I have been an ice-cream lover for decades but the two ads for Little Baby’s Ice Cream have creeped me out. I’m curious, however, as to how they came up with the Little Baby’s name. Is the “little baby” their ice cream business venture? Or is there some other “little baby” to which the name refers? It’s not important.

Rocky Road Regarding Tara Murtha’s column about a couple who had to move out of South Philly due to a creepy neighbor—who has since been charged with murder: Yes, that stretch between Tasker and Morris on Seventh Street is quite unsavory ... I wish the police would do weekly sweeps and clear the degenerates from that areas. ore than 100 people stand in one of two lines across the street from Family Court at 19th and Vine streets. Most of them are homeless. Some of them are there to receive a free meal from the few volunteers set up near the courthouse. On the other side of the lawn, toward the Ben Franklin Parkway, there’s a group congregated around a man wearing a red Philadelphia Kixx T-shirt, holding a clipboard. He’s Adam Bruckner, and he’s been coming here with the goal of getting the homeless IDs for the past 10 years.

“Years ago, I used to ask homeless guys, ‘Why don’t you get a job?’” says Bruckner, after he signs a $13.50 check and hands it to a tall, bearded man who just proved his identity by showing two prescription drug bottles bearing his name. “And they said, ‘It’s because we can’t get IDs.’” So Bruckner, 37, decided to help.

When he started out, he was just a young guy with a clipboard who gave money out of his own pocket. But within weeks, he said, word spread that there was someone in Philadelphia looking to get poor and homeless people identification so they could get jobs, cash checks and vote.

Hundreds of people began coming to him every Monday at the Vine Street location. Today, the Parkway meet-up is a charitable nonprofit called Philly Restart operating with $60,000—most of which is spent in the form of checks written for $13.50, the amount required to get a state ID from PennDOT. “Now, many of the shelters and halfway houses in the city will refer their clients straight here,” he says, adding that he sees hundreds of people each week, and there is no universal story of the types of people who need IDs. With all the talk about the working poor and elderly being denied access to the polls due to the new voter-ID law, the homeless have been almost universally ignored in the debate. When Philadelphia Weekly first reported on this issue in June 2011, we noted that Project H.O.M.E. objected to the bill, saying it put up major roadblocks for those who were rebuilding their lives and had the eventual goal of obtaining an

ID. Since then, of course, the law has passed, and the debate over its necessity, its usefulness and its legality is stronger than ever.

Bruckner notes how excited he was when he first heard about the bill. “I thought maybe that would help take care of some things,” he says, “but it’s made things more complicated … it seems like there’s this big miscommunication about who could get [identification] and when they could get it … it hasn’t dropped my numbers at all.”

And he has no way of knowing how many people he’s seen have, or even need ID. Usually, he says he recognizes only a couple faces in the

“Either [the people here] never had [identification], or they’re in a high-risk situation where they live in a shelter and you go to the bathroom and your stuff gets stolen.

Or you’re in jail and [they lose their things upon getting released],” Bruckner says, adding that, for the homeless population, holding on to IDs—expired or nonexpired—can be very difficult. And Pennsylvania law does not allow people to acquire a new copy of their previously issued ID unless they have documentation backing up who they are—and many who lose their ID or have had it

That’s totally erroneous.” crowd, and only knows one person, Tyson (the first homeless man he helped), by name. The rest, he says, are first-timers.

One man, wearing a white undershirt and white sneakers, says Bruckner has already helped him get a birth certificate, but isn’t sure about his next step. “I was locked up [in prison] for five years,” says the man, who did not give his name. “[And when I got out], they don’t tell you that you need a new ID when you get out … the jail is overcrowded and basically they got nowhere to put people, it’s bullshit.” He says he needs an ID for “a job, voting, all that.”

Another man, skinny, bearded and with acne scars dotting his face, says he doesn’t have a referral letter because he can’t get into the methadone clinic at 8th Street and Girard Avenue. He gives Bruckner a pill bottle to prove his name; Bruckner

stolen can’t.

“We think because there are 250 people sleeping on the streets of Philadelphia, then there are 250 homeless people living in Philadelphia,” Bruckner says. “That’s totally erroneous. If you consider the shelters, the numbers in rehab, halfway houses, the number goes into the thousands really easily,” he says. “If the problem were as easy as 250 people on the Parkway, you could open a 300-bed place and end homelessness. That’s not the way it is.

So it’s the same thing with the ID. It’s not like you can get these 250 people an ID and say everyone has an ID. It’s literally thousands and thousands of people every year.” n

utting-edge is a word I like to make fun of,” Angela Jerardi admits over a beer at Dock Street. The erstwhile organizer of the nonprofit gallery FLUXspace, she’s trying to characterize the kind of art they were known for presenting. “We liked to joke that we were more on the ‘bleeding’ edge,” she says, “because we were the furthest out in terms of the distance you might

be willing to travel to see art in Philly.”

She’s not kidding. Located north of Lehigh Avenue in East Kensington, FLUXspace had enough spit, grit and vision to put on some of the sharpest shows in Philadelphia—like German artist Oliver Herring’s gigantic, participatory “TASK” parties, for instance, where audience members drew instructions out of a hat in order to assemble a sprawling art installation.

But FLUXspace closed its doors last September. And an alarming number of other small art spaces have followed suit.

The subsequent closures of Possible Projects, Extra Extra and Jolie Laide have cast a long shadow, raising questions about what makes Philly simultaneously such a great and such an infuriating city in which to run an art space. Because, sure, the art scene is a revolving door, but it doesn’t always swing this fast.

What’s behind the recent wave of closures— and why are some spaces opting to turn away from the nonprofit model entirely?

“You start off with a lot of energy and motivation,” says Rachel Reese. “Then, you either can’t afford it anymore or you feel like you’re running your wheels for nothing.”

Until two months ago, Reese and her fellow-artist husband Trevor were co-directors of the Kensington gallery Possible Projects, which they’d opened in 2009. The duo turned the tiny storefront space to their advantage; their carefully conceived exhibitions often featured only one or two pieces of art, providing a focused viewing arena with a heavy curatorial hand. When they opted in May to move back to Atlanta to raise their new son, Philly lost a creative couple whose carefully conceived exhibitions and artist-centered publications put Philadelphia in dialog with other cities.

The Reeses had explored the idea of pursuing 501(c)3 status to make Possible Projects a nonprofit, which would have mitigated the burden of funding the space themselves. But they felt hemmed in by the strictures of the grantmaking guidelines of the Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative (PEI), a program of the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage and Philadelphia’s major arts grantmaker.

Although there is no minimum operating budget required of applicants’ organizations, PEI expects an arts organization to have completed two full years of programming and to have at least one full-time staff member in place in order to be eligible for funding.

That’s tricky for many small arts initiatives.

“Two years is a really hard time period,” Reese says. “That’s like your make-or-break time.

The PEI grant was totally a factor,” she says, in the decision to close Possible Projects.

Jerardi echoes a similar refrain, pointing out how the application requirements for foundations like Pew can actually stifle creativity instead of fostering it: “Organizations that can’t guarantee longevity can’t get funding, even if they never claim to want longevity.” She doesn’t think that an art organization’s worth should be calculated by the number of programming years under its belt.

“I think a lot of projects, including ours, see themselves as an artists’ project, a potentially creative endeavor for the people involved. To see it through is as much about their own creative desires as it is about creating a space for other artists and audiences to attend.”

That’s why closing FLUXspace seemed like a logical next step, she says: “I guess one of the reasons I’m proud and happy that we ended when we did is because I think that you should be able to make changes and be a small, swift moving boat. There’s real value to that, especially within the arts. To the detriment of the current contemporary art field,

staff actively reach out to smaller spaces to inform them about PEI and its resources,” she says, “and will continue to do so as an integral part of our work in the community.”

For nonprofits that have received PEI funding, Marincola’s statement rings true. “I think they’re very supportive of smaller nonprofits,” says David Dempewolf, who runs

that’s not something that is traditionally valued within funding streams.”

Paula Marincola, PEI’s executive director, disagrees, noting that since PEI opened up its grants process to small spaces and independent curators in 2008, PEI has consistently awarded grants to artist-run operations. “Our

They received funding after only two years of programming a roster of emerging artists spiked with internationally recognized names—and although they continue to apply each year, they’ve only struck gold the once. “But they

actually followed up with us afterward about why we didn’t get it [again],” recalls Dempewolf, obviously impressed. “They critiqued our proposal and encouraged us to apply again the next year. In my opinion, they’re really trying to make us a better place—not necessarily a bigger place, but a better place, and I really appreciate that. It’s been really helpful, the door’s always open.”

But just because the door’s open doesn’t mean everyone wants to walk through.

Like Jerardi, the founders of the collectively run West Kensington art space Extra Extra were wary of getting trapped in the granting cycle. “Like a lot of smaller spaces, we didn’t want to be a nonprofit,” observed Derek Frech, who founded the gallery in 2009 with Joe Lacina and Daniel Wallace, fellow Maryland Institute College of Art graduates.

They knew they wanted to avoid what they perceived as the significant administrative burden that accompanies grants in order to focus on the art. But Extra Extra’s decision to forgo 501(c)3 status also had a lot to do with the concept they formulated for the gallery, which included staying nimble and responsive in regard to current trends by leaning heavily on digital art works and using the Internet as a medium. “When we started the project, we kind of knew we’d be running it in a way that wouldn’t be that sustainable,” Frech says. “We figured it would last probably three or four years.” They closed in May, hitting their target date right on the money.

Unlike Extra Extra’s demise, when commercial gallery Jolie Laide closed, it wasn’t exactly planned in advance. The space was well-loved, belonging to that rare breed of commercial galleries in Philadelphia that artists openly admire. It’s spaces like this that counter the commercial drive with a commitment to experimentation. Such a niche is hard to carve out; director Travis Heck often felt that balancing the experimental with the commercial was a precarious act. “That’s something I struggled with. There’s such an anti-establishment scene in Philly,” Heck suggests—meaning that artists here seem quick to embrace rough-and-ready, ragtag projects run by other artists, but approach galleries that are out to make a profit with a healthy dose of skepticism. “But you have to put money into the hands of artists. ” Or at least that was the idea. But Heck says, despite selling what he considered “a fair amount” of work, Jolie Laide didn’t meet its owner’s financial expectations, and the gallery closed in December. “I was pretty burnt out at the end,” Heck admits. He’s since moved to New York to accept a position at Leo Koenig Gallery.

As he sees it, the root of Jolie Laide’s financial hardship stemmed not from a lack of compelling work for sale but, rather, from the general dearth of collectors game to buy emerging artists in Philly. “The problem we

But while the Rebekah Templeton Gallery might not boast a roster of blue-chip collectors, it nevertheless succeeds in something equally, if not more, difficult: getting regular people to buy art. “We thought we’d do something really inexpensive,” explains Will, who asks each exhibiting artist to create an editioned artwork to accompany their exhibition. “We fund editions that are priced at no more than $200—and that’s our attempt to really build collecting in Philadelphia. A lot of them have been purchased by other artists and not by big collectors. And that works in Philadelphia.”

That idea, Rachel Reese says, holds the key to making Philadelphia a more hospitable city for the artistically inclined: more commercial galleries with less conventional strategies.

She points out that the common wisdom of the local art establishment is that there are only three long-term-viable commercial galleries in town—Fleisher Ollman Gallery, Locks Gallery, and Bridgette Mayer Gallery, which have all been delivering their particu-

were facing was trying to get the collector base in Philadelphia to support what we were doing,” he says. “It seemed extremely hard to get a lot of Philly collectors to come in.”

Heck believes that the more established institutions in Philadelphia could have stepped in to make a difference. “In my mind, Philly has such great institutions—and a lot of the supporters at the Institute of Contemporary Art and Philadelphia Museum of Art are the collector base here. I was hoping that these institutions would point collectors toward the galleries, to put money into the city by buying Philadelphia artists.” But Heck never saw these relationships materialize: “There was just really no support from larger institutions to get the collectors to the galleries.”

Ben Will, co-founder and owner of Rebekah Templeton Gallery on West Girard Avenue, agrees that although big-name collectors pop up on Philadelphia board lists, they don’t often invest in Philadelphia talent.

“A lot of the collectors we get are not coming from Philadelphia. We get a lot of inquiries from out of state.” He doesn’t blame Philadelphia’s larger institutions for that disconnect, though. “Sure, I would love to have the board of the PMA over for a gallery tour—but it’s also my job to try to get those people interested.” So far, he admits, he hasn’t had much success. “There are multiple art worlds.

There’s the institutional level and the emerging level, and the people that are on the boards of these institutions are interested in the highest level. What they think of as ‘emerging’ is not what I think of as ‘emerging.’” Translation: You could score an original

Those places get sleepy and caught up in making a profit and keeping their space open. But I hope something comes up and challenges those spaces.”

For the Rebekah Templeton Gallery, the strategy of appealing to a self-selecting audience of artists and art lovers is working out well: “I feel very positive about our space,” says Will. “We’re taking a long approach to it, hoping to build something that can be sustainable. We’ve developed a good following, and we’re getting to the point where we can represent artists.”

Jerardi, on the other hand, sees the dismal count of successful commercial galleries in Philadelphia as an opportunity to capitalize on other kinds of spaces. “Philly struggles

with a commercial gallery scene,” she says, “so it’s surprising to me that there aren’t more spaces that are really doing conceptual, alternative projects rather than trying to create a small white box.” After all, one of Philly’s greatest assets is its relatively cheap and voluminous space for rent. FLUXspace had a 30,000-square-foot mill; Extra Extra had a house and a gallery for less than what it might cost to rent an apartment in New York; Possible Projects benefitted from a similar deal. “I found it to be an amazing gift that this city offered,” Jerardi, says; she hopes to see other art initiatives take advantage of Philly’s affordable and unconventional spaces.

So—how to start an art space, who to involve, and when to decide that it’s run its course? You might be lucky enough to have some expendable income, a group of friends with a common vision, or a connection to

someone in real estate who can hook you up with an exceptionally rad space—but whatever the strategy, Reese offers this advice: “Just do it. And be realistic with your expectations.”

Jerardi agrees. “There’s the possibility to do great things in Philadelphia. Just don’t beat yourself up if it isn’t everything you dreamed it would be. In many ways, Philly can be a difficult place to keep something like that going.”

With FLUXspace, Extra Extra and Possible Projects challenging the notion that success must be tied to longevity, “keeping something going” year after year may not necessarily be the goal of experimental art projects anyway. And even if it is, you’ll be in good company. “We’re staying here,” insists Dempewolf, of Marginal Utility. “We have no intention of closing down.” n

Much Ado About Nothing

or centuries, gay and lesbian theatergoers have stretched their imagination in an attempt to draw parallels between their own lives and those of the heterosexual characters that populate the plays of William Shakespeare. Now, Mauckingbird Theatre Company puts a queer spin on the Bard with their new production of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Mauckingbird’s version retains Shakespeare’s original plot of romantic entanglements and mistaken identity, but alters the gender of some of the play’s key characters: The famous bickering duo Benedick and Beatrice are now depicted as a same-sex couple; Beatrice is a man, as is Hero (the terrific young actor Griffin Back, in his first adult role), whose blossoming romance with the handsome Claudio is threatened by the scheming Don John. Better Than Ezra This New Orleans-based trio has been around for so long, their first recording came out on cassette. Though the group has been making music under the same name for more than 20 years, they’ve had as many line-up changes as Destiny’s Child: one original member left, then sued his former bandmates; one tragically committed suicide; and the other rejoined Sugarland, the platinum-selling country duo he started out with.

Over those two-plus decades, Better Than Ezra has released seven acclaimed alt-rock albums, including 1993’s stellar “Deluxe,” which went platinum. In a recession-shocked, post-Occupy climate, songs about the importance of owning currency (think 50 Cent’s “I Get Money” or Donna Summer’s “She Works Hard for the Money”) carry even more cultural resonance and relevance than years past. Aloe Blacc’s “I Need a Dollar” is another entry into this field, what with its pleading refrain (“I need a dollar, dollar/A dollar is what I need”), heartstrings-strumming ’70s soul aesthetics and inspiration having come from a chain-gang song. In Southeast Asian culture, a water festival is a holiday that honors the water gods for irrigating the rice fields and for their life-giving forces. A total of 20 teams will compete this year (in community and corporate divisions), soaring down the Delaware River in some of the most spectacular boats you’ve ever seen. Meanwhile, the RiverStage will come alive with Southeast Asian-inspired entertainment, including a performance by the local Cambodian rap group Azi Fellas, and a performance of Neary Chea Chour, a classical dance that describes the beauty of Cambodian women and their elegant costumes. A Very Fine House Its name may not be memorable, but the food at Vietnam House certainly is.

s if it weren’t confusing enough to specify which Chinatown Vietnamese restaurant you’re talking about in conversation—Vietnam? Vietnam Palace, right across the street?—we can now add Vietnam House to the ranks. It opened back in May on the corner of Ninth and Race streets, and though it doesn’t yet have the passionate partisan followers of the other two, it is nonetheless turning out some very good, exceptionally affordable food.

And it’s doing so in a humble space that feels at once welcoming and relaxed. Vietnam House is tidy and linear, with cheery blue and yellow tiles on the wall and a staff as friendly and accommodating as any in the neighborhood.

Much of the menu hews to the familiar, to the tried and true. This isn’t a bad thing by any stretch: Classic, standard dishes here are lovingly prepared, with enough attention to detail and small twists to set them apart and make you reconsider them.Broken rice with BBQ chicken arrives looking like the same sort of platter you’ve seen a thousand times before: sliced tomato, cucumbers, broken noodles.

But the chicken—charred outside yet still moist inside, all of it permeated by the smoke of the open-flame grill and the perfume of lemongrass— possesses a depth that this dish all too rarely does. It’s not drowned in sauce or cloyingly sweet; rather, it’s a wellcooked bird, pure and simple, and all the better for it.

The house special rice vermicelli is neatly portioned according to component, and while each bit certainly benefits from a quick trip through the sweet-tangy sauce on the side, none of them really requires it. Generous slices of beef sing with lemongrass, lending each bite an unexpected, aromatic quality, beautiful against the mineral chew of the beef itself.

House-made spring rolls (made daily), cut into tight little bite-sized cylinders, were shatteringly crisp, filled with a grind of pork, shrimp and onions. Only the shrimp were a letdown—a bit too diminutive alongside the other items, and just hinting at mealiness.

swirls of tomato red pooling in the spaces between noodles and hunks of tofu. Generous icebergs of ground pork-shrimp balls peeked up through the surface, the red tide encircling each. A slurp of noodles revealed the subtle funky hum of shrimp sauce in the background. For $6.25, this is a layered, rewarding bowlful—easily enough for two, though you may want to keep it for yourself.

Then there are the rice cakes: rectangular batons of steamed-thenseared rice flour whose surfaces have been stir-fried to a crisp. They’re joined by an egg that’s warmed by the heat of those cakes, and by the time you’re done drizzling on the sriracha and the sweet-sour soy sauce, the egg has cooked. It’s subtle at first, but then it dawns on you that there’s more going on here than you initially assumed: Nutty flavors turn tangy; the savoriness of the egg veers in the direction of sweet. For a modest

$4.50, this is a dish that over-delivers with every bite and continues to improve as the flavors have a chance to get absorbed.

Wash it all down with a fruit milkshake—the mango was notable for its modestly restrained sweetness—or, if you feel like never sleeping again, the jitter-inducing iced coffee with condensed milk, an unabashedly bitter brew balanced out with the tongue-coating sugariness of the milk. The addition of crushed ice, about three minutes after it arrives, mellows it all out enough to really come together.

That all of this is served in such a pleasant, welcoming atmosphere, and at prices this refreshingly low—a recent dinner for two with way too much food ran to $30 before tip—is a bonus. Vietnam House may not have the same caché as its quasieponymous competition, but I have a feeling that it will in short order. n

El Loco Pez seems to be a nice middle ground where all people can feel comfortable. It’s a bar with a sense of inclusion, humor—and damn good tacos and drinks.

Carne asada is the most familiar, the short ribs tender and deeply seasoned with cumin, as well as Worcestershire and soy. Taco al pastor is nearly halfway between dinner and dessert; the distinct whiff of cinnamon and clove in the tender chunks of pork combine with the pineapple in ways that are distinctly reminiscent of an old-school pineapple upside-down cake. Order two of these. The menu encourages overconsumption. On the drink tip: The margarita at El Loco Pez is a balanced gem, neither teethsuckingly tart nor cavity-causing sweet. For something more adventurous, check out the Monte Carlo, whose sweetly perfumed hibiscus water is balanced out by an in-house infusion of tequila and chipotle. (B.F.)

Eating here is a two-faced experience, both forward-looking and retro, a throwback to a time when comfort trumped detail, but of-the-moment in its occasional willingness to leap-frog convention and play in the sandbox of more modern flavor combinations. How else to explain the Frosted Flake-crusted and fried PB and J? It’s with the simpler constructs that ASB is at its most charming. Grilled cheese embodies the holy trinity of sensations for this Norman Rockwell construct. The bread comes perfectly crisped up in copious amounts of butter, the cheese tucked inside stretches from the teeth with each bite as if performing for a commercial, and the tomatoes, even out of season, bring enough acid to balance out the fattiness. This ambitious restaurant in the former Ansill space in Queen Village is well on its way to becoming one of the city’s most interesting, rewarding destinations. The skate arrived curled up like some sort of loose nautilus shell, its butter-browned flank a visual reference to the addictive whole-grain mustard crisps off to the side. A massive portion of thick, subtly gamy duck magret, the center glistening like a ruby, finds its counterpart in a silky puree of smoked butternut squash. Cichonski’s banh cam— the beloved glutinous rice and mung bean spheres of Vietnam—are made his own with the addition of truffle and rosemary for aromatics, white beans instead of mung, and mashed potato flakes for texture. The result is reminiscent of an oversized, gnocchi-like orb encased in a lace-thin carapace, a fresh, successfully idiosyncratic homage. (B.F.)

The names of Hop Sing Laundromat’s signature cocktails pay homage, in one way or another, to America. The “Montana Payback” is named after the Battle of Little Bighorn. “A Failed Entertainment” was the working title of Infinite Jest. “Nevermore” is in honor of Edgar Allan Poe. The new craft-cocktail bar’s owner, Lêe, spent months driving around the U.S., exploring its various food and drink cultures; aside from clever drink names, the experience left him resolved to build a place whose bartenders would serve high-quality well liquors without snooty pretension. For all its colorful quirk, Hop Sing pulls it off brilliantly. (B.F.)

At Tapestry, you really can’t go wrong with a brew and almost anything fried. Order a Ballast Point Piper Down Scottish-style ale from California, and tear into a plate of fried chicken, a salty, dizzyingly crispy, thickcrusted plateful that’s among the better versions in the city right now. The vegetarian chili is also a standout: The pinto, cannellini, red kidney and black beans are all relatively toothsome despite the fact that they’re canned, and the sweetness of paprika and cooked-down tomatoes lend it contrast. The burger, though nothing unique, nonetheless acquitted itself admirably; the 80-20 chuck is ground fresh at Rivera’s and Nydick’s Agiato in Manayunk. Pizzas are generally a solid go-to as well, with their leopardspotted and yeasty crusts. Check out the new brews, and dive into that fried chicken.

This is a kitchen that finds its inspiration in Italian and Mediterranean classics, and then proceeds to tweak or chef-ify them into something both more modern and more comforting. Fried polenta is perfect for a blustery winter’s night, each fluffy-centered cornmeal and semolina baton encased in a perfectly golden crust and complicated by both fontina and parmigiano reggiano, as well as an anchovy-spiked salsa rosa.

Tagliatelle is also masterfully crafted, each silky ribbon just rough-sided enough to hold onto a perfect amount of accompanying rosemary-scented pork-leg ragu, all succulent and dense-flavored. Rosemary cake with a lemon-zipped ricotta marching across the plate justified bringing a bottle of good Moscato d’Asti to pop alongside. It’s a friendly, successful BYOB that neighbors can call their own. (B.F.)

Grilled gochujang tofu boasts three (three!) separate rounds of marinating and arrives in a shallow pool of smoked miso dashi, crowned by a translucent lace of yuba “cracklin” and accompanied by an edamame puree: soy beans four ways, each of them remarkable. Roasted golden beats are layered on pumpernickel with smoked tofu, avocado, capers and a cucumber dill sauce to perfectly embody the satisfying richness of a smoked salmon sandwich. (B.F.) n

Pork liver terrine is a chunky, funky wonder, the gaminess of the organ both unabashed and primal in the best sense.

Bone marrow and truffle sausage is the kind of dish that would give any self-respecting doctor nightmares. Follow the same logic as the rest of the meal: Small portions and big flavors are the focal points. Don’t fight the temptation. Stateside seems custom-made

Crinkle-cut fries are crisp and 14-carat golden, with or without their signature cheddar-American blend cheese sauce—a treat that makes our hometown cheese, Whiz, look like the processed, unnatural mess that it is. Catch the masterful mix of collectives that gives First Among Equals its resonance.

ringing together eight core artists and curatorial collectives from Philadelphia and Los Angeles, First Among Equals proposes a variety of strategies for working collaboratively across peer groups and generations. But it’s not all as rosy as it sounds. Amid the resultant joint efforts and seamless assemblages, curators Alex Klein and Kate Kraczon have allowed contention, resistance and even some cold-blooded killing to infiltrate this multivalent exhibition.

Both Da Corte’s “Scene Take Six” (2012) and Tannatt’s “Studio Complex/Beardsley Farm/Heaven’s Gate” (2012) are built around collective values: collaboration, consensus and communication. Each artist worked with a variety of other artists whose contributions to the exhibition were incorporated into unified, sculptural

installations. It’s a method that results in some of the most visually intriguing and conceptually cohesive work in the show.

But First Among Equals is as much an exhibition about artists working against each other as it is a study of how they work together. Kathryn Andrews’s “Serial Killer” (2012) takes the form of a chain-link fence on wheels—occasionally accompanied by living statues—that encroaches upon other artworks, ostensibly murdering them with its relentless and uninvited proximity.

“Serial Killer” hit indiscriminately throughout the course of the exhibition, preying on five different artworks and even significantly enhancing a few; when it rolled up to Bodega’s wall-mounted display of xeroxes, “Serial Killer” lent the otherwise lank paper a structural frisson by extending its monochrome pallet into the viewer’s space. faith in the power of the poster.

Borne out over an unusually large number of printed contributions is a belief in the poster’s ability to advertise, mediate and stand alone as an object of aesthetic interest. This works more or less effectively, as long as you pay close attention, keep track of event dates and don’t mind the fact that nearly half of what you see in the gallery is actually a placeholder for something else.

There’s a poster for Wu Tsang’s film, Wildness (2012), eight posters by P&Co. for their sound project of remixed audio recordings, a wall of posters designed by Bodega to evoke their performance program and a series of posters by Emilio Macchia and Luisa Lorenza Corna for Machete Group’s ongoing discussion series.

In all cases, the posters—as posters do— gesture away from the here and now of the gallery space toward time-based events accessible from different platforms. Thus, the viewer is referred to a performance commissioned by Bodega or to the ICA’s website, where you can listen to P&Co.’s digital recordings. It leaves the viewer feeling alternately lucky when they catch a great event (Wu’s Wildness screening was excellent, coming hot on the heels of the film’s celebrated premiere in L.A.) and wistful when they realize they’ve missed half of the programming (for example, Machete’s symposia ended in May). It’s a risky approach to exhibition-making that demands curatorial stamina and presumes viewer tenacity.

But Klein and Kraczon have kept up the tempo, and there’s still plenty to see and hear in the last days of the exhibition’s run. For her solo show in Marginal Utility’s constantly changing gallery-withina-gallery, Abigail DeVille has shoved the black gallery walls flush to the white walls of the ICA in order to make room for “Hooverville Torqued Ellipse” (2012). Her giant cardboard barge borrows its shape from minimalist sculptor Richard Serra’s iconic steel forms, but is constructed entirely from recycled materials. Its intense physicality offers a nice foil to the digital sculptures in Extra Extra’s interactive virtual gallery, projected on the opposite side of the wall. This constellation stages a plausible parable for the exhibition as a whole: Like physicality and virtuality, First Among Equals suggests that collaboration and contention may be two sides of the same, oft-flipped coin. n Through Aug. 12. ummer theater in the Philadelphia area is typically dominated by William Shakespeare’s works, and this season, plays by the Bard have been featured on stages from Quakertown to Wilmington, Del. Particularly welcome have been the frequent free productions, including Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre’s fascinating staging of Cymbeline.

Under the direction of one of the city’s best freelance directors, David O’Connor, who first gained notoriety for his masterful staging of Master Harold ... and the Boys at Lantern Theater Company, Cymbeline is performed by the members of PST’s Classical Acting Academy. Now in its fourth year, the Academy is an eightweek program that immerses the students in classical acting techniques, taught by some of the area’s top professional theater artists, then is capped off with a staging of a Shakespeare play, productions that have been surprisingly well performed.

Cymbeline, often considered one of Shakespeare’s most challenging offerings, is no exception.

The play’s complicated story begins with a rather unseemly wager between Posthumus, portrayed by the steady Brooks Russell, and the Roman Iachimo, given voice by the versatile Kevin Rodden. Posthumus has been banished from Britain for marrying Imogen (the excellent Marisa Lerman) against the wishes of her father King Cymbeline (an able Sam Sherburne) and his deceitful queen (played with a delicious unscrupulousness by Hannah Van Scivers), who planned to solidify her position

Posthumus brags to Iachimo that his wife is “more fair, virtuous, wise, chaste, constant-qualified and less attemptable” than any other woman. The slippery Iachimo bets Posthumus a hefty $10,000 ducats that he can bed Imogen. As if his wife was a piece of property, Posthumus agrees to the wager, and, to make matters worse, he bets with a diamond ring given to him

by Imogen as a symbol of her devotion.

Although Iachimo is ultimately rejected

by Imogen, he steals a bracelet from the young bride and convinces Posthumus that his wife has been unfaithful. Enraged, Posthumus orders his servant to kill her, a decision that forces the princess to flee the castle disguised as a man.

What follows is a wild tale of mistaken identity, betrayed loyalties and other surprises, but Posthumus’ behavior is its most disturbing element. He declares his love for Imogen, but he orders her death with surprising quickness. Instead of the heroic male at the center of most romances, in Cymbeline, it is the courageous Imogen who is smart, strong and merciful.

Even before Cymbeline begins, O’Conner’s production works to draw the audience into the play’s world by having the actors (as themselves) mingle with the theater-goers.

When it begins, the houselights remain on, and while this tactic to erase the natural divide between audience and actor is strategically sound, it is also a bit distracting. Fortunately, after a few minutes, the houselights are dimmed, and, with that connection securely established, Cymbeline begins in earnest.

The spare staging —the set’s only decoration is a large trunk that figures prominently in a key scene and from which the actors extract various props and figures— puts the focus squarely on the actors, and while a few occasionally struggle with the

Six Pack Six Uncharacteristic Early Works from Great Filmmakers

By Matt Prigge mprigge@philadelphiaweekly.com Howard Hawks, Road to Glory (1926): The great filmmakers of early, Golden Age Hollywood tended not to be artists. They were professionals. Directing was a job, and they went where the work was.

Frank Capra and George Stevens labored for Hal Roach, and even gruff John Ford helmed comedies and Shirley Temple vehicles. Hawks’ debut, sadly lost, is a melodrama about a woman going blind, buttressed by reams of religious imagery. “It didn’t have any fun in it,” he later confessed, which is indeed un-Hawksian.

Mikio Naruse, Flunky, Hard Work (1931): Akira Kurosawa described the melodramas of this Japanese great, many of them, “women’s pictures,” as “like a great river with a calm surface and a raging current in its depths.” But like Yasujiro Ozu—whose debut, Blade of Penitance, concerned a thief trying to go straight—Naruse’s style didn’t appear fully formed.

Indeed, his first extant work is part-slapstick, which is even funnier if you’ve seen serene masterworks like Repast or When a Woman Ascends the Stairs.

Robert Altman, The Delinquents (1957): Altman said his biggest influences weren’t great filmmakers but bad filmmakers, who helped him conceive his unique approach by teaching him what not to do.

He also learned this the hard way, spending two decades pre-breakthrough on industrial films, TV and this low-budget juvie effort, which, beyond being decidedly un-Altmanesque, also featured Billy Jack himself, Tom Laughlin.

rest of the picture had even aspired to work on this level, we really might have had something.

Alas, remember we are talking about a Will Ferrell film. A gifted performer in small doses, Ferrell still has a difficult time committing to a character for the entire length of a movie. He suffers from an improv comedian’s insecurity, skittishly filling every silence with absurd non sequiturs that, more often than not, derail whatever it was the scene was supposed to be about in the first place.

And man, Galifianakis wore out his welcome in record time, didn’t he?

He’s starting to make me nostalgic for Jack Black.

The Campaign quickly degenerates into a pissing contest between the two candidates, losing sight of anything the movie might have originally had to say about its subject in favor of increasingly nonsensical one-upsmanship maneuvers. By the time Ferrell films himself having kinky sex in the kitchen with Galifianakis’ portly wife and releases the footage as a campaign ad, this movie has jumped completely off the rails.

The Campaign Grade: C Director: Jay Roach Starring: Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis for public office. But remember that Roach is also responsible for the Austin Powers and Fockers franchises. In other words, he keeps beating dead horses even after they’ve been turned into glue.

Shot on ugly video with Roach’s usual preponderance of unflattering close-ups, The Campaign suffers from the visual indifference that plagues most modern comedies, as well as a leniency that lets you know the stars are the ones calling the shots. The movie is less than an hour and a half, but feels much longer.

Roach can’t even manage a terrific gag about voting machines, burying it beneath a mawkish third act in which we are suddenly supposed to care about these nincompoops. The sudden outbreak of gooey idealism doesn’t mesh at all with The Campaign’s initially interesting cynicism regarding the political process.

Taken down 10 notches, The Campaign might have been something. n

hat passes for political discourse in America has become so egregiously stupid as of late that it is probably now impossible to satirize.

That may be why The Campaign doesn’t really bother. It’s the most infuriating kind of comedy, one that keeps flirting with sharp ideas, only to retreat into barn-door-broad buffoonery.

Will Ferrell stars as North Carolina Congressman Cam Brady, yet another one of the comic’s dim-bulb, over-entitled white guys who can’t see beyond his own boorishness. A good ol’ boy horndog constantly plagued by sex scandals and foot-in-mouth syndrome, he’s had a fine time of things, running unopposed for four terms in his backwater district.

Alas, Brady’s latest phone-sex faux pas has earned him the ire of the Motch Brothers, two billionaire industrialists who, in a nice touch, constantly refer to themselves as “job creators.” Played by Dan Aykroyd and John Lithgow in a screamingly selfconscious homage to Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche in Trading Places, the dastardly brothers are aiming to sell Brady’s district to China, and feel like they need a fresh candidate to push through the necessary deregulations.

Enter Zach Galifianakis’ Marty Huggins, the preening oddball son of the Motch’s longtime crony (Brian Cox, the one person in this film who gets that understatement can be funny.) Marty’s a hopeless square with a fat family and some seriously swishy affectations.

He’s a challenge for Dylan McDermott’s tireless campaign consultant, charged with giving this nebbish a macho makeover. The loneliest smart conceit in Shawn Harwell’s and Chris Henchy’s screenplay is that it doesn’t matter what a candidate says on the stump, just so long as he mentions Jesus, guns and the troops enough times.

Indeed, The Campaign’s one genuinely funny scene is Brady and Huggins’ first debate, during which neither gentleman says anything remotely of substance, yet both still whip the crowd into a frenzy with empty proclamations and meaningless slogans. If only the

Gina Gershon’s Private Parts The fearless actress talks filmmakers, ratings and that killer scene in Killer Joe.

o stranger to controversy, Gina Gershon is at it again with Killer Joe, director William Friedkin’s ardently NC-17 adaptation of Tracy Letts’ 1993 play. This fiendishly funny, Texas-fried grindhouse noir is an outrageous provocation—and Gershon, as Sharla, Thomas Haden Church’s rotten-as-he-is wife, sets the stage with a boldly bottomless, ill-groomed introduction during the opening moments. The star of stage, screen and Showgirls shared details with PW last week. And that the wig she’s talking about was not worn on her head.

Um, so you make quite an entrance in this picture.

Right? First of all, I love it because I think it sets the tone. It says who she is, who these people are. Listen, if I was playing Don King, I’d have to wear a wig. You’ve gotta wear the proper wig for the role. And that was Sharla’s look.

PHILADELPHIA

I hear there was an extensive selection process for the wig?

Friedkin, for some reason, is like: ‘Why are you talking about this so much?’ Because people ask me! But we’re not supposed to talk about it anymore. Billy teases me too much. He’s such a great director, and he’s fearless. Sometimes you have to worry about the envelope. There’s no envelope with him. You can’t go too far, as long as you’re being truthful. These characters are out there. My character especially. She’s so feral. She reminds me of this wild animal. So you have to be spontaneous. Most of these scenes we did in one take. You’re in the moment. Billy wants spontaneity. He doesn’t want perfection, as he says.

You’ve worked with some audacious filmmakers. Paul Verhoven, Robert Altman, Michael Mann, now Friedkin. Who would you say pushed you the furthest?

It’s hard to say. I think Killer Joe is the most intense material I have ever dealt with. But was I pushed that far? I kinda chose to go there.

Yet, you originally turned down the role of Sharla onstage?

I was approached years ago, and they asked me to consider it. But then I got to that ending and thought, I don’t want to go there eight times a week. As I’m sure you can understand.

So you went and did something easier, like Cabaret?

That was pretty draining also, but at least I got to sing and dance.

Was it a drag going through the whole NC-17 flap with the ratings board again?

On one hand, I think the ratings system in America is ridiculous. It’s so arbitrary when you see what’s an NC-17, what’s an R and what’s

New Releases Killer Joe Grade: B Review by Matt Prigge After a severely screwy career, French Connection and Exorcist director William Friedkin has earned a late-career renaissance by hooking up with Pulitzer-fêted playwright Tracy Letts. That he’s done this by tackling Letts’ early, questionable work makes the achievement all the more impressive. Early Friedkin includes muscular theatrical adaptations (Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party, Mart Crowely’s The Boys in the Band), and he’s worked similar visceral wonders on Letts’ Bug and now Killer Joe, a redneck burlesque that often feels like it could have been mounted on The Jerry Springer Show.

Double Indemnity as misappropriated by warm beer- and monster truck-obsessed yokels, Letts’ first produced work finds fuckup Texan trailer-trash scion Chris (Emile Hirsch) in deep to a local kingpin, hiring detective-cum-assassin Joe (Matthew McConaughey) to off his mother for the insurance payout. When neither he nor his lunkheaded pop (Thomas Haden Church) can pay Joe’s upfront fee, Joe suggests “using” Chris’ obscurely traumatized sister Dottie (Juno Temple) as retainer, a pact that would be sketchy enough without Chris’ vague incestuous bent.

The majority of Killer Joe’s press has understandably gravitated toward Matthew McConaughey—in the midst of the comeback tour that began with Bernie and Magic Mike—and the various trashy transgressions committed by and against Gina Gershon, who plays Chris’ twotiming stepmother. McConaughey is as great as

you’ve heard: sinister, coiled, instantly washing away a career till now wasted on Kate Hudson and ilk. Gershon, meanwhile, is introduced bushfirst, a succinct summary of the kind of material into which the audience will sink.

That still in no way prepares you for the genuinely shocking act she will eventually perform on a piece of KFC, a dubious attention-grab designed to make the film “talked about.” It succeeds in that respect, though few are gabbing about Letts’ mangled plotting or his questionable point (rednecks are stupid, more or less). Still, execution can trump material, and Killer Joe boasts Friedkin’s exacting direction—including amusingly incongruous use of Clarence Carter’s “Strokin’”— and a cast almost as strong as McConaughey.

Voters at year’s end ought not to forget Church’s inspired interpretation of patchy facial haired idiocy and Marc Macauley’s disarming good ol’ boy drug kingpin, who will slap your back before threatening to bury you in electrical wire. n

Hope Springs a PG. That being said, I think out of all the movies I’ve done that have either been NC-17 or toyed with it, this is a hardcore movie. You should know what you’re going into.

It’s interesting how the film polarizes audiences. Have you watched it with a crowd yet? You can hear half the people cringing, while the rest of us sickos are laughing uncontrollably.

I think it’s hysterical! It’s a black, black, superdark, dark comedy. I think going back to the first scene, my introduction really sets the tone.

You laugh because it’s outrageous. It always takes me a couple of times to really see stuff, but by the third time, I was laughing a lot. I was also amazed, as I am with Billy’s other films. I started seeing all sorts of symbolism, and he uses sound in such a psychological way.

I noticed all these little things here and there I had never noticed on set, which is exciting.

When you watch his movies, they’re so layered, you can watch them again and again and see something new.

Do you think Killer Joe will become so notorious that people might finally stop badgering you about Showgirls?

I really hope so! That was one of the reasons I did it. Just kidding—but it should be. I mean, I’d rather know about this movie than Showgirls if I were a person asking. Of course, now, instead of Showgirls, it will just be people asking about the chicken scene. ‘Do you still eat fried chicken?’ Yes, I love fried chicken. Next question! n

Grade: C Review by Matt Prigge In Hope Springs, Tommy Lee Jones plays an AARP-aged workaholic who reluctantly agrees to marriage counseling with his long-suffering wife (Meryl Streep). As he fidgets and grumbles and resists the vanilla overtures of their cotton tie-wearing pop psych therapist (Steve Carell, not allowed to be funny), it’s not difficult to see Jones, in a sense, not acting. Here’s a simple analogy for Hope Springs: Jones’ character is to marriage-counseling as Jones is to a marriage counseling movie. Coaxing an intransigent jowel monster into a feel-good weepie is actually not a terrible joke, even if what the filmmakers do to him technically counts as Guantanamo-grade torture.

Watching Jones genuinely squirm through The Newlywed Game -level inquiries into his (non)sex life and cuddling prowess, alas, is the only real, unique joy to be derived from the latest from David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada), which essentially plays as a tutorial video for aging marrieds that just happens to star two Oscar winners. The surreally overqualified cast tick off the therapy checklist as they proceed from separate rooms, awkward sit-down dinners and golf show-induced narcolepsy towards candle-lit dinners and Al Green-backed makeout sessions. For what it’s worth, the geriatric sex may be played for yuks, but at least it happens: Streep even gets to ’bate, although the filmmakers stop an inch before she practice-fellates a banana, while

Jones hasn’t been sexualized on screen since at least The Betsy in 1978.

Also, for what it’s worth, here’s a studio product that acknowledges the depressing difficulties of marriage, particularly for those decades into their stint. That this will all work out swimmingly is never in doubt, but kudos for a scene where Streep’s mousy matron, forever in hushed deference to her grouchy man, elucidates on how it always felt like their marriage was building to something new, only to stall into miserable oblivion. Still, stray moments of blunt honesty don’t excuse giving Carell nothing to do—he could have a second life as a nonthreatening therapist, should he want it—and for sticking Streep in a nothing role that’s either demeaning or proof that she can do anything—although it’s likely both. n

he video for “Yoshua Alikuti” is completely effing brilliant, a nearly scene-to-scene recreation—down to the text font—of Lil Wayne’s vid for “A Milli.” Wayne shot his in L.A., and a posse shadows him as he swaggers around the set of his next single’s video, “Got Money.” Birdman shows up and tosses him the keys to a new Rolls, a gift for his record sales. In “Yoshua,” the first single from the Very Best’s MTMTMK, Esau Mwamwaya and Johan Hugo are in Nairobi. Es jumps on a beatdown-looking clunker, and his stroll-with-crew starts when he emerges from a shanty, rather than an air-conditioned tour bus. Wayne pauses to graze the food services spread; Es grabs some street-cooked bread from a vendor. In L.A., Weez sips a censored drink, presumably something laced; in Kenya, Es is handed a glass-bottled orange soda—which they censor, too—while sitting in the barber’s chair.

It’s a very smart nod to what the Very Best are doing. Yes, they’re into hip-hop and Lil Wayne like anybody else is, and they create their own flavor of urban music. But theirs has a completely different perspective, one that’s not so big on pomp and bombast. It’s more about melody and heart, and it transcends language in a way that African music never really has for American audiences.

See, Es is from Malawi, a nation of nearly 16 million people packed into about 45,000 square miles of southeast Africa—about the size of Pennsylvania.

It’s one of the must underdeveloped nations in the world. There’s a ton of poverty, death and HIV/AIDS. And yet the sun rises on Malawi, “the warm heart of Africa,” every day the way that it does here in Philadelphia. We can get down with music that emerges out of such struggle, yet is full of such hope. That’s one of the things Es has in his voice: hope, alongside faith, determination, joy and sadness. It’s a voice that sings in Chichewa, but it doesn’t matter because with Radioclit’s production support, it’s been given the perfect vehicle.

“So many people were telling us that the Very Best wouldn’t go anywhere because Esau didn’t sing in English. We obviously didn’t listen,” says Hugo, the Swedish remaining half of Radioclit present on their July-released sophomore.

Hardcore, But More Philadelphia’s premier hardcore music festival turns 7.

All of which makes it even easier to love a festival that already offers a lot to hardcore fans. “The 10-year-old kid in me is beyond psyched that we’re going to see Suicidal Tendencies,” says McKay. “The young hardcore kid in me goes, ‘How the hell did we get Suicidal, Cro-Mags, Gorilla Biscuits, Lifetime, Breakdown, Negative Approach, Killing Time all to say yes?’”

Four-day passes to This Is Hardcore are already sold out, but three-day passes and tickets to showcases on all four days remain available. McKay expects more than 1,000 fans on Thursday night’s opening banger and more than 2,000 at shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“This year we’ve got a venue that can hold twice as many people as before, and it’s still hardcore bands on there,” he adds. “We haven’t sold out with the pop punk or the metal core.” n

Don’t be tricked by Wussy marking themselves as “Midwestern drone” on their Facebook page. The Cincinnati band are far more fleet-footed than that, as the four-piece combine alt-country with indie-pop to create music that’s alternately autumnal and propulsive. It’s the sort of down-home sound that would make a good complement to a Hold Steady set. Chuck Cleaver and Lisa Walker — the band’s one-two vocal punch — founded Wussy in 2001, and though the group are still fighting to get their name out there, things have been on the upswing for ‘em over time. Legendary rock critic Robert Christgau placed Wussy’s Funeral Dress II and Strawberry within the top 10 of his “best of 2011” list, and this fall, the group will back the Afghan Whigs on that band’s reunion run. By 2013, Wussy will hopefully be experiencing the greater acclaim and exposure they deserve. (Reyan Ali)

ideo of This Is Hardcore’s inaugural 2006 festival shows a throng of thrashing, sweaty, shirtless, short-haired men, pitching heads-first off stages as Philadelphia’s own Blacklisted pounds uncompromising beats and stuttery guitar riffs. Fast-forward to August 2012, and much remains the same. Blacklisted will play again on Friday, Aug. 11, as it has in all six of the This Is Hardcore fests; young men will writhe and spasm atop barricade-less, dive-ready stages; and vegan food trucks, AIDS awareness groups and left-leaning political activists will line the sidewalks outside.

Yet, as it turns seven, This Is Hardcore has come of age. A new venue at Electric Factory doubles its capacity. More than 50 bands will perform from Thursday, Aug. 9 through Sunday, Aug. 12, including icons like Suicidal Tendencies, Cro-Mags and Gorilla Biscuits, and up-and-coming bands such as Beware, Stick Together and Agitator.

Joe McKay, a.k.a. Joe Hardcore, has been running This Is Hardcore since 2006, when, after New Jersey’s Hellfest collapsed, a group of local hardcore fans began agitating for a Philadelphia version. From the beginning, the fest focused exclusively on hardcore. Many of the bands on the schedule are repeat performers. Three— Blacklisted, Cold World and Wisdom of Chains—have participated in all six festivals.

This Is Hardcore succeeds, McKay says, because of Philadelphia’s DIY culture. “You have Andy Nelson from Paint It Black and Ceremony who, when he’s not on tour, will book shows. Greg Daly, when he’s not managing World Inferno Society, he’s booking shows or working the door. Liam [Wilson] from Dillinger Escape Plan, when he’s not on tour being a rock ‘n roll bassist, you can find him at the First Unitarian Church, marking hands,” says McKay. “I think that speaks volumes for our aesthetic and how we go about things.”

McKay says that he’s committed to keeping this DIY spirit, even as the festival grows. For instance, conventional venues like the Electric Factory and Union Transfer had to agree to This Is Hardcore’s “no barricades” policy (to make it easier to stage dive) and allow outside

Frustrated Lady Your girlfriend is gonna have to decide who’s more important to her: her current girlfriend or her ex-girlfriend. And she’s gonna have to decide which feelings are more important to her: her current girlfriend’s feelings or her ex-girlfriend’s feelings.

But those might not be decisions she has to make right now.

You don’t say how long you two have been together, and that’s an important detail. You can’t expect to come first if you’ve been dating this girl for only a few weeks or months. It’s generally a bad sign—a sign of emotional immaturity—when a person puts a brand-new girlfriend/boyfriend first; it’s an even worse sign when a new/newish girlfriend/boyfriend demands to be put first.

Dating is about discovery: You spend time with a person to determine if they’re the one you want to put first “for the rest of your life.” (In theory, anyway.) During this trial period—the time that falls between a first meeting and a joint decision to make a more serious commitment—your girlfriend’s close friends, family members and even her manipulative ex may have a stronger and more legitimate claim on her time and attention than you do.

So if it’s been less than 12 weeks, FL, then I would say your girlfriend’s willingness to prioritize her creepily controlling ex could be excused.

But if you’ve been dating for longer than three months, if you two are very serious about one another, and your girlfriend still abandons you whenever her ex snaps her fingers … well, that’s a very bad sign. Your girlfriend may have a serious and seriously dysfunctional emotional entanglement with an ex. If that’s the case, FL, I see confrontations, ultimatums, tears, broken leases, and other dramas coming your way over the next three to six months.

Decide now if your current girlfriend is worth the grief. n
