WELCOME A very warm welcome to the 11th VM & Display Awards — the only dedicated UK event that recognises and celebrates this highly innovative and talented industry.

We are pleased to celebrate this year’s awards at our new venue, The Bloomsbury Big Top in London, with comedian and novelist Julian Clary as the evening’s host.

Over the last 11 years, the VM & Display Awards have strived to highlight the skills and commitment of those professionals working to promote the image, products and services of retailers and brands, and to attract and inspire customers.

For the first time we have collaborated with Retail Focus magazine to introduce a new category that allows the industry to vote for its favourite window scheme. Window displays featured in Retail Focus magazine from September 2014 August 2015 were whittled down to just 15 by a group of industry experts before being put to the public vote.

A big thank you to our panel of judges and award sponsors, without whom this event would not be possible.

foreword KARL MCKEEVER RETAIL FOCUS COLUMNIST, TV PERSONALITY AND BRAND DIRECTOR OF VISUAL THINKING Once again, we come together to celebrate retail success and personal achievements made possible thanks to the outstanding talent in our industry.

Every year, we recognise those individuals who display the ability, commitment and professionalism necessary to deliver excellence in store, while conquering the many and varied challenges that exist in the modern retail environment.

But on a night like this, I believe that it’s also important for us to celebrate the contribution that VM expertise in the UK continues to make on the global stage.

The knowledge and skills of VM experts here in the UK is highly valued and much sought-after by retailers around the world – and rightly so. Not only have many groundbreaking ideas first taken root in this country, Britain also continues to export many VM specialists overseas – whether flying in external retail specialists from the other side of the world, or recruiting UK nationals to take up key internal roles and steer VM development.

Having represented UK best practice thinking internationally for almost 23 years with my agency Visual Thinking, I’ve been fortunate enough to work with clients in every world market and witness first hand just

how much respect there is for UK approaches to visual merchandising and display.

VM and display best practice originated and honed here in the UK has not only been a cornerstone of British retail success for decades, but also continues to provide a firm foundation on which retailers in other established and emerging markets can build their own futures. And on tonight, of all nights, that cannot be allowed to pass without a mention.

So, as we gather here in London, pause for a moment to reflect on the many talented individuals, whose careers started out in the UK, or that have been influenced by VM in this country, who will be hard at work tonight to engage and inspire customers in countries around the world.

The VM & Display Awards are not just an acknowledgement of the outstanding talent in this room, but a barometer for the innovative thinking that will help secure the transformation of the shopping experience and a positive future for the high street, far beyond our own shores. Hopefully they’ll also inspire a new generation of VM talent too, so that the UK can maintain its status as the home of VM best practice.
