Spring to Attention Regarding J. Cooper Robb’s review of Mazeppa Production’s staging of “Spring Awakening”: This was a great show and I will definitely see it again. I was especially impressed with Zach Kononov, who played Otto. Even though he was just part of the ensemble, he had a beautiful and strong voice and was always energetic and animated. Definitely an actor worth watching for in the future. Congrats to Mazeppa on a job well done!

I loved, loved, loved this production. It was so great to see this musical completely re-invented and outside of the box. The 1950’s theme fit the sexual oppression that the characters suffer from and I felt so moved after the show. I completely agree the adults and ensemble steal the show. Mazeppa Productions hit it out of the park! My only complaints were Moritz and Wendla.

His singing was extremely screechy/whiney—I had a difficult time enjoying my favorite songs. The actress who played Wendla was way too soft and I had to strain to hear her (mind you, the theatre is extremely small). She seemed very weak and didn’t have the raw sexual energy you expect to see from the character.

I would rather see the Killers than the entire XPoNential Festival. I was actually interested to see the points made for this argument, but was frustrated to see lame jokes and poor comparisons. Girl Talk is in a league of his own and you can’t compare Jack White to any contemporary musician. This is an insult to the bands playing Firefly, who are more respected and talented. S

ince moving from South Philadelphia to Ardmore two years ago, Michael Gall and his wife Lisa never expected to see the face of their old neighbor, Keith Hardy, ever again—and, frankly, that would have been fine with them.

But there he was, looking wild-eyed in a mugshot posted online next to a story about a bartender who had been stabbed to death in South Philadelphia. Hardy, 57, was one of two men arrested in the June 24 murder of 44-year-old George Fox, who was killed during a robbery at T-Barr’s Bar on the 2200 block of S. Eighth Street when he picked up a shift after not working there for three years.

“Oh my god, that’s him!” Michael thought when he clicked on the Yahoo headline and saw the photo of Hardy, eyes glassy, hair unkempt, lips open, as if surprised.

“He looked defeated,” Lisa says.

Hardy was a key figure on the Galls’ old block, a stretch of South Philadelphia along Seventh Street between Tasker and Morris that, in hindsight, the Galls call “the twilight zone” or “the black hole.” For the three years they lasted, they watched as people moved in, then quietly, and quickly, moved back out.

Lisa, 32, says it seemed the rest of South Philly—that is, the South Philly where they had pictured living—was happily bustling right alongside them one block in any direction. But their block felt like it “went off a cliff.”

The trouble began in fall 2009 when Hardy, who lived across the street from the Galls, politely offered to fix two old bicycles the couple picked up at a Goodwill store. The transaction appealed to the Galls, communityminded musicians who sing together in the band A Fistful of Sugar. They recall Hardy told them: “I’m unemployed right now and I don’t know you guys very well, and you don’t know me, but I used to work at a bike shop and can use the money to fix your bikes. I’ll charge you $50 plus parts.”

Michael says that a couple weeks later, Hardy invited them up to his crumbling apartment to show off his progress.

“The first thing you notice when you get into the apartment was a very old-looking baby’s crib sitting in the middle of the front room filled with

puzzles that were in frames,” recalls Michael.

One bike was repaired, and they took it back. Hardy told them he had made a mistake with the second one and he needed more time to fix it. But then the bike vanished, and Hardy explained it was stolen by someone he owed money to.

“As I see it, he either owed me my money back, or a bike,” says Michael.

Michael would knock on his door, makeshift receipt in hand. Hardy avoided them.

Michael says he was constantly asking strangers to clear off his porch.

Word of the couple’s beef with Hardy spread, and people would ask them whose “side” they were on.

PPD spokesman Ray Evers calls the Galls’ old neighborhood an “interesting area” and says crime-wise, it’s not one of the “bad” areas but it has more “mid-level type crimes going on,” such as drug dealing.

“If cops come in and it gets heated, we try to calm a situation down,” says Evers, about neighbors calling

“That’s when he started to get scarier,” says Michael. The Galls got nervous. They say after the bike disappeared, Hardy started to mention crossbars, knives, people he hurt. Lisa says he also often brought up medical tests or appointments to show how he was trying to help himself. “It turns out, the puzzles were part of his therapy,” she says.

Michael says the threats turned direct. “Like, ‘I wouldn’t want anything to happen to you or your pretty little wife.’” When he went to the police, though, he says he was advised to drop the complaint.

A few months later, Michael says Hardy came over to the Galls’ house acting frantic and insisting Michael give him $50. The couple were up late making cookies for their wedding two days later, and they just wanted to be left alone. Michael handed Hardy the cash to go away.

The Galls say the problems with their block were bigger than Hardy.

The outside light above their steps was always broken, and the darkness attracted random people who sometimes got loud and confrontational.

“It got to be too much,” says Michael. They moved to Ardmore.

“I think that the real problem is apathy,” says Lisa. “But I wonder if the police just felt helpless and hopeless, too.”

Meanwhile, the Galls wonder how inevitable Hardy’s murder charge was, and how the constant stress and drama of the block grinded down Hardy the way it had on them.

Hardy, who was already on probation for theft at the time of Fox’s death, is in jail awaiting preliminary hearing on Aug. 21. Allen placed his first call to WIP to complain about then-Phillies manager Jim Fregosi. Host Howard Eskin called him a moron and an imbecile and told him never to call back.

Undeterred, Allen eventually became the station’s most distinctive and celebrated caller, thanks to his wit, charisma, sports knowledge, prodigious rants and polarizing opinions. Hosts like Anthony Gargano and Mike Missanelli often let him speak his piece longer than the usual one-minute-40seconds allotted to callers.

“L

et me just say it for the record—the Eagles will win the Super Bowl this year,” says Phil Allen, a sly smile creeping across his face as he leans into his microphone in 97.5 The Fanatic’s Bala Cynwyd studios on a recent Sunday evening. Training camp has barely gotten under way and Allen’s already sniffing total victory. “13-and-3 regular season, a zip through the playoffs, and I’ll be on Broad and Federal [for the parade] and you can come drink with me ’cause I told you so.”

“Andy Reid is the best coach in the NFL,” he throws in for good measure.

But caller “Ed from Lansdale” isn’t having it. “I don’t see where the Eagles even make the playoffs—you’re being ridiculous,” says Ed. “Same quarterback, same coach, same dumbass defensive coordinator. Let’s wait for the first game before we start handing out spots on Broad Street.”

And on a computer screen in front of Allen, the texts flowing into the station are more brutal. “Phil you blow, nobody listens to your predictions.

You’re an annoying idiot,” reads one.

Allen—a fit 50, he looks like he could be Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins’ older brother—leans back, barely stifling a laugh. He lives for this. It’s his job to stir up the callers, and he knows what gets them going because he used to be one of them. After all, he’s the one and only “Phil From Mt. Airy”—the former king of Philadelphia sports-talk radio callers. Why did he surrender his throne in April 2010? To become a weekend Fanatic host.

“It’s still like a dream come true,” Allen says of the transition from caller to host. He’s giving up his long-time bookselling business to focus all his energy on radio and keep this dream a reality.

Phil Allen: “... Being on the radio for four hours is intense. It’s just like sex—when you’re done, it’s like, ‘Damn, where’s my cigarette?’”

By 2006, Allen says, he was in talks with WIP to become a host but nothing came of it. And then, when Missanelli signed on with WIP rival The Fanatic in 2008, Allen switched call-in allegiances and—with the help of Missanelli, one of Allen’s biggest champions—he convinced Fanatic program director Matt Nahigian to hire him. “Part of [joining the Fanatic] was because [WIP] spurned me,” says Allen, “and now my job is to kick [WIP’s] ass.”

After more than a year of early Saturday morning shows with various co-hosts, Allen’s got two solo shows now—he’s on Saturday afternoons from 3 to 7 p.m., and he’s got a Sunday night sports wrap-up show at 6—in addition to occasional fill-in work during the week. He also does a Saturday morning show on WURD 900AM. Though he’s used to his hosting duties by now, he still gets hyped up before every show.

“When I’m in there, it’s on. I didn’t even sit down for my first year and a half. I threw things. If I had a wireless microphone, I woulda paced that room like I’m on fire.” He still rants about the Eagles front office or how badly the Sixers need to trade Andre Iguodala, but he’s learned to dial it back. “You can’t be over the top all the time. But to this day, being on the radio for four hours is intense. It’s just like sex—when you’re done, it’s like, ‘Damn, where’s my cigarette?’”

Allen’s garnered a loyal following; like any good sports-talk radio host, he’s got listeners who think he’s the

shit, and others who think he’s full of shit. He’s rarely hard-up for callers, the lifeblood of any sports-talk station.

“I love my guys,” he says of such regulars as “Mike the Weasel,” “Guido from Ambler” and even “Mitch from East Windsor,” who Allen laughs “drives me crazy, he’s so fuckin’ annoying.

“They’re the guys I tailgated with, the guys I went to the Vet with, we’re the denizens of the fucking darkness,” he continues. “I know what it’s like when you sit on hold for 40 minutes just to get your minute-40. It’s hard for me to hang up on people.”

With more than two years as a Fanatic host under his belt, Allen’s hoping for a more prominent role at the station someday, ideally a daily gig. “I think I’m as talented and know my sports as well as anyone at The Fanatic,” he says. “I think I could do any time slot.”

Even his good pal Missanelli’s top-rated, highly coveted weekday afternoon slot? “If something ever happened to him, I’d step over his dead body right up to that mic in a heartbeat!” Allen shouts, bursting out of his chair and doubling over laughing.

“I love [Missanelli],” he says after catching his breath. “But I’m a competitive guy. I would love a shot at that drive-time show. This is my life, man.

10 Tips for Chilling Out With a Drink Maybe you can’t take a beach vacation right now. That doesn’t mean you can’t take a new approach to city sippin’.

1. Drink like a Southerner.

Our summer seems to have morphed from a run-of-the-mill season into an endless string of heat waves; going by the temperature, it’s starting to feel a lot like the South around these here parts. Fortunately, local establishments seem to be taking note, offering an expanding array of classic, thirst-quenching Southern-style cocktails.

Perhaps most notable is the Grown Folks Ice Tea at Ms. Tootsie’s (1312 South St.), an award-winning tropical brew comprised of a whopping 13 top-secret ingredients as well as five different liquors. Over at Warmdaddy ’s (1400 Columbus Blvd.), it’s all about their Daddy Long Legg’s Lemonade, a more mature version of the country-style lemonade your mamma used to make, and a tastier alternative to your standard Long Island. As for the ultimate Southern beverage—that’s the Mint Julep, for those readers who’ve never drank their way through a Kentucky Derby party—arguably the best in town can be found at The Twisted Tail (509 S. Second St.) and Khyber Pass Pub (56 S. Second St.), which is the only bar serving it up slushy-style. Should you be in the mood for a down-home cocktail of a less traditional variety, try the tangy Kentucky Orange Blossom at Watkins Drinkery (1712 S. 10th St.) or Bar Ferdinand’s (1030 N. Second St.) peach-and-homemade-lemonade-infused Summer Shandy.

Certainly beats going on one of those lame walking tours, right? Add some additional excitement to your happy hour and set out on a booze-fueled journey of the city. Making this much easier, many local watering holes have actually devised neighborhood-centric cocktails. For example: In Center City, instead of a stereotypical dirty martini, opt for a cocktail that’s a bit more innovative yet equally urbane, like Village Whiskey’s (118 S. 20th St.) Sansom Street Sangria, a mix of white whiskey, red wine, orange Curaçao, spiced sugar, fruits and lemon. When drinking in South Philly, the ideal cocktail should reflect the neighborhood’s diversity and tough exterior; adding a super-sweet touch of lime and agave nectar to a potent blend of tequila and triple sec, SoWe’s (918 S. 22nd St.) Broad Street Bully embodies this duality quite perfectly. In Old City, why not reconnect with the charming cobblestone streets and choose a libation the Founding Fathers would approve of? With a no-frills combo of Bluecoat gin and St. Germain and a classy touch of orange blossom water, the Philadelphia Flower at Philadelphia Bar and Restaurant (120 Market St.) nails it. Finally, let’s face it: Only in the Gayborhood can you order a hot pink, sexually suggestive cocktail without eliciting snickers. So go for it.

3. Find new picturesque places to drink outside.

OK, so we all know that Parc has a lovely view.

But really, once you’ve spent any significant portion of your adult life in town, how much more can you marvel at Rittenhouse Square?

If you insist on being in the vicinity, head a few doors down to Rittenhouse Tavern (251 S. 18th St.), where you can admire the view from atop its hidden garden patio without any pedestrians cramping your style.

Meanwhile, there are other places not so far away where you can enjoy the scenery—both geographical and human—along with your beverage. Should you prefer a waterfront view, Morgan’s Pier (221 N. Columbus Blvd.) certainly gives every other local beer garden a run for their money, offering locals a laidback atmosphere to drink al fresco right on the Delaware River. Start off, logically enough, at the London Grill (2301 Fairmount Ave.), where everyone who drinks a pint of Wells or Young’s during the Olympics, starting on Fri., July 27, will be entered in a beer-themed prize drawing.

Meanwhile, down in South Philly, the Devil’s Den (1148 S. 11th St.) may not have prizes to win, but it will be offering a broader spectrum of Olympic drink specials—$1-off draft specials every night July 27–Aug. 12, rotating through craft favorites including Allagash, Dogfish Head, Iron Hill, Tröegs and more. On those particularly sweltering days when your loins long endlessly for the shore, a mere drink on the rocks just isn’t going to cut it. Fortunately, regardless of what sort of beverage you have a hankering for, chances are there’s a place serving it in frozen form.

Should you be craving something that’ll cool you off, satisfy your sweet tooth and get you tipsy simultaneously, the Adult Milkshakes at P.Y.T. (1050 Hancock St.) will definitely do the trick. The hard part is choosing between

the Birthday Cake Shake, Bananas John Foster and the Cereal Killer. For a cocktail that reeks of summer, The Adobe Café (1919 E. Passyunk Ave.) happens to have eight tropical rum-based frozen specialties.

Depending just how fucked up you want to get, this includes the Adobe Brain Freeze, which contains three types of rum blended with mango and topped with Bacardi 151.

Last, but certainly not least, there’s the good ol’ margarita, and as everyone in this city with taste buds knows, nothing beats the Blood Orange Margarita at El Vez (121 S. 13th St.) or the Watermelon Margarita at Cantina Los

Caballitos (1651 Passyunk Ave.) and Cantina Dos Segundos (931 N. Second St.). Fun fact: Both contain more alcohol when frozen than on the rocks.

6. Drink like you,re on cable television...

Once upon a time, by which we mean two and a half years ago, the American retail/ media complex became obsessed with trying to “help” us all drink (and dress) in aesthetic harmony with the cast of Mad Men. Why, then, Hop Sing Laundromat’s Bost Healer is just one of the dessertiest drinks in town.

has there been no push to follow suit with the hottest cable drama of the current season, the grungy fantasy epic Game of Thrones?

Dwarf-sized hero Tyrion Lannister, played by Peter Dinklage, is often seen swilling Dornish wine with his three squares a day. He uses that wine—sweet, spiced, from mugs and animal skins—as a way to jump-start conversation and impress women; well, fair enough, that’s how it’s often done in the mundane world, too. So, this summer—which, unlike the summer in Westeros, hasn’t lasted a whole decade, though it sure does feel like it—chill out with the sort of sweet wines Tyrion likes.

Such as a Moscato, a Madeira, or best of all a Riesling—currently being celebrated as part of the nationwide “Summer of Riesling” campaign, and about to be showcased Aug. 7 at McCrossen’s Tavern (529 N. 20th St.), whose “Smackdown!” event lets you drink and judge 10 different Rieslings for $30.

7. …...or like you,re up there in IMAX.

This year hasn’t just been the summer of heat waves, it’s been the summer of superheroes.

And while Spider-Man, of course, is too young to drink, his Marvel compadres in the Avengers have no such obstacles. So why not work your way around town on an Avengers drinking tour? Start with the easy one, as three movies’ worth of Iron Man have made perfectly clear that Tony Stark prefers scotch—so make your way to Village Whiskey (118 S. 18th St.) for a Laphroaig, or Time (1315 Sansom St.) for a Glenmorangie.

The Black Widow, it seems safe to guess, is a woman who can handle her vodka, so head next to Continental (1801 Chestnut St. or 138 Market St.) for your choice of the Moscow Mule or the Astronaut (though she’d no doubt prefer it were called the Cosmonaut).

Thor? Easy: mead drinker. Head to Tria (18th and Sansom sts.) to sample the herb-infused Makana Iqhilika honey mead. And Captain America—well, while he’s no straight-edge, he’s certainly the designated driver in this bunch. So, seeing as how he’s a man adrift in the 21st century from his native 1940s Brooklyn, your final stop needs to be the Franklin Fountain (116 Market St.) for a good old-fashioned New York Egg Cream.

8. Drink whatever drink sounds the coolest.

Obviously, you never want to ignore a drink’s actual ingredients, but if something sounds like liquid coolness, it’s probably a decent bet.

Or, at least a fun one. (You know, sorta like with racehorses.) The Trestle Inn (11th and Callowhill sts.) takes a mysterious approach with its signature creations, hooking patrons in with sexy, albeit vague descriptions and such enticing names as Cheap Trick, Diablo

Cody and Velvet Jones, “the drink four out of five pimps prefer.” Then there’s Rum Bar (2005 Walnut St.), which definitely deserves credit for having not only an expansive drink menu, but one that may just cause you to drool on yourself: Its “Tiki Tiki” category alone boasts eight massive concoctions, each one more elaborate and mouth-watering than the next. For example, the Abyss, a bottomless fishbowl of exotic fruit juices and liquor that can only be explored by a minimum of two people. Still, at the end of the day, the Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co. (112 S. 18th St.) may be the only joint in town where the skillfully crafted libations are even more badass than they sound. And with names like Pirate Slave, Cowboy Killer and Restraining Order, that’s one hell of a feat.

9. Drink adventurously.

Wisely, but adventurously.

Sure, on paper, the combination of Miller High Life, pickle juice and Old Faithful BBQ Sauce might sound like something that would be served during interrogations at Gitmo. At Percy Street Barbecue (900 South St.) however, it’s known as Hillbilly Gatorade.

And if you like pickles, it’s actually not that bad. So before you go making a stank face at every peculiar cocktail you come across, consult with a bartender and find out what it’s all about. For instance, if you asked any of the bartenders at The Dandelion (124 S. 18th St.), they’d be quick to tell you that the egg inside their frothy, cinnamon sprinkled Summer Beer Flip is barely detectable. In fact, it compliments the mix of rum, pilsner and apricot marmalade quite nicely. For the particularly bold boozehounds, there’s Tattooed Mom’s (530 South St.) new signature Mexico City Lunch Box, a hefty blend of Espolon tequila and Art in the Age’s Rhuby spirit with a splash of lime and a kick of hot sauce.

10. Make it youself, lazypants.

Remember those boozed-up milkshakes we mentioned? Here’s a secret: If you’re ambitious, you can make one yourself with some of the highest-quality chocolate in town. Just BYO to Bella Vista’s Golosa Cafe (806 S. 6th St.); this cozy and romantic European chocolate bar uses only the best in their Frullati al Cioccolato, cold chocolate shakes. While they’re rich in flavor, they have a frothy texture, noticeably lighter than your usual soda-shop milkshake, making for a refreshing finish to any summer dinner.

Owner Fabio Scarpelli recommends adding a dark, spiced rum to most of his favorite drinks; try Arancino (70 percent chocolate with orange) or Cocco (70 percent chocolate with coconut.) If rum isn’t your taste, substitute a bottle of tequila, vodka or bourbon for daily changing pairings. n

No Booze Necessary?

Brian Freedman asks why it’s such a challenge to make sophisticated, nonalcoholic cocktails. feedback@philadelphiaweekly.com ast week, at a family dinner, my 5-yearold nephew sipped his first Shirley Temple. As for so many of us, it was his first foray into the world of nominally adult drinking. Of course, the flavor of the thing had little to do with that landmark—like so many nonalcoholic concoctions, this childhood classic is a sticky-sweet highball of artificial flavors and a cherry on top that’s more corn syrup and food coloring than actual fruit. But the ritual of it—the sweating side of the glass, the jingle of the ice, the sips he took whenever the adults at the table pulled from our cocktails—clearly struck a nerve with him. It may have been nonalcoholic, but my nephew, as a direct result of the vivid red liquid before him, felt like a part of the grown-up crowd for the night.

Kids aren’t necessarily the only people who want or need nonalcoholic mixed drinks, though. Mothers-to-be, teetotalers permanent or temporary—there are plenty of adults who don’t want to get tipsy but also don’t want to miss out on the vibe of their social circle. And it would be nice if Shirley Temple and her equally moldy old mocktail pals weren’t their only options.

“When I was over at the Farmer’s Cabinet, we always kept the temperance drink on the menu as part of the classics,” says local cocktail guru Phoebe Esmon, a self-described “gypsy bartender” well-known for re-creating the bar programs at Chick’s and Farmer’s Cabinet and co-founding the Bartenders Guild in Philadelphia. “I feel like, if you’re pregnant— [or maybe you just] want to go out and be in a bar, you still want to have the atmosphere of a bar around you, but you don’t want to drink alcohol—you should still be able to enjoy yourself and not feel like a jerk, or not have someone judge you, or just be stuck with a water. So I think it’s important to always offer nonalcoholic options for people, and not just like a virgin Bloody Mary or whatever.”

There’s an intense focus in Philadelphia drinking establishments right now on craft cocktails. That means the stakes have been raised even higher for what passes as an “acceptable” nonalcoholic option among a certain set of serious cocktail aficionados. The trick, however, is that it’s perhaps a bit more difficult to craft a great drink without the benefit of booze.

“If you’re working from a base spirit—say I’m using bourbon—I know things that are going to taste good with that,” Esmon explains. “I’m going to be able to pair things

and make you a nice balanced drink even if I’m making it off the cuff ... You know from experience, and from working with [the flavors of base spirits], what to do. Making a nonalcoholic cocktail is a little bit more like cooking.”

Though there’s a certain degree of tweaking that goes into crafting a traditional cocktail, even more can be needed when it comes

syrupy. And that’s great, we ended up making a bunch of stuff like that ... [but] we got away from doing the non-alcoholic pairing as a result because we weren’t serving the stuff that we were super excited about.”

That said, there’s nonetheless a growing range of delicious options in the city for drinkers who enjoy the more sophisticated approach to sober beverages.

The ritual of the cocktail—the sweating glass, the jungling ice—strikes a nerve that’s even deeper than the booze is. to alcohol-free ones. Without the benefit of a base spirit’s power and ability to define a drink, striking a balance without sacrificing the drink’s personality is a tightrope-walk, requiring both attention to detail and a deep sense of creativity. Add to that the fact that not all drinkers of non-alcoholic cocktails want the same thing from their tipple— some want it to mimic the flavors of familiar cocktails based on spirits, while others want it to resemble nothing but its alcohol-free self—and you have a seriously daunting challenge.

Even once an interesting roster of nonalcoholic cocktails is created, there’s no guarantee that an audience for them will materialize.

Steve Wildy, beverage director for the Vetri Family restaurants (Alla Spina, Amis, Vetri, Osteria), discovered this first-hand at one of the city’s top dining destinations. “When we switched over to all-tasting menus at Vetri, we had been doing the wine pairings for a long time before that, and then we decided we’d add a beer pairing and a non-alcoholic pairing,” he says. “And we were really excited about it. We tested a bunch of different stuff, and all of the [options] we came up with were geared towards cocktail flavors—things that were kind of recreations of classic cocktails, or at least had a component of cocktails where they weren’t overly sweet, that typically had a bitter component. They were geared toward [pairing] with food. And we found that they kind of fell flat with nonalcoholic drinkers. The ones that were big hits were the ones that were sweet and juicy and kind of

• Hop Sing Laundromat serves up the Little Joe (its name a tribute, as the restaurant’s is, to the old TV Western Bonanza), vivid with the juice of freshly squeezed pineapples and green grapes, a dash of homemade grenadine, and club soda, all over ice.

• And shrubs—essentially fruit vinegars— are increasingly popular; City Tavern has been making fine use of them for some time now.

So go ahead and enjoy a more sophisticated nonalcoholic drink than a Shirley Temple.

Unless you’re a 5-year-old kid. In which case, please do not let us interfere as you bask in the glory of the single most glamorous thing you’ve ever tasted. n

f Frank Ocean is truly the sensitive-ass R&B singer he portrays himself to be, then Channel ORANGE is his magnum opus. His first official, full-length debut (he first gained attention with last year’s equally superb mixtape, Nostalgia, Ultra), ORANGE has Ocean basically taking a flamethrower to the pimp/playa image many R&B singers create for themselves (see last week’s cover story) to show how vulnerable and emotionally conflicted brothas can be. The most soulful member of the Odd Future crew, Ocean rambles around ORANGE like an aimless, lonely protagonist in a Bret Easton Ellis novel. He tries to find something resembling love and happiness and usually comes up empty, whether he’s hanging with the rich kids, trying to get some affection from a stripper or actually realizing he may just be into dudes. Daring in both its musical composition and lyrical subject matter, Channel ORANGE is the essential soundtrack for guys like Ocean: Club-hopping, bottle-popping brothas who still go home at the end of the night all by themselves. crAiG D. liNDsAY

The Legend of Zelda: The Symphony of the Goddesses

an innocuous travelogue. In truth, he was filming a damning portrait of the Apartheid regime. A quasi-documentary narrative about the cruelties of white law, Come Back, Africa—which premiered in New York soon after the 1960 Sharpeville massacre in which police killed 69 Africans—is thus a blunt political instrument. But it’s so much more.

Filmed on the sly with nonprofessional “actors,” Africa is as concerned with polemic as it is with the people themselves. On many occasions, the tragic narrative pauses for street music, and one lengthy hang-out scene starts as a political discussion, veers into a couple of “impromptu” songs from the about-to-explode Miriam Makeeba then goes into a chat about religion. Alive in its own idiosyncratic ways, Rogosin’s low-budget classic is more than just a time capsule curio with a noble axe to grind.

For the most part, the Philadelphia theater renaissance has been driven by the city’s huge and talented pool of actors. Lately, however, the area has seen a surge in the number of local playwrights. One of the most unique of these dramatists is Temple University grad Brittany Holdahl. Grey Wolf Productions will showcase five of Holdahl’s short comedies this week at the Shubin Theatre under the title Mayan Chowder & Other Tales (through July 29). Directed by Joseph Nevin and featuring six actors portraying a gaggle of eccentric characters, Holdahl says the goal of her work is simply to make people laugh. Quirky, whimsical, imaginative and endearing, the plays recall the absurd antics of Monty Python and the wonderfully stupid humor of Mel Brooks.

Ranging in length from 20 minutes to a brief 600 seconds, the strange scenarios include a young woman impregnated by a guy impersonating a giant bunny; a Campbell’s soup can capable of altering reality; a gassy ghoul hunted by a pair of bickering Ghostbusters; a hungry dragon in search of a human appetizer; and a vegan environmentalist who is appalled to discover that his partner is slaughtering the local groundhog population with an ancient crossbow. 27 Come Back, Africa In the late ’50s, American filmmaker Lionel Rogosin journeyed to Johannesburg, South Africa and told officials he was there to shoot

Bomba Estéreo, out of Bogotá, Colombia, electro-shocks the shimmery psychedelics of Cumbia, splicing folkloric traditions with funk, hip-hop and strobe-flashing dance. Started by loop manipulator and bassist Simón Mejía about a decade ago, the group turned iconic when Liliana Saumet joined as frontwoman, extravagantly costumed and constantly mobile, chanting, sputtering, insinuating and shouting staccato Spanish into the mic. The band’s international debut, Blow Up, did just that in 2009, on the strength of fiery, hypnotic grooves like “Fuego” and “Raza.” Two years later, an EP offered “Ponte Bomb,” a pummelling, white-hot Latin remake of Technotronic’s “Pump Up the Jam.” Bomba Estéreo shows often extend into the early hours, so you might want to indulge in another Colombian import—relax, we mean coffee—before you go.

Despite a horrific car accident last year that left bassist Andrew Kratzat and his fiancée both with traumatic brain injuries, the Hot Club of Detroit has thankfully regrouped, readying the release of their fourth album, Junction, next month. This retro fusion/ gypsy jazz quintet is inspired by Belgian-born gypsy guitar pioneer Django Reinhardt, who formed the Quintette du Hot Club de France in 1934, named in part for a popular jazz appreciation society there. Swinging Sirens

I

t was almost a decade ago, but it’s easy to imagine that Lyle Lovett’s guitar is just now drying out. After his 2003 Penn’s Landing show was delayed for hours by a drenching summer rain, he slowly brought out the musicians from His Large Band one by one, with the acoustic players least likely to be electrocuted coming out first. While he eventually made it up to full strength for a twohour tour de force, those earlyset acoustic numbers provided a kind of spontaneous magic, where Lovett’s unparalleled mix of country, blues, folk, big-band and gospel songs got to stand up naked as the day they were born.

In this kind of unplugged setting, the virtuosic songwriting is what stands out most. Touring now with his smaller Acoustic Group, Lovett should be able to elicit a similar vibe at the Grand Opera House in Wilmington. But this time, it’ll be a lot drier. JEFFREY BaRG

In Philly, the concept of “street food” used to mean dirty water dogs or a pretzel, and the thought of handing out awards for that?

Geddafuggouddahere. Now, of course, we’re in the age of gourmet street fare (our stomachs don’t mind one bit) and hell, why not pit some of the city’s finest mobile chefs against one another to find out whose cuisine reigns supreme? Ergo, the second annual Vendys—the “Gastro-Grammys,” the “Oscars of Street Food”—in which eight finalists will vie in a no-holds-barred, four-hour cook-off to determine who’ll hoist the coveted Vendy Cup (and probably triple their lunch-rush in the next couple weeks). In commemoration of this event, tireless activists and their supporters will gather at the National Constitution Center for Disability Pride. Icelandic quartet’s epic sweep, the icy, distant elegance and fragile beauty of singer “Jonsi” Birgisson’s cooing falsetto coalesced in striking cinematic set pieces with the grandeur of an Albert Bierstadt western landscape. Their last two albums—2006’s Takk... and 2008’s Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust— blew back the grey clouds to reveal a heretofore unwitnessed sunny disposition with concision approaching a buzzcut compared to their prior prodigious lengths. Local Ham Makes Good Milk & Honey’s new cafe strives to balance local ingredients with quick presentation.

e have come to an interesting, perhaps inevitable crossroads in our collective relationship with locavorism in Philadelphia. What started off as more of a niche phenomenon has come to pervade our food lexicon: Never mind farmers markets and co-ops—now, even processed-food producers are getting into the act, touting any and all connections they have to farms and the earth.

I couldn’t help but think about this in relation to the new Milk & Honey Café at the Sister Cities Park, an offshoot of West Philly’s well-regarded local-food shop Milk & Honey Market.

It’s a smartly conceived space, from the surrounding glass that brings in the outside—the sunlight, the kids splashing in the water—to the simple, clean lines of the gray- and silver-toned tables and chairs. The company’s website touts a mission as laudable as any: supporting the local farmers, purveyors and residents in an effort to benefit both the planet in general and the immediate community in particular.

It’s impossible to argue with these goals; they are as important and beneficial as can be. But at the end of the day, the food, to paraphrase that same mission statement, speaks for itself.

And in that regard, Milk & Honey’s new cafe has some work to do.

Take the prepackaged sandwiches, for instance. They’re a fact of modern life, and some great ones are served up all over the city. But when a market is going to do that, the design of each sandwich takes on an even greater sense of importance. Wet ingredients should be layered between dry ones, which themselves should be used as insulation against the bread from growing soggy. It’s a little thing, but a crucial one, and it’s not being applied to Milk & Honey’s Fairmount sandwich, a vegetarian construction of gouda, pickled onions, arugula, red pepper pesto and tomatoes that were draped over the exceptionally soggy edges of the bread. The Franklin sandwich suffered the opposite problem: Its star ingredient, local turkey breast, was so dried out that it was difficult to gnaw through—the pleasant red-pepper pesto and mild gouda notwithstanding.

the Green Meadow Farm ham sang through, its sweet-savory complexity a delicious argument for never purchasing the stuff from Boar’s Head ever again. Lancaster cheddar and Kelchner’s mustard rounded out the deceptively simple sammy, and it was among the best things I tasted here.

The Coppa Caprese also worked well, even if it could have used a bit more meat; a $7 sandwich isn’t cheap, and for the money, a more generous layer of Italian Market coppa—not to the point of overstuffing, just enough to find a better balance with the thickness of the bread—would have made for a more robust meal. (It also would have allowed the brightness of the basil pesto to shine through more clearly.)

Side salads were good overall, demonstrating a more consistent level of both conception and execution. Garbanzos luxuriated with greens, baby tomatoes, carrots and a balanced honey mustard. Snappy lentil salad was electrified by a taut Dijon vinaigrette.

Quiche lorraine was excellent: The

crust, with its deft balance of heartiness and delicacy, supported an egg layer as fluffy as a soufflé’s—a perfect frame for the smoke of the swine.

Pastries are also worth checking out. I particularly enjoyed the coconut macaroon and the oatmeal cookie, both of which placed a focus on their hefty centerpiece ingredients rather than on their respective senses of sweetness. And the almond croissant was a fabulously flaky pastry wrapped around an aromatic marzipan center.

Milk & Honey’s inconsistencies don’t appear to be hurting business right now—it is a fantastic space for families and local businesspeople, with fountains to one side and a kidfriendly “lake” off to the other—but it’ll have to shore up some of these shortfalls in order to make it through the long months when splashing around outside isn’t reason enough to visit from other neighborhoods. The philosophy behind Milk & Honey Café is as solid as it gets. Now it’s time for the execution to catch up. n

chosen images on an unsuspecting world that accepts anything in print as gospel.

Conversely, the idealistic Ambrose fancies himself a champion for truth. What he soon discovers is that his noble pursuit is at odds with his desire to land a good story, a circumstance he hopes will translate into a job at The New York Times. In a newspaper, however, heroes and villains are easy to identify, and by the play’s end, Ambrose learns that the divide between saints and sinners is not always clearly defined.

Pryor’s steady, well-acted production efficiently brings all the ideas in Graham’s play to light. Scott Anderson’s period costumes, along with Matt Saunders’ sepiatoned scenic design, do well at establishing the 1920s era, and Christopher Colucci’s appropriately understated sound design effectively supports the rural setting.

Unlike most new plays that undergo a rigorous development process, Mr. Hart and Mr. Brown received relatively few readings before its People’s Light debut.

There is a lot to like in Graham’s play, but occasionally the plot slackens, and the story loses its momentum. One suspects that if the play were shortened slightly from its current two-act, near two-hour running time, Mr. Hart and Mr. Brown may be a more focused—and subsequently compelling—theater experience. n

PHILADELPHIA

ocal playwright Bruce Graham is serving up a slightly undercooked yet intriguing drama with the world premiere of his Mr. Hart & Mr. Brown, the final production of People’s Light & Theatre Company’s 2011-12 season.

The first work by Graham since his award-winning The Outgoing Tide—which captured Chicago’s prestigious Jefferson Award for best new play and made its local debut earlier this season at Philadelphia Theatre Company—Mr. Hart & Mr. Brown is set in tiny Homer, Neb. “For once, I wanted to write something different that doesn’t take place in Philly,” Graham told PW. It’s actually the second consecutive play that he’s set beyond Philly’s city limits, though in Outgoing Tide, which takes place on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, the city still figures prominently in the lives of the characters.

Hart & Brown begins in the 1960s in the home of a local historian, played by a delightfully eccentric Peter DeLaurier. An opinionated but likable elderly gentleman, the historian’s recollections transport us back to the 1920s and an Indian reservation on the outskirts of Homer. It’s there we encounter the play’s three primary characters: the revered local sheriff Mr. Hart (Christopher Patrick Mullen in one of his finer performances), a young, ambitious newspaper reporter named Ambrose Healey (up-and-comer Michael Doherty) and the mysterious city slicker Mr. Brown, given voice by versatile veteran actor Richard Ruiz.

Although Graham has mentioned that Hart & Brown grew out of his interest in investigating whether violent tendencies are ingrained in one’s DNA or a result of being raised in a violent environment, in director Pete Pryor’s production, the nature/nurture debate is just one of the many dualities explored. Reality and illusion, fact and fiction, good and evil and truth versus deceit are all placed under Graham’s microscope. It’s the sort of exploration Henrik Ibsen may have imagined when he pioneered the notion of dramatic realism, which approached the stage as a kind of laboratory from which to examine human behavior.

Perhaps the most gripping element in Graham’s play is its depiction of identity as a kind of performance. In Hart & Brown, all the world’s a stage, and the two primary characters are each playing a carefully cultivated role. For both Mr. Hart and Mr. Brown, perception trumps reality, and the media are a means to project their

Screenprints Galore Show Edge, Grit Three friends, three styles, one showcase, all of them worth seeing.

n any given Friday or Saturday night at Masthead Print Studios in NoLibs, you’re almost guaranteed to find a crowd of beer-wielding 20-somethings with cool haircuts eyeing up the gallery’s latest collection of artwork. So, it seems appropriate that graphic designer and Masthead founder Shawn Hileman may have never decided to turn his screenprinting studio/apartment into a gallery space if his friends and fellow artists JP Flexner and James Heimer had not planted the seed in his head. “There might,” Flexner notes, “have been several beers involved.”

Hileman concedes the decision was made well under the influence, but he’s glad he listened to his friends. “It has been amazing to meet all the creatives and pick their brains,” the 28-year-old says.

All three are accomplished freelance artists, having each successfully found a niche in the local music scene.

Collectively, the three amigos have designed posters for practically every music venue in town and for such well-known acts as the Bouncing Souls, Matt & Kim, the Fray, Norah Jones and Foster the People.

Many of these posters can now be seen showcased in the swanky Rittenhouse interior design showroom Studio: Christensen as part of their retrospective group show, Screenprints Galore.

“Making band posters is a true honor and basically every designer’s dream in school,” Hileman says. “I used to make posters for [music venue] the Fire when I first moved here. I didn’t make a dime, but it got my foot in the door.”

Musical influences aside, hanging side by side in the barren and almost blindingly white Christensen space, the three artists’ individual aesthetics seem all the more pronounced, even if a bit out of place.

Hileman’s work is the most commercial, as his prints are typically clean, colorful and maybe even a little cutesy. His more recent work is also marked by a cool, laid-back vibe.

With his affinity for neon colors and close attention to detail, Flexner’s designs, on the other hand, are far more garish in comparison. Oddly enough, the Maryland transplant first met Hileman when they were both high schoolers and aspiring rockers playing a show in the neighboring town. “I grew up listening to punk rock and going to local shows—and still do,” he says.

“Going to see a good show is the perfect foil to sitting around drawing all day.”

college, having landed a job doing packaging design and product development for the now-defunct CDI Toys. He’s currently designing apparel for clients ranging from retailers to indie music labels. He also plays drums in the local punk band Ex Friends.

As for Heimer, his featured prints have the distinction of being the most illustration-based, mastering what can only be described as an edgy, deliberate messiness.

“I tend to draw really small and blow my work up to get thick, chunky, gritty lines,” says the South Philly resident. “I also try to stay away from the computer as much as possible and never clean the bed of my scanner. That all adds to the grit.”

After graduating from UArts in 2004, Heimer spent six years working as a commercial screen printer until being hired by the pop-punk outfit the Wonder Years before the band had a national following.

After creating their logos, T-shirt designs and record covers, he eventually started to gain his own following. More recently, the 30-year-old has shifted his focus to editorial and cover work.

Still, if you were to ask either of these guys about their success, chances aren’t you wouldn’t get a serious answer. In fact, when ask to describe the current exhibition, Hileman responded: “A constant supply of toilet paper.” n Through Aug. 10. Six Pack Six Badass Actors Who Directed Very Non-Badass Movies

By Matt Prigge mprigge@philadelphiaweekly.com Paul Newman, Rachel, Rachel (1968): Even in his younger days, Newman wasn’t only the cocksure badass of Hud and The Hustler ; his range spanned from heavy Tennessee Williams to traditional star fluff. Still, it must have been a mild shock when his name appeared in the director’s credit of this sensitive drama, starring wife Joanne Woodward as a spinster schoolteacher. Newman was even nominated for a Golden Globe, but that only got him back into the director’s chair thrice more, once for the even more unlikely adaptation of The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds.

Clint Eastwood, Breezy (1973): Eastwood has gone to great lengths, with the 30-plus films he’s directed, to prove he’s more than Dirty Harry; he even made a decent film out of the worst novel ever written (The Bridges of Madison County). Indeed, his third film is a gentle—and shockingly charming—MayDecember romance between cranky William Holden and frequently naked hippie Kay Lenz, whose name is—yes—Breezy.

Sylvester Stallone, Staying Alive (1983): In between directing Rocky III and Rocky IV, Stallone mysteriously wound up helming the bizarre sequel to Saturday Night Fever, in which Travolta’s Tony Manero is now angling for Broadway. Where the Rocky s blend the macho with the emotional, this luxuriates over unnaturally ripped flesh, in addition to running through a silly dance melodrama.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Christmas in Connecticut (1992): The cast of The Expendables are all secret pussies. The sole directorial outing of the Terminator is, unaccountably, a TV remake of the 1945 Barbara Stanwyck romance, starring Dyan Cannon and Kris Kristofferson. A friend said he would pay top dollar to watch set footage of Schwarzenegger directing this.

era rooted close to the stage, devoid of those de rigeur crowd shots that signal the cinema audience to share the crowd’s approbation. Demme’s always trying to get as close as he can to where the music is being made, and in Neil Young Journeys, he might have outdone himself and finally gotten a bit too close.

Shot with a spare handful of digital cameras placed sometimes not-sostrategically onstage, Journeys is about as up close and personal as such documents get. There’s a camera perched inside the pump organ for “After the Gold Rush,” and most intrusive is a tiny digital device mounted on the singer’s microphone, providing a larynx-eye view of “Down By The River.” Unlike the stately, artful proscenium arch Demme employed for 2006’s transcendent Neil Young Heart of Gold, this picture is rough-hewn and looks caught on the fly. Shots stretch on for much longer than one might expect in a concert picture, generally favoring a single off-kilter close-up and sticking to it for the entire song.

Neil Young Journeys is contextualized by a deliberately ramshackle cross-Canada drive, with Demme riding shotgun in the singer’s 1956 Crown Vic. More affable and less guarded than usually glimpsed on film, Young cruises through his hometown of

Neil Young Journeys Grade: B Director: Jonathan Demme Starring: Neil Young Omemee, offering a couple of amusing anecdotes about pet chickens and a bully who made him eat tar. Mostly he’s pointing at empty spaces and talking about things that are no longer there. The passage of time weighs hard on both the songs and the man, but he carries it all well. Dryly witty, yet weirdly melancholic, these moments anchor the picture into an emotional space more wistful than more traditional concert pictures.

Demme tries to rescue “Ohio” from 40 years of classic rock radio rotation by cutting to footage of the Kent State massacre and making sure to name every one of those four dead. It’s an admirable attempt to put an overplayed song back into proper context, but the stylistic device feels at odds with the movie’s otherwise Spartan technique.

Better is when, during a scalding “Hitchhiker,” Young quite accidentally hocks a loogie onto the microphonecamera. Demme shoots through the spit, for what feels like forever and a day. n

here is a town in North Ontario, or at least somebody sang about one in a song way back when.

Of course, that tune is “Helpless,” which has my vote for Neil Young’s finest composition. It remains intriguingly confined to the backburner throughout Jonathan Demme’s Neil Young Journeys, bubbling up a few notes at a time during the sardonically funny interstitial between-song location footage before again receding back into the ambient noise, over and over again.

This is Demme’s third feature-length Neil Young concert documentary since 2006, and some folks are beginning to wonder if he might be developing a problem. I don’t see it quite that way, if only because Demme shoots live music better than any other living filmmaker, and Young is such a multi-faceted, often confounding artist that no single picture could capture his mercurial mood swings and constant shapeshifting. Count me in the camp that wouldn’t mind another Young/Demme movie every two or three years from here on out.

The occasion for this picture is a performance (actually two) by Neil at Toronto’s Massey Hall, where he so famously played on the cusp of solo superstardom in 1971 (an event that brought about yet another Neil Young concert film, albeit one of the few not directed by Demme.) The sort-ofhomecoming here is less ballyhooed and spartanly staged. It’s just Neil in a ripped old hat with an electric guitar, an organ and a mountain of amplifiers that he somehow seems supernaturally able to distort into an entire band’s worth of unholy racket. The song selection alternates between 2010’s Le Noise and a grab bag of Young’s ’70s chestnuts. As typical with Neil Young— which is what separates him from most boomer classic rock artists cashing in on greatest hits tours for a quick buck— the past and the present are presented side by side, all part of the same flowing continuum.

Demme characteristically avoids the audience. They always seem like such unnecessary interruptions in his concert pictures, as he keeps the cam-

Going Greenfield Acclaimed filmmaker Lauren Greenfield gets to the heart of The Queen of Versailles.

hotographer and documentarian Lauren Greenfield had already spent a long career exploring the ideas behind our relationship with materialism and consumerism before her fourth doc, The Queen of Versailles, (review at right) stormed this year’s Sundance. Around the time of the financial crisis, Greenfield started shooting a film on David and Jackie Siegel, he the billionaire owner of time-share giant Westgate Resorts, she his unusually likable trophy wife. Together, they planned to build the largest American home, based on—and called—the Palace of Versailles.

When Westgate began suffering like most frivolous businesses post-2008, Greenfield was there to film their near-downfall. It’s not a pretty picture, which is one reason why David filed a lawsuit against Greenfield for defamation of character. Greenfield spoke with PW over the phone about how her relationship with them—or at least with Jackie—was rosier than such headlinegrabbing instances would have you think.

How does The Queen of Versailles fit into your past work?

I’ve been making work on consumerism for the last two decades. I started on my first book, Fast Forward, in the early ’90s. It was about growing up in L.A. and how kids are affected by the culture of materialism. The Queen of Versailles came out of a look into wealth. It really zeroes in on this one family and examines the financial crisis through this single story.

How did you convince the Siegels to participate? Were they reluctant?

No. Jackie was with me here [in New York City] yesterday. We did the “Today” show together, and she was at the premiere last night at the Museum of Modern Art. Somebody asked her, ‘Did you ever have any reservations about the film?’ And she said, ‘No.’ [Laughs] Jackie was always really game. They were really proud of their project to build the biggest house in America and were very public people. As the film progresses, our relationship is much more intimate. They become much more real by the end: Jackie’s not wearing any makeup, I’m filming her washing her face with a dermatological treatment. David also becomes more and more vulnerable, and has an incredible candor that feels very different than the first interview, where he’s very boastful. They were very generous from the start, but our access to them only deepened when things got bad.

What initially interested you in them as subjects, apart from the Versailles angle?

They don’t seem to be stereotypically

wealthy people, and Jackie doesn’t come off like the typical trophy wife.

That’s exactly what attracted me to them.

They had this openness and generosity and a down-to-earth quality. You don’t see that often with rich people. I felt she was a relatable person who could give us this inside view of wealth. She represented the American Dream, and they were both hardworking couples. To see this house is what they wanted when they made money was really interesting. And Jackie and David are both survivors. They’re both adaptable, and we find out different things from both of them. From Jackie, you discover she doesn’t care about the material stuff as much as you thought in the beginning, or that she comes to that belief through this experience. By the end, she’s reaching out to David, wanting his acceptance, wanting his love. David, I think, falls back on his core identity, which is a workaholic. The irony, of course, is he runs a vacation business and never takes a vacation.

How was this different from your past work, and how does documentary filmmaking compare to photography?

I think this was the most challenging project I’ve ever done. This is my fourth film and my second feature-length film, and the first in which I was able to bring my photographic voice into the film. I haven’t really done that in earlier films. You can really see the relationship between my photographic voice and the intimacy. The parts that are different are the developments over time.

I had to consider character development and story development, and how the huge changes over time affect their lives. n

New Releases The Queen of Versailles

Grade: B+ Review by Sean Burns

The recession writ extra-large in gigantic gaudy letters, director Lauren Greenfield’s unexpectedly moving documentary was originally intended to chronicle the building of David and Jackie Siegel’s dream house. A 90,000-squarefoot monstrosity modeled after the French palace of the title, complete with a view of Disney World, this monolithic structure stalled out in Florida (where else?) somewhere a good deal short of its $100 million price tag after the stock market cratered in the fall of 2008. Seventy-four-year-old, happily hubristic time-share mogul David Siegel watched with incredulity as his empire ran aground, while his dim-bulb, pneumatically-enhanced trophywife Jackie had no choice but to clutch her artificially-enlarged chest and gasp at the horror of finally living on something resembling a budget. Greenfield lucked into a front-row seat for these billionaires suddenly being forced to live like millionaires, and because of a misfortune shared by a nation, The Queen of Versailles transcends its Bravo TV-show trappings to become something rather telling, and weirdly empathetic.

Sympathy for the 1 percent? I guess you could call it that. Watch perpetually flummoxed onetime beauty queen Jackie baffle a Hertz rental car clerk, asking for the name of her driver. (“Wait, you mean a driver doesn’t come with the car?” she continues as he shakes his head.)

Living in an already gargantuan manse overrun with pets and servants, the layoffs wear so heavily, we can spot the passage of time according to

massive clumps of dogshit piling up on the carpet. The hired help peels off, while Jackie Siegel still tries to drag a stretch limo through the McDonald’s drive-through and indulges in some retail therapy that borders on pathological.

The Queen of Versailles begins as fish in a gilded barrel, and it’s hard not to recoil in giggles at the gauche family oil portraits, or David’s absurd insistence on conducting interviews from a throne. But a weird thing happens as the movie along: We begin to feel for Jackie and stop snickering at her basketball-sized fake tits. An up-from-nowhere small-town girl denied any concrete notion of just how screwed her husband’s business is, she soldiers on and hopes for the best while we witness empty call centers and a doomed Las Vegas skyscraper.

Siegel’s time-share business was based on aspirational luxury, and The Queen of Versailles is an ultimately haunting worst-case-scenario for Americans living beyond their means after the bottom already dropped out. n

Pink Ribbons, Inc. Grade: B Review by Matt Prigge

The use of “talking heads,” the dismissive term for shots of people in documentaries talking into the camera, has been disparaged by some as lazy filmmaking, and rightly so. But the ones in Pink Ribbons, Inc. deserve some kind of special award. A caustic and genuinely eye-opening takedown of the assumed-to-be-saintly breast cancer awarenss movement—at least the one represented by pretty pink ribbons—it isn’t particularly well-made: Slackily directed by Léa Pool and essentially translating the findings of the titular book, by Queen’s University professor Samantha King, into movie form for those too lazy to read.

On the other hand, it has some of the angriest, pissiest, quotable-ist—and, of course, incisive—talking heads in memory, and that only adds to the righteous outrage. The interviewees, all women, are careful not to besmirch the noble intentions of those who participate in the movement. But they’re dubious of a group that seeks to, as they put it, “soften the disease,” that appropriates the language of war (“suffering,” “fighting”), that denies anger and other messy emotions while instilling a “tyranny of cheerfulness.” An Oscar to the woman who talks about how she hates the word “survivor” because it’s a put-down to those who died, who also says of pink teddy bears: “I’m sorry, I’m not six years old.”

They’re not just being grinches. The more insidious problem is how the movement has glommed onto corporations to spread and popularize their message, a decision that’s

proven Faustian. Time and again, corporate tie-ins have been less than progressive: The film’s commentators lament a useless American Express campaign that donated a penny with every purchase, no matter the size, and one with KFC that tacitly endorsed “really horrible food.” Only 15 percent of research money goes to research, and only 5 percent of that goes to research on environmental causes of breast cancer, which doesn’t help when the likes of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation find themselves in bed with big business pollutants and cosmetic companies. There’s something tedious about the way the film constantly cuts to the same jubilant San Fran event, but as the film goes on, the participants’ pep goes from innocuous to oblivious of some truly heinous counter-productivity. n

Rock’s Renaissance Woman Returns

Kristin Hersh drops a dime on writing, 50 Foot Wave and mastering the new Throwing Muses LP.

You have a lot of different projects going on, as usual. Where to start?

Are you writing another book?

I signed a two-book deal with Penguin.

I only had the one book, but I wasn’t really thinking about it at the time. I was turning a diary into a nonfiction novel, so all I could think about was how to figure out how to do that without looking stupid.

And now I’m realizing that a two-book deal means that you write two books [Laughs]. But I was still getting up at 4 a.m. again … writing Rat Girl 2, then wondering why. [Laughs] So I dropped that. I started writing movies that I wanted to see that nobody had made yet.

So that’s the book that I’m hoping doesn’t suck.

How far along are you in that process?

About halfway though. And if this one sucks, then I’ll go back to Rat Girl 2.

In the meantime, in my real world, I leave for the studio in a few minutes, and I have a new solo record that the listeners have supported through CASH Music, like the [new Throwing] Muses record that is

mixed and about to be mastered as soon as we can sequence 33 goddamn songs!

And there’s a 50 Foot Wave record that’s almost finished.

uitarist Kristin Hersh is the most down-to-earth, tireless, bipolar rock ’n’ roll entrepreneur polymath around. Founder of seminal art band Throwing Muses when she was 14, Hersh also cranks out jagged soundscapes as part of power trio 50 Foot Wave and as a prolific solo artist. When not writing and recording music, she’s pioneering new music-industry funding and distribution models by developing CASH (Coalition of Artists and Stakeholders) Music. When she’s not doing that, she’s writing books— Rat Girl was one of my favorite books of 2010—playing shows, being a mom to her four sons, or posting fresh demos and writing essays to accompany them. PW caught up with Hersh just before kicking off her latest tour here in Philly. Between outbursts of joyous laughter, we caught up on all her new projects, her favorite guitar gear and the fine art of playing lead without sounding like the soundtrack to a beer commercial.

Where is the new Throwing Muses record at right now?

The active work we’re doing is sequencing the record, which doesn’t sound very active. But it’s a record where a piece of the song appears in other songs, and it has to work together as a fluid piece that doesn’t sound … repetitious, but sounds repetitious enough that you get the themes that are running through them.

You can’t back up and look at it like you would a painting. You have to sort of live through it the way you would a show. So we’re building a 33-song set list.

You have to keep immersing yourself until it seems smaller and you can see the moving parts.

You can’t be overwhelmed by it. If you are, it’s a reflection of your top-heaviness, and you shouldn’t make anyone pay attention to that! It’s supposed to be the work that you can die after releasing. You know, we all want to die real bad, so we want to feel finished. It has to be perfect.

What about your guitar gear? What are you working with these days?

I like using more the character of the amplifiers than any pedals. But one pedal I’m really in love with is the ElectroHarmonix. But they have to be broken or they don’t sound right, so that’s fairly hard to come by. And I use them more in 50 Foot Wave than I do with the Muses.

Luckily, I had access to a lot of really beautiful amps.

I had to learn a new way to play leads on this record. Usually a lead will follow the same path as a play or a book or a movie: There’s a peak and a denouement. There’s just a way to play a lead that makes sense to your hand and to anyone listening. And they just sounded so lame on this record!

It was like this guitarist walked in that had no idea what was going on. [Laughs] We just had to figure out what the songs wanted, and what they wanted—this sounds so silly—is a kind of noodling. Not

like the Grateful Dead! But these leads that just don’t go anywhere.

You’re making me picture a homeless lead guitarist, like the sexy sax man who just walks in and plays the same thing on whatever song.

But that’s what I was doing! My guitar playing is much more standard than people would guess about me. They can’t hear that because it’s in a song with unusual chords or unusual structures or other things that don’t sound normal. But the head of [record label] 4AD came in to

listen to me put down Throwing Muses leads, and I said, ‘Watch. I’m going to try to play something experimental, and the more takes that go by, it’s just going to evolve into a lead that sounds like a beer commercial. Kind of bluesy, but also really white.’ And that was exactly what happened, of course. Yikes the Zero’s Got Something to Prove His debut, A Kid and His Monsters, shows skills aplenty and has characters to spare.

he Fishtown rapper Yikes The Zero’s playing Tetris at Barcade. He drops a yellow backward L alongside a blue square, slips a red column into the left side of one of those green zig-zag things. He’s killing time before his security guard shift at Union Transfer. When not clocked in, Yikes raps and make beats. Friday night, he’s performing at Kung Fu Necktie (where he also barbacks) to celebrate his new self-released album, A Kid and His Monsters.

“I was the weirdo of the family,” says Yikes, strategically lowering a magenta L Tetrimino. “I used to hide my rhymes ’cause my brother would make fun of me. As I got older, me and my friends would drive around in the whip, drink 40s and freestyle. Then we’d freestyle at parties, and I stopped being afraid to rhyme.”

The name Yikes comes from others rappers doubting him, as in, “Yikes! No way this dude raps!”

“I’d walk into a cypher, and cats were skeptical,” Yikes recalls. “Maybe I didn’t look menacing enough, didn’t look like a typical rapper. I was always the underdog. Eventually, I just had to snatch that shit, then everybody liked my style. But I still haven’t really proven myself. Sometimes I tell people about my music, and they just walk away.”

This self-criticism appears throughout Monsters, often comically, in the different characters Yikes embodies.

“This fuckin’ Yikes,” he says in a high-pitched voice at the end of “They Don’t Rock.” “Fucking jerk bag. Is he still around? Is he still doing that stupid shit? Fucking rapping all over the place?”

“I try to be anamorphic and switch it up,” Yikes says about his vocal style. Like the Madlib alter-ego Quasimoto, he sometimes raps like he’s been sucking helium. Then, on “Cassette Euphony,” he spits bizarro bars with a monotone flow: “Lunging, here come the dragons from out the dungeon, it’s a hundred to one, if they keep coming, let it rain,

“It’s Brothers Grimm-type shit—weird fairytales that are playful and dark, depending on how deep you dig.”

The beats Yikes crafted for Monsters use samples from whatever caught his ears: movies, TV shows, operas, symphonies, Afrofunk choruses, Black Sabbath riffs, shattering glass. And an unidentifiable, monstrous noise lingers across the 14 tracks—some sort of howling, rumbling, clamoring, crashing distortion.

“If I catch a bus driving by my house or a kid saying something, I’ll record it,” he says, delivering a spin-kick to the Double Dragon Level 2 boss’ head. “Sometimes, accidents happen. Sometimes they don’t mean shit; other times they’re beautiful. I’ve had whole songs that were accidents that work out perfectly. I guess I’m lucky.” n Fri., July 27, 7:30pm. $5. And you assumed that, when you did get around to letting him know, he would be delighted. Because he was the one who wanted a relationship at the beginning, right?

Unfortunately, LITL, he took you at your word when you said you weren’t interested in a relationship. Keeping things “purely casual” with you meant he was free to pursue a relationship with someone else.

I can’t help but wonder what he was about to say when you told him to get out. He met someone else, which wasn’t a violation of your rules.

Did that mean things were over between you two (which would make the timing of the last fuck an insult)? Or was he willing to pass on this other girl if you were ready for a relationship (which would make tossing him out before he could elaborate a mistake)? You probably should’ve heard him out.

Go ahead and reach out. Let him know that you were thinking about taking things to the next level (though, ugh to that phrase) before he told you about the other girl. You were starting to fall for him, you hoped he felt the same and you were disappointed. But since he was only doing what you asked—keeping it casual—you can’t fault him for keeping his options open, looking around, dating other girls, etc. And you can’t fault him for failing to read your mind.

Close by telling him that you’d be open to dating—a real, noncasual relationship—if things don’t work out with this other girl. n
