EDITOR’S NOTE Wow! The Hot Issue has finally arrived! We are so excited to present this month’s edition because it features Tracy Anderson, the workout guru and smoking hot mom. With a body of steel, a jawline that could kill and a career in full swing, we couldn’t think of anyone better to feature. I think you’ll find her photos steamy and the interview revealing. We hope you enjoy the piece as much as we loved working with her. Talking about working with celebrities, we have John Mahdessian, owner of Madame Paulette’s, the most luxurious dry cleaning service in New York City. Yes, they do dry cleaning, but they also offer – tailoring, home furnishing cleaning, and much more (read about what all the things they do on page 56-57). We’ve also got sizzling Manhattan and Brooklyn real estate. As mentioned previously, we are making a commitment to bring you the best of this hot market. From downtown to uptown, we work with the best real estate writers and professionals to gather information that is useful and up-to-date. Stay with us for an exciting ride into this ultra-exclusive world!

Michael Travin, President of Resident Magazine and me

Travel, as always, is well represented. From haute hideaways (titillating Mexico) to sultry summer jaunts (Cape Cod, anyone?) to Decadent Dubai and everything in between – we’ve got your luxury travel needs covered. We scour the earth to find you the best and hope you use us as your guide. Spas, fashion, wellness and the party circuit are also within these pages. We have a love for all things New York and we are working hard to show it. Look for more changes and deeper bonds with this marvelous city! Lastly, we are having a party for Tracy on August 21, 2014 and would love for you to join us. Email me at the address below for details! Thanks for reading!

Resident Alien S

o there was your favorite incorrigible, ink-stained wretch totally at ease, exuding effortless chic from seat 3A (American) on a quick getaway weekend to what GW will now declare – Chicago: America’s Coolest City. The Windy City, is how most jetrosexuals, raconteurs have long referred to Chicago. It was my first visit, and after a quick, long weekend nesting at the chicly appointed Thompson Chicago located in the heart of Chicago’s Gold coast, GW is more than looking forward to a return visit. For now, there is no doubt that taking up residence at the swanky let low-key Thompson Chicago is requisite. The 247 room, all replete, with floor to ceiling sweeping views of Lake Michigan or in my instance, birds-eye view of chic shops high brow shops such as Barneys, Ermenegildo Zegna et al, which abound along the Windy City’s famous Magnificent Mile or ‘’Mag Mile’’ as the local yokels call it. The Thompson Chicago, with its bold architectural features and exquisite design by the noted British interior designer Tara Bernard, is one of the gold-standard hotel properties of the Chicago visionary and emerging 21st Century hotelier Benjamin

J. Weprin and his much talked about Adventurous Journey Capital Partners (AJCP) - a dynamic hospitality development group which also counts in its holdings the world famous Malliouhana in Anguilla, BWI. Hotel Saint Barth Isle de France, yet another of the iconic holdings of AJCP has just in fact been sold to the Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy Group under the famed Bernard Arnault for some $100 million dollars and is destined to be the first hotel property of the five-star LVMH conglomerate. But Chicago is his home and with great reason, in fact, one at this point in time could easily insist on making the effort to imbibe Chicago yourself and why not this month of August for the already iconic Lollapalooza Music Festival at the latter days of this month. Or even too, mid - September, how about the 22nd of that month FLOTUS Obama where you could orchestrate a seminal rite of passage for your growing teenage gazelles Sasha and Malia. And have your daughters accompany you down the red carpet of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago – dressed to the nines in kitten heels and fine evening wear to celebrate, petite chignons to top the look at what will be certainly be the HOTTEST art opening galas in America this Autumn.

The artsy-fartsy crowd from all coasts will be gathering en masse for this one of a kind international exhibition of the extraordinary career of David Bowie in a groundbreaking retrospective at the MCA, paces away from the fabulous Magnificent Mile in downtown Chicago - for DAVID BOWIE IS - as this must-see retrospective is being called. “MCA has built its history on a multi-disciplinary understanding of creativity in all its forms,” says James W. Darling, the Chief Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, “and this wide-angle retrospective will revere the extraordinary career of David Bowie.” “The exhibition,” he continues, “will focus on his creative process and his collaborative work with artists and designers and how that has influenced wider movements in art, design, music and theater.” This is not to be missed people, and if for no other reason this is reason enough to follow this astute arbiter and pencil a visit to Chicago in your calendar before January 4, 2015 when the David Bowie retrospective will end its only American museum run. I know I may sound ridiculously provincial in saying this, but GW was truly awed at how chic and sophisticated and stylish that town really is. And did I tell you? The sexiest, most awesomely well-dressed men – yes men – that

BUZZ GW has seen in any necropolis in some time seem to live in this Illinois city. And then of course there is all American Express titanium card shopping to do! And yes my shopaholics the place to start has to be 900 North Michigan Shops. The fashionable indoor mall on Mag Mile features all the usual upscale staples - Bloomingdales, Gucci, Michael Kors and even Lululemon. And if you can’t find your favorite shop there then

stroll around the corner north or south and you are bound to find a Vuitton, a Prada or a Tom Ford boutique. And while you are it, marvel at the helmet hair ladies who lunch, dressed to the nines, at 1:00 pm on any glorious sun filled Chicago afternoon. Sights such as that are increasingly rare in Manhattan. When was the last time you saw a clutch of well-dressed women of a certain age strolling Madison Avenue? The ladieswho-lunch are alive and well and teetering all

over the Mag Mile in their Manolos en route to a klatch at one of the thousands of divine and fabulous restaurants that dot this well noted and much acclaimed foodie city. After a quick few days strolling the Mag Mile and of course, taking the most perfect selfie by the Chicago landmark public art of Anish Kapoor in Millennium Park, the nights were spent at fine dining spots like Kevin Boehm’s Girl & The Goat where even the sautéed green beans are the most delicious you will ever taste in your life! And this is the city where that famous Chicago chef Art Smith can make tofu taste like true friend chicken at his new food venture LYFE Kitchen on N, Clarke Street. It’s all about healthy food choices for Oprah’s favorite chef these days and GW will now be the first to tell you that Art Smith in fact will open his next LYFE Kitchen in Hells Kitchen this September just in time for the fashionistas congregating for New York Fashion Week that same month will have a new boîte to flaunt their size triple zero J Crew fashions. And I will be in touch.

uerto Rico is a beautiful Island with some of the most picturesque beaches in the Northern Hemisphere. Having visited there I can tell you this first-hand the weather is beautiful and the hotels offer a place in the sun unrivaled in the United States. I can also tell you that when visiting I have experienced power outages that were definitely not weather related. Puerto Rico has suffered more than their fair share of problems. Heavy debts that have surpassed 70 Billion Dollars and until a recent 3.5 Billion Dollar sale of G O bonds Puerto Rico risked being left down and out. Interestingly enough, John Paulson the famous hedge fund financier and many institutional investors were heavy buyers of this new issue. Historically, the municipal bond market has been controlled by individual investors often regarded as a largely unsophisticated group that makes investments and holds them for the longer term. They are easily susceptible to screaming headlines, one example being when Meredith Whitney predicted doom to municipal bonds leading to an epic sell off, only to bounce back when her predictions were not met. President Obama’s former Chief of Staff and current Mayor of Chicago Rahm

tax rates on capital gains and dividends can be had. Lower tax rates for qualifying corporations are also possible under these new laws. These are 100% legal and I would personally suggest if interested to contact a financial specialist familiar with offshore accounting.

Emanuel was once quoted as saying “You don’t ever want a crisis to go to waste.” Puerto Rico recently enacted legal Act 20 and Act 22. These measures were instituted to incentivize wealthy individuals and corporations to move to the Island. Should you become a resident of Puerto Rico zero

I believe personally in watching the smart money. Being “triple tax free” Puerto Rico Municipal Bonds which in many cases are yielding north of 7% in a globally yield starved investment environment may be just the ticket for some. However, in no way would I make a blanket buy recommendation. Due to the nature of the municipal bond market there are pockets of opportunity in Puerto Rico and I do believe it is possible for some of the bond issues to be restructured. I also believe there will be some issues that will be untouched. In this scenario the emphasis is firmly placed on doing your homework and perhaps there is a small investment to be had in the island bonds to juice up the yielding portion of your investment portfolio. For the more adventurous relocation to paradise might provide the booty only a pirate could dream of without the risk of swinging (at least physically) from the yardarm should things turn sour.

WELLNESS

COOLEST WAY TO LOOSE WIGHT By W. A. Muller

C

oolSculpting is a non-invasive, clinically proven procedure to selectively reduce fat layers in problem areas using a patented cooling technology. It is a safe procedure cleared by the FDA and CE marked in Europe that gently cools unwanted fat cells in the body to induce a natural, controlled elimination of fat cells. This reduces bulges in treated areas of the body without harming surrounding tissue. The procedure involves no needles, surgery or downtime, so patients can resume daily activities including work and exercise, immediately following treatment. Patients can generally sit or lie comfortably and read, work on their laptop or even nap during the procedure. The procedure is performed in a medical office, under the supervision of a physician specializing in cosmetic procedures. Procedures last about one to two hours, so treatment can easily be performed during a lunch hour or without major disruption to the day, but the results are dramatic! On average, each CoolSculpting procedure results in a 20 percent reduction of fat in the treated areas, and patients can start to see results as soon as three weeks following treatment, with the most dramatic results occurring over a period of two to four months in most patients. During the CoolSculpting procedure, a non-invasive applicator delivers precisely controlled cooling to the treatment area to specifically target underlying fat, leaving surface skin tissue unaffected. When fat cells are exposed to extreme cold, a process of natural removal is triggered, which gradually reduces the thickness of the fat layer. The result is a visible reduction in fat bulges. CoolSculpting is not intended as a weightreduction program for overweight individuals. The best candidates for the procedure are people near their ideal body weight who eat well and exercise regularly and have pockets of fat that have not responded to a healthy lifestyle. They are seeking spot reduction for specific areas of fat but are not considering a surgical procedure. You can try CoolSculpting at MedSpa44 only half a block from Grand Central. MedSpa44 is an elegant, full-service spa that infuses traditional services with the latest technology in cosmetic treatments to create a unique facility. Besides CoolsSculpting you can check out other body contouring service they offer called Lila Straberry Laser. •

Hard to Swallow? You may be living with an esophageal problem

If you have regular heartburn or your food is sticking, you may be ignoring one of the biggest cancer risk factors around. The Esophageal Disorders Program at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center Experts in treating all esophageal disorders If left untreated, esophageal disorders can lead to serious health complications. GERD: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) results when the valve between the esophagus and stomach weakens, causing stomach contents to rise into the esophagus and cause heartburn. Esophagitis: Untreated GERD or food allergies may cause chronic irritation and swelling of the esophagus. Esophageal stricture: Untreated esophagitis can cause scar tissue and narrowing of the esophagus and swallowing difficulties. Esophageal ulcers: Stomach acid can wear away the esophageal lining, causing sores, ulcers and discomfort.

Barrett’s esophagus: Constant acid reflux can cause pre-cancerous changes in cells, a condition known as Barrett’s esophagus. Esophageal cancer: Smoking, acid reflux, untreated Barrett’s esophagus, and excessive alcohol ingestion may contribute to esophageal cancer. Achalasia: A disorder of the esophagus which affects its ability to move food toward the stomach. Common symptoms of achalasia include difficulty in swallowing, chest pain, and regurgitation of food and liquids.

A Subversive View of Pop Culture O

By Hillary Latos

ne of the most influential and highest paid visual artists of the post war generation, Jeff Koons, is taking over the entire Whitney Museum to display a retrospective culminating 35 years of work from the early beginnings to the present day. With his unique ability to bridge the gap between high and low brow, luxury and mass, artist and celebrity, he became a cult figure himself and has collaborated with pop icons such as Michael Jackson to Lady Gaga to even fast fashion retailer H&M and Dom Perignon. Similar to Warhol’s rise to fame of taking everyday commercial objects and iconic pop culture figures and elevating them from the banal to the exceptional, he too has pushed the boundaries of industrial fabrication with overarching themes, forcing us to examine the culture we live in and art’s place in that culture. Whitney’s Associate Director of Programs Scott Rothkopf remarks, “Koons is widely known as the maker of a handful of iconic objects, but this retrospective will for the first time take the full measure of his art. Never before have so many of his works been on view together, nor has the Whitney ever devoted so much space to a single artist. We felt that it was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the closing of our uptown building with an exhibition of great scholarly rigor that also promises to be a major international cultural event.” This comprehensive look at his incredible body of work exhibits some of his most well known studies starting with the One Ball Total Equilibrium Tank from 1985 which suspends a basketball in a per-

His famous works such as Rabbit, Michael Jacson and Bubbles, Made in Heaven, Balloon Dog, Popeye, Inflatables, PreNew, The New, Equilibrium, Luxury and Degradation, Statuary, Banality, Easyfun, Celebration, Hulk Elvis, Antiquity, and Gazing Ball will sit alongside new, never been seen works like PlayDoh in the exhibit. Perhaps his most controversial body of work was Made in Heaven series which depicted nude images of Koons and his former Italian porn star wife Ilona Staller, which critics felt bordered on pornography at the time. While his

most popular and recognized works are his gigantic renditions of colorful childhood objects and icons that represent a childlike innocence like Popeye, Scottish Terrier Puppy Topiary, inflatable water toys, and shiny metallic balloon animals that have even melted the hearts of the most jaded critics. On view at the Whitney Museum of American Art from June 27 to October 19 before travelling to Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. For more information: whitney.org

Fitness Finds the Perfect Fit By Rory Winston By Christopher A Pape Photos By Shin+Christensen

‘S

tate-of-the-art,’ ‘scientifically tested,’ ‘personally tailored…’ Let’s face it; these have become no more than high-fiber phrases for the selling of dietary products and fitness programs. Whether it’s a Nautilus-evangelist soaked in steroids on the shopping channel or a spiritual healer sharing a long lost Mesopotamian weight loss diet on the Morning Show, there is always that point in the broadcast when self-improvement starts to smack of pseudo-science. Our zeitgeist has made it commonplace to hear terminology that had once been the domain of MIT graduates coming from the mouths of overdeveloped bodies espousing underdeveloped theories. Although many of these trainers are about as cutting edge as Charles Atlas, their misuse of terms like ‘paradigm shift’ lends them a false air of credibility. In a field that subsists on hyperbole and misinformation, how savvy are we in noticing that rare instance when the Real McCoy – a truly scientific program – presents itself? And where does all this background noise leave someone like Tracy Anderson, a genuinely exceptional trainer whose visionary approach to fitness demands to be heard? Having devoted 5 years to researching physiology, metabolism, sports medicine and fitness and then an additional 9 years into developing a unique methodology capable of helping anyone achieve their optimal physique and health, Anderson is the exception to the rule: she is the brain and body behind a uniquely interdisciplinary approach to fitness and wellbeing – one that eschews selfmystification. Did the former dancer create her program by randomly juxtaposing exercises from otherwise disparate fields? Though hybrids of this sort are quite fashionable, Anderson’s process was a lifelong journey. As the stunning and smoky voiced Miss Anderson explains to the Resident, “it’s not like I said, ooh, I know a lot about dance and then there’s Pilates so why not fuse elements from both and voila: Dancilates! I mean there are so many motivational trends in fitness today where they really have no idea what they’re doing with people’s bodies.” As for people whose respective bodies have gone through Andersons’ metamorphic method, the prestigious list includes: Madonna, Nicole Richie, Courtney Cox, Shakira, Jake and Maggie Gyllenhall, Ashley Greene, Jennifer Lopez, Bethenny Frankel and Gwyneth Paltrow – the last of whom not only had the benefit of Anderson as a personal trainer but was so taken by the all-encompassing approach that she decided to partner up with Anderson in an effort to make the program accessible to the population at large. Paradoxically, the long list of notables whom Anderson has trained has become a double-edged sword. While her career exponentially took off by word-of-AList-mouths, she is aware that her ability as a trainer occasionally undermines her credibility as a forerunner of highly evolved fitness program. With a ballerina for a mother - who had settled into a marriage and opened a dance school instead of pursuing her ambitions – Anderson was highly motivated and driven from an early age. Leaving the Midwest behind, she came to NY in the hopes of forging a career as a dancer. “But by the time I was 19,” admits Anderson, “I had gained nearly 40 lbs. There I was working out regularly not gorging -having a strong work ethic, talent… so why wasn’t I losing weight? Since I wasn’t the kind of person

who turns to drugs nor did I suffer from an eating disorder, I began to objectively evaluate what was wrong. Hormones? Metabolism? One thing was certain: my own metabolic rate wasn’t functioning at a very high level. What was even sadder was noticing that nearly all the advocated means of achieving that ‘healthy look’ were through measures that were extraordinarily unhealthy. Furthermore, none of them would help in the creation of a dancer’s body. Emaciated – maybe; healthy, strong and sustainable – certainly not.” Shortly after getting pregnant, Anderson noticed that her son’s dad – a professional athlete who played for the NY Knicks – was undergoing a unique rehabilitation program for his back, one that was being run by a doctor who was wholly committed to keeping athletes in the game long-term rather than just finding quick fix cures. Though her own husband was reluctant about the doctor because he was – in his words – “a bit off”, Anderson instinctively felt that the bit that was off was precisely what made him brilliant. Meeting up with doctor, Anderson learnt that athletes were regularly misdiagnosed and sent to unnecessary surgeries. Rather than training their bodies in a smarter and more varied way, they were undergoing countless short-term procedures. To quote Anderson, “the man was ahead of his time. He was studying the brain’s connection to muscles and how athletes create compartmentalized imbalances by overusing certain muscle groups. This lack of a holistic approach is what led to many of the most debilitating injuries.” With her thoughts in full throttle, Anderson continues: “I mean, taking his ideas one step further basically means we all really do have the ability to do whatever we want with our muscles but we just don’t have the content in fitness techniques to teach us how. And yes, I had always been good at content… and so at this point I became pretty obsessed. Suddenly all of it made sense: ‘there was something lacking across the board when it came to fitness’. And it was then I decided this would be my life’s focus - my mission, as it were… to create balance for imbalance. If one were familiar with the areas that were not in sync, one could compensate in strategic ways and build precisely the body one wanted. Of course, at that stage it was only an idea, a concept. It took years of research to come up with a precise and effective system.” For Anderson, knowing that a solution existed was like a premise for a screenwriter, a theory for a scientist. Proving that it

worked would take years of execution, honing, editing and fine-tuning. Her system demanded continuity, it would have to stave off boredom and entice the participants by being enjoyable. This would demand a new kind of system – one that was non-repetitive and unlike any other. It would have to empower its participants and create interactivity more than a simplified superimposed structure. Anderson had come full circle. Regardless how new the idea, the ancient Greeks had one thing right: sound mind in a sound body. In Anderson’s case, the two were inseparable. You needed to activate and engage the mind creatively in order to get genuine results, and in like, getting physical results would further energize the mind and create a greater need for inventiveness. The longer Anderson worked to perfect her methodology, the more she also realized that no program could work without taking into consideration the unique attributes of each individual. It would have to be catered to the person and you could not reshape a body without in some way reshaping the given person’s life. “Sure,” Anderson confesses, “if I had my choice, I like getting someone in the studio to create a customized approach – it’s optimal since each person is totally unique.” In Anderson’s vocabulary this ‘uniqueness’ is not some politically correct rant about ‘each one of us is so special in his/her own way’; rather, her allusion to ‘unique’ is made in a very measured concrete sense: “I mean people really have their very own biological blue print: tolerances, abilities, histories, coordination, connections to the brain.” In a sense, the point of view is as simple as it is brilliant: for a program to be successful on a given individual, it has to interact with the totality of who that person is. The associations must be personal. The clients must become an integral part of creating the process in which they will participate. Yes, for the first time in years, it was accurate to use the term ‘paradigm shift’ in fitness. With locations on both coasts, specially invented machines, DVD’s, a supplement line, exercise apparel and a series of books, Tracy Anderson is finally beginning to receive the worldwide attention she has long deserved. More importantly, she has managed to find a way to transpose a highly individualized program into something that works on a mass scale. State-of-the-art, scientifically tested, personally tailored – for the first time in a very long while the terms are a perfect fit.

The Last Laugh By Rory Winston

H

aving been brought up in a middle class Jewish neighborhood, to this day it’s difficult not to smile whenever I hear the words ‘dry cleaner.’ Throughout my adolescence the profession evoked a series of one-liners. Whether it was an elderly family member misquoting Myron Cohen’s “Mister, that ticket’s over ten years old… Okay, okay - it’ll be ready next Tuesday,” or a friend of my father recounting Woody Allen’s stand-up riff about aliens from the far reaches of our galaxy entrusting our planet with their laundry, dry cleaning had always been a staple punch line to an ever changing joke. By the time I was attending University, it was Jerry Seinfeld who revived the classic theme by sharing his discovery that ‘dry cleaning’ was an oxymoron: ‘dry and cleaning – how is this even possible? We know they’ve got liquid hidden somewhere on the premises.’ While the image I harbored about most professions had changed by the time I was an adult, dry cleaning remained immutable: although people who cooked exceptionally well or made a perfect pair of pants were no longer mothers or grandmothers but Michelin star chefs and haute couture designers, people who did dry cleaning – well, my imagination had hit an impasse. It was not until I discovered Madame Paulette that I realized that not only was dry cleaning an overlooked art but – when mastered and done to perfection – it was an art that elicited the same level of imagination, research, testing, creativity and obsessive passion that one relegates to the geniuses behind enduring works bearing the title ‘masterpiece.’ Although it may have been Lady Macbeth who ran about endlessly ranting “Out damn spot! Out I say,” it is none other than John Mahdessian who has succeeded at this demanding task even in places where other University accredited men have failed. Inventing techniques to suit un-

56 • Resident August 2014

Eliminating mildew and reviving fabrics whose colors have bled all over one another, Mahdessian has resurrected vintage costumes and designer heirlooms that even professional art restorers and auction houses had all but given up on. With acumen for chemistry, an eye for authenticity and colors and a keen awareness of design and integrity of product, Mahdessian has created a laboratory-cum-atelier capable of tackling all range of problems. In addition, he has created what can best be described as a think tank for revolutionary and creative solutions in the field of clothing and fabric restoration. It is little wonder that Madame Paulette has been entrusted with tasks ranging from restoring an original Winston Churchill general’s coat to the entire cast of costumes in the original Wizard of Oz - a project commissioned by the esteemed Disney Museum. With clients that range from the highly distinguished Anna Wintour to Kate Hudson, to the late Princess Diana, (just to name a few), Madame Paulette has become a noble House of creative restoration in its own right. Like all great institutions – whether it be the School of Rembrandt or Chanel, today’s Madame Paulette has seven subdivisions which include a Bridal Apparel, Cleaning and preservation sector (collaborating with numerous world renowned designers from Vera Wang to Monique Lhuillier to Christian Dior to Oscar de la Renta), a hand laundering department and a high caliber tailoring sector. Besides this, they have their signature flagship department on whose inception the entire business had begun, the design apparel section that deals with both Prêt a Porter and Couture.

As family traditions go, Madame Paulette dates back several generations to a woman of that name – a French lady who had settled with her Armenian born husband in New York, a man who was so devoted to his wife that he built an entire business primarily to service her highly valued private couture collections. The man in question was John’s great uncle. Shortly after his uncle got sick, John’s own father gave up his own aspirations to become an accountant and took over the business for him. Upon his great uncle’s death, Madame Paulette moved back to Paris and John’s dad ran the dry cleaning firm for the next 30 years. Just as John himself was graduating college and starting to work on Wall Street, history was to repeat itself. This time it was John’s father who had gotten sick and John eventually ended up coming to his rescue, abandoning his own dreams and taking over the business. But dynasties are strange creatures. They redirect the passions of those who marry themselves to their cause and inculcate them with new dreams and aspirations. And so it was that John ended up not only being wholly devoted to making Madame Paulette work as a business but channeling his own desires through her, he reinvented the dry cleaning firm till it included everything from restoring elements of high end interiors (Donald Trump’s private plane included) to complementing their clothing reparations to include leather and furs. Seinfeld was right. Mahdessian did have liquids hidden on the premises – especially invented, highly effective solutions that could resuscitate an otherwise dead garment. If the joke is on anybody today, it’s probably on comedy legends like Seinfeld and Woody Allen themselves since if it came to serious restoration or cleaning, it’s unlikely they’d turn to any place else than Madame Paulette.

precedented situations, Mahdessian not only managed to create a means of reversing oxidation and yellowing but has essentially been able to restore otherwise faded and corrupted garments to their original color and luster by soaking them in custom made solutions.

Norwegian Adventures By Sarah Sekula

I

t was a bluebird day in Voss, the picturesque adventure capital of Norway, as I climbed into a plane with a handful of skydivers from around the globe. “Can we do backflips?” I asked.

62 • Resident August 2014

“We’ll see,” my instructor said. My fingers were crossed. This was the second time I had been skydiving, and I was ready to bump up the fun factor even more. And once we hit about 12,000 feet, my wish came true; we catapulted our way out of the plane

and did five backflips before pulling the parachute. Better yet, after plunging through the clouds, I had a bird’s eye view of the fjords, mountains and lakes. Norway, is, hands-down, one of the most beautiful places on earth. And I was taking in

TRAVEL all its topographical glory while falling through the sky. You see, in Norway, getting to know its natural side can certainly be an adventure. Skydiving is an extreme example, but don’t worry, there is something for all levels, whether is’s dog-sledding or snowshoeing in the winter; or hiking and rafting come summertime. After my feet touched the ground, with the thrill of the skydive still fresh in my mind and the anticipation of so many more excursions yet to come, we left the Voss Skydiving center grinning from ear to ear. There are so many active pursuits to choose from in this Nordic land. But never fear we narrowed it down for you. Hiking in Bergen In the charming city of Bergen hop on the funicular to Mount Floien, which has great hiking trails gently leading you down to the bustling city below. Come evening, rest your head at Hotel Havnekontoret in the center of the city, where the decor is gorgeous and the waffles are a plenty. Bergen, Norway’s second largest city, is nestled among lush mountains, brightly colored wooden houses, a historic wharf and cobblestone streets. In other words, it doesn’t take long to fall in love with this place.

Paragliding above Oslo People flock to Oslo for its architectural wonders, walkable waterfront and vibrant nightlife, but others head there for thrills. Just 20 minutes from the city center, you can tandem paraglide thousands of feet above the city. It’s something all age levels can enjoy. And you’ll definitely go home with bragging rights (and the photos to prove it). If you have energy left afterward, check out the waterfalls (also within the city limits) for more photo-worthy backdrops. Kayaking along the coast In Ålesund, kayaking is a popular way to see the scenic coastline dotted with islands and flourishing wildlife. There’s no better way to get to know the marine life than by skimming over the surface of the water. It’s serene and gorgeous to the nth degree. Ålesund is made up of three islands and is located between two stunning fjords. On land, the mishmash of streets are jam packed with buildings festooned with amazing architectural detail, including turrets, spires and dragon heads. In fact, these days it’s considered one of the few art-nouveau cities in the world. If you prefer a walking tour, just pop by the tourism office.

Glacier trekking Go hiking in Jostedal Glacier National Park, and you’re in for a treat. The Nigardsbreen glacier is easy to get to. For starters, you can drive up to it, park and hike to the base of the behemoth in less than an hour. As part of the Jostedalsbreen ice cap, it is the largest glacier in Norway. In other words, this is a must-do. Not only will you see its soft-blue ice, but you can also bask in the glow of the lagoon nearby. www.jostedal.com Take the famous Rauma Railway Hopping on the train is a surefire way to soak in a load of scenic views in a matter of hours. Rauma Railway goes between Andalsnes and Dombas four times a day and takes less than two hours. The big panoramic windows allow for great views of the mountains and valleys and everything in between. Checking In: Mexico City’s “Las Alcobas” I

By Lisa Loverro

n the heart of Mexico City’s sophisticated neighborhood known as Polanco, Las Alcobas is an intimate boutique hotel that exemplifies the attitude of the posh Presidente Masaryk Avenue on which it resides (think Rodeo Drive). The hotel offers you a home away from home, leaving behind the hustle and bustle of this expansive city. The hotel is quite literally a contemporary work of art fusing together a palate of lush textures and warm colors creating a visual feast for the eyes. The interiors are sleek and modern and masterfully designed thanks to the North American design team of Yabu Pushelberg. There are just 35 guestrooms here, all with custom made rosewood furniture, marble baths (complete with luxury rain showers and whirlpool tubs), goose down bedding and a state-of-the-art electronic system that will operate everything from the room’s lighting to the curtains. The rooms and suites range from an Executive Suite to their magnificent Presidential Suite with a wrap-around, landscaped terrace and indoor-outdoor fireplace. Complimentary amenities in all rooms include locally hand-

The Spa at the hotel, Aurora, is small but offers an extensive treatment menu from facials and massages to body treatments (be sure to try their Nourish Scrub Wrap). But perhaps the real gem here is the warm Mexican hospitality you will feel the minute you arrive. While we’ve all had to maneuver around a language barrier when traveling, the primarily English-speaking staff made it quick and easy for me to check in. And when realizing my computer was left behind in my car

transfer they quickly tracked down my driver to ensure it was promptly returned to me, a testament to the meticulously well-trained staff. The main focal point of the lobby is its seven-floor spiral wood staircase that winds through the middle of the hotel. It immediately captures your attention upon arrival yet seamlessly blends into the warm earth tones and peaceful environment of the reception area, which also includes geometric carpeting and nude paintings. The hotel’s upscale dining option, Anatol, offers a wide variety of farm-to-table dishes under the direction of Executive Chef Justin Ermini, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America with stints at numerous Michelin starred restaurants including NYC’s Jean George. Although the hotel caters to a primarily business crowd, the leisure visitor will benefit from its prime location to some of Mexico’s City highly acclaimed museums and restaurants. Las Alcobas provides the perfect antidote to those seeking upscale amenities in an intimate boutique setting. For more information: www.lasalcobas.com

he undeniably chic Rosewood Mayakoba is set within a natural waterway filled with mangroves and lilly pads, stretching out to the white powdery sands of its Caribbean shoreline. The Rosewood is a unique property, with individual, private villas constructed from the region’s indigenous materials in an undisturbed environment. Accessing your villa is a unique experience in itself via a boat ride through the mangrovelined lagoon where you’ll immediately be welcomed by a butler who will lead you into your temporary home in heaven. The resort has two restaurants and a “tequila library,” which deserves an entire article all its own. Their Playa Bonita restaurant, a cute indoor/outdoor beach café serves up small plates of regional Mexican cuisine for lunch and family-style dishes for supper. Be sure to try one of their numerous ceviche dishes on the menu or the duck confit tacos, both delicious! Their all-day dining restaurant, Casa del Lago serves up an extensive breakfast buffet while lunch is serene and tranquil and the dinners are intimate and romantic. This

restaurant is located poolside away from the ocean. Our favorite restaurant, the Agave Azul Raw Bar and Tequila Library, exceeded any expectations you might may have about tequila bars. Probably one of the most extensive you will ever visit, the Agave Azul offers 96 different labels, of premium tequila brands, with tasting classes from Tuesday through Sunday; Monday is Margarita Night when you can prepare their own Margarita including pouring and shaking (who doesn’t love that!). The menu here is just as inviting; fresh ceviches, empanadas and various Mexican-inspired small bites. You can lounge here all night sipping and dining. The Agave Azul is a must-visit if you are in the area, as it’s open to all. The area of the Riviera Maya is packed with nearby activities and the Rosewood Mayakoba is conveniently located around most of these off-site excursions. The resort town of Playa Del Carmen is a quick 20-minute taxi ride away and it’s a great spot for shopping and local dining. The Mayan ruins in this region allow for perfect day trips. The closest is Tulum, about 45 minutes away from the resort. This ruin is beautifully set on the ocean, but smaller than the others in the area. A bit further are the ruins of Coba, about 1½ hours from the Riviera Maya and located in the jungle providing ample shade while touring. The furthest of all the ruins is Chichen Itza, about 3 hours away. All excursions are easily arranged through the Rosewood Mayakoba and are definitely worth the day trip. The grandeur, the leisure and the opulent hospitality are what sum up Rosewood Mayakoba. Its high quality service and welcoming staff only embellish this chic resort set within the natural waterway. Whether it is the boat ride to the villas, or other exotic sightseeings around the resort, Rosewood never fails to impress its guests. The seductive and luxurious scent of the Rosewood glides from its gorgeous natural surroundings to the beautiful suites, bringing guests the utmost enjoyment and relaxation. With the excellent dinning experience provided by Rosewood Mayakoba’s distinguished restaurants, satisfying pristine guests from across the globe, Rosewood Mayakoba brings luxury vacation to another splendid level. lush mangrove jungle it becomes evident that this resort is, quite literally, a secret hideaway. Set in the foliage and along the white sand beaches of the Rivera Maya, Belmond Maroma Resort and Spa might just be the

ultimate tropical paradise. With whitewashed villas, housing 63 guestrooms including a spa suite complete with an air-conditioned fitness room and private plunge pool, the property exudes serenity and romance.

TRAVEL It’s no surprise the hotel was built from a labor of love. Its original roots as a 200acre coconut plantation slowly evolved to include a private home and guesthouse, before becoming an intimate resort in

the mid 1990’s. The original architect, along with a family of Mayan masons, built this boutique resort as a place to welcome friends, but as word spread about this special place on the ocean, the resort continued to grow, always staying true to it Mayan roots but with an added touch of contemporary elegance. The design of these whitewashed buildings are what the architect refers to as “sacred geometry” in which the structures allow for east and west exposures to create a spiritual balance. The rooms are spacious and comfortable with special touches such as hand made soaps and Mexican tiles, hammocks on the balconies and caftans in place of bathrobes. Beyond the rooms there are 3 separate pools and a multitude of dining options. El Restaurante is the perfect spot for breakfast. Warm breezes surround you as this beachside restaurant serves up some fantastic breakfast dishes including a traditional Chilaquiles dish not to be missed. What makes this breakfast even more special is “Tia,” a Mayan woman and long time member of the Maroma staff who hand makes tortillas for you

while you dine. Lunch and dinner are equally decadent at their La Cantina and El Sol Tapas and Restaurants. The gem here is the beachside tequila bar known as Freddy’s Tequila and Ceviche Bar where one could sit for hours sampling their many Mescals and Tequilas along with fresh ceviches. The Kinan Spa at the resort offers Mayan inspired treatments and there’s even a Mayan Temazcal on property (a traditional Mayan steam ritual) that will leave you feeling renewed. Activities range from scuba and snorkeling to sailing and yachting. There’s also the option to do nothing at all except enjoy the powdery white sand beach and clear blue waters. The hotel offers many packages but for the active vacationer check their site for an occasional Fitness package that will have you up at 7:00am for boot camps and obstacle course races but will have you sleeping like baby while the sounds of rustling palm leaves offer a gentle lullaby. the sunrise over the sound and sunset over the beach. Being that the entire region is surrounded by water, aquatic activities take center stage in the lifestyle here. From deep sea fishing to stand up paddle boarding and kayaking in the marshland or just lazing about the beach life revolves around the soothing sounds of the ocean. The Emerald Isle on the Western half of the island of Bogue Banks offers a spectacular vista for sunsets over the beach. This family friendly southern beach village offers the largest selection of vacation rental homes ranging from quaint cottages to elegant beachside mansions- which are also lovingly referred to as “Sandcastles” by locals. Emerald Isle Realty can help you find your dream vacation rental tailored to your individual needs. One of the main attractions is the Cape Lookout National Seashore. Comprised of a 56 mile strand of white sand beach that create the natural barrier island of Eastern North Carolina, it’s only accessible by ferries running from Harkers Island, Beaufort, and Morehead City. On your journey, admire the savage beauty of Shackleford Banks where wild Spanish Mustangs have run free for over 400 years when they swam to shore from shipwrecked Spanish ships exploring the New World and have adapted over time creating their own sustainable environment.

TRAVEL When you reach Cape Lookout enjoy the quiet and calm white sand beaches and tour the island to the iconic Cape Lookout Lighthouse standing at 163 feet tall painted in a distinctive and graphic black and white diamond pattern for ships to easily determine North, East, South and West directions to warn ships of the treacherous waters of the area known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” which can be explored on dive excursions. To learn more about the aquatic life of the area, visit the Aquarium of Pine Knoll Shores to look at life underwater with local sharks, sea turtles, and local fish in larger than life tanks. Pet the stingrays in shallow water pools, and visit sea turtle nursery to learn more about their conservation efforts to save this endangered species. History buffs will appreciate Fort Macon State Park which played a significant role during the Civil War frequently changing hands between Union and Confederate forces. Open daily with free admission, history comes to life when Confederate soldiers reenact the battles of 1834 throughout the day and demonstrate the tedious task of firing a canon. It’s rumored that the barracks and kitchen are still haunted by souls who lost their lives defending the fort.

The Only Key You’ll Ever Need F

orget Key West, and put your lips together and blow goodbye kisses to Key Largo. The only Florida Key you’ll ever need doesn’t have a sexy Lauren Bacall story or rowdy fratboy reputation. The Sunshine State’s best-keptsecret spot is Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key, just outside the beachy little Florida Keys town of Marathon. Hawks Cay is the Keys’ most perfect R&R resort, a 60-acre island escape.

By Janis Turk bite to eat. There I asked why he thought we should film our segment on Duck Key.

troubles and stresses of the city life, Duck Key felt like a secluded secret hideaway.

“It’ll be great, I promise,” he said.

There, Hawks Cay Resort’s West Indies-style lobby looked inviting with its great brown wicker fans, rattan rockers and oversized sofas. After an easy check in, we found our rooms in the main building with wide private patios overlooking the adults-only swimming pool. Soon, we planted ourselves at an outdoor Tiki hut with views of Hawks’ private saltwater lagoon with its sandy shore and thatched umbrellas.

I was skeptical. “Who’s ever heard of Duck Key?” “Exactly,” said my friend with a wink.

I’ll always remember my first visit. A friend and I flew to Florida to do a television travel segment several years ago.

“I think I’m going to like it here,” I said. “Told you,” he smiled.

As we hurried down US Hwy 1 toward the Keys, a policeman pulled me over. “Apparently, speeding is just not done in Florida, “said my friend with a sheepish grin as I climbed back in the driver’s seat, ticket in hand. “Slow down. What’s the rush? You’re in the Keys!” He did his bestperturbed policeman impersonation—it was hilarious. So we slowed down and laughed all the way to Marathon, where we stopped for a

And that was the start of a beautiful friendship with the Florida Keys.

And so we rolled into Duck Key. Made up of five small islands with bridges spanning several broad, jet ski-friendly canals, welcoming blue waters glistened in the afternoon sun. My friend was right; tucked away from the

We spent the next few days’ deepsea fishing, scuba diving and lounging by the pool. After that, I set off on my own, heading to Hyatt Key West Resort & Spa hotel, within walking distance of Duvall Street and Hemingway’s house in Key West. I treated myself to a massage at the Hyatt’s Jala Spa and fell into the easy wave-driven rhythm of the Keys.

TRAVEL Hawks Cay Revisited This January I went back to see if the Keys still held the same magic. They did. But this time I decided to forget Key West and spend the whole time at Hawks Cay—“The only key you need,” as their slogan claims. With lovely well-appointed rooms and a large-scale renovation just underway throughout the resort, Hawks Cay Resort was every bit as wonderful as I’d remembered. Besides having 177 large West Indies style hotel rooms, Hawks also offers 255 spacious villas— privately owned townhouses with restful garden or water views, 30 of which are Duck Key Vacation Rentals. With an active 85-slip marina within easy walking-distance of the resort’s three fine dining restaurants, the serene Calm Waters Spa, and exciting kids and teen clubs and shops, Hawks Cay has it all. There’s even a game room, five swimming pools and a new Putting Course and Sports Field. New renovations throughout the resort mean every area at Hawks Cay means guests will be treated to a fresh, clean, modern coastal-casual atmosphere sure to please.

Dine in Style Guests never go hungry at Hawks Cay. Alma, its fine-dining eatery features Latin-themed dishes and an array of fine wines. Ocean, the large, bright casual restaurant with bountiful buffets is a favorite of families. The Indes Grill offers kid-friendly foods even picky eaters will enjoy. A new restaurant at the marina’s edge is currently being built there, too.

Water Fun At Hawks, I loved taking a thrilling Jet Ski tour. Guests can also enjoy deep sea fishing, or Tarpon fishing from a bridge, or snorkeling, scuba or snuba diving,

kayaking, paddle0boarding, kiteboarding or parasailing. Landlubbers enjoy the tennis and golf courses and the award-winning Calm Waters Spa. Best of all, the Hawks Cay Dolphin Connection program allows guests of all ages to view, feed, swim with—and even train —Atlantic bottlenose dolphins at the resort’s onsite research facility (the only one of its kind in the continental USA). The nearby town of Marathon also offers the chance to visit the Keys’ Sea Turtle Hospital, the only state-certified veterinary hospital in the world for sea turtles. Key to the Perfect Vacation When I think of my visits to Hawks Cay, I recall the highway patrol officer’s sage advice. “Slow down. Relax”— words we would all do well to heed. So take it easy and take a Florida Keys vacation. Hawks Cay is the only key you’ll need. For more information: hawkscay.com

t seems as if everyone from TriBeCa to the Upper West Side has been completely disinterested by Pad Thai these days. So-called ethnic foods, regardless where you go - be it Flushing, KTown or Ninth Ave., reiterates the same old slogan - “best Bulgogi” or “freshest Phó,” which brings Khe Yo to the front of the line. Its modern take on some of the coziest Laotian recipes has earned itself a place in adventurous New Yorkers’ hearts. From its now famous sticky rice to the savory and earthy Chili Prawn, Khe Yo draws inspiration from Laotian cuisine and creates mouthwatering Southeast Asian delicacies, making Khe Yo this summer’s it spot for a gastronomical adventure. This intimate spot, sitting right between West Broadway and Hudson Avenue, offers the fitting dinning experience for the TriBeCa neighborhood. Upon arrival, diners are greeted immediately by the delicate and welcoming atmosphere, amplified by the amber lighting and the soft whispers of seated guests. With one quick glance, diners can make out quickly the nuances in the intricate design of space within the restaurant. as Crunchy Coconut rice, Creekstone Farms Sesame Beef Jerky or the Kona Kampachi have already earned a fame of their own for its complex yet straightforward flavors. Its sticky rice, however, deserves an unexpected spotlight. Prior to the meal, guests are met with wet towels, convenient for cleaning up those eager hands before indulging in the thick and appetizing rice. As the menu implies, the best way to experience the sticky rice is to use your hand and dip it in the complementary Bang Bang and the eggplant sauces, since it “tastes better when you eat it with your hands.” While the chef ’s precision in combining the different flavors is of enormous importance, the overall dining experience is equally significant. Offering both the accurate Laotian flavors and a cozy, pleasant dinning ambience, Khe Yo is without a doubt the restaurant with the tangiest style in Manhattan. the different needs of TriBeCa’s Wall St. neighbors, window shoppers and budding families. A Chinese Delight T

By Janis Turk

he ancient Chinese poet Tao Yuanming describes a utopian land set in the northeast Yunnan Province of China, an area folded quietly into the southwest corner of China bordering Tibet, Vietnam, and Myanmar (Burma). James Hilton also wrote about this idyllic Shangri-La in Lost Horizon—a magical hidden mountain valley, home to fresh air, fertile farm lands and shining happy people. Here in New York, tucked away on a quiet block of Clinton Street in the East Village, a bright brick and mortar culinary Shangri-La Yunnan Kitchen conjures that same mythical geography of bliss. Drawing upon the diverse flavors, cultures and cooking techniques of the real Yunnan province, Chef Doron Wong combines farm-fresh ingredients with refreshing Yunnan flavors to create a sizzling little small-plates menu that is changing the NY Chinese restaurant scene. A late-night supper with friends began with small plates of fresh Woodear mushrooms, young soybeans and pickled chilies; a chrysanthemum salad with a hawthorn and sesame vinaigrette dressing; and spicy pulled pork noodles with chrysanthemum greens and cherry tomatoes drizzled with aromatic chili oil.

intricate influences of the flavors of its Burmese, Thai and Tibetan neighbors. The commingling of cuisines from the more than 25 ethnic minority tribes living in the Yunnan region culminates in distinctive, flavorful dishes featuring lots of mushrooms and delicate edible flowers. Chef Doron Wong and Yunnan Kitchen owner Erika Chou ate their way through the Yunnanese restaurants of Beijing and Shanghai before they came back to NY to create their menu. Seated at a small table set along a large plate glass window looking over the street, we enjoyed the clean well-lighted space of exposed brick walls, a wooden built-in banquette, soft lighting, oversized Asian art and the happy electric hum of pleased dinners. Next we crowded our little table with more dishes, like lamb meatballs Shao Kao with Yunnan spices; crispy whole prawns sprawling on a lime leaf; multi-grain congee served with soft cooked egg, peanuts and crispy shallots. Aromatic Jasmine rice and Ma La Chicken Wings seasoned with “numbing spices” (Sichuan peppers would be my guess) rounded out our pleasant late-night Lower East Side dinner. Often called Dian cuisine, Yunnan cooking is known for its eclectic fusion of subtle flavors, ingredients and techniques echoing the

With a discriminating little wine list and a full bar featuring house cocktails, an array of herbal teas, organic coffees, bottled beer and 6 interesting draft beers (like Alphabet City easy blond golden ale and Sixpoint Bengali tiger ipa), you won’t go thirsty in this little NY Shangri-La. As our little tired and full little band of friends dispersed, I knew it wouldn’t be long until we’d meet again at Yunnan Kitchen.

he Oyster Bar Grand Central can be many things to many people. It’s a great place for a quick stop before catching the train to the suburbs, it’s a meeting place for friends for some fantastic seafood and it’s a romantic New York City dinner spot for both tourists and locals. This century-old restaurant was shut down for almost three months for a much-needed facelift (you would need one too if you were 100 years old!) and has recently reopened to a highly anticipated unveiling. From the kitchen to its famous arched ceiling, the restaurant is brighter and shiner than ever. The restaurant is split into three sections, the main dining room to the left, the “counters” on the right offer individual seating and the “Saloon” has a long bar and table seating. There’s also a take-out window for quick snacks from soups to sandwiches for all those harried commuters held prisoners to their train schedules. The large room is bustling, as always, with a hard working wait staff. It’s an atmosphere

of “controlled chaos,” almost as hectic as the main concourse of Grand Central in the building where the Oyster Bar calls home. The menu has retained many of dishes this place has been known for: fried Ipwich clams, Stone Crab salad and their decadent chunky and creamy New England Clam Chowder (one of our favorites!) And, of course, and its namesake implies, there are oysters by the dozen, actually there are anywhere between 20-30 varieties served

here on any given day an arguably one of the best selections of oysters anywhere in Manhattan. If you’re not sure how you like them served, there’s an array of options to try; raw, fried, broiled and Oysters Rockefeller. If you’re wondering if you can order a great seafood dish here, the answer is “yes.” The Dover Sole is well worth the hefty price of $39.95. Be sure to try the Lobster Roll, it will transport back to your favorite little fish shack out on Long Island. The wine list here is extensive, to say the least. From Sparkling Wines to Ports and everything in between, you’ll find the perfect bottle to compliment your meal. Be sure to end the meal with one of their many homemade scrumptious desserts. Our favorites are the Key Lime Pie and Rice Pudding.

Restaurant Roundup By Hillary Latos

T

his month we wanted to celebrate the ethnic diversity and home cooked cuisine of the Big Apple’s melting pot. From home cooked Lebanese dishes to the flavorful Japanese Izakaya bites to contemporary Mexican to Portugese and Contemporary American, we are fortunate enough to have the flavors of the world at our doorstep. Whatever flavors you’re craving, New York has it all.

Hecho en Dumbo Hecho en Dumbo was born out of a small pop up café in Dumbo, which quickly outgrew it, digs to find its more permanent home in the Bowery. The idea was to dispel the stereotypes associated with Americanized Mexican cuisine and bring back the authentic flavors that mirror the contemporary culinary scene in Mexico City. Chef Danny Mena wanted to celebrate his native cuisine through tasty small plates- antijitos or “little whims” which celebrate the authentic Mexican gastronomy scene that’s hard to find stateside and shared the vision with partners Ethan Smith and Monica Ramos. With most of the staples created in house, ingredients sourced locally and spices sourced from South of the border, every dish is fresh and unique. Start with the succulent roasted bone marrow with carmelized wagyu beef tongue, or the fire roasted octopus salad with a garlic anchovy mojo. House specialties are the grilled black sea bass melts in your mouth drizzled with jalapeno aioli and the lamb barbacoa with grilled lamb chops, lamb sausage, neck and requeson. Favorite small dishes are the smoked sablefish tacos and the vegetarian empanadas with pumpkin, squash blossom, poblanos and zucchini. Pair the exotic flavors with creative cocktails like the fiery jalapeno laced Pink Panther margarita or the refreshing cucumber basil gin martini Mira Sushi & Izakaya 46 West 22nd Street NYC 212.989.7889 mirasushi.com

Mira Sushi & Izakaya Modeled after the savory Asian street fare served in Japan’s traditional Izakayas, which is the Japanese equivalent to a pub, Mira Sushi & Izakaya has brought this concept to the Flatiron. For Food Network fans, a must have is chef Brian Tsao’s Bulgogi tacos which beat Bobby Flay’s dish and led him to the finals. Juicy morsels of the sweet and spicy beef are complemented with a kimchi and Korean pear slaw sandwiched in a crispy wonton shell that is bursting with crunch and flavor. Other flavorful bites are the spicy tuna pizza with guacamole on a crispy roti, Kobe beef hot stone, spicy wontons, and the Tako Yaki octopus balls drizzled with Kewpie mayo and Tonkatsu sauce that are as authentic as what you would find in Osaka. The creative twist on Asian cuisine doesn’t end with the small dishes, the sushi selection ranges from whimsical and creative to classics. Former Nobu sushi chef Owen Wu has created signature rolls like the rock lobster roll shaped like a sinewy lobster complete with the head and tail with copious amounts of lobster seasoned with spicy mayo and sweet soy, or their dynamite roll with wild blue crab, avocado and topped with seared scallops and fried vermicelli. The volcano roll is topped with seared spicy tuna and caviar and fried with a crispy panko crunch with a spicy sweet aioli. To complement the Asian fusion flavors try a sochu flight, or an exotic Asian inspired cocktail like the yuzu lychee sangria or ginger lemongrass mojito.

Louro After stints at NYC’s top restaurants including Bouley and Per Se, Portuguese American Chef David Santos decided to bring his culinary skills to his own space and launched Louro in the West Village. Louro is Portuguese for “bay leaf ” which embodies his childhood memories of family trips to France and the Mediterranean with the fragrant scent of bay leaf wafting throughout family meals. Santos cooks what he loves with a focus on contemporary American cuisine peppered with Portuguese influence. Start with a Maryland Surf & Turf with crab and Old Bay spiced bone marrow or the Asian inspired kimchi fried rice with calamari, clams, shrimp, and duck egg. For large plates, his menu is influenced by seasonal ingredients with like branzino in a bouillabaisse broth and saffron aioli, octopus Bolognese with goose pancetta over homemade tagliatelle, and a pork chop with almond puree, poached cherries and cippolini onions. Every Monday Chef Santos also offers a different themed chef ’s table, Nossa Menu for $65 tasty off the menu options in an informal supper club format.

Au Za’atar Explore the exotic flavors of the Arabia with a French twist at Au Za’atar in the East Village serving classic dishes spanning the cuisines of Lebanon, Tunisia, and Morocco. Like mother like son, Salwa Fallous grew up in a traditional Lebanese household and spent plenty of time in the kitchen watching her grandmother pull together elaborate meals and wanted to share their favorite family recipes in an intimate and cozy rustic setting that feels as authentic as the cuisine. Choose from an extensive selection of mezze (small plates) such as Lebanon’s national dish- Kebbe Kras made with lean beef and bulgar wheat, onions and Lebanese cheese, escargot with butter and garlic, or the lamb tartare. Vegetarians will find plenty of delectable options like eggplant baba ghanoush, spinach pie, sweet fig crostini, and moussaka. By using traditional techniques of grilling, the marinated grilled lamb dishes are tender and succulent and equally as tasty is the braised lamb shank with an Armagnac prune sauce. A favorite is also the grilled branzino stuffed and seasoned with summer herbs featuring a crispy skin on the outside and tender flaking meat inside. The best way to enjoy this royal feast is with a large group of friends to try a little bit of everything that will surely lead to a memorable evening.

Loews Regency Bar and Grill Contemporary American cuisine takes on a new level at the Loews Regency Bar & Grill. Combining old and new, the hotel evokes the posh elegance of a Park Avenue hotel on the Upper East side with the contemporary and stylish flair of the neighboring Madison Avenue. Run by seasoned restaurateurs Gherardo Guarducci and Dimitri Pauli of the famous Milanese chain Saint Ambroeus they know their discerning audience and what they want. A master of contemporary American cuisine Executive Chef Dan Silverman honed his culinary talents at Union Square Café and The Standard Grill. While their power breakfast is a who’s who of the business world attracting a bevy of heavy hitting A-list media celebrities and moguls, dinner is where Chef Silverman’s culinary talents shine. Start with the crisp shredded radish and snowpea salad with pickled shitakes with a sweet and savory dressing. Indulge in the extensive raw bar with a variety of oysters from the East and West coasts as well as hamachi and crabmeat. Sublime renditions of Italian pasta dishes are the fusilli with oxtail ragu, and the Louisiana crayfish tomato linguine. For main courses try the grilled veal chops dressed with a delicate mushroom sauce or the summer preparation of seared yellowfin tuna with sunchokes, artichoke, and grapefruit. Finish the unforgettable meal with a sweet ending like an affogato with homemade gelato melted by an Italian espresso. Big Smoke Burger 70 7th Ave NYC 917.475.1910 bigsmokeburgher.com

Big Smoke Burger One of the best exports to come from our neighbors to the North, is Ontario based Big Smoke Burger which just opened its first stateside outpost in Chelsea. The Canadians have seemed to master the art of the American classic churning out generously sized organic Beretta Farm beef patties that are juicy and tasty on the inside with the perfect char grill crisp outside. Combine that with creative and gourmet toppings like gorgonzola and rosemary garlic mayo for their Blue burger or the subtly spiced chipotle mayo and caramelized onion Spicy burger. For those who want a little bit of everything try the Crazy burger with jalapeno havarti, chipotle may, bbq sauce, coleslaw and hot peppers. Though their specialty is in beef burgers, alternatives to beef are equally as satisfying such as the lamb burger topped with a cilantro feta spread, grilled chicken with balsamic dressing, and healthy green veggie burger with goat cheese. If you’ve ever been out past 4 am, disco fries or what the Canadians refer to as poutine were the preferred sustenance to soak up the excesses of the night- these crispy fries bathed in gravy and Ontario cheese curd are well worth every decadent calorie.

Cuba Let the rhythms of salsa and merengue transport you to another place and time to the bossa nova lifestyle of Havana, Cuba. Tucked away on a quiet street in Greenwich Village, Cuba celebrates the festive culture and gastronomy of this forbidden country through an extensively sweet selection of Bacardi fueled cocktails to a culmination of Cuba’s favorite dishes with hints of Spanish and Caribbean influences. Whet your appetite with savory small plates like the chicken fricassee or beef picadillo empanadas, garlicky sautéed prawns, seafood ceviche, or pork belly with a tangy balsamic glaze. For main courses the crispy suckling pig is a house specialty, the red wine braised oxtail pairs perfectly with the mashed plantains and the duck leg confit has the perfect balance of sweet and sour with a tamarind blackcurrant sauce. Jacques 1534 Most say Nolita is the new Soho, but Jacques 1534 is one of just a few holdouts to the seedier, darker side of Prince Street East of Broadway. The lights are dim, the leather upholstery is weathered and despite the chic address, there’s not a yuppy in sight. Jacques is part cocktail lounge, part French brazzerie, but unlike its famous neighbor a couple blocks south on Spring Street- Balthazar, you do actually feel as though here at Jacques you should be sipping absinthe on the Left Bank with Hemingway and the famous Parisian writers and painters from the 1920’s. We started out with a couple of Negronis, moved on to a crisp Sancerre as we enjoyed a kale salad and tuna sashimi with an assortment of spicy wasabi and fresh tasting seaweeds. Typical brazzerie main dishes included mussels, steak frites, roast chicken and fish and chips. All the food was tasty, prepared with fresh ingredients and nice size portions. Jacques has a friendly ambience with just the right mix of jazzy- grunge in Nolita. It’s a bit unsavory, a bit down and dirty, but a great place to hide from the Wall Street types and European tourists and get a great buzz from the signature cocktails and a full belly from the well prepared comfortable food.

Sauce The name says it all. This Lower East Side Italian hotspot specializes in slow cooked and braised sauces that remind you of an Italian nonna’s kitchen. Sauce is the fourth Italian themed outpost in the neighborhood by owners Frank Prisinzano and Rob DeFlorio who are behind Supper, Frank, and Lil’ Frankies who wanted to bestow their childhood memories of growing up in an Italian kitchen to the denizens of the Lower East Side. Comfort Italian food laden with hearty sauces like creamy and cheesy polenta with a rich Bolognese sauce drizzled with olive oil is served on a plank. Homemade papardelle with a porcini mushroom sauce, pepe and cacio spaghetti, homemade ricotta tortelloni, and meat ball ragu are so authentic you would think you stumbled upon a hidden trattoria in Bologna. Save room for their house made desserts including the rich and creamy gelato or the classic panna cotta or tiramisu to end the night on a sweet yet satisfying note.

Dromborg Castle

Fayetteville, Arkansas

T

he Dromborg. It’s an architectural tour de force. We say it that way because there is only one. Located in the verdant heart of the Ozark Mountains, this home is a unique legacy property. It was built to stand for centuries with four thousand tons of rock – hewn and fitted, stone by stone, as master masons have done since the second century, BC. The Dromborg is a dream made manifest, the realization of a lifetime of hard work – with a vision. In ancient Nordic, it translates as, “Dreams the size of mountains.” Inside, solid oak. Solid cherry. Solid walnut. Carved, sculpted and molded into 13,000 square feet of museum quality construction, each detail was built by one of the world’s great lumber barons for his own personal country estate. The Dromborg is a hundred acres worth of forested mountainside privacy, all within minutes of a major university and three Fortune 500 corporate campuses. Completed in 2008, the Dromborg’s design aesthetic. Completed in 2008, the Dromborg’s design aesthetic is inspired by Scottish castles of the 13th century. Classical motifs were also incorporated, as was often the case with historical European designs. The larger statement speaks to contemporary yet timeless values: vision, hard work and audacious dreams. The Dromborg overlooks the Ozark Mountains with a 300-degree panoramic view and is beautifully nested in Northwest Arkansas. Flying in? Have your pilot file a flight plan with KFYV. The Dromborg is located less than a country mile from the 6,100-foot runway at Fayetteville’s Drake Field. Luckily for you, this rare offering was just listed, and is offered at $15,000,000.

Madison Square Park A

By Linette Semino

t the heart of what used to be a bustling commercial district, Madison Square Park is identified as the nexus of Downtown’s most dynamic neighborhoods – Flatiron, Gramercy, NoMad and Chelsea. Running from 23rd to 26th Street, it is where uptown meets downtown. The park formally opened in 1847 and in the late 19th century the neighborhood surrounding it flourished as a privileged community where mansions and respected office buildings bordered the square. By the 1990’s the park had lost its splendor and fallen into disrepair with its eight prized monuments in decay. In 2001, the park underwent a $5 million restoration which was well-received by New Yorkers. Since its renewal, Madison Square Park has spurred noteworthy luxury residential developments. The Flatiron Building, the gold-crowned New York Life Building and the Metropolitan Life Tower (also known as Met Life Tower) remind us of Madison Square Park’s longtime commercial identity. In recent years, the square’s skyline welcomed two new icons; One Madison at 23 East 22nd Street and 10 Madison Square West. Whether you are waiting in line for a Shake Shack burger or admiring one of the park’s exciting art exhibits, these residential buildings cannot be ignored. Besides having the park nearby, they both draw celebrities and billionaires. One Madison is Downtown’s most captivating skyscraper. The slender 60-story bronze glass-clad tower offers 53 residences designed by Yabu Pushelberg and Cetra/Ruddy and developed by Related Companies and HFZ Capital Group. It is well-celebrated for its cinematic views of Manhattan, as well as dramatic river-to-river-to-sea vistas. In spite of its publicized troubled past, sales at One Madison have been going at full speed. Last year, The New York Post reported that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and supermodel Gisele Bundchen spent $14 million on a full-floor three-bedroom condo located on the 47th floor. In February, News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch purchased the prize-jewel penthouse and another full-floor apartment beneath it for a total of $57.25 million, according to Bloomberg.com. Mr. Murdoch’s choice of Madison Square Park represents perhaps the strongest endorsement

to date of the neighborhood. One Madison continues to have sizeable sales. Currently, listing website Streeteasy.com lists residence 55 for $37.5 million. This opulent duplex offers more than 6,600 square feet and encompasses the 55 and 56 floors. As you can imagine, this luxury apartment features jaw-dropping panoramic views of all of Manhattan. On the west side of the square, formerly one of the International Toy Center buildings, 10 Madison Square West offers 125 one- to five-bedroom residences designed by Alan Wanzenberg. WG 1107

REAL ESTATE LLC is an affiliate of The Witkoff Group and Vector Group Ltd. through its New Valley subsidiary are the developers behind this ambitious condo conversion. According to 10 Madison Square West’s official website, the iconic architecture and classic brick and limestone façade have been transformed by Goldstein, Hill & West Architects. The current architecture, akin to the refined façade of 15 Central Park West, was inspired by the building’s historic industrial heritage and contemporary design. Reportedly, nearly 95% of the 125 remarkable residences are already in contract. The availability on the building’s website lists Penthouse 22 for $35 million. This exquisite 5-bedroom with 6.5-baths residence has 6,515 square feet and encompasses the entire 22nd floor. Penthouse 22 is wrapped by over 1,700 square feet of private terraces and each living space has direct outdoor access. This exceptional apartment boasts 360 degree unobstructed views of the iconic Flatiron District and Madison Square Park.

neighborhood that is a celebrity favorite. Much of the credit for NoMad’s popularity is due to the legacy of its fine architecture and central location with easy access to main trains. Trendy NoMad has world-class hotels, wonderful restaurants and great nightlife. People are drawn by NoMad’s restored buildings which offer industrial details and loft-style layouts typically found in TriBeCa and Soho. New high-rise rental and condominium buildings also magnetize people looking for The Empire State Building views and modern comfort. NoMad has many great assets and having the park nearby is an added benefit of living there.

Madison Square Park’s residential rebirth has expanded to NoMad (North of Madison Square Park), which stretches from 25th Street up to 30th Street and from Sixth Avenue to Lexington Avenue. In recent years, NoMad has been transformed from a crowded commercial district inhabited by wholesale and variety stores into a fashionable residential

500 Sterling Launches in Crown Heights By W.A. Muller

500

Sterling is an extraordinary new rental development on the burgeoning border of Prospect Heights and Crown Heights – Brooklyn’s newest flourishing neighborhood. The seven-story, 77-home residential building generously pairs studios to two-bedrooms with modern design and custom touches. Developed by Adam America Real Estate and Horizon Group, 500 Sterling, which just launched leasing, boasts an array of amenities, including a fully equipped windowed gym, parking, part-time doorman, package room, private and bicycle storage and live-in superintendent.

Residents are greeted by 500 Sterling’s dramatic double-height lobby, while all homes contain premium kitchens finished in limed oak wall cabinetry, Caesarstone countertops, limestone backsplashes with appliances by Fisher & Paykel and KitchenAid. Every unit including studios has a washer/dryer. For Eliza Hartley, a former Upper East Sider whose apartment hunt took her from Brooklyn Heights to Crown Heights, settling on 500 Sterling was a simple decision. “While searching all over Brooklyn, mostly along the 2 and 5 subway lines, 500 Sterling’s beautiful amenities, lobby and apartments instantly grabbed my attention,” she said.

Open-air spaces are plentiful at 500 Sterling, with almost every unit offering expansive private outdoor space, and a roof deck complete with a misting wall, outdoor movie projector, lounging areas and barbecuing stations, all immensely popular in the summer months. “I’m definitely excited to spend time on the roof deck, which has some really incredible views of the city,” said Hartley. “The Crown Heights/Prospect Heights neighborhood has some great coffee shops and bars that will be perfect for getting my schoolwork done and spending time with friends.” Located in the heart of Brooklyn’s newest must-live neighborhood, 500 Sterling is just a stone’s throw from a multitude of popular eateries, gourmet markets, shopping and nightlife. Residents enjoy convenient access to public transportation, including the 2, 3, 4 and 5 trains, which are located just three blocks south. An array of outdoor and cultural activities, including the Brooklyn Museum, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Brooklyn Zoo and Prospect Park are all within blocks of 500 Sterling. Studios begin at $1,995; one-bedrooms begin at $2,495; and two-bedrooms begin at $3,100. Residents have already begun moving into 500 Sterling and taking advantage of its variety of amenities especially the barbecuing stations, misting wall, lounging areas and city views, which have gotten many through the long summer days. On the High Line By W.A. Muller

n a time when anything from a custom sailboat to a couture ball gown can be leased, New York City’s high-end rental market has recently reached new heights in providing residents with the ability to lease the ultimate luxury lifestyle. Offering exceptional services, amenities, and most importantly, well-appointed residences, these tailored buildings can be found in prime neighborhoods throughout Manhattan, each with their own signature details that make them truly unique. One of the most recent high-end rentals to open its doors is Abington House on the High Line, a Robert A.M. Stern-designed building that prominently sits directly along the popular High Line Park. Located in West Chelsea among notable galleries and restaurants, Abington House features an extensive curated art collection and custom Zen-like interiors signature of Clodagh Design. In addition to its noteworthy architect and interior designer, the building offers unexpected luxuries, including two beautifully appointed lounges and a sanctuary room where residents are able to unwind under dim lighting in a sound canceling space. For those looking to be in the center of it all, One MiMA Tower offers residents an unparalleled menu of amenities including a resident-only Equinox, full-size basketball and volleyball courts, an indoor pool, party rooms, an internet café and separate game room. The list goes on with its outdoor amenities including a grand outdoor screening area, multiple landscaped terraces, BBQ areas and private dining pods. The crowning amenity of this trophy building is its Jewel Box Lounge, a curated and intimate space located on the building’s 61st floor, offering helicopter views of New York City. Nestled Uptown with Central Park Views, a porte cochere, and even electric car-charging stations, is 1214 Fifth Avenue. The Pelli Clarke Pelli-designed 53-story glass and stone tower speaks for itself with unobstructed views in most residences and amenity spaces nestled on high floors. Residences stand out with walls of windows, white oak floors, walnut kitchens and luxurious marble baths. Located directly off Museum Mile, the building allows residents to take full advantage of New York City’s best attractions and best kept secrets, such as Central Park’s Conservatory Garden. One Union Square South also offers direct access to another prime New York City amenity, Union Square’s famous outdoor green mar-

Life in Technicolor T

he MissoniHome 2014 introductions, designed by Rosita Missoni, embody a new kind of energy, emblematic symbols and a variety of variables and patterns. Cool tones, smooth lines and linear graphics form a concrete counterbalance to eccentricity. The powerful impact of the textural materials and designs gives an energy and contagious vitality suitable both for large and small spaces. To Rosita, home designs embody a magic found in the endless interplay that links furnishing and fashion. MissoniHome 2014 collection, as delicate poppies, dazzling freesias and other seasonal blooms grow throughout the 2014 home stories, once again brings the elegant and vibrant technicolors to its clients. The floral theme is very dear to the Missoni family, who has carried out a tradition of gardening through the generations. Also in the mix are stories of patchworks, flames, stripes and geometric shapes, not forgetting bold, pictorial stripes in shaded or bright bands and on sheer backgrounds. One of the most emblematic Missoni symbols, the chevron, has also found its much overdue way into the outdoor collection. Missoni is known for its color choices, for dreaming up combinations that are as appealing as they are surprising. However, when asked about her favorite color, Rosita will admit: “black,” a perfect base on which to draw color and demand attention. The 2014 collection does just this with black and white hues elegantly mixed into patchwork and floral elements. The new designs also use natural, sandy shades; crystal-clear, bright blues; subtle watercolor hues; bold vintage tones; matte golds and more, combined in exciting and inspiring ways throughout the collection.

By W.A. Muller

To be fitting with this thematic aura, the collection dances with the endless possibilities of fabrics. Beautiful silk jacquards, like modern watercolor tapestries; soft velvets; printed cottons and linens; sheer tulles; distressed macramés; knitwear elements, there’s nowhere that MissoniHome won’t go when it comes to fabric experimentation. The family and brand is, at its heart, a textile company, designing down to each individual stitch to create unique blends of pattern, material, texture and color. MissoniHome also works with high- performance fabrics including Trevira, a fire-retardant material, available in a waterproof cotton version (Tempotest) for outdoor use. This allows the 2014 outdoor collection to include a wide choice of patterns for curtains, outdoor seating, custom furniture covers, pillows, poufs and more perfect for terraces, gardens, patios or even boats. One of the many shinning qualities of MissoniHome is the “soft structure” concept. The term “soft structure” may sound contradictory, but it’s the idea that MissoniHome strives to achieve, balancing the clean lines of its furnishing design with the comfort of home and how people live. Each piece is very soft and welcoming, without losing its shape. This goes for MissoniHome’s sofas, chairs, lamps and more. The new collection also incorporates other elements such as leather, PVC or wood to contrast with the material textures for a highly attractive effect and unusual perspective. New in this collection: leather sofas in classic shades, geometric/diamond-shaped poufs, chairs “dressed” in patchwork and chunky-knit rugs. For more information: missonihome.com
