Savoring Seafood in the Oldest City
Wendy White Kniffen and Richard Kniffen, Publishers
Named the South’s Best Food Town in 2019 by Southern Living magazine, St . Augustine offers an amazing variety of cuisines . From down home
Southern fare to high end fine dining to ethnic cuisines from around the globe, the choices St . Augustine restaurants offer are endless . One thing they all have in common, however, is seafood on the menu in one form or another When you dine in a coastal town like St Augustine, seafood—fresh, locally caught seafood—is often the star of the menu
Since both of us were born and raised in Florida, we sometimes take for granted the abundance and quality of fresh seafood available in our hometown . It’s when we chat with visitors from other landlocked locales, we realize how important seafood is to them and to this town!
In fact, our local wild-caught shrimp was named the official seafood of St. Augustine by the city commission in 2021! The designation honors the cultural, historical and economic impact of shrimping, which dates back to the early 1900s City commissioners unanimously approved the resolution to recognize the city’s rich maritime history, the importance of the local shrimping industry and the families involved in the trade .
Whether you enjoy a platter of golden fried shrimp at a casual familyowned seafood restaurant (like Schooner’s Seafood House), or pecancrusted black grouper filet finished with beurre blanc (on the menu at Collage), or a grilled fresh-caught mahi sandwich (Kingfish Grill serves an outstanding one!), be sure to indulge your seafood desires while you dine in and around the Ancient City!
