ecause making one online video response to an anti-fracking movie is never enough, the Independent Petroleum Association of America’s public relations firm has released a series of pro-hydraulic fracturing and natural gas vignettes they’re calling “The Real Promised Land.”

The videos, whose titles play on the new Matt Damon movie Promised Land, which arrived in theaters this past weekend, feature a series of people from three states— including Pennsylvania—who’ve benefited from the sweet, sweet nectar that is natural gas from the shattered earth.

It’s the second time the gas industry’s international PR firm, Energy In Depth, has created such a project to combat antifracking worries in the media. (The first, “Truthland,” was a response to filmmaker Josh Fox’s Academy Award-nominated documentary Gasland, which came out in 2010.) The vignettes from Pennsylvania focus on the boon to local businesses, such as a trout hatchery and hotel that have thrived in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania since the gas boom.

“With the most recent recession, we haven’t even known there’s been a recession,” says trout hatchery owner Dr. Daniel Williams, who’s interviewed in front of a water cooler

with a stethoscope around his neck. “The amount of economic activity, job availability, people who have the availability to go to work on a regular basis has dramatically improved. I think there’s a lot of general excitement in the community.”

According to StateImpact Pennsylvania, a reporting project of National Public Radio focused on Pennsylvania’s shale gas industry, there are currently 74 gas drilling operators conducting business throughout the state. They’ve drilled 8,982 wells in 38 counties around the state and have received massive support from Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett.

Promised Land is a fictionalized account of two salespeople who travel to an economically depressed rural town looking to lease out land for drilling. The gas industry’s new videos (and related “fact sheets”) comprised a preemptive strike against the Hollywood film, which so far has received mediocre-to-bad reviews, including the one from PW’s Sean Burns that calls the film’s third act “jaw-droppingly stupid and illogical, negating what little goodwill we were able to hunt for here before.”

One year ago, MilkBoy moved its multifaceted music empire back into the city after a decade in the ‘burbs.

And owners Tommy Joyner and Jamie Lokoff aren’t just recording albums by R. Kelly and Miley Cyrus— they’re navigating the complicated new realities of the music biz.

By Bill Chenevert // Photography by Kyle Cassidy // feedback@philadelphiaweekly.com here’s a book that Tommy Joyner and Jamie Lokoff couldn’t live without back in the mid-’90s, in their early days as budding music-studio mavens after launching MilkBoy Recording in North Philadelphia.

It was called The Studio Business Book, and they turned to it constantly: when they had questions about how to plan their operations, how to charge for their services, how to keep track of the money. It wasn’t that they were clueless—they’d already weathered the challenges of working as musicians themselves—but now they were figuring out, as they went along, just how tough the business was on the other side of the studio.

So if their copy of The Studio Business Book’s second edition was stained and beat up, well, it came by its condition honestly.

Which made it a damned pleasant surprise when, years later, they were contacted by the publishers to be profiled themselves in the third edition—showcased as a successful studio, offering advice to the next generation, answering 20 questions on where they’d come from and where they were going. It was the warmest pat on the back they could imagine. Because Joyner and Lokoff didn’t spend two decades building a music mini-empire just because they dug working with microphones and sound levels. They did it because they love helping

people—music people—do better.

“The studio business isn’t just about gear,” Joyner says. “It’s about the experience. We try to make [musicians] feel good while they’re here. We try to make them feel as comfortable and relaxed and inspired as possible, so that they can create the best possible version of themselves on tape. And if they do it well, that makes more people want to come here.”

This month marks the first anniversary of MilkBoy’s move to its new Center City recording studio on Seventh Street adjacent to the Electric Factory, a facility formerly called simply The Studio. Before they took it over, it was already arguably the greatest studio in Philadelphia. Now that it’s MilkBoy the Studio? There’s no argument.

Those who know MilkBoy primarily at street level, who identify the name with its two coffee shop/live-music venues in Ardmore and Center City, may be surprised to learn that its behind-the-scenes business as a destination recording studio for hit musicians the world ‘round is the older, larger part of the operation. After spending the ‘90s in a space above Zapf’s Music in North Philly, Joyner and Lokoff moved to a bigger studio in Ardmore, where they thrived for more than a decade, hosting recording sessions by

the likes of Dave Matthews as well as countless smaller, independent acts.

In 2005, deciding an all-ages performance venue would be a logical addition to the company, they opened the homey MilkBoy Coffee in Ardmore. Slowly but surely, they came to realize that long-term success and stability for a live-music scene would be found in the city itself, and in 2011, they built MilkBoy’s slick café at 11th and Chestnut, blending coffee shop and bar beneath a second-story performance space.

And just as they were getting ready to open the new joint’s doors, Larry Gold came knocking.

To many, Gold needs no introduction; he’s a Philly music institution. A lifelong Philadelphian who grew up toting a cello around Kensington—”I had cellos kicked in, I had my face kicked in,” he laments—and whose talent was nurtured at the Curtis Institute, Gold became a mainstay in the Gamble & Huff orbit. As a member of their house band, MFSB, he parlayed his ear for strings and arrangements into a career as a producer. After more than a dozen years working in a handful of studios around the city, Gold moved into The Studio on Seventh Street in 1996.

There, he fostered quite a stable of talent.

“For years, people came from outta town,” he recalls—but after hometown heroes The

Roots finally decided to make The Studio their recording home, what followed was a parade of musicians Gold humbly calls “a little scene” before acknowledging: “It was almost a who’s who in R&B and rap.” The Studio is decked out with record plaques honoring the smashing success of some of the work that’s passed through: Justin Timberlake, Jill Scott, Jazmine Sullivan, Dru Hill, 702. Gold didn’t just provide the studio, either; he did instrumental arrangements for lots of those sessions.

After running the operation for 15 years, though, he “got tired of the hustle.” To be more pointed: “I got tired of losing money.”

Like so many other media-related industries, the music business has changed a lot in the past decade and a half. As Gold saw retirement age on the horizon, he realized he was eager to think less about evolving business models and more about enjoying time with his daughter’s family in Brooklyn.

Having MilkBoy take over The Studio looked like a win-win: Joyner and Lokoff would get a better facility near their new venue, as well as the established clientele that came with it, and Gold would still get to arrange strings for projects here and there.

So far, it’s worked like a dream. Since MilkBoy moved in, Gold has watched their work with admiration, and only taken on instrumental

Like, you know, for R. Kelly. And P!nk. And Lana Del Rey. Joyner and Lokoff’s office is a massive, lofted-ceiling room with desks that face each other. They’ve made a few minor but significant aesthetic changes to Gold’s former setup. “We painted the walls, stripped the floors, re-did the lounge area,” says Lokoff, “and, literally, those three things changed the whole vibe of the place.” In some ways, he says, it feels almost as though they’re in the hospitality business: “Our ability to cater to people and the artists that come here— it’s like we put a new wing on, or a sauna, or a new pool, and it makes their experience here better. Our rate has gone up, and our client list has gotten to be more high-profile.”

Meek Mill was in the studio a couple weeks ago. Before that, it was Miley Cyrus, Florence + The Machine, Trey Songz, Lil’ Wayne. Whereas in Ardmore, MilkBoy earned a reputation for fostering independent, local talent, that wasn’t Gold’s focus at The Studio. But Lokoff and Joyner have never shied away from the necessity of an evolving business model, and it’s not as though they’d ever particularly strived to be “indie.” In fact, what’s most defined their success, especially over the last year, is their willingness to diversify and seek business outside of the obvious realm of straightforward music production.

That’s because, with the advent of Spotify, Pandora, Songza, Slacker Radio and the like, the studio business is one of the many facets of the music industry that’s been left reeling as it looks for alternative sources of income.

As new technologies allow more and more musicians to self-record at home, professional studios are often seen as only a necessary finishing touch. “Now people tend to start and finish records here,” Joyner says, “and they can do a lot quietly at home with headphones, and then they’ll come back to mix.”

On the other hand, he says, “There’s bands like Pissed Jeans that come in and record a record in six days, and then Alex Newport takes it back to his studio in Brooklyn to mix it.” So if a studio’s rates aren’t competitive and the space doesn’t feel welcoming, musicians will simply find someone else to do the job.

Assimilating The Studio’s business into their own, Joyner says, has been a game changer in terms of MilkBoy’s profile—and yet in some ways, they still live like artists: “We’re project to project and paycheck to paycheck.” That’s why, on the practical side of things, it’s been key for MilkBoy to embrace what many studios are slow to realize: Commercial work is crucial. That means a variety of different sorts of jobs; for instance, Joyner and Lokoff have eagerly taken on numerous music-related assignments for projects airing on the Discovery HD television channel.

“We worked on a lot of films,” Joyner says, “either writing the music or post-production, and sometimes music supervising, placing music in films.”

Last month, for instance, they wrote commercial music for Under Armour and Planet Fitness. Joyner says they’re hoping to write more. Record producers or not, they don’t find anything to be embarrassed about in it—in fact, it’s kind of a perfect blend of their respective talents, as Joyner composes and

Lokoff produces. “We’re in the studio making music, having fun and being creative,” Joyner says.

One thing they’ve taken on that’s caught some local media attention is their involvement in a couple independent feature films with Philly pedigrees. They served as music supervisors on Lebanon, PA, which has done pretty darn well for a small fiilm: It’s available on Blu-Ray, iTunes and Netflix and got a Showtime premiere just last week. Filmmaker Josh Bickernell, a local media mainstay, wrote and directed the charming indie, whose website boils it down to: “[A] bittersweet comic drama tenderly explores the cultural divide in America through the lives of one extended family.”

Then there’s Tammy Tiehel-Stedman, a Philly-suburbs-raised producer who won an Academy Award in 1999 for her work on the short film My Mother Dreams the Satan’s Disciples in New York. She’d wanted to work with Joyner and Lokoff for years, but wasn’t sure just how. Then Bad Boys Crazy Girls came around—a film whose script she’s licensed from New York writer Heather Maidat’s story of two unlucky co-workers tired of feeling jilted by lovers who opt for the crazier and badder versions of themselves. They try to help each other become crazier and badder in turn, and—well, we’ll have to see what happens to them. The film’s in pre-production now, and the MilkBoy guys are suddenly not just music producers for film, they’re film producers. “We’re involved,” Lokoff says.

“We’re one of four producers locally and [we’re looking at] a $1.5 million budget to produce it.”

With a vibrant new Center City nightlife venue, a storied Philadelphia recording space, a deep client sheet for commercial work and now a foot into the filmmaking world, MilkBoy’s got as sophisticated a grasp on the entertainment world of 2013 as any small company around. It’d be no surprise if venues and studios both in and beyond Philly try to replicate MilkBoy’s model for success, looking for ways that distinct arms of their business can profitably harmonize.

Larry Gold’s been doing a lot of reading lately. He just finished re-reading Don DeLillo’s American Pastoral, which he picked up again after chatting about it with a MilkBoy intern, a Princeton man who loves books as much as he does. Gold finds some irony in that. “They have interns 24/7,” he marvels. “I never had an intern in my life. They have an inclusivity—I had an exclusivity. I didn’t want anybody coming and bothering the Roots or Jill Scott. Or bothering me. I wanted this space to be just about making music.”

MilkBoy the Studio is still all about music, of course. It’s just that as the old recording industry falters, Joyner and Lokoff are figuring out what the new one needs to look like and how to keep doing what they love— record, produce, compose, play, showcase, nurture and facilitate creativity—while earning a living along the way. Various venues throughout the country will host competitions judging DJs on various aspects: tracks, creativity, mixing, performance and reactions from the crowd. Those who make it through the first round will go on to regionals and a national competition this April in L.A. As a competing DJ, you will be given 15 minutes to play three tracks from different genres—keep the crowd dancing, try your best to win, pick up a prize and head on through to the next round.

THE THREE STOOGES: HOLLYWOOD FILMING LOCATIONS

The story goes that the Three Stooges spent 23 years unaware of the exact hugeness of their popularity. While stationed at Columbia Pictures during their Golden Years, studio president Harry Cohn lied to them about their box-office prowess, not only to keep their salaries down but to scare them into not leaving for literally greener pastures. Comedy shorts, despite their success, were never treated with the respect of their serious and/or long-form counterparts, and so documentation on their making is scarce. So kudos to Stooge expert Jim Pauley: his new book The Three Stooges: Hollywood Filming Locations—the result of years of obsessive detective work—IDs the areas of Los Angeles that served as Moe, Larry, Curly, Shemp et al.’s various playgrounds when they weren’t confined to the Columbia lots. For the latest Secret Cinema event, Pauley will present a live presentation of his extensive findings.

Remember the early 2000s? More specifically, remember when every band from New York seemed to discover that their city was, in fact, responsible for Blondie, Television and a host of other notable post-punk darlings? Most attention was squandered on upstart bands like the Strokes or Interpol, who proved over time that they didn’t have all that much to say. For a band whose best-known tune is “Stoned and Starving,” Parquet Courts bring a surprising amount of tension. Musically, their songs bristle with an early ‘80s-style barb-mesh of spiky guitar stabs. Their lyrics come in strident bursts, barked in a stinging monotone by band leader Andrew Savage, who falls vocally somewhere between Mark E. Smith and Jonathan Richman. Savage, you might remember from Fergus & Geronimo, a slyly confrontational, genre-mixing lo-fi pop outfit that emerged from Denton, Texas in 2011. His new project, relocated to Brooklyn, is more focused, abrasive and single-mindedly stripped down. For visual interest, you’ll have to get what you can from bassist Sean Yeaton’s mop-shaking bob or sporadic scissor kicks from frontman Savage. Instead, you’re left to meditate on the songs, which are as sharp and vitriolic as tunes about donuts, joints and Disney can be. JENNIFER KELLY

Drawing on his extensive research in so-called primitive cultures in the Pacific islands, Africa, North and South America, Diamond comes up with a startling and humbling thesis: While modern life has many undeniable medical, scientific and technological marvels, premodern peoples exceed us in how they treated the elderly, resolved conflicts, left no carbon footprints and raised happy, less-isolated children.

There are not many MCs who can pull off wearing a purple mink coat, but for Cam’ron, it’s just a weekday. Founder of the Diplomats (aka Dipset), as well as the artist behind many early ‘00s hits, such as “Oh Boy” and “Hey Ma,” Cam’ron has been rocking some pretty outlandish threads for years now, and good for him. (Frankly, hiphop needs more Easter Bunny furs.) Killa Cam’s career has had a long road, beginning in the early ‘90s with Children of the Corn, a horrorcore group—remember horrorcore?—with Big L and Mase—remember Mase?—before signing a deal with Epic Records. Along the way, he’s had beefs with Jay-Z, Kanye and 50 Cent (Hey, who hasn’t?), plus jump-started the career of his protégé Juelz Santana. Can you believe it’s been almost 40 years since Rocky Balboa first took his famed jog up the steps of the Art Museum, spawning one of the most iconic film series of all time? Norristown’s Centre Theater wastes no time getting busy in 2013 with the company’s 4th annual Independent Voices Festival—an event that spotlights solo plays featuring the region’s top writer-performers. Not every play is performed by the playwright (a notable exception is Howard Zinn’s wonderfully engaging Marx in Soho, featuring Bob Weick in an immersive portrayal of philosopher Karl Marx) but one that does star the creator is Chris Davis’ innovative Drunk Lion.

Writer-performer Davis’ solo play focuses on an alcoholic lion whiling away his time drinking in a Mexican cantina, where he is interrupted by a young foreigner attempting to learn Spanish.

Performed by Davis in both Spanish and English, the play is a unique exploration of languages, loss and liquor. At 8 p.m., Bill Hollenbach’s biographical drama Citizen Paine—starring Adam Altman as the patriot Thomas Paine—focuses on Paine’s life and humanistic ideals as he waits anxiously for the New Rochelle government to determine if he has the right to vote. If you are a healthy person, age 18 – 50, who does not use tobacco, you may be eligible to participate in a University of Pennsylvania research study.

Volunteers are needed for a research study evaluating a new technology to study genes that have been shown in other studies to be related to risk factors for heart and blood vessel disease. One 2-hour outpatient visit at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is required.

Qualified participants who complete the study visit will be compensated $75 for time and travel.

The concert is noteworthy for two reasons. First, it presents new music in a nontraditional setting, and, second, Higdon will be there, no small feat for an in-demand artist whose calendar is booked years in advance with commissions and premieres. Higdon’s music is characterized by a strong sense of melody and brisk rhythms, two elements that make her work accessible to listeners. Two of her pieces, “Secret and Glass Gardens” and “Sonata for Viola and Piano,” will be performed by the pianist ChingYun Hu, a young Taiwanese musician whose work is garnering favorable accolades, and the violist Judy Geist, whose tenure with the Philadelphia Orchestra stretches back to the early 1980s. A VIP reception prior to the show offers attendees the opportunity to mingle with the artists, all of whom will be available after the concert to engage listeners in wide-ranging conversations regarding their work.

Flat-track or banked-track, these sexy skaters are ready to roll. This recruiting season, PJRD is reaching out to the LGBT community, which has long provided players and a devoted coterie of queer fans. The league welcomes everyone, teaching newbies all they need to know about skating, as well as blocking, hitting and jamming. Women on the allfemale team, the She Devils, learned how to mix it up from their late coach, Judy Sowinski, a roller derby legend and proud lesbian who kicked ass during the tumultuous televised bouts of the ’60s and ’70s. Although roller derby is traditionally viewed as a women’s sport, these fierce femmes actively nurture a men’s team, the Hooligans. At practice, everyone scrimmages together, with the girls hitting the boys and the boys fighting back as best they can. Suited up for a bout, they’re an intimidating lot, but off the rink, PJRD’s ranks include everyone from accountants to roofers, both gay and straight. This close-knit bunch also has a penchant for naughty hijinks like Jell-O

The openly queer artist was initially tagged as a folkie simply because she was a girl with a guitar, but her musical output belies that label. Over the course of eight records, this sprightly trickster has adapted her lyrical concerns and musical ideas to forms as varied as Christmas novelty tunes and rollicking swing. At the same time, the Brown University graduate has also been developing a parallel career as an activist, focusing on the social impact of technology. McKeown’s music converges with a personal brand of politics on her latest record, MANIFESTRA. In a sense, it’s a protest record, but McKeown’s obvious pleasure in collaborating with colleagues like singer-songwriter Polly Paulusma and bluesy troubadour Ryan Montbleau balances her righteousness. The album’s closing number, “Baghdad to the Bayou,” was co-written via text message with MSNBC host Rachel Maddow, an old friend and fellow denizen of Western Massachusetts. A funky New Orleans groove helps the song transcend that gimmick, which is good, because its holistic take on everything from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to America’s continuing military involvement in the Middle East is worth hearing.

an-fried dumplings are usually such a bore. Years of gnashing through them—often doughy little triangles, frequently from a box in the freezer, stuffed with a mash of unidentifiable vegetables with about as much verve as Mitch McConnell after a shot of Benadryl—has led to my current Pavlovian response, which is to order them as a control group of sorts, just to see if the meal that’s about to begin has a chance of being remotely interesting.

So to say that Baan Thai’s were an auspicious beginning would be an understatement. The generous green dumplings arrived still sizzling from their stint in the oil, a lacy, intricate carapace of wafer-thin happiness clinging to their sides. The usual veg-mush was replaced by a joyous gathering of water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, leeks and shiitakes, all of it homemade, all of it infinitely better than the majority of what you’ll taste elsewhere. They didn’t even need the soy sauce. When’s the last time that happened?

Attention to the minute differences in flavor and texture are what lift many of the dishes here above the fray. Samantha Marsh, who owned two Thai restaurants before Baan Thai (one in Bangkok and another in California), takes the food she serves personally; even the Thai lemon leaves, galangal, lemongrass and other herbs are grown by her and her sister in, of all places, Levittown.

Personal touches like that lead to a real sense of intimacy with this food.

Ped yang was anchored by sliced barbecued duck with skin so crispy it reminded me of some kind of perfect hybrid between Peking duck and fried chicken. The meat itself played well off its ginger sauce, and the portion size was more than generous. Kang-dang red curry found the happy intersection of creaminess from coconut milk and perfectly dialed-in spice from the curry paste. The result was a dish that kept evolving throughout each individual bite, the first impression lush and almost fruity, then building to a pleasant sizzle that never overwhelmed. The pork swimming in this gorgeous liquid could have been cooked a minute less, but the curry itself was distractingly good enough to atone for that.

Rad-nar—tender, slippery flat rice noodles—are listed as being topped with a homemade “gravy,” a word that I’ve rarely experienced having been used so accurately as it is here. This was a gravy in the old-school sense, meaty, glistening and built from a stock that’s boiled down each morning. A nuanced, clear-flavored tom yum, rooted in a homemade chicken stock, also benefitted from the kitchen’s DIY insistence.

There were also a number of standouts that are usually toss-aways at too many other restaurants. The peanut dressing for another salad, for instance, was stunning—a simple blend of peanut sauce, ground peanut, coconut milk and spices whose identities I was told are secret. A dessert of warm, sweet sticky rice, each grain translucent and toothsome, was joined, as it so often is, by slices of fresh mango, its own coolness contributing to a vibrating sense of tension with each bite. Coconut pudding was a bi-layered gem, four little cups filled with a bottom of jiggly, almost gelatinous pudding and a sweeter coconut crown. Even the Thai iced tea, with its condensed milk floating on top like some kind of nonalcoholic Irish coffee, was anchored by deeply steeped tea whose tannic bitterness was a genius foil for the sweet lactic cap.

Occasionally, however, those successes were undercut by what seems to be the most common sin among Thai restaurants in this country: Lean-

ing too heavily on sweetness as a defining flavor characteristic. This happened with the cucumber salad, whose overt sugariness made more than a few bites difficult. More vinegar was needed, a bit of heat—anything, really, to cut the cloying sweetness of the syrup the cucumbers were served in. But if that one Achilles’ heel can be bandaged and healed, Baan Thai shows real promise.

As does the space: It’s an attractive, calming room with a lovely flower motif throughout. Rich wood-toned floors, tables covered by stippled synthetic cloths like Chilewich curtains, the linearity of it all lent life by pretty white vases with flowers sprouting from their tops.

It’s a clean-lined, appealing setting for a restaurant with soul to spare. ■

Center City’s newest Pan-Asian joint is raising the bar for this part of town. While the dishes are mostly familiar, they’re somehow more memorable, like the beef rendang: rich cubes of beef soaked for hours in coconut milk and finally caramelized to perfection. Or the popcorn rock shrimp; don’t let the small size fool you, these little undersea invertebrates boast a big flavor, with the most well fried carapace I’ve had in a while. El Loco Pez seems to be a nice middle ground where all people can feel comfortable. It’s a bar with a sense of inclusion, humor ... and damn good tacos and drinks.

Carne asada was the most familiar, the short ribs tender and deeply seasoned with cumin, as well as Worcestershire and soy. Taco al pastor is nearly halfway between dinner and dessert, the distinct whiff of cinnamon and clove in the tender chunks of pork combine with the pineapple in ways that are distinctly reminiscent of an old-school pineapple upside-down cake. Order two of these. The menu encourages overconsumption. On the drink tip: The margarita at El Loco Pez is a balanced gem, neither teeth-suckingly tart nor cavity-causing sweet. For something more adventurous, check out the Monte Carlo, whose sweetly perfumed hibiscus water is balanced out by an in-house infusion of tequila and chipotle. Simple food prepared with confidence and care, and served in an atmosphere that’s welcoming and un-selfconsciously cool. (Brian Freedman)

By Nicole Finkbiner // nfinkbiner@philadelphiaweekly.com hanks to Stephen Starr and his trendy Center City cantina El Rey, I’ve had a rather intense hankering for Mexican fare the past few weeks. More specifically, I blame their queso fundido, a simple yet sumptuous combination of poblanos (chili peppers) and chorizo (sausage) swimming in fondue-style melted Chihuahua cheese (orgasm). Sadly, the only Mexican dishes in my own culinary repertoire are half-assed tacos—no lettuce, no pico de gallo, no sour cream; just beef, shredded “fiesta” cheese and taco seasoning—and Jose Ole’s frozen taquitos, the best microwaveable food you can ask for in 60 seconds.

So, needless to say, I was pretty pumped when the big cheese over at El Rey, Chef Dionicio Jimenez, agreed to teach me a more exciting alternative.

Or any alternative, really. Even better, since the restaurant is known for very basic, traditional Mexican dishes— along with a few creative specialties— Dionicio had no qualms about sharing the exact recipes for two of the most popular items on his menu: chilaquiles and chicken enchiladas.

I showed up dressed like an official member of the El Rey wait staff in jeans and a flannel shirt—then stepped inside their kitchen, smelled all the seasoned meats and spicy sauces around me, and watched my hopes of blending in fly right out the window. I was more like a tourist seeing food for the first time. (Seriously, though, Glade should consider releasing a home fragrance line capturing the array of mouthwatering scents inside that kitchen. I’d never leave my house again.)

For readers who aren’t familiar with El Rey’s chilaquiles and chicken enchiladas, allow me to cut to the chase: They’re freakin’ awesome. For those who already know this, you’re probably thinking it’s weird that we would be cooking these dishes together, and you’re half right. As Dionicio notes, chilaquiles are typically served for breakfast or brunch. “My mother used to make it every Saturday and Sunday,” he reminisces. But since both items require an almost identical set of ingredients— particularly, salsa verde—they’re kinda like a two-for-one special. Unless you’re throwing a fiesta, making only one of

these dishes at a time will leave you with a lot of remaining ingredients. So you make the chilaquiles for breakfast and the enchiladas for lunch or dinner.

(Whip up a little extra salsa, buy some tortilla chips, and bam—you’ve got yourself a perfect late night snack, too.

And Dionicio notes that, when cooking enchiladas at home, he’ll often add potatoes, corn and more veggies to the leftover stock to make chicken soup for later. So maybe they’re really more of a four-for-one special. ) Of course, having to prepare both dishes simultaneously was a tad overwhelming. And given that I only know about 20 Spanish words, I’m fairly certain a few things got lost in translation along the way. But breaking the recipes down step by step, I was surprised just how straightforward and versatile they were. So versatile, in fact, that Dionicio even left several of the executive cooking decisions up to me: When given the option to fry or boil the tortilla chips, I opted for the fryer. When given the option of making either chicken or beef enchiladas, I chose chicken.

When asked whether the salsa needed another jalapeño, I said, “Hells yeah, throw that bad boy in!”

Instead of barking a lot of specific instructions, Dionicio emphasized the

various ways the dishes can be tailored: If you like a thicker salsa, use less water when blending the veggies. If you want the salsa to maintain its bright green color, let the tomatillos cool before blending them; otherwise, the mixture will immediately turn brown. If you want to spruce up the chilaquiles, add steak or chicken. He also made sure to note the different substitutions you can use: mozzarella instead of Chihuahua cheese, sour cream instead of Mexican crema, ricotta instead of queso fresco.

Personally, I think you’d be a damn fool to mess with the recipe—especially to replace the richer, creamier Chihuahua cheese with regular ol’ mozzarella. Even the egg topping on the chilaquiles, which I found off-putting in theory, wound up being the highlight of the dish. If I had to muster up any sort of complaint, it would be that the tortilla chips were already soggy by the time I got to dig into the chilaquiles.

ne of theater’s greatest, grandest musicals of all time, Les Miserables can currently be seen in Philadelphia on both stage and screen. Even better: Both the film and live versions are excellent, especially the magnificent 25th-anniversary stage production playing to packed houses at the Academy of Music through Jan. 13. It is a heavenly time to be a Les Mis fan.

Film and theater are entirely different mediums, and comparing Les Mis’s current incarnations is difficult—and perhaps unfair. That said, with the possible exception of Hugh Jackman’s performance as hero Jean Valjean, in every case, the singing on stage at the Academy is far superior to the vocals featured in the Tom Hooper film. (Unlike other Broadway musicals at the Academy that have suffered sound problems, the acoustics for Les Mis are crisp, clear and sumptuous.) In fact, the Academy’s is the best-sung version of Les Miserables I have ever seen; that’s the chief reason why you should start clicking, scrolling, calling, tweeting or taking whatever action you must to obtain a ticket to experience this triumphant production from co-directors Laurence Connor and James Powell.

Peter Lockyer gives a yeoman’s performance as Valjean, doggedly pursued by determined constable Javert (played by the stunning Andrew Varela), who has sworn to return Valjean to prison, but the cast’s excellence is not the only reason that Connor and Powell’s Les Miserables is so successful. Most touring musicals typically do nothing more than faithfully remount the original production, a cookie-cutter approach that often results in a show that has all the imagination of a scared, unprepared understudy. The Academy’s version, however, is unlike any that has come before it, with new staging and—most importantly—brilliant scenic design from Matt Kinley, inspired by the paintings of Les Miserables author Victor Hugo. Kinley’s design allows us to be nearly as engaged visually as we are aurally.

Projected behind the actors, lush visuals are superbly integrated with the actors’ movements, as well as the adaptable structures in Kinley’s design—which, besides the legendary barricade, include an ingenious three-story structure that

represents the various rundown buildings in Paris’ slums. Besides clarifying locations, providing atmosphere and giving the action an added sense of movement (including some nifty 3-D effects), the dark and, at times, effectively abstract images powerfully evoke the bleak surroundings of the urban poor.

Giant smokestacks billowing blackened clouds that hang in the air add to the cramped, vile conditions in the ghettos of the industrial age, where factory employees literally work themselves to death, their lungs and souls polluted by soot and abhorrent working conditions.

It’s the sort of cesspool that we usually associate with Dickens’ London, and it gives Les Miserables a social commentary it previously lacked. Instead of only depressing us, however, the poverty also heightens our empathy for little Cosette (Lauren Wiley) as she sings about a magical “Castle on the Cloud” while slaving for her cruel foster parents. The desperation is even more keenly felt during Fantine’s (Genevieve Leclerc) anguished “I Dreamed a Dream” and when Eponine (Briana Carlson-Goodman) moves the audience to tears with “On My Own,” her song about unrequited love. As the relentless Javert, Varela is superb communicating a man whose moral certitude is destroyed when he witnesses the murder of a young boy at the hands of soldiers. In one of the production’s most stunning scenes, Varela delivers a

commanding rendition of the thrilling “Stars” as he prays to a pitch black sky before one of the musical’s most potent scenes, which uses technology to produce a moment of theatrical bravado that, ironically, humanizes the obsessive inspector.

Regrettably, though, the Academy of Music does not employ a turntable stage—for years, the show’s signature piece of theatrical magic. It’s a problem that neither Les Mis producer Cameron Mackintosh nor his talented co-directors have satisfactorily solved, particularly when it comes to staging the death of a key character at the barricades. The solution utilized here is both contrived and confusing, and while the projections and new scenic design are visually compelling, the missing turntable stage and actions associated with it are nonetheless missed. Still, anthems like “Do You Hear the People Sing” and “One Day More” still provide as many thrills as they have for the last quarter-century.

In an act of true gluttony, go see the film and stage productions of Les Miserables back-to-back on the same day. Despite the overwhelmingly bleak imagery, Abrams’repetitive back-and-forth between life and death, beauty and filth, ultimately leaves the viewer with a vague sense of optimism.

The same cannot be said, however, of artist, Instagram enthusiast and Camden firefighter Gabriel Angemi. Perhaps not surprising given his line of work, Angemi paints an unflinchingly grim portrait of the city with one vacant, graffiti-covered building after another, usually with a lone soul walking past or slumped over on the front stoop. Among his pictures, there’s really not a single discernible shred of charm.

By the time you approach the final body of work—a stylized assortment of found oddities by local photographer Jay Muhlin—the absence of human life feels almost refreshing.

If you have a dark sense of humor, you’ll have an even greater appreciation for his miscellaneous discoveries, which include a car covered in bird droppings with a pissing Calvin decal ironically affixed to the rear window.

While one might instinctively attempt to dissect the exhibition as a whole, you’re likely to take away a thousand different interpretations. After all, the participating artists weren’t given any sort of arbitrary guidelines. Rather, they simply explored their surrounding environment, photographing the places and faces that compelled them. It just so happens that during those 99 days, these six artists were particularly drawn to a similar string of depressing subjects.

hink of all the random, impersonal photos you’ve taken on your cell phone during the past three months of subjects that just happen to catch your eye around the city—a massive pothole, a women in an eccentric outfit or a tree with one last remaining autumn leaf. Although amateur and spontaneous, with a bit of context, could these photos create a meaningful retrospective?

This is essentially the question behind 99 Days, the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center’s latest group exhibition, which features new work from six photographers, all created last year between Aug. 1 and Nov. 6. Regardless of what city they were shooting in or whether they were using a digital point-and-shoot, antique 8x10 view camera or their iPhone, each of the participating artists offered a small window into the current social landscape.

Not coincidentally, the selected threemonth time frame marked a pretty decisive period in American history, coinciding with the final, all-important stretch of the 2012 presidential election, so it’s only befitting that the first series of photos selected to greet viewers at the entrance are Andrew Fillmore’s behind-the-scenes stills from the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. Both chronologically and stylistically, his images seem to set the tone for the rest of the exhibit, focusing on a single individual interacting or engulfed in their surroundings. In fact, Fillmore allows the audience to see it from several different perspectives: the TV journalist getting his makeup touched up in between takes, the politician glued to his cellphone, the spectator watching the action from the nosebleed seats and the protestor outside demanding peace and housing for all. In doing so, he manages to highlight the anxiety, tension and confusion that most of us didn’t get to see on TV behind all the celebratory balloons and confetti.

Diverting your attention from the sea of affluent white men in patriotic suits and ties is Tyler School of Art alum Stefan Abrams— more specifically, his image of a disheveled, shirtless black man strolling down a plantlined Philly street, his jeans so low and his boxers so torn that his left buttock is completely exposed. Having probed the most dreadful nooks of Kensington, it appears, Abrams had a knack for zeroing in on captivating contradictions, whether it be a horse grazing in a vibrant field behind a row of gritty homes and a drug-recovery center or an abandoned property dubbed the “Crack Crib,” offering passersby words of inspiration: “Jesus Never Fails.”

SIX PACK Six More Worthwhile 2012 Theatrical Releases That Never Played Philadelphia

By Matt Prigge // mprigge@philadelphiaweekly.com A Burning Hot Summer: Roughly 700 films open in New York City annually. Philadelphia gets about a fourth of those. So, we miss some gems, although some—including four of these—briefly played festivals. In no way, shape or form did Philly get the latest from French minimalist legend Philippe Garrel (Regular Lovers). An uncharacteristically almost-accessible portrait of a young man (the director’s forever-floppy-haired son, Louis) and his eroding relationship with an older lover (Monica Bellucci), it, like the even better J’entends Plus La Guitare (1991), may or may not be loosely based on the elder Garrel’s on-againoff-again fling with Nico.

It’s Such a Beautiful Day: The best film of last year is actually three shorts by Don Hertzfeldt, the stick figure animator who refuses to use computers and whose work has been getting darker and more serious—but also greater—since his more overtly comic early works (Billy’s Balloon, Rejected). An Everyman is diagnosed with a fatal disease that eats away at his brain, and Hertzfeldt gets inside his decaying mind and expresses the wonders of existence with little more than line squiggles, 70-year-old special effects and spot-on observational writing.

Neighboring Sounds: Antonioni with a deadpan sense of humor and the occasional batshit sequence, the narrative feature debut of Kleber Mendonça Filho observes the uneasy evolution of a middle-class Brazilian city, where classism remains an issue.

Planet of Snail: The world according to a South Korean couple, one deaf and blind, the other pint-sized due to a spinal condition.

Tchoupitoulas: 2012 was a good year for documentaries that managed to worm themselves into the comfort zones of young subjects. Only the Young hangs with teens in a Southern California desert town, while filmmakers Bill and Turner Ross (45365) give us a tour of New Orleans nightlife through the eyes of African-American kids too young to patronize and enjoy many of the sights they come across. Like the film’s viewers, they can (mostly) only watch.

Whores’ Glory: Philly narrowly missed the latest from Michael Glawogger, who travels the world with a camera, filming its craziest sights. 2005’s Workingman’s Death zeroed in on five of the planet’s shittiest jobs. Whores’ Glory finds a sixth in Thailand, Bangladesh and Mexico, observing unblinkingly the tedium of the world’s oldest profession. n

A View to a Kill

Kathryn Bigelow’s masterful Zero Dark Thirty telescopes the manhunt for Osama bin Laden into a gripping procedural on the order of Zodiac or All the President’s Men.

By Sean Burns // sburns@philadelphiaweekly.com guess it’s better late than never that everybody in the press finally decided to have the outraged conversation about torture that should have happened 10 years ago—you know, back when we were torturing people.

A lot of the ink spilled on the subject of advanced interrogation techniques and their place in Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty has indeed been asinine, but the discussion also serves to underscore what’s so remarkable about this film and its presentation of recent events: There is no hand-holding here, no pat speeches summing up what the movie is trying to say. Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal don’t tell you how to feel about what happened; they simply present the facts, or at least as close as they’re able to approximate. The end result functions sort of like a viewer Rorschach test. Adults are expected to watch the film and draw their own conclusions, while politicians and polemicists are incapable of adult behavior—and often make lousy film critics anyway.

Based on eyewitness accounts given to journalist-turned-screenwriter Boal, the movie telescopes the decade-long manhunt for Osama bin Laden into a gripping procedural on the order of Zodiac or All the President’s Men. Zero Dark Thirty is first and foremost a phenomenal white-knuckle thriller, a precisiontooled two-hour-and-40-minute machine that left me breathless both times I saw it. Hell of a thing to be on the edge of your seat through an entire movie when everybody in the world already knows the ending.

Jessica Chastain stars as Maya, a rookie CIA agent described by Washington as “a killer.” She’s got no relationships or even any discernible interests outside of the job, and over the course of these 10 very long and confounding years, her obsession with tracking down and killing bin Laden becomes all-consuming.

Chastain was an off-kilter yet brilliant casting choice, her naturally willowy and ethereal demeanor hardening into steel as the investigation grinds on. After 30 years in Hollywood, Bigelow knows a thing or two about being a beautiful woman working in a man’s world, baby.

And offhand, institutionalized sexism is always lurking just beneath the surface, without anyone ever making a big deal about it.

That same matter-of-factness is employed across the board, and the approach gives Zero Dark Thirty such a gripping sense of verisimilitude. Those controversial interrogation sequences— which are limited to the film’s first halfhour, yet cast a sickening pall over everything that follows—are flattened out, devoid of sensationalism. Jason Clarke, the Australian actor who made no impression whatsoever co-starring with Chastain in last year’s Lawless, dominates Zero Dark Thirty’s early chapters, hulking over the detainees, calmly and quietly explaining that they’ll eventually break: “Everybody does. It’s biology, bro.”

Of course, had torture actually led to the location of Osama bin Laden, this movie would be at least 90 minutes shorter, and instead, we follow the increasingly single-minded Maya as she tirelessly digs around for a needle in a region full of haystacks. Administrations change, priorities are re-assigned, and Clarke’s detective strategies shift from waterboarding to bribery with Lamborghinis. Surveillance techniques evolve from analog to digital, climaxing in an improbably thrilling attempt to track a cell phone signal in a mobbed Pakistani marketplace.

Bigelow’s command of the medium is astonishing. Zero Dark Thirty’s scenes are short, pungent and convey exactly enough information to propel us into

the next. A bustling ensemble cast enters and exits at regular intervals, making brief but indelible impressions.

Special kudos to Jennifer Ehle, offering a stray beacon of human warmth, and James Gandolfini as amusingly beleaguered CIA chief Leon Panetta.

Capturing Seal Team Six’s raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abbotabad might be the trickiest maneuver of Bigelow’s career. We know exactly how this is going to play out, and yet it’s a wringer of a suspense sequence all the same. Filmed almost in real time— which is nerve-wrackingly slow for viewers weaned on action pictures— the operation unfolds without music, all deathly quiet and eerie green night vision, punctuated by sparse muzzle flashes and tactical professionalism. Bin Laden’s killing barely registers onscreen.

There’s nothing triumphant here when the dragon is slain, no “America, Fuck Yeah!” flag-waving to be found.

Instead, the final moments of Zero Dark Thirty—a wordless expression by Chastain that speaks volumes while saying nothing at all—have haunted me for weeks. Technically, we might have “won,” but you’ll leave the theater thinking about everything that’s been lost. ■

Slightly less convincing than Scott Baio and Jodie Foster’s child hooligans in the 1976 Bugsy Malone, Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer’s unintentionally hilarious Gangster Squad is so slick and glossy, I almost slipped on it. Caring not a whit for historical accuracy nor any semblance of period detail, half of Hollywood’s cool crowd has been laughably miscast to put on an anachronistic fashion show. The 1940’s jargon clangs with the contemporary performances, and every set looks like a soundstage that was built yesterday.

The Ellroy for Dummies plot concerns legendary racketeer Mickey Cohen, played here

by Sean Penn beneath so much hideous prosthetic makeup and grotesque physical contortions, he must’ve mistaken this for a Dick Tracy sequel. Josh Brolin wears exactly one sour facial expression as an uncorruptable cop, recruited by Nick Nolte’s wheezy police chief to head up a crew of vigilantes, leaving their badges at home to take out Cohen’s L.A. gambling operations by any means necessary.

It’s a rainbow coalition of stock characters, with Giovanni Ribisi as the nerd, Robert Patrick as the cowboy, Anthony Mackie as the black guy and Michael Pena as a Mexican actually named Navidad. (With a Native American in full headdress, they could pass as the Village People.) Ryan Gosling tackles the Doc Holliday role of a morally dubious, skirtchasing lush by amusing himself at no small expense of the ludicrous film he’s trapped in.

His omnipresent smirk betrays a contempt for the material rivaled only by my own.

Will Beall’s stutter-step screenplay (paying little attention to Paul Liberman’s nonfiction book) begins every other scene with either Brolin or Nolte walking into a room and loudly announcing what they all have to do to in order to move the plot forward. Organic storytelling this is not. Poor Emma Stone looks like a little kid playing dress-up as Mickey’s moll, seduced away by Gosling’s smooth talker. The two of them act out a Crazy Stupid Love prequel while Brolin and Penn are busy playing out Milk 2: The Rematch.

This is the worst performance Penn has ever given. And I saw Shanghai Surprise.

The original Texas Chain Saw Massacre [sic] is a flash-in-the-pan effort: a grimy nervefrayer that spends less time grinding up nubile flesh than it does shoving a camera into the bulging eye of its screaming Final Girl. Not even director Tobe Hooper tried to replicate its power; his weirdly brilliant 1986 sequel (penned by Paris, Texas co-scribe L.M. Kit Carson) swaps relentless intensity for relentless obnoxiousness. (It’s also one of the few narratives with no second act.) The 2003 Michael Bay-produced remake predictably faltered, as money is one thing you should never throw at the tale of a demented hick family whose patriarch is a hammer-wielding centenarian gargoyle.

The latest attempt to exhume the franchise fits it with a fancy extra dimension, allowing multiple iterations of Leatherface (Dan Yeager) sawing into the audience’s glasses. The more relevant modern alteration, though, has a trace of vaguely empathetic backstory. Segueing directly from a 3D condensation of the 1974 original, this new entry negates previous sequels by having the murderous Sawyer family wiped out by a Molotov-hurling redneck mob. A baby girl survives. Jump to the present day, when she should be 39, but is instead a 20-something hottie with a permanently exposed midriff (Alexanda Daddario). Made aware of her lineage, she journeys back to her ancestral home with idiot friends in tow, where the massacre’s other surprise survivor—the one who wears peoples’ faces as masks— awaits.

The first half is slasher boilerplate; the rest is slightly more interesting than it has to be.

The writers take a page from Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects, turning the monster into the righteous victim and the alleged lawmen—nominally trying to rid the world of evil—into the new baddies. It doesn’t have the time to go deeper on this idea, having burned most of its length on comely youths getting dismembered. Nor does it make much sense, evidently forgetting to at least drop in one significant villain postclimax. Briefly turning Leatherface emo is, too, a dodgy idea, even if he hadn’t been introduced piercing hedonists with hooks or tearing off a nice policeman’s face. But given the basement-level expectations of being a picture released on the year’s traditionally pallid first week, something is indeed something. (Matt Prigge)

@ THEATER OF LIVING ARTS Over 23 feature films, James Bond has proven himself to be a rake so suave at enticing the ladies, handling a firearm and lobbing a perfectly-timed comeback that he’s just a couple of skills shy of Greek godhood. But what if his life consisted of more than just alpha-male wish fulfillment? What if 007 offset all that jetsetting and gunplay with recouping drained 401(k) accounts, disposing of accidentally murdered prostitutes, undergoing breast-cancer treatments—all while surrounded by cogs-in-the-machine co-workers who largely lack his worldliness, panache and expensive tastes? Bond would come off as, well, kind of an asshole, which is exactly what makes Sterling Malory Archer such a killer riff on the super spy. The protagonist of Archer, FX’s high-grade animated comedy, is clearly cut from the cloth of Sean Connery-era Bond and resewn into an environment that illuminates the absurdity of his existence. On one level, Archer is a brilliant look at Bond ideals gone askew. On another, it’s a dysfunctional workplace comedy fleshed out by the lovable miscreants and sexual deviants working at ISIS (aka International Secret Intelligence Service), an agency secretly located beneath a dry-cleaning business.

Before the show’s fourth season debuts on Jan. 17, a solid cross-section of its cast are taking part in a four-date tour called Archer Live! Philly will play host to the flesh-andblood versions of Sterling (H. hen he first began recording songs as a young man in the ‘70s, Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi still lived in what was then known as Rhodesia. But shortly after the nation of Zimbabwe emerged as a presence on the international scene, Mtukudzi established himself as one of the country’s most distinctive and prolific musical voices.

Along with his deep, soulful vocals, talent for songwriting and acoustic guitar skills, Mtukudzi demonstrated a keen aptitude for collaborating with musicians across Zimbabwe to smoothly blend the traditional with the modern.

Now at 60, with dozens of studio albums and awards won—plus a handful of Zimbabwean movie soundtracks under his belt— Mtukudzi and his band, the Black Spirits, bring their unique sound to the Painted Bride Center this Saturday. There, they will perform their Afropop hits in Shona, Ndebele and English for a whole new generation of Tuku fans.

Over the years, your style has been affectionately termed “Tuku music,” by your fans, in honor of your last name.

Describe Tuku music.

For me, it is simply African music born out of Zimbabwe. What makes it distinctive is the different sounds of Zimbabwe—the mbira, mbaqanga, jit and the drumming style traditional to our people.

You’ve released albums every year since 1975. How do you keep your music fresh?

I keep my music original by coming up with new messages that one can use in one’s life.

For a song to be a song, it needs to have a message—my songs offer advice to my fans.

Instrumentation is just the flavor of the music. The message is what’s most important.

Tell us about your 57th album, Sarawoga, which means “left alone” in English and was released this past fall.

This is my first offering after the passing of my son, Sam, in March 2010. Some of the songs on Sarawoga were meant to be collaborations with him—he was also a musician. He played the acoustic guitar and saxophone. But after his passing, I was left to record on my own. Hence the name Sarawoga. It wasn’t originally the title, but it just didn’t feel like the full CD without the presence of Sam.

If you had to pick one of your songs to play to someone who had never heard your music, which would it be, and why?

Any song would qualify for anyone to sample because it is all Tuku music. If a song is my favorite, then I find a reason to record it.

So if it doesn’t convince me, the musician, how can I record it? Thus all of the songs I record are my favorites, and I’m glad to share them with the world.

You were one of the first musicians to publicly speak about the HIV/AIDS epidemics in Zimbabwe, and you continue to do so today. Who or what moved you to take on this issue?

The WHO [World Health Organization] approached me in 1987 to come up with an awareness song about HIV/AIDS. So I went out and got a lot of literature about HIV/ AIDS and wrote a song called “Stay With One Woman,” which took me to Switzerland.

It was there that I first saw people infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS. It was then that I started speaking publicly about it. I was also affected personally after I lost four members of my own band to AIDS, including my younger brother, Robert.

When you first started singing, your songs were clearly sympathetic to the revolutionary movement that founded Zimbabwe. Now, you say you “stand for all Zimbabweans” and will not get

involved in partisan politics through your music. Elaborate.

It’s not a decision; it’s the purpose of all art. Artists are here to give life hope and heal broken hearts. An artist is way above politics. Politics is when a handful of people stand for everyone. But artists represent everyone, including politicians. So an artist is always above politics.

Have you ever felt pressure to perform certain types of music specifically for Western audiences?

Well, I can’t call it pressure. But I do sometimes choose different types of my music that I believe Western audiences will enjoy— sometimes I choose more ballads and other times more dance music. Zimbabwe had our revolution in the late ‘60s. All we listened to before the revolution was American music and so I’m very familiar with earlier American musicians. But either way, I always play our music—Tuku music.

Was there anything I missed?

[Laughs.] Tell everyone it’s going to be a dance party Saturday night. If people come for this show, they should be prepared to bring their dance shoes. Don’t come prepared to sit down. This season, Dunham’s self-centered protagonist Hannah hooks up with a black Republican (much-needed guest star Donald Glover), scores cocaine from her recovering addict neighbor for a story and basically does a lot of shit she shouldn’t be doing. Moment of truth: What do you get when you cross Mad Men with Justified? Well, you get this punk-ass mashup of those acclaimed shows, yet another attempt from Cinemax to get into the original-programming game. True Blood creator Alan Ball is one of the executive producers of this inane, sadistic mess, which stars New Zealand heartthrob Antony Starr as a recently released ex-con who assumes the identity of a newly appointed small-town sheriff, who gets killed in a bar fight. There’s gruesome violence, gratuitous nudity and lots of shady shit going on—and, yet, I was not impressed.

1600 PENN Thursdays, 9:30pm, NBC Captive audience: People who like their political satire neither political nor satirical; Independence Day fans who want to see Bill Pullman play the president again.

Moment of truth: It’s a wacky, nutty White House in this screwball sitcom, which features a fictional First Family whose personal business is always briefing-room fodder. Bill Pullman plays—who else?—the president and the patriarch of this clan, which includes his high-strung second wife (Jenna Elfman) and his dim-witted screw-up of a son (show co-creator Josh Gad). Yeah, it’s cute, but it’s not as clever as it thinks it is. Also, doesn’t it seem like Gad, who starred in The Book of Mormon on Broadway, is basically ripping off his old bosses Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s short-lived sitcom, That’s My Bush?

Description: The chocolate peanut butter doughnut is pretty much flawless, its warm golden crisscross pattern luring you in to enjoy a perfectly balanced Reese’s-esque flavor bouquet. The cherry almond doughnut is gorgeously festive to look at, like a lollipop married a strudel and had a round, round baby; perhaps unsurprisingly, it tastes just like it sounds, the bright red frosting so sweet, it almost hurts. And the French toast doughnut is delicious, though it may be a naming misstep. Its cinnamon tang, combined with the crumb-sugar topping, makes it hard not to identify the experience as “lush, decadent coffee cake” rather than “toroidal French toast.”

Sat., Jan. 5, Center Theatre. artscc.org Overall vibe: The opening weekend of the fourth annual Independent Voices festival at Norristown’s Centre Theater was popping from the jump with the pulse-pumping exhilaration of New York City, once director Elvis Nolasco greeted the audience dressed in studio-neutral black, saying, “Armando Batista’s solo show City Boy is a work in progress. We welcome your feedback.”

Most memorable moment: Batista works his ass off, using only his body and text to construct two conflicting images of Washington Heights. One is El Alto, the Heights of his childhood, and the other the gentrified, yuppified, hipsterfied 181st Street of today, where he stands reduced to a tourist wearing a Times Square T-shirt. A backpack strapped to his back, Batista falls to the ground, crippled by the anxiety of isolation, with only his earliest memory of his father to lift him up.

Scene stealer: The text is tightly written, loaded with images so visceral you’ll be knocked out by the bird’s-eye view Batista offers of his concrete jungle: “Rent-controlled tenements, the battleground of the haves and the have-nots.” Although as captivating as Batista is, I couldn’t help but wish Centre Theater listened more closely to his text when he says “Love your hood; keep it local.” Open a Norristown-based festival with a solo performer who writes about Norristown, or at least the Philadelphia area, why can’t cha? Several questions: (1) What do gay people call such a union? (2) Does the gay community think it’s odd? Unremarkable? Sensible? (3) How does a union like that form? A couple adds a third? (4) Do these relationships last? Lots of pros and cons, just curious how it plays out.

2. Some gay people think throuples are odd, some think they’re unremarkable, and some think they’re sensible. And some gay people—some dumb ones— think gay throuples are bad PR at a time when gay couples are fighting for the right to marry. But our fight is for equal rights, not double standards, and no one argues that straight marriage should be banned because of all the straight throuples, quadles, quintles, sextetles, etc. out there.

3. In my experience, yes, that’s usually how it happens.

4. Throupledom presents unique challenges: Major life decisions require buy-in from three people; two can gang up against one during arguments; the partners who were coupled before the third came along may treat the third as a junior partner, not an equal partner, etc. But throupledom presents unique benefits, too: another set of hands to help around the house, another income to pay down the mortgage, another smiling face to sit on, etc. And it’s not like coupledom is a surefire recipe for success. Half of all marriages—those traditional “one man, one woman, for life” marriages— end in divorce. Yet discussions of throupledom all seem to begin with the assumption that coupledom is a self-evidently more stable arrangement. Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. I’d like to see some research comparing throuples to couples before I accept that premise.

I recently used the term “saddlebacking” to indicate the position where a man rubs his penis between his partner’s ass cheeks as either foreplay or nonintercourse sex. My girlfriend, a regular reader of your column, insists that I used the term incorrectly. Did I? This is a thing that really happens. Since anal sex isn’t “really” sex, according to the abstinence educators evangelical teens are exposed to, many good Christian teenagers rationalize that getting fucked in the ass doesn’t really count against a girl’s virginity.

The act to which you refer—rubbing your penis between someone’s ass cheeks as foreplay or as a substitute for intercourse—is known variously as frottage, outercourse, the Princeton Rub, or “the pearl tramp stamp.” But in Chicago, it’s known as “the Cardinal George.” ■
