Happy New Year! And what an exciting year 2013 is shaping up to be. Like always we will continue to bring you the biggest names across a wide swath of the entertainment, political and music industries. January we start off with a bang. As you can see, we have Fran Drescher on the cover. Everyone remembers her as The Nanny, but now she’s starring in the new hit show, Happily Divorced. Based loosely on her own marriage, it tells the tale of her exploits with her ex-husband. The show airs on TV Land and is as good a show as I’ve seen in a long time. We also have Charlie Rangel, the indelible Congressman from Harlem. After four decades in the House of Representatives he is still as witty, strong-willed and effective as ever; he sat down with us and it was one of the most interesting interviews I have ever conducted. Nathan Gunn, one of the best looking men in opera today, is also featured. With a rich baritone and a love for new and English-speaking roles, he has stormed New York. Over lunch, we talked of opera, his new interest in musical-theater, and his love of New York. I really enjoyed our time and thank him for speaking with us. I’m also excited to present Kitty Pilgrim’s ongoing travel column. For January she takes us on an Artic Adventure; all of her pieces will revolve us next. Talking about travel, we’ve outdone ourselves this month. From France, Aruba, Turks & Caicos, Vietnam and hidden New York spots, we have found and reported on only the best. I’ve interviewed a great many stars. From Broadway to the big screen and everything in between, we are constantly brining our readers’ new and informative interviews. With our January cover, we’ve outdone ourselves. Ms. Fran Drescher, of The Nanny Fame and now of Happily Divorced is this month’s cover feature. Known for her sharp tongue and equally endearing laugh, Fran has occupied the hearts of many New Yorkers for years. We’re so glad that she sat down with us to discuss her success, her new show, her work with the LGBT cancer. The whole time she was funny, warm and insightful. I hope you like the piece as much as I liked interviewing her. Happily Divorced airs on TV Land on Wednesdays at 10:30pm ET/PT through February 13th.

Resident: How does a New Yorker feel about living in LA? Fran Drescher: I have lived in LA more than I have lived in New York. I moved out here when I was 20, however, I have a place in New York as well, and they both offer unique aspects to living. I live on the beach here in LA and that is very special; I have the best of both worlds. R: Where in New York do you live? FD: On the Upper West Side R: What makes a New Yorker? FD: I always consider myself a New Yorker, once you are born and raised in New York that imprint never goes away. I feel proud to be a New Yorker; it is the greatest city in the world. The people are so warm and it’s just a pleasure, it’s such an exciting city, it’s European but it’s also 21st century. There is always so much to do; I always get overloaded when I am in New York because I want to do everything. I have to go back to the beach just to recharge before I start up again. I think also the New York accent is unique. I am from Flushing and it was a wonderful place to be. It is where Simon and Garfunkel grew up and their song “In My Little Town” is about where I grew up. R: You made a success of being a New Yorker in The Nanny, how was that experience? FD: The Nanny was an amazing opportunity and was embraced worldwide and continues to be loved all over the world. It was a very iconic show and character, which I am extremely grateful for to have not only created, produced and starred in, but to be a part of such a wonderful experience that makes people feel good and laugh makes me very proud. It acts out everything from being a New Yorker to blue-collar meets blueblood and everything that’s exciting about New York R: I have to ask because I’m such a big fan of you and The Nanny - is your laugh natural? FD: I guess the laugh is pretty natural. It wasn’t planned, it just sort of happened and it was a happy accident. I feel like it should say on my tombstone, “Fran made us laugh.” It surprises me how many people ask me to laugh for them. R: Now you are on a new show, Happily Divorced, how is that? Fran with her real exhusband, Peter Marc Jacobson, and John Michael Higgins who plays Peter on Happily Divorced.

FD: This season we have some major guest stars that give another lift to the show; the show has matured this season. We get to know the characters in a deeper way and so a lot of the comedy comes out because we have built a history with these people, a simple glance over
from Peter to me can get a laugh because people know who we are as people and what the character is thinking. That is very gratifying when a show takes on that kind of familiarity with the viewers. It’s a nice place to visit once a week. There is a lot of fabulous talent; it’s really great and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. It’s a lot of work but it’s very gratifying and I also think it has a social message that makes me proud as well. R: The show is inspired by your ex-husband who came out to you - how closely related is your reaction to your character’s reaction? FD: We were already divorced by the time he came out and I knew he was bi while we were still married. It was actually a relief to me because I was feeling guilty that I pushed through the divorce and he didn’t want it. By the time he came out I was already a cancer survivor and in love with another person. I was glad that something positive came out R: Can you tell us about you work in the LGBT community? FD: I am very forthright in speaking out about any group that is marginalized. Civil liberties are a very important platform to speak out on and make change for; otherwise we compromise what this country is based on. Gay civil liberties are one of the most important issues of our time. Anyone who can justify marginalizing that group simply because they are attracted to the same sex is the same thing as saying blacks should not marry whites and that women shouldn’t be allow to vote. It’s the same thing and there is no one group that can stand in judgment of another as long as they are not hurting anyone. The global message of my show is love is love. R: Tell us about your charity. FD: I founded Cancer Schmancer and it was a natural progression from The New York Times bestseller I wrote of the same title. We have attention to, which is prevention, early detection and policy change. We have a new program called Trash Cancer, which I urge all of your readers to check out because this is going to help Americans reduce their risk of cancer. Everyone should be aware of what they bring into their homes, what they eat, what they put on their skin and what they clean

I applaud her for her efforts on cancer and LGBT issues; we need good people with good solutions to move this country forward. I wish her the best of luck on her show, Happily Divorced, but I suspect that she is her to stay. A true New Yorker, she embodies all of the virtues we’ve come to love about this fair city – smarts, talent and chutzpah.

New York’s Charlie Rangel: Fighter & Congressman By Christopher A. Pape
Whether you agree or disagree with Charlie Rangel, you must respect him. Respect the fact that he’s been a Congressman for 44 years and has done much to help his district. Although no longer the Chairman of the Ways and Means committee, Mr. Rangel is still a force to be reckoned with. I sat down with the Representative to talk about New York, his proudest moments, moments he regrets and what it means to him to have an African-American as the President. I found out that Charlie is eloquent (I can understand why he’s won so many times), extremely knowledgeable and is the same age as my father! I really appreciate the time he afforded us and hope you like the piece as much as I liked interviewing him!

Resident (R): What does it mean to be a New Yorker?
R: How have you seen your district change
Charlie Rangel (CR): I don’t know anything else; I feel sorry for people who were born here, like me, because it doesn’t get any better. There is no town that we can go to that is as exciting - whether it’s Paris or Berlin or Tokyo. Wherever you go, different cultures have a lot to offer but no other place has all of them together and to know that you can at anytime fall into a culture is a beautiful thing. I was able to see the Mexicans and the Dominicans emigrate here and to be able to be a part of that assimilation is very exciting. My family comes from Virginia; my father abandoned my mother as a kid. I was raised right here in Manhattan. I had not known any Dominicans until they had come into Manhattan and that group, more than any other; I was able to help organize, to help
CR: The district has changed from the

congressional district was always expanding. However, there are many more Dominicans in the district than there used to be and so there have been changes, but not as much as in other districts and not enough to change the outcome of the last election. Yes, winter, not summer. Anyone can go in summer. In June, July and August, cruise ships plow through the slurry of melted ice all the way up to the North Pole – a luxury trip where tourists stand on deck and drink champagne.

My son Will, an accomplished cameraman agreed to arrange his schedule to come with me. So we collected our gear and headed off to the Norwegian Island of Svalbard.
This is literally the top of the earth. Flying to this region takes days. First there is a transatlantic leg from New York to Norway, then Oslo to Tromso, then on to Longyearbyen. From the plane window the landscape appears bleak. We see jagged snowy peaks the size of the Alps with no sign of civilization, and the daylight gets dimmer and dimmer.

After warming up, we decide to walk into town. There is 30 minutes of clothing layering – double snow pants, silk underwear, sweaters, double gloves, and three layers of socks - making sure that no skin is exposed. Frostbite is a serious concern. We waddle along the pristine landscape in our bulky polar boots. Snow squeaks with the dry crunch I remember from childhood. And the stars are brighter than I have ever seen. Sometimes in spring the Aurora The air is so pure with oxygen, I can almost drink it; ingesting the cold leaves a sharp burn, so I take shallow breaths. We walk into the village and explore the stores. Shopkeepers are delighted to meet new visitors. One massive structure serves as the general grocery and department store. Norwegian sweaters, we are tempted. But then realize that in our coddled Manhattan lives we will never again need this kind of gear. The town café serves as the hub of the village. It is steamy and warm as we enter and the luscious smell of food peaks our
appetites. Within minutes we are greeted and asked questions about New York. English is universally spoken, and we are made to feel right at home. Svalbard boasts several excellent restaurants, all serving local fare. Reindeer stew, hearty root vegetables, and soups. Deserts tend to feature tart lingonberries and rich chocolate. We wolf enormous portions of food at every opportunity. Calories are an asset in this frigid environment. A dogsled expedition is proposed and accepted. A truck collects us and we travel about ten miles out of town, picking up the handsome huskies and malamuts at a kennel along the way. The dogs bay and howl in the back as we drive, excited to be off and on an adventure. Our guide explains we will sled along a glacier about 25 miles out law, anyone venturing outside the village is required to carry a gun to protect themselves from the polar bears. As he drives, he casually mentions that a dog was mauled last night in the village and a helicopter has been dispatched to hover over the main street to chase stray polar bears away from the town, out onto the sea ice. With that sobering
information we start our expedition. dog sled. Controlling half-wild dogs takes strength, and balancing on the runners has all the challenge of snowboarding. The with a snow brake – a maneuver that requires great dexterity. I must drop a steel claw into the snow and stomp on it while the sled is in motion. That jerks the harness on the dogteam, forcing them to stop. They don’t like it, and buck and yowl every time they are halted. But they need to cool down every half hour by eating snow. When we start up again, I must bend over, pull up the brake while keeping my balance on the sled rungs. Incredibly, I manage without falling off. As we travel many miles from the village I am struck by how small I feel compared to this landscape. There is only the sound of the dogs baying, and the sled runners on the ice, and the metronome of my breath, cautiously drawn in, then exhaled in a mist of water vapor. T
he central Vietnamese city of Hoi An has been a stop on the international backpacker circuit for years now, many of its charming colonial row houses serving banana pancakes and selling silk sleeping bags to the gap-year adventure set. That’s not to say the UNESCO World Heritage City’s charms have been compromised—far from it. The pace here is much slower than in Vietnam’s motorbike-buzzing capitals, and the history feels more intact. Even though it’s no longer exactly a secret gem (it regularly shows up on best-Asian-cities lists in travel magazines), Hoi An still looks much like it did back in the 19th century, when it was a hub of seafaring trade with the Chinese and Japanese. The effects of time have only increased the courtyard houses’ appeal. Their architecture remains beguiling, and their dreamy lantern-lit facades still look much like they did a century ago.
What’s changing is its sophistication quotient. The ages, thanks to better restaurants and shopping, as well as greater accessibility. The nearby city of Da Nang is increasingly prosperous, and has a shiny new airport to prove it, and luxury airlines like Korean, Emirates and Etihad are adding long-haul service directly there. The boom is just beginning. Luxury hotels are spouting all along the coast between Da Nang itself and Hoi An—mostly big resorts and casinos designed to draw Chinese tourists, and not especially charming—and the area is trying to market itself as an alternative to famous beach destinations like Bali and Phuket (but without the nightclubs and full-moon parties, a plus or a minus, depending on your point of view). Whatever happens, it’s likely to lose some of its sleepy charm, so now is the time to go.

place. The villas are spectacular—very large renditions of a traditional Vietnamese garden houses with the main living, sleeping, and eating areas on a central raised platform. Some even have bathtubs sunken into the platform, and all have atmospheric mosquito netting and a generally seductive vibe. The outdoor showers are also a nice touch. The hotel’s food is excellent—I could have lived for four days eating nothing but the delectable tropical fruits and the fresh spring rolls served at the poolside Vietnamese restaurant—and its spa is among the best in
the region, with beautiful treatment pavilions and wonderfully relaxing treatments, like the Vietnamese massage that uses long, deep strokes. On the subject of wonderfully relaxing, Vietnam’s old imperial capital of Hue (about three hours from Hoi An) is blissfully slow-paced and often shrouded in mist. The body of water that bisects it is called the Perfume River—what could be more romantic than that? Even though it has clearly entered the 21st century, it’s not so bustling that taking a city tour by cyclo feels like you’re taking your life in your hands (or your driver’s bike-pedaling legs, as the case may be) It’s as evocative a vision of history as any E.M. there’s no nightlife, and I didn’t see a shred of backpacker culture.
Rather, it’s a place where people go when they know what they’re looking for. Hue’s abundance of UNESCO World Heritage history, architecture, and art. The Nguyen are buried in artful “tombs,” which are more like temple complexes, where the central mausoleums are surrounded by gardens, palaces, walls, courtyards, and pavilions. They also built a massive citadel, a rambling temples, gardens, ponds, gates, and halls. My guide called the citadel’s Imperial City a “sublime interpretation of the larger, more austere dynastic capital at Beijing.” Restoration efforts are well under way, but I was more drawn to the romantically crumbling structures. It’s also a spiritual center, dotted with more than 300 pagodas (monasteries) that have a
palpable sense of calm about them and are the reason that Hue is known as the “soul of Vietnam.” The most powerful of these is Tu Hieu, once home to the renounced Zen teacher Thich Nhat Hanh. You don’t need to adhere to any spiritual tradition to feel how peaceful it is here. But my favorite excursion was to An Dinh Palace, a French-style royal residence on the Perfume River built by a Nyugen emperor for a crown prince, whose mother lived in the home until her death. The recently restored palace isn’t open to visitors yet, but the La Residence hotel will soon be able to arrange for guests to have barbecue dinners or cocktails there. That’s just one reason to book at La Residence: The Art Deco jewel, part of which was once a governor’s residence, has comfortable rooms, friendly and very
competent service, a groovy lobby bar, an ambitious restaurant, and a surprisingly rigorous spa (the signature massage involves turns pulls toxins out of the body). The best, most distinctive accommodations among the 122 rooms and suites are in the original governor’s residence, particularly the two round rooms. Puerto Rico has become one of the premier holiday and vacation destinations for millions of U.S. Mainlanders. Flights to the Caribbean island are frequent with a host of options and because it is part and parcel of the United States, entering, leaving and currency are not a problem. Flights from the three New York/New Jersey area airports provide a wide range of options. This trip out we were airlines, Jet Blue with a schedule from JFK and Newark. Jet Blue, which began not so many years ago as a small, regional airline, has grown into an international carrier that never lost sight of the need to respect passengers and provide service. Landing in San Juan is somewhat akin to looking down at New York City. The Puerto Rican capital is a major, humming city with freeways that are always heavily traveled. Fortunately on this visit our hotel, the Verdanza, was literally within sight of Luis Munoz Marin International Airport, a large and modern facility. Popular with both business and recreational clientele, the Verdanza is so well constructed that noise from the landing not heard at all. These solid and foreboding battlements are a testament even today as to why the San Juan harbor was virtually impregnable to attack. While many who visit Puerto Rico choose to remain in the San Juan area, those in the know will also reserve some time on the opposite side of the island in Ponce. Our Rico Sun Tours driver, Micah, was absolutely Johnny on the spot and was a fountain of information and trivia about his city. Micah was as well versed on the countryside as we drove from San Juan to Ponce through lush mountains, unfortunately skirting the island’s famed El Yunque rain forest (for another time). Accommodations at the Ponce Hilton were quality golf course is world famous and a major attraction for visitors from around the world. One side trip was of great interest despite the location’s name. We were headed to Isla Caja de Muertos, which translates to Island of the Box of the Dead…more commonly There was no pirate legend or ghost story behind the island’s name. It simply looked with white sand beaches and covered picnic tables. There are water activities ranging from swimming and snorkeling to kayaking.

Lunch was prepared on the dock in a relaxing atmosphere. Ponce’s art museum is world class, designed by Edward Durrell Stone, the mastermind behind New York’s famed Museum of Modern Art. The museum offers more than 1,000 paintings and some 400 unique sculptures with works by Velasquez, Rubens, and Gainsborough. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and suggest you visit it. Shopping in Ponce’s downtown district provides everything from kitschy souvenirs to quality clothing. While liquor is available here and in local supermarkets, you are better off making those purchases at the airport where the prices are roughly the same. Remember, you cannot take bottles of liquor through TSA security as it will be of some security agent. An interesting side trip on the way back to San Juan was at the Lucero Coffee Plantation only a few minutes off the highway. This is not primarily a tourist stop but is an actual working plantation. Since my birthday is in January, I have spent a lifetime seeking to escape the dark days and snowbound times associated with the winter months. Turning snow to sand and scenery in Aruba is a perfect choice for such a getaway.

The Aruban air approach literally has a beach view --- running alongside the airstrip during approach, providing for a unique entrée to the sun, sand and surf. Having a dinner meeting at Simply Fish, the onbeach restaurant of the Aruba Marriott, gives fresh meaning to the phrase “dinner meeting.” Diners are encouraged to leave their sandals or sneakers (forget about shoes) on shoe racks and to wander a few feet to tables set in the pristine sand. The prawns in the tiger shrimp cocktail (served with both classic shrimps sauce and a fresh mango jalapeno dressing) are eclipsed in size only by the spectacular sunsets, which are beautifully without occlusion. The Aruban (“not Bermuda!” waitstaff joke) triangle introductory survey to the island’s most grilled, for the natural to stand out (with red curry and coconut sauce), prompting diners to nearly ignore the fresh spinach, mashed potato and avocado sides. Beach time is obvious, but jeep excursions on the windward side of the island (only available by off-roading) provide an opportunity to visit the island’s California light house, the enchanting Alta Vista Chapel (which has tourists, as well as locals, engaged in thoughtful meditation and prayer) and a drive along the coast through the Arikok National Park and a stop for a swim in Aruba’s “natural pool” (a quiet swimmable space between rocks, nestled just off the aquamarine beach). The wiseacre in me notes that a natural bridge was a tourist attraction that was formed naturally out of coral limestone. The landmark collapsed on September 2, 2005, but shortly thereafter, a smaller natural bridge emerged (De Palm Jeep Tour Guide Gio says locals call this the “Son of A Bridge”). Similarly, those who are willing to tear themselves from the beach at sunset may want to consider a catamaran sunset cruise with Red Sail Sports. An excellent post-activity rehabilitation is available at the Aruba Marriott’s Mandara Spa. A friend who is a restauranteur has commented that dinner at a beautiful destination should be an experience, as well as a meal, so here are two options. At the Screaming Eagle, South Beach meets French Fusion cuisine. Dinner parties may opt for traditional tables or to be served by the pair “in bed,” with dinner trays that are reminiscent of the Nick and Nora Thin Man movies. There are canopies and curtains for “bedsitters.” Chef Erwin Hüsken’s preparations range

New England; pieces of Americana From ice cream to whaling ships By Bob & Sandy Nesoff First there was Johnny Damon the Mountain Man who came to the New York Yankees shorn of his shoulder-length hair and beard that obscured his face. This year he is followed by Kevin Youklis with moustache and chin whiskers about to be shaved off to meet the grooming standards of the Yankees. Coincidentally, there have been reported sightings of a Big Foot-like creature throughout New England. Coincidence? Maybe. But while these hairy creatures from Boston make their way south the Yankee Stadium, curiosity seekers from New York have been heading north to the New England woods in hopes of spotting Big Foot themselves.

Manhattanites trooping through the Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire woods looking for a sevenfoot tall creature with red, glowing eyes making sounds like a pig in heat may be less dangerous than wandering some of the borough’s back alleys, but it far more exciting.
To say that history abounds in Boston is an understatement. There is something here for virtually everybody. Visit the oldest commissioned warship in the U.S. Navy, the wooden Constitution. Commissioned in 1797 the ship is still considered an active Navy vessel and is manned by active duty Navy personnel. The Constitution, a solid three-master, was knick named “Old Ironsides” during the War of 1812 when British cannon balls bounced off her thick oak sides.
New England has become a familiar playground to many New Yorkers because of the ease of getting there with an extensive highway network and the lowering of gas prices in recent months.
The ship is in pristine condition. But, if the truth be told, there is actually very little remaining of the original timbers after 215 years. But unless you are a purist, this won’t matter or spoil the visit.

For those who remember Camelot in Washington and the heady days of the Kennedy Administration, a stop at the Union Oyster House in the Fanuel Hall area, is a must. As a congressman and senator, John F. Kennedy made it a ritual to have Sunday breakfast at the Union every week. He had a reserved booth and would sit sipping coffee and eating while reading his local newspaper. Today the booth is designated with a marker plaque and special guests are given the honor of being seated there. Several times each day Indians raid the vessel and dump crates into the river. The reenactment of the Boston Tea Party is often greeted with amazement by the kids and some indifference from the older set. The religious leader, Cotton Mather and his family, are buried there as is political power Daniel Malcolm. His headstone makes note of his rebel activism against the crown. British soldiers took offense at the wording and used the stone for target practice. Near Lincoln and Concord in Massachusetts and not far from Boston is the small body of water made famous in a poem by Henry David Thoreau, Walden Pond. Thoreau took the naturalist beliefs of Transcendentalism out of the realm of theory and into practice when he built his cabin at Walden Pond.

How about Dearborn, Michigan? The Ford Motor Company’s annual trend conference in Dearborn, Michigan, offers reasons why. Ford’s presence in Detroit and the surrounding suburbs is unmistakable.
Opening night festivities included a keynote discussion by Henry’s great-grandson, Bill, at the quaint Ford Field football stadium. Environmentalism and green technology dominated the speech and subsequent discussion. Ford predicted that by 2020 up to a quarter of its vehicles would be electric. Ford Field is the home to the NFL Team Detroit Lions. We strolled along the Adams Street in the stadium with its charming shops and bar-restaurants.

Transcending the Opera World
By Christopher A. pApe Nathan Gunn is a handsome man; People Magazine agrees as he was voted one of the “Sexiest Men Alive” in 2008. But beyond that, he is one of the most in demand operatic baritones in the world. Yet this boy from the Midwest having sung all over the world – loves and continues to come back to New York and the Met, where he began his career. We sat down over lunch and talked of opera, musical theater (his new passion) and what he loves about our fair city. The whole time he was a pleasure to speak to. Make sure to catch Nathan at the Met for his upcoming performance in Le Comte Ory by Rossini and at Avery Fisher Hall for a concert staging of Carousel, which he performs with Kelli O’Hara. I hope you like the piece as much as I liked interviewing him. Resident (R): How did a boy from the Midwest get into opera? Nate Gunn (NG): when it comes to opera they are looking for voices. I was always asked to be in choir and musicals so my mother suggested I take voice lessons. Then one day, my vocal coach told me about an opera workshop and asked if I’d like to sing Papageno, from Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and that started the ball rolling. While studying at the University Of Illinois – I was a Although I didn’t win it, one of the judges ran the Young Artist Program at the Met and the National Council Auditions and told me that I should sing in the Met’s competition. And I did and won, which brought me here to New York. R: You won the regional level? NG: No. I won the whole thing. R: Wow! That’s amazing!

NG: They asked me to be in the Young Artist Program and I accepted; I went from a little town in the Midwest to New York and it was scary. R: That’s fantastic. What roles did you learn and what is your repertoire? NG: Rossini, Mozart and Britten are probably the three composers that I sing the most. I sing a lot of Bel Canto roles and I also love new operatic pieces. I just love creating roles, whether they are new or old. Recently, I’ve been doing a lot with some of my Broadway friends like Kelli O’Hara and Mandy Patinkin and that’s opened up an entirely different repertoire for me; I love singing in English. Preserving the American Songbook is very important. R: You have two big events this month; can you tell us about that? NG: I’m very excited. I’ll be at the Met, in their production I’m performing it. I’ll be at Avery Fisher Hall with the NY Philharmonic in a concert staging of Carousel. It’s very hard, for someone like me, to sing on Broadway; our schedules just don’t match up; that’s why I’m looking forward to working with Kelli in this Carousel concert. R: Who has been your favorite person to work with? NG: While I’ve never worked with him on the stage, Placido Domingo, as a conductor is fantastic; one of my operatic baritone heroes, who sang a lot of my repertoire, but is a couple of generations older than me – he’s a friend of mine – Sir Thomas Allen. I’ve also had the pleasure of working with Susan Graham, Renée Fleming and Joyce DiDonato, who are all fantastic. In the world of musical theater, Mandy Patinkin and I did a show together; I love working with him and he’s 1000% all of the time. R: Favorite Opera? NG: Billy Budd by Benjamin Britten. The story was a novella by Herman Melville. It’s a great story and a great opera; sung in English and I feel so lucky that I’ve had the opportunity to sing Billy. I actually won the Grammy for a recording of my Billy performance. R: Turning to a slightly different question: you’re not a native New Yorker, but tell us what you love about the city? NG: I’ve spent so much time in the city. I do have to say I love Chicago; it’s a beautiful town, very Midwestern. I do a lot of charitable work there; the city is close to my home – I live in Champaign, Illinois. My wife and I spend much of our time working with inner-city schools; we teach them the importance of the arts. But when I come to New York, it’s like coming home. Every time I come here, I head straight to a dinner; I love matzo ball soup and listening to people argue or send their order back because the bacon isn’t crispy enough. When I come to perform at the Met, I know all of the security guards; I know everyone that works backstage and they all know me. I love having all of my colleagues here; the Met is the

We had an absolutely amazing December here at The Elvis Duran Morning Show - busy as ever! My highlight was hosting NYC’s highly anticipated 2012 Z100 Jingle Ball Concert at MSG. The show is definitely Z100’s “crown jewel” and has truly become one of the hottest holiday “must attend” events here in Manhattan. This year’s line-up was electrifying thanks to the biggest artists in the world all agreeing to perform at one exclusive concert: Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Ne-Yo, One Direction and The Wanted, just to name a few!

In addition to Z100’s New York Jingle Ball concert, I also hosted our Philadelphia Q102 Jingle Ball concert, the Y100 Jingle Ball concert in Miami, then ended my wild musical trip by hosting our very first Power 96.1 Jingle Ball concert in Atlanta. As always, there are so many moving parts “behind the scenes” during these monster concerts and it’s always an honor to be a part of musical history. I look forward to the backstage excitement that is bound to happen during Jingle Ball season. Here is an exclusive glimpse of what goes on:
Justin is such a good friend of the show. It’s been great to watch him step up his musical game this year and continue to grow as an artist. I’ve witnessed many young talents rise to the top, but Justin is dedicated and determined to be the very best at what he does - for himself and for his fans. Recently, there have been various media reports about Justin, yet I can attest that he is a true gentleman who is always pleasant backstage and will show up on time to give an amazing performance, despite whatever other distractions may be going on offstage. I was happy to have had the opportunity to catch up with him during the show and, once again, witness his positive energy. He’s a true professional.
Let us all profess our love for Ne-Yo. I cannot even begin to express the level of talent that exudes from this guy. Ne-Yo really knows how to make a memorable impression for his fans while performing. People were out of their chairs dancing, screaming, singing - you can’t help it! He has a knack for getting everyone to feel the music. Ne-Yo is a great friend, so I also loved having him on our radio show the morning of Z100’s New York Jingle Ball concert to kick off the day! I hear we can expect to continue see great things from him…
By now, all of my listeners know that our morning show has a crush on these British pop stars. There is a lot of competition out there, but these boys never fail to get everyone pumped with their highenergy performance. I even got a personal shout-out during their set at MSG. It’s fast becoming tradition for me to go wish them luck backstage before they go on and every time I enter their dressing room, they all erupt with excitement and we share tons of laughs (at their expense of course!) We even had a Lindsay Lohan sighting in their dressing room a few times. We’ll leave it at that.
I LOVE ED!!!! This guy is just fantastic. Ed was such a nice guy that he went out of his way to make sure I met him before his performance at the Jingle Ball concert. I could immediately tell that he has what it takes to maintain longevity in this cut throat business. We had a lot of fun catching up backstage and it was incredible to hear how passionately everyone was screaming for him. Between us, the screams actually sounded loudest for him out of all the performers! That said, we had more requests for “meet and greets” with Ed than any other artist performing that evening. Please become a fan - I know I am!!! Enrique is obviously at the top of our Elvis Duran and The Z100 Morning Show “crush list.” He is extremely dedicated to his craft, but exciting and memorable with his unique humor and pranks. This year, Enrique brought his beautiful girlfriend, Anna Kournikova, to one of the shows. We always love to see Anna (Hello! She is gorgeous!), but I personally think Enrique may be a little prettier. Luckily for me, the feeling is quite mutual (as you can see, Enrique decided to lick my ear). That’s got to mean something, right?? Year after year, it’s truly an honor to have a job that I love and which allows me to interact with the most talented musicians in the world. Muddled New Plays on the Boards
By Barry Bassis The new season has not been promising for new plays on and off-Broadway. Revivals are a different matter. (Highly recommended revivals include “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” with Chita Rivera and “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf ” with a revelatory performance by Tracy Letts). “The Good Mother,” a new work by Francine Volpe, stars the estimable Gretchen Moll as Larissa. The only question the drama, directed by Scott Elliott, generates is how many mistakes Larissa will make before the show ends. The action starts with the single mother giving instructions to her teenage babysitter (Eric Nelsen) about caring for her 4-year old autistic daughter (whom the audience never sees). It turns out that the babysitter’s father (Mark Blum) had been Larissa’s therapist when she was an adolescent. She looked him up because he is embroiled in a sexual scandal with one of his patients and at his house, she met his troubled son, who dresses like a member of the Addams family. Does that sound like special needs child? Larissa’s next mistake is bringing back her date, a trucker (Darren Goldstein) she had just met in a bar, for a one-night stand. The babysitter watches them through a window and Larissa allegedly learns that he may have molested
the next day meets with the boy’s father, again, not the smartest move. Larissa’s errors continue but the promised suspense never occurs and there is no satisfying resolution.
Theresa Rebeck’s “Dead Accounts” has a major asset: Norbert Leo Butz, who is on stage most of the time and has the ability to make almost any line generate laughs. “The Anarchist” has to be the biggest disappointment of the season. Penned by Glen Ross” is being revived) and also directed by him, the two-character work stars Patti LuPone and Debra Winger (making her Broadway debut). Mamet said in a New York Times article that the play is based on the Brink’s robbery by the Weathermen and the subsequent incarceration and ultimate release on parole of Kathy Boudin. The play is a meeting between the prisoner (LuPone) and her longtime caseworker (Winger). Mamet leaches any drama out of the confrontation by turning it into a rather dry debate about the prisoner’s conversion to Christianity and her lesbianism. LuPone has the more compelling role and wins the few laughs in the script. Since Winger is known for her ability in movies to burrow into each of her characters, one must assume that her wooden line readings are attributable to the director. Though only 70 minutes, by the end most of the audience wanted release as much as the prisoner.

His character, Jack, arrives late at night at his parents’ home in Cincinnati. He brings many containers of local ice cream, which he ingests with gusto and lauds in elaborate detail. At the same time, he makes cracks about New York, where he works in a bank and is unhappily married to a blueblood. His father, whom the audience never sees, is dying, but the reason Jack shows up is because he has embezzled $27 million from the bank. The other characters are his unmarried sister Lorna (Katie Holmes), their mother (Jayne Houdyshell) and a friend (Josh Hamilton), who carries the torch for Lorna. Jack’s wife Jenny (Judy Greer) also appears for an acrimonious scene. Rebeck script has numerous laugh are muddled. Like the dying father, they

But this most recent apocalypse averted got me to ruminating, as is my want, about New Year’s Eve and all the weight that is arbitrarily attached to this one night’s passage of time. It took me back to last New Year’s Eve and a question asked me, “What’s your resolution?” Maybe it was one too many Ketel One Koolers, I replied, “to not die.” But on further rumination that’s not true. Can you tell from my answer that I possess a cheery optimism? As is exhibited by the response from said person above after hearing the answer, “Boy, aren’t you a ray of sunshine!” I think that was her response, because the DJ was cranking the 89th house mix of “I Want Candy.” So, it could have been that or “Why don’t you drink a glass of turpentine.” Since the sentiment of both statements is pretty much the same, I choose the more positive. See, I’m not that much of a pessimist. But I digress. It seems that my focus along with my 36-waist size was left behind in 2011. Who am I kidding? My waist hasn’t been a 36 since NBC boasted “Miami Vice in Stereo.”

What was my point? Oh...the answer to the question posed to me. It has to do with my philosophy on life. I don’t see the glass as half empty or half full. I see the glass as broken on in my carpet that I’ll never be able to get out no matter how hard I try. And months later, I will be walking barefoot on my carpet, and a shard will stick in my foot. It being dirty, I will get an infection. This will start a long process of amputation to preserve my “quality of life” only for me to end up in a bed jealous of Richard Dreyfuss’s character’s lot in “Whose Life Is It Anyway?” Here’s the Kevorkian cocktail nightcap. The woman I put this to on that New Year’s Eve still wanted me to buy her a drink? Who says love is dead? Maybe there is still hope? Let me be clear. My kicking off has nothing to do with my curmudgeon’s attitude toward Baby New Year. There’s also no “to die to sleep” mishigas. Will I be, or won’t I be? That doesn’t interest me. Though for some reason, if it’s the former I’m reminded of the Woody Allen line on reincarnation: Great, I’ll have to sit through the Ice Capades again. No, what gets my GERD going about me avoiding 365 days of potential tragedy is that others I care
about may not, and THAT’S the killer. Yes, I must pun. And the older I get and avoid the Big Sleep the more the people I have cared about have not. “Have cared” the present perfect tense really is the most heartless. No, no, don’t say that. It’s not about survivor guilt. I don’t believe in it. I believe in survivor lost my mother, father and a wife, but that last one was intentional. Now, just imagine if people might have even said some nice things won’t know, or I’ll know everything. I prefer Socrates’ rationalization of shot gunning the hemlock as opposed to Hamlet whining about should he or shouldn’t he off himself. Pick a side. Who are you the Mitt Romney of Denmark? So let it be known before all. I am changing my New Year’s Resolution of 2011. In 2013, I won’t mind kicking off. Of course, perhaps by saying that I may be hoping for the old reverse jinx.
