Funny girl: Bernhard plays the Queen at World Cafe Live in Wilmington this weekend.

WHAT’S HAPPENING — BEFORE IT HAPPENS ... COM EDY

Sandra Bernhard

Miss Sandy is an absolute icon. She has It. Her talents are many. She sings with a full, capable and brassy bombast, her breath control is that of an expert award-winning slam poet, and her wit is as sharp as the blade she’ll threaten to cut you with if you try to fuck with her. A viciously smart feminist and bi activist, she’s always on top of current events, so she’ll no doubt have some outrageously astute quips about Holly Lobby or Catholics for Obama. On the 2006-released Everything Bad & Beautiful, she brilliantly puts Condoleezza Rice and Rosa Parks together in a dreamlike dialogue that is so on point. Clearly, Rosa took Condi to school. Sadly, what most folks associate her with is her groundbreaking six-year run as Nancy Bartlett on Roseanne, where she trailblazed as an openly queer character, or as one of Madonna’s best friends, thanks to Madonna: Truth or Dare. But Bernhard’s career started in the late ‘70s, when she was moonlighting at the Comedy Store and doing nails at a chi-chi salon in Hollywood. In 1982, she was cast by Martin Scorcese in The King of Comedy, but it was her first two comedy albums—I’m Your Woman in ‘85 and Without You I’m Nothing two years later—that cemented her place in the annals. The rare tape or LP of either classic touchpoint in her career fetches huge prices at auctions. Bernhard’s early years in Flint, MI and Scottsdale, AZ—and of course, motherhood—certainly feed the 59-year-old comedienne’s joke arsenal, but so does celebrity culture and her uber-famous pals (see “Iman” from the gut-splitting I Love Being Me, Don’t You?). Though Obama may be more her speed, get her going on Bush, Cheney and the Reagans, and you won’t be sorry. Chutzpah’s a word that folks love to bandy about when they talk about her, but she’s got more than that: balls, brains, and loads of heart and soul, too. // BILL CHENEVERT Sun., July 13, 8pm. $30. Ron Lambert and Christopher Moss: Gist During our unending quest to achieve “perfection”—be it via our jobs, our homes, our bodies or the gadgets we acquire— more often than not, we fallible humans often tend to lose sight of the bigger picture, like the people with whom the Universe has tasked us to share this earthly experience. In an attempt to shed light on this fascinating phenomenon, performance and exhibition space Grizzly Grizzly presents Gist, a visual study through painting and sculpture, that put the focus on small things that make up the larger entirety. Inspired by the Gestalt Theory’s concept of “gist memory,” artists Ron Lambert and Christopher Moss attempt to convey the idea that the human mind considers an entire object before registering its components, suggesting the whole is, in fact, greater than the sum of its parts. Lambert’s provocative sculptures combine building materials and everyday domestic items intertwined with organic forms, illustrating our drive to seek the superlative while finding beauty—and acceptance—in our failed attempts. And Moss’ 15 paintings are arranged in a way that are meant to appear chaotic and frenetic at first glance, but make sense when viewed individually, then as a unit. The word “gist” defines the essence of something, an overall understanding of an object or an idea. Grizzly Grizzly’s thoughtprovoking exhibit challenges visitors to understand—and ultimately, appreciate—the gist of our existence. // KENNEDY ALLEN 6pm. Free. On display through Aug. 1. The Go-Go’s

Pure Classic The young folks are sure to go nuts for this: an all-day outdoor festival at Bamboo Bar, with fishbowl booze aplenty and a pool for your drunk dunking. Pure Productions and Cult Classic, two sibling production and creative collectives, are teaming up for Pure Classic, one hype Saturday flush with DJs, producers, emcees and party starters practically all day long. All three headliners are pretty fresh-faced, but they’re up-and-coming young guns making notable names for themselves in a blossoming EDM and DJ culture in Philly and Jersey that’s becoming more and more creative with every Soundcloud page. Noah Breakfast, Nadus and Lindsay Lowend (what a name, right?) are the top three of a line-up roster that’s about 20 deep. The sounds will undoubtedly be a melange of club bangers, trap jams, electro collage, video game sound sampling and remix heaven. The spinning sets will sandwich turns from area emcees and newbie vocalists, so this’ll be a great chance for folks to find local talent they never knew was in their background when they’re suddenly transfixed by a searing rhymer or inspired interpreter of 2014 ADD music culture. You will not hear any Top 40 that hasn’t been thoroughly re-worked. You will hear creative studio concoctions and ultra-contemporary dance music performed almost exclusively for the purposes of blasting at full volume. // B.C. 4pm. $15. When Simon Cowell opined to Rolling Stone that Adam Lambert had a “touch of Freddie Mercury and the sexiness of Prince,” Lambert was still coming off his American Idol fame, eye shadow and all. Cowell probably had no idea how on point he was, with Lambert years later—meaning now—out on tour with the modern incarnation of Queen, once led by Freddie Mercury, who died of AIDS in 1991 when Lambert was nine years old. Twenty years later, and Lambert’s fronting Mercury’s band. Queen, aptly named considering the band is inarguably rock royalty, brings its 20-year catalogue to Philly for a Wells Fargo Center extravaganza, with Lambert singing lead vocals aside original Queen members Roger Taylor and Brian May—and man, how thrilling it’ll be to witness Lambert singing in tribute to the unique styles of the charismatic Mercury, including the song that made Wayne’s World famous, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and pretty much every other Queen hit that has become worldwide rock standard. The tour’s been pretty well-received, too. Writes Jason Bracelin of the Las Vegas Review-Journal: Lambert sings with “an almost offhanded operatic flair” which fits the band well, particularly given that Lambert is prone to “unselfconsciously wear a leopard-print suit ... eliciting neither grimaces nor guffaws.” Lambert’s comfort in his own skin-tight jeans probably accounts for his wide appeal in America, and, in particular, amongst queer people. After all, Lambert, like Mercury, is queer. That may not be news of the world, but it gives Queen’s ongoing legacy a kind of magic. // JOSH KRUGER

The Pizza Man Abides Serving late-night slices to Old Town revelers may not sound exotic— but it might just be the heart and soul of what pizza really means in this town. By JOSH KRUGER •

T

he sounds of Citizens Bank Park float out of the television, harmonizing with the steady hum of the air conditioner in the window. Neither of the two men in the small pizzeria on Chestnut Street is impressed; the Phils lost badly to the Atlanta Braves the night before, and they aren’t looking too hot today, either. One of the men, a regular customer, has brought the guy behind the counter—that’s Pete, the owner—today’s Inquirer, and he drops it on a table that’s slightly different than the others there in the humble dining area. This table boasts a large swiveling of-

fice chair, a laptop computer and bowl of cherry pits. That’s the man’s desk. Beside it sits a guitar. At the counter, flour explodes outward with each thrust of Pete’s fist. He refuses to interrupt his kneading as he chats up the customer across the Formica archipelago. He is determined to make that pie. Pete Caceci is of average stature, with dark eyebrows and white hair. He peers at the customer through the rectangular spectacles that hang low on his nose. “The air conditioner is still working—so far,” he muses. After a few more words, the customer leaves, and Pete is alone again. Outside Pete’s Pizza

Joint, cars and pedestrians pass by. As he works, the Phillies lose. He continues kneading.

It’s 11 years now since the 53-year-

old Queens native visited Philadelphia and stumbled across the unexpected opportunity to buy this unassuming little storefront on Chestnut between Second and Third streets in Old City. It wasn’t fancy, but it was a chance to live his dream. “I could see it would be a one-man store, a real mom-and-pop,” he says, “an original underdog, blue-collar type pizzeria, a-hole-inthe-wall.” He pauses thoughtfully and adds:

“With good food.” And it is. Oh, the mushroom slices have hills of canned mushrooms spread across them haphazardly, but there’s something charming about the no-frills nature of it. If you need something to put down your gullet that will satisfy you, and you’re tired of the “wood-fired flatbread” bullshit rife in bourgeois America, Pete’s slices are an oasis of simplicity. As Pete puts it: “I’m always here. They know what I got: I’m consistent, regular, old-school New York-style pizza. Nothing fancy.” The joint seems to have one primary objective, and ambiance isn’t it, unless the

aura you’re looking for conveys something cheap, satisfying and totally Philly. That’s the ironic part, given that Pete’s a New Yorker— or, rather, he was. “When I left New York, I burned the bridge,” he says. “I invested in Philly. I own a house here. My business is here. I’ve been here a while.” Indeed: In the decade since he came to town, Vince Fumo was indicted and sent to prison, the Phillies won the World Series, the Eagles went to the Super Bowl, Barack Obama was elected President twice, the economy collapsed, and Jimmy Rollins eclipsed Mike Schmidt’s hitting record. Meanwhile, Pete kept on making pizzas—and learned the ways of the locals: “I go downthashore to Sea Isle City” when it’s vacation time, he says. Vacations for a self-employed pizza man, though, are few and far between. Pete works every day from 10:30 a.m. to closing time, circa 2 a.m. The only help he’s got is late-night, part-time, on the weekends; other than that, it’s all him, which helps keeps costs down. It takes a physical toll, though. “You have to maintain your health!” he says. “You have to have good wheels; your back and legs are imperative; you gotta

“It gets crazy here. The place will be packed, and the most beautiful girl in the world is sitting there wrenching her guts out, and nobody cares, we’re all having a good time! Eating.” watch your weight.” His hale-and-hearty stoutness carries a whiff of drill sergeant about it—earthy and well-worked, not plump. He’s like a congenial, happy warrior on a mission to feed the kids who are out on the town. And oh, are they. “It gets crazy here,” he insists. “On a regular basis, late-night, there’s a couple garbage pails in the middle of the floor, and if the kids gotta puke, there they go. They better do it in the pails, though, and not on the floor, because that’s what the garbage pails are there for.” He chuckles, his eyes shining. “The place will be packed, and everyone is sitting around, and the most beautiful girl in the world is sitting there wrenching her guts out, and nobody cares; we’re all having a good time! Eating. Place is full.” Pete doesn’t get distracted by the revelry himself. “I already did my carrying on when I was younger,” he says. “I’m the sober one— now I’m the guy who keeps an eye on everybody and shuts off the lights when it’s over. This is a place for them to hang out [safely].”

It’s not just drunk kids that Pete’s keep-

ing an eye on. It’s also service workers—and artists. “There’s a lot of people who are in the arts [who eat here],” he says. “There’s a lot of artists and musicians who can afford to live in Philly. It’s a through-and-through bluecollar town, and I thought that if I served honest food and I’m open all the time, then I’d get all those workers: the restaurant and bar workers, the entertainment workers, the bus drivers, the shift workers, the cab drivers.” Abruptly, Pete reaches for the guitar sitting over by his desk. He starts strumming a soft Spanish melody: “I’m also a musician! People drop in who play! And anything can happen on the off nights during the work week!” His enthusiasm mellows slightly as he reflects on his musician customers: “When it’s dead in the winter, when it’s midweek— this is their local place. They sustain me.” And Pete sustains them. Without his steadfast devotion to entrepreneurship, his dogged sense of duty to slinging slices, where would the neighborhood be? Without fucking cheap pizza, that’s where. And that matters. Philadelphia still has one of the lowest costs of living of all major cities in America. Reasonably low real-estate prices have had ripple effects across the city’s culture, allowing for artists, writers, musicians, actors and entrepreneurs to eke out their own modest incarnations of the American dream. Just like Pete has. “There’s tons of opportunities here in Philadelphia for young people,” the pizza man says. “We have property everywhere! Put your own money down, no mortgage, fix it up. If you’re handy, you don’t have to get involved with the bank.” Pete pauses as he puts down the guitar. “I think small is the business model for this country. Everything is going to have to become local… You just have to be willing to homestead and change the neighborhood. It takes time.”

But a pizza isn’t just about the character

of the man making it. Here’s what Pete says goes into a worthwhile pie: authentic, consistent, crunchy crust and delicious sauce. Good ovens that keep the temperature steady, too, are vital to consistently good dough. And it’s lucky that Pete has good ovens, because that’s the only heat there is in the shop during the cold winter months. It’s a tightrope walk, he says, vacillating between four months of snowstorms and sweltering Philly summers. He does it, though, and he’s just grateful the air conditioner is working this year. “I talk a good game about retiring,” he frowns. “But you have to feather your own nest nowadays. Nobody gives you a pension in any business.” He shakes his head at himself. “Plus, I’m a musician. I bought myself a gig with this place because I can play here. I’ll never retire.” n

Hot Again

Never mind the trendy Fishtown pizza joints— the question is, what’s good reheated the next day? By RANDY LOBASSO •

P

izza is hard to screw up. I know this because I’ve eaten the stuff they cook up in Scranton—thick, square pizza with American cheese—and even that, if you step back and consider the grand scheme of things, is pretty good. But yesterday’s pizza reheated today? That can go way wrong, way fast. For years, I used to microwave day-old slices, or just ate it cold; preheating an oven just seemed like too much trouble for too slight an improvement. Then, recently, I discovered a way to reheat old pizza that actually makes it taste good: A pan. Step 1: Spray oil on the pan and heat it on high. Step 2: Bring it down to a low-medium heat. Step 3: Place the slice in the pan. Step 4: Wait about five minutes. Step 5: There is no Step 5. You’re done. And it’s great. I decided to test out the reheat method on some of my favorite Fishtown and Kensington pizza places. While everyone knows the horde of new restaurants that have opened up in recent years—Pizza Brain, Pizza Beddia, The Art of Pizza—what often gets overlooked in citywide chatter is the assortment of brick- and white-walled corner pizzerias and steak shops that have been spent decades feeding my neighbors cheap, fast slices. Their names are etched in our heads, both from foot traffic and from the menus they leave stuck in all our front doors.

rlobasso@philadelphiaweekly.com I bought five slices from five Fishtown/ Kensington spots—Primo Pizza, Key Pizza, Momentos Pizza, Tommy’s Pizza and Franco’s Pizza—to see whose held up how after being cooked, refrigerated overnight and then reheated in the best way possible.

Tommy’s Pizza

465 E. Girard Ave. True story: Tommy’s $2 slice does not look good when it’s put on its circular paper plate. Here’s why: The crust takes up about a quarter of the entire slice, and, oddly, it’s more of an obtuse triangle than an equilateral one. That said, this is pizza. Unlike some foods—mostly meat products—its look and taste do not necessarily match. Tommy’s pizza is decidedly decent: The crispyish crust is wavy on the bottom, almost like a good piece of naan, so eating it comes with the fun adventure of not knowing whether your next bite will be a thick- or thin-crusted bit. This is Tommy’s Pizza’s greatest feature, served fresh—and its downfall the next day when you try to reheat it in a pan. With a wavy crust, the part actually touching the pan gets hot and crispy, while the rest of it just gets hot. The cheese melts soft, which is great, but the reheated crust just isn’t the same. Verdict: Eat it all hot from the oven.

Remember, of course, that a pizza shop’s mission is to serve you hot pizza in the moment; they’re not responsible for planning your lazy 18-hours-later leftovers. Still, reheated pizza is a big part of life—and maybe even half the joy the dish has to offer. n

2573 Tulip St. Welp: I guess I found my new favorite pizza spot. Though it’s just a few blocks from my house, I’d never tried Franco’s Pizza until this experiment—something that seems sort of weird in retrospect, especially considering that, at a neighborhood party a couple months back, someone ridiculed me for loving Key Pizza’s and made me promise I’d check out Franco’s. Now that I finally have: It’s fantastic. The thin crust and soft cheese complement one another awesomely; it reminds me of a spot in Greenwich Village called Two Boots where I used to stop on the way to punk shows when I was a teenager. (Fifteen years later, that pizza is still memorable enough for me to reference here, so, take that as you will.) Sizzled up in the pan the next day, the crust’s extra crispiness adds a new dimension; I’m not sure it’s better reheated, but it’s certainly just as good. . Verdict: Now, later, whenever—it’s gonna be worthwhile.

2563 Trenton Ave. Something I learned early on when I moved to the Port Fishington area is that Primo Pizza, the closest pizzeria to my house, is mostly good for when you’re looking to evoke a sentimental nostalgia for your middle-school cafeteria days. Primo’s crust has that poolside-snack-bar sort of vibe—on the dry side, but with anthills of sauce lining it. When it cools down, nothing about its look changes. Reheated, it’s still got that Elio’s-style crusty-cheese feel on the top, while soft and gooey underneath. Verdict: Either fresh or reheated, share it with your 11-year-old niece or nephew.

but soft and comes to you already topped with just the right amount of unmelted Parmesan cheese. The place as a whole is described pretty well on Yelp by reviewer Andrew C.: “I’m glad that this place is in Fishtown now because it’s a place that offers just a good pizza at a fair price. . . That’s why I gave it 3 stars. Also it’s CASH ONLY.” All of which is to say: A slice at Momento’s is the pizza equivalent of an iconic cup of diner coffee: the platonic ideal of the bluecollar snack. And indeed, like even a good cup of coffee, you don’t really want to reheat it later; its fresh, deliciously greasy goodness simply doesn’t hold up for the hours you’ll spend dreaming about how it might taste for breakfast. Verdict: Eat it all hot from the oven.

9-1 Jul.

2329 York St. People usually don’t believe me when I tell them about my love of Key Pizza. The hot, window-fanned, seatless storefront on York Street has a unique quality most foodies would probably scoff at, but for the average pizza eater, the slices are almost perfect. First, the cheese. There is a ton of it. And when you pick up a slice of Key, you can feel the difference between it and other slices in pure weight. It’s probably bigger and thicker than any of its neighbors; each slice is the equivalent of about two from another Fishtown oven. Which may be why more people don’t rave about it: A slice of Key is soft, doughy, cheesy and with little sauce. But when you’re looking for a slow, hearty meal at your desk while working from home, there’s nothing better. Except, that is, when you heat it back up. Reheated, Key Pizza’s soft, doughy fundament turns into a thick-and-crispy crust— a whole new entity altogether, arguably much better than the average budget pizza that locals would expect from a corner takeout joint. Only problem, of course, is finding a pan large enough to house the slice. Verdict: Take it home and watch its goodness blossom.

Keep it Coming Sancho Pistola’s isn’t screwing around with you about brunch. By Brian Freedman // bfreedman@philadelphiaweekly.com

I

t is, perhaps, the single greatest brunchmenu introduction in the city right now— a straightforward, honest direct address to the guest: “On the off chance you’re hung over while reading this, we’ll keep it simple. For $30, you choose one appetizer, one entree, and one side. You will eat them. You also buy the ability to drink unlimited mimosas, margaritas and Bloody Marys for two hours. If you need to drink more than that, you have problems. Please enjoy brunch. Everything is available a la carte.” Oh, if only everything were this easy on a tender, post-binge Saturday or Sunday morning! And while $30 may not seem like a great deal at first glance for three brunch-time courses, the entirety of the offer is tough to beat, especially if you plan on taking advantage of that limitless two-hour-drinking offer. Happily, the food itself also goes a long way toward justifying the expense: A recent weekend brunch—it’s offered Saturdays and Sundays between 11am and 3pm, in addition to the restaurant’s regular hours—was both decidedly tasty and stupendously filling. Tortilla soup, anchored by a pasilla-amped chicken broth of serious richness, also boasted delicious pulls of chicken as well as a veritable flotilla of avocado, queso fresco, crema

and a tangle of tortilla strips. Eggs benedicto is enough for two as a result of its stunning heartiness, the chorizo and black beans perfect foils for a chipotle hollandaise that you’ll want to lick from the plate. Plantains, sweet and spicy, should absorb any excess alcohol from the night before and, in the process, sooth any remaining jangled nerves. The regular menu is available as well, and if you’re looking to bash the previous night’s demons from your system with lightness instead of decadence, then the tuna tacos are a great option, each one piled generously with ruby-shimmering hunks of charred fish swirling with togarashi. Everything about that brunch-menu preamble, it turns out, is correct: You will order, you will eat and drink, you will enjoy. It’s nice to discover real truth in advertising. 

MUSIC

A Global Getdown with Philly Flavor By melding music from around the globe, Worldtown Sound System’s become one phenomenal party starter. By Kennedy Allen // kallen@philadelphiaweekly.com

J

ust like there are scores of insufferable music snobs who dismiss anything that doesn’t fall squarely into their narrowly defined category of choice, just as many aficionados appreciate a little dose of everything. Thankfully, every once in a while, an outfit comes along that redefines how we think about music and music appreciation, and for Philadelphians, that group is Worldtown Sound System. This eclectic crew—which ranges in number up to 12 at any given time—fuses together house and dance music, funk and soul, rhythms from around the globe, live instrumentation and turntable wizardry to create a heady hodgepodge of sonics sure to make you move—which is their goal, naturally. They bring a refreshing burst of energy to the local music scene. After the release of their debut EP, We the People, and the hugely successful Worldtown Music Festival they planned and helmed at the Piazza last month, perfectly timed with the beginning of the World Cup, WSS has their sights set on international stages, with gigs in South America and Europe in the works. As they approach their three-year anniversary as a collective, lots more is in store, both for the group itself and the audiences they leave enthralled and exhausted, including an opening set at Philadelphia Weekly’s Aug. 20 “Concerts in the Park” in Rittenhouse Square, sandwiched between DJ Cash Money and Pablo Batista and the Mambo Syndicate. Trust us, there will be dancing. PW snatched up five of the band’s members for a recent chat: producer and co-founder Ben Arsenal, drummer Gary Dann, vocalist Jonifin Marvin, bassist Jay Powerz and saxophonist Dan “Basskitty” Keller.

wanted to start a band that would take up all of my time. They were like, “Hey, check out these tracks. Let’s just jam, and maybe we’ll hang out one day; we’ll play the tracks and see what happens.” Next thing I know, it’s a whole other thing.

PW: How did the group get started?

JM: Or initiator.

BEN ARSENAL: Sound System was sort of started informally when I met Femi. He, myself and this other young woman started the [Worldtown] organization together. When we met, Femi and I were both DJing at the time, and we had a bunch of drums. At our first party together, we decided to bring the drums along, and all of a sudden, it turned into this live, interactive experience—and people were blown away, psyched about the live energy these drums brought to the room. From there, we opened up the studio at 9th and Dauphin and started producing a lot more stuff. We met up with a couple members from the West Philadelphia Orchestra and invited them to record some music and vocals and put them over some beats. After that, when we were putting on shows, it was like, Hey, we’re DJing, but look! We’ve got some horns and stuff! I had been collaborating with a French DJ on this one track, and Jonifin had been on my ass to get in the studio anyway, so I invited him to come down, and he sang and wrote the lyrics for “She’s a 10.” Then I thought it’d be cool to have a real bassist lay down an additional bassline on top of all the crazy synth stuff I had going on, so Jules [Jay Powerz] came down before his trip to Brazil and recorded about 20 minutes of music. Then I thought it’d be even cooler to get Gary [Dann] to lay down an additional drum track, ‘cause a live drummer would make this project even crazier. And I thought, oh my God, what is this turning into?

GD: Right—or the fire behind everything: “Come on, guys. Let’s make a press kit!” This is the first project I have ever been in where there are about eight or nine others that all have those same skills. We’re all producers, studio owners, dedicated musicians, DJs.

GARY DANN: (Laughing) Yeah, they didn’t tell me that they

JONIFIN MARVIN: It really stems from Ben knowing people from different parts of the city that were involved in different things. Like I was over here doing my thing; he met Jules over here and Gary over there … What are some of the surprises you’ve encountered along the way? BA: It was exciting to become aware of the potential of the band. Figuring out what it would look like and sound like, and then the awakening aspect of realizing how tight we had to make things, performance-wise. GD: I’ve been in a lot of bands; I’ve been playing since I was 14 years old, ya know? And every band I’ve ever been in, if they needed a web site, no one else could do it but me. If we needed photos, I had to do it. I’m not a photographer by any means, but it needed to get done. When the band needed a flyer, no one else did it. It was always me. Rehearsal space, whatever, it was always me, I was always the facilitator.

We are the World: Members of the Worldtown Sound System chill after a rehearsal at the Boom Room. Shown are Paul2Paul, Jonifin Marvin, Oluwafemi, Stan the Man, Gary Dann, Jay Powerz, Mateo Jimenez, Ben Arsenal, Basskitty and Dende Macedo. (Photo by ArtChick Photography)

DAN KELLER: Yeah, I DJ as well. I play a lot of house, but also some dubstep and electronica, too. GD: See? People that make shit happen. It’s just ridiculously refreshing to be a part of a project where I can focus on drums and recording. Now I can really make my role and my skills and talents shine. This is an opportunity for that, whereas in my other bands I’ve always been so bogged down with other shit. JAY POWERS: Yeah, sometimes you hear about this person carrying the band or that person carrying the band. This band, it comes together and carries itself. If your music could be the soundtrack for any genre of movie, what would it be? BA: Movie? That’s a good one.

know what I mean? ‘Cause he’s goin’ everywhere, man! He’s traveling the world, and it’s really fast paced; you don’t know where he’ll be next! It’s all over the place! JM: Yeah! It even gets sexy for a minute, all of that. Wait, what’s that Dirk Diggler movie? You mean Boogie Nights? JM: Like, Boogie Nights Part II. GD: We have this one song I love that’s like, my favorite WSS track right now. We usually play it last in the set, and that song always makes me think of some car chase going through the woods of, like, southern Oregon or northern California where there’s trees lining the road, and it’s dark, and there’s this really intense, fast-paced chase going on … I always imagine that song like that. JM: Really? You don’t think about having sex?

GD: There are so many different moods in the music.

JP: [Laughs] Well that’s a given!

DK: Like a 1960s James Bond thriller spy jawn.

GD: Yeah, that’s at a stopping point in the chase, man.

JP: I was just about to say! I was thinkin’ some Bond shit, ya

JM: Yeah, well. That song makes me think about doing it. 

on a different kind of meaning, quite unlike how we wait for a suitor to return a text. “It’s a story that no one really knows about,” says Neenan. “The more I researched him and his life and this episode and this journey, I became more fascinated about it. [Musick] was a hero, and he was fearless, and he was very subdued about it. He had a passion, and he followed it.” With Langabeer’s music, Neenan’s choreography, Marsh’s hauntingly beautiful voice and the BalletX corps of young dancers (and singers), Sunset, o639 Hours is sure to be one hell of a trip to the South Pacific from pre-WWII U.S., one full of Maori culture, birds and bridges, letters and hardcore heartache. Contemporary ballet companies don’t often take these kinds of risks, but this show will try to take Philly dance to heights it’s never experienced before. 

flects and honors Musick’s story. Singer Andrew Marsh, who provides vocals and piano for Philly’s premier improvisational chamber music trio Murmuration (“From Handel to Hole”), is doing some heavy vocal lifting for Sunset. “I quit my job to do this,” Marsh says bluntly. “From the beginning, it’s been very collaborative. Everything is original music, but we’ve taken into account the styles of music that were going on in the U.S. in Samoa, in Hawaii and New Zealand in the ‘30s.” There’ll be references to this unique confluence of histories and cultures. Did you know frozen dinners were first produced in the 1930s and ‘40s, and the Golden Gate Bridge was built from ‘33 to ’37? That’s also when Pan Am started taking off with Musick as a head pilot, carrying cargo and letters to these newlydiscovered territories that started to capture the imagination of Americans. Back then, we didn’t have such short click-obsessed attention spans. We wrote letters that took months to get delivered and sometimes simply got lost. Longing took

his one’s a little out there. But wonderfully so. BalletX’s summer staging of Sunset, o639 Hours explores the story of aviator Edwin Charles Musick, famous until his death in Samoa in 1938. It’s a production conceived, choreographed and musically directed by BalletX’s co-artistic director and choreographer, Matthew Neenan, and his friend and composer, Rosie Langabeer. Langabeer is a New Zealander who came to Philly in 2010 to work with Pig Iron Theatre Company, and she’s done all kinds of awesome artistic stuff here, but she misses home. The story goes that Neenan heard Langabeer playing the accordian and asked her to be a part of the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA) in 2011, which celebrated all things Parisian. But it was the 2013 PIFA, with “If You Had a Time Machine…” as a core theme, that brought Langabeer to Musick’s chapter. And now they’ve teamed up to create a fulllength narrative ballet that’s been years in the making. “I think it’s the biggest project that I’ve done that I’ve had this much artistic responsibility. It’s the first ballet I’ve ever made,” Langabeer says during BalletX’s recent open rehearsal at the Performance Garage. The jazz-trained musician’s culled together a small band that will perform on stage alongside BalletX’s cast. They’ll also be using all kinds of weird sounds. It won’t be your typical ballet. “Most ballets don’t have lyrics or spoken word, so we’ve done that kind of writing for the ballet, too,” she says. “We’re playing a whole slew of instruments and using plane engines.” Musick learned to fly just before World War I and became a pioneer pilot with Pan American in the 1920s and ‘30s, gracing Time magazine’s cover in 1935. A ballet that tells the story of a famous aviator would be remiss without a few plane rattles and hums. In addition to live music on stage—in direct contrast to a traditional, full orchestra or obscure Eno-like composition—BalletX’s dancers will be providing the vocals, too. “They sound good. If they can do it, and it makes sense— if it’s the right choice—then why not?” Neenan says. It’s his third project in which his dancers have sang—following 2011’s Proliferation of the Imagination (his first collaboration with Langabeer) and in Kate Watson-Wallace’s 2012 I was at a party and my mind wandered off... —but it’s ballets like these that keep Neenan on his toes, innovating and evolving. And working with Langabeer’s live band isn’t something he’s used to. “I’ve had to learn patience within my own structure,” he says. “I have to change up my game. I can’t keep doing the same old thing. I know what’s easy for me, and I know what isn’t [in order] to challenge all of us, and the dancers and the company.” Some of the inspiration for Neenan’s choreography will be pulled from his nearly month-long trip to New Zealand, a journey he took with the help of Langabeer and her family. She was able to show him the richness of kiwi culture: from traditional Maori football (soccer) pre-match dances to the nearly 100-miles-tall island nation’s world-renowned bird population, two elements that will no doubt work their way into their-two act ballet. One of the coolest things about Sunset, o639 Hours is the attention to detail paid to crafting a musical score that re-

SCREEN REVIEW

Life Itself Life Itself is two stories moving in parallel. One is a celebration of the legacy of film critic Roger Ebert; the other is a study of the man himself. Ebert, who’d been battling cancer, passed away while Life Itself was being filmed, which makes the personal interludes with Ebert and his wife Chaz all the more poignant in their immediacy. With glimpses of Ebert’s home life at the end of a prolonged illness, director Steve James tells a story of the death of someone who, for many moviegoers, feels like one of the family. The other story James tells is Ebert’s life. Part archive and part celebration, Life Itself chronicles Ebert’s career: his early days (including joining AA), his Pulitzer, even Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. His contentious relationship with Gene Siskel offers the closest thing to dirty dish, and even then it’s some between-takes sniping everyone agrees ended in friendship. But Life Itself doesn’t lean on drama—Ebert’s influence is big enough without it. How big? Well, it’s hard to overstate, as glimpses of screenings and discussion of TV fame suggest. Archival footage is telling (he pans Three Amigos in front of Chevy Chase), and Martin Scorsese talks about Ebert’s support for smaller films, which shaped careers and often led to friendship. (It’s too cozy for some of his colleagues, but there was a shared-sandbox feeling about Ebert’s enthusiasm.) The occasional raw edges suggest fallibility without quite becoming expose, and his candidness both in work and life take center stage. That honesty refreshes this love letter to a man whose work has been both so influential and so happily influenced. “However you came to know me,” Ebert writes in his blog near movie’s end, “I’m glad you did.” And because it’s Ebert, we know what he means. (Genevieve Valentine) REVIEW

Trollhunter Trollhunter, screening as part of Philadelphia Film Society’s “Graveyard Shift” midnight-movie series, is remarkably charming for a movie in which concentrated troll stink features heavily. A genretweaking mockumentary that balances its handheld-camera immediacy with the implications of its myth, Trollhunter follows three ambitious but hapless students out to film something clandestine (of course) who discover that the man they think is poaching bear is actually on the trail of something far more legendary. Though this is clearly a film that understands and loves its genre, there’s a slyness to the ways the troll mythology gets folded into both the physical and metaphorical landscapes. The trolls themselves have a children’s-book charm that suggests horror isn’t quite Trollhunter’s point. Not that the film can’t build a sense of dread—it gets as much mileage out of a snowy expanse and a flock of birds as other movies get from an entire dilapidated house—but the soft-edged creatures encourage the mixed feelings troll hunter Hans (a pitch-perfect Otto Jespersen) has about his work. Beyond the exhausting trappings of the job, there are clear parallels beneath the fantasy. Even for the students, the thrill of uncovering a legend is laced with environmental concern, since after a thousand years, trolls are suffering from human encroachment and getting agitated about borders. Even more agitated is the omnipresent bureaucracy that’s managed to turn myth into paperwork: the Troll Security Service, with its decoy bear procurement and troll incident reports, is an antagonistic fixture in the snowy reaches only slightly less dangerous than the trolls. The mythic cant to the horror and the wide streak of dry, Scandinavian humor sets Trollhunter apart from the usual found-footage horror fare. The laughs and thrills combine for great midnight viewing. And there are enough views of crisp, snow-dusted mountaintops to take the edge off the summer heat. (G.V.) Fri., July 11, 11:59pm. The man knew movies: The career of famed film expert and commentator Roger Ebert (above) is up for examination in Steve James’ documentary, Life Itself.

A Brilliant Life, Well Lived Beloved film critic Roger Ebert did more than masterfully decode movies. He put his stamp on them. By Genevieve Valentine // feedback@philadelphiaweekly.com

I

f you love to talk about movies, watching a documentary about Roger Ebert is a little bit like watching a documentary about your dad. For more than one generation of moviegoers, Ebert has been the entry point to appreciating movies. A critic who both hosted frameby-frame movie breakdowns at the Conference on World Affairs and wrote Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, his enthusiasm for film was infectious, and his reviews were a primer in the language of cinema. When watching Life Itself, the sheer scope of his influence is striking, but even more so is its depth. Ebert occupied a precarious but deeply effective position that encompassed both academic rigor and utter lack of remove. He was transparent about the subjectivity of reviewing, and a reader of his pieces is often getting two things out of it: his review and how he felt about the movie. As a kid of nine or 10, I was relieved when I discovered he and I were agreed in our opinions of Beauty and the Beast. A few sentences outlined the difference between a movie calculated and pitched for children and a movie that managed to incorporate an all-ages energy that still felt organic to the story. Sitting at the kitchen table reading that breakdown–something that for him was most probably a glancing observation–put into words something I hadn’t been able to articulate. It was one of the first moments I remember thinking critically about film. Ebert was a tireless advocate for movies, devotedly attending Cannes, and championing indies, oddballs and the occasional glorious mess. The one mentioned in the documentary is Gates of Heaven alongside Siskel, but Ebert had his own favorites. Anyone looking for a quick film-school course can find it in the commentary track Ebert recorded for 1998’s Dark City, a movie he instantly declared a modern classic, and one of the films of the year. In it, he likens cine-

matic homage to the specifics of jazz music, talks about how some movie mysteries are more effective when they’re left unexamined and declares that film is inherently ill-suited to intellectual argument, being by nature an emotional medium intended to draw the audience into a particular point of view. “We become people who are absorbed into the story,” he maintained, “if the story is working.” The tag on the end of that quote is both a self-aware caveat from an experienced professional and a little sidelong shade at some of the movies he’s weighed and found wanting. Part of his egalitarian approach, Ebert was game to be offended, bored or enraged by a movie, and somehow it felt like the reveal of a Bond villain whenever he got to tackling something he hated. In Life Itself, when a friend of Ebert’s tells the camera, “He is a nice guy, but he’s not that nice,” we know what he means. With the turn of phrase Ebert possessed, there’s a reason a lot of his best reviews had a streak of vitriol in them. He hated the Transformers franchise in particular, to the point that he eventually took one or two commenters to task in rebuttals that were even more scathing then his reviews. Still, he hated Transformers less than he hated North, of which he’s famously said, in a sentiment that reads halfway between disappointed-dad and sheer malicious glee: “I hated this movie. Hated, hated, hated, hated, hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it.” Early in Life Itself, Ebert recalls a stamp with his name on it, with which he bylined anything the ink would stick to. His parents had their work cut out for him, he said, trying to keep him from authoring the world. It’s hard not to think that he managed it anyway. By writing so much and so beautifully about film, he’s a secret companion in many a theater seat, having decoded movies’ secrets so we can love them even more. 

TIMAREE’S BODY

THE UNCOMFORTABLE WHOLE by Josh Kruger jkruger@philadelphiaweekly.com

My Chubby Problem This belly is not bathing-suit-ready—and I’m not sure it ever will be.

H

ave you seen that to-the-side men’s speedo? Of course you have; that’s what the Internet’s for. But if you haven’t, just Google—and I shit you not—“one sided grape smuggler.” Yeah: This thing is awful. But it’s been around for a while, so why is it making the rounds so prominently now? Because it’s swimsuit season! Yay! By which I mean oh god no. Summertime is when we get to see what’s been hiding under all our dark colors and layers for months. If you’re anything like me, it’s the season you get to look at other people and wish you looked so good shirtless, much less in a bikini. And as ridiculous as the men who wear that Eurotrash banana-hammock look, I’m left with the nagging feeling: “Gosh, I wish my abs were that flat.” Peeking in through the windows of the metaphorical thin people’s club has been one of the loneliest aspects of my entire life. That’s ironic, really, because according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly three-quarters of all Americans are overweight. (That includes, but is not limited to, the one-third who are obese.) Still, as a child, it seemed to me that my peers could fit into T-shirts without bumps or lumps or rolls bulging outward. I couldn’t. God forbid I’d get stuck wearing polyblends, my love handles betrayed callously as the material clung to my true shape. Soccer was a nightmare. Early on, I figured out that dark colors were particularly helpful. But when I started to hit puberty, my wheezy “Tubby the Tuba” physique was exacerbated by the fact that I did, in fact, play the tuba. In today’s parlance, I suppose you could say I was a hot little (big) mess: braces, parted hair and boy-boobs galore. But hell, I was me, and at least my parents loved me. So there was that. As I grew body hair and started becoming a young man, I got thin. For, like, five minutes when I was 19. Then, hauntingly, my weight ballooned over a hundred pounds to where, at the age of 23, I tipped the scales at a hefty 317 pounds. I started working out, cutting out the trips to fast-food joints, doing slow and then later fast cardio, and losing weight steadily, healthily. Finally, I weighed in below 200. I told everyone it was a joyous thing to feel healthy—which it was, but that wasn’t why I’d done it. What I wanted

was to look good shirtless. My healthiest “thin” weight seemed to rest around 180 pounds: nearly half the size I’d been at my fattest. By the CDC’s count, though, that meant my body mass index was still considered overweight. Never mind that BMI is a measurement whose efficacy is hotly disputed as an accurate gauge of health—that overweight designation bothered the fuck out of me, no matter how much I got laid. After years of yo-yoing between 170 and 210 pounds, I’m a little over 200 pounds today. As a single gay man pushing 30, I might as well be on the goddamned moon. I’ve decided to stop using online dating profiles and apps, in part because I just don’t want to lie. North of 200 pounds is nowhere you want to be on the gay singles scene; I can just imagine some spiritually dead queen swiping his finger across my GrindR profile tile with disdain, sneering, “Be gone, tubby! I have real men to fuck whose abs I can see!” Am I projecting? Maybe. But I wasn’t imagining the well-meaning older gay man last year who told all 185 pounds of me: “You know, Josh, your main liability is your heftiness. You should get thinner.” Gee, thanks, queer community elder. And we wonder why younger gay men and older gay men can’t get along, right? Internalized generational self-hate baggage FTW. So there’s that. The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance, an advocacy organization focused on being OK with fatness, thinks that thin people ought to shut the fuck up. “Our thin-obsessed society,” their mission statement reads, “firmly believes that fat people are at fault for their size and it is politically correct to stigmatize and ridicule them.” If you’ve ever seen a Hollywood comedy, where “Get a load of those fatties being all fat and shit!” is what passes for humor, you’ll know where they’re coming from. Still: While there’s a lot of natural variation across the spectrum of human bodies, and many people’s self-observed healthy zone does not match up with what the BMI charts would suggest, there are limits to what we ought to accept for ourselves. Obesity is not good for you. The CDC cites being overweight as an increased risk factor for coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancers, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, liver and gallbladder disease,

sleep apnea, respiratory problems and osteoarthritis. But then on the other side of the fence, you’ve got self-hating former fatties like me, or Howard Stern, finding ourselves alarmingly prone to knee-jerk nastiness toward fat people. Oh, we disguise it as tough love. We hold hands with fat people who hate themselves so much they hate other fat people, and we all have a good hypocritical time as we singtogether-slash-cry-on-the-inside, “Guys don’t make passes at girls with fat asses!” Some people even do really stupid shit like posting “thinspiration” photos of starving supermodels to keep the insane faith. This is where eating disorders come from—and those will kill you, faster and more miserably than being fat will. Eating disorders affect up to 24 million Americans, says the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders. And it’s not just women who are starving themselves, vomiting up dinner or abusing amphetamines to get thin: The ANAD says that 10 to 15 percent of people with eating disorders are male. So there’s that, too. And finally there’s this: ANAD says 95 percent of all people who diet will regain their lost weight within five years. Good luck with that fad diet, perpetually unhappy America! Love your hair, hope you win. At the end of the day, shirtless or not, “accepting” my fatness or not, I feel like obsessing over it is getting me nowhere fast. Here’s the reality: I’m going to be a little fat at least for this summer. And while I don’t consider that ideal, I find it less objectionable than all the alternatives I’ve encountered: yo-yo dieting, eating disorders, giving up and getting even fatter, or devoting my life to working out every day so people can check out these guns (he says, slapping biceps). Because I’m realizing my life is too important to waste carrying around the baggage of insecure people—including, among them, my younger self. Maybe I’ll join a gym now so, next year, I can rock that one-sided grape smuggler and have guns non-ironically. Or maybe I won’t, because I’ve got other shit to do. In any case, this summer, I’m just going to go swimming anyway, because I’ll be damned if I’m going to let either thin people, fat people or my own neurotic insecurities tell me to do a damn thing. 

My IUD and Me The Supreme Court’s decision on birth control, religious employers and who has to pay for what runs afoul of a nasty problem: It’s got little to do with reality.

I

haven’t had a period in over five years. It’s awesome. The number of hours, dollars, cotton plants and pairs of underwear saved is incalculable. More importantly, I don’t lose two days a month to debilitating cramps. The Mirena, a tiny, hormone-covered, T-shaped device in my uterus, gets all the credit. Last Monday, the Supreme Court ruled that closely held corporations like Hobby Lobby enjoy human rights such as personal religious beliefs that can determine which prescriptions their employees are allowed to access using their health insurance, including the Mirena IUD. As health insurance is part of one’s compensation package, this is tantamount to your boss getting to tell you how to spend your paycheck. It is their money, after all. It took me several attempts to get my IUD. I was in my early 20s and childless, and some doctors think that IUDs are too big of a decision for young women. The irony was striking: that the decision to get birth control was too major—but bearing children doesn’t require permission or proof of competency. Since the age of 15, I’ve been on hormonal birth control. Technically, it was for medical reasons: The women in my family have terrible dysmenorrhea, with incapacitating cramps that last several days. I’ve passed out at work while trying to push through the pain. The pill took care of everything, though, and I was able to function like a regular old person. You know—how medicine is supposed to work. Politeness says I should stop talking about my reasons right there. But hey: Not all hormonal prescriptions are for medical problems. Sometimes they’re for fucking. Sometimes people have sex without any intention of getting pregnant. Sometimes they do it because they’re in love, because they’re bored, because it feels good and they want to, and they’re autonomous beings who have the right to use their own bodies for no other purpose than pleasure. But not everyone believes that you do have that right. There must be consequences, dammit! You don’t just get to go around and experience physical sensations willy-nilly! You can see the remnants of Calvinism in the implicit messages: Bodies are sinful, and physical pleasures must be met with

Days after the ruling, SCOTUS decided the religious exception to insurance coverage could be applied to all contraceptives, not just specific kinds. And as religious groups began to argue that this decision opened the door to allow exemptions to LGBT antidiscrimination laws, too, the problematic nature of the verdict become all the more apparent.

The other starkly revealing thing is this: I’ve yet to hear from anyone who sided with Hobby Lobby who has the remotest clue how IUDs or emergency contraception work. Emergency contraception contains the exact same hormones as the birth-control pills (or shots, rings, etc.) that are taken every day; they work by preventing a follicle from developing in the ovary, as well as thickening the cervical mucous. Non-hormonal IUDs, meanwhile, work by releasing copper ions that act as spermicide. In both cases, they simply don’t function as abortifacients. But again, the Supreme Court ruled that the accuracy of a belief is not the foundation of whether or not you get to force it on others. That, apparently, is religious freedom. I love my IUD. With a busy lifestyle that makes it difficult to take a pill at the exact same time every day, it makes the most sense for me. It has the fewest negative side effects, and considering how long IUDs last—five years for Mirena, 10 to 13 for the Paragard— they’re cost-effective as all get out. But not everyone has the cash on hand to get one; they can cost as much as a minimum wage earner makes in a month. That’s where insurance comes in, just as it comes in for the folks who don’t have liquidity for chemo, heart surgery or an ER visit. Economic barriers to access can be as limiting as actual bans when you’re not wealthy. And maybe I’m some kind of crazy zealot, thinking that the poor have rights—maybe even as many as corporations do. n

earthly punishment. Some people consider sex to be a luxury, an optional activity that, if not aimed at producing children, serves no purpose. Even putting aside the demonstrable physical and psychological benefits of regular sexual activity, this is a strange argument. Smoking and eating meat, for instance, both seem far more optional than a drive that’s fueled by the biological itch to perpetuate our species—and certainly carry plenty of ethical concerns themselves—yet health-related issues arising from those habits are unquestionably covered by insurance. There aren’t a ton of birth control options for men, due not only to the challenging nature of stopping millions of sperm, but also because we often consider both child-preventing and child-raising to be female obligations—so women don’t have the luxury of abdicating their responsibility for contraceptives. But can you imagine if there was a drug that 98 percent of men (but no women) took at some time in their lives? Would that drug be considered unnecessary?

I am a straight female who was a dominatrix for a while—and out of all the jobs I’ve had, I loved it the most. Working as a secretary—one with a master’s in writing—wasn’t that hard to beat, I guess. But professional dommes aren’t immune to workplace romances, and I fell in love with a client. Long story short, we are still together after a year and a half, after I closed my practice because he didn’t want to be with a woman who was still practicing this kind of physical intimacy with others. Fair enough. But the list has grown longer. His jealousy flared when I told him that I went to lunch with a male friend that I’d played with before, and again when he found an old picture on my computer of me blowing my ex (snooping sucks when someone’s not mature enough to handle what they find). But the most bitter pill is that he no longer wants me to write anything about my experiences—not because it might cause professional fallout if people knew about him dating a former pro domme, but because he doesn’t want me to think about the experiences I’ve had. Fuck, Dan, I love this guy, but “retiring” has never been so hard and so scary. I honestly miss the sex-positive community and the impact (ha) I had on people who decided—for whatever reason—to pay a professional to share this creative, spiritual, eros-infused intimacy with them. It seemed like I needed to give that up to have a marriage and family, which, as I get into the later half of my 30s, seems like I better get going on if I want this to happen. DTMFA, I know, but why has it been so hard to do this time? Despairing Over My Man’s Expectations “DOMME’s letter struck a chord with me, because I was once in a relationship with a guy who did very similar things,” says Mistress Matisse, a professional dominatrix, writer and sex-worker-rights activist. “He knew exactly who I was when we started the relationship—just like DOMME’s guy did—and he said it was fine. But once I got emotionally invested, that all changed. He tried to control me by making me feel insecure, like I was a flawed person and my only chance for a relationship was him—who else would be willing to be with an (ick) sex worker? As dumb as it sounds now, I think part of what blinded me to what he was doing was the fact that I was a dominatrix! Surely a dominant woman could not be in an abusive relationship, right? Wrong. Leaving him was the best thing I ever did.” And that’s exactly what Matisse thinks you need to do: DTFMA. But Matisse isn’t telling you anything you don’t already know. So why is it so hard? “It’s ‘so hard’ because she’s in a relationship with an abusive, controlling man who’s been systematically tearing down her confidence and her sense of self for a year and a half,” says Matisse. “He’s made her give up things that were positive and meaningful to her, he gets angry when she sees her friends, and now he’s trying tell her what she’s allowed to think? This flaming hypocrite isn’t just chipping away at her self-esteem—he’s going after it with a jackhammer!” Matisse doesn’t want you giving your boyfriend a second chance, DOMME, and neither do I. His controlling, slut-shaming behavior is simply unforgivable. “DOMME’s boyfriend is leveraging all the power of a sex-negative world to make her think she has to give up all of who she is, her past and her

future—even her own mind—to be in this relationship. Leave him. She shouldn’t agree to talk it over, or try to understand his feelings or work out a compromise.” He might pretend to make some bargain with her, like telling her that if she married him, or had a child with him, then he would possibly feel OK about her writing about her own life. Don’t fall for this,” says Matisse. “Her thinking about, writing about or even being a dominatrix is not the problem. He is the problem. If DOMME sticks around, she’ll just be giving her boyfriend a chance to do more damage than he already has. She should leave and not look back—and she should spend some time with a therapist. This guy has planted so much poison in her head, more than she can even see right now. She needs to dig it all out, so she can move on to a happy relationship with a man who loves her exactly as she is. And trust me, DOMME, those guys are out there.” Follow Mistress Matisse on Twitter @mistressmatisse. I’m a straight guy, and my girlfriend just read my journal. I’d written some pretty harsh things in there about her. I believe that we have a strong connection despite having very different personalities. Although I wrote some very harsh things about her personality, I don’t question the strength of our bond. I feel guilty that she saw some of the things I wrote, but I am also angry that she read my journal. What do I say to her? Stupid Conflict About Reading Entire Diary “Good-bye.” She invaded your privacy, SCARED, which was bad enough. But if you were so stupid as to put “Things That Cannot Be Unsaid” into writing—now “Things That Cannot Be Unread”—then I don’t see how this relationship can be salvaged. I’m a straight girl with a question regarding oral sex. My boyfriend wants to come in my mouth. I can deal with the taste, but in order to climax, my boyfriend needs to pump his penis very fast. He needs to do this at a speed I can’t match even with my hands. This fact makes it very hard to contain his dick in my mouth. He also thrusts, which makes me feel choked, and I pull away. Is there something fixable here or is this simply a question of “what he needs to do to come” and I consequently have to learn to deal with it? I hope this question doesn’t sound too silly. I’m not very experienced! No Signature For Wonderer Your question isn’t silly, NSFW, and I’m happy to answer it for you. Most men need to thrust during oral to come— if oral isn’t foreplay prior to thrust-based vaginal or anal penetration—and that thrusting action can present problems for even the most experienced cocksucker. The solution: Shorten your boyfriend’s cock by wrapping a fist (or two) around the base of his shaft, and let him thrust through your wet fist(s) and into your mouth. Since your fist(s) can grip his dick firmly, you can relax your mouth a bit—you don’t need to maintain a suction seal during this stage of the blowjob. You relax your mouth and jaw, your boyfriend thrusts in and out, his cock won’t go all the way to the back of your throat and your clenched fist(s) provide(s) the necessary friction and pressure to get him off. 
