is hate crime legislation a big priority for Corbett in an election year?

Unlikely.

Later on Tuesday, the Philadelphia district attorney’s office announced it’d approved arrest warrants in the Center City attack case for Phillip Williams, 24; Kevin Harrigan, 26; and Katherine Knott, 24; all of Bucks County. The D.A.’s statement noted the approved charges would include two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of simple assault, two counts of recklessly endangering another person and one count of criminal conspiracy.

Missing from that list, of course: hate crimes.

Philly likes to call itself the best place in the country for LGBT people—but the city exists in a state that’s still backwards in lots of regards. In addition to failing so far to cover disabilities, sexual orientation and gender in our hate-crimes provision, there’s still no statewide law making discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity a crime, either. And it took a court decision—not the legislature or the governor—to legalize same-sex marriage.

That the state legislature didn’t care enough to re-pass a law to protect citizens from being attacked for the simple fact of who they are gives us an idea about the sorts of people who are running the show two hours west. That such legislation is still unlikely to pass this fall— even after all that’s happened—should show you how desperate change is needed. 

An open letter to the bitches who robbed me.

I

IS HIRING! ing their desire for karma to come back on you, possibly in the form of explosive diarrhea. Thing is, I suspect you think theft is OK because it has happened to you: Others have violated you, disrespected your property and abused your trust. Perhaps you think this is your karma, to pay the pain forward to the girl on her laptop. Maybe you assumed my parents bought it for me or something. You probably didn’t assume I’ve worked seven days a week for years, holding down an endless stream of gigs to pay off student loan debt. Maybe you didn’t think about it at all.

Or maybe this is actually my karma coming back for that $20 bill, with compounded interest, accruing since the ‘90s.

You may have taken some stuff, but you won’t shake my faith. I love my big city and its people. I still believe the majority are good and honest. Even you! I think you have the capacity to be decent, too. Take one more thing from me, this advice: We’ve all done bad deeds in our lives, but it doesn’t need to define us. 

Since I mentioned online what you did, people have been telling me their stories about being robbed and ripped off. There are the teens who faked a tussle near my friend in South Philly, taking her wallet with them. The dudes who reach into purses, the opportunists who use bumps and quick stops on public transit to grab and dash—even the vile thieves who slit a guy’s throat for a phone in Fishtown.

Nearly everyone has something like this happen, regardless of where they live. As a slew of people reminded me, these things happen in the city all the time. They tell me you can never let your guard down. Not for a single second. That you should expect every fellow citizen to be a sociopath. It isn’t exactly victim-blamey, but it feels gross. And when we expect the world is shitty, I suspect it’s harder to be one of the people who makes the world better, friendlier and safer.

’m going to admit something for the first time, something I had almost entirely forgotten until Wednesday, when you stole my cash and credit card: When I was a teenager, I took $20 from the register at my job and was never caught. I’m now searching my memory for an explanation as to how on earth I justified it. I’m trying to find empathy for you and why you stole my shit.

It couldn’t have possibly been out of need that I swiped that bill. My parents took care of housing and food, and even gave me a car to drive around.

Having worked since the age of 12, I had spending money for whatever random things I thought I needed at Hot Topic or Claire’s. Maybe I thought I was owed something. Perhaps I felt like my hard work, diligence and putting up with creepy managers was worth more than the wage I was paid.

In all honesty, I suspect it was the thrill of outsmarting the system. Noticing a hole that could be exploited, there was excitement in outmaneuvering the company’s anti-theft structures. So perhaps that motivation, the game-playing, was also your jam. Why else would you be so un-slick about touching my bag and making loud conversation while you sat by me— so I’d have to turn and look directly at your stupid, ugly faces repeatedly—if not to test me and see if you’d get away with it anyway? You had to know that the moment I recognized my stuff was gone, there’d be no doubt who did it, but that it would be too late. Or maybe it’s not about me—maybe it’s about the police and trying to show that you can’t be found, even though you’re on video cameras at both the restaurant and the Pier 1 where you spent $700 ten minutes later.

In the scheme of annoyances and violations, this isn’t the worst, although it certainly is both of those things. I’m angry you felt entitled to just take things for which I labored. I’m frustrated you read me as an easy mark. I’m annoyed you’re going to spend my money on some stupid consumer shit, supporting the companies whose practices further the inequality of wealth distribution, ironically leading to the kind of economic situations where people feel the need to steal. Most of all, I’m upset

THE UNCOMFORTABLE WHOLE

All You Zombies

We Americans are furiously stocking up for the undead apocalypse here in our shelter—and neighbors, we ain’t makin’ room for you.

T

he announcement of the upcoming Philadelphia Zombie Prom (see page 4) got me to thinking: What is it about zombies, anyway? What is this fascination we have for picturing the end of the world specifically as a ravenous horde of mindless, implacable un-humans who can’t be stopped from ripping our skulls apart with their teeth?

Well, if there’s one thing we seem to fear, as humans and as Americans, it’s losing our bountiful good fortune. And we fear losing it from all sides. In our most nightmarish, Walking Dead-esque visions of undead plague scenarios, when the earth’s day of reckoning does come, if the zombies don’t rip you apart, your fellow survivors surely will. After all, we see this type of human nature on full display in the bread and water aisles of every supermarket the night before a snowstorm.

People stake their claims.

But those flesh-eating undead we see on TV—that supernatural terror, fictional though it is, bears a pretty strong mythic resemblance to people’s contemporary fear of that more down-to-earth urban boogieman, the junkie we imagine snatching purses on the El. If you haven’t envisioned it, you’ve heard someone talking who has: the lurking dread that some drooling, barely-alive mess on the Market-Frankford line might just come to consciousness long enough to swipe your wallet, ambling off at Somerset Station and into the night.

In both of these imagined scenarios—the fantastical, and the mundane—the fear is one of loss, of having our precious few resources, right down to our very lives, taken away by those who don’t respect our personal sanctity, whether they be slavering monsters—or other human beings we just find it easier to visualize as slavering monsters.

This fear often motivates us to take certain steps. “Let’s prepare for calamity,” we say. “If we simply get ready for the shit to hit the fan, we’ll get through it just fine.”

To more balanced people, this means taking steps to help protect ourselves from being victimized, like by triple-pocketing something deep inside our backpacks or purses. Or taking a self-defense class. Or even carrying a permitted, legally registered concealed weapon.

To less balanced folks, though, being “well prepared” means hoarding canned goods and ammunition in a concrete bunker. And, just maybe, gloating about it. “I got mines,” they’ll guffaw once the Reptilians land on earth. “Later days, you unprepared assholes!” Hell, there’s an entire reality show, Doomsday Preppers, devoted to those lunatics—whose doors we’ll all probably be banging on once the shit does hit the fan.

And we’ll be locked out. (There was a Twilight Zone about this. Remember?)

After all, there’s simply not enough room for everyone in a single shelter, not enough food in a single pantry, not enough whatever for anybody else. In fact, that’s one of the central conceits of apocalyptic stories: While we’re not sure exactly what you’ll actually need to survive once the world comes to an end, you can be sure of one thing—whatever it is, there won’t be enough to share. I mean, hell, there aren’t

enough resources to take care of everybody in our society even now, right?

At least, that’s the rationale anti-immigrant types love to trot out for why we can’t possibly provide for noncitizens on our soil. “There just isn’t enough money to pay for those kids to go to our schools,” they bawl. Some go right for the tawdriest possible version of this rhetoric: “We don’t have enough resources to help our returning war veterans, how can we

help illegals, too?”

That last one is a particular jingoistic, paranoid favorite. It combines both nationalistic hogwash about veterans—folks the political right doesn’t give a flying fuck about any other time of the year—and the dehumanizing noun form of illegal. After all, it’s much easier to say something callous when you remove someone’s humanity and dub them an illegal.

It’s a lot like calling someone a zombie, actually.

From a political standpoint, of course, you can’t really blame the nationalists for trying to dehumanize immigrants.

Because those in favor of closed borders and deportations— a position otherwise known as a complete lack of human empathy—have no real leg to stand on. Their primary rationale, aside from their obsessive fixation on spooky terms like “rule of law,” always comes back to the idea of scarce resources. The problem with that kind of thinking is: We in the United States have plenty of resources—we just choose not to use them effectively.

Let’s tally up our world economy doomsday shelters for a minute here to see just how deep this “we don’t have enough” bullshit runs.

The World Bank estimates that the GDP of the United States, the sum total of all its goods and services produced in one year, is around $16.8 trillion. The next nearest country to the United States in sheer economic might is China at $9.2 trillion. What’s remarkable about that is that China’s population is over four times that of the United States, yet Americans still represent way more economic activity than all of the Chinese combined.

Our perennial foe Russia clocks in at a comparatively meager $2 trillion. Our overly-polite neighbor to the north, Canada, boasts a respectable $1.8 trillion. That, too, is remarkable, mostly because Canada only has a teeny tiny population one eighth that of the United States. Impressive, eh?

Then there’s Mexico. Mexico has a population nearly four times that of Canada, but its GDP is a comparatively meager $1.2 trillion. And the other Central American countries are much worse off than Mexico: Guatemala, $53 billion; Honduras, $18 billion; Nicaragua, $11.2 billion; Costa Rica, $49 billion; and Panama, $42 billion.

In short: The United States blows every single other country on earth out of the water economically. Not only could we take care of our veterans better if we actually meant it, we’d still have plenty of economic resources to take care of each and every U.S. citizen in terms of healthcare, housing, education, and food. Hell, we could even open our borders to everyone in Central America who wishes to come here and provide them with the same kinds of services we provide to American citizens, too.

We could do that—if caring for everyone were our priority as a people. It isn’t.

We have plenty of resources to help keep us safe from various dooms. We just choose not to share. Because it’s easier to imagine the needy and vulnerable as the zombies we need protecting from, rather than admit we’ve been ignoring our moral responsibility to protect them, too. 

I’m a 28-year-old pan-curious married guy from the Midwest about to move to San Francisco. I’ve been with my wife for 10 years (married four), and we’ve started to explore being monogamish. I am also re-exploring my bi attractions.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the opportunities for reinvention that our cross-country move might provide. My wife is GGG and fully supportive, but I still feel apprehensive about getting back out there. I’d like to believe that I am not a complete fool at being charming when it comes to dating, but after 10 years of monogamy, I am worried that my sex knowledge is the sex that works for my wife and me. And there’s the fact that I am very new to guys, with just one shortterm M/M relationship and one terrible hookup under my belt. Any tips for bolstering one’s confidence and making new sexual encounters as fun and unawkward as possible? I want to slut it up in SF, but I don’t know where to start.

Newbie (New Bi?) Slut “My first piece of advice for anyone opening up their relationship is to take things slow,” says Polly Superstar, cofounder and hostess of Kinky Salon, a pansexual, pan-kink, pan-everything party/space/ institution in San Francisco. “Why jump off a cliff when you can take the stairs? Too many people stroll into their first sex club or kink party expecting to find a room full of human Fleshlights at their disposal and are shocked to find a room full of other human beings with desires, preferences and limits of their own. So taking it one step at a time, communicating clearly and being patient isn’t just for you and your wife—it’s for anyone you play with, NNBS, even if you may never see them again.

As for messing around with men ...

“After 10 years of monogamy with a woman, it’s not surprising he’s apprehensive about having sex with men,” says Superstar. “That’s totally normal! But I don’t believe that sexual confidence with new partners is the key to great hookups. There are a gazillion books out there teaching people techniques for self-confidence, but most of them just teach you how to be an asshole. He should just be himself, and be real. Accepting that new sexual encounters can be awkward is the first step in making them less so.”

Superstar took the words right out of my mouth: Acknowledging and embracing the awkwardness is the only way to get past it. You know how a drunk never seems drunker than when he’s trying to pretend he’s not drunk? Pretending you aren’t feeling awkward when you are makes you seem more awkward. So practice saying, “I’m new at this, I’m a little nervous, and I’m feeling a little awkward.” Good people—people you might want to mess around with—will make an effort to put you at ease. Shitty people—people you wouldn’t want to mess around with—will do you the favor of wandering off.

But whether you want to explore with men or women, NNBS, Superstar—who has something of a bias—recommends sex parties. “They’re a great place to explore because there’s no commitment.

You can meet someone, fool around for a bit, and if

you’re not feeling it, you can go do something else.

Obviously I would recommend my event, Kinky Salon, for a newbie bi guy. We are queer-friendly and a great place to meet people. He could even bring his wife along. It’s a lot safer and more communitydriven than the anonymity of a bathhouse, and there are more opportunities to flirt, make out and socialize, which are nice baby steps to take.”

My wife and I are in an open relationship. It started because my wife found flirtatious text messages I sent to a coworker. She confronted me calmly and said she knew our sexual relationship hadn’t been great. She was not that interested in sex, as she’d gained about 50 pounds. I was still attracted to her, but I was rejected half the time. The other half, we had good sex, but nothing new or interesting. She said she was willing to try an open relationship. I had a yearlong relationship with my coworker that ended when my wife and I moved. During that time, my wife never had a sexual experience with anyone else, but she started losing weight and we started having better and more frequent sex. Now I’m not looking for anything on the side. But she has embarked on sexual relationships with several people, including threesomes with her best friend and best friend’s husband, a neighbor and a coworker. I know I sound like an asshole, but I am insanely jealous. I feel like she’s getting to know our new city by sleeping with everyone in the neighborhood. Four partners in two months seems crazy to me. Do I deal with this by ending our agreement to share information about outside partners? Or do I tell her I don’t want an open relationship anymore?

Other People Excluded Now It sounds like you and the wife had different ideas about what your open relationship would look like.

What you were doing with your coworker sounds like poly-style openness—you had an ongoing emotional and sexual relationship—while what your wife is doing with her best friend, her best friend’s husband, the neighbor and her coworker sounds more like fuck-whoever-you-want openness.

Reading between the lines, OPEN, it seems that what really bothers you about your wife’s explorations—“sleeping with everyone in the neighborhood”—is the potential for gossip. Not everyone in an open relationship is comfortable being out about it; some people who aren’t sexually monogamous nevertheless wish to be socially monogamous, i.e., perceived to be monogamous, because they fear being judged or even discriminated against. Or perhaps the issue is this: If people know your wife is sleeping around but don’t know about the open relationship, you may look like a foolish and fooled husband. Those are legitimate concerns, and your wife needs to take your feelings into consideration, and you two need to reopen negotiations. The best compromise may be for your wife to dial it back—fewer partners, more discretion—while simultaneously shifting to a DADT arrangement or, as you put it, ending your agreement to share info about your outside partners. 
