BLACK MONDAY It’s been a really bizarre start to the week, Philadelphia.

And sadly, it’s all due to an swirling undercurrent of stereotyping, bigotry and flat out passive aggressive racism serving as culprit.

I’ll start with the story we chased and almost nabbed for this week’s issue. This first one shed light on a a near-mistake by the Bucks County Courier-Times which almost selected a right-wing white supremacist to serve as a member of its reader advisory panel.

How you don’t do at least a light Google on your members before appointing them to a panel is beyond my realm of thought, but hey we’ve all made mistakes, especially yours truly. Only until it was brought to their attention that said Joe Rightwing penned a blog denouncing anyone in some form or another that isn’t of Anglo-Saxon descent did they pull the plug on his seat at the table. @SPRTSWTR I’m not even going to share this dudes blog because he’s honestly he’s not worth bringing attention to, but know that in one of his recent posts, he wrote firmly: “Racial hatred is not going to change and it’s never going away.”

To which, I simply say, ‘yeah, you piece of shit, because of people like you.’

Oh, one more from the files of this guy...

“We can try to get whites to accept blacks by overloading the media, hollywood and the commercial ad business with more and more black actors and more black success stories but it hasn’t worked and it won’t work because people can spot a fraud a mile away, or at least most people can spot the race frauds.”

OK, that’s enough. You get the point.

Long story short is according to that publication – after repeated calls to its editor for comment – said guy has been pulled for selection from its reader advisory board. And in the aftermath of doing so, and since there’s no real story there about some dude with a racist blog – because this is Pennsylvania and there are hundreds of dudes with racist blogs – the story is dead in the water.

Moving on, this next story is the bigger burn in my opinion.

We have a family friend who allowed us to share their story in anonymity because it’s one that’s so outrageous that I begged her to

let me share. She is a successful nurse practitioner at a local hospital, with two boys that attend a predominantly white public school.

Recently, her younger son, just 8-years-old, reacted negatively to an event that happened in the lunchroom. The way it was explained was that due to food allergies he was unable to take part in a meal with the rest of his friends and was segregated to another lunch table.

Feeling ostracized, he lashed out, throwing a lunch tray across the cafeteria. Removed from the group and sent to the nurses office for observation, the boy replied, ‘don’t tell my mom, she’s going to beat me.’

In a situation like that the school has to react, but how?

Well, according to our friend, this nurse opted to call the Department of Human Services, which showed up on her doorstep while her 70-plus year-old parents visiting from out of town were shocked at the event unfolding before their eyes.

My friend is a disciplinarian. But a child abuser she is not. Those two boys have the world and it’s hard for me to think that either of them live in an environment where they’re being chased around the house by a belt-wielding, red-eyed crazy lady.

I asked a former colleague who works as an administrator for a school district just outside the city on protocol for situations like this and she agreed that a call to DHS on this mom shouldn’t have been so black and white.

“It’s a really tough call because there are a

number of factors that come into play before you go the route of calling DHS,” she said.

“Now again, every district is going to react to an event by their own protocols, but typically you take a look at any past history, if there’s any bruising on the child but if there’s nothing there you have to tread lightly. If this is a case of abuse, the last thing you want to do is make the parent upset at the child and have something worse happen if true. So this takes a concerted decision on behalf really of a guidance counselor and school administrators. I’ve never heard of a school nurse with that kind of power.”

But according to my friend, this one apparently felt like she did have the power.

She mentioned having run-ins with this nurse before over other incidents. But inherently her gut keeps telling her this one reeks of backdoor bigotry. Her son being one of a handful of Black children at this school in addition to the fact that she is an NP at a top hospital, to jump the gun on a passive accusation like this could cost her the career she worked decades to get.

Something she made apparent in a text that ruined the rest of my Monday night: “It’s just so frustrating and upsetting at the same. No matter how many degrees I get I will always be a ni***** in some people’s eyes.”

here social interaction has been constrained to online forums, Leigh Goldenberg finds the theater to be a sacrasant place for people to occupy the same physical space. That’s why Goldenberg, the executive director of Theatre Philadelphia is thrilled to return the second year of the organization’s marquee event, Philly Theater Week, an offering of more performances and opportunities meant to forge bonds between audience and artist.

This year’s event, running from Feb. 7-17 plans to provide reduced tickets at a rate of either no cost, to $15 and as much as $30. Philly Theater Weekwill feature 100 different events, totalling over 315 performances, produced by professional regional theatres, local community theaters and independent artists.

“Philly Theater Week is to raise awareness of the great productions happening in the region and to reduce barriers for audiences to attend and to try something new,” said Goldenberg. “There’s so much happening here, right in your backyard, all within a 35-mile radius.”

Theater aficionados and novices alike can get excited for a wide-range of plays and musicals, from classics like Opera Philadelphia’s production of A Midsummer’s Night Dream at the Academy of Music to world premiers such Barrymore, Whiting and Terrence McNally Award-winning playwright James Ijames’s Youth that will perform at the Villanova Theatre.

Other productions that Theatre Philadelphia hopes will excite include: Theatre in the X already sold-out The Colored Museum at The African American Museum, Theater Exile’s return to their renovated South Philly space with An Oak Tree, and Philly Fringe Festival standard Juniper Productions’ Best of Cocktail Plays at Philadelphia Distilling. Philly Improv Theater will also be adding its comedic chops to the event with

different productions nearly everyday and University of the Arts will be showcasing their new Equinox Festival during Philly Theatre Week.

In an effort to create an even stronger Philly scene, Philly Theater Weekwill also include events to support its community.

“This year there are ticketed events that are for theater artists to connect with each other,” relayed Goldenberg. “This is a great way for people to come together as well ... for people to create new work together or to just join in conversation around things.”

Goldenberg can’t remember a time when she didn’t have a passion for theater, attending shows with her parents when young and taking acting classes at the Arden Theatre Company in high school.

“I have always felt like theater is a great way to bring people together and just expose yourself to experiences other than your own and to really build empathy,” explained Goldenberg. “I’ve always done theater with a bit of a social justice and civic engagement bent. I like to see how when you learn about something through a theater where you connect with people, what are you prepared to do next.”

Aligned with a “social justice and civic engagement bent,” Philly Theater Week will also showcase a number of progressive events, such as a “Radical Design,” a two hour social event for queer people of color designers to meet and network with local artistic di-

rectors at The Design Center on Feb. 11. In addition, there will be an E-Waste Recycling Drive on Feb. 11 at Suzanne Roberts Theatre for people to donate old electronics to the Philadelphia Green Alliance Chapter.

Heading into the second year of Philly Theatre Week, Goldenberg feels an added confidence. From putting tickets up on the website sooner to more comprehensive registration forms for theaters, the executive director made sure to apply the lessons learned from the year before — including when to best schedule the kickoff events.

Both kickoff events are free and will take place at Cherry Street Pier.

“One thing that was a challenge last year was that our kickoff party was on the first day Theater Week and that happened to day of the Eagles Super Bowl parade,” said Goldenberg. “I’m not going to begrudge a Super Bowl win at all, but this year we planned our kickoff on Feb. 1 and 2, a couple days before Theater Week starts so we are not in conflict with any football and not in conflict with any other Philly Theater Week events.”

The military is, by many assessments, the largest employer of trans people in the United States, with an estimated 15,500 active-duty service members. Despite this, expected costs for trans medical care are only somewhere between $2 million to $8 million per year, according to the Rand Corporation. Compare that to the $41.6 million the military spends on Viagra annually or Trump’s frequent Mar a Lago trips, which cost taxpayers at least $3.6 million each.

“I think the ban is hateful, horrifying and in bad taste,” says veteran Ashley Scott, who also transgender served an 11-year career in the military with multiple stays in Iraq.

He noted that during that time, his service

Government reopens for now Philly federal workers brace for possible future shutdown

BY ANDREA CANTOR Closing out the fifth week of the nation’s longest government shutdown, President Donald Trump announced on Jan. 25 that it would reopen — for now at least.

Trump signed a short-term spending bill into law, which does not include any of the proposed $5.7 billion of funding for his controversial Mexico–U.S. border wall plan, to fund the 25 percent of the government affected by the shutdown through Feb. 15. Lawmakers have three weeks to devise a bill that would placate Trump, otherwise the government will shutdown again until a compromise is reached or the president will declare a national emergency and order the Defense Department to construct the wall.

“Let me be very clear,” Trump said in his Friday speech. “We really have no choice but to build a powerful wall or steel barrier.”

Many are breathing a sigh of relief and celebrating the victory of the government’s reopening, even if it may only be temporary.

“After passing several House bills to reopen the government, I am relieved that the President has decided to end his shutdown and the suffering it has caused for our federal workers and their families,” said U.S. Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-4) in a public statement. “Now that this has come to an end, I am determined to ensure that it does not happen again. And I look forward to focusing on the many important issues that Americans sent us here to address.”

The approximate 800,000 federal workers, including the 45,000 or so in the Philadelphia region, affected by the partial government shutdown that started on Dec. 22 are not soon to forget the damage that has been done.

John Siciliano, a correctional officer (CO) at the Federal Detention Center who Philadelphia Weekly previously interviewed at a rally on Independence Mall earlier this month, said he is cautious about the next coming weeks.

“I’m so thankful it’s open, but I believe at the end of the three weeks it’s going to shut

back down and we are preparing,” said Siciliano, a New Jersey resident. “Hopefully they can work a deal out, but I don’t believe so.”

Siciliano and his fellow mandated COs from Federal Detention Center were present at a federal workers rally at the Philadelphia International Airport on Friday before news broke of the government’s reopening.

CO Holly Washington, 40, said she was preparing to pull her youngest son out of daycare because she was unable to afford it.

The Northeast Philly resident explained that not only did the shutdown create a financial strain on her family, but also added risks at the prison as a result of it being short staffed in an administrative facility holding nearly 1,000 inmates, all of whom were aware of the shutdown and its implications.

“All the inmates know.

They watch the news, they know everything that is going on. They crack jokes,” said Washington at the rally. “The ones that are workers are still getting paid so that’s even more upsetting, the inmates are getting paid and we are not.”

The protest held by furloughed TSA workers and American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) labor union at the airport’s Terminal B showed a strong turnout of various federal departments and politicians, including U.S. Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) and U.S. Reps. Brendan Boyle (D-2) Chrissy Houlahan (D-6) and Dwight Evans (D-3) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-1).

As furloughed employees are getting back to work, uncertainty still looms over what will happen in three weeks time as well as getting tax returns on time due to the hard hits to the IRS. State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta (D-181) was present at the midday rally and surmised to PW what he ascertains as the core of the shutdown.

“We are putting people’s lives at risks, quite frankly, and livelihoods at risks for a wall that Mexico was supposed to pay for — it’s absurd,” said Kenyatta.

Arthur Baselice Jr. wants justice for his late son, not more meaningless words from Pope Francis Pope Francis chastised American Bishops in a complete mishandling of sex abuse by the clergy in a letter penned earlier this month.

“The Church’s credibility has been seriously undercut and diminished by these sins and crimes, but even more by the efforts made to deny or conceal them,” Francis wrote. “This has led to a growing sense of uncertainty, distrust and vulnerability among the faithful.”

Many outlets and critics were quick to note Pope Francis excluded any mention of punishment for those guilty of molestation, including the 301 members of the clergy in Pennsylvania an explosive court filing cited for more than 1,000 incidences of child abuse. Instead, the pope urged the church to internally strengthen and repair itself.

“Let us try to break the vicious circle of recrimination, undercutting and discrediting, by avoiding gossip and slander in the pursuit of a path of prayerful and contrite acceptance of our limitations and sins,” Francis wrote.

One of the people not buying into the words from the pope is Arthur Baselice Jr. He is a father who speaks on behalf of his son, Arthur III, silenced by a fatal heroin overdose in 2006 after years of mental anguish stemming from repeated clergy abuse.

In the mid-1990s, Arthur III was sexually abused by two Franciscan clergyman at Archbishop Ryan High School in Northeast Philadelphia. The perpetrators included the principal Rev. Charles Newman and Brother Regis Howitz, then a maintenance worker at the school.

Newman eventually resigned from his position after it came to light that he stole $1 million from the school and the Franciscan Order, a crime that would cost him four years in jail. His crimes of pedophilia, however, have never been served inside a cell. “[The] pope is just a puppet controlled by the curia. In reality, nothing in the church will change until the laws ... are changed,” Baselice said in a conversation with Philadelphia Weekly. “Can the pope confirm that the god he claims to represent is agreeing with his nonsense?”

For Baselice, one of the laws that needs to be remedied is Pennsylvania’s statute of limitations, which robbed his son of any judicial recompense. Currently, the state law gives sex abuse victims – who are 18 or older during the time of the abuse – just two years to file a civil suit. Those younger have 12 years after they turn 18 to file civil charges. The age cutoff to file a criminal charge of child sexual abuse is 50.

“It’s all about due process. That’s the argument, due process, right? But due process is a double-edged sword,” Baselice challenged. “So

why is it that the accused have due process and the victims have been denied due process?

When are the victims going to get due process?”

Baselice believes a major roadblock in sexual abuse reform is Joe Scarnati, president pro tempore of the Pennsylvania State Senate. Scarnati has twice blocked bill passage that would allow older victims to sue their perpetrators. Baselice also noted that Megan Crompton, the wife of Scarnati’s chief of staff, Drew Compton serves as the vice president of government relations at Long, Nyquist & Associates, a lobbying firm that represents the Catholic Church.

“They tortured him to friggin’ death” The first time the retired Philadelphia detective knew something had happened to his son was when Arthur III called him, saying he was being investigated by a man, named Jack Rossiter, of the FBI. Baselice called Rossiter, whose first name is actually Joe, and soon found out that he previously worked for the FBI. In actuality, he was an archdiocesan investigator.

“He said, ‘get your son some help, he was abused by a couple of priests from the archdiocese,’” Baselice recalled. “He said, ‘get your son some help and I’ll get the archdiocese to pay for it.’”

Two years later, Arthur III at just 28, would be found dead in a Camden apartment. His death had arguable connections to his past sexual trauma. But Baselice affirmed that it was more than an arguable connection, it was apparent, as he claims it was Newman who introduced his son to drugs, giving him Oxycontin and other substances before sexual attacks.

“He took his life, because they tortured him to friggin’ death,” he said.

Baselice explained that since his son’s perpetrators were Franciscan, he was not eligible for any compensation associated with the ongoing child abuse investigations against accused Pennsylvania priests.

However, it is a sum of money that he wouldn’t take even if eligible.

“Who is this guy to tell me that the misery is of the past, present and future? He is going to put a dollar value on my son’s death and our misery? Bullshit,” said Baselice, who now lives in a New Jersey suburb. “Is it going change the carnage that our lives have become, the misery? What’s it going to change?”

No matter his personal situation, Baselice attested he stands in solidarity with the other victims and hopes the trials will bring, at the very least, justice to those who have gone for so long without it.

“What I do for my son, I do for the other victims,” said Baselice. “I’m not interested in this for myself, although I do have an agenda, I want these two guys who molested my son to be held accountable for their actions, and I want the other victims to have the same due process that we are all entitled to.”

This wish arrives on the heels of last month’s state Supreme Court ruling to conceal 11 of the priests’ names on the Grand Jury report. Released in August, the initial report revealed 270 of the priests’ names to the public. State Attorney General Josh Shapiro, a champion in the scandal’s unveiling, has criticized the decision to withhold the 11 names.

“I have consistently fought for the release of the entire, unredacted Grand Jury report into widespread sexual abuse and cover up within the Pennsylvania Catholic Church,” Shapiro said in Dec. 3 in a public statement. “Today’s Order allows predator priests to remain in the shadows and permits the Church to continue

concealing their identities.”

Shapiro explained that while he is unable to release the names, the church still can.

“While this Order bars me from releasing the names of these 11 petitioners, nothing in this Order prevents the Dioceses from sharing the shielded names with their parishioners and the public. I call on the Bishops to do so immediately, consistent with their recent calls for transparency.”

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the Franciscan order found both of Arthur III’s sexual abuse allegations credible. However to date, according to Baselice Jr., the only punitive action taken against Newman and Howitz was restriction to nonpublic ministry.

“They are living the life of prayer and penitence, while I’m living a life of misery,” said Baselice.

BROTHER PRODUCERS BNYX® AND BEAUTIFULMVN SCHOOL US ON HOW TO EFFECTIVELY PLAY THE MUSIC GAME

I

t is common knowledge that the music industry is a cut-throat industry for performers. But the same holds true for those behind the scene, the producers who craft and polish the sound. Luckily for brother producers BNYX® and BEAUTIFULMVN, the duo from Upper Darby has each other to brave the beats and tracks of their dog-eat-dog field.

BNYX®, pronounced Benny X, works with House of 99, a label that includes artist-producer Charlie Heat. At 23 years old, BNYX® has already worked with the likes of Dougie F, Tdot Illdude, Bri Steves and Ty Dolla $ign. His 19-year-old brother, BEAUTIFULMVN, who also goes by the name of James, is not signed with a label but has teamed with artists, such as Heat, Lil Baby and G Herbo.

BNYX® and BEAUTIFULMVN have made independent strides in the industry, however, as they struggle to make their marks, they prefer to do it together with their complementary attributes. BEAUTIFULMVN starts many of their collaborations with a loop and melody, plus a whole lot of charisma. More grounded, BNYX® finesses the concepts, turning them into polished beats.

Collaborating on a number of projects, the two have already produced a track, “Live Up to the Hype,” for Shy Glizzy. In addition to production, the pair also writes songs and is excited about their latest creative endeavors with up-and-comer Andrea Valle, a Philly hiphop artist.

In addition to conducive work habits that promote optimum creative steam, BNYX® and BEAUTIFULMVN value the safe haven that a sibling dynamic can bring to the professional space. Albeit, there are times when the two will work from separate rooms, at the end of the day, they are able to work through projects with the utmost honesty and produce their best work.

“I’ll be in the studio with someone that’s not James, and sometimes I’d be scared to express my opinion, even though sometimes that’s what you have to do to earn respect,” explained BNYX®. “The music industry is so tricky because you don’t know who has the big ego, you don’t know who’s going to get hurt by what … so when you’re scared to say something it’s the worst feeling.”

But egos are just one of the many pitfalls the brothers said they have to traverse in the music industry. Another is the oversaturation in the production industry as a result of the upswing in technology.

“Nowadays in the music industry, the way that people see producers and our music and our creations, it’s kind of like candy to them,” said BEAUTIFULMVN. “It’s because it is so accessible and everybody is doing the same thing.”

Like many others, the siblings’ first introduction to production started when BNYX® received a laptop during his senior year at Upper Darby High School. But unlike many others who only mess around with production software on their computers, they both had been classically trained in music, mainly in the piano. Even more so, music is in their blood, literally the reason for their existence.

Their father, a Haitian immigrant, came to America on a visa to perform in a national gospel tour as a singer and guitarist. After moving to the states, he then met his soon-tobe wife, also an immigrant from Haiti.

Imbuing passion and love into their music learned from their father, the brothers moved toward creating music instead of playing it.

Praising the “control” they can have over their craft, the siblings are preparing to take control over their careers by moving to to Los Angeles.

“The thing is with us staying in Philly right now, there’s not a lot going on. Nobody’s really looking out for anybody, especially when you’re trying to make it in the place that you’re from,” said BEAUTIFULMVN. “People are going to make you wait until you pass this certain threshold, this imaginary threshold, before they’re going to say, ‘Oh yeah, now I like what you’re doing.’”

Ready to leave their old neighborhood behind, the two are seasoned for the West Coast, a place they have been to a handful of times this past year. A fan of hit songwriter-producer Max Martin, BNYX® hopes to one day trade in hip-hop beats for pop ones, believing there is more freedom, both artistically and financially, that pop can afford for a young producer.

State Senator Daylin Leach sues sexual assault accuser and two other women

On Jan. 28, state Sen. Daylin Leach filed a defamation lawsuit against his sexual assault accuser, Cara Taylor. Taylor has previously filed a private criminal complaint, alleging that the politician of coerced her into performing oral sex back in 1991 when she was 17 years old.

At the time, Leach was representing Taylor’s mother in an attempted murder case.

The senator, who serves parts of Montgomery and Delaware Counties, has asked for $50,000 in damages, claiming in the lawsuit that the accusations have made hurt his ability to serve in office and have caused his wife stress. Leach ended his run for Congress last February, when allegations of sexual harassment and grouping of eight women and three men surfaced.

In a Facebook post published on Jan. 25, the Philadelphia-born Temple University alum explained why he would be suing his accuser.

“My family and I are no longer able or willing to endure this,” the post began. “For the sake of the issues I care about, for the sake of my family and friends and staff, for the sake of my reputation, and for the importance of truth itself, I simply cannot continue to silently and passively allow this. I have always said that I wanted due process. Now, I am going to get it.”

The lawsuit also mentions #MeToo activists Gwen Snyder and Colleen Kennedy. Both Snyder, known for her sexual assault accusation against a Bernie Sanders delegate at the 2016 Democratic National Convention, and Kennedy, a former worker on one of Leach’s campaigns, have publicly defended Taylor’s allegations against Leach and have called on

him to resign from office.

Many others, including Gov. Tom Wolf, have also said that Leach should step down.

“It is past time for Sen. Leach to step down.

The serious and shocking allegations against him PA STATE SENATOR DAYLIN LEACH need to be thoroughly investigated,” said state Auditor General Eugene DePasquale in a public statement on Jan. 29. “In the meantime, he has no business serving in the Senate, much less serving on the Judiciary Committee that could weigh in on statute of limitations issues.”

Senate democrats have launched an investigation, conducted by an outside firm, into Taylor’s accusations against Leach.

Attorney Marni Jo Snyder stated on behalf of Taylor, Snyder and Kennedy that the Leach’s lawsuit was “an attempt to silence these women,” according to WHYY. “I will only say at this time that truth is an absolute defense to the claim and that Mr. Leach’s condemnation of the #MeToo movement as a method for defamation makes me sick,” continued the attorney.
