MARPLE photographer Helen Spiegl celebrated a recent award success – and may win another this year.

The accomplished portrait photographer won the coveted Equestrian Photographer of the Vicki, Archie and Helen

Year for the second time in the 2020 Xperience Awards held virtually.

And Helen has two entries through to the 2021 finals in the first heat in the Dog Studio Portraits category, with Lily, a Cockapoo who lives in Mellor, and

a Staffie named Winnie.

The awards, run by The Xperience Group of professional portrait photographers in the UK and Ireland, celebrate creativity in the photography industry.

Helen also held the title in 2018, and her latest success follows being named MPA’s (Master Photographers Association) North West Pet Photographer 2020 and Overall Photographer of the Year 2020.

Her winning photo was of 20-year-old eventer Archie who twice qualified for British Eventing’s Badminton Grassroots finals. The shoot was commissioned by Diane, mother of Vicki Ardern who has owned Archie for most of his life.

Vicki said: “We were nervous about the shoot, but Helen was great. To anyone considering a photo shoot I’d say go for it. It’s a great experience, great fun, and Continues on page 9 ›

The nightmares that led to life-saving cancer diagnosis A MARPLE woman’s disturbing dreams helped to save her life after leading her to discover she had breast cancer.

Carolann Bruce has written about her nightmares, diagnosis, and health battle in ‘The Dream That Saved My Life’.

Carolann, who previously worked as a nurse facilitator at Stepping Hill Hospital and now runs the Debut Academy (local dance/ performing arts) in Stockport, said: “I had really severe nightmares and then dreams which featured a dark shadow man regularly appearing over my shoulder.

One night, the man took me to hospital and showed me two patients, one of whom I was nursing with a tumour although I don’t have experience of working on a cancer ward. This patient died while in my care and I was told I needed to look after a second cancer patient.’’

Carolann writes in her book: “I looked at my patient, who was staring straight into my eyes, and I suddenly felt as though I was looking into a mirror. Those frightened eyes staring back at me were the same eyes I had been looking at in the mirror for the last 42 years.’’

After the dream Carolann knew something was different but didn’t understand what it meant. She felt both patients were her and she was looking at two different outcomes and had received a warning. After checking her breasts and finding a small lump, she had a GP’s appointment two days later which was “one of the worst days of my life.”

Instead of waiting two weeks for a mammogram, she booked a scan privately which was the start of her cancer journey.

Carolann was treated at a private hospital in Crewe which she recognised from her dream. Her treatment involved chemotherapy, a mastectomy and reconstruction which she said involved creative and clever surgery.

Carolann believes the cause of her cancer could have been stress: “I believed I was healthy; I was a dancer and never smoked. During my journey, I met other inspirational women but sadly they passed away.’’

At the time of her dreams in 2011, Carolann began to make notes about her nightmares and health battle, and during the first Lockdown she turned them into a book which was

published in December and has been well received.

Fully recovered, she has regular check-ups but urges all women to routinely check their breasts. The dreams stopped as soon as she was diagnosed but Carolann is convinced she was visited in her nightmares by an angel of death.

Even though she still gets very tired in the evenings, she is positive and considers herself one of the lucky ones. “Women need to talk about it and regularly check their breasts. Breast cancer can also affect men, so they need to be aware of it. If you’re not happy with a GP’s diagnosis, challenge it and ask for a second opinion.’’

“My story is out there to help others. I believe I got cancer for a reason, to help others in the future.

I know I had to go through this so some good could come out of it for others. Nurses also need to read the book to see breast cancer from a patient’s point of view,” Carolann added.

Carolann sent her book to only one publisher – J J Moffs, an independent publisher specialising in first time authors – before it was accepted, and there’s talk of her story being made into a TV series.

It was back in May 1971 that Gosling Newsagents, on the corner of Stockport Road and Hollins Lane, was bought by the current owner’s parents. Within a few years, the toy department, which was doing well, moved and became the Toy Inn where Bridgford’s now stands.

There was one further and very important move to the present site of Gosling Toymaster’s on Hollins Lane.

For older Marple residents with long memories, the building was once a butcher’s and a print shop.

Goslings joined the newly formed Toymaster Buying Group, a collection of independent toy shops which are found throughout the UK. The shops joined forces for greater buying power.

In 2009, the second generation of the

family took over the business.

Sale agreed on Marple Wharf as target hit CONGRATULATIONS to all involved in the Marple Wharf Project, on successfully raising the funds to purchase this historically important Grade 2 building. ‘As soon as we have completed the legal purchase of the building it’s full steam ahead on applying for grant funding. We are hopeful that our application for Heritage Lottery funding will be successful, especially as our plans fit neatly within the guidelines.

We expect funding applications to take most of this year.

‘In the meantime, once

we get the keys from the Canal and Rivers Trust, we will make a start clearing out the rubbish from the ground floor and making the structure watertight and secure.’

There are still plenty of opportunities for people to become involved with the project, both as investors and or as volunteers.

‘We would love to hear from people who would like to lend a hand helping clear the building, raise money, buy a bond or donate their skilled labour. We would also welcome support from local businesses who can help with skip hire etcetera.

Love brings famous US author to Marple AN INTERNATIONAL best-selling author and renowned champion of human rights has chosen Marple as her home marrying local resident Brendan O’Herilhy.

Cathleen Miller was born in the USA but she has travelled widely throughout her life giving her the experiences that have inspired her writing. These have involved interviewing diplomats and heads of state in five continents, rape camp survivors in Kosova and midwives in the mountains of East Timor.

Her biography of United Nations leader, Nafis Sadik, titled ‘Champion of Choice’ was named in the top ten biographies by the American Library Association but it is her book ‘Desert Flower’ that has been the most influential. It tells the story of Somali nomad Waris Dirie and has played a major part in creating awareness of the horrors of female genital mutilation.

The print version has sold over 11 million copies worldwide and translated into 55 languages. A film version was released in 34 countries.

Cathleen has been a professor of English at San Jose State University in California and came to the University of Manchester to serve as Distinguished Chair of Humanities during her term as a Fulbright Scholar.

6 – Marple Review, Spring 2021 HAZEL GROVE MP William Wragg has praised the efforts of High Lane residents to stop the threat of mass development after plans to build thousands of houses on swathes of the greenbelt were suggested five years ago.

Villagers organised protests and launched the High Lane Village Neighbourhood Forum to draw up a neighbourhood plan which, following public consultation, is being assessed by an independent assessor.

Following a local referendum, the final version will go before Stockport Council’s full council for adoption later this year, and help ensure that future developments are appropriate for the small, semi-rural nature of the village.

William Wragg told the Review: “I supported the drawing up of the neighbourhood plan throughout the process, and it’s important across the whole of Stockport that brownfield sites are used for development first. There are several brownfield sites identified around the borough, and helped by money from the government’s Brownfield Housing Fund they should be used before green belt.

“By the end of 2023 Stockport will have agreed its own local plan

Residents earn praise for greenbelt protests and the principles of protecting the green belt, in High Lane and across Stockport, should be paramount,” he added.

Richard Jones, chairperson of the High Lane Village Neighbourhood Forum, stressed the strength of community feeling: “We wouldn’t have got this far in drawing up our neighbourhood plan without residents who supported us every step of the way. None of the committee are planners, so we relied on experts to support us and grant funding to get the plan to the stage it is at today. We’re not against development but it should be the right type, in the right place. It should be brownfield first, and small scale where possible, to blend in and maintain the village’s rural setting.”

Pollution poster prompts Sara to pen publication WHILST honeymooning in San Francisco, High Lane resident and Fine Artist, Sara Kightley, read a poster about ocean plastic pollution. This prompted research, which revealed how heavily plastic is integrated into society and problems with its disposal.

Sara was convinced that educating youngsters was a good start to enlightening people about the problem. Despite being dyslexic, she decided to write and illustrate a book to introduce children to the huge garbage patches scattered across the world’s oceans, stretching from the surface to the ocean floor and drastically affecting marine life.

Stockport Council is working on its local plan following withdrawal from the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework (GMSF) in December. It was liaising with the nine other GM councils to identify potential sites for housebuilding to meet government targets. High Lane’s surrounding greenbelt was suggested but following extensive opposition Stockport withdrew from the collaboration.

Unexploded grenade found and destroyed

Much of Marple came to a standstill on a quiet Sunday afternoon last month (April 25th) after a man fishing in the canal with a magnet caught a hand grenade.

Police stopped traffic and cordoned off a large area. Police and Army vehicles went onto the Green, between Arkwright,

Oldknow and Strines Roads, where sandbags were thrown from the Army truck. Onlookers were kept a safe distance away as the Army successfully carried out a controlled explosion.

All aboard for New Horizons anniversary celebrations Ian Gadd is the new skipper of the New Horizons canal boat in Marple.

When the position became vacant following the previous skipper Peter Sharp’s retirement, former marine and paramedic Ian jumped at the chance and felt instantly at home.

Ian’s varied skills will see him driving and maintaining the 70-foot boat, liaising with passengers, and working with a team of enthusiastic volunteers who help run the operation.

Ian told the Review: “I had lived on my own narrowboat so was completely at ease working with boats. I’m really looking forward to my new role. I love meeting people, spending time on the water, enjoying the fantastic history along our canals, and the great local countryside of course.”

“My first job was taking the boat into dry dock at Kerridge in February for painting. While it was there the temperature dropped substantially and we ended up

staying longer than planned which, although unexpected, was fortunate as it gave me more time to get the work done. Other jobs have included usual maintenance work and getting the boat Covidready. A screen has been fitted internally to separate the crew and passengers ready for our first customers,” he added.

Ian offers two to three hour trips, mornings and afternoons, through High Lane to Poynton.

Evening cruises start this month (May).

New Horizons has been a big part of Marple life for many years and celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. There are lots of celebrations and activities planned, and funding was awarded by the Co-op Local Community Fund to provide 40 free trips for families and individuals living in the SK6 postcode area.

People decided lockdown was perfect for writing memoirs MOST of Elephant Memoirs’ clients are in their eighties, but that didn’t stop them signing up to do their life story books last year. Lockdown gave them a chance to catch up on projects they’d been putting off for years.

The pandemic was a time for cancelling all face-to-face meetings, especially with the old and vulnerable, so personal interviews were out of the question.

With a little bit of patience, however, Joss Carpreau, pictured, persuaded them to download Zoom, or learn how to go online.

But soon she had them chatting away in the safety of their own living rooms.

“The problem for most old people this last year has been loneliness,” says Joss. “Clients enjoy their sessions with me because someone is listening to them, properly, and thinking carefully about their answers.”

Sometimes clients present a completed manuscript that they want turning into a book. It still needs editing many times though. “One customer came with his story on a memory stick, and kept adding to it as we went along. In the end, his book was 430 pages long!”

During lockdown, Joss has picked up photos from clients’ doorsteps, or scanned them in the front porch. “Only one client has presented me with albums of neatly labelled photos. The saddest thing was when an old guy showed me his pictures on his windowsill which his wife had pulled out of their albums when she had dementia. Together, we were able to put them in date order again, and write captions to explain them.”

Elephant Memoirs has now completed ten life story books for people.

Joss’s latest client sadly had a stroke after the third interview, and is now regaining the power of speech. “It’s the first time anything like this has happened, and we’re all praying for him to recover soon. I have lots of questions for him. It’s a lesson not to leave projects like this too late.”

Anthology celebrates work of young writers A NEW limited-edition anthology of poems and stories penned by young people in Marple is now on sale.

They entered the Marple Young Writers competition organised by Phil and Susie Busby from the local Budding Writers creative writing organisation. Susie said: “It was a joy to be part of the project and a privilege to edit the anthology.

There are accomplished poems and entertaining stories from young writers in Marple. I urge people to buy a copy not only to support our writers and get a cracking good read but to also support Mellor Country House charity who receive the proceeds from the sales.”

Well over £200 has been raised so far for Mellor County House which, in normal times, offers short breaks for groups, families, carers and individuals from nearby urban areas.

My father died when I was 28. By the time I started wondering about my father’s childhood, it was too late. But I was lucky. He’d left me a precious legacy. Back in the 60s, my father had written his memoir, the part of his life that was before my time. Last summer I found it in the attic.

Now I feel compelled to tell my story too. To leave something behind to be passed on to children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

How to write your memoir

I’m Joss, the writer behind Elephant Memoirs. Some of my clients have felt overwhelmed when trying to put their complex lives onto paper.

But over a series of informal interviews, in the comfort of their own home, we’ve unravelled their life. And turned it into stories that flow, make sense, and use their own words.

And they haven’t had to write a word of it themselves. They’ve just had to relax and reminisce about the past.

With someone who’s actually listening to them. During the recent COVID 19 lockdown, we’ve chatted over Skype or Zoom, rather than face-to-face.

I do all the heavy lifting. Spelling, punctuation, grammar. I’ve spent most

Helen has been raising money

for Support Dogs UK and offers a number of shoots in return for a donation to the charity.

Sheffield-based Support Dogs UK provides trained dogs for children with autism, seizure alert dogs for adults with epilepsy, and assistance dogs for adults with other physical disabilities. As lockdown eases Helen hopes to restart her charity work, having already raised over £1,600.

Mary’s blooming excited for return of garden event

THE ever-popular Mellor Open Gardens is back this summer with tweaks to make it Covid-safe.

Instead of opening all day Sunday, it will be spread over two afternoons over the weekend July 3rd- 4th from 2pm - 6pm.

Currently between eight and ten gardens will open, in a range of styles and sizes, all with stunning views of the local countryside that Mellor is famous for.

The organisers haven’t finalised the details including whether there’ll be minibus transport between the gardens. However, parking is in the church car park and field.

Mary Hoult, who started the event with friends nearly 30 years ago, said: “We want it to be safe, legal and happy. We’re not offering a programme this year so there’ll be a ticketing system locally, in advance and on the day. Tea and cakes are available, and all proceeds go as always to Cancer Research UK and Mellor Parish Centre. If we’re lucky enough to gain any sponsorship, we’ll put on other facilities such as portaloos.

Council considers plans for new community hub PLANS to develop a new swimming, leisure and community hub at Memorial Park in Marple are currently being considered by Stockport Council.

There are three main options for the land on the site of the library and surrounding area, all including muchneeded facilities to replace the town’s old swimming baths on Stockport Road which closed in March 2018.

The first option would include the demolition of the existing library to make way for a larger building to include both a new pool and library, with access to the building from the same general location as the current library entrance.

The second option would be larger, with the redesign of Hollins House, and removal of the extension on the side.

This would give two main buildings, linked by a shared entrance. The senior citizens hall would also be relocated into the new community space making way for additional car parking on the site of the old senior citizens building.

The final and most extensive option would include a remodelling of the whole area, with the health centre incorporated on the second floor of the new community building as well.

The main drive would be altered from Stockport Road to Parkfield Avenue.

The recent public consultation received a total of 385 responses, with 70 per cent generally in favour of the proposals. According to the council just over half of the responses expressed a preference for the third option.

A raft of suggestions and ideas are now being looked at to help further develop the scheme along with a number of concerns as well, including the fact the pool would only have four lanes.

Stockport Council also conducted a youth survey at the same time, which generated 60 responses from people under 25, calling for sports facilities such as football, as well as social areas and facilities for children, such as an external adventure play area and play equipment in the pool hall.

However despite being in favour of the overall objectives, members of the Friends of Marple Memorial Park, are keen to preserve the woodland at the rear of the library. This would currently be lost to make way for the development and they have come up with an alternative location, to the side of the existing library. This would leave the wooded area intact and would actually provide room for it to be enlarged.

Treasurer Mark Whittaker explained: “We have submitted an idea to turn the scheme sideways, onto the current infants’ play area. This would allow the woodland to stay and actually create space to add more trees. It would also have the added bonus of the current library being able to stay open while

Green group serves up cook book to help save the planet

ENVIRONMENTAL group MESS (Marple, Mellor and Marple Bridge Energy Saving Strategy) has produced their first recipe book ‘Eating to Save our Planet - A Flexitarian Approach’.

MESS started 10 years ago to encourage people to reduce carbon emissions. Two members Elaine Ascott and Hilary Brooks, pictured, produced the free book which is on the MESS website.

Elaine explained the Flexitarian Approach as “one that’s mostly vegetarian but does not cut out meat and fish altogether - the best of both worlds. The meat you do buy should be the highest welfare you can obtain and afford and fish from sustainable species. We’re lucky to have excellent food shops in Marple”.

Hilary added: “We need to reduce food waste.

There’s so much food thrown away which is a cost to us and the environment. If we all do simple things - for example making a list of what we need, shopping locally, buying in-season to reduce air miles, then it’s a win-win situation”.

“The benefits of the alternative location are obvious to us and as the scheme includes development of the play areas this means they could easily be relocated to accommodate this change too, which we think would work very well.

“We have submitted our suggestions and have also shared them with local councillors, receiving positive responses that they will be properly considered by the council’s team. We now need to wait and see how the council responds to all the feedback they have had and the next steps they decide to take,” he concluded.

In a statement Stockport Council said it would provide more detailed information on the public consultation feedback and how this has been incorporated into updated plans in due course.

Angela gears up for ‘no idling’ project

ANGELA HAYES is a woman on a mission.

Passionate about the environment and making sure children breathe in clean air she started a ‘No Idling’ project after joining local environmental group MESS. Angela, pictured, told the Marple Review the project will raise awareness of the damage to the environment and children’s health when drivers sit in their cars with the engine running: “Air pollution affects everyone, particularly children who are more at risk as their lungs are growing. Research shows around 60% of pollution children breathe is during the school run, and part of the problem is due to cars with engines running, or idling, at drop-off and pick up times.”

Angela contacted schools to ask if children could design posters with the aim of creating ‘Clean Air Zones’ around all local schools: “We hope to erect signs encouraging drivers to turn off their engines when picking up or dropping off”.

Schools submitting drawings/posters/ paintings will receive a certificate from MESS, with the best pieces publicised on the MESS website.

Angela’s day job is at The Christie Hospital where she says she’s known to colleagues as an Eco Warrior.

How dog-lover Harley took fundraising lead…

WHEN seven-year-old Harley Wright saw his Mum, Tilly Rose, donate clothes to charity, he decided to find his own good cause.

In November last year, helped by his love of dogs and some research, Harley chose Manchester & Cheshire Dogs’ Home to benefit from his fund-raising.

Harley attends Ludworth Primary School and used Google Classroom to let school friends and teachers know about his campaign. He wrote and delivered letters to neighbours, and contacted supermarkets, garden centres, pet shops and other local businesses. Marple Community Hub also helped him spread the word.

Passers-by often stopped to look at Harley’s garden, so easily spotted the posters advertising Harley’s mission and the donation box outside his house was filled many times over with items for the dogs; towels, beds, leads, food, and dog coats. By the end of Harley’s fundraising a total of 24 boxes were filled and taken to the Dogs’ Home.

It was an extremely busy month for Harley. He collected items from businesses and from people unable to deliver items themselves. Many donations arrived by post.

A GoFundMe page had an initial target of £20 which was easily reached. The end target of £1,000 was also exceeded, with a total of £1,375 raised.

Men’s group open to new members

NEW members are welcome at the Marple Men’s Group which started during the pandemic to help those facing tough times.

Founder Aron Thornley, who lives in Marple, felt there was a need to encourage men to get together and chat over their worries and concerns at this difficult time.

Now Aron is hoping to gradually expand the group’s numbers and says anyone interested is very welcome to get in touch.

Meetings so far have been held via Zoom but hopefully members can start to meet up regularly as Government restrictions ease.

Currently members meet on-line every Wednesday evening from 9pm and are welcome to join, even with the sound or video off if they prefer.

Aron said: “Everyone is struggling in some way during the pandemic with different levels of pressure, depression or anxiety. A lot of people are having a really tough time at the moment. I have always been interested in men’s health and I would like Marple Men’s Group to be a first port of call for any men currently struggling. From there I can refer individuals to different services if needed.

“Men are traditionally bad at expressing their feelings so come and have a chat. Sessions usually last about an hour-and-a-half and we cover a whole range of topics. This is a great place to get some support if you need it, have a chat and discuss worries. We’re a friendly bunch so come and join us.’’

Support rings out for bell initiative

Harley’s initial aim was to buy toys and treats for the dogs to give them a special Christmas, but the amount raised would have emptied an entire pet shop of toys and resulted in some dogs having rather poorly tummies. He decided to spend just £70 on doggy Christmas gifts and the remainder boosted funds for the Dogs’ Home’s Christmas dinner campaign When Harley informed the Dogs’ Home of his first fund-raising efforts, he was given a tour to see the dogs that he’d worked so hard to help. Although Harley would

have liked to take all the dogs’ home, he was happy to be given a bag of Dogs’ Home goodies and chocolates.

Harley plans to support another good cause this November, so keep a look out to see which will be the next charity to benefit from his commitment and enthusiasm.

AN INITIATIVE launched from the belfry of Mellor Church is gathering a national following. The bell ringers decided to use the Feast of St Agatha, the patron of breast cancer patients and bell makers, on February 5th to highlight the need for support to be given to cancer patients and charities.

Bells of all sorts were requested to ring in the style of the NHS clap and it is known that, as well as locally, they were heard in London, Leicester, Hereford and Southampton. This included the Bethany and William famous bells of St Clement Danes church ringing in central London.

Pupils at St Mary’s School in Marple Bridge showed great ingenuity in making their own bells.

At least five cancer charities have benefitted from Ring a Bell Day. It is hoped that Ring a Bell Day will become a recognised national event and help in spreading the word will be appreciated. A date for the diary when it is hoped that all Marple will be out ringing bells to support cancer care – Saturday February 5th, 2022 at 11.00am.

Remembering ‘The Doc’ and his Marple links

TOMMY Docherty, who has died at the age of 92, had strong links to the Marple area having lived in Mellor and Compstall.

He will be remembered as one of football’s great characters.

His playing career included spells at Celtic, Preston, Arsenal and Chelsea and he won 25 caps for Scotland, including some as captain playing in the 1954 World Cup finals.

Known affectionately by all as ‘The Doc’ he managed 12 clubs as well as the Scotland national team, and he is probably best remembered for his five years at Manchester United.

This ended following an affair with Mary Brown, who he remained married to for the rest of his life.

He was a natural raconteur and after football managing ended he made a living on the after dinner circuit, with an endless supply of anecdotes and one-liners. One of his first bookings in this venture was guest of honour at the annual Mellor Lacrosse Club hot pot.

His daughter owned a gift shop on Stockport Road and Tommy was often seen walking near-by and happy to chat with Marple shoppers.

LOCAL fundraiser Ron Townley sadly passed away in November 2020 after a short illness, surrounded by his family.

Ron was the lynchpin and organiser of the annual Marple and District Poppy Appeal for 12 years, camped out in a hut by the bowling pavilion in all weathers and helped by his beloved wife Audrey.

Kevin Murray and Mike Openshaw took over in 2019 and Ron became the Appeal Life President. Kevin said: “If you phoned Ron to see how he and Audrey were, Ron would always turn it around to you.

“He always put other people before himself.”

Ron played the Last Post for 40 years at the Stockport Remembrance Day Service, only taking a break for National Service from 1950-52.

Already a member of the Cheshire Yeomanry Old Comrades Association East Cheshire, Stockport B squadron and A Squadron based in Chester, Ron was asked to become social secretary.

He helped World War Two veterans and widows, visiting them at home or in hospital.

He spent 15 years in the Territorial Army, receiving the Lord Lieutenant’s certificate for outstanding service and devotion to duty.

He was highly respected in military circles, and enjoyed sourcing historical artefacts for The Hat Works Museum.

Born in Heaton Norris, Ron left school at 14 to become an apprentice joiner.

He and Audrey met whilst holidaying in the Isle of Man and spent 64 happy years together having three children Gary, Glen

As a measure of how highly respected Ron was, before his funeral, the cortege led by Luke Shaw from Sharple’s Funeral Directors drove slowly through the streets of Marple into Memorial Park.

The road in and around the War Memorial was thronged with people socially distanced wanting to pay their respects to this kind and unassuming gentleman.

In tribute to former band member Ron who played the bass drum, Marple Band’s Andy Liles played The Last Post and Reveille as the hearse was surrounded by veterans holding the standards.

One of Ron’s friends called out “Goodbye Ron, you were a good man”.

It was a moving occasion

organised with the precision Ron would have been delighted with.

The service at Stockport Crematorium was conducted by Derek Sykes, a friend and lay preacher.

He and Ron used to attend events where Ron would carry the Cheshire Yeomanry Standard and Derek the Cheshire Standard.

Lisa said: “Dad’s shoes are big ones to fill – he was looked up to and respected, unwaveringly honest.

“He never asked for nor sought praise.”

The last words go to Audrey: “He was my best friend, we did everything together, shopping, cleaning, holidays, family gatherings.

“I will miss him every day.”

Parish double for married vicars IN January, Hannah Hupfield was inducted as the new vicar of St. Thomas’, High Lane, and husband Timothy, is the new vicar of St. Martin’s, Low Marple.

The autumn 2020 Review reported on Hannah as she and the family were waiting to move to High Lane, not knowing that Timothy would follow her, albeit to a different parish.

Hannah and Timothy both grew up in Staffordshire, and met as teenagers when they both played in the Staffordshire Youth Wind Orchestra.

Timothy played the oboe and Hannah the clarinet.

Timothy was offered a place at Cambridge to study Natural Sciences and went a year ahead of Hannah to begin his studies at King’s College, whilst Hannah stayed in Tamworth to finish her A levels.

During that year apart when they were both 18 years old, Timothy proposed.

Hannah says this caused something of a stir as she was still at school!

Hannah then went on to study Natural Sciences too at New Hall, Cambridge.

After graduating, Timothy became a church administrator and support worker before training as a secondary school science teacher.

Hannah began exploring a vocation to ordained ministry while working as a youth worker in a church.

Hannah went through a period of discernment and after reflection entered training for ordained ministry at Westcott House in Cambridge and studied for a degree in Christian ministry.

At this time Peter, their son was born and Timothy became a stay-at-home dad.

After training, Hannah and family settled for a curacy in a group of parishes in Lincoln Diocese and had their second child, Mary.

Timothy was drawn to ordained ministry and they returned to Cambridge whilst he trained too.

Following further studies Timothy became a deacon then a priest at Worcester Cathedral.

Tracy set to re-start art sessions

LOCAL artist Tracy McGuinness-Kelly is re-starting her weekly art club in Goyt Mill as lockdown measures are eased.

Creative activities have a positive effect on people’s mental wellbeing and Tracy’s ‘Art Stop’ is for adults who enjoy creative interaction and participation in artistic activities.

People can explore their own creativity, whatever their ability, in a gentle, peaceful, and creative space.

Offering a range of materials, activities, and projects, some sessions are artistled, whilst others are more informal with people working on their own projects.

Sessions run for two hours one afternoon a week and cost £20 per person. Refreshments are provided.

Tracy’s children’s art club re-opens the week of May 25th.

When Timothy’s curacy was coming to an end, they started to look for parishes in this area.

They independently saw that the two parishes were looking for a new priest and felt immediately drawn to apply.

They are looking forward to settling in and excited to meet their new congregations.

They love hill walking and spent many holidays in and around the Peak District and know how fortunate they are to be so close to beautiful countryside.

Hannah is an enthusiastic but not very good knitter and Timothy likes to crochet.

They love Bake Off and the children love making cakes with Timothy.

Marple projects benefit from Hydro Awards

Cyclists in the saddle for renovation plan BRABYNS Park is a well loved feature of Marple, used daily by a range of users including dog walkers, runners, walkers, and families, groups of young people, horse riders and children on their way to the local schools.

Unfortunately over time the bike track has fallen into disrepair and many people may not even be aware it is tucked away in the middle of the park, hidden behind some overgrown brambles and off the major paths.

Now this is all set to change as a group of local cyclists under the banner Bike@Brabyns are looking to renovate the track and start offering coaching for children, family rides and a regular schedule of maintenance to help look after the track.

The work is endorsed by the Friends of Brabyns Park group who want to see all

areas of the park being used to their full potential.

Local bike repair businesses owner Pete Young of Pedal Power Marple noted “with the boom in cycling throughout Covid we have been extremely busy repairing bikes, and it would be great to have somewhere safe off road for people, especially families, to develop a love of cycling and this will lead to people cycling more often”.

Local parent Oli Lougheed, who walks or cycles through the park almost every day, and occasionally rides at the track with his children, added: “The bike track is already fun and quite well used, but when there’s a big mix of ages it can get a bit dangerous, and it could be a nicer area for everyone to use.

“It would be great to have different routes for young

children on balance bikes, beginners who are pedalling, and right up to big kids like me who want to try and jump.”

This year once rules allow the group hope to arrange: • A maintenance day at the track clearing some undergrowth, repairing the surface and picking litter.

• Some beginner skills sessions.

• A family ride around the park.

• Engage with other local cycling groups and stakeholders to grow the support.

And in the future it is proposed to start a cycling club based at the park.

FIVE Marple projects are benefiting from the Environmental Challenge Awards 2021 run by Stockport Hydro Ltd. Almost £6,000 was raised by Stockport Hydro with the sale of renewable energy and members’ donations.

The beneficiaries are: • The Garden House received a contribution towards establishing a riverside sensory garden.

• Rose Hill Primary School received monies to create a

pond in the school grounds.

• All Saints Primary School received a donation towards creating an allotment to benefit children and local community.

• Marple-based The Virtual Village Project, part of Community Active Stockport, received a contribution towards equipment to film local walks and create virtual guides for older people living alone/in sheltered accommodation.

• The 1st Marple Scout

Group received funding to support packs of all ages to gain environmental badges.

These involve learning about recycling, gardening in the Memorial Park, litter picking and visits to the Hydro/recycling centres.

Stockport Hydro is run by volunteers and produces power fed directly into the National Grid.

Sixteen projects received donations but due to the pandemic it was not possible to hold an awards ceremony.

Busy time for association MARPLE Bridge Association has had a busy start to 2021.

It thanked Marple Area Committee, which represents Marple North, Marple South and High Lane Wards, for providing a £500 grant towards refurbishing the Peace Garden. Volunteers will start work once Covid restrictions ease.

MBA donated £50 to The Northumberland Arms towards printing costs of a local walks’ booklet, available to buy at Lofthouse Butchers, Portland Wine and Compstall Post Office.

Proceeds will go towards

the upkeep of the pub’s defibrillator. And £50 has been donated to Max Ingham, who collects Easter eggs annually for Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Local photographers – amateur and professional – are invited to submit photos of the local area – people, buildings, or landscapes – for the 2022 MBA calendar and postcards to be published later this year.

How our pupils have adjusted to the new ways of working It was important for us early on to ensure that we maintained excellent connections with our pupils and families.

Our Pastoral Team worked hard to keep in touch with the pupils by organising weekly Form Class Teams catch ups and quizzes.

We made phone calls and kept the communication going during the holidays too.

More recently we were able to increase the contact to daily Teams calls each morning, to help our pupils get off to a positive start to the day.

What’s been the impact on their mental health?

Some families have contacted us to say that their child felt isolated or overwhelmed.

On these occasions staff were able to do some 1:1 interventions to support the pupil and advise their parents.

Our motto was definitely one that this was a marathon, not a race, and that struggling was ok.

We stressed that every individual needed to find a coping mechanism that worked for them.

To help lift the mood we promoted a ‘Feel Good Friday’ vibe with our staff.

Seeds of hope for respite charity WITH a glimmer of hope on the horizon and green shoots of normality finally arriving – a local charity is celebrating as its muchloved annual fundraising event gets the go-ahead.

Mellor Country House is a small self-funded charity providing much-needed respite for disadvantaged families, carers, groups, and individuals A plant sale – one of the charity’s biggest annual events – including showstopping hanging baskets has launched for spring, after last year’s event was cancelled due to the pandemic.

The in-person event will be held at Mellor Country House over the weekend of

May 22-23 with government advice adhered to at all times.

There will be high-quality, affordable plants, famous hanging baskets direct from the charity’s grower, and a large selection of shrubs and bedding plants in recyclable trays.

Light refreshments will be on sale to enjoy outside or takeaway, with proceeds also going to the charity.

Curtain set to rise for budding playwright THE recent writer’s competition, giving playwrights the opportunity to compete with others to get their work produced before a live audience, has attracted entries of a wide variety of new plays.

The judging panel will soon be announcing the winner and getting to work on its production.

Pauline Rowe, Carver’s lead Production Co-ordinator comments: “It’s a really good time to be producing new work as everything about live theatre

has changed. Having a brand new script and drawing in fresh creative talent brings us extra energy and new opportunities.

“The past 12 months have changed the way we work together, but we’ve all learned so much and it’s been an enriching challenge.”

The Carver’s recent play, Darkness Visible, is being shown online and features local actor Kate Millward.

the fear of the dark experienced by many people.

The Carver’s aim is to be back on stage by the end of the year and members are eagerly waiting to start rehearsals for their next play.

village, Salt of the Earth, by John Godber, will be the Carver’s first production in front of an audience for some time.

Like everyone else, they are waiting for confirmation that all is going according to the government’s plan and that the roadmap is working well.

They are currently unable to publish any definite dates but are keen to return to treading the Carver Theatre boards as soon as possible.

Top-class restaurant unveils exciting plans for the summer AS GOVERNMENT restrictions continue to ease, business owner Lee Johnson and his team are delighted to announce exciting new developments coming soon at Windy Harbour, the popular restaurant in nearby Glossop.

Windy Harbour has already been welcoming customers back for outdoor dining in recent weeks and is now planning more events over the coming months.

A new menu has just been launched to coincide with the May 17 Government lifting of restrictions on indoor dining, and indoor table bookings are now being taken over the phone.

There are also plans to organise a summer exhibition promoting wedding facilities and new baby shower functions at the family-run restaurant.

Lee said: “After some difficult months, we were delighted to eventually re-open for outdoor diners and welcome back our loyal customers, as well as some new customers who have enjoyed our takeaway Sunday lunches during lockdown. Now we can offer indoor tables as well, we hope our new menu will be well received.’’

During lockdown Windy Harbour provided weekly sell-out takeaway/ delivery Sunday lunches with a choice of roasts and fish to provide a valued service for their customers.

Lee added: “We are now looking forward to better times and getting back to providing a full service for our diners and those staying overnight with us.’’

Now diners can sit inside, there will be a new Sunday lunch menu, served from 12pm to 6pm, as well as new light lunches and dinner choices.

In recent weeks customers have been enjoying Windy Harbour’s beer garden with large parasols and a marquee for inclement weather.

“We intend to keep the marquee for a little while longer to give us extra table capacity and cater for those people who are still a little wary of being indoors and prefer to sit in the fresh air,’’ Lee commented.

Twists and turns in Chris’ latest novel FANS of Marple author Chris McDonald will be delighted to know he has just released another new book – and there are more to come later this year.

His latest novel “The Curious Dispatch of Daniel Costello’’ is part of the Stonebridge Mysteries series and tells the story of a happily anticipated wedding day.

However, on the morning of the ceremony, the best man is found dead Stonebridge is a small town on the coast of Northern Ireland which two amateur sleuths Adam Whyte and Colin McLaughlin call their home.

The pair set out to discover what happened to Daniel.

Chris said: “This May I will hopefully have two more books out.’’

Chris has always been a fan of crime thrillers and says his

books have plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader absorbed.

Originally hailing from the north coast of Northern Ireland, he now lives in Marple and is a local teacher.

The WI normally meets at Hawk Green Cricket Club on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, and hope to be back there in September.

Currently they meet virtually every month – with some amazing speakers – and have also delivered ‘meetings in

a bag’ to member’s doors to keep everyone connected.

The Book and Craft Groups also meet on Zoom, but the Walking Group is now able to walk in groups of six and soon in groups of 30.

Thriving club bowled over by changes HIGH Lane Cricket Club is thriving, with the new season starting, a full refurbishment underway and new and improved access on Middlewood Road, opening the club up to the community Local councillor Tom Dowse, who secured a multi-agency funding scheme worth £175,000 for HLCC to increase accessibility and improve the quality of the club, said: “This has been an issue for a long time but because I’m standing down from the Council, I had some projects I wanted to finish before May. I’m really pleased we were able to get it all in place before I finished.

“The new access will open the club to the community and make it a community hub and asset.

“When I put this together, we were thinking two or three years but it’s happening now, so it’s worked really well.”

In a video outlining the existing road and access route, James McCarthy, HLCC first team captain, added: “We can barely even call it a road.

High Lane Cricket Club Chris Simpson, HLCC chairman, said: “We’ve had a challenging year as a club.

“The first step in the recovery was the groundwork, and it was very important for us setting it up as a community club, with opportunities for everyone, plus great access.

“We’re seeing interest and enthusiasm across the community and a surge in membership.

“It’s really humbling to see so many people prepared to invest in the sporting facilities in their local area.

“We’ve really opened it

up for the future now.”

The club set up a fundraising page for donations for the improved access and reached their target of £3,000, finishing with £3,400, thanks to the support of the community with over 130 donations.

The club hopes that the revamped access route will be completed soon, with the first cricket matches scheduled to go ahead this month (May) and the refurbishment of the pavilion to be finished

by June.

Cricket games have begun again at HLCC, for the first time in 18 months,

and the renovations continue alongside.

Chris added: “I want to say thank you to everyone as we couldn’t achieve these things without community support.

“The new-look club aims to provide the community with a great local hub for sporting needs, as well as the positive social impact it will have.”

HLCC is appealing to the community to get involved. They want the club to be open to other societies, and clubs, for everyone to enjoy.

Tapestry graces church wall

TAPESTRY of Madonna and Child in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Marple Bridge, As we all know, it has been impossible to attend church services over the last year and this has somewhat curtailed the congregation and visitors to St. Mary’s from being able to enjoy the beautiful tapestry completed

by David Burke who sadly passed away in March 2020.

His family kindly donated the tapestry to the church during lockdown.

It has now been hung above the baptismal font

and a member of the congregation, who managed to attend one of the first

masses since lockdown measures were lifted, said it looks majestic being sited where children are christened.

There is a laminated information sheet about David which will be left in proximity of the tapestry for anyone to read when they enter the church.

First Worker Bee Market A WORKER Bee Market takes place in the Windsor Castle pub car park, Marple Bridge, on Saturday May 22, 10am to 2pm.

It is one of the first outdoor Worker Bee Markets this year with more than 20 hand-picked talented local artisan makers showcasing their handmade crafts and gifts alongside the Windsor Castle Fruit and Veg stall which helped feed the local community through 2020.

Many local small businesses and sole traders rely on the markets for their income, but none have been able to trade for months.

The last 2020 market – which run across Stockport postcodes – was in the autumn following a stop

and start year that saw only seven of the scheduled 23 markets going ahead.

There are plans to relaunch the delayed Worker Bee Artisan Awards to celebrate and reward the best local artisan makers and traders, as well as the most welcoming venues.

run by a seasoned market trader who saw a gap for a new kind of market to help local communities access the best artisan and local produce stalls, whilst giving traders the best opportunities to showcase and sell quality handmade goods.

New Virtual Village initiative to tackle social exclusion MARPLE resident Aimee Glennon is the project leader of a new exciting initiative called The Virtual Village aimed at tackling loneliness and social exclusion due to not being able to access the internet.

Aimee is well-qualified to undertake the project as her thesis – part of her Sociology degree – examined digital disadvantages for older people in Marple who become socially isolated from family, friends, and neighbours.

Funding from Stockport Homes, Stockport Local Fund, Stockport Hydro and Stockport-based CDL Software, enabled the Virtual Village to start, and purchase tablets, an action camera, the website, Facebook, plus data and sim cards.

Aimee is setting up the community website and Facebook page, and will invite local businesses to submit footage, or invite her to film with them.

The project will liaise with local care homes, sheltered accommodation and community groups, to

Aimee Glennon enable them to conduct Zoom meetings to explain the project’s benefits, and encourage them to get involved with their members and residents.

The project is aimed at older residents, especially those living alone and in sheltered accommodation within walking distance of Marple centre.

Using an action camera, a project worker will film safe walking routes, points of interest, and access points to local shops and community organisations, showing stopping places and benches.

Verified volunteers will visit and share the footage with people at home or

in care homes via tablets showing them how to access more information about the organisations and their services digitally.

It is hoped the project will boost people’s skills and confidence using digital media, and their connectivity and frequency in attending local activities.

Aimee explained that the Stockport Hydro funding will enable them to bring a different slant to the project, encouraging residents to notice the environment on their daily walks.

The project is pleased with the Marple Review publicity as it ties in perfectly with the Virtual Village launch – print and digital media coming together to mutually benefit local people.

Aimee said: “I hope people who see it in print will get involved and benefit from it.”

All the fun of the fete MELLOR Church Country Fete takes place on Saturday, July 17 with organisers following government Covid guidelines.

With no fete last year, this year’s event will be a very special occasion on the church field starting at 1pm when new Rose Queen Hannah will be crowned, followed by fun and games.

Activities include children’s races, Punch and Judy show, face-painting,

bouncy castle, football, and golf skills, ‘Let your Teddy catapult to Mars’, a wacky (waggy!) Dog Show with prizes for pooches, and the amazing human fruit machine.

The afternoon’s final event is the infamous tugof-war. There are lots of side-shows, bric-a-brac, two tombolas, plants, and toys.

Team recognised at Care Awards Arbour Court’s five finalists

NOT one but an amazing five staff at Arbour Court care home in Marple have been recognised for representing the best of the North West’s social care workers by making the finals of the Great British Care Awards.

The annual awards celebrating excellence in the home care and care home sectors, promote best practice, and recognise those demonstrating excellence in their field.

Nominations came from colleagues, relatives, residents, and other healthcare professionals.

Finalists are selected by judges within the North West. Every nomination is a testament to each person’s dedication and passion for relationship-focused care.

The finalists are:

• General Manager Kelly Tatton in The Care Home Registered Manager Award for her hard work and dedication to the people of Arbour Court.

• Costa Gavrila for the Social Care Nurse Award.

• Edmundo Caballero for the Care Home Chef Award.

Food bank working hard to meet demand THE Pantry, Marple’s own Food Bank, is helping to ensure that no one in the Marple area and beyond goes hungry during these very difficult times.

The Marple Review spoke to Chris Buckley who takes the leading role in organising volunteers, and managing the food collection and distribution.

Chris said the Food Bank began 11 years ago, inspired by a parishioner from All Saints Church.

Since then and up to March 2020 up to 15 bags of food were distributed each week.

The Pantry, based at the Connect Building (Outreach of All Saints Church) on Queen Street, saw demand increase to about 45 bags of food per week since the first Lockdown.

There’s no defined catchment area and no referral is necessary for someone to receive food.

Anyone in need can go to the Connect Building between 10am-midday on Saturday mornings where they’ll be made welcome.

Outreach Workers take bags of food to distribute to anyone in Marple who needs something extra, and they’ll also be directed to the Food Bank.

Local schools, GP surgeries and Marple

Website have been informed about this important resource.

Residents, shops, community groups and businesses donate food and cash which is used to buy food; donations can be dropped off at the Connect building, which is Covid secure, on Saturday mornings.

Chris said: “We not only give out food but try to have a conversation and offer help in other ways.

“Volunteers at Connect can give basic advice and All Saints Church has people who are experts in money problems, debt counselling and run a job club helping people find jobs by assisting with writing a CV and filling in applications. We are an advice hub.”

Connect ran art classes,

mother and toddler groups, a youth group and provided a meeting place to socialise.

These will restart when the restrictions are over.

Chris thanked everyone for being so generous donating food and helping in any way to keep the Food Bank going, especially during the Lockdowns.

THIS summer’s Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) Arts & Gardens Trail Marple takes place over the weekend of July 2nd-3rd from 10.30am-4.30pm.

Several venues form part of the trail with art exhibited outside or – Covidpermitting – inside.

Along the trail people can peek into some of Marple’s glorious gardens.

With big and small spaces, visitors may find a plant sale of Freesias, a display of Gardenias or a gathering of garden gnomes.

Expect to see Original art for sale including prints,

ceramics, and cards, plus refreshments and possibly a slice of cake!

Every penny raised will help to give RNLI lifesavers all they need to stay safe and come home to their families this summer.

Summer is the busiest season for the RNLI, and it expects 2021 to be a scorcher as the pandemic is keeping more people on home shores.

A tradition synonymous with the summer seaside is the RNLI’s lifesavers answering the call for help.

No matter where the call comes from, on the beach or open sea, or how someone gets into

difficulty, and whether it’s day or night, RNLI rescuers drop everything to answer the call, every time, and save everyone they can.

Dog deliveries are going down a treat!

ONE of the few positives of the last year has been that many of us have been able to spend more time with our favourite furry friends and often our pampered pooches have provided the companionship and love that has been missing while we have been distanced from friends and family.

So with perfect timing, a couple from New Mills has come up with an exciting new way for owners to say thanks to their dogs in the form of a monthly box of treats and toys.

Named after one of their own dogs, Fief, Natalie Coverley and her partner Stewart Bowden have launched the ‘Black Fief’ company, a subscription service, sending boxes direct to the homes of dogs of all sizes and breeds, the length and breadth of the country. Contents are changed every month but always include an interesting mix to keep dogs healthy and happy.

Natalie and Stewart launched the business last October after seeing how much their own dogs loved playing with toys and trying out new treats.

Despite lockdown and difficult trading conditions for many companies, their idea has got off to a great start and they are rapidly building a loyal client base of four-legged supporters and their grateful owners.

“We have seen how excited our own dogs get when we give them new treats and toys and they are allowed to open them themselves, so started developing the idea from there.

Manny is only young and is a real chewer so we were always looking for toys that were durable and held his interest, even for him – an ideal tester.”

Therefore, Golden Retriever Manny and Labrador French Mastiff cross Fief are very much part of the team. ‘The boys’ have been appointed chief testers for the products, making their jobs, like their

owners, a real labour of love as they give it their all, playing with and chewing all the wonderful products that are considered for the boxes - Black Fief is a real passion for them all!

Natalie and Stewart love receiving feedback, photos and even short videos showing the expression on the dogs’ faces and some of their antics as they open the boxes to see what is inside.

Cricket returns for 2021 Alex and Jenny Huddleston, winners of free fish and chips from Mr Chips

Winners frying high after contest win ALEX and Jenny Huddleston have won free fish and chips for two people each month for the rest of the year at Mr Chips in Marple.

They were among hundreds of Review readers who entered the free-to-enter competition featured in the winter 2020 issue.

Their entry was first out of the hat.

Alex and Jenny, who live in Marple, said: “It was a lovely surprise to win the competition as we usually can’t win anything!

“It’s especially nice as Mr Chips in Marple has excellent fish and chips, which we know we’re definitely going to enjoy.”

And Mr Chips’ offer of 50 per cent off a large portion of fish and chips on one Saturday

last November also proved popular, with over 80 customers presenting Review coupons for the offer.

The offer celebrated owner Wayne Wood’s fifth anniversary of running the popular eatery on Derby Way. “It was an absolutely fabulous response,” Wayne said.

“We were extremely busy all day and picked up a lot of new customers.”

Wayne has been in the business for 25 years since the tender age of 14 when he first helped in a chippy.

Originally from Reddish, Wayne gained a Hotel and Management qualification from Buxton College, and previously ran fish and chip shops in Rochdale and Macclesfield

Wayne runs the ecofriendly chip shop with no plastic, and sources only local suppliers including Dentonbased Bennett’s potatoes, Manchester’s Smithfield Market for fresh cod and haddock daily, and Greenhalgh’s for his pies.

Wayne’s well known for his generosity, with special deals for local brownie packs, free chips for local councillors who organise litter picks, and discounted food to local pubs taking part in fund-raising events.

Mr Chips sells traditional and popular foods, plus spam fritters, battered Mars bars, pickled gherkins and eggs, and milk shakes and slushes.

Mr Chips remained open during the third lockdown.

“I’d like to say a massive ‘thank you’ to the Marple community for their continuing and fantastic support,” Wayne said.

Wayne and his staff serve walk-in customers from a table inside the shop, with customers remaining outside, and this will stay the same for the time being: “It’s a winning formula,” Wayne added. “We’re like a chippy drive-through but without the car!”

Mr Chips’ opening hours are Monday to Saturday 11am-8pm, and Sunday 4pm-8pm.

It is also part of Just Eat and offers a home delivery service.

CRICKET at Hawk Green CC is back for the 2021 season.

Matches will be played every Saturday until September 11 on our ground at Rhode Field in Hawk Green.

We are delighted to be able to reopen our facilities for hire to the local community, with spaces to suit many social and business needs.

Under current covid-restrictions, the club’s vast outside space and outdoor seating is available for use and its secluded location makes it perfect for fitness classes, community groups etc The venue’s 120 capacity indoor facility is also available for hire for all gatherings (Covid restrictions permitting) or for use by any parent and child or support groups looking for a new venue to restart their activity.

The club is also taking bookings for indoor fitness classes.

A Hawk Green CC spokesperson said: “Our cricket club has been at the heart of our community since its inception in 1909, and we are delighted to be able to begin to open our doors again to host a variety of groups and classes at our wellequipped venue.

“We are also hoping that, coming out of lockdown, people will take the opportunity to try something new, and our junior teams are open to all ages wanting to come and have their first taste of the game.

Keeping Carl’s memory alive THE BAGNALL family, who lost Carl tragically in January after a battle with mental health, are keeping his memory alive.

They are honouring their “kind and generous” son and brother through inspiring local community work.

Carl was found at Marple Aqueduct, and his family are campaigning to ensure the area is made safer and more suitable for vulnerable people.

Carl’s mother Michelle is working with the Canal & River Trust and local councillors

to improve the area and raise awareness surrounding suicide and mental health.

Michelle said: “After Carl had passed, we realised there was an issue at the Aqueduct.

I contacted the Trust and discussed what I felt needed to be done. I wanted some lighting, signs, and noticeboards for people struggling with mental health. I think if you can physically see something, it outlines that somebody cares for you and loves you - that’s much more powerful than just looking at a phone number.”

Remembering his connection with the park Michelle said: “Carl used to live in Marple Bridge, his friends all live in Marple and we know he spent a lot of time there. We’re very excited because it’s so important for us.”

Brother Connor, 23, paid tribute to Carl through various challenges and fundraising which brought the community together and raised £12,809 which not only covered Carl’s funeral, but also his memorial bench, birthday celebration, and continued work at the Aqueduct.

Connor also completed the Manchester Half Marathon in memory of Carl and raised £1,300 for MIND which supports people suffering with their mental health.

THERE has never been a better time to join Ludworth & Mellor WI. This year you can join Ludworth & Mellor WI for £22.40 which is almost half the usual fee of £44 and works out at only £1.86 a month. Less than the price of a cup of coffee!

We are planning to hold our first postCovid meeting on July 1 and Cheryl from Stockport Gin will be joining us in our celebrations. She will be telling us how she and her husband Paul turned their dreams into a reality and Stockport Gin was born! We may have to sample some gin too.

And there’s more … the reduction in membership fee will not mean a reduction in the quality of our ongoing monthly meetings. The July meeting will be the start of what promises to be an exceptional programme. The committee responsible for organising this year’s speakers and

events is working hard to make it a really special year and we have ear marked extra funding for this. When the time is right and members feel comfortable with going further afield, we will be happy to support that too.

We’ve always tried to give our members value for money but this year we will be offering a double bonus, after what has been a challenging 12 months for everyone.

Our meetings are held at our Covid-safe Hall on Lower Fold on the first Thursday of each month. It’s 2pm for a 2.15pm start with a bit of WI business followed by our speaker and time for refreshments and socialising.

THE Friends of Rose Hill Station (FoRHS) continue to win awards - even during Lockdowns.

At a recent online ceremony, hosted by the Community Rail Network, the volunteer group was awarded Lead Gold in the ‘It’s Your Station’ category which highlights community participation, sustainability, and gardening achievements.

Also featured was a PowerPoint presentation on the station’s history for local community groups which is updated and available for online presentations.

In the past year, the group has expanded the platform embankment planting area and community orchard and created a ‘help yourself’ herb garden. Work was limited to periods of volunteers working for single, two and six persons in line with Covid guidelines.

Rose Hill took top prize in the 2019 Cheshire Best Kept Station Awards for its gardening projects and community engagements. In the 2020 awards, FoRHS received an online Special Award to recognise volunteers’ efforts and acknowledging the difficulties of maintaining displays during the pandemic.

Irish eyes are smiling on Marple folk band MARPLE folk band the Raintown Seers has received praise from Dublin-based band ‘I Draw Slow’.

The Raintown Seers was formed in 2012 by Christopher Demetriou, who plays violin, and vocalist Neil Fisher who plays guitar and mandolin. Third band member Dan Hall lives in north Nottinghamshire.

Neil told the Review: “We choose our material carefully to combine traditional, contemporary cover versions and original songs.” Chris added: “The band, comprised of a trio of musicians from the north, produce a unique blend of acoustic music with roots in the folk traditions on both sides of the Atlantic.”

Their latest song is ‘My Portion’, a

cover from roots band I Draw Slow, recorded, mixed and video-edited by Chris and sung by Neil. He shot the accompanying video with scenes from the Peak District and Pennines.

Dan, who plays upright bass, said: “We were thrilled to receive a compliment from Dave Holden of ‘I Draw Slow’ who said how much he loved the song and how we really captured the essence and feel of it.

They love hearing their songs covered especially to this standard”. Neil added: “Artists cover other people’s songs from time to time but it’s unusual for established professional artists to offer their support and appreciation. We were certainly surprised”.

The Raintown Seers have performed

in New Mills, Poynton, and Stockport, and also played at the Bath Folk Festival. During Lockdown, the band were busy recording original music with the titles ‘John Riley Revisited’ and ‘All of our Dreams’. Both can be viewed on YouTube.

The pandemic hit the music industry badly, but the Raintown Seers hope to resume playing gigs, festivals, folk clubs, and pubs. You can enjoy their melodic and memorable music on YouTube.

Community unites to create pavilion artwork

AS MANY Marple residents are aware, the Bowling Green Pavilion was built by soldiers returning from World War I in memory of comrades who didn’t return.

A new art installation is being created, publicised by the Marple Review last year and will be represented by all ages in the community. It will embellish the pavilion walls, with a historical WW1 theme but also encompass the park’s beauty, flora, and fauna.

Phase I is funded by Friends of the Park and local charity, The Macnair Trust, and despite three lockdowns the project has managed to make remarkable progress since its launch last July. As a local charity, the Macnair Trust can only use its funds to benefit the public within the Marple Area and felt that this project perfectly fits its remit. The first phase will tackle the rear of the pavilion as it has the greater visibility and involve more volunteer artists.

Art Stop CIC, run by local artist Tracy McGuinness Kelly, and who were responsible for the awardwinning inter-generational art project at Rose Hill Station, have joined forces with the Friends of the Park to enhance the appearance of the pavilion.

Over 40 people who submitted designs to paint roundels provided by Art Stop CIC will see their artwork displayed alongside local schools’ contributions. Tracy provided support via email and phone and said she was “blown away by the wonderful artwork submitted.”

Schools were given 10 roundels and responded very well considering that children were home-schooled during lockdown. Some

schools have already submitted their artwork. Tracy went to Rose Hill Primary over five mornings, where she said the school made the experience very safe for all involved, to help them with their designs.

Mellor Primary School completed theirs in a day. Tracy said: “Year 6 loved using the beautiful resources, some of which had been donated by a retired teacher: It was lovely to have the gorgeous art supplies which gave children the opportunity to use the best materials. Giving people a smorgasbord of papers/crafts resulted in a fantastic piece of art.”

When the roundels are complete, they will

be weatherproofed, fixed to three large panels which will be painted in brick colour, and fastened to the wall.

Tracy asked that much gratitude goes out especially to professional artist Robert Fathers and to 18 year old Rhian Owen, who has generously and consistently donated her time and artistic skills to the project.

Mark Whittaker from the Friends of Marple Memorial Park hopes the installation may take place soon, but the park has only just been given permission by Stockport council for task days.

He gave special thanks to Tracy and her team in managing the project through difficult times.

Phase II could involve a commemoration to the park’s 100th birthday in 2022.

Cricket club bats on with 150th plan – one year on COMPSTALL Cricket Club is marking its 150th anniversary with a special match - a year later than planned due to the pandemic.

The celebration game will take place on Sunday July 11th.

The MCC (Marylebone

Cricket Club) confirmed the match can go ahead with a team from the Lords based MCC providing the opposition.

Other attractions on the day include the Marple Brass Band, a barbecue, bar, and refreshments.

Former club chairman Alan Smith said: “I contacted the MCC to say we were celebrating 150 years which is quite an achievement. We should have marked the milestone in 2020 but, like many events, the match was postponed.’’

The club was formed in 1870 and named the Royal George.

It reformed as Compstall CC and moved to its present ground on Ernocroft Road.

By the end of the 19th Century, Compstall were in the North Derbyshire & Stockport District League.

In 1911, playing in the High Peak League, Compstall convincingly defeated Hyde leading to the newspaper headline ‘Derby day at Compstall - Hyde checked by the villagers’. Compstall then went on to win the league.

In 1952 Compstall was a founder member of the Derbyshire & Cheshire

League, and in 2007 reached the quarter finals of the National Village Cup. Between 2005-2009 the club were League Champions for five consecutive years - a unique feat - and also cup winners in 2008.

Visitors to the club will see a plaque dedicated to Dr Hibbert who sadly died during a match in 1919. The longstanding member was retrieving a ball hit over a fence but slipped and broke his neck.

The new pavilion was opened in 2009 by former England and Middlesex captain Mike Gatting. The £230,000 cost was funded by a £145,000
