Skating the World’s Largest Ice Rink Every winter since 1970, Canada’s National Capital Commission’s office has transformed Ottawa’s Rideau Canal into the Rideau Canal Skateway. At nearly 5 miles in length, the public Skateway holds the Guinness record for the world’s largest naturally frozen ice rink. Millions of Ottawans and visitors have skated, shuffled and slid up and down this UNESCO World Heritage Site for decades. A symbol of Canadian national pride, many eagerly wait all year for the ice to reach the 30 cm thickness requirement. AUSTRALIA
Going Out for a Night at the Movies As Canadians gear up for frozen fun, Australians prepare to catch a tan! December marks the beginning of summer for the Land Down Under, which means the start of another long-awaited season of Moonlight Cinema. Hosting outdoor movie viewing in major cities across the country, Moonlight Cinema welcomes families and friends to picnic under the stars. Local businesses and restaurants regularly sponsor these community events, so there’s no better way to get to know Australia than under the Moonlight. DENMARK
Leaping into the New Year…Literally The Danes know how to throw a New Year’s Eve party! In Denmark festivities begin with the Queen’s annual New Year speech at 6 PM. Your Danish hosts would then make a toast over champagne and serve you freshly baked Kransekage (“Wreath Cake”), an impressively tall pastry made of stacked marzipan rings. As the TV broadcasts the live midnight countdown from Copenhagen, don’t be surprised to see everyone climb onto chairs and tables. In the Danish tradition, it’s good luck to jump into the new year with your best foot forward!
