It is neither hyperbolic nor exaggeration to say that Diana Ross is one of the most successful female recording artists of all time. Opinions aside, it’s simply true. There are too many contenders who—try as they might—can not step to her amazing accomplishments, which are aplenty: 18 number-one singles (including Supremes hits), 70 smash singles, 100 million records sold worldwide, nominations for Golden Globe and Academy awards, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Grammy Lifetime Achievement and Hall of Fame awards, a Kennedy Center Honor, stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame—oh, and Female Entertainer of the Century by Billboard magazine. Many a Philadelphian will be eager to welcome the 70-year-old Detroit legend as she shimmies onto the Mann Center stage for the concert event of the summer.

Over 50 years after her Motown-motored arrival into America’s mainstream, the ripples of Ross’ pioneering career continue to be felt throughout entertainment and culture. (It’s no secret The Gays love her: Her ’76 global burner “Love Hangover” was all up in Paris is Burning, four years before the anthem “I’m Coming Out,” without which pride celebrations, drag queens and Diddy alike would be equally effed.) If there hadn’t been Diana, would there be a Michael Jackson as we know it? Beyonce? What about Mariah Carey or RuPaul? Would Audra McDonald have won a Tony for her turn as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill if Ross hadn’t portrayed Billie so expertly in Lady Sings the Blues? Would Jennifers Holliday or Hudson have pulled off their inspired “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” versions if it weren’t for Ross’ example and perseverance in the early days? She’s teamed with greats for unforgettable duets in studio and on films. Could ‘70s Hollywood have ever found a more luminous, perfectly-cast on-screen co-star for Billy Dee Williams? Nope.

It’s impossible to imagine what kind of setlist Ross could be cookin’ up to heighten her Mann mien. Intelligence Squared Debate: Campaign Finance Pennsylvania is one of the worst places in the United States for free and fair elections, and our campaign finance laws aren’t exactly helping the situation. Our commonwealth is one of 11 U.S. states with either minimal or no limits on campaign finance. That means, you, your neighbor or a corporation with interests in fracking state forests can give as much and as often as you want to your candidate of choice. There’s been debate—minimal debate, mind you—to change this law, but it’s done nothing to change the fact that our Democratic nominee was a relative unknown who did not show up in the polls until he carpet-bombed our TV screens with advertisements paid for with the $10 million he lent his own campaign.

Many have argued for things like public financing or, you know, sensible limits, while others have said where you spend your money is a matter of free speech. Tonight, the Constitution Center will hold a panel—live streamed for NPR’s Intelligence Squared—debating these points of view. Those in on the discussion include First Amendment authority Floyd Abrams, law professor and former ACLU president Nadine Strossen, the Brennan Center for Justice’s founding legal director Burt Neuborne and Fordham Law professor Zephyr Teachout, national director of the Sunlight Foundation.

Courtyard Dancers: Asunder Dance can be much more than pure entertainment, feats of athleticism or expressions of extreme grace. For India’s Courtyard Dancers, it’s about telling a story—one that searches for answers and relishes in the details of what could have been, but will never be an undivided India. The concept and choreography come from Pallabi Chakravorty, but the ensemble cast breathes a life into Asunder, this Painted Bride two-night run that would be otherwise impossible. And this is way more than dance; it’s dance theater. Vocal recordings and poetry will be employed, Thumri and Baul songs (traditional courtesan tales set to music) will be tapped, and a whole spectrum of emotions will be explored, from loss to longing.

The Bride does such a lovely job of attracting world-class performance art that celebrates and disseminates the stories of cultures across the globe—something the U.S. could use a little more of, frankly—and when a half-dozen mediums are used to concoct a riveting tale of political strife, its resulting family trauma and spiritual woes, and give it a multi-era coherence, that’s the ideal way to open eyes, hearts and minds. Asunder is such a production. This won’t necessarily be even close to Bollywood, but Bhangra and Punjabiphiles, take note: it all started here. // B.C.

Bridget Everett In a world of cookie-cutter pop stars and auto-tuned lyrics, it’s incredibly refreshing when an artist really goes against the grain and creates something that breaks the mold in its quest to bring us something magical. Debbie Allen Lydia Grant, the unforgettable dance-teacher character who actress-dancer-choreographer Debbie Allen gave life to in the hit ‘80s film and TV series Fame, offered up some sobering, iconic advice to her young charges: “You’ve got big dreams … you want fame. Well, fame costs. And right here is where you start paying—in sweat.” Allen’s certainly gone on to add impressive work as a director and producer to her already-hefty resume since then, but that edict still resonates, both in her own career and in the lives of the students around her—at her acclaimed Debbie Allen Dance Academy in L.A. and via the occasional talk she gives, like this one.

Allen has consistently won praise as one of the more prolific industry pros out there, holding down roles behind and in front of the camera in some of the more popular series to hit small screens—among them A Different World, Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal—and at 64, shows no signs of stopping any time soon. In fact, her most recent work, Brothers of the Knight, premieres at the Merriam Theatre over this 4th of July weekend, a rousing story drenched in music, drama, comedy—and, of course, dance—based on the Brothers’ Grimm tale The Twelve Princesses.

Can tickets to a Wale concert help at-risk kids figure out their HIV status? Philadelphia FIGHT says yes.

Here’s how that works: Throughout June, teenagers and young adults aged 13 to 24 have been invited to get tested for HIV for free, at any of half a dozen locations around the city. If they do so by this Friday, June 27, they can receive tickets to the July 5 concert.

Last year’s show proved a success: More than 1,200 young people were tested for HIV. This year, says Tiffany Thompson, the program director for FIGHT’s Youth Health Empowerment Project, the effort is growing more widespread. “It’s something that other cities have been doing to get young people tested,” she says. “A concert is just a great incentive. A lot of the people we tested [last year], it was the first test that they’d ever had.”

HIV incidence in young people is high and rising, she says—particularly among young people living in urban environments. “Those,” she points out, “are the individuals who listen to hip-hop.”

The way the event has been promoted, it’s specifically targeting young African American men. That’s a step in the right direction for Philadelphia HIV outreach, considering who’s statistically most at risk of contracting HIV these days.

And yet it’s impossible to avoid noting that the campaign is not specifically targeting gay or queer people.

That? That’s a little more complicated.

More than 1.1 million people live with HIV/AIDS in the United States. Here in Philadelphia, the number is about 20,000—just over 1 percent of the city’s population. Most affected by the virus, according to the national Centers for Disease Control, are men who have sex with other men.

While the CDC says that only about 4 percent of the American population falls into that class—which it broadly labels with the clunky acronym “MSM,” including self-iden-

tified gay and bisexual men as well as others—these men make up over half of the existing HIV-positive population in the U.S. What’s more disturbing, though, is that America’s youth are the ones bearing the brunt of new infections.

Young men who have sex with other men are particularly affected by HIV. And, if you break down age groups by race, young African American men who have sex with other men are the group most affected by HIV. The number of new infections isn’t decreasing, either. It’s consistently stayed static, or gone up, for years—despite years of simultaneous effort by activists, organizations and various levels of government to make it drop.

There are a lot of reasons for this. Thompson cites a lack of proper sexual health education among urban youth, along with socioeconomic barriers to healthcare. And that just begins to scratch the surface of an American society that neglects to properly fund public education in urban areas; an American culture that hasn’t seemed terribly invested in reflecting an honest awareness of the life experience of people of color; and an African American church culture that’s been slow to shed dogmatic homophobia.

Ernest Coston, a 37-year-old Philadelphian of color, agrees. “There’s [existing] barriers in place, sure,” he says.

Because of those institutional barriers, he suggests, folks stepping up and educating themselves is key to preventing HIV. Coston, as a hip-hop fan and an alumnus of the Philadelphia school system (he graduated from Audenreid), notes that “the hip-hop community and culture has definitely gotten to know more bout HIV and homophobia over the past three to five years.” He thinks that’s a good thing. “We have to be educated,” he says—“but even more, we have to be honest with ourselves. There are a lot of men in the black community who don’t want to get tested, or they

sleep with the same sex and don’t want to tell their girlfriends, and so on.”

To Coston, honesty means getting tested and taking care of yourself—no matter what the result might be. More importantly, it really is something for everyone: gay, straight or whatever. Getting an HIV test, he says, is a no-brainer.

“HIV is far from a ‘gay disease’ anymore,” he says. “If you are sexually active, then you should get tested. Period.”

Can this month’s free-Wale-concert-driven outreach campaign have a substantial impact on HIV awareness or the HIV acquisition rate? It’s too early to say. It’s clear, though, that it’s exactly the type of approach we need if we want to stop this virus from stubbornly continuing to affect Americans.

HIV/AIDS has been around for 30 years now. It will continue to be around, too, as long as we don’t talk about it enough. After all, the CDC also says that one in six Americans living with HIV/AIDS don’t even know it—because they’re not getting tested.

The only way we’re going to stop this virus is by confronting HIV on its own terms and targeting those folks most affected by its spread. Get tested, know your status, and take ownership of your health; for nobody else will.

The past three decades have shown that to be true.

Puglia, for all its recent press, remains relatively off the well-traveled Rome-Florence-Venice tourist path. And the food is generally less well-represented in America than that of more familiar regions. But now that I’ve been immersed in it since the beginning of the month, I’m convinced that its time has come for widespread success in America.

It has been an amazing education. From a dining standpoint, the cuisine as I’ve experienced it is the very embodiment of the explosive pleasures of ingredient-based food. This is to say that the best dishes I’ve tasted are built on a base of a few simple, impeccable components, any one of which will take your breath away. The mozzarella is otherworldly, so deeply lactic that I may well be getting my week’s supply of calcium every day when I tuck into that afternoon’s knot of it on the porch, alongside a chilled Campari and soda. The range of ricotta, the caciocavallo and more are deeply satisfying.

Meats are both varied and utterly delicious, and over the past few weeks I have developed a passionate love of equine: Chunks of horse or donkey meat simmered away in a tomatobased sauce, or packed into a sausage that’s

’m writing this column in Italy, from the second-floor porch of a friend’s house that I’m renting for the month of June. As I type, I’m staring out over the Ionian Sea directly in front of me, the waves counting their metronome beats over the rocks and providing the white noise of my days and nights here, the calming background against which I hear the patter of my older daughter’s feet inside, and the giggling of my younger one, and the padding around of my wife, more relaxed now than she’s been in a longer time than I can remember. We both are.

When this opportunity came about, and once we ran the numbers and realized that, if we cashed in my frequent-flier miles, it would cost less than renting a nice house for the month at the Jersey shore, we jumped at it.

The house is in Torre Colimena, a lovely seaside town of stucco and stone buildings, sienna-colored roof tiles, great beaches and friendly neighbors. And it’s an easy drive to countless destinations in this part of the proverbial heal of the Italian boot.

Indeed, it’s proven to be the perfect place from which to launch our daily expeditions to explore as much of the local culture as we can:

FOOD & DRINK / Recent Reviews grilled over an open flame and used as an anchor for an epic sandwich: It’s a family of flesh that I’d never really explored but that I have been beyond impressed with.

I’ll miss it back in the States. The bread is both hearty and elegant, and the pasta, especially the miraculous orecchiette, astounding either on its own or with a simple sauce of chopped tomatoes, a dusting of dried oregano and a drizzle of some of the best olive oil I’ve ever tasted. (I’ve loved Le Ferre’s offerings. Snap them up if you can find them.) Or with the seafood, plucked from the local waters.

Last week I visited Masseria Guidone—one of the most justifiably decorated producers of extra virgin olive oil in the entire country—and toured the stunning estate with owner Luigi Guadalupi and my friend Francesco De Rinaldis Saponaro, while Luigi’s wife Stefania stayed back with my wife and two daughters: Italian hospitality is second to none. (Francesco also introduced me to the stunning Negroamaro “72100” from Cantine Risveglio, at the phenomenal Negroamaro Wine Festival in Brindisi, which I’ve been dreaming about since finishing the bottle.)

Wine-wise, I’ve been blown away: I’ve rarely had so many great wines for such fair prices. The local markets here sell nice bottles for around $7 each, and if you want to go just a bit higher, you can really taste something remarkable. I recently toured and tasted at Cantine Due Palme, Cantele, and Gianfranco Fino, all of which were spectacular: From value-priced bottles to pricier ones that have been garnered with awards all over the world, they embody exactly what make Puglian wine so special: Expressiveness and food-friendliness, as well as a sense of exuberance that demands a second glass, and then a third—and, let’s be honest here, a fourth, as long as you’re not driving.

Puglia is also a region packed with cities and towns that stick in the mind long after you’ve left them. One of my favorites has been Laterza, a city of a bit more than 15,000 people, where my family and I spent an amazing day last week. Thanks to the help and enthusiasm of my new friend Monica Caradonna, we were welcomed with incredible warmth and generosity by Mayor Gianfranco Lopane, a number of his associates, and everyone we encountered. From the mysterious charms of La Cantina Spagnola with its frescoes and carvings, and an epic meal at Trattoria del Purgatorio, to the gorgeous ceramics at SuMo Maioliche d’Arte and the deeply soulful breads of Due Emme Panificio Artigianale (and so much more), Laterza is the embodiment of everything that convinces me that Puglia will be the next big destination in Italy.

So while the decision to come here may have happened quickly—a friend’s off-the-cuff suggestion was all the catalyst we needed—it has proven to be among the best ones we’ve ever made.

Sometimes, if you’re truly lucky, a spouse’s halfbaked idea can grow into something unforgettable.

In this case, it has resulted in a month that I have no doubt we’ll be talking about for years to come. And with all this great food and wine, I’m sure I’ll be a walking advertisement for the gluttony that this region all but demands: We are eating and drinking well enough here that I plan on wearing the excess pounds I’ve packed on as a badge of distinction. My wife may think otherwise, but I’m okay with that. It’s one of the risks of the job. And one of its greatest joys. 

At Avance, Chef Justin Bogle is essentially running an in situ course on how to bridge the gap between occasionally avant-garde technique and the sort of comfort that a great restaurant meal should provide. This was embodied in the cauliflower chawanmushi, a texturally perfect rendering of the Japanese custard, here studded with thumb-sized Nantucket bay scallops, their seared crowns looking like little umber-toned exclamation points set against the creamy expanse of dashi-rich egg custard. One bite highlighted those sweet scallops, a second the refreshing snap of pickled romanesco, another the crystalline pop of sake-cured trout roe, yet another the bright zip of meyer lemon zest confit. Each thumbnail-sized piece of the crispy fish tacos was perfectly fried with beer batter and crunchy. The chorizo burger was better—traditional and jalapeno-spiked sausages blended with ground beef into a flavorful 9-ounce patty, topped by a crown of fried queso tropical. The real bright spot at Lucha, it seemed, was with pork. Pork confit, swirling with life from its overnight orange juice marinade, anchored a happy hour carnitas taco. Each bite left the faintest aroma on the tongue, the result of smart additions of cinnamon, cumin, clove, and Mexican Coca-Cola. Cochinita pibil was well conceived and executed, each bite ringing with the pleasant tang of guajillo peppers, a whiff of achiote and orange juice. (B.F.) MORGAN’S PIER 221 N. Ribs are a well-portioned serving of half a dozen St. Louis-cut beauties, first roasted under pressure and then finished on the grill and brushed with the same baste as the piri piri chicken. Dipped into one of the two homemade sauces (BBQ or hot), they’re excellent. The lobster roll, the most expensive dish on the menu at $18, is slicked with lemon butter yet never overwhelmed by it: That glistening addition clearly is employed in the service of framing the inherent sweetness of the meat itself, not supplanting its claim to primacy.

Elote corn, occasional kernels blackened along their flanks and smoky against the sweetness of their neighbors, packed the spice of

chili paste alongside the almost briny cotija cheese, as well as aioli, green onions, cilantro and a zip of lime juice. Scooped up with fried corn chips, it’s addictive. The rabbit leg confit maintained a moistness and delicacy that the notoriously difficult-to-cook meat rarely achieves. Forked with zuurkool (think of sauerkraut) as well as a coin of smoked pork sausage, and maybe a tender carrot slice, this was as hearty as it was thoughtful. So, too, were the bitterballen, gorgeous fried meatballs of roux-creamy braised pork lifted with nutmeg and mustard. They arrived four to the order, a neat little procession of rich, palate-coating goodness. One of them had developed a crack in its carapace, and the impossibly moist center had begun to ooze out: one of the sexiest things I’d seen all month. A special of chicken croquettes, also perfectly fried, embodied a different side of the concept, seasoned with onion powder and thyme and based on the previous day’s impeccable rotisserie chicken. For the kind of brunch that sticks to the proverbial ribs, and that offers nourishment for the belly as well as for the soul, Porto is just about perfect. Savor a crunchy fried chicken breast lavished with sweet-spicy maple jalapeño yogurt glaze, all of it sandwiched with bacon between the geometry of house-made cheddar waffles. It’s called the “Yo Cuz,” and no hangover is a match for its crave-able charms. The cheesesteak is rendered as the “Ultimate Sin,” a green piri-piri-streaked ribeye beneath a crown of St. George cheese and cosseted in a perfect Portuguese roll. The side of roasted potatoes, tangled up with their caramelized onions and peppers, are standouts in the city’s brunch-wars. (B.F.) Red Kings 2, replete with private rooms and plenty of karaoke opportunities upstairs, is a phenomenal addition to Chinatown. The space is simple yet pleasant, service is exceptionally friendly, and

Boiled sliced lamb in chili sauce was infinitely more than that humble description, a stunning mountain of earthy meat joined by petals of sweet onions, thick slices of nutty garlic and snappy broccoli florets. Dan dan noodles, also numbing but far from painful, sprinted across the tongue with each slurp. Steamed homemade dumplings swirled with a subtle hint of curry, lending them an all-too-unfamiliar perfume. Wonton soup benefited from a broth as hearty as it was pure. (B.F.) RYBREW 2816 W. Depending on what you order, the components here will either be brought in or made in-house, but they’re all conceived and crafted with smarts and careful attention to detail. The crab cake anchoring the Rybread sandwich, for example, is a lightly packed, filler-free, homemade puck of notable elegance. Despite the name, it’s served on a fluffy brioche bun with lettuce, tomato and a chipotle mayonnaise that packs just the right punch. Turkey is lovingly roasted by the Rybrew team, too, and makes appearances (if you like) in the reuben-referencing “New York” sandwich and others. There’s also a solid selection of salads and a rotating roster of soups. Whether folks are here for a quick bite or to stock up on beer from the well-curated selection of bottles, they’re all happy.

Strawberry pancakes had just the right balance of fluffiness and chew. And a pork sandwich I took home for lunch was very nice: sweet and subtly smoky and exactly as moist as I’d hoped. The 24hour marinade and homemade barbecue sauce are notably good.

You can pretty much munch your way through the menu at this Brewerytown newcomer with relative impunity, confident in the fact that you’ll be eating well. Start off with guacamole and chips, but don’t stop there. After all, the tacos here are Shifty’s raison d’être. The Rub was a highlight, its tender strings of braised brisket singing a song of adobo and chipotles, the slow simmering heat building yet never cresting. The Hem and Hawl, on the other hand, demonstrated the kitchen’s aptitude with fish: Well-cooked and tender tilapia done on the plancha was anchored by an attractive slaw that brought enough crunch and liveliness to each bite. The Towner, a damn-theorthodoxy handful of spicy chicken nuggets joined by translucent pickled red onions, cheese sauce, homemade ranch dressing and iceberg lettuce was a shamelessly savory, messy item that almost single-handedly justifies a walk down the street for a six pack. The food here walks the razor’s edge between heady comfort and unexpected exoticism. Octopus is poached with sake, fresno chile, ginger, lemongrass and more until it takes on the texture of a particularly meaty porcini mushroom, then gets hard seared and tossed with red pepper caramel: Magnificent. Homemade andouille showed up like a surprise every other forkful, borne alongside blackeyed peas of heft and delicacy. But it was the single fried chicken leg riding shotgun that stole the show: Skin this crisp and flesh this tender is something to cheer. Oysters were made new with a side cup of pomegranate mignonette, the fruit’s sweetness electrifying the briny bivalves. (B.F.)

TAQUERIA FELIZ 4410 Main St. 267.331.5874. taqueriafeliz.com Cuisine: Mexican Grasshopper tacos: petite, unabashed, four to the plate, each with its flanks akimbo and its centers piled high with splinteringly crisp, garlic-kissed insects—their bellies glistening, their legs a tangle of wiry stiffness. There was no hiding what this was, no glossing over or attempting to disguise the reality of tortillas stuffed with bugs, guacamole, onions and cilantro. It was a deeply respectful rendering of one of the great, underappreciated Mexican treats, and without a doubt the best version of tacos de chapulines I’ve had in years— probably the best I’ve had since first falling for them in Oaxaca itself. Each bite was a nutty, crunchy, subtly sour delight—an aria to antennae; a love letter to the locust-like. (B.F.)

Pickled cauliflower and cabbage dot the plate, the better to cut through the heartiness of those excellent meats.

At Woodmere, The Jury is In The Chestnut Hill museum’s 73rd Annual showcases more of Philly’s on-the-rise art talent.

P

hiladelphia is a city well-regarded for its art collections. Distinguished institutions like the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the groundbreaking Moore College of Art have cultivated outstanding talent for decades, while the breathtaking visage of the Philadelphia Museum of Art itself attracts visitors from around the globe, inviting them to take in its rooms of stunning works—and run those rear steps. But while each of these renowned facilities can be counted among the feathers in our civic-artistic cap, too few people (both here and abroad) are aware of Chestnut Hill’s stately Woodmere Art Museum, dedicated solely to the expression and genius of Philadelphia artists.

Originally opening its doors in 1940, the 19th century Victorian mansion and the collection contained within was the passion of Charles Knox Smith. Born and raised in Kensington, Smith managed to do well for himself, despite his modest beginnings, and decided to establish a staggering 2,000-piece collection of art that focused specifically on showcasing his beloved Philadelphia through various mediums. Not only has the Woodmere collection grown since then, but its initial mission of focusing on art and artists from the region has helped it develop a proud niche for itself.

Rachel McCay, Woodmere Art Museum’s assistant curator, chatted with PW about what art lovers can expect from the 2014 Woodmere Annual Juried Exhibition—affectionately known as the Annual—its yearly showcase for which 50 pieces by area artists are selected for display, each using our fair city as a source of inspiration. This year’s juror, Sarah McEneaney of Locks Gallery, painstakingly chose a wide array of mediums and styles to convey what it means to live here.

“There are six different mediums, including paintings, mixed media pieces, sculpture and more,” said McCay. “About 35 percent of the collected work is abstract, 25 percent city and landscape work, while roughly 30 percent falls under portraits or still life. The remaining 10 percent of collected pieces couldn’t be classified at all, lending validity to the breadth and exclusivity of the myriad of talented artists within this city.”

PW: What are some of the more startling elements of this year’s Annual?

RACHEL MCCAY: There’s a strange balance of happiness and sadness throughout the show. It’s certainly a colorful exhibition, so when you immediately walk into the gallery, you’re taken by the abundance of pinks and greens and yellows, but there’s also a lot of various figures and expansive landscapes that can convey feelings of sadness and loneliness. I think those two threads of the exhibition interact in interesting ways. When you get close and really look, that’s when you see these moments of poignant suffering and introspection, which are mainly expressed through a lot of deep blues and oranges. There’s a lot of figuration as well, lots of recognizable images which is also somewhat welcoming when you walk into the space.

How has the Woodmere Annual impacted your experience living in Philadelphia?

Well, we require the participants to fill out a questionnaire.

The questionnaire asks them what artists or what other works of literature there are that have influenced them, what are some of their recent career accomplishments and specifically what their working process is. What the Woodmere Annual does is it makes everyone aware of the artist collective and the current initiatives that are going on throughout the city that I personally would not have been aware of otherwise.

By including various members of these different groups or collectives, it gave me a better idea of what was going on in the city. What we wanted to convey with this exhibition and what Sarah hopes that people take away from the exhibition is that it’s a small survey of the contemporary trends in Philadelphia, and that it’s by no means meant to be comprehensive or to say that these are the only paths artists are taking in their careers. But it is certainly a good swath of approaches, styles and conceptual underpinnings that reflect the current artistic trends in this city.

What can people expect from the Annual this year that wasn’t present during previous exhibitions?

Historically, the exhibition was restricted to members, but that changed decades ago. Last year’s exhibition, in particular, featured a lot of paintings about painting and paintings about what the place of an artist is within society. In this year’s exhibition, if anything, I think people can expect more narrative in the work, more autobiographical pieces—lots of figurative and representational work largely, but there is abstract work as well. I’m hesitant to say what people can expect, though, because people should be open to experiencing the various pieces for themselves.  Through Mon., Sept. 1. Open House is Sat., June 28, noon. Free.

Robert Gordon Goes Home Again The rockabilly royal drops new LP, plays rare gig.

I

t’s been quite the journey for 67-year-old rockabilly stalwart Robert Gordon, and with the help of some longtime friends, there’s no apparent end in sight to that wild ride.

The tireless crooner released his 20th album yesterday, I’m Coming Home—his first solo studio LP since 2007’s King and I—on Lanark Records.

Gordon splashed down on the scene in the late ‘70s during a rejuvenation of the genre, his hits “Rockabilly Boogie,” “Bad Boy” and “Are You Gonna Be The One” catapulting him to a revered standing. His signature baritone bellowed loudly and with confidence, his rough-and-tumble aesthetic jibing effortlessly with fans of the Golden Age of rock-n-roll. “We were all crazy back in the day,” Gordon tells PW, recalling those timeless memories of early roots rock.

The list of artists that the occasional actor has worked with professionally over the years is impressive: Bruce Springsteen, Anton Fig, Paul Shaffer, Chris Spedding, the legendary Link Wray. “Link was one of a kind,” Gordon says of the late, great guitar god. “We were great friends. I actually saw him as a kid when I lived in Bethesda, Maryland and ended up cutting two records with him.” So, what motivates a seasoned vet of his stature to cut another record? “I’ve wanted to get back into the studio,” Gordon admits. “I’ve done tracks for various projects but not an entire album.”

Securing a record deal that would allow the singer’s timeless sound to thrive had been elusive for Gordon in recent times— that is until he rekindled a working relationship with neorockabilly guitar player Quentin Jones. “They approached me.

I did a record for Jones, who had a little label 20 years ago.” His old colleague now runs Lanark Records in Lancaster with business partner Frank Barrett, and their imprint’s committed to churning out new records with that classic rockabilly sound.

I’m Coming Home features three brand new cuts from Gordon and company, as well as a number of cover versions of classic tunes by Buck Owens, Ricky Nelson and other notables, giving his record a variety of sounds. “I’ve always had favorite tunes I’ve wanted to cut, and these are a couple of them,” Gordon says. “I think there’s a something there for everybody.”

This week, Gordon takes the stage at The Tin Angel for a rare Philly gig to celebrate the release of I’m Coming Home, where he’ll be joined on stage by Jones on guitar, Kenny Aaronson on bass and David Uosikkinen, a founding member of Philly’s own The Hooters, on the skins. “I’ve been away for a while,” says Gordon, “and I’m looking forward to coming back. Heal May Do Just That Tim Showalter’s frank folk confessions feed the heart and soul.

PR’s First Listen is like the Holy Grail of music press. It means that you may be on the fringes of widespread success, but you’re right on the money when it comes to artistic expression. They do a good job of mixing it up, too: world music, jazz, metal, funk, R&B, and, with Tim Showalter’s Strand of Oaks, folk.

For the Philly resident but frequent road warrior, his new record Heal is an achievement, and we’re proud of him.

As Showalter puts it, he’s “no spring chicken.” This is not his first record, and hopefully it won’t be his last. But it IS the record that seems to be the one to get his music to the masses. And it’s dark and gritty and beautiful and sad and weird and personal. From his website: “The record is called HEAL, but it’s not a soft, gentle healing, it’s like scream therapy, a command, because I ripped out my subconscious, looked through it, and saw the worst parts. And that’s how I got better.”

Phew! Don’t you want to listen now? What writers seem to be focusing on most is the revealing nature of a few songs, namely his divulging details about his marriage and an affair. Really, Heal is just a great folk record, and great folk records, in my opinion, tell stories about emotions, life, loss and love.

Here’s how Showalter responded to some questions.

PW: What’s your Philadelphia story? How’d you get here, what brought you here, and where were you before you arrived?

TIM SHOWALTER: I grew up in Goshen, Indiana. I was friends with this cool guy named Lee Green. He was a few years older and moved to Philly in the late ’90s. I’d never been to Philly, but decided if it was cool enough for him, then I’m going. So I moved for a brief time to Philly in 2001, then relocated to Wilkes-Barre. Lived there till 2009, then came back to Philly. Basically been spending the last 13 years up and down 476.

How’d you end up on First Listen?! That is some shit, man. Like, you’ve arrived. Is that exciting for you?

What do you think it is about this Heal that might win you a larger audience than ever before?

I assumed NPR just liked the record and wanted to get behind it. NPR has really become a huge source for me discovering new music, so I’m honored to be in that league. Heal is my favorite record I’ve made, and I’m thrilled with the possibility of it getting a wider audience. I’m no spring chicken when it comes to the music world and have worked my ass off to get to this point. It’s exciting.

I loved the Grantland story, too. That one dwells mostly on the personal nature of this record, and you get very honest about marriage. Kudos (to you and Steven)—it’s a good read. Honestly, I think folk music and folk music that’s blended with rock sensibilities lends itself quite naturally to confessional songwriting. Is it not obvious that good dark folk music is a little painful and emotionally gritty?

Look alive: Strand of Oaks’ Tim Showalter says his latest LP is his favorite output yet.

It’s obvious to me. Unfortunately, a lot of bands recently have lost the gritty and really focused on some weird campfire bullshit. So hopefully my record can, in a small way, destroy that trend.

I’m psyched to see artists like you bubbling up with Philadelphia attached to their press. It feels like, more and more, there’s a band renaissance happening in this city with folks like Swearin’, Cheerleader, The Districts and NOTHING gaining momentum. Do you see it as well?

Never heard of the first three bands. NOTHING is fucking brilliant. Some of the best guitar tones I’ve heard in a while. Those dudes are tearing down all the bullshit and getting right to the center of what rock should be right now. I love living in Philly. I’m not here very much because of touring so I’m not really tapped into the local scene that well.

Do you keep tabs on big music releases? Which records of 2014 have resonated with you? Do you have a top three or five records of all time?

Right now, the new Sharon Van Etten is my favorite. It’s a perfect record. It’s pretty impossible to list my favorite records of all time. I have so many records that have created and shaped me as a person. My memory is also shit, so I’ve never been good at keeping track. That works in my favor because I forget about records then can rediscover them again. Something for Everyone This year’s jam-packed Philadelphia Independent Film Festival offers a nimble mix for local cinephiles.

T

he seventh annual Philadelphia Independent Film Festival technically begins here on June 25, but filmmaking is a globally celebrated artform, and an experimental satellite festival of sorts is already screening in Moscow, where four PIFF-slated presentations made the cut and are being shown to an audience of thousands. It’s a move designed to appeal to an open-minded audience and exhibit the artistic blend of the local and the international that festival director Benjamin Barnett hopes to always foster. “We have such a fantastic opportunity to connect,” he says of PIFF, which is part of the reason this year’s fest is offering some screenings online for streaming to international viewers, via CoPhilly and ImpactHubPhilly.

Connecting with audiences is, of course, the ultimate goal of any film festival (unless you’re in Cannes, and your goal is to wear tuxes and rub elbows, in which case, please proceed). And PIFF’s nearly-90-films-strong 2014 lineup has been chosen partially to ensure a wide range of genres and geographic origins, so that an evening of shorts by local filmmakers is juxaposed with Hong Kong thriller The Seventh Lie. For Barnett, the combination is crucial to the festival’s success. “It needs a moment like this, so we’re pulling it all together. That’s why bringing the international community is a key, I think, to really broaden your horizons,” he says.

Some films are deliberately paired by theme, but others suggest themselves as thematic fellows in more sidelong ways. Pennsylvania Holy Ghosts, by local director Ryan Ceri Pomeranz and shot in and around Scranton for some arresting visuals, follows the adrift young Clair as he returns to his grandfather’s cabin to make sense of his life and promises to be “four stories about death.” From Germany comes family-reconciliation drama Si-o-se-Pol, directed by Henrik Peschel, which examines the immigrant experience through a terminally-ill man’s search for his longvanished daughter, just the sort of inventively-shot indie one hopes to stumble across at a festival. They might seem like odd bedfellows, but they share an air of dreamlike melancholy.

But flexibility is also a crucial component of a successful year—particularly at an event where so many of the films may not be widely screened elsewhere, much less receive mass distribution—so PIFF tries to stay nimble in its programming. For example, as a reaction to the most successful evening of short films from last year’s fest, this year’s screenings have been curated and grouped by genre rather than by theme, that way if you’re in the mood for an evening of clever jokes, you won’t be surprised by sudden corpses. Of course, there’s always going to be a dose of the unexpected; that’s part of the fun of a film festival. A pet pairing of Barnett’s this year is the relationship drama Going Up screened alongside the avant-garde Spanish short La Hija. “I love to shake up the crowd,” he admits with a laugh.

ere’s what I learned about Boston last week: Its catcallers aren’t fundamentally different than Philly’s.

Oh, there were probably more kissy noises. I vastly preferred the novelty of “Fawkin’ gawgeous” over our city’s tired “Hey baby, can I get a ride?” There was, perhaps, more open staring.

I can’t help noticing the slight differences in how men yell at passing women in each different place I visit. In Mexico, for instance, the men seem to be legally required to comment on every woman who walks by, and most of the time, it actually feels more like a verbal high-five. In France, I find myself deliberating whether these strangers are making overtures or trying to sell me miniature Eiffel tower key chains. But then, I don’t know much French. In Marrakesh, I really wished I had a taser. I fucking hate Marrakesh. If there were a Yelp for Women, I’d give it one star.

This isn’t a column about why you shouldn’t catcall. There are a million of those, and catcallers don’t read them. This also isn’t about explaining how it’s not your fault you get harassed—that your clothes aren’t justifications for rude, invasive behavior. And it’s also not about how street harassment is a part of a larger system of sexist oppression, and the guys who try to explain how women should feel flattered or stop humblebragging are actually just letting you know they’d be terrible boyfriends.

I mean, those things are all true. But I think we can go further. The culture of street harassment and the socialization of women to be perpetually on guard are big issues—and we’re working on them. Hopefully, the next generation of girls will never have to know the anguish of l’esprit de l’escalier, thinking up a brilliant comeback to the douche who casually announced what he would do to her various body parts, only a block too late. In the meantime, though: We have to get around the city.

Sure, you could use the buddy system and watch each other’s backs. Walking with a dude is a pretty surefire way to skip the experience entirely. But realistically, I’ve got places to be and shit to do. So here we go: the three best ways to handle unwanted catcallers on the street.

Have a go-to retort. Over the last year or so, I’ve saved myself an infinite amount of regret by keeping a couple standard replies locked and loaded. There’s no second-guessing later about whether it was too weak or overkill—or whether it was a culturally appropriate reply that would communicate my nuanced reaction of boredom and disdain at men’s stunning capacity to identify aloud that I have red hair and also legs.

I’ve taken to just replying to most hollers with: “I know, right?” Consider learning it in a couple different languages.

It leaves little room for confusion as to whether we’ll be exchanging numbers, even as it saves a ton of time over trying to explain in sincere detail why their comment was problematic. Catcalls are usually monosyllabic anyway, a la “Hey!” or “Yo!” or “Girl!” or “Damn!” if not just some sort of pre-verbal noisemaking, so anything more complex on your part will surely be a waste of oxygen.

Channel your inner Simon Cowell. Many catcalls are unsolicited assessments of a woman’s appearance. If Jawn McPassyunk is rendering verdicts on human bodies, perhaps it’s

because he desperately craves feedback about his own look.

Feel free to express your appreciation for his impressive ability to almost grow a beard, or how his oversized T-shirt covers up his lifeless flat ass. Let him know, on a scale of 1 to 10 Fassbenders, how his stained pants and asymmetrical face are doing it for you. And he’ll be so grateful for the commentary!

After all, it’s a compliment when he does it, right?

Give out your number. Not your actual phone number. (Unless this person is actually legitimately fine and you want to, in which case, go to town.) A new feminist intervention hotline has been created to get us out of sticky corners when we feel unsafe and obliged to respond to someone’s advances. So rather than making up some random sequence starting with 215, give them this number: 647-496-0921. When dialed, it connects the caller to a series of recorded quotes from activist author bell hooks. No, you can’t make him drink, but you can still lead his stupid horseface to feminist water.

In a world full of “helpful” admonitions that women live with caution, lest they be held responsible for their own victimization, and where the threat of sexual violence has been used for millennia to keep people in line, it’s an act of revolution to walk freely and without fear. It’s not that the fear isn’t legitimate or that caution should be thrown to the wind. But while it’s doubtful Viktor Frankl ever said, “Girl, you wearing them shorts,” he certainly did say, “Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” 

Ride More, Pay Less Could Philly’s upcoming bike-share program be a way to help combat the financial burden of poverty?

B

eing slow, for once, may play to our advantage. Because when Philadelphia finally unveils its bike-share program next spring, it will be doing so in the shadow of 65 other American cities—and 700 across the globe—that have already launched similar public-bicycle-kiosk plans, executing them with varying degrees of success. The glass-halffull perspective: Our Johnny-come-lately status should give us a chance to learn from their mistakes and create a more efficient, more inclusive bicycling experience.

For starters, the key institutional players—the city, Bike Share Philadelphia, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia and others—have publicly stated that they plan on making sure there’s enough startup cash to fund the system through the entire year. That includes the likely-slower winter months—something for which New York’s Citi Bike system didn’t plan sufficiently.

But beyond the basic premise of creating a citywide system through which users can pay to borrow a bicycle at one streetside station and return it at another, there’s a piece of Philly’s bike-share plan that’s considerably more ambitious.

One key goal is to make bike-sharing available to the city’s low-income areas via a subsidy program and community outreach—while trying not to spend an exorbitant amount of the program’s startup cash doing so—and, what’s more, according to testimony from Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia president Alex Doty, to do so “without [requiring] credit cards.”

The plan to make that happen isn’t fully worked out yet.

According to architects and supporters of the upcoming system, there are a number of possible means by which it might be put into practice.

This is a major endeavor.

But if you have a bike that costs $1,500 to replace, we care very much who you are. The system needs to be able to trace the bike back to a person. And so far, every system [nationwide] has done that through the use of credit cards.”

Debit cards aren’t a useful alternative, either: If you don’t have a bank account, bike-share isn’t going to be the motivating factor to get one. So, according to Meddin, one of the ideas is to bring in a “backstop” organization—a local foundation or nonprofit—that’s willing to front the money for lowincome people. No far, there’s no such organization lined up.

An alternate version of the idea: If you’re a low-income resident who’s a member of a local community organization or a nonprofit group, the bike-share program could allow that group to vouch for you. That way, Meddin says, “we know who that person is and how to get in touch with that person.

It’s not going to be given away. There’s still going to be a connection to the person.”

As Doty noted, that organization might theoretically be the Y, a check-cashing store, a community group or a church. And once a user is vouched for, the bike-share system could reach into the relevant institution’s fund to subsidize the user.

How would all these efforts make anyone’s life better? Well, subsidized bike-sharing could potentially mean that low-income people—many of whom do not have access to a motor vehicle—would now be able to traverse the city free of cost, and no longer have to spend a high proportion of their income to hopscotch from bus to train and vice versa.

“We’re going to be focused on a portfolio of stations that meet a certain criteria in low-income neighborhoods,” Doty said. “We’re going to be recruiting station champions out of the neighborhood reach, one of those stations, organizing activities at those stations so that people can come, get familiar with it, learn how to use it, and then we can introduce them to discounted memberships and try and get them to use the system.”

For the moment, though: This is all a work in progress. 

I bike for my daily commute. Part of my motivation is the money it saves me; each trip is a SEPTA token earned. Perhaps surprisingly, in light of the economy, this approach to transit isn’t embraced by thrift-minded Americans as a whole.

According to the Alliance for Biking and Walking’s 2014 Benchmarking Report, only 14 percent of bicycle trips in the U.S. are made by those making less than $20,000 per year.

Almost half of trips made are by those earning between $20,000 and $70,000. And a higher percentage of people earning $70,000 and over (37 percent) are bicyclists than those making less than $20,000.

Part of this is because of the upfront cost of a bike. It’s the same reason poor people often ride public transit instead of a car: the expense to get started seems impossible to manage. A 2010 study conducted by a Portland, Oregon-based organization found that more than 60 percent of people expressed the cost of a bike as the main barrier to getting and riding one.

That’s where bike-sharing comes in. The cost for most programs across the U.S. is pretty low—about $60 for a yearly subscription. But according to a Federal Highway Administration survey, bike-share programs across the country have had problems reaching low-income people and people of color.

The people behind Philly’s bike share startup say they’re working on that. It was brought up at City Council; it was stressed during a Q&A session by Councilman Kenyatta

Johnson. The first obvious question: What about subsidizing bike-sharing for low-income Philadelphians? The working poor spend 6.1 percent of their income on transportation, compared to 3.8 percent for everyone else. And in Philadelphia and five other cities, their cost burden for housing is also higher, according to a 2008 Brookings Institution study.

Something like a subsidized, or discounted, bike ride wouldn’t just keep everyone a bit healthier, it could also create a situation in which more people have more spending money.

“There are many potential options,” Bike Share Philadelphia founder Russell Meddin says. He points to one idea that’s being used in Boston: New Balance Hubway, as their bike share program is called, actually offers a membership for $5, plus a free helmet, to qualified low-income residents, as part of a program put together by the Boston Public Health Commission. Eligibility is based upon receiving public assistance and/or living in low-income housing. New Balance also works with local community groups who serve low-income residents with specials on membership.

When Boston began the program, they initially worried they’d have to find a way to deal with members who lack credit cards—but this proved less of a problem than expected. They found about 60 percent of the people in low-income areas actually had them.

Philly is different. We’re much poorer than Boston. While statistics for credit-card ownership in low-income city neighborhoods is not yet available, it’s suspected to be significantly lower than 60 percent. Which is why the architects of the bike-sharing program are looking at ways to bring the service to certain communities without requiring a credit card.

“The challenge to having low-income people access the system is that the system needs to know each person that uses it,” Doty noted at the last city bike-share hearing. That’s unlike a SEPTA transit card, he pointed out: “SEPTA doesn’t care who you are. They want to know that you paid to get on the bus, but [SEPTA doesn’t] care whether you’re Bob or Jane.

Breaking in one last time: Use condoms, Gramps, even if there’s no risk of pregnancy, as condoms decrease your risk for contracting—or passing along—many STIs. (People always talk about sex workers as if they’re the source of all STIs. But where do sex workers get STIs? From their clients.)

But there’s no way to eliminate the risk. You have to decide if the possible risk of contracting an STI is worth the certain reward of a three-way with your cousin. And I think we both know the answer to that question.

My husband and I have been happy swingers for four years. Our issue? I’m pregnant. My husband had a vasectomy two years ago, and neither of us has wavered in our desire to remain childfree. We know the “father” is the male of a couple we play with regularly. We used protection, of course, but we know these things are never foolproof. Now, the failure rate for vasectomies, according to the Centers for Disease Control, clocks in at 0.01 percent, which is far lower than the failure rate for condoms (3 percent fail with “perfect use,” 15 percent with “typical use”).
