Shake Up In The Kids Marketplace
THERE is a great deal of news in the children’s marketplace this past month. Children’s clothing retailer Gymboree is selling its brand to The Childen’s Place and its Janie and Jack line to Gap Inc. THE Children’s Place is set to pay $76 million for the rights to Gymboree and the Crazy 8 brand, and assume a contract with Zeavion Holding which acquired Gymboree;s Play & Music business back in 2016, according to bankruptcy court proceedings. A rival of Gymboree, the Children’s Place has almost 1000 stores throughout the USA, Canada and Puerto Rico. This acquisition will squash the rivalry and change the playing field. GAP is going to pay $38 million for the high-end children’s fashion line Janie & Jack and its online business and leases to its stores in addition to other business assets including customer files based on bankruptcy filings. THE San Francisco based Gymboree filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy stating it would close about 800 Gymboree and Crazy 8 stores in the USA and Canada. When they filed they had planned on running the Janie & Jack line and its Gymboree online platform. BUT things change and getting Gap to pay $38 million seems like a great prospect for the company to pursue. THIS deal comes close to Gap’s announcement that it would spin off Old Navy into its own company and close about 230, or half of its Gap stores over the next couple of years. AND so it goes. Less selection for consumers and more vacant stores at shopping centers. Who’s the winner in this round?
Stores Capitalizing on Pet Owners
PETS are the most influential when it comes to getting control of the larger parts of the household budget. These furry friends may not speak but they sure know how to motivate their owners to spend on them! A survey that was done after this year’s Valentines Day sales showed that shoppers increased their Valentine’s Day pet spending more than 27% over 2018. One in five consumers said they were buying something for their pet, translating to a total of $886 million in sales for the holiday. VALENTINE’S Day is just one isolated measure of how much consumers are spending to indulge their pets using their wallets. Americans are estimated to have spent over $72 Billion on their pets in 2018, as compared with $43 Billion a mere ten years earlier. And this doesn’t stop as these same pet owners would not buy a house if it did not meet the needs of their pets. THIS pet clout is likely to grow as pets become more widely accepted as members of the family and replacements for human children, The pets are integral to their owners lifestyles. Ranging from nutrition specific foods to dog cams to app-conncted feeding bowls and more, pet products are fueling an industry that is now three times greater than the children’s toy industry. SALES in this category continue to increase with the number of pet owning households exceeding those with childen - 84.6 million vs 52.8 million. Most retailers have been jumping on the pet bandwagon including Saks Fifth Avenue that sells “smart” pet bowls that monitor consumption, sneakers for your pets, expensive dog toys and supplies, and of course clothing. From the high end at Saks to Home Depot the pet industry is where the money is. Make sure that your store has a section for pets so you do not miss out on the money train.

Don’t Turn Off the Engine Just Because You’re Off the Ground Even when you have loyal advocates working for you and ads pulling for you, advertising your business can’t stop. When a young reporter asked William Wrigley during the heyday of his chewing gum empire why he continued to do so much advertising, the magnate responded, “Just because we’re in the air doesn’t mean we’re going to shut off the engine.” But how do you know how much to invest in advertising? First, it must be large enough to achieve the desired objective, according to Augustino Turner who wrote “Cost-Effective Advertising” for the May 1989, Small Business Reports. Here are some of the guidelines that Turner set up. 1.HISTORICAL METHOD. Based on projected sales, this method increases or decreases the previous year’s budget by a given percentage or dollar amount. 2. FIXED-SUM METHOD. Determine how much to spend based on a certain amount for each product sold. If you allocated 50¢ for each unit, and you plan to sell 200,000, the ad budget would be $10,000.
when the product is a large-ticket item (profit margin of 25 to 50%.) Allocate no less than 3 to 6% of sales for commercial or industrial products. 4. AFFORDABLE METHOD. The ad budget equals the funds remaining after all other expenses are budgeted. 5. COMPETITIVE METHOD. Firms using this tactic try to match or outspend their competitors. 6. PROFIT MARGIN METHOD. Multiply projected sales by the company’s gross margin percentage. Multiply that by the average advertising-to-gross-profit ratio in the industry. 7. SALES FORCE-TO-ADVERTISING METHOD. This is based on the cost of maintaining a sales force in relation to the amount of sales it generates. If the company spends $20,000 on a sales force to generate 80% of its business, it should be willing to spend an additional $50,000 on advertising to generate 20% of sales. Turner cautions businesses to realize these are parameters for setting a budget. They should be balanced with the desired results for the ad program.

Advertising Tricks & Tactics 1. Don’t play the saturation game like the big guys do; use the sharpshooter approach and concentrate on those media with the highest concentration of your target audience. 2. Use advertising, not publicity, when you must control the message and timing. 3. If you have a service in which Yellow Pages and classified ads are appropriate, place the bulk of your advertising dollars there. 4. Your ad must convey that you are the best. 5. Hire freelancers who once worked for the big agencies to be on your creative team.
7. Write an advertorial – which uses the art of storytelling – to let readers see how your product can improve their lives. 8. Don’t make customers work to get in touch with you. 9. Spread the word by disciplining advocates who will sell your product for you. 10. Determine an advertising budget that is in balance with your desired results for the ad program.

forumworkshop FORUM WORKSHOP “The idea behind planning is to clarify objectives for yourself, and it obviously involves others who have to buy into the plan, and need to see the big picture,” says Fred Pryor, CEO of Pryor Resources, Inc., in Kansas City, Missouri, and founder of Fred Pryor Seminars. “When you plan with others, you will be able to get perspective on important issues that were in your blind spot. They serve as objective consultants who will force you to answer tough questions about what you have in mind. They can help you determine if your thinking is clear and scrutinize your plan of action.” Pryor says that no matter how long your plan – one year, five years, or ten years – it’s essential to be flexible. “Long-range goals can be vague, but the closer they get – say within a year or two – the more refined they must be,” says
Pryor. “Investing too much time to design a plan for more than a few years away from the present moment isn’t wise. Too much is subject to change. But being very specific about what you plan to do this month and in 6 months is essential.” By specific, Pryor even means including details such as seminars you plan to attend, books you want to read, and new degrees you want to pursue. “Allocating time to personal growth and development is essential,” he says. continued...

What are its demographics and psychographics – including age, sex, lifestyle, media usage, and political affiliation? What is the relationship between the public and the organization/program? Unfortunately, this is where many people start their planning. But you really cant’ determine the action until you have conducted initial search, identified the problem, analyzed the situation, and determined quantifiable goals and objectives. This is where you designate the specific steps you will take to meet each objective, such as local, national, or trade journal media relations; speaker’s bureau campaign; or direct mail campaign. You will also identify what you will have to produce – news releases, brochures, flyers, newsletters, direct mail pieces, etc.
Don’t Forget to Evaluate Evaluation means measuring how well the objectives were achieved for each activity, and the goal, overall. The smart self-marketer builds evaluation methods into the plan so that all the eggs are not in one basket if a specific action strategy flops. Time for an Attitude Adjustment Once you’ve evaluated results, adjust your plan, taking into consideration both positive and negative evaluations. Use your evaluation
to improve future programs. Identify the goals and objectives that will be the most difficult to achieve. What are the consequences of not achieving them? How might they be approached next time to improve chances of success? Explain how future programs might be modified to reduce negative consequences and undesired outcomes and to increase opportunities for meeting your goals in the next round. Whether you are building a company or advancing in your career, don’t leave anything to chance. Know what you want to do and why. Then as Nike says, “Just do it!”
