s you’ll be able to tell from the cover and the pages within, Resident has decided to turn it up a notch. From the cover story, to the gossip pages, we’ve made major changes and I’m very happy to present them to you. When I met Jonathan Cheban, I wasn’t necessarily impressed. Here was – at my first estimation – a scrawny guy from Jersey. Well. I couldn’t be denser. After having lunch and strolling the streets together – it’s clear that he’s on top of what’s hot and he knows what’s relevant. We think he makes an excellent cover. I’m glad to say, we’ve since become friends. We’ve also added spectacular pages on street style during New York Fashion Week, Portraits of the City, the U.S. Open and George Wayne (of Vanity Fair fame) has contributed his second edition of Resident Alien. On a monthly basis, we’ll be featuring our Top 25 list. This month, it’s the top New Yorkers I’d like to know better and why. From Hillary Clinton to Emily Smith and everyone in between, I think you’ll find the list thought provoking. We’re also proud of our collaboration with Ernie Anastos. After having him on our cover in December of last year, he and I have

Around The Town With Columnist Joe Alexander & Photographer Patrick McMullan carlett Johansson raised the temperature at the Toronto Film festival with her sexy new comedy Don Jon. Her director and co-star Joseph Gordon Levitt, said “I thought the idea of a guy, who watches too much pornography, and a young woman, who watches too many romantic Hollywood movies, was a hilarious way to ask the question. ‘How different kinds of media we consume impact our love lives?’” As for Scarlett’s beauty secret she confessed, “I’m a big napper, even if it’s just for ten minutes; it will save you. I’m convinced it will keep you looking young and fresh.” Fashion week’s best shows included Zang Toi, Douglas Hannant, Zac Posen, Vogue Italia and Michael Kors, who shared his tips for getting through Fashion Week at the FIT Couture Council Luncheon where he received their Lifetime Achievement Award. “Sashimi is definitely a fashion friend. And I’m totally addicted to iced tea. I suck it down all day. Thank God for Splenda.” His pal Hilary Swank said, “I count myself among the diverse echelon of women who wear his clothes, which include Angelina Jolie, Blake Lively, Jennifer Lopez and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Kate Middleton’s cousin, burlesque star Katrina Darling brought her saucy show presented by Premium Vodka Stoli to XL at THE OUT NYC. Darling, who sports nine tattoos and is fresh off the cover of Playboy said, “I never feel naked on stage I only get nervous after I get off and say ‘Did I just do that?’” The articulate twenty year-old confronted the Stoli Vodka controversy head on. “I drink Stoli and I don’t think they should be blamed for Putin’s ignorance about the LGBT community.” The night benefited the Spectrum Human Rights Alliance to help put an end to the LGBT injustices in Russia. By George Wayne knew when I was asked to cohost a fabulous fashion week luncheon with the iconic nutty (and legendary) supermodel Janice Dickinson that this would be one fabulous afternoon filled with mirth, catty quips galore and one for the ages. Sure enough, the nutty 70s queen of the catwalk did not disappoint. GW and his cohosts including of course your esteemed Editor-in-Chief, Christopher Pape, the holistic spa queen, Cygalle Dias, and the emerging up and coming music producer, Evan Zampella, spent the most divine afternoon meeting and greeting beautiful male models with names likes: Matthew Addison, Harrison Quinn and Derek Keene and uptown girls, such as: Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin and divorce attorney par excellence, Nicole Noonan. Between the nutty former supermodel and her multiple wardrobe changes, and regaling us with tall tales as the catwalk queen under masters such as, Gianni Versace (the nicest, greatest human being I’ve ever met), Valentino and Gianfranco Ferre, she’s written a book or two but she certainly has a few more in her. We all gorged on the most divine platters and platters of the finest catch of the sea and when you dine at a legendary seafood boîte like, The Chowder House, in the hallowed,

t Resident October 2013

Empire Hotel, you know that the catch of the day whether it be the delectable lobster or the prawns or king crab or mussels and other beauties is going to be beautiful. This was washed down with champagne and the finest Russian standard, Moscow Mule cocktails. It was just the most absolutely fantastic way to spend a glorious afternoon between fashion shows.

Speaking of shows -- GW will be the first to admit he did not sit in every front row this season -- who has the time, unless your name is Anna Wintour? But, there were two shows that I just loved, loved, loved! For GW, it’s all about emerging talent and as such two new emerging labels - Cushnie et Ochs and Meskita, with a grand debut from the Brazilian-born now New Yorker, Alessandra Meskita. The New York Fashion Week debut of Meskita brought to mind the ephemeral nymphs and sirens of Brazilian myth - think Yemanja the iconic mythological Brazilian goddess of the sea. Think sensuous billow; think subtle sensuality and sexuality in subtle palate of blues and purples - a patina that bought to mind the hues of the finest oils of a Venetian Renaissance master -- think Titian. Think of a spring/resort 2014 collection that any woman of any age will lust for as she readies her 2013 wardrobe for the kasbahs of Casablanca, her yacht moored of St. Tropez, her estancia ready and waiting in gorgeous, Punta del Este. Think magic, superb craftsmanship -- a collection honed from the finest Italian silk and hand-woven cashmere cotton crochet from her native Brazil. It was one sexy, gorgeous collection. Trust GW on this the name, Meskita is one you will want to own for seasons to come.

cover of Vanity Fair. That classic iconic image of Michael Jackson ripping off his white shirt for the cover of Vanity Fair and of course the years and years of working exclusively as stylist to Madonna.

The highlight of my fashion week however was having the most divine day of lunch with the legendary celebrity stylist, Lori Goldstein. Lori Goldstein - when all is said and done - may well be able to declare that she was the first stylist as celebrity in existence -- all those that followed - Rachel Zoe, Phillip Bloch, June Ambrose, etc., owe it all to Lori. Lori and GW had the most fabulous afternoon over lunch at da Silvano’s. And boy was it ever a scene - there was Hugh Jackman strolling by after picking up his kids at The Red School next door to the eponymous New York restaurant. And who was that other up-and-coming New York designer, sitting right next to us and eavesdropping on our conversation? Yes, that was indeed, Wes Gordon. And then there was Tyra Banks with a trail of paparazzi in her wake dashing over to

say hello to us both as she exited her lunch at Bar Pitti. Lori has a fabulous new hardcover jewel of a book, which this arbiter, will now declare is a must own for your coffee table this Christmas. The book which recalls her fab life working with the masters - Annie Liebovitz, Steven Meisel, Mario Testino, etc and the legion of super celebrities and the iconic images she styled and created -- that iconic image of the nine months pregnant Demi Moore on the

After having a sneak peek at this sumptuous coffee table book -- I can tell you the chapter recalling her first meeting with Madonna is GW’s personal favorite, Lori had GW completely in awe, as she sat at that table at da Silvano swathed in Dennis Basso, picking at her artichoke salad. ‘’The first time I met Madonna was during Paris Fashion Week, the autumn of 1994. We bought the entire Dior collection by John Galliano that season and flew straight to Budapest with that iconic first collection to film her music video for “Live to Tell.” Lori told me she always knew that she would end up working with Madonna. ‘’We were both two driven gals from the mid-west, both the same age and knew all the same people. It was only a matter of time that would meet.” Their collaboration for more than ten years is the stuff of legend. Omar Hernandez is the impresario of the moment and his 9th street salon between fifth and sixth avenues is the hottest new restaurant this city has seen in eons. You have got to check out Omar’s now! GW loves his Nello’s and his da Silvano and now his Omar’s! And I will be in touch! •

Cushnie et Ochs is a dynamic tandem from Carly Cushnie, a native Jamaican - a la GW, and Michelle Ochs, her partner from suburban Maryland. They are the modern masters of American minimalism. Think Calvin Klein back when Calvin Klein was setting his glamorous classic signature. For GW -Cushnie et Ochs is the new Calvin Klein. It’s modern, austere and simply beautiful clothing -- sleek and ever so chic. Cushnie et Ochs will win the next year 2014 CFDA award - one of them has their name on it -- that GW will guarantee.

While his profile is certainly large enough to warrant a cover, he isn’t the typical personality that we feature. However, there is one thing he is, and that is hot; he knows everything that is relevant and on trend, and this being the HOT edition we couldn’t think of anyone better to work with on this story. Our exclusive photo shoot—generously shot by Getty Images with space provided by B& Co., a new restaurant/lounge—and interview that I conducted was not my first encounter with this internationally recognized reality TV star. In fact, three weeks prior, I had lunch with both him and Ernie Anastos at the epicenter of all things New York media: Michael’s Restaurant. While the gathering illuminated his vivacious personality, wit and humor, it wasn’t until after the meal as we were walking the streets of the city that it became evident he is both vastly well-known and beloved by the young set. Whatever apprehensions I may have had putting him on the cover were assuaged when a group of twenty-somethings approached him and asked for his photo. I knew then that working with him was a big deal.

PROFILE When asked about what it means to be hot and how he has be on fire for so long, Jonathan responds, “The most important part of being hot is staying relevant. The people who you surround yourself with, the places you go, the cars you drive—it all plays a part. It’s vain, but it’s what you have to do.”

also a public relations maven who happened to be friends with Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie and others of that exclusive entourage as well. It is these experiences – his professional and personal lives combined – that have made him who he is today.

Jonathan is no wallflower. When told that he isn’t the typical Resident cover, he joked, “I think it’s great that you’re targeting a whole new demographic besides the old fakatas that live on the Upper East Side.” His publicist chimes in— after I say I can’t possibly put that quote in—that I must! It was a portent of fun times to come.

“I’ve been on Keeping Up with the Kardashians for five years as well as several Kardashian spinoffs, and also had my own show, The Spin Crowd,” Jonathan said, as he talked about his life in candor. “Everywhere I go people approach me and want to take a photo with me. I’m known in 150 countries.”

Known most famously for his close friendship with Kim Kardashian and the rest of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, Jonathan was

Jonathan always knows the hottest and newest places...no matter what city and especially NY —What Kim Kardashian has said about her friend Jonathan

When asked about how he met the infamous Kim, Jonathan pauses for a moment and says, “I met her at a birthday dinner; she was sitting next to me. I had already met Khloe and it was just a natural extension of the group I already knew. I’ve known all of these girls for almost 15 years.“ One of the most intriguing questions—and one that I’m sure is asked the most frequently to all reality stars—is whether or not reality TV is actually real or playacting. Jonathan answered the question with a certain straightforwardness that I wasn’t expecting.

because I like to make things more fun. But, it’s not acting like some people suggest,” he said. “It’s a lot of work – 16 hours a day for four months. There are a lot of outfit changes, a lot of talking and a lot of planning goes into making the show.” With the birth of Kim’s first child, North West, I asked if the dynamic of the show and their relationship had changed. “She’s been locked up at home, with the baby, until she is ready to go out into the craziness again— she’s enjoying her time,” he said. “For me, I’m bummed I don’t get to see her as much. other in multiple cities – LA, New York, Miami. By the time this interview comes out, we’ll see the new gorgeous, blonde Kim. I can’t wait.” Beyond just being professionally fabulous, Jonathan is a branding expert and entrepreneur with several new and innovative companies under his name. “I own a jewelry line called Rich Rocks,” he said, while gesturing to a cool skull bracelet indicative of the line. “I also own a company called Glam Screen, which is both a screen protector and mirror for smartphones. It’s doing very well.” Additionally, Jonathan is also an aspiring restaurateur. “I’m starting a burger franchise called Billionaire Burger. The first one will be in Long Island and I’m very excited about that project. Currently, I have a sushi restaurant that is set to open called Sushi Couture by Sushi Mikasa, which is the hotspot in Miami. I’m always running around.” Besides keeping up with the latest business in fashion, food and technology, Jonathan has also used talents in branding himself, as he is personally endorsed by Fuse Science, GaGa Ice Cream, and both Jaguar and the Warren Henry Auto Group. But Jonathan isn’t all work, as he makes time for his has many hobbies and projects he holds dear to his heart. “I love to travel. I was just in Europe last month filming a new show—which I can’t tell you about yet—and it will take place in Sardinia, St. Tropez and Monaco. That comes up in November, and I’m super excited. I’m also

filming the 9th season of Kardashians shortly.” Jonathan is the epitome of a trendsetting New Yorker. So, since he is the proclaimed king of hot, I had to press him: what’s a must try in the city? “B&Co. is opening and it’s going to be amazing. The Nomad area in Manhattan is insane; Harlow is an awesome restaurant. The SLS hotel is about to open as well. The most anticipated restaurant opening in the coming year is Zuma (out of London), and it will change the New York dining scene. I like to mix it up – go high-end and low.” It should be obvious, as it was for me, that Jonathan is a man of many memes; he loves creating subtext and interest in products, events, places, and other people whom he sees as a fit within his empire of chic and especially for himself. What also became apparent was Jonathan’s love of the city. He talked about the energy, the things to do and all of the culture permeating around every block of our thriving metropolis. It is in New York that Jonathan is most deeply understood, as he has evolved into a force that is synonymous with all that is now and on trend. I’m glad to report that we’ve become fast friends; we have plans to go back to Michael’s shortly and he has taken an interest in the magazine. We wish him the best of luck on all of his many endeavors. U

The World’s Best Spa:

Rancho la Puerta By Joe Alexander

ancho la Puerta is not only the oldest spa in North America, it is arguably the best. Located 45 miles from San Diego in pastoral Tecate, Mexico, it attracts Madonna, Governor Jerry Brown, Kate Winslet, Arianna Huffington, Claudia Schiffer, Bill Moyers, Alicia Silverstone, Erica Jong and Oprah Winfrey. Ricki Lake, who utilized the resort’s popular Bar Method classes to train for her appearance on Dancing with the Stars was at the resort in September getting in shape for a new project. Her weeklong schedule included classes in Pilates, yoga, Tai Chi and meditation. There are also art lessons and cooking classes by renowned visiting chefs. Edmond & Deborah Szekely founded Rancho la Puerta in 1940 and it was quickly discovered by Hollywood luminaries including Burt Lancaster, Kim Novak, Bill Holden and the writer Aldous Huxley. What began as a tiny camp built in the shadow of

historic Mt. Kuchumaa is now a luxurious, state of the art facility nestled amidst lush flora and vegetable gardens created by Deborah’s daughter, landscape designer Sarah Szekely Brightwood. The ranch’s fields of yellow black-eyed Susans, cactus patches, beds of white irises, orange lilies and red roses that line the winding brick paths, vineyards and koi ponds are breathtaking. Nicknamed “Rancho“ by the procession of returning guests, it limits itself to 140 people a week. It’s here, Deborah’s hoping to encourage the next generation of “health nuts”- a favorite descriptor for people like herself who “read labels, go to farmer’s markets, participate in a community garden or has a garden, and are active in taking responsibility for their own health.” Szekely is now an indefatigable and spritely 91-year-old example of healthy living. Deborah is a widely referred to as “The Mother of the Modern Spa Movement” and is one of the country’s leading wellness crusaders, “Delight in the little things in nature and in life—I think it’s hard to be truly healthy without that. Thinking out of the box, seeing, being aware and enjoying the little things, this is what is so important.”

Together the couple opened Rancho la Puerta, which today runs $3,000 a person per week; however their first summer health camp in 5FDBUF XBT NPSF IVNCMF‰ QFS XFFL and bring your own tent. “It was years before we could buy property and it was little by little by little that we assembled the land, she says of Rancho’s property that now spans 3,000 acres—2,000 of which can never be developed and includes the famed Mt. Kuchumaa, where Szekely’s late husband and son, Alex, are now buried. “When we got here, we heard some weird stories that it’s a sacred mountain and my husband said, ‘Oh, it’s just folklore,’ but after we’d been here a few years, they had a major pow-wow on the mountain and tribes came from all over the United States. I know that we’re here because we were meant to be here. I really believe that and the reason Rancho la Puerta is so successful is because we’re on the path that we’re supposed to be on.

Now in her ninth decade, Szekely is today setting up programs to ensure her mindful message lives on. Rancho La Puerta is now under the direction of her daughter, Sarah Livia Brightwood, and Szekely is building a Super PAC to further encourage wellness legislation and strengthen the current Farm Bill. (wellnesswarrior.org) “I want people in Congress to look at the alternatives before they make their decisions and where they lead to and what it’ll be like in 10 years, 20 years,â€? advises Szekely. “They’re making decisions for us that, for the moment, sound good. But then where are they going to go? I’m building for the future.â€? Yet with all her ambition and vigor, Szekely is realistic about that future. “I’m not going to say I’m going to do this for the next five or 10 years because I’m 91 and I’d be an idiot,â€? she laughs. “I’m trying to build something for the wellness people. I want the wellness establishment to have a voice.â€? •

An Entre Cielos spa attendant gently guides guests through two steam baths set at different temperatures, two exfoliation rooms, a temperature controlled swimming-pool, a hot stone relaxation rock, and an elective natural clay body mask to end the treatment circuit. The steam rooms evaporate stress and quiet the body into a deep state of relaxation. At the center of the spa lies the communal bathing pool and round heated rock designed to encourage reflection. TRAVEL ashion designers, jetsetters and aficionados of stunning nature are flocking to the Aeolian Islands, a volcanic archipelago located off the coast of northern Sicily. Jutting out of the Tyrrhenian Sea, these pearls of the Mediterranean are a Unesco World Heritage Site. The isles are named for Aeolus, the keeper of the winds in Greek mythology who mischievously blew Odysseus back to the island’s rocky shores when he tried to return home. Rustic and wild, they proffer sandy beaches, coves, grottos, sulphur springs, lush vegetation, lunar rock-scapes and fiery volcanoes. There’s something both primal

and mystical about these islands and their active volcanic terrain. Let’s not forget the Italian cuisine, shimmering Mediterranean, Sicilian sun and glamorous nightlife. Not surprising that the Aeolians are ‘in’. Each of the small islands has its own distinct charm and beauty. I recommend seeing as many as you can, if only for a short day trip by private boat or ferry.

rooms with large terraces and expansive outdoor spaces for unparalleled sea views throughout – plus a helicopter pad. The resort sits atop a promontory overlooking other islands and free standing rock formations, the faraglioni. Local materials such as lava rock from Mt. Etna, Sicilian terra cotta and olive wood give Therasia a natural feel.

My base for exploring the islands was Vulcano, the first stop on the ferry from Milazzo, Sicily. There’s a serene, unspoilt quality to the landscape where nature rules. The 5 star Therasia Resort and Spa, my lovely oasis, offers a striking lobby, stylish

Mornings, I loved swimming up to the infinity edge of the huge pool to take in the spectacular vista. Afternoons were spent lolling on lounges that faced the sea with a cooling breeze. Stairs led down to the blue Mediterranean for those wanting a lovely swim, which I took quite often. Adjacent were lounges for guests desiring closest proximity to the water, or you might want to sunbathe on a rock. For pampering the spa offered rejuvenating treatments with local products such as a scrub with volcanic black sand from the islands beaches. Did I mention the outdoor Jacuzzi and nature trails? Many options in paradise. Hotel shuttles take guests to nearby beaches - but who wanted to leave. One of the things I love most about Italy is the food and Therasia did not disappoint. For me, dining alfresco on delectable spaghetti with urchin, linguine with clams, freshly grilled fish and pizza with buffalo mozzarella was la dolce vita. At sunset, the fashionable guests gathered on the veranda to toast the last golden rays with prosecco while a combo played cool

jazz. Also memorable was a private boat ride around the island, arranged by the hotel. Seeing Vulcano from the sea, the inlets and coves and rock formations in shapes that look like animals, seeing nature in all its majesty, was unforgettable. A highlight was a visit to Vulcano’s famed thermal mud bath reputed for therapeutic powers to alleviate skin ailments, digestion, inflammation, circulation and even cellulite. Be forewarned – it smells of sulphurous gasses. I can attest that my skin felt and looked softer and revitalized after just one treatment. Afterwards, I strolled the 3 blocks near the port, the island’s only town, passing shops with Indian and Indonesian artifacts and eclectic jewelry. Looking in the window of the Gecko Café, (that nightly transforms into the swinging hotspot) a scrumptious cannoli called out to me. I sat outside and indulged in the tasty sweet and an espresso, under the glow of the Sicilian sun. Therasia Resort and Spa therasiaresort.it

Panarea, the smallest of the chain, is the chicest with its white washed villas draped in bougainvillea, narrow lanes and one of the best nightclubs in Italy. Georgio Armani has a villa here, as do the Bulgaris, Viscontis and Princess Borghese. Sip an aperitivo at Bar del Porto near the port and glimpse yachts bringing in the fabulous. After dining at Bridge Sushi Bar, the pedigreed and jetsetters head to the dance party on famed Hotel Raya’s terrace. Lipari, the largest and most populous, with a bustling main town is worth a visit for the fortified acropolis and Archaeological Museum. The impressive collection of Neolithic vases, Roman amphorae and extraordinary theatrical masks and statuettes from the cult of Dionysius demonstrate how these remote islands were indeed a cultural and commercial center in ancient times. Salina, the lush, mountainous island, is known for its sweet Malvasia wine, capers and picturesque landscape. Massimo Troisi was so enchanted with this idyllic place that he filmed

Stromboli, remote and dramatic, is a favorite of designers Dolce & Gabanna, who own a villa and yacht there. Travelers come from afar to hike its spectacular volcano and explore its rugged beauty. Savor a pizza fantastica and chat with locals at Bar Ingrid on the central piazza. The café is named after Ingrid Bergman who carried on her torrid affair with Roberto Rossellini while filming ‘Stromboli’ on the island. When darkness falls, the main event is ‘volcano watching’. The best viewing is from a boat. Every twenty minutes a deep rumble signals a shower of crimson sparks lighting the

sky as the molten lava shoots up. Witnessing the hot red fire and billowy smoke of creation with each seismic eruption was spellbinding.

Whether its taking in the glorious New England fall foliage, or taking in some Indian summer sunshine in Florida, in just a few short hours by plane or car, you can be transported into a different world for a fraction of the price of summer travel making the best time of the year to travel.

Canyon Ranch

Nothing can rival the beautiful New England Fall foliage that extends from the Hudson Valley through the Berkshires. October is the prime month to experience this annual treat before Winter. A lovely drive to the Berkshires, the Canyon Ranch Health Resort and Spa located in Lenox, MA is the perfect all inclusive haven to recharge and revitalize the senses while improving your well being for life. Whether you are looking for medical treatment, r&r, weight loss, or a spirtual cleanse, there are no shortage of activities to keep your day full, choose from over 40 fitness classes in their state of the art gym, world class spa treatments, health and wellness classes with Eastern and Western medical specialists, as well as metaphysical experts that can tailor individual programs to keep you on a healthy life changing track. Led by Richard Carmona who was the 17th Surgeon General of the US as well as Mark Liponis MD, the Integrative Health Center offers a full diagnostic evaluation and preventative programs for issues such as metabolic disorders, diabetes,

cardivascular disease, sleep disorders and genomics. One of the most interesting lectures is their Hunter Farmer Diet Solution led by Liponis that dispels other fad diets by helping you to identify your metabolism type so you can eat the right foods for your body type to keep the weight off and prevent health issues in the future. While the impression of spa cuisine tends to conjure thoughts of bland, food befitting of a rabbit, the Chef de cuisine whips up a delectable award winning farm to table menu that is low in calories, big on taste, and delivers the perfect balance of carbs, fiber, and protein. Choose from dining in the formal dining room in the stately Bellefontaine Mansion, or take in a casual alfresco lunch at the Cafe Jardin, interact with the chef at the Demonstration Kitchen, or enjoy the international fare at the Cafe Tasse. Enjoy the New England scenery from the luxuriously appointed rooms overlooking the beautifully manicured grounds. Decorated in a classic New England style, no detail has been spared with everything from the soft Mascioni Italian

sheets to imported Italian toiletries. The world class spa is what put Canyon Ranch on the map. With every package, there is a daily allowance that can afford a relaxing and indulgent treatment everyday. Choose from their signature stone massage to their candle lit Euphoria treatment, restorative massages, a hydrating facial, ayurvedic treatment, or body wraps and scrubs, everything is designed to melt the stress away. During the month of October, Canyon Ranch offers a number of packages including the He Stays Free, so bring your favorite guy and book a weekend package at the single occupancy rate. Hillside Schoolhouse Just 90 miles Northwest of the city, in one of the charming historic towns dotting the Catskills region, is the Hillside Schoolhouse in Sullivan County. Originally built as a one room school, the landmark building also had a previous incarnation as a gospel chapel until it was lovingly restored by Bronson and Courtney Bigelow. The boutique inn combines historic charm and contemporary design that pays homage to the past by keeping original details such as the windows, hardwoods and chalkboards, as well as antique furnishings and sumptuous sofas that provide a communal area.

Traveler’s Guide to the 21 s t An n u a l H a m p t o ns International Film Festival

Among the films premiering at this year’s Hamptons International Film Festival is Anthony Fabian’s Louder than Words, based on the inspiring true story of John and Brenda Fareri, who found solace after the death of their young daughter Maria, by building the world class Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center. David Duchovny (“Californication,” “The X Files”) and Hope Davis (“The Newsroom,” “American Splendor,” “About Schmidt”) star as John and Brenda Fareri, with new-comer Olivia Steele Falconer playing the role of Maria Fareri and Timothy Hutton (“Leverage,” “The Ghost Writer”) playing Bruce Komiske, who helps the family in their long, emotional journey to obtain funding for the planning and building of the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital. The film was produced by Anthony Mastromauro’s Identity Films.

By Christopher A. Pape he 21st Annual Hamptons International Film Festival takes place Thursday, October 10, 2013 through Monday, October 14, 2013 and will showcase some of the hottest movies this fall, many of which made their big screen debuts earlier this year at the Cannes and Toronto Film Festivals.

Fabian’s real life drama is just one of many films that will be showcased at the film festival this year. Kill Your Darlings starring Daniel Radcliffe as Allen Ginsberg, Jack Huston as Jack Kerouac, Ben Foster as William Burroughs and Elizabeth Olsen as Edie Parker, will be the Opening Night Film at Guild Hall in East Hampton on Thursday, October 10, 2013. Based on true events, Kill Your Darlings recounts 1944, the pivotal year that brought together the great poets of the beat generation, changed Allen Ginsberg’s life forever and provided the impetus for his creative revolution. The Sony Pictures Classics film will open in theaters October 16, 2013.

Alexander Payne’s Nebraska, starring Academy Award nominee Bruce Dern and Saturday Night Live veteran Will Forte, is the Festival’s Sunday Centerpiece Film. Shot in black and white across four states, this Oscar contender explores family life in the heartland of America while underscoring the importance of dreams. Paramount Vantage will be releasing the film on November 22, 2013. An early favorite for the upcoming awards season, 12 Years a Slave will be the Hamptons International Film Festival’s Closing Night

t Resident October 2013

Film premiering Monday evening. 12 Years a Slave stars Chiwetel Ejofor as Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York who is abducted and sold into slavery in pre-Civil War era United States. Produced by Brad Pitt and directed by Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave is based on Northup’s highly influential autobiography of the same name, and features an outstanding cast. Since its debut at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, the film has received fantastic Oscar buzz.

Last year’s Hamptons International Film Festival entries, including Argo, Silver Linings Playbook, and Searching for Sugarman, went on to win a total of seven Academy Awards. For those attending the Hamptons International Film Festival, October offers a second chance to enjoy the Hamptons’ best hotels and restaurants. These year-round hotspots are sure to make your entire visit to the Hamptons International Film Festival as impressive as the film selection. Pape edding may not be the most exciting purchase you can make; think of all of those exotic cars, delicious dinners or luxury trips you can take instead. Yet, for one’s health there are few things that can compare. I speak from experience when I say that sleeping the wrong way or with pillows/comforters that cause allegories is not pleasant. Halloween The Best Holiday and Free Dessert for the Year By Dr. Jo Webber

don’t know about you - but the favorite holiday in my family is Halloween. Both my children are under ten and this may be why. It’s also one of the least expensive holidays for us as a family. We pick out the Halloween outfits and pickup some candy for any visitors we may get – but that’s about it. Knocking on people’s doors and receiving free candy is just about the most exciting thing a child can do. They get rewarded for having fun and just being kids, not a bad deal. Last year we picked up so much candy – that it’s going to stretch all the way to this year’s Halloween. You see we let them collect the candy, sort the candy, count the candy – but not actually eat the candy. Well, at least not in one sitting. They have enough energy as it is. So several times a week throughout the year we allow them to select one piece of candy per night for dessert from their Halloween bags. Over the year they have seen how just a

little restraint and planning can make Halloween fun last all year long. Sometimes they even get into a discussion about what candy they will eat tonight and how they will save special candy for when their friend comes over. When they started to negotiate mutually beneficial trades I began to wonder how creative they would get. For the young, it’s a great way to introduce the concept of savings and smart “spending” (“You can either eat all your candy now, but then you won’t be able to enjoy it any more for the rest of the year OR you can eat a little now and save some for later to get more enjoyment all year…”). As their stashes are now getting depleted they are very excited about the upcoming replenishment that will happen. Maybe this ZFBS XF DBO FWFO UBML BCPVU EPOBUJOH TPNF DBOEZyΉt

FAMILY

A PARENT’S A – B – C GUIDE FOR BULLYING By Joseph R. Taravella, Ph. D. n recent years, research and media coverage indicate that bullying is on the rise among our children. Statistics indicate that seventy-even percent of students admit to being the victim of one type of bullying or another. Hence, it is important we play a role in preventing bullying, so let’s start in our own home. A – Help children understand what bullying is. Children often do not reveal acts of bullying to their parents. Thus, parents need to educate themselves on bullying, and ways to address it and tackle it. Recognize changes in your child, teach them coping strategies, keep a record of incidences, and let your child know they are not alone. Both the victim and the bully may need professional counseling, as they are both suffering. B – Be a role model of how treat others. A parent is a child’s first teacher, so be mindful of how you treat others. Lead by example and promote healthy and respectful communication in your home. Your child is listening to your verbal and nonverbal communication, so steer away from gossip and negative remarks. C – Communicate! Create that “safe spot” in your home where children feel safe communicating their thoughts and feelings with you. Always make time to listen and reflect back what they are saving to you so they feel understood. Let them know you are on their side no matter what!! Providing a comfortable forum to communicate at home will facilitate better communication with authorities at school. D – Encourage your children to seek help from school. Don’t ignore the problem - be proactive when there is an initial problem. You and your child should speak to as many adults until something is done. Encourage your child to speak with authorities at school and meet with school officials to learn about your school’s policy on bullying. Have your child be a part of, or start up an anti-bullying program at school. Do not be a bystander - you can support the victim and feel proud you are doing something right by others. E – Encourage kids to promote what they love. Continue to cultivate your child’s life skills by promoting self-esteem and confidence by engaging in activities they love. Teach restraint – to think before they act. Foster social skills, good hygiene, respect for others and themselves, empathy toward others, and how to cope with rejection and disappointment. Teach assertiveness – not aggressiveness, and keep them involved in activities and sports so they are part of a team. It takes a team of youth, parents, educators, counselors, law enforcement, and social media companies to make a difference. Be part of the change for your family, so your children feel safe with every step they take. •

FIVE

WAYS TO EMPOWER YOUR KIDS THIS SCHOOL YEAR Empowerment and Business Expert Entrepreneur, Author & Mom Jen Groover, Shares Her Tips for Raising Happy, Healthy, Empowered Children in New York City he world children grow up in today is vastly different than the one many of us remember from our own childhoods – especially in New York City. As parents today, we want more for our children than just academic and career success, we want them to believe in themselves, lead positive, purposeful, rewarding lives and grow to become the best possible version of themselves. However, with their schedules jam packed with extracurricular activities, technology at their fingertips and a whole new breed of school bully, it is easy for a child living in New York City to feel powerless in their own life. It’s more important now than ever to empower children by giving them the tools they need to develop their own identity and the personal strength to achieve their goals and become their own role models for positive living.

t Resident October 2013

1

Starting from a young age, it is important to ingrain in your child that the things that make them different from others are their greatest assets. Encourage them to take pride in their individuality and continue to reinforce this idea as they get older so that they learn to celebrate the unique qualities in themselves and in others, instead of losing self-esteem. Positively reinforce the behaviors that they display that demonstrate them being true to their authentic being. Discuss topics like authenticity and being truthful to who you are to create an awareness and language around those topics early on so that the can truly embrace their authentic power as they get older and bullying will affect them less or they many dispel it altogether.

2

CREATE A DRAMA FREE ZONE Children learn what is acceptable in society and what is not by observing the behaviors, actions and reactions of others. Set an example for your child by surrounding yourself with positive people and engaging in activities that give you energy, while avoiding people, activities and foods that drain your energy or negatively upset the balance in your life. Teaching your child the difference between positive and negative behavior early on creates an advantage by helping them identify positive and negative influences in their life as they get older. This allows the child to develop awareness and creatively establish boundaries that keep positive energy and intention in their life and keep drama out so that they can reach their greatest potential.

TALK ABOUT ONLINE SAFETY

3

Technology can be a powerful learning tool for your child, however it can also be a window for bullies and predators to enter their life. As a parent, to protect your child you must be aware of all the ways your child is engaging with technology and monitor their communication with others on an ongoing and daily basis. Discuss safety issues and proper uses of technology to encourage more productive experiences. Most parents are vigilant at first, but they often get too comfortable with their child’s use of technology as time goes on, leaving their child vulnerable. While your child may not be causing any issues themselves, others may be infiltrating their online space. By teaching your child why they should not share photos of themselves online or why they should keep their location services turned off, you will not only protect your child, but also empower them to use technology safely to explore the possibilities of the digital world.

ADDRESS OVERBOOKED SCHEDULES

5

4

Make sure your kid has time to just be a kid. Respect your child’s need for down time in between or after a jam packed day of activities by building it into their daily routine. Encourage activities that allow your child to decompress – whether it’s free play, yoga, meditation or just taking a break from technology. This will teach your child to set aside that same type of time for themself when they start to manage their own schedule and will better equip them to handle stress as they get older. Also, discuss the importance of quality sleep for energy, passion and mental clarity to achieve their goals.

TEACH WITH POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT Focusing on your child’s positive behaviors and achievements and rewarding them with praise often breeds more positive behaviors and empowers them to make better choices while building their self-esteem. Reprimanding your child for negative behaviors may reduce negative behaviors, however it does not increase positive behaviors and can be damaging to the child’s developing sense of inner confidence and strength. Serving as a mirror to reflect your child’s positive actions, abilities and qualities helps them to see themself as valuable, talented and capable individuals. The way you teach your child to behave positively also sets an example for your child to teach their peers to treat them with respect and kindness. And always keep in mind your actions speak louder than your words. You are their role model. How you speak to and treat others is usually replicated. •

Excellent for people-watching and socialite spottings, especially during lunchtime with its small but lovely outdoor seating area, it’s a prime location with an upscale vibe, set along the city’s most exclusive boutiques. Indulge in the decadent and extravagantly priced truffle pasta special or order the Veneziana, a kosher calf ’s liver seared in balsamic nectar and caramelized onions, the Chilean Sea Bass “Ossobuco” cooked in a lobster saffron veloute is equally delectable. While enjoying your meal be sure to admire the amazing selection of Peter Beard photography that adorn the walls. Owner Nello Balan has created a classic space of fine dining, glamour and elegance from his classic yet chicly decorated interior to his fine tuned menu.

Rye This New American addition to the Williamsburg culinary scene has become a neighborhood favorite pleasing locals and Manhattanites alike. Inspired by the early twentieth century, owner and Chef Cal Elliott offers high quality dishes in an atmosphere reminiscent of a speakeasy. Its antique yet chic décor imparts a casual elegance. Before dinner enjoy one of their vintage cocktails at the impressive 21-foot mahogany bar, bringing you back to the days of pre-Prohibition pubs. Rye’s fine dining experience offers something for everyone, from their comforting Mac & Cheese to the Long Island duck with Moroccan style couscous, leaving patrons savoring the rich flavors and carefully prepared dishes.

Inspired by the understated yachting glamour of the isle of Capri, the breezy décor features white walls accented by dark blue and chrome accents with signature seafood dishes reminiscent of the region such as calamari, octopus, red mullet and grilled mussels served with garlic, thyme and extra virgin olive oil. Spigola Dell’Atlantico, and a Chilean sea bass with zucchini, onions, and tomatoes in a Vinsato Sauce. Adding to the Italian authenticit, all of the fresh pasta is house made, such as Tortelloni with Truffle cream sauce, while the dry pastas are exclusively imported from Cercola (Naples), Italy. Casa Pomona A perennial neighborhood favorite on the Upper West Side, Casa Pomona just recently reopened with chef Don Flores at the helm who has created an array of authentic Spanish tapas that offer a wide variety of flavors through affordable small plates. Created by seasoned restaurateurs Sid Gupta and Marion Maur, the name embodies the inspiration for their labor of love. Casa signifies the warm and inviting atmosphere of welcoming guests to their home and Pomona was etched into the limestone of the building façade. The Barcelona inspired interior glows in warm shades of siena and terracotta that is enveloped by a colorful mural created by Spanish artist Eduardo Anievas who depicted a contemporary version of Spain’s gorgeous landscape and rolling hills. Tempt the tastebuds with signature dishes such as Signature dishes will include Albondigas, a traditional savory meatball; Fideua, a paella featuring fideos noodles from Valencia; Suckling Pig; and numerous traditional preparations of vegetables including beets and calcots, a Catalonian green onion, as well as the classic Catalan seafood paella, all created from ingredient sourced from local Hudson Valley farms and purveyors. to follow directions. To make sure the person is trustworthy, we do a simple background check. It’s essential to trust your employees, especially since they will be sent to apartments unsupervised at times. A person is hired on a trial basis before he/she becomes full-time. Resident: Can you tell us about the toughest job that has ever come your way? Pauline: In my experience, cleaning an apartment at the end of a tenancy is a nightmare–especially when students have been sharing the apartment!

Resident: What’s your favorite do-it-yourself cleaning tip? Pauline: White vinegar is very effective with dissolving grease and soap layers from smooth surfaces in the kitchens and bathrooms. Because it is non-toxic, vinegar is safe to use on hardwood floors. Mix 1/4 to 1/2 cup of vinegar with water in a bucket and feel free to clean anything from windows and mirrors to toilets and floors. For tougher jobs, undiluted vinegar will do the trick. MODERN LINES

By Kate Bidinger

ven if you’re not a modern furniture enthusiast, there’s no denying it: these pieces are rad. In fact, it’s believed that seeing certain lines, angles, proportions, and mathematical forms are how we determine beauty. This “Golden Ratio” is found in nature, artwork, architecture, our bodies, outer space... the examples continue to, well, infinity. Ok, enough of the arithmetic lesson, let’s get to more scholarly activities, like furniture shopping. About Tamara Tamara Magel’s work is infused by an inspired world-view of “weaving culturesâ€? – reinterpreting heritages and local traditions into an exotic tapestry of design. Her lifestyle brand is one that is “at home in the worldâ€? and reflects a stylish and easy approach to living well. She has a love for using exceptional textiles and materials from around the world – such as organically dyed yarns, knits, macramĂŠ and beads – to bleached woods and natural stone. The interplay of inspired textures, colors, natural materials and clean lines define her distinctive, comfortable style. Tamara has the utmost respect for the environment and tries to utilize the cleanest approach for materials when launching her products. One of Tamara’s long-term goals is to assist in enabling women in developing countries to create better lives for themselves and their communities. Tamara started her own interior design business eleven years ago in Washington, DC. Since then, she has been featured in Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, The New York Times and Lonny magazines, among others. In 2011, she opened a showroom in New York’s Soho, to showcase her furniture, paint and bedding collections and will now be launching in the Hamptons.

T

his living space was designed with two thoughts in mind, to juxtapose various hues of black and white without it being so literal and to create depth. The wall-unit created exclusively in the Tamara Magel furniture shop is a bleached oak that keeps an airy, open space in this sun-filled room. For a deeper aesthetic, the metal shelves monochromatically contrast the light oak; incorporating an outlet for decor without subtracting space and substituting the requirement of hanging wall art.

The lamb wool cover on the metal-framed, wood-sleighed rocking chair alongside the iron light fixture pulls out the usage of the element in the wall unit. The rustic/contemporary relationship is brought forth through the variety of organic, natural elements throughout the room. You will find the largest space of color in the very monochromatic room is the steel-blue and turquoise tones in the printed area rug. Music for a New Age By Christopher A. Pape Of all the things I know, cool and trendy music isn’t one of them. And since this is the HOT edition, we’ve enlisted the help of someone who does, Evan Zampellla, owner and founder of Super Duper Records. Evan sat down with us to discuss his company, the artists he represents and how to stay on trend - especially in a world that is constantly evolving.

Evan’s philosophy on music, “Jon is an indie singer-songwriter with a bit of a pop flair. We just wrapped on a music video with him and Janice Dickinson (the famed 70’s supermodel). We’re getting great press from their collaboration and Jon is set to be the next pop singer-songwriter to take off – a la John Mayer, Jason Mraz, etc. I’m excited for the video’s release in early October.

When asked about the evolution of starting a new record label, he answers: “In high school, I worked at record labels like Island Def Jams and some other boutique firms. I always wanted to work behind the scenes in music.” After following a more practical route of law school, he quit after a year to pursue his love for music: “Law is one of my passions, but after the first year I got a wonderful job offer at an entertainment law firm and decided to start my own label at the same time.”

Asked to describe the label, he states: “The company is a small, independent, completely digital record label. I never wanted to have CDs or records sold at a store.” It just so happens that both of the artists he has signed – Shake the Baron and Jonathan Sandler - love this model and thus they are a perfect fit for each other.

In 2010 he launched his all-digital company and says now, after three years, that he’s getting some traction. He attributes this good luck to one his main stars, Jon Sandler. The singer-songwriter fits perfectly with

t Resident October 2013

After perusing both Mr. Zampella’s and Mr. Sandler’s sites, there is obviously much synergy and in fact Evan can attest to this, “I like to keep everything in the family. Shake the Baron are friends from college. And Jon went to his high school senior prom with my sister. All of my artists are friends; I love keeping everything in the family.”

Another attribute of his success is his relaxed attitude towards business. This isn’t to suggest that he doesn’t care or isn’t serious, just that he stays calm in pressured situations. He says, “I have a very laidback attitude towards business. People will criticize and say that it won’t get me far. But for me it works and I’m a success. I prefer to do things very relaxed, at my own pace; it works when you’re representing friends. I don’t follow a normal business model, but it’s worked out well for me.” As for the future, Evan is bullish: “I plan on working with this up-and-coming director, Nick Heller, who actually shot Jon and Janice’s music video. In addition to producing music, I want to take Super Duper Records to an online content house. We’re going to be creating programming; we have this new series about to premier called – No Your City. We’re starting in New York and plan on finding unique characters and individuals that represent their towns.” We wish Evan and Super Duper Records the best of luck. •

ichael McGrail, the co-owner of the G Lounge on West 19th Street and Here Lounge in Los Angeles, didn’t set out to be a bi-coastal nightlife entrepreneur. Born and raised in a large Irish family in Yonkers, McGrail began working in local restaurants learning from the bottom up. He decided to pursue his passion for food at the Culinary Institute of America; after graduating he began working in the kitchen at the Waldorf Astoria. Eventually he went to work as a manager at Rogers & Barbero, a Restaurant in Chelsea. In 1990 McGrail, with the support of his mentor John Carey, decided to open his own eatery and purchased Riccos in Hoboken, New Jersey. Although he had a successful six-year run, by the second year he knew he wanted to be back in Manhattan. He reached out to Pat Rogers and Roberto Barbero, who had since opened the ultra successful Food Bar. Together they decided to open a small venue and knew exactly what they wanted and where,

not too big, around 4,000 square ft and it had to be located between 7th & 8th Avenues and 16th and 23rd Streets. “I had worked in hotels and they always had nice lounges,” explained McGrail. “At that time no one had invested in a quality environment for the gay community.” It took them two and a half years to find the former iron works commercial space, and they signed a 20-year lease in 1996. Opened in 1997 during the height of the Chelsea Boy craze, G Lounge was an immediate hit. The bar’s design was a departure from the dark, dingy gay bars of years past. “I wanted a bar I could be proud of and a place that was clean and comfortable.” G Lounge has stood the test of time, remaining both a local favorite and destination location. Olympic figure skating champion Johnny Weir hosted the lounge’s 16th birthday party in September. “We have a great staff, music and DJs and people have been coming here for years.” Said McGrail. Many celebrities

have enjoyed the comforts of G Lounge, including Parker Posey, Alan Cumming, Adam Lambert, Valerie Harper, Ian McKellen and the late Quentin Crisp. After a close friend Eric Pietrangolare introduced McGrail to painter David Paul Kay, known for his Neo Cubisim style, he brought the artist on board and let him loose on G Lounge “I’ve always loved street art and so we decided to let Kay canvas the entire space. It took him a month, five hours a day, both during the day and at night with customers watching. It started a real buzz and it spread by word of mouth. Our motto is we can’t control what everyone else does, but we can do the best we can do, which includes having the best prices, customer service, and a staff who are welcoming, professional and like coming to work!” Concluded McGrail. • glounge.com

Hedy Klineman Buddhas in the Garden By Rachel Reda

edy Klineman’s artistic career spans four decades. She began painting in the 1970s; in the 80s, Hedy created fashion portraits, using the faces of celebrities along with their clothing to create mixed-media images. When her friend Andy Warhol passed away, Hedy made 100 silkscreen prints from a pair of his glasses that he gave her. “Andy and I had a special connection,” confided Hedy. Growing up in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Hedy immersed herself in various cultures that further inspired her creative edge. In high school, she spent her free time visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. “Back then, the museums were practically empty,” said Hedy. “I was able to fully absorb the atmosphere and its raw energy.” In the 1990s, Hedy moved on from her fashion portraits and embarked on a spiritual journey. Her artwork shifted its focus to different cultural deities such as Quan Yin,

t Resident October 2013

Ganesh and the Dalai Lama. She layered religious imagery over textured backgrounds as a form of spiritual creative expression. Shortly thereafter, Hedy started to take yoga classes in Southampton where she developed a powerful connection to the Buddha, and would use the figure repeatedly in her artwork from that point forward. “Learning from the past is important in understanding the present and creating the future,” said Hedy. “I would make silk screens of the Buddha to portray the reality of cultural ancestry, and then moved on to paintings.” The inspiration for her recent collection titled “Buddhas in the Garden,” stems from both her real garden and her “fantasy” garden. “In the garden, my mind clears and I achieve peace,” she said. “In nature, I am grounded.” This visual mantra delivers the repetitive, meditative presence that Hedy utilizes in her artwork. The Tibet House Museum at 22 W. 15th St. will

exhibit these paintings from October 4th to December 18th. Hedy is now focusing on African culture. She has created silk screens that blend African portraits with tribal masks. “Most of the subjects I use are people in my life, people I know,” said Hedy. Her most recent work uses the face of Russell Simmons, who is also a Buddhist and she is working on a portrait of the American Ambassador to Barbados. After she completes this series, Hedy plans to take a new approach and use animals as her primary subject. “Animals represent fierce spirits that will destroy your demons.” Hedy does not approach her work solely on a conscious level, her pieces come together as a portrayal of spiritual awareness. She says, “I want my audience to take my love and make it theirs.” tibethouse.org

PROFILE ctober 30th is a red letter day for 20-year-old American Ballet Theatre ballerina Skylar Brandt, who will be performing at the ABT Opening Gala before ”dancing” across town to receive her 2013 Princess Grace Award at Cipriani 42nd Street. “I’m hoping that after performing in the gala that I can change and hop in a cab to the Princess Grace Awards,” says Brandt. “But my duty as a dancer with ABT is to perform. That’s my job. If I can make it to the awards, that would be the cherry on top of my night. If not, I’ll be there in spirit.” Among her heroes are dance icons Alessandra Ferri, Marcelo Gomes and Julie Kent, who first inspired her to become an ABT ballerina.

Skylar was first nominated for the Princess Grace Award at the age of fourteen and now, six years later, she has fulfilled her dream of winning the coveted Dance Fellowship. “When I was first nominated, of course not winning was a bit of a disappointment. So it added pressure this year as a second chance.” Brandt recalls. The Princess Grace Award is one of four Dance Fellowships given to emerging young dancers. Brandt, who is the only classical ballerina in the group, will receive her award in the presence of HSH Princess Charlene of Monaco. “It was clearly important to me that I receive it,” Brandt admits. “I was just ecstatic that I had been able to do it the second time around.” Dancing at home since she was three, Brandt developed a serious passion for ballet at age eight after watching an ABT performance. “Everything from the costumes and the music to the story, it all inspired me so much,” she remembers. Brandt attended the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School before going on to apprentice at ABT in 2010. In June 2011, she was invited to join the ABT corps de ballet. “It is something I knew I definitely wanted to strive for in hopes of achieving my greatest dream, becoming a principal dancer at ABT.”

In 2004 and 2008, she won the silver medal in the Youth America Grand Prix, an international competition where dance students compete for prizes and scholarships. “It’s wonderful winning the silver medal at a competition such as YAGP because everyone from the dance world comes to it,” says Brandt. “It’s amazing to have made it that far.” In her down time, Brandt enjoys reading, going out with friends, watching Family Guy and playing with her Australian Silky, Wylie. She also mentors young dancers who aspire to follow in her footsteps. “Everyone has a different journey and not everyone has the same ability or opportunities,” Brandt says. “The one piece of advice I give to young dancers is to make sure that they enjoy their journey, whatever it is.” • abt.org/dancers
