Inaugural Pride New state Rep. Brian Sims’ swearing-in drew an enthusiastic crowd of LGBT-friendly luminaries. he last four years have seen unprecedented progress in LGBT rights: Gay marriage has been approved by states’ referendums; “don’t ask, don’t tell” is history; there are now a record number of gay individuals representing citizens in government; and on Monday, for the first time ever, a U.S. president mentioned gay rights in his inaugural address. Closer to home: This past election season, Philadelphia citizens elected gay rights activist and lawyer Brian Sims to his first term in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, making him the first member of the LGBT community ever elected to the state legislature. (And one of two openly gay members of the state House; Republican Mike Fleck came out after the 2012 election.)

So, last Thursday afternoon, members of the state House, Philadelphia City Council and local activists joined on the sixth floor of City Hall for the ceremonial swearing-in of Sims, who, as of Jan. 1, represents the 182nd District of Pennsylvania, including parts of Center City and the Gayborhood.

Present were Democratic Leader of the House of Representatives Frank Dermody, Rep. Cherelle Parker, Rep. Mike O’Brien, Councilman Bill Green, Philadelphia Gay News publisher Mark Segal, civil rights activist David Mixner and numerous other supporters. The atmosphere was casual, but all the speakers were extremely passionate, and they had one thing in common: They were there to celebrate the LGBT community’s historic new seat at the table. That’s one seat at a table of 203, of course—but it’s a start.

The first of the assembled luminaries from Philadelphia to speak was state Rep. Cherelle Parker, leader of the city delegation in the House. While making some jokes about Rep. Sims’ good looks—she called the politician “S.S.G.”: “He’s smart, he’s savvy, and he’s good looking; and that’s the combination you need to go out on a date with Cherelle Parker”—she also offered advice on how to handle Harrisburg. “There are great expectations of you now, particularly from the community that I know you’re going to advocate passionately for,” she said. “But … never allow anyone to put you in a box.”

Mark Segal, publisher of the Philadelphia Gay News, reflected upon the political history that led gradually to Sims’ election, including a successful nondiscrimination bill that passed Philadelphia City Council decades ago and similar legislation that failed in Harrisburg.

Activist and author David Mixner gave perhaps the most impassioned speech of

the afternoon, noting how far the LGBT community has come since his secret civil rights meetings in California and his having lost “300 friends to AIDS” in the ’80s and ’90s. “You cannot, Brian, be as good as all these other legislators,” he said, “with all due respect. You must be better, because you are the first [to show the state] what we bring to the table when we’re allowed to serve.”

When it was Sims’ time to speak, he began by admitting he hadn’t prepared any words.

“I sat here for the last hour and thought about what I wanted to say to them and to all of you,” he said, referring to the speakers in City Hall as “the architects of who I am today.”

After acknowledging all those who’d spoken on his behalf, Sims told the crowd that he’s one of several voices of a new generation of Philadelphians to participate in politics; he noted that his work for the community will be difficult, but promised to be a tireless voice in the Capitol. “I don’t mind saying that the leadership in Philadelphia has been very old and very white,” he said, “and yet, I know that the next generation will not be ... I know that there are so many well-trained, qualified individuals out there who are stepping up to the plate, and I am honored to have been one of them.

“If you want the best from me, then continue to give me the best of you …

What’s next is equality, nondiscrimination— and what’s next is for all of us in this room who are denied the equal rights that our constitution guarantees us to hold our heads high as equal citizens in this country and in this commonwealth.”

He’s got his work ahead of him. The Pennsylvania Human Relations Act provides protection against discrimination on several bases—but not sexual orientation. Similarly, Pennsylvania’s hate crime laws do not cover sexual orientation, nor does state law support any type of same-sex domestic partnership (though Philly does). Sims has also told PW in the past that he intends to sponsor legislation to ban “reparative therapy,” a controversial psychological experiment that seeks to “ungay” members of the LGBT community. For now, he’s already been appointed to three state House committees: State Government, Commerce and Professional Licensure. And at Thursday’s ceremony, Rep. Dermody noted with a laugh that there’s a reason they put Sims on the State Government Committee: to convince Rep. Daryl Metcalfe of Western Pennsylvania, the committee chair, to scrap his anti-gay marriage bill. (Randy LoBasso)

Acclaimed Inquirer sportswriter Frank Fitzpatrick’s new book, The Perfect Game, tells the story of how Villanova’s shocking 1985 upset of Georgetown changed college basketball forever. This week, PW presents an exclusive excerpt, introducing the three young players who’d help lead the team to victory. illanova’s unlikely championship had its genesis in an unlikely location, at a summer camp that began its existence with an unlikely name. In 1966, New York basketball junkies Howard Garfinkel and Will Kleine started a basketball camp, one that they hoped would allow rising high school seniors an opportunity both to improve and market their skills. Garfinkel had gone to summer camps as a boy and believed he understood how to run one successfully. When he found an available site 115 miles north of New York City, Camp Orinsekwa in Niverville, New York, the Roy Rubin Basketball Camp was born.

Rubin was a friend, the then-successful coach at Long Island University. Garfinkel figured Rubin’s relatively well-known name would help sell his idea in the New York area, where his initial focus was. He couldn’t have known, of course, that a few years later Rubin would graduate to the NBA. There, in the space of a single season, he destroyed his reputation and had an adjective permanently affixed to his name—Poor Roy Rubin. In the 1972–73 season, his first and last in the NBA, Rubin’s Philadelphia 76ers set a still-extant record for ineptitude, losing 73 of their 82 games. Rubin’s name soon yielded to the more generic Five Star, and the growing camp relocated to another remote locale, Honesdale, a Pocono Mountains community in the northeastern corner of Pennsylvania.

With the aid of coaches like Hubie Brown, Chuck Daly, and Bob Knight, Five Star quickly acquired a lofty status in the basketball community. By the late 1970s, at the dawn of a new basketball renaissance, it was attracting the absolute best players and instructors.

What made Five Star unique, many now insist, was the quality of its teaching. Knight, for example, developed a system of learning stations. Players moved from one to another, tutored at each stop by some well-known coach in a different basketball fundamental or technique. The lessons were permanently etched in the minds of the campers. Pinckney, for example, never forgot Station 13, where, in a group with Patrick Ewing and future Louisville star Billy Thompson, he learned the intricacies of the jump-hook from Rick Pitino.

It was there in the remarkable summer of 1980—when Five Star’s attendees also included such future Hall of Famers as Ewing, Michael Jordan, Chris Mullin, and Karl Malone—that Ed Pinckney, Gary McLain, and Dwayne McClain first met. The three youngsters, their personalities as distinct as their talents, bonded immediately.

Early on at Five Star, they found themselves on competing teams. Each liked what he saw of the others. “Something clicked,” recalled McClain. “Right then I knew I wanted to play with them.” The trio’s energy and enthusiasm derived from its smallest member.

McLain had grown up on Long Island but followed his high school coach, Bill Donlon, to Methuen High in Massachusetts. He did so, in part, to escape the trouble he was beginning to find for himself.

The child of a broken home—his parents divorced when he was nine—McLain was smoking marijuana regularly by the time he was sixteen. He was, he would admit later, a hurt and insecure child, one who tried to mask his insecurity, at first with an outgoing demeanor and later with a more powerful remedy. As a youngster, he was mouthy, flashy, impulsive, a class clown always in search of an audience. Not surprisingly, he would be the first of the three new friends to decide on a college. It wasn’t that difficult. McLain didn’t have as many options as his taller buddies. Only Holy Cross and Villanova had expressed much interest. “He wasn’t a great recruit,” Villanova head coach Rollie Massimino said. “He was just a player.”

Holy Cross was just too far removed from the spotlight for his taste. Villanova seemed more exotic. It wasn’t North Carolina, but he’d have a better shot at glory there. He’d seen the Wildcats on TV a couple of times. He knew all about the Big East.

So he chose Villanova. And once he did, he pestered McClain and Pinckney to do the same. “I thought we could have a real chemistry,” McLain said. His efforts focused first on

McClain. He telephoned the Massachusetts youngster constantly in the late summer and fall of 1980. “You’ve got to come, too,” he told his new friend. “We can make something happen there. They’re in this new super league, the Big East. The coach is this little fat dude who looks like Louie DiPalma [Danny DeVito’s character on TV’s Taxi]. I’ll put the ball in your hands there. We’ll all be stars.”

He was right. But their real stardom, and ultimately their fame, would come as a unit. Pinckney and to a lesser extent McClain would enjoy only modest NBA careers.

McLain would never get there. Yet in some perverse way, McLain would become the best known of the three—though not for the reasons he’d imagined that summer.

McClain, the silky 6-foot-6 forward from Holy Name High in Worcester, had a personality that was a pleasant cross between the brash McLain’s and the low-key Pinckney’s. He was the first to relent to his smaller friend’s nagging; after visiting the campus, he committed to Villanova. McLain and McClain then teamed up on Pinckney, a 6-foot-9 center from Adlai E. Stevenson in the Bronx, who was being more heavily recruited. “What good is having a great point guard and a great power forward,” McLain told him, “if we don’t have some talent in the paint?” While Pinckney was amused by McLain, he was not

Pinckney would discover later that he and Ewing had more in common than basketball ability and their roles in one of the sport’s most memorable games. Both were one of seven siblings. Both had several older sisters who doted on them. Both came from two-parent homes. Both had mothers who were employed in hospitals, hardworking fathers who did manual labor. Both grew up in apartments across the street from public playgrounds. Both left much of the collegerecruiting process to their high school coaches. Both were mama’s boys who wanted to go to college relatively close to home.

The Pinckneys lived in the Bronx’s James Monroe Housing Projects. The youngest child and only son, Ed, was born in March 1963.

Since his father, a construction laborer, often worked two or three jobs, his mother was the disciplinarian and teacher. The boy’s older sisters waited on their little brother, dressed him, fed him, treated him like a delicate toy.

“The fact that Ed was a very laid-back person probably came from him being the baby of a family with six older sisters,” said Massimino.

“He was the spoiled kid on the block.” Though both his parents were tall, neither had ever played basketball. The boy would first drift to baseball, dreaming of becoming a New York Yankee until, at the urging of friends, he gave basketball a try.

The family’s apartment on Story Avenue was directly across the street from PS 100, a public school whose playground contained several courts. Pinckney quickly was taken in by basketball, enjoyed it so much that he often rose early to play before school, at PS 100 or at nearby PS 131. A poster of Knicks star Walt “Clyde” Frazier hung in his bedroom. When the Knicks won a second NBA title in four years in 1973, the popularity of basketball in New York, already at a high level, skyrocketed. As it did, each borough developed its own style of play. “Brooklyn is like a more driving-to-the-basket, slashing style of ball,” Pinckney would say. “A lot of flamboyancy, like the Pearl Washingtons, the Stewart Grangers. The Manhattan game would be the power.... And the Queens style was finesse. The Bronx is a combination of them all.” When he was twelve and well over six feet, Pinckney accompanied a friend to Harlem, where he found the talent level “eyepopping.” Gradually, he started to play there, too, making the journey by subway.

At Stevenson, coach Steve Post recognized Pinckney’s potential early. “I knew right away Ed was special,” Post said. “He was 6’2” or so and coordinated.” He also had an easygoing personality that attracted other youngsters and earned him the nickname “Easy Ed,” had a strong work ethic, and was extremely coachable. “What a difference it makes when a kid lives with a father and a mother,” said Post. “Ed had an innocence about him. You wanted to help him.”

When Pinckney was a tenth-grader, Fred Brown, the future Georgetown star, trans-

ferred to Stevenson and Post’s team became a city powerhouse. Brown had a harder edge than Pinckney. Hoping some of that toughness would rub off on his mild-mannered center, Post had Brown go one-on-one with him after practice. “In the beginning, Fred whooped him,” Post said. In a 1980 city championship matchup with Franklin High, Brown fouled out late. Post told Pinckney it was time he became a leader and took charge.

that were too far from home. Pinckney liked Providence and was ready to sign there until coach Gary Walters inexplicably told him, “Ed, you’ll be better off going to Villanova.”

Pinckney was flabbergasted. Why Villanova?

For him, the school was too far out in the country. But three things eventually swayed him—McLain’s constant nagging, his mother’s affection for Massimino, and McClain’s good-looking sister. Massimino was one of

The youngster did. Stevenson won and colleges everywhere noticed.

Their interest abated little when he hurt his ankle as a senior. Post, knowing Pinckney’s parents were insistent about him getting a good education, eliminated several less prestigious colleges from the list, as well as those, like Louisville and North Carolina,

the few coaches who visited the Pinckneys’ apartment. He ate Ed’s mother’s cake and told her he would see to it that her son went to class and got educated. “You should go to Villanova,” his mother urged Ed not long after that visit. “That little Italian coach, he’ll make sure you graduate.” On a recruiting trip to the school, Pinckney encountered McClain. Ac-

companying the Massachusetts schoolboy was his sister, who attended nearby Harcum Junior College. “She was beautiful,” recalled Pinckney. And with that added inducement he was sold. Mitch Buonaguro, Massimino’s chief assistant, had worked at Five Star that summer. But he claimed he had little to do with convincing the trio to come to Villanova. “They recruited themselves,” he said.

Pinckney and McLain wound up as roommates in Sullivan Hall. McLain made life noisy and sometimes crazy, but Pinckney never wanted for laughs. Or dreams. One day that first autumn, the two of them were in McClain’s room when the topic of their always rambling conversation shifted to what they hoped to accomplish before graduating. One of them suggested they list their ambitions on index cards. “For some reason,” said Pinckney, “all the cards had ‘Final Four’ on them....

We made a pact then that we’d get there.”

The three were inseparable, on and off the court. “From their first day together, they had a feel for each other,” said Buonaguro.

Their daydreams about shared future success became grander. In one, they would all be drafted by the same NBA expansion team.

They liked that idea so well that they had business cards printed that included their new collective nickname, “The Expansion Crew.”

The adjustment to college and Massimino’s system wasn’t easy for them or for any Villanova freshman. The coach, as the style his teams played indicated, was old-fashioned.

He didn’t like flash. He tolerated dunking, but told players that if they ever missed one, they’d find their butts on the bench before the ball hit the court. Then there was the matter of trying to fit in with the team’s veterans.

During one early practice, Pinckney went up for a dunk only to be knocked hard to the ground by John Pinone, the Wildcats’ bulky and physical 6-foot-8 star. “You ain’t dunking on me, kid,” Pinone told him. Pinckney, a pencil-thin 160 pounds when he enrolled, soon discovered that weight-training would be essential if he ever hoped to play effectively in the Big East. And for a city kid who had never done much, Massimino’s emphasis on running gave him difficulties. On the first day of practice, Pinckney was curious about the buckets that were lined up alongside the court. He asked assistant Steve Lappas about them. “Those,” Lappas told him, “are for when you’re going to puke. You’re going to work harder than you ever have.”

Despite their vivid imaginations, none of the freshman threesome was a starter when the 1981–82 season began. Massimino had Villanova heading in an upward direction by then. In 1977–78, his fifth season, he’d gotten the Wildcats to an East Region final, where they were defeated by Duke. It would be the first of four Elite Eight trips for Villanova in seven years. The Wildcats would finish the 1981–82 season with a 24–8 record, a Big East regular-season title, and two NCAA tourna-

We’ll all be stars.” simino’s club slipped a bit, finishing 19–12 and advancing only to the NCAA’s second round.

By the time they were seniors, they weren’t sure their Final Four vow would ever be fulfilled. And while each had improved tremendously at Villanova, Pinckney in particular wondered if his last season there was going to be the end of the basketball line for him. Was he good enough for the NBA? He just wasn’t certain. For all his talent and success, he still had considerable self-doubt. “[He used to say] he didn’t want to be a pro,” Massimino recalled. “That was his out. It took the monkey off his back. He was always ‘Easy Ed.’ I’ve always tried to talk to him about the future, about what he wants. Does he want to drive a Volkswagen or a Mercedes? Does he want to struggle or does he want real comfort? If you want that kind of thing, you have to extend yourself, you can’t hold back.

You can’t say, ‘Later, it will come later.’” Pinckney would absorb the lesson at just the right time.

Not long after McLain got to Villanova, he graduated from marijuana to cocaine. This was the 1980s, and the drug was ubiquitous.

ment victories. The three freshmen, especially Pinckney and McClain, saw some playing time early that season. But all three believed they ought to be starting. They watched other Big East freshmen, guys like Mullin and Ewing, become instant stars. The latter particularly impressed Pinckney, who figured he’d have to face the Georgetown phenom at least twice a season. “I said, ‘Wow, I still have a lot of work ahead of me,’ ” he recalled.

Deriving fortitude from each other, they marched into Massimino’s office one day and told him they all thought they should be starters. The coach would have a strange relationship with the trio. Their collective spirit, and McLain’s outspokenness in particular, sometimes drove him crazy. But personally he would like them as well as any players he ever had. “They’ve made my hair stand on end,” he would say. “And they’ve made me love and hug them.” Surprisingly, the coach was receptive to their complaint and Pinckney and McClain soon found themselves in the lineup. McLain, stuck behind the talented Granger, had to bide his time, one talent he surely didn’t possess. “Stewart knew Gary was right behind him,” Pinckney said. “Gary really wanted that job. He was determined to push him in every way. The two of them competed in everything.” Their freshman season ended just shy of the Final Four, with a loss to Michael Jordan’s North Carolina in the East Region final.

The following season, a team Massimino would later call his most talented, was practically a mirror image of the 1981–82 squad.

Another 24–8 record, a 12–4 mark and second-place in the Big East, and two tournament wins. It ended the same as well, again on the precipice of a Final Four, with a loss to Hakeem Olajuwon’s Houston in the Midwest Region final. It should have been pretty heady stuff. Two twenty-four win seasons, four NCAA victories, two regional finals against future legends. But it wasn’t near enough for the ambitious Expansion Crew. “We were like costars,” said McLain of their roles on those teams. “We were part of it but not really part of it.”

They were all key contributors their junior season. But though it ended with another NCAA trip—the school’s fifth straight—Mas-

Despite the tropical trappings, the moonlighting jazzbos who created these far-out soundscapes largely fabricated them, which doesn’t mean they aren’t a blast. Tonight, Schwartz will treat the audience to an array of artists ranging from Korla Pandit, who donned a turban and pumped out spooky sounds on his Hammond B-3 organ, to Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz bopping their way through The Girl from Ipanema. Schwartz hasn’t shown most of these clips since the 1990’s Exotica revival, so get into the spirit of things by donning a Hawaiian shirt and ordering a kooky cocktail from one of the go-go dancing waitresses.

FEMI KUTI & THE POSITIVE FORCE

As the son of legendary band leader and activist Fela Kuti, Femi Kuti has had enormous shoes to fill. He’s done quite a good job at that. Learning the music and message directly from his father, Kuti joined Egypt 80, Fela’s band, at the age of 15.

Some years later, he formed his own group, the Positive Force, who have been playing the music of Afrobeat ever since. (In keeping with this custom, Femi’s oldest son, Made, has since joined his band.) Kuti has gained worldwide success and shone a light on the problems facing his father’s home country of Nigeria. Following in his dad’s proud tradition, he is unapologetic about the political messages dispatched in his music, especially African unity. And his upcoming April album, No Place For My Dream, is said to feature more of the funky, politically charged sounds of his earlier work. BRYAN BIERMAN

AYANA MATHIS: THE TWELVE TRIBES OF HATTIE

There was a little voice in Philly-born, Brooklynbased Ayana Mathis’ head that urged her to write her first novel, and the result: The Twelve Tribes of Hattie, a marvelous and moving, largely autobiographical work. It chronicles the life of the Georgia-born Hattie, who moved north to Philadelphia in 1925, and the promises, perils, inventions and dimensions of her 11 children during the Great Migration, in which millions of black people left the dirty South for the seeming promised lands north of the Mason-Dixon Line. Oprah Winfrey read the book, made it a pick in her Oprah’s Book Club 2.0, and the rest is history. Now, Mathis triumphantly comes home to the Free Library and talks about her book, with fellow author Emily Raboteau.

This week, Mauckingbird Theatre Company hosts a benefit to support GLBTQ theater in Philadelphia that includes a staged reading of novel-turnedaward-winning-play-turned-film Bad Seed. Maxwell Anderson’s fabulous stage adaptation of William March’s 1954 novel concerns a young girl (Amanda Schoonover) whose angelic appearance masks a sociopathic personality. Mauckingbird artistic director Peter Reynolds explains that with Seed, “we wished to explore the significant style of camp as it is such a crucial part of queer theatre history. I have loved the film for decades and wanted to introduce our audiences to the story via this ‘all-star’ reading of the piece.” Reynolds says that depending on the audience’s reaction, Mauckingbird may mount a full production of Seed in the future. In the early ‘90s, the American hardcore punk scene was going through a transitional stage. Many of the musicians from the genre were tired of playing to rooms full of sweaty, moshing dudes. They wanted to move along, experiment and maybe write a song over the duration of two minutes. If any band from that time frame defines the collectively unconscious leap across the loud-fast-rules chasm into the realm known as post-core, it’s Quicksand.

Made up of members from such classic New York hardcore bands as Gorilla Biscuits, Beyond and Absolution, the band took the basic, visceral charge of hardcore, slowed it down, tuned it down, dubbed it up and refined it enough to score a major label deal with Polygram Records. In 1995, after recording two full lengths, they disbanded, but left a lasting influence on generations to come. And even though band leader Walter Shreifels swore up and down they’d never reunite, here they are, back and more sonically relevant than ever. hen I first moved back to Philadelphia 11 years ago, Old City was where my friends and I used to go to ogle girls, drink to the point of incoherency and, if the stars aligned properly, get into some sort of minor altercation with a guy who looked like The Situation—years before Mr. Sorrentino became famous for his GTL calculus and probably even before he’d begun waxing his abs to their current Barbie-esque levels of porpoiselike hairlessness.

Fast-forward to 2013. I live in this neighborhood now, raise a family on the very streets where I used to engage in the sort of juvenile ridiculousness that caused my mother such agita, and find myself, on any given day, more at risk of being run over by out-of-control Bugaboo strollers at $1,000 a pop than by ‘roid-raging bridge-and-tunnel types out for a rumble.

The times, as Mr. Zimmerman once said, they are a-changin’.

Philadelphians who don’t see the evolution here on a daily basis, of course, can be forgiven for not realizing how much more well-rounded Old City is these days. When I emailed a friend recently to see if he’d join me for a visit to Craft & Claw, recently opened on Chestnut between Front and Second in the former location of a once-thronging dance bar, his wry response was, “Will I still catch herpes from sitting on one of those booths, or have they cleaned it out since then?”

Thankfully, they have. In fact, they’ve downright resurrected the place.

Rough-hewn wood slats skirt the cavernous interior, as well as plenty of mattress-punched leather and exposed brickwork. The music runs toward the chill, like a subtly remixed version of Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” and the great Squeeze anthem, “Tempted by the Fruit of Another.”

All this is crafted in the service of the food and the beer, and it all hangs together rather well. Crabs here are generously portioned and well presented.

A recent pound of Baltimore-style Alaskan snow crab was easily more than its purported weight; the shells were well-dusted with Old Bay, and the meat itself tender and easily pulled. Dunge-

ness crabs, from the Pacific Northwest, were less dramatically tumescent but made just as much of an impact in their ginger-scallion broth, the sweet meat a nice foil for the kind of back-of-throat spice the liquid carried.

Bacon blue crab mac & cheese was pulled along by the swirling undertow of bacon and succulent pieces of crustacean, though the orecchiette seemed to have held a bit too much water from their boiling, thus thinning out the otherwise excellent gathering of asiago and fontina in what Executive Chef Nick Fabian told me was essentially a fenneland-red-onion vodka cream sauce. Still, it was a dish that we couldn’t stop picking at, especially with its spiced-pankoand-parmesan crown. Crab bisque, smoky with paprika oil, was a workhorse winner; what it might have lacked in excitement, it made up for in the sort of comforting flavor that you hope for from a generous cupful of it.

Even the steamed artichoke excelled, each leaf growing more and more tender, the Pecorino Romano and garlicky oil generously anointing its petals, the garlic-confit mayonnaise almost floral in the context of the thistle. That mayo was so good that I wish they’d offer it as a side to dip the crispy fries into; while any restaurant that makes its own ketchup should be lauded, the outcome, in this case, didn’t seem to justify the effort. Better to double-dip with the mayo and take full advantage of such an excellent accompaniment.

The only letdowns, really, were the cole slaw—with this kind of food, I want a lusty, mayo-and-vinegar-smacked slaw,

not the reticence of the subtle sesameoil-ginger-and-soy we received instead— and the Dutch chocolate cake. While the cake was perfectly fine on its own, it was overwhelmed by a creme anglaise that was just too perfumed with orange zest. Fortunately, the Dutch apple crisp redeemed it. An almost impossibly delicate crust, flaky yet structured, wrapped its elegant rim around generous hunks of apple singing with cinnamon, clove and nutmeg and crowned by an orb of vanilla ice cream.

So, all in all, thumbs way up to this Old City reinvention; from the first moment in the door to the last bite of dessert, Craft and Claw is an excellent addition to the neighborhood. n

Mushroom Surprise Nicole didn’t realize the Trolley Car Diner’s diverse menu would push her out of her culinary comfort zone.

By Nicole Finkbiner // nfinkbiner@philadelphiaweekly.com ike any Northeast Philly native, I appreciate a good diner. But compared to the five that I frequented growing up, Mt. Airy’s retro Trolley Car Diner might as well be a four-star restaurant. I mean, hell, there wasn’t a single crotchety, musky-smelling, raspyvoiced old waitress in the place.

After scanning their menu’s array of classic diner eats and treats as well as some 250+ beers, I was ready to get inside the kitchen, roll up my sleeves and learn to fry something gorgeously greasy. Maybe a burger. Or an omelet.

Or both.

Trolley Car’s head chef, Dwight Forrest, however, had a much different plan. Rather than going with a generic diner staple, he opted to highlight Trolley Car’s selection of less traditional fare.

And instead of testing my culinary skills by having me prepare the dish step by step alongside him, Dwight decided to test my gastrointestinal fortitude by feeding me plate after plate of food.

To backtrack a bit: The dish at hand was stuffed portabella, which Dwight notes is the restaurant’s simplest vegetarian entree. Now, on my personal list of least favorite foods, mushrooms rank pretty high—right after raw oysters and wasabi peas. But ignoring the deep fryer full of perfectly golden, batter-dipped French fries to the right of me and the juicy stack of bacon on my left, I tried to keep an open mind. It was so open, in fact, that as Dwight explained how portabella mushrooms were a great substitute for a lot of meat-based dishes, he managed to briefly trick me into thinking that they were actually somehow “beef-like.”

ME: What makes portabella mushrooms different from other mushrooms?

DWIGHT: It’s really hearty. Almost like a burger.

ME: Really? So what does it taste like?

DWIGHT: It tastes like a mushroom.

ME: Umm… is there any way to make it taste less mushroomy?

DWIGHT: No. I couldn’t believe how much mushroom-related knowledge Dwight has acquired during his 25 years in the biz.

After listing the variety of ways mushrooms can be cooked— fried, sautéed, broiled, steamed, etc.— Dwight stressed that the most important thing to remember is that they will only ever get softer, never harder since most contain 60 to 90 percent water. In other words, the longer you cook the portabella, the higher your chances of being left with “a tired, mushy dish with lettuce in it.” Funny, I thought, that’s exactly how I would have described a mushroom salad. Is that wrong?

As I sliced into the finished portabella, exposing its silvery core, I swear a chill shot down my spine. All I could think was: mushroom mushroom mushroom mushroom. But I reminded myself that the whole point of this column is for me to challenge my taste buds, and I soldiered on—discovering that, with the Parmesan cheese and balsamic glaze largely cloaking the veggies and shroom, it actually made for a pretty good salad. I’m guessing Dwight must have noticed my inner turmoil, though, because a few minutes later, he and his sous chef emerged from the kitchen carrying two more steaming plates of food: Maryland seafood gnocchi and a

barbecue beef brisket sandwich.

Digging into the gnocchi first, the super-light red sauce proved to be an ideal base given the heavy and seemingly bottomless heap of pasta, Atlantic salmon, lump crabmeat, shrimp, corn and peppers. Also, the accompanying slices of garlic bread may just be the best I’ve ever had. Moving on to the beef brisket, the sweet and spicy punch of Trolley Car’s honey chipotle barbecue sauce in between not one, but two creamy layers of Muenster cheese sent my taste buds on a wild, but surprisingly pleasant ride.

My photographer and I spent nearly an hour passing the dishes back and forth, moaning with fullness after every bite until we were slumped over in our redupholstered booth in a food paralysis.

Of course, that didn’t stop us from capping off the meal with Trolley Car’s strawberry milkshake, aka “The Marilyn.”

It is, after all, the ultimate diner staple.

Forgiving the Unforgivable Jessica Dickey’s affecting Amish Project explores a heinous, years-old schoolhouse shooting—and the meaning of mercy.

By J. Cooper Robb // jrobb@philadelphiaweekly.com n a work not for the faint of heart, Simpatico Theatre Project and the Renegade Company are presenting an affecting co-production of The Amish Project, playwright Jessica Dickey’s powerful look at the 2006 shootings at the West Nickel Mines School.

A solo work starring Janice Rowland, The Amish Project is set in Lancaster, Pa., about 90 minutes outside of Philadelphia, home to a large Amish community and the one-room schoolhouse attended by the children of the region’s Amish families. It grabs our attention immediately with an opening line delivered with chilling clarity: “Man enters Amish schoolhouse and opens fire.”

In the 70-minute production, Rowland plays seven eclectic characters that, to varying degrees, were affected by the rampage, which took place on Oct. 2, 2006, when Carl Roberts walked into the West Nickel Mines School armed with three guns. After ordering the teacher and the male students to leave, he shot and killed five female students and wounded five others. Rowland ably channels not only Roberts—who is referred to in the play as Eddie—but Eddie’s widow, Carol, and two of the slaughtered Amish girls, along with three local townpeople: a 16-year-old Latina girl, America, who works at the local Giant supermarket, a university professor who has studied the Amish culture for decades and a bitter woman who seemingly represents Lancaster’s non-Amish community.

Although a work of fiction, Project is similar at times to the docudrama The Laramie Project, which relied on interviews with residents of Laramie, Wyo., to recall the murder of Mathew Shepard.

However, for The Amish Project, Dickey— who lived in Lancaster at the time of the incident—didn’t conduct any interviews or extensive research, other than to visit the schoolhouse site. By making her Project a work of fiction, Dickey gives herself the creative freedom to imagine the slain girls in the afterlife, and in her recreation, Eddie went to the schoolhouse intending to rape them. “I wanted to have the girls,” he says in the empty, chillingly monotonous voice Rowland aptly uses to play the disturbed killer.

enacted on stage, much of director James Stover’s harrowing production can be difficult to watch. “Mister, please shoot me first,” one of the schoolgirls pleads to her captor as Dickey takes us inside the schoolhouse and imagines the last moments in the lives of the innocent children. As alarming as those scenes are, the most disquieting involve Carol. “I still love my husband,” she explains, trying mightily to hold herself and her family together while their world falls apart.

Under Stover’s direction, Rowland invests herself fully into her characters. By defining each one as much by posture and gestures as voice, in her most profoundly empathetic portrayal, she gives us a sense of Carol’s fragile psychological condition. Since her husband committed suicide after killing the schoolchildren, Carol finds herself the primary target of the townspeople’s anger. Writing in a style that mixes poetic images of nature and the afterlife with the harsh discourse of reality and explosions of profanity, Dickey adeptly communicates the depth of Carol’s pain and bewilderment. In a particularly memorable scene, Carol is verbally accosted at the local supermarket by a shopper who tells her, “If you were a decent wife, those poor girls would be alive today. There is a fresh hell where you’ll join your sicko husband.” In another, several bereaved parents go to her house to offer their condolences. It’s a surreal but tender moment of mercy, as Dickey effectively displays how Carol and the Amish community are connected by their common grief.

It is impossible to watch The Amish Project without recalling last month’s horror in Newtown, Conn., and some people may consider it too soon to present a play that examines a tragically similar event. According to Michael Durkin, Renegade’s artistic director, the decision to stage The Amish Project with Simpatico Theatre Project this month was made last summer. Unlike the theater company American Stage in Tampa Bay, Fla.— which debated whether to go ahead with their plans to stage The Amish Project this April following the school shooting in Newtown—Durkin says there “was never any hesitation to not produce the work.

It was more important for the show to be produced in order to discuss the role of guns in society and the effects of what can happen.” To that end, Simpatico and Renegade have partnered with the AntiViolence Partnership of Philadelphia for a discussion about gun control following the 2 p.m. performance on Sun., Jan. 27.

The Amish Project doesn’t specifically address gun control. Instead, it examines a community trying to process an event that has left the survivors in a state of almost unbearable sorrow. Yet despite the play’s disturbing subject matter, it also reveals the resiliency of the human spirit and how one community found the courage to forgive an unforgivable—and, for most people, incomprehensible—crime. ■ Through Feb. 3. $10-$22. isguised as just another decaying row home along 52nd Street, Eris Temple Arts is either the first or last place you’d expect to find an art opening and performance showcase on a Saturday night in West Philly. Should you be deceived by the uninviting exterior, the socially charged graffiti and scent of secondhand fabric greeting you at the door reassures that you are indeed at the right place.

With the signal of a blue spotlight, a crowd huddles around the stage area on the ground level to absorb an eclectic music sampling that includes everything from the Afro-soul beats of the Philly-based Ghetto Songbird to the lulling melodies of singer-songwriter and solo harpist Liz Ciavolino. Only between acts do guests stop and take notice of the equally eclectic and unique creations surrounding them—a collection of multimedia works from 16 female-identified—and mostly local— visual artists.

Organized by Permanent Wave Philly, the local chapter of the original, New York-based network of feminist artists and activists, the show’s title, Create Chaos!, is as much a nod to the venue’s namesake—Eris, the Greek goddess of strife and discord—as it is to the rebellious spirit practically oozing from the walls.

“We believe that the creative energy of chaos can inspire us to create and destroy the criticism, stereotypes and gender roles that keep us from creating,” says Permanent Wave Philly member Candice Johnson, adding that the goal of the show is to “celebrate women, trans and marginalized people as creators of art and music, rather than passive observers.”

Scanning the gallery space, you’re eyes are first drawn to a torn shirt hanging off the left wall with plush, hand-knit guts and organs spewing out from strategically placed holes.

The provocative piece by Quinn Palmer not only gives a whole new meaning to the concept of wearing your heart on your sleeve, but defies the kitschy associations often attached to fiber arts.

Photographer Katrina Ohstrom, on the other hand, highlights the frivolous nature of disarray, capturing a stockpile of multicolored hamster cages and an assortment of toys thrown together on a blue tarp. Positioned next to these playthings is Cathleen Parra’s photo of a young girl in a polka dot dress playing on the floor with two Barbie dolls—both disrobed, one decapitated.

Needless to say, the audience is taken on a bit of a rollercoaster ride.

features three video installations, the most memorable being Barbarism, a multimedia project developed by Rebecca Katherine Hirsch and Sarah Secunda. Exploring the topics of identity, sexuality and gender injustice with a dark sense of humor, the experimental piece is likely to make you giggle the next time you pass a Sephora store.

While the featured works don’t yield an allencompassing statement about womanhood, they do encapsulate Permanent Wave’s mission to continue the arts movement started generations ago by women, queer and trans people, simultaneously debunking the common misconception that feminism is dead or somehow less relevant today. With roughly 50 members and a core group of about 15 consistently active members, the local chapter often partners with like-minded organizations in the city—most recently, Girls Rock Philly, SlutWalk Philly and Hollaback Philly—to host fundraisers as well as out-of-the-box art events and biweekly conscious-raising meetings.

During the opening reception, guests were invited to unleash their own creative chaos at a makeshift arts and crafts station in the back of the house containing stamps, markers, magazine clippings, glitter and face paint. It was there that perhaps the most empowering slogan of the night could be found, and from the unlikeliest of sources: a googly-eyed monster puppet with interchangeable felt faces and a miniature protest sign in his hand reading “Death to the dominant paradigm.” n Through March 31. SIX PACK Six Bleak Films About the Finality of Death

By Matt Prigge // mprigge@philadelphiaweekly.com Winter Light (1963): Ingmar Bergman made his name by offering the image of death as a black-clad figure playing chess with the recently deceased. Later, he won an Oscar for Cries and Whispers, about a woman’s last anguished days. Neither is arguably as unnerving as the second in his “Trilogy of Faith,” in which a pastor (Gunnar Björnstrand) leads a dwindling flock of the hopeless, who’ve come to resent God’s relentless silence. Originally, Bergman wanted to make it about someone demanding God prove his existence and slowly going mad, waiting for nothing.

This gets the job done, too.

The Act of Seeing With One’s Own Eye (1971): A rare break from purely abstract works, Stan Brakhage’s literal stomach-churner prowls the open chest of an autopsy corpse, the human body reduced not only to a lifeless entity but to a barely recognizable shape.

The Mouth Agape (1974): “The movie Amour wishes it could be,” said a friend, who greatly preferred Maurice Pialat’s coldly searing study of a family trying to ignore the dying matriarch relentlessly wheezing from her deathbed to Michael Haneke’s similar latest. Too bad only Americans who can play foreign DVDs will have a chance to see that proves correct. >> The Mouth Agape

Blue (1993): Derek Jarman’s swan song is 76 minutes of a hot-blue screen with voices drifting in and out. As it were, Jarman was sick with AIDS-related complications, which had partially taken his sight. This, in his final days, is how he saw the world.

Synecdoche, New York (2008): A dumpy theater director (Philip Seymour Hoffman) spends decades putting on a live production about his failures, wasting the remainder of his life on worrying. What Jaws did for the water, this does for bottomless self-involvement and -hatred.

The Grey (2012): 2012: A Great Year for Filmic Death.

In most other years, Amour would have been its finest, darkest statement. But then there was Don Hertzfeldt’s It’s Such a Beautiful Day, Bela Tarr’s The Turin Horse and, yes, the movie where Liam Neeson (almost) fucks up wolves.

In fact, it’s a brooding and stark portrayal of existential dread, arguing that the best way to die is to first accept it, then delude yourself into thinking it’s a good thing, even when it isn’t. n

For Better, For Worse, For Love The ruthless villain in Amour is old age, wreaking havoc with the inexorable passage of time.

Director Michael Haneke makes a lot of those. The silver-bearded, doggedly humorless Austrian filmmaker has a temperament perhaps best described as punitive. Films like Cache and The Piano Teacher relentlessly torment their upper crust, bourgeoisie protagonists— and, by extension, the kind of audiences who go see subtitled art films. To be a Haneke fan is to be a bit of a masochist.

Here is a worldview so sadistic that in both his original and English language shot-for-shot remake of Funny Games, just when the tortured family at the center finally catches a break, the movie cruelly, abusively rewinds itself before our very eyes, only to replay the scene with a far uglier outcome. His message is loud and clear: There’s no way to win any of Haneke’s games, and they aren’t very funny.

With Amour, he’s found a villain even more ruthless than Funny Games’ homicidal home invaders, crueler than The White Ribbon’s proto-Nazi children and as devastating as the apocalypse in his Time of the Wolf. Here the boogeyman is old age, wreaking havoc with the inexorable passage of time.

Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anna (Emmanuelle Riva) are retired music teachers in their 80s, comfortably settled into their twilight years in a vast Parisian apartment that looks like a library. There are occasional visits from their self-obsessed daughter (Haneke regular Isabelle Huppert) and one trip into town for a performance by Anna’s most successful pupil (pianist Alexandre Tharaud, playing himself.) But a mysterious pre-credit sequence has already warned us of unfathomable darkness on the horizon, and clouds quickly begin gathering one morning when Anna goes blank over breakfast.

It was probably a stroke, and another will follow. Soon comes partial paralysis, then loss of speech. With all the modern medical advances these days, death often takes its sweet old time, and Haneke keeps the camera locked down in the

middle distance, fading in and fading out on Anna’s advancing physical and mental disintegration within rigidly composed frames. It’s a chilly, pitiless vision that offers no relief, just decline.

There’s an ache in Trintignant’s performance that is palpably heartbreaking. But this is hardly an emotionally effusive couple, and you’re not going to find any sentimental speeches in a Michael Haneke movie. Georges and Anna knew these days would eventually arrive, and they’re just trying to get through the inevitable with a bit of dignity intact. “We have always coped, your mother and I,” he flatly says to Huppert’s singularly useless daughter, the matterof-fact words belied by an ineffable sadness behind his eyes.

Georges promised not to send Anna back to the hospital, and the walls begin to close in on that formerly spacious apartment as the grueling demands of home care take their toll. It’s an ordeal, sitting through Amour, the hushed air of austerity broken only by almost imperceptibly understated moments of tenderness. I don’t think I’ll soon shake the loving embrace with which Georges carries Anna from the toilet, as shattering a depiction of “for better or for worse” as has probably ever been cap-

tured onscreen.

Haneke’s obviously playing with iconography here, casting giants of French cinema as if urging us to recall Trintignant in A Man and a Woman or Riva in Hiroshima mon amour, throwing in an extra-textual layer of memories as we witness the ravages of time.

And yet, as with most Haneke movies, I find his precision can be suffocating. The filmmaking is always so fussy and exacting, determinedly marching through the director’s chosen thesis statement with no deviations or surprises. There’s no room for spontaneity within his hermetic compositions, no sense of life going on outside these exquisite frames. Amour has been improbably embraced by the Academy Awards and hailed as something of a humanistic breakthrough for the director, probably because this is the first time in Haneke’s career that he doesn’t seem to be getting off on all the suffering.

But we suffer all the same. Once you know where Amour is going—and the prologue leaves viewers little opportunity to assume otherwise—there’s nothing left but to run down the clock, which I believe might be the point. But that doesn’t make it any easier to sit through. ■

Happy Landings

When guitarist Chris Forsyth moved to Philly, he fell in with some real sonic heavyweights. The result: cosmic Americana.

@ UNDERGROUND ARTS In a 2007 interview, legendary WMMR jockey Pierre Robert told Philadelphia magazine “There was a time in the ‘80s when I thought Philly was going to become what Seattle wound up becoming in the ‘90s.”

Among the local groups mentioned, along with Tommy Conwell, the Hooters and Robert Hazard, were The A’s. One of the most popular groups in Philadelphia during their heydey, The A’s combined the showy punk muscle of the New York Dolls with the jumpy energy of XTC. Their two albums for Arista Records—their self-titled 1979 debut and 1981’s A Woman’s Got the Power—are classic hidden gems of New Wave.

Even though they ended up on the Billboard charts (and were later covered

by Bruce Springsteen’s right-hand man Clarence Clemons), things hit a wall in ‘82 after losing their record deal. While other hometown heroes went on to great success, The A’s had a painfully brief lifespan.

“When it was the five of us,” lead singer Richard Bush says, “we could make almost any situation fun. As we became a biz and were responsible for other people’s income, it became less easy to do so. We were on the road almost constantly, and at some point, it became apparent that that bad outweighed the good. Plus, at that time, we all thought that 30 was the cutoff age for rock ‘n’ rollers.”

Now in their 50s, The A’s are reuniting for a rare gig. “We did a show for a private party two summers ago,” Bush says. “We had a great time and kept looking for the right opportunity to play again. Things didn’t really pop up right away. As the years go by, it’s very easy to see a time when it would be impossible for the five of us to do a worthwhile show, so we actively pursued this gig.” And while this might be the final chance to see the band, Bush isn’t so sure.

ll appearances suggest 2012 was a busy year for Philadelphia-based experimental guitarist Chris Forsyth. In the span of 12 months, he managed to record and release three full lengths, perform at South by Southwest in Austin, complete two tours and collaborate with choreographer Meg Foley and lighting designer Lenore Doxsee on an installation piece titled The whole time in the meanwhile, which begins its run this week in the city. But, for him, this frenetic whirl of activity is really nothing unusual.

Since emerging on the fringes of the Brooklyn experimental music scene in the early 2000s with such units as the drone-heavy All Time Present and the confrontational improvisational trio Peeesseye, Forsyth has always been something of a prolific dude. But when Peeesseye dissolved a couple years ago, he started to question the idea of playing music in the New York area. “I realized that there wasn’t much holding me there anymore, except this vague feeling that New York City is the center of the universe,” Forsyth recalls. “I looked at my life and realized I actually stood a better chance of building a life around the things that I do—putting out records, touring small venues, collaborating with other kinds of artists—almost anywhere besides New York City, especially if I wanted to have a family and a somewhat sane lifestyle. So, when my wife got a job offer in Bucks County, we jumped. I grew up and went to college around New Brunswick, N.J., and spent a fair amount of time coming to Philly in the early ‘90s. Tons of shows at the Khyber Pass and all the Siltbreeze fests.”

Upon landing here, Forsyth fell in with the subterranean sect that revolved around the acid folk ensemble Espers. He also struck up a friendship with the city’s sadly departed adopted son of folk guitar, Jack Rose. The combination of the new sonic environment and being out of the N.Y.C. pressure cooker saw Forsyth’s playing move away from the prying tension of his previous work and into a more lyrical and linear approach to the guitar. “I don’t think Philly has brought out anything that wasn’t already there,” Forsyth says. “In a way, I was returning to some approaches that I’d abandoned in the late ‘90s.

But I was fortunate to fall in with Jack Rose and a number of people around him, all of whom had—and have—strong opinions and omnivorous musical knowledge. I think it gave me the confidence to re-incorporate more overtly rock statements into what I do

and to be comfortable with that.”

Forsyth’s first “overtly rock statement” was the 2011 full length Paranoid Cat, a sprawling batch of ass-kicking, instrumental psychedelic rock tracks recorded with a full band consisting of members of Boston’s Sunburned Hand of the Man and New York’s D. Charles Speer and the Helix. Last year, he released the beautifully celestial-like Early Astral, a duo album with electronic artist Koen Holtkamp, as well as the entirely solo Kenzo Deluxe, the title an obvious homage to the part of town in which Forsyth dwells.

But sneak listens to his upcoming LP, Solar Motel—another full band recording conceived at the studio of Philly’s go-to weirdo producer, Jeff Ziegler—hint that the best has yet to be heard. Solar Motel is broken up into four suites of music, each one of them escalating in sequence with head-swelling psychedelic bliss while showcasing Forsyth’s equal admiration for the guitar interplay of both Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd from Television and Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead. It serves as a perfect example for what Forsyth calls his music: cosmic Americana.

“I didn’t actually come up with it,” he admits. “I think someone used that term in a review of Paranoid Cat, and I liked it, so I took it. It reminded me of Gram Parson’s concept

of ‘cosmic American music.’ Everything that I do kind of grows out of a lineage that can be traced back to the blues, that whole American stew. I’ve toured in Europe quite a bit, and people over there love to hear a bent note in a certain way, and part of it might be that they mostly can’t do it themselves with proper conviction. The whole primitive American thing—and I don’t just mean American primitive—is attractive to them.

I’m not nationalistic in a political sense, but I started to realize that I really am an American musician, and my experiences mostly come from the musical history of this country. America is insane and beautiful, and it’s birthed all this amazing art, mostly from the ground up. As for the cosmic part, well, music preceded math, science and literature.

Everything comes from music. It’s got magic knowledge in it.”

If any piece of music in Forsyth’s catalog proves those sentiments to be true, it’s Solar Motel. I’ll be waiting to hear it. ENLIGHTENED Sundays, 9:30pm, HBO Captive audience: Disenchanted middle-aged folk; the six or seven people who saw Year of the Dog. Moment of truth: It seems HBO is now the home for shows about selfdeluded women who think they have their shit together, but so don’t.

Along with the acclaimed, award-winning Girls and Veep, there is also this dramedy, with Laura Dern (who co-created the show with co-star and School of Rock screenwriter Mike White) as a quietly unhinged yet incessantly optimistic woman intent on taking down the corrupt company that demoted her. Just like Girls and Veep, it’s a show you may admire more than like. However, it also might definitely hit a nerve with folks who wonder where their lives are going.

Emmy or phlegmmy: Emmy. (Craig D. Lindsey)

SECOND GENERATION WAYANS Tuesdays, 10:30pm, BET Captive audience: People who always wondered what Entourage would look like with black dudes; the six or seven people who saw A Haunted House.

Moment of truth: See if you can follow this: Wayans family offspring Damien and Craig Wayans have their own show where they bitch about how hard it is getting work as Wayans family offspring. (I don’t hear Happy Endings star Damon Wayans, Jr. complaining.) In this strokefest, they go into business for themselves, starting a production company where they can write, produce and star in projects—kinda like this one! It’s funny how this show follows Real Husbands of Hollywood, where Kevin Hart (who appeared in the pilot) makes fun of the self-entitled, self-congratulatory arrogance these two are excelling at.

Emmy or phlegmmy: Phlegmmy. (C.D.L.)

ARCHER Thursdays, 10pm, FX Captive audience: Basically, people who always wished Get Smart would’ve had more profanity, off-color jokes and people yelling at each other.

Moment of truth: TV’s most caustic, deranged and just-plain-wrong cartoon spy show doesn’t lose an inch of its step as it begins its fourth season. Hell, the first five minutes of the premiere alone has its secretagent asshole of a title character flipping burgers and serving as a family man over at the burger joint from Bob’s Burgers. (H. Jon Benjamin, who voices Archer, also voices the titular character from that other awesome, animated show.) Things only get zanier, louder and more unhinged in future episodes—and, God help me, I love every ferociously fucked-up minute of it.

Designer Christopher Haig’s starkly simple wooden set honors the modesty of the Amish culture in Jessica Dickey’s timely, brave play. But when the lights came up on Janice Rowland, the guilt kicked in—I couldn’t help but think: “We have an actress attempting to tackle seven characters, but she’s mastered maybe three?”

Most memorable moment: Rowland’s attempts to portray America—a young, unwed, pregnant Latina—says “cliché of a cliché,” right? If only Dickey had interviewed real people connected with the West Nickel Mines School tragedy the same way Anna Deveare Smith interviewed observers of the 1991 race riots in N.Y.C.’s Crown Heights for her solo show, Fires in the Mirrors. Facts beat out fiction any day.

Scene stealer: In a solo show, when a performer has to take on many roles, they must start from a neutral place, but alas, Rowland was never given that chance: She wears traditional Amish dress and bonnet the entire show.

On stage, the devil is in the details: A crucifix hangs imposed upon an ancient stone wall of this hillside cottage, and a naked light bulb shines over the stove, revealing the rancor of the daily life of Maureen Folan and her mother, Mag. Most memorable moment: Megan Bellwoar is at her most powerful as Maureen, in the wee hours of the morning, barefoot, free of the bonds of domestic inertia in her loveliest skin-tight velvet black dress, dancing on the tips of her toes in her mother’s cottage, delivering her own declaration of independence: “To Boston! To Boston! I’ll be going ... ” Scene stealer: It’s a toss-up. Martin McDonagh’s Beauty Queen pivots around Charlie DelMarcelle’s sweet baby blues, but Barrymore Awardwinner Mary Martello is so at home in her bathrobe, she barely has to raise her eyelids to dominate a scene.
