Ramadan is not about just fasting, its cleansing your soul. Acts of kindness, being patient, giving to charity, volunteering your time. During the month of Ramadan we are no different with our customers. We give them the upmost respect and patients to all mankind as we are taught to do in our faith.

I try to keep a smile and good attitude with all customers even though I am fasting and can make it a little difficult at times. In the end it’s all worth it.

Unfortunately, for me it’s hard to prepare and do anything for Ramadan since my whole family is back home in Sudan and depend on me to give them support for the holidays. I’m hoping that someday soon I’ll be able to go back and celebrate with my friends and family.

What are your favorite Ramadan/Eid traditions or memories?

One of my favorite memories was spending time with my family in Sudan and going to the mosque as a whole group. I don’t really get the chance to now since I’ve become a small business owner that runs the store on my own. So I hold on to that memory and cherish those times 15 years ago.

We prepare by closing our store before sunset to prepare for iftar (dates are eaten after sunset to break our fast). We also make sure to have the proper spread of food which consist of Piyajoo (lentils), Beguni (fried eggplant), Jilapi (fried sweet pastry), Muri (puffed rice), Samosa, Briyani (seasoned rice), and fruits. For iftar we invite friends and family over to our home to share a meal and immediately after we pray. Overall, we pray 5 times throughout the day which will helps keep us disciplined for the rest of the year.

What are your favorite Ramadan/Eid traditions or memories?

I remember being a kid in Bangladesh and

celebrating Ramadan. My favorite memory was the end of Ramadan where my friends and family would get together to celebrate Eid. Eid typically extends for 3 days of eating and praying. It’s also tradition to wear new clothes and the elders would gift kids with money.

What’s the best way to service your customers during the holy month?

In the past we would create custom Ramadan calendars where it listed the different prayer times and times to break fast (iftar). Its critical for Muslims to break fast at the exact time.

Some of the memories I remember most is going to the mosque as a child being hungry all day but the gift was at the end of the day when the community broke the fast together by contributing a meal to the mosque for everyone to enjoy.

That’s why we’re partnering with Ads-Up, a not-for-profit organization of volunteers that help the 1,250 refugees resettled in the U.S. under the US-Australia refugee deal.

Through this partnership, we’re able to help distribute and provide free access to wireless service for refugees from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and more.

“We learned that many refugees use the very limited cash they have to purchase a SIM card when they first arrive to let their families know they are safe,” Erin Anderson, SVP of Sales at Ultra, told PR Newswire.

“Beyond that momentous call, mobile service allows them to communicate with potential employers, see maps of their new neighborhood, find information and communicate with friends and family, not to mention access support from groups such as Ads-Up.
