B

eing a lifelong New Yorker—having grown up visiting the city’s countless treasures while watching it all change and evolve—naturally, I’ve had a lot of fun working on this issue. It meant revisiting old and new favorites and being reminded of the many, many things that make New York the colorful, exciting, energetic, truly one-of-a-kind city it is.

Creating this Best of New York issue also meant sitting down face-to-face with some of the people who are the heart, soul, and center of the city. How lucky am I to have gotten to talk to the New Yorkers I admire—the people who inspire, dress, feed, and entertain us?

Through my work on this issue, I got to eat the best burger in New York with the man who invented gourmet burgers (eating the Black Label Burger with Pat LaFrieda at Minetta Tavern felt a little like watching a Yankee game with Derek Jeter); I got to chat about karaoke spots and killer coffee with an incredibly down-toearth Broadway star; I received a bear hug from the sweetest dog I’d ever met—who happened to belong to one of the fashion world’s most iconic designers; and one of New York’s funniest made me laugh about his humble beginnings in New York, and what’s it’s like to lie to Amy Schumer in order to get out of a gig.

Of course it’s very fitting that our Best of New York cover belongs to Nicole Miller—a woman who has been dressing New Yorkers (and the world’s best-dressed) for decades. During the photo shoot at her beautiful Tribeca loft, everyone had a personal story to share with her—Nicole Miller homecoming dresses and various items of clothing that she’s designed and we have worn and loved. When the shoot was done and the cameras were packed away, she shared stories with me about everything from post-Fashion-Week trips to Disney World with her staff members to how she turned a store-bought Halloween costume into a runwayworthy showstopper. Needless to say, I enjoyed every minute of it.

Finally, as we head into the height of foliage and pumpkin-flavored-everything season— which I happen to love—we got to explore the best ways to fill your days with fall’s flavors and colors, within the city and beyond.

It’s been an exciting month, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of fall brings—and to share the Best of New York with you.

You’ve probably seen the triangular cut-out of a jacko-lantern. You may have seen the more intricate profile of a moonlit vampire. But have you seen a three-dimensional zombie reaching out with its crooked limbs, its life-sized body carved from a 1,800-pound pumpkin? At the Giant Pumpkin Carving Weekend, you’ll find just that. Food Network’s Ray Villafane will lead the live performance, with Q&A to follow, while onlookers enjoy snacks from Whole Foods Market.

Since its construction in 1832, the Old Merchants House has seen almost two centuries’ worth of life walk its halls, open its windows, and drag Duncan Phyfe side chairs across its floors. Today, visitors can still experience the energy of this place—the residence where eight Tredwell family members died—at the Candlelight Ghost Tours. During the 50-minute walk of the house, you’ll hear stories of strange occurrences told by the witnesses who experienced them.

Ingredients: ice cubes 3 oz ginger beer 1 oz Kahlúa Pumpkin Spice 1 lime sliced in wedges Directions: In a chilled glass, add ice cubes and ginger beer. Top with Kahlúa Pumpkin Spice and a wedge of lime. Serve immediately.

Ingredients: 1 pumpkin 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon Optional: crumbled blue cheese, maple balsamic, or other topping of your choice Directions: Preheat oven to 350°F. Slice pumpkin in half, then remove seeds. Peel off pumpkin skin using a potato peeler.

Cut pumpkin into 1/4-1/2-inch strips.

Mix together the olive oil and seasonings in a bowl. Dip pumpkin strips in the bowl so they’re coated in the mixture.

Place fries on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Roast fries for 15 minutes or until tender. Raise temperature to 400°F and broil the fries for another 3 minutes until they’re nice and crispy. Top fries with crumbled blue cheese, drizzled balsamic, or another topping of your choice.

Red carpet arrivals at the Centerpiece Night Gala Presentation at the 53rd New York Film Festival on October 3rd will include Michael Fassbender—the star of Steve Jobs, the feature film based on Walter Isaacson’s 2011 biography—as well as his co-stars Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen, Jeff Daniels, Michael Stuhlbarg, Katherine Waterston, Perla Haney-Jardine, Sarah Snook, Adam Shapiro and others. On October 6th, the Film Society of Lincoln Center will host “An Evening with Kate Winslet”—a benefit for the Film Society, which includes dinner and an intimate conversation between the Academy Award-winning actress and NYFF Director Kent Jones.

The Directors Guild of America will honor director-producer Ron Howard, director-writerproducer Tyler Perry, film editor Thelma Schoonmaker, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer, and Teamsters Local 817 president Thomas J. O’Donnell at the 2015 DGA Honors. The event will be held at the DGA Theater (110 West 57th Street) on October 15th at 7:00 p.m., with red carpet arrivals at 6:00 p.m. and VIP after-party at Nobu 57 at 8:30 p.m. Alan Cumming will host the event, and Bryce Dallas Howard, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Alec Baldwin will be among the presenters.

Before Pan—the Warner Bros. Pictures film directed by Joe Wright—debuts nationwide on October 9th, the legendary Ziegfeld Theater will host the film’s U.S. premiere on October 4th. Attendees will include Hugh Jackman (Blackbeard), Levi Miller (Peter), Oscar-

nominee Rooney Mara (Tiger Lily), Garrett Hedlund (James Hook), and the director, among others.

“TimesTalks Presents Guillermo del Toro,” featuring the visionary director-writer-producer of Pan’s Labyrinth, is taking place on October 13th at 7:00 p.m. at the TimesCenter (242 West 41st Street). Del Toro will discuss his new film, Crimson Peak, from Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures starring Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska, and Charlie Hunnam. The limited-engagement preview performances for Thérèse Raquin—the new Broadway play directed by Evan Cabnet and based on the novel by Émile Zola—will begin on October first at Studio 54 (254 West 54th Street). Having completed his BFA at the Parsons School of Design and claimed the runner-up title in Project Runway: Under The Gunn, Donovan is already an established presence in the world of fashion. He has showed his work in cities around the country— from Boston to Cincinnati to Denver—and his confidence continues to define a firm creative direction, one inspired in-part by artist Georgia O’Keeffe: “Joan Didion defined Georgia O’Keeffe’s work as ‘defiantly feminine,’ and I like the idea of a defiant femininity or defiance in general, dissention, but doing it in a beautiful way. I don’t think that being a rebel has to be harsh.”

His pieces accentuate color, print, and texture as well as sustainability— Donovan has a “zero waste ethic”—and possess a “slouchy,” wearable quality; they’re ready-to-wear clothes women can easily introduce into their wardrobes. Recently, however, the designer has been experimenting with more “dramatic” pieces, and his upcoming collection will feature some surprises, definitely “more gowns than usual.”

You won’t find chicken and waffles on the brunch menu (buttermilk fried chicken is available at dinner service), but the fried pork chop and cheddar waffles is a delicious alternative that is juicy, tender, and perfectly breaded. We also recommend the pecan pie French toast, which, with its triangular slices reclining in a pool of bourbon and molasses, looks more like a five-star dessert. Buttermilk Channel also offers mimosas and four kinds of bloody Marys. Need we say more?

Next, we head to Williamsburg for a modernchic brunch overlooking the New York skyline.

The chopped salad here is like a canvas of its own, with neat rows of alfalfa sprouts, fava beans, wheat berries, pickled parsnips and carrots, asparagus, and sunflower seeds laid out on the plate and finished with a tarragon vinaigrette. Another hidden after-sunset gem on the east side lurks beneath a large hot dog suspended high in the air—the entrance to cellar-level Crif Dogs. And yet another unmarked door—this time beyond the entry way titled “Village Yokocho”— separates the sidewalk passersby and oblivious tourists from Angel’s Share. But those who know the way take the stairwell upstairs, to a modern Japanese restaurant, and open the wooden door with an antique, embellished handle the shape of a hand fan. The oldfashioned décor continues into the bar, where a painting spanning the length of the counter looks over goblets and martini glasses. It depicts an angel with a clear message: “Shhhhhhh.”

It certainly has nothing to do with law and everything to do with quality drinks. Look for the small black awning, then ring the doorbell—a white button where, it seems, a door handle used to be—to summon a dapper host, who will proceed to escort your party to a table. Or, take your conversation outside to the intimate back garden, likewise evoking nostalgia for a different age. Lastly, make sure to closely examine the wallpaper; you’ll be surprised at the details that make this speakeasy as authentic as it is diverting.

The Broadway Star Takes on Zombies on TV’s Hottest Show

rom the bright lights of Broadway to the dusty roads of rural Georgia, The Walking Dead’s Tovah Feldshuh has led a fascinating journey. For forty years, she’s entertained audiences on the New York stage with her golden voice and captivating performances. At age 60, the Tony and Emmy-nominated actress suspended 30 feet in the air from a trapeze without a harness or a net in Pippin. She won hearts and accolades as Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in the longest running one-woman play on Broadway, Golda’s Balcony. She’s an adventurer whose wanderlust has taken her the world over, from India to Peru and Africa, where she climbed Kilimanjaro earlier this year, simply because she still could.

Now with instant recognition as Deanna Monroe, the leader of Alexandria on AMC’s The Walking Dead (TWD), this New Yorker is loving life. When I arrived at her Upper West Side apartment, I expected her to be dressed like her character: donning a crisp pantsuit and bright lipstick, hair firmly in place. Instead, Ms. Feldshuh sauntered in sporting her workout clothes, her hair in a bun and a smile on her lips. She had just returned from her summer home fresh from yoga class and a half-mile swim. She was warm, friendly, and inviting—all of the qualities that make her endearing on the series in which she debuted in Season 5.

Resident sat down with Feldshuh to discuss The Walking Dead, her upcoming projects, and the daily exercise regimen that helps her stay fit to battle zombies, should the walls of Alexandria fall.

You’re on one of the hottest shows and already have a big fan base. What made you transition from Broadway to television?

Being on Broadway is appreciated, but it’s local talent. You get good tables and invited to the Mayor’s house, but it’s hard to sell out concerts in Iowa, unless you win a Tony on national TV. Television actors are in a powerful position in New York because we sell seats. It’s a bilateral gift. We bring a lot to them, and they give us a lot.

In the comic book, the leader of Alexandria is Douglas Monroe. Why do you think the showrunner, Scott Gimple, decided to change the role to a woman?

TF: I don’t know, but I feel fortunate to be chosen. It was Scott Gimple’s desire, and they were only meeting women. For Deanna’s

LS: Tell us about your experience of being on the set of The Walking Dead.

LS: What has been most memorable on set?

TF: My most memorable moment was being flown in from Cartagena, Colombia on Monday and shooting a nine page scene on Tuesday and Wednesday. It’s where Rick and Deanna meet for the first time, and this was also happening in real life. We pulled it off, and AMC was pleased. I am glad I was trained on the stage.

TF: I love the people, the caliber of the work LS: What has been your biggest challenge? and the kindness of the people in Atlanta.

It’s worth the heat, better than the cold here.

There’s such a love affair going on the set; a lot of it has to do with Andrew Lincoln. He makes people family; the whole cast and crew is like a family. When the beloved character Hershel was killed, everybody wore

TF: I think what is coming up; how intellectual Deanna is going to stay and how physical she needs to become to survive. How much of a warrior does she need to be to make it through the day? That was interesting and challenging and I am grateful that I am an athlete. I’m

Deanna Monroe is a congresswoman from Ohio; Hillary is from the Midwest. The character is intellectual; Hillary is brilliant.

She’s undaunted and she is not defeated by her defeats. So is Deanna Monroe. Deanna is like Diana, the goddess of the hunt. She was nothing like that at the beginning. She could’ve been called Athena, the goddess of knowledge. She was offering this band of marvelous, honorable pirates, Rick Grimes and his group, safety, structure, and education—the beginnings of culture. They were offering her brawn in a world that really exists outside the walls of Alexandria.

The reason TWD has such appeal is because a bunch of desperate and separated groups of people, some of whom are decent, some are killers, are trying to survive, while heavily outnumbered by a force that threatens to end all life as we know it. We are back in the situation of 9/11, back in the Middle East for sure, where democracy is outnumbered. Under this endless stream of threat, who acts like a human being? Who is the Andy Lincoln, and who acts like an animal?

I love the theater, but I have explored it and had the honor of being on the marquee for 40 years. LS: Where are you off to next?

TF: My next trip is to Madagascar to track orangutans and lemurs. My husband and I want to go to New Guinea and Borneo. Finally, I am hoping to go to Mongolia. After that, I’ve pretty much touched my bucket list.

LS:

How are you balancing your two lives between New York and Georgia now?

TF: I am a dyed-in-the-wool New Yorker. I

LS: What is your next project?

Happiness is a choice, and I have become a devout student of yoga. You slow down the breath to dig deep into the river of common human existence and then time is lost. People use drugs or alcohol to feel good, but Kilimanjaro does that for you, nature does that.

LS: In an actual zombie apocalypse, which character(s) would you like on your side?

He can’t do it alone, but of course, Andrew Lincoln. He’s had a terrible journey on the show, but he tries to maintain his humanity. He comes from measured intelligence, logic; he tries to hold onto his mind and, when it’s very clear, he kills people the way he kills Pete. I mean, the struggle between him and Shane in the first season, those days have changed for him. He wants to preserve and protect his children. I’d want to be with Andy. He is easy to get on, and he loves people so much.

LS: The trailer for Season 6 makes us believe TF: Flesh and Bone (premiering on Starz on that Rick Grimes might turn bad. What should we expect in the upcoming season?

TF: The series gets darker and darker. Scott

Finding Neverland’s Star Talks Broadway and Beyond

By Pamela Jacobs and Olia Golovkina Grammy Award and three Tonys. She then claimed the role in the San Francisco production, and in 2011, made the big move to Broadway.

In 2013, while playing the role of Emma Carew in Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical on Broadway, Wicks was described as “outstanding and captivating” and “supremely memorable,” and multiple reviews said Wicks “stole the show.”

Throughout her career, the word “enchanting” has been used to describe her, both on stage and off. We agree.

We got the chance to sit down with the talented singer and performer and discuss her path to Broadway, as well as her career’s future. We found a charismatic, approachable, kind person who, no doubt, is headed for even bigger things.

Olia Golovkina: What do you like most about your character [Mary Barrie]?

ames Matthew Barrie is a disappointed writer whose latest play is a disaster. Sylvia Llewelyn Davies, a widow who recently lost her husband to cancer, is the single mother of four boys. The six meet one day at Kensington Gardens in London. They play. They create their own magical realm. Months later, Barrie puts on a play unlike any other; the story of Peter Pan, or the Boy Who Would Not Grow Up goes on to ripple through households, permeating folklore around the world.

The musical, directed by Tony Award-winner Diane Paulus, stars Matthew Morrison as James Barrie, while Laura Michelle Kelly plays Sylvia Davies. They are joined on stage by Carolee Carmello, Anthony Warlow, and Teal Wicks—the actress behind Mary Ansell Barrie, James Barrie’s socialite wife. Wicks emerged on the Los Angeles musical theater scene in 2008 as Elphaba in Wicked—the show that has won over 100 international awards, including the

He [her husband James Barrie] is trying to find himself, and she acts very much like a wall that he is constantly hitting against. It was sort of a test for me, as an actor. I mean, I always like to say that I find something of the characters within myself, or try to insert something endearing or relatable and real about the characters, and I found that with her. I think what she does is justified, but on the surface, she is definitely the most character-y, mean lady that I’ve ever played.

Pamela Jacobs:

You originated this role on Broadway; it was a movie before it was turned into a Broadway show. Did you watch the movie and take some of the way it was played, or do you approach it as

TW:

TW: Well, I loved the movie when it first

PJ: You do seem like a really down-to-earth person.

TW:

I try to be. It’s important; I sometimes worry though. It’s like, I wonder if I was a little more of a diva, what that would do, [laughs] if that would give me a little bit more ‘street cred’ in the theater world. to be a Broadway star?

OG: And you knew the Peter Pan story?

TW: I always wanted to. I fell in love with it TW: Yes, I looove Peter Pan. I say it’s my when I was little. I took dance, and my parents favorite fairy tale.

OG: Is it different now, now that you’re in the

PJ: Do you always want to stay in theater?

TW: I would love to do other things. I’ve

done a little bit of TV [The Good Wife, Elementary, etc.]. I would love to do film, or at least try film. I don’t know if I would love it or if I would hate it; it’s a different world. It has its own timelines and rules and the way it’s shot, so it would be interesting to work on a film to see how different that is.

And now, being older, and now knowing more of where the idea for Peter Pan came from—from this man who was still kind of like a child himself, but forced to live in an obviously very mature, very strict social world—I mean Peter Pan is the essence of being carefree, being a child—now it’s probably going to make me cry more than it would make me laugh and dance. Cry in the happy-nostalgia way.

PJ: And to me, Broadway seems like it’s the

And it seems that the rumors are indeed correct, because it’s at Sardi’s that she reports running into Angela Lansbury: “That was really cool. I was like, ‘Oh! Hi, hello, lovely to meet you.’ She was very sweet—very British and very sweet.” She smiles, then adds, “It was one of those, ‘Do I say something? Do I say something? I should say that. I mean, I’m an actress. We do the same thing. We probably know the same people. So this is fine.’”

OG: Did you always know that you were going

First off: Coffee. “Coffee is a little bit of a problem for me,” jokes Wicks. Her designated coffee stop is Frisson Espresso (326 West 47th Street): “That’s kind of like my go-to coffee place. I have a punch card that probably about every two weeks I get free coffee.” Wicks also frequents Blue Bottle Coffee at the Gotham Market (600 11th Avenue). “I’ve lived in San Francisco for a little bit, and I fell in love with Blue Bottle Coffee,” she confesses; the California-based chain of cafés “reminds me of the Ferry Building in San Francisco.”

came out, and I didn’t really remember the wife [Mary Barrie] role all that much, but when I auditioned for the show, I didn’t want to watch the movie again. I knew that it’s the same story, but it’s told in a different way. I remember the movie being beautiful. I also remember it being really sad. And our show—it’s a Broadway musical, so you have to have the ups and fun songs, and dancy songs, and then the ballads, and there’s a lot more humor in it, because you want to make the audiences laugh, and then make them cry. So I just knew that it was going to be different.

So where does this New Yorker go once the curtain drops? “I’ve been in New York for almost ten years,” says Wicks, “and I still could not tell you my favorite restaurant.” She is, of course, referring to the wide variety of food options—in Manhattan alone—that make New York the rare city it is. But since we were seated in a coffee shop in the Theater District, Wicks was nice enough to share her favorites in this neck of the (urban) woods.

Yes, I think so. One thing I absolutely love, no matter what happens with the show, is the company of people. We are like a little family. Everybody has really great souls, really lovely hearts, and came into the show with lots of passion and really appreciating the show and everybody involved. And that was really special. I mean, in the theater community, there’s a lot of great people, and for the most part, in every production you become like a little family, but this is one of the few shows that everybody, across the board, is on that same level. And I think that actually has to do with our director, Diane [Paulus]. She seeks out talent and intellect, but I think she also found people that all clicked together. And I don’t really know how she did that.

He’s Definitely Still Got it

hen I approached Mark Normand to ask him if he’d be interested in doing an interview—after watching his hilarious act at The Stand comedy club one night—his response was: “Me? My parents don’t even know I’m a comic.” It’s this type of humility (and of course, humor) that make him so fun to watch on stage and on television. But while he is humble, he’s also very talented—and is clearly a comedian to watch out for. He’s definitely headed to the top.

so you have to army crawl your way through it—it’s that low. New York was no question.

I went to film school here a year before, and I just fell in love with the city then, so I came back. In New York you can get a lot of stage time [as a comic], and I needed and wanted that.

It was the worst transition ever. I moved here with $800, blew through that in about two days, got an apartment in Crown Heights, got mugged three times in a year, my landlord died of AIDS, and the first day I got into my

grinding it out, and then I did a show one night and got noticed by one Amy Schumer.

I bombed, but she goes ‘hey, I liked that one joke you had, do you want to open for me at the Atlanta Punchline?’ And I was like ‘Oh my God, I’ve never been on the road or opened for somebody.’ She asked if I had about 30 minutes of material, and I said ‘sure’—meanwhile I had about eight, and the eight wasn’t good.

But I said yes to it, and then I started thinking about it and I was like ‘I don’t know this girl, do I have to hang out with her? I don’t have thirty minutes of comedy.’ I wussed out and called her and told her I couldn’t do it because my parents were coming to town.

She was like ‘Seriously? This is a big opportunity.’ Two weeks later I saw her and she said she was doing Hofstra and asked if I wanted to open for her there, and thank God she asked me again. Now she’s the biggest comic on the planet, and I almost blew it because I was scared.

Conan O’Brien thought so; he’s had Normand on his show three times. Amy Schumer also thought so; Normand has been on her show on Comedy Central, Inside Amy Schumer , multiple times, and despite originally turning down her initial request to have him join her on the road, has repeatedly opened for her. Normand also won Caroline’s March Madness competition in 2013, beating out 63 other comedians, has been on countless “Best of” lists, and has performed on Last Comic Standing, Best Week Ever, and John Oliver’s New York Standup Show, to name a few. In addition to giving Normand a Half Hour episode, Comedy Central named him one of their “Comics to Watch” in 2012. Last year, he released his debut album, Still Got It. So while his humility is endearing—pride would not be out of line.

Recently, I met up with him at the Olive Tree Café, the classic NY comedian hangout above the Comedy Cellar, to talk to him about life in New York (the good and the not-so-good), the pressures of performing, and what it’s like to be an introvert in a world full of extroverts.

MN: I was doing five, six open-mics a night,

PJ:

Yeah, thank God. You’d be watching Trainwreck right now shaking your fists and crying.

MN: I’d be your waiter right now. Yeah, we took the LIRR there and went to her childhood home. Her mom made us dinner, we did the gig, and took the train back and she gave me a bunch of dates after that. apartment, there was a pigeon in it, just flying around. So it was pretty rough. I got a job as the file clerk at the film school filing papers all day. I still hate manila to this day.

PJ:

Amy Schumer isn’t just the biggest comic—she’s like the biggest superstar on the planet right now. Is it wild watching her success now, having been along for the ride?

Pamela Jacobs: You came to New York PJ: Were there times that you thought ‘I’ve MN: It’s crazy. We did the Chicago Improv from New Orleans; when you decided you wanted to be a comic, was New York a nobrainer?

Mark Normand:

Yeah, the ceiling for comedy in New Orleans is about a foot high,

had enough, I can’t take New York anymore’?

MN: Never crossed my mind. It was always, ‘keep going, keep going.’

PJ: So what was the transition from hell in New York to success, television gigs, etc.?

around 2010 and there were 12 people there, and now it’s lines around the block and people begging to come in. I watched the whole thing slowly tick up. There was the roast of Charlie Sheen, then the roast of Roseanne, then she got her own show, and then the movie [Trainwreck] and now she’s huge.

PJ:You’ve been on Inside Amy Schumer a

PJ: So you don’t want to act?

MN:

I would do it, but I’d have to be a Seinfeld or a Ray Romano, being myself.

Imagine me crying on TV. That wouldn’t work.

I did an audition once where my dad died in the script, and I was like ‘uh, dad, you’re dead.’ They were like ‘get out of here.’

Conan three times. Were you terrified when you first began doing your act on TV?

MN: Oh yeah. The thing is, you’re so scared,

PJ:

Well, for the average person, public speaking is their number one fear, over death.

MN: I think 90% of comics are introverts.

It’s a lot of defense mechanism. Comedy is just preparing funny things, and that’s what we [introverts] have been doing our whole lives, preparing something to say to everyone we have to go meet. That’s all stand-up is, just professionally.

PJ: So doing late night is just something you really enjoy?

MN: I like it—I like the idea of it as a special thing. You have to get picked, get approved, and you have to nail it. There’s no net.

PJ:

And what are some of the big future goals?

MN: I want to sell a show. I’m working on a

show now about introverts—it’s called The Introvert’s Survival Guide, and each show is a different scenario, and how to deal with it.

It’s a fun idea. Introverts have no spokesperson—I want to be that guy.

PJ: How much of your act do you take from your life?

MN: Oh, most of it. I have weird thoughts where I think of something strange, in the shower or something, and think it’s funny.

PJ:

Do you ever feel like you’ve taken something too far, or you don’t want to cross the line?

MN:

Nah, being offended is dumb; just because a joke involves horrifying things doesn’t mean you should be horrified. There are all these social norms and faux pas, but I feel that this exists, that exists, we should talk about it.

bad anxiety and I’m an introvert, and as a comic sometimes you can’t find it up there and you lose it for a second. You’re just telling words to an audience but there’s no connection, and that’s when you bomb.

‘you ever forget your headphones at home and have to walk around without them? Boy, thoughts are no good. Turns out I love music, I hate my brain,’ and in other places, people don’t get it. That’s because they don’t walk, they drive everywhere. So I had to change it to ‘you ever had your stereo stolen?’ and it’s like, eh, it’s not the same. I’ve got to adjust according to where I am. It’s tough because if the joke works in NY, I want to keep it.

PJ: So doing big TV is like having sex with

but every day you’re just dreaming of doing Conan or doing a special on Comedy Central, so when it comes, it’s terrifying but great. You know, as a guy you’re scared to have sex but you want it so bad, you do it.

Also, as a comic, you realize how hard getting on TV is, that you’re not going to pass it up out of fear. When you’re at Conan behind the curtain waiting to go out, and they pull it open and say ‘you ready?’ you see the lights, the crowd—it’s crazy.

He saw it stalling and stagnating, so with his finance background and unwavering commitment to making Pat LaFrieda Meat Purveyors once again the best in the business, Pat Jr. took over, re-envisioning the brand and its role in New York’s food scene. Enter Pat LaFrieda the third, a.k.a. Pat Jr., the man we know today as “The Magician of Meats.” While he’d been working in the family business since the age of ten, unpacking boxes, helping with deliveries, and most definitely “not being treated like the boss’s son,” according to Pat Jr., his father, Pat Sr., “adamantly fought for [him] to not be in the business.” So he went on to graduate from college with a degree in finance and immediately got a job on Wall Street. But the business was in his blood.

But despite the overwhelming success and exposure—and the fact that his work day ends when many of us are about to wake up—Pat LaFrieda Jr. is just an unassuming, easygoing, extremely likeable man who makes time for everyone. He’s a giant in the industry without the slightest bit of ego, and when you spend any time at all with him, you just feel that his success is well deserved.

Meet the Man Behind One of the Country’s Most Legendary Bars

artenders: They’re considered therapists and friends, mixers of drinks and keepers of secrets. In many cases, they’ve seen it all, although “it all” is relative.

In New York City—particularly at arguably the city’s most elegant and storied bar—this means quite a lot.

Bill Dante, the man behind the King Cole Bar at The St. Regis Hotel, has served his fair share of cocktails to some of the country’s— and the world’s—most interesting players.

When I met with him, I told him the story of my first time at The Kind Cole Bar, years ago, when I drank champagne with Billy Joel on New Year’s Eve. “Oh yeah,” Dante said, casually and unphased. “He used to come in a lot. He used to go down in the front and play the piano and sing.” And just as casually, with a “no big deal” look, he said, “There’s George Lucas over there behind you, having breakfast.”

But anyone who’s spent some time imbibing at the legendary bar—home of the Old King Cole mural, commissioned by John Jacob Astor in 1906—knows it is kind of a big deal.

Not only have generations of drinkers wheeled and dealed and felt no pain under the watchful eye of the famed mural, but it also happens to be the birthplace of the Bloody Mary—or the Red Snapper, as they call it.

Back in the 1920s, Fernand Petiot, a bartender at Mary’s Bar in Paris, had been

serving up vodka and tomato juice to Russian patrons for years, when he decided to spice it up with Worcestershire, celery salt, pepper, and lemon, thereby unknowingly creating cocktail history. He named it the Bloody Mary, and Vincent Astor, who owned the St. Regis, was quite the fan. When prohibition ended in the States, Astor re-opened the King Cole Bar and brought Petiot to work here in New York (he remained at the King Cole Bar until the mid-60s). At the time, “Bloody Mary” was considered too vulgar for the King Cole Bar, so they called it the “Red Snapper.” Today, Bill Dante mixes up a fresh three-gallon batch every morning, using the original recipe, and serves it to a mix of local regulars, corporate bigwigs, St. Regis guests, and plenty of celebs.

bars in the world, where he nonchalantly serves the heads of nearby Sony Pictures and Merril Lynch, actors and athletes (he admits to being excited when Eli Manning was recently there), and those looking for a truly great drink. His mojito is masterful (he learned from a “kid who grew up in Cuba”), and he makes a mean Manhattan.

In general, Dante seems to really enjoy working at what he says is “definitely the best” bar in Manhattan, and points out that the music is low, there are no TV screens, and that people are there to “meet friends on a regular basis and return year after year, which is rare in a hotel.”

Along with the delicious savory drink (and a really good margarita made with fresh lime juice, Dante’s favorite drink to mix), it’s stories like this that get served up at the elegant bar—tales of the hotel and the bar pre- and post-prohibition, and of the incredible people who’ve sat at it. And Dante is a true oldschool, gentlemanly bartender, the kind of yesteryear. “I’ve been doing this a long time,” he points out. He’d been bartending at Tavern on the Green for years until it closed, and was looking for the right place to call home.

The position at The King Cole Bar became available, and he interviewed a whopping five times before being hired. He handled the process so well, in part due to his theatrical training and experience.

You’ll find Bill Dante behind the bar MondayFriday, and you shouldn’t leave without a signature Red Snapper. You can then recreate it at home (albeit without a famous painting looking down on you and New York’s best bartender pouring it).

Dante actually studied theater at Emerson College before moving to New York to join the Jean Cocteau Repertory and then forming the Synchronistic Theater Group (incidentally, Suzanne Collins, Hunger Games author, was a member and is still a friend of Dante’s).

icole Miller opened her first boutique on Madison Avenue nearly 30 years ago—which brought about her signature tie collection. Now an icon in the NY fashion industry, she has been an essential part of the evolution and explosive growth of the ever-changing, often fickle fashion landscape, while still remaining relevant and consistently growing her signature brand—as well as her diffusion brand.

Part of Miller’s success stems from her life as a New Yorker. While born in Fort Worth, Texas and raised in Massachusetts, she’s called New York home for much of her life. As such, she truly understands the uptown/downtown aesthetic of this diverse and unique city. She recently celebrated the 10-year anniversary of her nicole by Nicole Miller brand for JC Penney, an offshoot of her signature Nicole Miller collection. On hand to celebrate were longtime fashion friends, including Pat Cleveland, Roshumba Williams, Kara Young, and Carol Alt—who coincidentally walked in the nicole by Nicole Miller collection launch show.

Everything Nicole Miller has done is a reflection of her love of New York City, and we had the opportunity to discuss her work and her life when she welcomed us into her gorgeous Tribeca Loft, a treasure-trove of art and inspiration that epitomizes Nicole Miller’s vision and personality. She talked about her success as a designer, her evolution and rise to fame, as well as her most recent Spring Summer collection—and of course what she loves most about living in the greatest city in the world.

Hillary Latos: How do you feel your nicole by Nicole Miller line has evolved over the last decade?

Nicole Miller: My nicole by Nicole Miller line has evolved in so many ways over the last decade.

Through designing the 10-year anniversary collection, I was able to look back over the past 10 years and revisit popular prints and patterns that were very well received. The line has grown exponentially at JCPenney. The brand debuted in 2005 with a limited range of clothing items in 450 stores, and has since expanded to over 600 stores with a full collection ranging from apparel to accessories, handbags, outerwear, and more.

HL: What are some of your signature trademarks that are distinctly Nicole?

NM: Florals and animal prints have consistently been trademarks in nicole by Nicole Miller collections over the past ten years. Naturally, they continue to be featured in this limited edition collection, celebrating the 10-year evolution of the brand, but with a modern twist!

HL: What are some of the key silhouettes, materials, and must-haves for this fall?

NM: This fall, some of my must-have pieces include bold prints with tribal, animal, and jewel references set against a modern silhouette. Another must-have this fall is a tunic that you feel comfortable in, yet can be dressed up or dressed down with a perfect pair of heels!

HL: How has the street scene of New York City been woven throughout your collection since you started?

NM: I have often been inspired by the skyline and architectural details of the historic buildings. More recently, I used street art as a source of inspiration.

HL: Which neighborhoods in New York City do you find inspiration from, including for your latest Spring 2016 collection?

NM: I love the Lower East Side, West Village, Tribeca, and Bond Street.

HL: You’ve experienced the evolution of NY Fashion Week since the 80s; what are the biggest changes you’ve seen over the years, and what do you think of it today?

NM: It really has gotten overwhelming. There used to be 40 shows—five days, eight shows per day.

Now there are about 400. There has been a huge influx of international designers because you get so much attention showing here.

HL: From the time you launched your first line, did you have a grand plan to grow it to where it is today?

And how have you rode the fickle wave of the fashion industry to stay on top?

NM: I had a loose plan and tweaked it along the way. It is a very fickle business, and you have to put blinders on, because very often the latest, greatest new designer is out of business the next season.

HL: If you were to give any advice to a designer starting out, what would it be?

NM: I would hope that they don’t end up behind the scenes at a celebrity-endorsed collection. Always try to be focused and have your own identity.

HL: What are your most iconic pieces, silhouettes, and prints that are carried through from season to season?

NM: My tucked and tidal pleated dresses are a staple of my collection; they are very body-conscious and figure-flattering. Also, I have fabrics that are not all over the market, such as my cotton metal, techno metal, and stretch linen.

HL: How would you describe your aesthetic?

NM: I think it is streamlined and not quirky. I love quirky fashion, but it is the first thing you discard next season—I don’t like clothes that look awkward.

HL: As a New Yorker and Hamptonite, what are your favorite places in the city, and what do you like to do during your free time?

NM: I love going to Nobu, Waverly Inn, Da Silvano, and Indochine. I love the Cooper Hewitt because they have such interesting shows. I really enjoy going to the various antique shows on the piers and gallery openings in Chelsea.

HL: What do you have planned for the future?

NM: Expanding our handbag and shoe lines, which have been doing really well. We are also getting back into the men’s market again.

“We love Almond,” she says, referring to the popular bistro serving delectable French comfort food, with two locations in the city (one in Nicole’s neighborhood of Tribeca) and one in Bridgehampton. “I always love Indochine, it’s a favorite, and Nobu.” We concur!

Travel

“St. Barts” was Nicole’s immediate response, when asked about travel. “I also love Jamaica and I love going to Mexico.

I’ve been to a lot of different places in Mexico and it’s always great. I love Mexican artifacts,” she says, pointing out the countless beautiful Mexican pieces decorating her loft, “and I love the day of the dead.”

In this oh-so-hot neighborhood, one of the places you’ll find Nicole is at Flywheel. And for shopping?

“I love the new Le District, the French market,” which we’ve noticed is quickly becoming a New York classic.

“I’m very excited about the new Gourmet Garage in my neighborhood,” she says, adding that she’s looking forward to getting great cheeses there, among other things.

“And I really like the farmers market on Greenwich Street on Saturdays—there are always good choices there.”

Nicole adores Halloween. Everyone in the office dresses up and gets into the spirit of it. One of her favorite costumes she’s worn? “I got this cheapo pirate outfit at Halloween Adventure, and I doctored it up. It came with a blouse but I made a new one, and I used one of my own corsets. I used the skirt that came with it, wore skeleton tights, and got a really cool hat.” And presto: A couture pirate skeleton! But here’s the best part: “I turned around and made a version of that blouse—inspired by this costume,“ Nicole says with a smile, “and it was a huge seller.”

Beyond her burgeoning design career, her passion for music has led to great success, with the release of her album I’m Just Me earlier this year. Consuelo always loved to sing and entertain, but it took a car crash at age 19 for her to decide that music was something she wanted to pursue as a career.

From that point on, she was determined to realize her dream. With the support of her manager, Christian Seidal, who encouraged her to write her own material, she perfected her technique. It was during this time that she developed plans for the creation of her own record label, C&R. This was realized in 2011.

At the first salon in September, Olympic ice dancer Melissa Gregory spoke about her Eduskating program, which teaches students about Olympic values, teamwork, and skating. The thirty-or-so women in attendance came from the worlds of art, fashion, finance, sports, science, media, and law. “My goal is that these women will form friendships that they might not have had without this group, and that that inspires them and helps them look at the world in different ways, and think of new things to do together, and make their lives better in different ways,” Butler explained.

At these get-togethers, she wants to recognize women who make important contributions to society. “In New York City, everybody is so busy, so we tend to stay in our own expertise areas, so you end up with circles

Butler’s day job at Greenberg Traurig, LLP involves helping companies, pension funds, and private individuals buy and sell businesses and invest in real estate developments and other projects. Since 2009, Butler has led the Harvard Club of New York’s M&A interest group, and in 2013 she was named in M&A Advisor’s “40 Under 40” list. She’s also on the advisory board of the private equities program at Columbia Business School, her alma mater.

In her legal work, one project Butler was very excited to have had a hand in was the Hudson Yards joint venture. “That’s going to change the face of New York City, and to have seen that from the beginning, and be a part of that is just personally very gratifying for me,” she says. Working on the Kingsbridge National

Ice Center in the Bronx is another career highlight; it has a special place in her heart because her husband, Steven, is part of the project’s development team. “I’ve been working on that for a very long time, and I can’t wait to skate there,” Butler says.

She also serves on the New Vic Council, which supports the New 42nd Street and the New Victory Theater, and sits on the board of the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts in the Bronx. “It’s just another extension of everything I believe in, which is supporting the arts for children,” says Butler, who has a six-year-old son. Her participation in these arts organizations is not unrelated to her founding of the female-focused salon series.

“What I most love to do is to let people have access to people and experiences that they wouldn’t necessarily get otherwise. So I love to do that for children, through the New Victory, I love their programming, and I want to do that for these fantastic women who are coming to my event going forward.”

About an hour into my stay at the resort, my stress level was cut in half. By my first afternoon, strolling along an almost deserted stretch of beach with a frozen drink in hand, I realized my biggest concern was how I’d carry home all of the fragile, pearlescent seashells I’d collected. And by that first evening, watching the most magnificent lavender and fuchsia sunset over the tranquil Gulf of Mexico, I began plotting how I could live there.

Beyond their beaches and multiple swimming pools, the Gulf of Mexico awaits, and it’s home to an array of marine life, including manatees, Florida’s gentle giants (known as sea cows), and dolphins galore. Captiva Cruises leave directly from South Seas’ marina, and offer a wide variety of cruising options ranging from a Beach & Shelling Cruise to private chartered catamaran cruises.

I opted for the Dolphin Watch & Wildlife Adventure Cruise, in hopes of spotting one or two dolphins; I saw about 20.

The list of activities goes on and on. I took an early morning yoga class with Yali Zawady and loved it (I don’t always even like yoga).

There’s a fully-equipped waterfront fitness center (I went for pancakes instead, but it’s nice to know it’s there), several jogging paths, a beachfront golf course, and a 4,000-squarefoot full-service salon and spa. The onsite photography center offers classes and professional portraits and an artist-inresidence program offers painting classes.

possibly need and more, including daily housekeeping. While staying in South Seas’ private homes, guests have access to all resort amenities with the added bonus of ultra-extravagant estate living. The sixbedroom home, for instance, features 8,000 square feet of opulence overlooking the ocean, a dining room that seats eight, a screened-in lanai, a wet bar, an outdoor grill, and a beachfront private pool with a hot tub. If this isn’t luxury, I don’t know what is.

Perhaps one of the most impressive features of South Seas Island Resort is the Blackwood Tennis Academy, complete with 11 courts, a tennis concierge service, daily clinics, and both group and private lessons by expert instructors. I took an excellent private lesson with Blackwood founder Nick Blackwood, and I would highly recommend a lesson with him for players of any level. Throughout the year, groups of tennis lovers flock to South Seas for a chance to play in paradise, and every November, the resort plays host to the Women’s Pro Classic, a $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit Event.

Checking In: All-Inclusive Luxury at the Grand Velas

he all-inclusive Grand Velas Resort, a AAA Five-Diamond property, sits within acres upon acres of mangroves and lush jungle, culminating at a white, sandy beach along the Riviera Maya in Mexico.

Although the resort is sandwiched between the nightlife-filled tourist scenes of Cancun and Playa Del Carmen, the vibe here makes it feel a world away. The resort’s lush jungle, over-the-top spa, and glistening pools provide all the relaxation and Mexican vibe you’d want from a getaway.

While its sister property, The Grand Velas in Nayarit on Mexico’s Pacific coast, is small and boutique, this Grand Velas features over 500 massive suites (each between 1,100 and 1,300 square feet) in three different

sections; two family and one adult-only. The first of the three sections you’ll approach, upon entering the property, is Zen, set deep in the jungle and a golf cart ride away from the beach. The spa is located here as well and, at almost 90,000 square feet, is the largest spa in Latin America. As its name suggests, Zen is very tranquil, although it is family-friendly. The pool is beautifully-lit and the grounds are perfectly landscaped (as is the entire resort).

The other two sections, the Ambassador and the Grand Class, sit side-by-side and are located along the beach. Ambassador is family-friendly and Grand Class caters to adults only, each with its own beautiful pool.

While I was staying at the Grand Class, I

opted to spend my days at the Ambassador section. The pool there is magnificent and the vibe is a bit livelier. As an FYI, I found the children at the entire resort to be extremely well behaved and basically a non-issue. The Ambassador section has both a teen club and a kid’s club. The teen club is so futuristic and cool that I even noticed a few parents playing some of the video games.

However, the real jewel at this all-exclusive resort is the dining options. While some were better than others, they were all exceptional.

You’ll find each dining experience more of an “event” from beginning to end, with the waiters instinctively fulfilling your every need.

Although their French offering, Piaf, was the standout for me, Cocina de Autor is the first restaurant at a luxury all-inclusive resort to receive Five Diamonds by the AAA. In a nutshell, the Grand Velas Resort and Spa serves up the perfect balance of luxury and casual ambiance. From their karaoke nightclub, locally inspired spa treatments, and poolside foot massages to the array of activities and fitness classes, this is one fantastic retreat for the entire family.

The original location of Il Valentino was in the Sutton Hotel, where the elegant spot was a frequent hangout for celebrities, business impresarios, and political figures, and was also utilized for United Nations diplomatic events. When the hotel decided to make a change in operations, Restauranteur Mirso Lekic sought to find a location close to the original, and has now found that in its new location, on the corner of 59th Street and 1st Avenue.

At this new location, Il Valentino Osteria’s Executive Consulting Chef, Erminio Conte, formerly Executive Chef of Serafina, and Sous Chef Lauro Sucuz, formerly of Petaluma and

Elios, have worked together to craft a menu of delicious Tuscan delicacies that have generated acclaim from far and wide.

The restaurant’s intimate space was elegantly designed by Dan Sehic of C3D Architecture, who created a rustic-yet-modern, chic design for the space. The restaurant’s tabletops and chairs were crafted out of mango wood with contrasting metal chair legs, all of which were conceptualized by Franco Lucic of LMF Group.

Along the walls lies a line of banquettes designed in leather with gold threading detail, accentuating the rich and rustic feel of the environment.

In the back of the main dining room sits the restaurant’s greatest gem—its brick oven.

Visible from all corners of the space, each day the oven produces all breads and pizza crusts for signature dishes, including its truffle pizza with fresh black truffle, fontina cheese, ricotta, homemade fresh mozzarella, and truffle oil.

In addition to the fresh baked breads and pizzas, Chef Conte prepares handmade pasta with homemade sauces. Signature dishes include the Cavatelli al Porfumo, comprised of homemade pasta shells tossed with tomatoes, mozzarella, and fresh basil; and the Pasta Nera con Gamberi e Asaparagi,

which combines black tagliolini with shrimp, asparagus, and tomatoes. Along with the delectable pastas, the entrée dishes are equally enjoyable.

Diners have the option to feast on delicious dishes including the Salmone alla Griglia, a grilled salmon served with grilled vegetables, or the Petto d’Anatra Arosto, duck medallions, sweet potato puree, and apple gremolata, that will remind veteran diners of the original Il Valentino, and keep guests both old and new coming back for more.

Eat Up, Lose Weight 9 Ways to Eat Less While Dining Out

o you find it stressful going out to eat while trying to stick to a healthy lifestyle? If you answered “yes,” you are not alone. Food and eating have become more than just a way to stay alive.

Celebrations and family gatherings center around food, and we use it as a way of sharing our traditions.

Whether you realize it or not, you are exposed to the social pressures of eating quite often.

When eating out, staying on track with a healthy eating plan might be more challenging. Restaurants know exactly how much sugar, fat, and salt (the evil trinity) to add to their dishes to have us love it, finish it all, and come back for more. We all crave the evil trinity, so the more control you have over the food and the better you prepare, the better off you’ll be.

So go out, enjoy, and get dressed to the nines, while remembering these nine rules: 1. Drink plenty of water – Before any social occasion that will be serving food, drink up. It will fill you up, as well as help you stay focused on your plan.

Water is also great for your metabolism!

2. Plan ahead – If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail. If you know your schedule for the day includes a meal out, try to eat a little less starch (rice, pasta, potatoes, and bread) during the day. This will save you a few calories to spend on that meal. However, do not fast the entire day in preparation for the event, since your hunger will only become your worst enemy.

3. Order at home – Not literally, though.

its menu online. You can look it over and know exactly what you will be ordering before you ever walk in. This prevents impulse ordering or joining in on whatever anyone else is doing.

4. Pre-eat – Eat right before you go to the restaurant or event. If you arrive hungry, you will eat everything and eat it all way too quickly. An example: You will eat all the bread, order an appetizer, main dish, and dessert. This is not the optimal plan, so get something in your stomach to prevent this from happening to you. (Tip: Bring a whey-based (not soy) protein bar on your way to go eat. This will “prime the pump,” meaning you will avoid excess hunger because you have just eaten. You only have willpower when you are full.)

5. Take it slow – Use this social situation to talk and make conversation before putting your hand in that bread basket!.

Remember: It takes about 20 minutes for the stretch receptors in your stomach to stretch and send a chemical signal to your brain to let you know that your stomach is full. Everyone has, at one point or another, eaten to pain. This usually means you were eating way too fast (usually due to excessive hunger).

(Tip: Eat with your non-dominant hand, and don’t pre-load the fork. So while you are chewing, don’t ready your fork for the next bite).

6. Special order (even if it’s just a little) – Sometimes we don’t want to draw too much attention to ourselves while ordering, but it can help in big ways.

Vegetables should be steamed or grilled (this alone can save over a hundred calories in oil) Take a good look before you make a decision at a buffet – When eating from a buffet, take some time to weigh all your options before you fill your plate, then select foods that fit your meal plan.

Try a little first, and only eat what you like. Don’t just eat it because it is on your plate.

Add some fiber – Selecting foods high in fiber such as vegetables, whole grains, and fruits with skin will make you feel fuller faster. You’ll have less room for tempting foods later.

Portions – Exercise control, not only at a restaurant, but at an event such as a wedding or dinner party. When the “what” is not up to you, the “how much” always is. Most restaurants serve too much food, so do not feel the need to finish everything. If you leave enough over, you won’t have to plan dinner for the following night. (Tip: Ask them to bring only half of your meal and to wrap the other half up and take it to go.)

Begin with relational generosity

What is relational generosity?

I

t’s not picking up the check after a sensational dinner. That part is easy. What is more complicated is paying attention to what your date is saying—both the content and its meaning to them—during the meal.

The food, drinks, and atmosphere are all savory distractions, but they’re incidental.

The focus of the meal, indeed of life itself, is the company we keep. Otherwise, why not just stay home? We New Yorkers are famous for being quite content with the pleasure of our own company, but dating and forming relationships is about ourselves in cooperation with others.

In therapy sessions, when my patients disclose the various communication challenges in their relationships, 99-percent of the time I hear, “I don’t feel like I am being listened to.” One-percent of the time I may hear someone say, “I don’t feel like I’m listening enough.”

willing to stand up and be real with that. It’s always about us—our jobs, our finances, our problems, our stress level, our sleep, our aches and pains—in short, our needs. It works, too. Without the instinct for selfpreservation many of us wouldn’t be successful and living in New York, right?

But, our selfishness can diminish our chances at finding the relationship, the love, the partner, or partners we talk about wanting.

During your initial dates with someone, focus on listening. Practice relational generosity. By tuning in, you’ll better be able to determine if your date is paying attention when you talk.

Red flag for first and second daters: If your date isn’t listening to you now, they are not going to spontaneously erupt with relational generosity or active listening skills sometime later in the relationship. They don’t have to love mythology, foreign cinema, or European football as much as you do—or like it at all—to understand what it means to you.

What do you hear yourself saying most often?

When we talk about relationships, we often talk about what we want. Let’s not forget our needs, but let’s shift the conversation a bit and talk, for a change, about what we want to give.

5 Tips For Middle & High School Interviews

T

he Annie orphans said it best: “You’re never fully dressed without a smile.”

This is never truer than when you are interviewing for a private school’s spot—we mean it! Arriving at an interview with a smile on your face makes a great first impression as you greet the admissions staff. The individual who will chat with you has met with hundreds of applicants. Nothing is more welcoming to a busy interviewer than getting to know a happy, smiling candidate who is excited and ready to share information about herself, and is prepared to express why she wishes to be a part of a new school community.

1. Excitement Is Key! It’s simply not fun to interview someone who is half asleep, or does not seem to want to be there. We know these interviews can be stressful and cause anxiety. Your goal is to develop rapport, be comfortable, and share interesting information. This will occur more naturally if you are genuinely excited by the new school.

Excitement is revealed in many ways. Smile, look directly at the interviewer, and come prepared with interesting stories about yourself. This will convey that you really want one of the few available spots. The admissions interviewer will definitely note this.

2. Do Your Homework

An applicant must do his homework to understand the school’s attributes. This will illustrate his desire to be part of their community.

Mention specifics about the campus noted on the tour, a special program the school offers, or a specific class that seems interesting.

4. No Negatives

For example, a campus school offers on-site sports. If you are a sports enthusiast, this is an inviting subject to discuss. If the school has a new science lab and you love science, this is a great conversation starter. Find one or two aspects about the curriculum that especially appeal to you.

3. Keep It Personal Personal stories are the best way to keep an interview interesting. The admissions staff wants to like you and is seeking students who will add to a lively, diverse community. Think about the subjects for which you have a passion, the personal stories you can share which illustrate who you are and how you can add to their community. An interviewer will often say, “Tell me about yourself.” Be prepared to share something that is key to who you are.

If you are applying to middle or high school, you will be changing from one school to another. You may be asked about your current school. Keep anything said about the current school upbeat and positive. You may not have liked some things about your current school: Teachers, some students, sports or lack of sports, too rigorous academics or not rigorous enough, your school felt too big or too small. However, it is better to focus on the good things about the school you are leaving than the negatives.

Instead, express excitement to experience a new school with new friends.

5. Ask Questions We encourage you to ask questions about the school—those that are genuine, and truly important to you. If you have had the chance to tour the school before the interview, this is a great time to think of a few questions about what you have observed. Other questions might involve sports teams, clubs, after-school programs, the language program, and electives. Inquire about student government if this truly interests you.

People and Their Pets A Look at Notable New Yorkers and their Four-Legged Friends

e all know pets are a very important part of our lives, and sometimes their impact on us is more significant than our two-legged counterparts. I know what they mean to us, and to the tens of thousands of people they help every day.

In future issues, I will cover more about my personal life experiences with pets, but for now it’s not about me. Allow me to introduce you to the first in my series on people and pets: Roberta Meadow, party and event planner (and dog-lover) extraordinaire.

manufacturing company, Roberta was not aware that she was going to embark on a new phase of her life. While walking her beloved King Charles Spaniels, Tyler and Clancy, in Central Park, she ran into a former clothing manufacturer who was walking his dogs, and they began catching up on their lives. He told Roberta he had just fired his party planner who was doing his son’s Bar Mitzvah. Roberta knew the details of his life and his family. She wound up planning the Bar Mitzvah, and the rest, as they say, is history. She went on to plan his two daughters’ weddings, and his older son’s remarriage, and from there, countless other events.

Roberta Meadow LTD was born all because of her dogs. They are her constant source of inspiration, and they stand guard on top of their brocade-covered baskets in her office. Clancey, sadly, has gone on to doggie heaven, and there is a new King Charles in Roberta’s life named Pushain.

Having grown up with parents who always entertained, with beautiful crystal and silver and elaborate tableware and centerpieces, along with the fact that her grandmother Rose was an antique collector, Roberta was already a wealth of party-planning knowledge. Add to that her corporate party planning experience, and success was inevitable. Roberta’s forte is listening to her clients’ concepts and needs; she

understands what they want before they do, and she knows how to execute.

Considering her business stemmed from her four-legged family members, Roberta has even taken her dogs to Europe for a walk down the aisle in a medieval Italian Villa before 250 international clients. She has created a 50s-themed birthday party, set in a 1950s diner, all before a glittery, hard-to-please Hamptons crowd, and has done a reality stars’ wedding on TV at the Pierre. Of course she also does the traditional wedding, but always with a creative twist; she has had a food truck waiting outside a major hotel at 2 a.m., giving out pizza bagels and the New York Times—an example of her philosophy that the devil is in the details.

Roberta is well known and admired by her doggy lovers and clients, and has even planned a celebrity wedding in a stable in the Hamptons with chandeliers and live horses—just one more example of the way she thinks outside the box. But no matter how much success and ingenuity she exhibits, her company’s beginnings can always be attributed to a walk in the park with her two best (furry) friends.

Keeping Kid Athletes Safe

It’s important that doctors, coaches, and physical therapists work together to identify at-risk players. Dr. Andrew Price, a New York pediatric orthopedist colleague I admire, suggested the culprit responsible for the rising harm is sport specialization. This obsessive focus on one sport is a growing epidemic responsible for an estimated two million injuries and 500,000 doctor visits each year.

Over-specialization happens when a student decides not to change up their workout or play multiple sports, but only stick to the same daily routine to excel at one. Playing only football, hockey, basketball, soccer, or swimming—in year-round training competitions—is becoming more common.

Being a multi-sport athlete helps develop mobility, stability, and strength in both the upper and lower body. However, choose two sports that require different skills, such as hockey and swimming. I used to divide my summer workouts between outdoor basketball, baseball, and football. I loved soccer, swam with friends, roller-bladed, and played tag. This well-balanced array of activities gave my joints and muscles adequate rest and kept me fit and injury-free decades later. Like the Obamas—both in good shape in their fifties—the goal should be overall health and longevity.

Studies suggest that one should not specialize until age 13 or 14. Yet kids as young as nine come to me for perpetual shoulder and knee injuries induced by continual activity, inadequate training, and improper warmups.

lmost everyone who lives in New York could benefit from having a Personal Assistant. It’s the perfect solution to the ongoing battle to acquire New York’s hottest commodity: Time. Not a single person I know complains of having too much free time— similarly, no one I know would object to having some additional income.

Personal Assistants can be part-time or full-time, face-to-face or virtual, but bottom line is that they are there to make your life significantly easier. Here are some tried-and-true ways to get the most out of having a Personal Assistant— from before you even hire someone to maintaining a long-lasting and loyal working relationship.

1. Be specific in your job description.

Take time to jot down things you wish you could have someone take off your plate—whether it’s tracking down lost shirts at the dry cleaner’s or making elaborate travel plans. Be sure to include your expectations about availability up front so as to avoid any potential resentment down the road. For example, if you want someone who will respond to your e-mail or text within five minutes of sending it, no matter the time of day, make that clear up front. As long as you’re clear about what you expect, that will make finding the perfect fit easier.

2. Look for potential more than experience. Being a Personal Assistant isn’t rocket science, and while it’s great to hire someone who has some experience, it’s not mandatory. If the candidate has a professional demeanor, you feel you can communicate well with this person, and you believe they have the capacity to grow—hire him or her over someone with extensive experience. Chances are

someone who is new, hungry for approval, and eager to please will give you the 110% you are looking for, rather than someone who has been doing the same work for 10+ years and has seen it all before.

3. Personality above all. Remember that you will probably be interacting with this person a lot, so when looking through candidates, be sure to look for a solid personality match. This will pay dividends down the line.

4. Anticipate a learning curve. A great assistant will eventually learn how to anticipate your needs; at the beginning, however, there will be some mistakes. View these as learning opportunities, and if corrected gently, giving someone a second chance can lead to an excellent long-term relationship. Having someone around who knows your particular taste is invaluable.

5. Be respectful of their job. A Personal Assistant is typically not also a nanny, chauffeur, chef, accountant, handyman, technology consultant, and cleaning person, unless of course that is something you have specified in your job description and those are responsibilities they are aware of (see tip number 1!). However, should you find yourself in need of those things, a Personal Assistant can definitely help you find the best of the best in any area in which you need more help. Keeping your requests within your assistant’s wheelhouse makes everything more efficient and leaves less room for error.

6. Be specific in your requests. Don’t be afraid to reveal that you like your things done just so.

After all, that’s what they’re there to do, and what you’re paying them for. If you have a specific format for calendar appointments, or prefer things to be filed a certain way, any good assistant will be able to follow the protocol (or, if they’re excellent, maybe even suggest a way to improve or streamline things). Also, giving someone structure to follow helps free up your time so that you don’t have to micromanage your assistant.

7. Praise-to-criticism ratio.

Harvard Business Review posted an interesting piece back in

2013 about the ideal praise-to-criticism ratio in order to maximize effectiveness in the workplace, and there’s no reason this can’t work in your home as well. Studies show that employees were most effective when they received six compliments or positive notes for every negative comment. While it’s unrealistic to expect to keep close track of this, it’s something to aim for when providing feedback to your Personal Assistant.

8. Take care of them, and they’ll take care of you. To begin with, make sure your Personal Assistant feels adequately compensated.

Make sure they have health insurance, and if they don’t, or you are unable to offer it, offer to split the cost of an individual plan. Include generous year-end bonuses, a la the world of finance. Let them take a car service for errands when it makes sense—in particularly inclement weather or if they’re carrying lots of stuff or something precious/heavy.

9. Occasional perks. I have to say I have had the most generous employers, and it makes a huge difference. Are you getting rid of all of last season’s clothes? Let them have first dibs. Do you have tickets to a show that you can’t go to last minute? See if your assistant wants to go! Do you have a beach house or upstate home you rarely use? Offer it to them for a day or two. Or offer incentives beyond their payroll— i.e., if you can get this done within this amount of time, you can have dinner anywhere in the city, on me. The NEW Whitney Museum. Known for their focus on works by living artists, the new building allows space to truly show off their exhibitions and extensive collection of modern and contemporary American art. Outside of that it’s a highly charged area to spend a NYC day!

Bryant Park. In the summer you can lay out and on Monday evenings it’s the summer series movie night. In the winter the ice skating is great, and not terribly crowded. During the holidays the tents are up with shops for gifts, and there are food stands and an outside bar with heaters, hot chocolate, wine. You can go with a significant other, or hang there with a drink while your kids are skating.
