LETTERS BIG PICTURE

In response to Nicole Finkbiner’s review of Eris Temple Arts’ Create Chaos! exhibit: I find it disturbing to consider that an adult posed a child for an image like “Kissing,” particularly in view of the decapitation [motif]. ERIC HAMELL Germantown The artist responds: I would like to clarify that the models in the project are adults. The woman in this photo is 25. My project featured at Eris Temple Arts is a project in which I recreate my own personal childhood memories. The project deals with issues I questioned about myself, things such as gender identity, body image and sexual orientation, as addressed in “Kissing.” The scenarios in each image are real, each a direct reenactment from my memory. Each person in the series is presented anonymously. I did this in hopes that it would make each issue accessible to the viewer. The project was a way to cope with my past while further strengthening my bond with the people in my present. I can see how without context the image can be misconstrued. CATHLEEN PARRA via philadelphiaweekly.com

RUNNING WILDE

In response to Jessica Foley’s 30-second review of An Ideal Husband: Clearly, the author missed the exposition given earlier. The sin of his youth referred to in this quote is one of the selling of a state secret, NOT one of homosexuality—implied or otherwise. Yes, Wilde was living in a repressed society and dealing with his own sexuality and this quote can easily be construed as some sort of statement with regards to this, but to imply that Ian Peakes, whose character must wholly love and cherish his wife for the plot to make any sense, should convey a latent homosexual love for Goring seems to me to be unhelpful and, in fact, would be most decidedly detrimental to the telling of the story within the confines of this particular production. KAREN via philadelphiaweekly.com

IN HOT WATER

In response to Brian Freedman’s roundup of local restaurants serving hot chocolate this season: Wow, was I disappointed after reading this. I really thought I was going to learn of REAL chocolatiers in Philly. Sadly, it’s a list of where I can go and get a melted Hershey’s bar in a cup. Cacao is a remarkably complex and wonderful bean that deserves to be savored, and

unfortunately we have become accustomed to mask the wonders of the bean with the sweetness and the high produced by sugar. If anyone is really interested in trying cacao as it should be, Sazon is the place to go. No one else will dare to challenge your palate by offering you cacao in a variety of manners and with a variety of companion ingredients that actually complement, rather than mask, the flavors of the bean. LUIS SALAZAR via philadelphiaweekly.com At its essence, hot chocolate is ground cacao, mixed with various other ingredients. This is how the Aztecs, Mayans and early Europeans drank it. Modern hot chocolate is pressed cacao (to remove the cocoa butter) to make chocolate (and the various ways companies then “dope” the chocolate) and then use that medium for the masses to drink. So every drink you described, at its base, is already diluted. I challenge you to go to Sazon Restaurant, and try their cacao drinks. There are over 20 different drinks that the Alchemist has created. I assure you, once you try them, you will be forced to retract this article or write a new one. JOE RICHARDSON via philadelphiaweekly.com It’s hot chocolate! True, Sazon may go above and beyond, but cacao is an acquired taste, no? Some palates aren’t ready for that rawness. Please calm down, foodies. ANONYMOUS via philadelphiaweekly.com

HOLD YOUR LIQUOR

Regarding Gov. Corbett’s plan to change the state’s liquor sales: The PLCB is a self-sufficient state-run system that puts money back into the coffers. If it is done away with, 4,000-plus people will be out of work. Only the big-box stores will be able to purchase the licenses. Will prices drop? Very doubtful. The state has such huge buying power, that no one other than Walmarttype stores will be able to force suppliers to lower prices. It would be a quick windfall for the state, but over the long term, the money that the PLCB puts into the coffers each year will disappear. [We] would be shooting ourselves in the foot and putting thousands out of work. I can almost guarantee higher prices, big stores as owners, not many rural stores, less choices, poor product knowledge, no specialty ordering/transfers from nearby PLCB run liquor stores and many other issues. WHAT’S HAPPENING — BEFORE IT HAPPENS ... [ FILM ]

Soul Food Junkies

Soul food is both amazing and abysmal. It manages to scratch that culinary itch tied to comfort, but the health costs can be high. The body was just not made to handle that much fat—hauntingly delicious as it is—all at once, but it is a historically important part of African-American culture. Soul food comes out of slavery, a combination of the rich cooking traditions of Africa with the harsh conditions (and substandard sustenance) forced upon slaves in America. This cuisine, borne out of strife, has become a staple of many African-American and Southern diets. Soul Food Junkies, Byron Hurt’s informative 2012 documentary, explores the connection between the food and its consumers, showing how it’s so firmly a part of black culture— to the detriment of many people’s health—but also revealing how the alternatives for inner-city African Americans leave little room for improvement. Food deserts, a problem Philadelphia has yet to truly fix as well, are areas where there is little-to-no access to fresh food; fast food chains and small convenience stores with snacks passing off as meals are the only affordable and accessible options. Soul Food Junkies questions these unhealthy practices, asking if this facet of African-American culture is too much of a hindrance to be a symbol. The film is screening for free at Community College of Philadelphia, but RSVPs have reportedly reached capacity, so you can stand at the door and hope for some room, or stream it online via PBS’ website. While the city’s four nationally recognized design schools might be churning out talented young fashion designers, few opt to stick around Philly after graduation, and even fewer have the entrepreneurial know-how to launch a successful company. This is essentially the impetus behind the Philadelphia Fashion Incubator, a yearlong residency program seeking to support emerging local designers and Philly’s fashion community as a whole. Last March, PFI selected its inaugural team of designers-in-residence—Melissa D’Agostino (D’Agostino Fashion Textile Design), Autumn Kietponglert (Autumnlin Atelier), Kaitlyn Doherty (Kaitlyn Elizabeth), Latifat Obajinmi and Moriamo Johnson (Aso Damisi)—and offered them a slew of vital resources and opportunities to build their brands, as well as their own swanky workspace inside Macy’s Center City. Now, before these designers officially set out to stake their claim in the fashion industry—ushering in a new promising squad of DIRs—they’ll be temporarily setting up shop inside Knit Wit, one of Philly’s oldest, independently-run boutiques. Encapsulating the unique vision and artistry of the four brands, the pop-up shop will feature each of their spring/summer 2013 collections, which the designers first had a chance to debut in September as part of the Macy’s Fashion Show. Those who aren’t afraid to make a statement with their style are likely to be most drawn to Atelier’s one-of-a-kind, intensely detailed haute couture pieces and the vibrant, African-inspired textiles of Aso Damisi. Meanwhile, the ready-to-wear collections from D’Agostino and Kaitlyn Elizabeth are marked by sleek lines and classic, structural shapes. Nicole Finkbiner

[EVENT]

Philadelphia Tattoo Arts Convention Burlesque dancers, live bands and sideshow performers set the scene as the Pennsylvania Convention Center is once again home for all things related to the art of tattooing. From a casual fan looking to meet Amy Nicoletto, star of TLC’s now-defunct L.A. Ink, to a veteran artist interested in attending a machine maintenance seminar, there’s really something for everyone. Perhaps the foremost draw for folks on both ends of the spectrum is the opportunity to get tattooed by one of the over 200 world-famous artists in attendance. But hey, what fun would all of this be without some competition to spice things up? Luckily, the higher-ups wondered the same, slating contests throughout the weekend to keep everyone on their toes. Categories vary by day, or in some cases gender, and include tattoo of the day, best portrait, best traditional, most unusual, best sleeve and even best cover-up, amongst many others. Whether you’re a newcomer or have been in the game for years, the Philly Tattoo Convention is a great place to celebrate the art form that seems to constantly defy all the taboos our world can throw at it. In 2009, local graffiti/mural artist Steve Powers, along with SEPTA and the Mural Arts program, created his “A Love Letter for You” project on the sides of West Philly buildings along the Market-Frankford El line, a series of murals that tell the story of a young man sending love notes to a SEPTA cashier. With fun, colorful paintings adorned with phrases like, “If you were here, I’d be home now,” and “Meet me on Fifty-Second if only for Fifty Seconds,” it’s a sweet visual treat for weary commuters, and since spring of 2010, has been the attraction of Love Train, an annual Valentine’s Day ride on trains adorned with hearts and filled with lovers of both romance and art. Since 2011’s event featured an actual on-the-El wedding officiated by Mayor Nutter, this year’s ante has been upped: It’s a singles event. So, come aboard, and you may meet the lucky fool who’ll be singing you O’Jays ballads all year long. The festivities end back at SEPTA’s headquarters, where food, drinks, music and special Valentine’s Day giveaways are on tap. Randy LoBasso 2pm. $25. PHILLYNOW // MONDAY, FEB. 11 [MUSIC]

Toro Y Moi

Chaz Bundick’s a great mix of things. The 26-year-old from South Carolina’s a master of experimenting with a mix of genres and grooves. Take “New Beat,” the killer single from his sophomore, 2011’s Underneath the Pine. It deftly blends airy ‘70s AM gold with disco skronk and a little worldly percussion. Yes, there’s an element of chill to his music, and it garnered him a slightly undeserved corralling into a “chillwave” moment that was happening for a minute. But the calming subtlety of his jazzy funkiness doesn’t mean this show’ll be a hushed and quiet affair—especially from what we’ve heard on his brand new Anything in Return. With flourishes of ‘90s dance grooves and the occasional salute to DJ Shadow’s hip-hoppy sample sickness, this could be a sweaty night. The single, “Say That,” has a DeeLite-friendly bend with a hiccupy, light backbeat, and imagining this one live and loud is a pretty sweet bugout opportunity. Bundick’s delivery is so effortless and controlled, but his beats, samples and grooves are anything but. Like a heavenly cocktail of Little Dragon, Small Black, Caribou and Neon Indian, this tea’ll make the modern electronic dance music fans lose their minds. Bill Chenevert 8pm. $15. With Wild Belle. The Country Wife

Muswell Hill

All the husbands in town think Mr. Horner is the perfect super-best-friend candidate for their wives since he’s been declared impotent, but infidelities and innuendos are in abundance throughout this social satire. Broad St. 215.735.4847. broadstreetministry.org

Social media sites are ablaze after an earthquake in Haiti abruptly leaves 100,000 dead and more than two million homeless, but six posh Londoners are still focused on everyday matters such as love, weight, work and the evening’s dinner. This play is a stark comment on the promise and limitations of technology and remaining human in a dehumanizing age. 8pm. $21. Villanova Theatre, 800 E. Lancaster Ave. villanovatheatre.org

Former San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is likely one of the most progressive—and the best-dressed, definitely the best-looking—lieutenant governors in the country. A former mayor of San Francisco, in 2004, he directed the city’s clerk to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples before it was cool (or legal) and helped turn the Silicon Valley’s largest metropolis into the beacon of technological advancement it is today. Newsom is currently touring the country to speak about his new book, Citizenville: How to Take the Town Square Digital and Reinvent Government, about how citizens can and should use technology and social media to influence government. Tonight, he’s in Philly and will be discussing his publication with Mayor Michael Nutter as part of the Constitution Center’s appropriatelytitled “We the People” 10th anniversary celebration. Romance is in the eye of the beholder: One couple’s perfect date is another’s eyeroll-worthy cheese-fest. With that in mind, we offer up an eclectic Valentine’s sampling of what might be...

The Intimate Pizza Date

Barbuzzo, 110 S. 13th St. 215.546.9300. barbuzzo.com It gets loud inside Barbuzzo, occasionally smells like meat and garlic, and, on a busy night, you’ll have to suck in your gut like you’re wearing a pair of too-small Spanx just to squeeze your way through to the restrooms. Which is exactly what makes Barbuzzo such a romantic spot: Physical proximity isn’t just an option here—it’s a requirement. So give in to it and get all up in one another’s proverbial grills. Snuggle close, either at your table or a barside perch. Order a French Farmer cocktail (St. Germain and champagne) or a sexy-rich bottle of Portuguese red, and let the primal juices flow with a house-cured charcuterie platter. From there, hit the stations of the umami cross and see where the night takes you: Dig into roasted marrow bone, feed each other chunks of gorgonzola dolce, share the now-legendary Uovo pizza with its truffled egg glistening on top (pictured, left). Maybe order a plate of tonnarelli and slurp at the noodles Lady and the Tramp-style. Your PDA may gross out your dining room neighbors, but hey: It’s Valentine’s Day. If you can’t devolve into a puddly mess of love on Feb.14th in a narrow, urbane space like this one, then you may as well, to misquote the great philosopher of eros, Young MC, go hang yourself with a celibate rope. —Brian Freedman

The Literary Romantic Meal

London Grill, 2301 Fairmount Ave. 215.978.4545. londongrill.com

Okay, it may not bear the iconic status of Le Bec Fin or the lamented Bookbinders. Still, London Grill has nonetheless been around long enough—two decades in its current incarnation, and another 150 years before that in one form or another—to be fairly considered a Philadelphia institution. Its Fairmount location means that, if it’s a nice night or you’re bundled well in appropriately European overcoats and scarves, it makes for a briskly soothing walk from the

From the 37th floor of Two Liberty Place, R2L’s sparkling, panoramic views of the city are the ideal setting for an old-school, dress-to-impress first date. Sweep your companion up the private elevator and into the dimly lit lounge, situated around a sleek, lush bar that offers a host of original drinks and an impeccable wine selection. The inventive New American menu features selections ranging from grilled Scottish salmon filet to red wine-braised short ribs with crushed salt-baked potatoes and peppercorn jus. The lobster mac and cheese isn’t your typical Krafty affair; extra-large pieces of macaroni are individually treated to mounds of luscious cheese sauce and topped with chunks of the delectable crustacean. The perfectly sized portions will guarantee you don’t overindulge or—horror of horrors—feel compelled to ask for a doggie bag on the first date. But the real feast here is for the eyes: Cozy up to your sweetheart while taking in all that Philly has to offer through floor-to-ceiling windows that offer a breathtaking view of the city skyline. Bonus points if you plan ahead and time your arrival to just before sunset, that you might start the rest of your lives as the sun dips below the horizon and turns the sky brilliant shades of red, pink and gold, revealing the twinkling nighttime sky. —Anastasia Barbalios

Museum of Art, the Rodin or the Library. So start there—at the Rodin, say, musing over the intertwined human figures, the torsos and hands and all that sensual whatnot. Talk it over on the stroll to Fairmount Avenue, then sit down with one of the best beer-cocktail lists in town to choose between the Gentleman & a Scholar, the Chocolate Cherry Love Child or the Flower Bud. The Sports Fan’s Stab at Romance City Tap House, 3925 Walnut St. 215.662.0105. citytaphouse.com

The elevator whisks you up to a room filled with delicious aromas, and the hostess seats you in a cozy, corner table in the large woodtrimmed open dining room, far away from the noisy bar teeming with the West Philly in-crowd. You longingly gaze across the table to lock eyes and start this perfect night, and your date looks back with love . . . at the game on the big screen over your shoulder. That’s okay; if your sports-obsessed partner is more interested in the guy in tights who’s a thousand miles away, at least you can enjoy a delicious meal and sparkling two-minute conversations during commercials. City Tap House offers a New American twist on traditional pub fare: Burgers and sandwiches are joined by more interesting items like ricotta gnocchi and a smoked octopus and chorizo flatbread. Their famous Tap Burger is spruced up with a thick layer of crispy pork belly, Lancaster rustic cheddar, agrodolce onions, beer gastrique and dijonaise. The daily-changing beer menu features more than 60 taps, including stouts, IPAs, Belgians and even gluten-free options. The restaurant also features a green outdoor seating area high above Walnut Street outfitted with fire pits that you and your date can cozy up to—once the game is over, of course. —A.B.

The Flirty French Crepes

Beau Monde, 624 S. 6th St. 215.592.0656. creperie-beaumonde.com It was almost four years ago, and I had spent months attempting to court she who was not yet my girlfriend. We’d done almost everything the casual-dating world had to offer: hikes, book readings, bars, dinner. I’d met her friends; I’d even creepily read books she’d mentioned liking so we’d have more to talk about. But she was still unsure about me. I can be awkward as hell. That is, until one October evening when we headed to the creperie Beau Monde for dinner. She’ll never admit it, but I’m pretty sure our evening at the Bainbridge restaurant finally tipped the scales in my favor (or, maybe, broke the camel’s back; still trying to figure out which analogy is the appropriate one). The first thing that’s

sort of striking about Beau Monde is that the crepes are actually good—and worth their steep pricing. I’m not a foodie; my idea of a crepe before that night was peanut butter and Nutella wrapped and microwaved. Who’d have thought you could shove things like roasted leeks, seafood sauce, shrimp, spinach and herb butter in there, too? That’s exactly what she ordered, while I took on the crepe with spinach, tomatoes, olives and feta cheese. We shared the food. We shared knowing gazes. And I even managed to hold that eye contact despite the fact that Beau Monde’s waitresses are dressed like French maids. Steph and I are now going on our third year in cohabitation. —Randy LoBasso

The Vegetarian Nirvana

Vedge, 1221 Locust St. 215.320.7500. vedgerestaurant.com Kate Jacoby and Rich Landau’s Locust Street redoubt has it all: A decor as elegant as it is comfortable; a menu whose procession of courses moves like a symphony, from the deceptively simple to the overtly sublime; and service on par with other fine dining destinations in town. Add to the fact that even the bones of the building harken back to one of the more romantic spaces in Philadelphia’s dining history—Deux Cheminees, Fritz Blank’s legendary homage to all things French and civilized—and you have the perfect location to play the role of either (a) Rick Blaine or (b) Ilsa Lund, minus the cigarettes and Nazis that they had to deal with in Casablanca. But this is a thoroughly modern restaurant, Chef Landau’s flavors often toeing the line between the familiar and the exotic, and all the more complete for it. So: Ensconce yourself at a table and in the glow of the always-flattering light, share a bottle of wine from Jacoby’s remarkable list, and let the quiet sophistication wash over you. The meaty depths of portabella carpaccio. The exotic kiss of saffron cauliflower soup. The sweet potato paté, all deep and layered from its stint on the wood grill. This is a great, romantic restaurant that just so happens to be vegan. Flavor is king here, and the result is a perfect V-Day destination. —B.F.

The Meat-Lovers’ Rendezvous

Koo Zee Doo, 614 N. 2nd St. 215.923.8080. koozeedoo.com Flowers and chocolate are for amateurs. At the end of the day—or the evening—the fact remains that love is a biological phenomenon, and nothing pumps up your love muscle like an endless stream of hot protein. Enter Koo Zee Doo. “The Portuguese are a people who express love and friendship through their cooking,” claim David Gilberg and Carla Gonçalves. They know of what they speak: The husband and wife team—he

cooks the dishes, she bakes the desserts— opened up this cozy BYOB after falling in love across kitchens all over the city. So romance is in the air here, and at $50 per person, the chef’s tasting is well worth it. Sit at the openkitchen counter-top and watch Chef Gilberg shake a pan of moelas (that’s braised chicken gizzards) that will make your taste buds sing with a sharp mix of guilt and joy. You won’t know exactly what you’re going to get—just like marriage!—but no matter what, you will likely get to try traditional Bacalhau. They serve up the dried and salted cod specialty as either a crispy potato and cod croquette (Pastéis de Bacalhau) or creamy version with roasted carrots and onions (Bacalhau com Natas). On a recent visit, ten chef’s selections featured only one non-meat dish. The mushroom and bread porridge with cheese and poached egg dish was delicious, but by then, hours of feasting on meats and drinking bottles of champagne in the warm cozy restaurant had converted us, a quinoa-and-kale loving people, into stark raving carnivores. Tip: Even if, like us, you can be a bit shy about eating the digestive tract of other mammals, request the chicken gizzards. The dish is both a revelation, and a lesson in love: You have to be willing to try everything once—and then you may just want to do it again. —Tara Murtha

The Broke-andin-Love Special

Franklin Court, 317 Chestnut St. 215.965.2305. nps.gov/inde/franklin-court.htm Maybe you’re a teenager, putting all your off hours into homework, extracurriculars and babysitting your little cousin, so you don’t have an after-school job this semester and also don’t have much in the way of extra cash left over from the last birthday. Or maybe you’re a full-fledged adult working a crappy job 50 hours a week just to pay the rent and bills, and still don’t have any significant extra dough to speak of. Either way, here’s the important thing to remember: You don’t need to spend a lot of money on celebrations of love if you’ve got a big ol’ vault full of earnest, wide-eyed sincerity to offer your sweetie. So head to Old City, where you can walk down cobblestone streets holding hands and marvel that hey, George Washington’s boots might have touched the road in exactly the same place our feet just landed now. Pick up a couple of $4.50 cheesesteaks or falafels at the cart out on the corner of Third and Market, and carry them up a block to Franklin Court, where, regardless of whether the historical stuff is under renovation (again!) you can stretch out on the benches in the garden—quieter, greener and somehow realer than Love Park, despite whatever lingering tourists might be about in February—feed one another, and savor the idea that you don’t need anything for a romantic meal the Founding Fathers didn’t have. Except cheesesteaks. And, uh, falafel. —S.H.S.

The Classy Edge-ofTown Getaway

Mica, 8609 Germantown Ave. 267.335.3912. micarestaurant.com Once upon a time, back in the dark days of our city’s culinary life, you had to come into the heart of the city proper for a seriously romantic meal. But as the range of great restaurants has expanded within the downtown area, so, too, has it outside the traditional bounds of the edible Philadelphia. Which is all to say that Mica, in the far northwestern reaches of the Philly city limits, is as sexy as anything closer to the Liberty Bell or Rittenhouse Square. The dining room—full of earth tones and expanses of wood, the fireplace off to the side—is a cozy, comfortable space. The wine list affords you the opportunity to drink like a millionaire even if you’re bringing home an intern’s wages: Smart selections that won’t break the bank mean you can imbibe without worrying that the good folks from your credit card company will mug you at the end of the month. As for the food— well, it’s more than earned the tidal wave of love, both local and national, that has broken over it since the beginning. Chestnut potage with duck rillettes. Amish chicken all soulful and exciting with sour cherries and mushrooms! If this stuff doesn’t get your sweetie in the mood, I’d consider updating your online dating profile and looking for a new person to spend Valentine’s Day 2014 with. —B.F.

The Erotic Dessert Metaphor

RIM Café, 1127 S. Ninth St. 215.465.3515. rimcafe.com With layer after overflowing layer of warm, decadent gooeyness, RIM Cafe’s award-winning “chocolate volcano” will blow most hot dessert beverages you’ve ever had right out of the water. And what could be more romantic—well, erotic—than an oozing concoction that erupts in your mouth? If the volcano doesn’t send you into a diabetic shock, consider trying one of the café’s badass “Godfather” cannolis or handmade gelato. Heavenly desserts aside, the real reason to go to this holein-wall French chocolate espresso bar is for its eccentric owner, Rene Kobeitri. Known best for his obsession with The Godfather films— which play in the window 24/7—and his infectious catch phrases (“Make it happen!”), Kobeitri insists that patrons stand and witness as he skillfully crafts their chocolatey potions, which is an experience in itself. Valentine’s Day also just so happens to be his favorite holiday: Adding to the already rather eclectic vibe, Kobeitri literally covers the place in festive décor. Oh, and at some point, you and your significant other are probably going to be forced to take kissy photos during an impromptu photo shoot. See, he’s also an amateur photographer— and a master of love. —Nicole Finkbiner n

No Band-Aid for This Problem

Gov. Corbett says no to expanding government health insurance in Pennsylvania. By Randy LoBasso // rlobasso@philadelphiaweekly.com

fter months of dodging questions with regard to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act’s Medicaid expansion—which would add about 500,000 Pennsylvanians onto the state Medicaid health care program for the poor—Gov. Corbett finally announced his decision this week during his 2013-2014 budget address. The answer: a big, fat no. “Washington needs to stop treating Medicaid as a one-size-fits-all mandate and start granting states true flexibility to successfully reform and build a system that works for them,” Corbett said. “I want to be clear, I firmly believe we can serve more of our citizens in Pennsylvania, but only if we are given the independence and flexibility to do so . . . As governor, I will continue to work toward policies that will provide Pennsylvanians greater access to quality care and coverage.” He noted that he wrote a letter to U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, saying: “At this time, without serious reforms, it would be financially unsustainable for Pennsylvania taxpayers, and I cannot recommend a dramatic Medicaid expansion.” The fact that Corbett, a budget-slashing privatization connoisseur, rejected the option to expand Medicaid in Pennsylvania isn’t a shock. Except it also sort of is. Especially since he’s billed himself as a business-oriented politician. And his rejection will likely put a serious crimp in Pennsylvania hospitals’ business. As we’ve explained before, the Medicaid expansion would open up the government health care program to individuals who make as “much” as $15,302 per year and, for a family of four, $31,155 per year. We know, that’s not a lot of money, but it beats the current Medicaid maximum of about $11,000 per year. The federal government plans to fund this coverage expansion by cutting the Disproportionate Share Payments (DSH) for hospitals, which is the money the federal government uses to compensate hospitals when they provide emergency care for patients without health insurance—which they do, because as former President George Bush once said, “After all, you just go to an emergency room!”

Yeah, well, not for long. Pennsylvania has been receiving about $500 million dollars per year in DSH payments ($561,847,754 in fiscal year 2011, alone, according to the State Health Access Assistance Center), and now it will receive nothing. Problem is, with Corbett rejecting the Medicaid expansion, many of those who have been going to the emergency room without health insurance will continue not to have it—but the hospitals won’t get compensated for those services anymore. “I’m very disappointed,” says state Sen. Vincent Hughes (D-Philadelphia). “It’s a huge missed opportunity. We’ve blown the largest infusion of new money into the state’s economy in years.” On Jan. 24, Hughes hosted a roundtable forum in City Hall, where it was noted that the Medicaid expansion would infuse about $4 billion into Pennsylvania’s annual budget each year—and create an estimated 285,000 medical-sector jobs over the next decade. “He could have taken the savings plus the growth numbers,” says Hughes, “and used it to do some other creative things in his budget to respond, truly, to where the people are in Pennsylvania. But he’s going in a different direction, and I’m very disappointed.” Unlike Corbett, five GOP governors nationwide so far have accepted the expansion (as have 15 Democratic governors). Hughes notes he will continue to attempt to convince Corbett to reverse that decision, and will be in touch with Sebelius himself. The state chapter of Americans For Prosperity, a Koch Brothers-funded libertarian group, heralded the decision. “I applaud the governor’s decision to join the list of states choosing not to expand the Medicaid program,” said Jennifer Stefano, the group’s state director. “I call on our state legislators to do the same. Those enrolled in Medicaid have worse health outcomes than patients that have no health insurance at all.” The governor did not offer a plan to make up this money, other than to call us the “hardest-working people in the world”— perhaps implying, therefore, that we will all find awesome jobs and get health insurance through our work? It’s hard to tell. Expanding Medicaid may not be the best option in the world, but the effects of doing nothing sound a whole lot worse. 

FOOD & DRINK

The Perfect Pairing

Chef David Ansill and Bar Ferdinand are a remarkable couple, the jamon and sherry of downtown dining. By Brian Freedman // bfreedman@philadelphiaweekly.com avid Ansill can tell you some stories. He has been a fixture in the Philly food scene for a long time now, and his path has been rather circuitous, from the ground-shifting impact of Pif, the hit-then-slow-decline of Ansill, a brief stint catering followed by his years at Ladder 15, off to Jamaica and now, finally, at Bar Ferdinand, where he seems to once again have found a venue that allows the full range of his formidable talents to shine through. What first might seem like a strange match—a chef whose efforts were often influenced by the great culinary traditions of France, now at a tapas-centric Spanish spot—actually makes perfect sense. The inherently soulful flavors of Spanish food throughout the many regions of that country play right into his proverbial wheelhouse, and the tension between authentically rustic flavors and the more avant-garde techniques that have given Spain’s own restaurants such violin-string tension are perfect for the team he’s surrounded himself with, including talented sous chefs Aila DeVowe and Elijah Milligan. The result of all this is a revitalized restaurant that provides Ansill with the perfect space to express and experiment and, as nearly a dozen and a half recent dishes clearly showed, to win over a fickly Philly dining public. This is on clearest display in his tasting menu, a progression of seven dishes that handily encapsulates so much of the joy of Spanish dining in general and of his food in particular. A recent menu started with a single deep-cupped oyster—the magnificently named Shoregasm— anointed with a spiced apple granita. It worked as an hors d’oeuvre, a warm-up lap and a palate-cleanser all at once, and was swiftly followed by house-cured salmon. Three velvety slices, subtle with the aromas of soft herbs like mint, basil, dill and cilantro, were each wrapped around a spray of pea shoots exploding from their ends like cartoon contrails on an animated comet. The accompanying horseradish crema was a nice traditional touch, if not a terribly necessary one. The next course, however, was one of the wholly unexpected stars of the tasting menu, a dish that I’ll be thinking about for weeks: A hard-cooked egg that, with its delicate paste of a yolk in the center, the draping of meaty white anchovies

(re-marinated in-house with the addition of chili pepper and lemon zest), shaved dried tuna mojama and base of pureed oil-poached tuna, was turned into a two-bite delivery system for umami. The micro-greens on top were attractive, but unnecessary. No matter: The first bite rendered any precious-greens quibbles moot anyway. Tender duck prosciutto with red-winecooked pears tasted of dark spices and game. Oxtail luxuriated in a pearl-onion agrodolce dotted with roasted cloves of garlic and given a Curtis Mayfield sense of soul from Ansill’s magnificent homemade demi-glace. The aptly named

opposed to a spicy tomato-y sauce. And as much as I enjoyed the jamon flatbread with its oozing egg yolk and garlic oil, it had a hard time holding a candle to many of the other dishes. Still, with the impending installation of a woodburning pizza oven, I’m looking forward to seeing how they evolve. (Ansill also told me during our phone interview that the oven will be used for expanding the large-plate offerings, and that the freedup space at the sauté station will allow his team to expand the paella program.) Desserts run the gamut from the more outré—excellent, almost honeyed parsnip ice cream with coffee salt—to well-

The aptly named “three little pigs” may cause quivers of joy among a certain segment of the city’s more pork-passionate foodies. “three little pigs” may cause quivers of joy among a certain segment of the city’s more pig-passionate foodies, the rail of meaty pork belly given snap from a scattering of crispy pig ears like beautiful non-kosher Fritos, and even further decadence from the puck of fried diced trotter, all that gorgeous, funky richness cooked down into something that melted on the tongue like swine-butter. Not everything, of course, looks forward, and even with the more overtly rustic preparations, this is a kitchen that excels. Pan con tomate, sort of a Spanish riff on garlic bread, is a lovely starter: just grilled slices rubbed with tomatoes and garlic, dusted with salt and crowned with grape-tomato confit. With a manzanilla or a fino from the smart, delicious wine list, it’s a great way to ease into evening. Jamon croquetas, a gooey filling of béchamel and ham protected by a shattering fried shell— call out for a beer or a glass of Cava. So, too, do the bacon and date empanadas, the balance between sweet and smoky both delicate and delicious. Patatas bravas were a workhorse winner, but would have been better had the romesco, devoid of the necessary almonds, actually been a romesco, as

wrought riffs on classics like perfectly fried churros. The entirety of the experience, really, is a testament to the rejuvenating powers that a great chef can have on a restaurant that’s been around a while, and on the inspiration that an established restaurant’s concept can have on a great chef. Ansill and Bar Ferdinand are a remarkable pairing, the jamon and sherry of downtown dining. I’m happy for both of them, and hungry for another visit. 

FOOD & DRINK // FORKING STUPID

Flying Solo After weeks spent under the tutelage of Philly’s fine chefs, Nicole finally tries to cook this stuff at home. By Nicole Finkbiner // nfinkbiner@philadelphiaweekly.com PASTA CON LE ZUCCHE FINK’S ZUCCHINI FETTUCCINI Cost: $15 approx. Stress Level: Low-medium Time: 15 minutes

ell, folks, it’s now been four months since I first embarked on my journey of culinary enlightenment. In that time, several of the city’s finest chefs have been kind enough to let me inside their kitchens and teach me, an inveterate candy-for-dinner eater, how to cook a relatively easy and inexpensive meal. The question is, how much have I actually learned? That’s what I hoped to find out this week as I headed into my own kitchen and attempted to recreate two of my favorite dishes from the column thus far: Le Virtu’s pasta con le zucche and El Rey’s chicken enchiladas. Hopefully, I thought, by documenting my own trial and error while cooking, I could offer a little enlightenment to other inept home cookers out there. Although, it appears I still have a long journey ahead. CHICKEN ENCHILADAS Cost: $20 (approx.) Stress Level: High Time: 2 hours Challenge #1: Shopping for all the ingredients. Although I happen to live a five-minute walk from the Italian Market and the dozen or so nearby bodegas, since I was going to be making a trip to Walmart anyway, I figured I’d look there first for the Chihuahua cheese, crema, queso fresco, chicken and tortillas. In hindsight, this wasn’t the smartest decision—but it did teach me a valuable lesson about the culinary sacrifices often made when attempting to save a little bit of time and money. Aside from having to buy twice the amount of crema and quesco fresco I actually needed, I also had to settle for a 30-pack of corn tortillas that were smaller and thinner than the ones Chef Dionicio Jimenez used. No biggie, I thought. I’ll just have to make my enchiladas smaller. Over at the Italian Market, it took me less than five minutes to find all the vegetables—yet, once again, I wound up going home with far more than necessary: I may have confused five “cloves” of garlic with five “bulbs” and two “bunches” of cilantro with two “bushels.” The only truly elusive item on my grocery list was the Chihuahua cheese: Four bodegas and three Italian cheese/meat shops later, still no Chihuahua. NOOOO!!! Challenge #2: Remaining calm. Having offered to make dinner for everyone in my house, I was under a bit of pressure. Not only did I want to deliver an appetizing meal, but I soon found myself racing against the clock. The preparation stage alone took about an hour, largely thanks to the wheel of queso that I had to shred one small sliver at a time and the two pounds of tomatillos, which, it turns out, are covered in a sticky film and therefore a huge pain in the ass to peel. Once I got down to cooking, I ran into a few problems with the salsa. First, because I don’t own a professional blender, I was forced to divvy up the cooked veggies and blend them in two separate batches. Then, despite following instructions and blending the salsa with a handful of ice cubes to keep it from turning brown, the mixture was still warm. While waiting for both batches to cool in the fridge, I decided it was time for a margarita break. Challenge #3: Tackling the leftovers. In addition to having made a quart and half of salsa verde, when it all was said and

done, I essentially still had half of everything. Getting rid of it all took four people and five days. With the chicken stock, my roommate made a heavenly soup. With the salsa, another roommate made rice and bean enchiladas. With the cilantro, another roommate made a Mexican pesto/cilantro mush. I myself whipped up a stellar late-night snack deep frying the tortillas, sprinkling queso on top and using the salsa as a dip. There is a full bottle of crema still sitting in my fridge if anyone’s interested. Final Verdict: Since there’s four other people willing to back me up, I don’t mind boasting: My salsa verde was just as good as El Rey’s. Thankfully, I heeded Dionicio’s advice and only blended one jalapeno at a time as mine weren’t nearly as mild. And much to my surprise, the combo of crema and queso fresco was so rich and creamy that I didn’t even miss the Chihuahua cheese. Ultimately, though, no amount of salsa or creamy goodness could save the enchiladas from the dry, flaky and overwhelmingly blah tortillas that they were wrapped in. Seriously, paper towels have a better taste and texture. Now I know that all white corn tortillas are not created equal. I’ll be taking all of my future tortilla business to a bodega.

Challenge #1: Remembering what the hell a zucchini looks like. Weaving through the endless produce stands in the Italian Market, I kinda felt like I was trying to hunt down Waldo, except instead of a sea of red-and-white striped shirts, I was wading through a sea of oddly shaped green vegetables. It turns out, there was no baby green zucchini to find. All they had were full-grown mama zucchinis. Oh, and you can just forget about finding zucchini flowers in the dead of winter. Challenge #2: “What type of pasta do you want?” It was like déjà vu. While this time I at least understood the difference between fresh and dried pasta, it still didn’t occur to me that I was going to have to specify a particular “style.” What do you call a few flat slabs of pasta? I proceeded to give the cashier the same dumbfounded look that I gave Chef Joe Cicala when he first asked me this question, until she directed me to their menu. Rather than trying to explain what I actually needed— or simply ordering lasagna because it was the closest thing— now that I was suddenly being given options, I decided to consider them. I wasn’t sure if a thinner style of pasta would alter the recipe in any way, but I did know that it meant less time cutting perfect “obtuse quadrilaterals.” And so, after three awkward minutes of silence at the register, I finally responded: “Fettuccini!” Challenge #3: Actually cutting the zucchini. I really had no idea what to do with the thing. I just hacked off the ends, cut it in half then experimented with a few different cutting techniques in order to achieve the thinnest slices possible. Having loved the harmonious texture of the original dish, my logic was, the thinner the slice, the softer they’ll get. Challenge 4: Knowing when to stop. I was able to sync the individual steps almost exactly up until the end. Though the pasta was done in three minutes flat, the zucchini appeared unchanged. I guess I was expecting it to brown, because I continued to let it sauté for far longer than instructed. At the same time, I couldn’t judge whether the sauce was an ideal consistency, so I just kept adding more pasta water and cheese to the pan. I eventually called it quits when the pasta started getting cold. Final Verdict: Not too shabby for my first attempt, but the dish definitely didn’t elicit the same sort of enthusiasm as it did before (“It tasted like summer. In Italy. On a gondola. Wearing a fedora. Having sex.”) Just as I feared, the zucchini slices were quite pronounced in the pile of super-soft, amazing fettuccini. Also, despite having added extra zucchini, garlic and cheese, my version still seemed to be lacking in the flavor department. Perhaps I underestimated the importance of the zucchini flowers. Or perhaps Le Virtu’s olive oil and parmigiano reggiano were simply a far better quality. I think I’m just going to blame my dish’s shortcomings on my complete lack of Italian blood and the stupid mama zucchini.  Find all the dishes Nicole has learned from Philly chefs so far, online at forkingstupid.com.

ary Martello began acting at seven. Fifty years later, she’s just completed what may have been the finest performance of her career: playing the cruel, desperate Mag in Lantern Theater’s scintillating staging of The Beauty Queen of Leenane. Its production—the latest triumph for Martello, who’s been nominated for an astounding 16 Barrymore awards over the years, winning five—has been extended through Feb. 10, but it’ll continue without Martello, as she’s due to perform in Vincent in Brixton at the Walnut Street Theatre beginning Feb. 19. Before arriving in Philly, Martello had already made a name for herself, spending seven seasons at Princeton’s prestigious McCarter Theatre when it employed a company of performers—the sort of steady work an actor dreams of. However, when the McCarter hired Emily Mann as its artistic director, she chose to use primarily Broadway veterans, leaving Martello without steady employment. Luckily, Philadelphia theater was just beginning to take off, and in 1997, she landed a key role in Walnut Street Theatre’s musical Blood Brothers, the sort of highprofile show that allowed her to be seen. “Since (Blood Brothers), it’s been pretty steady, in terms of getting work,” Martello says, knocking on wood. “In Philadelphia, I really came into my own and began to discover my strengths as a performer. For instance, at the age of 45, I realized I could be funny on stage.” That was evidenced by her hilarious performance alongside Fran Prisco in the Walnut’s 2009 production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. An accomplished singer, Martello is comfortable performing in a wide variety of

theater, equally at home singing the songs of Sondheim as she is performing Shakespeare’s prose. Her first four Barrymore wins were for roles in musical theater, but in October, Martello won her first Barrymore for a dramatic role, capturing the award for outstanding leading actress in a play for her fantastic performance as a lesbian mother in the Wilma Theater’s Body Awareness. To what does she attribute her success? “I quit trying to be pretty,” she says. “I began to accept that whatever I had was what I had to offer.” The fact that Martello makes a living as an actress in Philadelphia underscores not only her immense talent, but the growth of the city’s theater community. “Now that so many companies have taken off, in terms of their popularity, there are just a lot more opportunities for roles,” she says. And unlike in film, which favors young actors, Martello says that in theater, there are still plenty of parts for veteran performers—especially women—provided they’re comfortable in their own skin. “You have to realize you’re not 45 anymore and that you’re going to be playing grandmothers and at times supporting roles.” The character she plays in Beauty Queen is 70, and later this season, she’s set to play a wheelchair-bound grandmother in the Arden Theatre Company’s A Little Night Music. Her advice for young actors hoping for a professional career on stage? “Work as much as you can,” she says. “Whether it is community theater, a college production or an extra in a large show, just get on stage. That’s how you really learn: by doing it and watching other people. And stealing what the good actors do.” 

Three Times a Lady

Manon de Boer’s trilogy of biographies explores not only the surface of things, but how things surface. By Katherine Rochester // krochester@philadelphiaweekly.com anon de Boer: Resonating Surfaces— A Trilogy, part of the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Live Cinema series, presents videos in which imperfect memories form the basis for three idiosyncratic biographies. The Brussels-based, India-born De Boer digs deep by going wide: Pairing sweeping urban panoramas with intimate voiceovers, she reconfigures the typical relationship between subject, language and image, challenging the conventions of documentary filmmaking while crafting highly poetic portraits of three creative women. Sylvia Kristel-Paris (2003) features the Dutch star of the 1974 softcore French cult classic, Emmanuelle. As Kristel reminisces about her acting career, her various romances and her two marriages, we hear only her voice. The camera pointedly avoids her well-known body. Instead, de Boer films the surfaces of Paris. As if aware of the camera’s superficial sweep, Kristel reflects: “My stories always seem to lack depth ... from one guy to another, from film to film.” Although set in Sao Paulo, Resonating Surfaces (2005) also situates Paris as the site of a sexual and intellectual awakening. The video revolves around the memories of Suely Rolnik, a radical dissident who fled to Paris, where she fell in love with philosopher Gilles Deleuze. He was breaking new ground in post-structural theory; she was struggling to address the trauma she’d experienced in Brazil. Deleuze suggested she research the death cries of female characters in two Austrian operas as a way of working indirectly through her own pain. The film opens with these soaring arias, and by the end, the timbre of Rolnik’s narrating voice has

effectively replaced them. If the first two films form a pair, then Think About Wood, Think About Metal (2011), starring avant-garde percussionist Robyn Schulkowsky, is a bit of an interloper. It’s in English, while the other two are in French; it features tight, interior shots, whereas the other two favor vast cityscapes, and Schulkowsky’s bright American voice keeps her love affairs to herself. And yet, the intimacy achieved through the confessional tone of Sylvia Kristel and Resonating Surfaces is transmuted here through Schulkowsky’s body. De Boer gives us a closeup of Schulkowsky’s fingers drumming a piece of metal. We see every quiver and caress as she coaxes unlikely objects to sing through a flurry of feathery taps. Like sign language to the uninitiated, it’s a dazzling physical feat, pregnant with secret meaning. Indeed, just as both Kristel’s and Rolnik’s French is laced with the slightest hint of a foreign accent, Schulkowsky’s English is rendered strange by the alien staccato of her homemade instruments. In this way, the trilogy explores not only the surface of things, but also how things surface—how languages, landscapes and noises not native to us may nevertheless become indivisible from who we are, and how once they’ve taken root, each continues to keen in its own particular pitch.  Through May 5. MUSIC

Bilal’s Back, Better Than Before The one-of-a-kind singer returns with A Love Surreal, his style still supreme and his fearlessness intact. By Michael Gonzales // feedback@philadelphiaweekly.com mbition. It’s what separated John Coltrane from horn-blowing posers, Muhammad Ali from around-the-way chumps and Philadelphia-born recording artist Bilal from most of his soulful contemporaries on the Billboard charts. Yet, that same ambition could, like Bilal, get you labeled a phony by fans and dropped from your record label, as they refused to understand the big picture of his artistic temperament. “I have a very punk rock approach to making music,” Bilal says. “This simply means there is no one way of doing things. With my music, I’m always searching for the artful possibilities.” Sitting in the conference room of his newest label, eOne Music, clad in jeans and sneakers, the 33-year-old has just played a few tracks from his upcoming third release A Love Surreal, which he’s premiering at World Cafe Live next week. Featuring the catchy light jazz (inspired by Weather Report) of the first single “Back to Love,” the Surreal concept began to blossom in Bilal’s brain after viewing a 2005 Salvador Dali exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. “Dali’s work, when you look at it, has many different layers; it’s almost three dimensional,” says Bilal. “I thought, Man, I’d love to make music like that.” Drawing on that visual inspiration, as well as various recordings by Heatwave, Steely Dan, Frank Sinatra and J Dilla, he collected his crew and headed to Studio Pine to record some songs. “It’s like when Spike Lee makes a film with the same people all the time, but each movie is different,” pianist Robert Glasper explains. “Well, that’s how Bilal makes music.” As a part of Bilal’s cast of musical characters, Glasper met the singer on their first day of college in 1999 at the New School in New York City. He’s played on each of the singer’s albums, including the unreleased 2006 gem Love for Sale. On A Love Surreal, the two did a song called “Butterfly,” a duet featuring just voice and piano. “With Bilal, his ideas just get wilder. He doesn’t want to be labeled as ‘the soul guy.’ Even when we were in school, he was notorious for messing with people musically.” Drummer, producer and engineer Steve McKie, who opened the Philly-based Studio Pine in 2008, has been down with the crew since 2004. Coming off the moderate success of his 2001 debut 1st Born Second, Bilal recruited McKie to join the crew at Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village. This was at the height of the Soulquarian’s heyday, led by Bilal’s homie Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson, and

D’Angelo, Erykah Badu and Common were also working at Hendrix’s former digs. “Before I joined his band, I was a safe musician who played in a certain ways,” says McKie, who recorded Bilal’s critically acclaimed 2010 album Airtight’s Revenge at Studio Pine. “But, after working with Bilal, I was trying to find different drum sounds, different vibes and just began experimenting much more. We’re always in the studio.”

Bilal Sayeed Oliver was raised in Germantown by a Baptist mother, who had him singing in the church choir when he was four, and a Muslim father, who sometimes took him to local jazz clubs. Sitting next to the cigarette machine in the back of a smoky room, the child clearly saw his future. “I would watch people do their gigs, and that’s what really inspired me. Everybody was dressed so hip. They looked like their

job was so fun,” he laughs. “Chill all day long, then wake up, do a performance, and then go back home.” Once he began classes at the Philadelphia High School for Creative Performing Arts, Bilal realized that if he wanted to be taken seriously as an artist, he’d have to do more than look good in his clothes. “I never hung out with other singers; I just wanted to be with the musicians,” Bilal says. “Yet, most of the musicians thought singers were idiots because most didn’t know music that well. In order to hang with them, I had to learn the chords, theory and the way they spoke. By senior year, I was the jazz band vocalist and arranger. I would arrange the instrumental tunes and do the horn charts. I had developed a real understanding of music. One of the things I got from jazz is there are no wrong notes; it’s just the way you view it. You just keep moving forward in the flow, and if you keep your eyes open, you can see the beauty.” Signed to Interscope Records in 2000 after industry buzz boomed following his performance of the Prince classic “International Lover” at a 1999 tribute concert in Brooklyn, Bilal and the label were at odds from the very beginning of his short stint. “The demos for 1st Born Second were all alternative rock, but the label wasn’t feeling that direction,” Glasper recalls. In 2006, when presented with his Love for Sale, the label shelved the record and dropped him. “That record sounded like what Andre 3000 did a few years later on The Love Below,” says Glasper. “Bilal was just ahead of his time.” Taking the same attitude to the stage, Bilal soon got the reputation of being an erratic performer. “People might’ve thought I was on drugs or intoxicated, but that wasn’t it,” Bilal shrugs. “I just didn’t give a fuck because I was looking for the art. I wanted to be out, like when John Coltrane started playing with his wife, Alice. I just wanted to rip open music with my voice.” Seven years after the Interscope fiasco, Bilal, now a married father with three sons, is still a relevant force, much more in control of his life and music. He seems happier these days. And after reveling in the excellence that is A Love Surreal, it’s safe to say, the brother’s lost none of his ambition.  Wed., Feb. 13, 8pm. $20-$38. SCREEN

SIX PACK Six Directors Who Prematurely Retired By Matt Prigge // mprigge@philadelphiaweekly.com Tod Browning: It wasn’t only silent actors who faltered while adjusting to sound; directors, too, found assimilation shaky. A carnival hound and vaudevilleist, Browning parlayed a gift for sleazy entertainment into a career helming great horrors, some with Lon Chaney, like The Unholy Three. He was less in control with sound: Dracula, his most famous film, isn’t him at his best, while Freaks—so scandalous, it nearly destroyed his career—is. He worked sporadically till the end of the ‘30s, then kicked back in Malibu for his remaining two decades, delighting especially in watching contestants faint at dance marathons. Dorothy Arzner: The lone female Hollywood filmmaker of the 1930s, Arzner’s films—including 1929’s The Wild Party, Clara Bow’s first talkie, and 1933’s Christopher Strong, with an Amelia Earhart-ish Katherine Hepburn—thrived in the Pre-Code era. She worked till 1943 then mysteriously stopped, at only 45, with four decades left on earth. Ingmar Bergman: Fanny and Alexander (1982), Bergman’s farewell to cinema, of course wasn’t. Two years later, his TV film After the Rehearsal was theatrically released. In 2003 came his actual swan song: Saraband, his bittersweet sequel to the brittle Scenes from a Marriage.

>> Richard Lester (right), with Paul McCartney

Richard Lester: Far more than A Hard Day’s Night, the terminally underrated Philadelphia native also has The Knack, How I Won the War, Petulia, Juggernaut, etc.—bemused, skeptical looks at humanity that knock the pompous down to earth. Lester is skeptical of Lester, too: After the death of friend Roy Kinnear on the set of The Return of the Musketeers, he called it quits, at only 57. Unfailingly modest and self-effacing, Lester rarely does interviews, nor takes part in retrospectives, and can barely be shaken by those—like Steven Soderbergh, who interviewed him in his book Getting Away With It—who point out his brilliance. Béla Tarr: For years, it was difficult to see the uncompromising work of Hungary’s bleakest miserablist. Once it was easy to see the 7-½ hour Sátántangó, he was winding down. Tarr, now 57, announced the singlemindedly bleak The Turin Horse was his last, claiming he had said all he could. Steven Soderbergh: Like many, we will semi-delusionally hold onto intimations that one of cinema’s greatest— understandably burned out on an art and business in which he’s excelled—will one day return. 

Side Effects May Induce Nausea A mismatch of screenplay and filmmaker, Steven Soderbergh’s supposedly-final farewell doesn’t do his career justice. By Sean Burns // sburns@philadelphiaweekly.com is 25th theatrical feature in just 24 years behind the camera, Side Effects is supposedly Steven Soderbergh’s “final” film. The big-brained auteur has been staggeringly prolific as of late, making a movie every few months since he discovered digital video, experimenting with form and technique to his heart’s content. Reports of Soderbergh’s self-imposed “retirement” at the age of 50 have been rampant in the press, but those of us who value the filmmaker’s restless, inquisitive spirit wonder how long he will be able to keep himself out of the game. Side Effects is not a good Soderbergh film, and if anything it reeks of this singular talent’s approach to movies as a treadmill, setting formal challenges for himself and grinding them out on a workmanlike basis, more problemsolver than director. A recession drama from the point of view of a porn star? (The Girlfriend Experience) Check. A muckracking expose shot and scored like a ‘60s Blake Edwards comedy with kazoo music? (The Informant!) Check. Spalding Gray in his own words, a lowrent DTV thriller starring MMA fighter Gina Carano, and a broadly entertaining summer movie about Channing Tatum’s storied past as a male stripper? Yes, yes, yes. Funny thing is those were all terrific films. But this is hardly the note I wanted to see Soderbergh go out on. Written by his frequent collaborator (and everything in Steven Soderbergh’s universe seems to be frequent) Scott Z. Burns, Side Effects begins as a bruising interrogation of the pharmaceutical industry before taking a sharp left hairpin turn into abject stupidity. It’s the kind of glossy hokum that, in the ‘90s, would have starred Ashley Judd; in the ‘80s, Michael Douglas. Where’s Adrian Lyne when you need him? Rooney Mara, who seems to have cornered the market on mentally unstable sex kittens after headlining David Fincher’s entirely unnecessary The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo remake, stars as a clinically depressed housewife eagerly awaiting her stockbroker husband’s return from prison on insider trading charges (Tatum again). She cries every day and attempts suicide a couple of times, until her overworked shrink

The good wife: Rooney Mara (above) plays the clinically depressed spouse of Channing Tatum in the twist-laden Side Effects, directed by Steven Soderbergh.

(Jude Law) suggests Ablixa, a so-called miracle anti-depressant with uncharted side effects, hence the title. Much ado has been made of the movie’s surprise twist that angles for Psycho proportions, and the dopey pre-release hoo-hah plays up our Internet culture’s aversion to anything remotely spoilerific. (“Nobody will be admitted into the auditorium after the film begins.” Thanks, Alfred.) But the problem is that after a promising setup, Side Effects abruptly abandons the timely Big Pharma subject matter and settles into the well-worn rut of a Reagan-era routine sex thriller. Soderbergh freely admits that his cinematic touchstones here were Jagged Edge and Fatal Attraction. Having grown up on that crap, I wish he’d aimed higher. The casting is also problematic. Law—who managed to be even more evil than a virus that wiped out most of humanity in Soderbergh and Burns’ most recent collaboration Contagion— stars here in the put-upon, threatenedwhite-guy-in-a-suit role that Michael Douglas once built a career around. Law doesn’t have Douglas’ vulnerability, and mostly comes off as a smarmy dick. He’s done some exemplary supporting character work in the past, but Chris Rock was right: Jude Law is not a movie star. If Douglas had played the lead, we would have rooted for him, and he probably would’ve gotten laid a lot more often. I suppose Mara does her best in a role that doesn’t make much sense, throw-

ing herself into emotional extremes even though the movie seldom plays fair and requires her to act the shit out of scenes that we later find out never actually happened. She’s such a compact, achingly vulnerable screen presence, I’m not sure filmmakers have figured out what to do with her just yet. Soderbergh’s dry, analytical sensibility is all wrong for Burns’ junk-food screenplay. Whereas in the past, his clinical remove turned the lowbrow Haywire into a weirdo art film, here he’s just mimicking the work of lesser directors, and too selfconscious to follow the fill tilt-boogie of Burns’ more ludicrous, inherently campy plot reveals. (There’s a gonzo lesbian subplot that Brian DePalma would’ve gone to town with, but Soderbergh’s tongue has yet to find his cheek. He’s too uptight a dude to be remaking Wild Things.) Side Effects is just a clanging bad match between the filmmaker and the material. The screenplay presents problems that can’t be solved by one of the best problem-solvers in the business, and it’s a sorry farewell for such a fiendish workhorse who made my job a lot more pleasurable over these past dozen or so years. 

LUNA THEATER PRESENTS LUNGS Fri., Feb. 1, the Adrienne Theater. lunatheater.org Overall vibe: Wiped clean of artifice, Luna Theatre’s production of Duncan’s Macmillan’s Lungs is a verbose stream-of-consciousness tightrope so cluttered by the anatomy of a life-long love affair that it can only be performed on a barren stage. Most memorable moment: David Raphaely’s vulnerability knocks down the confining wall of words Charlotte Ford constructs around herself by offering bulldozing one-word responses, like “Enormous” and “enormity.” You’ll think, Oh, so this is how these two people operate as a couple. LISA LOEB No Fairy Tale (429 Records) Sounds like: The queen of the nerdy ‘90s’ first adult record in more than eight years isn’t far from her Reality Bites days, but with less grungy angst, more Clueless girl power. Free association: Just think of all the girls in glasses and Doc Martens who’ll love this. For fans of: Liz Phair/Paula Cole/Shawn Colvin/Jewel, Elaine Benes, retro florals. (B.C.)

TEGAN AND SARA Heartthrob (Warner Brothers) Sounds like: The 32-year-old twins from Calgary’s seventh could be their most pop, commercial and accessible—enjoyable way beyond indie-lesbians appeal. Free association: Some whiners might accuse them of going too mainstream. Stop it. For fans of: Ani DiFranco + Beth Orton x Metric/Eisley/Rilo Kiley, indie romance. (B.C.)

THE SPINTO BAND Cool Cocoon (Redeye Label) Sounds like: The fourth from the Delaware dudes, Nick Krill’s quintet, is another delicately pretty batch, full of dreamy, wistful indie folk. Free association: Local love to these guys. How often does Wilmington get love? For fans of: Yo La Tengo/Superchunk/ Pavement x Of Montreal, handclaps & harmony. (B.C.)

JIM JAMES Regions of Light and Sound of God (ATO Records) Sounds like: My Morning Jacket’s frontman and primary songwriter’s first honest-togoodness solo record is an unsurprisingly outstanding piece of music. Free association: After the fantastic Circuital, he must’ve just kept the juices flowing. For fans of: Neil Young x Galaxie 500, Lambchop + Roy Orbison, Louisville, Ky. (B.C.)

>> Alvin Ailey’s Revelations >> RuPaul’s Drag Race

RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE Mondays, 9pm, Logo Captive audience: Fans of cross-dressing, burlesque revues and neverending drama. Moment of truth: It’s strange. The last time I reviewed RuPaul’s Drag Race in this space, I had a gay ol’ time with it. So, why am I not feeling the new, fifth season much? For starters, there are too many damn drag queens this time around! There are 14 contestants this season (with names like Alaska, Detox and—my fave—Penny Tration, the first cast-off ), some of them not so much entertainingly bitchy as just plain bitchy. (There is one narcoleptic drag queen who I’m sure the show will have fun with.) Hopefully, RuPaul herself can keep this divafest delightfully campy with her double-entendre-spitting fierceness. Emmy or phlegmmy: Phlemmy. (Craig D. Lindsey)

HOUSE OF CARDS Currently streaming on Netflix.com Captive audience: Political dramas; people who love watching Kevin Spacey when he’s hammy. Moment of truth: While everyone waits for that new season of Arrested Development to hit Netflix Instant in May, the streaming video service has another original series you can sample. Adapted from a BBC miniseries and produced by David Fincher, this savvy, sinister political drama has Spacey rocking a Southern-fried accent as a congressman who sets a vengeful plan in motion after getting passed over for Secretary of State. Netflix has released the whole season, so you can “binge watch” the entire thing or take in this modern-day Richard III slowly, the way I’m gonna do it. Emmy or phlegmmy: Emmy. (C.D.L.)

THE FOLLOWING Mondays, 9pm, Fox Captive audience: Police-procedural watchers, serial-killer thriller fans; people who can’t get enough of seeing gory shit on network TV. Moment of truth: Fox and Dawson’s Creek creator Kevin Williamson somehow got renowned actor’s actor Kevin Bacon to come to TV and headline this weekly thriller, where he plays a troubled, retired FBI agent who gets brought into an investigation when a killer (James Purefoy) he caught rounds up a cult of followers to do his bidding. While the pilot looked both promising and menacing, I’m uncertain whether they can keep this going on a weekly basis, especially when the serial killers-in-training are more callow than cold-blooded. At least Bacon is around, looking exceptionally pensive. Emmy or phlegmmy: Phlemmy. (C.D.L.)

ALVIN AILEY AMERICAN DANCE THEATER Fri., Feb. 1, the Merriam Theater. alvinailey.org Overall vibe: Alvin Ailey formed his revolutionary troupe in 1958 to combat racial stereotyping that kept blacks out of modern dance companies and, even more notably, to craft and develop an alternative aesthetic. The Merriam’s well-heeled audience was treated to an evening of bold dance styles that mixed contemporary moves with classic ones. Thunderous applause for each work—and even a standing ovation at the end—were the hallmarks of the night. Most memorable moment: Ailey’s classic Revelations, a look through black history with gospel overtones and poignant choreography that includes nods to the black church, New Orleans-style second line dancing, slavery and the overall struggles of African-Americans. Scene stealer: The solo dance Takademe, featuring Michael Francis McBride, was both funny, filled with attitude and superbly performed. Robert Battle’s complex choreography conveyed all the energy, heart, soul, fire and glory that Ailey is known for. (Tonya Pendleton)

SAVAGE LOVE By Dan Savage // mail@savagelove.net I’m a 27-year-old man in a two-year relationship with a 26-year-old woman. My last partner cheated and lied and did some unforgivable things. I wasn’t blameless—I stayed with her long after I realized it wasn’t working—but our relationship did unearth a kink. After I found out about her cheating, I got extremely turned on thinking about it. I never told her. Enter my next girlfriend. We were together a few months before I brought up my kink. She was very accommodating (dirty talk about her cheating, making up stories about cheating) and then, after some months, she admitted that it was something she wanted to try in real life. I said I was OK with it, as long as I had the option to pursue other partners as well. We agreed on some rules and gave it a shot. She set up a date through OKCupid and had sex with someone; I hooked up with an ex. Everything seemed to be turning out great. Then two weeks later, she got drunk and told me she had seen the OKCupid guy again without asking. I was so upset, I nearly broke up with her. Having the guidelines ignored felt like a betrayal. She later admitted to seeing him one other time without talking to me first. Are we going through the normal trip-ups of a newly open relationship? Or are these lies an indication that she can’t be trusted? I feel like it might be hard to find someone else who is into my kink and maybe we’re just having a hard time navigating polyamory. I love my partner, and I want to make this cuckolding thing work if we can. Suck it up or break it off? Confused Upon Cheating Kink Your letter confused me, CUCK. Here’s why: You describe your relationship as open, then as poly, then as a “cuckolding thing.” First things first: Polyamorous relationships and open relationships are two different things. Some poly relationships are open, but many poly relationships are closed—that is, three people (or more) are involved with each other exclusively, i.e., no randoms, no romancing potential fourths, fifths or sixths. The reverse is also true: Not all open relationships are poly. Two people in an open relationship may allow fucking around with other people with the understanding that there will be no dating or— God forbid—falling in love with anyone else. And then there’s cuckolding. The whole “cuckolding thing” is about the female half of a heterosexual couple breaking the rules and then rubbing her partner’s nose in the evidence of her cheating. (Some cuckolds get off on literally having their noses rubbed in the evidence.) Cuckolding is eroticized betrayal, CUCK, and you spent months fantasizing with your girlfriend about being betrayed. All that dirty talk, all those made up stories—remember? But when it came time to turn your fantasies into reality, CUCK, you laid out the rules for what sounds like a fairly standard open-not-poly relationship: She could fuck other people and so could you. Once again, I’m confused: The cuckold in a “cuckolding thing” typically doesn’t get to fuck around. He gets fucked around on. If your discussions with your girlfriend were as confusing as your letter, CUCK, it’s possible that she was likewise confused. It’s possible that she thought the rules applied to you and not to her. It’s possible that she figured she was free to break the rules because betrayal turned you on. Now she knows that betrayal turns you on as a fantasy and not a reality.

I’m giving your girlfriend the benefit of the doubt here, CUCK, but seeing as you love her and want to make this work, and seeing as girlfriends who are open to cuckolding are hard to come by, on and in, I think you should give her the benefit of the doubt, too. Time will tell if she’s an honest “cheater” who can be trusted or a lying cheater who must be dumped. I’m a guy who can’t orgasm during oral sex. I can during vaginal. It’s frustrating, as I can see it bothers my girlfriend. But while I get close, I don’t quite reach the apex of that hill. I suspect it’s a control issue. During vaginal, I have some level of control—during oral, I don’t. Help. Almost There Maybe it’s not a control issue, AT. Maybe oral doesn’t do it for you—it can’t get you up and over them thar hills—because ... oral doesn’t do it for you. If it were your girlfriend who had difficulty climaxing from oral alone—let’s say she required a vibrator to get her over them thar hills—the standard-issue, sexpositive, lady-empowering advice would be to accept that it’s just the way her pussy works. I would order you to incorporate the vibrator into oral and/ or vaginal sex and not stress out about it. And if you were putting pressure on your girlfriend—if you were making it clear to her that this “inability” to climax from your oral skills alone bothered you, if you were having a sad each time she “failed” to climax during oral—I would slap you around for being an insecure prick. Why shouldn’t the same advice apply here? Vaginal gets you all the way there, oral gets you almost all the way there—maybe that’s just how your dick works. On the off chance there could be a psychological block, AT, experiment with letting her get you almost all the way there and then stroke yourself to get the rest of the way there. Stroke to the point of no return—“orgasmic inevitability”— and then put your dick back in her mouth and blow your load. With time and without sads, AT, you may find the number of strokes you need to get up and over the hill diminishing until you don’t need them at all. Or you may not—because this may be how your dick works. My girlfriend and I are having sex on a not-so-every day basis, but that doesn’t matter anyways. The thing is, I’ve been lasting longer and longer every time we do have sex. However, she can’t last as long as I can, and eventually we’ll start having to use lube, and then maybe 30 minutes later, it’ll start to hurt more, as if I’m “tearing” her or something. I’m left “blue balled” for fear of hurting her further, and she feels bad for not having me finish. What do I do? Fake it or just use copious amounts of lube? Bluer And Bluer Balls Who says you can’t finish? If it’s taking you forever, and your girlfriend’s pussy is giving out, pull out and stroke yourself until you finish. You could also incorporate strategic stroke breaks into your fuck sessions, BABB, to get you closer to the edge and give her pussy a rest. And you might find she’s able to last longer if you engage in a little midplay— think foreplay, but halfway through—during those stroke breaks: Make out while you stroke yourself, eat her pussy, play with her clit. I bet your girlfriend will need less lube if she’s less bored and/or more turned on during those epic fuck sessions. 
