INBOX SPIN CITY

We all need to be part of the solution to a bigger problem: pollution, obesity and community. Biking can be a big part of that solution. DEVON via philadelphiaweekly.com

In response to Randy LoBasso’s feature story about biking in the city My opinion of bicyclists sinks every time I encounter one riding past me while walking on the sidewalk. This morning while reading this print article, I watched a bicyclist riding south on 19th Street jump on the sidewalk to go east on the Parkway rather than use the bike lane around Logan Square. At the same intersection of 19th and the Parkway, I watched a bicyclist run the redlight and almost get clobbered by a car that had the green light. This stuff happens everywhere all over Center City, and Stu Bykofsky is vilified for writing about this! Yeah, there’s a lot of improvement [needed] before bicyclists stop acting like dicks and get the respect they crave. RAY via philadelphiaweekly.com I am as respectful and as responsible a cyclist as I can be, but I will also ride as defensively as I need to in order to avoid getting injured. Anyone who has ridden a bicycle in Philly for even one day has seen what we have to deal with on a regular basis: car doors opening quickly into oncoming traffic, pedestrians walking against the signal without paying attention, taxis driving too close or too aggressively, cars turning across bike lanes without signalling or glancing over. And somehow, through all of it, cyclists are far more likely to end up with a bad rep, which is dangerous in accident situations where police and insurance companies

As a driver and city worker, bikers have taught me to hate them. I have never closed a street to traffic in South Philly and not have a plethora of bikers ride through the cones or barricades. I can’t dodge these fools and keep them from riding into open manholes and do my work at the same time. MERF via philadelphiaweekly.com

refuse to take our sides of the story seriously. In July, I was seriously injured by a car that ran a red light. Despite my own account and those of several witnesses, everyone seems to be willing to take the side of the motorist. Something needs to change. EMILY via philadelphiaweekly.com A fantastic and well-written, balanced article. Everyone needs to play a part to make all transportation in the city safer. The No. 1 motorist that causes the problems? Taxi drivers. They are reckless and will get where they need to go as quickly as they can, even if it means less safety for their passengers, pedestrians on the road, other motorists and cyclists.

I recently traveled to Montreal, clearly a city more well prepared for bicyclists. Next year, when bike rentals come to Philly, bicycling is going to increase dramatically. I drive a car mostly, ride sometimes. I rarely have problems with cars when I ride. Believe it or not, I see drivers much more patient than cyclists. Cyclists in Philly tend to have an air of entitlement and ownership. Like when you see a pack of them lined up side-by-side, taking over the driving lane. How many times do you see bikers riding in the road on Kelly Drive or Main Street in Manayunk when there is an entire road built just for them 10 feet away? Then again, is it possible that people that live in Philadelphia are just more aggressive than people in, say, Montreal? Let’s face it, Philly: Most of us are assholes. No, it’s not “Rick James, bitch”—it’s Dave Chappelle, with no tolerance for hecklers.

WHAT’S HAPPENING — BEFORE IT HAPPENS ... COMEDY

Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival It’s hard to believe that 10 way-too-brief years ago, everyone and their mama was obsessed with Dave Chappelle and his eponymous Comedy Central smash Chappelle’s Show. We were all “Fuck yo’ couch!” and “Cocaine’s a helluva drug.” (A million thank-yous, Dave, for “Charlie Murphy’s True Hollywood Stories.”) Midway through its third hit season, at the height of it all, Chappelle walked away, with seemingly no interest in fostering a comedy career that, by nearly all indicators, was booming. A sojourn of self-discovery—or self-recovery, really—to South Africa, a fantastic hip-hop concert film and a few memorable stand-up starts and stops later, it looks like Chappelle’s taking a calculated walk back, one that’s got audiences across the country excited and ready (Maybe in the case of those clowns in Hartford, too damn excited.) Funny or Die’s big ole mini-tour and comedy fest hits Camden this week, with Chappelle and the Flight of the Conchord brothers as headliners, and its comedians-crammed trailer will leave you with a single question: Are you ready to laugh until your sides ache?! If you hadn’t noticed, Funny or Die has become a bona fide success. What went from silly little clips of comedy and mini-sketches became entire series, features and the birthplace of viral celebrity moments containing a sublime mix of genius and smut. Their website is rich with hours of entertainment, and a tumble down the Flight of the Conchords k-hole yields nothing but delight. Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement are so smart that their deadpan wit and mastery of the stone-faced, outrageously silly anthem comes off as next-level entertainment. Call this the comedy event of the summer. To those lucky enough to attend, we wish you health after your gut busts open. / BILL CHENEVERT Fri., Sept. 6, 5pm. $30-$95.75. The Julie Ruin Just the other day, someone was asking me whatever happened to Kathleen Hanna. This friend and I had watched Not Another Teen Movie, in which Bikini Kill—which Hanna, of course, fronted—is wonderfully referenced as being the favorite band of main character Janey Briggs. Later, we hear Kill’s “Rebel Girl” as Briggs paints a portrait of her family. “What’s up with that band?” she asks me. Well, here’s what I told her. “The punk feminist—and perhaps the baddest-ass person in the land—it happens, is still at it,” I said. “She’s actually fronting the Brooklyn-based noise project The Julie Ruin, whose first album, Run Fast, dropped this week. And the first songs released from it are decidedly awesome.” In a recent Pitchfork interview, Hanna noted that her new band’s reception has already been greater than Bikini Kill’s was originally. “We’re being so much more appreciated right now in 2013 than we were in 1994,” she said. “History’s on our side.” And why is that? “I’m just excited that it’s not that weird to be a woman in a band anymore.” As are we all, sister. And then, to my friend, the icing: “You know who else is in the band? Former Kill bassist Kathi Wilcox.” To miss their Philly show, I said, “would be a huge disservice to the Janey Briggs in us all.” / RANDY LOBASSO

XPN presents this free concert event, capping off its super-cool Mississippi Blues Project, a yearlong dive into the music of the Delta. The festivities kick off with popular host David Dye spinning Funky Friday, his weekly foray into the realm of boogie, until 7 p.m. From there, Blues & Beyond host Jonny Meister gets the atmosphere started by pumping out the blues jams. Finally, at 8:30 p.m., comes a live performance from none other than legendary harmonica player James Cotton. A student of Sonny Boy Williamson, Cotton got his real start in 1954 when he replaced Junior Wells as Muddy Waters’ harp ace, an integral role that he filled with power and precision for a dozen years. Not one to play sidekick forever, he eventually released his debut album for Verve Records in 1967. The 1970s saw Cotton’s peak as a bandleader, becoming known to the world as a bouncy, sweaty, whirling bluesman, not only wailing on the harmonica with his signature style, but utilizing his roaring vocals as well. Due to throat problems, Cotton cannot sing like he used too, but he’s still an absolute powerhouse behind the instruments. And his vocal issues haven’t appeared to slow his recorded output at all, seeing as how his latest effort, Cotton Mouth Man, was released less than four months ago at the tender age of 77. / ANTHONY TRIVELLI 5pm. One Year Installation There were 331 murders in Philadelphia in 2012, most due to gun violence. With those tragedies in mind, MamaCita, a co-op of local mothers in the area, put together the art installation project One Year, being shown as part of this year’s Fringe Festival. This display showcases hundreds—331, to be exact—of wire vessels, each representing a murder in the city, to combat public apathy toward urban violence. Comprised of Julie Mann, Karen Hunter McLaughlin, Brenda Howell, Kimberly Mehler and Janice Hayes-Cha, MamaCita notes how the black wire sculptures use “beautifully intricate shapes to portray each loss as a complex individual, while each vessel’s shadow speaks to the inter-connectedness of victim/perpetrator, mourner/mourned, body/soul.” While One Year was exhibiting at the Painted Bride early last year, highlighting 2011’s senseless murders, the women continued to handcraft the pieces through the end of 2012 as each violent death was reported in the news. “It’s not a good year,” Mehler told NewsWorks. “When I would sit home and make a vessel, it would be very meditative. I would say a prayer for this unnamed person.” The opening night of the 2013 installation will feature spoken word performances, as well as singing and drumming by grieving moms in support groups coached by Jemma Kistow~Zenquis and vocalists Rhetta Morgan and Marcy Davis. / R.L.

11 Critical Home Inspection Traps to be Aware of Weeks Before Listing Your Home for Sale Philadelphia- According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That’s why it’s critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make reasonable

pre-inspection yourself if you know what you’re looking for, and knowing what you’re looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. A Jazz Tribute: Celebrating the Life of John Coltrane Very few names are as synonymous with jazz music as John Coltrane, the legendary saxophonist who helped pioneer free-form jazz, working with greats like Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. And like many other musicians, the years of Trane’s early life and career were spent in Philadelphia, the city that helped shape his one-of-a-kind talent and incomparable style. It was during 1952 to 1958, while residing at 1511 N. 33rd St., a row house overlooking Fairmount Park in Strawberry Mansion, that Coltrane recorded and released his seminal second album Blue Train, a record influenced by his lush urban surroundings and one that continues to shape jazz music. The LP’s title track, “Moment’s Notice” and “Lazy Bird” have become standards, utilizing his unique chord substitution cycles that became known as Coltrane changes. And the address he considered home back then is still open as a national historic landmark for visitors. This Sunday, for the third year, Philadelphians will gather to celebrate Trane’s legacy with an outdoor festival featuring top jazz talents. Local tenor sax hero Sam Reed, pianist Alfie Pollitt and bassist Buster Williams are among the veterans slated to be in attendance. All-star groups Urban Guerilla Orchestra and the Grover Washington Tribute Legacy Band, saxophonist Umar Raheem, trumpeter Leon Jordan Jr. and more will join them. There will be food vendors, of course, as well as crafts, at this all-ages event. Jazz fans, don’t miss it. / DREW O’MEARA

Laura Mvula Laura Mvula’s got the goods. Her debut LP came out just a half-dozen months ago to great acclaim; it hit the top of the UK R&B charts but hasn’t yet caught on in a mainstream sense here in the States. Part of the reason could be that she’s sophisticated, smart, subtle, and her music doesn’t necessarily set dance floors afire. Her first three singles from the rich Sing to the Moon really pop with infectious energy: “She” is a little more pensive and hushed, but “That’s Alright” and “Green Garden” are, well, adorable—the latter bouncing with handclaps and sparkling with bells, almost like the ecstatic moment Feist had with “Sea Lion Woman.” Mvula’s not in unwelcome company alongside the likes of the darling Lianne La Havas, Jessie Ware and Laura Marling, all UK exports that we’re grateful to have visit our shores, rock our stages and share their beauty and wit. Her voice is so clean, powerful and raw, sometimes it sounds like she’s holding it back, ‘cause if she wanted to, she could blow the speakers out or pop your eardrums with that full-throated wail. Well, that’s what she’s likely to do at World Café Live tonight: knock a bunch of people on their asses with that soulful set of pipes. And where better? It really is the perfect venue for her unique blend of folk, soul and R&B to shine as brightly as she does. / B.C. 8pm. Sold out. With King. amid hoagies,

yogIs Philly does a lot of yoga. This week, it coalesces into one giant block party. by Jazmyn D. Burton // feedback@philadelphiaweekly.com

S

tudents dressed in comfortable yoga gear line the walls of DIG YOGA in South Philadelphia, waiting for their teacher to arrive. Sunshine pours through the skylight ceiling as Mariel Freeman enters, all grace and confidence. The first thing you notice, as she takes a seat in front of a golden statue of a dancing Shiva, is her bright smile and deep-set dimples. Class begins, and her soothing voice floats across the room, encouraging students to fall into a meditation that challenges them to open their hearts to the power, beauty and possibility that exists in every moment. “I’m in a breakbeat stage,” she admits before moving the class from meditation to asana with a classic Eric B. and Rakim track. In no time, the rhythm hits ‘em, and Freeman’s charges forget about the burning in their quads and the tension in their shoulders, floating to the sound of her voice, riding the wave of energy that begins to fill the room. Everyone comes to their mat with a different story. For Freeman, her interest in yoga peaked while at studying holistic health and healing at the University of Massachusetts. “I was carrying around a lot of negative feelings,” she says today. “I was feeling energetically dark and heavy and confused. Then I started taking classes with Deb Neubauer at Smith College. It felt like she showed me where the light switch was and taught me how to consistently make it lighter and brighter so that I could learn to see more clearly. That is what made me fall in love with yoga.” For some, yoga is purely exercise, a way to tone the legs and thighs, lift the buttocks

and attain that relaxed glow. For others, it goes beyond sport—it’s an inquiry into the deepest parts of one’s inner soul, a journey of self-exploration that tightens the mind, spirit and body. No matter where you fall on the spectrum—or if you’re even on the spectrum at all—it’s hard to deny that the practice of yoga has become more than a trend. Every day, both locally and across the nation, men and women pour into studios and surrender to the power of this ancient wellness system with roots in Hindu philosophy. In 2012, a study by Yoga Journal estimated that approximately 20.4 million Americans participate in some form of yoga, and the community is continuing to grow. This May, claiming our denizens are 42 percent more likely to engage in the practice than the overall population, Forbes magazine named Philadelphia one of the top five most yogafriendly cities in the country. The word “yoga,” which means “to yoke” in Sanskrit, has become a generic term for the physical part of an entire system of living recorded in the Yoga Sutra by the ancient sage Patanjali. Within the Yoga Sutra, Patanjali lays out an eight-step process toward living a blissful life. Yoga asana, the physical yoga practiced in the west, is just one step on the path toward enlightenment. Yoga asana has had a profound effect on millions of Americas, says Jeff Krasno, cofounder of the traveling Wanderlust Festival, an annual yoga gathering held in lush outdoor settings, complete with hikes, farm-totable meals, lectures and films. “Yoga studios are like bars for the sober,” Krasno tells PW. “People are discovering and

cultivating new communities through the practice. Studios are becoming community centers; a place where you can go to be around like-minded people and find some level of commonality in a world that is so disconnected.” From the traditional to the experimental, such centers are popping up around the city faster than you can learn how to pronounce your sun-salutation in Sanskrit. Wanderlust Festivals are usually four-day events held in off-the-grid mountain resorts and exotic locations—among them, Turtle Bay in Oahu, Hawaii’s North Shore and Squaw Valley in North Lake Tahoe, CA—but this Saturday, Wanderlust will make its way into Philadelphia for a one-day “Yoga Block Party” event at the Piazza at Schmidt’s. Expect live DJs, breakdancers and good local food paired with free yoga classes and informational sessions on reducing your carbon footprint, the importance of buying local and how you can

help stop our looming ecological crisis. It’s no surprise that yoga in America has grown over the last decade. With constant access to Facebook, e-mail, cellphones, on-demand television, et al, many people find themselves caught in a cycle of endless, empty connectivity. Its popularity may be partially due to the fact that it allows its partakers a moment to center, focus and disengage from this virtual reality we find ourselves living in, Krasno says. “To learn to live outside of 160 characters is incredibly important right now,” he said. “Yoga gives people centeredness and depth to make better decisions in life. Making decisions and choices from a place of presence can only be better for the planet in the long run.” “Yoga is an engine that is going to be hard to slow down. In an era that is experiencing record levels of diabetes, the extinction of plants and animals, a healthcare crisis …

there is still a hopeful part of the world, a hopeful segment of America, that seems to be moving toward living a conscious life.” Wanderlust began in 2009, when Krasno, his wife, Schuyler Grant, founder of New York City’s Kula Yoga Project, and their friend, Sean Hoess, decided to offer the yoga communityat-large an opportunity to come together for some environmentally responsible fun. “The block party idea is a little bit of an experiment for us; it’s free, it’s urban,” says Krasno. “The goal for us was to create a community around mindful living, but we also want to make sure we can reach everyone. The more people we reach, the more diverse our core, the better planet we can begin to build together.” Part of the Piazza event’s appeal is how it encourages change on a local and communal level. As Philadelphia becomes the new epicenter for budding yoga practitioners, a new league of teachers—including Freeman, Alexandra Holmes and Simon Park, who’ll be teaching at Wanderlust’s opening and closing sessions on Saturday—is sharing their unique styles with students across the city. Freeman started leading classes in 2004 after her first 200-hour Anusara teacher training with Todd Norian. But she didn’t stop there. Instead of heading to the nearest studio to lead classes, she decided to immerse herself in learning to be an instructor. “The (Anusara) training was profoundly life-changing, but I did not feel prepared to actually teach,” she says. “There was so much more to learn, and I needed to practice teaching, so I continued to do teacher trainings every year. After a while, I transitioned from a student in training to an assistant to a teacher trainer.” When she’s not in class, Freeman works to sustain Shot Tower coffee on Fifth and Christian streets in Queen Village. As co-owner of the coffee shop, she hopes to create a place where people can experience a sense of belonging, a comfort she believes is vital for the overall health and growth of Philadelphia. “Coffee-shop culture connects neighbors and builds community; it builds connection. Yoga is also all about creating meaningful, sustainable connections,” she says. “I’ve met a lot of people working in coffee shops that would probably not consider stepping one foot inside a yoga studio. But yoga, the true yoga, is happening in the coffee shop all the time. Yoga is not just asana. Yoga is cultivating meaningful relationships and lasting connections. And that can happen on a mat or in front of a cup of coffee.” The studio is already hot with humidity left behind by the previous class as new students enter Dhyana Yoga’s Rittenhouse space, each rolling out their mats in preparation for an evening of

flow with Alexandra Holmes. Holmes greets everyone with a smile, sweeping away stray strands of her asymmetrical pixie from her face. Philippine-born with Philly-girl swag, on the surface, she looks like a poster girl for American hipster chic. But underneath the trendy exterior is a woman who takes her yoga very seriously. As class starts, the petite, powerful Holmes leads students through a rhythmic, dancelike yoga sequence, stopping frequently to realign and adjust students who need assistance achieving the posture, while never missing a beat. For Holmes, yoga began as a way to crosstrain while working toward her bachelor’s degree at Virginia Commonwealth University, but the practice soon became her passion. “I was in college for dance and choreography, but my body always hurt. I came to yoga a little bit broken looking for a way to come out of pain,” she says. “It was so refreshing to do something that didn’t require looking in the mirror trying to be perfect and instead turn inside as a way to heal.” She approaches her classes with a downto-earth, friendly style that can put even the most nervous student at ease. Influenced by her dance background, she likes to keep her yoga sessions flowing and has been known to soundtrack her classes with an eclectic mix of the Beatles, Miguel, Angelique Kidjo and Led Zeppelin. Her main concern is meeting her students where they are and giving them something to come back for. “I may occasionally throw in a little Jay Z,” she says, “just so there’s something for everyone.” After a brief encounter with ovarian cancer in 2005, Holmes found a deeper meaning in her yoga that she continues to share with her students. Although her illness prevented her from taking on some of yoga’s more challenging postures, she found comfort in the spiritual tenants of the philosophy. The ability to still her mind, become more aware of her body and work her way toward wellness became her focus. “The practice is always evolving; there’s always something to learn or refine,” she says. “It helps me gain confidence yet stay humble, and it’s such a good way to manage stress. The practice takes time, but it’s worth it. Because you really do get what you give. ” The humble Holmes says she’s not alone in her attempt to keep yoga an open and accessible practice in Philadelphia. She’s proud of our city’s yogafriendliness and plans to continue working to keep it that way. “As a yoga community at large, I think we’re pretty down to earth,” she says. “There aren’t really any divas, and we try to keep it real instead of pretending to be something we think people who are into yoga should be.”

“You won’t find Simon,” says yoga teacher Malik Wilson, “unless Simon wants you to find him.” For the last six years, Simon Park has been a bit of a mystery man, floating around the world, never staying in one place long enough for anyone to get used to seeing him. His mentor, Shiva Rea, calls him “The Flying Nomad.” In an online interview, she jokes with a bashful Park, who avoids looking directly into the camera, about how he seems

known in the yoga circles for her ethereal, soul stirring, dance-like technique. Something about Rea’s style struck a chord with him. Meeting her “changed his life forever,” Park says, and propelled him into a deep study of both Iyengar and Ashtanga. In 2011, Simon completed his first extensive European tour and returned to his native Korea to teach at the first Korea Yoga Conference. For Park, the experience was the “completion of a very long cycle.”

Considering a Wanderlust session with one of these instructors? Here’s what you’ll get: MARIEL FREEMAN Years practicing: 13. Years teaching: 10. What to expect: Freeman will lead the first 90-minute sequence of the festival alongside her close friend Alexandra Holmes and mentor Sue Elkind. Freeman’s playful style of instruction and focus on body alignment makes for an uplifting class that will both challenge your body and nourish your soul. Her lighthearted nature is sure to balance well with Elkind’s masterful philosophy and Holmes’ graceful sequencing.

ALEXANDRA HOLMES

Years practicing: 11. Years teaching: 10. What to expect:

A class with Holmes will definitely work up a sweat. Known for her quick pace and fluid, dance-like sequencing, expect to stretch and bend in a very rhythmic manner. Don’t let her decade of experience in the yoga game intimidate you. She may throw in a few backbends, but her classes are suitable for both newbies and old pros. Holmes will teach alongside Freeman and Elkind.

SIMON PARK

Years

practicing: 18. Years teaching: 15. What to expect: Park will teach the final yoga session of the festival. Expect a high-energy class that mixes elements of martial arts-inspired fluidity with postures that challenge your arms and abs. Catch him if you can; it may be a while before he returns to the city. Following Wanderlust, Park is headed to Europe, where he’ll lead classes in Paris and Crete, Greece before heading out on a Yogascapes cruise down the Turkish coast. (Jazmyn Burton)

to only be reachable telepathically. “The only way I can get Simon is by T-mail,” Rea teases. Park definitely lives up to his nickname. He doesn’t care for social media. He uses e-mail only to stay connected with loved ones, and there’s no secretary in charge of his calendar. He’s a drifter, a memory, a wisp of fluidity and grace that only a few privileged souls have an opportunity to connect with. One month he’s in D.C., and the next month he’s in Tulum, Mexico, followed by week-long stays all over Europe and Asia working to share his unique yoga style, which combines elements of Vinyasa, Iyengar and Ashtanga yoga methods with Thai massage and martial arts. “I feel like I’ve been looping around the earth in a slick space suit like my man (Keith Richards) ... Catch me if you can as I drop into Atha Yoga, Zurich this weekend,” Park posted on his Facebook page back in late June. Since then, he’s been difficult to keep up with. “I’ve always been naturally curious,” Park says. “Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I’ve been traveling since I was a kid.” Born in the rural mountains of Kwangju, Korea, Park was raised surrounded by nature. Mountains and rivers were his playground until he moved to Philadelphia with his parents in 1978, where he learned to assimilate to American culture quickly. He even wanted a career in cultural anthropology. Park reconnected with his Asian roots while studying at the University of California, Los Angeles. It was there where he met Rea,

“When I started, I didn’t see any other Asian people in my classes, but that’s changing,” he said. “You can get stuck in thinking that yoga is just for upper middle class white people, but that’s not true. There are people of all cultures, all over the globe, practicing yoga. And even more out there who are curious.” Park watched the yoga scene blossom and take shape while practicing in Philadelphia in the late ‘90s. He says the move to a more cohesive community is due largely in part to the work of Diana D’Amato-Vitarelli, owner of Dhayna Yoga. He recalls when D’AmatoVitarelli would stand on the corner of Broad and Walnut streets, a few blocks from her studio, passing out flyers, encouraging people to trade their daily hoagie for some daily yoga. “When people ask me about Philly and yoga, I always say it’s a small but dedicated crowd,” says Park. “There have been times when the growth here seems slow, but that goes along with the character and personality of Philly. Philadelphians aren’t ones to jump on the bandwagon, but once they do, once they realize the value [of something], they’re dedicated to it, with passion. They practice hard. Yoga is embedded here.” n

haven’t seen the World Health Organization numbers, but I’ll hazard a guess that there aren’t all that many people who suffer from Celiac disease in Xi’an, China. And I’m positive that this whole gluten-free-by-choice thing among non-sufferers won’t catch on there. Because based on the addictively flavored, fabulously textured food at Xi’an Sizzling Woks, it just wouldn’t be possible: No one would eat much if they did. This region’s food, until now more or less underrepresented in Philadelphia’s Chinatown, is hearty fare, the sort of stick-to-theribs procession of dishes that tingles the tongue and fills the belly in equal measure. Biang biang noodles, each one as long as the entire track of the former R5 and jauntily ragged along the edges, practically springs back against the molars with the first few chews. Glistening with a deeply savory, unexpectedly refreshing ginger scallion sauce, they are, for $5.95 a bowl, among the great bargains in the neighborhood. “Special Ma-la hot,” all shimmering red like some sort of liquid ruby, and with chili flakes

clinging to the edge of the ceramic vessel, contained an entire universe of treats: Cabbage and broccoli and slippery vermicelli and beef like a shot of umami straight to the heart. And then there’s the glorious liang pi, a heaving helping of chewy noodles, glutenous wheat nubs like some kind of soaked bread, thin-sliced lengths of cucumber, and a sauce as bracingly piquant-spicy as any in the ‘hood. Have a bowl at noon, and don’t even think about dinner till 7 o’clock or so. It’s all served in a pleasant if basic space (though I love the trompe l’oeuil sky-andclouds painted onto the ceiling) with service that runs the gamut from helpful to less so. No matter: Xi’an Sizzling Woks is a very welcome addition to Chinatown, and already a crucial part of my regular rotation. 

thoughtful. So, too, were the bitterballen, gorgeous fried meatballs of roux-creamy braised pork lifted with nutmeg and mustard. They arrived four to the order, a neat little procession of rich, palate-coating goodness. One of them had developed a crack in its carapace, and the impossibly moist center had begun to ooze out: one of the sexiest things I’d seen all month. A special of chicken croquettes, also perfectly fried, embodied a different side of the concept, seasoned with onion powder and thyme and based on the previous day’s impeccable rotisserie chicken. FITLER DINING ROOM 2201 Spruce St. 215.732.3331. fitlerdiningroom.com Cuisine: American bistro. Potato gnocchi melt on the tongue with the slightest pressure, bathing the palate in all the Chartreuse butter perfume they’ve absorbed. So, too, have the escargots studding the plate. The crunch of hazelnuts, the melting gnocchi, the springtime brightness of ramps (wild onion) and that phenomenal butter were more than enough to pull it all off. A salad of roasted beets were livened up with pickled ones alongside, and the tension between the sweetly acidic latter and the sweetly earthy former found its counterpart in the intersection of buttermilk dressing and mushrooms, including maitakes and black truffles. Globe artichoke soup was a hearty flavored wonder, complicated beautifully with La Quercia prosciutto and fresh garbanzos. (B.F.) NOORD 1046 Tasker St. 267.909.9704. noordphilly.com Cuisine: Dutch-centric Northern European. The rabbit leg confit maintained a moistness and delicacy that the notoriously difficult-to-cook meat rarely does. Forked with zuurkool (think of sauerkraut) as well as a coin of smoked pork sausage and maybe a tender carrot slice, this was as hearty as it was

STRANGELOVE’S 216 S. 11th St. 215.873.0404. strangelovesbeerbar.com Cuisine: Southern-inspired gastropub. Fried catfish bites were lovely on their own and even better when dragged through a spicy-tart remoulade. Mushroom torta, constructed on a base of Mexican-style flatbread, proved to be a clever reworking of the more familiar ones that have grown so tired lately. And its topping, like the best of the dishes here, managed to be both restrained and rewarding: arugula, lemon, a truffle vinaigrette and a spread of butter-cooked corn pureed with honey. Even the fried green tomatoes, if their crown of crabmeat ravigote, tomatoes and cucumber was a touch too wet, ultimately won me over with the sheer pleasure of its flavors. (B.F.)

A Reward All Its Own Bounty Killer proves Henry Saine is the director to watch with this imaginative modern riff on Corman’s Death Race 2000. By Sean Burns // sburns@philadelphiaweekly.com

I

magine if Elysium had a cooler older brother who dropped out of school and gets in trouble with the cops all the time, and you’ll get the gist of director Henry Saine’s Bounty Killer, a cheerfully disreputable riff on contemporary class warfare full of hot chicks and splattering heads. Harkening back to the irreverent, ultra-violent Z-grade movies that producer Roger Corman filled drive-in screens with back in the 1970s, this is schlock, to be sure. But it’s schlock carried off with wit and fine style. In the not-too-distant future, corporations have finally gone and destroyed the entire world. The 1-percenters are now on the run across this scorched planet, hunted down by the bounty killers of the title and brought to bloody justice for their white-collar crimes. Amusingly enough, our bounty killers are treated as rock stars by the teeming hordes in starving shantytowns. They sign autographs, pose for pictures and sit for interviews with The Wasteland Times. (Amid all this chaos and destruction, it’s a relief to see that newspapers somehow survived.) Drifter (Matthew Marsden) used to be everybody’s favorite. A sullen, shotgun-toting brooder who could have been ordered directly from the Mad Max catalog, he’s found his popularity eclipsed as of late by Mary Death (Christian Pitre). She’s his former protégé who struck out on her own, leaving only a knife in Drifter’s spleen for him to remember her by. Mary Death tools around the desert in a yellow muscle-car with a pinup portrait of herself painted on the roof, always clad in go-go boots outfitted with lethal accessories. As far as wish-fulfillment fantasies go, there’s something undeniably cathartic about watching sleazy bankers and real-estate hucksters meeting spectacularly grisly ends at the hands of populist heroes. Bounty Killer’s politics aren’t particularly thoughtful, but they’re awfully satisfying in a caveman sense. Were that the only joke, it would wear out its welcome fairly quickly. Luckily, Saine, who wrote the screenplay with Jason Dodson and Colin Ebeling, has aspirations toward the epic and a knack for world-building. The picture is packed with clever inventions and asides. I chuckled at the concept of “gun caddies,” who, as you might expect from their job title, follow around the bounty killers with large bags full of firearms, loading and prepping them as if on a golf course. There’s a stagecoach drawn by motorcycles instead of horses, perfectly in keeping with the film’s junkyard Western aesthetic. But maybe the best gag of all is that, as far as currency goes in this ravaged dystopia, a six pack of PBR tall boys are more precious than gold. A bounty comes down on Drifter’s head, outing him as a former CEO. Mary Death aims to collect, only gradually realizing that these are all just the sinister machinations of his ex-wife (one-time Terminatrix Kristanna Loken), a hard-core Randian aiming to start a new corporate reign in the aftermath. She entertainingly explains how the apoca-

Road warrior: Matthew Marsden gets in on the action in Henry Saine’s clever, gore-filled Bounty Killer.

lypse was actually a great business move because it got rid of all the unions, government regulation and minimum wage. Gary Busey is Loken’s sidekick, because of course Gary Busey is in this movie. Working resourcefully on what appears to have been a microscopic budget, Saine serves up action sequences that far outclass a lot of what we see from his Hollywood counterparts, at least in terms of pacing and spatial geography. A mid-movie chase with the aforementioned stagecoach gets all Road Warrior for a little while, making one wonder what Saine might be able to pull off if he ever gets more than two pennies to rub together. Of course, the special effects are often laughably cheap and the gore cranked up to cartoonish levels of crimson. Wanton decapitations abound. The acting is almost uniformly terrible, with the blank Marsden vanishing beneath Drifter’s scowl and leather, while Pitre’s Mary Death can handle daredevil stuntwork and elaborate fight scenes, only to be undone by the simplest line of expository dialogue. Best not to mention the braying comic relief from Barak Hardley’s overzealous gun caddy or ER’s Abraham Benrubi, but Loken is actually quite good. Somebody should put her in the next Atlas Shrugged movie. With the funky soundtrack, retro costume designs and hilarious disregard for human life, Saine is obviously shooting for a modern riff on Corman’s Death Race 2000. Not an ignoble aim, if you ask me. The fact that he gets as close as he does is a testament to imagination and ingenuity; this is a filmmaker to watch. Besides, as proudly low-rent and meat-headed as Bounty Killer may be, it’s still not as stupid as Elysium. 

all the guaranteed provisions and marketing strategies that even a small label can offer, with his sights set instead on building his reputation should a larger label come knocking. “The metric for success and market value right now is your social network,” he says. “If you want to get a meeting with Sony tomorrow, you either need to know somebody who really, really cares about your music, or you need 150,000 views on your YouTube videos and 50,000 Twitter followers. We’re not interested in having that conversation with labels right now because they’re not going to be giving me anywhere near the type of deal I’m looking for, which is creative freedom. Right now, we’re trying to be self-powered until we get large enough to sit on the other side of a bargaining table and make some demands.” Stewart appears to be relying, either by fortune or divine design, on the strength of his mic skills at a time when the importance of real ability is starting to matter in hip-hop again. As his hot latest single boasts, “I’m not from Brooklyn, but I’ll holler, “Booker, booker, pick a book up”/I’m not a back packer, there’s just words you need to look up/Kitchen’s getting hotter from the verses that I cook up/Now I’m pushing product, SAMlive got the hook-up.” “Creativity shouldn’t be bound,” he says, flicking away cigarette ash. “I think you should be as creative as possible and as talented as possible. And showcase that to the best of your abilities.” 

ichael Stewart needs his coffee and cigarettes. The prolific 24-year-old MC, better known by his stage name Mic Stew, began puffing on Marlboro Reds while a freshman at Temple University, finding that it helped him write lyrics. With an upcoming Big L-inspired EP due for release this fall, and his well-received debut LP, Peaceworld, already in the books, it doesn’t look like Mic Stew will be kicking his habit anytime soon. Peaceworld, which was released this past April, has earned positive reviews from local print and radio outlets, but as good as that album is, Stewart is still best known for his formidable freestyle ability. He jumped onto the national radar when he won last year’s Red Bull EmSee Freestyle Battle, one of the biggest freestyle events in the country, which forced competitors to include randomized words into their raps. Thanks to his signature quick wit and natural flow, Stewart was awarded $10,000, along with the recognition and performing opportunities that winning the event entailed. And, in case there’s any doubt of the battle’s validity, David Banner, Big K.R.I.T., and none other than DJ Premier were its judges. “What Red Bull did was cut the fat,” Stewart tells PW. “It’s been very helpful in legitimating me as a professional. It opened up the doors to a lot of sponsorship opportunities and a lot of quality bookings that before I had to fight for. Now, they’re coming to me.” Among his exploits since winning the Red Bull EmSee contest are stints sharing the stage with the Roots’ Questlove, playing at the Firefly Festival, and he’ll head back to Delaware this month for the FoxTail Fest, where he’ll be performing alongside Machine Gun Kelly and Travi$ Scott. Tonight in Rittenhouse Square, he’ll be sharing the stage with hip-hop luminary Cee Knowledge (formerly Doodlebug of Digable Planets fame) and his Cosmic Funk Orchestra for the final installation of this year’s PW Concerts in the Park series. Citing the Fugees, Tupac and Jay Z as early influences, Stewart began freestyling when he was just 12. The unassuming MC, who grew up in Royersford, Pa., has always had a profound love of music, thanks in large part to parents who, he says, danced to blues in the house and “sang in the car and all that shit.” By the time he moved to Philly to attend Temple, Stewart had a very clear plan in place: conquer the city’s hip-hop network. When his nose wasn’t buried in history and physics textbooks, he was busy performing at any club or venue that would host him. As it turns out, Temple may have been the most important choice for him, and not just academically. Stewart credits Temple’s “Freestyle Fridays,” an unofficial weekly cipher—lingo for a group freestyle session—that meets at the campus landmark Bell Tower, to his ascent up the Philadelphia hip-hop scene. “People were starting to hear about that all over the city and come out to see,” says Stewart, pausing to take a long drag on his cigarette. In the wake of his battle victories, Stewart has eschewed the record label path, choosing to self-release his material, including Peaceworld. The move is a bold one: He is forgoing

Settle this for us, Dan? Which is the bigger ask: a one-time, once-in-a-lifetime threesome or regular (and elaborate) bondage sessions? Ruling On Private Enquiry Required

boyfriend: the shit in your shoes (those lovely feet of yours) and the shit between your ears (your supportive, sex-positive attitude about his kinks). Have fun.

Let me guess: Your partner is into bondage, ROPER, and you’re not. But you’ve been doing the hard work of tying him/her/some-other-point-alongthe-gender-spectrum up for months, years or decades ... and the partner you’ve gone to great lengths to indulge (and restrain) regards your request for a once-in-a-lifetime/standard-issuefantasy threesome as too much to ask of him/her/ SOPATGS. My ruling: Regular and intense bondage sessions are the bigger ask in terms of time and effort—particularly if I guessed wrong, ROPER, and you’re the person who’s getting tied up and bondage isn’t your thing—but a threesome, even just one, is going to be a bigger ask emotionally for most people. While the former requires patience and endurance, the latter requires revisiting feelings about monogamy, sharing your partner with another person, etc. It’s a smaller ask in terms of time and effort, certainly, but a higher hurdle in fee-fee terms.

At my 50th birthday party, my older brother announced to everyone—including my new wife, our parents and his teenage son—that I used to wear women’s clothes. I was humiliated and deeply hurt. I wanted to punch him and tell all his secrets. But I didn’t. Now I am planning to humiliate him on a special occasion of his. Childish, I know, but what else can I do to save face? Devastated In Denver

I am a single hetero male. I had a female FWB for several months. She started dating a new guy, and he asked that she stop talking to me. That seems like a red flag. If he’d asked that we stop having sex, that would be one thing, but asking her to completely end the friendship seems like a warning sign of a controller. Am I overreacting? Does that seem like a red flag to you? Should I say anything to her? Can’t Understand Lover’s Loss Isolating a romantic partner from her family and friends is a red flag—that’s a classic abuser move— but asking a girl you’ve just started dating to cut off a friend she’s been fucking for months isn’t necessarily an abuser move. If he’s asking her to cut non-FWB friends and family members in addition to you, CULL, then it’s a red flag, and you should speak to her. But if it’s only you, CULL, then it’s just some garden-variety insecurity on the new BF’s part. Let your friend know that you hope you can reestablish your friendship once her new BF is feeling more secure or her BF is out of the picture— whichever comes first. My boyfriend and I have been having lots of problems. I am way too critical, and he has “erectile dysfunction,” aka issues getting and staying hard. But I recently discovered that he can get hard in an instant by licking my feet or using them to masturbate! This is great! He is finally opening up sexually! I want to explore this with him and let him know that his sexuality is a beautiful thing. But I can’t find enough information on the Internet on how to support him. Truly Over Erotic Slump Your boyfriend doesn’t have “erectile dysfunction,” TOES, and never did. Your BF, like millions of other men who are presumed to have ED, simply wasn’t doing the things that turn him on. Now that he is—now that your feet are in play—he doesn’t have any issues getting and staying hard. And you don’t need anything off the Internet, TOES. You already have everything you need to support your

You could’ve saved face in the moment by laughing and saying something like this: “Yeah, I was quite the little pervert back then, bro, but weren’t we all at that age?” Your parents, your new wife, your brother’s son, et al. would’ve imagined your brother doing something much, much worse than wearing women’s clothes. But it’s too late for that comeback. (Avoir l’esprit de l’escalier, right?) So my advice now: Pick a special, solemn occasion—your brother’s anniversary party, midnight mass, his son’s graduation—and show up in full fuckin’ drag. I’m a 33-year-old lesbian. A year ago, my partner and I split up for five months. During that time, I dated a girl while my partner engaged in multiple sexual relationships—all with men. We ended up getting back together. One problem keeps me from moving on: I am the only woman my partner has ever been with, and I can’t stop thinking about the fact that she spent so much “quality time” with so many men while we were apart. I should mention that we are a little over a year into our “new” relationship, and we never have sex. I initiated sex a week ago—the first time in four months!—and she came, I didn’t, and she didn’t care. Any time I try to talk to her about it, she gets defensive and tells me that she is attracted to me and insists she doesn’t like sex with guys. What do I do, Dan? Fixing To Explode Thought experiment: Let’s pretend your girlfriend is a lesbian. (And why not? Your girlfriend does.) What kind of a lesbian GF is she? The kind of lesbian GF who doesn’t fuck you much, sucks in bed on those rare occasions when she does fuck you, and manipulates you emotionally to keep you from calling her on her doesn’t-fuck-you-much/ sucks-in-bed-when-she-does bullshit. So, FTE, your GF—lesbian or not—is selfish and inconsiderate, and she’s making you miserable. End it. I’m a submissive gay boy into puppy play. And I have a huge crush on a certain sex-advice columnist and his crazy-hot husband. How do I get to be their owned puppy? Boy After Real Kinks Good news, BARK! Terry says we can get a puppy! But he says we’ll have to get our puppy fixed. That’s a big ask, I realize, but we wanna be responsible dog owners.  This week on the Savage Lovecast, Dan speaks with porn-industry director, performer, and producer Joanna Angel at savagelovecast.com.
