Another wonderful interview was with Shohreh Aghdashloo, the multi-faceted and talented Iranian actress of House of Sand and Fog fame. She sat down with Anna Ryan and me at a local café to discuss her

Jill Rappaport, the award-winning Animal Advocate and Correspondent at NBC’s The Today Show and Nightly News, started her luminous career in journalism over two decades ago on the West Coast as an “entertainment reporter.” She says (only half-jokingly) “I went from the red carpet to the wee wee pad.”

Moved that Jack’s journey was as meaningful to her viewers as it was to her, she went to her boss and said: “You know, stars don’t need my help. Animals do. I want to change my job.” Jill realized what a risk this was, stating: “Let’s be honest, it’s not like I’m 20, 30, or even 40 years old at that point, it’s a risky thing to totally make a career change. But to me this wasn’t about career, this was a life change. It’s like oxygen for me.” Since then, Jill has been Today’s award-winning Animal Advocate, corralling her colleagues for the cause as well as inspiring people worldwide. And it is through Today that Jill has gained the platform for her cause; she raves: “I can’t believe I am blessed enough to be able to shine a light on these animals because it’s what I live for.” One of her most popular segments on the show, Bow To Wow, boasts a 100% success rate in terms of placing adopted cats and dogs into new homes. It is clear that rescuing animals makes Jill as happy as it makes them when she tells us: “Animals know they have been rescued. They thank you everyday for it. But, I always say that I’m the one who has been rescued.” Her colleagues at NBC are like a family supporting her mission; she in turn is overjoyed to have helped place adopted animals into their homes. In fact, she was instrumental in helping Al Roker and his
Line Animal Rescue. Jill showed up at the family’s home with the adorable black and white dog, Roker gushed about Jill at a Petco event supporting her new line Jill Rappaport’s Rescued Me Collection: “I’ve known Jill through The Today Show Jill is the ambassador for pet rescue. There is no question about it.” The undeniable bond that she feels for all animals drives her everyday. A mother once said to her: “I know you always refer to yourself as the mother to your pets, but it’s not the same as having children.” Jill responded: “I don’t have any biological children; to me, my animals are my children. I don’t know how else you would describe them. I love them, I care for them, I worry about them. I make sure they stay healthy and have the best lives in the world. Isn’t that what all mothers should do and could do?” And that’s what Jill’s new line at Petco is all about — Jill Rappaport’s Rescued Me Collection supports various charities such as the Humane Society of the United States and Tails of Hope, of which Jack is the Ambassadog of Hope for Animal Cancer. She gushes: “I’m so proud of the line because it’s born and made in the United States by Yellow Dog Design, which was very important to me. They tout mindful and
clever messages that support rescue and adoption.” We would be remiss to go without mention of Jill’s jewelry line, Hannah’s Heart, an equestrian collection crafted in memory of her beloved mare. Jill and the line support ASPCA. She designed it exclusively for London Jewelers. Her work has been recognized numerous times and she is the Good Will Equine Welfare Ambassador for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). She has received two Genesis Awards, the Oscars of the animal world, Voice for the Animals Award from HSUS. Mainly though, such recognition is purely a means for her to encourage others to reach out and help the animal community. She stresses the importance of the foster and volunteer programs: “Anything you can do to get into a shelter to donate your time is helpful—they desperately need it everywhere. I am very concerned that all the money we raise goes right back to them whether it’s for better cages, better food, better beds, better toys, care, or volunteers. If an animal is in a cage, which is terrifying enough, and it hasn’t been walked or cared for and given affection on a regular basis, it’s understandable that it’s not going to be waiting with wagging tail and hopeful eyes to get your attention. Regular loving human interaction is key to getting these animals out of these cages and adopted.”

And it is from her farm in the Hamptons, The Last Buck Ranch, that Jill tirelessly works on projects to further these causes — imbibing the natural inspiration dogs and seven horses. Jill started coming to the Hamptons in the 80s —staying in the classic share house with seven friends. When we ask her what it is about the Hamptons that she loves, she speaks of the proximity to nature: “You drive there’s the bay. Or, you can come to my ranch and feel like you’re in Utah or Montana with 60-foot pine trees. I have log cabins and horses –there’s a big horse community here. It’s really incredible. On any given day you’ll see a family of turkeys going across my lawn; there will be deer literally right up to my porch. And to think that we are two hours out of Manhattan — does it get any better than this?” Jill is truly a country girl at heart. It is inspiring to see her walk, talk and breathe her passion and purpose here on The Last Buck Ranch in the Hamptons. Jill is a fan of the Southampton Animal Shelter and will be honored at its Fourth Annual Unconditional Love Dinner Dance Gala, the shelter’s biggest fundraiser of the year. The shelter focuses on caring for the homeless animals of twenty-two different towns and rescues dogs from “kill shelters” across the country. By Hillary Latos Every year the Cannes Film Festival and the of passage for the international jet set; the festival serves as a transition from spring to summer and attracts Hollywood royalty and actual royalty alike, movie moguls and titans of industry, and playboys and aspiring starlets. They all converge in the South of France for a 10-day whirlwind glamourfest. Though the heavy rains literally put a damper on the festivities, even gusty storms couldn’t keep the glamour at bay. Opening the festival was the much-touted Great Gatsby that was kicked-off with an after-party that resembled a decadent club that Gatsby might actually have frequented. It was created under a tent at the end of a pier and beneath the steady drumbeat of thundering rain. Some of the best soirees the parties surrounding the festival. On Monday, Chopard threw an “In Love with

Cinema” bash that celebrated iconic kisses on the silver screen; it was held on the historic Art Deco luxury yacht, Savarona, which was once owned by Mustafa Ataturk, the founder of the Turkish Republic. Set in the middle of the Mediterranean, guests such as Uma Thurman, Naomie Harris, Petra Nemcova, Selita Ebanks and Erin Heatherton enjoyed a bevy of entertainment including a high fashion jewelry show, dancers, a magician and dancing under the stars. That same night across the sea was billionaire Paul Allen’s exclusive and intimate soiree aboard the smaller of his super yachts: the 303-foot Tatoosh. Invitations to his legendary parties are always the most sought-after in Cannes— this year the theme was Black and White in the Great Blue. Summer in the Hamptons is all about outdoor entertaining. Hamptons Chef and TV Personality George Hirsch offers George Hirsch Lifestyle. First and foremost consider buffet style to take the pressure off serving courses, therefore allowing more time to enjoy your guests. Buffets can be a fun way to entertain and also span the levels of formality from casual to a very upscale celebration. The best parties’ most memorable outcomes have resulted from a more casual entertaining atmosphere, making buffet style entertaining my favorite way to organize a get-together. Tableware is essential to a successful party. Whether using disposables or traditional glassware, as a rule of thumb, have plenty of glasses, at least 3 times guest count without any being washed. Roll-Ups: Set up forks, spoons and knives rolled up into napkins. Make extra. Plate-Up according to your menu: Always provide one plate for hot prepared foods and another for cold dishes. Got umbrellas, canopies or a cabana? Provide shade for the bar & buffet food serving table and shade for guests. Cool beverages with an ice bath, ice mixed with water. It chills wine, beer and all container beverages faster than just ice. The ice maker is your friend: You’ll need about 1 pound or more of ice per person for drinks and chilling soft drinks, wine and beer. Include in your party plan the option of preparing some foods from home and buying some prepared foods from a local restaurant or specialty food market, which can alleviate party menu pressure for the busy home cook. The menu should include a complementary mix of meat, poultry, seafood, vegetable and salads for wide audience appeal. Themed menus are straightforward to get inspired by—simple done well, is my motto. Grill as much in advance of the party, so the grill chef gets to have some fun and enjoy the guests. Set up the bar one hour before guests arrive and close a couple of hours before guests leave. Time to close the bar is the perfect cue to put out desserts and coffee. Serve cookies and brownies. Make extra batches to send home with guests as a sweet token of your party.

King of Kebabs Recipe Makes 4 servings | Recipe by George Hirsch 1 pound mixed beef, pork tenderloin, and chicken (cut into two inch pieces) 1/4 teaspoon ground red (cayenne) pepper 1/2 teaspoon each; ground cumin, dried oregano 1 tablespoon each: fresh parsley and fresh mint Fresh ground black pepper, to taste Pinch sea salt 1/4 cup olive oil 2 fresh lemons, sliced Fresh mint, chopped 1 cup plain Greek yogurt (optional) For Vegetables: Use any mixture of onion, peppers, squash, eggplant and mushrooms, cut into 2 inch cubes. Instructions: Mix the cut up meat and vegetables. Grease metal skewers with Divide the meat mixture evenly on all skewers (depending on the length of skewer). Push the skewer through the middle of the meat, lengthwise, and alternate with a piece of onion on the skewer, spreading it evenly. Repeat with the other skewers. Season with the garlic, cayenne, cumin, oregano, parsley, mint, black pepper and salt in a bowl. Brush kebabs with the olive oil. Cover and place in refrigerator to chill and allow seasoning to bloom with meat. When ready to grill, brush the outside of meat with additional olive oil. Preheat the grill to high. Place kebabs on very hot grill with lemon slices. After lemon slices brown, place them Grill meat and vegetable kebabs 5 minutes, turning frequently, or until cooked through to desired doneness. hen people spend the weekend at my house in Rhinebeck, they always come down the stairs on Sunday morning – usually around noon – and remark, “I haven’t slept like that in years.”

There’s something about the oxygen in the Hudson Valley that does that to you. Sleep is heavy, the way it used to be when you were a child – dreamless. You are drugged by the rich purity of the air and wake up feeling fully refreshed. Think of Washington Irving’s Rip Van Winkle who falls asleep for on the American Revolution. That’s the way it feels when you are in Rhinebeck. Worldly events fall away. The Hudson River school painters got it right: sunlight falls in a golden shimmer like a scene painted by Thomas Cole. Or sometimes a light haze river, reminiscent of the misty, dreamy landscapes of Asher Durand. Over the mountains you can see the mysticism of Frederick Church in the sunset “Heart of the Andes” hangs in his home in nearby Hudson New York). I have been coming to Rhinebeck all my life. My family, descended from Dutch settlers, arrived in this area in the mid 1600’s. So it was no surprise, after roaming the world as a journalist for several decades, that I decided to call this home base. I can attest that not much has changed here in thirty years. Rhinebeck remains unspoiled, which cannot be said of other popular resorts within two-hour driving distance of the city. The village of Rhinebeck is quaint, yet sophisticated. Manhattanites pass through and keep the village on its toes in terms of style. The Upstate Film Theater in the center of town always the Angelica in Manhattan. The local restaurants are top notch, from the glorious colonial-era tavern of the Beekman Arms, to the breezy casual feel of Terapin, or Gigi’s on Montgomery Street. Local chefs often are recruited from the nearby Culinary Institute of America, and even the local grilled cheese sandwiches.
Rhinebeck is a perfect shopping town. An afternoon stroll takes you from one end of the main street to the other, with plenty of time to browse all the antique shops and boutiques in between.

The University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819, has contemporary cultural learning opportunities, as well as Jeffersonian architectural genius. The Small Collections Library is a true treasure trove, with small exhibits and a view of open stacks of rare books behind gleaming glass – access without risk. The Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia has rotating innovative exhibits. For theatrical goings on, the UVA theaters (Ruth Caplin, Culbreth and Helms) are running a Heritage Theater Festival over the summer.

With a voice reminiscent of Kathleen Turner and as beautiful as a Persian queen, Shohreh Aghdashloo has roared onto the Hollywood would be wrong. It was only through hard work and perseverance that she honed her one of the most beloved actresses on screen today. We sat down with her at a neighborhood café to discuss her new book, which details her life’s journey from her homeland through England to Los Angeles, her Academy Award nomination for House of Sand and Fog

Her opportunity came when her husband told her about an audition for the role of a British queen for The Narrow Road to the Deep North. Upon completing her audition, she was of the workshop told her, “Congratulations little girl, you won the contest for playing the role.” This was the impetus for becoming a successful actress in Iran.

Shohreh was torn, but her desire for acting grew when she met a man who taught her all there was to know about live cinema. “For cinema is all about metaphors and symbols.” This became a whole new world, “a world
After graduation, a playwright friend of hers called her and said he had written a play with a lead role in it for her. She read it and immediately fell in love. “It was a political play,” she said. “It dawned on me that I don’t have to change my profession. I can still be an actress.” The play was put on stage for sold out. Once the United States heard about the play, they wanted to bring it to Los Angeles. When a riot broke out to see the play, she decided she wanted to live here, a place where people would break down the door to see her perform.

s a comfortably middle-class Baby Boomer with a passion for fashion, I do have to exercise some frugality. Fortunately, this comes naturally to me since I was raised by parents who were children of the Depression and passed on their values to me. This column is a continuing commentary on my efforts to justify fashion and frugality. I’m very ingenious, wearing things in a way that they were really not intended. For instance, I have a rather expensive sarong-type black wool skirt by Donna Karan. I’ve had it for years, but it was a mistake. I never should have bought it. Every time I wore it, the big knot in the front made me look fat even though I’m actually very slim. But as I say, it was expensive, so the thought of throwing it out bothered me. Finally, I put it in a pile to give to charity. But before I gave it away, I suddenly had an “aha” moment. Why not wear it as a shawl? I now have a beautiful, luxurious black wool shawl and no one would ever suspect it’s really a skirt. It has no zipper, buttons or closure and is very wide. Remember when half-slips and petticoats were part of every woman’s wardrobe? Well, I unearthed a beautiful black taffeta one with embroidery on the hem. It was buried in the back of a drawer, and I forgot I had it. Into the pile marked for charity it went. And then another “aha” moment. Why not wear it as a skirt? Why not, indeed. I wear it in the summer with a tee shirt over it, belted loosely at the

By Phil Chan Produced By Joe Alexander New York City Ballet Principal Dancer Sara Mearns joined the New York Philharmonic at Avery Fisher Hall, to perform “A Dancers Dream: Two Works by Stravinsky.” The avant-garde work blended music with ballet, live animation, video, puppetry, and circus arts. Born in South Carolina, Mearns began training at age three and by thirteen she was being coached by former NY City Ballet prima ballerina Patricia McBride who danced under George Balanchine. An early test for her as a young dancer came was when she competed at Youth America Grand Prix, the world’s largest student ballet scholarship competition. “It was very challenging. I didn’t realize the competition would be so good. It encouraged me to up my game and to see what other young talent was out there. It gave me a different mental state and the drive to get to NY. I knew that I wasn’t going to be like those other girls; I needed to work harder.” yagp.org. The choreographer was Karole Armitage, who has been affectionately dubbed the “Punk Ballerina.” “I had met Karole through mutual friends and then I saw a performance of Armitage Gone! Dance downtown, and I thought it was really fun – Very punk rock. When I got attached to ‘A Dancers Dream’ and heard that she was going to do the project as well, I got very excited because I knew we would work well together. She has a background of working with Balanchine, she knows the style, she knows my dancing, and she’s a huge fan of New York City Ballet. We did a story ballet, so the steps had to correspond to the story. Her rep is really fun: You’ll be doing a classical step and then all of a sudden you will do something completely funky. You don’t really do that a lot at City Ballet.” The process of creating a new work pushed Mearns into developing her own points of view. “We are in the studio six hours a day for two and a half weeks. Every day is something new. I was able to work with Karole and the other artists to create this story. A lot of times it’s not about the steps – it’s asking, ‘who I am interacting with? Is it going to read well to the audience?’ I have never been able to do that before at this level, and put my opinions in there. Chef Will Foden and Wine Director Jean-Luc Le Du recently re-crafted the menu at 83 ½, the farm-to-table Italian gem on the Upper East Side. Owner Vincenzo Mangiafridda’s previous culinary treasure served as the muse for his newest. The idea behind 83 ½ began to ferment in his mind while developing Gino’s Pizzeria, a 20-year-old beloved neighborhood spot, and in between trips to the family farm in Caccamo, Sicily. The heart and soul of Italian food is grounded in home cooking, and such intimacy is what makes 83 ½ special. The restaurant only seats 40 and patrons can observe the bustling kitchen from their tables or vie for the chef ’s counter kitchen. Regardless of where you sit, the owner is known for making everyone feel like family. The small, farm-to-table restaurant utilizes seasonal produce—a rare, but coveted trait within Manhattan’s dining landscape. The
menu strongly favors Mangiafridda’s Sicilian roots and incorporates the freshest produce available. We started with a couple of small poached tuna, and baccala polpettes (braised enough to whet our appetites for the meal to come yet left us awaiting the subsequent courses. The “stuzzicare” also includes dishes such as caponata, an eggplant with raisins and pine nuts that is aromatic and true to the Arab Next, we had the burrata and steamed cockles. As your Curmudgeon-in-Residence and dyed-in-the-wool New Yorker, I must say I am so annoyed at the high prices of Broadway shows. Years ago I used to see every show on Broadway. No sooner did a show open, I read the reviews, and promptly bought tickets. That was when ticket prices were reasonable--some as low as $10 or $15 for previews. And no, that was not in the days of Flo Ziegfeld. Today it’s not at all unusual for shows to charge over $100 for tickets--the cheaper tickets. Naturally, the people who go to the theater today are tourists who feel they must see at least one Broadway show when visiting New York, the very wealthy, and young kids who will wait on line for hours to get discount or standing-room tickets. The entire middle class has been shut out except to celebrate a birthday or anniversary. For a couple to go to the theater today could easily cost $500 when you factor in the tickets, dinner, parking and a babysitter. How many people can afford it? It’s become something you do to celebrate a special occasion and only after some thought and consideration. Sadly, the reason the theater is so expensive today is because of unions. The stagehands, carpenters, musicians, etc. are making a good living and that’s wonderful, of course, but they’ve made it impossible for middle class people like themselves to enjoy the theater. Today the unions tell the producer how many people they must hire. Even if a show is set up so the actors move the scenery themselves, the producers still have to hire a certain number of stagehands who sit backstage and play cards. It’s wonderful that the stagehands and others so important to the Broadway theater are getting a good wage but at what cost to theatergoers? How do they get enough money to support their families and people still get to enjoy the theatre?
