Tony’s looking to branch out

Site of the 550 trees near Kinder A HAYFIELD man with a passion for nature is looking for volunteers to join him in setting up an organisation dedicated to planting trees and improving the environment.

Tony Moss hopes to create a Hayfield Tree Society like the one in the Colne Valley in Yorkshire. Started in 1964, it’s a registered charity and volunteers have planted thousands of British trees on industrial waste sites and

unused agricultural land. Tony said: “They’ve built up such a reputation that even water companies use them for planting trees around their reservoirs.”

Once established, the Hayfield Tree Society would advise landowners interested in creating new woods of the options available through the Woodland Trust and help them with the application process. “We’ll organise the trees

and plant them and I’ll supervise them to ensure they get established,” Tony said.

With a grounds maintenance background, Tony has a wealth of experience having been involved in the planning of the Platt’s Wood Project and continues to maintain the trees in the popular community woodland.

Tony has been working with a landowner and Woodland Trust to plant 550 trees on a 2.5acre site adjacent to existing woodland near Kinder Scout: “The landowner particularly wants Beech trees so in 100 years’ time they will hopefully match the stand at Twenty Trees. The Woodland Trust’s plan is to soften the edges of the wood with small trees such as bird cherry, dog rose, birch and willow, with bigger trees including oak and beech in the middle.”

Due to the pandemic, Tony has delayed tree planting until after Christmas when he hopes volunteers can help. If that’s not possible, he and his family will plant the trees as once the whips are delivered they need to be dug in within 7 days.

Meanwhile Tony would love to hear from likeminded nature lovers who would be interested in joining his proposed Hayfield Tree Society.

Davis Blank Furniss launches new online Wills service LAW firm Davis Blank Furniss has created and launched a brand new online service where clients can start a new Will without leaving their home.

The simple and free to use form will help people layout their wishes including; who their money and property will go to on their death; who they would like to leave

specific items to; if they would like to leave money to a nominated charity or organisation; who would look after their children if they are under 18 on their death; and who they would like to inherit their business or shares.

The submitted form would then be a basis for one of Davis Blank Furniss’ solicitors to start drafting the

new Will.

As well as ensuring a person’s wishes are carried, clients can also access advice on trusts, gifts and tax.

Mobility scooter plan rolled out across 100 stations

MOBILITY scooter users can discover more of the country by train.

After a successful trial, a scooter permit scheme has been rolled out across Northern’s network. Scooter-friendly stations in north Derbyshire include Glossop, Buxton, Dove Holes, Edale and Hathersage. There are over 100 stations in total.

Passengers apply for a permit and their scooter is assessed to ensure they’re safe to be carried on board. Users are given personalised stickers for their vehicle. This will be accompanied by a card carried by customers with scooters that don’t have a suitable place to display stickers.

Maxine Myers, Accessibility Improvement Manager at Northern, said: “More than 21 routes across our network are now scooter friendly and more will be rolled out as we make our trains and stations as accessible as possible for passengers. We’re working with the Northern Trains Accessibility User Group to create a phased introduction of routes and stations, and anyone wanting to bring their scooter on our trains should apply for a permit so we can check it meets the standards to make it safe to take it onboard.”

Chris Jackson, Regional Director at Northern, added: “We’re committed to giving people with additional mobility needs the confidence to travel by rail. The mobility scooter scheme is an example of this, and we’ll look to deliver improved accessibility across our network as we roll out similar improvements at other stations.”

Local groups plant trees to help save the planet

THE United Kingdom’s largest woodland conservation charity has launched an ambitious plan to dramatically increase Britain’s tree cover over the next 25 years and is appealing to the public to do their bit.

The Woodland Trust has pledged to plant 50 million trees by 2025 in a bid to tackle climate change and has sent more than 600,000 free trees to community groups and schools which approached them with ideas for greening up their local area.

One High Peak school which has taken advantage of the scheme is Newtown Primary, which received 30 trees including: crab apple, dog wood, dog rose, hawthorn and hazel. They have used the trees to plant a hedge along the bottom of their secret

garden to increase privacy and help reduce pollution from traffic fumes.

Friends of Manor Park received 210 trees and have planted them on land next to the community orchard to replace diseased ash trees and provide a more diverse range of species.

Community group, Bee Wild, have also been hard at work in Bankswood Park, Hadfield, planting the 420 trees they were sent. The volunteers’ aim is to re-wild an area of the park, given to them by the council, to increase the habitat for bees, insects and butterflies. They have already planted a wildflower meadow and treasurer Lisa Ann ParkerMoreton said: “We are going to use the trees to fill in the gaps in an existing hazel hedge and plant another hedgerow. Near the entrance to the park, we are going to plant crab apple trees along the verges to create an orchard.”

For those schools and community groups who missed this year’s deadline they can still apply for a delivery of trees for next spring. A spokesperson for the Woodland Trust said: “We

because due to the current situation with Covid 19 we have plenty of trees spare.”

The Woodland Trust has also launched an Emergency Tree Fund of up to £1m which will initially be offered to 12 local authorities to

help them plant trees and create woods.

Meanwhile they are calling on the nation to help them meet their ambitious target by getting out and planting a tree this winter.

MEMORIES of the Fosbrook Folk Education Trust has been brought together in an online collection.

Founder and Director Liza Austin Strange spent much of lockdown at her Hayfield home posting photographs and film snippets and

the resulting online project ‘Forty Years of Fosbrooks’ is now available for anyone to enjoy on Facebook.

Liza said: “My husband Phil and I, like many others, were locked down at home and although I continued with one-to-one music lessons for some children, I had time to go through the wonderful memories of things the Fosbrooks have done. We watched old videos, with Phil extracting specific clips for burning onto CDs. “Starting from the 1980s to the present, we posted them online and members and friends started commenting. It became apparent that people who had been involved over the years really enjoyed them.”

The collections include photos and write ups by Liza, detailing events through the four decades from festivals and concert tours to social events such as weddings.

Liza - awarded an MBE for services to the community for her folk work explained how she started the group in the 1980s: “I always had an interest in folk music and set up a folk dance club for children at Banks Lane Junior School where I was teaching. Word spread and we introduced step dance classes as well as children’s music lessons.”

More youngsters got involved, Morris and sword dancing classes were added for boys along with band practices, and soon The Fosbrooks were performing at local concerts and festivals. In what must be one of the most unique school-based groups, the Fosbrooks became so successful they performed at UK folk festivals before travelling to Europe and other parts of the world.

“There are too many highlights to choose from, but the events that

stood out were performing at an international folk festival in China in 2004, tours to France, Norway and Sweden, and concerts at top concert halls including the Royal Albert Hall, Bridgewater Hall in Manchester and Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow. But more than those successes was the sense of community we created and enjoyed. It was not just about the children and young people dancing and playing music but also their parents and families being part of something as well.”

“Lockdown has been challenging but I am indebted to the senior students who’ve been so proactive, loyal and supportive about keeping Fosbrooks going online,” Liza added.

Micro carshare scheme

THE Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way people travel.

Many use the car less, choosing to walk or cycle, work at home and have shopping delivered. Others use it more in preference to public transport.

In response, Hayfield Sustainable Transport Ltd (HSTL) is helping people in Hayfield, New Mills and Hope Valley to set up micro car clubs. These involve two or more households agreeing to share a car – arranging to use it at different times, or giving lifts, or jointly leasing an electric vehicle.

Advantages include lower running costs and less pollution. HSTL is currently conducting a survey to find potential car sharers.

HO HO HO - Santa’s coming to the High Peak GLOSSOP Mountain Rescue Team (GMRT) plan to bring Santa, Rudolph, and his sleigh around Glossopdale’s streets as usual in December but there are changes to make it safe for everyone this year.

GMRT’s Nigel Hackney said: “We will publicise the exact routes and dates nearer to the time.

One of the main differences this year is that Santa’s elves will not knock on doors as he approaches. We’re hoping to have a tracker available via our Facebook page to enable everyone to watch Santa’s progress and know when he’s nearby. We’ll maintain social distancing so Santa’s sleigh will not stop for children to meet him individually, and sadly sweets won’t be given out.”

Nigel added: “Every year we are amazed by the kindness and generosity of Glossopdale people towards Glossop Mountain Rescue Team and would like to thank everyone. The Santa season is usually our single biggest fundraiser and as we’re not doing door-to-door collecting, we hope people will donate to us in other ways.’’

GMRT collecting tins are in local shops and venues: “We know these are difficult times for many, so we really appreciate any help.

The team are volunteers and every penny donated goes to pay for essential equipment and supplies, enabling us to help people in difficulty in the countryside around Glossop that we all enjoy. We’re looking forward to bringing Christmas smiles to everyone,” Nigel said.

Much-loved Derek’s honour MUCH-LOVED Chapel-en-le-Frith war veteran Derek Eley, who has just celebrated his 103rd birthday, has been made Honorary Freeman of the Town in recognition of his service in the war and to the community.

The award is given to exceptional individuals, and although the title is purely ceremonial today, in medieval times it granted privileges including the right to trade and own property.

This is the second honour Derek received from the town as a street was named after him in 2016, an honour normally bestowed posthumously.

Born in Matlock, Derek grew up in

Chapel in the care of three sisters, known to him as his aunties who were friends of his mothers. He left New Mills Grammar School at 16 and become a cashier at Ferodo, the brake lining manufacturer.

In May 1939, four months before the start of the war, he was one of 40 employees who volunteered to join the Territorial Army and were signed up to the 2/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters.

Having moved up from Colour Sergeant to Lance Sergeant, it was his work in psychological warfare in Italy, as part of the Intelligence Corps, that he received the British Empire Medal in 1945. The award from the King was ‘in recognition of gallant

and distinguished services in the Mediterranean theatre of war.’ Derek is modest about his role: “I don’t know why people make a fuss; it was only by a stroke of luck that I missed the heavy fighting.”

Derek has been an active member of and fundraiser for, the Chapel branch of the Royal British Legion and also served as President.

Of the award, Derek said: “I’m deeply honoured. I’ve always liked Chapel and always tried to help people.”

Good friend Helen Capel describes Derek’s philosophy on life as the secret to his longevity: “If you’re nice to people they’ll be nice to you.”

Stories to unite families GLOSSOP author Caroline England has come up with an idea that is helping to ease the pain of separation which is one of the toughest side-effects of Covid-19.

She has teamed up with South African artist Tori Stowe to create Featherbed Tales – bright digital books that record a vibrant story being read by up to four people that can be sent to anyone in the world.

Recorded via a website app through a simple guided process, the recipient can then access the book at any time and as often as they like, choosing each time who they’d like to hear reading the story.

The voice is added to the pages so they can follow along with the words and pictures, getting a bedtime story from an absent parent or grandparent, an older sibling, aunt or even a schoolfriend. In reverse, an adult can be cheered by hearing the giggles of a much-loved child learning to read, perhaps creating a Christmas present to treasure.

“Stories can be a magical way to help families stay connected when they have to be apart.” Caroline says.

Other initiatives are being planned. The group is looking at environmental projects and hope to become more involved with inter-generational work to help older and/or isolated people.

The stories have been used widely in hospitals, encouraged by Caroline’s charity project Kickstart, which raised funds for the books

to be donated to poorly children.

Electronic devices are preferred in hospitals and nursing homes now as they are easier to disinfect, and hospital staff reported that the reassurance of a familiar voice greatly reduced children’s stress levels.

Caroline, who has lived in the Peak District for over 30 years, says she is inspired to write by the landscape and beauty of the moors and dales.

“I love the amazing animals we find around us and want to share

how wonderful these, often tiny creatures are through our stories. I have seen many of these on my walks during lockdown from the scampering lizards in the heather to the tiny beetles and butterflies all around. It is a fabulous place to live and work.”

Lockdown fails to silence promising local Indie-pop band GLOSSOP vocalist Abi White and Marple bassist Joe Myers have just released a new single ‘Bright Lights’ with their indie-pop band Foxglove.

Focusing on the idea that people can be blinded to remember good times while forgetting bad times, the upbeat song has the feel-good factor in this challenging year.

Foxglove formed three years ago and is doing well despite the lockdown. Rehearsals at their Pirate Studios in Ancoats were cancelled but Abi, former Marple Hall pupil Joe, and twins Liam and Ryan Croney on drums and guitar, were determined to carry on by writing and playing individually at home.

They then visited the studio independently to record the single.

Abi, 23, said: “We write collaboratively and usually play around with words and riffs while jamming together. This hasn’t been possible this year, but we were determined to keep working so practised at home and then shared inspiration and ideas digitally.

We’re really happy with Bright Lights and already have our next single in the pipeline.”

Foxglove formed when Abi met Ryan and Liam by accident: “I was following Ryan and Liam in a former band and saw them at a gig. I’ve always enjoyed music, performing with Glossop’s Partington Players for many years, and used to have the same guitar as Ryan. I was so proud of it I posted photos of it on Instagram. Liam and Ryan got in touch as they were looking for a female vocalist. We got together and Joe joined in 2018 and we gelled creatively.”

They have been featured on BBC Introducing Manchester and performed a headline gig at Jimmy’s in Manchester before lockdown. They’re hoping to get back into the studio when they can.

Award-winning Adrian in the frame GLOSSOP photographer Adrian Lambert was one of the winners in a 2020 national photographic portraiture competition.

Adrian, who grew up and currently lives in the town, began his career straight from school in 1990 as an assistant to a commercial photographer in Manchester.

He moved to Australia in 1996 and found work as a commercial photographer before returning to Glossop in 2012 where he established his own photography business. He focuses on architecture, creative portraiture, and product photography - notably for whisky brands including Royal Salute, Aberlour, and The Glenlivet.

Earlier this year Adrian was invited to speak at the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam about an exhibition of his images made during the final year of Glossopdale Community College before it moved to a new single-site building in Hadfield.

“I’m interested in photography as an art-form. It allows us to inspect a fleeting moment indefinitely, which is really psychological but still beautiful.” he said.

Adrian also works on personal projects centred on the local area: “When the first positive COVID-19 tests were made public and people started to voluntarily self-isolate, I sought out and began making portraits of self-isolating locals in their front windows. I felt compelled to capture what was happening in a simple, non-partisan way.”

“To run the project safely and within guidelines I’d integrate it with my daily exercise, taking a small kit out on my bike. I’d talk to the sitters from the street outside on my phone and when I had the camera and light set up, I asked the sitters to consider what the pandemic meant to them. I was trying to capture an honest representation of their feelings at that moment,” Adrian said.

He submitted some of his images to the British Journal of Photography’s Portrait of Britain competition and, from thousands submitted, 100 were chosen as winners including one of Adrian’s. The images form a snapshot of what it is to be British in 2020.

“It was a photograph of a friend’s parents, Howard and Lynn, who live in Glossop. Lynn had recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and was known to go out for unannounced walks, so the image has a poignancy,” Adrian said.

Sally’s blooming marvellous collection A SMALL room on the first floor of Sally Williams’ farmhouse in Chinley is a wonder to behold.

Packed with greenery from floor to ceiling, it’s an oasis of over 200 variations of a plant that make up the UK’s largest collection of a genus known as Peperomia.

It’s the National Plant Collection of Peperomia, and award-winning gardener Sally is an expert.

Her encyclopaedic knowledge has led to medals at RHS Flower shows including Hampton Court and Tatton.

Last year she won a gold medal at the Chatsworth Flower Show on the Plant Heritage Stand, and appeared recently

on BBC Gardeners’ World.

Sally has a lifelong passion for the plants.

She said: “I started collecting them aged 12. My parents bought me one and I thought it was really cute.

“I liked the name Peperomia caperata which was a bit of a tongue twister. My father was a keen gardener and stamp collector, so I think I got my collector’s gene from him.”

“Peperomia are native to tropical regions mostly in South America where there are over 600 species in Peru and Ecuador.

“They look very different because they have adapted to many habitats – there’s the rainforest, cloud forest, very

high-altitude, and desert ones.

“You look at a rose or lily and know what it is, but Peperomia species vary hugely. They’re also very old and were around with the dinosaurs. The weather is a challenge to growing plants in the National Park, but luckily they like the temperature in an average house, so although some are more challenging they make great houseplants.

“They’re in flower for long periods but the flowers are tiny, crammed into flower spikes like mice tails,” Sally added.

“It’s important not to overwater them. Most are epiphytes – they grow on trees.

Under a tree canopy they don’t get much moisture so they have adapted to conserve water.

They like to be soaked and then dry out completely.

I let the high-altitude ones get colder during winter – down to five degrees – whereas the rainforest ones prefer a temperature of around 10 degrees.”

Sally has just completed a Master’s degree at Sheffield University on why Peperomia develop different traits, and hopes to continue her research next year.

She’ll be displaying again at the Chelsea Flower Show in May 2021.

NEW Mills Golf Club is known for being the friendliest golf club around.

This `hidden gem’, situated between the High Peak and the Cheshire Plain, is also known for its beautiful course and stunning panoramic views.

Everyone is welcome at New Mills Golf Club and in 2020 many new and returning golfers turned to the fairways to get out and about, maintain fitness and enjoy a degree of socialising.

The High Peak Review recently caught up with the club’s captain Steve Yates to get his thoughts on life at New Mills Golf Club.

Steve, who works locally, has been captain since March but because of Covid-19, his year of office has now been extended to 2022.

Captain Steve Yates Question: As club captain, do you have a chosen charity?

Answer: Yes, I am supporting the Laurel Suite cancer unit at Stepping Hill Hospital. We normally have a charity day with a golf competition and evening event but this has been postponed to 2021.

Question: With Covid-19 vaccinations on the way, can the club look forward to 2021 with events and fundraisers?

Answer: We hope to start planning for 2021 and putting events in the calendar.

Normally our lady captain also holds a charity event and we have regular competitions with other golf clubs.

Question: Does New Mills Golf Club have a signature hole?

Answer: Yes, the par three 16th hole which has extensive views over Stockport and Manchester. On a really clear day you can see as far as Wales and Snowdonia.

Visitors always comment on the panoramic views including Kinder Scout which can be seen from many of the holes.

Question: Does the club have current membership options?

Answer: During 2020 we gained 100 new members as people turned to the sport of golf, and we hope to build on this. We gave people a three month trial as an incentive.

New Mills Golf Club website www. newmillsgolfclub.co.uk currently has details of the 15 months membership for the price of 12.

Question: Does the club have many lady members and young golfers?

Answer: Yes, a lot of ladies joined the club in 2020 and we have a fantastic junior section. Our club professional Sam Shaw does a lot of work with schools and hopefully this will resume in 2021.

Question: Are there any plans to improve the golf course?

Answer: Our greenkeeper Nigel Ardern, his apprentice and a team of volunteers have done an amazing job improving drainage on the course. It used to hold an awful lot of water but this has been vastly improved.

Question: How do you find being captain of a golf club and working full-time?

Answer: Earlier in the year I was furloughed so was able to play golf and devote a lot of time to the club. I am back at work now and obviously the course has been closed during the second lockdown.

Once it re-opens, I am looking forward to playing again at weekends. I was elected captain in March 2020, just a week before the first lockdown. Everyone took the mickey out of me, saying I had only been captain for a week before the club closed.

It is a real honour to be captain. At one time golf was an elite sport but now it is welcoming to all.

Question: Despite Covid-19, has it been a successful year for the club?

Answer: Very successful.

Golf has been one of the 2020 success stories with more people than ever taking up the sport. Golf has thrived and been a great way to enjoy exercise.

The Review also caught up with club president Jeremy Unsworth, who is delighted that 2020 has been a successful year for New Mills Golf Club with its unexpected increase in membership.

Let’s hear his thoughts about 2020 and hopes for the future.

President, Jeremy Unsworth Question: As president of New Mills Golf Club, how have you found 2020?

Answer: With football and cricket not being allowed, a lot of people turned their attention

to golf and this turned the whole situation round for us with lots of new members.

Question: What are your hopes for the golf club, going forward into 2021?

Answer: Obviously to get back to more of a normal year and keep the new members interested and show them how good the social side of the club is.

Question: How do you find time to be president as well as working full-time?

Answer: Working full time and being past captain and this year’s president is hard as Steve has also found out this year.

A lot of our usual duties this year, organising things and running events have sadly not been able to happen.

It’s all about helping each other with tasks that need doing. Nigel, our green keeper, does an amazing job with

the help of a team of unpaid volunteers.

Question: Are there any plans to develop the golf club further in the coming months and years?

Answer: We have had a few grants so we are spending this on club house improvements. Now we are in a far better situation, we have a new roof and the next job is to redecorate and carpet.

Hopefully the stewards can finally start serving meals and buffets, which have been very stop start due to Government restrictions.

On the course itself, the drainage work is a credit to the work done by Nigel and the team of volunteers.

Stockport Grammar School: Inspiring academic ambition THIS Autumn, Stockport Grammar pupils have enjoyed a busy and varied school life with lessons, day trips and sporting activities all taking place while following the new Covid-safe routines.

Senior School pupils are being taught the full curriculum and pupils have been on a number of day trips to extend their learning.

Junior School children are also enjoying their normal range of lessons.

Amongst the day trips taken this term, Fourth Year Geography pupils headed to the peaceful surroundings of Edale on a field studies expedition to collect data for their GCSE course.

In Science, experiments in Biology, Chemistry and Physics are being conducted with additional care taken to clean and sanitise equipment.

IN JUST over 12 months dedicated volunteers have transformed a bare church field into a flourishing community garden and wildlife haven.

The land adjacent to Town End Methodist Church and Chapel-enle-Frith Primary School now boasts raised flower and vegetable beds, wildflower meadow, sensory garden of scented flowers and herbs, and a variety of fruit trees including apple, plum, damson and cherry trees.

A communal area for social events has been created, with plans for a beehive.

Finance came from fundraising events, and organisations including Chapel Parish Council, Town End Methodist Church, Methodist Insurance, All Churches Trust, and a Derbyshire Action Grant.

Thanks to their generosity, the communal area and paths were raised and resurfaced with a recycled, permeable rubber surface.

Project co-ordinator Mary Craner said: “The garden is fully accessible to all as the paths are suitable for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility.

“We have purchased adapted tools for people with disabilities thanks to a grant from a local councillor.”

Work on the garden stopped during the first lockdown but when restrictions eased volunteers

A LOCKDOWN photography competition has been organised by Amnesty International’s Glossop Group.

The competition theme is ‘Imagination: What 2020 meant to me’, and will raise funds for Amnesty’s work in the UK and abroad.

There are prizes of a £20 book token/voucher to winners in two age groups: Junior up to 18 years, and Senior.

Look after your spine for better all-round health

A LOCAL chiropractor is urging people to look after their spines in order to achieve all-round good health.

Dr Andrew Jackson from the Chiropractic Health Centre on Derby Way, Marple, says we all need to realise the importance of maintaining a healthy spine for good posture and alignment, along with core muscle strength.

His comments come as a timely reminder for those suffering during the coronavirus restrictions and lockdown.

During recent months Dr Jackson has been extremely busy with new patients needing his natural chiropractic care with back or neck pain, headaches, joint pain and much more.

Many have problems caused by stress and tight muscles due to lockdown issues including working at home, lack of exercise, financial worries and health concerns.

Dr Jackson said: “A healthy spine is linked to the health of the whole body.

“The spine is so important, being linked to both the brain and the gut.

“If this axis of the spine, brain and gut is working well, the body is well placed to heal and regulate.

“The spine is such a complex structure with individual vertebrae that interact with each other.

“When a spine is not working efficiently, it can be compared to having problems with a car

Gallery’s new exhibition THE WALL in the Barn Gallery, within The Craft Barn in Hadfield, features a new exhibition early next year.

The Craft Barn is an established community arts and crafts venue for adults and children.

The Wall in the Barn Gallery, launched in 2017 following a successful crowdfunding initiative, is used regularly for a range of exhibitions featuring established professional artists and gifted amateurs.

It reimagines Greek mythology from a female perspective, with often-demonised female characters and creatures explored through costume and photography against the backdrop of the beautiful Peak District.

The gallery will display photographic prints from the project alongside costumes created by Alice, a High Peak-based costume designer with a special interest in textiles.

She studied at Manchester School of Art and London College of Fashion before moving back North to explore her own art practice.

Alice is inspired by folklore, mythology and textures of the natural world and collaborating with other creatives is a key part of her process.

If Covid-19 restrictions prevent visitors from attending, the gallery will provide an online gallery and video documentation of the costume designer, photographers, and jeweller.

Ruth’s paintings hit right note with music lovers

PRESENTS are taken care of for my music-loving family. From the gnarly, characterful face of Keith Richards to elegantly dressed Leonard Cohen singing; virtually a whole wall in my parents’ house is covered in paintings of musicians captured by New Mills artist Ruth Marsden.

Ruth’s favourite subject is people.

“I’ve painted local characters and more recently a series of iconic rock stars. I often choose faces that are older and more lived in - the more wrinkles the better!”

Originally from Alton, Staffordshire, Ruth has lived in New Mills for 18 years. She’s a founder member of The Gallery, the successful local non-profit organisation run by artists and craft workers exhibiting there. “New Mills is a very vibrant and creative place; even though it’s a small town there’s such an innovative spirit and so much going on,” Ruth says.

Ruth became interested in art as a child. She studied Fine Art at Stafford College of Art and Kingston upon Thames University,

Food Bank co-ordinator Katy-Lou Evans says Helping Hands is in a healthy position to put together and deliver food parcels locally: “The support we have is amazing and we can’t thank local people enough.

We receive support from local businesses, community groups and clubs, and individuals. We currently have enough food to help all our customers.’’

Although demand is stable, KatyLou and her volunteers anticipate it will increase due to the jobs situation:

“We have plans in place if and when demand rises and feel we’re ready to meet any increase. Anyone needing support of the food bank must get in touch as we have the resources to help the vulnerable.’’

Ruth paints in acrylics saying it has an immediacy that other mediums do not possess. As well as people, she paints everyday things such as a pile of books, vegetables, cutlery, and even a fried egg inspired by her love of cooking.

Ruth’s latest painting is of David Attenborough, one of the most significant and inspiring people of the times she says. “I wanted

to capture his compassion and concern for the earth.”

She says the most exciting part of a painting’s evolution is when the first layer of colour goes on the canvas and then to observe as the painting becomes more and more saturated with colour. “I find that painting is like meditation, your mind empties of all the various dross and worries.”

Ruth’s involved in the annual Derbyshire Open Arts, having taken part since 2007: “The event is hugely important as it creates

the opportunity for artists to exhibit in their own home or studio environment, and for people to view a wide range of arts and crafts across Derbyshire outside a formal gallery situation. It is a fantastic networking platform.”

Applications for 2021 primary school places now open

PARENTS can apply to Derbyshire County Council for their child’s infant, junior or primary school place for September 2021.

Applications for children born between 1 September 2016 and 31 August 2017 close at midnight on 15 January 2021.

Parents can also apply during the same time for junior school places for children born between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2014 who are currently in Year 2 at infant school and transfer to other schools in September 2021.

Applying online is quick and

easy and allows parents to make changes to their application until the closing date. Those applying online receive an email to confirm their application has been received. Go to the school admissions section of DCC’s website at www.derbyshire.gov. uk/admissions When completing the application parents will be asked to list, in order of preference, three schools they’d most like their child to go to.

Visits and open days will not take place this year, but parents

are encouraged to look at school websites.

Calendar to bring cheer

Pick your own at bloomin’ good garden HADFIELD Community Garden has had a blooming good year, and locals are invited to ‘pick your own’ from next spring.

First cultivated just two years ago, the garden’s still largely a secret in the village, running about 100m next to a path known locally as Chapel Walk,

by Hadfield Infants School and behind Spring Bank.

Following a query from local resident Joy Hallsworth to local High Peak Borough Councillor Ed Kelly – who is currently Mayor of the High Peak – the badly overgrown strip of land was found to be unadopted, so Joy and her fellow volunteers adopted it.

Coun. Kelly organised the big clean-up – three skips were needed – and the area was cleared and rotavated.

Community garden co-ordinator Joy, Chris Nudds and other volunteers first planted fruit trees – three were funded by HPBC – including a pear, plum, cherry and apple tree, followed by fruit bushes including redcurrant, blackcurrant, strawberry, blueberry and raspberry, and a large flower bed.

The volunteers moved onto vegetables, planting potatoes, 100 cabbages, kale, onions, and chard, and recently have grown a lovely herb garden featuring chives, comfrey, mint, chocolate mint, lemon balm, rosemary, thyme, oregano, and marjoram.

And with Coun. Kelly providing a bench for people to sit and admire the view, the garden looked a real treat over the summer.

During Lockdown, rhubarb, honeyberry, butternut squash, quinine, a gooseberry bush, and another pear tree and flower bed were planted.

Joy has plans for a wildflower garden next year.

Joy told The Review: “We want people to feel it is their garden and take the produce to eat.

“The cabbages in particular have been very tasty this year. We’ll be putting notices up next year when the fruit, vegetables and herbs are in season and ready to eat.

“We want residents to take ownership of their own community garden.”

“We planted butternut squash this year and it may not bear fruit so it’s always a learning process but so enjoyable to be involved”, she added.

Joy is always on the look-out for volunteers: “If you’ve got half an hour to spare now and then to do some weeding, plant onions for next spring, or help out in any other way, please get in touch.”

‘LIGHTING up Chinley’ is going ahead to bring some Christmas cheer and light this year to the village.

Teen’s calendar captures worldwide success A CALENDAR featuring photographs of High Peak landscapes is selling all over the world for the third year running.

The calendar is the work of 19-year-old Josh Glaister from Glossop who is posting orders to India, Canada, USA and Spain.

Josh, who works at Glossop company Fast Pac and is also part of the bar staff at Old Glossop’s Howardtown Brewery, has been interested in photography since he was given a camera aged 15 and now sells prints and greeting cards of his photos.

Self-taught and learning as he goes, Josh is drawn to the hills in all seasons and weathers to ensure he gets to his chosen location, aiming to reach somewhere new or higher: “I take every opportunity to plunge into the depths of nature, no matter what the time is – either at the crack of dawn, the blue hour or well after the sun dips below the horizon. I’m often walking home in the pitch black.

“My favourite time is the morning.

I love getting up early to observe the world waking up, to watch the morning light creep over the horizon, changing the landscape and constantly developing as the seconds roll on,” he added.

Josh strives to capture his own perspective of rare and fleeting moments of nature: “I really enjoy being outdoors, and being able to capture that aesthetic moment developing in the landscape is a bonus, and only a two dimensional display of what actually happened.”

And the future? “I’m only a few years into this hobby and still young. However, I’d like to turn it more into a business over the next few years, reaching out to

more people to sell prints and appealing to local pubs, bars and restaurants.

But I’ll carry on creating my calendars which seems to have become an annual project.”

New walking leaflets available

NEW full-colour walking leaflets for Chapel-enle-Firth, Whaley Bridge and New Mills are available from December.

It’s just one of the initiatives developed

by High Peak Borough Council (HPBC) Lindsay Wetton Regeneration Officer Lindsay Wetton appointed this year to work with residents, businesses and

parish/town councils in the Whaley Bridge, Chapel-en-le-Firth and New Mills areas.

Following the Toddbrook Reservoir incident, the government supported the area and funds, via HPBC and Derbyshire County Council, have supported the initiatives. HPBC also supported each town with grant funding in conjunction with town and parish councils.

Other improvements include: • Funding towards roof work to the Transhipment Warehouse; • EV charging points in Tom Brad Croft Car Park and part-funding car park resurfacing;

• New bus stops; • Fingerpost signs, requested by businesses, will soon be installed.

Chapel-en-le-Frith launched its Shop Front Improvement Grant and funded street improvements. Whaley Bridge has had the initiative in place for a couple of years.

Lindsay told The Review: “We’ve all learnt many lessons of resilience and the importance of working as a community whilst we’re in the current pandemic.”

THE Terracycle scheme returns to Whaley Bridge in January 2021.

From Russia with care

A FASCINATING journey from Russia to Glossop has seen a life full of variety for High Peak therapist Masha Bennett.

Masha, who opened her Sand and Sound Centre in Glossop just three weeks before the lockdown in March, hails from the Russian cosmopolitan capital Moscow.

It was marriage that led her settling here but not before she had several fascinating jobs including a zookeeper at Moscow Zoo when she was young.

She went on to be a gardener, a ghost-writer, and horticultural instructor in a prison before joining the probation service.

Masha started working with people in a helping capacity 20 years ago and has since studied many forms of therapy and personal development, worked as a psychotherapist in the NHS, managed drug rehab in a women’s prison, volunteered in Sri Lanka teaching trauma therapy to trainee counsellors, taken part in research projects, and completed a MSc in Therapeutic Practice in Psychological Trauma.

GLOSSOP’S Reuben’s Retreat has been very busy since the first Lockdown.

They reacted immediately, developing a ‘stay home safe’ project to help families self-isolating with complexly ill children and those navigating grief after child loss through these difficult times.

They supported 167 families from March to September by providing 1,685 one-to-one support sessions, 278 group support sessions, and safely delivering over 500 essential care packages to families in need.

When restrictions eased, the team organised respite breaks for families to relax and recharge after a very trying time for most.

One parent supported by Reuben’s said: “The time made me realise that if you weren’t there for us, we’d be on our own.”

They introduced four initiatives to help their beneficiary families through uncertain times: ‘Rest & Restore’ – yoga and breathing techniques to help reduce stress and anxiety; ‘Dad’s club’ – a peer support group for Dads of loss; ‘Me Time’ – one-toone sessions with a skilled listener; and ‘Social Welcare’ – specialist benefits advice to ensure every family is getting the help they are entitled too.

Bellies Not Bins can help you

MORE families are using Hadfield’s Bellies Not Bins food bank, with organisers urging anyone living locally who needs help to get in touch.

A non-profit organisation, Bellies not Bins is run by volunteers and has help from local funding initiatives. The free, non-means tested service aims to give people help when they need it.

Gill Cox, chair of the Hadfield Coming Together Group, said: “We help a wide range of people from different backgrounds who need assistance with feeding themselves and their families.”

Bellies Not Bins is working every week up to Christmas and starting again on December 28: “Demand has doubled from when we had a small gathering at Carmel Church and getting around 45 requests for help. Now it has virtually doubled, and we recently gave out supplies to 81 families. Because of lockdown restrictions, we give people a collection time to pick up food parcels from the church. You need to book a slot so phone 07549 307720 or message on the Hadfield Coming Together Group or Bellies Not Bins Facebook page,” Gill added.

Individual food donations can be left at the church, and Bellies Not Bins works closely with Glossop Food Bank.

It has a good relationship with Tesco in Glossop and Hadfield which regularly donate food. Everyone who asks for help receives fresh fruit and vegetables, a fridge pack, tinned goods, bread, cakes, and cereals.

Bellies Not Bins will give out free festive lunches in the run-up to Christmas along with free breakfasts on Saturday December 12. There will also be meals for the over-60s which can be collected or delivered. Phone 07549 307720 for more information.

Cup of tea and a natter can be so important NEW venture ‘Chattercake’ is tackling social isolation in New Mills.

Hannah Hodgson, Club Development Officer at Marple Sports Club, also runs Project Community Ltd which supports community organisations to access funding and develop projects and is a local Co-operative Member Pioneer which she likens to ‘a community champion.’

Hannah’s community project role sees her working with Home Instead Senior Care High Peak (Home Instead SCHP) to tackle social isolation.

Thanks to funding from Stockport Local fund, Hannah, in her Pioneer role, met the Home Instead SCHP team. As reported in our sister paper the Marple Review, they run the Nourish Project, providing board games, jigsaws, and activities for caregivers to share with clients on home visits.

Home Instead SCHP care for over 90 people in their own homes, with many shielding or facing social isolation due to the lockdowns. “Their caregiver visits are a lifeline, offering reassurance to clients and

their families in these challenging times,” Hannah said.

Building on this, Hannah set up the Chattercake project, funded through Forever Manchester, which sees the Co-op in New Mills provide Home Instead SCHP and their clients with tea and cake on weekly companionship visits.

A challenge to overcome when setting up the project was that caregivers can’t prepare hot meals for clients.

“As family members can’t currently visit their loved ones the social isolation must be having an

impact on some people’s mental wellbeing. They are missing family birthdays, weddings,

seeing their grandchildren growing up and other social interactions we take for granted,” Hannah said.

The project’s main aim is interaction and spending time with people socially isolating in their homes. The Co-op partnership orders tea bags and pre-wrapped cakes and arranges delivery to Home Instead SCHP who distribute it via the caregiver to their clients providing an opportunity for a cup of tea and a natter.

Hannah loves her Co-op Member Pioneer role, “It’s my dream job”, and is committed to four hours work per week (but probably works longer hours). She loves working with local causes and community forum groups. “What’s crucially important to me is finding out what’s needed and to raise awareness’” she said.

Hannah is obviously passionate about her community and is an excellent facilitator for championing causes often for people who don’t have a voice or are unable to access services without help.

Community spirit comes to the fore

Spa hotel to create 140 jobs following £70million refurb BUXTON & Leek College joined forces with the Ensana Buxton Crescent Hotel to help recruit some of the first employees to work as apprentices at the world class hospitality venue.

Buxton Crescent has undergone a £70m transformation, and the five-star, 81-bedroom Thermal Spa Hotel boasts three pools including an outside rooftop pool – and several treatment areas.

Other features include a fine-dining restaurant, card room, bar, and the magnificent Georgian Assembly Rooms.

It’s reported that the finished project aims to provide 140 permanent jobs and boost the local economy by £4.5million.

Buxton & Leek College is delighted to offer its apprentices career opportunities with the hotel.

Two vacancies are advertised on the College website, one for a Level 2 Commis Chef post to ‘assist in all sections of the kitchen operation and ensure that the product provided to guests is of the highest standard.’

For anyone having difficulties with the technology or lacking a computer or Wi-Fi, the Bureau asks PCRefurb to help.

With social distancing, masks and sanitisation, the Bureau runs activities you

can join in with.

The ‘Walk and Talk’ group meets for a stroll – a well-spaced-out chance to make friends and get some exercise.

The car scheme restarted with volunteer drivers taking people to medical appointments.

The Bureau’s Towards Work programme assists those having difficulty getting into, or back, to work, by helping with CVs, interview practice and work experience, a Lifeskills programme to build up confidence, or pairing with a buddy or mentor for tailored guidance or support.

‘Community Navigation’ is key to how the Bureau operates.

It’s a one-to-one approach linking people to the support they need - from applying for benefits, helping with their garden, or going out

and about with you.

If your GP recommends fresh air and exercise, the Bureau can find you people to go a walk with, or an unpaid job outdoors.

Lauren Moore from the Bureau told The Review: “In Glossop, the first Lockdown seemed to unlock a great fund of neighbourliness which is continuing.

“Community feeling has come to the fore and residents turn out to help.

“We identify what support is needed and who would need it, and quickly organise volunteers to deliver medications, fetch groceries or link up by phone with those living on their own.

“Groups normally meeting in person adapted to phone or online contact.”

A FUNDRAISING appeal to help schools in the New Mills area has been launched.

Mark Jones, who runs the New Mills Youth and Community Project, set up a Go Fund Me page and will distribute money raised between eight schools.

He said: “Due to the pandemic, education settings in New Mills had to cancel summer fundraising activities and events.

“People would attend a school fete or take part in fundraising activities, raising much-needed funds for schools to purchase new equipment and resources.

“These events are normally important annual sources of extra funding for local schools.’’

The project is asking for donations to hit the fundraising target, with funds split between New Mills School, New Mills Primary School, New Mills Nursery School, Saint Mary’s Catholic Voluntary Academy, St George’s C of E Primary School, Thornsett Primary School, Newtown Primary School and Hague Bar Primary School.

Mark added: “The funds raised, with people’s kindness and generosity, will enable schools to purchase much-needed equipment and resources to assist

High Peak Foodbank based in Buxton and Chapel is part of local charity, The Zink Project. Zink runs employability projects and an advice service across the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales as well as Buxton Community Eco-Café During the first wave of the pandemic, High Peak Foodbank saw

a 400% increase in demand. Working with Buxton Street by Street and Chapelen-le-Frith Covid19 Mutual aid, up to 180 food parcels a week were distributed from Chapel and Buxton.

Zink’s advice worker helped families in receipt of parcels to resolve issues related to welfare, homelessness or personal budgeting.

High Peak Foodbank receives the highest honour Zink’s work coaches assisted unemployed people to take steps to find work; helping with CVs, managing health conditions, making applications etc. With IT Solutions in Buxton, Zink distributed refurbished laptops to unemployed people so that they could retrain online in lockdown, giving them better qualifications

while keeping spirits up.

Paul Bohan from Zink explained, “Having Zink’s advice and employability services attached to High Peak Foodbank means we can help resolve the issues that cause food poverty, then help clients into work, so they don’t need to rely on emergency food again”.

In October this year, Zink received The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service from Her Majesty’s representative, The Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire, Elizabeth Fothergill. The award recognises the work of voluntary groups and is the highest honour a charity can receive, equivalent to an MBE. “The volunteers, trustees and staff at

Zink were rightfully proud of this acknowledgement, particularly during this demanding time”, said Paul.

Caring charities are stronger together TWO Derbyshire charities joined forces to extend Hospice at Home services to more patients.

Blythe House Hospicecare and Helen’s Trust, based in Chapel-en-le-Frith and Bakewell respectively, launched the partnership in September.

The charities worked closely together since the first lockdown, delivering over 1,800 hours of care to patients across the Dales and North East Derbyshire in addition to people in the High Peak with lifelimiting illnesses including cancer, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and motor neurone disease.

After receiving 120 patient referrals from April to August, 75 patients died in the comfort of their own home with loved ones by their side - a 100% outcome for the patient’s preferred place of death. A survey found that 82% of people want to die at home, but 50% die in hospital. Other research found that hospices could help reduce hospital deaths by 50,000 every year, generating £80m savings for the NHS. Tim Mourne, chairman of the Blythe House Hospicecare board of trustees, said: “Over the last year, it became more apparent that Blythe House and Helen’s Trust would

be stronger together, ensuring better value from joint resources, and most importantly, reaching more local people who need us.

I’m delighted that Janet Dunphy, chief executive at Blythe House Hospicecare, will manage both charities, following the retirement of the former Helen’s Trust CEO, and she’ll lead the merged organisation. The board of trustees at both charities merged to support the new partnership and its future development, bringing together local industry professionals with a wealth of knowledge and skills.”

Janet, who has over 35 years’ experience as an end of life care specialist,

said: “I’m delighted to have the opportunity to oversee this incredibly exciting partnership, to ensure that everyone in our local community can receive the best Hospice at Home care.”

Launched in 2016, the Hospice at Home service has delivered over 50,000 hours of day and nighttime care in the comfort of patient’s homes across the High Peak.

Lake of Lights 2020 Remember your loved ones.

THE festive season can be especially difficult for those who are coping with a loss. The Thomas Theyer Foundation Lake of Lights is an event open to all who have lost someone and would like to remember that person by dedicating a light to them.

This has been a particularly tough year for lots of people and it has been a year marked with great loss. Unfortunately, due to the current pandemic the charity is unable to hold an event with people congregating at the same time. This has not stopped the charity though in wanting to still provide the opportunity for the community to remember their loved ones.

The Thomas Theyer Foundation will be lighting the band stand and a tree next to it on the main promenade in the Pavilion Gardens, Buxton, Derbyshire. The lights will be switched on by Thomas’ mum Chris on the 5th December where she will tie a yellow ribbon in memory of Thomas.

The Foundation hopes that this will give people an opportunity to remember peacefully and privately as the tree and bandstand will be lit up throughout December to early January. We want people to go in their own time to have their own special moment, be it private or with family members, to remember those we love so dearly.

In doing so, we hope people know they are not alone in their pain and it is okay to show your grief, regardless of the time of year.

Rugby club’s celebrations on hold GLOSSOP Rugby Club’s 50th anniversary celebrations are on hold due to the pandemic.

A celebratory gala dinner in May was postponed but club president Peter Thompson hopes that the celebrations can go ahead within the 2020/2021 season.

He said: “Everyone was disappointed of course particularly as we were having such a great season on the pitch with our first and second teams doing so well to get promoted.

“Our junior and mini teams are also going from strength to strength. The senior teams were due to start playing last September in their newly promoted positions, but this is on hold.

“According to the latest information, there may be some

form of competitive rugby towards the end of January.”

During the summer the club used the outside patio area with social distancing which helped morale: “One of our members Neil ‘Sash’ Symons raised much-needed funds with a crowd funding project when he allocated 400 squares of the pitch for £10 each.

“A recent golf day at New Mills Golf Club raised £1,301 for club funds,” Peter added.

The golf day – generously sponsored by Jeremy Unsworth Funeral Services Glossop – was organised by Jan Kenworthy, GRUFC fundraising and sponsorship secretary, Pete Abbot, former GRUFC member and 1XV player, New Mills golf professional Sam Shaw and Jeremy Unsworth.

Nineteen teams took part in a four-ball Texas Scramble event operating a multi-tee start to allow for Covid-19 restrictions and social distancing.

After the event, everyone met, socially distanced, outside to enjoy the prize giving and hot supper.

Peter said: “We had a really good turn out with mixed teams of four.

“It was a very successful day, and the weather was kind to us.

It was very well supported by our members who are also keen golfers.’’

Jeremy Unsworth was delighted with the event: “Hopefully we’re going to make it a regular event because everyone enjoyed it so much, perhaps even hold it three times a year.

“It was a good fundraiser for the

rugby club.’’

The club has always played a big role in the local community, welcoming families and hosting community events.

Pride and Joy’s Jane goes above and beyond CHINLEY businesswoman Jane Phillips has won a major transport and logistics award.

Jane won an ‘Above and Beyond’ award in the supply chain management category in the Amazon everywoman in Transport & Logistics Awards.

And instead of travelling to London’s Grosvenor House for the ceremony, Jane took part in a live stream in her own living room.

Jane is managing director of Pride and Joy clothing which specialises in designing and branding uniforms for the bus and coach industry.

The awards recognise female leadership, demonstrating progression and accomplishment in what is a male-dominated sector.

Jane said: “I’ve been in the transport industry for nearly 20 years and it took some time to gain respect in a predominantly male environment.

“I’ve met many women who face the same barriers and go unrecognised.

“Women have an important role to play in our industry, especially in these challenging times where we need greater diversity, a different kind of leadership and skill set.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d go from a 16-year old bank clerk to running my own business and being part of the celebration of women in transport and logistics.”

In 2001, Jane, then aged 30, established Pride and Joy in Buxton – her home town.

The company expanded and now employs five staff at its Chesterfield base.

“There was sexism in my early days working for a high street bank in an era of old-fashioned managers,” she added.

“I work with more women at my level now and many are my friends as we’re mirror images.

“You have to be strong, determined, and professional to gain respect.

“We now have a 50 per cent mix of male and female at admin/ operations manager level.

“I always keep things professional, make it my business to be informed, and never give my business card out until the end of meetings when sometimes people realise that they’ve just had a brew with the boss.”

Pride and Joy closed during lockdown, but Jane used her skills and local networks to set up a volunteer sewing army to create more than 1,500 PPE items for care home workers, police forces and hospital staff.

“My dad lives in a Glossop care home, so I knew early on the challenges the care home manager was facing in getting hold of PPE,” Jane added.

“I’d heard of volunteers doing it for hospital staff, so I thought ‘I’ve got fabric at work’ and got started.

“Word got out and before long it had grown into a cottage industry.”

Pride and Joy has reopened part-time, but as the coach

industry remains in difficulty, Jane is preparing for a challenging time ahead.

Virtual quiz raises spirits and cash A WEEKLY pub quiz from ‘Visit New Mills’ has just passed the landmark of six months in a virtual format. Since lockdown, Quizit New Mills has built an online community with over twenty teams regularly taking part on a Thursday night.

Locals, alongside quizzers in the likes of Northern Ireland, the United Arab Emirates and Croydon, have had their brains teased with enjoyable questions set by a dedicated team of hosts, live streaming from their homes in the High Peak town.

Although the quiz is free to play, generous participants have so far donated over £500 via Paypal, which will be split between local causes when the quiz returns to venues next year – add to this the incredible sum of £35,000 raised since Quizit started 5 years ago.

Actor Tony Audenshaw, who helped work on the format of the quiz, explains “We wanted to keep the feel of the pub quiz whilst adapting to the challenges of delivering online. The questions are typed as well as spoken for example and we’ve established a Video Round which has been well received by the regulars.

Teams in separate houses can watch the Facebook feed and communicate with each other by text, there’s a bit of banter and it’s a nice way to stay in touch.”

Michael’s fairy garden WHEN author Michael Ross created a fairy garden this summer on the grass verge outside his New Mills home, he never realised how popular it would become.

It started with a ring of pebbles and grew to include fairies, flowers, rabbits and toadstools, and was illuminated at night.

People visited the magical kingdom, above the town on High Lea Road, and its fame spread far and wide but Derbyshire County Council said it had to removed, as it could be dangerous for children stopping on the road with no pavement on that side.

Michael is now rebuilding it in his front garden, promising a bigger and better garden: “I had letters of support, including from a six-year-old girl who told me how she loved visiting it, and a lady in New Zealand sent me a Maori figure for my new garden which opens in January. I’m planning a grand opening, with fairy cakes to celebrate.”

A DCC spokesperson said: “There was no doubt the fairy garden was created for the enjoyment of locals and children in particular. We were contacted by a member of public concerned that anybody wanting to take a closer look could be standing in the road and children, who might not look out for cars, may run across the road or stand in the road to have a better look.

For safety reasons we asked for it to be moved. Hopefully the new garden will be in a far safer location and bring a bit of magic to be enjoyed by local people.”

Michael, an actor and model, started writing after the murder of his wife Jacquie in 2005 when he penned the true story in ‘Just Five More Minutes.’ He found great comfort in writing and penned 14 books in a wide range of genres, from starting school for young children, to books for young adults. His favourite genre is epic fantasy, and he’s becoming

known worldwide, particularly America, for the Big Fairy Adventures and also his series featuring fairies, elves and humans, The Wand Chronicles.

“I write for a few hours every day and I am a writer who doesn’t really have a plan. I come up with characters and ideas, then let the words flow. I have a huge map in my writing room and let my imagination run wild. I inhabit the characters, probably from my time as a method actor, and hours go

by as I get the words down.

“My illustrator, based in Croatia, creates wonderful images, and we produced the book about starting school together with versions in English and Croatian, and we are working on another idea,” Michael added.

Following the success of September’s Light up New Mills, which saw almost 350 stunning window and light displays around the town, New Mills Festival and Visit New Mills have joined forces to co-ordinate another festive light show.

IN SPRING of this year Visit New Mills were ready with dozens of volunteers to plant 500 native species trees in the Mousley Bottom nature reserve in New Mills – the week before planting was scheduled the Covid pandemic started

to take hold and what would have been an enjoyable community planting day turned into a handful of socially distanced volunteers spending many hours to ensure the trees were planted on time.

Following on from

that success Visit New Mills are about to receive another 500 native species trees from the Woodland Trust, and would you believe it we have once again entered a lockdown and looking at another challenging planting session.

This time the planting will take place in a different area of Mousley Bottom as well as an unplanted area in Brookbottom that will benefit from hundreds of sessile and pedunculated oak, downy birch, rowan, alder and hazel.

planting session every year and even better if it is a previously unplanted area. The work doesn’t stop there though as the newly planted trees need inspecting regularly as the planting areas have many rabbits that are very fond of saplings” There will be more information on the website as the plan progresses over the coming days.

Magnificent Mam Tor

On the border of the gritstone edge of the Dark Peak and the limestone plateaux of the White Peak, next to the dramatic limestone gorge of Winnat’s Pass, lies the dome-shaped slope of Mam Tor. This 517-metre-high peak is one of the most distinct and iconic landmarks of the Peak District.

The name Mam Tor or ‘Mother Hill’ is said to be owed to frequent landslips on its eastern face. The unique landscape of unstable shale and gritstone layers led to locals renaming it the ‘Shivering Mountain.’

The natural splendour of this

totemic beauty spot is a very popular attraction. A stone path leads from a road near the foot of the mountain to the summit where walkers are rewarded with one of the Peak District’s most spectacular views.

Below are the verdant landscapes of the Edale and Hope valleys and, on a clear day, the distinct plateau of Kinder Scout and rugged Derwent Moors are visible.

With scenery this magnificent, Mam Tor remains one of the most popular photography locations in the Peak District.

The summit is flanked by two well-preserved ancient forts providing evidence of occupation from around 1200BC

along the exhilarating Great Ridge separating the Edale and Castleton valleys - extending for several kilometres to Lose Hill.

Along with hikers are hang gliders and paragliders circling the mountain. Mam Tor is a major local centre for both pursuits and in the right conditions, pilots flock to grassy take-off areas on Mam Tor’s summit to soar above the peak.

History enthusiasts can learn about the ancient civilisation that once occupied the site. The summit is flanked by two wellpreserved ancient forts providing evidence of occupation from around 1200BC. One hill fort

dates from the late Bronze Age and the other from the early Iron Age. Excavations showed that timber houses were built on flat level platforms on the hillsides near the summit, part of an Iron Age village. As well as being one of the UK’s earliest hill forts, Mam Tor’s ‘ancient village’ is one of the largest encompassing a vast area of around 16 acres.

A good time to appreciate its unique beauty and history is to visit it at sunrise when the sun rises above the mist drifting over the valley soaking the Great Ridge in crimson light.

Climbers turn to Peak District for Covid uplift

Since the late 19th century when it became a recreational activity, rock climbing has provided a sense of freedom and adventure.

During the restrictions of the pandemic, the liberating euphoria of climbing is more pertinent than ever.

The Peak District boasts many of the UK’s finest gritstone crags and has long been a rock-climbing mecca. In the 1950s and 60s, legendary pioneers and climbing partners Joe Brown and Don Whillans were drawn to the craggy ridges, and established several new routes including the hardest grades. These routes have stood the test of time with climbers travelling long distances to take on the climbs.

A renowned site is Windgather Rocks, a gritstone escarpment that lies above Taxal Edge at Whaley Bridge. The crag, exposed to prevailing westerly winds, attracts climbers of all ages and abilities who choose from over 90 recognised routes. As the routes are no more than 9m high, it’s popular with beginners.

A quieter spot is Castle Naze - Windgather’s ‘big brother’ because of its taller, steeper routes. The west-facing gritstone crag is the site of a prehistoric hillfort above Combs village near Chapel-en-le-Frith.

For over a century, climbers have been attracted to its routes which follow steep cracks and grooves requiring some technique and gritstone experience.

The most iconic rock-climbing destination is the internationally renowned Stanage Edge, a long, curled lip of gritstone overlooking the Hope Valley. Climbs date back to 1890. The 1,300-plus routes range from moderate to an exceptionally severe Grade 8. The windswept stretch of gritstone attracts enthusiastic rock climbers throughout the year including the winter months.

Ardent rock climber Jamie Nash lives in Cheshire but travels to the Peak District for his fix. He told The Review: “I love the variety in the Peak District. Stanage is up there with the best and it’s incredible how many classic climbs are packed into one cliff.

Gritstone is amazing to climb on, especially in winter when it’s colder. With gyms and climbing centres closed in lockdown, it’s great to have the option to go to the Peak District to climb.”

Jamie’s enthusiasm echoes that of Joe Brown who was 16 when he ventured into the Peak District from his home in Ardwick, Manchester. Brown became hooked after he and his friends scaled the rocks of Kinder Downfall with an old, coiled rope.

Not everyone is brave enough to tackle the mighty Downfall but with over 10,000 routes accessible in the Peak District, there’s a climb for everyone.

The High Peak Borough Council Park is one of a recordbreaking 2,000+ UK parks and green spaces to receive the prestigious award - a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.

ACCLIMATISE Whaley has set up a new Travel and Transport Group and would welcome anyone who would like to join.

Its aim is to make Whaley safer, cleaner and greener - a safe place for walking and cycling, with less air pollution from traffic fumes and an end to gridlock.

The group’s Lorrie Marchington said: ‘Working with Whaley Active we aim to make it easier to get around without a car, and will draw up guides to local routes for walkers and cyclists. We’ll discuss how these could link into a wider network of routes across the High Peak.

It would be great if Whaley became a cycle hub. We have secured cycle stands for the town and are negotiating with Network Rail, Northern and community

partners for secure stands or lockers at Whaley Bridge Station.’ The group plans to work with schools to encourage children to get to school by foot, bike or scooter.

They’re looking into micro car-sharing schemes and lobbying for more electric vehicle charge points.

Discussion topics include how to go green with electric cars and e-bikes, and why people do or don’t want to use public transport across the region.

BUXTON & Leek College student Gill Ashton is a ‘High Peak Hero’ for “going above and beyond� to help people during the pandemic.

Gill, a Level 3 Beauty & Spa Therapy student, was nominated by Hair & Beauty Salon Manager Amanda Garrington who told The Review: “Gill really deserves this award; she does a lot for others and has taken a very active part in many fundraising opportunities within our salons.�

Robert Largan, who organises High Peak Heroes, confirmed Gill’s Award in a letter to Amanda: “The current crisis is difficult for so many reasons but overwhelmingly I have seen it bring out the best in the people of the High Peak. I launched the High Peak Heroes Award to provide greater recognition for those local people who have gone above and beyond to help others. “I received a huge number of nominations and it has been wonderful to learn about the efforts of some truly

extraordinary local people. That includes Gill and the work she has done, through the Whaley Bridge Business Information and Support Group, in supporting the vulnerable to access essential services they need. Through the countless messages of support I received, I know just how much Gill has done for the people of Whaley Bridge and beyond.�

Iconic canal boat stays afloat THE restaurant boat Judith Mary II is to open for business again in 2021 which is great news for Whaley Bridge residents and visitors.

The boat is run by owner Allen Kelsall and his daughter Suzy who told The Review: “In September we thought Covid-19 had defeated us. Bookings had to stop in March because of the safety restrictions as it would be impossible to have people socially distanced either on board or on coaches bringing them here. We thought we would have to sell the boat, because without income from bookings we couldn’t pay for mooring rights or upkeep.�

News about a vaccine revived their hopes: “We feel that if we can keep going for the next few months there’s every chance we can start

sailing again in the spring. We want to keep the Judith Mary afloat,� Suzy added.

Everyone will be delighted to see the big burgundy-and-cream-painted canal boat decked out to welcome guests and gliding along the waterway - it’s been an iconic part of Whaley Bridge for 38 years.

Chef Allen started working on the first Judith Mary in 1982. Six years later he took over from owner Roger Sharp and commissioned a second boat to develop the business.

Assembled on Bingswood Industrial Estate, Judith Mary II was purpose-built as a restaurant boat specifically for the Peak Forest Canal. Fitted with a galley and licensed bar, it caters for parties of up to 40 and at 71½ft long and 6’10� wide, it slides neatly through the narrowest sections of the canal and is able to turn round in the wider bays.

Suzy joined Allen in 2010: “We adjusted the service to what people wanted. Rather than pick from an extensive menu, most chose either a cream tea or hotpot dinner, depending on the season.

The coach companies took to the idea, and we built up a network to serve day trippers from a wide area. People returned year after year.�

Defibrillators in Furness Vale THE current survival rate for a sudden cardiac arrest in England is about 8.6% which is far lower than many other European countries (e.g. Norway – 25%).

With knowledge of how to undertake cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and how to use a defibrillator, our community has the opportunity to improve on that. Following local initiatives there are now two defibrillators in the village.

The first, located on the outside of the Crossings public house on Station Road, was provided by Cardiac Services with

generous donations from Tramar Services Limited (part of Xylem Water Solutions Limited) and Jeremy Unsworth Funeral Directors, in addition to donations from the community.

At the same time, Whaley Bridge Town Council had agreed to fund a defibrillator through the Community Heartbeat Trust which is located on the side wall of the Furness Vale Social Club. Both of these have been installed by Paul Allen who has generously declined to charge for his services.

The two devices are

almost in sight of each other across the A6. Ideally the preferred location for the second one would be further up Yeardsley Lane but, especially as there is no longer a telephone box up there, there is no obvious alternative site. It is to be hoped that when the COGS pavilion is up and running there will ultimately be another defibrillator available there.

With both of these defibrillators, there is usually resuscitation training provided as they are installed but, in view of the Covid pandemic, this has had to be deferred. Although

The two-hour there-and-back cruise to New Mills was the right length to have a meal, relax and take in the scenery. “There’s something about being on the water with its wildlife and greenery that makes you feel you’re in a different world,� Suzy said.

Ian’s Whaley Bridge Christmas Shows CHRISTMAS shows for children are taking place at the Transhipment Warehouse in Whaley Bridge.

Organised by Whaley Bridge Canal Group CIC - and with final details being finalised as The Review went to press - the shows feature well-known storyteller and theatre maker Ian Douglas.

With over 20 years’ experience delivering storytelling, performance and theatre activities for schools, arts organisations, communities and festivals across Britain, Ian’s unique style mixes sensitivity,

comedic energy, and great wit.

His Whaley Bridge shows will be fully interactive storytelling featuring shadow puppets.

To accommodate bubbles and be Covid-19 secure, the sessions are expected to be in one-hour slots with up to six families at a time, spread over the evenings during the week commencing Monday December 14th. There will be a small cost per child of around ÂŁ5.
