In response to Josh Kruger’s column about the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s decision to grant police the right to search automobiles without a warrant.

What is glossed over in the article is that police still need probable cause to search the car and that the federal criminal system has operated under the same rule now applicable in Pennsylvania for almost 30 years. Police cannot legally just search a car because they want to. Moreover, the Pennsylvania rule had many exceptions to the warrant requirement. Police could search a car without a warrant if exigent circumstances existed, for their safety, if contraband was in plain view, or police had no prior opportunity to obtain a warrant.

Contrary to the tenor of the article, the sky isn’t falling and Pennsylvanians still are protected by the federal constitution.

Night Market in Old City Everyone knows there’s more to this city’s palate than cheesesteaks, soft pretzels and wudder ice—and more to this city’s culture than Center City and the Historical District. Crimes of the Heart

These Ms are born of names, not candy nuggets: John Medeski, Papa Mali, Stanton Moore and Rob Mercurio, and they’re meant to melt your mind, not on your tongue. Essentially, they’re a supergroup—Medeski of Medeski, Martin & Wood fame; Mercurio and Moore hail from Galactic and Mali’s own 7 Walkers/Double Uptown Shotgun. They were pulled together by a superjam date at NYC’s Le Poisson Rouge almost a year ago, and it became pretty evident that fans would buy what they’re selling: plain ol’ funk, jazz funk, southern funk, catfish funk, funk of damn near every variety.

They’re undoubtedly tied to New Orleans. Papa Mali, especially, is an axe man who often works with the original members of the Grateful Dead (namely drummer Bill Kreutzmann) and hangs out and casually shreds at will at the Maple Leaf Bar. Meanwhile, one of Galactic’s seminal recordings is their live set at Tipitina’s down the street. There will be some extended improvisations tonight, no doubt, ones steeped in Louisiana voodoo and moonshine magic. Folks who get down with the Bonnaroos, Camp Biscos and moedowns, take heed: this jam sesh is right up your alley. This funk-jam genre has seen some similar personnel mix-ups with bands like Lettuce and Oysterhead, but you never know how long they’re going to last. Just a tour? A few records?

Preakness at the Piazza Many Philadelphians of the upscale variety tend to enjoy horse racing—what with the fancy dress, fine food and drink, and wagers on the line. And even more of us, both high brow and low, want to find a cure for multiple sclerosis, the potentially debilitating disease affecting between 2 and 2.5 million people around the world and a reported 14,000 in the greater Philadelphia area alone. Preakness at the Piazza is the annual gala that ties them together, a top-drawer fundraiser in which the Preakness Stakes horserace—which actually takes place at the picturesque Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland—is shown on the large screen before a festive crowd. Notably, 100 percent of its proceeds benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, a foundation meant to provide support, awareness, connections and funds toward researching a cause and cure for MS. Last year, they put $40 million toward those efforts.

Thanks to attendees’ ornate hats, colorful bowties and what-have-you, organizer Pari Hashemi defines Preakness at the Piazza as the place where, “young professionals get together and dress up while supporting a great organization.” (Duke & Winston is doing its part by offering a bright patterned bowtie as an official PATP accessory, with proceeds from its sales also benefiting the NMSS.) Uh Huh Her

Yoga on the Steps

It’s difficult to not get behind a band that uses a cool PJ Harvey record as its name. But the similarities aren’t as sonic as they are in creative philosophy: Woman-positive, cathartic and a little bit queer. See, Leisha Hailey’s been out and proud for almost 25 years now, no small feat for a woman who came out before the ‘90s began. She gave acting a spin for six years in the mid-2000s, starring in Showtime’s The L Word as bi journalist Alice Pieszecki. And the other half of Uh Huh Her is Camila Grey, Hailey’s partner, a former member of Mellowdrone plus a touring and production support player manning bass and keys for Melissa Auf der Maur, Adam Lambert, Tricky, Dre and Busta.

Uh Huh Her’s music, though, is seemingly their own and born of a loving musical and personal relationship. They specialize in airy but futuristic and upbeat emotional electropop, like lesbian lounge music for Italo disco clubs. Their latest LP, the two-month-old Future Souls, feels like a feminine Junior Boys or a synth-heavier Cardigans. These two have definitely listened to their fair share of Erasure, Pet Shop Boys and Boy George, too. Jonathan Moreno: The Politicization of Bioethics The journal Nature calls his work “fascinating and unsettling;” New York Times calls it “earnest and chilling.” Penn professor Jonathan Moreno, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress who has influenced national security policy, is set for a sit-down conversation with Ethical Humanist Society of Philadelphia’s Hugh Taft-Morales, as part of its “Ethics on the Square” program, to discuss the politicization of bioethics and his acclaimed book, The Body Politic, named a Best Book of 2011 by Kirkus Reviews.

What makes a moral action in our scientific age? What is the scope of ethics in terms of military or medical decisions today? What circumstances lead to our decisions, and do these circumstances have an impact on the morality, or immorality, of our actions? Watch the Polls Follow the Money As the Democratic campaigns for governor have unfolded, the dollars have spoken as loud as the speeches.

T WAS A FIGHT EVERYONE WANTED TO JOIN. THE DEMOCRATIC GUBERNATORIAL NOMINATION PROCESS ATTRACTED SOME FAMILIAR FACES AND RELATIVE UNKNOWNS FROM ALL OVER PENNSYLVANIA READY TO DEBATE EACH OTHER — POLITELY, AT FIRST — WITH THE GRAND PRIZE BEING A SHOT AT UNSEATING UNPOPULAR GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT IN NOVEMBER. IT WAS A MATCH THE DEMOCRAT, NO MATTER WHO S/HE WAS, WOULD BE LIKELY TO WIN.

VOTER REMINDER: Each year, the local good-government group the Committee of 70 puts together an election guide for those among us who haven’t been following the candidates all through campaign season. This week’s May 20 primary is no different, so if you’re looking for some basics on who and what you could be voting for, check them out at Seventy.org. Just click on “2014 Election” to find a breakdown of the candidates and questions upon which you may care to take a stand.

Some will vary upon where you live: State Senator, State Representative, City Committeeperson and U.S. Representative. And then there are the ones we’ll all be voting for: Governor, Lt. Governor, the at-Large City Council seat, and ballot questions—including one on the issue of “resign to run,” another on raising the minimum wage for city contractors (which Mayor Nutter has already done by executive order) and a third on changing the charter for city contracts.

There were debates. And for the most part, all eight Democrats—Allyson Schwartz, Rob McCord, Tom Wolf, Katie McGinty, Max Myers, John Hanger, Ed Pawlowski and Jo Ellen Litz—seemed to agree on the core issues. They were pro-severance tax on fracking, pro-medical marijuana and decriminalization. They wanted to step up school funding, update— but not eliminate—the liquor system, and expand Medicaid to poor Pennsylvanians, as outlined by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. There were emails to voters. Lots of them. They asked for cash. They exclaimed via subject heads: “I can’t believe this” (a Dec. 31 Allyson Schwartz campaign email regarding “a fundraising report”). They had questions: “Hey, can we chat?” (a Jan. 10 Wolf campaign email regarding a debate). They gave us some welcome news: “Advisory: Hanger ‘Legalize Marijuana’ Billboards Unveiled (a Jan. 27 Hanger email regarding, well, those billboards). They linked us back to the candidates’ Facebook pages, Twitter feeds and Youtube channels.

There were polls. Schwartz led most of them throughout 2013, likely due to her name recognition and media frontrunner status. The last poll of the year, conducted by Public Policy Polling, found her leading the pack, with 21 percent of the vote; followed by Pittsburgh City Councilman Jack Wagner, with 17 percent; then state Treasurer McCord, at 10; McGinty at 9; former environmental secretary Hanger at 8; and everyone else—including Wolf—nabbing 4 percent or less. The positive for those 4 percent and under: 27 percent of Pennsylvanians were undecided, and Wagner hadn’t officially joined the race.

Just a few weeks into the new year, that lack of enthusiasm seen in the polls was about to change. The last week of Janu-

ary, Wolf, the former treasurer of the state under Gov. Ed Rendell, released his first commercial with a small portion of the $10 million of the personal fortune he lent himself.

The one-minute spot, titled “Meet Tom,” introduces him in a way that everyone can understand: By recounting the positive highlights of his life. Wolf grew up in central Pa.; he was in the Peace Corps, “and then he went to MIT,” notes his daughter, Katie, in the ad, “where he earned his Ph.D.” Wolf grew his family business into the largest supplier of kitchen cabinets in the United States, and he shares “20-30 percent” of profits with his employees. “I’ve always thought that when our company does well, so should our workers,” Wolf says earnestly.

PoliticsPA.com reported that the “Meet Tom” commercial cost the Wolf campaign $370,000 and hit every broadcast market in the commonwealth, plus cable. The clip aired during the uber-important 7pm hour, in which old people (i.e. voters) watch Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune. “Television will likely be a major tool in the Wolf campaign,” PoliticsPA wrote of the ad buy. “He doesn’t have the name recognition of some of the other candidates, but he has an unparalleled bank account.”

The next poll, released February 24 and conducted by Harper, saw Wolf take a commanding lead ahead of all other candidates. In two months, Wolf went from less than four percent of the vote to 40 percent. The next highest candidate was Schwartz, at 14 percent, but she still trailed “Not sure” by five points.

The next two polls—conducted by Franklin & Marshall and The Morning Call—found Wolf leading his next opponent by, respectively, 31 points and 25 points. >>>

>>> CONTINUED As this is being written, Wolf is still in the lead, by far—despite harsh attacks by Schwartz and McCord, the latter of whom tied him to a white raceriot defendant in York—proving when you lend yourself $10 million of your own money to run a gubernatorial campaign in Pennsylvania (plus have already spent $5 million on advertising through March, and, in the closing weeks of the campaign, is rumored to be spending $1 million per week), anything’s possible.

This is, of course, not unique. In 2012, the state’s GOP field for U.S. Senate began almost as crowded in light of the potential to take on a weak, meek U.S. Sen. Bob Casey. The Pennsylvania Democrat had written no legislation that became law since taking office five years prior, had voted with President Obama in lockstep, and was pretty much perceived as a dud— even by U.S. Senate standards.

The GOP was eager to sink its teeth into him, as candidates for the Republican primary took their shots, tied him to the president, and, during one debate, made fun of him for having once walked through the streets of Philadelphia and not been recognized. (Which, if true, is totally worthy of ridicule.)

In that race, relative unknown candidate Tom Smith, who ran a coal mine in Western Pennsylvania and has an estimated net worth of $60 to $70 million, lent himself $6.8 million. He ran more commercials than anyone else, then defeated state party-backed candidate Steve Welch and Tea Party-backed candidate Sam Rohrer. Smith lent himself another $10 million during the last month of the general election against Casey, but it wasn’t good enough. The candidate who’d been able to woo the base of the Pennsylvania Republican Party months earlier couldn’t convince voters he was ready for prime time.

Studies show that winning candidates outspend their opponents 91 percent of the time—no surprise there—and elections are getting a hell of a lot more expensive. In Florida, for instance, Tea Party candidate Rick Scott won the 2010 gubernatorial race by pumping $85 million into the campaign, $73 million of which was his own. The record up until that point was $24.6 million.

Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg put a whopping $109 million into his 2009 campaign, which he barely won; Corbett raised just under $30 million during his 2010 election to rule the commonwealth; Barack Obama and Mitt Romney both spent about $1 billion on their last presidential race.

Money isn’t just really important for winning. It’s also coming from weird, oft-shady places. Corbett, for instance, received $6 million from the Republican Governor’s Association during his first campaign, $1.5 million of which was both untraceable and 100-percent legal. In general, less than one percent of Americans contribute about 68 percent of all election funding.

The other thing going on here: 2014 is an off-year election. Voters are less likely to pay attention and less likely to turn out. About 6 million voters turned out to vote in Pennsylvania in 2008, when Barack Obama was on the ballot; two years later, about half of them cast a ballot. And then-Attorney General Tom Corbett easily won his race after taking millions of dollars from both natural gas interests and still-untraceable sources laundered through the Republican Governors Association.

Pennsylvania is one of just 11 states with minimal or no limits on campaign finance. You can give as much as you want to individuals in this state, and as often as you want. Watchdog groups like Common Cause PA have pushed for changes like better disclosure, contribution limits, bans on using funds for personal expenses, but it’s fallen upon deaf ears in the General Assembly. Over eight years, Gov. Ed Rendell could not garner enough bipartisan support to change the system, and even today, while all candidates have openly spoken of favoring campaign finance reform, you’ll be hard-pressed to find anyone actually doing anything about it.

During a late February debate, Wolf noted he had a “very special perspective on this”—considering he’d lent his campaign so much money already— and basically took the same stance then-Senator Barack Obama took in the 2008 elections: Hate the game, not the player.

“I’m playing by the rules of the game as it exists right now, but I really don’t like those rules, and if I were elected governor I would do everything in my power to change those rules and make sure that money is not as important as it is right now,” he told attendees at the Pennsylvania Progressive Summit.

Being best prepared has allowed Wolf to run away as the Democratic frontrunner, and unless something dramatic occurs between now and May 20, he’ll be the candidate. And, very likely, a good one. But financing your own campaign with tens of millions of dollars just seems undemocratic, almost oligarchical. Because likely here in Pennsylvania—like 91 percent of congressional races around the country—the gubernatorial candidate with the most money, wins. n

The Social Media Smackdown Twitter’s instant messaging is playing a larger—and weirder—role in Pennsylvania campaign politics.

P

icture this: You’re a legislative staffer or social media director at one of the Pennsylvania Democratic candidates’ campaigns, and your boss is taking part in a debate right now.

As s/he does this, you’re supposed to highlight your boss’ key points, tweeting them out to the world at large, corresponding with and re-tweeting journalists who’ve written things that make your boss sound awesome.

Promote your candidate, make them come off as positive as possible on the Internet after the debate is over. That’s all you need to do.

But it’s easier said than done. There’s a wild card. Everyone’s opponent’s umbrella organization is on Twitter, too.

And it’s watching. It’s following you, and it’s been prepping and honing zingers all week. It’s mean. It’s angry. It’s hilarious. It’s trollish. And it’s the Twitter feed for the Pennsylvania Republican Party.

When the Democrats vying for Gov. Corbett’s position have debated this year, @PAGOP, the Pennsylvania GOP’s social media moniker, has been at its battle station, verbally kicking each hopeful in the shins with typographical vitriol and sarcasm, even as the Democrats have landed jabs at each other. And even as I speak over email to a representative for this story, she can’t help but take a few more swings at the Democrats to make her points about social media.

“As Republicans, we work hard to share our message of limited government and fiscal responsibility with as many voters as possible,” says Megan Sweeney, communications director for the Pennsylvania Republican Party. “Twitter allows us to share our Republican message while holding Democrats accountable for their policies in a direct and immediate way.”

She’s not kidding. During a March 23 debate, for instance, @PAGOP didn’t waste any time asking the candidates where they stood on the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. “@AllysonSchwartz Are you proud of your vote for #Obamacare? #DTeam #PAGov,” the @PAGOP Twitter feed blasted during that debate.

Obamacare in its current form, of course, is not popular among Pennsylvanians. Says Sweeney: “As the first candidate in the country to actually brag about her role in writing Obamacare, we felt it was important to note Pennsylvania’s strong opposition to the bill.”

Then, the feed attempted to get the candidates on record supporting or opposing one another’s supposed, unpopular positions. “@RobMcCordPA Do you think @WolfForPA’s sales tax increase is fair? #DTeam #PAGOV,” @PAGOP tweeted at 8:51pm on March 28. “@McGintyForGov do you think its right for @WolfForPA to try to buy the election? #DTeam #PAGOV #PACD,” it wondered.

Back when the Democratic primary field was crowded, the Pennsylvania Republican party came up with a pretty slick name for it: The “D-Team.” That tag was sort of a take on The A-Team, meant to show the Democrats’ ineptitude through examples of faults and photo collages of the candidates looking either clumsy or angry, captured in shots in which they were either not ready to be photographed or were unaware they were being photographed.

This is what you have to deal with. Over the course of the hour in which you’re promoting your boss, @PAGOP would ask similar passive-aggressive questions to the other candidates’ Twitter feeds. According to Sweeney, this is both a job and natural progression of their online work.

“From PA Democratic Party Chairman Jim Burn saying there was no super secret candidate running for governor, to the PA Democrats’ refusing to endorse any candidate in the race, it became apparent that even the Democrats thought they had a lackluster group of candidates,” she says. “We decided to create dteam2014.com as a resource for voters to learn the facts about these uninspiring group of candidates.”

At one point during the debate, the @PAGOP account posts a photo of Tom Wolf and Allyson Schwartz—Wolf is looking away from the camera with his eyes halfway closed; Schwartz is making an accidentally-funny face—with “I [HEART] Obamacare” written between them.

As the candidates generally agreed during this forum that more state money needs to be put in education, @PAGOP tweets at each pol with the hashtag #NewMath, claiming, “Fact Check: @GovernorCorbett has made record investment in state education spending ...” which is actually true, in pure numbers, but not total funds, state dollar percentage or spending per pupil.

During other debates, @PAGOP asked Rob McCord if his staff planned to “physically grab” anyone on stage that night. That’s a reference to the Dems’ February endorsement convention in Hershey, in which, among other things, McCord’s and Schwartz’s campaign staffers got into a clash, according to a censored column in the Philadelphia Daily News.

Later, @PAGOP would take on Wolf with the hashtag, #WhatsWolfHiding. During a pro-fracking rally in Harrisburg, the GOP asked the Democrats, “How many shale jobs would there be under your plan to BAN natural gas drilling?”

And they’ve created a website titled HasWolfReleasedHisTaxReturnsYet.com. When you click on it, it reads, in large print, “Nope.”

The Comedian Who Would Be a Councilman N.A. Poe wants to “boot the PPA” and legalize marijuana—from a seat in City Hall.

O

ver the last few days, City Council candidate N.A. Poe and a small gang of supporters and campaign staff have been criss-crossing Center City looking for parking tickets. The comedian and rabble-rouser well known for his activism around marijuana legalization has been branding himself as a thorn in the side of the Philadelphia Parking Authority, and as we speak outside a Center City café, he assures me at least 75 drivers are well aware of his campaign tactics.

When Poe’s name shows up on Tuesday’s ballot, written out as “Nikki Allen Poe” (note: his real name is Richard Tamaccio) he’s hoping to make a splash, but is not confident he can actually beat the Democratic machine candidate. For the time being, Poe’s doing all he can to get his name out there—which has resulted in a milestone for the campaign this day: He’s on the front cover of Metro.

That is exciting. But like any campaign, the job isn’t complete until Election Day. And those involved with his effort have been staking out cars in Center City with a ticket tucked under a front windshield wiper.

When finding one, they’d stick their own ticket of sorts next to it.

It’s a black-and-white print-out reading “Boot the PPA,” inviting those who’ve parked illegally to their Friday rally in front of the PPA’s office and court on Filbert Street in Center City. And there are stickers. They read: “If elected to City Council, Nikki Allen Poe will Abolish the PPA.” When I ask him about it, Poe takes a step back. “We’re not actually trying to shut down the PPA,” he says. “We know we can’t shut down the PPA; that’s not what we want. Accountability is all we want.”

The first step toward accountability: an audit of the parking authority, the end of certain so-called predatory practices and an assurance to the people of Philadelphia that they’ve got a regular guy—or, at least, as regular as Poe is—in their corner.

“It’s like, ‘Hey I’m an average guy. I’ve been affected by the system; obviously I’m a drug war victim,” he says, recounting his arrest during a Smokedown Prohibition rally last May. “I just want people to know there’s someone looking out for them, and I should be that person looking out for them, I guess.”

Average guy? That’s up for debate. Victim of the drug war? Perhaps.

A sign of what a few people (many of whom met at Occupy Philadelphia in 2011) in a large city can do when they put their heads together and attempt to illicit change from within? Most definitely.

Poe has created a name for himself and become something of a folk hero to a certain sect of the city through his leadership in the monthly Smokedown Prohibition protests, pro-marijuana gatherings which took place at Independence Mall once a month through 2013. At those events, which drew attention from all over the country, protesters would speak about the ills of the drug war, and, often, at 4:20pm, would smoke marijuana as a sign of disobedience.

The events, organized by the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws’ Philly chapter and comedy/activist troupe The Panic Hour (from which Poe has been barred, following his conviction for resisting arrest and possessing marijuana), received a ton of ink and pixels around the city and attracted mainstream politicians, like gubernatorial candidate John Hanger, who has since dropped out of the race but made marijuana reform the centerpiece of his campaign.

That’s something that never happened during Occupy.

Poe, for his part, actually considers Occupy Philly—and the Occupy movement as a whole—a failure. “I don’t like to lose, so I’ve tried to distance myself from it,” he says, mostly because of what the media at the time often, correctly, wrote of it: It was disorganized and often attracted a bad element, which helped standardize the narrative.

Not to mention what Poe considers the disingenuousness of many organizers.

“Look at the disenfranchised anarchist left,” he says. “They would probably buy a coffee at Starbucks before they’d throw a brick through the window, but they’re constantly not happy about anything. One thing about our activism: We know when to chalk up the ‘W.’” And one of those Ws: Marijuana reform. Smokedown Prohibition took place at a time in American history where some states began transitioning to legalizing it, and Americans as a whole are becoming tolerant of the plant, according to polls. Numerous politicians spoke

Every gubernatorial candidate in Pennsylvania—and many around the country—now favor marijuana reform. And there’s a charge to decriminalize pot in Philadelphia, which has been made possible by the hands-on work of activists like NORML’s Chris Goldstein, who, also arrested during Smokedown, is barred from crossing into Philadelphia from his home in New Jersey for marijuana-related activism.

“I’m not saying my work personally, or Smokedown Prohibition, led to that—but it was part of that,” Poe muses. “The other activists in this city who are never going to be happy about anything: If you want to be in this game, you need to take the small victories and see where they’re leading.”

But of the hundreds of fellow protesters who camped out at Dilworth Plaza for two months in 2011, he and others estimate there were about 60 to100 people who came out of that encampment ready to continue fighting for some of those same issues—to an extent.

Among those former Occupiers on the campaign: Joshua Scott Albert, the infamous creator and writer of StaphMeal, a gossip blog

about the Philadelphia restaurant industry, which earned him the descriptor “A Troll Too Far” on Gawker. Albert went to jail for eight months following a series of Facebook pages titled “Kill [Insert Public Figure’s Name]” and, out for a year, has been helping document Poe’s campaign with his camera.

“A couple people had questioned him working with me, and I said I’m going to stand by Joshua,” Poe says. “We’re both guys who have been through a lot of stuff, and everyone deserves a second chance. I see a lot of myself in Joshua. He’s younger than me, but we both sort of have that spirit.”

Poe met Albert at Occupy at a time when StaphMeal was still anonymous. Albert was outed after a lawsuit, then became more extreme in his blogging. He was the subject of numerous profiles in local and national media before, during and after his run-in with the law, which he maintained was a First Amendment issue.

Today, Albert says, he’s trying to refocus his life. “I’m just trying to take all that energy that I had with StaphMeal and use it for good,” he says, adding that of his work with Poe: “We cause trouble because we care.”

Other members of the campaign include Kenneth Lipp and Dustin Slaughter, who co-produce The Declaration, a muckraking news blog.

Lipp, Albert and Poe agree, is the brains of his operation and regularly provides the numbers and details behind some of Poe’s ideas.

Then there’s Vanessa Maria. The communications liaison behind Poe’s operation, she’s been working on activism on several fronts over the years, from marijuana reform to anti-fracking demonstrations.

This is all topped off with some people who actually weren’t at Occupy, but who fit the same Land of Misfit Toys storyline Poe and his crew are going for: Marc Brodzik at Scrapple TV, the previously PWprofiled producers of news videos at a studio in Northern Liberties who have helped create all of Poe’s promotional video material for the web. One of them, titled N.A. Poe Interviews N.A. Poe, actually features Poe, the average person interviewing Poe, the candidate.

This motley crew has helped create an election campaign for a non-politician who’s received less than $100 in total donations throughout the process. And, sure, he’s probably not going to win against the Johnny Doc-fueled candidacy of Ed Neilson, former political director of IBEW Local 98 (Poe is also running against Republican Matt Wolfe), but few other local politicians seem to be talking about the PPA and pot.

“The people that are being affected by [the PPA, the drug war] are the people of Philadelphia,” Poe says. “I want to be the inside man for these people if I’m elected. And if everyone votes for something, and I vote against it, at least I can walk out on the steps of City Hall and say, ‘Hey, people of people of Philadelphia, behind closed doors, everyone voted for this. I voted against it for you, and I want you to know they’re doing this.’ You know what I mean? That would be important.” / R.L.

Want pot on the ballot, like other states did it? Sorry.

At some point in the future, you may be asked on a statewide election ballot if Pennsylvania should legalize marijuana. Voting “yes” will feel good. And based upon polls that show a majority of residents now support recreational marijuana, such a vote would pass, just as it did in Colorado and Washington during the 2012 elections. In fact, just this spring, state Rep. Jake Wheatley, a Democrat and Desert Storm veteran from Pittsburgh, introduced House Bill 2137, which, he says, would “determine if it is the will of the electorate of this Commonwealth to urge the Pennsylvania General Assembly to legalize marijuana.” Excited? Don’t be. Even if Wheatley’s bill passed in the House (which it likely will not), passed in the Senate (which it definitely will not) or made it onto the November ballot (which, oh boy, no), it would have no immediate effect on your life.

Because, unlike Colorado, Washington and 21 other states around the country, Pennsylvania does not allow referendums. Our state law does not trust the people of Pennsylvania to make statewide policy decisions for ourselves.

We’re one of the many eastern states that do not allow referendums. (Most western states do.) We can, however, weigh in on constitutional amendments (remember those?), and residents regularly vote on local issues concerning things like debt and how to use public funds.

Even getting a local amendment on the ballot takes approval by the General Assembly, twice in two sessions, essentially making sure our state pols already approve of what the people of local cities and municipalities will be voting upon.

Wheatley’s bill would allow citizens to vote on a non-binding resolution—not binding legislation—which would signal to the legislature that yes, the people of Pennsylvania want this, so get the fuck on it. That could serve as a moral win over the prohibitionists who want marijuana to stay illegal, though that constituency is getting smaller every day. Advocacy groups like the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws have made this bill part of their greater cause over the last couple months. They’ve included a petition on their website, which Pennsylvanians can sign, then send to their representative in the state House. But for real: Don’t hold your breath. / R.L.

his is the time of year when I tend to crave the kind of bright, refreshing, complex white wines that I found myself elbow deep in at a tasting of some of the best of South Africa last week. The timing was perfect: Not only is this exactly the season to begin taking full advantage of the world-class Chenin Blancs and Chardonnays in particular that South Africa specializes in, but the wines of the country—which have been flowing ever since the 17th century— have never been better than they are right now. And yet, frustratingly, South African wines have historically been somewhat less familiar than their counterparts from other countries. This, I predict, is about to change in a very big way: Even here in Pennsylvania, it’s now possible to find an ever-growing selection of South African vintages.

At the retail level, look for standouts like Mulderbosch Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé, Botanica Skurfberg Chenin Blanc, Radford Dale “Renaissance” Chenin Blanc, Mullineaux Family Wines “White Chenin-based Blend,” Jardin “Barrel

Fermented” Chardonnay, and other Chardonnays from Crystallum, Neil Ellis Elgin and Hamilton Russell. You may not be able to find them all in Pennsylvania, but factor in New Jersey and Delaware and you’ll be in business.

Local restaurants are also taking advantage of all that South Africa has to offer. Tria is offering Cape Point Winery’s “Stonehaven” Sauvignon Blanc, and on May 19, winemaker and owner Duncan Savage will be teaching a class there. AA Badenhorst’’s “The Curator White” is available at both Zahav and the Oyster House. And more and more restaurants are adding South African wines to their lists all the time—make sure to seek them out.

The country also produces stunning reds. I can think of few wines I’d prefer with a grilled ribeye than Anwika’s Cabernet SauvignonSyrah blend or the Boekenhoutskloof Syrah.

y feelings for pork and its related products are both passionate and deeply felt.

The mere smell of sizzling bacon is enough to send me into convulsions of happiness, and a well-fried sausage or a perfectly sliced ham are all I need to swoon.

Which is why I’m a little concerned about attending as one of the judges of Cochon555 again this year: It is, simply put, among the greatest pig-o-centric events around, and I’m nervous about being in the presence of all that porky fun. I fear I’ll eat myself into oblivion.

At Avance, Chef Justin Bogle is essentially running an in situ course on how to bridge the gap between occasionally avant-garde technique and the sort of comfort that a great restaurant meal should provide. This was embodied in the cauliflower chawanmushi, a texturally perfect rendering of the Japanese custard, here studded with thumb-sized Nantucket bay scallops, their seared crowns looking like little umber-toned exclamation points set against the creamy expanse of dashi-rich egg custard. One bite highlighted those sweet scallops, a second the refreshing snap of pickled romanesco, another the crystalline pop of sake-cured trout roe, yet another the bright zip of meyer lemon zest confit. This stellar BYOB walks the tightrope between daring vision and impeccable technique with steadiness and confidence. Meltingly tender New Jersey scallops arrived hand-torn and tangled up in a transparent-green apple consommé studded with little islets of sea lettuce and translucent shards of celery throughout. Foie gras is bravely and brilliantly fixed up with cocoa in a silky-yet-hearty terrine. It arrives with a side plate of crisp Metropolitan Bakery brioche slices, and when that terrine is spread atop, and anointed with a dab of blood orange and then crowned with a mathematically precise brunoise of candied celery root, that earthy, smoky, sweetsouled bite throws all your preconceived fois gras assumptions into

Berkshire pork lavished in its triumvirate of treatments, and each one, from silky slices of belly to roasted loin to a crepinette of braised shoulder meat secreted inside a cocoon of crisped-up brioche enshrouded in caul fat, had me longing for it days later. For the kind of brunch that sticks to the proverbial ribs, and that offers nourishment for the belly as well as for the soul, Porto is just about perfect. Savor a crunchy fried chicken breast lavished with sweet-spicy maple jalapeño yogurt glaze, all of it sandwiched with bacon between the geometry of house-made cheddar waffles. It’s called the “Yo Cuz,” and no hangover is a match for its crave-able charms. The cheesesteak is rendered as the “Ultimate Sin,” a green piri-piri-streaked ribeye beneath a crown of St. George cheese and cosseted in a perfect Portuguese roll. Strawberry pancakes had just the right balance of fluffiness and chew. And a pork sandwich I took home for lunch was very nice: sweet and subtly smoky and exactly as moist as I’d hoped. The 24hour marinade and homemade barbecue sauce are notably good.

The food here walks the razor’s edge between heady comfort and unexpected exoticism. Octopus is poached with sake, fresno chile, ginger, lemongrass and more until it takes on the texture of a particularly meaty porcini mushroom, then gets hard seared and tossed with red pepper caramel: Magnificent. Homemade andouille showed up like a surprise every other forkful, borne alongside blackeyed peas of heft and delicacy. But it was the single fried chicken leg riding shotgun that stole the show: Skin this crisp and flesh this tender is something to cheer. Oysters were made new with a side cup of pomegranate mignonette, the fruit’s sweetness electrifying the briny bivalves. (B.F.) The kitchen here is subtly ambitious, crafting as much in-house as they can. The results are deliciously evident in the meat board, a canoe-sized wooden vessel bearing meltingly delicate foie gras torchon, sliced thin and elegantly perfumed from the Grand Marnier in its marinade; country pate all earthy with pork shoulder and chicken and pork livers, all of it wrapped in bacon; duck rillettes cleverly tossed with a parsley and pickled shallot salad; and nutmegand lavender-kissed Toulouse sausage, produced right here and seared to order. Pickled cauliflower and cabbage dot the plate, the better to cut through the heartiness of those excellent meats.

Red Kings 2, replete with private rooms and plenty of karaoke opportunities upstairs, is a phenomenal addition to Chinatown. The space is simple yet pleasant, service is exceptionally friendly, and the food challenges, inspires and, as that cabbage proved, rarely disappoints. Boiled sliced lamb in chili sauce was infinitely more than that humble description, a stunning mountain of earthy meat joined by petals of sweet onions, thick slices of nutty garlic and snappy broccoli florets. Dan dan noodles, also numbing but far from painful, sprinted across the tongue with each slurp. Steamed homemade dumplings swirled with a subtle hint of curry, lending them an all-too-unfamiliar perfume. Wonton soup benefited from a broth as hearty as it was pure. (B.F.)

Lord Whimsy Takes a Holiday Author Allen Crawford abandons his glamour-guy character for a powerful new illustrated vision of Whitman’s Song of Myself.

A

llen Crawford is quick to show off his automaton. It’s a clockwork bird in a cage and, when wound up, sounds and moves as if it was a living breathing creature. It’s the star of a parlor full of strange and wonderful curios, a Victrola, a cocktail kit, skulls of various sizes and species. Crawford dismisses most of this decor, pointing out which plants are artificial and which artwork was rescued from the trash, but the automaton is introduced with a certain amount of pride and affection. It may be a fake bird, but it is a real fake bird.

Crawford, whose new illustrated adaptation of a famed Walt Whitman poem, Whitman Illuminated: Song of Myself comes out this month, is very concerned with authenticity. He seems more restless in the parlor with its Victorian brica-brac. “It’s kind of ridiculous having a room like this,” Crawford admits, Style and Song: The sharp-dressed Allen Crawford discusses his latest book this week. Whitman spoke of connection to the human race, and Song of Myself, Crawford had his script to illuminate.

“I’m more of a William Carlos Williams guy,” Crawford says. Crawford’s illustrations mirror that desire. Rather than the mus“Wallace Stevens, John Berryman, that sort of thing. Godzilla He’s a monster so powerful that even a thousand remakes can’t hurt him. When Ishirō Honda’s haunting 1954 original hit USA theaters—two years later, bearing the excitable title Godzilla: King of the Monsters!—it was already a different beast, significantly shortened and recut with a Raymond Burr storyline to provide English-language commentary and a character with whom white Americans could identify. The iconic creature’s starred in two dozen adaptations since, morphing from unstoppable horror to scaly defender of the people, meaning modern interpretations can pretty much take their pick.

And Godzilla does, right from the opening credits, which tip the hat to atomic testing, government secrets and a familiar silhouette rising from the seabed. The plot intertwines several Godzilla tropes with varying success and suffers from an enthusiastic, breathless bloat that often swallows its cast; women in particular vanish. Director Gareth Edwards mimics the original in playing coy with the title monster—and mimics its Americanized forebear by shifting much of the action and heroism stateside. But for those with a high tolerance for action-movie bingo and CGI carnage, Godzilla’s reverence for the King of the Monsters oozes from every track mark, snapping cable and thundering footstep.

Because here, Godzilla’s most important character is the radioactive sea-dweller. The lumbering legend’s rendered in painstaking detail, from jagged spikes to melancholy mien. It’s a microcosm of the movie’s visual thoughtfulness; Edwards has a knack for the frame within the frame—rearview mirrors reflecting eerie abandoned streets, windows offering incomplete glimpses—to heighten both the atmosphere of dread and in-the-moment tension, so that the final standoff captures some real thrill. It might not be enough to clean up all the loose ends, but for monstermovie fans, Godzilla offers a loving look at the old guy back on the big screen. (Genevieve Valentine) REVIEW

God’s Pocket There’s a heavy weight that God’s Pocket carries unfairly even before it begins: It features one of the last performances of Philip Seymour Hoffman. Under such sorrowful auspices, what would otherwise be a footnote in a longer career acquires both a preemptive bittersweetness and the loaded hope of greatness, neither one of which the quietly disappointing God’s Pocket can really bear.

Hoffman himself is, of course, excellent. As Mickey Scarpato, an outsider in the dour Rust Belt enclave of God’s Pocket (where to be an outsider is a summary judgment), Hoffman effortlessly carries an understated, slightly adrift intensity punctuated by moments of pitch-black humor that suggests a much better movie than he’s occupying. And there are some small scenes that carry emotional weight, thanks to John Turturro, with whom he generates some long-fond chemistry, and Christina Hendricks, a solid actress who feels disconnected from the movie’s attempts at blue-collar verisimilitude yet still seems committed to the material. The material, however, is the problem. Adapted from Pete Dexter’s 1983 novel and centering on the small-stakes disasters that follow the death of Mickey’s worthless stepson (Caleb Landry Jones), there are occasional feints at sketching subplots, but they never move much beyond the run-down architecture. Interludes with local journalist Richard Shellburn (Richard Jenkins), living the particular life of those indie-movie men who land a series of younger women to illustrate the vagaries of life, don’t help.

John Slattery’s debut behind the camera is earnest but tonally unsure, vacillating between half-hearted noir and the first draft of a Coen brothers comedy, to the benefit of neither. Still, when the film’s following Hoffman, every facial expression and labored sigh tells a story. In the end, God’s Pocket stands as a testament to Hoffman’s ability to draw you in, no matter what. Oh Peace, Oh Light, Return The famous scaled creature is back in Godzilla, a reminder that this lonely movie monster will live forever.

odzilla wasn’t the first big-screen leviathan. Dinosaurs appeared in the mid 1920s, the first outsized icon was King Kong, and The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms pipped Godzilla to the post on the huge-sea-dinosaur angle by a year: it came out in 1953. (That film, at least obliquely, influenced director Ishirō Honda when the time came to salvage a failed project on a tight turnaround, and he pitched a monster movie.) But Godzilla recontextualized, quite literally, the nature of the beast.

So many movie monsters are echos of the unfathomable, lurking in shadowy depths to be awakened by a natural disaster or humanity’s hubris. When done well, they’re resonant and chilling (the long-unseen menace of Jaws’ great white shark). Done poorly, they’re comfortingly absurd. (The Deadly Mantis tried to capitalize on Godzilla’s appeal by applying the Huge Animal theorem and forgetting to actually make it good.) More often than not, they’re the beastly Other, come to punish us for crossing the scientific line, a city-storming consequence of exploration that’s inevitable but inherently unknowable.

Not Godzilla. Though he brought trilobites with him when he first stormed ashore, Godzilla was a thoroughly modern monster: woken by atomic bombs and drawing on their power, laying waste to a city still reeling from its wartime attacks. (The cinema aftermath of the Tokyo devastation drove some Japanese viewers out of the theaters.)

Godzilla was a wound still bleeding, an unstoppable weapon in an age that was becoming horrifyingly full of them.

We knew exactly who he was. That’s why he scared us.

But despite his glove-across-a-contrabass cry and teeth that can bring down a broadcast tower, there’s something sympathetic about Godzilla, in which he’s as much a victim of circumstance as the citizens he tramples. During a quiet moment, a childen’s choir sings a haunting plea—“Oh Peace, Oh Light, Return”—that could be sang by Godzilla as much as to him. His solitude is striking. The Frankenstein of

fossils, he’s the last of his kind, and waking him just makes him realize his loneliness. It’s probably much of the reason why, as the remakes stacked up, their storylines nudged Godzilla closer to being on our side. There were monsters everywhere, out to knock our cities down; surely the monster we loved most would fight for us if we needed him.

Some of those installments were terribly silly, of course— or just terrible. Long before you reach a sublime title like Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2, you hit Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster, in which our giant lizard must battle an oversized lobster, Mothra, and a handful of fighter jets. But even at his worst (ignoring Roland Emmerich), Godzilla maintains the appeal with which he first appeared out of the waves.

In the theater, the mention of his name’s enough to get applause. It’s a self-aware, collective fondness that stops just short of giving him a personality, while still pretending he comes back to save us because he likes us. (Godzilla: From atomic parable to the cinema world’s cranky foster cat.)

Practically since the 1956 Americanized Godzilla hit U.S. shores, the monster movie has been a well-worn genre of its own, complete with lurching silhouettes, brave soldiers whose guns do nothing, even braver scientists who risk everything to bring the reign of terror to an end, and a woman standing by to gaze upward and gasp at the oncoming horror. Without the metaphorical resonance of the 1954 original, for which ethical consequences were a constant preoccupation, they’re closer to comedy than horror.

And even without the Mechagodzilla back catalog, there’s admittedly something comforting about the old guy by now—a tie-in ad currently airing features Godzilla popping a Fiat into his mouth like a cocktail shrimp.

But even after twentysomething iterations, watching the original has the same sad thrill. As he crawls ashore, a lonely beast disrupted, the music swells with a melancholy later echoed in the hymn against him. Godzilla is the saddest monster, and for that, he lives forever. 

ere’s how Pablo Batista was bitten by the music bug: studying with percussion master Miguel Candia at the tender age of 9. The young Bethlehem, Pa., native began playing paid gigs when he was 12, and the complex arrangements of Afro-Caribbean music captured his imagination. Batista went on to graduate from Temple, teach Caribbean percussion at Philadelphia’s Artistas Y Musicos Latino Americanos (Latin American Musician Association), and, in 1991, win a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts to study folklore in Cuba. A more serious, protracted study of Afro-Cuban drumming and culture followed, and Batista traveled to Cuba to further research the percussive arts. From there, he’s gone on to perform and record alongside some of the most notable artists across a span of genres, including the late Grover Washington, Jr., Phyllis Hyman, Gerald Levert, Teddy Pendergrass, Eddie Palmieri, Bono Magic hands: Pablo Batista and his Mambo Syndicate play the Kimmel’s “Sittin’ In” on Thursday. and, most recently, Alicia Keys.

If Voting Is Speech, So Is Not Voting It’s a cherished American right we’ve paid for over hundreds of years.

And it’s OK not to do it.

N

our hand on the socioeconomic control levers. That’s why it’s important to grab and pull the actual, physical lever (okay, it’s a touch-screen button now) of the voting machine.

And yet that’s just one way we can express our speech.

We can send an equally important message by refusing to participate in this echo chamber of political consultants, both liberal and conservative, who seem to dress up their own nasty hatred of America in disingenuous praise of its values.

I get it. By not voting, I’m not putting my voice out there, which lots of political junkies will argue means I’m forfeiting my right to complain. But that’s really not the whole story.

By simply considering not voting, I’m sending a message that the system as it exists does not address my needs—or the needs of fellow queers or working-class people—no matter who it puts in charge.

We really need to start understanding that the system is stacked against us, and by opting out entirely, paradoxically, we might start to facilitate change.

We have a criminal justice system that disproportionately imprisons people of color. We have an economic system that disproportionately favors rich people in favor of poor people. We have a social system that disproportionately targets queer and HIV-positive people for crimes.

We really need to start understanding that the system is stacked against us, and by opting out entirely, paradoxically, we might start to facilitate change. Voting may represent the “healthy” exercise of American democracy, but as Jiddu Krishnamurti once said: “It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a sick society.”

People who find the system to be bullshit have every right to abstain or to write in their own protest vote. We don’t need to force ourselves to develop a taste for whatever mediocre appetizer the Democrats or Republicans may be serving up to get us salivating for the heavier shit smorgasbord they’re planning for November. Because as long as American society doesn’t give much of a shit about class minorities in general, this country’s in no position to pressure us to vote. All this electoral-obsessive disorder really does, in the end, is enable a bunch of rich white people to yell at each other, do nothing to serve the rest of us, and get paid to do it. 

ext Tuesday is the primary election here in Pennsylvania. Even if you haven’t yet read Randy LoBasso’s coverage in this issue (see page 12) on the petting zoo of human nastiness that comprises our local political process, you’ve inevitably seen some of the stultifying, oversimplified argle-bargle that’s filled the candidates’ TV ads. If you’ve managed to avoid all of it, congratulations: You are plugged into the secret of eternal happiness, and you not only deserve a medal, you should immediately write a bestselling self-help book to enlighten the rest of us.

Presuming you have caught wind of all the electoral flatulence, I’d like to tell you something: You don’t have to vote.

More specifically, it’s OK to abstain, or to cast protest or write-in votes, to express your mind.

I know, I know. We’re supposed to be good, upstanding citizens and respect the Constitution and the sacrifices of past and current generations. My father is probably wincing as he reads this; after all, he fought for his country in a war. And while he considers the Vietnam War to have been pointless, he still insists that the right to vote, liberal democratic enfranchisement, is something too precious, too hardfought to not exercise at every opportunity. And, you know, I agree—to a point.

I used to obsess over politics. As a teenager, I watched Crossfire on CNN. When Al Gore had the presidency stolen from him, I literally cried. I didn’t get to add my vote to the constitutional crisis of 2000, though—I wasn’t 18 yet. That came in 2002, when I proudly cast my very first vote for former Philadelphia mayor Ed Rendell for governor. In fact, I wrote to my hometown newspaper about how it was my first time voting, and they published the letter; it’s still clipped to my parents’ fridge. I worked on the Rendell for Governor campaign, and those days were some of the happiest in my entire life.

So I’m not some crazy anarchist or communist or flag burner here. (While all these groups are technically OK, they’re also ridiculous, in that they have disdain for the system that grants them the freedoms to hold disdain for the system.) I’m not anti-American—I’m a good old-fashioned American liberal.

Which is exactly why I’m thinking of not voting next Tuesday.

The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution grants us the freedom to exercise our speech. We are allowed to do this a variety of ways: through protests, votes, press and, literally, speeches (so long as we don’t run afoul of commonsense safety and peace ordinances).

In the Internet Age, we Americans enjoy expressions of speech on Twitter, Facebook and blogs, too. We had an Occupy Philly movement whose participants used protests to express their displeasure with a system that’s stacked against the interests of class minorities. And today, basically everyone who isn’t L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling is a class minority. That means we hold a tremendous amount of untapped power in our sheer numbers; the only thing we don’t have is

I’m a 21-year-old straight male, and I’m mildly autistic. This means that I have difficulty picking up on social cues. I’ve learned to manage my disability in most areas of my life, but I’ve recently become concerned about how it pertains to hooking up. My approach to hooking up is how I imagine most other people’s must be: find someone who I can have a flowing conversation with, attempt to flirt with them and then awkwardly make a move. But a few weeks ago at a party, I was flirting with a girl when I suddenly realized that she was wasted. I had suspected that she was tipsy like myself, but I didn’t understand how far gone she was until she invited me outside and was unable to keep her balance while walking. What followed was a horrifyingly surreal exchange where I struggled to leave, she kept insisting that she wasn’t drunk, and all the while she kept pressing against me.

By the time I got away, she was angry, people were staring, and I had history’s most shameful erection. Prior to that night, I thought I could tell when someone was too drunk. Now I have doubts about myself. Severe intoxication renders a person incapable of giving consent, and taking advantage of someone that impaired is the same as rape in my mind. Am I a rapist? Was it wrong for me to participate in hookup culture as I struggle to read social signals?

Moral Blue Screen Of Death If your description of events is accurate, that shameful erection of yours—which was nowhere close to being history’s most shameful erection (that distinction belongs to the erections on the Catholic priest who raped the most kids)—was an innocent, unconscious, physiological response to some awkward and clearly unwelcome bodily contact. Just because your dick got hard doesn’t mean you were enjoying yourself. Again, if your recap is accurate: You were struggling to leave, and this drunk wouldn’t stop pressing her body against yours? You were the victim, not the perp.

As for other women you’ve hooked up with at or after parties ...

The line between buzzed enough to go for it and too drunk to consent can be fuzzy and subjective. Some people argue that one drink renders a person incapable of consenting to sex. By that standard, nearly all of us are guilty of raping scores of people. But sensible people recognize that alcohol functions as a social lubricant and an effective way to overcome social or sexual inhibitions, and that it’s possible for two people (or more!) to have consensual sex after a drink or two or even three.

You say you have difficulty picking up on social cues, and you’re now worried that you may have misread a previous hookup’s ability to consent. I’m sorry to say that it’s possible you hooked up with a girl who was completely shitfaced but, unlike that drunk girl at the party, was not giving off tooshitfaced-to-consent cues that you could pick up on. Since you can’t go back in time and unfuck all the buzzed/tipsy/drunk girls with whom you’ve already hooked up, MBSOD, you can only resolve to be more cautious going forward.

If drunkenness is one of those social cues that you have a hard time reading, you’re going to ask a friend for his or her read on the girl you met, or— better still—you’re going to stick to dance-floor make-out sessions at parties and reserve getting naked for sober/soberer second or third dates. And when you do decide to really go for it, you’re go-

ing to err on the side of making active, ongoing, explicit requests for consent, i.e., you’re not going to “make moves,” awkward or otherwise, you’re going to ask questions (“I’d really like to kiss you—that OK?”) and keep asking questions (“OK, I got the condoms out—you still wanna fuck?”).

My best friend is in a relationship with a great guy who is a loving father to their kids. There are no issues in their relationship other than this: zero sex in 10-plus years. She is DESPERATE. She is in contact with a former lover who is not the LTR type. She wants to hook up with her ex. Is she required to disclose? If so, what do you recommend she say? Or does 10-plus years of sexlessness constitute a free pass?
