Dîner en Noir

So here’s the tea: Many of you are well aware of Dîner en Blanc, a fancy surprise-location-based dinner party whose dress code is, well, very white—like white where you pronounce the “h.” There’s something about the whole thing that feels extra bourgeois, like it’s one big Facebook/Instagram/Twitter opportunity/orgy. I can already see all the feed clogs and #DinerEnBlanc moments with big toothy smiles that make for wondrous new profile pics and OKCupid images.

Turns out, I’m not alone. Chris Nowacyzk tried to get in on the DeB fun and was stymied by a clunky registration process. He found out he wasn’t alone either, so he decided to whip up Dîner en Noir, not only to benefit Philabundance, but as a more transparent, non-profit take on flash dress-up dining experience of his own—just many shades darker and a whole lot wiser in my estimation; hey, black is just much more flattering and practical. Obviously, Nowacyzk agrees. “I am definitely more comfortable in black; it has a certain joie de vivre,” he told PW. “The symbolism of black and white has always been an important theme juxtaposed in art and film: lightness and darkness, naughty and nice. Noir will give us a jazzy feel that white doesn’t seem to convey in quite the same way. There is a certain allure to an all-black event—with a pop of red, this year’s complementary color.

Black is the antithesis of white. So, that’s why we chose it.”

Our man’s in good company. too, having enlisted the aid of DJ Robert Drake, who Nowacyzk says “has been Dîner en Noir’s biggest proponent from our inception. He reached out to a mutual Dîner en Noir friend and was really happy about our idea, effort and especially our desire to give back to the city of Philadelphia via our partnering with Philabundance.” Thankfully, Drake will get to chill at various points, since West Philadelphia Orchestra is also providing entertainment. It’s All at

Five Dollar Comedy Week Kate Banford and Aaron Nevins had an idea for a comedy show that would make fun of motivational speakers—hopefully, that’s still in the pipeline ‘cause that would be fun—but while they were hunting for spaces to host it, they stumbled upon the Shubin, which is no slouch in our venerable small-theatre arsenal but nonetheless humble, modest and cheap. They decided to rent it out for the week and fill its 42 seats (max 55) nightly with fresh new comedy on the super-affordable tip and dub it Five Dollar Comedy Week. Seriously, there are so many comedians: approximately 150 bodies who’ll participate in about 30 shows. Every single night is $5.

But there’ll also be secret shows, Kate Banford panels, nights where 60 oneminute monologues are delivered in 60 minutes, plus an opening and closing ceremony.

They’re doing the opening ceremony just right, and that’s with a banner and a torch in a mile-and-a-half march from Rittenhouse Square. The whole week will be very festive, partly because the affair is BYO, so no doubt there’ll be some bombed bombs and hammered hecklers. Banford and Nevins seem legitimately committed to providing affordable comic opportunities for both audiences and peers, and that’s what this week is all about. In fact, if you want an all-access wristband, you need only cough up $25. “That’s like an 83-percent discount,” Banford says. “We don’t care about money. We just really want people to come.”

Long Long Time In spring of 1972, late, great WMMR legend Ed Sciaky hosted a live performance at Sigma Studios, where a hot-shot Long Island-raised piano player and his ridiculously talented band played for a tiny local audience, and the whole 12-song session was recorded live. Less than six months after his solo debut, this scrappy musician, one Billy Joel, made a mark on Philadelphia radio that still makes old heads here smile—and whoa, what a night it was. The seven minutes of his “Captain Jack” alone, with its mention of the City of Brotherly Love—or “Philadelph-EYE-a,” as Joel sang so robustly—took hold of WMMR listeners like a vice grip, eventually slaughtering hits like Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird,” Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” and The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” in numbers of requests. In its aftermath, one million bootleg copies of that concert sold on the streets. A year or so afterward, Joel’s musical genius began capturing audiences across the nation, and the rest as they say, is history.

While that fateful show over 40 years ago brought together a host of amazing musicians to accompany Joel, Nov. 2011 marked the official release of that famous Sigma Studio performance via a bonus disc in his double Piano Man LP re-issue. Last year, its original musicians, named Long, Long Time, united for a NYC show, and now, World Café Live’s the site of another reunion—their final one. Be on hand to sing aloud, on- or off-key, in homage to the man himself—and the visionaries of Philly radio who appreciated his music first. // KENYA BEVERLY 8pm. $25. Charlie Manuel is counting himself lucky tonight. He’s getting an award he claims he doesn’t really care about, and, in a rare showing of fan support this season, virtually all the seats in Citizens Bank Park are filled.

“I was here nine years, and nine years went by real fast,” says Manuel, who stands on a stage in the infield, speaking jovially into a microphone. “We had some great teams, and everybody played a part in those teams.”

Manuel—who led the Phillies to five straight division championships, two World Series appearances and one World Series win between 2007 and 2011—is being honored with a plaque on the “Wall of Fame” beyond Center Field in Citizens Bank Park, where an etching of his mug will be on display next to Phillies greats like John Kruk and Steve Carlton—both of whom are physically standing on stage with Manuel, along with several other Phillies legends.

There are 39,153 fans here—the fourth highest home attendance of the year—to watch it happen.

Manuel’s got a blue and white, checkered button-down shirt on underneath his Phillies jersey. His face is beet red, and the view from the large screen shows he’s begun sweating as he rambles through an obviously-unprepared speech, in which he accidentally calls

Broad Street “Broadway,” in a reference to the 2008 World Series victory parade.

Fans cheer anyway.

Beer vendors strut up and down the aisles, too, calling out brands from Miller Lite and Coors Light to Stella Artois to Bud Light Raz-Ber-Rita, the latter of which the stadium began providing this year. Many beer sellers seem eager at the prospect of an extra hour to move their product.

“When you go to events like that, when they come to town, we look forward to working harder, working more, sweating more and pushing more,” says Andrew W. Reddin, a beer vendor who sells Miller Light, aisleto-aisle, “but it’s stuff like that that’s drawing crowds. Not the team.”

The Phillies 2014 season is a wash, as is, really, any upcoming season in the near future.

And, as vendors note, it’s actually been bad for a while. Of everyone associated with the Phillies’ 180-degree turn from first to worst, it’s actually the beer vendors whose pockets are directly impacted by the team’s suckitude.

“As far as vendors are concerned, the last three years have been pretty much consistently . . . you can call it bad,” says Reddin.

For many of Citizens Bank Park’s workers,

it’s simple trickledown economics: pay rises and falls with the team’s fortune. These workers, who vend beer section-by-section, aisle-by-aisle, are paid based on tips and commission. Poor teams mean fewer fans. Fewer fans means less product moved. Less product means less pay—and as the team gets worse, for lots of these workers, their wallets get emptier.

We got a reality check in June, when Emory University in Georgia released a study analyzing Major League Baseball fans, attempting to show the correlation of “at-

tendance sensitivity to performance and prices”—meaning, they conducted a scholarly study to find out which city’s fans were least likely to show up if ticket prices went up and winning percentage went down, using data from 1998 to 2013.

If you’re a Phillies season ticket holder, the results were not shocking.

“The most demanding MLB fans live in Philadelphia,” wrote Manish Tripathi, a professor of marketing at Emory, who conducted the study. “This fits the stereotype >>>

Despite the tired, clichéd, stupid example of “booing Santa” and the fact that he cited data which revolved around one of the two historic World Series wins, Tripathi has a point.

In 2009, the year after the Phillies won the World Series, Philadelphia had the thirdhighest attendance in baseball, averaging 44,453. They only lagged behind the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers.

In 2010, attendance went up, and so did our ranking: 45,027 fans per game, ranked second in the majors. 2011: First in the MLB; 45,440 per game. In 2012, we were first again (largely due to pre-season ticket sales), averaging 44,021 fans per game.

Then things changed. The Phillies missed the Wild Card in 2012, and the reign of powerhouse players like Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins was largely declared over, even though all three received large, extended contracts.

Last year, the team slipped to eighth in attendance. So far in 2014, we’re ranked 15th, averaging just 30,289 fans per homegame, the biggest one-year drop in Major League Baseball. And things are looking down.

“They’d just gone through a period from, say, 2004 to now—really 2007, when they won the five divisions in a row—where baseball was the biggest thing in town, and the Phillies were tremendously entertaining and successful,” WIP SportsRadio host Glen Macnow tells PW. “Then all of a sudden, the car crashes and now, people don’t want to go. I don’t blame people for that. It costs a lot to go down there. It’s a big commitment of time and money and people’s emotions, and they’re not eager to go see bad baseball.”

It’s 2014, and the Phillies are losers. They will continue to be losers throughout the immediate future. And it’s really hard to walk away from being a loser in sports, explains Temple University economics professor Michael Leeds, who focuses primarily on sports economics.

“Bill Veeck, the master showman of baseball [and franchise owner and promoter], said that there is no substitute for a winning team,” he says. “You can generate occasional bursts with giveaways, old-timers night, and other bells and whistles, but a losing team is a losing team. This is particularly true once a team has experienced winning. The Mets used to be lovable losers. Now they’re just losers.”

Leeds’ explanation, of course, helps explain the one-night ticket surge on Charlie Manuel night.

In addition to being in last place in their division, the Phillies are just boring. We’re 21st out of 30 MLB teams in runs per game.

We’re 25th in on-base percentage, 26th in batting average, 28th in slugging. In short, we suck.

“It’s the simplest thing in the world,” Macnow adds. “You put out a good product, and people are going to go buy it. You put out a bad product, people are going to stay away. Sports is a bit different in that for a lot of people, it’s a huge part of their social events. So if it’s part of your life, maybe this year instead of going to a dozen games, you go to five games—and that’s where the attendance gets killed.”

As goes attendance, so goes merchandise, according to Matt Powell of SportsOneSource, which tracks all sports merchandise sales. Back in 2010, the Phillies accounted for 18 percent market share of all MLB merchandise. Today, that number hovers around just 4 percent.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that the private corporation of the Philadelphia Phillies is actually suffering—or that the Phillies’ on-field woes could ever trickle up to actually hurt the city’s economy.

Leeds says if the franchise were to vanish from Philadelphia, the economic impact would be “maybe about the same as a midsize department store [going out of busi-

The organization, itself, has nothing to worry about.

But given the location of the team, Leeds and Burke add, the hyper-local impact is, of course, most felt by the workers at XFinity Live, McFadden’s and those inside the stadium—the ones, at least, who rely on tips and commission to get by.

Andrew Reddin’s sales are “way down”

this year from his peak in 2009. He guesses he’s selling about half the beer he once did, and he sees it in his commission. For Reddin, the problem comes from two different places: the team’s suck being one, the cost of a beer the other. Beer prices have consistently gone up over recent years, and a 16-ounce domestic now goes for $8.

“As far as people not buying as much, let’s be honest, how much higher can you really go before people say enough is enough?”

Reddin says. “Eight dollars for a 16-ounce beer? I mean, I’m an operator, not a policymaker. But it’s definitely a high price, and you can see the disgust on people’s faces. That

If the Phillies, Flyers, Eagles and Sixers were all to disappear, it would be hard to notice the impact on the overall economy of Philadelphia.”

Dr. Thomas Burke, an economist at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, agrees with the assessment. “That’s the whole concept of being a fan: even if they lose, people identify with a team, so I don’t think it wanes the way, say, a restaurant would. It loses its customers and the next thing you know, it’s in bankruptcy; it can’t sustain itself. Sports teams can sustain themselves, and that’s because they have other revenue besides attendance that void them and keep them up so,” he says.

In addition to pure attendance, Citizens Bank Park is regularly rented out. Their merchandise share is small, but it still exists.

And, recently, the team signed a $2.5 billion contract with Comcast to televise games over the next 25 years. Phillies players have become members of the community, too, setting up and participating in charity work; the Phillies organization gave $1,087,274 in grants to charities and communities across

When he started working at Veterans Stadium 12 years ago, he says, beers were $5.50, and sales were good. The team wasn’t great in 2002, but, he says, attendance seemed steady because of the novelty of the 30-plusyear-old stadium’s imminent demolishing in 2003. When Citizens Bank Park opened, attendance was again high because of the novelty of the new stadium.

Around mid-decade, the Phillies began bringing up players like Utley and Howard, whom people interested in the team’s future were counting on.

Now is the first time, it seems, that there’s no hope for the Phillies, and, really no reason for a casual fan to go to a game.

“You’re not getting the best performance out of your players now, people are getting pissed off, and they’re not staying the full game,” Reddin notes. “I see people come in for the bobble heads and leave. For them, it’s more worth getting the knick-knack than watching the game.”

Beer vendors pay the same price, per beer, for which they sell them. So, for instance, a worker might show up at Citizens Bank Park,

buy $192 worth of beer (a 24-case at $8 each), then sell them one-by-one, making their money back—and, often, collecting tips. Just like your bartender, it’s customary at the ballpark to tip your beer seller. For Reddin, tips have remained relatively steady over the years. And for each case he sells, he earns 15 percent commission.

That’s a double-edged sword, of course.

The commission on an $8 beer is more than he and other beer vendors earned when beers were $5.50 or $7.75, but a higher price means it’s harder to move the product, and skidding attendance figures mean fewer potential customers.

A larger selection of available alcohol at the park has been good for fans, less so for some vendors. In the past, one’s choices were limited to Miller, Budweiser and Coors. Now, there are at least 20 canned beers, 18 tapped beers and seven bottled beers, giving the customer a fine selection in the age of hops fetishism, but meaning unless your customers are loyal to you (which many of Reddin’s are; he even has a Facebook page with 490 fans at the time of this report and has been a guest on the Preston and Steve Show), it’s harder to sell just one brand.

The job has its physical drawbacks, too— as any job in which you’re carrying 30 pounds of beer and ice on your head would. “You get used to the pain, let’s put it that way,” Reddin says. “A lot of guys have problems as far as their backs and their knees, but you gotta stretch, you gotta do all that. Some guys now carry it with a strap on the shoulder. I’m just more comfortable carrying it on my head.

I’ve gotten used to it.”

Originally, he worked the stadium as a side job; then, after losing his construction work during the recession, Reddin dedicated himself to the stadium circuit. He serves at Flyers and Eagles games, too, and notes that right now, Philadelphia just feels more like a hockey and football town.

That will probably continue. After some boneheaded moves by general manager Ruben Amaro, including big contracts to legacy players and player-friendly clauses, which promise bonuses for meeting a certain number of plate appearances or starts, most commodified players are harder to trade—as evidenced by the team unloading no players before this year’s trade deadline. The Phillies are worse than they’ve been in years, and they’re spending a franchise-record $184 million on payroll. And on Charlie Manuel night, Amaro was the single person in the ballpark to get booed during the ceremony.

“I understand why attendance is low,” says Reddin. “I understand why people aren’t spending money. It’s how I get paid, but I understand. I appreciate the fact that if you can’t tip me, you can’t tip me, too—you paid enough money to come see a bad product, you know what I mean?” n

meaty, despite the fact that they’re resolutely vegetarian-friendly (though not vegan).

Occasionally, however, there was a misstep.

I loved everything about the red beet deviled eggs except the fact that there was just a bit too much tarragon in the yolks, which also were brightened up with chives and parsley.

Chicken pot pie croquettes were memorable for the thoughtful and fun filling, but it was never given a chance to really shine because the fried pie-crust-based cocoon was a bit too thick.

The Amish chicken and waffle, however, was a real success. The hearty cuts of tender chicken breast, cooked sous vide with a cream of leeks, were accompanied by a lavender waffle and a chicken-skin “rind” dusted with barbecue spices. All of it was well-anchored with a comforting white gravy studded with carrots and peas.

This is the kind of food that’s best enjoyed with a beer, of which there are plenty of solid ones on offer here—it’s not a huge list, but it is well-considered given the menu and the feel of the place: Grown-up and casual, exactly the sort of spot you could happily lose several hours in, even if you’re not eating a full meal.

But the thoughtful cocktails are also worth pairing up with your food. The Thinking Machine, with its acidic seam of coriander shrub and lemon pushing up against Amaro Montenegro and the sweetness of bourbon, would work beautifully to cut through some of the heavier notes of, for example, the chicken and waffle. (The tight wine selection also offers some solid options.)

And with dessert, I had great luck with an Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout alongside the hearty donuts filled with bourbon apple butter, as well as the homemade ice creams and sorbet: Ending a meal like this with a spoonful of the phenomenal ice cream and a swig of imperial stout is tough to beat. The only thing that could make it better, I think, would be a strip of bacon to chase it with. Now that’s a thought. 

any years ago, a friend introduced me to the concept of bacon porn, and the underlying culino-philosophical concept that everything can and is made infinitely better by the addition of more pork. (It always reminded me of a gluttonous riff on the old Saturday Night Live skit, but this one with Christopher Walken incessantly yelling “More pig parts!” instead of for the cowbell.)

Of course, the world of food doesn’t work that way, and over the years, I’ve encountered plenty of instances where adding more bacon or pancetta or guanciale simply results in a heavy, undifferentiated mess.

So it was with the slightest bit of nervousness that I beheld the apple-braised pork belly & dumplings at Society Hill Society during a recent visit. The crisp-topped belly, and the framing element of the perfectly cylindrical dumplings, seemed perfect on their own.

But then the ham consommé was poured over it all, and while its deep, burnished color glistened pleasingly in the warm light of the place, I had a momentary twinge of fear that it would just be too much.

It was not.

Rather, the result, a delicate interplay between the seemingly infinite ways that cuts of the pig can taste and the subtle fruity sweetness of that belly, set up against the savory depth of the consommé—all of it broken up with lemon-bright apple and radish salad— was stunning.

The best dishes here are like that: They plumb depths of richness and expression without devolving into the heavy-handed or the self-consciously overwrought. And it’s not just with meats. Olive oil-poached fluke could easily have come off as gimmicky beneath its painstakingly rendered simulacrum of scales crafted in razor-thin slices of blanched zucchini, but they turned out to be a necessary aspect of the entire construct, lending an unusual vegetal note to it all, excellent against the roasted corn nage and the turmeric-twisted, Indian-influenced tomato stew.

Pickled white asparagus, each snappy finger of it swirling with a coriander-complex brine and the lot of them crowned with hen of the woods mushrooms, found a fabulous foil in the layer of homemade farmer’s cheese spread between it and the slices of Metropolitan sourdough. Pierogies, their skins hearty yet not gummy (a difficult middle ground to find) were filled with a silky puree of trufflescented potatoes all luscious with the incorporation of sour cream. Slid through the sweet caramelized onions and the cooling creme fraiche, each bite came off as almost

The Unforgettable Dance

How Philly’s Ukrainian community held doggedly onto their culture—through the Cold War and into the 21st century.

ctober 1977, Philadelphia: They stood outside the Locust Street Theatre in their Sunday best, men in suits with Ukrainian flag pins on their lapels, women in wool coats over dresses and colorful embroidered blouses. Young and old, they had come with chants on their lips and signs painted in protest: The USSR had spent decades pushing to homogenize Ukraine’s traditional language and culture into Soviet uniformity, and the Ukrainian families living in the United States were pained to see their heritage being lost back home.

Inside the theatre stood the trigger for their protest, the exception that proved the rule: the 65 dancers and musicians of the Yatran Ukrainian Dance Company, dispatched to the U.S. in a grand gesture by the Soviets for what was to be a once-in-a-lifetime 46city U.S. tour. Leading the troupe was Anatolij Krivokhija, their artistic director—a choreographer whose brilliance had demanded recognition both from Ukrainian audiences and the Soviet government, garnering him not just the title of People’s Artist of Ukraine but the USSR’s highest civilian honor, the Order of Lenin.

The world paid attention whenever Soviet dancers, artists, writers and scientists were allowed to travel outside of the USSR, because for the past 30 years of the Cold War, it had happened so seldom. Now, the Yatran troupe was garnering praise from critics and audiences alike. The New York Times’s Clive Barnes had raved: “Among the world’s best… We forget how many of the folklorist dances we think of as ‘typically Russian’ are, in fact, Ukrainian.”

It was quite a show. In a kaleidoscope of color, female dancers formed neat lines of intricate steps and pirouettes, while their rainbow-colored ribbons swirled around the heads of the men kicking in perfect syncopation at their feet. Soloists took turns at center stage, their movements conjuring joy, love and loss as, behind it all, musicians echoed the same life rhythms with rich violins and voices.

One young Ukrainian American from Philadelphia sitting in the audience, Taras Lewyckyj, was struck by the bold, pointedly non-communist vibe of the performance.

“The choreographies were more about the individuals,” he recalls, “as opposed to just more people doing the same actions.”

“During that period of the Cold War, dance became a leading form of diplomacy,” explains Anthony Shay, professor of dance history at Pomona College. “They’re not just pretty dances set on the stage. There’s a mes-

sage behind them, and that message is invariably political.”

Indeed: After 10 sold-out performances in Philadelphia, Yatran was mysteriously shut down and recalled by the Soviet government. Back home in the USSR, the troupe’s artistic director Krivokhija was fired and blacklisted. It was rumored that he had died, and an obituary was released. Like so many others who threatened Soviet ideals during the Cold War, Krivokhija was silenced and his choreography effectively erased.

But there were those who saw Yatran perform who never forgot—those like Lewyckyj, for whom it was a profoundly singular experience, one whose impact is still reverberating through his life in Philly today.

More than 60,000 Ukrainian Americans live in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, making it the third largest community in the United States. Last year, more than 2,000 people celebrated Ukraine’s Independence Day by attending the region’s annual Ukrainian Folk Festival, which returns this Sunday, Aug. 24, to Horsham, Pa., 20 miles north of the city.

As he grew up, Taras Lewyckyj continued to dance and pursue a life in the arts, maintaining his connection to Philly’s Ukrainian community even as he travelled overseas

to work with teachers in Ukraine and other parts of Europe. He became the first foreigner to receive a degree in Ukrainian dance methodology from the Kyiv University of Culture and Performing Arts, and in 1995 he became the artistic director of Philadelphia’s Voloshky Ukrainian Dance Ensemble, based in Jenkintown, also home to a Ukrainian language school and several other Ukrainian organizations.

Lewyckyj had never forgotten the majesty of the Yatran dancers he had seen and met in 1977. So when, while visiting the newly independent Ukraine after the Soviet Union’s breakdown in the ’90s and studying with dancers and musicians there, he learned to his amazement that the discredited Yatran director Krivokhija was, in fact, still alive and teaching in the Ukrainian city of Kirovohrad, Lewyckyj eagerly reached out to contact the choreographer.

“I approached Anatlolij Krivokhija about reviving the Yatran program because it was an inspiration to me,” he says. “I wanted it somewhere so that I could pull from it to create new works, and he was very reluctant. Several more years passed, and each year I would ask him, and he finally said, ‘Well, we could recreate something like it.’ He was 85 years old, so we knew time was of the essence.”

Lewyckyj began to collaborate with Krivokhija to create a new performance based on Yatran’s tour in 1977. After six years of travel, online communication and collaboration with Ukrainian native groups including the Kirovohrad Philharmonic, they finally completed the concert—including the restoration of the original musical score and costumes. It was performed to the delight of audiences in Kirovohrad.

With support from the Ukrainian community in Philadelphia, Lewyckyj returned to the U.S. in the summer of 2012 with 25 Ukrainian dancers and musicians. They were welcomed into the community, housed and fed, and began working with Voloshky to stage a collaborative performance for audiences in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

After several successful concerts, the dancers returned home. Working together, Lewyckyj and Krivokhija had successfully recreated Yatran’s unforgettable program—but once again, it was met with political dissonance and came at a great cost. Upon their return to Ukraine, Krivokhija and many key dancers and musicians were fired from the Kirovohrad Philharmonic, seemingly due to politics.

Frank If you’ve seen the aggressively-pleasant fiberglass head on the lead singer of the avant-garde band at the center of Frank, rest assured that’s merely the beginning. If you haven’t, don’t let the head scare you—it’s not as easy a punchline as it seems. Frank is only slightly concerned about the little ways in which we face the weirdness of the world and much more concerned about what happens when we give in.

Stomping joyfully down the line between comedy and tragedy, the pitch-black Frank benefits from a excellent, nimble cast. Michael Fassbender’s Frank is a performance so engaging that the head itself seems to take on an impossible expressiveness, a disconnect the movie occasionally trades on. As rookieturned-puppetmaster Jon, Domhnall Gleeson gives an incisive performance that’s just as uncomfortable as it needs to be, and Maggie Gyllenhaal positively revels in the unforgiving thereminist Clara. It helps that their material makes the most of them.

Frank’s screenplay is loosely based on scriptwriter Jon Ronson’s time as keyboard player for the Frank Sidebottom band— where the lead singer wore an awfully familiar fake head—but it ditches any rose-colored glasses for Gleeson’s deliciously mercenary arc. His descent into de facto manager of a band that rightfully hates him is alternately funny and grueling, and the slow build to inevitable artistic disaster makes for a fascinating journey.

However, the cringe humor and occasional cynicism wouldn’t be half as resonant without the film’s quiet heart and the hope of finding the world on your own terms at last. Frank is a ruthless but deeply felt look at music, identity and fame.

And if you only see one movie this year that features an avantgarde band led by a man in a fiberglass head, please make it this one. (Genevieve Valentine) REVIEW

Life After Beth There’s a moment in Life After Beth that encapsulates its promise: The teenage Zach (Dane DeHaan), having found peace with girfriend Beth’s (Aubrey Plaza) return from the dead as soon as she suggested sex, fights her parents to take her out. They don’t want her to be seen, he doesn’t want to keep her death a secret, and undead Beth just really, really wants to go hiking.

But despite solid performances, it’s a tonal jumble—he’s in a sex comedy, she’s in an unsettling drama, and her parents are in an indie about loss. Here and as a whole, the pieces of Life After Beth don’t come together.

Jeff Baena’s first feature has moments of dark humor—turns out smooth jazz can calm the undead, leading to tense faceoffs scored with elevator music. But for a brisk 90 minutes, Life After Beth feels overstretched. Is Beth just too much of a good thing, a cautionary symbol? (Despite Plaza’s intensity, she’s never allowed to be much more than that.) Is it a quiet zombie drama on a small scale, framed with family grief? (The supporting cast feels underutilized, but nails what they get.) Is it a satire of endof-relationship dramas, complete with a too-convenient new ingenue (Anna Kendrick) just when you need her most? The answer’s yes, and no, often simultaneously, which could be fantastic, but gets lost in the middle.

World War Z, Shaun of the Dead, Les Revenants and its remake The Returned, Warm Bodies, In the Flesh, The Walking Dead— you can’t throw a stone nowadays without hitting an empty grave, and to do a zombie flick means knowing what you want to bring to the party. Life After Beth can’t wrangle its handful of potential concepts, so it ends up working hard without ending up quite anywhere. (G.V.)

Before They Were Cool

What’s artistically possible, and what’s artistically likely? The tension between the two feeds Frank.

I

n Life After Beth, teen protagonist Zach takes his undead girlfriend to the beach for a moonlit concert. He strums earnestly on his guitar about the night and his beloved, and gets about halfway through a verse before she snaps at him to shut up, snarling that the song is terrible. It’s the first sign that something’s wrong with her. In Frank, also out this week, protagonist Jon mentions that he dabbles in songwriting himself, and when hostile band member Clara demands he perform a song immediately, he does, grinding through a handful of abortive attempts at opening verses, despite a look on his face that tells us everything we need to know about his dearth of talent. It’s the first sign that something’s wrong with him.

The two films share almost nothing else: It’s a fleeting moment for one movie and a crucial turning point for the other, and Life After Beth fumbles through half a dozen tones, while Frank relies heavily on its iron grip on the mood of the room. Still, it’s a rare thing to see a musical performance interrupted not by a plot point, but by the revulsion of its intended audience—and for Frank in particular, it raises important points about how best to watch it.

Some people will need the help, since watching Frank is not necessarily a pleasant experience. This particular performance scene might be one of the most excruciating on screens this summer, but it’s not alone. There’s an awful lot of time spent inside Jon’s head, from his Twitter updates to his songwriting attempts, and as Jon grows less bearable, he becomes both funnier and more terrifying to behold.

But there’s also a comforting narrative distance throughout much of the film, as if attempting to protect us from the full exhaustion of so many intense people trapped in a cabin and rehearsing day and night. For the bulk of the film, as they record their next album, we often drop in on

them for staccato bursts of emotional dysfunction and skip out just as quickly. But part of its success as a dark comedy is its earnest investment in its lead characters, which gives us a reason to follow them—and even more, to believe in them. (Clara is really intense. That theremin riff is probably killer, right?) And that belief is crucial, given that, at heart, Frank is a fable about how mediocrity is the death of art, and fame is the death of integrity.

There’s an inevitability attached to people who love a thing, declaring they knew about it before it was cool; if you love enough things, it’s just a numbers game. That actor you like will eventually end up all over Tumblr. That band you like will have a song on The Vampire Diaries. And there’s no small value in recognizing and judging something for what it is. Streets of Fire is by no means a great film, and if you expect one, you’re in for a dire 90 minutes.

But if you need a post-apocalyptic rockabilly musical action flick, you’re not going to find a better one—and realizing the world might actually need that is probably a mark of pop-culture wisdom. Much of Frank’s dramatic tension comes from the disconnect between what’s artistically possible and what’s artistically likely. (They’d all hate Streets of Fire.)

Still, while we can all safely decry the franchise-grubbing and box-office pandering of the new TMNT and Transformers, there’s a vast dark ocean of art in which it’s easy to get lost. Frank’s last act gently questions the objective judgment of the quality of art—if it fulfills you, it must count—but it’s the suggestion of a movie that knows it’s a consolation prize given to people we like too much to leave unhappy. For this movie, only overwhelming focus and aggressive outsiderness produce pure art. The rest is a marketing ploy. It knows the band before it got cool. 

hris Ward and Andrew Thiboldeaux are sitting in a booth at Johnny Brenda’s, the Fishtown haunt where Ward books talent, to talk about their band Pattern is Movement’s still-new album and a bill they’re headlining at the Spruce Street Harbor Park with Moon Bounce on Thursday. Their selftitled fourth, out on the Hometapes label, is only three and a half months old, and, as I put it, the record feels like their softest.

“Softest how?” Ward asks earnestly.

“Less harsh, less thrashy—a little more melodic, a little more delicate,” I try to explain.

“I would agree with you. I’d definitely say it’s rounder,” Ward replies, crediting many things with the wonderful end result. “Because I was part of the engineering, that was definitely part of my idea. I wanted to round it out.” Thiboldeaux composed the record, as they put it, and Ward laid in his drum parts last, a rather unconventional but ultimately effective method for letting the drum parts find their home on each track.

“One of the things that we did was something I’d never heard anybody do: We recorded the drums last,” Ward says. “My drums were responding to everything that was existing. So my parts subconsciously were cutting in and out where I wanted something to stick out.” Or when he wanted them to fade into flickering percussion, delicate French horn, lush strings or airy synthesizers. Ward’s pretty clear: This was a great idea for the record, for him, for the sound they were seeking, and for the mixing he’d hoped to achieve. “[It] turned out to be the best decision I’ve ever made as a drummer. There’s things on that record that I can’t play live–it just happened. I’ve tried,” he confesses. “I’m not a trained drummer, so there’s a bit of mystery to what drums are. I don’t really know what I’m doing.” Of course, he knows what he’s doing. But there’s a great freedom in the admission that their process isn’t standard or traditional. In any way.

Their dynamic as Pattern Is Movement is a curious one, spanning 20 years and resulting in a seemingly natural creative process. Thiboldeaux is quiet, but chimes in with astute observations as Ward relates stories from their deeply Christian childhoods: sharing A Tribe Called Quest’s “Bonita Applebum” at a musical show-and-tell in middle school, pocketing lunch money to buy records from Sam Goody’s and only being allowed to watch MTV or listen to rock music when it was Stryper.

“Ever see Jesus Camp?” Ward asks. “That’s us.” I reassure them that they’ve made it out alive. Thiboldeaux jokingly asks, “Have we?” then concedes, “Yeah, we did.”

“I think music was a big part of making it out for me,” says Ward, who made a life-changing decision when he matriculated at the super-conservative Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA for philosophy and religious studies. Thiboldeaux went the much-lessspiritually-specific route by attending Lock Haven University. They migrated to Philadelphia almost a dozen years ago and, at the insistence of one of their heroes, John Vanderslice, formed a band— despite the beaten-in imperative of us all to get a “real job” at 21.

I list some of my favorite duos in rock music: Sleigh Bells, Phantogram, Quasi and [old school] Black Keys, and Ward adds Wye Oak to the list, the Baltimore duo with whom they just toured.

And Thiboldeaux tosses out Tegan and Sara, Hella, Spencer Seim and Zach Hill’s thrash duo from Sacramento. Quite fitting company for PIM. Their 2004 full-length debut, The (Im)possibility of Longing, feels like a distant memory, even though it still captures the lovely interplay between the two. Often dubbed math or prog rock,

you can hear the Pinback reference they often get—but also bits of newbs like Speedy Ortiz and the post-punk scuzz beauty of The Men. But on the new one, they sound refreshed after a little hiatus. Take the beauty of “Suckling,” for instance. There are finger snaps, playful key romps, sluggish percussion and some of the band’s prettiest vocal accomplishments. You can hear bits of the R&B and hip-hop they were secretly enjoying as teens.

We talk about the evolution of artists and how fun it is to cheer on folks whose sound changes from record to record. They set up a tour and opened for St. Vincent’s Annie Clark back in 2008, and loved watching her take the delicacy of 2007’s Marry Me to the prog bizarro beauty of her eponymous LP earlier this year. To convey how he cherishes the way Clark’s gone deeper and darker with each St. Vincent album, Ward recalls the Jennifer Lawrenceexecuted Rosalyn character in American Hustle: She loves the beautiful stink of her nail polish, a smell that she can’t get enough of, even if it smells a little of rotten eggs. “The same thing can be said about our transition,” Ward says. “I think she’s being her authentic self.”

For Pattern Is Movement, they wanted to sonically “wear the rap and R&B and gospel that we grew up on” on the its metaphysical sleeve. “It’s part of the DNA of the record,” Ward boasts, cheerfully reveling in the local rave reviews it’s received over the summer.

“I’ve kind of had a love-hate with the [past] records, and I don’t have it at all with this record,” he beams. Sure, it “took forever to make, and I think that’s part of it. shield of armor, a way to protect myself without letting on that I had fear. After going dry, I had to learn how to be a person without it. How would I go dancing by myself without a drink? How would I chill after a poopy day? It was leveling up difficulty-wise in the video game of life. Eventually I got a hang of it, and it was the most liberating skillset ever.

Alcohol consumption is normalized in our culture—much like caffeine, but starkly in contrast to marijuana—a part of every rite of passage, a cornerstone of every social event.

Philadelphians have lost their minds at the suggestion the pop-up beer gardens might go away, stirring up more political activism in the last few weeks than education budgets, prison reform, corruption and gun violence put together.

Our schools might collapse, but bitch, do NOT even think about taking away our freedom to drink beer in what used to be a parking lot.

As an experiment, I’m going to alcohol-free again. Just like last time I quit, one might not see why that’s necessary. I’m killing it at work, juggling a whole slew of responsibilities.

But I’m not looking for rock bottom. I’m curious if there’s another level up. 

y name is Timaree, and sometimes I wonder if I’m an alcoholic. Not in the sense that my life has become unmanageable or that I’m powerless in the face of a shot of vodka—but, due to the nature of the crowds with which I run, it’s become customary to have at least one drink almost every day. As an experiment, I’m going cold turkey for a month, just to see what happens.

Perhaps it seems counterintuitive, given how much effort I devote to fitness, that I would imbibe in sugary poison so regularly. But hardcore gym folks are often also hardcore partiers. I have a handful of friends whom I only see in two contexts: lifting obscene amounts of weight or throwing back obscene amounts of booze. Consider how many running clubs are created on the premise that the best way to cap off a long run is beer. Some of us just go hard all the time, I guess.

I also spend a lot of my time around performers: burlesque folks, comedians, drag queens, other creatures of the night. If you’re not drinking in this crowd, it’s because you’re on the wagon now, after having spent plenty of time the other way. We work in venues that exist to sell alcohol and, on many occasions, drink tickets are part of the pay. Who turns down part of their compensation? For some, a nip calms the pre-show jitters or celebrates a stellar performance—or dulls the ache of an act that tanked.

Sometimes, nothing feels better than telling the cerebral cortex to shut up.

Alcoholism and drug abuse have always been problems in the LGBT community as well. Marginalized people often seek temporarily soothing but self-destructive coping strategies to deal with harassment, ostracism and systematic oppression. And the queer scene is organized around events where alcohol consumption is a central activity. If you want to find other gay people in a strange city, your best bet is to find the gay bar. And soon, it becomes an association we have with people themselves, a Pavlovian response to seeing friends. There are a number of people whom I’ve known for years and sincerely adore but we’ve never been in each other’s presence without one of us drinking. Given where I spent my time, it seemed completely normal to booze five nights a week. It was part of every hobby I had, and it was what everyone else was doing.

Back in grad school, I took two years off from drinking, just to see what would happen. It didn’t feel like I had a problem, and I certainly wouldn’t have listened to any suggestion that I needed to slow down. My bosses were happy with my work, school papers were on point, I was competently managing a whole litany of other responsibilities. But when I announced that I was quitting, my roommate sighed with relief. Evidently she’d been trying to tell me that I needed to do this for some time. I was so in denial that I hadn’t even heard her.

And it wasn’t until I was sober for a while that it was apparent to me what I had been missing. I never noticed how fucking annoying drunk people are, for one. Or the way booze had become a crutch when I was anxious in a crowd or wanted to dance on an otherwise empty dance floor. It was something to do before my friends showed up to a party (before smartphones were a thing). Alcohol was an invisible

The Real Thugs As Ferguson shows us, white Americans continue to blame people of color for their white-sustained suffering.

Y

ou may recall that President George W. Bush was profoundly offended when, in the wake of death and destruction in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, Kanye West went on national television and said: “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.” Five years later, Bush was still smarting from that accusation; he called it “one of the most disgusting moments of my presidency.” The president was sincerely pissed, and, you know, it’s easy to see why.

Because here’s the thing: George Bush arguably cared about black people exactly as much as most white people do.

Which is to say: a little.

Based upon reports coming out of Ferguson, Missouri, police and white American society together continue to brutalize, dehumanize and marginalize people of color. Whether it is callous indifference to the obscenity of George Zimmerman’s acquittal or outright racist victim-blaming for police brutality in Missouri, it’s obvious that white Americans aren’t really interested in understanding anything more than they already think they do about the lives of people of color.

We see this malignancy continuing to grow in our feverish body politic, most notably with the way white people are talking about the goings-on in Ferguson. Despite the protests being completely justified, and despite police repeatedly violating constitutional rights of civilians, protestors and journalists, some white Americans simply do not care.

For instance, bullshit talk about “looting” a McDonald’s (for what, ketchup packets and plastic forks?) has threatened to supplant the real story: Black protestors were finding shelter from tear gas and rubber bullets.

Evidence of this is well detailed. One woman, hysterically crying, begged for McDonald’s milk to be poured on her face to wash away the irritants fired at her by mostly white men in uniforms. There’s even a now-iconic photograph of this. Unfortunately, this truth does not fit into the lie white Americans would like to believe. As such, it is discarded in favor of a dehumanizing trope that reinforces their prejudiced perceptions.

Many white people, indeed, would much rather continue to reinforce their prejudices to feel better about themselves.

After all, there’s a tacit, deep misery in white America. It is fed with a complete lack of empathy toward people of color and reared with subtle social bristles: from the person crossing the street as black men approach to the parent who still, in 2014, is queasy about their daughter dating a black man.

(It’s ironic that racist white people sneer that white civilrights allies are obsessed with assuaging white guilt—when, really, it’s their own quiet, everyday racist fears that are born of that very guilt. One of the dark truths of human nature, after all, is that it’s much easier to viscerally spurn those whom we know we’ve wronged than it is to excommunicate those who’ve wronged us.)

Some of us whites make it continually worse, too. We not only rub salt on the wound, but we create fresh ones. There are white Americans in Pennsylvania today riding around with Confederate flag bumper stickers: an implied support

for traitors with nothing but disdain for the United States who also enslaved, raped, murdered and tortured black Americans.

And let’s not wave that sort of thing off as “Pennsyltucky hillbillies,” either—Philadelphia’s urban history isn’t much better. Not only were the Phillies once upon a time the most racist baseball team in American history, but an outright racist, Frank Rizzo, still garners affection from many of the city’s white residents. Rizzo repeatedly brutalized Philadelphians of color because he could, masquerading his hatred behind “respect for rule of law” just as police continue to do in Missouri right now.

The specter of Rizzo continues to haunt Philadelphia, too.

An African American woman told me at a rally recently that she still cannot trust police because of Rizzo’s tenure. She said this while standing in LOVE Park, within eyesight of the larger-than-life statue of Rizzo that waves happily in front of

“It’s just an excuse for people to do whatever they want to do,” said another. the municipal services building. There is nothing fond, funny or affectionate about this man; why he’s still memorialized in a city so populated by people of color mystifies me.

Then again, callous indifference to the suffering of minorities certainly isn’t a Philadelphia-specific thing. Writing for The New Republic, Julia Ioffe details her encounters with white residents of nearby St. Louis and their reactions to the civil unrest in Ferguson. “The kid wasn’t really innocent,” said one white person. “It’s just an excuse for people to do whatever they want to do,” said another.

Ironically, that person seemed to forget that it’s white America that gets to do whatever it damn well pleases without consequence. Those who raided the U.S. economy last decade, for instance, destroying countless American homes, lives and livelihoods, suffered no consequences. White victories and privileges in society are misleading, though. They rot us from the inside out because, deep down, we know that what we enjoy, what we have as white Americans has been, without merit, given or, with extreme prejudice, taken from others. It is avarice and greed dressed up in pretty words about the American dream.

Is it not clearly better to be spiritually sick and alive, after all, enjoying white privileges left and right, than it is to be a person of color in this country? While white people suffer no real consequence for their intransigence against American ideals of real equality, people of color suffer routinely under this system.

Michael Brown, like countless others before him, lost his life—during a jaywalking stop.

Oh, local police there insinuated he’d robbed a convenience store; never mind that he was carrying no weapon and that review of the whole video tells a somewhat different story. More importantly, even the cops acknowledge that the white police officer, Darren Wilson, did not suspect Brown of the alleged robbery. Wilson encountered Brown walking down the middle of the street. And in the wake of that offense, Michael Brown was shot six times. One of the shots hit him directly in the eye; another hit him on the inside of the right his palm, indicating his hands were likely up in surrender. Still, Wilson continued firing, shooting the teenager dead.

Why? Because two sets of standards exist in this country: one set for white people and one set for people of color.

ter Brown was shot to death, a white man named Kevin Miner, a burglary suspect, encountered police. He allegedly broke one officer’s hand and kicked another in the encounter. Miner was not, however, shot.

Do the math.

“We’re dividing white and black again,” one white man whined on Fox News this past week, lamenting the protests in Ferguson. “America has no color,” he insisted, “it’s all one color.”

There it is: America has no color, according to white people. Our spiritual sickness as a race has, apparently, blinded us as well.

Back in the 1960s, James Baldwin observed this sickness, too. He saw its roots in white America’s need to feel “better than”; after all, it’s easier to feel better about yourself when you look at someone you perceive to be worse than you. “White people,” he said, “will have quite enough to do in learning how to accept and love themselves and each other, and when they have achieved this—which will not be tomorrow and may very well be never—the Negro problem will no longer exist, for it will no longer be needed.”

As of today, that will still not be tomorrow. n

they kept saying over and over: “It’s okay.

It will be all right.” They used the words like a mantra, a comforting collection of words in a foreign tongue. Maybe saying it would help the words become true.

“Somebody blurted out, ‘We shall overcome,’ and that song just became a motto of this project during the making of it,” Lewyckyj explains in Dancing Diplomats, “We very quickly wrote to Kyiv, to my friend, and I said, ‘Can you orchestrate this for this orchestra?’

And we tried it out as part of a closing. Because the show becomes part of overcoming a lot, part of changing and adapting.”

Today, he remains hopeful amid the political conflict. “Ukraine is now at a crossroads in its democracy,” he says. “Some call it a crossroads or tipping point. If nothing else, the arts can be, maybe, an example or a tool to pull this together and to get people to talk and to work together again—like we did.” n

position—but the Ukrainian choreographer is proud that his work will live on. Thanks in part to a grant by the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage, Lewyckyj was able to work with videographer Henry Nevison to record the Yatran revival’s preparation and performance; a documentary film is now in the works, titled Dancing Diplomats, that explores the dramatic conflict between Ukrainian and Russian politics and culture.

Juxtaposed with footage of dancers working together to preserve and share their heritage, Dancing Diplomats presents images from the conflicts that were stirring in Ukraine in 2012, when the Ukrainian Parliament passed a bill allowing local and regional governments to grant official status to Russian and other languages—a step toward aligning the nation with Russia rather than the European Union, which popular favor preferred. Hundreds of protestors clashed with riot police in Kyiv—a precursor to the massive “EuroMaidan” demonstration that would unfold there a year later protesting against the president and his corrupt regime, leading to the president fleeing the country and a new government being elected. Following the Maidan, of course, conflict between Ukraine and Russia escalated: The Crimea region was annexed by Russia; Russian-backed separatists declared the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk to be independent; and a Malaysia Airlines passenger jet was shot down, seemingly by separatists, near the Ukraine–Russia border.

As the visiting Ukrainian dancers watched the early preludes to these events unfolding in Ukraine from the homes of their Philadelphia hosts in 2012, Lewyckyj remembers,

I’m a 20-something genetic male. I thought for a while that I might be trans, but I ended up deciding that while I hate my masculine features and like girl clothes, I have no desire to be female. I also don’t identify with a particular sexual orientation. I’ve been with both boys and girls, and currently I’m with a trans girl. I’ve never been a fan of real-people pornography, but recently I’ve found myself indulging in trans-girl porn. Is it insensitive to have a predilection for trans girls?

My girlfriend wants to get sex-reassignment surgery (SRS) in the future, and while I support her wholeheartedly and have never said anything to indicate otherwise, I think she knows that I’m happy with her current set of equipment and I don’t have any desire for her to go through with SRS. I believe she resents me for this. But this isn’t a relationship question. My question is more of a catchall: Is it insensitive, as a rule, to be attracted to trans (or intersex) girls?

Unavoidable Gender Hullabaloo “Having a sexual preference—whether it’s liking guys with red hair, tall women, sports fans, blueeyed agender individuals, men with vaginas, or women with penises—is fine,” says Parker Marie Molloy, a freelance writer and trans media activist whose writing has appeared in The New York Times, the Advocate and on Slate. “So long as the preference is not the sole reason for the attraction, so long as UGH remembers that trans people are actually human beings with a diverse range of emotions, interests and experiences and aren’t solely defined by their transness, UGH should be able to avoid coming off as creepy.”

Building on Molloy’s point: If the only thing you like about your current girlfriend is the fact that she’s trans, you’re probably guilty of objectifying her. But if her trans-girl cuteness is one of the things you find attractive about her—even if it’s the thing that initially drew you to her, even if it’s something you focus on during sex—you’re not objectifying.

“As is the case with any sort of physical, emotional or sexual attraction, a preference crosses over into the realm of objectification only when the person’s potential love interest is reduced to a single aspect of their life,” says Molloy. “So UGH’s preference for trans women is only insensitive and objectifying if UGH makes it insensitive and objectifying.”

Molloy is right: No one wants to be reduced to a single aspect of their life by a romantic partner or anyone else. But being objectified in short, concentrated bursts by a lover isn’t a problem for most people—quite the opposite, in fact. Being objectified by someone who doesn’t care about the rest of you? Most people don’t find that sexy. Being briefly objectified by someone who loves the particular thing/things you bring to the table/mattress/sling and the rest of you too? Most people find that fucking sexy.

Finally, UGH, while I had Molloy on the line, I asked her to quickly address the issues of trans porn and SRS. “It’s no more wrong to indulge in trans porn than it is to indulge in porn starring or created by cis people,” says Molloy. “Whether UGH’s favorite transporn outlets are stories, pictures or drawings—or if they’re videos of mainstream trans porn stars like Bailey Jay or independent queer-feminist performers like Chelsea Poe—UGH shouldn’t feel ashamed.

As to whether his girlfriend gets SRS, that’s something that has to be up to her. Quiet resentment, guilt and pressure to have or not have surgery

should serve as signs that maybe this relationship doesn’t have much of a future. I suggest that the two of them sit down and have a long talk about genitals, preferences and deal breakers.”

If a woman writes in her Craigslist hookup ad that she is a “bigger beautiful woman,” is there a polite way to press her for more specific details? How can I determine what she means by that? Or is it always inherently rude to ask a selfproclaimed BBW just how much she weighs and how big she actually is—to determine if one will be attracted to her?

Befuddled Baffled Wonderer If we were talking about personal ads on sites where people look for relationships—Match.com, OkCupid, Gun Lovers Passions, etc.—it would indeed be rude to ask someone precisely how big she is. In that case, I would suggest going on a low-stakes, noexpectations date instead and having a look/actual human interaction. But we’re not talking about a dating website, BBW we’re talking NSA hookup ads on Craigslist. We’re talking about a virtual meat market. And when you’re in a meat market—literally or figuratively, physically or virtually—there’s nothing wrong with asking a polite, direct question about the meat on offer.

I am a bi man married to a straight woman. We are in a wonderful GGG relationship. On a pretty regular basis, we invite others into the bedroom for fun. We have one friend who we do this with weekly. Because he is here so often, a bit of his clothing and a few other essentials are stored in our guest room. My snooping mother-in-law found a drawer with boxers that were obviously not my size, lube and a butt plug. I want to tell her the truth, but my wife does not. MIL is religious/conservative, and she may disown my wife if she finds out our marriage is often a threesome. What’s the right thing to do here?

Not In The Closet You should tell your MIL to shove her fucking money—the inheritance your wife might lose if her mother were to disown her—up her religious/ conservative ass. (I can only assume the stress about being disowned involves an inheritance, aka big money; otherwise, there is no downside to being disowned by this bitch.) But if your wife places a higher value on her mom’s money than she does on her own independence and your shared right to marital privacy, NITC, then she should tell her mother that the plug and the gay porn are hers. (Shrug off the ambiguous text messages.) Lots of straight married women with 100 percent straight husbands enjoy gay porn. I guess it boils down to which will be the greater torment for your MIL (and therefore likelier grounds for disinheritance): the whole truth (her daughter and bisexual SIL are sinful, nonmonogamous pervs) or the face-saving lie (her daughter being a bit of a perv). 
