ne of humankind’s greatest Achilles’ Heel is our proclivity to take for granted those things that most deserve our gratitude.

Fortunately, it’s a rather common character flaw that we can actively work at correcting. We can cultivate the habit by turning our attention to all the beauty

to feel immensely privileged to live in Charleston, a city with such grace.

This year, the fascinating place we call home is turning 350 years old, which gives all of us an opportunity to reflect on our community’s long journey to the present. Charleston has persevered and prospered through difficult chapters and generations-worth of learning how to come together as one. Our history and identity are still being forged today through the alchemy of inclusivity and cultural cross-pollination.

Charleston’s 350th Anniversary also coincides with a global pandemic that has changed many of our priorities and long-held beliefs on how we live. For many of us, seeing the beauty in things that we used to take for granted has brought a new curiosity for our local areas. Now that we’re beginning to open our doors once again to let the sunshine in, the gleaming majesty of our city is more apparent than ever.

For guests visiting us for the first time, exploring our neighborhoods can be a uniquely eye-opening experience. This is perhaps one of the most exciting moments to rediscover the New South, a land with sights, sounds, and flavors that have shaped our approach to hospitality. A global-scale pandemic, natural disasters in Indonesia and Australia, humanitarian crises in Yemen and Venezuela, and civil unrest stirred by disturbing incidents of police brutality in our own backyard have dominated headlines for months.

These harsh realities have left some of us yearning for a lifeboat to keep us afloat. It makes sense that in this seemingly endless sea of turmoil, one of the best selling books on the charts is Rutger Bregman’s Humankind: A Hopeful History, a tribute to humanity’s goodness and its implications for our future. As Bregman suggests, seeing our past through a new light may better equip us to build a brighter tomorrow.

When revisiting the complex legacy of Charleston and the American South, we stumble across hundreds of pages written about somber chapters in our history. To more accurately present our multidimensional past, organizations managing historic sites have reevaluated their practices to paint a forthright picture for their guests, one that doesn’t conceal the indelible damage inflicted during the Atlantic Slave Trade, Civil War, and the Civil Rights Movement behind the veneer of our city’s charm. These measures have been implemented throughout the years in an effort to help eradicate ideological racism, which has numerous and pervasive forms, including omission and misrepresentation. Dismantling it begins with us coming clean about all the work we have left to do to build a future that isn’t plagued by fissures and failures.

The death of George Floyd in Minneapolis has spurred a new wave of anguish and protests across the country, perhaps most significantly in the American South, but it has also inspired a deeper awareness about the importance of equity and reconciliation as catalysts for strengthening our communities. Despite the stark contradictions of its past, Charleston has evolved into a city where common interests surpass prejudice, and where diversity is a trait not to be subverted, but cherished. There is redemption in our ongoing journey to healing from the hurt oppression has left behind, for both perpetrators and survivors. There is dignity in embracing a comprehensive view of the past and addressing difficult questions. But most importantly, there is poetry in breaking down barriers and pursuing unity in an often chaotic world.

As we celebrate Charleston’s 350th anniversary, rather than suppressing painful aspects of our trajectory, let us transform them into opportunities to cultivate understanding. May our history, as complex as it may be, give us perspective and inspire us to bravely stand against intolerance, discrimination, and violence. Maybe it aids us in forging our collective identity by reminding us of who we don’t want to be. And lastly, may it be a window into our souls, fractured enough to allow the light to seep through. Next time you stroll through our cobblestone streets, we hope all our community is truly seen. There is beauty in our flaws.
