The RTAM Photo Contest: A History

Joan Dawson, Member, RTAM Board of Directors

The Photo Contest was first introduced in the Spring KIT 2016. The contest was initiated by Doreen Sage (KIT editor) to encourage member involvement in KIT and possibly to create a library of photos that could be used in KIT.

A subcommittee of the KIT committee has responsibility for the management of the Photo Contest. There have been two contests a year since then with varying levels of success. One contest is announced as the Winter Contest and the other one is the Summer Contest. They have had 2 categories with a first and second place being awarded in each category. First place winners receive $25 and second place winners receive $15. The committee is adding a new award category of Overall Winner with a prize of $40.

Contest participation has varied over the years. The 2020 Summer Photo Contest received 115 entries, the largest participation so far. Our judge, Gayl Punzalan, has noticed that the quality of the photo entries has been improving with every contest. The photos in the latest contest were extremely difficult to judge due to the many wonderful photos sent in. She is very impressed and is looking forward to the next contest where our themes will be Snow and Christmas.

She says that the snow category will be challenging as it is difficult to get the right lighting to show off the many shades that snow can be and to get the contrast just right. This could be a picture of snow on items, snow falling, snow at any time of the day or night or whatever you like as long as it’s snow.

One of the highlights of winter is Christmas. All the reds and greens are a breath of fresh air during this gloomy season. Gayl challenges us to take photos of the things we love about Christmas. This can be your favourite seasonal beverage or food, your decorating skills, a childhood memory, etc.

One of the challenges of the twice yearly contest is the choosing of new and different themes. We are asking for help from all of you with this. Please send in your ideas for themes that you would like us to feature. Your suggestions will be compiled into a list that we can select from for future contests. Please send in your ideas to info@rtam.mb.ca under the heading of Photo Contest Suggestions.

We are looking forward to seeing your wonderful photos and reading about your great ideas for new themes for future contests.
