A HISTORIC FILM.

The subject of “Shoah” is, as Lanzmann has said, death. The subject of “Unjust” is life. It’s a miracle that Murmelstein, in his position of terrifying proximity to barbaric overlords, was able to save as many Jews as he did—and to save himself.” Richard Brody

A MONUMENTAL FILM.

Murmelstein is one of the richest and most moving characters to appear in a film in ages, whether fiction or documentary.” Kent Jones, Film Comment

UTTERLY FASCINATING. a reminder of another way documentaries can be made: simply, agonizingly, without comedy or narcissism, and with unforgettable, almost unbearable power.” Stephen Marche, Esquire

EDITOR’S NOTE Happy Holidays! It’s that time again and we are so glad it is! From the gift guide we curate to the restaurants we review to the hotels we frequent, we’ve chosen the best for this joyous season. I hope you’ve seen a marked improvement in both style and content; my team is working hard to produce a magazine that is current, relevant, easy-to-read and most of all, pleasurable to the eye.

In that vein, we have the compelling story of Alexa Ray Joel. Gracious, talented and beautiful are just some of the adjectives that can be applied. She sat down with us, in her apartment and conducted an exclusive photo shoot (at her boyfriend’s restaurant, Bolton & Watt) and gave us a taste of her most intoxicating life. We are so proud to showcase her and are thrilled to report that this is her first magazine cover. I think you will also agree that we have some of the most captivating social commentary available in New York. From Joe Alexander, George Wayne, Patrick McMullan and Flo Anthony we offer our readers the juiciest tidbits of NY city society in a manner that is tasteful without being intrusive. From Caribbean hotels to the Queen Mary II, we’ve got your travel needs covered. As I’ve said many times before, we scour the earth to bring our readers only the best. Use these pages as your wish list and I promise you will love every minute of your fabulous vacation. We have also committed ourselves to bringing you stunning fashion pages this month. All the way from Russia, up-and-coming model Pavel Zaretsky whose exotic looks and extraordinary body guarantees we’ll be seeing much more of him on both our own pages and beyond. Included herein are family/parenting issues and real estate. In fact, we’ve recently secured expert advice from one of the major real estate brokers in the city. He will be guiding us through the most important trends, as well as giving us insights into what to look for when buying your next property. Look for this early next year.

RESIDENT ALIEN

By George Wayne

Conrad New York - Atrio Restaurant o I packed the Porsche Design Luggage one recent long weekend and took a “Staycation” to one of this city›s greatest neighborhoods – Battery Park City. There GW took up a four day residence at the simply chic and exquisite Conrad Hotel all the way down at 102 North End. It was the very same weekend as I unpacked the designer luggage that early evening from the gorgeously chic executive Suite 1436 as GW uncorked the complimentary Veuve Clicquot; the boys a few blocks east on Wall Street had much to celebrate too, having pushed the boundaries of the Dow Jones Industrial to historic, record highs well beyond 16,000. It was the same week when the hallowed Christie’s Auction House had sold well over half a billion, (half a billion!) dollars worth of contemporary art that GW was loving the ideal of “hotel living” from one of Manhattan’s greatest best kept secret destinations - which is itself a nexus for some of the most amazing contemporary art to be seen outside any New York City museum. The hotel’s quality was evident upon arrival - the greeting was divine and from some of the finest, well-trained hotel staff I have encountered in some time; they were all happy to treat George Wayne as if he were George

t Resident December 2013

Clooney. It was most readily apparent, as I jumped out of a yellow cab, that this hotel was absorbing, with its stupendously gorgeous and impressive atrium and lobby and the vast absorbing Sol Lewitt site-specific masterpiece “Loopy Doopy” (Blue and Purple, Acrylic paint, 100x80’). I mean this is a monumental piece of art commissioned from the artist who created conceptual art and no one really knows it›s here in the fabulous lobby of this clearly art-centric luxury hotel. There are over 2,000 modern and contemporary pieces of art throughout the space. Pat Steir›s “Topsy Turvy” is the perfect complement to the Sol Lewitt, large and graceful and provides the gradient and the scale and the genuine sweep of say the cables of the Verrazano Bridge, which can clearly be seen from certain rooms of the 463 rooms of the all - luxury suite threeyear-old Manhattan hotel. There are well known works from many others such art stars as Frank Stella, Julian Schnabel and Jeff Koons. I will never forget that Friday night sitting alone in the dark of the well-appointed living room and watching yet another Nat-Geo documentary of JFK and looking over my left shoulder at precisely 1:48am that morning at the touching and incredibly apropos image on the wall behind

The 2013 version of The Angel Ball was, for me, the best and also the most moving ever. I cried like a baby during the dinner, the great cancer survivor and friend Ethan Zohn brought me o tears with his speech. It was about as much as I could do was run outside to cry like a baby instead of ruining Tara Williams’ gown. Montel Williams and his wife were seated at my table - across from GW was the icon Clive Davis and one his favorite socials, Nikki Haskell, a table away was Donna Karan Weiss and Hugh & Donna Jackman and so on and so forth. me. It was a moment in time I will personally never forget, watching this assassination documentary and turning my shoulder to admire the touching Elizabeth Peyton print right behind me “John & Jackie,” a lithograph of Jackie O in a Burberry trench walking the young John John down the street with a mother’s affectionate touch as she fussed with his hair. It’s a brilliant portrait and a simply unbelievable moment. Such is the life of George Wayne. Then there was the gorgeous Saturday dawn and morning that day with not a cloud in the sky. As you can imagine at this point in time, Battery Park City might as well be renamed Baby Stroller Park City. A Saturday power-walk through the Hudson Park and neighboring landmarks like, One World Center, which is viewed best from the esplanade of where West Street meets Albany Street. From there the postcard picture perfect view of America’s newest and finally completed landmark is best acknowledged. One World Trade Center is a brusque, imposing and far too assertive fellow, but he does have flawless, beautiful skin. After that it was a quick stroll through along lower Greenwich Street and past the huge crowds lining up for the 9/11 Museum to have a quick ale at the legendary - The Fraunces Tavern where George Washington lived in 1719. Dinner that evening was in one of the Battery Park City›s best neighborhood restaurants, which happens to be right there

on the second floor atrium of the Conrad Hotel. Atrio Wine Bar and Restaurant under Executive Chef Anthony Zamora is indeed a local standout of a fine achievement. The Ahi Tuna Crudo is exceptional, and that is just for starters. On a 2pm on a Sunday afternoon the baby stroller gridlock by the PJ Clarke’s in the Battery Park City mecca is like a yellow cab nightmare in Times Square and to be avoided at all costs. Sunday’s in this part of town is about the Hottie Daddy types with their even cuter tykes strapped to their torsos proudly power walking about their weekend Daddy duty. It is all rather endearing one must admit; sometimes. GW was more than thrilled most of all to live up to the hotel brands motto and indulge in “The Luxury Of Being Yourself ”as the Conrad Hotels & Resorts, which the global luxury brand of Hilton Worldwide loves to expound.

The model Jessica White wore the most revealing gown of the night but Selita Ebanks was the belle of the ball in my humble estimation. Chaka Khan was at full throttle and you should have seen Tommy & Dee Hilfiger burn up the dance floor for the after-party. Martha Stewart and GW triple air-kissed, and of course there was the huge and emotional hug at the end of the success evening with the incredible hostess with the most-est... Denise Rich! And I will be in touch. •

That meant more room service, cuddled up in bed reading the dailies and watching English Premiere League Football and French rugby and the BBC World News and working on my book “The Uncensored Vanities” and reading the fascinating Richard Buckle biography on “Nijinsky” - just loving and living the fabulous hotel life. And as such “The Conrad Weekend” could not have been more fabulous! A week or two previous - yours truly was also down Wall Street at that fabulous banquet hall

they call Cipriani Wall Street for the annual rite of passage for GW - attending the society gala of the season, The Angel Ball, which benefits Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for blood cancer research. It so happens that my beloved mum died from brain cancer three days before the Angel Ball of 2002. And I wlll always remember going ahead with attending Denise Rich’s Angel Ball that year eleven years ago and then catching an Air Jamaica flight home to bury my mother at the Mandeville Anglican Parish Church in Mandeville, Jamaica. So every year when invited I make it to the Angel Ball to celebrate my mother’s life and share the immense and laudable work that Denise Rich continues to do year after year to help find cures for cancer.

Gracious, well-spoken and not to mention, extraordinarily beautiful, Alexa Ray Joel is the new IT girl of the city’s music scene. The only child of award-winning musician Billy Joel and supermodel, Christie Brinkley, Alexa Ray is thriving as both a musician and as an arbitrator of taste. And it isn’t luck that has propelled her this far – it’s hard work, talent and perseverance. It shouldn’t be surprising then that her career is destined to explode and turns her into a household name – one as big as her parents.

I could tell from our first meeting that she was diminutive in anything but personality. Our second meeting only reinforced this. Insisting that we conduct the interview at her apartment, she welcomed me with a warm smile and a soothing voice. Here, in her gorgeous two-bedroom apartment in Nolita, she creates her catchy tunes, gleans inspiration from the city and finds solace in her own private sanctuary. Knowing she had other plans, I tried - in vain - to hurry through the interview; she’d have none of that and instead we spend our time luxuriating over her past, present and future. The whole time she was thoughtful, vivacious and erudite on all the subjects we covered. Delving right into the heart of the mater, I asked her about “living in the shadow” of her parents. With frankness, she replied: “It’s a great deal of pressure, but doing this Gap song – which I thought, if anything, was going to put more pressure on me – of course, I am self-conscious – my father is an iconic, legendary musical genius, but the experience was cathartic and helped to relieve the pressure about singing one of dad’s songs. I can appreciate his music even more, because I know the back story; a lot of the material is about me or my mother. I always wanted to touch upon his music, but was always scared – this was a relief.” Having a father who was a lyricist, I can well understand the struggle that Alexa Ray has gone through. Yet, she has wrestled that demon and come to terms with it, “Yes, I want to be me my own person and convey my own identity, but at the same time, I don’t want to deny or not pay homage to my father’s incredible body of work. Before taking on the Gap commercial, I was reticent to touch his work, but once I started playing the chords for Just the Way You Are, it was therapeutic – I was able not to be so hard on myself; in fact, I was proud.” The process of her getting The Gap commercial and it coming together in such an extraordinary manner, was an intoxicating one: “They came to me – I have always been a huge fan of The Gap commercials – remember Mellow Yellow? – I was very flattered; I didn’t know initially what they wanted from me and when I found out they wanted me to do one of dad’s songs, I was nervous. They ended up giving me three options to sing – New York State of Mind, Piano Man and Just the Way You Are. I thought – I can’t do Piano Man, because I’d be piano girl; New York State of Mind is masculine – only dad or Tony Bennett could pull it off – so that left Just the Way You Are. I felt passionately that I had to put my own spin on it – I was glad The Gap gave me the creative freedom to do it.” Moving beyond The Gap, we talked of her earlier success with Notice Me, which I still throughly enjoy. With catchy lyrics and a melodic, hummable line, the song was her first success: “That did really well on Sirius radio. One of the offshoots of being the child of someone famous is that I’m a perfectionist. I’ll do a lot of recordings and I’m very reluctant to release a song. But, Notice Me, came together very quickly. I actually wrote it while I was taking a shower.” She then turns to the meaning of the song, “I never found my way romantically, until very recently. I was very naïve and I would come on too strongly; I didn’t know how to act around guys. I wrote the song because I had a crush on this guy and I didn’t feel I was getting the right reaction from him; a lot of girls feel like that – an unrequited crush and I think not enough artists are writing about it.” When asked about her future plans, Alexa Ray is just as forthcoming. “I’m working on new material; looking for a new New York spot. I’ve played a lot of great rooms in the city. I was doing a showcase, monthly, at The Living Room, which I loved. Another favorite was playing at the Oak Room at The Plaza; it’s a New York institution. Another development is that I’m in talks to host my own radio show on Sirius. I have a live audition – it’s very exciting – it’s nerve racking!” Being that this is Resident Magazine we had to ask about her relationship with New York. “I can’t remember the last time I’ve written a song outside of the city. This is where I write – at home; it’s where I’m rooted; it’s where I grew up. And I love the eclectic energy of this place – you walk outside – especially in a place like Nolita – you never know what you’re going to find.”

Her love of all things New York, is so deeply rooted that she couldn’t possibly live anywhere else: “I was just in London a few weeks ago – I loved it – it’s elegant, clean and everyone’s so put together. But, everybody looks the same; all the guys wore suits. It’s a very monotonous visual. In New York, you can’t possible imagine all these different types coexisting. You never get bored; it’s so dynamic. I’ve traveled all over the world and I don’t see characters as interesting as in New York.”

What she’s wearing: Nicholas K smoke pattern knit shorts & granite sweater RAIF black cashmere top Prada suede oxford booties

When asked about what she wishes to accomplish with her career, she reflects and answers: “My dream is to be able to promote a message of honesty whether with music or in anything that I’m doing. I don’t think to be a role model you have to be perfect. I’ve been very honest with the press, even when I had my nose done. A lot of people would cover that up. I want to be a voice for young women. I want to empower them – I’ve been through a lot – and I want to send them a relatable message. Regardless of who your parents are, where you come from or what you look like – you can embrace your flaws and be honest with yourself. We’re not living in a time where that’s really possible – there’s a lot of pressure on young women. We need more honest women who are willing to talk about their struggles.” And with that, Alexa Ray and I conclude the interview. Clearly, here is a woman with passion and zeal for life. But, beyond that, here is a woman who is strong, well spoken and most evidently on the road to major success. We wish her luck on her journey and we’re glad she chose us as her frist magazine cover. •

Luxury On The Amazon:

Mystical Machu Picchu:

A short car ride from Iquitos airport brought me to the 5 star MV Aria for my cruise on the northern Amazon River. With outdoor Jacuzzi, masseuse, and bar stocked with top shelf drinkables and all varieties of Inca Pisco for the famed Pisco Sour, this floating luxury hotel had the requisite creature comforts to keep me happy for the next 3 days. My handsomely decorated, air conditioned suite had a sitting area and floor to ceiling windows for scenic viewing. Waking to the sun rising over the Amazon from the comfort of my bed was glorious.

Set in a cloud forest and resembling a sprawling Andean village, the Relais & Chateaux Inkaterra Machu Picchu is a splendid nature retreat with stone pathways threading terraced hills, lush gardens, waterfalls and mountain vistas. My lovely casita featured a veranda with chairs and private garden for reading, relaxing or meditating. I enjoyed the guided nature walks and a visit to the sacred ancient petroglyph. After an indulgent massage at Unu Spa I headed to the outdoor Jacuzzi and soaked in the heated water with cocktail in tow. A dinner of Andean trout and beef tenderloin with vegetables and herbs fresh from the garden, with views of the Urubamba River, was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Innovative Peruvian fare highlighted the gourmet cuisine, locally sourced, of course. After savoring exquisite dishes including Dorado fish, braised short ribs and amazing seafood tiradito paired with fine South American wines, I was not surprised to learn that chef trained at Le Cordon Blue. Daily, we boarded skiffs for wildlife safaris on the mighty Amazon, passing water taxis, women washing clothing on the riverbank and a father and son in a fishing boat. Our excellent guides spotted harpy eagles, turtles, macaws, herons, egrets, falcons, caimans, sloths and capuchin and howler monkeys, examples of the region’s rich biodiversity. It wasn’t all watching: I swam with pink Amazon river dolphins, fished for piranha and had the sweetest experience bottle-feeding an adorable baby manatee at the Manatee Rescue Center. Interacting with indigenous people in their homes and schools in the native village of Puerto Prado was a memorable experience. So was a healing ceremony with a local medicine man reputed to have great curative powers, a reminder that sixty percent of the world’s medicine is derived from plants in the Amazon rainforest. Our trek in the Pacaya Samiria Reserve gave a thrilling view of both a baby anaconda and a tarantula. aquaexpeditions.com

The highlight, of course, is the visit to Machu Picchu Citadel. An architectural wonder 8,000 feet above sea level, its palaces, temples and gardens seem to be miraculously carved from the hillside. The spectacular beauty and majesty of the magnificent ruins take you back in time to the ancient kingdom of Inca emperors. Mystery surrounds the actual functions of the structures now known as the Chamber of the Princess, Royal Tomb, Three Windowed Temple, Temple of the Condor, Temple of the Sun and Intihuatana. Immerse yourself in the mystical, spiritual energy of the Inca culture and take in the grandeur. inkaterra.com/inkaterra/-machu-picchu

Captivating Cusco:

I Arrived at Puerto Maldonado Airport and transferred to a NPUPSCPBU GPS B NJOVUF SJEF EPXO UIF .BESF EF %JPT 3JWFS a tributary of the Amazon in south east Peru. Eco lodge Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica, adjacent to the spectacular Tambopata National Reserve, gives the ultimate up-close and personal experience with nature. I entered another world at this exotic retreat, waking to the serenade of tropical birdsong, imbibing the serenity and beauty of the rainforest.

Driving through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, I arrived in Cusco. This vibrant capital and spiritual heart of the Inca Empire enchants with its elegant balconied buildings and picturesque squares with trees and fountains. In this fascinating city, you’ll find the international smart set side by side with locals in traditional garb. The Quechua women’s brightly colored skirts, hats and adornments inspired high-end shoe designer Tabitha Simmons to fashion her new line of resort sandals after them.

My thatch-roof wooden cabana had its own bathroom with hot water & shower, and a screened siesta lounge with hammock. Perfect for lolling and relaxing. There’s a tree house for romantic evenings and celestial dinners in the clouds. I enjoyed locally sourced food and jungle pampering at Ena Spa. Guided excursions include spotting impressive tapirs, capybaras and agoutis on a twilight boat safari with stars in the gorgeously black sky. On the exhilarating canopy tour I got a bird’s eye view of the Amazon from walkways suspended high in the treetops. My favorite was trekking the scenic wildlife reserve with its lovely cobalt blue butterflies, followed by a canoe excursion on picturesque Lake Sandoval with giant river otters, white caimans, hoatzin birds, side neck turtles, harpy eagles, point-tailed palm creepers and adorable monkeys playing on the vines. inkaterra.com/inkaterra/reserva-amazonica

Cusco boasts both old world charm and a modern trendy vibe. Strolling the cobble stone streets with Inca and colonial architecture, I passed art galleries, swank jewelry shops and a shaman shop that ran healing circles in the Andes Mountains. And there is no shortage of stylish restaurants. I still dream about the mouth-watering ceviche, chili chicken and huge selection of Pisco drinks at Calle del Medio. Fashionistas will love the boutiques offering the finest alpaca and vicuna clothing you can’t find in New York. At the center is Plaza de Armas gloriously illuminated at night, with Koricancha, once the richest temple of the Incas, now an ornately decorated cathedral. Marvel at the lavish gold crown of the Jesus effigy. Also worth a visit: the Inca Museum, and San Blas, the artist’s quarter. The stunning Relais & Chateaux Inkaterra La Casona, near Cusco’s main square, is an 11-suite mansion that has been spectacularly converted to a luxury boutique hotel with sumptuous courtyard. My elegant suite was decorated with Spanish accents, plush fabrics, colonial furnishings and striking objets d’art. Gastronomic dining, a cozy fireplace and oversize marble bathroom with butler at the ready to draw my bubble bath make this posh palace a home run. inkaterra.com/inkaterra/la-casona

Both Aqua Expeditions and Inkaterra, a top Peru specialist that arranges travel in addition to owning luxury properties in the country, support wildlife and rainforest conservation. By visiting them, you are not only a luxury tourist but also an active participant in preserving this most precious rainforest and its people.

Queen Mary 2 Holidays on the High Seas

By Joe Alexander

fter decades of spending Thanksgiving in America, I decided it was time to create a memorable moment for my family and have our turkey on the high seas. The Empire State Building was lit red to commemorate the occasion when three majestic ocean liners, Cunard Line’s Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria and Queen Mary 2, gathered in New York harbor before sailing past the Statute of Liberty under a dazzling fireworks display. This unique event is called a Cunard Royal Rendezvous. I decided to choose one Queen on which to make the most iconic of all sea faring trips, a transatlantic voyage over the holidays. I chose to cross the pond on Queen Mary 2, who sails proudly as the flagship of Cunard Line, because she is the longest, tallest, widest, the most luxurious ocean liner ever built. Her 30-knot speed allows her to leave lesser ships in her wake. Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II christened this floating palace named after IFS HSBOENPUIFS JO QSPDMBJNJOH i* OBNF UIJT TIJQ 2VFFO .BSZ .BZ (PE CMFTT IFS BOE BMM XIP TBJM on her before she broke a bottle of champagne over the bow. Her maiden voyage was from Southampton, England to America and it was this itinerary that I decided to retrace after the Titanic sank amidst the same waters in 1912. The difference between a cruise and a voyage is that the latter takes you from one place to another with no stops. It is on these blissful days when you see nothing but the drama of rolling waves and black nights filled with constellations of stars, made all the more brilliant by the absence of civilization; that is the stuff of dreams, romance and memories. An extensive roster of royalty and luminaries have traveled on Samuel Cunard’s ships since he founded his legendary fleet in 1840, from H.R.H Princess Diana of Wales, Prince Charles, the Queen Mother, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Duchess of Cornwall to the Sultan of Johor, King Hussein of Jordan, Queen Marie of Romania and the Shah of Persia. Princess Grace of Monaco, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Robert F. Kennedy have also all strolled Cunard’s hallowed halls. Hollywood royalty, including Charlie Chaplin, Rita Hayworth, Walt Disney, Bob Hope, Joan Crawford, Noël Coward, Bing Crosby and Elizabeth Taylor, who spent four of her eight honeymoons on the high seas, two with Richard Burton, were also Cunarders. Silver screen goddess Marlene Dietrich was a frequent passenger, famous for never being seen at breakfast and rarely at lunch but she never failed to make a dramatic entrance at dinner.

Ship side, we were greeted by a quartet of redjacketed bellhops, their gold buttons gleaming and their traditional caps strapped on snuggly. As we embarked, White Star Service Bellmen picked up our Louis Vuitton trunks and we were escorted over the gangplank, through the Grand Lobby, where live music played in the background, and into our glamorous stateroom that was ritzier than the Ritz. We were in the Queens Grill Suites, which is limited to 192 guests out of the 2,620 on board. Our personal butler and steward, who were on call 24/7, greeted us in our spacious suite that was comprised of sitting and dinning areas, a bar, a bedroom, two bathrooms and a walk-in closet. The Pièce de résistance was our private balcony, which ran the length of our rooms, giving us a sea view from everywhere but the bathtub. It was all terribly POSH,

Serving one of the best she crab soups in the area, other delectable choices include coq au vin, hoppin’ john shrimp and crab, bbq rib in bone short ribs, and pluff mud pie all served in generous portions with no scrimping on the calories. Explore downtown Charleston by horse drawn carriage as you meander through cobble stone streets passing majestic homes from the antebellum South and hear the tales of the Southern belles as well as stories of the red light district and famous spots that determined the fate of our nation. Shoppers will find lots to see at the Old City Market that sells local handicrafts, Southern pralines, and artisan works, while King Street is lined with fashionable boutiques, jewelry stores, art galleries, and antique stores. Experience life in the ocean at the Charleston Aquarium with its impressive multi story aquarium filled with aquatic life, a turtle rescue and educational center, and also the rare albino alligator. No trip to the South would be complete without a visit to a Southern plantation. Founded in 1676, Magnolia Plantation and gardens has survived wars and a divided nation, and represents the glorious past of Southern grandeur. One of the prettiest and most romantic gardens in the US, it was a testament of Thomas Drayton’s love for his new wife to convince her to adapt to the South. Relive the romance while walking past sweeping trees, blooming flowers, latticed gazebos, and quiet lakes, and you can see how easy it is to fall in love with the area’s Southern charm. wyndhamrentals.com thefathen.com poogansporch.com magnoliaplantation.com

Holiday s we approach the holiday season, New Yorkers have a tendency to flee the city with vacations on their mind that incorporate the 3 Rs - rest, relaxation, and revelry. Whether you are longing for a sunny beach or golf or just a change of scenery here’s a couple of easy holiday getaways for the family that make it easy to avoid the hassle of holiday travel.

For those seeking an endless summer, visit the gorgeous and sunny desert island of Aruba that has the highest tourism return rate of any Caribbean island and lies outside of the hurricane belt, and after one visit you will see why. In just a few hours from New York City, you can find yourself sitting on a white powdery beach and swimming in the calm sparkling waters on this slice of paradise while basking in the sun being cooled by the balmy Caribbean tradewinds. A perfect holiday getaway for couples or families there are plenty of outdoor activities on this happy island. As the island is known for its impressive scuba and snorkeling, spend the afternoon taking a Catamaran sail to the dive site where a former WW2 ship was sunk and is now teeming with colorful exotic fish and sea life. Explore the rugged and expansive desert terrain of the uninhabited side of the island in an open air jeep and experience the beautiful and dramatic landscape with cliffside ocean views, climb the Gold Mill ruins, and visit the Akirok Park whose highlight is the natural tide pool that’s like snorkeling in nature’s giant fishbowl. One thing you will notice on the drive along the rocky coast are the millions of individual rock piles along the way that have been created by tourists adhering to an ancient Indian tradition. Stack at least three rocks that represent love, wealth, and health, and when the ocean blows them away your wish will be granted. To truly enjoy paradise, the Hyatt Regency Aruba is situated on the serene Palm Beach. Surround yourself in landscaped gardens filled with exotic talking parrots, and decide how to spend your day whether lying under a palapa on the beach, enjoying a rejuvenating massage at the Zoi spa, cooling off on the water slide that drops you into one of several picturesque pools, or testing your luck at the casino. All of the newly renovated luxurious rooms feature oversized marble bathrooms and terraces that face the ocean. Unlike other hotels in Aruba, everything from the lobby to the lounges and restaurants is open air to truly enjoy the tropical breezes. Food is also a treat here with contemporary Mexican specialties featuring fresh seafood and meat served at Ruinas del Mar and the casual beachfront Palms restaurant that specializes in fresh island cuisine with an Aruban flair.

For an unforgettable dining experience, try Papiamento, which is named after Aruba’s language. Located in a lush tropical garden surrounding an inviting pool and charming house, this romantic open air candlelit restaurant is a favorite amongst locals and visitors. Representing the flavors of the different cultures that have settled in the island, the Ellis Family has creatively infused different Caribbean spices and ingredients to create unique takes on traditional Aruban dishes that are primarily stews and seafood resulting in an unique fusion of flavors that are only found here. One of the best things about visiting Aruba for a holiday stay is the convenience of clearing US customs in the Aruba airport saving time on your return to JFK, the only thing is that you won’t want to leave! aruba.hyatt.com

In the event of war between the Soviet Union, the United States wanted to ensure that there was a continuity of government. Since the ending of the war this top secret location has been open to the public and visitors can take guided tours behind the hidden walls. The Magic and Enchantment of a Pocono Mountain Christmas Do you envision a holiday season filled with old-fashioned warmth and tradition like those we enjoy in family albums and classic films? With just a 90 minute drive from the New York or Philadelphia areas, you and your family will find the idyllic country setting of The Inn at Pocono Manor and the simple joys of Christmas as it was in years past. The Inn at Pocono Manor creates a holiday experience where visions of sugar plums won’t be hard to come by, and your children will wonder if this is, indeed, the North Pole! Built as a Quaker retreat in 1902, the Inn is the oldest continuously operating resort in the Pocono Mountain Region and is on the National Registry of Historic Places. On Thanksgiving Day, we open our holiday celebration with the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus. Throughout the season, the Inn is

transformed into a winter wonderland with thousands of twinkling lights, decorated Christmas trees, Christmas carols old and new, and the comfort of a warm fire. During the annual Magical Fireside Christmas guests can enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides, riding in a life-size “toy” fire engine, visits with Santa and the magic of a storybook Christmas coming to life. Children can decorate Christmas cookies and make crafts with an assist from one of our many Elves, feed baby rescue deer, imagine living in our life-size gingerbread house and write their letters to Santa. Through a very special arrangement, all letters are answered directly from the North Pole! Overnight packages are available with options to add a small decorated Christmas tree to your guestroom or have one of Santa’s elves visit your guestroom with hot chocolate, cookies and a bedtime story. It truly is Christmas at a home-away-fromhome and, even better, at Santa’s home-awayfrom-home!

The Magical Fireside Christmas is open from Thanksgiving Day through December 30th. Hours are Fridays from 4:00pm – 9:00pm, Saturdays from 12:00pm – 8:00pm and Sundays from 12:00pm – 5:00pm. Admission is $5.00 per person which includes five activity tickets. Additional tickets are available for purchase. We welcome your contributions to Toys for Tots, which are collected throughout the holiday season. Escape the city and bring your family to the crisp, clean country setting of The Inn at Pocono Manor and experience the Christmas of fairytales and dreams! We invite you to ring in the New Year with us, as well! Select from family packages or our adult only celebration. Utah: Something for everyone By Bob & Sandy Nesoff ention Utah to anyone and thoughts immediately go to the great Mormon religion and Robert Redford’s Sundance Film Festival. But there is more…oh so much more. Flying out of JFK via Delta Airlines was easy. It was an opportunity to test-fly our new Delta Skymiles/American Express Gold Card. The lure of 40,000 bonus miles for signing up and other perks was too much to pass up. Other New York area airports also serve Salt Lake City, but Delta offered non-stop as opposed to flights out of Newark by other lines that took as long as it does to fly to London and included stopovers. Since skiing was going to be a main focal point of this trip being able to take along a checked

t Resident December 2013

bag was of critical importance. The new card not only offers priority boarding, but provides one free checked bag for the holder and up to eight others traveling on the same reservation. That’s quite a saving. With ski jackets, pants and other gear, it was an impossibility to use only a carry-on. The Delta Lounge in SLC was also available for a small fee that was well worth it, providing a comfortable place to wait and have a drink or snack while waiting for a flight. The sight of a snow covered Salt Lake City from the air is spectacular. The city is ringed by mountains and is an awesome welcome. The airport itself is traveler-friendly and rental cars are easily accessible and ready to go. The temptation to stay in Salt Lake for a tour is strong with the beautiful Mormon Temple and the hall where the Tabernacle Choir

sings is one of the most amazing venues in the world. But save all that for the return or another visit. Utah is arguably one of the most visitorfriendly destinations in the world. That may be a strong statement but not when you note that the majority of ski areas and vacation resorts lie within an hour’s drive of the airport. Many, such as Park City-Deer Valley are just a bit more than a half hour drive. That’s more time to relax and enjoy a vacation. Although the drive to Midway in the Heber Valley was about 45 minutes, we almost wished it was longer. The Wasatch Mountains, especially when snow-covered, are an aweinspiring sight and something that should be taken in slowly with time to appreciate and enjoy.

The view from the room is a killer with snowcapped peaks surrounding the valley. Directly across the road from the resort is one of the more unique spots that should be on a “must see” list; the Homestead Crater. The crater sits under a huge, natural dome and is hollow. Inside is a natural hot spring that fills the crater with a humid fog. Swimmers loll around even though outside temperatures hover just below freezing. Add to that the opportunity to scuba dive in the middle of a field and you’ve come up with one of the most unusual vacation opportunities anywhere. If you are intent on skiing, there is a bit of a drive from Zermatt to the areas of Park City, Deer Valley and The Canyons. These three rival anything the Alps can offer and are a lot closer and less expensive to get to.

One run at Deer Valley is some five miles long with easy turns and a view that goes on forever. Although it is an intermediate (blue) run, the trail is wide enough and turns gentle enough that any ability can enjoy it. While Zermatt and the Park City area are wide open, Redford’s Sundance Resort is tucked away into a small valley tat could easily pass for the old outlaw, the Sundance Kid’s Hole in the Wall hideout. There is a narrow road off the main highway leading directly to Sundance, bordered by steep mountains on both sides. Redford has crafted one of the most ecof-riendly resorts in the world. The accommodations fit neatly into the natural surroundings and virtually everything is either recycled or made on premises to minimize the footprint. The ski area covers some 500 acres out of about 5,000 acres owned by the actor. He has taken great pains to ensure that development in the majority of the property is a non-starter and that it remains in a natural state. For skiers this is as much a Nirvana as Park

City. Lifts seem to go on forever, giving downhillers long, gentle runs. Advanced skiers are not forgotten with Black Diamond runs that will challenge those who prefer extreme skiing. Dining at Sundance is an experience with a variety of wild game offered, prepared by the hands of expert chefs. While the restaurants are toward the bottom of the mountain, there is no need to drive back and forth to your accommodations. Sundance offers a shuttle service that is literally at your beck and call. Just pick up the phone in your room and the van is there in minutes. The drivers also act as bellmen and will haul your luggage to and from your cabins. As spring beings to approach and the snow creeps slowly up the mountains, Utah takes on a new role for vacationers. The sign is out “Families Welcome” as well as adults only. • For more information, check out: visitutah.com

The Legend of Sanibel, Florida The first European landed on our shores about 500 years ago. Columbus whet Spain’s appetite for exploration. He dreamed of reaching Asia by sailing west, but he needed funding. Queen Isabella denied him three times; finally she declared “I will assume the undertaking for my own crown of Castile, and am ready to pawn my jewels to defray the expenses of it, if the funds in the treasury should be found inadequate.” In 1492 Columbus’ ships landed in the Bahamas and he claimed them for Spain. His expedition continued on to Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Columbus returned to the Spanish court with natives and gold, exaggerating the significance of all he had found. Historians believe he was accompanied by Juan Ponce de León on his second expedition. When rumors of gold surfaced, Juan was given permission to find it. When he heard tales of a fountain of youth, he looked for that too. Around the time of Easter celebrations, he landed in a beautiful place he named Pascua Florida – Spanish for feast or festival of flowers. He continued exploring Florida’s coast and named Sanibel “SanYbel” after Saint Isabella of Portugal – the patron saint of brides.”

By John Friia ith the New Year on its way, the hopeful resolutions of a bright and healthier 2014 come into view. One of the most common goals is to join a gym and get into shape, but unfortunately the majority of us fail at those resolutions by the middle of January. For people that are serious about getting into shape, there is a solution - Lift Gym, which has a unique model that other gyms do not follow.

Entering the 4-floor workout haven, Lift Gym is the only private training club in New York that works with over 60 independent trainers. What makes this gym different than the usual gym is the trainers bring in their own clients. Opening in 1996, owner and personal trainer Ken Fitzgerald created an environment that accommodates all types of trainers and people interested in working out. “I wanted a set up that was best for my clients and other trainers,” stated Fitzgerald. “We have many different philosophies helping everyone.” The workout oasis offers all members a place to grow their strength, functional, corrective exercise, post-rehab and athletic and cardiovascular training. Aiming to improve the overall well being of clients, Lift Gym provides nutritional counseling, massage therapy as well pilates and gyrotonics. “We have over 60 personal trainers that are top certified with at least a 4 year degree,” stated

t Resident December 2013

Fitzgerald. He explained all trainers have a large following and have been in the fitness business for numerous years. Lift trainers also travel to clients homes if necessary. DR. JOE’S A – B – C GUIDE FOR EASING YOUR HOLIDAY STRESS he holiday season is upon us, so stress levels can go into overdrive. The recent shootings at malls, airports, and skating rinks may heighten our sense of fear relating to holiday shopping and traveling. So follow these tips to allow yourself to embrace the spirit and joy of the holidays along with a sense of heightened security and personal safety for you and your loved ones.

A – A Plan of Action. Have a plan of action by creating a safe zone so family members know where to go and what to do if tragedy strikes. Have an emergency contact list that’s easily accessible for everyone. Write your phone number on the inside of your child’s backpack and jacket along with their names. If they get lost of separated from you, your information is easy to find. Teach your children how to identify store clerks if they are separated from you. B – Be Aware both Indoors and Outdoors. Be aware of your surroundings and don’t be afraid to report what you see. Keep your eye out for security guards and ask for help. Avoid parking next to vans, trucks; instead park in a well-lit area close to store doors. Use an ATM in a highly visible place. Shop at night with a friend and keep purses, wallets, and cash in your front pockets. Don’t approach your car if suspicious people are close by. C – Children should Stop and Think. Practice the “1-2-3 Step Rule” with your children – they can only be three steps from you. Teach your children their full names and phone numbers to give to a police officer. Role play different “stranger danger” situations and discuss how people can say and do tricky things that can be harmful to them. D – Do Not’s. Do Not put yourself in upsetting situations or say ‘yes’ when you really mean ‘no’. Do Not overindulge in alcohol and sweets - you’ll regret it later. Do Not forgo your exercise regimen – it helps to keep balance in your life and burn off the extra holiday calories. Do Not ignore the physical (lack of energy, insomnia) and mental signs (irritability, forgetfulness, lack of resilience, case of the blues) of stress – it will diminish your joyful spirit. Do not pin your happiness on how successful the holidays are – let go of perfectionistic tendencies. E – Educate with Facts. Did you know that flying is twenty-two times safer than traveling by car? Bring your ‘toy box’ full of treats and games for the flight or car and focus on your destination and the new and wonderful adventures you will have together. Encourage your children to communicate their inner thoughts and fears with you so you can dispute their myths. F – Forge Ahead. Remind yourself these tragedies are rare occurrences, and although we cannot control acts of violence, we can continue to live our life with love and compassion each day. Monitor your child’s TV time, as they process tragedies differently than adults. G – Be Grateful. Count your blessings – even the little ones are meaningful...be thankful for today! Spread holiday cheer with laughter and smiles. Thinking positively and you won’t trigger your body’s stress response. Keeping an optimistic outlook will help you to cope more effectively. •

5 W ay s t o G i v e Your Kid an At t i t u d e o f G r at i t u d e from Empowerment Expert Jen Groover With the holiday season quickly approaching, children are inundated with advertising and talk of toys and gifts, creating a seemingly endless stream of “I want’s.” It’s easy for children to forget about all the things, both material and immaterial, that they already have in their lives. According to Empowerment Expert Jen Groover, it’s important to teach children to express gratitude at a young age, as gratitude is a powerful emotion that will help them find peace in trying times as they get older. Gratitude also teaches kids resiliency, which is one of the key components needed for success and happiness. Your viewers can help their kids appreciate all that they have with Jen Groover’s 5 Ways to Give Your Kid an Attitude of Gratitude:

Give your child a gratitude journal.

1 3 4 5

Encourage them to spend ten minutes each day writing or drawing about the people and things they are grateful for.

Create a gratitude ritual.

Give thanks together.

2

On Thanksgiving Day, have everyone share what they are grateful for. Both kids and adults can write cards for or draw pictures of the people and things they are grateful for. Hang them up to remind you kids of all they have to be thankful for throughout the holiday season.

Set a time each day, whether at the dinner table or in bed, when you and your children can reflect on the day together and share all the little things they were thankful for that day.

Be a gratitude role model. Gratitude isn’t just for kids – Set an example by saying “please” and “thank you,” sharing generously, praising your children when they express gratitude, and showing how grateful you are for what you have when interacting with your children.

Make a gratitude board. Gratitude isn’t just for kids – Set an example by saying “please” and “thank you,” sharing generously, praising your children when they express gratitude, and showing how grateful you are for what you have when interacting with your children.

The Most Wonderful

Time of the Year By Dr. Jo Webber or most people the upcoming holidays are something to look forward to. Businesses shutdown and the frantic pace of the modern day work environment is put on a two-week pause. During this time families get together and enjoy some downtime together, kids are freed from the rigors of school, and if we are lucky Mother Nature delivers a little snow to help set the tone. Last year the average family spent over $500 on gifts, with over $400 going to family members. This is the most significant time of year for retailers both in brick and mortar and on ecommerce. This year Wal-Mart is offering a 32 inch flat screen TV for $98 down from $148 last year. This may seem like an unusual gift – but the point is that people spend an average of around $140 on self-gifting during this season. This year with Thanksgiving being so late, and with disposable incomes only rising slightly over 2012, retailers are positioning attractive offers to try to tempt shoppers to buy gifts and self-gift alike. Gift cards are likely to be popular again this year particularly with

family members struggling to keep up with teenage wants and needs. One thing we have introduced at Virtual Piggy, which is very popular, is our Wishlist. Teens and tweens manage their own accounts and can easily load items onto their Wishlist. They can then share the Wishlist with mom or dad – or with other friends and family members via email or social media. This makes it easy for the older family members to keep up with young family members. The teens and tweens who are using our service are highly motivated to keep their wishlists up to date (too critical to make a mistake here) and we have also noticed that many of the accounts are flagging charitable donations as a desired gift. There are some organizations such as the Charity Choice card that make it easy for family members to gift the gift of a charitable donation to a child and empower them to make the selection of the charity. Giving to charity is often the most pleasant thing we can do for ourselves and for our children. Everyone feels good when you help out those who have less than you. Hope you all have a Happy )PMJEBZ 4FBTPO Ήt

Restaurant Roundup By Hillary Latos

ith New York abuzz with holiday merriment and cheer, we scoured the city and beyond to find the quaint neighborhood spots as well as glitzy New York hotspots to enjoy the season. Whether you are looking for comfort food with a twist, Italian, haute French, or steak and seafood, there is something for everyone here. While there is always pressure to have the best New Year’s Eve ever we’ve come up with a few romantic spots or destination restaurants that will not disappoint with unsurpassable menus to ring in the New Year.

Ken & Cook If you’re looking for a one stop shop, Nolita’s hotspot Ken & Cook has it all. Helmed by Jean Georges alum Artan Gjoni, upstairs serves American nouveau cuisine with a French twist that has a wide selection of fresh raw bar options and contemporary brasserie fare in a vintage downtown setting with exposed brick, tin ceilings, leather banquettes and wood paneled walls. Start with the raw bar seafood tower with a plentiful variety of daily shellfish. The dinner menu can easily transition to late night bites with classic comfort fare with a luxe twist in dishes such as fried chicken with honey biscuits, fried oysters with siracha, short rib with crème fraiche horseradish, and snapper in lobster consommé. Post dinner engage in some late night revelry downstairs in their cellar bar that has become downtown’s destination stop, Lil Charlies, that channels the 70s disco glam with a sparkling disco ball and a shimmery bowed ceiling, which also happens to serve the best mojitos in town.

Ken & Cook 19 Kenmare St. (212) 966-3428 kenandcook.com

Joe & Misses 45 East 1 St. (212) 780-0262 joeandmissesdoe.com

Sirio Famed restaurateur, Sirio Maccioni has brought his signature panache to the Pierre hotel as a more casual outpost to his formal Le Cirque. Like all celebrity chefs he has a line of products, an empire of restaurants around the world and a circle of BFFs that include celebrities, jetsetters and moguls. One of the reasons why he rose to fame and was able to keep his post is his consistency of always serving delicious authentic Tuscan fare. His menu is largely inspired by his youth, growing up in Tuscany, and some of his most famous and popular dishes are the tuna tartare with mango, truffle porcini mushroom soup, lobster tagliatelle, lamb ragu papardelle, seared sea scallops, and Mediterranean branzino. Even if you can’t get out of work early, their happy hour from 5-7 serves $1 oysters and $5 local, craft, and Italian beers, which is a mere bargain in this posh area.

Joe & Misses Doe At first glance this quaint East Village eatery looks like you may have missed your stop and are in the hipster-centric, Williamsburg. It has all of the requisite trappings of a Brooklyn hipster hangout, the seating uses reclaimed church pews, the exposed brick walls are decorated with vintage car facades, twitter and instagram is encouraged, and the bar only features obscure craft liquors. But it’s not until you taste their sophisticated twist on comfort food that you know you are in Manhattan. Everything from their drinks to their small plates are made to share, and with only 8 tables, expect a bit of a wait. Highlights from the menu are the spicy, sticky & sweet wings, the mouthwatering French dip dumplings with mozzarella and au jus, overstuffed baked clams and fish with tomatillo salsa burritos. Get the party started with a potent fish bowl sized cocktail for two (or three) such as the Pacific Palm with vodka, lime and coconut, or a Mega Michelada with beer, tequila shots, with a side of lime & siracha.

For lighter fare, the Mesclun Salad with Port Wine Onion Jam, served with radishes and pecan crusted goat cheese or Ahi Tuna & Mixed Greens Salad, served with sushi-grade, spice dusted, seared rare, and citrus vinaigrette are popular options. Perfect for those wishing to converse over a cold pint, guests can select from an extensive menu of 13 craft beers. If an expertly mixed cocktail is more to taste, there is a selection of inventive signature cocktails from which to choose. Among the most decadent beverage options are the Caramel Chocolate Martini, prepared with Godiva Caramel Chocolate liqueur, Stoli Vanilla, Dark Crème de Cacao, and garnished with chocolate shavings, and the White Orchid Ketel One Citron, prepared with Domaine de Canton Ginger liqueur, white cranberry juice, splash fresh squeezed lime, and candied ginger. The interior decoration evokes a classic American Nouveau bar theme and sets the scene for a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. With wood paneling throughout, both high-top and booth seating as well as

lounge-style seating, fireplace, 36 foot bar, and 20 flat screen TVs throughout, this dynamic entertainment space encourages guests to sit and stay a while. The third floor is comprised of the exclusive Executive Lounge, adorned with large leather arm chairs, low tables and soft lighting, and an alfresco dining space for those wishing to enjoy the breeze. 4 Food Delights ast food that is good for you may sound like an oxymoron, but New Yorkers can indulge their taste buds in a new type of comfort food. When it comes to the double burger with cheese fries, I struggle to make the right choice, but stepping into 4food and looking at the menu the healthy alternative do not seem bad. De-junking fast food is 4food’s motto. It is fresh, nutritious but most of all delicious. Free range turkey, pancetta bacon, mushroom and onion on a brioche, labeled as the Growburger, caught my attention out of all the sandwiches and one bite into it, I concluded that this is my new lunch spot. Creating everything from scratch, including the bun that holds the food, 4food uses vegan and gluten-free ingredients. Serving locally grown food from turkey farms in Pennsylvania, beer from the Hudson Valley 4food supports local farmers, brewers and artisans. Satisfying my carving for macaroni and cheese the rich and creamy blend of sharp cheddar and grated Parmesan cheese some of the best I’ve tasted and the price is perfect. Even the vegetables have a unique taste, including the roasted root potatoes seasoned with herbs and fresh garlic. If you don’t see something on the menu that tickles your taste buds, you can customize burger for your own creation. Not only does 4food offer a delectable selection of food, but also it is socially conscience. Every time someone purchases a socially good burger, 4food will donate twenty-five cents to a cause that is close to you. A Taste of India By John Friia ne of the many goals while living in Manhattan is finding delicious food at an affordable price that delivers to your apartment. With numerous types of cuisines, the possibilities of where to eat are endless, but if your taste buds are craving Indian cuisine check out Patiala in Hell’s Kitchen. While entering Patiala, the scent of the spices enchants the air and makes visitors feel they traveled to an Indian city, instead of a New York eatery. Looking at the board filled with entrees, sides and vegetables it is hard to make a decision, but after examining all the choices I decided to try the Chicken Chettinad and Mattar Paneer. Wanting to immerse myself in the culture I decided to stay and sit in the

t Resident December 2013

small section of seating. With one bit of Chicken Chettiand, the pepper and curry flavors took over my taste buds and I could not have had enough of the dish. To finish my visit I had a side dish of green peas with cheese and creamy sauce, which is known as Mattar Paneeer. On another cold night, I didn’t want to leave my apartment – and why should I when Patiala is more than willing to delivery lunch or dinner to my doorstep. The restaurant allows people to order meals online and have it brought home. Instead of walking along 34th Street in layers of clothes, I was curious to see how long it would take for the food

to be delivered. Within a half an hour, the apartment transposed itself into Patiala’s kitchen. Whether people like chicken, lamb, shrimp or some of the other wonderful signature Indian dishes, like roti, Patiala brings the feel of Indian into Hell’s Kitchen. With it cravings for this exotic and unique cuisine can be satisfied anytime. • Patalia 371 W 34th St. (212) 564-8255 patialany.com

s many of you know, I go out to restaurants quite frequently. On these excursions, I meet people from all walks of life. Inevitably, once they find out I write about restaurants, they ask for recommendations. This isn’t so much of a problem for French, Japanese and even Indian cuisines. But when it comes to Italian, it’s a more difficult proposition. Firstly, there are too many choices and as an Italian I can see the positives and negatives of each establishment, in a way that I can’t do with the others.

my guest and I were in heaven. The creations, prepared with care and skill by, Chef Molly Nickerson, were not only a testament of the quality of food, but also a love song to Italy.

Yet, there is an Italian restaurant I had the pleasure of eating at recently, located on the Lower East Side, which I have and will continue to recommend to those aforementioned askers. That restaurant, Sorella, is chic without being pretentious and cool without being annoyingly hip. The staff – from bartender to owner – is friendly, knowledgeable and efficient.

Other dishes were just as divine. Lingurian anchovies with salsa verde, lemon butter, and hazelnuts, served on flatbread were briny, tart – with the perfect amount of crunch. The vitello tonnato, a perennial favorite in Italy, was served on a crostini with shaved celery, parsley and fried capers. It was truly an enlightened dish.

But we aren’t here to talk about the staff or the interior; it’s all about the food and from first mouthful of appetizer to last bite of dessert,

Mention must be made of the most unique dish on the menu (and arguably the tastiest the broccoli fritto. Served tempura-style with

pickled hot pepper aioli, Granna Padano and basil it is magic to the tongue. I say this with the most sincerity as possible - it was one of the best dishes I have ever tasted. Crispy, warm, spicy and with the on-trend addition of umami, it was a wonder to behold. I went gaga over it. I would be doing Sorella a disservice if I didn’t mention their pastas. From an Agnolotti with celery root puree, braised oxtail and sage butter to a Pici with spicy pork ragu, Salvatore ricotta and pepperoncini – each pasta dish was a little piece of perfection. Desserts too are worth trying. No matter what you have, you will leave with a smile on your face. Trust me, there are few places I can so highly recommend. You will enjoy Sorella - it’s a guarantee. • Sorella 95 Allen St. (212) 274-9595 sorellanyc.com

RedFarm Pleases the Palate here are few times that I can truly remember every dish that I’ve eaten at a particular restaurant. And there are even fewer times that each dish is remembered with such pleasure than at RedFarm – the ultra hip and deliciously sinful Chinese fusion restaurant in the West Village. RedFarm brings a greenmarket sensibility to modern and inventive Chinese food combined with a décor that can’t be beat. From the first bite of the spicy crispy beef to the last scoop of mango panna cotta, my guest and I loved every moment. It didn’t hurt that the staff – hipsters and trendsetters – were friendly, helpful and interesting to talk to. Or that the space itself – with its communal table, moody lightening and rustic charm – was the perfect setting to enjoy the wildly popular creations of chefs Joe Ng and Ed Schoenfeld. Apprehensive, as I usually am, to make sure I order the best of the menu – I conferred

t Resident December 2013

with the knowledgeable bartender who steered us in the right direction. We began with the aforementioned spicy crispy beef, which had complexity, depth of flavor and excellent texture; it was a portent of good things to come. We also ordered a duo of shrimp dishes – shrimp-stuffed shishito peppers and yuzuwasabi shrimp that we both seasoned perfectly and cooked to perfection – allowing the shrimp to be juicy, plump and tender. From there we moved onto the acclaimed (and I promise delicious) dim sum. It is here that chef Ng talent shines brightest. We enjoyed the most famous dish on the menu, ‘Pac-Man” shrimp dumplings. The dish is comprised thusly, four dumplings of various flavors (crab, leek, lobster and bamboo shoot - all with shrimp) and a tempura fried sweet potato shaped in the form of Pac-man…chasing the dumplings to eat. It was a clever presentation, but most importantly it was a delicious dish. Other dumplings we enjoyed were the pork &

crab soup dumplings and the crispy duck and crab dumplings. Each was a standout dish in it’s own right. We eventually moseyed along to the entrees and ate a deliciously innovative three chicken chili that was spicy (but not overly so) and moist. Another favorite was the sautéed lobster, egg and copped pork. Many adjectives come to mind to describe the dish, but succulent is the most apt. In the end, RedFarm is a restaurant that is both satisfying and hip – a rare combination in this city loves superficiality and pretense. My guest and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal and urge you to try it yourself! • RedFarm 529 Hudson St. (212) 792-9700 redfarmnyc.com

I ta l i a n a s A r t am of the firm conviction that there is nothing better than Italian in New York City. From homestyle to “alto Italiano” (highclass Italian) there is much to choose from in our fair metropolis. And now with the opening of East 12th Osteria there is an option that is as delicious as eating in the land of La Docle Vita. With smart, sensuous and smallish options – chef Roberto Deiaco has created a menu that is a delight to both the eyes and the palate.

The same attention to detail was also found in Signore Deiaco’s pastas. The Gnocchetti, Imperiale di Granchio - gnocchi with crabmeat, in a creamy chili pepper tomato broath was a

Deiaco opened East 12th Osteria with his wife, Giselle, who runs the front of the house. The couple renovated a bodega with furniture they designed themselves. The space – small, but sexy – makes the perfect package for Deiaco’s food, which is bold, confident and most importantly, delicious. We started with a vitello tonnato – thinly sliced veal, tuna sauce, orange and grapefruit segments and caper berries. It was vibrant, zesty and a true Italian classic. Another favorite was the fritto di mare with juicy shrimp, tender calamari, musky red mullet and appetizing zucchini blossom – it was another Italian homerun.

taste. We savored each morsel and we cajoled and pleaded with the chef for more; he happily obliged. For the main dishes, there was a duck two ways that was another mouthwatering option. The two options were – an intensely flavorful confit and a delicate breast, thickly sliced and cooked to perfection. The acidity of the orange essence cut through the fat and provided even more depth of taste from the bird. There are few times in which I can report that each dish I had was sensational. I could give you a laundry list of items I ate – each better than the next, but suffice it to say that East 12th Osteria will make you smile. You may even hum an Italian tune or two as you leave. •

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a small bowl, combine the olive oil, sage, thyme, garlic, salt and pepper. Rub or brush spice mixture all over roast (inside and out). Place roast, bone ends up, in a shallow roasting pan. With butchers twine, tie the bones into a circle. Cover top of roast with aluminum foil, folding over the tops of the bones to prevent burning. Bake roast for approximately 20 minutes per pound or until an internal temperature reads 150 degrees F. Rice: In a medium saucepan, sautĂŠ the shallot in butter until tender. Add wild rice and chicken stock. Stir to moisten the rice and bring to a boil, stirring only once. Cover with a tightly fitting lid or foil; reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat and let stand 10 minutes with the cover on. Gently fold in dried apricots, dried cranberries and pecans, being careful not to stir too much. Hold warm until ready to serve. While roast is resting for 15 minutes prepare finishing sauce. In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt butter. Add sage and cook for one minute. Stir in chopped pecans, brown sugar, cranberries and cider. Cook through until mixture begins to bubble. To Serve: Remove foil from bone ends. Place the roast on a large beautiful platter. Mound the rice mixture in the center of the roast and spoon the finishing sauce all around the bottom of the roast. Garnish with fried sage leaves.

laying with platinum and diamonds are all in a day’s work for jewelry designer Michel Piranesi. As a teenager in Milano, Italy, he learned about jewelry design and production from his father. “It started with my great grandparents,” Piranesi says. “They were well known silversmiths in Italy. They used to get regular commissions from the royals.” Piranesi continues to create extraordinary pieces with his Valenza-based jewelry company, Sintessi. His private clients include Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, Kimberly Rockefeller, Anne Hearst and her sister Patricia Hearst Shaw. Michel and his company are constantly giving back to the communities he works in. In October, he gave a ruby ring to the Alzheimer’s Foundation Rita Hayworth Gala and in November he gave diamond earrings to the French Heritage Society as well as a ruby and diamond poodle pin to The Southampton Animal Shelter. When in Palm Beach last winter, he worked with Ambassador Mary Ourisman and gave a percentage of all his sales to the Red Cross. At 17, Michel’s father sent him and his two brothers to handle the family’s business in the States. “When I got here, I fell in love with

America,” remembers Piranesi. “It was like walking into heaven. I knew this was where I wanted to be.” While all of his jewelry is handcrafted in Valenza, Piranesi travels between Italy and the United States to ensure production on both ends are up to his strict standards, “I have great teams in both Italy and in America. Our amazing pool of artisans can create anything I design or imagine,” said Michel.

Using art and people as his inspiration, Michel has designed thousands of pieces of jewelry from the simple and timeless to the lavish and astonishing. “The inspiration can come from a painting or a photograph,” Piranesi explains. “I remember one image of Jackie Onassis that was so striking, I literally felt it opening up my mind. And that’s when the design comes out.” Sintessi’s sparkling pieces are painstakingly made by hand, ensuring

every stone is perfectly set. “We live in a time where everything is fast and readily available,” says Piranesi. “I make sure the extra time is taken in making my jewelry perfect. The effort is noticeable and worthwhile! You can always see the difference between a machine and an artisan’s hand.” Piranesi uses only the best highest quality metals, platinum and 18 carat gold, in pink or black and titanium. He specializes in using gemstones with rich pastel colors, which he says, “add vibrancy and life” to his dazzling creations. Sintessi’s flagship salon, located in the Calvin Klein building at 654 Madison Avenue, is just the beginning of Piranesi’s vision for his company. “There’s a niche for jewelry everywhere in the world,” he says. “I want Sintessi to fill that niche.” Although he plans to adorn Hollywood’s brightest stars in his shimmering designs during the upcoming awards season, Michel says, “Every women deserves to feel beautiful and it makes me happy to help them feel that.” For private viewings call (212)-796-5005. • sintessi.com

You need to interact in order for people to transact.

Jim Kaplove & Jessica Morgan - Innovative Real Estate Team By Isaiah Negron t is said that when living in New York City, you are always looking for either a job, a partner or a place to live. Though the first two can be more elusive to even the savviest New Yorkers, finding a home you love can not only be easy, but it can be exhilarating as well. Jim Kaplove and Jessica Morgan, Team Kaplove Morgan of Halstead Property, bring an inventive attitude to real estate, giving clients that thrill of finding a new place to call home. “A home represents the kind of life you want to live,” says Jessica. “And given its cost, a home and the value it gains represents, in a very concrete way, the life you will be able to live.” The duo has become a formidable force in the real estate realm. James Kaplove, ambitious financial executive whose successful career extends over 35 years, combines his quick thinking and technical real estate know-how with that of Jessica Morgan, a spirited and equally driven real estate agent who has just been nominated by the National

Association of Professional Women for their Executive Professional Woman of the Year Award. James’ multifaceted experience in the financial and real estate worlds gives his clients the assurance that they are in the hands of a seasoned professional who is focused on efficiency and results. Jessica’s fresh energy and innovative strategies have allowed the team to expand into unchartered areas, employing social media outlets to utilize vivid images and interactive videos. They now offer clients real estate capabilities far above the norm and are rapidly expanding their demographic to include a younger clientele. “We’ve heard a lot of people say both to us and others ‘Jessica and James are an experience,’” James remarks. “They know that we really care, and not just about the sale.”

“You need to interact in order for people to transact,” Jessica says. “The key element to out partnership is to offer all of our clients service and loyalty. We’re client-centric.” Always making themselves available for their clients, they work day and night doing their best to achieve results. “It’s all about meeting and exceeding what our clients wants,” comments James. Their winning combination has begun to make their mark in New York City and they are always looking for new ways to be advocates for their clients. “We do whatever it takes to help them understand and see potential, yet stay comfortable with their budget,” says James. Jessica adds, “Home is not just a physical place. It’s where your life is.” •

In addition to their novel real estate strategies, Team Kaplove Morgan make the extra effort to get to know their clients and give them that sense of home while still looking for one.

Billy Morrissey Small Business Financial Leader By Isaiah Negron ntrepreneur Billy Morrissey’s financial programs have put him at the top of the alternative financing industry. In response to the recent American economic slowdown, Morrissey decided to move forward from his real estate background and career as a stockbroker that spanned two decades and founded Merchant Solutions Group in 2007. “I called my mother and told her about my plan.” Morrissey remembers. “She thought I was crazy.” Starting off as a oneman business, where he fielded every incoming phone call himself, Morrissey has now built his company to an industry powerhouse, becoming one of the country’s leading providers of cash advances to small and mid-size businesses and franchises. “The numbers we do in a month are in the top ten percentile in America,” Morrissey says. “And we’re always looking to keep growing.” This fall Morrissey has made a 5,510 square foot expansion in his New York City offices, now encompassing both the 19th and 20th floors of his building at 11 Broadway. He also has an office in Chicago. Since its founding, Merchant Solutions Group has funded more than 500 businesses in every state across the country with over $200 million in working capital. Their clients range from retail stores, restaurants, hotels, liquor stores, bars and owners of such franchisees as GNC, Lucile Roberts, Beach Bum Tanning and Subway. Morrissey states, “No matter the industry, we try our hardest to find a program for businesses looking to expand and grow.” When Superstorm Sandy struck New York last year, Merchant Solutions Group funded 12 different businesses that were damaged in the storm’s wake, providing over $500,000 of recovery funds. Morrissey also reached out to businesses after the catastrophic BP Gulf Oil Spill and Hurricane Katrina. “Small business America isn’t helped by the big banks. That’s our niche,” says Morrissey. “While banks say no, we say yes.” His commitment to business owners, especially in their time of dire need, goes hand-inhand with his own plans to expand and become even more successful.

As the year draws to a close, businesses in New York City and across America are preparing for the dreaded first quarter of the fiscal year, when profits are usually at their lowest. Morrissey, however, is gearing up for a booming start to 2014. “The holiday rush will be over January 1st and this will be our best quarter,” he comments. “It’s a new year with new beginnings, new goals and new drives.” Not only has Merchant Solutions Group increased its office space they are also doubling their staff to 80 employees this January. With a sterling reputation and the assets to keep flourishing and help America’s businesses grow, Morrissey says, “I want to be the largest company in the industry in 3 years, and I know we will be. The sky is the limit. I want to help every entrepreneur with a dream to succeed.” • (212) 374-0129 merchantsolutionsgroup.com

POSITIVELY ERNIE By Ernie Anastos

s someone who has been anchoring the evening news in New York for many years, I am often faced with the challenge of presenting people with sensitive and unfavorable information. Negative news can often take a toll on people’s lives; that’s why I look to find some positive stories to report. As anchor of the Fox 5 News at 5 o’clock and a daily contributor on WOR 710 AM radio, I am keen on sharing uplifting stories that can make a difference in how we think, feel and act. Every day I encounter people who are also enthusiastic about fostering positive ideas and experiences that can change their lives, their communities, and the world.

An Interview I Will Always Remember Let me share an interesting story. My television guest was an NYU social scientist. We were live on the news talking about the issues of life. The guest turned to me and said, “You know Ernie, people often look for three things in life they ‘think’ will make them happy.” She went on to explain that it becomes a progression. “First, they want more. It’s a desire for more of whatever they need; more money, power, whatever. Even after they get it, they’re not satisfied. So, the next thing they want is to make it better. It’s a passion to totally upgrade, like a better home, a car, even their mate. Okay they do it, but something is missing - not really satisfied yet. The third approach is to be different. That’s the answer! Be unique, original and set yourself apart from everyone else. Let’s go for personalized clothes, jewelry or customized cars. Unfortunately, even after all three – more, better and different a person can still feel unhappy. But, one thing can change all that.”

Author and television personality Dr. Ruth Westheimer says there’s one great way to staying positive. “Passion in life is the center of one’s being. Follow your heart and enjoy each day.”

I quickly jumped in on that note asking, almost begging, for the answer. There was a slight pause and then she responded, “What makes the difference is purpose. A person who has a sense of their purpose in life can find real satisfaction and fulfillment.” We had great reaction to that interview and reminded me of a fitting quote, “Instead of striving for success, strive for significance.”

Stay in touch! If you want to be part of this growing initiative, please send your stories to ernie.anastos@foxtv.com. Together we can make a difference. Stay tuned, and stay positive.
