Sailor Eddie

A veteran inker makes badass tats at his NoLibs parlor. ddie “Sailor Eddie” Denny, 49, the tattooist and owner of Bonnie & Clyde Tattoo Parlour on the border of Fishtown and Northern Liberties, took his first steps and spoke his first words in a tattoo parlor. His current shop has only been open since 2007, but he’s got 41 years of tattooing under his belt—many of them in the Philly area. His shop has a door that always seems to be open, and his greeter is Bonnie, a pit bull he rescued from a group of kids trying to fight her.

Inside, you’re greeted by a slew of colorful tattoos, all done in what Sailor Eddie describes as the “old-school” traditional style, which features bold outlines, often with a nautical subject or a text banner—think pictures of the “tattooed man” and “tattooed woman” you’ve seen from carnivals. All sorts of stories can be found at Bonnie & Clyde, including his all-time favorite: a heartwarming tale about an 80-year-old woman’s tattoo of her late husband’s name to honor a promise she had made to him decades earlier.

We didn’t get PW tramp stamps, but we did sit down with Denny to talk about sea monkeys and chest eagles.

So you’ve been in a tattoo parlor for, like, ever.

My grandparents started tattooing in 1933.

They started traveling with a carnival back then, and my grandmother, she got in the box and got the sword stuck through it, got on the board and had knives thrown at her, and was a tattooed lady, and my grandfather handled snakes, ate fire, and was a tattooed man. And they did that up

Right-Wing Talk Radio Is Back! fter failing and then basically being kicked out of the Philadelphia radio market, national conservative political talk is back in Philly. Entertainers including Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh (and Larry Mendte, too) quietly debuted on 106.9 FM, the former home of rapture-happy Harold Camping, in April. The station was recently bought by former Chicago Tribune owner Randy Michaels’ Merlin Media, which has rebranded it “IQ 106.9: Fighting for Freedom from the Fortress of Free Speech.”

Why here? Why now? One need look no further than President Obama—OBAMA 1260, that is: a former progres-

sive radio talk station in Washington, D.C., which thrived during the 2008 campaign season, then crashed and burned, changing its format a mere two weeks after the president’s inauguration—having proved that the short-term ratings bump was well worth it in ad dollars. Which means that now, with a Democratic incumbent, conservative radio is a surefire way to make money. That the talent Michaels recruited for the station has failed in Philly before is of no consequence—you’d be a fool to not realize that as the horse race heats up between Obama and Romney, partisan rhetoric and media coverage will, too. What happens after Jan. 20, 2013, though, is anyone’s guess. (Randy LoBasso) ■

until the day after Pearl Harbor, and my grandfather signed up for the Navy. When he got out of the Navy, he started tattooing again in Philadelphia.

What was the first tattoo you worked on?

I colored in a butterfly on a nurse’s back from Cooper Hospital, and I was about 7 years old when I did my first [color-in].

How many tattoos do you have, estimate?

About 200.

What’s your favorite?

We had pet sea monkeys in the tattoo shop that I was working at, and they passed away, so I have an “in memory of sea monkeys” tattoo; they only lived for six days, but that’s one of my favorites.

What are your favorite tattoos to tattoo on others?

Chest eagles. It’s an old-school thing, I just really like doing it.

What are some things that make you wonder, “Why are you getting this?”

If it’s like that, I won’t do it. I had a girl come in a couple of weeks ago and she wanted “fuck me” across her belt line. I’m not going to do that to somebody. Young kids, when they want me to tattoo their necks and their hands, that’s what I think about the most: How’s this going to affect people’s lives in the future? (Fiona Lockyer) ■ 11am-8pm. was actually in Canada for a majority of the Olympics—and you cannot imagine how gleeful their Sports Center hosts get about bronze medals until you actually see it.

But before I left for my getaway, I managed to read and hear all the click-bait in Philly’s corner of the Internet about how our city needs to have an Olympics, and soon. Gosh darn it, we deserve it, for some reason!

And maybe we do, considering we have a well-earned reputation for hating ourselves.

Because bringing the Summer Olympics (2024, baby!) to Philly would be a fucking nightmare.

Take a look at the cities that have hosted the Games over the last few decades and the budget-busting depravity that’s led to empty buildings, homelessness and massive bankruptcy there. Throw a dart at a globe and you might see that Athens, Greece, hosted the games in 2004. They predicted $4.5 billion euros would cover all that swimming and throwing, but when it came down to it, between the stadium-building, housing and prep, it cost about 5 percent of that country’s GDP—and now Greece is a dirty word. They still haven’t recovered from that debt—never mind the rest of their economic problems.

Other cities, like Nagano, Japan (where each family in that city paid about $30,000 for the 1998 Olympics), and Vancouver, British Columbia, are still struggling to figure out what to do with their Olympic Villages. Meanwhile, Beijing’s 2008 Olympic infrastructure is crumbling.

And just being considered costs a bundle.

It has been discovered that the illegal practice offering the most perks to the International Olympic Committee to get the Games has become a regular thing. For example, the IOC got more than $1 million in perks before the 2002 Salt Lake City Games.So, if you think Philly’s in financial dire straights now, just wait until we’re infested with discus throwers and show horses. atching stylist Liz Hession doing her thing from afar at Old City’s popular Lakshmi Hair Studio, her artistry in cutting and coloring peoples’ hair is clearly evident—the fruits of 20 years of experience at some of Philly’s finest salons. “Oh my God, I hear it all—divorces, cheating, businesses failing, you name it,” says the gregarious 42-year-old brunette during a break from the Lakshmi action on a recent afternoon. “Some people want their 45 minutes with me and they tell me everything, things they don’t tell anyone else. The cut is just a bonus for them.”

It’s no secret that the bond between stylist and client can rival the kinship between spouses, family members or lifelong friends, and that the salon chair occasionally doubles as a confessional or shrink’s sofa, free from judgment. It’s a matter of trust from the outset, when you’re putting a significant aspect of your appearance and your identity in the hands of someone else. And when you’re confident they’ll do you right on that level, confiding intimate matters is often the next step.

But it starts with the hair. And Hession proved early on that she had the skills to make a career out of it.

“It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do,” she says. As a teenager growing up in Fairmount, Hession was obsessed with fashion mags, hair and makeup, cutting her family’s locks and serving as a hair model for a friend who worked at the trendy midtown salon Toppers. Soon after graduating high school in 1988, she got a job as an assistant at Danielle Salon at Headhouse Square. She was shampooing, mixing hair color, holding foil, cleaning the shop, sometimes suffering allergic reactions to some of the styling chemicals. “You do whatever you have to to get your foot in the door,” she says.

By 1994, she finally got her own chair at Danielle, which by then had become Brescia Salon. She steadily garnered clients through referrals, and after a decade at Brescia, she moved on to a six-year residency at Salon Thalia. She came to Lakshmi nearly four years ago, bringing along her sizable and loyal client base.

These days, she works four days a week, typically 10 to 12 hours a day. And the mon-

ey’s pretty good: A stylist with Hession’s experience can make as much as $150,000; more if they’re also getting side work styling for photo shoots or fashion shows.

And Hession works hard for the money, managing the needs and quirks of her many clients: “People come in—‘I just broke up, let’s get crazy, cut all my hair off!’ I’m like, ‘Take a deep breath, things will be fine, think about it and we’ll talk about it tomorrow.’”

And listening to people’s crises all day long takes a personal toll: “We all laugh because I’m dating right now and I’m like, ‘I need a full makeover by the end of the night, I cannot date and cut hair,’ Hession laughs. “You’re filthy and you’re exhausted.

“You have to put away whatever you have going on in your own life and be right there with them,” she continues. “Which is fine because I care about what they’re going through.

Sometimes it’s draining. Every once in a while, I have a client that just reads a magazine and I’m like, ‘Yes, this is good right now.’ Maybe early in my career I would have taken that personally, like, ‘Why don’t you want to talk to me?’ Now it’s like a little breather.”

Hession says she knows there are some who look down on what she does for a living. “But it’s not just about money or glamour. I feel like I’ve made a real difference in people’s lives.” ■

The notorious Philly mob boss turned informant says the government willfully let him go blind in prison.

fter Ralph Natale was released from prison last year, he and his wife Lucy settled into new digs at an undisclosed location. It looks like the typical home of any other great-grandparents: A figurine of a cat in a Santa hat sits on the table alongside a mug with “Wish. Let your heart be light” emblazoned inside it. A flower portrait painted by one of the kids hangs on the walls.

A dusty copy of Moonstruck sits atop the VCR next to a jumbo book of crossword puzzles.

Nothing about the place suggests Natale’s dubious distinction of being the first American mob boss to turn government witness.

“I love it here,” he’ll tell me later. “I’ve been here a few times to collect money in, uh, my former life.”

At 77, Natale has spent nearly half his life in prison. He went to prison for the first time in 1980, serving 15 years for firebombing a furniture store in an insurance scam. After he got out in 1995, he was Philly’s mob boss until 1999, when he was indicted for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine—after already having been picked up on a parole violation for associating with known criminals the year before. He was facing life when he cut a deal with the feds.

Now, he’s a free man for the first time in 13 years—and, for the first time ever, not in the mob or behind bars.

Emerging from the bedroom, he flashes a big smile and spreads his arms as if to say, So what do you think?

Trim and tan, Ralph Natale looks remarkably young for his age. He’s a handsome man with a tidy gray goatee, dark eyebrows and deep-set bright brown eyes lined with thick, jagged black lashes. Today, he’s sporting a knit sweater, light blue seersucker pants and brown leather loafers without socks. His shoes exactly match the color of his skin.

“The shirt is brand new. Well, it’s 15 years old,” he says with a laugh. “[My wife] bought clothes before the last time I went away, but she still had them in boxes.”

Natale sparkles with charisma and is quick with a joke, but being imprisoned for 28 years changes a man. He speaks with a slight lisp after ripping his bottom teeth out when, he says, prison authorities didn’t get him to a dentist to treat an infection fast enough. He’s partially deaf in one ear, but that’s from an incident on the outside when a shotgun went off in a car he was in.

He still enjoys a daily run at a nearby park, but he can’t sleep in bed with Lucy, his 80-year-old wife whom he met at a dance in South Philly when he was 14 and then married two years later. (“He’s quite nice now,”

says Lucy over the phone. “He’s calmed down a lot.”) Instead, Natale sleeps on the couch every night because, he says, it feels more like a jailhouse cot.

“When we were younger, you know, we slept together!” he says. “But she understands ... she understands why.”

With the time for introductory niceties coming to a close, Natale sinks into the couch next to me. He lifts up his hand and traces a circle into the air a few inches in front of my nose with his fingertips. “You’re close to me,” he says. “But this part of your face, I can’t see.”

He tilts his head. “If I look to the side, I can see peripheral.”

He faces me directly. “When I’m looking at you this way, it’s just black.”

Ralph Natale is going blind.

“I’m still beside myself,” Lucy says. “I’ve never dealt with someone who is blind or who is handicapped … I know he’s still getting searing pains across his eyes and around the side of his head, but he doesn’t tell you. He keeps it to himself.”

Natale says he’s been losing his sight steadily for years, and alleges that, while in prison, the federal authorities purposely deprived him of proper treatment. His testimony in four splashy trials helped the DOJ bring the most hidden parts of mafia life in Philly and New Jersey to light—and to send many criminals to prison. In return, he alleges, the feds willfully let him sink into darkness.

In May, Natale’s lawyer Conor Corcoran filed paperwork to initiate a lawsuit against the federal government. They’re charging that the U.S. Department of Justice deprived Natale of his civil rights. They allege that by denying Natale the proper care that might have stopped the progression of his blindness, they violated his Eighth Amendment rights by enacting cruel and unusual punishment.

Natale is suing the government for $10 million.

“He has nothing,” says Lucy. “It would be nice if he had a few dollars because he can’t see, so I can afford to [travel] back and forth [to see my children], or so he can get a car and

If Bruno’s murder was the first nail in the coffin of the old way of doing things in the Philly mob, Natale’s cooperation with the feds was the last.

“If my friend Angelo Bruno was alive, if [Felix] “Skinny Razor” [Di’Tullio] was alive, if [one-time Chicago boss] Tony Accardo was alive, I would be doing life,” says Natale. “I tell you this with love. I get a chill. I would be doing life for the rest of my life. I would never be a witness. That’s how I am.”

“But them punks?” he spits. “No.” Before he flipped, Natale was known, as one mafia source once told a reporter, as “a standup motherfucker.” It was a reputation earned the tough way: In 1982, a Senate Committee hearing on organized crime subpoenaed Natale to testify.

“They said if I gave them the right answers, I would be home in two months,” Natale recalls.

In a scene straight out of a mob movie, at the hearing, which aired on C-SPAN at the time, a young, muscular and bronze Natale theatrically refused to answer their questions, all macho bravado in the face of outraged lawmen. “I said, ‘You got the wrong guy.’ And I did 16 years.”

someone could drive him around.”

Natale downplays the money. For him, it’s a matter of justice. “[The lawsuit] might help, and it might not,” he says. “I’m not dependent on that and my wife’s not dependent on that.

We live with the help of our family. We have enough to pay the rent.”

But for a lifelong gangster, Natale has a very definite and clear idea of right and wrong.

“You know the old cowboy song. ‘I ain’t afraid of living and I ain’t afraid of dying.’ That’s where it’s at,” he says. “[But] maybe [the lawsuit] will show [the feds], ‘This is not what you should have done.’”

“They didn’t like him,” says Lucy. “They never liked him because of his lifestyle, because of what he did.”

When he came clean, Natale confessed to participating in gangland murders, drug trafficking and extortion, among other crimes.

After he admitted that he was the trigger man on two murders and authorized six shootings in the 1990s while testifying that he also bribed former Camden mayor Milton Milan to award construction contracts to mob-controlled companies, Milan called Natale “the devil himself.”

Natale’s been called lots of things by many people: the devil, a loving father, a liar. Lucy makes a good point: “When he gave his testimony, [the feds] believed him,” says Lucy. “But they didn’t believe him when he said he had a problem.”

Ralph Natale was an Italian South Philly tough guy who says his father, Spike, ran an illegal gambling operation for the mob and served time at Eastern State Penitentiary. Natale has said that his father worked for Angelo Bruno, a Sicilian-born emigrant known as “the Gentle Don” who ruled the Philadelphia mob from 1959 until March 21, 1980, when a shotgun bullet shattered his skull as he sat in his car.

Bruno’s death marked the end of the oldschool Philadelphia mob, in which wise guys kept low profiles, stayed out of the drug business and lived and died by omerta, the code of silence that forbids cooperation with authorities.

In the ’70s, Natale got a gig slinging drinks at the Rickshaw Inn, a Cherry Hill spot where local mob guys hung out. When three of Bruno’s men who were running the local bartenders union went to prison for labor racketeering and extortion, Bruno promoted Natale to run the union. In return, Natale diverted health-insurance funds into Bruno’s pocket.

“Angelo Bruno was a decent, honest gangster,” Natale says.

Observers of the Philly mob say that it never recovered after Bruno’s murder.

Bloody power struggles, renegade alliances and an unprecedented number of confidential informants defined the years of chaos after Bruno. So many mobsters sang for the feds that the FBI started calling the Philly mob the “South Philly Boys’ Choir.” And every single boss since Bruno’s murder has been

killed or arrested.

First, Philip “Chicken Man” Testa anointed himself boss until a nail bomb detonated beneath his porch a year later. Next came Nicodemo “Little Nicky” Scarfo, notorious for a flashy strut and a tyrannical flair for ordering executions considered excessive even by mob standards. When he went to jail in 1989, John Stanfa, Bruno’s former driver who was with him the night he was assassinated, was installed as boss. That lasted until he was convicted of murder, racketeering and assorted charges in 1995.

As Stanfa was heading to prison, Natale was heading out; he saw the opportunity to take over, and he had ambition to do so.

While in prison, Natale says he met Joseph “Skinny Joey” Merlino, who would eventually secede him as boss and become his ultimate enemy. But at first, they hit it off—or at least had mutual goals.

Merlino and his crew, made up mostly of relatives of old-guard Philly mobsters, were nicknamed the “Young Turks” and, reportedly feeling they were the rightful heirs to Philadelphia’s La Casa Nostra, had been in a bloody war with Stanfa. Natale says he first encountered Merlino at FCI McKean, a federal prison in western Pennsylvania: “He was under death threat at this time because he tried to kill Nicky Scarfo’s son … he was afraid, he was shaking. I said, ‘Now you’re with me.’ I took him in off the bus.”

They hatched and executed a plan to run the show when they got out, and it worked.

Natale was installed as the official boss of the Philly mob, with Merlino his reputed underboss. (Natale’s detractors have long claimed that Merlino was always really in charge, and just used Natale as a figurehead to gain approval of the old heads.)

The partnership soured after Natale went back to prison. Facing life after being indicted on drug-trafficking charges, Natale became a government witness in August 1999. He’s long explained that he flipped because Merlino stopped making financial payments to his wife while he was prison.

“When I left, [Merlino and his crew] were living in brand-new homes and they were driving Mercedes-Benzes and that’s the truth,” he recalls, voice rising. “Not once did they come over the house and see if Lucy was OK, how she’s doing.”

(Over the years, Natale has told this story many times. Today, he doesn’t mention that Merlino also stopped payments to Ruthann Seccio, Natale’s young girlfriend at the time.)

It was a power struggle that fell along the lines of age. In Natale’s view, the younger generation didn’t share the values—the honor— of their elders.

“I would never become a witness before,” he says. “It was just—different. Different! …

Now, I couldn’t wait to sit in the courtroom and call them punks ... Cowards!”

Natale does not admit fear. He insists that doing hard time, for him, was easy—even when his vision got to the point where he couldn’t read anymore.

Natale recalls that he first noticed a problem with his eyesight more than a decade ago, while at the Federal Correctional Institution at Fairton in New Jersey. As he stood in the yard, he realized he couldn’t focus on a pole that was about 50 feet away: “I [couldn’t] see the whole pole. The pole had stripes on it.”

Maybe his eyes were just tired, he thought, and needed a rest. But the stripes were still there the next day.

“I wrote a [request] to the medical department,” he says, “that I need to have my eyes checked, I’m seeing stripes.”

“He was starting to have problems with [his left] eye,” recalls Natale’s son Frank, a 59-yearold high school teacher and athletic director in Philadelphia. “That’s how it started, it was little by little.”

Natale says he continually appealed to the authorities about his deteriorating vision. The family alleges that he was taken a handful of times to scattershot doctors who provided different diagnoses, but he never received a definitive one.

His attorney says his lawsuit will demonstrate a pattern of purposeful neglect. “The [Department of Justice] treated Natale poorly because of who he was,” Corcoran says. “They didn’t get a definitive diagnosis. And efforts the family made in that regard were thwarted.”

Corcoran is referring to an incident in 2004 when Natale was being temporarily housed in federal prison in Center City while testifying in the Merlino trial. At the time, one of

Natale’s daughters-in-law, Kathaleen Natale, was working as a CT scan technologist at Wills Eye Institute, a renowned eye-care center located just a few blocks away. “[Ralph] was having definite vision issues, and with me working for Wills Eye, I realized how important your sight is and how if things go untreated, what can happen, so I was really anxious to get him taken care of and just to have someone look at him,” says Kathaleen, who now works at a different hospital. “I set up an appointment for my father-in-law to see a neuro-opthamologist.”

Kathaleen made the appointment while Lucy secured permission and arranged to pay marshals’ overtime and ancillary costs for Natale to be escorted to Wills Eye. But the appointment never happened.

“They just never brought him,” says Lucy.

And no answers were forthcoming, she says, as to why.

Kathaleen canceled the appointment.

“When we had to cancel, I gave [the doctor] the courtesy of telling him why. He said, ‘When you can get him down here, let me know and we’ll squeeze him in.’”

But, the Natale family alleges, no one let Ralph see the specialist despite the convenience and their offer to pay out of pocket for it. They suspect a specific U.S. Attorney who had it in for Natale made the call, but are withholding names until the lawsuit is filed.

“Here we have a man who, needless to say, has a very colorful history,” says Corcoran. “But … he’s entitled to the bare minimum standards of decency and civility. When they fail to give him basic medical care to identify the problem and then further, interfere with his family’s private attempts to help that problem, they become just as monstrous themselves, if not more so.”

Years after the Wills Eye incident, Natale was sent to see an eye doctor at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. At the Federal Medical Center in Rochester, where he was sent while awaiting the appointment, he says he was put into a strip cell in solitary confinement for a month and a half. He recalls that it was winter, and icy air flowed in through a crack in a broken window.

“I was freezing to death,” says Natale, who says it was the only time when he wasn’t sure if he was going to survive his last years in prison. “I’ve been all my life in those places. But this place! It was terrible.”

At the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Brian Younge took pictures of his eyes and asked him to read an eye chart.

“I said, ‘I can’t see the chart,’” Natale says. “He said ‘What do you mean?’ He got a little feisty with me. I said, ‘I can’t see the chart! I can’t see nothing!’”

On the paperwork from the appointment, Younge advised that Natale should be brought back within the next few months if symptoms persisted.

“They never brought me back [to the doctor],” says Natale. “So eventually I called home

… One of the guards, a decent guy, let me have the phone call after everyone went home at 5 o’clock. I said, ‘Lucy, you’ve got to get me out of here! I’m not going to make it in here. I’m freezing to death.”

Natale learned later that in Dr. Younge’s report filed to the Federal Medical Center, Younge had made a notation: “He sees better than he admits.”

Natale’s eyes go wild as he tells the story.

“Why would I lie?” he says.

A couple of years later, he says, he learned his charts indicated he was legally blind after he was transferred to the Allenwood prison in Pennsylvania and ran into a friendly guard.

“The first night he walked over … He said, ‘Ralph! Did you know you were going blind?’

right thing, then I’m going to haul them into court. They have an opportunity to right the wrong before it gets messy.

“They’re going to have to … do a wee bit of soul-searching as to why Ralph was not allowed out of prison for a degenerative eye condition that his family was more than willing to pay for,” he continues. “And they’re going to have to consider the implications of their actions for specifically targeting a highprofile defendant and preventing him from getting him the treatment that he’s constitutionally guaranteed to get.”

“Once the suit is filed,” a spokesman for the Department of Justice told PW in an email, “we’ll review it, and will ultimately make a determination as to how the government will

He was looking at it on my record!”

“It just continually got worse and worse and worse,” says Frank, Kathaleen’s husband.

“It was never a point where anybody did anything; now he finally gets to see somebody and when he sees someone now, he’s so far gone there’s nothing they can do.”

Natale has been seeing doctors since getting out of prison but does not yet have an official diagnosis.

The paperwork that Natale’s lawyer filed in May is technically not yet a lawsuit, but rather a declaration of an intention to sue, a formality Corcoran says is required when suing the government. “The feds enjoy a six-month grace period to get their goddamn ducks in a row,” says Corcoran. “And if they don’t do the

Lucy says she just wants the government “to admit they did nothing.”

Though it’s difficult to tell from just talking with him, signs of Natale’s dimming world are all over his home. Two recliners sit sideby-side, just a few feet in front of the largescreen television. The landline telephone has keypads the size of dominoes. A 6-inch magnifying glass rests on a stack of legal pads piled two feet high on the floor next to the couch.

The notepads are a draft of his memoirs.

“I wrote all of this in a prison cell,” says Natale, gesturing at the pile. He’s frustrated. “I’ve

been a man who took care of myself and my family my entire life. [Now] I can’t see. When I write something, I can’t read my own writing.”

He is still working on the book, but more slowly. He writes what he can, and Lucy reads his work back to him.

“My wife is magical,” he says. “We went through things in our marriage … but I never, ever fell out of love with my wife. Just my life got carried away. The stupidity of men. We’re stupid. Thank god I woke up.”

Natale talks about his family a lot. Today, he rattles off the educational and career accomplishments of his three daughters and two sons, and his grandkids, with great pride.

“I’m not a religious man,” he says. “But I thank the blessed mother that my sons took after my wife. And my daughters! If they were boys, they’d be doing 40 to 60 somewhere!”

That’s a compliment—he means they’re tough. One of his daughters is, in fact, a federal prosecutor.

Framed photos of his family are all over the house; his eldest great-grandchild is a freshman in high school. “I never saw them,” he says of his great-grandchildren. “They were born when I was in prison.”

“I feel bad for my dad, because regardless of what he did in his life, no one should go blind,” says Frank. “My son ... would love to have him come to a football game … but there’s no way he could sit in the stands and watch him … when I grew up, he was always at every football game, every practice.”

The family doesn’t see Natale the way the rest of the world might.” I don’t picture him as this big mob guy,” says Frank. “I understand that, but here when you sit down and say hello and have a glass of wine, he’s my dad.”

Natale says that he doesn’t talk too much with neighbors. He figures once he starts chatting, they’ll eventually ask questions that he doesn’t want to answer. He says that now that he’s retired, so to speak, he’s reflecting on his life. “I’m not too proud of anything we did,” he says. “But hey, my life was my life.”

Does he ever think about the people he murdered?

“I can’t feel any way about them, because I’d have no life,” he says. “We didn’t go out and pick somebody who was selling apples or in the candy store or shoot at somebody and a kid gets killed. These guys were bad men … I only took the life of men who wanted to take my life. And that’s it. I can’t say any more.”

DARK STAR

For those who were underwhelmed by this summer’s “totally not an Alien prequel, even though it so is” Prometheus, you might be interested to know where the 1979 classic actually got its DNA from—a spotted beach ball with claws. Although Alien’s slimy phallus is immediately more threatening, co-writer Dan O’Bannon loosely reworked elements of the sci-fi masterpiece’s plot from his student film Dark Star, including the aforementioned gas-filled menace. Directed

by John Carpenter (who would later make his own part of movie history with Halloween and The Thing), Dark Star is a goofy semiparody of 2001 that was originally under an hour long, but later given a shoestring budget to pad out to feature length. Featuring Carpenter’s soundtrack (of synth-bleeps/ country ballads) and cheap yet clever special effects, it tells the tale of the scout ship Dark Star, whose four-man crew get into all sorts of surreal hijinks, ultimately climaxing in an existentialist argument with a sentient bomb. BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE

If you’ve seen the explosive, award-winning 2004 indie-rock-doc Dig!, you probably have the image of Brian Jonestown Massacre frontman Anton Newcombe as a boozing, brawling, audience-baiting, dope-shooting, messianic madman seared into your brain.

Word is Newcombe’s not quite as possessed by his demons these days, but that hasn’t made BJM’s craggy shoegaze-psychedelia any less potent or interesting, especially on the new Aufheben, which drives some smoldering jams down a motorik highway.

Along for the ride in this latest Massacre incarnation are current and former members of Spacemen 3, Singapore Sling and Dead Skeleton; even co-founding guitarist Matt Hollywood—whose vicious onstage throwdown with Newcombe gave Dig! some added lunacy—is back in the fold. The band seems well past the point of fisticuffs and implosion, but there’s still enough drama in the grooves to keep you riveted.

If Woody Allen’s Manhattan has a conceptual flaw, it’s this: That’s not late-’70s Manhattan. Rather than a Gershwin-backed metropolis where “it’s difficult to live ... without a big income,” N.Y.C. of 30-plus years ago was a fetid, crime-plagued cesspool where dubious outsiders—artists, junkies, both— could score cheap rent without dwelling below Houston Street. It’s the New York as seen in this Secret Cinema program’s two archaic docs. First, George Plimpton’s New York finds the journo trying to defend its honor in 1979—soon after a fiscal crisis and “the Summer of Sam”—via stops at an empty Yankee Stadium, a crumbling Ellis Island and Jimmy Breslin. Only One New York, from 1964, finds French ethnographic filmmaker Pierre-Dominique Gaisseau descending upon the town to make, as per the recently late Judith Crist, “the kind of love poem that only a non-New Yorker could have composed, a beautiful fresh-eyed movie that only a master documentarian could have made.” MATT PRIGGE 7pm. $5-$9. While police were busting Lenny Bruce at Café Au Go Go, the fuzz were also descending upon underground filmmaker/performance artist Jack Smith’s Flaming Creatures (1963), a dreamy, 43-minute wallow amongst transvestites, hermaphrodites and drag queens. For his follow-up, and only other fulllength work, Smith went bigger, if not badder. Like always, Gerrard’s ethereal contralto and Perry’s corporeal croon complement each other nicely, and the exotic, richly textured tunes simultaneously evoke Moroccan opium dens, vampiric Renaissance Faires and haunted Byzantine cathedrals. If you’ve walked past the empty lot near Broad and Spruce streets lately, you’ve probably noticed a strange wigwam-like structure behind the fence and wondered what the hell it is. Well, local artists Andy Walker and Andy Heisey are hoping it’s the future of sustainable urban building. Constructed entirely of environmentally friendly materials, RUST (aka “Renewed Urban Studio Tent”) has actually served as a living studio for UArts students the last few weeks. The inside is insulated with layers of newspaper, while the exterior is made of a clay-like material fused with all sorts of recycled items collected from streets around the city, as well as local indigenous plants. The public will only have a few more days to check out the structure before it’s relocated. Duck, Duck, Goosed

Rittenhouse Tavern’s adventurous menu offers one more surprise than we’d planned for.

By Cristina Perachio // feedback@philadelphiaweekly.com n a cool and pleasant August evening in Center City, on the ground floor of the Philadelphia Art Alliance, Rittenhouse Tavern promises to make for an impressive night out: After perusing the art gallery, it’s time to feast on a meal from former Le Bec-Fin chef Nicholas Elmi. The outdoor seating is sparse and lovely, the herb garden and hanging plants valiantly compensating for the fact that the eponymous park itself is not visible.

The staff is immediately attentive and helpful, making sure our water is filled, our bread basket runneth over. And our server is happy to help my companion choose dishes that are compatible with her non-meat-eating lifestyle. (Make a note of that. We’ll get back to it.)

First up, delicious and simple, are prosciutto-wrapped figs with gorgonzola and honey. Glazed and crispy on the outside, the figs’ sweetness is balanced by the salty crunch of the prosciutto wrap.

Equally tasty and equally lovely to the eye are the roasted baby beets with goat cheese, pistachio and iceplant. The dish is striking, served in a deep white bowl that contrasts with the reds, pinks and yellows of the beets that swirl with the goat cheese. The beets are tender, fresh and flavorful without being overpowered by the cheese, which is mild and savory.

Moving on to the more adventurous deviled eggs with pork scrapple: I want to like them. I have fond childhood memories of scrapple that center around a crispy, smoky outside and a warm, hashlike inside, and while I don’t expect that kind of comfort food at a sophisticated restaurant, I do expect a taste that’s related. It’s just not there. But I am a proud Pennsylvanian, and I keep eating even though the first bite has an odd piece of gristle I have to swallow without chewing.

More satisfying is the equally ambitious citrus-scented orecchiette pasta with lemongrass-braised snails, green almond and sea bean. The pasta is cooked al dente, and the sauce that pops with small bites of fresh citrus is the saving grace, offsetting the saltiness of the snails, which might also be fairly described as al dente.

The truffle-crusted veal loin comes highly recommended by our server.

Granted, it’s the most expensive dish on the menu at $31, but its companions— fava beans, hearts of palm, strawberry and sweetbread—seem like a fresh, enticing mix. The sweetbread is crispy, lemony perfection on the outside, and tender, succulent and bursting with flavor on the inside. The tender veal relies on the squid-

ink-and-truffle-infused chicken mousse for flavor. Speaking of squid, though neither the menu nor the server mentioned it, two curled tentacles sit hidden amongst the veggies, almost a garnish, so I wonder for a moment if they’ve crawled their way onto my plate accidentally. Similarly surprising: a smattering of peppercorns, which go unnoticed in a quiet corner of the dish until my eyes begin watering.

The next dish is a doozy: five large dayboat sea scallops, perfectly seared on top with a golden-brown crisp sitting in a heavy-handed amaranth truffle butter sauce with fresh and tender chanterelles and turnips that stand on their own. They are gorgeous, rich and delicious. And their inclusion in our meal comes as a result of my companion’s request for an entrée fit for a pescatarian. Which is why, the next day, when I call to double-check the ingredients, I’m startled to learn that they the scallops were topped with a vanilla foie gras froth.

Foie gras, made from duck or goose liver, is considered unpleasant by many who’ve chosen not to eat meat for philosophical reasons. It’s the kryptonite of vegetarians—and it wasn’t detailed on the menu. So I have to ask the chef why an avowed-meat-free patron ended up having it recommended to her. Chef Elmi immediately apologized, taking full responsibility: While he doesn’t list every tiny ingredient on the menu, he does train the front-house staff to be well-versed in dealing with customer allergies and other food preferences, and he shouldn’t have allowed there to be any communication gap regarding such a delicate ingredient.

“This was definitely an oversight,” Elmi says. “A mistake that won’t happen again.”

Fortunately, my friend says it didn’t completely overshadow her experience (though it was certainly a reminder to always be diligent when ordering food). So she won’t have to forswear Rittenhouse’s perfect, summer-in-the-country-inspired desserts.

Cooper Robb // jrobb@philadelphiaweekly.com his season marks the 25th anniversary of the Arden Theatre Company, which, over the course of the last quarter century, has become not only one of Philadelphia’s most important theater companies, but an influential player in the national theater scene. It’s fair to say that the Arden is probably the only Philadelphia theater that can trace its roots back to Burt Reynolds.

Although ‘70s sex symbol Reynolds is best known for his action-comedy blockbusters, he also owned and operated a theater in Jupiter, Fla. Focused more on light entertainment than high art, the Jupiter Theater hired then-23-year-old Terrence J. Nolen to direct a production of Cole Porter’s classic musical Anything Goes, starring Joyce DeWitt of TV’s hit sitcom Three’s Company. Nolen calls his first professional directing gig a “surreal experience.” He even sat between Reynolds and his then-new bride Loni Anderson on opening night. Retreating to a local saloon during the intermission, Nolen phoned Aaron Posner, his college buddy. Distraught at the idea of a life directing commercial theater, Nolen confided to Posner, “I either got to get out of this fucking business or we have to start a company.”

Nolen returned to his hometown of Philadelphia, where he and Posner met with Bernard Havard, the president and producing artistic director of the Walnut Street Theatre. Eager to help the young directors, Havard offered Nolen and Posner a terrific deal: He would permit their new Arden Theater Company to use the Walnut’s two small upstairs theaters, provide technical production support and the Walnut’s box office for processing tickets, and give the Arden access to the Walnut’s mailing list in exchange for 10 percent of the box-office receipts. Nolen and Posner jumped at the opportunity. From May 1988 to January 1989, the Arden mounted three acclaimed productions in the 70-seat Walnut Street Theatre Studio.

Following a second season at the Walnut, the Arden co-founded the St. Stephen’s Performing Arts Center. Located at 10th and Ludlow streets, the 150-seat theater was among the first collaborations between a performing arts organization and a Center City church. The five seasons at St. Stephen’s were a period of continued growth for the Arden, culminating in the company’s landmark production of the Stephen Sondheim musical Sweeney Todd in 1993. Astoundingly creative and remarkably ambitious, the production—which has taken on near-legendary status in Philadelphia theater lore—established the Arden as one of the city’s top theaters.

Marquee business: The Arden turns 25.

When the company’s lease at St. Stephen’s expired, the Arden went in search of a new home. For a year they looked at potential locations in every part of the city before purchasing their current space, a 50,000 square-foot building at 40 N. Second St. in Old City in 1995.

Following an extensive renovation, the building now houses two flexible stages; together, the two spaces host the Arden’s season of five adult productions and two shows under the auspices of the Arden’s Children’s Theatre.

Founded in 1998, the Children’s Theatre has been a huge success. The company approaches the Children’s Theatre with the same zeal, resources and professionalism as their adult productions. Several of the company’s children’s shows are not only among the Arden’s all-time biggest box-office hits, but in many cases (such as their stunning production of The Boxcar Children) are as artistically ambitious and satisfying as their adult stagings.

“When we started, we really wanted to be a Philadelphia theater,” Nolen says. And while the company does occasionally cast actors from outside the city, the Arden has thrived by embracing a strong sense of community. This sense of kinship has extended to the Philadelphia playwrights who have been championed by the Arden, most notably Michael Hollinger.

With two exceptions, all of Hollinger’s fulllength works have had their world premiere at the Arden, and, along with local playwright Bruce Graham, another native son, the two are generally considered the city’s finest dramatists, with numerous Barrymore Awards between them to prove it.

Today, the Arden shows no signs of slowing down. With a budget of just under $5 million, the Arden recently purchased the building at 62 N. Second St., which will become the permanent home of the Arden Drama School.

The company plans to use the building as classroom space, a craft studio and home to an 80-seat studio, all to develop and stage new plays from the next generation of American playwrights. ■

Observing the Observer Visions of Loren Eiseley celebrates the work of the famed UPenn anthropologist.

It pools in the histories of its various geographic, philosophical and scientific societies and in the archives of the city’s institutions of higher education. While the contributors to this bedrock are many, there just might be an entire layer, carbon dating to somewhere between 1950-1970, dedicated to the scholarship of University of Pennsylvania anthropologist, nature writer and philosopher Loren Eiseley (1907-1977). During his lifetime, he was awarded 36 honorary degrees, published 18 books and won awards from the Boston Science Museum to the U.S. Humane Society. Visions of Loren Eiseley, a group show curated by Philadelphia Traction Company member artist Jeff Dentz, aims to celebrate Eiseley’s work, while transforming a little slice of urban fabric along the way.

Cruise up to the corner of 41st Street and Haverford Avenue in West Philly, and you can’t miss this unusual exhibition: a series of 11 black-and-white posters wheat-pasted over the boarded-up windows of a warehouse. “We didn’t want to advertise for ourselves too much,” says Dentz, referring to the warehouse-cum-gallery where the shared workspace known as Traction Company houses its metal, moulding and printmaking workshops. “But we wanted to show the neighborhood that this was a creative center, a place where we’re working out ideas about art.” To this end, Dentz asked five local artists to create works on paper in reaction to Eiseley’s writing on science, evolution and the role of humans in the larger ecosystem. Dentz had Eiseley on the mind, and for an outdoor show, paying homage to a naturalist seemed only natural.

The resulting imagery—photocopied and enlarged from the original woodcuts, drawings and collages—reads like illustrations of a meandering book club discussion. As in any discussion, themes, trends and areas of shared interest come to the fore. Water is prevalent in many of the prints; mountains, too. In other cases, solitary figures dominate landscapes. For Dentz, who has two pieces in the exhibition, the apparition of people is a development he attributes directly to Eiseley. “Previous to reading his stuff, a lot of my work was landscapes,” he says. He had a hard time figuring out how to incorporate human beings into his work, but after he read Eiseley, it all seemed to come together. “He was talking about how humans were interacting with the changing landscape,” recalls Dentz. “Loren

There’s a lot in his books about being a human and watching the world change.”

Indeed, things have changed around the block on which the exhibition sits. Visions of Loren Eiseley may lie only a handful of streets from the University of Pennsylvania, where Eiseley taught, but it seems like another world.

Rather than meticulously painted porches and streets teeming with college students, a tract of Philadelphia Housing Authority subdivisions stretches out across the street, and Traction Company’s boarded-up appearance only serves to accent the scene of urban grit.

But to travel afield would not have been out of character for Eiseley, who train-hopped and hoboed his way through the Great Depression. Observation and contemplation were tenets of Eiseley’s approach to the world, and Dentz hopes people will pause to wonder at Visions. “Everyone’s looking at the sidewalk and each other and the cars. This gives you something else to look at,” says Dentz.

He’s low-key about the exhibition, which faces wind, rain and crippling August heat. In fact, the works take form around this particularly Eiselian paradox: Just as Eiseley rendered existential questions accessible to regular people, the artists in Visions adapt philosophical meditations on the environment to a street art vernacular, using wheat pastes to make sketches of nature in the urban jungle. ■ Closing reception is Thurs., Aug. 23, 6 to 9pm.

SIX PACK Six Major Films Difficult to See Today

By Matt Prigge // mprigge@philadelphiaweekly.com The Big Parade (1925): In its day, King Vidor’s war epic wasn’t just popular—it was the single biggest moneymaker of the silent era. It ran in some theaters for a year straight. It influenced all subsequent war films. And good luck finding it. Though it was once on VHS, it has never surfaced on digital formats and rarely pops up in repertory. Sorry.

Porgy and Bess (1959): Though its production was troubled, the film of George Gershwin’s all-black “folk opera” went full-stop: Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge and Sammy Davis, Jr. starred, Otto Preminger directed (after Rouben Mamoulian was sacked), and the lavish production was presented in 70mm Todd-AO. Alas, it underperformed, and the Gershwin estate was displeased enough to pull it from circulation in 1974. They’re still prickly: Spike Lee has spent the last decade trying to get his own version filmed, only to repeatedly run afoul of Gershwin resistance.

The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (1962): Cinerama—which touted a mega-sized curved screen with three panels—has been understandably difficult to replicate on home video formats. Still, at least you can see How the West Was Won. This George Pal monstrosity has gone AWOL: Reports of water damage to the original negative have kept it from restoration. Or so the story has till now gone. An alleged restored version will be finally screened at L.A.’s Cinerama theater this fall.

The Touch (1971): Few talk about Ingmar Bergman’s English-language debut, which threw an allegedly abrasive Elliott Gould into the filmmaker’s stock company of Bibi Andersson and Max von Sydow. But that’s because, after disastrous reception, it’s gone mysteriously missing, existing only in bootlegs shorn of 15 minutes. For the record, Molly Haskell is a fan.

The Devils (1971): Ken Russell’s reliably OTT spectacle on a real-life bullshit case of demonic possession amongst nuns in 17th-century France originally featured a sequence dubbed “the Rape of Christ.” Even today, in so-called “director’s cuts,” one cannot see a version of the film with this scene intact.

Inchon (1981): A Korean War epic about General MacArthur, starring Laurence Olivier and directed by Bond filmmaker Terence Young. What’s the problem? Apart from that it was financed entirely by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon? ■

Third-Act Plot Twists Make Summer Fall

At first, Red Hook Summer is nuanced and endearing.

Then, it takes a turn down Crazy Street.

Spike Lee’s Red Hook Summer was supposed to be a return to his roots, busting out of a broken Hollywood system that hadn’t greenlit one of his films in more than four years. Returning to the Brooklyn streets he’s chronicled so often and with such idiosyncratic grandeur, Lee even brought back Mookie to deliver the pizza.

Too bad the movie is such a mess.

Shot on the fly over 18 days with a crew recruited from Lee’s NYU classes, Red Hook Summer is a legitimate underground operation. Co-written with neighborhood buddy James McBride (who was also responsible for Lee’s miserable Miracle at St. Anna), it’s at the very least a time capsule of urban life right now, with enough loving details and strange nuances, you could very well spend the first hour or so thinking this is the kind of picture they just don’t make anymore.

Jules Brown stars as Silas Royale, a petulant pre-teen buppie from upscale Atlanta who prefers to be called Flik. His mother sends him to live in the Red Hook projects for the summer with his churchy grandpa—Da Good Bishop Enoch Rouse (The Wire’s Clarke Peters)—in Spartan quarters lacking even a television, confounding to a young man who views the world through his iPad 2. Da Good Bishop is quite a character, clinging to the word of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in nearly every utterance. He runs a collapsing storefront church called Lil Peace of Heaven and never misses out on a chance to proselytize during casual conversation. The neighborhood is shrinking; you’ve got the gangs on one side and gentrification on the other, and, if nothing else, Red Hook Summer presents a community slowly being squeezed out of house and home.

We’re never told exactly why Flik’s mom sent her well-off child to go live in the projects for three months, but obviously, Flik doesn’t take kindly to the old man’s harsh regiments. Soon, however, Flik gets friendly with the young Chazz Morningstar (Toni Lysaith), which might

be one of the awesomest Lee monikers ever coined. The two dither and flirt their way around the first blush of puppy-love, sneaking snack food from the church rectory and tracing one another’s names into wet cement. This actually gets Flik out of the house and away from his electronic devices, which I suppose I would consider a positive development, were it not for Chazz’s fanatical devotion to Carmelo Anthony and the New York Knicks.

The first acts of Red Hook Summer have a lackadaisical, endearingly unassuming quality. Characters wander in and spout a few talking points about poverty and current events, with Heather Simms often dropping by as Chazz’s mom, laying out a didactic monologue or two about child-rearing designed to earn applause from audiences. Bruce Hornsby’s score (yes, that Bruce Hornsby) hammers home plaintive piano chords that sometimes threaten to drown out conversations, but the colors pop, and by this point, I doubt Lee is even capable of shooting a scene that isn’t visually gripping. Da Good Bishop’s sermons take up an unwieldy amount of screen time, and they’re strangely enthralling.

Then something happens. For a while, it seemed like Red Hook Summer was going to be Lee’s Gran Torino, where he gets

to be all crotchety and tell those kids to put away their goddamn Apple products and get off his lawn. But there are surprising plot twists, and then there is batshit crazy. Red Hook Summer goes batshit crazy. The movie gets ugly and violent real fast, almost completely disengaging from Flik’s point of view. Granted, the kid can’t act his way out of a paper bag, and I should be happy that the rest of the movie falls upon a performer as fine as Clarke Peters, but I still cannot fathom whatever point Lee’s trying to make here, or why he would derail his not-bad summer idyll with such a nuclear bomb.

The film has been shorn of 15 or so minutes since its Sundance premiere.

Interestingly enough, a lot of the scenes left on the cutting-room floor involved Lee reprising his role of Mookie from Do The Right Thing. Probably because Mookie would have thrown a trash can at the screen. ■

For Red Hook Summer, the always fiery filmmaker returns to his beloved borough.

Just don’t ask him about race.

By Matt Prigge // mprigge@philadelphiaweekly.com t’s been four years since Spike Lee had a theatrically released film, the last being the not-very-well-received Miracle at St. Anna.

Not that he’s been slacking: In the interim, he’s directed documentaries like Passing Strange, Kobe Doin’ Work and the equally epic When the Levees Broke postscript If God is Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise, as well as the oneman Broadway show Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth. While doing pre-production on his long-planned remake of the South Korean shocker OldBoy, and with the Michael Jackson doc Bad 25 about to hit U.S. film festivals, he’s been doing press on Red Hook Summer, an indie he self-financed. PW spoke with Lee at Ms. Tootsie’s about the film, which tells the tale of a young teen, Flik, and his eventful visit with the preacher grandfather he barely knows.

What drew you to Red Hook as a location?

[Co-writer James McBride] grew up in Red Hook. The church of the film, his parents founded. And it’s a very interesting neighborhood. It’s isolated. Cut-off.

You have several characters from previous films wandering around here: Mookie from Do the Right Thing is working for Sal’s Famous Pizzeria again; Nola Darling from She’s Gotta Have It is now a Jehovah’s Witness.

We’ve done this before. In Jungle Fever, Buggin’ Out reappears as a homeless person.

In Jungle Fever, the same two cops who murdered Radio Raheem try to arrest the characters played by Annabella Sciorra and Wesley Snipes. And in Inside Man, the pizza is from Sal’s.

One of the film’s themes is gentrification and how low-income families have been priced out of Brooklyn. At this point, where can they go?

People can’t afford to live in New York anymore, so they’re going back to Puerto Rico and back to Dominican Republic. They’ve gone back down South.

Are there other Brooklyn neighborhoods that you want to make a film about?

Yeah, but I don’t know what it is. This is the sixth one. She’s Gotta Have It was what is now known as Dumbo and Fort Greene. Do the Right Thing was Bed-Stuy Do or Die. Crooklyn was Bed-Stuy Do or Die. Clockers was Boerum Hill. He Got Game was Coney Island. And Red Hook Summer, Red Hook. And I’m not done yet.

Red Hook Summer was self-financed, but earlier in your career, smaller films like this—School Daze, Crooklyn—were studio films. It seems like the studios today aren’t interested in small, intelligent films.

I mean, if you want to do that film, you’re Clint Eastwood or Scorsese or Chris Nolan.

There’s still a cache of directors who can get what they want. If you’re not in that cache, it’s much harder.

Did you find it freeing doing a small film with a relatively inexpensive camera? How did that change your aesthetics?

It didn’t. It’s filmmaking. I don’t let the tools change the way I do stuff. Film or digital doesn’t change the way I shoot something.

One of the main characters, Da Good Bishop Enoch Rouse, turns out to have a troubling secret, and yet the film doesn’t completely damn him. That seems consistent with your films. For example, 25th Hour doesn’t let Monty off the hook for being a drug dealer who has poisoned and destroyed the lives of his clients. But he’s still sympathetic.

It really depends on who the audience is.

Not everybody I’ve talked to has found his

character sympathetic. He’s a drug dealer; they should throw him in jail. Other people felt differently. I don’t dictate to the audience whether they should feel one way or the other. I like hearing people with different views. It amazes me to hear people have two diametrically opposed views, and they’ve both seen the same film.

Can you talk about some of the differences between the Sundance cut and the new theatrical cut? I hear there was a scene where Flik [the young main character] interviewed Mookie.

The bulk of the stuff that got cut out was Flik’s interviews. We just saw that the audience gets the idea. He says himself: I’m making a documentary about Red Hook. And you don’t need to see everything he shoots.

I wanted to talk to you about race in America ...

I’m done answering questions about race in this country. I’m done. D-U-N. Done. It’s just tiring.

Well, I was hoping you’d speak a little about how racism has evolved with Obama in the office.

You got a real question? [Laughs] ■

“You should have listened to your body,” murmurs Paul Giamatti during the freakazoid finale of David Cronenberg’s astonishing adaptation of Don DeLillo’s (ahem) difficult novel. In what amounts to a deliciously sick joke at the expense of Twi-hards everywhere, Robert Pattinson stars as Eric Packer, a zombified billionaire dulled to the world and cruising across the island of Manhattan at a glacial pace in a limousine that feels more like a cocoon. Thanks to some bad predictions regarding the Chinese yuan, Eric’s financial empire is disintegrating into ruins over the course of this no-good, very bad day.

The president is in town, and there’s a celebrity funeral, leaving midtown traffic snarled at a standstill.

Protesters are tearing up the streets, and an ominous security advisor informs us of a credible threat on our protagonist’s life. Yet, Eric still insists on going out and getting a haircut.

So dense you can hardly take it all in with just a single viewing, Cosmopolis is the first screenplay Cronenberg penned himself since 1999’s Existenz.

Though most of the dialogue is almost verbatim from DeLillo’s book, it’s all imbued with the same dreamy, space-shot, mordantly funny deadpan of the director’s Crash and Naked Lunch—a very wry, exquisitely Canadian sense of impending doom.

Cronenberg deliberately flattens out the film with Brechtian distancing devices. Eric’s limo is a massive soundstage (complete with both a retractable urinal and a throne) where the chaos of the outside world is glimpsed only through old-timey rear-projection shots in tinted windows. The digital cinematography compresses depth of field to a point where characters often look like cardboard cut-outs, and startling edits do little to clue us in as to whether supporting players are coming or going.

Cosmopolis is an ice-cold, woozy nightmare of a movie. The sleek limousine becomes a sort of purgatory, as Eric rides ever-forward at less than 5 mph toward ruin. He fucks, drinks, kills and even treats himself to an epically invasive prostate exam—any opportunity to jolt himself from this all-encompassing numbness, an emotional state at which Pattinson naturally excels. Great casting.

Like all the best Cronenberg pictures, Cosmopolis is a pitch-black comedy about man’s foolhardy attempt to impose systems of order on nature’s chaos.

For all the slick, shiny surfaces and shimmering 1 percent luxuries, the key here is Eric’s “asymmetrical prostate,” which metaphorically stands in for the arbitrary randomness of an indifferent universe. He really should have listened to his body, and the irony is not lost on Cronenberg that the moral of this story can be found in Eric Packer’s asshole. ■

Cracker’s Keepers The Martha Graham Cracker Cabaret celebrates its 7th anniversary with a gig guaranteed to please.

or seven years, the Martha Graham Cracker Cabaret has melted faces and shattered skulls with its deep well of badass covers and riotous betweensong improv. The show is “monster drag” at its finest. At the helm, of course, is Dito van Reigersberg, one of the city’s finest thespians and a co-founder of Philly’s venerable Pig Iron Theatre Company. As Martha Graham Cracker, he’s never met a stage he didn’t own or a sequin gown he didn’t wear the shit out of—no easy feat for a hairy, 6-foot-something man.

MGCC celebrates their seven-year anniversary with what will no doubt be an unforgettable show at Johnny Brenda’s this Saturday. We sat down with the group’s keyboard player, Victor Fiorillo, for a quick chat.

You are all celebrating your seventh year. When MGCC began, did you think it would go on as long as it has?

Did you have any expectations in that regard?

I don’t think any of us ever gave it any thought one way or another, really. But part of the reason it has gone on for so long is that it didn’t have to. None of us were hanging our hats on making a career in music via this band. It’s an incredible amount of fun with very few expectations. But it certainly doesn’t surprise me that it has gone on for as long as it has. There is no night out in Philadelphia quite like this one.

MGCC has no website, no recorded music, and so every crowd member that’s come to see you play is there because of word of mouth about the live experience exclusively. Do you feel more pressure to make every performance as memorable and entertaining as possible because of that?

My impression is that Dito gets up and does what he does without a huge amount of preparation. In my mind, he is improv at its finest. Then again, he could, after seven years, tell me that he actually scripts every single show and has plants in the audience. And that would just ruin it all for me. Or make it even more amazing. I am not sure which.

I do feel a ton of pressure with the shows, and I am sure that some of the

band would say that I am a bit of a control freak as a result. But that’s OK. We have our balance. And we all genuinely like each other and have a helluva time doing what we do. Otherwise, what would be the point?

What are some of the covers you all are playing right now?

It really varies from every show. We have a pretty vast arsenal of covers and are always trying to come up with new ones.

And though Martha tends to stay out of the fights, the rest of the band can have its share of them about song choices.

My favorite covers are the ones that you would never expect a “drag queen” to do—and that Dito kills. For instance, we absolutely rock the shit out of “I’ll

Wait” by Van Halen, and when we do, the crowd goes nuts. But it doesn’t really matter what song we play, to some extent. If Dito is “on,” he can make anything work.

What does Dito get out of performing with MGCC that he doesn’t with performing at the Pig Iron? Does it offer him some release the theater company doesn’t?

Every livable square foot of their North Philly home studio is used to capture, create and convey the trio’s diversified sound. They’ve built a surefire formula for success on their terms, and by all appearances, their Do-ItOur-Damn-Selves strategy seems to be working as planned; they’ve opened for acclaimed emcee Talib Kweli here and local giant Reef the Lost Cauze in Amsterdam; rhymed alongside heat-bringers like Freeway and Young Chris; and held court in bustling freestyle ciphers on Temple’s campus. With a laser-like focus on “skill over swag,” Ground Up continues to crank out first-rate material —10 mixtapes, in fact, and all of them bangers, from start to finish—for an insatiable and rapidly growing fan base.

Oh, and did we mention that they make all that music available for free?

“We went into this music thing with the mindset that our fans are our best publicists and PR agents that we could ever have, so we decided that the thing that would set us apart is an abundance of not only music, but free music,” Azar—the butter-voiced rhymer, versus Malakai’s gruffer stylings—told us via phone from the group’s creative hub. Instead of pressing up product to sell, they choose to make each Ground Up collection a free download via their website, GroundUpSounds.com, and sell home-burned CDs and selected Ground Up merch at their shows. “Hopefully, our fans accept the trade,” Azar says. “Who are we to sell our music right now when some of the most famous people are still

giving away their music for free from time to time? Too many rappers put their CD on iTunes and sell like 10 copies.

Good for him, but I don’t want to go on iTunes and sell 10 copies.” He estimates that they’ve given away at least 100,000 recordings in total, each of them serving as bricks in the rock-solid support system they’re creating for when they finally decide to put price tags on all that genius.

But success, like life, is a funny thing, ultimately rooted in what one values— and these Ground Up cats value their independence, so the only standards they live up to, however lofty, are their own.

They’ve been hard at work on the Supernatural Series, a succession of skin-tight, lyrically deft singles—buttressed by the clever, psychoactive artwork of friend and cohort Mike Oberlies—available weekly on their site since July 14, all culminating with the release of their latest tape, Supernatural—again, for free—on Sept.

18. “It’s something we’re all extremely excited about,” says Azar. “For the first time in our music-making careers, we put ourselves in a position where we

feel we’ve made so much music in the last few months, we’re really able to pick and choose the cream of the crop for this release, and that’s something we weren’t able to do [in the past.]”

Aside from Ground Up’s pending Philly show dates—including tonight in Rittenhouse Square, at PW’s annual Concerts in the Park, performing with and backed by The Lawsuits—their Happy Hour Tour, launched last week in Wildwood, N.J., will wind them through cities including Baltimore, Richmond, New York City and Buffalo—even Toronto, cementing them as international, lovers.

“Abroad, you sort of see how fans here take hip-hop for granted,” Azar says.

“They love it so much, and they cherish it so much over there because it’s so much less the norm than it is here. CRITIC’S PICK // MADONNA In the pop world’s game of thrones, Madonna is the deposed queen, cast into the wilderness while a string of usurpers—Beyonce, Gaga, Rihanna—lord over the kingdom she once ruled. But Madge the Conqueror has been busy plotting her return. Though her shaky Super Bowl halftime appearance in February wasn’t quite the coup she was hoping for, nor was her recently released MDNA, Madonna’s latest tour certainly promises to out-spectacle all the rest and maybe catapult her back to the top. Based on accounts from the Euro leg of the MDMA jaunt this summer, the 53-year-old singer has turned her stages dark and violent: Guns blaze, blood flows, swastikas appear on politicians’ foreheads, Madonna-as-Joan of Arc turns up to kick ass. And while she’s got a huge arsenal of hits, setlists have overwhelmingly favored new material over past glories. I am a college-age gay male. Last year, I dated two guys. The first—let’s call him Mitt—I dated for five months. He broke up with me, and it hurt as much as breakups do, but I got over it. A few months later, I dated another guy—let’s call him Paul—for a month. I really liked him, but he broke up with me, too. Then I found out that two days after breaking up with me, Paul started going out with Mitt. They knew I had dated each of them. It was the end of the school year, and I quickly left for vacation. The school year starts back up soon, and I am still pissed and hurt that they are dating. Do I have a right to be? Should I just get over myself? Should I just do my best to avoid them?

Exes Became A Couple Avoid them for now, EBAC, and get over yourself.

Gays and lesbians are about 2 to 5 percent of the population. I’m afraid that arithmetic precludes us from hewing to the “bro code”—at least where dating friends-of-exes, exes-of-friends, or exes-of-exes are concerned. We simply don’t have the luxury of being as rigid about this shit as straight people do.

The pickings for us are just too slim.

But you have a right to your feelings, EBAC, and you should go ahead and feel the shit out of your pissed-and-hurt feelings. Two guys dated you, both dumped you, and now they’re dating each other.

That’s gotta sting. So avoid your exes for now—why salt your wounds by hanging out with them?—but resist the urge to go to war with your exes. Don’t trash them on Facebook, don’t force your friends to choose sides. Smile and nod when you see them on campus, chat politely if you’re thrown together at parties, and just generally accept their relationship with as much good grace as you can muster.

Remember: The odds that these guys will be together forever are pretty slim. I’m not suggesting that their more-probable-than-not breakup should delight you, EBAC, only that you might not want to burn bridges because—college being college, gay men being gay men—you could wind up dating one or the other or both of these guys again. Or, more likely, you might want to be friends with one or the other or both of them once your hurt has burned off.

And finally, EBAC, ask yourself what you want these guys saying to mutual friends—some of whom might be gay, some of whom might be into you—if they’re asked about you. Do you want them to say you revealed yourself to be an angry and vindictive psycho when they got together? Or do you want them to say that, although you were obviously hurt when they got together, you were gracious about it, and that while you weren’t the right guy for either of them, you’re a good guy and the right guy for somebody?

I’m a 26-year-old queer woman. I’m about to visit a friend who used to be my boyfriend and who has been my lover when we’ve visited each other since. Sex with him is fun for me, but it’s been life-changing for him. I’m the first person he has ever shared his kinks with: age regression/diapers/submission. Annual Public Notice of Special Education Services and Programs, Services for Gifted Students, and Services for Protected Handicapped Students Notice to Parents According to state and federal special education regulations, annual public notice to parents of children who reside within a school district is required regarding child find responsibilities. School districts, intermediate units and charter schools are required to conduct child find activities for children who may be eligible for services via Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. For additional information related to Section 504/Chapter 15 services, the parent may refer to Section 504, Chapter 15, and the Basic Education Circular entitled Implementation of Chapter 15. Also, school districts are required to conduct child find activities for children who may be eligible for gifted services via 22 Pa Code Chapter 16. For additional information regarding gifted services, the parent may refer to 22 PA Code Chapter 16. If a student is both gifted and eligible for Special Education, the procedures in IDEA and Chapter 14 shall take precedence.

This notice shall inform parents throughout the school district, intermediate unit, and charter school of the child identification activities and of the procedures followed to ensure confidentiality of information pertaining to students with disabilities or eligible young children. In addition to this public notice, each school district, intermediate unit, and charter school shall publish written information in the handbook and on the web site. Children ages three through twenty one can be eligible for special education programs and services. If parents believe that the child may be eligible for special education, the parent should contact the appropriate Regional Office or Charter School Principal identified at the end of this public notice.

Children age three through the age of admission to first grade are also eligible if they have developmental delays and, as a result, need Special Education and related services. Developmental delay is defined as a child who is less than the age of beginners and at least 3 years of age and is considered to have a developmental delay when one of the following exists: (i) The child’s score, on a developmental assessment device, on an assessment instrument which yields a score in months, indicates that the child is delayed by 25% of the child’s chronological age in one or more developmental areas. (ii) The child is delayed in one or more of the developmental areas, as documented by test performance of 1.5 standard deviations below the mean on standardized tests.

Once written parental consent is obtained, the district will proceed with the evaluation process. If the parent disagrees with the evaluation, the parent can request an independent education evaluation at public expense.

Program Development Once the evaluation process is completed, a team of qualified professional and parents determine whether the child is eligible. If the child is eligible, the individualized education program team meets, develops the program, and determines the educational placement. Once the IEP team develops the program and determines the educational placement, school district staff, intermediate unit staff, or charter school staff will issue a notice of recommended educational placement/prior written notice. Your written consent is required before initial services can be provided. The parent has the right to revoke consent after initial placement.

Confidentiality of Information: School districts, intermediate units and charter schools maintain records concerning all children enrolled in the school, including students with disabilities. All records are maintained in the strictest confidentiality. Your consent, or consent of an eligible child who has reached the age of majority under State law, must be obtained before personally identifiable information is released, except as permitted under the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). The age of majority in Pennsylvania is 21. Each participating agency must protect the confidentiality of personally identifiable information at collection, storage, disclosure, and destruction stages. One official at each participating agency must assume responsibility for ensuring the confidentiality of any personally identifiable information. Each participating agency must maintain, for public inspection, a current listing of the names and positions of those employees within the agency who have access to personally identifiable information.
