Love child: Notoriously raucous rocker Courtney Love plays the TLA this week.

WHAT’S HAPPENING — BEFORE IT HAPPENS ... MUSIC

Courtney Love

Courtney Love’s career has been defined by its unpredictability. After a seminal reign in the ‘90s as grunge’s top female performer (save, maybe, Kim Deal), along with a marriage to the ill-fated Kurt Cobain and the birth of their daughter, Love spent the late 20th century and early 21st as a caricature of her drug-addled id. She’s released four albums under the Hole moniker and one solo LP, most of which have been well-received by critics. Clean and sober since 2005, she’s making another performance push, which includes new material, a tour and, soon, a TV show she can’t really talk about. Like the music industry, Love’s career as an artist has changed drastically over the years, and she’s found new ways to survive—which aren’t all that Courtney Love-like. She’s a regular on the corporate gig circuit, has her own clothing line, and she even shills for Njoy electronic cigarettes in addition to her real work—you know, “playing for the kids,” she says. “What are you gonna do with me, you know?” Love shrugs. “You’re not really gonna put me in a Pepsi ad. So, e-cigarettes are kind of perfect.” The reality of being a rock star in the Internet age recently came to a head when Love put an ad on Craigslist for a musician to join her on tour—and she only got one response. Of course, the story made headlines on Huffington Post, and when asked about it, she confirmed the whole thing was true—and she’s not mortified by it, at all. “I don’t know why it became such a big story,” she says, adding that’s sort of normal these days. “Playing rock music is now a middle-class job for sure. Maybe upper-middle-class, but still middle class. You still get nice perks and stuff from being well-known, but in terms of the finances, it’s like you’re not gonna go be buying a 20-million-dollar mansion,” Love says. “You better really like your job.” (Read her full interview at philadelphiaweekly.com.) / RANDY LOBASSO Thurs., June 20, 8pm. $35. Happy Together

Nostalgia overload! Happy Together is fittingly headlined by the Turtles, who, aside from penning the namesake track, also happened to be one of America’s finest pop groups of the 1960s. Even slightly lesser known songs like “She’s My Girl” and “You Showed Me” managed to hold their

own against the heavy hitting tunes of the British Invasion, which is pretty amazing. 7:30pm. $39.50-$62.50. Dear Diary, Bye

SoLow Festival

Now in its fourth year, Philly’s annual SoLow Festival was founded with one very simple yet novel goal: present new and experimental solo works at little to no cost to artists or audiences. There are no applications or fees, and 100 percent of the revenue goes directly back into the artists’ pockets. Meanwhile, the public is only asked to pay as much as they can. This year, the 11-day grassroots event will host more than 40 performances at a variety of nontraditional venues across the city—from coffee shops, bars and street corners to parks, private homes and even a garage. The three shows debuting tonight are a perfect example of what sort of brilliantly offbeat entertainment locals can expect the next two weeks. During the two-night comedy “Dear Diary, Bye,” audiences will hear the hilarious boy-crazy and naïve musings of a 9-year-old girl, all documented in her 1984 diary and now read aloud by an adult man, while in a piece titled “You Have 20 New Voice Mails,” artist Steve Gravelle reveals the voicemails he’s been recording, cataloging and mixing for more than a decade, uncensored communications suitable only for mature ears. Finally, there’s the interactive food installation “Last Meals From Death Row,” which invites audiences to a South Philly row home to break bread with a group of strangers and enjoy the very same meal that one of death row’s most infamous inmates chose as their last. / NICOLE FINKBINER Through June 30. $0-$10. MUSIC

Joan Baez + Indigo Girls

These femme folk-rock icons may be from different eras, but both have played crucial roles in developing the genre. Baez was an early figure in the movement, first making a splash with traditional music in the late ’50s before taking note from a young Bob Dylan (whom she helped gain recognition) and moving in a more socially conscious direction. The Indigo Girls were part of the late ’80s folk revival, but instead of ripping off the past like some of their peers, they contributed by adding a punk-inspired edge. 6pm. $35-$65. OUTER LIMITS

M USI C

Juanes Juan Esteban Aristizabal Vasquez was born in Colombia 40 years ago. He had a guitar put in his hands early by his dad and brothers, and, at the ripe age of 16, he started his first band, Ekhymosis. The group had a great run: five LPs, decent sales and success in his native Colombia. But in 2000, he released his first solo album, Fijate Bien (Take a Good Look). Aptly, that title track is the opener on his newest, the MTV-released Unplugged. And this sound shall be the boss of his show at the Trocadero tonight, but fear not: It’s more than Juanes and a guitar. Even if it were, the Spanish-speaking troubadour is still guaranteed to put on a pretty charming show. The man’s an inspiration; his songs have been praised and wildly well-received over the past decade and a half. Accolades? Dude’s got ’em in spades: 20 Latin Grammy Award wins (and even more nominations), two non-Latin Grammys, nine MTV Awards and a bunch of others, including humanitarian honors. He’s sung for peace and charity countless times over the years, using his round, beautiful voice for good. This acoustic tour, if the Unplugged album is any indication, includes a full band, just not a ton of electricity and feedback. No matter. Even without any Spanish language skills, this room will be overflowing with love and music that’s full of positivity and joy. / BILL CHENEVERT

West Oak Lane Festival The 2013 West Oak Lane Festival is indoors, but with plenty of room in the Keswick to dance in the aisles and at your seats, it won’t feel like a typical night there. The nonprofit Ogontz Avenue Revitalization Corporation seeks to bolster community through the use of spaces and resources, and if this isn’t a great use of a space, we’re not sure what is. Tonight’s sure to be bursting with good vibes, literally, thanks to the talent: Roy Ayers! Bobbi Humphrey! Mind you, that’s just the headliners. The whole shebang gets kicked off early, with opening remarks at 2:30 p.m. The energy will skyrocket shortly thereafter, with the Urban Guerilla Orchestra making it nearly impossible to stay still, then the Clef Club Senior Youth Band will get a chance to show off its skills. That’s a great afternoon of music as is. But the heavy hitters start taking the stage soon after, starting with Carol Riddick, a Jill Scott contemporary and teammate in Philly soul and R&B. Her voice is stellar, recalling old-school Anita Baker, and her performance will offer a nice transition into Humphrey’s anticipated set. Humphrey’s a pioneer in the jazz world, and the flautist’s ear for soul/jazz/funk/R&B hybrids will be on display starting at 6:15 p.m. The legendary Ayers, who needs very little introduction, goes on at 8, and his skills go way beyond tickling with mallets. Good job, OARC, on tapping all this brilliance. / B.C. 2:30pm. $43. The Keswick Theatre, 291 No. Keswick Ave., Glenside. 215.572.7650. keswicktheatre.com

Willow Grove 2862 Moreland Road University City 3401 Walnut Street

There’s no such thing as someone only “kind of” liking guacamole: You either hate it, never had it or you’re an unabashed guaca-holic. For this inaugural fundraising event, MANNA (Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance) is now inviting all you avocado aficionados out there to come and put your taste buds to the test as Average Joes pit their above-average homemade guac against that of several trained professionals, including chefs from Mission Grill, Jose Pistola’s and Guerrilla Ultima. With a selection of local brews to help cleanse their palates, guests will go table-to-table sampling each variety of the glorious green stuff before ultimately casting their vote for their favorite. The chef with the most public votes will receive the People’s Choice Award, but it’ll be up to the judges—MANNA’s Executive Chef Keith Lucas and local food columnist Drew Lazor—to determine who goes home with the grand prize (a swanky two-night staycation and, of course, major bragging rights). Meanwhile, emceeing the event in her most glittery green dress is none other than the don/mother of Philly’s Drag Mafia, Miss Brittany Lynn. In exchange for the $20 ticket, not only will you get to consume all the guac you can, but you’ll be helping MANNA provide six nourishing meals to a neighbor battling a life-threatening illness such as cancer, renal disease or HIV/AIDS. So, yeah, anyway you chop it, that’s a pretty delicious deal. / N.F. 1pm. $10-$20. Fleisher Art Memorial, 719 Catharine St. 215.496.2662. mannapa.org

Anchee Min Ceebrated author Anchee Min has been there, done that, and she’s taken to writing it all down. A child in China during the repressive, genocidal dictatorship of Chairman Mao, Min was picked off a collective farm by Mao’s wife, Jiang Qing, to star in several propaganda movies. She eventually moved to the United States and became an author, penning the bestselling book Red Azalea, capturing her time in the labor camps as a child, and several pieces of historical fiction. Her latest work, The Cooked Seed, is the long-awaited follow-up to her captivating 1994 memoir. A 2000 New York Times magazine profile explored how, in Red Azalea, Min remembered her father’s interest in astronomy and how it led to his ouster from a key position (“They told him the sun represents Chairman Mao … and that talking about sunspots is criticizing the chairman.”), and she recounts a man being sentenced to death for having a consensual sexual relationship with a woman at a labor camp. Nearly two decades after that memorable debut, The Cooked Seed—from which she’ll read tonight—tells the true story of Min’s journey to the United States, where she’s lived since 1984, her path to understanding American culture (she began her time here without money or the ability to speak English) and teaching Americans she’s encountered about Chinese culture. / R.L.

The NSA’s Secret Ways Do Threaten Our Very Liberty by Benjamin Franklin bfranklin@philadelphiaweekly.com

C

ourteous reader, allow me to pose a question: What good is Freedom if, in order to protect said Freedom, we must destroy it? Mr. Obama himself, duly elected President of these United States, scoffed during his first Inaugural Address at the notion that Freedom must ever be traded for Safety, saying, “As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals.” But that fine speech is five years past, and alas, it is now an Unavoidable Conclusion that the President & his Administration have continued the work of his Predecessor, Mr. Bush, in allowing our National Security Agency to spend their days devouring tremendous portions of our telephone & computer records under terms of the greatest secrecy. Who you have spoken to, and when, and for how long—all such things are now laid bare to Agents of Government. As may be, too, what sorts of documents we seek to read & view & research; we cannot say for certain, as such details remain shrouded in darkness. We are told these Examinations of our most routine yet personal affairs are of noble purpose; that they will inform the Authorities in the prevention of wanton violence & terror. And yet I must point out a Simple Truth: that employing a fellow American to peer into your privy while you evacuate your bowels secures you neither Safety nor Happiness, it secures you only a Neighbor who knows the manner in which you wipe your arse. Gentle reader, upon hearing of the current state of affairs, a question may spring to your lips: What does this matter? If you do not plot against your State or Fellow Man, what care you who knows your words & habits? If you frequent The Blue Anchor rather than Old City Tavern, does it matter who sees you come and go, so long as your business is pure? To be sure, such questions are as seductive as the barmaid who wonders whether I would like another ale (I would). But they mislead us (as indeed might that very ale)—for in this Brave New World where all citizens hold, in the palm of our hands, a

wondrous device that grants us the Earth-spanning power of a global Post Office, Library & Town Square wherein to satiate our every curiosity & whim in but an instant, it is impossible to deny that we all, every one, may quickly be damned as potential traitors for the company we keep. You see, in Days Now Gone, all men & women, even the most worldly among us, lived most our lives in our own cities, in our own homes, at a vast distance from the rest of Humanity. For one person to know all other people was a Rarity indeed, given to precious few, though my Grandfather was fond of claiming that the old Lord Chancellor of England, the esteemed Sir Francis Bacon, was so Well-Met that no subject of the crown stood removed from him by more than six introductions. Today, though, we are a great Web of Connections; through the startling mechanisms of the Face Book & the Instagram, every American sits as close to the entire world as to the next stool at the tavern. But if I hoist a tankard with that fellow on the next stool, and that fellow be of foul mind and deed, am I to be under suspicion for his deeds as well, merely by virtue of sharing a place at the tavern with him? The idea is foolishness; yet this is what we entertain when we cast nets such as the National Security Agency has cast. To wit: Let us suppose, as we well might, that a colleague has long since Befriended you on the Face Book, & further that he has also Befriended his mother’s cousins—fully unaware that one of them lives a Secret Life of criminal enterprise. Unbeknownst to you, you are now yourself, in the eyes of the Watchers, part of a suspect web, your own actions and business deemed game to be peered at from afar in case you, too, might one day be guilty of some Crime. And in such light, your true and innocent behaviors can easily be questioned and misconstrued. You called a certain Medical Specialist— why? You sought to plan a route of travel from a particular church to an airplane terminal—why? We may be Innocent until Proven Guilty, but if a man is not treated as an Innocent, then what good is Innocence under the law? And indeed, watching all men & women casts

all under the clouds of Suspicion; it renders them Possibly Guilty rather than Presumed Innocent. To be treated as one who is Guilty is not living in a state of Liberty. If one must explain one’s doings, or be constantly fearful that they will be misinterpreted—ever a danger in a world where those with power abuse it without fear of Consequence—then one does not have true Freedom. Let Mr. Edward Snowden, a former servant of the Central Intelligence Agency, serve as an example for us all in this new Future. It was through his efforts that the American people learned of this intrusive Surveillance Network to which they had not consented; & for this service, Mr. Snowden now finds that his erstwhile masters have named him traitor. Many have called for him to be brought to harsh justice—however perverse the idea may seem that he need be brought to anything beyond a banquet in his honor. It seems the cruelest Irony that the Department of Homeland Security has a slogan: “If you see something, say something.” In witnessing an injustice and speaking out, Mr. Snowden did as instructed. He is now vilified for it. Indeed, his very life may be forfeit for his deeds. And yet if any one thing be as alarming as this Clandestine Surveillance Program itself, it is the very fact that the American people have been repeatedly instructed of its existence before Mr. Snowden’s sacrifice of self-interest, in Various & Sundry News Reports that did begin a full decade ago and continue through this year just past. This so-called scandal should come as a surprise to none; & yet it seems holding our attention upon matters of national import for more than a fortnight is a feat no longer within our grasp. A greater Tragedy for Liberty I cannot imagine, & for my part, I say we must not stand for it. Benjamin Franklin is the former American Postmaster General (1775–1776) and U.S. ambassador to France (1776–1785). His original, much longer draft of this op-ed has been edited by PW contributing writer Eric San Juan.

e’ve all seen or at least heard about the infamous vermin video. You know, the one from last month that captures a rat clan noshing on some leftover pizza inside Green Eggs Café’s Midtown Village location after hours, much to the horror of a group of passers-by. Personally, I didn’t get what all the fuss was about. Are rats not entitled to a delicious brunch? True, it’s not every day that we have viral videos drawing it to our attention, but we’re naïve to think there aren’t rats absolutely everywhere in this city. They’re going to creep into our restaurants from time to time. In Green Eggs’ case, owner Steve Slaughter notes that the rats were able to gain access to the restaurant due to a break in the sewage main. Everything has since been repaired, and after receiving the green light from the city Health Department, the restaurant is now re-open for business. And the hullabaloo aside, Green Eggs is one of the most popular brunch spots in town, so if I was going to be schooled in the art of breakfast-making, that’s exactly where I was going to go. Since the restaurant is known for both its sweet and savory menu—and, really, no one should ever be forced to choose— Chef Israel “Izzy” Romero and I went ahead and cooked one of each: fried chicken and waffle Benedict and red velvet pancakes. But before I go getting anyone’s hopes up, I should note that the average home cook will probably not be able to exactly reproduce these dishes. For starters, unless you happen to have a griddle, square molds and a pastry bag, chances are your red velvet pancakes are going to look more like a sloppy stack of flapjacks than an immaculate three-tier cake. So, think of the recipes as more of a template, making amendments as you see fit. Using the same basic batter for both the pancakes and the waffles, we started with the red velvet dessert, which only require a few more ingredients and steps than your average buttermilk pancakes. Ultimately, what really makes them exemplary is the stuff in between: two luscious layers of strawberry mascarpone (an Italian cheese and the main ingredient in tiramisu), a mix of pureed strawberries, powdered sugar and cream cheese. If you want some hidden surprises, sprinkle some chocolate chips into the batter as it cooks. I think it goes without saying here that the end result tasted like dreamy, cream-filled red clouds with sweet hints of strawberry and cocoa. Preparation for the fried chicken and waffle Benedict was also fast, but only because our seasonings and sauces had already been made, and the thinly sliced chicken cutlet was brined and ready to go. The only thing left to do was deep fry the chicken, poach the eggs and pour some batter into the waffle maker. Although I could wrap my head around the idea of poached eggs atop Southern fried chicken atop a waffle, once Izzy added sage maple syrup and Louisiana hot sauce to the equation, he completely lost me. Fortunately, both flavors had a way of fading into the runny yolks. In fact, I forgot there was even syrup on it.

Hip to be square: Green Eggs’ red velvet pancakes are three 7-inch squares with to-die-for layers of strawberry marscapone in between. (Photo by Ashley Catharine Smith)

I can’t imagine attempting to cook either dish hung over on a Sunday morning, but I would wait in line hung over on a Sunday morning to have Green Eggs cook it for me. That’s the thing about breakfast: It always tastes better when someone else makes it. Actually, that’s sorta my philosophy on all food. While I was chowing down on our creations, I quickly realized that I had an audience. Nearly every passer-by seemed to make it a point to peer into the window. I don’t know whether they were surprised to see someone eating there past 5 p.m., or if they were hoping to catch some furry friends going to town on another box of pizza. Either way, I can assure the brunch-lovers of Philadelphia that I didn’t see any unwelcome creatures of any kind on the premises.  Find all the recipes Nicole has learned from Philly chefs so far at forkingstupid.com.

Tom McCarthy’s reprisal as The Philly Fan underscores the role’s timelessness. By Nicole Finkbiner // nfinkbiner@philadelphiaweekly.com

F

or being such a notorious group, Philly sports fans sure are misunderstood. We boo not because we’re angry, but because we care. And, well, how else are you supposed to articulate disapproval when sitting in a crowd of a couple thousand? Yes, maybe these boos are often misdirected, and sure, they should never be accompanied by flying batteries or snowballs. But hurt has a way of manifesting itself in unusual ways. Putting this hurt into historical context and exposing the tattered hearts beating underneath the jerseys, face paint and foam fingers, two-time Barrymore Award winner Tom McCarthy reprises his longest-running role to date as The Philly Fan. Since first premiering back in 2004 as part of the Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe, the production has enjoyed several sold-out runs, and the fact that the current revival comes at a time when our championship prospects appear exceptionally bleak really underscores its timelessness. The show opens in a musty local sports bar the night before the 2005 Super Bowl, where, in a seemingly implausible scenario, McCarthy finds and befriends a Cowboys fan willing to patiently listen as he recounts the past 50 years of Philadelphia sports history. Over the next hour, stadiums rise and fall, legends are made and lost, and epic victories are followed by a perpetual slew of haunting defeats. Written by playwright Bruce Graham—another Barrymore winner—and conceived by McCarthy himself, ultimately The Philly Fan is as much an ode to local sports enthusiasts as it is to the city as a whole. Because for better or for worse, our local sports culture is very much ingrained into the character of Philadelphia. McCarthy might be a tad more eventempered than your average blue-collar, veteran Philly fan (strike up a conversation about the 1993 World Series with your dad for a frame of reference), but there’s nothing phony about the passion he exudes, bouncing between the bar stool, his couch and a set of stadium seats. Even with a few hackneyed jokes here and there and the inevitable beating of the dead horse that is Donovan McNabb, The Philly Fan is full of unexpected, fresh zingers that’ll resonate with fans both young and old, whether diehards or fair weathers. Listen closely, and you might just catch a quick jab at the Birds’ newly appointed commander-in-chief.

Be merciful, sports gods: Barrymore Award-winning actor Tom McCarthy in The Philly Fan.

As always, Theatre Exile has invited several guest speakers from the local sports community to take part in Q&A discussions with audiences throughout the show’s run. Stopping by for a pre-show discussion this Saturday is Mark Saltviet, author of The Tao of Chip Kelly, and on Sunday, the production will wrap up with two performances, each serving as a mini birthday bash for McCarthy. A new addition this year is the revolving lineup of food trucks parked outside for each performance, creating a more authentic game-time experience for audiences. The final minutes of The Philly Fan features video clips of McCarthy at the Phillies Parade in 2008, a sentimental moment that reminds the audience why they really bothered coming to the theater in the first place and why they’ll continue to stay glued to the TV every Sunday, regardless of how many disappointments they endure. When the production returns next year, fingers crossed, it’ll have a new ending.  Through Sun., June 23. 8pm. $25-$35. Studio X, 1340 S. 13th St. 215.218.4022. theatreexile.org

Coppola’s Bling Needs Some Zing Emma Watson notwithstanding, The Bling Ring’s chilling depiction of empty vanity is mostly tedious. By Sean Burns // sburns@philadelphiaweekly.com

A Much Ado About Nothing

Nothing to Ado Joss Whedon’s riff on the Shakespeare classic is a mess.

D

uring a 12-day break between principal photography and post production on The Avengers, writer-director Joss Whedon called his regular TV stock company and whipped up this larky little low-budget Shakespeare adaptation. Literally a home movie, Much Ado About Nothing was filmed in Whedon’s house. The spirit is commendable; why not unwind from the stresses of a massive blockbuster shoot by inviting all your old friends over to riff on the Bard of Avon’s funniest play? Problem is, it’s a terrible movie. Even by the standards of home movies. Indifferently photographed on smeary, consumer-grade, black-and-white digital video, Much Ado shovels mass quantities of iambic pentameter into the mouths of untrained third-string television actors, most of whom appear to have learned their lines phonetically. Not since Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet have I been so convinced that so many in a cast had so little idea of what they were saying. Half of these folks might as well have been speaking Klingon. For those who either flunked freshman literature or missed Kenneth Branagh’s and Emma Thompson’s sparkling 1993 bigscreen adaptation, Much Ado About Nothing is a featherweight romp of musical beds and mixed-up identities, with the “merry war” between proto-screwball stars Beatrice (nicely played by Amy Acker) and Benedick (the horrific Alexis Denisof ) bantering in a bickering animosity that can only mean true love. There’s also some gnarly business with a sinister plot by the King’s dastardly bastard brother trying to convince everybody that his rival’s new bride is a skank. Set in present-day with all the King’s men donning sleek Secret Service uniforms, Whedon’s Much Ado doesn’t do much with the modern update and fouls the nest at the outset with a wordless prologue suggesting Beatrice’s and Benedick’s rivalry is the result of a bungled one-night stand. Whedon packs the crowded frames with ill-timed pratfalls, constantly attempting everything he can to distract from the pleasures of the text. It’s all buffoonish clowning around, sexytime pantomimes and drunken dances. The barn door-sized performance by Denisof might be my new least favorite thing ever, as I kept waiting for him to slip on a banana peel. It’s a pretty funny play on its own, fellas. There’s no need to keep pulling faces and bumping your head against stuff. I went home and took another look at Branagh’s version, and now suddenly Keanu Reeves doesn’t seem so bad in it. (Sean Burns)

ntonioni watches too much TMZ in writer-director Sofia Coppola’s fifth feature, a detached portrait of hollowed-out youth culture. Addicted to brand names, pseudo-celebrity and status updates while seemingly incapable of any meaningful human interaction, the children of The Bling Ring aren’t just gazing into the void; they are the void. Forget about World War Z. This is the real zombie movie opening this weekend. Working from a Vanity Fair article by Nancy Jo Sales, Coppola lightly fictionalizes the true-life 2009 tale of Hollywood teens who burglarized the homes of their favorite tabloid stars to the tune of some $3 million in shiny designer stuff. But they weren’t in it for the money; these kids were quite well off. No, it was about celebrity—their lust to bask in the reflected stardom, however furtively under cover of night. On the page, this sounds ripe for a raucous satire, but despite a few occasionally hilarious grace notes, Coppola is too sensitive a filmmaker to give us another Spring Breakers. The Bling Ring is a much moodier picture; she seems genuinely curious about these kids and what makes them tick. The result is an introspective movie about people to whom introspection is a foreign concept. There’s no there there, which I think is probably the point. But it gets awfully old. The delicate wisp of a storyline finds new kid at school Marc (Israel Broussard) falling in with klepto Rebecca (Katie Chang) and a mostly interchangeable gaggle of blondes. They hang out at the same nightclubs as Kirsten Dunst, get wasted and take an awful lot of selfies. Casual afterschool larceny escalates to burglary one night when they decide to drop by Paris Hilton’s house. Celebrity gossip websites make it easy to find out if she’s in town, and they correctly assume that Paris would be dumb enough to leave a spare key under the doormat. (It’s on an Eiffel Tower keychain because of course it is.) A towering monument to toxic vanity and terrible taste, the Hilton homestead, I initially thought, was the result of Coppola and the production designer getting a bit too carried away with gaudy sight gags. Later, I discovered that Paris allowed pal Sofia to shoot inside her actual house. So, it’s true: You can’t make this shit up. After that, The Bling Ring mostly drives around in circles, with our gang ripping off Orlando Bloom, Audrina Patridge and, finally, Rebecca’s white whale role model, Lindsay Lohan. The movie is broken up with flash-forwards to the kids offering carefully

The kids aren’t all right: The Bling Ring stars (from left) Taissa Farmiga, Israel Broussard, Emma Watson, Katie Chang and Claire Julien as rich teenage thieves who target celebrities.

rehearsed sound bytes for reporters, as if auditioning for a reality show of their own. It’s all well and good for about 45 minutes, which, unfortunately, is only half the length of the movie. Coppola’s last two films, Marie Antoinette and Somewhere, fell prey to a similar design flaw. After establishing an evocative mood and mileu, the pictures just sort of drift away for a little while before eventually arriving at their preordained endings. They say there are no second acts in American lives, and apparently not in post-Lost in Translation Sofia Coppola movies, either. The Bling Ring’s all-important surfaces are granted a sickly digital pallor thanks to cinematographers Chistopher Blauvelt and the late, great Harris Savides. In the lead roles, Chang and Broussard sleepwalk through their scenes in a vaguely narcotized trance. It’s a chilling depiction of emptiness, also tedious. The film gets a much-needed shot in the arm whenever we return to Emma Watson’s Nicki, who spends a too-small part pouting across the picture in full bitch-goddess reign. She’s calculating, conniving and exudes an amazing disdain for everybody and everything that’s simultaneously repulsive and kind of absurdly hot. Nicki’s being home-schooled by her dingbat mom

(Leslie Mann, excelling, as always, at being annoying) in a curriculum based on Rhonda Byrne’s self-help book, The Secret, which is a flourish so funny, it must be true. She sees the arrest as her chance to finally make it in Hollywood, announcing to reporters that it was an “important learning lesson” and what Nicki would really like to do is run an important philanthropic organization or a country. Watson tears into every exchange with a vigor that knocks Coppola’s anesthetized aesthetic clear off its axis. She seems to have strutted in from an Election-era Alexander Payne movie that I wished I could have been watching instead. It’s somehow amusing that Watson’s already a bigger star than any of the flash-inthe-pans burglarized by The Bling Ring, and Nicki seems poised for similar status when she gets out of jail. I’d almost like to see a self-reflexive meta-sequel in which kids break into Nicki’s house, and Emma Watson’s, too. 

Higher Ground The Transplants go mostly rap-free on their latest, says Skinhead Rob. By Randy LoBasso // rlobasso@philadelphiaweekly.com

T

here are about four people within American punk rock who can basically do no wrong, one of whom is Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong, who, after founding and destroying Operation Ivy in the ‘80s, created the seminal crew with former Op Ivy bassist Matt Freeman. You remember them from when they scored a huge hit with the 1995 single “Time Bomb”—and if you stopped listening there, you’re doing it way wrong, because Rancid released several more successful and influential albums, including the ska-reggae-influenced Life Won’t Wait, the hardcore self-titled LP. But in between all that, he also found time to release a solo reggae album and collaborate with blink-182 dummer (and former Rancid and AFI roadie) Rob Aston to create a punkhip-hop genre in the Transplants, using loops, dub beats, samples and a mess of guest singers—Eric Ozenne of the Nerve Agents and B-Real of Cypress Hill, to name a couple— to create an unmistakable sound. You probably heard their hit “Diamonds and Guns” on Garnier Fructis shampoo commercials, too, but please, don’t hold that against them. PW spoke with the Transplants’ Aston, aka Skinhead Rob, ahead of their Electric Factory gig opening for Rancid, about how the project has changed over the years and what to expect from their third album, In a Warzone, dropping June 25.

we wanted to do when we started to record and write this album. We wanted to strip it down with no bells and whistles.

PW: How did the recording for the most recent album go? Rob Aston: This time around, it was all of us: Travis [Barker], Tim and myself. We would meet at Travis’ studio in the morning and work all day. And then usually we would walk out of there with a couple songs done each day—or at least the skeletons for songs almost done. Everyone’s always open to hear suggestions and constructive criticism. No one gets their feelings hurt in this band when it comes to that.

How do you guys find time to write—or even practice— with all of the projects you have going on? Out of all of us, Travis is a monster. All of us stay busy, but Travis stays the busiest. He is always working. He is always in the studio. He is always practicing or producing. Tim also. He stays busy with Rancid and other acts he’s producing. I have got my Death March thing to keep me busy. We all like to work and make music. It’s what we do. Whether it’s us working on Transplants, or us working on whatever projects we got going on. It’s true when they say, “the devil has work for idle hands.” 

How would you say that the third album fits into your catalog? It’s more straightforward punk rock. We only have [hip-hop] guests on two songs. The rest of it is pretty much straightforward punk. There are no sound effects or loops. That’s what

Why did you decide to go that route, being as the first two albums are so hip-hop oriented? How this album sounds, looking back, is kind of how I wished the other albums sounded. I guess the other albums played their part. People still like those albums and songs on those albums, but it’s not my favorite work. I wish I had spent a little more time on some subject matter. I would have changed a couple things and some stupid lyrics. There are some songs that I hear where I’m like, ‘Ugh, I should have said something better here,’ where I thought I should have written about a topic a little more important than just getting hammered. At the same time, people want to have a good time, and people want a song they can get shitfaced to. You seem to have come up in the grassroots punk rock scene. You worked for Rancid, right? Before I worked for Rancid, I worked for AFI, back in the ‘90s. That’s how I got my foot in the door with everything. Through the AFI guys, I met the Rancid guys [and] I ended up working for them. We ended up writing music for the Transplants before I went on tour with them.

Let me see if I’ve got this straight, MUD: You like D, you’re into D, and D is sweet and hot and funny. But you’ve dumped D three times because your mommy wouldn’t approve, and you’re really close to your mommy ... and you’re worried that D is the gay stereotype in this relationship?

Maybe you should let disabled men decide if they want to be used for sex. Some won’t mind, SCWLW, just as some gay guys don’t mind being used for sex by bisexual and/or closeted guys who aren’t interested in dating other men, just fucking them. Disabled adults are adults, and they’re free to make their own choices. So long as they’re making informed choices—so long as you’re not misleading anyone to get into his pants and/or up on his wheels—you’re not doing anything wrong.  On this week’s Savage Lovecast, Dan talks with a former stripper about her lurking shame. I am a 23-year-old female devotee of disabled men. I have a strong desire to be with men with all types of disabilities, but I mostly gravitate toward severe CP and quadriplegics. But my passions in life involve travel, sports, my bike, camping, overseas disaster aid and a whole load of other things that are made either difficult or impossible when you can’t walk. I have always dated able-bodied men as a result. I would feel guilty fucking a disabled guy—I would see an “expiration date” on our relationship. Would it be wrong for me to seek out disabled guys just for sex? Some Chick Who Likes Wheels

I’m a 40-year-old gay man who has his life fairly together (career, home, etc.). But I’ve never had a LTR. I’ve dated this guy “D” three times, and I broke it off three times. I’m attracted to D, he is sweet, hot and funny, but he’s obviously gay. I worry that my mom might not like him—she has made snide comments about obviously gay guys “advertising it”—and I am very close to my mom. D and I have started hanging out again, and we are having fun. He is not mad at me. The plan is to just hang out, and I just don’t know WTF I am doing. Should I just see how things go? Messed Up Dude

The incest fetishists you meet in chat rooms and get on the phone? For all they know, you could be alone in a room stirring a jar of mayonnaise with a slotted spoon. And for all you know, NASTY, the incest fetishists you’re meeting in chat rooms could be police officers looking to bust men who are actually raping their daughters. Just sayin’. As for your problem, NASTY, most people with incest fantasies insist that they’re not turned on by the idea of having sex with their actual parents, siblings or children. Incest scenarios turn them on abstractly, but they have ZERO interest in their own siblings or parents or children specifically. That can’t be true for all incest fetishists—statistically speaking—but any incest fetishists who’re turned on by the thought of actually fucking their sibs/parents/children would have a motive and/or the good sense to lie. But let’s set your specific fantasy aside for the moment—which is an upsetting one for most people to contemplate (because ick), particularly those who were sexually abused by family members (because rape)—and focus on the underlying question: Does exploring something taboo through fantasy make someone likelier to go and do that thing in real life? The evidence we’ve got about porn points to no. “Perhaps the most serious accusation against pornography is that it incites sexual aggression,” Melinda Wenner Moyer wrote in the July 2011 issue of Scientific American (“The Sunny Side of Smut”). “But not only do rape statistics suggest otherwise, some experts believe the consumption of pornography may actually reduce the desire to rape by offering a safe, private outlet for deviant sexual desires.” What you’re producing for the men you get on the phone is a kind of pornography, NASTY, and Moyer demonstrates that the wider availability of Internet pornography has correlated strongly with falling rates of sexual violence—and incest between an adult and a minor is sexual violence. “Within the U.S., the states with the least Internet access between 1980 and 2000—and therefore the least access to Internet pornography—experienced a 53 percent increase in rape incidence, whereas the states with the most access experienced a 27 percent drop in the number of reported rapes, according to a paper published in 2006 by Anthony D’Amato, a law professor at Northwestern University,” Moyer writes. “It is important to note that these associations are just that—associations. They do not

prove that pornography is the cause of the observed crime reductions. Nevertheless, the trends ‘just don’t fit with the theory that rape and sexual assault are in part influenced by pornography,’ [Professor Christopher J.] Ferguson [of Texas A&M] explains. ‘At this point, I think we can say the evidence just isn’t there, and it is time to retire this belief.’” The complicating factor here, of course, is that you’re leading these men to believe that you’re actually doing it, i.e., the noises they’re hearing are your daughter blowing you and not you stirring a jar of mayo. So will the men you talk to want to rape their daughters in real life because you’ve led them to believe that you’re raping your daughter? Hard to say ... and even harder to get data on. But the people doing taboo shit in porn are actually doing it, and the data suggests that watching others do it, i.e., living vicariously through porn performers (who are sometimes faking it, but still), leads to fewer people acting on taboo desires in real life, not more.

I’m a straight guy in my early 30s with an amazing girlfriend of two years. A few months ago, I felt open enough to share my taboo fantasy: father/daughter incest. My GF, to my delight, not only understands the fantasy but enjoys participating in it! Quickly: I have ZERO interest in this kind of thing actually happening. I understand the kind of damage that sexual abuse can do and has done to many, many women, and I would never pursue something like this in real life. Now the problem: We’ve added the “wrinkle” of me talking to another man on the phone while my GF fellates me. The man—a stranger, someone we found online—has been led to believe that I am being fellated by my daughter while we speak. Of course, he can hear the noises associated with said activity while he and I are talking. We do not in any way lead these guys to believe that they have a chance to meet us. We want to enjoy our sexual fantasies, but we worry that we could be inadvertently encouraging someone to make their fantasies a reality. Any advice? No Acronym Seems to Yodel
