As always, Mayor Nutter has just the phrase to describe what’s wrong with the world now. (Hint: It’s guns in schools.) f history doesn’t see fit to pass along Ed Rendell’s ‘90s-era nickname of “America’s mayor,” subsequently bestowed upon Rudy Giuliani, to Michael Nutter, it won’t be for lack of trying on Nutter’s part. The mayor took to MSNBC last week to discuss not just the Newtown school shooting but the subsequent press statement given by the NRA’s executive vice president, Wayne LaPierre, who proposed installing armed guards in all schools nationwide. And while speaking with MSNBC’s Luke Russert, the mayor produced his latest Nutterism—that is, his latest folksy-yet-slightly-awkward profane insult aimed at violent criminals and/or other people he thinks are making the world a worse place. This time, LaPierre was the target, as Nutter dubbed the NRA’s suggestion of weaponizing schools a “completely dumbass idea.”

It was a somewhat more colorful statement of opinion than Nutter’s previous words on the matter, issued Dec. 21 on behalf of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, of which he is the president: “NRA officials today blamed everyone but themselves for the conditions that permitted the monstrous attack on the children and teachers in Sandy Hook Elementary School. They said that gun laws don’t work and that pursuing legislation is a waste of time. They proposed instead the equivalent of an arms race.”

The official Conference of Mayors statement also called for new legislation to restrict specific guns and ammunition, strengthen background checks and increase the penalties for straw purchases of guns— all ideas which the mayor has supported for some time. During his MSNBC appearance, Nutter, who’s also a member of the group Mayors Against Illegal Guns, repeated those sentiments. “We need to ban assault weapons,” he said. “We need to ban the high-capacity clips and magazines. We need [a] serious background information system upgrade.”

He also noted that, according to the NRA’s logic, the two firefighters who were shot and killed Christmas Eve in Webster, N.Y., should have had armed guards with them. Because, if you give it a moment’s thought, the logical corollary to “Put armed guards in schools” is “Put armed guards anywhere anyone might ever get shot.” Which, of course, is everywhere.

In response to Tara Murtha’s exit interview with outgoing state legislator Babette Josephs: While it’s a shame to lose such a fierce progressive voice and one of the few women on the floor, Josephs’ tone-deafness on the transphobia of her “men with breasts” remark clearly illustrates her as being a bit behind the times—an ugly place for a progressive to be. She’ll be missed nonetheless, and I’m holding my opinion on her replacement until I see him in action... but perhaps it was just time for her to go.

Lay Off the Food Stamps

In response to Randy LoBasso’s week-long “food stamp challenge,” exploring the difficulty of bootstrapping out of poverty while only eating $5 worth of food a day: Welfare should be a temporary basis. It should only be helping you on a short time period until you try hard to get on your two feet without any more petty excuses. The children are the only victim here. As a grown adult, you should plan, save and be ready to take responsibility before you bring any child into this world. What happened to all the immigrants who came here before the welfare system started? The welfare system is good—it’s the people that broke the system and took advantage of it that prevent the resources to reach to the people who really need them.

gun-control measure in the city. So there’s pre-existing bad blood between them. That doesn’t mean the mayor’s wrong.

Nutter’s blunt statements—and his liberal deployment of four-letter words and their longer compound brethren—have become commonplace during interviews concerning subjects on which he’s passionate. During election season, the mayor was the only Obama supporter to openly call candidate Mitt Romney “a joke” on national television.

Back in January, he referred to two adults in

the city who shot kids from a car as “idiots and assholes.” After the Phillies won the World Series in 2008, he warned city fans not to be “jackasses.” In the wake of a rec center shooting in 2011, he referred to the gunman as a “complete asshole.” After a shooting this July 4th weekend, he called the shooter “a 16-year-old asshole.” And when the Kensington Strangler was caught, Nutter was reported to have said, “We got the motherfucker.” In each case, he was right on. When Sandy rolled in, at first our focus was on the water. From our bedroom window, we anxiously watched our little offshoot of Barnegat Bay rise, rise, rise, and we wondered if it would drown out the life we knew. The idea that the morning of Oct. 30 would not be a normal one was clear in the overnight skies: All night, as we saw the flood bury our street and climb the steps of our front porch to within inches of the house itself, transformers were popping in brilliant blue flashes. The sky would alight with them, wooosh, then gone, blue sheet lightning rising from the ground. They came from every direction— wooosh, wooosh, all night, until eventually they seemed a sort of heartbeat. If you imagined hard enough, you could envision them as the flashes of alien weaponry bombarding the neighborhood.

While this happened, cars died.

Turns out a submerged car goes through observable death throes; it dies in painful stages like a wounded wild animal. As the water rises over the dashboard, first the interior lights come on. Then the headlights.

If the trunk is electronic, it pops open. Then any electronic horns or security alerts start

to wail, slow and wet and mournful. That’s what happened as the floodwaters came in: First our family’s car died, the sudden glow of the inside lights signaling the beginning of the end. Then the one next to it, headlights erupting in a spasm of death as the water rose from tires to hubs to fenders to hood to dash to death. One after another, all the cars on our block did this. We timed the flood by them: headlights, horns, and that’s another neighbor with no means of transportation.

My wife’s car cried for an hour before it died, and up the street, an alarm blared on and off in five-minute spurts for two hours: BEEEEP. BEEEP. BEEEP. There was no sleeping.

In the morning, a horn started to wail next door. I looked out the window. The new neighbors’ SUV was dying. They had just moved in; we didn’t really know them. At first, Natalie and I joked about why theirs had taken so long when all the other cars on the block had succumbed overnight.

Then smoke started to pour from it. The electronics, just now frying in the water, had caught on fire. The vehicle was parked next to their garage—and underneath trees that touched our house. If it became fully engulfed in flames, both our homes would be in grave danger.

I jumped out into oil-covered water and

tried to find our garden hose in the debris and muck. Where was it? The water level was over my hips, even well after the peak of the storm, and it was murky. I couldn’t see anything through it.

The neighbor, Jeff, came out with a pot and started struggling with the fire. He splurged pots of floodwater onto it, but now the entire dash of the truck was in flames.

My hands felt urgently through the muck.

Finally I bumped into the hose, got it going and trudged over as fast as I could, spraying down the flaming vehicle. He smashed the windshield so we could get more water onto the flame-doused dash. We finally put it out.

Breathing heavily, soaked and cold and smelling like fuel oil, it struck me just then that the morning was beautiful. The sky was clear and blue—or seemed so after yesterday’s tempest. The world around me was surreal, eerily changed from the familiar landscape I knew, but it was a beautiful morning all the same. Jeff and I caught our breath and shook our heads at the absurdity of it all.

This is how I got to know my new neighbors.

Jeff and Kathy Nolan had moved in just weeks before Sandy struck. The house had been on the market for a while, the previous owner a weekend owner frustrated he

couldn’t get the nice payout he hoped for.

When the Nolans moved in, Natalie and I were glad they didn’t seem like 20-somethings eager to party every summer weekend—we already have plenty of Jersey Shore types in our neighborhood, thanks. The few crossdriveway conversations we had were pleasant. Seemed like good people.

And then, there we were, putting out a fire raging in his car.

What followed was a week of tremendous hospitality—of getting to know our neighbors and, more importantly, getting to know how amazingly generous they were. Jeff and Kathy had a gas oven. We did not. Their water was heated by gas. Ours was not. So the first night after the storm, they invited us over to take a shower and share the food we all had, lest it spoil. We bathed, felt human, and broke bread together, commiserating in the unreality around us.

We did that every night for a week. At 8 a.m., Kathy would knock on our door with a kettle of scalding hot water so we could make tea. That warm liquid was the morning boost I needed to get up and tackle the cleanup work that so desperately needed doing. All week long, we met at the Nolans’ and had dinner by candlelight, pooling the food from three households, enjoying what seemed like feasts at the time, wondering if maybe

this was how people lived 200 years ago. We talked about ourselves, our families, our outlooks. It was nice.

It’s amazing how you get to know one another when the world seems to have fallen apart.

The same, I found out later, was happening elsewhere. When I spoke to Joanne LaCicero of the neighboring island town of Lavallette, just across the bay, her story made mine seem quaint. My family and I were sharing our tiny two-bedroom space with my mother-inlaw—whose house was destroyed by the storm—and coming together with the couple next door for only a few hours each evening.

Joanne and her family, on the other hand, were sheltering more than a dozen neighbors in their home.

“We lived with them for 10 days,” she told me. “It’s amazing how we came together. Everyone had a job. You go into survival mode.”

True. A week after Sandy, we had a mandatory evacuation thanks to a cross-looking nor’easter rolling in. So, not wanting to watch another flood taunt our home, and unsure of how strictly the evacuation would be enforced—for nearly a week after Sandy, my neighborhood was locked down by checkyour-ID cops every evening to prevent looting, which tickled all sorts of Orwell buttons in me—we fled to a friend’s safer homestead, where my family ended up sleeping on his family’s floor for a few nights. We weren’t really the sleepover types—it’s just what you did during this time.

All of us. Because what Sandy did was, she blew us together.

Through the holiday season, Kevin Geoghegan seemed to be thinking less about the usual sorts of Christmas presents and more about the fact that the gift he needs is an ambulance. He’s the vice president of the Silverton EMS, which serves the Silverton area of Toms River, a bayside community immediately south of mine, with plenty of waterfront property looking out toward the barrier island that separates the Atlantic from Barnegat Bay. The volunteer emergency squad has been a part of the community since 1964, and Geoghegans have been a part of it from the start. Right now, though, Kevin Geoghegan isn’t looking toward the past—he’s looking ahead.

Silverton flooded extensively during the storm: The banks of Kettle Creek and Tide Creek and Barnegat Bay swelled over, trashing cars and rendering homes unlivable. When my brother, Michael, drove through the community the day after the storm to check on the homes of friends and family, he couldn’t get down most of the roads. Too many trees down. Too much flooding. Too many people wandering around in a daze, trying to make sense of what had happened.

One of the Silverton EMS’s two ambulances fell casualty to Sandy’s waters. The squad is still responding to calls, Geoghegan told me in December, but at times, the larger township’s paid municipal squad has to step in to help

All week long, we met at the Nolans’ and had dinner by candlelight, pooling the food from three households, enjoying what seemed like feasts, wondering if maybe this was how people lived 200 years ago. them—not just because they’ve lost a rig, but because a large number of their volunteers were displaced when Sandy destroyed their homes, and are simply unavailable while they’re temporarily living elsewhere. “We’re doing the best we can,” he said. Post-storm progress, though, is slow.

We’re all dealing with that same frustration on some level. My family and I have struggled to replace lost automobiles; as I write this, I’m still driving a borrowed car. My mother-inlaw, jerked back and forth between insurance companies and FEMA with no clear answer as to what will happen with what’s left of her house, remains in limbo. Geoghegan and his

emergency team are experiencing the same.

“We’re waiting on the insurance company to make a decision,” he said. “It’s not like this is going to be resolved quickly, especially in light of the situation everyone is in.”

And just like so many New Jersey and New York families have taken others into their home, so, too, has the Silverton EMS. Right now, they’re sharing space in their Silverton headquarters with the National Guard, who themselves have been trying to find functional space to operate from as they assist with the recovery and rebuilding effort.

When I spoke to him about four weeks after the storm, Geoghegan was lobbying Toms

River officials to reassign an ambulance from another squad to Silverton until a permanent replacement can be secured. The volunteer squads don’t actually own their ambulances— they’re township property—so officials have the power to shift around ambulances if they so choose.

The town fathers are swamped with poststorm problems, though—the largest of which is getting people back into their homes on the barrier island. It’s a process that looks like it won’t be finished until the spring at the earliest.

(Note: On Dec. 21, Silverton and some other nearby coastal areas flooded again. I have not yet been able to get back in touch with Geoghegan to see how his squad fared.)

The days immediately following Sandy taught Joanne LaCicero a lot. They taught her to appreciate what she and her family have.

They taught her that most people are inherently good. They reminded her how much she loves her community. Speaking with her for an afternoon, even I couldn’t help but feel strangely good about the aftermath of the storm, and I’m a relentless cynic at heart.

LaCicero and her husband, Walter, have lived in Lavallette since 1994, and they love the island town. So much, in fact, that Walter ran for mayor and won. He is an attorney; she is his office manager. Their view is a smalltown view: They know almost everyone in town, solicit most of the businesses there, and if chatting with her is any indication, it’s safe to say that the family bleeds Lavallette.

About five weeks after the storm, the island was still a mess. Dead cars, piles of debris, broken homes. The school in Lavallette came away unscathed, but because opening to students would entail parents bringing their kids onto an island still offering only limited access to residents, the school remained closed. Joanne also suspected that many parents simply haven’t wanted their children to see the wreckage littering the island. It can be disheartening.

And yet: Just a month after the storm, three Lavallette businesses were back up and running—including a gas station. That, she told me, was huge. Even bigger was the possibility of home gas service returning to this section of the island.

“I see us being up and running by summer,” she says. “I have a newfound respect for the workers of this town. I saw a lot of our DPW [Department of Public Works] guys out in waders, in chest-deep water, trying to do stuff during the storm.” She doesn’t know why they stayed, she told me; she just knows that they did. They could have left—and technically should have, as the island had a mandatory evacuation—but instead, they worked ceaselessly to protect the place where they lived.

That, LaCicero thinks, is part of why her town is ahead of the curve in the rebuilding process. “I look at our community as a beacon of hope,” she said. “The townspeople who stayed—the day after, they all came together

In contrast, many at the Jersey shore are talking about leaving. One couple I know who live on the island, right on the bay, plan to fix their house and then get out. The sentiment is widespread. LaCicero, though, says there’s no chance of that happening with her family.

“I wouldn’t leave. There was devastation here, but there can be devastation wherever you go.” They get tornados in the Midwest, she reminded me—hurricanes down South, floods and mudslides and raging forest fires elsewhere. Natural disasters happen. You can’t run from it.

Weeks after Sandy passed, it has continued to rain inside my mother-in-law’s house.

Not because most of the roof was ripped off in the storm; that gaping wound has a temporary bandage, affixed at the behest of the insurance company. See, when blow No. 2 showed up on the horizon—the nor’easter dubbed “Athena” that dumped up to a foot of snow on a region already ravaged by Sandy— the insurance company told my mother-inlaw she had to cover the huge tear in her home. Never mind that the entire home was one big tear bleeding to death: They wanted that hole covered!

So we covered it. Some roofers who had been working in the neighborhood rigged up tarping in the hours just prior to the nor’easter, and they did a damn good job, considering. The tarp held all the snow dumped

Turns out a submerged car goes through observable death throes; it dies in painful stages like a wounded wild animal. onto it, though it sagged like an ancient belly for weeks afterward. The problem is, the rest of the roof was not covered with a tarp. The roof is just open plywood and insulation underneath—everything else, as I’ve already told, having been ripped off by Sandy and tossed into the waterway.

Hence the rain.

You see, the insulation in her roof absorbed so much water in the hurricane that it became as saturated as a dish sponge after dinner.

Now, with only very little evaporating, a fine

mist is ceaselessly emanating from the ceiling.

It’s like morning fog rising from a swamp, only the swamp is flipped upside down. If you’re in the house—and we rarely are now, because it stinks like rot and oil and mold and the sea— you can occasionally hear the house dying.

The sound is slow but steady. At random, one of the few remaining chunks of ceiling falls, a dead thunk from an adjacent room telling you that another part of the house has died.

She was going to leave the house to my son.

She still will, of course, if she doesn’t do what many are doing and sell the property before another Sandy makes landfall. And she just may do that, too, because the fact is, it’s not unreasonable for shore residents to find the prospect of staying scary. Before now, we’ve never had to face what they’re accustomed to down on the Gulf Coast—the idea that an insurmountable force can abruptly materialize on your doorstep, the fact that you can get wiped out in a moment. Why stay? That idea is starting to take hold in our consciousness.

But even if she does stay, it won’t be the home my son was born in, and his mother was born in, and his grandmother raised a family in, because that was a family home. A home that had been lived in by several generations.

And it will have been replaced. It will just be some pale imposter standing vigil over the waters where my son’s family once lived.

This is, I think, Sandy’s lasting gift. The idea that a tenscore of memories can be washed away in a surge of salt water and wind and debris. his way through songs like “Dead Silence,” Oliveri and his bandmates let it all hang out. The wailing guitars and megaton-heavy bass lines on “Simple Exploding Man” will have you banging your head and pumping your fists in no time, but Oliveri & Co. also surprise with death acoustic ditties like “Open Up and Bleed for Me” and the instrumental “Demolition Day.” Whether singing about destruction or despair, or whether using acoustic or rock ‘n roll music to drive their messages home, Mondo Generator certainly make an impression.

The Wilma Theater starts 2013 with guest director David Kennedy’s staging of the workplace comedy Assistance. The second installment in playwright Leslye Headland’s “Seven Deadly Sins” series, Assistance is set in the Manhattan headquarters of a corporation led by a tycoon so tyrannical, he makes Donald Trump look reasonable. Instead of focusing on the boss (who remains an unseen but no less domineering force), Headland’s offBroadway hit focuses on the young employees Nick and Nora. In normal circumstances, the young underlings might cultivate dreams of climbing the corporate ladder, but in their current hellish job, the goal is to simply survive the day with their

Tonight’s a night of local success stories who both nail their respective aesthetics. Sun Airway’s Jon Barthmus has quickly become a Philadelphia hero in our expanding indie scene. Two years ago, the debut of Nocturne of Exploded Crystal Chandelier on Dead Oceans put Barthmus and his brand of grandiose bedroom pop on the map, earning praise from far and wide (including a 7.8 out of 10 from Pitchfork). It’s a killer record, and his followup, Soft Fall, mere months old, is still circulating around in Philly headphones. It’s a beautifullyorchestrated collection of richly-conceived dreamlike pop confections that are laced with influences of pre-electronica (ELO/New Order), as well as modern future folk like Animal Collective and M83.

Sun Airway’s fast becoming a name that’s rattled off alongside The War on Drugs, Pissed Jeans, Spacin’ and Swearin’ as up-and-coming big names in Philly. And opening for them is Cruiser, another

Starting in the late 1960s, a number of AfricanAmerican students swelled the ranks of UCLA’s film program. Dubbed L.A. Rebellion, the movement borrowed from the Italian Neorealists and other such groups, choosing to portray black communities without the need to kowtow to mass white audiences. Of these filmmakers, the best-known is Larry Clark (Kids), but the best is likely Charles Burnett, whose terminal underemployment has still resulted in the odd masterpiece. After 1977’s Killer of Sheep, a gutter poetic look at a low-income Watts family, Burnett again had trouble with 1983’s My Brother’s Wedding, a shaggy but piercing look at an unemployed 30-something who rages against his sibling marrying into a higher class. A mixed review of the rough cut in The New York Times led to it being unable to score a distributor, and Burnett was only able to finish editing in 2006. International House will devote every Saturday in January to L.A. Rebellion films, with this Saturday also including Julie Dash’s legendary Daughters of the Dust and Jamaa Fanaka’s Emma Mae. he Philadelphia dining scene is as vibrant and as varied as it’s ever been in my lifetime. In fact, I don’t recall restaurants ever having been as viscerally rewarding as they are right now, and not just in Philadelphia: Everywhere I travel, it seems, there’s an increasing sense of attention being paid to both the local food traditions as well as the global influences that, with the rise of social media and the ease of travel, are adding ever more texture to what people all over the world eat.

Here at home, our best chefs and restaurateurs are keeping an increasingly close and attentive eye on what’s happening inside and out of the 2-1-5. From fine dining to more casual spots, Philly restaurants have entered what might be called a global culinary jet stream, inside of which trends from all over the world—and very much including our own proverbial backyard—are being internalized and reinterpreted in ways both original and smart.

With that in mind, I reached out to a number of Philadelphia’s top talents to ask them to read the tea leaves and offer some insight into what sort of eating and drinking trends we should look for in this newly-minted 2013.

Kevin Sbraga thinks that we will see “more Nordic cooking influence on high-end restaurants.” This makes sense: While the foods of Northern Europe haven’t traditionally had much of a following on this side of the Atlantic, the rise of the great restaurant Noma in Copenhagen—named the best restaurant in the world for the past three years in a row—has made this cuisine ripe for its star turn here. He also expects to see a “continued growth in Filipino cuisine” and more of a focus on roasted meats, game birds and hand-made pastas.

Food trends, like so much else in our national life, are beholden to external factors, the economic climate perhaps chief among them. Patrice Rames, of Bistro St. Tropez, suggests, “Because of the economy, rustic food will be the trend. Satisfying, not too complicated— back to old traditions. Dishes like Swiss chard gratin, braised kale, sautéed beet greens, calves liver, braised lamb shank.”

In other words: foods that are cost-effective for the restaurant and high-impact

and comforting for the guest.

In terms of how we’ll likely be drinking in the new year, an ever greater focus on both the components and underpinning philosophy of cocktails will continue to grow. Lêe, of Hop Sing Laundromat, hopes to see more emphasis placed on the quality of ingredients: “Just like you can’t open a steakhouse then serve the cheapest cut of meat, I’d like to see cocktail bars start serving better [spirits].” He hopes mixologists in 2013 will back off the practice of using two or three different kinds of bitters in one drink—an approach he calls “cocktails’ MSG.” Vincent Stipo, beverage manager and bartender at Vernick Food & Drink, is excited about the potential for how age can affect a cocktail. He notes that “experimenting with aged cocktails has been going on for a few years, but as the pioneers perfect the process, we will find this trend start to trickle down. A cocktail is thought of as being done in the moment, served fast and fresh. It is great to appreciate flavors that have developed over time like we do at Vernick with cured meats and cellared wines.”

Stipo notes that he’s starting to develop infrastructure for vertical tastings: essentially, the same drink offering at a variety of vintages.

Many of the professionals I consulted say they expect some sort of increased intimacy in, or connection to, the dining experience—the restaurant, perhaps, as a salve for these intractably troubled times. Daniel Stern, of R2L, believes that “we will continue to see the growth of the independent small(er) places in Philly that are driven by the creativity of the chefs and owners. More personal places.” Eli Kulp, executive chef at Old

City’s Fork, predicts that “family-style eating will continue to become more popular in high-end restaurants, because guests feel a real connection to each other as they share the food on the table.” He also thinks that “more chefs will hone in on regional traditions and styles, focusing on food that ‘connects’ the diner to the experience.”

He’s not alone in those expectations: The sense of comfort that a great restaurant can engender is a facet of the dining experience that’s becoming a prime focus all over the city. Michael Santoro, chef and co-owner of The Mildred, notes that “higher guest interaction” is a key to success. “Personally, we speak to several guests a week either on the phone, in the kitchen, or on the floor ... Every time I hang up the phone with a guest, they feel reassured in the pride that we are showing them. In the end,” he adds, “the trend we are seeing, and hopefully contributing to, is higher satisfaction by re-evaluating the meaning of hospitality.” His partner at the restaurant, general manager and co-owner Michael Dorris, notes: “When you serve a product like food and wine, that creates emotion, [and] you have to be very careful. It’s always important to think about the guest. The guest is coming to your establishment to spend time with someone else or a group of people. During that time, they have expectations. The restaurant has to meet those expectations ... Trust, now more than ever, is an important trend.”

And when a restaurant or bar earns that trust, their guests are more likely to remain open to the journey that a great, inspired meal or drinking experience will take them on. n

food from local sources. The Mildred Salad makes for a refreshing start with salted almond, lemon confit and fresh herbs. The hand-spun chitarra with braised cockles, bacon and beer did not disappoint. The pasta is fresh and cooked al dente, while the cockles are tender; the dish satisfies the craving for salt and butter without being heavy or oily. The standout of the meal is the braised chicken and biscuits with herbs and vegetables. Healthy chunks of onion, squash, carrot and celery season the chicken, served hot in a skillet. Don’t skip dessert: Meyer lemon tart with fresh huckleberries, huckleberry sauce and thyme creme glace is fresh and not overly sweet. (Cristina Perachio)

This is the latest entry into our city’s ever-sprouting crop of smoke- and firecooked meateries, a Lone Star bar with ample TVs, straightforward decor and one serious smoker. Pit master Robert “Bubba” Kolbasowski is a stickler for details, and his 21-spice dry rub and homemade BBQ sauce are remarkable testaments to his focus on every aspect of what gets sent out of his kitchen. Brisket is the ne plus ultra here. It remains untrimmed until after it’s completed its 24- to 30-hour vacation in the smoker, allowing the fat atop it to slowly melt into the meat itself. The wings are beguilingly smoke-perfumed, impossibly moist, and tossed in a choice of three sauces (mild, hot or BBQ) that each would be a highlight anywhere in the city. And despite a full belly, the TastyKake Krimpetbread pudding, with its homemade butterscotch, won’t last until morning. This is clearly an excellent new addition to the city’s growing reputation as a sort of barbecue meatopia.

VEDGE

Vedge, which resides in the stunning space once occupied by Deux Cheminées, does more to bridge the chasm between the artificially distant worlds of the omnivore and the vegan than any restaurant I’ve ever visited. Grilled gochujang tofu boasts three (three!) separate rounds of marinating and arrives in a shallow pool of smoked miso dashi, crowned by a translucent lace of yuba “cracklin,” and accompanied by an edamame puree: soy beans four ways, each of them remarkable. Roasted golden beats are layered on pumpernickel with smoked tofu, avocado, capers and a cucumber dill sauce to perfectly embody the satisfying richness of a smoked salmon sandwich. (B.F.)

El Loco Pez seems to be a nice middle ground where all people can feel comfortable. It’s a bar with a sense of inclusion, humor ... and damn good tacos and drinks.

Carne asada was the most familiar, the short ribs tender and deeply seasoned with cumin, as well as Worcestershire and soy. Taco al pastor is nearly halfway between dinner and dessert, the distinct whiff of cinnamon and clove in the tender chunks of pork combine with the pineapple in ways that are distinctly reminiscent of an old-school pineapple upside-down cake. Order two of these. The menu encourages overconsumption. On the drink tip: The margarita at El Loco Pez is a balanced gem, neither teeth-suckingly tart nor cavity-causing sweet. For something more adventurous, check out the Monte Carlo, whose sweetly perfumed hibiscus water is balanced out by an in-house infusion of tequila and chipotle. Simple food prepared with confidence and care, and served in an atmosphere that’s welcoming and un-selfconsciously cool. (B.F.)

Center City’s newest Pan-Asian joint is raising the bar for this part of town. While the dishes are mostly familiar, they’re somehow more memorable, like the beef rendang: rich cubes of beef soaked for hours in coconut milk and finally caramelized to perfection. Or the popcorn rock shrimp; don’t let the small size fool you, these little undersea invertebrates boast a big flavor, with the most well fried carapace I’ve had in a while. The serious

consideration of each flavor is very clearly evident in Chef Michael Chan’s work. (B.F.)

This much-anticipated East Passyunk restaurant joins the top echelon of BYOBs in Philly. Roasted hen-of-the-woods mushroom sees its inherently earthy character distilled and highlighted through careful searing and additions of orange zest, garlic, thyme and shallots, as well as less expected hits of a spice blend of rose hips, sesame and sumac.

As if that weren’t enough, the mushroom is accompanied by smoked ricotta, a Madeira puree, greens and black radish. The pork belly appetizer could be the swine version of Ecstacy. Like some kind of savory, thickbacon candy bar, the belly was joined by a winter bean cassoulet that was actually a brilliant play on the classic stew. White miso cavatelli—toothy, dense and delicious—was paired with silky butternut squash that found its flavor opposite in the perfectly calibrated black garlic painted across the plate and lying in wait beneath the pasta. Service is confident and well-choreographed, and the pacing of the meal is just right, from bread service to dessert. (B.F.)

Local Theater’s Goal for 2013: Defying Gravity

Many companies are creating more economically feasible production models this year.

Cooper Robb // jrobb@philadelphiaweekly.com t’s impossible to say precisely what will happen in Philadelphia theater in 2013; after all, one of the art form’s greatest virtues is its unpredictability. No matter how many times a production has been performed, whenever actors ply their trade in front of an audience, there’s the chance that something unexpected will occur. That said, the big surprise in 2012 was the absence of big surprise.

Despite a wretched economy, nearly all of the city’s companies have survived—thanks, in large part, to the support of Philadelphia theatergoers who continue to pack area venues.

Still, there are a disturbing number of small companies teetering on the brink of financial collapse due to a decrease in funding from foundations, and many are busy formulating more economically feasible models of theater production to put in place this year.

Several producing and artistic directors in the theater community say the dominant trend for 2013 will be an increase in collaboration between companies on both the local and national level—which isn’t an entirely new development. In the past few years, we’ve already seen an increase in collaborative projects, with one example being the Walnut Street Theatre’s recent production of the musical Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, which it staged in conjunction with North Carolina Theatre. (The production was directed

by NCT’s artistic director Casey Hushion and opened in North Carolina before transferring intact to Philadelphia.) This January, InterAct Theatre Company will co-produce local playwright David Robson’s Assassins with the Ambler, Pa.-based Act II Playhouse, and later this year, Azuka Theatre will produce new work with the Kimmel Center to be performed on the Kimmel’s roof in the recently completed Hamilton Gardens.

The advantages to co-producing a show with another company are numerous. In addition to sharing production costs, in many cases, the actors are guaranteed an extended period of employment, which allows them additional time to develop their characters.

If the co-production is a new play—as in the case of Robson’s Assassins—it guarantees that the playwright’s work will live beyond the first production. As a member of the National New Play Network, InterAct has staged a number of “rolling world premieres” in which several companies commit to producing a new play and sharing the world-premiere designation.

(According to InterAct artistic director Seth Rozin, the goal of NNPN is to guarantee a new play more than one production.) Other potential benefits of cross-company collaboration include the cross-pollination of ideas and giving audiences the opportunity to experience the work of artists to whom they otherwise may not be exposed.

James Haskins, the Wilma Theater’s managing director, and artistic director Blanka Zizka recently met with the leaders of five major regional theaters—Hartford Stage, McCarter Theatre, Syracuse Stage, Wooly Mammoth and Writers Theater—to “discuss new models of sharing each other’s work.” The advantages of combining forces, he says, include longer contracts for actors, raising the profile of regional theater across the country and “breaking the assembly-line model of producing theater that has become the norm for most of us.” He emphasized that the Wilma’s discus-

sions with other acclaimed regional theaters are in the early stages and wouldn’t be implemented until 2014, at the earliest. Meanwhile, for the upcoming year, Haskins and others expressed interest in gauging what—if any— impact last year’s demise of the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia would have on the region’s theater community. We already know that the Barrymore Awards have been abandoned for the 2012-13 season, but beyond that, the general consensus is that Theatre Alliance’s absence will not affect the dayto-day operations of local companies.

One program that certainly won’t be impacted is the Kimmel Center’s Broadway Series. Perhaps its most popular and profitable program, the 2013 lineup of shows begins with a visit from Broadway and box-office smash Les Miserables (Jan. 2-13) and later in the season includes a lengthy summer run for Wicked (June 26-Aug. 4) that will undoubt-

edly make the musical favorite 2013’s biggest box-office hit in Philadelphia.

Despite the popularity of Les Miz, Wicked and other touring productions, the heart of Philadelphia theater remains the city’s nonprofit companies, even with the challenges that lie ahead. Azuka’s producing artistic director Kevin Glaccum pointed to the new performance spaces in the city as a sign of the community’s continued growth. Gregory Scott Campbell, producing artistic director at Luna Theater, which just opened a space of its own, is “very optimistic about the future of theater in Philadelphia,” he says, and Sara Garonzik, producing director at Philadelphia Theatre Company, maintains she “only see[s] us getting stronger in the coming year.” Lantern Theater’s artistic director Charles McMahon embodies that optimism most simply: “The only thing really wrong with Philadelphia Theater right now is that there is too much great work to see.” ■

An Auspicious Start for Local Art The new year just got underway, and local museums and galleries already have can’t-miss shows in the works and on the walls.

Start the year off right by promising to visit five shows that give great artists their due.

Generations: Louise Fishman, Gertrude Fisher-Fishman and Razel Kapustin It’s a family thing. Generations contextualizes renowned abstract painter Louise Fishman’s oeuvre in the branches of a creative family tree. Primed for and preceded in painting by her mother, Gertrude Fisher-Fishman, and her aunt, Razel Kapustin, Fishman junior’s legendary body of work is revealed here in a new and intimate light. While Fishman is internationally recognized for her feminist brand of abstract expressionism, her female forebears had quieter, local careers in Philadelphia. Fishman will give an artist talk on Jan. 6.

Tacita Dean: JG British-born, Berlin-based artist Tacita Dean is known for her poetic, elliptical films, the newest of which will premiere at Arcadia University this February. Great and Mighty Things: Outsider Art from the Jill and Sheldon Bonovitz Collection It’s always satisfying to see a distinguished survey museum bow before the untrained talent of artists who tend not to fall within the art-historical canon. This groundbreaking exhibition showcasing art from the promised gift of Jill and Sheldon Bonovitz is sure to delight, with homemade constructions engineered from chicken bones, dirt, soot, roofing tin and a host of other humble materials.

Further than simply highlighting the strange objects and remarkable talent that can arise outside of art schools, the exhibition also promises to tackle an important question: How does the category “outsider artist” need to be adjusted, updated or reconfigured in an art world that has relied heavily on vernacular materials and pop-cultural forms since the post-war era?

215.763.8100. philamuseum.org Karla Black Whether it’s a pointed seasonal pairing or just happy serendipity, it seems only fitting that Glasgow-based artist Karla Black’s solo show at ICA will open in the spring. Her palette is vernal, and her constructions are delicate. Rumpled cellophane floats down from the ceiling, plaster confections languish like leftover layer cakes, and pink powder sprays across the floor. Black’s rumpled pastels aren’t treacly but rather dewy (and sometimes gooey; her work often features smeared or dripped cosmetics and toiletries). For her first major museum presentation in the United States, Black will create two site-specific sculptures on the ICA’s second floor.

Lenore Tawney: Wholly Unlooked For In Philadelphia, we get our fiber. There’s the Fabric Workshop and Museum, the Art Alliance’s crafts-focused mission and Fiber Philadelphia, the international biennial of fiber art. Just last year, the ICA presented a stunning retrospective of fiber artist Sheila Hicks, and now, the University of the Arts (in partnership with the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Lenore Tawney Foundation) offers their rejoinder. Lenore Tawney will be the first exhibition of the pioneering fiber artist’s since her death, at the age of 100, in 2007. Tawney is credited with pushing artistic weaving from pictorial tapestries toward more sculptural elements known as “fiberworks.”

(1960) in conversation with Richard Smithson’s earthwork and film, Spiral Jetty (1970); apparently, it’s a conversation about the salt flats of Utah and southern California. The project’s many layers is typical of Dean’s work, although it has been billed as a “radical departure.” Happily, Philadelphians may decide for themselves by comparing JG with a selection of Dean’s other work and influences on view at International House and the Fabric Workshop and Museum.

Surely Hollywood’s best and brightest have a few New Year’s resolutions for 2013. No? Well, we penned some on their behalf—and ours.

Alps: Roughly 700 films open in New York City annually.

Philadelphia gets about a fourth of those. So, we miss some gems. Among those this year was Greek filmmaker Giorgos Lanthimos’ follow-up to his fiendishly clever Dogtooth (itself among 2009’s unreleased-in-Philly). Though featuring another high concept—a service that provides families a surrogate to act as a recently deceased loved one—the tone is more funereal, the gags more stickin-your-throat, the overall product more like Attenberg, another Greek production (co-starring Lanthimos) that at least played last year’s Philadelphia Film Festival.

New Year’s brings with it an arbitrary impetus for self-improvement. The pub crowds thin out a bit, and the gym gets awfully crowded for a couple of weeks. Sure enough, I’ll probably be reciting the same tired litany of resolutions that I break before long every year—that old song and dance about eating healthy, reading classic literature, ignoring my ex and not getting shitfaced on weeknights.

(For some reason, I also always resolve to learn more about wine and jazz because those seem like “adult” interests.)

Lord knows Hollywood could stand a bit of self-improvement, too, so here’s a handy list of New Year’s resolution suggestions for the filmmaking set. But unfortunately, even in the best-case scenarios, they’ll probably be broken before Groundhog Day. Just like ours.

Beyond the Black Rainbow: Retro ‘80s is once again a thing, this time among art nerds. But where Drive pays debt to the cinema of Michael Mann, the debut of Panos Cosmatos (son of George Pan Cosmatos of Rambo: First Blood Part II) tips its hat to a silky, hypnotic subphylum of sci-fi that never seems to have existed, except in its filmmaker’s mind. The genre specialists at Magnet picked it up and mostly dumped it on video; one needs the big screen to swim in its loud colors and not flee during its many trippy longeurs.

• Ben Affleck will further sharpen his already impressive directorial chops by casting lead actors who are not Ben Affleck.

• Quentin Tarantino will get over “the N-word.” He’ll also stop giving interviews that make me retroactively hate his movies. >> Beyond the Black Rainbow

The Day He Arrives: South Korean minimalist Hong Sangsoo had a record three movies distributed in America this year (this, Oki’s Movie and In Another Country). None of them played Philly outside festival gigs. The best finds a filmmaker living the same general story thrice, with minor deviations.

Generation P: This Russian bugfuck was pulled from a local release at the last second, which is a shame as it’s legitimately nuts. A clerk is chosen to be an ad whiz after the fall of communism, which is only the first five minutes.

Later, he will channel Che Guevara for slogan advice via Ouija board and meet an Egyptian dog god named Phukkup.

Goodbye First Love: Olivier Assayas’ young girlfriend, the talented Mia Hansen-Løve, made this devastating look at the decay of a relationship, with its young actors playing both their teenage selves and their 10-years-later counterparts—a symbol of lovers staying true to each other, even after a decade apart.

The Turin Horse: The threatened swan song for Béla Tarr, one of cinema’s great maximalist miserablists, and it couldn’t even score a token week-long run. n

• Politicians and pundits will actually take the time to go see the films they’re claiming to be outraged about instead of just firing off uninformed op-ed pieces and bizarre talking points willy-nilly.

• Producer Megan Ellison will keep writing massive checks for movies like The Master, Killing Them Softly and Zero Dark Thirty because without her squandering her inheritance, cinema is far less interesting.

• Steven Soderbergh will change his mind about that whole pledge to retire from filmmaking after his next movie.

• Kevin Smith will not change his mind about that whole promise to retire from filmmaking after his next movie.

• All pictures in which Channing Tatum dies will follow G.I. Joe’s example and undergo costly delays and reshoots to make sure such a horrible thing never happens again.

• Brad Pitt will admit that his Chanel ad campaign was an elaborate prank by Tyler Durden.

• And, though this train has probably already left the station, I do wish the major Hollywood studios would reconsider their own resolution to stop shipping 35mm prints to cinemas at the end of 2013. We can squabble all day about the pitfalls of digital projection, a buggy, still-developing technology with often noticeably inferior picture quality.

But the more pressing issue here is the crippling overhead required for the conversion.

It costs roughly $60,000 per screen for a digital upgrade—mere peanuts for the major exhibition chains, but financially ruinous for independent operations. Looking to 2018, the old-school patronage system will be back in full swing, with nonmusic-based businesses footing the bill for most young and notable musicians’ studio budgets.

• Also on the reunion trail: dance-punk dissidents Le Tigre and garage-rock rapscallions Rocket from the Crypt. Justin Timberlake and Outkast leak their first new recordings in years.

• Speaking of Timberlake: In an ongoing effort to elevate his name beyond tweenagers, Jus-

• Chris Brown teases his public redemption, only to then pull the rug out from underneath the American public. Pitchfork tines are sharper and torch-fires burn hotter than ever before. Team Breezy continues to defend their beloved through silly hashtags and uninspired insults.

• Adele’s latest album is astonishingly upbeat, supplementing her specialty of smoky blueeyed soul with inflections of girl-group pop and empowering, cheerful blues rock. Mass confusion results.

• After Metallica’s 3-D concert film disappoints at the box office, execs realize that there’s not much juice to be squeezed out of the whole 3-D-concert-films thing, effectively killing the young trend.

• Radiohead, Jack White and the Flaming Lips collaborate on something especially bizarre.

• West and Kim Kardashian are a muchpublicized matrimonial item by summer. By winter, the nasty separation begins, resulting in unimaginably entertaining Twitter drama.

On the docket for 2015: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy II: #AfterKardashian.

• Jessie Ware, Action Bronson, Miguel, Charli XCX, First Aid Kit and A$AP Rocky (the latter of whom will make headlines for a rumored Rihanna romance) seriously rise in prominence. The glimmer fades significantly for PSY and Odd Future.

• By summer, everyone has completely forgotten the cause célèbre known as Pussy Riot, if they haven’t already.

• Although Digital Domain, the company responsible for the Tupac hologram at Coachella 2012, filed for bankruptcy last September, there is a renewed surge of interest in hologram performances by the year’s close. Elvis Presley returns to the stage in 2014.

• On the subject of notable Philly-ites, Diplo remains devilishly prolific, further reminding you that no matter how many things you do in a day, he’ll somehow be able to accomplish three times that. Also, expect a stupendous record from Kurt Vile. He’s been rather dormant in 2012, but that’s all just part of the slow build-up for his brain-bending psychedelics out this autumn.

• A massively important name associated with the 1980s unexpectedly dies.

• Finally, Dr. Dre’s Detox still doesn’t come out.

As of this writing, hip-hop’s equivalent to Chinese Democracy is at least 11 years in the making; as of Dec. 31, 2013, it’ll be 12. But c’mon, we just narrowly avoided Armageddon. Must we really tempt the fates again? n

Since his debut in 1969, Brooklyn-born, African-American/Puerto Rican vocalist/ songwriter Garland Jeffreys has been hard to define: Is he a racial protest singer who likes reggae, or a rocker who likes the darker shade of the black-born blues? Jeffreys, 68, grew up loving doo-wop legend Frankie Lymon, hung out with rock legend Lou Reed in college and has worked with a wide range of artists that includes Dr. John, Sonny Rollins, James Taylor and Linton Kwesi Johnson.

Fitting him into one musical genre is like forcing him to choose one ethnicity.

“It’s always been hard for me to feel completely at ease, but how much of that is due to being born mixed race and brought up in a community and time in history that wasn’t always OK with it is hard to gauge,” Jeffreys recently told the Arizona Republic’s Kellie Hwang. “Certainly, today things are changing for the better in terms of race relations in our country, but they aren’t by any means where they need to be in terms of eradicating racism. Songwriting and performing enabled me to move beyond my neighborhood and have a full and rewarding life.”

After taking a long hiatus to enjoy fatherhood, Jeffrey returns to the touring grind, and he brings his largely autobiographical oeuvre to the Queen, performing many of his hits, including “Don’t Call Me Buckwheat,” “Wild in the Streets” and his anthem, “Hail, Hail Rock ‘n’ Roll.” He’ll also play selections from his aptly named, critically-acclaimed 2011 CD, The King of In Between, like “The Contortionist,” a damn-near-dead-ringer for the Rolling Stones’ “Miss You,” and the powerful and poignant “Coney Island Winter.”

Today, Garland Jeffreys is a perfect fit for this browner, digitalized world. As he told the Republic: “I like how there’s no barrier to entry, and that it’s a much more level playing field. I think it’s a somewhat kinder and more humbled industry and much more collaborative than it used to be.” (Eugene Holley Jr.)

In Chinese astrological terms, the Year of the Dragon is due to end in early February, allowing a comfortable transition into 2013, the Year of the Snake—which, by the way, is responsible for Bob Dylan, Art Garfunkel and Kanye West. In the interest of informing the public through half-baked speculation, let’s dive into some predictions relating to music—and its makers—in the new year. (Note: Everything here should be taken with a massive grain of salt, except for, of course, the forecasts that end up coming true.

I know you lived in Madison for a while. Got any great Mad Town stories?

Savage Love got its start in Madison: I wrote my first columns on a computer in the back office of Four Star Fiction and Video, where I worked as a night manager/VHS-tape-slingin’ clerk. I did other things—after-hours things—in the storeroom of Four Star. What would you say to Ann Coulter, who said that if her son told her he was gay, she’d “tell him he was adopted?”

Parental rejection of a gay child (which doubles a gay kid’s already quadrupled risk for suicide), the implication that adopted parents are less emotionally invested in their children and that adopted children are loved conditionally—only Ann Coulter could pack so much hatred, malice and emotional violence into a single “quip.” I’m not sure what I would say to Coulter—I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting her—but I can’t imagine that any child of Coulter’s, gay or straight, would be on speaking terms with her anyway, so I’d probably tell her that her feelings about her hypothetical children are irrelevant.

I have been treated badly in several past relationships. I am now in a great one, but I have a hard time believing/trusting that nothing bad will happen. How can I get over this?

Something bad is going to happen—believe it.

Sooner or later, your new squeeze will do something bad, and you’ll get hurt. Hopefully the bad that happens won’t be as bad as the bad you experienced in the past relationships—no physical or emotional violence, no unforgivable betrayals, nothing that requires you to end this relationship—but your new partner will behave badly toward you at some point.

How and when is it good/best to use whipped cream?

We’ve covered this before: Whipped cream is NOT A SEX TOY. Now for a quick medical comment: I agree with your suggestion that doctors give “flaredbase” advice to patients who use anal toys. But there’s a simple way for a person to remove an object that is stuck in the rectum. They should squat—do a deep knee bend—stay still, relax, breathe and voila! The item will pop out onto the floor. Feel free to pass this advice on to others who might benefit!
