Diplo + Mad Decent Block Party At the risk of sounding like a tired old man, I remember when Diplo’s Mad Decent Block Party was actually a block party. A girlfriend lived on Green Street by the Institute Bar, and she ordered me, via text, to come hang at this insane free party outside her front door. I consented. It was insane: hipsters everywhere hula-hooping, summer drinking and twerking before twerking became ubiquitous. These days, it’s a multi-city, traveling behemoth of a festival with a pre- and post-party at Union Transfer. All told, this is literally about 15-plus hours of straight madness, from inside the night before and outside on the day of—then back inside until 2 a.m. on Saturday morning. The partygoer that turns up the whole time deserves a medal.

You know what’ll be the apex of it all? Probably when DJ Snake takes to the Festival Pier stage to doll out his 2014 super-jam, “Turn Down For What.” There is no denying that song (and its correspondingly awesome video) has powers to make you bug the hell out. The typically young and sexy crowd on the Delaware will also delight in Chance the Rapper, a rising talent in the realm of weird and trippedout cerebral hip-hop, and Dillon Francis, an L.A.-based EDM producer who specializes in the chiller, island-vibe flavor of moombahton.

Certainly, Diplo himself has tons of ammo to get the kids riled up. He just released a quite-good compilation called Random White Dude Be Everywhere, a collection of remixed tracks, like from his 2013 and 2012 EPs, including “Revolution,” “Biggie Bounce” and “Express Yourself.” Of course, if he wanted to, he could go deep to his 2004 debut, Florida, a nod to his Mississippi-born, U Central Florida-turned-Templetransfer upbringing. It’s a totally tight record on par with DJ Shadow’s work, which began about eight years prior. No doubt, though, the crowd’ll be anticipating some Major Lazer staples like “Pon de Floor” or the magnificent Bruno Mars and Tyga-guested “Bubble Butt.” Hell, maybe he’ll toss in M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” if he’s feeling playful—and if he wants to blow the UT roof off at 1:40 a.m. // BILL CHENEVERT Pre-party and afterparty: Thurs., Aug, 7, 9pm and Fri., Aug. 8, 10pm. $25. Hampton Sides: In the Kingdom of Ice The North Pole is one of the few visited parts of the globe that still holds a great deal of mystery beneath its icy exterior. Never even mind the mythical stuff we imagine there—the Arctic Circle’s documented history is even more captivating than anything fairy tales have to offer, starting in the late 19th century when several opposing theories were raised about the region’s true nature. Whether there was a civilized evergreen paradise nestled at the top of the world or a desolate wasteland that defied the known laws of physics, it was going to take a lot of manpower—and even more money—to make the trip to find out. Enter James Gordon Bennett, the wealthy, eccentric publisher of the New York Herald, whose obsession with spectacle made him a suitable if nevertheless unorthodox choice to finance such an expedition—and come July 1879, with the young Lieutenant George Washington De Long captaining a crew of more than 30 souls, the U.S.S. Jeannette set sail from San Francisco for what would turn out to be “the most unforgiving territory on Earth.”

Hampton Sides, author of In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the U.S.S. Jeannette, is no stranger to thrilling non-fiction, having previously tackled topics ranging from World War II to the manhunt for Martin Luther King, Jr.’s killer. In the span of nearly 500 pages, he works his way through the group’s perilous journey with almost first-person precision. King Britt and Dozia’s Back2Basics Reunion Yes, it’s Back2Basics’ triumphant return! King Britt and Dozia Blakey’s iconic party—born in 1990 at Silk City, with a two-night-aweek model of a band joining DJs on a Monday and a straight-up dancefest on Saturday—is getting a revival at the new-andimproved Hard Rock Café. Jamaica Independence Concert On August 6, 1962, the Caribbean island of Jamaica declared its independence from England; given America’s own successful schism from the same country, Philly is a more than appropriate site to host a festive party to celebrate that nation’s freedom. The Jamaica Pennsylvania Association, with Black Music Promotions, is set to present the largest Jamaican independence soiree our state has to offer, and it won’t be your average tailgating party in the park, either: A guaranteed cultural explosion is in store, offering everything from mouth-watering traditional foods, vendors up the wazoo, and, of course, fantastic live music.

Headlining the event to celebrate her illustrious 50 years in the music industry will be reggae queen Marcia Griffiths, the former I-Threes member famed for her collaboration with Bob Marley and the Wailers and her widely-loved re-recording of Bunny Wailers’ “Electric Boogie.” True trailblazers Black Uhuru, considered the ambassadors of reggae for being the first group to win an Emmy in the genre, has been bringing down houses around the world for over three decades. Other island sensations like Half Pint, I-Wayne, Mighty Sparrow, Wayne Wonder and Roy Rayan are scheduled to sizzle onstage, too, all backed by the Inner Roots Band.

Monge took Hafford to one of the museum’s private areas, to a musky old concretefloored storage space he’d never even heard of: the Mummy Room, where several Peruvian mummies (plus a couple of bear skulls) were kept. He started looking around. And indeed, tucked away on a shelf, there was a crate with no number on it that looked big enough to hold a human—a big one, at that. It was nailed shut. It had never been opened.

So Hafford did what any archeologist in a room full of mummies would do: got a crowbar and pried the crate open.

Inside, a dirty, dusty skeleton lay intact, enveloped in wax, its bones still positioned as they would have been in life. The condition was striking; Hafford immediately thought of Han Solo frozen in carbonite.

“When you excavate bodies, even when they’re in good condition, you know you have to disassemble them,” he says. Despite what we often see in horror movies, he explains, there’s nothing left holding the bones together after the cartilage has deteriorated.

Typically, therefore, the excavator is the last person to see human remains articulated as a full skeleton.

But Woolley had preserved this skeleton in a unique fashion, using wax and perhaps some plaster around the casing, which kept most of the bones preserved—other than the skull, which Hafford describes as a “kind

of crushed skull cap where it would have been sticking up the most and the weight of the dirt has pushed it in.”

So opening the crate that had been sitting, unknown, in the Penn Museum’s bowels for the better part of a century, he says, was “almost like finding it in the field. This makes it still more the feeling of encountering the very people we are trying to learn about— and makes for a palpably human connection, despite the intervening six and a half millennia.”

It’s hard to know how many more skeletal remains like this one exist. But one thing’s for sure: No more will ever set foot in Philadelphia.

After World War I, the League of Nations established the state of Iraq and kept it under British control—and British archeologist Leonard Woolley saw a unique opportunity.

Modern civilization’s roots, after all, were based in ancient Mesopotamia, where Iraq is situated. Woolley boarded a steamship in September 1922, got an excavation permit in Baghdad, headed to Ur and began digging.

During his 12 years working in the country, he found hundreds of bodies buried underground, including what are today thought to be Sumerian royals, gold, silver, and pottery. Writer Agatha Christie, who was one of numerous notable British celebrities who attended the dig, would later write her novel

heard of any ancient skeletons sent to Penn from Iraq, he thought it was odd that Woolley would have considered sending them in the first place: “I thought, ‘Why would we get that? Most of those ended up in the natural history museum in London.’”

He started asking around. No one in the archaeology department knew anything about the Ur skeletons, and most assumed the note was a mistake—Woolley must have sent the bodies to London. Still, Hafford went to the anthropology department to see if he could turn up any surprises.

Woolley’s note said one body was in an “extended” position—which is not an official term, but which suggested to Hafford that if these remains really did exist, he wouldn’t just be opening up a box of scattered bones.

This would be a complete human figure.

Dr. Janet Monge knew of one. And she’d known about it for a while. The curator-incharge at the museum’s physical anthropology department told Hafford about an unidentified skeleton that had been tucked away inside a sealed crate for at least as long as the three decades she’d been working at Penn. “I periodically visited it,” she says. “I was always drawn to open up the crate and actually see it… and scan the specimen.” But with no identification number, no catalog card, and nothing to actually explain where it came from, she’d never actually had a good reason to do so.

rad Hafford was getting ready to head to Iraq this past May when he first caught wind of the skeleton.

An archaeologist at the University of Pennsylvania, Hafford had been working for almost two years at that point on a joint project with the British Museum in London and the National Museum in Baghdad, attempting to digitize the artifacts that the late British archaeologist Sir Leonard Woolley had excavated from the ancient Mesopotamian kingdom of Ur, which was located in what’s now modern-day Iraq. Woolley had unearthed the kingdom during digs between 1922 and 1934, and had turned over the artifacts along with his notes to the three museums along the way.

Having become particularly adept at reading Woolley’s handwriting after spending many years studying the Ur findings, Hafford was the first scholar at Penn’s Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology to take note, 83 years later, of a curious piece of correspondence that Woolley had sent in 1931.

“It said we [the Penn Museum] were going to receive two skeletons,” Hafford says. “But we didn’t have anyone at that time who analyzed skeletons.”

That’s because in 1931, the U.S. was kneedeep in the Great Depression; unemployment was at 15 percent and rising, and institutions everywhere, including Penn, had suffered huge layoffs. So not only had Hafford never

The skeleton Woolley would send to Penn was unearthed in what the archaeologist referred to as the Flood Pit. “He found 10 feet of silt from a large water event some 45 feet down from the top of the pit,” Hafford says.

“Our skeleton was in that flood layer, [which means] he lived after the flood and his grave was cut down into the silts of it.” Woolley suggested this might have been the very Great Flood referenced in the Biblical book of Genesis.

“Floods were common on the river plain,” Hafford points out, “but this one was big. It may even have inspired legends—but we can’t be sure of that.”

Woolley’s arrangement was set up so that Baghdad’s national museum kept half of what was found in the dig, while Penn and the National Museum in London split the other half.

Iraq’s tumultuous history notwithstanding, the museum and its collections successfully weathered the 20th century—until the U.S.-led invasion to topple Saddam Hussein’s regime, during which the museum was famously ransacked and looted for 48 hours in April 2003. Reports say that 40 statues were taken from the public galleries, along with an unknown number of smaller items—estimates put the total number of excavation site pieces stolen at about 3,100—many of which were essentially priceless. There’s been

an ongoing effort over the last decade to find the lost artifacts, with mixed results.

Around that time, Penn and the British Museum had a thought: Given the lack of stability in Iraq the time seemed ripe to start digitizing as many Iraqi artifacts as possible—particularly, the plentiful Woolley finds, long divided across three continents. They’re calling the digitization project, which is receiving its lead funding from the Leon Levy Foundation, “Ur of the Chaldees: A Virtual Vision of Woolley’s Excavations,” and are hoping to have it done by 2015.

When they do, they hope to include everything Woolley found, which will include artifacts from all three museums. This has, of course, proven difficult on the Baghdad side, given the constant fighting in Iraq—including the more recent terrorism that’s been storming the country, led by The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

Hafford regularly travels to the Middle East, and he’s been attempting to get a permit to go to Iraq to attend the museum and excavation site. He recently returned from Kurdistan, the stable section of northern Iraq, but he’s been unable to get into Baghdad, and thinks even if he received a permit, the cost of attending, which might include security detail, would add another degree of difficulty. “When I started in archeology, I tended to be a little naïve,” he admits. “I want to study the ancient world—that’s what I

want to know about—but the modern world sits over it.” Even for archeologists, sometimes the concerns of the living trump those of the dead.

As for the skeleton, Hafford has been

studying it since his discovery in the Penn Museum. A lot of work still remains to be done, but there are some things he knows about the body many in the department have jokingly named “Noah.”

For instance: The skeleton is likely from the Ubaid period, which lasted from 5500 to 4000 B.C. It’s likely the person, who was between 5-foot-8 and 6 feet tall, was buried in a mass grave in 4500 B.C.—putting the artifact at about 6,500 years.

“That’s a good date for this guy,” says Hafford. “We have some pottery that was found with him, too”—namely, 10 pots, four of which Woolley also sent to Penn in the London-Baghdad-Philly split.

There were what Woolley called “royal” tombs at Ur, though Hafford doesn’t think Noah is necessarily royalty. He appears to be related to the rest of the population found inside and, due to his stature, well-developed muscle and relative old age, “may have been important in his community.”

These kinds of questions and maybes represent the excitement Hafford finds in his work: the opportunity to test hypotheses with research, and the promise of further

discovery. “Even if it’s been 85 years or so since [Woolley] pulled it out of the ground,” he says, “no work has been done on it since.

It’s largely in the condition it was in there [in Iraq]. And we can probably learn a lot more.

We’ve got so many new techniques now— things Woolley never even dreamed of.”

For instance: Monge says a CT scan is in order “because it’s in a fragile state … and it looks like it may be very hard to remove the wax without damaging the underlying bone.” CT scans often help archeologists to get a sense of what the person may have looked like; the technique is commonly used by the British Museum on displayed mummies. From there, she explains, “we can look at evidence of trauma—for example, we could look for evidence of any other kind of paleopathology”—or for ancient diseases, and whether this guy was infected. Not to mention a “chemical analysis of the bones to look for certain isotopes,” which would signal certain 4,500 B.C. dietary habits.

And then there’s this: Since the note Hafford found says Woolley sent two skeletons to the Penn Museum in 1931, that means somewhere on South Street, there may be one more lost Mesopotamian laying around, waiting to be discovered again.

ot all that long ago, self-proclaimed food cognoscenti were declaring— inaccurately—the death of French food. And if you listened carefully, there was an edge of glee to their proclamations: Fusion had replaced the classics of haute cuisine, and good riddance to all that technical rigor; never-ending processions of small plates eventually, for a time, knocked the classic starter-main-dessert routine from its place of primacy; food pundits searched far and wide for the next great trend; and the chattering class had all but turned its back on the supposedly fusty old traditions of great French cooking.

But you always, as countless country songs go, come back to the one you love. And here in Philadelphia, we’ve never really lost our love of dishes that, to some extent, are rooted in, or informed by, the great Gallic tradition. Kevin Sbraga, for all his global influences, is currently accompanying spring lamb with sauce bordelaise. Daniel Stern includes a blanquette with his “variations of pork.”

Pierre Calmels seems to carry around an unabridged edition of Larousse Gastronomique in his head, able to translate a French classic into magic in the dining room with ease.

Add Townsend Wentz to this list, who, at his eponymous restaurant on East Passyunk, is cooking up a Gallic storm right now. I asked him what he calls his style of food there during a follow-up phone interview, and he said, simply, “We just call it French.”

Of course, Wentz has always been a chef of deep intelligence and creativity, which means that twists and turns along the way, deviations from orthodoxy, may be expected. Or not: It depends on the dish. Pan roasted sweetbreads, for example, sandwiched a rich slab of grilled veal tongue, all of it plated on an umber-toned veal jus, perfumed subtly with preserved lemons, that all shimmered against the plate. But it was the so-called Spanish gribiche that grabbed my attention most: Wentz had electrified the classic eggy sauce with boquerones, lending each bite a bright, pickly jolt.

Black bass with cockles embodied the season perfectly: Each delicate bite of fish, dragged through the zucchini-basil purée, was like a transmogrification of the farmers market onto the plate. Marinated hamachi evidenced a more modern take on French cooking, which branches out to encompass cuisines it’s traditionally not necessarily associated with in the popular imagination—in this case, Japanese. It arrived like a particularly beautiful print on the plate, a rectangular fractal pattern speckled with sesame, cucumber, cilantro, apple and furikake, a rice seasoning that in this iteration is composed of nori, wasabi, toasted sesame, dried sweet potato, citrus zest and more.

Wild striped bass, on the other hand, was more classically Euro-influenced, and while the tang of the basquaise peppers and slick of oloroso-sherry

sauce owe a serious debt to Iberia, the potato fondant bridged Spain and France with ease. Roasted Giannone chicken, air-chilled and concentrated, featured exceptional leg galantine stuffed with chicken mousse and wrapped in speck, and a roasted-chicken-and-madeira jus with bluefoot mushrooms and popping with peas. It’s a chicken to think about long after you leave.

A phenomenal lamb special—earthy, tender slices of loin, and braised neck and a bit of shoulder with caramelized pearl onions, plums, cherries, grapes, and celery and zucchini batonnets— could have benefitted from some more acidic component, the better to cut it with and frame all those other ambrosial notes. I loved it anyway.

And for all those great sauces, I wish they’d serve thicker slices of bread, the better to sop up all that brilliantly-crafted decadence spreading on the plates.

Not that I left any sauce with the skate, a perfectly seared wing luxuriating in an uni emulsion with a fricassee of Hunter’s Farm corn and generous hunks of large-diced bacon. And even if I did have some of that unexpectedly light-yetdecadent emulsion left, I’d have simply tipped the plate back and drunk it straight, perhaps asking for a shot glass to make it easier. And the unabashedly chocolatey Valrhona soufflé—“I mean, we have jammed as much chocolate in there as we can,” Wentz told me—with its side of Pernod Chantilly, is easily one of the better desserts I’ve tasted this summer.

All of this is paired with a very well-conceived beverage program that notably offers some of the more interesting, rewarding glass pours around, including an excellent Zweigelt rosé on tap, and cocktails that, even if you don’t finish them before you begin eating, are layered enough to work well with your food. After my Cynar- and Chartreusebased “One Sunday Evening,” I ordered the very pleasant Jacquere from France’s Savoie. It cut the rich sauces, went toe-to-toe with the brighter green notes of others, and sipped deathknelleliciously on its own.

Townsend is a deeply successful refutation to the often-threatened deathknell of ambitious French dining. And further proof of Philadelphia’s ever increasing respect for this remarkable culinary tradition. 

At Avance, Chef Justin Bogle is essentially running an in situ course on how to bridge the gap between occasionally avant-garde technique and the sort of comfort that a great restaurant meal should provide. This was embodied in the cauliflower chawanmushi, a texturally perfect rendering of the Japanese custard, here studded with thumb-sized Nantucket bay scallops, their seared crowns looking like little umber-toned exclamation points set against the creamy expanse of dashi-rich egg custard. One bite highlighted those sweet scallops, a second the refreshing snap of pickled romanesco, another the crystalline pop of sake-cured trout roe, yet another the bright zip of meyer lemon zest confit. beauties, first roasted under pressure and then finished on the grill and brushed with the same baste as the piri piri chicken. Dipped into one of the two homemade sauces (BBQ or hot), they’re excellent. The lobster roll, the most expensive dish on the menu at $18, is slicked with lemon butter yet never overwhelmed by it: That glistening addition clearly is employed in the service of framing the inherent sweetness of the meat itself, not supplanting its claim to primacy.

Elote corn, occasional kernels blackened along their flanks and smoky against the sweetness of their neighbors, packed the spice of chili paste alongside the almost briny cotija cheese, as well as aioli, green onions, cilantro and a zip of lime juice. Scooped up with fried corn chips, it’s addictive. French fries are perfectly crisp and wellpaired with a exuberantly garlicky aioli. (B.F.) The rabbit leg confit maintained a moistness and delicacy that the notoriously difficult-to-cook meat rarely achieves. Forked with zuurkool (think of sauerkraut) as well as a coin of smoked pork sausage, and maybe a tender carrot slice, this was as hearty as it was thoughtful. So, too, were the bitterballen, gorgeous fried meatballs of roux-creamy braised pork lifted with nutmeg and mustard. They arrived four to the order, a neat little procession of rich, palate-coating goodness. One of them had developed a crack in its carapace, and the impossibly moist center had begun to ooze out: one of the sexiest things I’d seen all month. A special of chicken croquettes, also perfectly fried, embodied a different side of the concept, seasoned with onion powder and thyme and based on the previous day’s impeccable rotisserie chicken. A recent menu started with a single deep-cupped oyster—the magnificently named Shoregasm—anointed with a spiced apple granita. It worked as an hors d’oeuvre, a warm-up lap and a palatecleanser all at once, and was swiftly followed by house-cured salmon. Three velvety slices, subtle with the aromas of soft herbs like mint, basil, dill and cilantro, were each wrapped around a spray of pea shoots exploding from their ends like cartoon contrails on an animated comet. Attention to the minute differences in flavor and texture are what lift many of the dishes here above the fray.

The generous green dumplings arrived still sizzling from their stint in the oil, a lacy, intricate carapace of wafer-thin happiness clinging to their sides. Inside was a joyous gathering of water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, leeks and shiitakes, all of it homemade, all of it infinitely better than the majority of what you’ll taste elsewhere. Ped yang was anchored by sliced barbecued duck with skin so crispy it reminded me of some kind of perfect hybrid between Peking duck and fried chicken. The meat itself played well off its ginger sauce, and the portion size was more than generous. (B.F.)

Each thumbnail-sized piece of the crispy fish tacos was perfectly fried with beer batter and crunchy. The chorizo burger was better—traditional and jalapeno-spiked sausages blended with ground beef into a flavorful 9-ounce patty, topped by a crown of fried queso tropical. The real bright spot at Lucha, it seemed, was with pork. Pork confit, swirling with life from its overnight orange juice marinade, anchored a happy hour carnitas taco. Each bite left the faintest aroma on the tongue, the result of smart additions of cinnamon, cumin, clove, and Mexican Coca-Cola. Cochinita pibil was well conceived and executed, each bite ringing with the pleasant tang of guajillo peppers, a whiff of achiote and orange juice. (B.F.) MORGAN’S PIER 221 N. For the kind of brunch that sticks to the proverbial ribs, and that offers nourishment for the belly as well as for the soul, Porto is just about perfect. Savor a crunchy fried chicken breast lavished with sweet-spicy maple jalapeño yogurt glaze, all of it sandwiched with bacon between the geometry of house-made cheddar waffles. It’s called the “Yo Cuz,” and no hangover is a match for its crave-able charms. The cheesesteak is rendered as the “Ultimate Sin,” a green piri-piri-streaked ribeye beneath a crown of St. George cheese and cosseted in a perfect Portuguese roll. The side of roasted potatoes, tangled up with their caramelized onions and peppers, are standouts in the city’s brunch-wars. (B.F.) Red Kings 2, replete with private rooms and plenty of karaoke opportunities upstairs, is a phenomenal addition to Chinatown. The space is simple yet pleasant, service is exceptionally friendly, and the food challenges, inspires and, as that cabbage proved, rarely disappoints. Boiled sliced lamb in chili sauce was infinitely more than that humble description, a stunning mountain of earthy meat joined by petals of sweet onions, thick slices of nutty garlic and snappy broccoli florets. Dan dan noodles, also numbing but far from painful,

El Loco Pez seems to be a nice middle ground where all people can feel comfortable. It’s a bar with a sense of inclusion, humor ... and damn good tacos and drinks. Carne asada was the most familiar,

the short ribs tender and deeply seasoned with cumin, as well as Worcestershire and soy. Taco al pastor is nearly halfway between dinner and dessert, the distinct whiff of cinnamon and clove in the tender chunks of pork combine with the pineapple in ways that are distinctly reminiscent of an old-school pineapple upside-down cake.

Order two of these. The menu encourages overconsumption. On the drink tip: The margarita at El Loco Pez is a balanced gem, neither teeth-suckingly tart nor cavity-causing sweet. (B.F.)

Salmon belly crudo arrived marching across a brick of pink Himalayan salt and glistening a similar color. Drizzled with lemon oil and brightened up with radish and cucumber, it was a deceptively simple preparation, resonant and restrained all at once. Charred octopus embodied all the tender meatiness you’d hope for, and without the gnawing chew it often falls victim to. Knobs of morcilla and coins of fried fingerlings lent it a lovely Spanish air without ever feeling heavy-handed. Speck-wrapped Alaskan halibut was just barely overcooked, but that was a minor hiccup: A quick drag of that otherwise excellent fish through the almond gazpacho and a singing brown butter moistened everything right up. And, as Chef Mike Stollenwerk did with a particularly memorable serrano-wrapped cod back at Fish a few years ago, accompanying roasted grapes and cauliflower gave it a sweetness and depth that jibed perfectly with the ham. He also topped it with what he described as dried milk powder solids, an ingenious, delicious preparation that involves straining the fat out of brown-butter solids and then re-cooking them in butter before mixing them with roasted marcona almonds.

It’s like butter on steroids: An A-Rod of lactic goodness. (B.F.)

This is serious American food devoid of pretense, just as it should be. The lobster roll was a wonder of dignified simplicity, the lobster cooked in a court bouillon just to the point of tenderness and not a moment longer, the brioche roll gleefully buttered and toasted until the edges took on the texture of a creme brulee’s crown. Yellowfin tuna was cast in an earthier light than usual, its accompanying parsley-caper vinaigrette and olives framing the fish in a unique and riveting manner. Kampachi, with its hit of cumin salt and cilantro, and the bright tang of lime and gooseberry, was a gently spicy, vaguely Latin-inspired plating that lingered on the palate long after it was swallowed. Depending on what you order, the components here will either be brought in or made in-house, but they’re all conceived and crafted with smarts and careful attention to detail. The crab cake anchoring the Rybread sandwich, for example, is a lightly packed, filler-free, homemade puck of notable elegance. Despite the name, it’s served on a fluffy brioche bun with lettuce, tomato and a chipotle mayonnaise that packs just the right punch. Turkey is lovingly roasted by the Rybrew team, too, and makes appearances (if you like) in the reuben-referencing “New York” sandwich and others. There’s also a solid selection of salads and a rotating roster of soups. Whether folks are here for a quick bite or to stock up on beer from the well-curated selection of bottles, they’re all happy.

A recent weekend brunch—it’s offered Saturdays and Sundays between 11am and 3pm—was both decidedly tasty and stupendously filling. Tortilla soup, anchored by a pasilla-amped chicken broth of serious richness, also boasted delicious pulls of chicken as well as a veritable flotilla of avocado, queso fresco, crema and a tangle of tortilla strips. Eggs benedicto is enough for two as a result of its stunning heartiness, the chorizo and black beans perfect foils for a chipotle hollandaise that you’ll want to lick from the plate.

You can pretty much munch your way through the menu at this Brewerytown newcomer with relative impunity, confident in the fact that you’ll be eating well. Start off with guacamole and chips, but don’t stop there. After all, the tacos here are Shifty’s raison d’être. The Rub was a highlight, its tender strings of braised brisket singing a song of adobo and chipotles, the slow simmering heat building yet never cresting. The Hem and Hawl, on the other hand, demonstrated the kitchen’s aptitude with fish: Well-cooked and tender tilapia done on the plancha was anchored by an attractive slaw that brought enough crunch and liveliness to each bite. The Towner, a damn-the-orthodoxy handful of spicy chicken nuggets joined by translucent pickled red onions, cheese sauce, homemade ranch dressing and iceberg lettuce was a shamelessly savory, messy item that almost single-handedly justifies a walk down the street for a six pack. a particularly meaty porcini mushroom, then gets hard seared and tossed with red pepper caramel: Magnificent. Homemade andouille showed up like a surprise every other forkful, borne alongside blackeyed peas of heft and delicacy. But it was the single fried chicken leg riding shotgun that stole the show: Skin this crisp and flesh this tender is something to cheer. Oysters were made new with a side cup of pomegranate mignonette, the fruit’s sweetness electrifying the briny bivalves. (B.F.) TAQUERIA FELIZ 4410 Main St. 267.331.5874. taqueriafeliz.com Cuisine: Mexican Grasshopper tacos: petite, unabashed, four to the plate, each with its flanks akimbo and its centers piled high with splinteringly crisp, garlic-kissed insects—their bellies glistening, their legs a tangle of wiry stiffness. There was no hiding what this was, no glossing over or attempting to disguise the reality of tortillas stuffed with bugs, guacamole, onions and cilantro. It was a deeply respectful rendering of one of the great, underappreciated Mexican treats, and without a doubt the best version of tacos de chapulines I’ve had in years— probably the best I’ve had since first falling for them in Oaxaca itself. Each bite was a nutty, crunchy, subtly sour delight—an aria to antennae; a love letter to the locust-like. (B.F.) THE GOOD KING TAVERN 614 S. Seventh St. thegoodkingtavern.com Cuisine: “French Tavern Food” The kitchen here is subtly ambitious, crafting as much in-house as they can. The results are deliciously evident in the meat board, a canoe-sized wooden vessel bearing meltingly delicate foie gras torchon, sliced thin and elegantly perfumed from the Grand Marnier in its marinade; country pate all earthy with pork shoulder and chicken and pork livers, all of it wrapped in bacon; duck rillettes cleverly tossed with a parsley and pickled shallot salad; and nutmegand lavender-kissed Toulouse sausage, produced right here and seared to order. Pickled cauliflower and cabbage dot the plate, the better to cut through the heartiness of those excellent meats.

Tortas Frontera provides a more than pleasant diversion from other quick-eat-style options. Chipotle pork tinga bowl is anchored by tender pork and homemade chorizo, spice heat swirling with the aromatics of the braising liquid and offset by cooling slices of avocado. Vedge, which resides in the stunning space once occupied by Deux Cheminées, does more to bridge the chasm between the artificially distant worlds of the omnivore and the vegan than any restaurant I’ve ever visited. Grilled gochujang tofu boasts three (three!) separate rounds of marinating and arrives in a shallow pool of smoked miso dashi, crowned by a translucent lace of yuba “cracklin,” and accompanied by an edamame puree: soy beans four ways, each of them remarkable. Roasted golden beats are layered on pumpernickel with smoked tofu, avocado, capers and a cucumber dill sauce to perfectly embody the satisfying richness of a smoked salmon sandwich. (B.F.) Cauliflower salad, the thin-sliced florets from nearby Breaking Point Farms, brought together the brininess of picholine olives offset by batons of pear, arugula, knobs of goat cheese and lardons, all of it given posture by a bright apple-cider vinaigrette. Brussels sprouts also had some real love lavished on them: A side portion glistened with a bourbon-maple-chile glaze, which lent a sweetness wellcountered by the sprouts’ own nuttiness. They proved to be a perfect foil for the Lancaster County chicken with its snappy, muslin-thin skin all crisped up and nutty. The meat was decadently moist from its hourlong bath sous vide, and its finishing stint on the plancha tightened it all up into a compact, flavorful package. (B.F.)

writing songs the whole time,” she reassures. “Was I telling people?

Maybe not. I wasn’t ready to showcase myself yet.”

Right now, her band’s perfecting a version of “Wonderwall”— yep, the jam Oasis built. I was more eager to talk about her rendering of “Prototype,” the subtle diamond from Outkast’s 2003 Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, to which she does beautifully jazzflecked justice live in concert. She put out a live album called My Love IS My Life, but took it down from iTunes after a while.

“It doesn’t reflect how I sound now,” Rene confesses. “I think the songs are great—they’re well-written and well thought out—but the execution wasn’t there.”

Although Rene’s only dabbled in guitar, someone in her band is knocking fire from it on “Only in Time,” a buoyant, folksy R&B track that’ll definitely be on the forthcoming LP she’s calling Vintage Heart. It’s already on Spotify, as are “Last Night” and “True Love,” also slated for Vintage, which was recorded mostly in Coatesville, PA and a little in the Poconos. These tracks are right on par with some of the artists Rene says she’d been listening to lately: Alice Smith, Lianne La Havas, Laura Mvula, even Snarky Puppy, which may sound a little goofy, but trust, makes total sense. It feels like her heartbeat is comprised of equal parts jazz and soul, R&B, folk and funk.

Throughout the interview, it’s hard not to be struck by Rene’s booming, full-spirited laugh—like when it’s suggested that hardcore Outkast fans prefer Speakerboxxx and Big Boi to Andre 3000’s The Love Below—her calming tone and generous nature.

She seems like the kind of girl with whom I’d like to have conversation and verbal elation, some stimulation—maybe share our situations, temptations, education and relaxations. Maybe we could take a cruise and listen to The Roots and eat some passion fruit. Or maybe we could just be silent.

“I first heard ‘A Long Walk’ on the radio in our gymnasium when I was 14,” she recalls, “and ever since then, I’ve been a hardcore Jill Scott fan.” Without saying too much, Rene’s last name is also Scott—which made it just a little bit weirder, but twice as awesome, when she’d get, as feedback, “Oh, you’re so Jill.” She welcomes the opinion with open arms. “That” she says, “is an awesome, awesome compliment.” 

h my god, [s]he was fly. [S]he was witty and sweet.

Relaxed and comfortable,” Jill Scott sings—well, more like reflects—on “Some Other Time,” a favorite from her super-fly fourth, The Light of the Sun, a gift from her three Junes ago. It’s a lyric that comes to mind after my phone chat with Lydia Rene, the big-laughing, sweet-speaking songstress ingenue that Philly can claim on a handful of levels. By the way, this girl’s about to blow.

Rene’s dabbled in the background of things for years, providing writing support for dank duo Tejumold and Johari Newton, the once-embattled musical masters behind The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, but she’s stepping into the spotlight herself, with a full-on debut album in the works and a couple Philadelphiaarea gigs this week. Unfortunately, the songs the three made together never got traction. “They were trying to shop all these songs around [to various artists], and then they’d get shelved,” Rene tells PW, having flown home from her current Los Angeles stomping ground the day before. “That kept happening with every artist,” she says. So now, she’s ready to go it alone.

Her Mt. Holly, N.J. childhood, with parents who were churchgoers but also musicians, gave the impressionable Rene a firm foundation on which to blossom. “Their band was really good,” she says, describing times that were “never really strict. It was nice, loving—and we listened to everything.” James Taylor— whose July appearance at Susquehanna Bank yielded rave reviews from Rene’s mom and dad—Carole King, Tower of Power and Earth, Wind & Fire were a few family favorites in her youth.

She started on piano at six years old with her dad until she got good enough to take lessons from his piano teacher, an 84-yearold woman Rene says “was killer on that piano. And she could bust out a jazz solo.”

Rene didn’t really start sharing her songs until late into her college years at Philadelphia University, where she studied fashion design. (The latter’s apparent in her photos; it’s obvious this gorgeous girl’s got her own unique style.) Brutally honest Project Runway champion Jay McCarroll was her portfolio teacher for a term, a man who, unsurprisingly, never held back. “He likes to read people,” she admits with another laugh. “He got super real on them. I don’t think a lot of people can handle it. I thought it was hilarious.” On a break from rehearsals for her current string of shows, Rene says she didn’t make music a priority until after she got her B.A. “I was

A Fest Full of Fabulous

GayFest! returns with a full slate of captivating plays and performances.

I

n 2012, when Rich Rubin, Quince Production’s artistic director, announced to a GayFest! crowd at the Shubin Theatre that the festival would run again the following year, he got an unexpected response. “I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a standing ovation before the show started,” he jokes to PW. “The progress of the festival certainly seems unmistakable. I thought it would take five years, but in our fourth year, we’re taking off.”

It’s true. This year’s 19-day run of queer-flavored plays, oneacts, events and one night stands is as robust as ever. There’s something for everyone, queer or not. In fact, Rubin recalls a male friend of his who saw three out of the four mainstage GayFest! productions a few years ago and said he felt no need to catch the lesbian play, ‘cause “That’s not about my life.” Obviously, that’s wasn’t the point—and Rubin naturally urged his pal to check it out anyway, pointing out the obvious loophole in his logic: “Neither are the millions of plays about heterosexual people.”

Imagine what Philadelphia was like 50 years ago when Robert Patrick’s The Haunted Host debuted at Caffe Cino in Greenwich Village. The landmark play, which Rubin describes as one of the very first gay full-length plays—second only, perhaps, to Lanford Wilson’s The Madness of Lady Bright—is a fast-paced, three-scene comedy that’s full of zingers and oneliners. Once upon a time, there was a real stigma associated with even attending a gay-themed play. Imagine that.

“I remember my friend Carl saying that when he went to see The Boys in the Band in ‘68, the next day” there were whispers, says Rubin: “‘Carl went to Boys in the Band,” they hissed.

Thankfully, it’s a new day. Hopefully, hetero allies across the city will be supporting their queer brothers and sisters for solidarity’s sake. And no one will even think twice about their co-workers’ ticket-purchasing habits.

Sarah J. Gafgen is handling directing duties for Host, almost to Rubin’s reluctance—only because he directed its 25th-anniversary production “in a little studio in the Douglas Fairbanks Theatre on theater row [in Manhattan]. I don’t think it exists anymore,” he says. (He’s right; it was demolished in 2005.) This year, he’s helming a collection of Daniel Talbott pieces, a playwright who’s now a staple at GayFest! One of the three in the trilogy, You Know My Name, is one of Rubin’s all-time favorites. “It’s only about nine or 10 minutes long, and you see these mens’ entire worlds change,” he says. “It’s remarkable.” No Talbott production is complete without actor Calvin Atkinson, and he finally gets his chance to direct with Geoffrey Nauffts’ Next Fall, a play that captures the dynamic of a faithful and faithless boyfriendship. “Much of what fuels the humor is the fact that Luke is a very religious Christian, and Adam is the furthest thing from it,” says Rubin. We talked about spirituality and homosexuality’s tense dynamic, and I suggested that there weren’t enough houses of worship that support a postmodern queer community that may want to praise Him, but don’t feel welcome. “That’s the feeling Adam has,” Rubin attests. “The smart, open, modern churches are too few and far between.”

written by Kathleen Warnock. It’s the one GayFest! play that may have the most buzz, thanks to Philadelphia’s lovable loudmouth Alexander Kacala, who’ll be dipping back into drag to portray Tommy Faymous, who’s also sometimes Miss Fitt. Amber Orion takes on Anna, Tommy’s landlady and dear friend. “[Anna]’s a survivor; she’s tough, but with a huge heart,” says Rubin. “She and Tommy are totally devoted to each other.” The play takes place in Provincetown, that iconic summer destination that attracts wayward artists and free spirits, and one of those is Lydia, who drifts into their dynamic, and everyone’s lives are changed.

The four mainstages don’t even crack the week’s offerings: tonight’s the second and last night of The Bang Group’s funny, song-and-dance-heavy Head Over Heels; the worldtoured Confessions of a Mormon Boy, written and performed

by Steven Fales, runs five nights and tells his story of coming out, excommunication, addiction and prostitution, plus an incredible nine-play collection, Standing On Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays, Sunday’s not-to-be-missed, one-night affair benefiting GayFest! and Equality PA. Speaking of one-nighters, I won’t be missing R. Eric Thomas’ Always the Bridesmaid, which he lovingly subtitles “a romantic comedy about boys, God & baked goods;” the fabulous Rachel Tension’s set that blends hip-hop and tarot card readings, and The Homo Poe Show, presented by Baltimore’s Iron Crow Theatre, that’ll be pieces inspired by Edgar Allan.  Through Sat., Aug. 23. SCREEN REVIEW

The Hundred-Foot Journey If you want to make sure a movie’s feel-good, The Hundred-Foot Journey carries a Triple Crown pedigree: produced by Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg, plus direction from Lasse Hallström, who’s walking familiar ground here after 2000’s Chocolat, which also featured an ambitious woman, a family with big dreams, romance and tables groaning with food bound to bring everybody closer together. It’s the sort of film that guarantees a happy ending just by existing, with even the trailer rushing to assure you that all manner of things will be well.

It’s a package, to be sure, albeit one that’s been beautifully polished. Cinematographer Linus Sandgren applies the same sundrenched affection to the French countryside and a bowl of curry, and composer A. R. Rahman offers a score that carries echoes of his beautiful work in Jodhaa Akbar. Indian film legend Om Puri delivers understated wryness in his performance as patriarch Papa Kadam, and Manish Dayal is effortlessly charming as family chef Hassan, whose palate brings him to the attention of Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren). The rest of the Kadam family maintains a sweet energy that manages to stay on the right side of cloying, a line also walked by Charlotte Le Bon as preternaturally sweet souschef Marguerite, whose flirtation with Hassan feels natural, even framed by the rest of the movie’s predictable artifice.

It’s all part of the film’s determinedly pleasant outlook; even its treatment of racism is approached as just another standoffish neighbor who just needs one good meal to cast all their doubt aside. That sort of well-meaning sheparding prevents The Hundred-Foot Journey from earning much real emotion from viewers, which seems awkward in a film single-mindedly geared towards warming the heart by any means necessary. Still, those needing a sweet finish will find it here. (Genevieve Valentine) REVIEW

Calvary In the opening minutes of Calvary, Father James Lavelle (Brendan Gleeson) takes confession from a man who passes on a death sentence: He’ll kill Father Lavelle in one week. The movie that follows is no whodunit—Lavelle knows his would-be assassin—nor does it offer much in the way of life-affirming leave-takings. This is ritual disguised in naturalism, Stations of the Cross acted out along a rocky shore, its vignettes largely one-on-one as every village resident offers tests of patience and faith.

If that sounds a bit heavy-handed, it can be. Calvary is a film in which characters repeatedly declaim one another’s cliches. But there’s an honesty in its circular discussions and resigned bleakness; its preoccupation with whether the Church can recover from its many sins is one the movie wisely never answers. And it takes its title seriously, drawing a stark picture of a town in which everyone—the performatively atheist doctor (Aidan Gillen), the local louche gentry (Dylan Moran), even Lavelle’s visiting daughter (Kelly Reilly)—inhabits a private hell the good Father can likely never touch.

It takes a mountain of an actor to ground a film like this, but The Guard director John Michael McDonagh knew he had one in Gleeson, who gives a career-defining performance. Wringing dark humor from his own despair and battling mounting frustration, he turns every dialogue into a tour de force. (In one of the film’s most haunting scenes, Father Lavelle faces down a murderer— played by his own son Domhnall—whose unburdening steals over Gleeson in nightmarish quiet.) It’s not surprising that Calvary has moments of melodrama, and the darkly-comic tone slips occasionally as things spiral out of control in the village and Lavelle’s clock ticks down. But the impression that lingers is of Gleeson’s making: that of a harrowing, deeply-felt passion play. (G.V.)

A Week at the Movies

Two new releases underscore how thorny issues of race and culture aren’t treated with care by—or in—the film business.

his week’s new releases, Calvary and The HundredFoot Journey, offer vastly different portraits of small towns, each reflective of the film’s general thoughtfulness about the human condition. In one, an insular burg made up of people seemingly tied to life only by the vividness of their own misery all struggle alone against the often-empty comforts of religion; they come, at last, to no conclusions or revelations whatsoever, except that life is a ceaseless battle to forgive oneself for living through it.

In the other, a rich white woman decides that maybe the young, endlessly kind immigrant next door might be worthy to work in her kitchen after all—if it gets her that second Michelin star.

Among Calvary’s many ethically-thorny scenarios, Father Lavelle confronts an immigrant in their small town (Isaach de Bankolé) about rumors he beat his white girlfriend— and we learn nothing else about him. In The Hundred-Foot Journey, a professional rival of the newly-arrived Indian family employs sabotage and snide asides to townspeople, behaviors so hostile an employee takes them as incitement to arson. In both cases, the person of color on the receiving end is expected to take these aggressions without hostility. If you’re not white, it’s just the cost of doing business.

That said, at least both those movies admit the existence of racism. Presented as a foregone conclusion it may be— no one means to be racist; racism, like weather, happens to occur at intervals—each is at least aware of the patterns racism takes, particularly in close-knit communities, and the damage of people in positions of privilege buying into those patterns. Seeing Lucy this week was a reminder some movies stop short even of that. The Scarlett Johansson action flick had its moments, but her reprimanding an English interpreter amid a life-or-death situation is one of many small digs that could, if we’re generous, be subtle commentary on the Anglo mindset about some mythical,

monolithic East. However, every Asian character in the movie is either a mindless thug or comedically cowed by Lucy, plus there are several more language digs in store— one involves her shooting a man for not speaking English; her infinite mental powers never reach speaking other languages. And when Lucy meets and reaches out to her earliest ancestor, she’s an Aryan vision: blonde, blue-eyed, her arm a straight white line.

In none of these movies is racism the point, but in none of them are issues of race treated with care. Unfortunately, as cool as it would be to cap a week of sitting in the dark with raised eyebrows by offering easy solutions, there are no real conclusions to be drawn. Well, there are, but those who recognize them don’t need them spelled out, and those who most need to recognize them—many in positions of power in the industry—aren’t likely to be convinced by this collection. They’re the same sort who see nothing in Zoe Saldana, accidental human barometer of the sci-fi blockbuster, appearing in three major franchises where her role shifted to provide support to the white male lead, in two of which she was the lone woman in the main cast. (Saldana’s also become a barometer of the kind of blackness Hollywood permits. She’s playing Nina Simone in an upcoming biopic of the singer, against some backlash—colorism impacted the much darker-skinned Simone’s life and career in hurtful ways this casting belies.) It’s an ongoing conversation both in the movies and behind them: movies needn’t be primarily concerned with these issues—not every movie must be Belle—but it’s hard to deny that a major concern facing many English-language movies is how to portray nonwhite people and cultures without mishandling the racism that almost inevitably surrounds them. Until then, it will remain an oddly omnipresent cinematic wallpaper: racism as given, prejudice as prelude. 

ne of the fundamental responsibilities of a living creature is to be mindful of how it exists in relation to its surroundings. Even a plant has to have a sense of special awareness so that it grows towards the sun while reliably anchored towards water. They wind around fences and buildings because even if they aren’t consciously thinking about other lifeforms, their likelihood of survival is greater if they fit into the local flow. And if you live in the city and would like to avoid getting stabbed by people who are sick of your shit, you need to be at least as conscientious as a plant.

I’m not saying it’s OK to stab people. Not at all. I’m just saying if you insist on acting like you’re the only person in the world and keep blocking streets, sidewalks and stairwells, don’t be surprised if someone who has somewhere to be snaps and murders you where you stand.

Unless this is a wacky ‘80s movie and this is your first day in a human body, you should know all this stuff already. But some folks missed the day of school where we all learned how to exist in three-dimensional physical space, so let’s do a refresher.

Advanced level: Driving. In all reality, most people shouldn’t have driver’s licenses. How many times have you dropped your phone on the ground? Yeah, we shouldn’t be in charge of a two-ton object that can go a hundred miles an hour. Yet here we are, letting people take the wheel who are too young to be trusted with voting for City Council.

Driving means paying attention. If you’re in the front of the line of cars waiting at a light, keep your eyes peeled for when it turns green. Accelerate based on how far you can actually go before you have to stop again, not how fast you would go if the road suddenly turned into the set of Tron.

Remember that humans who are moving via bike have the same rights as humans moving via car, and give them plenty of space. Use your fucking turn signals. No matter how briefly you plan to stop, the bike lane is not Super Clever Free Temporary Parking. Same goes for the narrow one-ways of South Philly and NoLibs. If you’re not in a hurry, take public transit.

How to walk. Sometimes you want to take a leisurely walk with three other people. If you live in the suburbs, you can stroll in a line next to each other, taking up all the space in the world, like the hallway-walking scene of every teen-girl movie. In the busy city, it’s a different animal. At max there should be two people in a row, and no matter how engrossing the conversation gets, it’s still your responsibility as a life-form to be aware if someone is coming up from behind.

They might possibly be knife-wielding, it’s hard to say.

Move in a predictable, straight line unless you’re actively passing someone else. If there’s no rush getting to a destination, stick to the edge of the path so others can pass. While walking dogs, keep them next to your legs rather than creating a six-foot radius of unusable space which forces everyone else to adjust to the adorable-but-idiotically capricious whims of a Chihuahua mix. Same with kids.

When approaching a door at the same time as someone on the other side, the person for whom the door swings outwards has the right of way. First person pushes it open with enough force that the second person can easily tag in and pass through next. If someone is following behind, tap a little harder to keep the door open longer for them or hold it open if they need a second to get there. Say “thank you” to people who do this for you.

Dear Mayor Nutter: Have You Ever Gotten High?

If so, how can you turn your back on decriminalization today? If not, why don’t you listen to the rest of us?

I

don’t do drugs anymore. That’s because I’ve learned I’m one of those small number of special people who, thanks to addiction, can’t do any drugs or drink anymore.

I’m OK with that; I can still do other things to indulge myself, like overeat, have sex, drink caffeine and smoke cigarettes.

Despite my history of substance issues, I never liked pot; it wasn’t my poison of choice.

In fact, I can count on one hand the number of times I smoked pot in my entire life. Still, there were those few times—and I suffered no long-term ramifications, either medical or legal, as a result of getting high on pot. I certainly can’t say that about alcohol: Alcohol was a huge problem for me, like it is for many Americans. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 88,000 people die every single year in America thanks to excessive alcohol consumption.

I was lucky not to be one of them; nor, obviously, did I die when I switched my drug of

choice from alcohol to meth.

This means I’m around today, sober and drug-free, to think about what the impact of society’s drug laws really is.

I disclose these things because I think our personal experiences shape the way we view society. As young men and women mature— not just in age but in mindset—what they’ve gone through, whether brief youthful indiscretions or years worth of bad choices like mine, dramatically shape their worldviews.

At least, these experiences certainly should dramatically shape their worldviews.

Which brings us to Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, whose chosen method of escaping reality these days seems to be “working vacations” to France.

A week ago, while discussing marijuana decriminalization with the mayor’s spokesman Mark McDonald, I asked: “Has Mayor Nutter ever gotten high?” McDonald told me he had no idea—that the topic had never

come up in conversation between him and Mayor Nutter.

To me, that sounds a little odd. After all, as mayor, Nutter is the city’s chief executive; he’s in charge of enforcing the city’s laws. Doesn’t it seem as though whether he’s ever smoked pot or not would be remarkably relevant to his personal perspectives on what it means for the city to enforce existing drug laws?

Just for the sake of argument, let’s do a thought experiment here and acknowledge that, hypothetically, it would not make Michael Nutter a bad person if he’d ever smoked pot at least once in his life. I’m not saying he has, of course—just that most Americans who grew up in the 1960s and 1970s did. I can’t say for sure, because he’s allegedly never—not once!—talked about it with his own spokesman, the guy who’s supposed to answer questions about the Mayor to the press.

Personally, if it were me overseeing a police department that, statistically speaking,

arrests people of color at four to five times the rate it arrests white people for the same crimes, I think I’d be moved to go beyond blaming the people arrested and reflect a bit upon our drug-enforcement policies. Indeed, I imagine I’d ponder the vast number of lives being destroyed because of the overtly racist results of those policies.

And I would think about the lucky breaks that I’d caught when I was younger. On the one hand, if I’d gotten away with smoking pot without ever having been caught, I’d praise heaven for the statistics just having happened to fall my way. On the other hand, if I ever had been caught smoking pot and a kind policeman had let me off with just a warning, I’d consider what it means that the newer laws today of America’s post-War on Drugs era specifically do not allow police to grant that kind of mercy anymore.

Michael Nutter doesn’t seem to indulge in this kind of reflection. He and his spokes-

Instead, the mayor has apparently decided to make marijuana decriminalization a platform upon which he can launch a personal vendetta against City Councilman Jim Kenney, who’s championed the decriminalization bill. After all, instead of answering my question, Nutter’s spokesman ducked and dodged and started talking about next year’s mayoral race and how Kenney might be angling into it.

If you ask me, this really demonstrates the mindset of the Nutter administration.

Instead of sincerely caring about a racist law-enforcement policy that takes draconian measures against a vice most Americans now think is relatively harmless, Nutter’s of-

tenacity, Kenney’s bill decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana passed in City Council this June. It’s a popular bill citywide; even the Inquirer editorial board has urged Nutter to sign it.

Yet it sits on the mayor’s desk, unsigned, as Nutter’s office “investigates” what decriminalization would look like. Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey has said in no uncertain terms that, regardless of Council’s bill, state drug laws take precedence and he’s going to keep putting people in jail for possession of pot.

Let’s take a look at the numbers, shall we, and consider just how many young people of color the Philadelphia Police Department has arrested since Kenney’s bill passed and

In 2012, for comparison, the Philadelphia Police Department arrested about 4,200 people, adults and juveniles, for pot possession. Of these people, about 80 percent were non-white. Now, this year, Kenney’s bill passed in June, about six weeks ago. So we can estimate that, in that time, more than 400 Philadelphians have acquired criminal records that stand to deleteriously impact their futures.

Hey, Mayor Nutter: Have you ever gotten high? When you were in high school, did you ever smoke pot? How about when you were in college?

If you did, it didn’t stop you from becoming mayor—so either you never got caught, or whoever caught you gave you a break.

The same kind of break you’re specifically not allowing law enforcement to cut today’s youth.

If you’ve never gotten high, then I wonder why you’re not listening to City Council, the ACLU, Philly NORML, the Philadelphia Inquirer board, and pretty much everyone else under the sun. I mean, if you have no life experience that’s relevant, shouldn’t you listen to everyone who does?

I think those thousands of Philadelphians negatively affected by your police policies deserve to know the answer. Which is it? Are you an astonishingly unsympathetic hypocrite? Or just an astonishingly unempathetic ideologue? n

fice would rather make the discussion into a power play about next year’s mayor’s race.

In fact, this week the mayor has upped the ante by questioning Kenney’s motives in tackling the marijuana issue. “Suddenly, this is the great civil-rights issue of our day,” Nutter said to the Inquirer. “I find all of this sudden interest in the lives of black men by… some elected officials fascinating. They never talk about the real issues black men care about, like getting a job.” Nutter went on to call Kenney’s bill “simplistic.”

You know what’s really simplistic? The fact that the Philadelphia Police Department— which, you know, currently has federal prosecutors investigating allegations of dirty narcotics cops in its midst—is arresting black people four to five times more than it arrests white people for marijuana possession.

Those arrests mean handcuffs and custodial detention for any amount of pot. They mean arrest records lifelong ramifications.

You know what’s also really simplistic? The transparent stupidity of Mayor Nutter right now in trying to distract us from that very important issue.

This isn’t about Jim Kenney. It’s not about next year’s mayor’s race. It’s about a racist practice perpetuated both by American society at large and by a police department with an incredibly checkered history.

I am a 38-year-old married woman. My husband of 18 years is 22 years my senior. I credit my husband for giving me a good life and helping me pursue goals. But my husband is a type A professional, and that has played out in the bedroom.

He has always been disinterested in my pleasure.

If I initiate or get on top, he loses his erection because I am “attacking him.” A few months ago, I told a friend that I had never once received “enthusiastic oral.” She said it made sense that my husband didn’t enjoy doing it because it was a “domination thing” that mostly submissive men enjoy. A little information can be a dangerous thing. I started visiting online domination forums. I hinted about these interests to my husband and got shot down (of course). This is a huge contrast to my new “online friends,” who would love to meet and orally service me. Two of these “sub males” want me to “own” them. This is heady stuff. I have spoken to each of them on the phone and exchanged hundreds of emails. I want to take this into “real life.”

This is the happiest I have been in my entire life, and I want to act on these desires. My husband is my only concern. He is my best friend, and I don’t want to lose that. I feel like I can’t even tell him about the online stuff. He is so rigid. I am stuck.

How do I deal with this?

Don’t Offend My Man Ever On the one hand: a man who demands “rapey” sex on his schedule for 18 years, makes his wife feel bad about her genitals and isn’t open to trying new things is begging to be cheated on. So go ahead and get some enthusiastic oral from those sub males, DOMME; you more than deserve it.

On the other hand: you say your rapey, pussy-disparaging, sex-shaming husband is your best friend (baffling!) and you don’t want to lose him (equally baffling!). And without a doubt, a guy with his retrograde attitudes about sex, gender roles and “wifely duties” would divorce you if he found out you cheated on him—and some days it feels like most people who cheat wind up getting caught—so you probably shouldn’t take this into “real life,” as it could wind up nuking your marriage.

But on the other other hand: your husband sounds like the type of guy who would regard your secret online life as cheating—the hundreds of emails, the phone calls, the hours lurking on domination websites—and divorce you just the same if he found out. So you might as well go ahead and fuck those subs, DOMME, because if you get caught—and you probably will—you’ll be in the same trouble whether or not you got some enthusiastic oral from a sub male in “real life.”

I’m a 25-year-old woman who can only get off lying facedown and rubbing my clit against a pillow. The orgasms are great, but it limits the ways I can get off with my husband. For instance, the only way I can orgasm during sex is being on top and rocking back and forth on him in a similar manner. I’ve never climaxed during oral or hand stimulation, or in any other position. All of that feels nice, but I never climax. My husband has been very understanding and is fine with all of this (he even finds the way I masturbate “hot,” though I hid it for years out of shame), but I really want to be able to do more. I’m also concerned about this being bad for me in the long run, like how the “death grip” is for guys. How can I teach myself to masturbate correctly? I’ve been reading up online and hearing conflicting suggestions—and most of them are for men.

I’m currently abstaining from masturbating for a week in order to become more sensitive and then trying to get off only with my hands while on my back. Some say to take a month off of sex, too? It’s all very stressful, and I’m terrified of never being able to get off the conventional way since I’ve been doing this since childhood.

Can’t Really Use Direction Forgive me in advance for the mixed messages I’m about to send you, CRUD, although I promise they won’t be nearly as mixed as what I just sent DOMME. I’ve advised guys with Death Grip Syndrome— aka Traumatic Masturbatory Syndrome—to keep masturbating but to use a lighter touch and a lot of lube. (Not all of these guys are clenching their dicks too hard; some are rubbing up against pillows like you, CRUD, or even—my personal favorite—sliding their dicks between mattresses and box springs.)

But here’s the difficult part: If they can’t come with the lighter touch and more lube, they don’t get to come. No reverting to a tightly clenched fist after 20 minutes of “trying.” Allow the pressure and frustration to build long enough, and a dick will adapt. A new groove will be carved—but they may have to keep at it for months, plural, not a month, singular.

And go ahead and have sex but, again, no death grip, no pillow, no mattress.

My advice for you is the same as my advice for the boys: If you want to learn how to get off in other ways, masturbate regularly—constantly—but without the pillow. If you don’t come, you don’t come.

Focus on the pleasure you are able to achieve, and give it at least three months. It’s a very good sign that you aren’t entirely dependent on a pillow—you can get off with/on your partner. Most people with TMS aren’t so lucky. And it’s a lot less awkward to grind on your partner pillow-style when you want to come than it is for a guy to shift from penis-invagina sex (PIV) to penis-in-between-mattress-andbox-spring sex (PIBMABS) when he wants to come.

That said, some people with DGS/TMS simply aren’t able to retrain their junk. But you don’t have to live without orgasms for the rest of your life or view yourself as damaged. After giving your junk a chance to adapt, CRUD, you may have to accept that this is how you get off—this is how your junk works, this is how your orgasms happen—and let go of the shame. Enjoy the fingering, enjoy the oral and enjoy the fucking, and then, when you want to get off, maneuver your husband into a position that works for you, and shamelessly grind away. 
