Feedback Everyone’s A Critic Regarding Nicole Finkbiner’s review of Proof, playing at the Walnut Street Theatre: I want to express my dismay over the awkward and amateurish review of Proof. At a time of tremendous growth in the scope and vitality of Philadelphia theater, it is crucial that theater criticism keep pace by rendering wellwritten and cogent reviews. This review of Proof did not, by any measure, achieve those goals. For starters, the body of the review consists of a plot summary which actually describes the dramatic climax. Any theater critic with a basic understanding of the craft knows this is a no-no. If that wasn’t bad enough, allowing this reviewer to commit the ultimate betrayal of comparing the performance to a movie must surely be called into question.

Let alone the absurdity of comparing a performance that is rehearsed for three weeks and then delivered live to an audience free to choose where to focus their attention, to one that is crafted over months of takes and retakes with the camera lens choosing focus for us. To suggest that a theatergoer download the Netflix version suggests the reviewer is staggeringly oblivious to why people choose live theater over film in the first place.

Within the theater community we continually review and refine our standards for holding Barrymore Award voters accountable to their judgments. In this very active and robust theater region, we must expect the same measure of accountability and skill from those who are publicly critiquing that same work.

Residents blame store clerk’s shooting death on cops’ interrogation tactics.

Following a weekslong manhunt, the Philadelphia Police Department—working in conjunction with the FBI and NYPD—captured 22-year-old fugitive Jorge “J-Rock” Aldea in New York City last Friday. A notorious North Philly thug with a long rap sheet, Aldea was wanted on suspicion of killing rival drug dealer Luis Chevere in November.

Until Tuesday, Aldea was considered the prime suspect in last week’s brazen shooting death of Kensington bodega clerk Reyna Aguirre-Alonso, who apparently witnessed Chevere’s murder outside her store.

However, on Tuesday afternoon, the PPD announced the arrest of Raymond Soto, 20, who is charged with Aguirre-Alonso’s murder. Eliana Vazquez, 19, was also arrested and charged with conspiracy. Both are from North Philly.

According to published reports, Soto is believed to be an associate of Aldea’s. Police declined comment to PW as of press time.

The cops may have her killers, but friends and neighbors of Aguirre-Alonso insist that in the weeks before her death, cops put the 29-year-old’s life at risk by making it obvious to everyone on her violence-plagued Badlands block that she was being questioned as a witness to Chevere’s murder.

Friday afternoon, before news broke of Aldea’s arrest, Mayor Nutter’s press secretary, Mark McDonald, addressed that allegation.

“There are a number of different stories out there,” McDonald told a local newspaper, saying that the idea of blaming the PPD for putting Aguirre-Alonso in danger is “an easy one to grasp, particularly if you don’t like police.”

But those close to Aguirre-Alonso say the idea is easy to grasp because it’s true.

“Fuck Mark McDonald, fuck him. He’s full of shit,” seethes Philly anti-crime activist

Greg Bucceroni, 48, who works with East Division Crime Victim Services.

“I’m not anti-police. I love police. But they mishandled this situation and a woman is dead,” says Bucceroni. “If they had gone there more discreet and they were more caring of her safety, there’s a high probability she’d still be alive today.”

Bucceroni is taking Aguirre-Alonso’s death especially hard because he’s the one who recruited her into the city’s “See Something, Say Something” program.

For the past two years, he’d been coming into her store at the corner of Mutter and Westmoreland streets, commiserating with her about the dealers openly selling heroin, cocaine and other drugs on the corner. A few months ago, Bucceroni encouraged her to report the drug trade to 911. He says she was watching the corner from her apartment above the bodega in November when she saw Chevere get shot.

On MLK Day, a week before her death, Bucceroni says he was outside her store cleaning away some trash when AguirreAlonso whispered to him that the PPD had hauled her in for questioning against her will. “She said the drug dealers thought she was snitching,” says Bucceroni. “She felt uneasy. The cops were going door to door [investigating Chevere’s murder], so everybody’s watching everybody to see who’s saying what. I told her, ‘You gotta be careful.’”

During an emotional prayer vigil for Aguirre-Alonso outside the bodega last Wednesday, two days after she was shot four times in the torso while working at the store, anger was directed at the cops on hand.

“This is your fault!,” an older man with a beret and ponytail barked at officers, who didn’t reply.

Aguirre-Alonso’s close friend “Cookie,” who requested anonymity after claiming to receive threats for talking to the press about her murder, scowled at the cops. “I don’t know why they didn’t protect her,” she fumed. Several others at the vigil complained that the PPD “set her up” or “left her out here to be murdered.”

Early Saturday morning, with the news of Aldea’s arrest already circulating on the block, Cookie returned to her Mutter Street row house—she’d stayed away for a few days out of fear that Aldea, who residents say had long terrorized the area, might come back.

Cookie recalled two occasions in the weeks before Aguirre-Alonso’s death when detectives came to the block to question the store clerk. She says the first time, a royal blue sedan pulled up to the corner in the middle of the day and two white men wearing trenchcoats went into the store to speak to her, in full view of dealers and other residents.

The second time, about three weeks ago, Cookie says the same detectives came to the store at 8 a.m., before it was open, banged on the metal grate, then stood in the middle of the street and yelled up to her apartment.

“She opened the window and they said ‘Ma’am, we need for you to come down here to ask you a few questions,’” Cookie recalls.

“She came downstairs and they told her, very loudly, ‘You have to come with us right now.’ And then they took her away, and everyone on the block saw it.”

Cookie says police brought Aguirre-Alonso back to the bodega about five hours later.

She says Aguirre-Alonso told her that detectives pressured her to identify Aldea as the shooter, but that she couldn’t because she insisted it was too dark to see the shooter’s face.

“I don’t hate the police, but they know what kind of neighborhood this is,” she says.

“Everyone in Philadelphia knows Mutter Street. So why would they pick up somebody in broad daylight, an eyewitness to a murder, and then drop her back here and just leave it like that?”

Last month, PW spoke to Deputy Police Commissioner Richard Ross for a cover story about a new “Start Snitching” campaign, and he insisted the PPD handles witness questioning and cooperation in a delicate manner.

“In some of these environments, you’re not even gonna try to [question them] right there,” Ross said at the time. “You have to kinda slyly sneak somebody a card. We’re not trying to tip off the whole neighborhood.”

But that doesn’t appear to be what hap-

pened with Aguirre-Alonso. Bucceroni says that in the wake of her death, dozens of residents in the neighborhood who were planning to join town-watch groups or participate in other anti-crime programs have told him to forget it.

Rather than give up, though, he’s altering his pitch to “See Something, Say Something on the Down Low.” He’s trying to teach people how to use pre-paid cell phones or anonymous email addresses to report crime without having anything traced back to them. “Don’t use your phone for anything other than 911 calls, because in a major investigation like a homicide, they’ll subpoena phone records and try to figure out who you are,” he advises, adding that people should never give any personal information to 911 operators.

In an ideal world, where there’s an emphasis on witness protection, Bucceroni says that such measures wouldn’t be necessary. “But all [police] wanna do is solve the case, and some of them don’t give two shits about you. Not all of them, but some. But until they decide to protect [witnesses] better, this is what you gotta do.”

Bucceroni’s mildly encouraged by Mayor Nutter’s newly unveiled crime-fighting plan, which promises more funds for witness protection, but he says there’s too much of a disconnect between the Nutter administration and the residents of rough neighborhoods for officials to truly understand why people won’t cooperate with police.

“They talk a whole lot, but they don’t live in that world, they don’t understand the dangers,” says Bucceroni. “I want them to know what every citizen feels. It’s easy when they do the walks [in bad neighborhoods] and there’s 50,000 cops and news cameras around. No—I want you to leave the cameras and the cops and the guns behind, take SEPTA to the location and engage with some of these guys on the corner, and then I want you to feel the anxiety that goes through you on the way back while you’re waiting on that corner at midnight for the bus. Only then will you know the fear these people have, and you’ll understand why we need to protect witnesses.”

Still, Bucceroni believes that the uproar over the circumstances surrounding Aguirre-Alonso’s killing will force improvements in city policy and police procedure regarding witnesses. “It’s unfortunate we have to create change at the cost of someone’s life, but change will come,” he says.

“And if it doesn’t come, then I will motherfuck these guys until it does.” n

Marla Davis-Bellamy, Director, CeaseFire Philadelphia

As a kid growing up in Mt. Airy, Marla Davis-Bellamy remembers watching violence erupt around her. “I remember the gang violence,” she says. “And I remember Sister Falaka Fattah, who took to the streets and brought these young gang members into [her] home. That made the difference.”

Back in the day, Queen Mother Falaka Fattah, mother of U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah, pioneered the personal approach to youth street violence that informs Davis-Bellamy’s work today. Devastated after learning one of her sons was mixed up in a gang, Fattah invited all the troubled young boys from her neighborhood to live with her in her house, which she then converted into an organization for at-risk boys.

“Not to say law enforcement didn’t play a part, but it was … mothers,” says DavisBellamy. “It was the love.”

As director of Temple University’s Center for Health Law, Policy and Practice, Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities and the Philadelphia branch of CeaseFire, Bellamy-Davis also lends a personal perspective to Philly’s fight to get kids to put down the guns. But in a much more organized way.

CeaseFire—founded in Chicago by Dr. Gary Slutkin, a professor of epidemiology who focuses on infectious disease control and reversing epidemics—is a program that views gunfire homicides as a disease that needs professional, evidence-based intervention to stop it from spreading.

The program trains big-brother figures— ex-cons and occasionally, guys who never got caught but have reformed anyway—to be outreach workers and what they call “interrupters.” They embed themselves in neighborhoods, talk to clergy and cornerstore cashiers, locate the troublemakers, hear about beefs and then settle scores by mediating arguments.

“When you hear about the homicide or even the shooting, there’s a whole story behind it,” says Davis-Bellamy. And all we’re doing is counting numbers, not thinking or not knowing the story about … this person’s life.”

Growing up, Davis-Bellamy intended to enter politics. But then she had a random,

haunting revelation. It was 1994, and she was in grad school studying government administration at University of Pennsylvania and interning with state Rep. Dwight Evans.

“There was a concern about violence at that particular time in rural areas of Pennsylvania, and Evans had a program that was looking at this whole notion of school violence, and I began kind of looking at that,” says Davis-Bellamy. At the same time, she had a sideline gig writing doing research for the school district, which was at that time debating the merits of full vs. half-time kindergarten.

As Davis-Bellamy set about interviewing kindergarten teachers, what they said was alarming. “I talked to people who have been teaching 30 years and teachers that were new,” she recalls. “All of them talked about how violent their students were. They talk about kindergarteners years ago being nurturing and kind. Not anymore.”

She began consciously observing violence and its patterns. Then, in 2002, Davis-Bellamy was appointed chief of staff for the Pennsylvania Department of Health. During her six years in Harrisburg, the office began to look at violence as a public health issue. She helped developed a program called the Pennsylvania Injury Reporting and Intervention System. Working out of three hospitals with the highest incidence of gunshot victims—all in North Philly—the program approached gunshot patients while they were still recuperating and intervened by offering counseling services.

When she left office, the program dissolved. But CeaseFire, which she had learned a little bit about while in Harrisburg through then-Gov. Rendell, stuck in her mind. When she got back to Philly, she called them up and asked them what had to be done to bring the program here.

It’s a bright and early Monday morning and a homemade memorial program, the kind printed on a copy machine and folded like a brochure, rests on DavisBellamy’s Temple University office on

North Broad Street. She picks it up off her desk and holds it up in the air.

On the cover is a photo of a smiling young black man named Joseph O’Neil Thomas. Friends called him Joey. He was murdered on Jan. 13 at 19 years old.

“His mother was murdered when he was 4 years old, and so his father was struggling as a single parent,” says Davis-Bellamy. “He just kind of got sucked into the streets.”

Over the weekend, Davis-Bellamy attended his funeral. She looks at the photo, places it back down on her desk and clasps her hands. “He’s our first homicide this year.”

When Davis-Bellamy says “our” first homicide, she does not mean the city of Philadelphia’s, which, as headlines around the country have noted, sustained 32 homicides so far this year. What she means is that Thomas’ murder was the first this year in the second Police Service Area of the 22nd District, the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood. Because of its high homicide rate, that’s where CeaseFire has set up shop for the last six months.

It’s also happens to be the neighborhood where both of Davis-Bellamy’s parents taught school. “My grandparents are from here too,” she says. “So I feel right at home.”

According to Davis-Bellamy, an evaluation of CeaseFire's Chicago neighborhoods conducted by four universities over three years and funded by the U.S. Department of Justice found a 41 to 73 percent drop in shootings and killings in CeaseFire zones; a 16 to 35 percent drop in shootings directly attributable to CeaseFire; and a 100

percent reduction in retaliation murders in five of eight neighborhoods.

In Philly, the pilot program is a barebones operation consisting of four outreach workers working with 51 clients.

Davis-Bellamy is waiting on reports and analysis of CeaseFire’s first six months, but a review of the first-quarter’s efforts is promising, showing a decrease in shootings and homicides from 27 in the preceding quarter to 21, and mediation of more than 30 conflicts that had the potential to escalate to gun violence.

“We’re intervening in the lives of the worst of the worst,” says Davis-Bellamy.

“It’s got to be a shooter, someone in prison. We’re looking for ones that are causing the problem and intervening in their lives.

We’re trying to interrupt the violence that these guys are already engaged in.”

Funding for the program—which requires an estimated $250,000 per year per neighborhood site, depending on the size—runs out June 30. Davis-Bellamy says Mayor Nutter—who just announced a $500,000 fund to dole out rewards on tips leading to the arrest of murderers—is interested and that she is “aggressively” trying to identify funding to sustain the program. “When you think about the investments made in terms of building prisons, you think … ‘Why can’t we do some of this on the front end?’” n

Man of His WURD Al Butler, 900 AM radio host

“I tend to see the glass as half-full and someone’s coming to fill it up real soon,” says Al Butler, host of the “Al B! in the Afternoon” show on 900 AM WURD, before letting out a wry laugh. “Philadelphia challenges that sometimes.”

Smack in the middle of the AM dial— brash sports talk to the left and right-wing attack dogs to the right—the 39-year-old South Philly resident has been a fixture at the “urban talk” station for nearly five years. “The concept of what we do on the show is vital,” says Butler in a resonant voice made for the airwaves.

Butler’s lively, freewheeling call-in show (weekdays from 4-7 p.m.) swings from local and national politics to issues of social justice to entertainment news to relationship advice, depending on his particular mood that day and the stories making headlines in the city. “In this country, there’s a historical sense of being silenced, that people are not listening to us. So to be a person of color and feel like you have a place where not only can you say what you want to say, but people of influence are gonna hear what you have to say, that’s very important,” he says.

Sometimes the topics are bleak: police brutality, street violence and the city’s flailing school district. But the charismatic Butler, a self-described “screaming liberal progressive that doesn’t scream at people” who looks for solutions to problems even while acknowledging difficult realities, has a knack for fostering compelling dialogue with his primarily black audience, and a reputation for maintaining an open mind even while delivering pointed opinions. It’s an approach that’s made him a rising star in Philly talk radio, although he wonders if his relative affability, compared with the legion of rhetorical bomb-throwers elsewhere on the dial, has worked against him.

“I’m not someone who says, ‘This is the way it is, this is how I think about it, and you call in and tell me otherwise you’re going to be wrong,” says Butler. “I’m against that.

I don’t know whether that’s held me back, but fair thinking is a better place to operate from.”

Born in North Carolina, Butler, an only child, moved with his family to Mt. Airy

when he was 5. He says that as a kid he mostly kept to himself in his bedroom, where he’d have long conversations with his G.I. Joes—“I was in my own weird world”— and where radio was his best friend. The KYW ticker tape was his after-school soundtrack, and he was addicted to NPR and broadcasts of Eagles, Sixers and Phillies games.

After graduating from Penn Charter and interested in pursuing a career as a sportscaster, he majored in broadcast journalism at Hampton University, where he called football and basketball games. During one summer in the early ’90s, he interned at Philly AM station WHAT, watching broadcasting legends like Georgie Woods and Johnny Sample do their thing. After college, he worked in Hampton’s sports information department, then got a similar job at the University of Connecticut, “mostly because I was hoping to make contacts over at ESPN,” whose headquarters were based nearby. He also thought about eventually parlaying his sports knowledge and communications skills into a front office job with one of Philly’s sports teams.

But UConn was a disaster. The school reassigned him from the football to the volleyball program, the ESPN thing wasn’t happening, and after 10 months, he lost both his job and his girlfriend of eight years in the span of a week. “If I’d had a dog, it probably would have died,” he laughs.

Butler came back to Philly in the summer of ’99 broke and despondent. But he managed to score a board-op job at WHAT. Eventually, he moved up to full-time producer for Mary Mason and co-hosted shows with Dave Warren, where they’d mix discussions of social and political issues with studio visits from porn stars. Butler finally got his own show in 2005, where he honed his ability to deliver provocative monologues when the phone lines were dead. “I compared the war in Iraq to Vietnam for some time,” he recalls, “and I really took exception to [1210 AM yakker] Michael Smerconish when he went at Ossie Davis pretty hard for his support of Mumia [Abu Jamal].”

But not long into his gig, WHAT was bought and the entire staff let go. Butler

thought his radio career was over. He started applying for PR jobs at state government departments in Harrisburg, “but I didn’t want to put on a suit and take the train out there every day,” he says. Just as his unemployment benefits had run out, he says WURD “pulled me off the trash heap” in 2007.

Since then, Butler hasn’t been shy about charging into some of Philly’s most controversial, hot-button issues. “Whenever I talk about the school district, and whenever I brought up Arlene Ackerman, the phone lines were full for a week,” he says. Butler told his listeners he thought the ex-superintendent was the victim of vicious city politics, but that the bottom line was, “We’ve had five superintendents in 10 years, and now they’re gonna have to implement a new plan and you got a whole ’nother graduating class of kids who didn’t have what they needed from their schools.”

He became aggressive in spotlighting issues of police brutality because “until good police stand up and say, ‘We will not tolerate these kinds of police officers in our ranks,’ then I can’t defend them when these terrible incidents happen.” He’s railed against black-on-black violence, but stops short of endorsing the city’s call for people to step up as witnesses to violent crime.

“Police always say the African-American community needs to come forward but they really don’t protect you when it counts,” says Butler.

Over the past several months, he’s also been an ardent supporter of the Occupy movement, often devoting his show to exploring why blacks have been hesitant to support the cause. “There was a lot of resentment of not being invited to participate,” Butler says of his callers, “and people saying, ‘White people are just on this now?

We’ve been fighting these same battles for decades and now because it’s impacting you, now you care?’ I partially agree with the point, but what I don’t understand is, how is that productive for you going forward? And since when do you need white people’s permission to do anything?”

Occasionally, the show proves disheartening, like when people call in to rail against gay rights, or when “I have a conversation with a caller about some issue in Philly—crime or violence or political BS—and I’ll think, ‘I heard the exact same thing in the room with Georgie Woods in ’92. Nothing changes.’

Most days the work is enlightening and fulfilling, Butler says, but regardless of good or bad calls, he tries to decompress and not think about the show immediately after getting off the air. Ever the sports nut, he watches the NFL Network religiously to clear his head. “I really need the Eagles to get it together, I can’t take another season like last year.”

On the way home most evenings, though, he gets feedback courtesy of the people at the laundromat on his block. “They’re always yelling out, ‘I heard you talkin’ about blah, blah, blah’, ‘That was great!’ or ‘I can’t believe you said that!’” he says. “It’s good to see how the show translates out in the neighborhoods.”

Butler says that most of his callers are 45 and older, but his show is slowly attracting the attention of the coveted 18-35 demographic. He’s tried to appeal to younger audiences by regularly booking upstart thinkers and audacious pundits, like firebrand activist commentator Marc Lamont Hill, who’s 31, or 30-something African studies professors Imani Perry (of Princeton) and Salamishah Tillet (of Penn), who put a fresh face on familiar issues. “They’re brilliant people who can speak to the same issues that some of the older folks have spoken about for decades, and it’s important for people to hear these younger voices and see that they’re people who they would probably hang out with,” says Butler.

Looking ahead, Butler would love to see “Al B! in the Afternoon” get syndicated nationally, but for now he’s happy the show continues to build a following here. “I really like Philly,” he says, “and there’s definitely no shortage of things to talk about.” n

Actor Leslie Odom Jr. can often be found in what he calls the “L.O.J.” zone.

Every morning, he’d appear on set calm, prepared and focused. With a big cup of black coffee in one hand and a script in the other, Odom would leisurely peruse his marked-up script—even though he had already committed the lines to memory.

And the script in question?

Red Tails, the George Lucas-produced box-office hit about the famous Tuskegee Airmen, the all-black fighter-pilot squad in WWII. “The Tuskegee Airmen are legendary,” Odom says. “They overcame hate with excellence. Red Tails inspired me because of this.”

Humble yet self-assured, 30-yearold Odom describes himself as driven, honest and present. He is a professional triple threat as a movie star, TV actor and Broadway performer. Aside from Red Tails, he has a recurring role on the NBC’s Smash (produced by Steven Spielberg), which comes out this month, and a role one of Broadway’s newest productions, Leap of Faith, if scheduling permits. “I’ve only just begun” says Odom, adding that he got to where he is today with “real love” and endless dedication.”

As a boy growing up in Philadelphia, Odom learned theater, dance and singing techniques at Philadanco, the New Freedom Theater and the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts.

He credits the “powerful, beautiful support” he received from his arts teachers for laying the foundation for his success.

At 17 and just a senior in high school, Odom was the youngest person to do the Broadway production of RENT. Throughout his career, he has been seen in guest roles on such prominent shows as Grey’s Anatomy, Supernatural, NCIS: L.A., Vanished, Gilmore Girls, and Threshold, among many others. And that’s to say nothing of his theater experience, which includes Jersey Boys, Being Alive and Once on this Island with Reprise LA!.

The journey, at times, has been rough.

There were many times when Odom wanted to “quit the business” and leave L.A.,

where where he moved after graduating from Carnegie Mellon. “The grind is so ... brutal,” he says. “It can be a lonely journey but I had to pursue this thing with my whole heart. It’s my first love.”

Although he has sacrificed the comforts of a “secure” and “consistent” job, Odom says he had countless friends and family who didn’t want to see him give up.

When Odom visits Philly to guest teach to youth in training at his alma maters, he shares two pieces of advice: “If you don’t have a relationship with God, get one now.

And know what you are willing to sacrifice before you start.” His offers clarity to even the most confused student. He has seen many people in the entertainment business lose themselves because they were willing to do anything to be in the spotlight. “I wouldn’t risk losing a marriage or my deepest friendships. Having loved ones around make makes success that much sweeter.”

Although Odom is excited about his blooming career, he says he’s open to see what else he’s meant to do. He adds that he would consider giving back through teaching at the university level.

“I’m always looking to be fuller, richer, and deeper than I was two years ago. I want to get the most out of myself.” n

Paying it forward has been Donna FrisbyGreenwood’s mission in life since she was a kid. At 15, she started the NAACP Youth Council in her suburban Philly neighborhood. By the time she was 23, she founded her first nonprofit to help urban youth.

Today, as the program director of the Philadelphia office of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Frisby-Greenwood continues to tear down the barriers that make it difficult for communities in need to access funding. “When most people think of foundations, they think of them pairing with only elite institutions. We encourage everyone to apply,” says Frisby-Greenwood.

As the 26th largest foundation in the country, with more than $2 billion in assets, the Knight Foundation differentiates itself from its peers by awarding grants to deserving organizations headed by people from all walks of life, including the formerly homeless and imprisoned. Since joining the foundation in 2010, Frisby-Greenwood is working hard to ensure that Philly is on the receiving end of Knight’s philanthropy, creating forums that enable disenfranchised voices to be heard.

“Since 1970, the foundation has donated $92 million in Philadelphia,” she says. “I am proud that we have over $20 million on the street in Philadelphia now.”

The foundation funds 413 projects that enrich the lives of ordinary Philadelphians, supporting ideas that promote quality journalism, advance media innovation, nurture community engagement and foster the arts.

Frisby-Greenwood, a former teacher, says Knight is working closely with the Free Library of Philadelphia to expand access to broadband technology and digital literacy training beyond the physical library walls.

One of its most popular projects is the “Random Acts of Culture,” which is a series of spontaneous cultural performances in nontraditional settings. Shoppers at Macy’s, along with a million YouTube viewers, were delighted to be treated to a stirring performance of “Hallelujah” by the Opera Company of Philadelphia.

Frisby-Greenwood is excited about the opportunity to change lives with a grant to the Urban Youth Racing School. The stipend will be utilized to expand an e-mentoring program for black youth. “Sports are the hook to attract the kids,” she says.

“We then bring in speakers such as Howard White, manager of the Jordan brand for Nike, CBS sportscaster James Brown, former 76er Darryl Dawkins to talk about what it takes to be successful. Afterward, these wonderful role models will continue to encourage the participants by email via a specially developed platform.”

But of all the foundation’s programs, the closest to Frisby-Greenwood’s heart is

the “Be Me” (BME) challenge, which shines a light on the black men who are making significant contributions to their community.

More than 1,000 men in Philadelphia participated in the challenge; 10 Philadelphians were awarded grants this year. Solomon Jones, a former Daily News columnist who now teaches at Temple, intends to use his award to expand his “Words on the Street” program, which works to increase the literacy of 650 children.

Loraine Ballard Morill, the news and community affairs director at ClearChannel Media and Entertainment, was thrilled to work with the Knight Foundation. “As a veteran of urban radio, we often report negatively on young adults and men in our community, so it was great to be able to highlight the vast majority of men that are making extraordinary and real contributions,” she says.

Before joining the foundation, FrisbyGreenwood enjoyed a career devoted to public service. Working at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development under Secretary Henry Cisneros in 1994, she fought against the proposed law that would take away driver’s licenses from fathers who were late making their child-support payments.

Later that year, she was instrumental in the Clinton administration’s battle to keep Head Start inside the Department of Health and Human Services. Her work there was noticed

by Rock the Vote, which recruited her as director of development. Her efforts there led to the registration of more than a million young voters. But Fisby-Greenwood says her heart belonged to Philly, so she turned down Arnold Schwarznegger’s offer to head his Inner-City Games organization in Los Angeles. After returning to Philly, she married a local business executive. Living in Northern Liberties, she began working at the School District of Philadelphia, where she succeeded in dramatically increasing the number of students taking the PSAT and SAT tests.

But Frisby-Greenwood isn’t into accolades.

She just wants to keep helping others less fortunate. “I count my success by the number of Ph.Ds earned by the youth—who are often from low income neighborhoods—in my programs.” n

If you have no idea what kind of music Warbringer specializes in, checking out the Ventura, Calif.-based band’s record covers should clue you in. Worlds Torn Asunder (2011) shows two skele-angels hovering over a burning orb (probably Earth); ’09’s Waking Nightmares depicts what appears to be hell as weird wooden ruins; and ’08’s War Without End features a giant, spikecovered tank steamrolling over skeletons as nuclear-war-bred demons follow in tow.

Holy fucking metal, Batman. Getting down to stylistic specifics, vocalist John Kevill has characterized Warbringer’s work as a fusion of Bay Area thrash, old death metal and classic heavy metal—“like we could be out of the ’80s but more early ’90s than anything.”

Le Mirage/Dead City Philly Don’t let the name fool you. Local group Sylvia Platypus is no joke—it’s a literate, ambitious group of bohemians with a sly sense of humor. Formed in the spring of 2010, this self-described psycho-Celtic-glam-blues band debuted at an Iggy and the Stooges tribute show where vocalist Janet Bressler belted out “Penetration.” Since then, the singer— finding the confines of the typical pop song too constraining—has been tinkering with a rock opera. Loosely based on a 19th-century novella by Belgian Symbolist Georges Rodenbach, her adaptation transfers the setting from Bruges to Philadelphia. The story concerns a young widower distraught with grief.

After a chance encounter with a woman who resembles his beloved, he becomes obsessed with her double. Throughout, the sextet’s music amplifies or comments on the action.

Highlights include Bressler’s smoky voice and elegant hats and the lead guitar of Bill Barone, who played in the Krautrock band Wallenstein. Charlie Rutan will rock out on the bagpipe and the rarely heard Neapolitan zampogna. Bring your own clove cigarettes.

Flaherty Film Seminar Mounted in honor of Robert Flaherty, the documentary pioneer of Nanook of the North, the

annual Flaherty Film Seminar has, since 1955, summoned cinema’s most faithful to a week of demanding, exciting documentaries and experimental works meant to shatter preconceptions. And every year the coordinators are nice enough to let everyone else see what went down. Selections from last summer’s program, curated by NYU’s Dan Streible, hit Philadelphia over three nights, with Thursday offering the early 1970s computer animation of Lillian Schwartz and Saturday offering the new, retro animation of Jodie Mack. Friday lines up the minimalist docs of Laura Kissel and Tan Pin Pin, whose chronicles of Asia’s working class are similar but different. Tan Pin Pin amasses her city’s street musicians in Singapore Gaga, while Kissel, an American abroad, finds the hypnotic beauty of a Shanghai couple making a quilt in Tan Mian Hua. White Birds Drink Up Buttercup were on a serious roll when they broke up last year. In their three-year run, Buttercup won Pitchfork and Stereogum love, a recording contract with Yep Roc (where they must have been the youngest guys on the roster) and a No. 1 slot for Born and Thrown on a Hook on our own Michael Alan Goldberg’s best of 2010.

Now, three members—James Harvey, Farzad Houshiarnejad and Mike Cammarata—have reconvened as White Birds, a dreamily reverbed, gorgeously harmonized outfit akin to Fleet Foxes. The Secret Cinema: Trailer Trash The Hells Angels motorcycle gang shall be remembered for at least two things. First, while acting as security guards for the Rolling Stones, they put a symbolic end to the “peace and love” thing by unleashing a bit of ultraviolence at 1969’s Altamont Free Concert.

Second, they inspired one of the most absurd/ amazing American movie genres ever: the biker film. Many involve vets returning from Vietnam—misunderstood and angry, the antiheros join gangs and raise hell. In his 1970 film Black Angels, director Laurence Merrick slammed the genre into blaxploitation to achieve an outlaw biker version of Charles Manson’s “Helter Skelter” fantasy. But, before Merrick’s masterpiece screens tonight, there’s

David “Fuze” Fiuczynski Just as Hendrix used Delta blues as a launching pad into space, double-neck guitar maniac David “Fuze” Fiuczynski builds on a jazz-rock foundation and ventures into microtonal musical concepts of Asia and the Middle East. His instantly identifiable sound, on fretted and fretless guitars, has caught the ear of esteemed bandleaders such as Jack DeJohnette, Billy Hart, Muhal Richard Abrams and Rudresh Mahanthappa. This week, with his Screaming Headless Hendrix project—a spinoff of his band Screaming Headless Torsos—Fuze will bring his advanced theoretical system, “Planet MicroJam,” into focus. Slow Southern Steel

RAIN: A Tribute to the Beatles Together longer than the Beatles, RAIN—the next best thing to seeing the Beatles live—is bringing their mop-top haircuts straight from the Broadway stage to display their mastery of every song, gesture and nuance of the Fab Four for Philly. The note-for-note performances are as infectious as they are transporting. est Philly’s Curio Theatre Comp.’s mission of producing challenging, provocative drama continues with its presentation of Eric Simonson’s 90-minute stage adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s anti-war novel, Slaughterhouse-Five. The author of recent Broadway hit Lombardi, Simonson condenses Vonnegut’s historical sci-fi satire into a lean 90 minutes, which is quite a feat when you consider the story constantly changes not only eras and earthly locations but dimensions and even planetary systems. Director Jared Reed (who has experience with non-linear, anti-war satires having helmed Curio’s Catch-22) uses Paul Kuhn’s shifting set and Leigh Mumford’s dynamic lighting design to represent the jangled story’s many settings. A versatile seven-member ensemble featuring several of the area’s top actors are responsible for portraying the 40 odd characters that inhabit Vonnegut’s tale of an optometrist who survives the bombing of Dresden and an unscheduled visit to the strange planet Tralfamadore. From Parlor to iPhone Expanding beyond their October design festival, DesignPhiladelphia has partnered with the University of the Arts to host “Visibly Invisible,” a four-part free lecture series aimed at encouraging people to rethink history, design and technology. First up, from the emergence of consumerism in the Victorian era to the I-want-it-now culture of the new millennium, award-wining design historian Regina Lee Blaszczyk will take you through a tour of 150 years of consumer culture to explore the hidden meanings of the things we use everyday. Technological advancements aside, she aims to show that, ultimately, what connects us to our ancestors is the impulse to personalize our surroundings—while they used “cultural hardware” like furniture and bric-a-brac to express themselves, today we use “cultural software” like eBooks, videogames, Facebook and apps. Resurrect Dead documents the journey of director Jon Foy and his friends as they try

“Country folks can survive,” sang Hank Williams Jr., aka Bocephus. In addition to some real tasty barbeque, they can also make swampy metal music, and it’s about goddamn time someone switched on a videocamera to document the kush-doomy, whiskey-sticky sounds of Southern bands like Eyehategod, Kylesa, Weedeater, Black Tusk and Torche.

That’s what CT, the lead-singer of Arkansas band Rwake, did. His film, Slow Southern Steel, screens tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. The lights will come on after the picture, and then go back down for live sets by Atlanta’s Zoroaster and North Carolina/Virginia three-piece Hail!Hornet. There will be sludge. is like a vegetal freebasing of umami, and just when you think it’ll all be too rich, the prickle of acid and heat from the chilies comes swooping in to clean up.

Grilled cheese embodied the holy trinity of sensations for this Norman Rockwell construct. The bread had been perfectly crisped up in copious amounts of butter, the cheese tucked inside stretched from the teeth with each bite as if performing for a commercial, and the tomatoes, even out of season, brought enough acid to balance out the fattiness.

Quintessential beer food.

There were a few unexpected shortfalls. Much-lauded onion rings, the edges of their batter all lacy and snappy, could have been fried 30 seconds longer, which would have allowed that crispness at the edges to extend all the way to the soggy equator of batter circling thick-cut onions.

With a beer—maybe a draught of Fegley’s Brew slathering of Boursin cheese, overpowering on its own but Works Second Coming, the crisp, easy-drinking EPA from perfect with a chocolatey Bell’s Kalamazoo, its own coffee Bethlehem, Pa.—it’s perfect, and the price can’t be beat. and bitter chocolate notes amping up the meat’s character.

This is where the food at American Sardine Bar is at More than anything, though, what matters most here its most rewarding: as accompaniments to its thoughtful is how well the food works with the real centerpiece, selection of suds, including a broad range both on tap and the real reason most people will likely end up stopping by the bottle. Eating here is a two-faced experience, both forwardlooking and retro, a throwback to a time when comfort trumped detail, but of-the-moment in its occasional willingness to leap-frog convention and play in the sandbox of more modern flavor combinations.

How else to explain the Frosted Flake-crusted and fried PB and J? It’s a dish whose list of ingredients reads like a greatest-hits gathering of American childhood favorites, but it’s certainly not something that most of our mothers would have thought of doing. Or that sardine sandwich, which references a whole range of favorites, from tuna salad to kippered herring on bread.

It’s with the simpler constructs that ASB is at its most charming. Brussels sprouts are straightforwardly conceived and wholly successful, robust half-globes with oyster sauce and tossed with sliced Thai chilies. The result

The Asian Arts Initiative is offering a captivating—and rather damning—look at the evolving portrayal of Asians in American graphic fiction and its impact on contemporary culture. Monsters & Marvels: Unmasking Asian Images in U.S. Comics 1942-1986 features more than four decades of comic books from the collection (the largest of its kind) of science-fiction writer and cultural studies scholar William F. Wu. The exhibit juxtaposes the disturbing historical representations with a library of present-day graphic novels

In his second show at Vox, Portland, Ore.based sculptor and installation artist Erik Geschke gives a mortal twist to an iconic modernist structure. Modeled after Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic dome (think playground climbers), Untitled (Social Engineering) substitutes bones for slats to create a Flintstones-meets-Addams Family jungle gym of doom. Crafted from 65 plastic femur bones cast from human cadavers (Geschke used models sourced from a medical supply company), the 8-feet-wide, 4-feet-tall sculpture treats modernist aspirations with the black humor of hindsight. While the geodesic dome never became the basis for the harmonious community Bucky envisioned, Geschke’s piece blasts past the wistful homage to the dome in order to deliver a vicious condemnation of purported “grand solutions.” (Katherine Rochester) 6-11pm. 1000 Works Project at Gallery 543

Marathoners train for months in order to complete a grueling 26.2-mile run. Milking the trite arts-meets-sports metaphor with impressive results, mixed-media artist Emily Manalo Ruiz embarked on a rigorous training of her own. Inspired by the daily grind of her husband’s marathon prep, Ruiz decided to keep her eyes on the prize and create an artwork every day for six months with a clear goal of 1,000 pieces by project’s end. Comprised of roughly 2-by-3-inch flags sewn from salvaged fabric and hung in a 14-feet-wide, 7-feet-tall grid, with 18 larger flags draped on either side, the heft of Ruiz’s project is no less quantifiable than the miles clocked by an ambitious athlete. Modeled on the patterns of old battle flags, the project connects both to the difficulty of maintaining a steady artistic practice and the naval history of the gallery site itself. (K.R.) 6pm. Cathedral at Tiger Strikes Asteroid

Unlike most artists who find out their exhibition date has been moved up five months, Philadelphia-based artist Matthew Sepielli was delighted: “I like the idea of it being a quiet show,” he says, referring to the exhibit’s tenure in the February drab. Like the winter months themselves, Sepielli’s exhibition of 10 paintings sculpted from white plaster will be dimly lit. Depending on the time of day or night, viewers will peer at these panels with little more than the aid of a single lamp. A looped video of a nighttime walk through a forest echoes the exquisite isolation evoked in the text from which Sepielli’s show takes its cue.

Looking to Raymond Carver’s iconic short story, Cathedral (as well as Jun’ichiro Tanizaki’s In Praise of Shadows), Sepielli carved a single cathedral window into the plaster surface of each painting and hung the panels at a height and distance that suggests a cathedral’s nave. Contemplating these elliptical panels in the winter half-light, you may just notice a single orb making its slow ascent over the snowy surface of the plaster. Like Carver’s story, Sepielli’s Cathedral suggests that after all is said and done, there may be a glimmer of hope. (K.R.) 6-10pm. Six Horror Movies Where the “Filler” is Superior to the Horror

Isle of the Dead (1945): Horror films are intended to scare. So, it’s unusual when some filmmakers, on purpose or by accident, get the formula backward, going light on scares but big on the aspects most of the genre’s perpetrators don’t care about: acting, character development, strong themes, etc. In the case of producer Val Lewton, it was a necessity. RKO Pictures wanted to compete with Universal’s acclaimed horror products (Dracula, Frankenstein, et al.). Trouble is, they didn’t have the money. Starting with Cat People, and continuing with the veiled Jane Eyre adaptation I Walked With a Zombie, Lewton’s films eschewed the horror almost completely, using mood and suggestion to convey what his pictures couldn’t afford. Indeed, it’s almost always downtime in this spooky portrait of people (led by Boris Karloff) dying one-by-one of a plague they think, mistakenly, was caused by a lady vampire.

Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979): Just as his Bad

Lieutenant semi-remake isn’t much of a thriller, Werner Herzog’s remake, of sorts, of the F.W. Murnau classic isn’t much of a horror. Instead it subsists entirely on mood, its dreamlike European setting and the sight of Klaus Kinski as a misshapen, pathetic Count Dracula.

The Changeling (1980): The ghost story at the heart of Peter Medak’s film is no great shakes, but it’s elevated immeasurably by the presence of George C. Scott, playing a man grieving the deaths of his wife and daughter. But then, Scott’s presence seemed to dramatically alter any horror, as witnessed in The Exorcist III—a sequel heavy on procedure and light on pea-soup vomit.

Wendigo (2001): Larry Fessenden has spent a career in lo-fi horror, with films that tackle animal testing (No Telling), addiction (Habit) and the environment (The Last Winter). Here, his regurgitation of a Native-American legend doesn’t exactly frighten.

But it doesn’t have to: it’s got Patricia Clarkson and Jake Weber.

Beasts of the Southern Wild It was all anybody was talking about in line.

See, you wait in line an awful lot at the Sundance Film Festival, and that’s where complete strangers kept approaching me and asking if I’d yet seen Beasts of the Southern Wild. A bona fide overnight sensation, writer-director Benh Zeitlin’s defiantly idiosyncratic debut picture became the toughest ticket in town after its first, rapturously received public screening. Such breathless hype continued for the rest of the fest, to a point where I was already sick to death of hearing about this movie long before I sat down to actually watch it.

Turns out everybody was right, for a change. The phantasmagoric adventures of a defiant, 6-year-old girl named Hushpuppy in the forgotten, ramshackle post-Kartina wreckage of New Orleans unspool as a modern folk tale, dreamlike in their mythological grandeur while simultaneously grounded in earthy humor, surreal interludes and goofball nonsequitors. It’s the damndest thing I’ve seen in awhile, the kind of stubbornly personal vision that reminds you what independent films (and this festival) are supposed to be all about.

Beasts of the Southern Wild winning the Grand Jury Prize was the least surprising thing that happened all week.

Meanwhile, that angsty, 20-something exuberance that made Joachim Trier’s Reprise such a blast of energy has soured into pre-middle-aged despair in his stately, devastating Oslo, August 31st. Trier’s cohort, Anders Danielsen Lie, returns here as a 30-something junkie on a day-long pass from rehab, wandering ghostlike through his old hometown, taking stock of relationships ruined and years wasted. It’s a quiet, truthful film. And so terribly sad.

“This is not a motherfuckin’ sequel to Do The Right Thing,” Spike Lee announced, taking a momentary break from shittalking Tom Brady after the premiere of Red Hook Summer.

Lee reprises his iconic role as pizza deliveryman Mookie (now with a graying beard) for a couple fleeting appearances in this often alarmingly misjudged project, which the director financed out of pocket and shot last summer with the assistance of his NYU students. The gist of it, I guess, is that a spoiled rich kid from Atlanta is forced to spend the summer in a Brooklyn housing project with his fire-and-brimstone preacher grandfather (well-played by The Wire’s Clarke Peters). But since this is a Spike Lee Joint, tangents abound.

Buoyed for awhile by vibrant colors, a few dazzling camera tricks and the kind of blunt, socio-economic discussions missing from too many American films (even at Sundance), Red Hook Summer at first feels like it might be Lee’s Gran Torino,

complete with gawdawful child actors and colorful old codgers. Then along comes a disastrous plot twist that made me want to throw a trash can at the movie screen.

The festival’s actual motherfuckin’ sequel was Julie Delpy’s Two Days In New York, a follow-up to the actress’ loosey-goosey 2007 directorial debut, transplanting Two Days In Paris’ hijinks stateside and jettisoning Delpy’s previous amour, Adam Goldberg, in favor of the much funnier Chris Rock. Second verse, same as the first, with Delpy’s wacky family (her father even plays himself ) causing one crisis after another during a frenetic 48 hours. Rock makes a surprisingly sturdy straight man, seething with exasperation and having imaginary conversations with a cardboard Barack Obama.

I seem to be in the minority regarding Bachelorette, a blisteringly vicious comedy from playwright Leslye Headland, starring Kirsten Dunst, Lizzy Caplan and Isla Fisher as a trio of coked-up bridesmaids seething with resentment on the eve of their fat friend’s wedding. Comparisons to a certain Kristen Wiig blockbuster are bound to be rife, but this is a much nastier piece of work—Bridesmaids by way of Hurlyburly—mining sick laughs from bulimia, suicide attempts and some magnificently creative profanity. Dunst’s Tracy-Flick-On-Blow routine never failed to slay me.

I also quite liked Andrea Arnold’s Wuthering Heights, which sent many audience members streaming for the exits. Eschewing Masterpiece Theatre period tropes, the Fish Tank director chucks most of Emily Bronte’s dialogue,

Bachelorette shooting Heathcliff’s and Catherine’s doomed romance with jagged, visceral immediacy. Arnold can’t quite stick the landing, but the movie’s rawness sticks in your ribs.

The U.S. Dramatic Competition Audience Award went to The Surrogate, which will presumably score every subsequent film festival audience award on its way to next year’s Oscars. Extremely difficult to dislike, even though it’s really not very good, writer-director Ben Lewin’s film stars John Hawkes as Berkley poet Mark O’Brien, who was profiled in 1996’s Academy Award-winning doc, Breathing Lessons.

Confined to an iron lung but aching to lose his virginity, Hawkes’ O’Brien hires a sex therapist played by the frequently nude Helen Hunt.
