BlackStar Film Festival

In two short years, the BlackStar Film Festival has become a jewel in Philadelphia’s cultural crown, a summer weekend ritual for movie buffs and hungry students with an interest in compelling documentaries, narrative storytelling, screenwriting, composing and experimental filmmaking that captures, explores and celebrates the immense richness and diversity of African American and African life. Sandwiched between a festive ICA opening reception and an awards show at WCL is four days of informative panels, workshops and films—including some wisely-categorized shorts—that’ll delve into everything from the struggles of black LGBT youth and innovative artists’ challenges to the politics of black hair and what happens when a young Jewish woman finds out her father was black. That’s just the tip of the cinematic iceberg.

Saturday’s youth film program promises to resonate, when 10 engaging short films, whose writers and directors are ages 14 through 22, will be shown back to back—then 14-year-old Broadway and film actress Eden Duncan-Smith, who’s got familial ties to Philly, will chat with a selection of the future Spike Lees and Ava DuVernays who made them. Rap fans win big too, with BlackStar’s “Planet Rock: Hip-Hop Shorts” block early Saturday and two key Philly premieres: Friday night’s Til Infinity: Souls of Mischief revisits the seminal Bay Area crew’s mindblowing 1993 debut LP with a bevy of emcees and aficionados, and Sunday’s closer is Time Is Illmatic, the acclaimed documentary focusing on Nas’ landmark 1994 album, one that marked the arrival of one of rap’s most vital voices. Saturday night’s They Die By Dawn, is a story about black bounty hunters in the Wild West, featuring Erykah Badu, Bokeem Woodbine, Giancarlo Esposito and guaranteed heat-bringer Michael K. Williams; a Q&A with director Jeymes Samuel and Williams follows. “We humble, but don’t mistake us for some corny-ass crew,” J-5 collectively proclaim on “If Only You Knew,” a track from their 2002 LP, Power in Numbers. It is excellent West Coast hip-hop that spoke—and still speaks—very clearly to a massive swath of rap fans who were looking for a different kind of L.A. hip-hop. Their self-titled debut came two years after 2Pac’s post-prison comeback, All Eyez On Me, and six years after Dr. Dre’s The Chronic. They spoke to the 17-year-old me that loved the UMCs, Grand Puba, Digable Planets and Pete Rock & CL Smooth. These guys find inspired and brilliantly-studied samples for every record and deftly drop hilarious interludes and voicemails, often reaching Beastie Boys-level of gut-busting laughs.

Arguably, they turned in their two best (2002’s Power In Numbers and 2006’s Feedback) before calling it quits. But Chali 2na, Akil, Zaakir and Marc 7 are ready to rhyme again, and their DJs Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist are set to help em’ turn the party out. They’ve hinted at a live record collected from this big reunion tour, and hey, they just did Glastonbury. These OGs are straight-up heroes. They’re like shamans who helped guide gangster rap back towards the cerebral, jazz-influenced urban artform honed brilliantly by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Sugar Hill Gang and Eric B. & Rakim. // BILL CHENEVERT

Southeast Asian Dragon Boat Festival Yes, we’re already mid-way through summer, but fret not: there are dozens of fun free events for the whole family to enjoy for the next five weeks or so. Saturday’s fourth annual Southeast Asian Dragon Boat Festival is among the well-developed slate of diverse cultural offerings PECO and the Delaware River Waterfront still has on deck this season.

The traditional Water Festival takes place annually on the banks of the Tonle Sap and Mekong Rivers in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the nation’s capital and largest city. Determined boaters and their legions of fans pour into Phnom Penh by the millions for three days each fall, continuing to honor and celebrate customs that date back to the height of the Khmer Empire. This one-day version, founded by the Cambodia-born, South Philly-raised Song Phou, has a clearly defined mission to enrich and encourage future leaders within Philly’s Asian communities, while enlightening other cultures about his people’s glorious heritage. The best part? The community-at-large gets in on the action too, with businesses, organizations, friends and neighbors forming teams that vy to be the fastest dragon boat on the Delaware; this year, there are 21 squads competing.

All on-the-water activity aside, savory Southeast Asian foods will be available all day, and a wide array of musicians, dancers and other performers will fill the Dragon Boat Fest’s entertainment bill. Third Annual Reggae in the Park Two years ago, the Mann Center ushered in a brand new, two-stage festival celebrating the feel-good power of reggae music with headlining performances by genre legends Jimmy Cliff and Beres Hammond, the latter of whom returned to headline the following year. This time around, Philadelphia welcomes back one of its favorite suburban sons in Matisyahu, whose name sits proudly at the top of the bill for the concert’s third edition.

The West Chester native certainly has big shoes to fill, but in the decade it’s been since he released his first album, Matisyahu has proven himself as a reasonably unique force in the game by injecting some Yiddish fervor into his rap-rooted style and letting his Hasidic Judaist faith shine throughout his musical catalogue.

Fresh off the June release of his fifth record, Akeda (Hebrew for “binding”), it’s safe to assume he’ll be receiving a gracious homecoming.

Of course, Matisyahu won’t be alone up there; Veterans like Steel Pulse and Inner Circle—both of which have been around since reggae’s ‘70s glory days—along with more contemporary acts like Morgan Heritage, Sensamotion and Cultureal, can be found on both the main stage and the Crescendo tent. Wow, glam neo-psych rockers Temples play Lollapalooza five days before they play this free show on our very own Delaware River. From Lake Michigan to Morgan’s Pier, this baby band from Kettering, UK will bring psychedelic nu-prog stoner rock to an eager audience. Not necessarily what you’d expect from the R5 teams’ free-via-RSVP series that’ll bring Delorean to the same stage before summer’s over, but their first record, February’s awesome Sun Structures, has gained them loads of fans both big and small. Temples pride themselves on eschewing song structure, and they should—all 12 songs on their 53-minute debut beautifully employ harmonies, rhythm and hallucinatory drugs. Some sound like late ‘90s-era Fatboy Slim and some like The Horrors’ first joint.

They’re more Byrds than Beatles. They’ve already opened for the Stones. They’d complement Tame Impala and Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti nicely in some weird gothic clouded haze. This is a good band—right there with outfits of the last year or two who pushed song envelopes with new records and bend genres blithely and easily: Foxygen, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Thee Silver Mt. Zion’s crew. Just think: James Edward Bagshaw and Thomas Edward James Walmsley were frustrated young post-grad Brit millenials who started fucking around with bedroom recordings, and, maybe a year later, they’re darling big-haired weirdos who preach mysticism and 12-string guitar. It’s the stuff of which dreams are made. // B.C.

The Philadelphia Wooden Boat Factory helps city kids take the helm of their own abilities.

It’ll take several of the kids working at once: two on the inside of the boat, one on the outside.

Castro shows them each step, demonstrating in the air how the copper rivet pieces fit together, how the drill should be angled, when to use the hammer, where the person holding the stop should be.

His crew, looking on in their school uniforms, aren’t entirely convinced. “Would you say this process is scientifically accurate?” one pipes up, adjusting her glasses.

Castro shrugs and gives a patient smile. “It’s worked on boats for centuries. But you give it a shot—see if it works.”

Somewhat reassured by the historical tradition, if not the engineering details, the five young boat builders set to work. There’s a learning curve as they try each task, swapping off roles, each trying to find what best suits. One girl, faced with clipping excess wire from the rivet, demurs, saying she doesn’t have the strength and a boy should do it. After pounding in a couple of rivets, however, she catches the rhythm, and starts clipping off the wire herself.

When they’re done, the rivets are loose. So are the boat’s ribs, which were steamed and bent into place by another group of students. The kids will have to redo some of this work if the vessel is to be river-worthy by launch day later this summer. But in the face of one girl awakening to her own sense of power, fixing a few rivets is such a small thing.

Suffice it to say, boats are not the only thing the Philadelphia Wooden Boat Factory is interested in building.

The Wooden Boat Factory, started in 1996, aims to give economically disadvantaged teenagers opportunities to develop not only practical skills but also their sense of self.

The group offers two programs: Boat Build & Sail and Community Row Riverguides. Build & Sail teaches kids hands-on boatbuilding and sailing, while Riverguides is focused on ecology, offering a chance to learn about the Delaware River and its environment. Both are based around an apprenticeship model, with the students work-

ing closely with the staff and instructors. The students come from Marianna Bracetti Academy, Frankford High School, Carver High School and Constitution High School.

The Factory’s executive director, Brett Hart, grew up only a few blocks from the organization’s Frankford location inside the old Globe Dye Works building; he’s an experienced sailor, with the anchor tattoo to prove it. “We consider ourselves to be a strength-based program,” he says, “which means we’re finding opportunities for young people to make contributions... It’s about having young people become owners of their own processes of change—to help them figure out the solutions to their own problems.”

That approach to self-directed experience has earned the Wooden Boat Factory recognition from the Susan Crown Exchange, a Chicago-based education philanthropy. The Factory recently won $100,000 as part of the SCE’s Social and Emotional Learning Challenge; over the next 18 months, the group will be working with Detroit’s Weikart Center for Youth Program Policy. Weikart will evaluate the Philadelphia program, looking for commonalities between it and seven other groups

that also received the award. SCE’s goal is to create a “field guide” to help inform future organizations in the best practices in social and emotional learning; it’s a big deal for the Wooden Boat Factory to be involved.

For Castro, the Factory’s artist in residence, the therapeutic qualities of building boats came to him years ago, working with Camden Maritime Museum. “Kids in Camden, the water kind of made them an island,” he says. “They didn’t cross the bridge into Philly, they weren’t coming over into South Street on a Friday. And then, on the other side, the Cooper River kind of separated them from Collingswood, Haddonfield and the nicer suburbs. I’d never put that together that the water was something that separated them.”

A boat, he realized, offered kids in that position a new kind of freedom. “It can take you somewhere that you can’t get to by walking or riding your bike, or catching the bus, or taking the train,” he says. “It can take you somewhere else.”

The backbone of the Wooden Boat Facto-

ry’s philosophy—the keel, if you will, around which the hull is built—is the idea of “fail-

ing well.” Most teenagers’ experiences with failure come through an academic setting, where a failing grade is seen as catastrophic and irreparable. The Factory, Hart explains, takes a more positive, realistic approach: Doing something wrong is how you learn how important it is to do it right.

He remembers one young woman who had crafted a sailboat’s coaming—the raised edging around the place where you sit. She’d taken great care in shaping and finishing the wood to fit the deck. The trick was that this piece of wood was not going to be painted, it was going to be varnished—which meant if she left any imperfections, the varnish would make them stand out, clear as day.

“She was sanding it and sanding it,” Hart says. “And she came to me said, ‘Brett, am I done sanding?’ I get this question all the time: ‘Am I done? Am I done?’… So I said, ‘This is your piece, on your boat. You have to decide. Are you happy with it?’ Now, I know she doesn’t have any experience to draw on. She’s like ‘Well—umm—maybe not.” So she sands it further and sands it further, and she keeps bringing it to me and I size it up, and I can see the scratches that are going against the grain.

I tell her, at some point you’re going to have to make a decision.”

She decided to varnish it, and the consequences of her impatience showed; the scratches were clearly visible.

“Her failure was that she varnished a piece of wood that went on the boat that didn’t have a ‘yacht standard’ to it,” Hart says. “But in actuality, she got a chance, through reflection, to look at it and say, ‘Geez, now I get why I should have spent the extra hour to get this done right.’ Without failing at something, there’s not the opportunity to learn. It’s not what we’re going to tell you as a student, because that’s—pfffft.” Hart flashes a hand over his head. “That’s gone. You have to fail.“ Victoria Guidi agrees. “It’s okay,” the Factory’s program director tells kids, bringing a calm, Zen-like vibe to the often chaotic workshop. “Try again.” Guidi’s been sailing all of her life. Like Castro, she gives the students the right tools, makes sure they’re shown the right methods—but is careful to see them take charge of their own work. When this semester’s over, she wants these kids to sail on boats they built themselves, not ones she built for them.

On launch day, June 21, all four boats are indeed ready.

Everyone is gathered on the Frankford Arsenal boat ramp, hunkered down next to the Dietz and Watson factory on Tacony Street; it’s a public space that’s often overlooked amid its industrial surroundings.

The motorboat is already in the river, bobbing nicely. The three sailboats, Purple Lady, Atlas and About Time—that last one took a bit longer to complete than expected—sit nearby on the shore, awaiting their moment to slide into the Delaware.

The students strut around them, proud of their accomplishments. Alquimides “Kimo” Merced shows off the boats to his family; he’s worked on all of them and was instrumental in getting the motorboat done in time for the launch. His mother is frankly

amazed. “I’m just so proud,” she says. And then, without missing a beat: “Does anyone need suntan lotion?”

Hart calls all the families and friends together to christen the motorboat; he hands Cintron, Kimo and another students ceremonial cups of Delaware River water. Each speaks a few brief words before dumping the water on the ships’ hulls, recollecting the journey it took them to reach this point of embarkation.

Kimo stands next to Purple Lady and reads his prepared speech solemnly off his phone: “We just have to try and never give up, no matter what trials we face.”

The reflective moment does not last long.

Because these kids cannot wait to get those boats out: “Hurry up! Get a lifejacket! Let’s go!”

They line up along the dock, humming with eager energy inside their lifejackets.

Guidi and Cintron get the sailboats into the water, and Castro reverses the motorboat out from the dock—only to find that the brandnew motor won’t shift back out of reverse.

The boat scoots backwards along the river while Castro and McGettigan work to figure out the problem. As it turns out, the motor is fine; it’s just not connected properly to the steering column in the center of the boat. A few makeshift adjustments and the motorboat starts tearing along the Delaware, just as it was meant to. Until, at least, shifting the motor again causes it to cut out completely.

It’s not an unfixable problem, and Castro and McGettigen manage to get the boat to get back to the dock under its own power.

Meanwhile, the students discover the challenges that still face them in dealing with their sailboats: tangled sails, for instance. Unsteady masts. The lack of a strong wind means that the Delaware’s current controls the boat more than the sail does.

But none of that really matters.

Some of these issues will be corrected before the boats go out again—Guidi says she’s already got an idea how to fix the masts before she’s gotten out of the boat—and others, like the wind, are simply a part of sailing.

One way or the other, the students who’ve spent the past months working devotedly at the Wooden Boat Factory are savoring their reward: They’re out on the water, steering a craft they built.

Was the launch without failure? Not in the least. But they seem to agree it was an overwhelming success. n

Nobody understands that better than Andrew Cintron, the group’s program assistant. Cintron was a student at El Centro De Estudiante, an alternative high school in Kensington, when he first took part in Boat Builders a few years ago. His apprenticeship at the Wooden Boat Factory motivated him to him to finish school—and now his experience makes him an invaluable member of the staff.

As his soft voice spurs on the kids’ work turning raw materials into real, river-going vehicles, the boatbuilding process utterly consumes the two vast rooms that currently comprise the Wooden Boat Factory’s space.

That will change soon, though: Patrick McGettigan, the group’s science education director, can barely contain his glee as he shows off the recently completed laboratory area that will see use as part of their Riverguides program.

Excited as McGettigan is about the lab, though, he’s even more excited about the simple prospect of getting onto the water.

“It was almost an escape,” he says, from the daily life of growing up in Philadelphia— “being able to get to a location that was a little more isolated.”

In addition to the two sailboats the Factory kids built over the spring and one still on hand from the previous autumn, McGettigan, Castro and a handful of dedicated students have also been working on a motorboat. This will be McGettigan’s “baby,” according to Castro, functioning both as a mobile education laboratory and as a rescue craft should anything happen to the rowboats.

The motorboat’s construction started later than the other crafts’, and it’s a much more complex design. With only a few days to go to the end-of-semester launch, it’s unclear whether the boat will be finished in time. One of the sailboats, too, is not quite ready to go.

But Castro and Guidi seem confident. The summer launch has been what everyone has been working toward. No way things are going to fall short now.

t’s easy to forget just how transporting a great guacamole can be. And, indeed, who could blame those of us who fall into the trap of brushing it off once in a while: There are just so many lousy ones out there.

I remember one particularly reviled suburban haunt’s guac at a family gathering a few years ago, and just the thought of its stabilizer-jiggling heft, its petulant refusal to turn even the slightest shade of brown despite the fact that we were eating outside in the summertime, is enough to make me shudder, and cringe, and reach for happier thoughts, even all these years later.

Cafe Ynez, however, gets it just right: Roughmashed with the perfect amount of lime (i.e.: mucho), onions, tomatoes and cilantro, it’s a study in the seemingly disproportionate joys of simplicity and balance.

There’s a lot of that here, and from 8am– 8pm weekdays and 9am–4pm on the weekends, it serves up the kind of memorable pleasures that I’m confident will make it a standby in the neighborhood. (In addition to their allday menu, there’s plenty on offer for brunch and breakfast, too.)

Moist rotisserie chicken arrives beneath cracker-crisp, mahogany-toned skin. It’s also perfumed with cinnamon among its secret blend of 12 herbs and spices, an ingenious addition that raises the stakes substantially.

Sunset-colored rice reposes next to silky frijoles fritos toned up with cumin, and the duo is like some sort of perfect Mexican yin-yang composition. Escabeche didn’t shy away from

a particularly citrus-bright vinaigrette and was all the better for it. Homemade, freshfruit margarita mixes change every three days maximum and are well worth toting along a bottle of tequila to splash into them. Or rum, for that matter, which we accidentally did; no matter, it was delicious added to the mangograpefruit mix regardless.

The elote, however, could have used more acid, the better to liven it up and frame the roastier kernels of corn. And the carnitas cemitas, an excellent pulled pork sandwich whose center of gravity was the deeply developed flavor of the flesh itself, was done no favors with a vaguely industrial-seeming tomato slice, especially in this season of otherwise stellar ones. But that was quickly forgotten anyway: We removed that slice and proceeded to make quick work of the sandwich—and were kind of sad when it was finished.

Like so much else here under the supervision of executive chef JC Piña—who’s also still executive chef at Jet Wine Bar—and owners Jill Weber and Evan Malone, it’s worth treating yourself to. Even if you’re not from the neighborhood, Cafe Ynez is worth a visit. And then another. 

A

ri Rubin knows how to tell a good story. Like the time he met a would-be coke dealer at Garage who hit on his girlfriend then offered he and the rest of Minka an invitation to play a rooftop gig that ended up set in the dude’s kitchen for about 30 hipsters who actively ignored them—plus, they never got paid. (“Everybody in the band was pretty annoyed with me,” Rubin admits.) And the time Minka opened for Andrew W.K., and they got booed by what Rubin describes as “maybe 100 male virgins.” Plus the time he side-gigged for Opera Delaware in Wilmington at a party they call “Brandywine in Black,” playing cocktail music like “Fly Me to the Moon.” A girl came up to him and asked if he was in Minka because she’d seen them open for the Protomen at The Note. She recognized his hair.

“My haircut gets haters from all corners,” Rubin admits confidently. “I dig it.”

Rubin’s coif and corresponding M. Bison hat are a striking feature in the video Minka made for “Justice,” an upbeat and synth-friendly party track. They obviously enjoyed the hell out of its making— and why wouldn’t they? It’s basically a result of cameras following them one night as they hedonistically rip through a laundry list of Philly bars. The Trestle Inn was the only one I could identify, but Rubin laughingly recalled the rest of their itinerary: The Fire, National Mechanics, The Raven Lounge, even Pulse on Sansom. Minka’s very first real gig was at The Fire in the winter of 2012, and, since then it seems, Rubin’s “any-gig-is-a-good-gig” attitude has earned them a respectable following. “If we convert at least 10 people” each goround, he says, “we’ll be good.”

Minka’s picking up steam more than ever these days. The Republican, the five-piece’s second EP, dropped Tuesday, and they’ve got a nice list of upcoming local dates: Ortlieb’s tonight, Night Market Lancaster Avenue on Aug. 14, and early next month, they’re turning Boot and Saddle into a skuzzy-sexfest record-release soiree.

Rubin doesn’t sugarcoat what he does as its frontman: He screams, and he makes fairly grotesque sexually-charged thrusts and gestures. Lots of folk were feeling it, he reports, on Minka’s spring road-trip from North Carolina up to Boston. “I think people were digging the sexual energy, and some people even loved the show,” he says. “It went pretty well, no disasters.” On the road, they listened to tons of Prince and Parliament and played the live recording of the Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense on repeat.

Minka began under rather peculiar circumstances: The whole band’s from the area, mostly the ‘burbs—Ardmore, Cherry Hill,

West Chester, that kind of thing—but Rubin and guitarist Ian Brick met on a reggae tour on which the former was playing keys. They took their initiative to his basement back in 2009-2010, and it snowballed from there. “We started getting together once a week to get something poured out of us, and after about a year of that, we got the rest of the line-up together through various circles,” Rubin says.

They started out playing the songs the two created together, but now, with Minka’s other members—keyboardist Paul Sipio, bass player Joe Flack and drummer Max Perla—they write collectively.

Their self-titled EP debuted to widespread acclaim last year, and this new one was cut live in one day in the A Room at MilkBoy Studio’s space next to the Electric Factory.

“It was dope,” Rubin says. “Larry Gold rolled through just as I was doin’ the falsetto in that section of ‘Jackson Pollock,’ and he was like ‘Whoa, pretty wild.”” Rubin took it as high praise. “That’s a nice compliment.”

“Pollock,” by the way, is another recent, super-fly Minka video that Rubin’s really proud of, and it hit YouTube this month. For it, they converted an abandoned room into a white space, brought in all kinds of crappy yard-sale and vintage-store art and destroyed it with sledgehammers, paint and and paintguns. He’s also clearly pumped about the new one they just wrapped for “Let’s Fuck,” in which they recreate a blaxploitation film flush with long, low cars and superfreaks as villains and cops. “The assassin is 6’8”, Rubin says, “and the white cop is this totally juiced-up dude, and he was staying at my house during the filming.” When he casually mentioned performance-enhancing drugs in pro baseball, the muscle man tellingly declared, like in life, “everything in moderation.” Including, apparently, moderation.

Now, what about the name of this new Minka record? They’re not actually referring to the political party, are they? Not at all. In fact, they’re shouting out one of the seediest, darkest underbelly night spots in Philadelphia: Snyder Avenue’s super-special, latenight stripper-employing The Republican. Rubin lives near 10th and Market streets, not far from Connie’s Ric Rac, where he met his girlfriend. On that fateful night—and he wasn’t sure if he should admit it to PW for fear of retribution—she suggested they end the night at The Republican.

Look, Learn, Then Act Carolyn Cohen’s Oblivious puts abuse up front and in your face.

s much as society, culture and technology have advanced over the years, there are still some horrific statistics that illustrate the inhumane treatment of women and children across the globe: 1.2 million children trafficked every year. 27 million slaves. 35 percent of women subject to abuse. 100 million street children. And one billion children living in poverty. Those harrowing figures are not only emblazoned onto the back of postcards displaying Philadelphia-based artist Carolyn Cohen’s wondrous work; they’ve bled into her psyche, inspiring the haunting collection of artworks she’s created since January dubbed Oblivious, meant to reawaken hearts and minds to the realities of far too many of society’s most vulnerable and desperate citizens. It debuts Friday at Old City’s Muse Gallery.

Utilizing textile mediums, photography and watercolors, Cohen’s look at rampant violent acts of physical and sexual abuse and the suffering left in their wake is also a means to help its victims: Proceeds from all sales of her on-paper art will benefit the non-profit organization Camfed, which aims to educate and empower young women in parts of Africa where many of these atrocities take place. “If there is a key to ending violence and poverty,” she says, “it is through education.”

The festival will welcome back returning students, as well as introduce new students to the tastes and sounds of the city.

followed by a story of a young woman in Texas who was expelled from her school for lewd behavior, the behavior being reporting her own rape. I felt a sense of despair and hopelessness—and helplessness—come over me as I listened. I felt, and I do feel, that in certain places, there is a war, almost, against women, against children and certainly against the LGBT community. That afternoon, I knew that I needed to do something, to protest, but I did not know how. I could send another check to Save the Children or Amnesty, but there was a certain hollowness to this. So I decided to make a stand through my art; to try to give faces to those I had been hearing about, those who are completely powerless.

The exhibit consists of small series of works. One series portrays women who have been scarred by acid. Another series is about child abuse; another is about the trafficking of women and children, and another one honors the LGBT community. My hope is that people will come to see the art and leave with a little bit more knowledge about what is happening in the world today and how to get involved in supporting people who need support.

What projects do you have in store for the future?

I am not quite sure what my next exhibition will be like, although I know that whatever it is, it will have a social justice component to it.

Putting together this exhibit has been exhausting. It has also been depressing, and even demoralizing, to educate myself and then create works of art about oppressed and abused people. The next actual work of art I am planning is a quilt which will juxtapose the lives of middle- and upper-class Americans with those who make things for said Americans: the sweat shop workers and child laborers.  Through Sun., Aug. 31. Oblivious sheds light on abuse here and around the world.

What led to that as a focus?

Originally, my idea for this exhibition was something quite different: It was to be all photography, exploring contemporary notions of feminine beauty. However, I was listening to NPR one afternoon in early January as I was driving home from my parents’ home in upstate NY—a six-hour drive. I listened to a story of a woman in Bengal who was gang-raped, twice, and then set on fire. This was

What mediums do you enjoy using to convey your messages?

This current show consists of batiks and paintings. Batiks are textiles created by dying over a wax resist; the areas that are waxed do not take the dye. In the end, the wax is removed, leaving a work of art with multiple layers of color. I then hand-embroider each work in order to accentuate certain parts. The paintings are mostly watercolor. This is a very new medium for me, and I found that I loved the immediacy of the process. Unlike batik, which can take hours or days, a watercolor painting can be done in a matter of minutes.

PW: How long have you been a professional artist? Are you formally trained or self-taught?

CAROLYN COHEN: I feel like I have been an artist for practically my whole life; some of my earliest memories are of drawing and painting and making things. Because art was always my passion, it seemed natural that I would major in art in college, and then go on to get an MFA in painting. This I did at the University of Pennsylvania, and for me, it was both a wonderful experience and a waste of time. It was a wonderful experience, in that I was able to devote my time to making art; however, some of the faculty at that time was less interested in teaching than they were in pontificating about their own artwork.

After graduating, I actually became interested in self-taught artists, and I began experimenting on my own with different media. I tried to forget the things I had been told in art school and focus on what was in my head and my heart. I love the almost brutal, “un-beautiful”quality that many self-taught or outsider artists possess. I also became very interested in African art and masks, which I began collecting on a very small scale.

Another artist who influenced me greatly was Leon Golub. He created huge paintings that were very violent in nature, yet his painting technique of creating layers of scraped paint was very beautiful, and I liked that juxtaposition of violence and beauty.

Guardians of the Galaxy Comic book-movie juggernaut Marvel Studios is on such a roll, it’s tackling its more obscure properties, hoping to hit franchise gold. Enter Guardians of the Galaxy, a zany big-budget action flick that feels positively frothy. The movie never quite shakes the sense of being polished via focus group, but it establishes a madcap sandbox of its own.

Styled around a mixtape as much as anything else, Guardians uses its obstacle-course plot to drag its ensemble of misfits into a reluctant alliance. The cast’s anchored by a solid, likely starmaking turn from Chris Pratt, whose Peter Quill manages enough leading-man gravity and kindness to balance his shtick. Zoe Saldana also delivers as tortured turncoat Gamora, and CGI Groot (Vin Diesel) tugs the requisite heartstrings. They’re not all winners: Lee Pace is particularly adrift, caught in the film’s overarching setup (courtesy of screenwriters Nicole Perlman and James Gunn), which involves the threat of planetary genocide sitting alongside all the banter about as awkwardly as you’d imagine.

But there’s enough liveliness in the cast and director Gunn’s brisk pacing that, at its best, the movie’s energy emulates the go-for-it glee of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

At its worst—when everything starts to feel a little too packaged, the smash cuts a little too frequent—you can admire the scenery. One of the few superhero movies to earn its 3D, Guardians delivers glittering, expansive interstellar vistas framed with all the wonder of a planetarium show, plus several suitably-detailed set pieces from far-off worlds. The vast and starry scope helps immensely in justifying the pinball-game plot twists; who’d mind recrossing the galaxy when it looks like this? And in presenting this galaxy ripe for exploration, and this bickering, bighearted crew for the job, Guardians of the Galaxy has built just the playground franchise it wanted to. Code Black Early in Code Black, a hospital tech quietly moves in behind a line of doctors, mopping up the blood of a patient who’s died. It’s an unavoidable symbol, and in the current climate of American health care, it’s no surprise that Code Black—directed by Dr. Ryan McGarry, a former physician at L.A. County—feels like a personal call to arms.

At first, the documentary chronicles the shift in the dynamics of the emergency room of L.A. County Hospital after it moves to a new building and leaves behind the legendary trauma center of C Booth, a cramped cubicle with a death rate high enough to make it, foot for foot, the deadliest space in America. But with the demands of red tape and hopeless crowds, Code Black tackles what it means to be a public hospital at a crossroads in the American health care system. The ER serves as primary care for so many that overwhelming numbers can prevent efficient or even common-sense care. Amid enthusiastic doctors, some mentions of privacy requirements “killing the relationship” feel brushed aside, especially since the opinion isn’t universal—a balance neatly struck by editor and writer Joshua Altman. But there’s no denying the evocative waiting-room shots—and in a summer flush with horror films, the most chilling movie moment might be hearing patient wait times top out at 24 hours as someone scrolls through patients whose potentially life-threatening triage has become an overcrowded spreadsheet.

This film offers no easy answers. Instead, it uses its small scale for frustrated glimpses of a situation that’s reached a tipping point. “Code black” is hospital terminology for a critical capacity of patients; it’s also, McGarry points out, the state of America’s health care crisis. His lingering question is equally clear: What will we do about it? (G.V.)

A Feel-Good Franchise Everything is awesome in Marvel’s genuinely fun, reference-laden comic thrill ride, Guardians of the Galaxy.

T

he Marvel Cinematic Universe, in its continuing quest to win the hearts of every possible fan from now through at least 2028, knows its biggest challenge, besides pacing out franchise installments, is controlling the mood of the room. Marvel suffered a few misfires in early How to Assemble a Franchise kits—the X-Men got so tangled, the reboot had to go back to the ‘60s and start from scratch, and the Fantastic Four fell on its face twice.

But Marvel’s perfected its methods, and Guardians of the Galaxy is the product of a studio that knows exactly what it’s doing. This juggernaut most recently released Captain America 2, a dash of relatively grim intrigue steeped in Marvel movie mythology. It only makes sense that their followup is Guardians, a flick so self-aware that it ends up being less a story in its own right than a story about the franchise movie experience itself.

It’s a clever move for a brand as ubiquitous as Marvel has become; letting the audience in on the joke worked remarkably well for The Avengers. But subverting expectations after three relevant solo franchises were off the ground is a much easier task than building in-jokes from the starting line. Guardians knows it. In the hands of screenwriter Nicole Perlman and writer/director James Gunn, it instead builds jokes on expectations about movie franchises. The functional plot hinges on such a tertiary Macguffin that spacefaring earthling Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) namechecks The Maltese Falcon in disbelief. It’s a movie that tweaks every movie that’s come before it—careful plans for prison breaks implode on two fronts, bold statements are quickly negated, and everyone gets a moment to explain the terrible circumstances that have led to their current vendettas against the bad guy. (That bad guy would be Ronan the Accuser, played by Lee Pace, apparently to fill the Lackadaisical Boat-Purchasing Marvel Villain square in a game of Franchise Bingo he’s desperately playing with Hugo Weaving.)

Going full meta is a thin line to walk; you could end up with the glory of Galaxy Quest or stumble into becoming Not Another Teen Movie. Turns out that so much of Guardians references other franchise-starting ensemble actioners that it leapfrogs The Avengers and ends up The Lego Movie of the Marvel franchise, right down to the catchy meta tunes. (Lego had the hyper-catchy “Everything is Awesome,” while Guardians makes do with an easy-listening mixtape that becomes a plot device.) And the only dynamic of which each movie seems unaware is also shared: the notable, hyper-competent woman who starts out a questready fighter but fizzles into arm candy, which isn’t a proud parallel, but both buy into it wholesale. Guardians is still firmly a Marvel movie, rife with supporting characters set up for later appearances and cosplay-ready costume shots, but it’s a Marvel movie about the fun of Marvel movies, drawing attention to the sandbox it’s playing in, as aware of its product as the movie about Bricksburg.

Guardians of the Galaxy isn’t without moments of genuine fun: Pratt nails the tone scene-to-scene, no small task when you’re trying to balance slapstick and planetary extinction, and the rest of the cast wrings out every beat of comic timing they can come by. But you only get so many callbacks to callbacks before your movie turns into an echo chamber, and humor and heroism alike never quite get out from under the shadow of the franchise’s metaarchitecture. In the end, though, Guardians of the Galaxy is somewhat immune to rubrics of quality. It’s such a specialized product, it was almost bound to be appealing to those who are expected to see it, and Marvel’s studios have so much confidence in it that the release date for the sequel was announced at last week’s Comic Con—a week before this one ever hit theaters. And why wouldn’t there be a sequel? You’re likely going to love this one; they’ve made sure everything is awesome. 

ou’re well aware that you need to work out. You know it’s good for you: It keeps your body right and your mind clear, and it increases the likelihood you’ll get to humblebrag about how annoying it is to get carded well into your thirties. But hey, money’s tight, gym memberships are expensive, and you’re a resourceful DIY urbanite. So let’s talk about turning the city itself into a gym.

Old-school jogging. Every year, thousands of tourists snap selfies next to the Rocky statue. Without context, a strange visitor from another planet would think our city must have been founded by a very jacked man with oversized kitten paws. But inspired by fiction or not, the statue is a testament to hard work and no-frills urban workouts that are very real: Philly has nearly 100 miles of running trails, and you don’t have to live in Fairmount to take advantage. From the Art Museum steps, head west if you want to put yourself on a serious incline; head north if you want just a little slope; stay in Center City if you feel like inhaling a lot of exhaust and stopping every single block to wait for traffic. (Head southwest if you’re motivated by periodic gunshots and want to avoid the distraction of beautiful scenery.)

In the park. City parks have all the makings of a workout as productive as any gym’s, plus the added excitement of screaming children and people staring at you. Use strangers as motivation: Pretend you’re competing in front of the live audience on Ninja Warrior. There’s usually plenty of open grassy space for yoga and martial-arts sparring. Benches can be used for pushups both incline (hands on bench, feet on ground) and decline (feet on bench, hands on ground); for tricep dips (hands on bench behind you, bend and straighten the elbows to lift and lower your body); and for quick, high-knee toe-taps. Monkey bars are great for pull-ups, hanging upside-down for sit-ups and a variety of stretches.

Get a $20 resistance band, and it’s practically a full TRX set up. I’m not to get into the details of how to do those things and how many reps you should do; this isn’t Self magazine, I don’t have the space, and I have literally no interest in which colorful purses are hot this season. Look it up.

In your tiny-ass apartment. One of the beautiful things about Philadelphia is how damn reasonable housing prices are. For more space per dollar elsewhere, you’re going have to live in some terribly dull place overflowing with SUVs— like Arlington, Texas, where exercise consists of walking to and from parking lots while drinking soda and calling it “Coke” even if it’s not. Anyway: Whether you’re sharing a six-bedroom in University City or rocking an Old City loft in what used to be a factory, there are days you can’t get outside to work out. So keep a Pilates mat on hand—you can get one for cheap at Marshall’s—’cause it’s good for doing tons of core work and planks, and it allows you the luxury of not having to think about how you should really clean your floor more often.

Have a private dance party; it’ll be infinitely better than shaking it at the club, since all the cardio won’t be cancelled out by Jameson, and there’s no pressure to wear stilettos.

I’m sure everyone in your building is down with your music, so crank it up. You need very little space for the two most important exercises: squats and pushups. They’re the most efficient movements because they work a number of major muscle groups simultaneously. Get some pointers from a professional on form for both of these since there’s a good chance you’re doing it weirdly, and your PE teacher didn’t love you enough to correct you.

All day, every damn day. Consider biking or walking to work. If you plan for the time and clothing considerations— i.e., wear a backpack and put your work attire in it to avoid being a sweaty mess—those miles add up quickly. Skip the elevator and escalator, and switch out your office chair with a yoga ball. Take walks around the building during breaks; physically visit coworkers instead of emailing; offer to be the one who fetches coffee for the office. Exercise is perfectly valid whether done in a single session or spaced throughout the day, and all these small steps raise general kinesthetic awareness, so your body’s default state is one of movement rather than sedentariness. The people who burn the most calories in a day are not necessarily the ones who hit the gym, but the ones who fidget and simply never stop moving.

Finally: The best workout is the one you enjoy enough to stick with long-term. Do whatever it is that you like doing, and get better at it. Otherwise, what’s the point? 

THE UNCOMFORTABLE WHOLE

Well, There’s That ‘Good Guy’ A local lunatic opened fire in his psychiatrist’s office. The psychiatrist fired back.

It saved lives. Technically, it was against hospital policy.

L

ast week, mental patient Richard Plotts walked onto the Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital campus in suburban Philadelphia for an appointment scheduled with his psychiatrist, Lee Silverman. Police say that after arriving early for his meeting, Plotts confronted Silverman and a case worker at the hospital, Theresa Hunt.

Plotts reportedly shot Hunt right in the head. She died.

Not emphasized by many media outlets, however, is the fact that Plotts’ psychiatrist returned fire. Dr. Silverman had a concealed carry permit, and police say he was able to fire off three rounds, hitting Plotts, who still managed to graze Silverman with a bullet whizzing by the doctor’s head.

A worker in the same building helped subdue Plotts after Silverman hit him thrice, twice in the torso and once in the arm. Apparently, Plotts, who has a lengthy, documented history of mental illness, including having been involuntarily committed, didn’t let that get in the way of his unhinged desire to exercise his Second Amendment rights.

Reportedly, one possible trigger for Plotts’ aggression might have been his objection to a particular policy of the hospital. Specifically, police say that Plotts “took offense to the issue that there were signs posted” on the campus that it “was a gun-free zone.”

Obviously, and sadly, the campus was not, in reality, a literal gun-free zone. After all, were it such a hypothetical, magical place, Plotts wouldn’t have been able to open fire in the first place. As soon as he walked onto the hospital’s campus, he would have been rendered inert by the laws of physics neutralizing the gun he allegedly had on his person. That, of course, didn’t happen. Whatever safety any institution’s posted “gun-free zone” signs might seek to encourage, such signs are proscriptive, not descriptive.

That being the case, let’s acknowledge: Had Dr. Silverman followed the instructions of the “gun-free zone” signs himself, it’s possible—maybe even likely—that he would be dead today. That policy dictates that only on-duty law enforcement and security personnel are allowed to carry firearms on campus. Silverman violated the policy, discreetly carrying his legally registered firearm for self-protection. He didn’t cause a fuss about it; he concealed it as the law allows so as to not cause alarm; and he only drew it in self-defense. He never brandished it to make a point; he never bragged or swaggered about with it on his hip, either. He simply acted like a responsibly armed American.

Basically, Silverman is the type of gun owner for whom the Second Amendment exists.

As such, he’s vastly different than the slack-jawed yokels who get off on carrying AK-47s around parking lots as they upload pictures of themselves to their Facebook pages.

Those who abuse their Second Amendment rights, including members of the so-called “open carry” movement, jeopardize much more than they protect: Not only do they give liberals an excuse to hate guns more, but they also cause undue alarm and terror in a great many people for no reason whatsoever.

Still, there’s something about the idea of “gun-free zone” policies that bothers me. It basically tells people that they need to check their constitutional rights at the door— along with the security those rights are supposed to safeguard.

The unintended consequence of liberal vitriol and handwringing against the Second Amendment is that millions of other Americans—some genuinely concerned, others mentally ill—will view it as an outright assault on their freedoms.

It’s why pro-gun types have been able to mischaracterize sensible measures, like magazine limits, as unacceptable infringements on liberty. They’re not.

Thanks to years and years of political polarization and

As I’ve said before: Guns do, in fact, kill people.

Part of the tradeoff for American freedom, though, is the reality of crime and death. Our responsibility as a society is to find a balance between the potential for tragedy and freedom: How much death are we as a nation willing to accept in exchange for freedom?

For instance, police say that Plotts’ violence was limited by the fact that he was firing a revolver. Had he had a semiautomatic rifle, for instance, with a large clip, who knows what

The right bears a great deal of responsibility for this foray into lunatic, activist mouth-breathing. Still, the left is not without its small measure of responsibility into polarization today regarding gun rights.

Probably the most insufferably arrogant major liberal website, Salon, has been waging an assault against the American right to bear arms for some time now. They’ve recently taken to calling private gun ownership a “constitutional fraud.”

When you start looking at the overall picture of the liberal response to guns in America, you begin to see why conservatives end up on such a hair-trigger about any perceived infringement on their rights.

Not only does the left exploit human tragedy, just like the right does, to make smug political points, but it also outright disagrees with federal law, Supreme Court precedent and the U.S. Constitution itself. Most of the time, when you see a bunch of hashtag activists, right or left, reading tea leaves into what the so-called founding fathers intended, what you’re looking at are a bunch of folks with no real leg to stand on.

That’s because it is.

Now, there’s no reason Plotts should have owned a gun based upon his history. Somehow, though, he found a way.

People in a free society are always going to find a way to do something if they really set their mind to it, no matter how crazy or terrible that goal might be. Because of this inevitability—and the fact that millions of guns are in America and won’t ever go away—we absolutely must not attempt to curtail legal handgun ownership.

Doesn’t mean those guns shouldn’t be subject to limits, though.

Were it not for legally-registered concealed handguns, a great many people in this country would be in danger. This case is a good example. Are we supposed to tell a doctor whose work involves the treatment of a convicted felon with a violent history that he isn’t allowed to take legal measures to protect himself from danger? Would we, as a society, prefer to see Dr. Silverman cowering and trying to reason with the lunatic firing at him?

There’s no easy answer. That’s how can you tell “Guns are evil” isn’t the answer. Because that is an easy answer.

And just like a gun-free zone, that’s not a thing that really exists. 

To stave off frustration and/or selfconsciousness, constantly remind yourself that new things you both enjoy will be incorporated into your routine. And when things that work for you both join the ranks of the tried-and-true, you’ll be able to come while you’re doing them. This is a problem that solves itself. And remember: You don’t have to stop doing the shit that works. Let’s say you try something new on Wednesday night—new kink, new locale, new hole—and you enjoy yourself but you don’t come. So the next time you have sex, stick to the “tried-and-true” stuff that gets you there.
