Dinner and Theatre
Wendy
White Kniffen and Richard Kniffen, Publishers
One of our favorite things to do in St. Augustine is pair a great dining experience with a live performance, be it theater, music or comedy. The combination makes for an extra special evening—or afternoon, in the case of a matinee performance at St. Augustine’s premier community theater, Limelight Theatre (see ad page 49). And now we can add to that mix a world-class parlor magic show! What is “parlor magic” you ask? Often performed in a small drawing room, parlor magic offers a more intimate and interactive show than stage magic typically does.
For Master Magician Bill Abbott, his exceedingly elegant “parlor” is ensconced inside The Casa Monica Resort & Spa, a dazzling Mediterranean Revival Style architectural masterpiece in the heart of the historic district. After a cocktail reception in the Cordova Lounge, guests are escorted into his Magic Hideaway— “a boutique showroom with a vintage jazz vibe”—for a spell-binding and often hilarious display of mind reading and seemingly impossible sleight of hand. Because audience participation is such a big part of the performance, no show is ever the same, offering the ultimate opportunity for improv. Though dining before or after the show at Casa Monica’s signature restaurant, Cordova Coastal Chophouse & Bar, is an obvioius choice, there are numerous downtown dining options which would also make for a magical evening in the Oldest City!
Speaking of improv, another recent addition to the live performance scene is Third Space Improv (see ad page 51), an intimate studio space in downtown St. Augustine, for classes, team building and performances. Founder Amy Angelilli describes her studio as a place Where Creativity Meets Connection and Collaboration and welcomes the community and visitors to Come Play! “I want this to be an informal gathering space for creatives in St. Augustine,” she explains. To that end, she runs an improv school for grown-ups while hosting improv workshops, improv corporate team building, improv shows, improv mixers, improv camps for kids and any other improv event you can imagine. Whether you want to watch the show or you aspire to be the show, check out Third Space Improv. You never know what’s going to happen!
