LATELY most retailers have been reporting spurts of sales with no rhyme or reason. The economy continues to send mixed messages. We are told we have low unemployment rates and wages are up but then we deal with inflation, which hopefully will start on the downturn. Consumer confidence has been bouncing up and down and many retailers see their profits bouncing along with those numbers.HEREis what we know. We are seeing more people than ever opening their own businesses than ever before. There has been a resurgence of entrepreneurism that had been stifled by the past ill-advised covid lock-downs. Many new local stores have been opening and there is a big increase in new online businesses as well. This is all great news for our industry.

ON a closing note, I am sure most of our industry is aware that our formidable competitor had recently ceased print publication of Independent Retailer and American Merchandiser. They were an asset to our industry and our two magazines, Retailers Forum and Swap Meet Magazine welcome their readers and advertisers where we will continue servicing our industry, now as the lone monthly magazine and voice of retailing and flea marketing.

THE back-to-school season is now well underway and the industry is expected to generate almost $37B for this year’s sales. That number is very close to last years and shows an average spend of around $864 for each family.HOPEFULLY your business will benefit by this season that is the start of the busiest times to come for our businesses. If you were with us last issue you got on the gravy train by planning ahead and profiting from those plans.WHILE the bulk of back-to-school sales have been done, or are winding up now, there is still a great deal of residual sales to be made. Once students start class, they will be making lists of additional items that they need. Additionally, as college students settle into their dorm room, they will realize that having an extra pillow or set of sheets isn’t such a bad idea after all. ACCORDING to reports around 25% of consumers worldwide say that they are “not very” or “not at all” financially secure, and over 67% say inflation continues to have a moderate or dramatic impact on them.

THERE has been a dramatic increase in the number of consumers flocking to off price retailers like Nordstrom Rack, TJ Maxx and Ross Stores in a bid to look chic on a budget. And while large ticket items like housewares and furniture are trending down, the growth for travel gear and cosmetic treatments show that there is still an appetite for the right type of splurging.

THERE is a reverse trend to the carefree spending seen back at this point last year in the United States. Thriftiness is back, while optimism and daringness is down.

WITH thriftiness back in consumers’ minds, marketers must focus more on the message. In light of increased price sensitivity, marketers can try to position their products as “affordable luxuries.” While consumers may be cutting back on the amount they spend on treats, they still want to reward themselves.

HALF of consumers say they plan to be more energy efficient. The data identified a rise in “eco friendly” intentions, with 44% of consumers planning to walk or cycle more, and 38% planning to reuse more products, just 10% plan on buying second hand clothing.

WE think you will see many of the larger retailers focusing on value propositions for their shoppers and adding more discounted and value pricing. Smaller retailers should take note and get a head start on restructuring their pricing and offerings.

LARGE home and house retailer Bed Bath & Beyond continues to try to turn their company’s sales and numbers around after quite a struggle recently. It appears that some of their tactics and working and sales have been increasing overall. The company also has brought in many new brands and started remodeling many of their stores. I think the remodel was a great idea as the units were confusing and hard to navigate.

WITH the economy looking very confused, recession, not recession, depression, transitory issues, the average consumer just feels the pinch and a trend is showing that shoppers have become more thrifty these days. And what that means for retailers is that they must change their marketing strategies and price points to accommodate them.

IT’S more likely that this shift is being driven by the need to conserve cash, rather than the desire to save the planet, but it drives sustainability changes nonetheless.

THE company has to navigate through past losses and the road to profitability will be a tough one as they have an estimated net loss in the area of $51M. Their stock is a bit volatile as day traders seem to push and pull at its value, but there is great hope that BBB as a company will weather the storm and once again gain its place as a leader in home and house. The company estimates that by next year they will gain over 30% of their sales from private-label, which is a very profitable way to change out sales. Vicino planned to surprise the Monday morning New York commuters, but all was not well with the gorilla of his dreams. A building bolt tore an 18 inch gash in Kong’s vinyl as inflation began in the predawn hours. What then would have been an interesting promotion turned into a week-long international media event as Vicino’s workers valiantly tried to turn a sagging piece of plastic into the menacing ape of movie lore. In countless interviews they said that they knew the kids of New York City were counting on seeing King Kong on top of the Empire State Building, and they would not quit until they came through for the kids. Kong was fully in flated in time for a crush of photo snapping tourists that Saturday and Sunday. Vicino and Helmsley wanted Kong to remain for another week, but the police and mayor couldn’t take another day of gridlock. Kong was moved to the great lawn of Central Park, a historic first for a commercial venture. If the situation is ugly, get professional public relations help. Again, it is essential that the organization avoid the appearance of dodging media requests If at all possible, maintain a log of media in quiries. This ensures that all requests for information are honored and provides a valuable record for later evaluation of and monitoring of the event’s effects. 5. Never speculate. Guesswork can mistakenly be reported as fact, leading to misconceptions that are difficult to counter. Succeeding in Planned Media Interviews We have described how to write a news release, but here are a few more tips that will keep those precious relationships with your media con tacts intact. 1.
