hen the U.S. Supreme Court narrowly upheld the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act two weeks ago, many of Linda Medley’s colleagues at work—like most people—wanted to talk about the landmark decision.

Unlike most people, however, they actually held a brown-bag lunch that afternoon to dig into the details of the court’s 193-page opinion. They were compelled both personally and professionally: Like Medley, they’re all lawyers, employed by the city’s Law Department.

“I really wanted to go—I’m just too swamped here today,” Medley, 42, laments. “I’ll have to print it out and read it later.”

Indeed, Medley works for one of the busiest, most important and most scrutinized areas of the department.

She’s a divisional deputy city solicitor in the Housing Division, handling contracts and providing counsel for the city as it seeks to sell or otherwise dispose of the nearly 10,000 vacant and abandoned properties it currently owns—a quarter of the estimated 40,000 such properties spread throughout Philadelphia. “What we do is a pretty involved process, but the idea is to eliminate blight and generate revenue for the city,” she says.

A self-described workaholic, Medley spends her days advising members of Philadelphia’s Vacant Property Review Committee in hearings to approve or deny applications from people who want to purchase empty lots next door to build a garden, or buildings they intend to turn into businesses or other commercial enterprises. Even the seemingly small transactions, she says, drive neighborhood transformation in ways city residents don’t always notice. “It may seem like nobody’s doing anything, but we are,” she says.

“You look at places like the Temple area—you may drive around there one year and it looks all blighted and the next year or two all these little stores have popped up. It’s a whole involved plan that takes a long time to develop.”

Medley also drafts contracts to ensure applicants follow the many laws and regulations that go along

with acquiring property from the city, and oversees the follow-up issues that arise. “There may be someone who bought a property and they usually have a year to start renovating or doing something with it and maybe they haven’t, so we need to address that,” she explains. “Or there could be someone who’s supposed to renovate a property and instead they sell it to someone for an enormous profit without having done a thing when they bought it from us for fair-market value. There’s a time frame in which you can’t do that, usually a year, and that’s specified in the deed.”

Growing up in Malvern, Medley became interested in law as a way to help people, ideally children, and to serve her community. After majoring in political science during her undergrad years at Rutgers, then graduating from Villanova law school, she spent several years clerking for judges and working as a research staffer at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Philadelphia before getting her “dream job” in 1999: a solicitor position with the city’s Law Department, representing the Department of Human Services. The work was both gratifying and difficult—Medley represented DHS in cases of children being taken out of their homes due to physical or sexual abuse, termination of parental rights, or efforts to keep kids in their homes but get them crucial social services.

“You really have to love helping people or you’re gonna burn out quickly,” she says. “It’s horrible when you see a child with marks on them, but you have to gather the evidence and there’s a process for getting that child out that takes time. Nobody wants to hear that, though.”

Still, she says that the happier stories—kids successfully placed into foster care, for example—made it worthwhile.

After representing DHS for more than a decade, Medley was promoted and moved into the Law Department’s Housing Division last year. “It may not be as direct, but I feel like I’m still helping children and families by helping get rid of blight and making their communities better places to live,” she says.

Even when she’s off the clock, Medley’s still got her job and her personal mission on her mind as president of the Philadelphia chapter of the National Bar Association Women Lawyers Division, a volunteer post she’s held since 2009. The WLD’s primary objective, she explains, is to be a resource for women of color in Philadelphia’s legal community, whether that’s helping in obtaining continuing legal education or professional development, or providing networking opportunities. It’s also an avenue for mentoring young black girls in the city, to show them that a career in law can be a reality.

And while private law practice and its personal financial appeal always beckons, Medley says that working for the city is where she wants to be. “At a [private] firm, you’re often thinking about what’s best for an individual, [but] when you work for a city, you’re thinking about all the citizens, and I’m one of them. television of the past 30 years: The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks. Lynch lived in the neighborhood for a time in the mid-’60s, and the area, which scared the bejeezus out of him, sparked the first flames of his singular, bizarre creative vision.

The Callowhill neighborhood’s a kind of geographical anomaly—not quite Center City, not quite North Philly. Once a thriving center of Philadelphia industry, with grand architecture that rose from the ground a century ago, by the early ’70s that had all changed: The venerable buildings sat virtually frozen in time, all but ignored and left to molder—at least until the late ’90s when a few pioneering developers saw enough promise in the area, which is barely a 10-minute walk from City Hall, to convert a handful of old factories into trendy lofts.

But as Bruhin found out during his forays, despite that slow march toward gentrification, the neighborhood was still in the grips of some of the weirdness and that unsettling, wrong-side-of-the-tracks vibe he’d felt during his first visit. Bruhin wasn’t aware of the Eraserhood moniker until he came across it a few years ago on the city blog Philebrity, which didn’t coin the name but likely helped popularize it. He launched his own blog, Eraserhood, to document his discoveries, share his compelling images and celebrate the neighborhood.

He’s not the only one entranced by it. On Friday, Bruhin joins 26 other visual artists— photographers, painters, illustrators, sculptors and more—for the launch of Eraserhood Forever, an 11-day Lynch-themed art exhibit at the Philadelphia Mausoleum of Contemporary Art, housed inside the former Finney & Son tombstone and mausoleum showroom at 12th and Spring Garden.

PhilaMOCA’s already affixed a 14-foot mural of Henry Spencer, Eraserhead’s toweringhaired, perpetually bewildered protagonist, to its roof—the creation of local artist Evan Cairo. The opening bash will include sets from rockabilly trio Full Blown Cherry and ethereal one-woman synth outfit Void Vision (both local acts are reminiscent of music typically heard in Lynch’s films); a burlesque performance from Francine “The Lucid Dream,” the founder of New York City’s popular “Pink Room: David Lynch Burlesque” show; a reading from Philly comic writer/performer Juliet Hope Wayne; and more.

The exhibit’s not only a celebration of an iconic film and its director, but a declaration of love and allegiance to a neighborhood full of character and history—a place some believe embodies the so-very-Lynchian notion of beauty in decay—that some say is on the verge of, well, being erased.

“There’s still that little edge of mystery and intrigue,” says Bruhin, even as, from his daily vantage point on the third floor of the Wolf Building, he sees the quickening pace of development on the Eraserhood landscape, as well as a host of residents, property owners and business owners embracing change and working hard to make it happen. “How much longer it’s going to be that way, I don’t know.”

he first time Bob Bruhin laid eyes on the Eraserhood, he felt like he was looking at something out of a film noir. Or maybe a creepy horror flick.

It was the early 1980s, and Bruhin, then in his early 20s, had come to Philadelphia on a gray winter’s day to visit his best friend from college, who’d gotten a job at the Inquirer.

Bruhin, who at that point had spent his entire life in rural Chester County, only experiencing Philly through its most touristy areas, sat in the passenger seat as his friend turned onto the cobblestones of Noble Street, across from the Inquirer Building on North Broad, and stopped the car.

Bruhin looked down the narrow, dusky street. It seemed like a valley cutting through menacing concrete mountains looming on either side: to the right, the Terminal Commerce Building, a 14-story, block-wide leviathan that once housed the Reading Railroad headquarters. Opposite it, the Lasher Building, a seven-story art-deco masterpiece, complete with a curious lantern spire on top, that was the one-time home of the prominent Lasher Printing Company.

Further down, Bruhin could dimly make out the shapes of more factories and warehouses, and off in the distance, the three smokestacks of the defunct, slowly rotting Willow Steam Plant rose into the night sky like the evil cousin of the stately white Inquirer Building, creating a forlorn backdrop. Not a soul stirred, though Bruhin wondered what might be hiding in the shadows. The wind rustled some bare branches up ahead. He felt the scene pulling him in like someone terrified of heights feels helplessly drawn toward a lofty railing’s edge.

“I was shocked and frightened and secretly in love with it at the same time,” Bruhin recalls. “I wanted to get out of there as soon as possible, and part of me also wanted to go back and find out more about it.”

It took him a while. In 2006, Bruhin, 52, a software developer, got a job at a company based in the Wolf Building—a former envelope and stationery factory at 12th and Callowhill, right in the heart of the neighborhood that had so affected him 25 years earlier. He began exploring, researching and photographing the area in earnest, reveling in the atmosphere of this strange patchwork of brick-facade factories, run-down garages, modest row homes, weed-choked vacant lots, smoke-blackened stone walls, cobblestone alleys, ominous tunnels and time-worn steel trestles holding up bygone elevated rail lines—all concentrated together in just a few decidedly industrial, highly evocative city blocks.

Roughly bordered east-to-west by Eighth and Broad streets and north-to-south by Spring Garden and Vine streets, the area bears many names: Callowhill, the Loft District, Chinatown North, West Poplar. In 2010, it was officially designated the Callowhill Industrial Historic District by the U.S. National Park Service. But to a subset of Philly’s artsy, imaginative types, to those attracted to the grittier side of urban living, it’s long been the Eraserhood—a nod to Eraserhead, the surreal, nightmarish 1977 head-scramble of a film by David Lynch, the acclaimed director of the some of the most influential films and

tinues to fascinate them the way it once did Lynch—in the face of an evolving neighborhood’s demands for the present and the future, Bruhin and others like him hope that, as redevelopment in the neighborhood continues, everybody will at least pause for a moment and think about what might be lost as well as what’s being gained, and what’s worth holding onto when the talk is of letting go.

impressionistic depiction of the Callowhill neighborhood as bleak, sickly and forbidding—seems to make a case for bulldozing the whole damn place, not preserving it.

In the still-discomfiting black-and-white film, Henry Spencer wanders through a dystopian industrial wasteland, lives in a hellhole of an apartment, becomes father to a grotesque mutant “baby” that won’t stop wailing, encounters a deformed dancing woman who lives in a radiator, and gets decapitated, his head rushed to a factory where his brain is used to make pencil erasers. Put another way: The shit’s fucked up.

While Eraserhead defies easy interpretation, critics and film buffs have long considered Henry a stand-in for Lynch, and the movie a manifestation of the director’s fear of fatherhood and his terror at living in a huge, anxiety-inducing, sporadically violent city for the first time in his life. In interviews, Lynch has often referred to Eraserhead—filmed entirely in Los Angeles over a six-year period after he left Philly—as his own “Philadelphia Story.”

“Philadelphia is the sickest, most corrupt, decaying city filled with fear I ever set foot in in my life,” he famously told Inquirer film critic Carrie Rickey in 1986. “I saw horrible things, horrible, horrible things while I lived there. It was truly inspiring.”

Upon arriving in the city at the end of 1965, at the age of 19, to study painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts on North Broad, Lynch moved into a friend’s apartment at 13th and Wood streets, across from the city morgue. The air was still thick with the smoke and clang of industry, from the paper manufacturers and printing plants that had taken over the old factories to the iron works, machinery companies and coal and lumber yards scattered throughout the neighborhood. Freight trains rumbled regularly along the Reading Railroad lines, and in the evening, when all the workers left, it became filled only with eerie silence and long, sinister shadows. Lynch’s surroundings were a far cry from the idyllic Idaho and Washington towns of his youth.

“He was very terrified of it,” says Peggy Reavey, Lynch’s first wife; she befriended Lynch shortly after he came to town, and they married a couple years later. “He was a kid from the West, and the atmosphere just was not familiar to him.” But she noticed the dramatic impact it was having on his artwork.

“He had been painting much brighter, very beautiful bright oranges, and then he got into the darker stuff,” says Reavey, a painter herself and Chestnut Hill native who currently lives in L.A. “He was probably working with fear inside of him.”

A few years later, Lynch had transitioned

to film and was living with Reavey and their infant daughter Jennifer in a house at 19th and Poplar. Their house got broken into, their windows were shot out, and a young man was murdered—shot in the back of the head—just outside their door. Paralyzed with fear, Lynch mostly hid inside the house while Reavey, pushing a baby carriage, ran errands around town.

In 1970, Lynch was accepted into the American Film Institute in Los Angeles, the family left Philadelphia for good, and Lynch drew from all of that dread and darkness what would eventually become Eraserhead.

PhilaMOCA director Eric Bresler, the 33-year-old who dreamed up the Eraserhood Forever exhibit, is obsessed with

tling mornings. “You had people walking around going to or from work, just going about their lives all normal in this really weird, kinda out-of-time place,” he says, alluding to the very Lynchian notion of the surreal or absurd existing side-by-side with the mundane. Rather than abhor the neighborhood, Bresler’s certain—from the way it’s rendered in Eraserhead—that Lynch was enthralled by it. “[Eraserhead] conjures up a feeling, it gives you a real sense of place,” he says. “He definitely didn’t think it was boring.”

But while Bresler loves those faded, postindustrial aesthetics, he acknowledges that others view the Callowhill area as a blighted dump full of vacant eyesores and trash, a place to get mugged, or worse. There are

Lynch, Eraserhead and the neighborhood that helped spawn it. A decade ago, he lived in a warehouse at Ridge and Noble streets and, like Bruhin, he has explored almost every inch of the place.

“It’s just the strangest, coolest, most amazing place in the city,” says Bresler, noting the faded manufacturing slogans and ads—“The Bicycle With the National Reputation,” “Supplies for Architects, Draughtsman & Engineers”—high up on factory walls; the way the viaduct, with its ivy and gentle grasses spilling over the sides, curves above the streets; and how barren the place could be on a random afternoon, making you feel like you’re the king of some ghost city.

He remembers other comparatively bus-

parallels, he says, between those who don’t get the Eraserhood and those who don’t get Eraserhead. “This neighborhood and its history is somewhat ‘ugly.’ It’s industrial, it’s working-class. It’s the opposite of Rittenhouse [Square]. It’s out of the mainstream thinking of what is good or desirable. It’s off-putting to some people—kind of like David Lynch’s films.”

And Bresler doesn’t want to see the place change much more than it already has: “I just hate sterileness, and whenever neighborhoods are transformed, or knocked down and rebuilt, they end up sterile in one way or another. The city loses its character. We’ve seen it happen in Northern Liberties and Fishtown. I don’t want that to happen here.”

It’s a muggy Saturday afternoon in

June, and Bruhin is taking me on an informal walking tour of the neighborhood, pointing out some of his favorite spots, as well as a couple areas of dispute.

Into the heart of the neighborhood he goes. Past empty Reading Railroad dining car #1186, retired in 1966 and dropped at the corner of Broad and Noble, where it was a diner called the Steak and Bagel Train. Past the electric buzz of PECO’s Callowhill Substation.

Past a three-story, ultra-modern condo building with criss-crossing orange girders—“a monstrosity,” Bruhin sneers—built last year on an empty lot near Prohibition Taproom.

Past lofts where you can spy exposed ducts and fancy artwork on the walls, a Chinese sign manufacturing shop, the hulking old Esslinger’s Brewery building, a taxi repair garage and a homeless shelter where men mill around inside its fenced-in courtyard, while a few others are passed out on the nearby sidewalks.

He stops for a moment at 13th and Wood, where Lynch used to live. The director’s old apartment is long gone—the corner’s a parking lot for U-Haul trucks now.

Bruhin looks up at the Terminal Commerce and Lasher buildings, taking in their sublime art-deco details. “They’re like castles,” he marvels. “They were put here specifically to communicate to the world the strength and nobility of the organizations that created them.” Today, both of these castles are robobuildings: Packed with servers and telecommunications equipment (and very few actual human beings), they’re massive “mission critical” data hubs not only for Philadelphia but much of the Northeastern U.S.—a sterling example of adaptive reuse, Bruhin believes.

“I’m glad they found another use for [these buildings],” he says, “and they didn’t change the facade or tear them down.”

Near the corner of Wood and North Broad comes Bruhin’s first grimace, as he wistfully watches a yellow Caterpillar excavator whack at the skeleton of the former Overland Motor Company Building, bricks tumbling to a dusty heap on the ground. The building’s coming down to make way for the new $17.5 million Pennsylvania Ballet headquarters; the Ballet purchased five structures on the lot, is repurposing three and demolishing two.

According to the Philadelphia historic preservation firm Powers & Company, which led the effort to get the neighborhood designated as the Callowhill Industrial Historic District, Overland was “the most notable example of the Colonial Revival [architecture] style” in the area. “I’m appalled that they’re going to tear down [Overland],” Powers & Co. president Robert Powers fumed to PlanPhilly, an online news operation that covers urban development, last December.

But developer John Gattuso of Liberty Property Trust and chair of the Ballet’s building committee, who facilitated the acquisition of the property, insists Overland couldn’t be repurposed into an adequate rehearsal space and that the building had fallen into unfixable disrepair, including a collapsed roof. “If we could have saved it, we would have,” says Gattuso, “but [demolition] was the decision that was made.” Gattuso adds that the loca-

development to the area (in the process, skyrocketing longtime residents’ property values). Others, most notably the area’s Asian community, want to tear it down to make way for low-income housing for immigrants. With viaduct demolition costs estimated around $50 million, it doesn’t appear to be coming down anytime soon. And with developers still not convinced of the value of putting a park—with its own huge price tag—in this gritty industrial area, the project remains in limbo. Still, city planners are currently working on designs to turn the “SEPTA Spur”—just a tiny section of the viaduct—into a park at an estimated cost of $6 to $7 million, a project backers hope will get under way in 2013.

If it happens, and it’s still a huge “if,” the entrance to the park would be at Broad and Noble—precisely the same location that was Bruhin’s simultaneously scary and alluring portal to the Eraserhood nearly 30 years ago.

“I think it’s an awesome idea,” Bruhin says of

Reuben says. “Some of the cultural institutions don’t like it. The neighborhood association isn’t fond of that characterization.”

Instead, he says, they prefer to call it simply Callowhill (the quaintly traditional; Hannah Callowhill was William Penn’s second wife) or the Loft District (the trendy and desirable)— names more enticing to a certain segment of the population that may not see the romance or beauty in industrial decay.

Not that Bresler has any illusions that one small art show from a bunch of David Lynch fanatics is going to stand in the way of powerful developers determined to reshape the neighborhood however they like. “I’m of the mindset that The Man always wins in the end,” Bresler laughs wryly. “Look at Northern Liberties now—they turned it into Disneyworld for yuppies. Nothing was gonna stop them.”

tion was too desirable to give up.

That doesn’t sit well with Julia Rowe, a 30-year-old West Philly photographer and another Eraserhood obsessive who’s contributed to Bruhin’s blog. She’s worried that Overland is just the first domino to fall. With the building’s demise, she says, “it becomes easier for other developers to say, ‘Well, soand-so tore that building down to do that, so why can’t we do this?’ Pretty soon, all these amazing buildings are gone forever ... We’re losing our connection to the past—who we are and where we came from. I don’t think most people care about that anymore.”

Gattuso sympathizes, to a point. “I think buildings are not held to be sacred enough, but that’s not to say buildings shouldn’t be removed from time to time. Some people think [Philadelphia] should be a dead museum where nothing changes, but this is all part of being a living, breathing, vibrant city.

The Ballet is going to be a dynamic addition to the neighborhood. I think the people who have concerns about this will eventually understand that.”

Turning away from Overland’s destruction, Bruhin heads back to 13th Street and points, one by one, to a handful of buildings and structures that are like stars in a constellation of incipient change.

To the north, there’s the Church of the Assumption on Spring Garden Street, its majestic twin green-copper spires reaching high into the air. Its owner, the Philly nonprofit HIV/AIDS support services agency Siloam, wants to tear the landmark Gothic Revival cathedral down, claiming it doesn’t have the funds for necessary repairs. But the Callowhill Neighborhood Association, arguing that the church is an architectural linchpin in defining the tenor of the area, has been fighting the proposed demolition in court for two years.

All sides are waiting on a Court of Common Pleas judge to rule whether the building can come down.

To the south, at the towering former Goldtex shoe factory at 12th and Vine streets, developers the Post Brothers are converting the building into 160-some high-rise apartments. For years, it sat abandoned and decimated at the edge of the neighborhood, all graffiti, broken windows and weatherbeaten exterior, highly visible from Center City. To some, an intriguing representation of manmade and natural urban decay; to others, the very definition of an eyesore, a building that may as well have been a big flashing neon sign that read “Bad Neighborhood. You Don’t Want to Come Here.” As part of the rehab, the Post Brothers are putting a modern “skin” on the building; it won’t look much like a former factory when they’re done. Bruhin has mixed feelings. “I wish they would preserve the industrial character of the building, but that’s their choice,” he says. “At least they’re not tearing it down.”

And just 50 yards to the east lies the viaduct, source of so much consternation in the neighborhood over the past several years.

While there aren’t really knock-down, drag-out enemies in the struggle to define what the neighborhood will be—mainly just passionate competing visions—even PhilaMOCA calling the show Eraserhood Forever is a provocative act.

After all, notes Gary Reuben, a Philly developer and architect who owns the Wolf Building, where Bruhin works, there are plenty of people instrumental to the future of the neighborhood who despise the “Eraserhood” moniker and the perception it fosters that this is a sketchy, grimy, barren place to visit or inhabit. “A lot of developers don’t like that because they’re afraid of the connotations,”

ping too tightly to the fading physical remnants of an era that doesn’t exist anymore, of placing themselves in the shoes of an artist they admire as they wander around the same streets he was inspired by 50 years ago and ignoring the present realities. It’s understandable, though—feeling surrounded by an increasingly cookie-cutter environment, where one neighborhood becomes virtually indistinguishable from the next, perhaps you hold onto the few places that feel unique and special, that run counter to the prevailing mainstream aesthetic. Maybe it’s the same motivation that drives someone toward Eraserhead instead of the latest Will Ferrell flick at the multiplex.

And certainly, as Rowe points out, the past matters. The buildings and infrastructure of the Eraserhood, Callowhill, the Loft District,

whatever you want to call it, are tangible reminders of Philadelphia’s working-class soul, symbols of both the glory of our industrial age and the day-to-day struggles—and sometimes miserable lives—of the people who propelled it. For some people, keeping that around—not only the grandest architecture in the neighborhood, but the smaller, all-but-forgotten structures that equally contribute to that soul and aesthetic character— is as important to our heritage and identity as preserving the buildings around Independence Mall.

But that has to be balanced with the pragmatic needs and desires of a neighborhood’s residents. “Look, I like the Eraserhood name and the gritty character that implies, and I believe in maintaining the authenticity of the neighborhood,” says Reuben. “But the people in the community want to see things happen. We need more entertainment, more conveniences, more restaurants and cafes.

We want to preserve things but give this place life, too.”

Reuben’s provided a good example of that balance with the century-old Wolf Building, which he’s repurposed into a place that houses design firms, artist studios, social services and environment-centric agencies, private residences and Underground Arts—a sprawling basement performance space—all while lovingly maintaining the original aesthetics of the exterior and hanging onto the old brickwork, vintage plumbing fixtures and freight elevators inside.

And just up the block, Josette Bonafino— along with husband Ian Cross—owns the recently reopened and popular Trestle Inn, where they’ve maintained the appealingly seedy interior but made the menu and drinks more sophisticated and cultivated a wide cross-section of patrons, many of whom never thought of coming to the neighborhood.

She understands the complexities of reconciling the past with the future, of merging the shabby and the bright.

“Decay is not horrible from an intellectual, aesthetic point of view,” says Bonafino. “It can be beautiful. But I don’t know that there’s something intrinsically good, if it’s psychologically healthy, for someone to live next to that. There’s an intellectual component, and then there’s reality. It’s a big struggle. Those things can co-exist, but you need to take human realities into consideration.”

“You can throw some light into the dark places,” Bruhin agrees. “You can make it all work.”

And Bresler gets all that. But, he smiles stubbornly, “There’s no stopping progress, but we’ll gladly hang on to the past. All you can do is promote the Eraserhood name and just remind people what it used to be. Even if [PhilaMOCA is] the last place standing, we’re gonna play our small part with our Eraserhead mural on the side of the building and be that reminder.” n

In the age of The Room, Troll 2, Birdemic and the Cam’ron-directed Killa Season, is there even room for Plan 9 From Outer Space? Slow and only spottily terrible, the alleged “Worst Movie Ever” isn’t even Edward D. Wood Jr.’s worst/funniest. (Glen or Glenda? is more insane.) You can blame its reverse acclaim on right-wing film critic Michael Medved and his brother Harry, who named it history’s baddest film in the same book where they trashed Last Year at Marienbad and easy (and undeserving) targets like Peter Bogdanovich’s At Long Last Love. It will be interesting to see how Plan 9 holds up to today’s cinematic nadirs, especially given this Secret Cinema event’s setting: Laurel Hill Cemetery. (The original title, after all, was Grave Robbers From Outer Space.) The Scorpions, out of Germany, peaked in a mid-1980s explosion of super-clean, super-extravagant, dual guitar-shredding metal, vying with bands like Judas Priest, Def Leppard and, ahem, Loverboy for MTV’s attention. Nearly

two decades later, their 1984 single, “Rock You Like a Hurricane,” remains a staple of sports arenas and hard-rock stations everywhere, balancing surgically-precise guitar aggression with catchy, well-executed vocals. Their 2010 tour, celebrating 18th studio album Sting in the Tail, was supposed to be the band’s last, but rock ’n’ roll is hard to kill. In Philly, they’ll no doubt give a nod to local writing partner Eric Bazilian (also of the Hooters), who shares credit on roughly half the songs from the Scorpions’ last two albums. 13 Crocodiles Fat Possum Records damn well knows its duos.

They have a history of signing a bunch of good ones: Black Keys, T Model Ford and Spam, Bass Drum of Death. So, in ’09, when they inked a deal with Crocodiles, a two-piece from the “whale’s vagina,” meaning San Diego, those in the know tuned their ears in. Of course, it didn’t hurt that the two in the group—Brandon Welchez and Charles Rowell—came from an impressive pedigree, spending time in hardcore heroes like A Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower and Some Girls. Those bands blew wigs back with scream-centric force. But Crocodiles came out the gate shooting fuzzy, warm Jesus and Mary Chain-like hugs from their amps, choosing this time not to break hips, but make them sway. The guys have added a few more instruments since their debut—live drums, keyboards—and, like the Keys before them, the result is a band that’s more fully realized, more versatile, lusher and readier than ever for prime

El-P “So you should pump this shit/Like they do in the future,” goes the riled-up chorus of “The Full Retard,” off Cancer 4 Cure, the Mayreleased third LP from El-P. If this banger and Cancer indicate what will be happening years from now, the future is destined to be a place ruled by uber tangled, rapidly delivered, ultra intellectual raps, plus mistrust, resentment, self-doubt and more of the MC’s favorite subjects. The Blade Runner-smitten Brooklynite born Jaime Meline has long maintained a highly motivated hustle—his own discography and guest verses aside, El-P founded crucial indie hip-hop label Definitive Jux and has grown increasingly interested in production (beats on the new R.A.P. Music from tour partner Killer Mike are all El’s doing)—but Cancer marks an apex of agility and agitation.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart emerged in 2009 with a debut that captured the rainy day jangle of mid-1980s British pop, nods to the Smiths and the Jesus & Mary Chain embedded in bittersweet paeans to young love and library sex. The band seemed likely to join a wave of fuzz-crusted romantics—Wild Nothing, Yuck and others—that emerged in the ’00s. Then the band’s Belong took a swerve toward 1980s alterna-rock, submerging pretty pop hooks in oceanic guitar roar a la the Smashing Pumpkins. Live, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart let their songs speak for themselves, supporting their swooning melodies with only the most understated showmanship. In the sticky 100-degree heat, the last thing you want to do is a 10K run. But apparel and footwear maker Merrell, who is hosting the 3rd annual mud and obstacle course series in the city, has found a winning formula to get adults out and running in the middle of July.

The secret? Break up the running with a series of water crossings, mud pits and unexpected challenges in Fairmount Park. Best Coast Just as there’s no convincing the haters that Best Coast and Bethany Costentino aren’t deserving of scorn, there’s no use trying to tell their biggest fans they aren’t worthy of worship. People remain bitterly divided on the group—praising them as sun-soaked saviors of lush guitar-centric dreamscapes or saying their music will reduce your brain to “liquid shit,” as PW’s own Elliott Sharp did in these pages early last year. Both have a point. Let’s all agree on one thing: Best Coast’s recent cover of Fleetwood Mac’s 1975 smash hit “Rihannon”— where they swapped the original’s dark, witchy melancholia with wake-and-bake good vibes and Stevie Nicks’ guttural vocal bite with Costentino’s kitten lick—is absolute dog shit. b.MC 8:30pm. $18-$20. There’s serenity but also a restless spark in the music of Surface to Air. Jonathan Golberger’s acoustic guitar and Jonti Siman’s upright bass give a hint of stripped-down folk and jazz.

Rohin Khemani’s tabla and percussion bring an energized North Indian element, pushing the trio into open improvised terrain. The eponymous debut is mostly original, but even the cover of “Heysátan” by Sigur Rós and the theme from Blood Simple end up sounding like originals. his week, REV Theatre Company flips the script on Shakespeare with a gritty remake of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Occupying an asphalt lot between the architecturally thrilling Broad Street Ministry and a crumbling vacant building, director Rosey Hay’s production moves the story from the usual bucolic woods to the urban jungle. Gritty and erotic, muscular and poetic, REV’s Midsummer is given a contemporary, edgy look with colorful day-glo costumes that appear to have been stolen from David Bowie’s closet. Using aluminum ladders to represent trees in an enchanted forest and kiddie pools as magical fountains, Hay says REV’s production is “essentially and intentionally anti-pastoral.” Hay spent her early days in theater as an assistant director at England’s famed Royal Shakespeare Company, and she is one of the few directors capable of re-invigorating the Bard’s work without sacrificing the play’s language or creative vision. suffering through, is a cool plateful of noodles, chashu pork, mushrooms, tomago, thin-sliced cucumbers, bean sprouts and pickled ginger, dressed with a sesame-soy vinaigrette. It’s a light, flavorful option—perfect in the summer.

All of these are wonderfully successful meals-in-a-bowl; if you work in the area, it’s a great under-$10 lunchtime option. Or dinner. Or night-out snack. Only the pork buns left me a bit cold—all the flavors were there, the sweet and the gently spicy harmonizing well. Just a bit more brightness would have really allowed them all to pop. But that’s a minor issue, and I’d certainly order those buns again. But not too many—the key here is to save as much room as possible for steaming bowlfuls of some seriously addictive ramen. For the money, and in terms of executing the concept, the team behind Nom Nom is doing almost everything right. And certainly enough to help guests overcome whatever residual ramen issues they may still be dealing with from their youth. n

Beneath their slippery exterior lie noodles of real structure, a toothiness that manages to remain throughout a half-hour of slurping from the hot broth.

Shoyu is more savory still—the addition of soy sauce highlights the darker flavors of the broth, the meatiness of it. Seaweed amps up the salinity as well, without taking it over the top, and the context of that combination makes the pork belly seem almost sweeter as a result. I ordered mine with a soy-marinated soft-boiled egg, and the tendrils of semi-liquid yolk that crawled throughout the bowl raised the stakes even higher.

Karai miso sizzles with a pleasant, tingling heat. The broth itself, a creamy miso tonkotsu, glows sunset-toned, and the sweet-earthy black garlic sauce atop the pork belly provides an excellent counterpart.

amen, in a number of important ways, resembles Brussels sprouts. Not physically, of course, but from a reputational standpoint. Let me explain.

For most of us, childhood dinners would occasionally be marred by foul-smelling dishes of boiled sprouts, their cabbage-y funk wafting over everything else at the table and lending it all a vaguely Dickensian, another-brick-in-the-wall sort of menace. Only in adulthood do many of us realize how delicious these much-maligned orbs can be—seared off with some rendered bacon fat, they’re magnificent.

Ramen has suffered a similar fate.

I grew up on the blood-pressurespiking packets of dried starch as a go-to after-school snack. Then, in college, the little pouches became synonymous with the inevitable hangover they’d just barely stave off when consumed at 3 a.m. alongside a gallon of Gatorade.

But ramen, as Philadelphians are being reminded ever more frequently these days, has the potential to be one of the more deeply comforting and affordable meals around. And Nom Nom Ramen, on 18th Street just off of Market, is doing a nice job of promoting it.

The space is humble, but bright and cheerful with parasols gently twisting over the tables, and up-beat, vaguely punk music running through the speakers. The menu is limited almost exclusively to ramen, and it’s a focus that pays off.

Shio is arguably the standardbearer here. It’s built on the base of a tonkotsu broth, amped up with salt and white soy sauce, that benefits from having been simmered with pork bone. The resulting savoriness is remarkable for both its depth of flavor as well as its surprising lightness. Kikurage mushroom strands are joined by pickled ginger, snappy bamboo and bright scallions. Nom Nom’s excellent chashu pork belly— meltingly tender and delicious—sits off to the side with a sprinkle of sesame seeds, and all of it is anchored by perfectly cooked noodles.

Those noodles, in fact, do more than just provide heft to the various options on offer here: They act as sponges, distilling and combining the disparate flavors in each bowl, tying everything together. From a textural

The new craft-cocktail bar’s owner, Lêe, spent months driving around the U.S., exploring its various food and drink cultures; aside from clever drink names, the experience left him resolved to build a place whose bartenders would serve high-quality well liquors without snooty pretension. aking their cue from wall taggers, streetwalkers and creatures of the night, current Fabric Workshop and Museum artists-in-residence Pae White, Mark Bradford and Carlos Avendaño may all use the city differently, but they find common ground in the street.

Los Angeles-based White’s site-specific project “Summer XX” (2012) traffics in mourning, memory and your ability to speak Spanish. Moved by the death of a mentor, White uses the cavernous space at the Fabric Workshop to transform some simple graffiti from a wall near her studio in L.A. into an epitaph writ large. Stretching the length of the wall, the phrase “HASTA LA MUERTE” forms the locus of a matrix of crimson yarn. Each woven letter stretches across a black wall, its tension held in perfect balance by hundreds of threads anchored to the opposite wall by small metal hooks. As you pass through the sculpture, your perspective shifts radically; strings align and diverge, cross and blur. The effect is emotionally stirring: a promise written in ligaments, a pact made in blood. “Summer XX” offers us the visual schema for a tenuous connection to something almost out of reach: It thrums with life even as it points toward death.

Where White’s sculpture envelopes the viewer, Los-Angeles based artist Mark Bradford’s large-scale wall installation, “Geppetto” (2012), sits coolly at a distance.

Two thousand newsprint pages have been pasted flat on the wall. Their charcoal tones combine to create the illusion of a slate that seems less optimistically blank than grimly evacuated of content.

Bradford’s titular nod to the penniless woodcarver who created Pinocchio is mystifying. (The fact that there’s something wooden about the piece seems not to be the connection Bradford hoped to make). As he so often does, Bradford has arranged the sheets here layer upon layer, but Geppetto lacks the toothy texture of his previous paintings. The sheer scale of the pattern dwarfs any subtle gradation of tone on any individual page; the newsprint roundly resists three-dimensionality, even if it seems to be precisely what it needs. If Bradford—like Geppetto—might be considered a master craftsman when it comes to handling the mixed-media materials with which he often works, then he seems to flounder in the papery thin world newsprint in “Geppetto.”

The best thing about Bradford’s exhibition turns out not to be part of the show at all. “2 Videos,” a video collaboration

between Bradford and Philadelphia-based Carlos Avendaño, was originally conceived as a separate exhibition for the Fabric Workshop’s New Temporary Contemporary space next door but was relocated to the same floor as Bradford’s “Geppetto” due to remodeling. This is a lucky strike.

The videos serve to activate the otherwise impassive “Geppetto,” establishing the newsprint pages as so many gray squares of pavement on the street, and then taking us for a walk. Bradford’s “Niagara” (2005) shows the back of a young man in a white tank and yellow shorts walking jauntily away from the camera. As he recedes, his body takes up less of the screen and we see more of his surroundings: a chain-link fence to the left, a busy street to the right, cracked pavement and litter underfoot.

The block may be gritty, but the man in the yellow shorts treats it like a catwalk; as he struts his stuff, we’re drawn to follow him down the street.

Avendaño’s “Brenda” (2012) offers a more glamorous take on urban exhibitionism. Taped in 1998 during a Halloween street bash on Santa Monica Boulevard, Avendaño’s slow-motion black-and-white footage of drag queens unfolds with the voluptuous vamp of old Hollywood. Familiar tropes of seduction are on shameless display: batting eyelashes, glistening lips and exotic furs. George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” heightens the schmaltz, but also the magic.

Avendaño’s flirtatious drag queen, Bradford’s departing flâneur and White’s promise to endure until death join together to form a melancholic chorus: “Come hither,” they seems to implore us, “come back, never leave.” n Through late summer. six playwrights collaborate with a director, dramaturge and actors to develop their new work. Each year, the conference concludes with a free, staged reading of each play. For some of the plays, it’s the first time they will be exposed to an audience, which PlayPenn’s artistic director Paul Meshejian views as an essential part of the developmental process. “The audience is the final piece in the puzzle,” he explains.

“The only way you can make sense of what you have is to put it in front of an audience.

Until an audience sees the work, it doesn’t have any meaning.”

The month’s final free performance is the annual Shakespeare offering in Clark Park. Staged in West Philly’s greenest space, the company’s sixth summer of free outdoor theater features director Rebecca Wright’s staging of the Bard’s raucous comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor. The audience for SCP’s production reflects the community around the park and is among the most diverse in local theater. Managing director Adam Travia says that of the 3,500 theatergoers who attend the five performances each summer, many are experiencing live professional theater for the first time— which just goes to show how important free can be. n

here is a perception shared by many that theater is expensive to attend and therefore is an art form enjoyed exclusively by the well-to-do.

That may be true for Broadway, but in Philly there’s affordable theater everywhere you turn. And this month, there are several events in the area that are better than cheap—they’re free.

The three full productions are Commonwealth Classic Theatre Company’s Our Town (July 12-28); REV Theatre Company’s urban punk version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which plays in an innovative, physical production in a parking lot on the Avenue of the Arts (July 14-15); and Shakespeare in Clark Park’s The Merry Wives of Windsor (July 25-29). In addition, PlayPenn is offering readings of the six plays developed at the new-play conference on July 19-22 at the Adrienne Theater.

The first and most ambitious of the four offerings in terms of the number of performances is Our Town, which is staging Thornton Wilder’s masterpiece in 13 public spaces in the Philadelphia area, including a July 15 visit to Love Park. (The play was written to be staged without sets or elaborate design of any kind, which makes it the perfect play for an outdoor production.)

One of the most innovative plays ever conceived, Our Town is a groundbreaking theatrical work that embraces the artifice of theater to investigate the complex realities of everyday life. Wilder famously described his play as exploring “the life of a village set against the life of the stars.”

It’s an appropriate description for a cosmic work that explores the unpredictable journey that is life.

In director Allen Radway’s production, the lives of the town’s characters will literally unfold beneath a starry sky. In the vision of Commonwealth producing artistic director Mary Ann Baldwin, the play is not about the town, but the people in it—they are ordinary, and therefore serve as representatives for all humankind.

“Theater needs to go out to the people” says Baldwin, explaining the company’s populist approach and its desire to perform in a wide array of communities.

“We embrace the opportunity to offer our productions out of doors, because it offers an exhilarating experience, and it reflects something liberating, basic and elemental in the plays we choose to do.”

Also embracing the importance of bringing theater to the people is PlayPenn, an organization dedicated solely to the development of new work. PlayPenn hosts a two-week conference, during which time

Faith, Love and Glam Rock Dreams and documentaries light up the 18th annual QFest.

QFest, the East Coast’s largest LGBT film festival, offers two weeks crammed with dozens of films, their variety of form and subject matter reflecting the diversity of the LGBT world, as well as movie-making in general. QFest’s opening-night choice jumps back and forth in the life of its titular young lead, played by Fabio Costaprado as a young adult and Quentin Araujo as a boy. Neither age is ideal: As a kid, Elliot must contend with his low-income mother’s abusive boyfriend, while his grown-up self stumbles upon one romantic disappointment after another. Director Terracino’s ambition and his ability to confront life’s disappointments head-on somewhat atone for the amateurish staging and acting (Costrapado, in particular, is too goofy for such a dark meditation), as well as an ending that needn’t be so upbeat. Sexual fluidity, alas, is only there for plot fodder, leaving one with little but energetic rehashes of the genre’s cliches: The half-point tonal shift; the montage of bad dates; instantly dated pop culture references (Precious, Black Swan, Zima); the increasingly dire notion that every supporting actor should act like an ad-libbing grotesque. The jury’s still out on James Dean’s orientation, but Matthew Mishory’s self-consciously arty feature debut takes claims he was gay and fantasizes about them. James Preston, who looks like Dean if you say so,

dent in the comfort of their parents’ living rooms and the sanctuary of their church’s youth group, that is until Tim’s homosexuality is matter-of-factly noted. Suddenly unable to avoid contemplating adulthood, they struggle to maintain their friendship while also embracing their newfound individuality. They negotiate issues like the loss of faith and sexuality with more maturity than some of the adults in their lives, especially Austin, the deeply closeted choir director portrayed by Cone. But if the teens rely on their own wits, neither the adults nor the institutions they represent are caricatured. In a nice touch, the story takes place during the dynamic period between the end of high school and the friends’ first winter break, which also happens to include Easter and Christmas. The young actors rise to the challenge, especially Allison Torem, who plays Laura, the conservative Christian. Her character lacks Brea’s beauty and poise, and unlike Tim, it may be hard for audiences to root for her, but Cone’s script gives her ample room to develop. (R.S.) invite friends to Brooklyn for a soiree in their spacious backyard, which, for one day at least, functions as an Arcadian retreat.

Their clique is an attractive lot, including a sleep-deprived surgeon and an amiable stoner. As the alcohol flows, tongues wag, but Will remains tight-lipped and brooding. Mateo’s present, a handycam, allows everyone to speak directly to the camera and, unconsciously, expose themselves, but the device is trite. These bourgeois bohemians discuss weighty themes like gay marriage and immigration rights, but because they already agree with one another, there’s no genuine dialogue, and the lone Log Cabin Republican is quickly dispatched. As the buzz fades, infidelities are discovered, secrets revealed, and everyone cries a lot, especially Mateo. Pretentious chit-chat can be amusing, but the movie’s sources of dramatic tension are unbelievable: Turning 30 is only this calamitous to narcissists, and it’s difficult to imagine that Will’s older sister could be so grotesquely homophobic.

Warm, charming and well-spoken, Bishop Gene Robinson is no one’s idea of a controversial firebrand, and he wouldn’t be were he not openly homosexual. Macky Alston’s doc largely makes an emotional plea for him as he fights to allow gays positions in the Episcopal Church. What results is moving, albeit a one-note slog, given that Alston almost never engages with the other side, some people of which seem as nice and articulate as Robinson. (One scene finds an official in tears, trying to explain why she’s still resistant to homosexuality.) It’s too busy doing a victory lap to get an idea of the depth of the issue among the Church. Six Pack Six Actors Who Returned to Movies Late in Their Lives

By Matt Prigge mprigge@philadelphiaweekly.com Groucho Marx: As the Marx Brothers’ film career waned, Groucho unexpectedly segued into a second act as the ad-libbing host of You Bet Your Life.

He only returned to cinema for bit parts, including Skidoo, Otto Preminger’s insane 1968 mockery of an LSD counterculture comedy, in which he played a mobster king named God. Groucho’s timing is depressingly off, but he does cap off the film (and his film career) smoking pot with Austin Pendleton in a sailboat. (In the ’80s, Yippie co-founder Paul Krassner alleged in High Times that Groucho dropped acid with him as prep.)

Lillian Gish: The career of the First Lady of American Cinema started as muse to D.W. Griffith, then wound up spanning 75 years. She was largely AWOL during the ’70s before popping up in Robert Altman’s A Wedding (1978). In her 90s, there came a brief Gish-a-thon: The dog movie Hambone and Hollie (1984), Sweet Liberty (1986) and, finally, opposite the comparatively young Bette Davis, in The Whales of August (1987).

Lena Horne: A performer since her teens, this raging beauty aimed to be the first black movie superstar. But despite two high profile roles—in Cabin in the Sky and Stormy Weather (both in 1943)—she rarely achieved more than one-off musical numbers, losing out big roles to the likes of Dorothy Dandridge.

Her home was the stage, and she was enough of a legend to return to film as Glinda the Good Witch in 1978’s The Wiz.

Savage Love Messy? Problematic? Provocative? Of course. It’s Oliver Stone.

erhaps realizing how badly he fumbled the ball with 2010’s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps—a film that, ironically enough, I have never been able to stay awake all the way through—Oliver Stone takes another shot at modern capitalism with Savages. Based on a clipped, bloody crime novel by Don Winslow, it’s an unrepentantly trashy, lurid genre picture—quite the unlikely Trojan horse for Stone’s scattergun social satire. But Savages is also visually dazzling, at times bluntly simplistic and over-written, boasting a couple of bravura performances and breathtaking set-pieces, even though it’s all a smidge overlong and sometimes jarringly misogynist.

In other words, it’s an Oliver Stone movie.

We begin in Laguna Beach, which cinematographer Dan Mindel has shot like heaven on Earth, where hippydippy O (Blake Lively) frolics in the surf and rambles at length in what we can only assume is intentionally inane voice-over about her blissed-out existence as part of a groovy ménagea-trois with millionaire marijuana entrepreneurs Ben (Aaron Johnson) and Chon (Taylor Kitsch.)

They’re determinedly as yin and yang as any writer’s device since Barnes and Elias in Stone’s own Platoon. Ben is a dreadlocked Buddhist who fancies himself the Bono of the drug trade, spending a majority of his ill-gotten gains bringing clean water to impoverished villages in Indonesia. Chon is scarred from tours in both Afghanistan and Iraq and always itching for a fight.

Or, as Lively’s O helpfully explains: “Chon is always trying to fuck the war out of himself. I have orgasms. He has wargasms.”

Trouble arrives in paradise when a ruthless Tijuana cartel wants to buy out this family business. Salma Hayek shows up in full vamp dragon-lady mode—complete with a Bettie Page wig and threats to “go after your whore mother next”—and our crazy kids should probably figure out this gang means business when they send webcam videos of henchman Lado (Benicio Del Toro) nonchalantly kicking around severed heads like soccer balls.

There’s a delicious supporting turn from John Travolta, all paunchy and dewigged as a cheerfully corrupt, doubledealing DEA agent charged with issuing most of Stone’s thesis statements. “In

this economy, just be happy you’ve got a product people still want to buy. But Wal-Mart wants it now. And you don’t fuck with Wal-Mart.” So the stage is set for a battle royale in which a large corporation is trying to gobble up our local mom-and-pop store. Except, in this case, Mom and Pop sell weed with a 33 percent THC count.

Naturally, the kids fuck with WalMart, so the next step is for O to find herself kidnapped and chained in a basement, subject to the creepy erotic insinuations of Del Toro at his most grandiosely baroque. A spoiled SoCal brat to the end, O bristles at a diet of cheap pizza and demands that her tormentors “bring a salad once in a while.”

Stone has never been a subtle filmmaker, and honestly, who wants him to be? My favorite flourish is when Ben and Chon take the fight to the cartel in true underdog fashion—borrowing insurgent techniques that the latter learned the hard way in the Middle East, knocking these foreign invaders back on their heels with sniper attacks and roadside IEDs. Juicy stuff.

Savages has a pulpy kick, one you’ll wish the movie could maintain just a bit more consistently. The script (by Stone, Winslow and Shane Salerno) gets a bit bogged down in double-crosses during a fatty midsection, and the director’s patented multiple-film stock razzledazzle feels weirdly reserved by today’s flutter-cut standards.

In the lead roles, Johnson and Lively are dead-weight pretty nothings, vacant and adrift. The good news is that Kitsch—who had a rough year headlin-

ing a couple high-profile bombs to little effect—here steps back into fine Friday Night Lights form as a valiant, if somewhat sketchy, sidekick.

Del Toro and Travolta appear to be having the time of their lives, particularly during a convoluted expository sequence that begins with a threat of violence and somehow ascends to heights of over-acting nirvana simply by the way Del Toro chooses to menace Travolta’s sandwich instead of the man.

Stone’s most audacious gambit is a switchback double-ending gimmick that caused my preview audience to howl obscenities at the screen in groans of visceral betrayal. Yet the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. Contrasting adolescent romantic nihilism with a far more insidious triumph of Big Business expediency, he manages to make “happily ever after” feel far bleaker than all the carnage that has come before—and a slow-motion victory strut by a former king of the dance floor might be the most cynical shot of this filmmaker’s entire career.

Savages is messy and electric, as deeply problematic as it is provocative.

In other words, it’s an Oliver Stone movie. n

Here and Now Former Slum Villager eLZhi has got a new state of mind.

LZhi has been going through a lot.

He won’t exactly say what—just that he’s been going through a lot.

Whatever the Detroit-bred MC has been experiencing has made him get deeper and more introspective in his music. “I went through a lot these couple of years and, you know, I wanted to basically get a little bit more personal—not only just for the fans’ sake, but for mine’s too,” says eLZhi (real name: Jason Powers), calling from the Motor City. “Just me putting out what I put down in the studio was kind of therapeutic for me. So, it kind of worked in both ways.”

Is it safe to say that eLZhi’s departure from Detroit hip-hop crew Slum Village fueled this new creative spark? “That’s part of it,” he divulges. “That’s part of what was going on.”

In 2001, eLZhi, already an established MC in the Detroit hip-hop scene, joined Slum Village, making his debut with the group on their 2002 album, Trinity (Past, Present and Future). Slum Village is itself a group that’s been through a lot, with prized producer Jay Dee (who would go on as hip-hop legend J Dilla) departing before eLZhi joined, then later dying of lupus in 2006. MC Baatin, another member of the group, would also pass away in 2009, dying of unknown circumstances in his Detroit home. ELZhi himself would cut off all ties with Slum Village in 2010, after he learned, via Twitter, that he was terminated from the group. He would later say that RJ Rice, founder of Slum Village’s longtime label Barak, sought to break them up when eLZhi hired new management for himself.

Although a Slum Village reunion will never be in the cards for him (“No way on that,” he confirms), he’s thankful to the group for teaching him about business, he says—“just to make sure that I have the proper people in place to watch over me and have my back.”

ELZhi kept himself quite busy after he left Village. Mostly, he worked on ELmatic, his 2011 mixtape tribute to Nas’ classic 1994 debut Illmatic. Although eLZhi cites Illmatic as one of the dopest albums ever made, the idea to do a salute wasn’t his. It was famed Detroit producer/DJ HouseShoes (with whom eLZHi collaborated in the late ’90s on the Out of Focus EP) who came up with the idea.

Unfortunately, he wouldn’t be the only MC at the time to come up with his own Illmatic tribute. As eLZhi was working on ELmatic, West Coast rapper Fashawn released Ode to Illmatic in 2010. “I didn’t even know he was dropping his,” remembers eLZhi. “And I heard it, and it was

pretty good. I like Fashawn as an MC.” Even with that mixtape out on the streets, eLZhi continued with ELmatic, getting Detroit funk group Will Sessions to provide its live-music backdrop. “I just came up with a bright idea one day to have a band play everything,” he says.

“They have a name in the underground hip-hop community, as well as the funk community.”

While eLZhi has it on good authority that Nas listened to ELmatic and enjoyed it immensely, don’t expect Nas and eLZhi to get together for a Watch the Throne-style pairing anytime soon. “I’m pretty sure that would be very hot,” he says. “But I feel like, you know, it’s a game. You gotta build your name up for any kind of high-powered collabo to happen like that. So, that’s why I’m making sure this next project is incredible as far as, like, my standpoint. And I hope people feel it.”

Indeed, eLZhi is working on an upcoming album that he says will have “just a lot more personal records.” So, if you too are wondering what trials and tribulations he’s been dealing with to make him take this creative detour as an MC, it looks like we’re all just gonna have to wait until it comes out. n Mon., July 16, 9pm. He brings up three key inspirations for his style, with the first being a jazz drummer he’s frequently cited and the second referencing his collection of exotic animals: “Me, I was playing from the power of Gene Krupa’s drums, from the power of my lions and tigers, and from the powers of surfing—all three put together.”

Despite his age and diabetes, Dale is touring his ass off again. With ticket prices getting increasingly ridonkulous, it looks like tribute bands have become a cheaper alternative for cash-strapped fans. Of course, the more famous the band, the more cover groups there are, forcing some rock homage acts to utilize a hook in order to stand out in the crowd. With a megastar group like Metallica, there are mobs of these, like Beatallica (who mix Metallica songs with Beatles songs) and Metallagher (who mix Metallica songs with the melon-smashing antics of Gallagher). In the case of Misstallica, the Philly-based all-girl almost Metallica, they’ve found a way to distinguish themselves from the rest of the pack without seeming so … gimmicky. So, no matter how entertaining “Summer’s Eve” or “... And Vajayjays For All” would be, there’s no women-focused lyric changing—just phenomenal female musicians playing the thrashy licks that we all know and love. Rounding out Saturday’s bill are tributes to the other members of the Big Faux 4: Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth. (Bryan Bierman)

ertain thrones exist in a state of perpetual flux.

Titles like the NFL champion and the Academy Award for Best Actress are extremely likely to shift from year to year, and our culture will never agree on the greatest rapper, the best female pop star or if a young guard is truly the next Michael Jordan. On the flip side, a handful of other thrones are rock-solid entities that have not been, and will never go, seriously challenged. Dick Dale’s title of King of the Surf Guitar is the finest example of this. It’s a role he’s embraced yet also despised for how it has stereotyped his career. However, as a pioneer and icon of surf rock, his status is immutable. Plus, since no current notables are out there making surf music, add an extra layer of concrete to said status. Still, if anyone deserves an award as grandiose as being named the monarch of an entire sub-genre, why not have it be a fascinating figure who is prone to indulging in grandiosity himself?

Born Richard Monsour, the 75-year-old Dale has been in the music biz for at least a half-century, experiencing varying waves of popularity along the way. He’s been a rising, suit-clad dreamboat (a 1963 Life magazine story described him as “a thumping teenage idol who is part evangelist, part Pied Piper and all success”), a rock ’n’ roller working in a humdrum doo-wop-influenced style, a guitarist with a thunderous staccato style and an ampannihilating demand for loudness, and a relatively obscure musician whose career received an unexpected jolt in 1994 when Quentin Tarantino used his “Misirlou” to score the opening of Pulp Fiction. The Greek-folk-songturned-scorcher that first appeared on 1962’s Surfers’ Choice is a missile of finely tuned reverb and virile strumming that aims to spark instant movement. Dale has long used spirited language to describe how much impact he wants his songs to create, and surf rock’s most famous recording conveys the thrill of motion without a word.

For his part, the guitarist has played up the surfing connections but is someone to be taken seriously. He used to carry his surf board to the stage and then turn it over to reveal his guitar, but he also surfed himself. It was the fans, he says, who crowned him the King of the Surf Guitar.
