“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” Martin Luther King Jr. was a preacher, speaker and community organizer who led the civil rights movement in the U.S. He led the first nonviolent civil rights demonstration in the U.S., boycotting buses until the Supreme Court ruled that laws segregating buses were unconstitutional. He was also a father and spoke of his children in his famous speech saying, “I have a dream my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

Frida Kahlo suffered a bout of polio as a child that left her with a slight limp, but things continued to get worse for young Frida. Her dream of becoming a doctor was shattered when a streetcar crashed into a crowded bus she was riding in. Kahlo miraculously survived being impaled by a handrail and suffered several broken bones and punctured organs, and made it nearly impossible for her to have children. During her long recovery, she took up painting and turned her physical pain into beauty, claiming that “Painting completed my life.” Kahlo’s vibrant and intensely personal artwork has made her globally celebrated, long past her death.

That lawyer was Mahatma Gandhi who became a global representative of peace and human rights. Gandhi’s leadership led to the end of British rule through civil disobedience. Nelson Mandela was a human rights activist and the former president of South Africa. Before his passing in 2013, Mandela spent decades protesting and resisting his country’s oppressive regime and eventually participated in the eradication of apartheid. His stand for equality led to his arrest in 1964, where he served 26 years until his release in 1990. During his imprisonment, he became the face for the antiapartheid movement both within his country and internationally. In 1994, he became the first black president of South Africa until he retired from politics in 1999. After his presidency, Mandela established a variety of organizations to address global problems and strive for peace and social justice.
Sun Tzu was a Chinese general and military strategist who authored the renowned book, The Art of War. The book reflected the conditions of warfare in China and was written as a result of his many experiences in battle. Sun Tzu saw war as psychological, and that defeating an enemy mentally was just as important as defeating them physically. As such, The Art of War is still very much referenced today in resolving conflict. It is often read as a self-help book to conquer one’s own negative thoughts. Additionally, business professors use it to teach their students strategies and lawyers use its tactics to win trials. Sun Tzu’s arguments are presented through the idea that with a condition of harmony a person remains strong, but if a person is in chaos they will ultimately be defeated.

Born in a small town in France in 1412, Joan was an illiterate peasant farm girl who was raised in a very religious home. At 13, she started having visions and claimed she was told to save France from England’s oppressive rule and to restore the throne to a Frenchman. At 16 she requested an audience with the prince of France, the future Charles VIII. Joan stunned him with information that “only God’s messenger could know.” Charles equipped her with an army and Joan led troops in a total of 13 battles, 9 of which ended in victory for her country. Through her fearless pursuit of her one mission in life, she restored a Frenchman to her nation’s throne.
Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford, England on the 300th anniversary of the death of Galileo. At 17, Hawking entered Oxford University, though he admitted he wasn’t the best student. In 1962 he moved to Cambridge for a PhD in cosmology and one year later was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease, which results in the degenerative loss of nearly all muscle function. Though his diagnosis gave him 2 years to live, he married and stunned the world with his PhD on black holes, making several brilliant discoveries. His book, A Brief History of Time, sold more than 10 million copies, exploring humanity’s deepest questions about the universe from a physicist’s point of view. Stephen Hawking is considered one of the greatest scientific minds of all time.

Lunar New Year is the observance of the start of a new year in a lunar or lunisolar calendar. The phrase is most often used to refer to a celebration held in China, but not limited to people of Chinese heritage, usually falling in late January or early February. The Lunar New Year of 2020 is the year of the rat, which is considered to be associated with yang (as in yin and yang) and represents the beginning of a new day. To celebrate, people put up red decorations and give gifts decorated in red envelopes, since red is believed to be an auspicious color. Red Chinese lanterns may hang in the streets and even banks and official buildings are decorated with red New Year pictures. The reunion dinner is considered to be one of the most important family meals of the year and may include yummy foods like dumplings, fish, chicken, noodles and more.
