What Is a Cat Cafe?

­Wendy White Kniffen and Richard Kniffen, Publishers at cafes—cafe-style venues that allow patrons to visit and interact with adoptable kittens and cats—started trending in North American in 2014.

In 2020, not one but two cat cafes opened in St. Augustine and, we are happy to say, are both thriving. On a recent visit with my sister and nieces, who were visiting from Melbourne, Fla., we had to wait our turn for access to the popular kitten lounge at Frisky Cat Café and the main cat lounge at The Witty Whisker Cafe.

Not a problem, because the libations, cafe fare and boutique shopping was equally tempting!

Carla Forrest opened Frisky Cat Café in March of 2020 and Angeli Rodriguez and husband Dan Turner unveiled The Witty Whisker Cafe in June of that same year. The two cafes feature the same operational concept—the cafe offers a selection of beverages—including high-end coffee and wine and beer—and ready-made food selections such as pastries, muffins and the like. In both, a cordoned-off cat lounge is accessible for an additional fee to visit with the felines. Frisky Cat Café is in a larger commercial plaza off of U.S. 1 South and features a rather glam lounge decked out in coordinating tones of pink, grey and white. Witty Whisker Cafe—located in a smaller complex off of U.S. 1 North and next to the historic district—features a more bohemian vibe decorated with batik fabrics, Spanish tiles and vibrant colors. In addition to cafe fare and frolicking with felines, both cafes also offer fee-based events, such a yoga and art classes, done in and among the company of the resident cats.

In addition to owning her cafe, Carla also runs the not-forprofit rescue organization Small Lives Matter. Angeli works Angeli Rodriguez published Drinks & Whiskers, a description of her process to open The Witty Whisker hand-in-hand with another local not-for-profit organization Cat Cafe and how-to manual to do the same, available called Feline Canopy of Care. Both all-volunteer organizations on Amazon as well as in the cafe shop. rescue hundreds of abandoned and feral cats and kittens annually and through a network of volunteer foster families, get all of the kitties vaccinated, spayed or neutered, microchipped and then adopted through the cafes and other online adoption sites. Both cat cafes process the adoption fees onsite and have united hundreds of felines with a “furrever family.” As of presstime, Witty Whisker Cafe has facilitated 480 adoptions and always shares a heart-warming Gotcha Day portrait on their Social Media.

We hope you will go visit both cafes when you can and support them on a regular basis—every sip, every purchase and every adoption, if you are so inclined, helps these two lovely ladies and the friendly felines whose lives literally depend on them.

The areas that we refer to as “Greater St. Augustine” offer convenience, plenty of waterfront dining options and a must-see revitalized beach town.

ith U.S. Highway 1 connecting the paths to all parts of St. Augustine, this main artery is a commercial corridor filled with a wide selection of restaurants with easy accessibility and plenty of parking. A section of the highway is parallel with inland waterways featuring marinas and waterfront eateries, many accessible by boat or car. And, St. Augustine Beach isn’t the only game in our amazing town! Don’t miss a visit to the revitalized Vilano Beach Town Center with its fishing and sightseeing pier and mid-century modern architecture. This charming destination recently welcomed the unveiling of PESCA, a spectacular restaurant helmed by Chef Michael Lugo located inside the new Hyatt Place hotel. It is also the The Reef’s oceanfront deck site of the Whiskey, Wine & Wildlife festival in November, featuring numerous tasting events highlighting restaurateurs from the area. Continue north on A1A and you’ll find spectacular oceanfront and riverside dining on the Intracoastal Waterway.

From its fortress—completed in 1695 to repel invaders to this early Spanish colony—to spectacular Mediterranean Revival architecture and Victorianera homes built for prominent families and business owners in the late 19th Century, the buildings that house our historic district restaurants have walls that, well, have a lot to say! Restaurateurs who call the historic neighborhoods of St. Augustine home are a special breed as they add their own stories to the city’s history.

top to bottom and left to right: Anticipation for the grand opening of The Wharf Restaurant­— opening this Fall—is building and has been for years! This spectacular restaurant, which extends over the water on pilings, is built on the site of the old Santa Maria Restaurant, which perched there from 1949 to 2015. David and Cathy White and daughters Jennifer and Julie, owners of O.C. White’s, The White Room wedding venue and Chatsworth Pub, to name a few of their holdings, have put their heart and soul into this project as they overcame numerous challenges.

But the Whites have always proven where there’s a will, there’s a way. As a result, coming soon is what is sure to become the most iconic restaurant in St. Augustine. We can’t wait either! Also new on the scene in the historic district are two chef-driven concepts. Lotus Noodle Bar is helmed

by Chef Barry Honan, who trained and worked with several of the country’s top chefs from coast to coast. He offers modern Japanese cuisine prepared with French technique and has the entire region buzzing. La Nouvelle recently launched in a restored Victorian-era home is St. Augustine’s Lincolnville District. Michael Lugo, longtime chef-owner of Michael’s in the Historic District, took over the space after Preserved closed its doors and transformed it into a sophisticated French bistro serving lunch and dinner. All these new ventures call for a toast! A frozen sangria (pictured top right) from Café del Hidalgo, located right on St. George Street, hits the spot!
