In response to Sean Burns’ review of Silver Linings Playbook: I don’t think you were hard enough [on this movie]. I’m not sure how [people] could have experienced mental illness in their lives, and watch a two-hour comedy about mental illness. [Bradley] Cooper for me was spot on, but that just made me upset. I sat in an audience who were laughing at his illness. Were they really laughing at this guy as his inner world in turmoil flickers as social quirks on the surface? Was I really supposed to laugh? Did they really make this a comedy? Am I really supposed to relax ‘cause its a movie? I lost faith in humanity sitting in that theater.

In response to Nicole Finkboner’s review of Judy Gelles’ “I Want to Grow Up Fast” exhibit at Pentimenti Gallery: Heart-breakingly provocative and important. My wish would be for Arne Duncan, Congress and President Obama to spend a couple of hours walking from photo to photo—child to child—and then sit to watch and listen to the video production.

Judy Gelles shows again that we have work to do to close the terrible gap between the rich and the poor, and that the neediest may be our own inner-city children.

Jersey Justice

In reponse to Tara Murtha’s blog about noted local survivalist Fernando Antonio Salguero’s arrest in New Jersey on weapons charges: Word on the street is that the “rocket-

propelled flares” were mere road flares that people use when their vehicles break down, and that the “tear gas” was simply pepper spray. Who’s to say whether the police or Fernando are to be believed at this point. Perhaps, as is typically the case, the truth lies somewhere in between.

But I’ll tell you one thing: This is New Jersey we’re talking about, so it’s entirely possible that these so-called “illegal” weapons were nothing more than road flares and pepper spray. That state is highly legislated, and oftentimes things considered to be “weapons” in N.J. are perfectly legal to possess in many, many other states. Still, we should all reserve judgment on this story until more of the facts come out.

Dancers explore themes of race and gender in Body Against Body at the Painted Bride.

What’s happening — before it happens ...

TH E BIG ONE

Body Against Body Over the past 30 years, as choreographers have continued to test the boundaries of modern dance, creating works more riveting and cutting-edge than those before them, the beautifully intricate duets of Bill T. Jones and his late partner and collaborator Arnie Zane have truly managed to stand the test of time.

Though Jones has earned numerous accolades and awards throughout his career, creating over 140 works for the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, he is perhaps best known by many for having directed and choreographed the 2010 Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Fela!

Not a rerun, but rather a piece of living dance history, Body Against Body now revisits several of the company’s groundbreaking works such as Blauvelt Mountain (1980) and Monkey Run Road (1979), which redefined modern dance in the early ‘80s and continue to be regarded as significant examples of postmodern aesthetic.

More importantly, they are likely to excite and inspire audiences in 2013 with the same intensity as they did some three decades ago. All of the featured pieces address themes of race, gender and sexual orientation in small-scale duets—even sometimes in the nude—while integrating the same conflicting themes and contrasting physical styles that have defined the company’s history.

To further illuminate the social themes presented in Body Against Body, the Painted Bride will host audience engagement events throughout its three-night run, including a movement workshop for those with or without any formal dance training on Friday and a pre-show Q&A with Jones himself on Saturday. Immediately following Thursday’s performance, the audience will have a chance to engage with the company’s associate director Janet Wong and dance scholar/cultural historian Brenda Dixon Gottschild. Meanwhile, through a three-channel video installation, the public is invited to trace the evolution of Blauvelt Mountain as it has been brought to life over the years by diverse pairings of dancers. Whether relating to this dance or simply dance as a whole, participants are encouraged to share their reactions, as their responses will be compiled into sideshow and presented prior to each of the nightly performances. / NICOLE FINKBINER Thurs.-Sat., Feb 21-23, 8pm. $25-$30. The Justice Conference Beginning at 9am, a host of renowned speakers and activists from 44 states and over a dozen nations will descend upon the Pennsylvania Convention Center for the Justice Conference, founded three years ago by Ken Wytsma, president of Kilns College, in association with World Relief, a development nonprofit operating in 20 countries. A gathering designed to encourage dialogue and action around issues of social justice—like poverty, HIV/AIDS, human trafficking and human rights—think of it as an unpretentious TED talk on subjects that have actual meaning and value. But with events resided over by several nationally-known social entrepreneurs, artists, scholars and authors—including Mission Year president Leroy Barber and philosopher Dr. Nicholas Wolterstorff—the Justice Conference’s real local resonance comes via its inaugural film festival’s screening and Philadelphia premiere of 3801 Lancaster, a new documentary on the case of abortion doctor-accused murderer Kermit Gosnell, of which PW’s Tara Murtha writes this week in our Philly Now blog, “The filmmakers seem to align themselves with the poor, mostly minority female victims of Gosnell’s clinic, [but] in reality, they are more closely aligned with the right-wing legislators in Harrisburg.” It’s among the 16 short- and long-form docs and narrative films exploring a wide swatch of stories aimed at informing, engaging—and frankly, outraging—the Justice Conference’s politically progressive attendees. / R.L.

It’s a frightening prospect, writing about Jay Dee, aka J Dilla, aka James DeWitt Yancey. He’s a legend, and he’s gone. To say that he’s one of the most influential figures in hip-hop history is an understatement. He’s touched nearly every legendary record of the mid-’90s and early 2000s, and basically did it all without even desiring credit for his work. As a producer, he wanted to be like Pete Rock (and ended up working with him later in his life, too). Well, he ended up being in Pete’s elite company, both creative fathers of thoughtful hip-hop. His production credits aside, Jay also blew people’s minds as a part of Slum Village, a humble threesome of friends who became tight in high school in Detroit who loved to battle rap. They were pegged as the next A Tribe Called Quest a little too quickly for Jay’s liking; while Tribe’s following had a phrase to use to describe it—“backpack rap”—Dilla said he didn’t wear no backpack. Born to musical parents, an opera singer mother and a jazz bassist father, his mom claimed he had an impeccable ear for harmony and syncopation at two-months-old. And as he started ceaselessly collecting vinyl and spinning records whenever he could, he became obsessed. Unfortunately, in 2006, at the ripe age of 32, Jay Dee succumbed after years of illness. He suffered from thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, a rare blood disease, and seemingly lupus as well. He’d started to lose weight and perform in a wheelchair as his health dwindled. Well, this night should be a unique and exciting way to channel his monstrous musicality and celebrate his outstanding catalogue. DJs Questlove, Rich Medina and Mike Nyce will spin some of Jay’s best, which means sophisticated breakbeats, refreshing percussion runs and danceable jazz. Zero Dark Thirty star and Best Actress nominee Jessica Chastain

ODDS on the OSCARS The Oscars are bullshit. They are a sham. They are middlebrow.

They are self-congratulatory. They are onanistic. They are considerably less watched than the Super Bowl because Hollywood hates America. They are a glorified fashion show. They crowned Forrest Gump. ¶ There are a plethora of reasons to hate on the Oscars, some of them even legitimate. And yet here’s one reason to care: 2012 was a great year for movies.

I myself am an unapologetic snob, and inevitably my picks for the year’s best do not jibe with what the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences considers the best. But there was so much goodness to go around that I can get down with their choices.

What follows is a combination of my picks for what may win, which you can borrow— trust me, I win Oscar pools—what I think

should win and what would have won if this was a perfect world. Meaning, if it conformed to my tastes.

Best Documentary What may win: Traditionally, this category tends to favor subject over form. There are two docs critical of Israel (The Gatekeepers

and 5 Broken Cameras), which will likely cancel each other out. That leaves muckraker Kirby Dick’s The Invisible War (on rape in the military) and How to Survive a Plague (on the history of ACT UP). A rare feel-good entry (Searching for Sugar Man) may be the dark horse, but let’s guess they’ll go with Plague.

What should win: Plague, not because its subject is the best or some nonsense, but

because it’s a formally adventurous nonfiction that benefits greatly from an overabundance of archival footage. Consumer grade cameras were new during the advent of the AIDS crisis, and the throngs who protested, loudly and aggressively, to get the world working on a cure is bottled up by the near wall-to-wall use of real, blistering images. >>>

What should have won overall: If one would consider This is Not a Film, by Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, under house arrest, a doc, then it should have won. But it’s not a doc; it’s a film, title be damned. Instead, get irritated that The Imposter—a sneaky, Errol Morris-y study of collective self-deception writ large—got the shaft.

What may win: Tony Kushner, Lincoln. This seems obvious, although never underestimate Silver Linings Playbook fever.

What should win: People—detractors, but his fanbase, too—tend to overemphasize the look of Wes Anderson’s films, to the extent that they forget the films originate on the page. (Probably inside a typewriter.)

Moonrise Kingdom is his most beautiful, if not best, film yet, and the beauty extends to the script Anderson wrote with Roman Coppola.

What should have won overall: David Cronenberg’s script for Cosmopolis makes great a so-so Don DeLillo novel, although its real power emerged when the actors came to speak their lines. Who knew Robert Pattinson was put on earth to deliver overlystylized DeLillo dialogue?

What should win: Zero Dark Thirty, but because it’s uncompromisingly unconventional. Like All the President’s Men and Zodiac, this is a warts-and-all portrayal of the process of detective work: the false leads, the dead ends, the untold hours spent poring over information while drinking bad coffee. Boal was working on it before Osama bin Laden’s assassination, but while he was forced to include narrative closure, very little else remains closed. Instead of fist-pumpingly victorious, the ending stays ambivalent, asking still more questions: Was this about making the world safe or was it more about vengeance? Was it worth it?

Boal’s script uses the language of action films—including Chastain’s increasingly shouty snoop—to comment on what we expect from thrillers, and more importantly, to question whether killing bin Laden was a good idea.

What should have won overall: For whatever reason, animation isn’t often thought of written as words typed into a word processor program. And yet Don Hertzfeldt’s It’s Such a Beautiful Day, depicting a stick figure’s looming death, would have been great even if its stars had been flesh and blood.

What may win: The line is that the (almost entirely misdirected) controversy over Zero Dark Thirty’s depiction of torture led Academy voters to punish director Kathryn Bigelow, who was snubbed a locked-in nomination. Ironically, they feted screenwriter Mark Boal, who was responsible for putting it in there. It will probably win, too, if only for the intense gruntwork of collaps-

Who may win: The Oscars—and the Oscars watchers—love a comeback story, and they may fall for Robert De Niro’s return, in Silver Linings Playbook, to giving a shit about the movies he’s in. (At least of those anyone’s paying attention to: Of late, he’s been rather good or even superb in Stone, Stardust, Killer Elite and Being Flynn.) But they’ll probably give it to Tommy Lee Jones in Lincoln, ‘cause

who doesn’t enjoy watching Tommy Lee Jones shout epithets at racists while wearing a funny wig?

Who should win: Philip Seymour Hoffman’s L. Ron Hubbard-esque cult leader in The Master is a man at war with himself, convinced of his own bullshit, but tempted by the ways of the flesh. And household products-as-booze.

Who should have won overall: No one saw the movie, so no one knows that the most enjoyable performance of the year was Michael Shannon in Premium Rush, playing the cartoonish baddie with a chuckle unheard outside of a Looney Tunes short.

Best Supporting Actress Who may win: Anne Hathaway, Les Miserables. You heard it here first!

Who should win: Not Anne Hathaway, who was good but wasn’t even the best one-song supporting player in Les Mis. (As ever, poor Éponine.) Amy Adams, however, is a motherfucker in The Master. Using the energy she often reserves for good, but this time for bad, she owns the intense killjoy whose belief in her husband’s bullshit is stronger than his own.

Who should have won overall: Cécille de France kills it in the Dardennes’ The Kid With a Bike, playing an impromptu caretaker whose cold demeanor masks a bottomless selflessness.

Best Actor Who may win: Is the star of Midnight Meat Train really about to become an Oscar winner? Daniel Day-Lewis does more than impersonate Lincoln, but it’s still an impersonation. Denzel Washington is a good alkie, but it’s still an alkie role. Hugh Jackman

struggles to sing with Tom Hooper’s camera pressed into his nose. And The Master seems to be punished for being difficult, so sorry, Joaquin Phoenix. Not that BCoop won’t deserve it: He’s movie-crazy without being show-offy, and he always keeps his character grounded by his sense of humor.

Who should win: Phoenix. This is a fullbodied performance, in that Phoenix reimagines how the human anatomy works from the ground up, even if that means delivering half his dialogue out of the corner of his mouth à la Popeye. Watching Hoffman’s charlatan try, and fail, to tame this wild beast was a direct pleasure in a movie otherwise stubbornly ambiguous.

Who should have won overall: As much as I want to say Denis Lavant, for his literally shape-shifting work in Holy Motors, no performance was as exciting as Tim Heidecker’s raging wealthy dickhead routine in The Comedy. And I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Robert Pattinson wuz robbed—for Cosmopolis, not Breaking Dawn 2.

Best Actress Who may win: Oh, you know: Jessica Chastain or Jennifer Lawrence. Flip a coin.

Who should win: It depends which you prefer: internalized to the point of inhumanity or forthright to the point of inhumanity.

Chastain’s agent in Zero Dark Thirty is so inside herself that she’s not even likable once she starts telling off superiors. That’s a compliment, and another sign at how the film toys with audience expectations. Meanwhile, Lawrence takes a dreaded character type— the Manic Pixie Dream Girl—and makes her a flesh-and-blood person, capable of the full spectrum of emotions. So, flip a coin.

Who should have won overall: Neither is as

Finally, here’s what may and should win, respectively, in the rest of the categories: Best Foreign Language Film: Amour/No Best Animated Feature: Brave/The Pirates!

Band of Misfits Best Doc (Short): I’ve no idea, sorry. Redemption sounds like a good bet.

Who may win: A talented but troubled auteur—who became an Internet celebrity once his outbursts on the I Heart Huckabees set went viral— cleans up his act and writes and directs a populist, but edgy, product.

David O. Russell will probably win for Silver Linings Playbook, and that’s nice in that Russell is extremely talented and the best director of all time when it comes to scenes of mass character chaos. And if he wins, we might get to see Nailed, the movie he made before The Fighter and which still lives in legal catastrofuck limbo.

Who should win: Ang Lee directed the shit out of Life of Pi. There were a lot of problems with the film, but as long as it’s a dude, a boat and a dwindling number of animals, it’s an example of someone using not only technology but “camera” “placement” to tell a story visually.

Who should have won overall: Again, Don Hertzfeldt for It’s Such a Beautiful Day. As with screenwriting, animation is rarely perceived as “directed.” But Hertzfeldt came up with some of the most unique and exciting ways to explore his grim storyline, all without using technology older than about 1940.

Silver Linings Playbook is, if not a film I like, one I feel has taken enough of a beating amongst my peers and elsewhere. Tell your crew to be easy on it.

What should win: Zero Dark Thirty. Because I love torture.

What should have won overall: It’s Such a Beautiful Day. Perhaps one day you all will get a chance to see it.

ven though, as Matt says on page 13, the Oscars are pretty much bullshit, there’s a lot to be said about the power of the win. And the nomination. For those of us in the all-encompassing LGBTQA category, 2013’s not a very good year. Try to deny the power of Brokeback Mountain and its ensuing acclaim, nominations and wins (not an Oscar, but SAGs and Golden Globes): The massive success of Ang Lee’s 2005 interpretation of Annie Proulx’ short story elevated the queer-themed film to the level of widespread critical success, but also normalized queerness a little bit. In the last 10 years, a small handful of nominated actors have taken home the statue for playing gay, with another slew being nominated. When a straight actor signs on to a film in which he or she will play a homosexual, then knocks it out of the park and stands by his or her performance, it also sends a message to millions of people sitting in those theater seats: Queer stuff isn’t weird.

This year, there are pretty much zero LGBT nominations for the big ones, both in terms of content and the people responsible for the film. Last year was a different story: Out filmmaker Tate Taylor’s The Help got a nod for Best Picture; in the Best Actress category, Rooney Mara played bi in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, while Glenn Close shone as a woman dedicated to her role as a male waiter in Alfred Nobbs; and Beginners star Christopher Plummer won Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of a father coming out to his son at 75. In 2009 and 2010, respectively, Milk and The Kids Are All Right made huge waves for their gay content, earning nominations for Best Film and for the strong performances by Sean Penn, Annette Bening and Julianne Moore.

There are essentially three nominations that LGBT people and allies can root for on Sunday night: Tony Kushner’s Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for Lincoln, How To Survive a Plague for Best Documentary, and ParaNorman, for Best Animated Feature, which quietly features an out jock. Let’s pull these apart real quick. There’s nothing gay about Lincoln, minus Kushner—one of our most cherished living LGBT writers and whose Angels in America mini-series was astonishingly powerful for its portrayal of gay life and exploration of AIDS. Directed and co-written by David France, How To Survive is a deeply moving documentary about the early years of AIDS, its devastation and impact on the LGBT community and the nascent years of ACT UP. Let me tell you, if you

haven’t seen it, watch it on Netflix, but not unless you’re ready to weep. It is viciously emotional and absolutely a story that must be told (and heard). Finally, the charming ParaNorman will undoubtedly struggle to beat its competition, (Brave and Wreck-It Ralph, to be sure) but should be applauded for matter-of-factly placing in its cast a big, lovable jock with a boyfriend. But that’s it.

That’s all we’ve got in 2013.

The troubling part? It’s a struggle to come up with films and actors that should have been nominated. Two films come to mind: Pariah, which technically may or may not fall into consideration due to its late, late 2011 release, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Pariah was the Dee Rees-directed, Spike Lee-produced story of a 17-year-old girl in Brooklyn struggling to come out in a strict, straight-laced home. The film’s star, Adepero Oduye, gave a commanding performance as Alike, and Kim Wayans was a stunner as Alike’s mother. It got zero nominations from the Academy. And Ezra Miller’s outstanding performance as Patrick in Perks, the film based on Stephen Chbosky’s iconic novel and directed by the author himself, was made doubly powerful by the actor’s quiet real-life coming out.

What’s weird about the dearth of Oscar nominations and, in the same breath, LGBT-themed films, in 2013 is that the last 18 months have seen countless queer struggles overcome and gay rights advocates’ soaring success stories. With DADT repealed, Obama’s re-election and subsequent outspoken support for gay marriage, and same-sex marriage approved in New York, Maine, Maryland and Washington, it’s something everyone is talking about. Where are the films that celebrate these stories?

Is it because they’ll show up in 2014, or because Hollywood doesn’t want to spend money on getting them made? Maybe a bit of both. But on Oscar night this weekend, we’re pulling for Tony Kushner, David France and ParaNorman’s Mitch. n

hopped liver is to Jewish grandmothers as Sunday gravy is to their Italian counterparts. But while that simmering, sputtering vessel of blood-red tomato sauce has been memorialized, fetishized and obsessedover by chefs both amateur and professional, humble chopped chicken liver hasn’t generally benefited from that sort of thought.

The reimagining of it at Citron and Rose, though? This shifts the paradigm.

Silky orbs of grilled-then-pureed liver glistened in their sour-cherry gelee, the enrobing layer like some kind of couture for offal. These were impaled on toothpicks and set atop a soil-looking mass of cocoa nibs and pumpernickel bread crumbs, lightly pickled baby carrots and raw turnips and radishes scattered throughout. It looks like some kind of beautiful diorama of a farm, and finally makes clear the potential for the grandmotherly classic to be a star outside of the quintessentially matzoh-ballsmelling kitchen.

The chickens that gave their lives for this dish did not die in vain, nor did they for the more classic preparation of rotisserie-roasted breasts and thighs.

Whole birds were marinated in honey, paprika, lemon juice and more, allowed to dry for several days (almost Pekingduck style), and then roasted on the spits rotating behind the chefs in the open kitchen by the bar. A breast and thigh, as well as their accompanying potatoes, were finished in a pan with schmaltz, or rendered chicken fat, and arrive glazed an evocative shade of red-brown.

The magic here is about working within strict guidelines and perfecting what you can do. Citron and Rose, after all, is kosher, which means that, in order to avoid any possibility of meats coming into contact with dairy, the latter is cut out of the equation entirely.

What’s so bracingly exciting about the work that executive chef Michael Solomonov and chef de cuisine Yehuda Sichel are doing is that it’s the clearly defined limitations they have to work within that have led to the explosive flavors they’re creating.

This Main Line restaurant uses the traditional Jewish foods of Europe as inspiration, but never finds itself mired in accepted cooking wisdom simply for tradition’s sake. The flavors are familiar,

but often recast as something more elegant than they typically achieve in this country. (That liver dish, Sichel later told me, was inspired by one at a kosher restaurant in Paris. The team at Citron and Rose hopes to usher in a new era of exploring these foods like any other regional or ethnic cuisine; they’re really trying to change “the way that people really look at kosher food.”)

House-blended pastrami spice is used to brilliant ends, both in a velvety salmon crudo accompanied by orange supremes and beets, all beneath a snow-flurry of microplaned horseradish, and luscious beef tartare vibrating with pickled green tomatoes and celery. Accompanying bone marrow croquettes were a thoughtful, addictive addition.

All this is accompanied by a wine program that, though the offerings are mevushal—pasteurized, essentially—is food-friendly and thoughtful. A California Chenin Blanc, mouthwatering and kissed with ripe fruit, was perfect with the schnitzel, especially forkfuls loaded with the remarkable puree of apple and celery root.

Cocktails, like the food, embody a sense of joy in the exploration of flavor and spice, and occasionally with a wink.

The spicy Magyar Daisy gets its heat from tequila infused with pepper, and a whiff of smoke from rinsing the glass with Laphroig. The hilariously named “Reb Roy” is defined by a sophisticated, almost Port-like sweetness obtained by aging Manischewitz, that notoriously sweet mule-kick of a wine, in little bar-

rels. If only I’d had the option of drinking something like that at my bar mitzvah all those years ago . . .

Desserts, perhaps a hair less ambitious than what precedes them, are nonetheless well-wrought updates on classics. Chocolate hazelnut blintzes are essentially rolled-up Nutella crepes; the accompanying scoop of sour-cherry ice cream lent it a sense of brightness. And babka demonstrated just how complex a spice good cinnamon can be as opposed to the slowly dying canisters of powder most of us keep in the pantry.

Kosher food, perhaps more than any other in this country, is deeply misunderstood. Citron and Rose, however, is fantastic food regardless of classification. Jewish grandmothers should start getting ready: Their star turn may be just around the corner. ■

Be My Little Baby After months of learning lunch and dinner skills, Nicole wants some damn ice cream.

rue story: I probably wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for Mister Softee. I’m not going to elaborate on that at this time, because I think even first-person columnists deserve a little mystery, but now that I have your attention, allow me to say that Little Baby’s Ice Cream is the best thing to happen to sweets in this town since Tastykakes.

So, craving some dessert smarts after all these healthy meals I’ve been trying, I turned to Little Baby’s cofounder and production manager, Martin Brown, in search of some cold, creamy, homemade relief. Not surprising given their array of unique flavors, our final creation(s) was anything bland: bourbon vanilla ice cream covered in three types of “crazy sizurp” and two different “forked-up baby bananas” on the side.

Presumably unaware that I was already a big fan of his work, upon arriving at Little Baby’s wonderfully wacky “world headquarters” in East Kensington, Martin had me sample several of their flavors while I pretended as though they were new to me. Best. Breakfast. Ever.

Although Martin now uses a $25,000 machine to make Philadelphia-style ice cream (egg-free, custard based), he opted to show me the recipe for the French style he first started making at home with his handy-dandy two quart Cuisinart ice cream machine. A similar one will run about $40-$60, but if you already own a stand mixer, likely all you need is a separate attachment. Either way, it’s worth the investment when you consider the cost of ice cream. Even better: You can finally have the ice cream of your wildest dreams!

When devising your own flavorings, Martin stresses that you need to be mindful of how certain additives are going to affect the freezing process. For example, sugars and alcohol deter freezing, so the more you add, the softer your ice cream is going to be. Meanwhile, acids and watery fruits should be handled delicately and in small amounts. Some specific ingredients he recommends experimenting with: coffee, tea, grape nuts, cinnamon, peanut butter, nutmeg, cardamom and berries.

If you’re thinking a machine is going to speed up the process, though, think again. After you’ve boiled your custard base, the batch needs to cool in the fridge for two to three hours or, more ideally, overnight. Once ready to be whipped, that’s about another 20 minutes, plus however long you might need to prepare/mix your desired flavoring/toppings. Finally, unless you want soft serve, the ice cream needs to sit in your freezer for 24 hours to achieve the ideal consistency.

In other words, you’re looking at a 48-hour project, which is about 47 and a half hours longer than I’d normally spend preparing any dish of any kind. I told Martin that while I didn’t bring a tent, I’d be more than happy to camp out overnight in the shop, but he assured me that wasn’t necessary. Dammit!

(Can’t blame a gal for trying.)

Waiting for the ice cream to do its thing, we had plenty of time to craft our exotic toppings. First, having randomly picked up a bushel of baby bananas at an Asian supermarket that morning, Martin searched the store for things to cover them in and returned with coconut sugar and a handful of Lemonheads. It turns out, when you bake a baby banana covered in crushed Lemonheads, you get a mushier version of a Lemonhead and when you bake them in coconut sugar, you wind up with a mini plantain. Go figure.

With the baby banana mystery now solved, we moved on to our different syrup mixtures: chocolate and pomegranate molasses; honey and lime juice; cayenne power and chocolate. My personal favorite was the heavenly blend of honey and lemon juice. I didn’t, however, share Martin’s appreciation for the tart kick of the pomegranate molasses, which we accidently microwaved with the chocolate, thus creating more of a candy coating than a syrup. As for our bourbon vanilla ice cream, it was like buttah. Probably could have used more bourbon, though.

I’m not sure whether it was Martin’s adorable smile or the copious amounts of ice cream and “crazy sizurp” that he fed me, but I left the shop feeling like a giddy schoolgirl. Giddy enough, in fact, to start pondering the possible side effects of eating that much Little Baby’s ice cream. What if instead of black spots, you start seeing neon squiggly lines? Or instead of a ringing in your ears, you hear “Pop Goes The Weasel?”

Most frightening of all, what if you start having night terrors involving Malcolm, the androgynous ice cream creature from their promotional videos?

A recent menu started with a single deep-cupped oyster—the magnificently named Shoregasm— anointed with a spiced apple granita. It worked as an hors d’oeuvre, a warm-up lap and a palatecleanser all at once and was swiftly followed by house-cured salmon. Three velvety slices, subtle with the aromas of soft herbs like mint, basil, dill and cilantro, were each wrapped around a spray of pea shoots exploding from their ends like cartoon contrails on an animated comet. The accompanying horseradish crema was a nice traditional touch, if not a terribly necessary one. Tender duck prosciutto with red-wine-cooked pears tasted of dark spices and game. Oxtail luxuriated in a pearl-onion agrodolce dotted with roasted cloves of garlic and a magnificent homemade demi-glace. The aptly named “three little pigs” may cause quivers of joy among a certain segment of the city’s more pigpassionate foodies, the rail of meaty pork belly given snap from a scattering of crispy pig ears like beautiful non-kosher Fritos, and even further decadence from the puck of fried diced trotter, all that gorgeous, funky richness cooked down into something that melted on the tongue like swinebutter. Attention to the minute differences in flavor and texture are what lift many of the dishes here above the fray. The generous green dumplings arrived still sizzling from their stint in the oil, a lacy, intricate carapace of wafer-thin happiness clinging to their sides. Inside was a joyous gathering of water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, leeks and shiitakes, all of it homemade, all of it infinitely better than the majority of what you’ll taste elsewhere. Ped yang was anchored by sliced barbecued duck with skin so crispy, it reminded me of some kind of perfect hybrid between Peking duck and fried chicken. The meat itself played well off its ginger sauce, and the portion size was more than generous. Kang-dang red curry found the happy intersection of creaminess from coconut milk and perfectly dialed-in spice from the curry paste. The result was a dish that kept evolving throughout each individual bite, the first impression lush and almost fruity, then building to a pleasant sizzle that never overwhelmed. (B.F.)

The weekend brunch at Hawthornes finds a delicate balance between the sort of morning comfort most of us require, and a kind of flavor-driven ambition that sets it apart. French toast—really more of a thrice-cooked bread pudding—is a standout.

Tucked inside the crisp edges is a dense-yet-light center that’s silky with a bit of every sort of bread the kitchen uses here: brioche, challah, multigrain and more. A recent pancake special—there’s a new one every week—saw the flapjacks bright with Meyer lemon’s perfume and topped by a beautifully turned out blueberry compote, its own sweetness tempered by vanilla- and almond-scented cream cheese. Other standards are just as carefully crafted, the waffles light and nutty, the omelets delicate, moist and flavorful with ingredients that have actually been treated as integral parts of the whole as opposed to merely stuffing. KILIMANDJARO 4317 Chestnut St. 215.387.1970 Cuisine type: African Pull into the shopping center at 43rd and Chestnut, walk through the unprepossessing door, and enter a whole new world, borne along by food that rarely falls short of the utterly delicious. Start with an order of fataya, homemade beef patties built on a grind of meat so intensely flavorful, so impeccably perfumed with a hint of bell pepper’s vegetal brightness, a note of spice heat giving shape to the otherwise sweet notes of onion, that you may very well look at your next meatball or beef burrito and wonder what you’re doing. It’s encased in a perfectly crisp pastry—think of it as an African version of an empanada—and impossible to stop eating well beyond the point of fullness. Simple grilled tilapia used that ordinarily unexciting fish as a launching pad for a range of flavors from the savory to the sweet and a palette for what Chef Youma Ba calls African salsa. Three parallel grill marks tattooed each side of the fish, and the smoke from the cooking allowed the edges of the slits that had been cut into the skin and flesh to turn an attractive shade of amber. The skin had bubbled up as if BB’s were hidden beneath it and was every bit as appealing as the flesh. That “African salsa”— onion, green and red peppers, lemon, mustard, a bit of oil—cut each bite and prepared you for the next. It was a thing of beauty. (B.F.)

Oh, Mighty Isis Her Sinful Sundays at Tabu are the perfect way to get your drag-queen fix.

By Bill Chenevert // bchenevert@philadelphiaweekly.com ou might think “Sinful Sunday” is just a cutesy way to match a day of the week with an accompanying adjective, a la Thirsty Thursday, Frisky Friday, etc. But no.

Thing is, Sunday night at Tabu Lounge and Sports Bar is a different kind of church. Or for that matter, you’re welcome to come hear The Goddess Isis preach from her pulpit 12 hours after dragging your hangover-havin’ self to service with Mom and Dad and listen to a preacher cut from an entirely different cloth.

Isis has only been in Philadelphia for about three years, after a long and edifying stint in the South. But that’s been more than enough time for her to get up and running with her own headlining weekly gig, which recently hit its two-year anniversary and is going stronger than ever. She’s more of a Carrie Underwood fan than a Rihanna queen. The first time she was in women’s clothes was when her parents dressed her up as Dolly Parton at the tender age of four. She doesn’t even remember it, but there are plenty of photos.

The boobs, the wig, the dress, everything.

You can’t be Dolly Parton without huge fake tits, can you?

As a youth, Isis grew up in the church. She loved the music, the pageantry, the fainting and outpouring emotion from folks moved by the spirit, whatever that may be. She loved it so much that she went and got herself an A.A. degree in Bible Theology. For real.

At Lee University in Tennessee. Turns out Lee has an outstanding music program, so she traveled up and down North America with a gospel singing group. One of those rare drag queens who does more than put on a wig and a dress and give face like there’s no tomorrow, Isis can also sing. Musicality and performance is at the forefront of her drag. It’s what makes her one of, if not the, most successful and electrifying performers in the city.

Isis has come a long way since her first cognizant drag performance, at the age of 16, when she was pulled on stage in D.C. and forced to wear styrofoam falsies that kept falling down to her stomach. The song was “Make It Happen” by Mariah Carey. She can still turn out a mean Mariah, but she also dabbles in all kinds of divas, from Erykah Badu to Whitney Houston, and when Isis performs drag, she does it all the way. She knows every word, and you can tell. And every Sunday, she and her rotating cast of friends and queens give you show for days for a mere $5. And the

great thing about Tabu’s upstairs lounge? It’s like you’re in her living room. A Sunday service in a drag queen’s living room. And she likes it that way.

She’s also heavily involved in Mimi Imfurst’s Dollhouse Revue at Voyeur on Wednesday nights and has been for years now, too, but that’s a whole different kind of drag night. The stage is high and narrow. The price of admission doesn’t buy you a drink.

There’s four or five times as many people in the audience. On Sunday nights at Tabu, you might just get called up on stage and commanded to take your shirt off. (Especially if you’re straight, and it looks like you’re easy to fuck with.) As for the bang you get with your buck, there’s no better regular, steady night of wig-wearin’, heel-stompin’, lip-syncin’, face-givin’, arm-swingin’ entertainment in the Gayborhood.  Sunday nights. SIX PACK Six Long-Running Film Franchises

Dr. Mabuse (1922–1990): Novelist Nobert Jacques’ bestknown creation is Dr. Mabuse, a mysterious criminal who eludes detection through his mastery of disguise and who, at his most powerful, seems to control all of society. Director Fritz Lang was particularly taken with him: Starting with 1922’s Dr. Mabuse the Gambler, he made three Mabuse films, even making him the focus of his swan song, 1960’s The Thousand Eyes of Dr. Mabuse. Several others have taken up the mantle, including Jess Franco and, most recently, the late Claude Chabrol.

Wong Fei-hung (1949– ): A martial artist, physician and revolutionary who died in 1924, this renaissance man’s lasting legacy is as a folk hero whose likeness has appeared in a record 89 (!!) films, starting in 1949 and continuing, with few gaps, into today.

Mothra (1961– ): Godzilla has appeared perpetually since the 1954 original. But don’t discount Mothra, his winged antagonist and sometime ally, who received her own vehicle in 1961 and often shared titles with her lizardlike costar.

Her most recent appearance was also Godzilla’s, in 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars.

James Bond (1962– ): A British series concerning a shapeshifting functioning alcoholic, recreational fucker and final, delusional symbol of world dominance from a shrunken empire.

Coffin Joe (1963– ): Speaking canonically, there are only three films in the series devoted to José Mojica Marins’ Coffin Joe, a Brazilian, philosophical psychopath with an all-black attire and endless fingernails. But they span five decades, starting with 1963’s At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul and concluding with 2008’s absurdly OTT Embodiment of Evil. In between, Joe has been a constant presence in films, TV shows, even songs.

The Up Series (1964– ) In 1964, a British TV crew made Seven Up!, a short doc that visited 14 seven-year-olds, premised upon the idea that an Englishperson’s future is predicated upon background and class. Then Michael Apted, a researcher on the show, had an even more profound idea: He would visit the kids every seven years, not only to see if this argument was correct, but also to remark more cosmically on aging and life in general. With the new 56 Up, it appears the premise was more or less correct. But whether vocational success is an arbiter of happiness is another story. 

A Half-Century-Long Story’s New Chapter 56 Up, the latest in Michael Apted’s time-capsule series, is in an awful hurry, yet still takes forever to get anywhere.

By Sean Burns // sburns@philadelphiaweekly.com curious and worthy project now sadly at a point of diminishing returns, director Michael Apted’s Up series—which I wager even those who have never seen might still remember as a constant cause of conversation on the old Siskel & Ebert television programs—began life in 1964 as a short documentary for the UK’s Granada TV network called Seven Up! Attempting to prove that Britain’s caste system was still alive and well in the 1960s, director Paul Almond interviewed 20 different sevenyear-olds from varying economic backgrounds, ostentatiously citing the old Jesuit saying: “Give me the child until he is seven and I will show you the man.”

Michael Apted was an assistant on the first picture and since went on to a successful Hollywood career, helming entertainments both decent (Coal Miner’s Daughter) and not so much (The World is Not Enough, last year’s Chasing Mavericks). But every seven years since that early gig, Apted has dropped in for a brief visit with approximately 14 of those original 20 youngsters. The result is a fascinating time capsule, an undertaking obviously unprecedented in modern film, even if I’ve never found the individual movies quite as compelling as their fervent cult following might have you believe.

Almond’s original thesis statement was junked ages ago, and instead we’ve got rather one-of-a-kind, real-time, time-lapse photography, spending a couple of days with ordinary folks every seven years for almost five decades. The obvious appeal here is following your favorite characters—like reality TV done with the seasons spread out 84 months apart, instead of the usual six.

It’s been a unique experience watching these disparate strangers evolve and change over time, and 56 Up is perhaps predictably the mellowest of the movies. It’s somehow fitting in retrospect that 28 Up was the first to cause a real phenomenon—and the first to land a U.S. theatrical release—when these kids were so young and full of piss and vinegar. Now twice that age, they, for the most part, seem to have settled into

an autumnal contentment, not quite embracing old age just yet, but the big conflicts have been largely resolved.

Except, of course, in the case of Neil Hughes—the troubled breakout star of this series who spent a far portion of his 20s wandering homeless around Scotland—still bristling with a furtive intelligence that may never quite be at rest.

Hughes seems to have finally landed on his feet, working as a local politician and lay minister in a small village, but there’s something cutting about his commentary. He openly admits that he never figured out how to make any money and, while candidly discussing his suicidal moments, makes it pointedly clear that fans of this series will never understand his personal turmoil, no matter how many kind letters they send.

Hughes’segment is the most affecting, unfortunately frontloaded at the start of the film. Probably because he’s the one “character” everybody remembers from these movies, Apted is uncommonly patient in allowing it to unfold in the present tense. The other 13 aren’t so lucky, and 56 Up is bogged down with a surfeit of footage, constantly cutting from decade to decade, filling us in on eight movies and almost 50 years of often notparticularly interesting backstory—just trying to keep track of all the divorces requires a flowchart—before bringing

us up to speed on recent events in sequences lasting barely 10 minutes in length. The result, repeating itself again and again, gives the sense of a movie that’s in an awful hurry, yet still takes forever to get anywhere. (This is probably an unavoidable conceptual flaw. But 14 characters is just way too many for anybody who isn’t Robert Altman.)

Another design problem is that agewise, 56 just ain’t all that different from 49. The financial crisis looms large in the background of several stories, putting the kibosh on a few early retirement plans. (This series is nothing if not attuned to the hardscrabble nuts and bolts of what it takes to make a living.)

But for the most part, these folks are still pretty much where we left them.

Apted is 72 years old, yet vows to continue the series for as many more installments as he can. I hate to sound ghoulish, but 63 Up and 70 Up will probably be a lot more eventful—and not in a good way. 

After 10 years of quiet, Desaparecidos’ decisive punk is returning to action.

f Desaparecidos ever decide to publish The Desaparecidos Guide to Songwriting, the book’s first chapter should consist of the word “extreme” repeated across 50 pages in 100-point Helvetica. The Omaha-rooted band, who existed for about a year in 2001/2002 and seriously reunited in 2012, long ago decided that making polarizing choices would be their thing.

On 2002’s Read Music/Speak Spanish, Desaparecidos’ lone LP, frontman Conor Oberst (better known for Bright Eyes) expectorated symbol after symbol of a shattered, hopeless America: insurance companies eager to exploit, ordinary people desperate to ascend in social class, sugary soda temporarily filling emotional holes, municipal bodies happily bulldozing natural scenery to make more convenience stores. Oberst is extremely judgmental—of both himself and others—and extremely bitter. In line with his whisper/scream vocal dynamic, the group’s DIY punk/prickly post-hardcore oscillates between extremely despondent and extremely furious, as if the music is intent on having an emotional breakdown and could feasibly crack in either direction. In Desaparecidos’ world, wounds are meant to be picked and picked and picked, and that’s what makes them so thrilling. They have zero reservations about painting hopelessly grim pictures and doing whatever they can to embed them into your skull.

One adjective that has little business being attached to Desaparecidos is “happy.” On record, these guys barely receive enough sunshine to make it through the week. It’s jarring and bizarre, then, that guitarist Denver Dalley compared the resuscitated band to the Kids in the Hall in an interview with website Rock Candy last year. “We’re all just kinda goofy people,” the 31-yearold guitarist affirms now. “We take the music very seriously, and it’s very serious content, but those are the two byproducts of us being in a room. There’s the part of us that couldn’t be more riled up and feisty about these issues, but at the same time, we like to joke with each other and just kind of have fun with it. When we’re not actually playing the songs, we like to crack each other up and be like little kids, but then the moment we start playing, we snap into that.”

The dichotomy is plausible if you give it a moment’s thought, and that joy occasionally materializes on the band’s first fresh songs in years. “The Left is Right,” for example, rides on an unspeakably intense, albeit relatively upbeat, riff. Oberst’s lyrics championing progressive ideology and idealistic protests still emphasize desperation and ruin (“We’re doomed” is the song’s last line), but it’s still easy to get the idea that Desaparecidos are a band psyched to be active, loud and uncompromising again. “Ultimately, we just got back together because schedules were right, and the timing was right, and we just wanted to, but yeah, there’s a lot of things going on right now that [we’d] love to comment on,” Dalley says. “I think there’s a lot of wonderful music out there that is lacking content lyrically. I remember as a kid when I’d hear a song that made me want to go and learn about that issue or look something up. few years before Nina Simone decided to become a singer, she was just another black girl from North Carolina living in Philadelphia with her musical talent and big dreams. Having trained throughout her youth to become a classical pianist, even putting in time at the famed Julliard in New York City, she hoped to gain admission to the Curtis Institute of Music, located in her newfound hometown.

Simone—who was still using her birth name, Eunice Waymon, at the time—was so sure she would impress Curtis’ judges with what she had learned behind the keyboards from age 7, she’d moved her entire family to the City of Brotherly Love. However, the school wasn’t as awed by her interpretations of Mozart and Beethoven as past teachers. Believing it was based on racism, the rejection would leave her “hurt and bitter for many years,” she told Q. magazine’s Lloyd Bradley in 1991. Yet, had that graceful girl been allowed to enter Curtis’ hallowed halls, popular music would’ve been denied the beauty and brilliance that defines her musical legacy.

In a sense, Nina Simone, who would’ve turned 80 years old on Feb. 21, was born on the streets of Philadelphia when Eunice Waymon thought she would sully her family name by playing pop songs in local bars and supper clubs. A few years later, when Philly-based radio jock Sid Marks jammed her stunning cover of George Gershwin’s “I Love You, Porgy” on his program The Mark of Jazz—sometimes three or four times in a row—the word began to spread up and down the East Coast about Simone.

With a haunting voice that had the power to simultaneously intimidate and seduce, Simone became a powerful voice in 20th-century music and civil rights politics. She marched with Martin Luther King, wrote songs like “Mississippi Goddam” and, in not-so-ladylike fashion, began to scare folks with her brutal honesty. In truth, Simone developed a notorious rep for being frightening in both life and song. Even my personal favorite, “Wild is the Wind,” which sounds like a cool torch song when sung by its originator, Johnny Mathis, became an aching anthem of romanticism and regret, slavery and liberation in Simone’s hands.

When my jazz-loving Uncle Carl played “Wild is the Wind” for me when I was 17, she scared me to death.

At the same time, I fell in love with the fear.

“It’s scary, that’s the truth,” Grammy Awardwinning bassist/singer Esperanza Spalding told me in 2011. Inspired by Simone, she covered “Wild is the Wind” on her acclaimed third LP Chamber Music Society. “Music is just an outcropping of whatever we’re really feeling. From people that I’ve talked to who were close to her, Nina Simone was supposedly terribly insecure, lonely and afraid that people wouldn’t like what she did. Somehow, that kind of manifested itself into this hard, strong, don’t-messwith-me, I-know-what-I’m-about (thing). But, it was

really sort of the opposite. ‘Wild is the Wind’ somehow captures the quality of her nature.”

Indeed, Simone’s wildness drove her as an artist, a force that called out wrong-doers and church bombers and made her both a star and a controversial figure. It was that wildness that often made her mean and resentful, snapping at family, friends and audience members. And that wildness propelled Simone from the barrooms of Philly to the queen of “Bach, boogie and bebop,” as writer Herb Boyd once elegantly wrote.

Ten years ago, the woman who had once been so spirited in life and in song died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 70. But her wildness continues to inspire.

While there has been much talk about Simone lately—especially with a controversial film starring a skin-darkened, prosthetics-wearing Zoe Saldana in production—on her birthday, I plan on lighting a couple of scented candles and playing “Wild is the Wind” over and over and over. 

The dish on avenue dishes

K, the secret is out. East Passyunk Avenue has established itself as a Philadelphia dining mecca thanks to some positive publicity, including a little notoriety from Zagat, the popular restaurant rating source.

Now that the critics have spoken, the chefs along the diagonal, decorated destination are gearing up to please palates and wallets with the debut of East Passyunk Avenue Restaurant Week taking place Feb. 24 to March 2. Twenty-one establishments have signed on to offer a three-course prix fixe lunch and/or dinner for $15 to $35.

“With the addition of new places and so much great press at the end of 2012, including being named Zagat’s Food Neighborhood of the Year, we knew we had the capacity and the momentum to start something on our own to highlight East Passyunk’s dining diversity and talent in the kitchen,” Renee Gilinger, East Passyunk Avenue Business Improvement District executive director, said.

The participants (all of which can be found in this special section) have finalized their menus now appearing on the eastpassyunkrestaurantweek.com website, which has had more than 170,000 hits since its lateJanuary launch.

“With 21 restaurants and 25 menus, we knew we needed an expanded website so that diners could dive deep into the dishes that make our dining scene so unique and easily find everything they needed to help decide which places to visit,” Gilinger said.

To the perplexing parking problem for those coming from outside of South Philly, East Passyunk also is providing valet parking all week for $8 with validation from a participating restaurant and $15 without. The stands are located next to the Singing Fountain, East Passyunk Avenue and Tasker street, across from Cantina Los Caballitos, 1646 E. Passyunk Ave., and in front of Le Virtu, 1927 E. Passyunk Ave. The directions page of the website includes other helpful commuting tips.

Of course, it may be a good idea to click on the restaurant of choice as some places are only offering their special menus on select nights. Gilinger has some helpful pointers for the first-timers.

“For those new to East Passyunk’s thriving dining scene, it’s a great opportunity to try some ‘it’ places that are in the food news on a daily basis, as well as our neighborhood favorites,” she said.

Many of the chefs are taking a creative approach with their menus by adding on a bonus course or beverage. Izumi, 1601. E. Passyunk Ave., for instance, is offering those who are still hungry an un donut with red bean dipping sauce. Dinner at Mamma Maria Ristorante, 1637 E. Passyunk Ave., includes complimentary red or white wine, homemade limoncello, dessert and espresso, cappuccino or coffee.

Based on the early feedback, the first annual East Passyunk Avenue Restaurant Week may just be a taste of many more to come.

Moment of truth: NBC has finally let the red-headed stepchild of its programming stable out of hiding so it can run its much-postponed fourth season. Now, since the sitcom has lost prized creator/showrunner Dan Harmon, it kind of seems like a facsimile of itself. The season opener, which halfheartedly mocked The Hunger Games, certainly felt that way.

However, the annual, usually crazy/clever Halloween episode (which aired on Valentine’s Day) felt like a return to form. Being the fan that I am, I’ll most likely stick it out until the end—which I can’t help thinking will come sooner than later.

OUT THERE Fridays, 10:30pm, IFC Captive audience: Fans of South Park, King of the Hill and other animated sitcoms that are crude, cute and clever.

Moment of truth: People who dig the crudely drawn small-town satire Mike Judge, Trey Parker and Matt Stone brought to their iconic animated programs may certainly get a kick out of this new show. It revolves around Chad (voiced by creator and former South Park animator Ryan Quincy), a furball-headed teen going through the adolescent motions in the quirky hamlet of Holford. Fred Armisen, Megan Mullally and King of the Hill alumna Pamela Adlon provide some of the other voices on the show, which could definitely become a cult item for comic-cartoon lovers and stoners alike.

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT Mondays, 8:30pm, CBS Captive audience: Bad ‘90s-sitcom nostalgists; people who can’t change the channel because they don’t have arms or they have locked-in syndrome or something.

Moment of truth: The most mediocre sitcom on the Tiffany Network that’s not overseen by Chuck Lorre has inexplicably returned for its seventh season. That well-chiseled weirdo Patrick Warburton is still the show’s saving grace, giving Christopher Walken-esque line readings of the lame jokes the writers saddle him with, while David Spade continues to play the world’s most implausible ladies’ man, usually delving into a loathsome-douchebag shtick and hurling offensive comments at his Indian assistant, Adhir Kalyan, another bright spot. My God, I hate CBS sitcoms.

Sat., Feb. 16, Christ Church. livearts-fringe.org Overall vibe: A collaboration between Japan’s acclaimed Seinendan Theater Company and Osaka University’s Intelligent Robotics Laboratory, this first-ever, full-scale robot-human theater production can really only be described as mind-blowing.

Most memorable moment: For most, it was likely the point during each performance when they forgot that robots don’t actually have souls, and preceded to feel human emotions for them anyway.

Scene stealer: The robots, duh. Although, truly blurring the line between man and machine, one couldn’t help but be particularly in awe with Geminoid F, a remarkably lifelike android that comforts a girl suffering from a fatal illness in the opening piece, Sayonara. (Nicole Finkbiner)

I’m a 31-year-old genderqueer with a large family. My only sister got engaged 48 hours ago, and she’s moving fast on planning the wedding.

I have two questions.

No. 1 question: I texted my sister the only date I wasn’t available in the next two years, Columbus Day weekend 2013. I have my 10year college reunion, which I’ve been organizing. My sister texted me back that they picked this Columbus Day weekend for the wedding even though they have no idea if the places they want will be booked up. It quickly came out that they didn’t check with anyone about potential conflicts. She wants me to be the maid of honor, and I’m not sure what to do. Columbus Day weekend is of no significance to them (it’s not the anniversary of the date they met or anything), and I can’t reschedule the reunion.

No. 2 question: I was born female but do not identify that way. I’m genderqueer and do not look like a girl. I have not worn a dress in 10 years. In the past, my sister said she would consider putting me in a pantsuit-ish kind of thing at her wedding, which would be great, but I am worried that now I’m rocking the boat too much.

Dan, help! If my sister can’t get her weekend, it will be because they’re rushing and everything is booked, but I have already caused trouble! Is it worth it to fight for the pantsuit thing, or should I just leave it alone and do what she wants?

Thank You So Much No. 1 answer: If your sister didn’t check with anyone—not members of her immediate family, not members of her bridal party—about potential conflicts, then your sister should’ve anticipated that some of the folks wouldn’t be able to attend. Folks who aren’t getting married have lives and commitments of their own, which means they can have conflicts, and your sister could’ve worked around those conflicts if she had cared to ask about them.

But she didn’t care to ask, because she seems to be one of those brides-to-be who think an engagement ring on her finger puts her ass at the center of the universe. Here’s hoping your sister can’t get the venue she wants and has to reschedule. If that doesn’t happen, TYSM, tell your sister you’ll be with her in spirit and send a gift.

No. 2 answer: The fact that your sister has been engaged for 48 hours and is already furious with her maid-of-honor-elect is a bad sign. You’ll be doing yourself, both families, and your sister a service if you stand up to her now. A little pushback now will either prevent your sister from going Bridezilla or get you dropped from the wedding party. You literally can’t lose. So tell your sister now that you’re delighted to be her maid of honor, if scheduling allows, and that you look forward to shopping for a pantsuit that matches her dress and the dresses of her bridal party. If she tells you that you have to

wear a dress to be her maid of honor, TYSM, then it’s clear that the dress is more important to your sister than the person wearing it, and you should tell her to find someone else to model it at her wedding.

A gay friend of mine is getting married in Seattle, and we’re hoping to throw him a most excellent bachelor party. However, as a straight dude, I’m fairly clueless about gay strip clubs in the Seattle area. Can you please recommend one or two good ones?

Straight Best Man There are no gay strip clubs in Seattle, SBM, I’m sorry to say. You can blame the Washington State Liquor Control Board for that sad fact. Adults in Seattle can look at naked people or they can have a drink, but they can’t have a drink while looking at naked people. While there’s enough demand for naked ladies in Seattle to make nonbooze-servin’ straight strip clubs economically viable, there isn’t enough demand for naked boys to make gay strip clubs economically viable. (And people have tried.)

There is, however, a great gay strip club in Portland, Ore., called Silverado. If gay strippers are a must, plan a road trip as well as a bachelor party.

My boyfriend and I are talking about getting married, and I am incredibly excited about marrying this awesome dude. My problem is that my ideal engagement ring is something that looks nice but is cheap. Seriously, a $50 ring would be perfect. I don’t want something expensive because (a) it’ll make me paranoid about losing it, and (b) I’d rather use the money for something else, like a house. However, my guy wants to spend about a grand on an engagement/ wedding ring set. Given his income, this is far from an outrageous expense, but I’d still rather have my $50 cubic zirconia. I’ve talked with him about this, but he’s holding fast. Any ideas how I might be able to get my way and make him see that he’s my prize, not the jewelry?

Not A Ring Girl The difference between the engagement ring you’d prefer and the ring set your fiancé wants to buy— $950—ain’t nothin’, NARG, but it’s not enough to buy a fucking house. I could see digging in your heels if your fiancé wanted to spend $20,000 on a ring, as that kind of money would go a long way toward a down payment; I could see going to war if he was planning to go into debt to buy you a rock.

But learning to pick your battles is the secret to a happy, successful marriage, NARG, and the difference between a $50 ring and a far from outrageous $1,000 ring set isn’t worth fighting about. You want to make him see that he’s your prize? Let him have his way on this.
